Background: To evaluate the association between perfusion parameters derived from dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) with prognostic factors in primary rectal cancer patients. Methods: A sample of 51 patients with pathologically proven rectal adenocarcinoma through surgery were retrospectively enrolled. All the patients underwent preoperative DCE-MRI including 3D-spoiled gradient echo. Two radiologists determined the tumor border after radiologic–pathologic correlation and drew regions of interest. The perfusion parameters, including the volume transfer constant (Ktrans), were calculated under the extended Toft model. The prognostic factors included TN stage, circumferential resection margin, extramural venous invasion, Kirsten-ras mutation, tumor size, carcinoembryonic antigen, and tumor differentiation. The association was assessed via correlation or t-test. For significant prognostic factors, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses were performed to estimate the diagnostic predictive values. Results: Ktrans only showed a significant difference according to tumor differentiation, between the well-differentiated (n = 6) and moderately differentiated (n = 45) groups (0.127 ± 0.032, 0.084 ± 0.036, p = 0.036). The AUC was 0.838 (95% CI, 0.702–0.929), and the estimated accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity were 87%, 90%, and 60%, respectively. Conclusions: Ktrans showed a significant difference based on tumor differentiation, which may be conducive to prediction of prognosis in primary rectal cancer.

Surgical techniques are gaining attention for treating physical diseases in aquaculture and aquarium fish. Sturgeon is a suitable species for surgical experiments due to its industrial significance. Maintaining homeostasis is crucial during surgical procedures, and the liver plays a major role in immune regulation. High temperature is suggested to improve physiological activity and wound healing. This study investigated differences in hepatectomy sturgeons' tolerance and histopathological responses of internal organs. Moreover, this study investigated the effects of high temperature on wound healing and hematopoietic recovery in fish undergoing surgical procedures. The liver condition was found to play a pivotal role in the analysis, and cortisol levels were affected by anesthesia. The results showed that high temperature facilitated hematopoietic recovery and wound healing, but excessive induction of physiological activity caused damage. Managing high temperatures and liver condition induced a remarkable improvement in wound healing. However, anesthesia itself can be a significant stressor for fish, and wound healing requires a greater amount of energy. Further research is needed to understand the stress factors caused by surgical procedures and anesthesia and to promote animal welfare in fisheries products.

The appropriate carbapenem use is a critical concern for patient safety, public health, and a national priority. We investigated the nationwide status of carbapenem prescription in patients within their last 14 days of life to guide judicious-use protocols from the previous study comprising of 1,350 decedents. Carbapenem use was universally restricted by computerised authorisation at all centres during the study period. Carbapenem prescribing patterns and their optimality were evaluated. A total of 1201 patients received antimicrobial agents within the last 2 weeks of their lives, of whom 533 (44.4%) received at least one carbapenem. The median carbapenem treatment duration was 7 days. Of the 533 patients receiving carbapenems, 510 (95.7%) patients had microbiological samples drawn and 196 (36.8%) yielded carbapenem-resistant pathogens. A total of 200 (37.5%) were referred to infectious disease (ID) specialists. Of the 333 patients (62.5%) without ID consults, 194 (58.2%) were assessed as “not optimal”: 79 (23.7%) required escalation, 100 (30.0%) required de-escalation, and 15 (4.5%) discontinued. Notwithstanding the existing antibiotic restriction program system, carbapenems are commonly prescribed to patients within their last days of life, a majority of whom do not require it.

