This research is devoted to the study effects of complex alloying of Al-0.3 wt. % Mg-1 wt. % Si and Al-0.5 wt. % Mg-1.3 wt. % Si alloys by small additions of Sc and Zr on the microstructure in the as-cast condition. The effect of small additions of these elements on the microhardness, electrical conductivity, grain size and phase composition of the indicated alloy systems was studied. The methods of optical and electron microscopy were used for the study. Moreover, the phase composition was calculated using the Thermo-Calc software package. The study showed a strong effect of the chemical composition of investigated alloys on the size of the grains, which, with a certain combination of additives, can decrease several times. Grain refinement occurs both due to supercooling and formation of primary Al3Sc particles in the liquid phase. Alloys based on Al-0.5 wt. % Mg-1.3 wt. % Si are more prone to the formation of this phase since a lower concentration of Sc is required for it to occur. In addition, more silicon interacts with other elements. At the same time, Al-0.3 wt. % Mg-1 wt. % Si requires lower temperature for complete dissolution of Mg2Si, which can contribute to more efficient heat treatment, which includes reducing the number of steps. TEM data show that during ingot cooling (AlSi)3ScZr dispersoid precipitates. This dispersoid could precipitate as coherent and semi-coherent particles with L12 structure as well as needle-shaped particles. The precipitation of coherent and semi-coherent particles during cooling of the ingot indicates that they can be obtained during subsequent multistage heat treatment. In addition, in the Al0.5Mg1.3Si0.3Sc alloy, metastable β″ (Mg5Si6) are precipitated.

In this paper, the effect of adding the refiner Sc to the high Zn/Mg ratio 7xxx series aluminum alloy melt on the hot tearing performance, microstructure, and mechanical properties of the alloy is studied. The hot tearing performance test (CRC) method is used to evaluate the hot tearing performance of the alloy. The squeeze casting process was used to form solid cylindrical parts to analyze the structure and properties of the alloy. This study shows that the hot cracking sensitivity of the alloy after the addition of the refiner Sc is significantly reduced. The ingot grain size is significantly reduced, and the average grain size is reduced from about 86 μm to about 53 μm. While the mechanical properties are significantly improved, and the tensile strength reduced from 552 MPa is increased to 571 MPa, and the elongation rate is increased from 11% to 14%.

A comprehensive transient model is developed to study the effect of electrode rotation on the evolution of metal pool profiles and the solidification quality of ESR ingots. Magnetohydrodynamic flow, heat transfer, solidification, and electrode melting are considered simultaneously in the model. The growth of the ESR ingot is predicted using the dynamic layering method. The numerical results show that the productivity reaches a maximum of 15.97% at the rotating speed of 40 rpm without increasing power. With the increasing rotating speed, the maximum temperature of the melt decreases, and the temperature distribution becomes more uniform. Compared with the static one, the pool profiles are flattened by −1.19%, −8.52%, and 12.44% at the rotating speeds of 20, 40, and 60 rpm, respectively. The metal pool profile was improved remarkably, but only at the higher speed (i.e., 60 rpm). The effect of rotating speed on the metal pool profile depends on the competition between the melting rate and slag temperature. Meanwhile, the local solidification time and the secondary dendrite arm spacing are slightly improved at lower rotating speeds but are significantly worse at higher rotating speeds.

A TNM alloy ingot was fabricated with powder hot isostatic pressing (P-HIP) and short-time exposure treatment conducted at 750–1050 °C for 2–5 h. The tensile mechanical properties were investigated at room temperature and 800 °C. The results revealed that a fully lamellar microstructure of P-HIPed TNM alloy with only 0.3 vol.% β0 phase could be obtained by hot isostatic pressing at 1260 °C, under the pressure of 170 MPa, held for 4 h. When the exposure temperature was below 850 °C, the α2 lamellae were transformed into nano-scaled (α2 + γ) lamellae (i.e., the α2→α2 + γ transformation). With increases in the exposure temperature, the β0 phase began to precipitate within the α2 lamellae (α2→β0 transformation) at 950 °C. The α2→γ and the α2→β0 transformation both happened at 950–1050 °C, and the higher exposure temperature accelerated the diffusion of Mo and facilitated the α2→β0 transformation. The yield strength and elongation at RT and 800 °C were both improved after short-time high-temperature exposure treatment. The uniform distribution and nano-scaled interfacial β0 phase provided precipitation strengthening and were not harmful to the elongation.

This article presents a method of reusing aluminum scrap from alloy 6082 using the hot extrusion process. Aluminum chips from milling and turning processes, having different sizes and morphologies, were cold pressed into briquettes prior to hot pressing at 400 °C at a ram speed of 2 mm/s. The study of mechanical properties combined with observations of the microstructures, as well as tests of density, hardness and electrical conductivity were carried out. On the basis of the results, the possibility of using the plastic consolidation method and obtaining materials with similar to a solid ingot mechanical properties, density and electrical conductivity was proven. The possibility of modifying the surface of consolidated aluminum scrap was tested in processes examples: polishing, anodizing and coloring. For this purpose, a number of analyses and tests were carried out: comparison of colors on color histograms, roughness determination, SEM and chemical composition analysis. It has been proven there are differences in the surface treatment of the solid material and that of scrap consolidation, and as such, these differences may significantly affect the final quality.

Extruded Mg-Gd-Y alloy tubes were obtained by using cast ingot and extruded bar billets. Microstructure and mechanical properties were also studied with two different cooling methods: air cooling and water cooling. The result shows that by using an extruded bar as billet extruded tubes achieves higher elongation comparing to using cast ingots due to favored texture for the activation of basal slip. Using the water-cooling method, extruded tubes achieve a higher yield strength compared to the air cooling method due to their fine grain size. Using cast ingot billets and the water-cooling method, the elongation is only 6% due to large unrecrystallized grains caused by inhomogeneous deformation and unfavored texture for the activation of basal slip. Using the extruded bar billet and the water-cooling method, the tube has uniformed small grains and much more randomized texture caused by the inhibition of preferred grain growth process. The highest texture intensity is only 1.852 in this kind of tube. Both high yield strength (195.3 MPa) and high elongation (23.9%) are achieved in this tube.