There are many methods for crushing seabed rock such as a using a free-falling crusher, blasting, and chemical liquid expansion. Blasting and chemical liquid expansion can lead to environmental destruction, noise pollution, and civil complaints. Therefore, a free-falling crusher is generally recommended for use. Understanding the characteristics of a crusher in water and the impact force on the ground is helpful for designing a crusher and dredge work. In this study, drop tests of 50 and 70 ton crusher models that were scaled down by 15 times were investigated. The tests were conducted in a water basin by the Research Institute of Medium and Small Shipbuilding (RIMS) in Korea. Four water depths were considered with different falling locations: water surface and air. Moreover, a numerical study on Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) analysis for a free-falling crusher was conducted by applying the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) element and the Grüneisen Equation of State (EoS) to fluid models. The crusher and ground were modeled as Lagrangian elements to estimate the impact force on the ground. Before comparing the crusher model, a free-falling sphere model was used to develop FSI technologies by comparing past Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and experimental results. Moreover, the recommended mesh size and fluid domain for FSI analysis are provided to achieve good results via convergence tests. Comparison between experimental and numerical methods demonstrated a similar tendency such that impact force increased at a higher depth. Certain numerical results agree with average values of experimental results; however, multiple numerical cases exhibit a moderate difference. This is because of angular rotation between the crusher and ground when the crusher hits the ground during experiments.

This paper reports the theoretical findings of the new modified type of tuned liquid column ball damper (TLCBD), called a tuned liquid column ball spring damper (TLCBSD). In this new modified form, the ball inside the horizontal section of the damper is attached to the spring. Furthermore, two types of this modified version are proposed, known as a tuned liquid column ball spring sliding damper (TLCBSSD) and a tuned liquid column ball spring rolling damper (TLCBSRD). In the former, the rotational motion of the ball attached to the spring is restricted, whereas in the latter, the ball attached to the spring can translate as well as rotate. Mathematical models and optimum design parameters are formulated for both types. The performance of these new modified damper versions is assessed numerically and subjected to harmonic, seismic, and impulse loadings. The results show that the performance of the newly proposed dampers is relatively better than traditional TLCBDs in harmonic and seismic excitations. The peak response reduction soon after the impact load becomes zero is comparatively better in TLCBSDs over TLCBDs. Overall, the newly proposed passive vibration control devices performed excellently in structure response reduction over TLCBDs.

Iron accumulation in the brain accelerates Alzheimer’s disease progression. To cure iron toxicity, we assessed the therapeutic effects of noncontact transcranial electric field stimulation to the brain on toxic iron deposits in either the Aβ fibril structure or the Aβ plaque in a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) as a pilot study. A capacitive electrode-based alternating electric field (AEF) was applied to a suspension of magnetite (Fe3O4) to measure field-sensitized reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. The increase in ROS generation compared to the untreated control was both exposure-time and AEF-frequency dependent. The frequency-specific exposure of AEF to 0.7–1.4 V/cm on a magnetite-bound Aβ-fibril or a transgenic Alzheimer’s disease (AD) mouse model revealed the degradation of the Aβ fibril or the removal of the Aβ-plaque burden and ferrous magnetite compared to the untreated control. The results of the behavioral tests show an improvement in impaired cognitive function following AEF treatment on the AD mouse model. Tissue clearing and 3D-imaging analysis revealed no induced damage to the neuronal structures of normal brain tissue following AEF treatment. In conclusion, our results suggest that the effective degradation of magnetite-bound amyloid fibrils or plaques in the AD brain by the electro-Fenton effect from electric field-sensitized magnetite offers a potential electroceutical treatment option for AD.

Recent advances in deep learning (DL) and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technologies have made it possible to monitor salt marshes more efficiently and precisely. However, studies have rarely compared the classification performance of DL with the pixel-based method for coastal wetland monitoring using UAV data. In particular, many studies have been conducted at the landscape level; however, little is known about the performance of species discrimination in very small patches and in mixed vegetation. We constructed a dataset based on UAV-RGB data and compared the performance of pixel-based and DL methods for five scenarios (combinations of annotation type and patch size) in the classification of salt marsh vegetation. Maximum likelihood, a pixel-based classification method, showed the lowest overall accuracy of 73%, whereas the U-Net classification method achieved over 90% accuracy in all classification scenarios. As expected, in a comparison of pixel-based and DL methods, the DL approach achieved the most accurate classification results. Unexpectedly, there was no significant difference in overall accuracy between the two annotation types and labeling data sizes in this study. However, when comparing the classification results in detail, we confirmed that polygon-type annotation was more effective for mixed-vegetation classification than the bounding-box type. Moreover, the smaller size of labeling data was more effective for detecting small vegetation patches. Our results suggest that a combination of UAV-RGB data and DL can facilitate the accurate mapping of coastal salt marsh vegetation at the local scale.