The microstructural refinement of 2195 aluminum alloy ingots is particularly important for improving their industrial applications and mechanical properties. Combined with vacuum casting and inert gas protection, scalable high-strength ultrasonic melt processing (USMT) technology was used to manufacture 2195 aluminum alloy cylindrical ingots. Then, the influence of USMT on the main microstructural components (primary α-Al grains, secondary phase network, and precipitated particles) was studied. Our experiments show that the main microstructure of the ingot was improved after the introduction of ultrasound. Compared to the ingot formed without USMT, the size and morphology of the primary α-Al phase were optimized. The agglomeration of coarsening secondary phases can be alleviated, and the large layered secondary phase network becomes discontinuous throughout the ingot under USMT. At the same time, the mechanical properties of the solidified aluminum alloy ingots were also tested, and comparisons were made between samples formed with and without USMT. The results show that the stress concentration caused by the large area of coarse secondary phase in the ingot leads to the decrease of mechanical properties.

The paper presents numerical modelling and an operational experiment to forge a slab ingot P40N from 55NiCrMoV7 tool steel and the procedure for the optimization of its production. The aim of the numerical simulation of forging was to verify the existing procedure of forging a plate from a conventional polygonal 8K forging ingot and a slab ingot with a polygonal shape of P40N surfaces. The effect of the shape of the ingot on the achievement of the required forging reduction and strain after the cross section of the forging of the plate, with final dimensions of approximately 1010 mm width × 310 mm thickness × 5350 mm length, was studied. The results obtained in the operational experiment showed satisfactory qualitative parameters of the steel forging from the slab P40N ingot which were in accordance with the predicted results of numerical simulations. The results indicated that in selected cases the use of a slab P40N ingot instead of the conventional polygonal 8K forging ingot can be considered in the production of certain plate-type forgings.

Channel segregation (CS) is the most typical defect during solidification of NbTi alloy. Based on numerical simulation and experimental characterizations, we deeply elucidated its characteristics, formation mechanism, effecting factor and prediction criterion. According to acid etching, industrial X-ray transmission imaging, 3D X-ray microtomography and chemical analysis, it was found that in a casing ingot, by He cooling, finer grain size, weaker segregation and slighter CS can be obtained compared with air-cooled ingot. The simulation results of macrosegregation show that CS is caused by the strong natural convection in the mushy zone triggered by the thermo-solutal gradient. Its formation can be divided into two stages including channel initiation and growth. In addition, due to the stronger cooling effect of the He treatment, the interdendritic flow velocity becomes smaller, consequently lowering the positive segregation and CS and improving the global homogenization of the final ingot. Finally, to predict the formation of CS, the Rayleigh number model was proposed and its critical value was found to be 15 in NbTi alloy for the first time. When it is lower than the threshold, CS disappears. It provides an effective tool to evaluate and optimize the solidification parameters to fabricate the homogenized NbTi ingot in engineering practice.

The newly designed ingot-metallurgy nickel-based superalloy SDZhS-15 intended for disc applications at operating temperatures up to 800&ndash, 850 &deg, C was subjected to homogenization annealing and canned forging at subsolvus temperatures, followed by solid solution treatment and ageing. Mostly a fine-grained recrystallized microstructure was obtained in the forgings. It was revealed that post-forging solid solution treatment at T &gt, (Ts-50), where Ts is the &gamma, &prime, solvus temperature, led to a significant &gamma, grain growth, which in turn led to a decrease in strength and ductility of the superalloy. The solution treatment at (Ts-60)&ndash, (Ts-50) allowed to save fine &gamma, grains (d&gamma, = 10&ndash, 20 &mu, m) and to provide the formation of secondary &gamma, precipitates with a size of around 0.1 &mu, m. In the forged and heat-treated conditions, the superalloy demonstrated superior mechanical properties, particularly excellent creep resistance at 650&ndash, C in the stress range of 400&ndash, 1200 MPa. Microstructure examination of the creep-tested samples showed that a decrease in the creep resistance at 850 &deg, C can be associated with enhanced diffusivity along &gamma, grain and &gamma, /&gamma, interphase boundaries leading to formation of cracks along the boundaries. In spite of the heavy alloying, the topologically close-packed phases were not detected in the superalloy, including in the creep tested samples.

Laser powder bed fusion has been widely investigated for shape memory alloys, primarily NiTi alloys, with the goal of tailoring microstructures and producing complex geometries. However, processing high temperature shape memory alloys (HTSMAs) remains unknown. In our previous study, we showed that it is possible to manufacture NiTiHf HTSMA, as one of the most viable alloys in the aerospace industry, using SLM and investigated the effect of parameters on defect formation. The current study elucidates the effect of process parameters (PPs) on the functionality of this alloy. Shape memory properties and the microstructure of additively manufactured Ni-rich NiTiHf alloys were characterized across a wide range of PPs (laser power, scanning speed, and hatch spacing) and correlated with energy density. The optimum laser parameters for defect-free and functional samples were found to be in the range of approximately 60&ndash, 100 J/mm3. Below an energy density of 60 J/mm3, porosity formation due to lack-of-fusion is the limiting factor. Samples fabricated with energy densities of 60&ndash, 100 J/mm3 showed comparable thermomechanical behavior in comparison with the starting as-cast material, and samples fabricated with higher energy densities (&gt, 100 J/mm3) showed very high transformation temperatures but poor thermomechanical behavior. Poor properties for samples with higher energies were mainly attributed to the excessive Ni loss and resultant change in the chemical composition of the matrix, as well as the formation of cracks and porosities. Although energy density was found to be an important factor, the outcome of this study suggests that each of the PPs should be selected carefully. A maximum actuation strain of 1.67% at 400 MPa was obtained for the sample with power, scan speed, and hatch space of 100 W, 400 mm/s, and 140 &micro, m, respectively, while 1.5% actuation strain was obtained for the starting as-cast ingot. These results can serve as a guideline for future studies on optimizing PPs for fabricating functional HTSMAs.