Prestressed girders reduce cracking and allow for long spans, but their construction requires complex equipment and strict quality control. Their accurate design depends on a precise knowledge of tensioning force and stresses, as well as monitoring the tendon force to prevent excessive creep. Estimating tendon stress is challenging due to limited access to prestressing tendons. This study utilizes a strain-based machine learning method to estimate real-time applied tendon stress. A dataset was generated using finite element method (FEM) analysis, varying the tendon stress in a 45 m girder. Network models were trained and tested on various tendon force scenarios, with prediction errors of less than 10%. The model with the lowest RMSE was chosen for stress prediction, accurately estimating the tendon stress, and providing real-time tensioning force adjustment. The research offers insights into optimizing girder locations and strain numbers. The results demonstrate the feasibility of using machine learning with strain data for instant tendon force estimation.

A two-dimensional (2D) atomic crystalline transition metal dichalcogenides has shown immense features, aiming for future nanoelectronic devices comparable to conventional silicon (Si). 2D molybdenum ditelluride (MoTe2) has a small bandgap, appears close to that of Si, and is more favorable than other typical 2D semiconductors. In this study, we demonstrate laser-induced p-type doping in a selective region of n-type semiconducting MoTe2 field effect transistors (FET) with an advance in using the hexagonal boron nitride as passivation layer from protecting the structure phase change from laser doping. A single nanoflake MoTe2-based FET, exhibiting initial n-type and converting to p-type in clear four-step doping, changing charge transport behavior in a selective surface region by laser doping. The device shows high electron mobility of about 23.4 cm2V−1s−1 in an intrinsic n-type channel and hole mobility of about 0.61 cm2V−1s−1 with a high on/off ratio. The device was measured in the range of temperature 77–300 K to observe the consistency of the MoTe2-based FET in intrinsic and laser-dopped region. In addition, we measured the device as a complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) inverter by switching the charge-carrier polarity of the MoTe2 FET. This fabrication process of selective laser doping can potentially be used for larger-scale MoTe2 CMOS circuit applications.

Epidural and intrathecal routes are the most effective drug administration methods for pain management in clinical and experimental medicine to achieve quick results, reduce required drug dosages, and overcome the adverse effects associated with the oral and parenteral routes. Beyond pain management with analgesics, the intrathecal route is more widely used for stem cell therapy, gene therapy, insulin delivery, protein therapy, and drug therapy with agonist, antagonist, or antibiotic drugs in experimental medicine. However, clear information regarding intrathecal and epidural drug delivery in rats and mice is lacking, despite differences from human medicine in terms of anatomical space and proximity to the route of entry. In this study, we discussed and compared the anatomical locations of the epidural and intrathecal spaces, cerebrospinal fluid volume, dorsal root ganglion, techniques and challenges of epidural and intrathecal injections, dosage and volume of drugs, needle and catheter sizes, and the purpose and applications of these two routes in different disease models in rats and mice. We also described intrathecal injection in relation to the dorsal root ganglion. The accumulated information about the epidural and intrathecal delivery routes could contribute to better safety, quality, and reliability in experimental research.

Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) with an apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) value is a relatively new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequence that provides functional information on the lesion by measuring the microscopic movement of water molecules. While numerous studies have evaluated the promising role of DWI in musculoskeletal radiology, most have focused on tumorous diseases related to cellularity. This review article aims to summarize DWI-acquisition techniques, considering pitfalls such as T2 shine-through and T2 black-out, and their usefulness in interpreting musculoskeletal diseases with imaging. DWI is based on the Brownian motion of water molecules within the tissue, achieved by applying diffusion-sensitizing gradients. Regardless of the cellularity of the lesion, several pitfalls must be considered when interpreting DWI with ADC values in musculoskeletal radiology. This review discusses the application of DWI in musculoskeletal diseases, including tumor and tumor mimickers, as well as non-tumorous diseases, with a focus on lesions demonstrating T2 shine-through and T2 black-out effects. Understanding these pitfalls of DWI can provide clinically useful information, increase diagnostic accuracy, and improve patient management when added to conventional MRI in musculoskeletal diseases.

Currently, there are three major assaying methods used to validate in vitro whitening activity from natural products: methods using mushroom tyrosinase, human tyrosinase, and dopachrome tautomerase (or tyrosinase-related protein-2, TRP-2). Whitening agent development consists of two ways, melanin synthesis inhibition in melanocytes and downregulation of melanocyte stimulation. For melanin levels, the melanocyte cell line has been used to examine melanin synthesis with the expression levels of TRP-1 and TRP-2. The proliferation of epidermal surfaced cells and melanocytes is stimulated by cellular signaling receptors, factors, or mediators including endothelin-1, α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone, nitric oxide, histamine, paired box 3, microphthalmia-associated transcription factor, pyrimidine dimer, ceramide, stem cell factors, melanocortin-1 receptor, and cAMP. In addition, the promoter region of melanin synthetic genes including tyrosinase is upregulated by melanocyte-specific transcription factors. Thus, the inhibition of growth and melanin synthesis in gene expression levels represents a whitening research method that serves as an alternative to tyrosinase inhibition. Many researchers have recently presented the bioactivity-guided fractionation, discovery, purification, and identification of whitening agents. Melanogenesis inhibition can be obtained using three different methods: tyrosinase inhibition, copper chelation, and melanin-related protein downregulation. There are currently four different types of inhibitors characterized based on their enzyme inhibition mechanisms: competitive, uncompetitive, competitive/uncompetitive mixed-type, and noncompetitive inhibitors. Reversible inhibitor types act as suicide substrates, where traditional inhibitors are classified as inactivators and reversible inhibitors based on the molecule-recognizing properties of the enzyme. In a minor role, transcription factors can also be downregulated by inhibitors. Currently, the active site copper iron-binding inhibitors such as kojic acid and chalcone exhibit tyrosinase inhibitory activity. Because the tyrosinase catalysis site structure is important for the mechanism determination of tyrosinase inhibitors, understanding the enzyme recognition and inhibitory mechanism of inhibitors is essential for the new development of tyrosinase inhibitors. The present review intends to classify current natural products identified by means of enzyme kinetics and copper chelation to exhibit tyrosinase enzyme inhibition.

A wireless, wearable Doppler ultrasound offers a new paradigm for linking physiology to resuscitation medicine. To this end, the image analysis of simultaneously-acquired venous and arterial Doppler spectrograms attained by wearable ultrasound represents a new source of hemodynamic data. Previous investigators have reported a direct relationship between the central venous pressure (CVP) and the ratio of the internal jugular-to-common carotid artery diameters. Because Doppler power is directly related to the number of red cell scatterers within a vessel, we hypothesized that (1) the ratio of internal jugular-to-carotid artery Doppler power (V/APOWER) would be a surrogate for the ratio of the vascular areas of these two vessels and (2) the V/APOWER would track the anticipated CVP change during simulated hemorrhage and resuscitation. To illustrate this proof-of-principle, we compared the change in V/APOWER obtained via a wireless, wearable Doppler ultrasound to B-mode ultrasound images during a head-down tilt. Additionally, we elucidated the change in the V/APOWER during simulated hemorrhage and transfusion via lower body negative pressure (LBNP) and release. With these Interesting Images, we show that the Doppler V/APOWER ratio qualitatively tracks anticipated changes in CVP (e.g., cardiac preload) which is promising for both diagnosis and management of hemodynamic unrest.