Here, we report a successfully modified Czochralski process system by introducing the cooling system and subsequent examination of the results using crystal growth simulation analysis. Two types of cooling system models have been designed, i.e., long type and double type cooling design (LTCD and DTCD) and their production quality of monocrystalline silicon ingot was compared with that of the basic type cooling design (BTCD) system. The designed cooling system improved the uniformity of the temperature gradient in the crystal and resulted in the significant decrease of the thermal stress. Moreover, the silicon monocrystalline ingot growth rate has been enhanced to 18% by using BTCD system. The detailed simulation results have been discussed in the manuscript. The present research demonstrates that the proposed cooling system would stand as a promising technique to be applied in CZ-Si crystal growth with a large size/high pulling rate.

Background: Uncemented implants are still associated with several major challenges, especially with regard to their manufacturing and their osseointegration. In this study, a novel manufacturing technique&mdash, an optimized form of precision casting&mdash, and a novel surface modification to promote osseointegration&mdash, calcium and phosphorus ion implantation into the implant surface&mdash, were tested in vivo. Methods: Cylindrical Ti6Al4V implants were inserted bilaterally into the tibia of 110 rats. We compared two generations of cast Ti6Al4V implants (CAST 1st GEN, n = 22, and CAST 2nd GEN, n = 22) as well as cast 2nd GEN Ti6Al4V implants with calcium (CAST + CA, n = 22) and phosphorus (CAST + P, n = 22) ion implantation to standard machined Ti6Al4V implants (control, n = 22). After 4 and 12 weeks, maximal pull-out force and bone-to-implant contact rate (BIC) were measured and compared between all five groups. Results: There was no significant difference between all five groups after 4 weeks or 12 weeks with regard to pull-out force (p &gt, 0.05, Kruskal Wallis test). Histomorphometric analysis showed no significant difference of BIC after 4 weeks (p &gt, 0.05, Kruskal&ndash, Wallis test), whereas there was a trend towards a higher BIC in the CAST + P group (54.8% &plusmn, 15.2%), especially compared to the control group (38.6% &plusmn, 12.8%) after 12 weeks (p = 0.053, Kruskal&ndash, Wallis test). Conclusion: In this study, we found no indication of inferiority of Ti6Al4V implants cast with the optimized centrifugal precision casting technique of the second generation compared to standard Ti6Al4V implants. As the employed manufacturing process holds considerable economic potential, mainly due to a significantly decreased material demand per implant by casting near net-shape instead of milling away most of the starting ingot, its application in manufacturing uncemented implants seems promising. However, no significant advantages of calcium or phosphorus ion implantation could be observed in this study. Due to the promising results of ion implantation in previous in vitro and in vivo studies, further in vivo studies with different ion implantation conditions should be considered.

We investigated the texture and the shape change in the equiatomic TiPd alloy, and discussed the relationship between the shape change and the atomic movements associated with martensitic transformation. Thermomechanical analyzer tests indicate that the direction of the shape change was different between the 0&deg, and 90&deg, samples, cutting out parallel and perpendicular to the hearth side of button ingot, respectively. In the 0&deg, sample, shrinking and expansion were observed during the reverse and forward martensitic transformations, respectively, whereas the opposite tendency was confirmed in the 90&deg, sample compared to the 0&deg, sample. During the isobaric test, the martensitic variants were oriented to a (010) plane with compressive loading, and the B2 parent phase crystals also became coarse. There is a close relationship between the shape change due to the crystal orientation by the isobaric test and the shear-shuffling direction due to martensitic transformation.

This paper outlines our effort to optimize PMO (Pulsed Magneto-Oscillation) design in order to improve the efficiency of ingot manufacturing. SPMO-H (Simplified Surface Pulse Magneto-Oscillation) and CPMO-H (Simplified Compound Pulse Magneto-Oscillation) were presented on the basis of SPMO (Surface Pulse Magneto-Oscillation) and CPMO (Compound Pulse Magneto-Oscillation). Our numerical and experimental results showed that optimized PMO coil design offered us a device that enabled the operator to examine and operate the melt more convenient without losing the efficiency and decreasing refinement effect. Our work also showed the distance between the coil and the melt surface had little effect on the grain sizes refined. Therefore, in ingot production, the dropping of melt surface is not a problem for PMO application.

In this study, the sintering behaviors of Nb-6Mo-20Si-3Cr (at percentage) in situ composite powders were studied. The Nb alloy powder was fabricated by a hydrogenation-dehydrogenation method, and both the alloy ingot and powders consisted of two phases: An Nb metal phase and the α-Nb5Si3 phase. Consolidation of the alloy powders was performed at 1500, 1600, and 1700 °C using spark plasma sintering, and the microstructures and phases formed at various sintering temperatures were analyzed. Micropores were observed in the compact sintered at 1500 °C due to the lack of complete densification at that temperature. The densification was completed at 1600 °C and the microstructure was slightly coarsened at 1700 °C compared to the microstructure of the compact sintered at 1600 °C. The microstructures prepared by the powder metallurgy method were finer than the microstructure of the ingot prepared by the casting method. The phase formation behavior varied according to the sintering temperature. Specifically, the α-Nb5Si3 phase, which is a stable structure of the Nb5Si3 phase at a low temperature, was transformed to the β-Nb5Si3 phase (which is stable at a high temperature) with an increasing sintering temperature.

In this paper, the lattice Boltzmann–cellular automata (LBM-CA) model with dynamic and static grids was used to study the growth of three-dimensional (3D) multidendrites under directional solidification with random preferred angles. In the static grid, the temperature field, flow field, and solute field during solidification were calculated by the LBM method, and in the dynamic grid, each dendrite evolution was calculated based on the CA method at its preferential crystallographic orientation. The coupling of LBM and CA was made by interpolation of the correlation quantities between the two sets of grids. The effects of wall-equiaxed crystal density on the number of columnar crystals and the thickness of the equiaxed crystal layer were studied by this model. The results showed that the density of the wall-equiaxed crystal has little effect on the number of columnar crystals and the thickness of the equiaxed crystal layer. When other conditions were the same, the lower the undercooling, the fewer the columnar crystals, and the thicker the equiaxed layer. In addition, the smaller the heat transfer coefficient, the lower the number of columnar grains, and the smaller the thickness of equiaxed grains.

Growing very large size silicon ingots with low dislocation density is a critical issue for the photovoltaic industry to reduce the production cost of the high-efficiency solar cell for affordable green energy. The thermal stresses, which are produced as the result of the non-uniform temperature field, would generate dislocation in the ingot. This is a complicated thermal viscoplasticity process during the cooling process of crystal growth. A nonlinear three-dimensional transient formulation derived from the Hassen-Sumino model (HAS) was applied to predict the number of dislocation densities, which couples the macroscopic viscoplastic deformation with the microscopic dislocation dynamics. A typical cooling process during the growth of very large size (G5 size: 0.84 m &times, 0.84 m &times, 0.3 m) Si ingot is used as an example to validate the developed HAS model and the results are compared with those obtained from qualitatively critical resolved shear stress model (CRSS). The result demonstrates that this finite element model not only predicts a similar pattern of dislocation generation with the CRSS model but also anticipate the dislocation density quantity generated in the Si ingot. A modified cooling process is also employed to study the effect of the cooling process on the generation of the dislocation. It clearly shows that dislocation density is drastically decreased by modifying the cooling process. The results obtained from this model can provide valuable information for engineers to design a better cooling process for reducing the dislocation density produced in the Si ingot under the crystal growth process.

Pre-alloyed micron-sized 6005A Al alloy (AA 6005A) powders, with a Mg/Si atomic ratio of 0.75, obtained by high pressure inert gas atomization were consolidated by uniaxial cold pressing at 200 MPa into cylindrical Al containers and hot extruded at 450, 480 and 500 °C with an extrusion rate of 7:1, followed by artificial T6 precipitation hardening. Ageing conditions were varied between 170 °C and 190 °C and times of 6, 7 and 8 h. The microstructure of the extruded profiles was analysed using X-Ray diffractometry (XRD), light optical microscopy (LOM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to study the possible phase transformations. After our results, the peak-aging hardness condition was achieved at 180 °C for 6 h. Mechanical properties of the powder metallurgy (P/M) aluminium alloys consolidated by hot extrusion were superior to those of the extruded profiles of wrought alloy using conventional ingot metallurgy (I/M) billets. AA 6005A wrought P/M alloy via T6 heat treatment shown yield stress of 317 MPa and elongation of 21% at the extrusion pre-heating temperature of 500 °C.

Macrosegregation, a serious defect formed during the solidification of steel ingots, impairs the performance of the final components. To predict macrosegregation caused by thermal-solutal convection and solid deformation, a volume-averaged single-phase/two-phase integrated model is developed. During the deformation stage, the two-phase model coupling the solid deformation and liquid flow in the mushy zone is utilized. Before or after the deformation stage, the motion of the solid phase is neglected, and the single-phase model is solved. A 450 kg steel ingot punching test is considered for application. The results show that when the solid shell of the ingot is being punched, the solid phase in the mushy core at punching height is compressed, and a relative liquid flow is induced. This in turn causes a transition of positive segregation to negative segregation in the compressed mushy core of the ingot. According to numerical sensitivity tests of different punching parameters, as the punching start time and punching velocity increase, the effect of punching on macrosegregation will be smaller. It is demonstrated that the single-phase/two-phase integrated model can predict macrosegregation in the steel ingots which are deformed during solidification.

Cu-15%Co alloys have been synthesized by an induction furnace adopting electromagnetic stirring (EMS). The liquid-liquid separation behavior and the peritectic reaction under a forced melt flow were analyzed. The specimens were subjected to a conventional induction melting as well as enhanced melt stirring by a two-side electromagnetic stirrer. The stirred ingots showed a significant improvement in dispersivity and homogeneity of the Co-rich phase. Comparing the specimens subjected to different current intensities, we observed strong changes in the phase fraction, the degree of segregation, and the grain size. EMS had an effect of reducing the amount and size of Co-rich droplets and enhancing the amounts of small equiaxed dendrites and dendrite fragments, which led to a more dispersive distribution of &alpha, Co phase and refined the grains of Cu-rich phase. We observed a considerable increase in the fraction of peritectic Cu-rich phase with increasing current intensity of EMS, indicating that the peritectic reaction was promoted by EMS. EMS also reduced the macrosegregation of Co-rich phase in both the vertical and radial direction of the ingot when the current intensity was appropriate.

To accelerate the large-scale cellular automaton (CA) simulation for grain growth, a parallel CA model for grain growth was developed. The model was implemented based on the compute unified device architecture (CUDA) parallel computing platform. The model was verified by the grain growth of a single crystal and the columnar-to-equiaxed transition (CET) of an Al-7wt% Si specimen of uniform undercooling with a constant cooling rate. The grid independence of the model was verified. The grain growth of a plate-like casting of nickel-based superalloy during directional solidification process was simulated and the obtained results of grain density at each section with different heights were compared with the experimental data. The CET transition of directional solidified Al-7wt% Si cylindrical ingot was simulated. The grain texture and cooling curves were in good agreement with experimental results from the literature. Finally, high parallel performance of the CA model was obtained and evaluated.