A new hydrocarbon-based (HC) composite membrane was developed using liquid crystal polymer (LCP)-nonwoven fabrics for application in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE). A copolymer of sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) with a sulfonation degree of 50 mol% (SPAES50) was utilized as an ionomer for the HC membranes and impregnated into the LCP-nonwoven fabrics without any surface treatment of the LCP. The physical interlocking structure between the SPAES50 and LCP-nonwoven fabrics was investigated, validating the outstanding mechanical properties and dimensional stability of the composite membrane in comparison to the pristine membrane. In addition, the through-plane proton conductivity of the composite membrane at 80 °C was only 15% lower than that of the pristine membrane because of the defect-free impregnation state, minimizing the decrease in the proton conductivity caused by the non-proton conductive LCP. During the electrochemical evaluation, the superior cell performance of the composite membrane was evident, with a current density of 5.41 A/cm2 at 1.9 V, compared to 4.65 A/cm2 for the pristine membrane, which can be attributed to the smaller membrane resistance of the composite membrane. From the results of the degradation rates, the prepared composite membrane also showed enhanced cell efficiency and durability during the PEMWE operations.

Background: Bloodstream infection (BSI) caused by carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) significantly influences patient morbidity and mortality. We aimed to identify the characteristics, outcomes, and risk factors of mortality in adult patients with CRE bacteremia and elucidate the differences between carbapenemase-producing (CP)-CRE BSI and non-CP-CRE BSI. Methods: This retrospective study included 147 patients who developed CRE BSI between January 2016 and January 2019 at a large tertiary care hospital in South Korea. The patient demographic characteristics and clinical and microbiological data including the Enterobacteriaceae species and carbapenemase type were obtained and analyzed. Results: Klebsiella pneumoniae was the most commonly detected pathogen (80.3%), followed by Escherichia coli (15.0%). In total, 128 (87.1%) isolates were found to express carbapenemase, and most CP-CRE isolates harbored blaKPC. The 14-day and 30-day mortality rates for CRE BSI were 34.0% and 42.2%, respectively. Higher body mass index (odds ratio (OR), 1.123; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.012–1.246; p = 0.029), higher sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score (OR, 1.206; 95% CI, 1.073–1.356; p = 0.002), and previous antibiotic use (OR, 0.163; 95% CI, 0.028–0.933; p = 0.042) were independent risk factors for the 14-day mortality. A high SOFA score (OR, 1.208; 95% CI; 1.081–0.349; p = 0.001) was the only independent risk factor for 30-day mortality. Carbapenemase production and appropriate antibiotic treatment were not associated with high 14- or 30-day mortality rates. Conclusions: Mortality from CRE BSI was related to the severity of the infection rather than to carbapenemase production or antibiotic treatment, showing that efforts to prevent CRE acquisition rather than treatment following CRE BSI detection would be more effective at reducing mortality.

Although it has no known biochemical role in living organisms, bismuth has been used to treat syphilis, diarrhea, gastritis and colitis for almost a century due to its nontoxic nature to mammalian cells. When prepared via a top-down sonication route from a bulk sample, bismuth subcarbonate (BiO)2CO3 nanoparticles (NPs) with an average size of 5.35 ± 0.82 nm exhibit broad-spectrum potent antibacterial activity against both the gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria including methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (DSSA), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), drug-susceptible Pseudomonas aeruginosa (DSPA) and multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (DRPA). Specifically, the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) are 2.0 µg/mL against DSSA and MRSA and 0.75 µg/mL against DSPA and DRPA. In sharp contrast to ciprofloxacin, AgNPs and meropenem, (BiO)2CO3 NPs show no sign of developing Bi-resistant phenotypes after 30 consecutive passages. On the other hand, such NPs can readily overcome the resistance to ciprofloxacin, AgNPs and meropenem in DSPA. Finally, the combination of (BiO)2CO3 NPs and meropenem shows a synergistic effect with the fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) index of 0.45.