Experimental aluminum alloy containing 0.8% Ca, 0.5% Zr, 0.5% Fe and 0.25% Si (wt.%), in the form of a long-length rod 12 mm in diameter was manufactured using an electromagnetic casting (EMC) technique. The extremely high cooling rate during alloy solidification (≈104 K/s) caused the formation of a favorable microstructure in the ingot characterized by a small size of the dendritic cells, fine eutectic particles of Ca-containing phases and full dissolution of Zr in Al the solid solution. Due to the microstructure obtained the ingots possess high manufacturability during cold forming (both drawing and rolling). Analysis of the electrical conductivity (EC) and microhardness of the cold rolled strip and cold drawn wire revealed that their temperature dependences are very close. The best combination of hardness and EC in the cold rolled strip was reached after annealing at 450 °C. TEM study of structure evolution revealed that the annealing mode used leads to the formation of L12 type Al3Zr phase precipitates with an average diameter of 10 nm and a high number density. Experimental wire alloy has the best combination of ultimate tensile strength (UTS), electrical conductivity (EC) (200 MPa and 54.8% IACS, respectively) and thermal stability (up to 450 °C) as compared with alloys based on the Al–Zr and Al– rare-earth metal (REM) systems. In addition, it is shown that the presence of calcium in the model alloy increases the electrical conductivity after cold forming operations (both drawing and rolling).

The introduction of directional solidified cast mono silicon promised a combination of the cheaper production via a casting process with monocrystalline material quality, but has been struggling with high concentration of structural defects. The SMART approach uses functional defects to maintain the monocrystalline structure with low dislocation densities. In this work, the feasibility of the SMART approach is shown for larger ingots. A G2 sized crystal with SMART and cast mono silicon parts has been analyzed regarding the structural defects via optical analysis, crystal orientation, and etch pit measurements. Photoluminescence measurements on passivated and processed samples were used for characterization of the electrical material quality. The SMART approach has successfully resulted in a crystal with mono area share over 90% and a confinement of dislocation structures in the functional defect region over the whole ingot height compared to a mono area share of down to 50% and extending dislocation tangles in the standard cast mono Si. Cellular structures in photoluminescence measurements could be attributed to cellular dislocation patterns. The SMART Si material showed very high and most homogeneous lifetime values enabling solar cell efficiencies up to 23.3%.

Texture and microstructure evolution of ingot and twin-roll casted Mg&ndash, Al&ndash, Mn magnesium sheets were examined during deep drawing at elevated temperatures. The twin-roll casted sheets possessed smaller grain sizes and weaker basal intensity levels than the ingot-casted sheets. The strength and elongation at room temperature for the twin-roll casted sheets were greater than those of the ingot-casted sheets. At elevated temperatures, the ingot-casted sheets showed better elongation than the twin-roll casted sheets. Different size and density of precipitates were examined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for both ingot-casted and twin-roll-casted sheets. The deep drawing process was also carried out at various working temperatures and deformation rates, 225&nbsp, &deg, C&nbsp, to&nbsp, 350&nbsp, C and 30 mm/min to 50 mm/min, respectively. The middle wall part of cups were mainly tensile deformation, and the lower bent regions of drawn cups were most thinned region. Overall, the ingot-casted sheets revealed better deep drawability than the twin-roll casted sheets. Microstructure and texture evolution of the top, middle and lower parts of drawn cups were investigated using electron backscatter diffraction. Increased deformation rate is important to activate tensile twins both near the bent and flange areas. Ingot casted sheets revealed more tensile twins than twin-roll casted sheets. Increased working temperature is important to activate non-basal slips and produce the DRXed grain structure in the flange. Dynamic recrystallization were frequently found in the top flanges of the cups. Both tensile twins and non-basal slips contributed to occurrence of the dynamic recrystallization in the flange.

The surface quality of aluminum ingot is crucial for subsequent products, so it is necessary to adaptively detect different types of defects in milled aluminum ingots surfaces. In order to quickly apply the calculations to a real production line, a novel two-stage detection approach is proposed. Firstly, we proposed a novel mask gradient response-based threshold segmentation (MGRTS) in which the mask gradient response is the gradient map after the strong gradient has been eliminated by the binary mask, so that the various defects can be effectively extracted from the mask gradient response map by iterative threshold segmentation. In the region of interest (ROI) extraction, we combine the MGRTS and the Difference of Gaussian (DoG) to effectively improve the detection rate. In the aspect of the defect classification, we train the inception-v3 network with a data augmentation technology and the focal loss in order to overcome the class imbalance problem and improve the classification accuracy. The comparative study shows that the proposed method is efficient and robust for detecting various defects on an aluminum ingot surface with complex milling grain. In addition, it has been applied to the actual production line of an aluminum ingot milling machine, which satisfies the requirement of accuracy and real time very well.

This paper presents a proposal to apply one of the swarm intelligence algorithms, the artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm, to solve the inverse problem of steel ingot continuous casting. The discussed task consists of retrieving the cooling conditions of the process on the basis of temperature measurements and by taking into account the macrosegregation phenomenon. The examined process was modeled by using the mathematical model of solidification within the temperature interval. The solution method was based on the implicit scheme of the finite difference method supplemented by the procedure of correcting the field of temperature in the vicinity of liquidus and solidus curves, which was then used for solving the appropriate direct problem. The computational example, illustrating the stability and accuracy of the proposed method, is also presented in the paper.

The formation and dripping behavior of droplets in the process of the electroslag remelting with two series-connected electrodes (TSCE-ESR) has an important influence on the optimization of power supply parameters and the purity of the electroslag ingot. In this article, through numerical simulation based on the VOF (volume of fluid) model, combined with the transparent experimental device for physical simulation, the mechanism of metal droplet formation and the effect of the filling rate on its droplet behavior were studied. The results showed that the proximity effect, instead of the skin effect, is a major factor influencing droplet formation in TSCE-ESR process. The proximity effect makes the region inside the two electrode tip melt first, and the molten steel converges at the electrode tips to form a droplet source. The process of droplet formation and dropping can be divided into three stages: formation of molten layer, droplet stretching and necking, and detachment. In the stage of droplet stretching and necking, the increase in the contact area between the droplet and the slag and the instantaneous increase of the current provide good thermodynamic and dynamic conditions for the removal of non-metallic inclusions. After the droplet drops into the slag pool, it promotes the flow of slag and improves the heat and mass transfer efficiency of the slag/metal interface. The relatively large filling rate can form smaller and dispersed droplets, which improves the refining effect. At the same time, the increase of the filling rate can improve the input power and the electrode remelting rate.

Homogeneous heat treatment serves the significant roles in eliminating the segregation and tuning the microstructure of alloy ingot. It usually cost tremendous power and time to achieve a homogeneous microstructure for aluminum alloys. In this article, the hot extrusion was directly introduced on the spray deposited aluminum alloy 7055 ingot before performing heat treatment to explore the newly feasible homogeneous routine. Equiaxed grains without dendrites or PPB were obtained in our current parameters of spray deposition, which allowed the as-deposited alloy to be deformed without being subjected to pre-homogeneous heat treatment. Significant amount of stored energy was produced during hot extrusion at 420 &deg, C with area reduction ratio of 6.25, which effectively promoted the homogeneity of microstructure and reduced significantly the heat treatment time. A newly feasible short routine, heat treatment at 450 &deg, C /6 h + 470 &deg, C/1 h following the hot extrusion, proved capable of obtaining a homogeneous microstructure for the spray deposited aluminum alloy 7055.

The impact of microsegregation models on thermophysical properties and solidification behaviors of a high strength steel was investigated. The examined microsegregation models include the classical equilibrium Lever rule, the extreme non-equilibrium Scheil-Gulliver, as well as other treatments in the intermediate regime proposed by Brody and Flemings, Clyne and Kurz, Kobayashi and Ohnaka. Based on the comparative analyses performed on three representative regions with varied secondary dendrite arm spacing sizes, the classical equilibrium Lever rule and non-equilibrium Scheil scheme were employed to determine the thermophysical features of the studied steel, using the experimentally verified models from literature. The evaluated thermophysical properties include effective thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity and density. The calculated thermophysical data were used for three-dimensional simulation of the casting and solidification process of a 40 metric ton steel ingot, using FEM code Thercast&reg, The simulations captured the full filling, the thermo-mechanical phenomena and macro-scale solute transport in the cast ingot. The results demonstrated that Lever rule turned out to be the most reasonable depiction of the physical behavior of steel in study in large-size cast ingot and appropriate for the relevant macrosegregation simulation study. The determination of the model was validated using the experimentally measured top cavity dimension, the thermal profiles on the mold outside surface by means of thermocouples, and the carbon distribution patterns via mass spectrometer analysis.

Cadmium&ndash, magnesium&ndash, telluride (CdMgTe) crystal was regarded as a potential semiconductor material. In this paper, an indium-doped Cd0.95Mg0.05Te ingot with 30 mm diameter and 120 mm length grown by a modified Bridgman method with excess Te condition was developed for room temperature gamma-ray detection. Characterizations revealed that the as-grown Cd0.95Mg0.05Te crystals had a cubic zinc-blende structure and additionally Te-rich second phase existed in the crystals. From the tip to tail of the ingot, the density of Te inclusions was about 103&ndash, 105 cm&minus, 2. The crystals had a suitable band-gap range from 1.52&ndash, 1.54 eV. Both infrared (IR) transmittance and resistivity were relatively low. Photoluminescence measurement indicated that the ingot had more defects. Fortunately, after annealing, IR transmittance and the resistivity were significantly enhanced due to the elimination of Te inclusions. CdMgTe crystal after annealing showed a good crystal quality. The energy resolutions of the detector for 241Am and 137Cs gamma-ray were 12.7% and 8.6%, respectively. The mobility-lifetime product for electron was 1.66 &times, 10&minus, 3 cm2/V. Thus, this material could be used for room temperature radiation detectors.

The addition of Nb can form a eutectic phase with a NiTi matrix in a NiTi-based shape memory alloy, improving the transition hysteresis of the NiTi alloy. A Ni44Ti44Nb12 ingot was prepared using the vacuum induction melting technique. Under compression deformation, the yield strength of the NiTi&ndash, Nb alloy is about 1000 MPa, the maximum compressive strength and strain can reach 3155 MPa and 43%, respectively. Ni44Ti44Nb12 exhibited a superelastic recovery similar to that of the as-cast NiTi50. Meanwhile, the loading&ndash, unloading cycle compression shows that the superelastic recovery strain reached a maximum value (2.32%) when the total strain was about 15%, and the superelasticity tends to rise first and then decrease as the strain increases.

Thermally sprayed stainless-steel coatings were produced with a wide range of deposition parameters. The electrochemical behavior of polished coatings was monitored for 3 weeks in 3.5 wt.% NaCl aqueous solution and compared to that of reference materials including a wrought stainless steel plate and a bulk ingot produced by arc melting of the spraying powder feedstock. Transitions in the polarization behavior are discussed based on the observed changes in coating microstructures as well as on the shifts in X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). Results show that the deposition parameters have a strong effect on the coating microstructures but the small differences in the polarization behavior of coatings mostly disappear after 1 week of testing. Microstructure evidence shows preferential corrosion at splats experiencing melting prior to deposition. Pitting and corrosion products between splat boundaries are also reported. XPS analysis shows that the coating surfaces are enriched in chromium oxides and hydroxides. Comparison between the coating and bulk stainless steels suggests that coating inherent defects play a major role on their impaired corrosion resistance.

Thermodynamic calculations by using Factsage 7.3 and simple protective gas electroslag remelting (ESR) experiments were conducted to design the appropriate ESR slag for remelting the qualified 9CrMoCoB ingot. First, the proper basic slag was determined based on the phase diagram of CaF2&ndash, CaO&ndash, Al2O3&ndash, x%MgO calculated using Factsage 7.3. Second, equilibrium reactions between 9CrMoCoB and the basic slag containing varied SiO2, and B2O3 contents were calculated to study the effects of B2O3 and SiO2 on B, Si, and Al contents in steel. Then, equilibrium reaction experiments were conducted to validate the calculated results. Finally, the appropriate slags were attained and the simple protective Ar gas ESR experiments were conducted to make a verification. Results showed that the liquid phase region of the slag of CaF2&ndash, x%MgO at 1300&ndash, 1400 &deg, C increased first, then decreased with the MgO addition. With the B2O3 content increasing, the boron content increased, while the Si, Al contents decreased, and at a given B2O3 addition, the B and Al contents decreased with the SiO2 content increasing, whereas the Si content increased. The appropriate slags for simple protective gas ESR remelting 9CrMoCoB were 55%CaF2&ndash, 20%CaO&ndash, 3%MgO&ndash, 22%Al2O3&ndash, 2%SiO2&ndash, 1.3%B2O3 and 55%CaF2&ndash, 3%SiO2&ndash, 1.7%B2O3.