The core design elements of the motor for the co-robot joint are miniaturization and high torque. In this paper, a dual rotor axial-flux permanent magnet (DRAFPM) motor is proposed to improve the performance of robot joints. DRAFPM motors have the advantage of reducing iron loss and minimizing volume because they can remove stator yoke. When designing a motor with the same volume, it can be designed to increase the height of the fixed ruler by the thickness of the yoke of the fixed ruler and increase the number of turns. In the case of existing axial-flux permanent magnet (AFPM) motors, the shape of the three-dimensional structure is limited by radial laminating of stator. Therefore, considering the production of 3D printing, the shape of stator shoe is designed. The optimal design problem of DRAFPM motor consists of real and integer design variables. In addition, due to the structural characteristics of DRAFPM motors, 3D finite element analysis (FEA) is required, so it takes a long time to interpret. Therefore, this paper proposes an efficient optimal design process to optimize the remaining real design variables after prioritizing the integer design variables. The proposed optimization process is applied to the DRAFPM motor for robot joints, and the optimal design plan satisfying the design function is derived from various design variables to prove the validity of the optimization process.

This study investigated the immunogenicity of, and reactogenicity to, the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine according to pre-existing adenovirus immunity. Individuals scheduled for COVID-19 vaccination were prospectively enrolled in a tertiary hospital with 2400 beds from March 2020 onwards. Pre-existing adenovirus immunity data was obtained before ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccination. A total of 68 adult patients administered two doses of the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine were enrolled. Pre-existing adenovirus immunity was identified in 49 patients (72.1%), but not in the remaining 19 patients (27.9%). The geometric mean titer of S-specific IgG antibodies was statistically higher in individuals without pre-existing adenovirus immunity at several time points: before the second ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 dose (56.4 (36.6–125.0) vs. 51.0 (17.9–122.3), p = 0.024), 2–3 weeks after the second ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 dose (629.5 (451.5–926.5) vs. 555.0 (287.3–926.0), p = 0.049), and 3 months after the second ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 dose (274.5 (160.5–655.3) vs. 176.0 (94.3–255.3), p = 0.033). In the absence of pre-existing adenovirus immunity, systemic events were observed with higher frequency, especially chills (73.7% vs. 31.9%, p = 0.002). In conclusion, individuals without pre-existing adenovirus immunity showed a higher immune response to ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccination and a higher frequency of reactogenicity to ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccination was observed.

Recently, high-speed motors are receiving a lot of attention in the industrial field. When driving a motor at high speed, the advantages include high power density, high efficiency, and miniaturization. However, the disadvantages of the high-speed operation of motors are mechanical and structural safety. This is because the bearings used in high-speed motors require characteristics such as precision and low friction. There are two prominent types of bearings mainly used in high-speed motors: rolling bearings and magnetic bearings. A feature of rolling bearings is that they reduce frictional resistance by contacting points or lines between the shaft and the bearing. However, the disadvantages of rolling bearings are high mechanical friction losses due to the need for contact with the lubrication system. Maintenance costs are high. For this reason, a lot of research on bearings is being conducted to reduce the frictional loss of bearings and increase their efficiency and reliability. Bearings that are advantageous for high-speed operation are magnetic bearings that do not require lubricants, have no friction loss, and have low maintenance. However, magnetic bearings have disadvantages such as high cost and difficulty in miniaturization. In this paper, a stator with a separated teeth structure was used to compensate for these disadvantages. Using this, a model with miniaturization, light weight, and high manufacturability was proposed. The model name proposed in this study is called the STMB (separated teeth magnetic bearing). There are also disadvantages of the STMB model proposed in this paper. A model that compensates for this drawback is called the HSTMB (hybrid separated teeth magnetic bearing). The HSTMB reduces the weight by removing the back yoke of the stator and has advantages of a high filling rate and high productivity in the form of a module. As a result, high productivity, light weight, and high performance are possible when the HSTMB is applied, which was proven through FEA (finite element analysis).