A method was developed to fabricate spherical Mo5Si3 powder by milling and spheroidizing using inductively coupled thermal plasma. A Mo5Si3 alloy ingot was fabricated by vacuum arc melting, after which it was easily pulverized into powder by milling due to its brittle nature. The milled powders had an irregular shape, but after being spheroidized by the thermal plasma treatment, they had a spherical shape. Sphericity was increased with increasing plasma power. After plasma treatment, the percentage of the Mo3Si phase had increased due to Si evaporation. The possibility of Si evaporation was thermodynamically analyzed based on the vapor pressure of Mo and Si in the Mo5Si3 liquid mixture. By this process, spherical Mo silicide powders with high purity could be fabricated successfully.

The characteristics of primary carbides in a commercial-sized (one ton) electroslag remelting (ESR) ingot of AISI H13 steel were investigated. The interaction between the primary carbides and inclusions was also clarified. The results indicate that there are two types of primary carbides, V-rich and Mo-rich primary carbides, in the H13 ESR ingot. The quantity, the area fraction, and the size of the two primary carbides tend to decrease from the center of the H13 ESR ingot to the outer surface. Additionally, the V-rich primary carbide is obviously larger than the Mo-rich primary carbide. The Al2O3 inclusion can promote the precipitation of the V-rich primary carbide, while the MnS inclusion encourages the precipitation of Mo-rich primary carbide. The CaO∙Al2O3 inclusion cannot act as the nucleation site for the precipitation of the two primary carbides. The solid fraction that the V-rich primary carbide begins to precipitate ranges from 0.965 to 0.983, and that for the Mo-rich primary carbide and the MnS inclusion change from 0.9990 to 0.9998 and from 0.989 to 0.990, respectively.

The primary phase grain size is a key parameter to understand the formation of the macrosegregation pattern in large steel ingots. Most of the characterization techniques use two-dimensional measurements. In this paper, a characterization method has been developed for equiaxed dendritic grains in industrial steel castings. A total of 383 contours were drawn two-dimensionally on twelve 6.6 cm2slices. A three-dimensional reconstruction method is performed to obtain 171 three-dimensional grains. Data regarding the size, shape and orientation of equiaxed grains is presented and thereby shows that equiaxed grains are centimeter-scale complex objects. They appear to be a poly-dispersed collection of non-isotropic objects possessing preferential orientations. In addition, the volumetric grain number density is 2.2&times, 107 grains/m3, which compares to the 0.5&times, 107 grains/m3 that can be obtained with estimation from 2D measurements. The 2.2&times, 107 grains/m3 value is ten-times smaller than that previously used in the literature to simulate the macrosegregation profile in the same 6.2 ton ingot.

20Mn5 steel is widely used in the manufacture of heavy hydro-generator shaft forging due to its strength, toughness, and wear resistance. However, the hot deformation and recrystallization behaviors of 20Mn5 steel compressed under a high temperature were not studied. For this article, hot compression experiments under temperatures of 850–1200 °C and strain rates of 0.01 s−1–1 s−1 were conducted using a Gleeble-1500D thermo-mechanical simulator. Flow stress-strain curves and microstructure after hot compression were obtained. Effects of temperature and strain rate on microstructure are analyzed. Based on the classical stress-dislocation relationship and the kinetics of dynamic recrystallization, a two-stage constitutive model is developed to predict the flow stress of 20Mn5 steel. Comparisons between experimental flow stress and predicted flow stress show that the predicted flow stress values are in good agreement with the experimental flow stress values, which indicates that the proposed constitutive model is reliable and can be used for numerical simulation of hot forging of 20Mn5 solid steel ingot.

A new phenomenon is described in this paper: the formation of macroscopic channel structures on the bottom of copper ingots which were used as the target for the synthesis of copper nanoparticles by high-power electron beam evaporation and condensation. In the synthesis experiment, the cylindrical copper ingot is melted and partially evaporated in a graphite crucible. The channel structures were originally observed after a series of nanoparticle synthesis experiments in varying conditions. In the present work, various process conditions are varied in order to recreate the structures and identify their mechanism of formation. Conditions in which the channel structures form and do not form are identified and interesting microstructures are observed near the channel structures.

In view of the requirements for mechanical properties and service life above 650 °C, a high-Mn austenitic hot work die steel, instead of traditional martensitic hot work die steel such as H13, was developed in the present study. The effect of heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the newly developed work die steel was studied. The results show that the microstructure of the high-Mn as-cast electroslag remelting (ESR) ingot is composed of γ-Fe, V(C,N), and Mo2C. V(C,N) is an irregular multilateral strip or slice shape with severe angles. Most eutectic Mo2C carbides are lamellar fish-skeleton-like, except for a few that are rod-shaped. With increasing solid solution time and temperature, the increased hardness caused by solid solution strengthening exceeds the effect of decreased hardness caused by grain size growth, but this trend is reversed later. As a result, the hardness of specimens after various solid solution heat treatments increases first and then decreases. The optimal combination of hardness and austenitic grain size can be obtained by soaking for 2 h at 1170 °C. The maximum Rockwell hardness (HRC) is 47.24 HRC, and the corresponding austenite average grain size is 58.4 μm. When the solid solution time is 3 h at 1230 °C, bimodality presented in the histogram of the austenite grain size as a result of further progress in secondary recrystallization. Compared with the single-stage aging, the maximum impact energy of the specimen after two-stage aging heat treatment was reached at 16.2 J and increased by 29.6%, while the hardness decreased by 1–2 HRC. After two-stage aging heat treatment, the hardness of steel reached the requirements of superior grade H13, and the maximum impact energy was 19.6% higher than that of superior grade H13, as specified in NADCA#207-2003.