Red sea bream iridovirus (RSIV) causes significant economic losses in aquaculture. Here, we analyzed the pathogenicity, viral shedding, and transmission dynamics of RSIV in rock bream (Oplegnathus fasciatus) by employing immersion infection and cohabitation challenge models. Rock bream challenged by immersion exposure exhibited 100% mortality within 35 days post RSIV exposure, indicating that the viral shedding in seawater peaked after mortality. At 25 °C, a positive correlation between the viral loads within infected rock bream and virus shedding into the seawater was observed. Specific RSIV lesions were observed in the spleen and kidney of the infected rock bream, and the viral load in the spleen had the highest correlation with the histopathological grade. A cohabitation challenge mimicking the natural transmission conditions was performed to assess the virus transmission and determine the pathogenicity and viral load. The RSIV-infected rock breams (donors) were cohabited with uninfected rock bream, red sea bream (Pagrus major), and flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) (recipients) at both 25 °C and 15 °C. In the cohabitation challenge group maintained at 15 °C, no mortality was observed across all experimental groups. However, RSIV was detected in both seawater and the recipient fish. Our results provide preliminary data for further epidemiological analyses and aid in the development of preventive measures and management of RSIVD in aquaculture.

NANOG, a stemness-associated transcription factor, is highly expressed in many cancers and plays a critical role in regulating tumorigenicity. Transformation/transcription domain-associated protein (TRRAP) has been reported to stimulate the tumorigenic potential of cancer cells and induce the gene transcription of NANOG. This study aimed to investigate the role of the TRRAP-NANOG signaling pathway in the tumorigenicity of cancer stem cells. We found that TRRAP overexpression specifically increases NANOG protein stability by interfering with NANOG ubiquitination mediated by FBXW8, an E3 ubiquitin ligase. Mapping of NANOG-binding sites using deletion mutants of TRRAP revealed that a domain of TRRAP (amino acids 1898–2400) is responsible for binding to NANOG and that the overexpression of this TRRAP domain abrogated the FBXW8-mediated ubiquitination of NANOG. TRRAP knockdown decreased the expression of CD44, a cancer stem cell marker, and increased the expression of P53, a tumor suppressor gene, in HCT-15 colon cancer cells. TRRAP depletion attenuated spheroid-forming ability and cisplatin resistance in HCT-15 cells, which could be rescued by NANOG overexpression. Furthermore, TRRAP knockdown significantly reduced tumor growth in a murine xenograft transplantation model, which could be reversed by NANOG overexpression. Together, these results suggest that TRRAP plays a pivotal role in the regulation of the tumorigenic potential of colon cancer cells by modulating NANOG protein stability.

Silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) are most effective against pathogens and have widely been studied as antibacterial agents in commodity clothing, medical textile, and other hygiene products. However, prolonged utilization of silver and rapid mutation in bacterium stains has made them resistant to conventional silver agents. On the other hand, strict compliance against excessive utilization of toxic reagents and the current sustainability drive is forcing material synthesis toward green routes with extended functionality. In this study, we proposed an unprecedented chemical-free green synthesis of bioactive Ag-NPs without the incorporation of any chemicals. Cinnamon essential oil (ECO) was used as a bio-reducing agent with and without the mediation of lime extract. A rapid reaction completion with better shape and size control was observed in the vicinity of lime extract when incorporated into the reaction medium. The interaction of natural metabolites and citrus compounds with nanoparticles was established using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy. The application of as-prepared nanoparticles on textiles encompasses extended bioactivity to treated fabric with infused easy-care performance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported instance of utilizing bioactive silver nanoparticles as a functional finish, both as an antimicrobial and as for easy care in the absolute absence of toxic chemicals. The easy-care performance of fabric treated with lime-mediated nanoparticles was found to be 141O, which is around 26% better than bare cotton without any significant loss in fabric strength. Furthermore, to enlighten the sustainability of the process, the development traits were mapped with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which show significant influence on SDGs 3, 8, 9, and 14. With the effective suspension of microorganisms, added functionality, and eco-mapping with SDGs with the chemical-free synthesis of nanoparticles, widespread utilization can be found in various healthcare and hygiene products along with the fulfillment of sustainability needs.