The effects of ultrasonic treatment (UST) on the solidification microstructure of a 35CrMo steel cast ingot were investigated. To avoid the erosion of a high-temperature melt, a T-shaped ultrasonic waveguide unit was used to introduce ultrasonic vibrations into a 35CrMo steel die casting melt. The experimental results show that the microstructure of the ingot was refined by ultrasonic treatment. While the microstructure of untreated 35CrMo steel is coarse dendritic grains, after the introduction of ultrasonic treatment, the solidification microstructure transforms from coarse dendritic to equiaxed grains, and the dendrites are also refined. Samples from different positions of the ingots were subjected to different ultrasonic effects, and the effects on grain refinement also varied due to the severe attenuation of the ultrasound in the melt. The mechanisms of grain refinement using ultrasonic treatment for 35CrMo steel melt are presented.

The determination of an appropriate amount of turning for superalloy ingot surfaces, in a scientific and reasonable manner, is vital to the improvement of the metallurgical quality and comprehensive performance of superalloy ingots. In the present study, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy, a high-temperature testing machine, a Brinell hardness tester and the Image-Pro Plus software were used to analyze and compare the types and amounts of inclusions, the average area of the (Al,Mg)O inclusions, and the mechanical properties of points at different distances from the edge of the GH4169 superalloy vacuum arc remelting (VAR) ingot edge. The effects of the amount of turning to which the superalloy is subjected, the metallurgical qualities, and the mechanical properties were systematically studied. The results showed that the five inclusion types did not change as the sampling locations moved away from the ingot edge, but the amount of inclusions and the average area of the (Al,Mg)O inclusions first decreased and then stabilized. Similarly, the tensile strength, elongation, section shrinkage, hardness, and fatigue life first increased and then stabilized. Finally, this experiment tentatively determined that an appropriate amount of turning for a GH4169 superalloy ingot is 36&ndash, 48 mm.

Phosphorus is undesirable in steel for it greatly decreases ductility and causes embrittlement in most cases. The kinetic behavior of phosphorus transfer was investigated during electroslag remelting (ESR) of G20CrNi2Mo bearing steel. Four heat treatments were carried out using an industrial furnace with a capacity to refine 2400 kg ingot. It was found the P content in the four ingots were all higher than that in the electrodes, indicating rephosphorization occurs during ESR. A kinetic model based on film and penetration theory was developed to elucidate the variation of phosphorus from metal film to droplet and metal pool. The model indicates that the rate-determining step of phosphorus transfer is at the slag side. Rephosphorization mainly occurs in the metal film and falling droplet. In addition, the effect of P in the slag and electrode, as well as the temperature of the slag pool on the P content in the metal pool were discussed. In order to achieve a low-P ingot of no more than 0.015%, the corresponding maximum P content in slag under the condition of a certain P content in the electrode was proposed.

High-carbon steel wires used for bridge cables, tire reinforcement materials and cutting materials of silicon ingot for photovoltaic industry require an extremely fine diameter and high strength. Poor control of centerline segregation, inclusion and microstructure of high-carbon steel is detrimental to drawability and subsequent fatigue performance. Prof. Weiqing Chen’s group at the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) has been investigating the quality control of high-carbon steel through a low-cost one-stage hot rolling process since 2000. This paper reviews the main research from this group. The laboratory-scale and industrial results are presented. Intensive secondary cooling, final electromagnetic stirring (F-EMS), final permanent magnetic stirring (F-PMS), and soft reduction are investigated and applied to control centerline segregation, and the application scope is also discussed. A combination of redesign of submerged entry nozzle (SEN) and refining slag, utilization of Al-free refractory and the addition of low-melting-point compounds is studied and applied effectively to control inclusions. Measurements and mechanisms to control network cementite, martensite, banded structure and undesired texture are investigated and discussed. Integration of the above research has achieved industrial application in more than 10 steelworks and was further extended to application in spring steel, welding wire steel and some other wire rods.

Computational modeling offers an opportunity for a better understanding and investigation of thermal transfer mechanisms. It can be used for the optimization of the electron beam melting process and for obtaining new materials with improved characteristics that have many applications in the power industry, medicine, instrument engineering, electronics, etc. A time-dependent 3D axis-symmetrical heat model for simulation of thermal transfer in metal ingots solidified in a water-cooled crucible at electron beam melting and refining (EBMR) is developed. The model predicts the change in the temperature field in the casting ingot during the interaction of the beam with the material. A modified Pismen-Rekford numerical scheme to discretize the analytical model is developed. These equation systems, describing the thermal processes and main characteristics of the developed numerical method, are presented. In order to optimize the technological regimes, different criteria for better refinement and obtaining dendrite crystal structures are proposed. Analytical problems of mathematical optimization are formulated, discretized and heuristically solved by cluster methods. Using important for the practice simulation results, suggestions can be made for EBMR technology optimization. The proposed tool is important and useful for studying, control, optimization of EBMR process parameters and improving of the quality of the newly produced materials.

Oxide films or inclusions can reduce the continuity and integrity of materials and they always lead to a significant reduction in the mechanical properties of an aluminum alloy. They can greatly reduce the plastic flow behavior of materials, thus affecting the subsequent processing performance. Therefore, an effective ultrasonic assisted preparation technology has been applied to industrial manufacturing of large-scale aluminum alloy ingots (with diameter: &Phi, = 1250 mm and height: h = 3750 mm). However, the mechanisms of ultrasonic purification on the large-scale ingots are not clear. Therefore, a number of aluminum alloy casting experiments were carried out to produce a conventional hot top semi-continuous ingot (CHTI) and an ultrasonic hot top semi-continuous ingot (UHTI) in this work. The microstructures of CHTI and UHTI were analyzed by optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicated that there were some oxide film defects in the CHTI but some finely dispersed inclusion particles were discovered in the UHTI. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) data showed that the component of inclusion was Al2O3. According to the different cavitation effects of the different areas of the molten aluminum, the process of ultrasonic purification was divided into three periods and the mechanisms in each period were separately studied.