(1) Background: A delaminated tear is described as a horizontal split in the tendon substance. This review summarizes the clinical and radiologic characteristics of delaminated tears of the rotator cuff. (2) Methods: Initial radiological characteristics of a delaminated tear include the horizontal component of a partial-thickness tear determined using magnetic resonance (MR) arthrography. As demonstrated using indirect MR arthrography, the tear gradually progresses to be defined as either horizontal intrasubstantial splitting of the bursal and articular layers or differential retraction of the bursal and articular layers. (3) Results: The existence of delaminated tears is a poor prognostic factor in functional and morphologic outcomes after the repair of rotator cuff tendons and many surgical techniques have been introduced to solve this problem. Although the presence of a delaminated tear does not affect the arthroscopic repair outcome, the presence of medium-to-large, retracted delaminated tears may be an adverse negative prognostic factor after single-row repair. (4) Conclusion: Advances in imaging and surgical techniques have improved the detection of delaminated rotator cuff tears. Preoperative identification of delaminated tears on magnetic resonance imaging is clinically important because tailored surgical repair techniques must be chosen for successful outcomes.

Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) is one of the most widely used isothermal amplification technologies in molecular diagnostics. However, LAMP operates at a high temperature of 65 °C; thus, operating LAMP at a lower temperature is desirable to maximize its usefulness for on-site diagnosis. In this study, we propose a new version of LAMP, termed low-temperature LAMP, which operates at the physiological temperature of 37 °C. Low-temperature LAMP differs from conventional LAMP operating at 65 °C in terms of the concentrations of MgSO4 and deoxyribonucleoside triphosphates (dNTPs), as well as the lengths of DNA probes, which are crucial for the execution of low-temperature LAMP. Under the optimal conditions, the amplification efficiency of low-temperature LAMP is comparable to that of conventional LAMP. In addition, the ligation reaction at 37 °C, which is necessary to detect actual target nucleic acids, is combined without altering the temperature, enabling the identification of miR-21, a cancer-promoting oncogenic miRNA, with high sensitivity and selectivity. The method described in this paper does not require expensive DNA modifications or special additives and would facilitate the widespread application of LAMP in facility-limited or point-of-care settings, paving the way to improvements in other isothermal-amplification-based techniques.

Chondrosarcomas can be classified into various forms according to the presence or absence of a precursor lesion, location, and histological subtype. The new 2020 World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Tumors of Soft Tissue and Bone classifies chondrogenic bone tumors as benign, intermediate (locally aggressive), or malignant, and separates atypical cartilaginous tumors (ACTs) and chondrosarcoma grade 1 (CS1) as intermediate and malignant tumors. respectively. Furthermore, the classification categorizes chondrosarcomas (including ACT) into eight subtypes: central conventional (grade 1 vs. 2–3), secondary peripheral (grade 1 vs. 2–3), periosteal, dedifferentiated, mesenchymal, and clear cell chondrosarcoma. Most chondrosarcomas are the low-grade, primary central conventional type. The rarer subtypes include clear cell, mesenchymal, and dedifferentiated chondrosarcomas. Comprehensive analysis of the characteristic imaging findings can help differentiate various forms of chondrosarcomas. However, distinguishing low-grade chondrosarcomas from enchondromas or high-grade chondrosarcomas is radiologically and histopathologically challenging, even for experienced radiologists and pathologists.

As the IMO aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships by more than 50% by 2050 compared to 2008, the paradigm of the shipbuilding and shipping industries is changing. The use of carbon-free fuels, such as hydrogen and ammonia, is progressing, along with the incorporation of batteries and fuel cells in ships. With the introduction of various propulsion power sources, the application of electric propulsion systems to ships is also expected to accelerate. The verification of reliability and safety is of paramount importance in the development of new technologies designed in response to environmental regulations. However, maritime demonstration is time-consuming and expensive. Therefore, an effective means of demonstrating the performance, reliability, and safety of various marine carbon-neutral technologies with a small burden is required. This study introduces a ship design for marine demonstration, integrating eco-friendly alternative fuels and electric propulsion system components. We further demonstrate a preparation process for the realization of marine carbon neutrality and future ship design through international joint research, standardization, and ship development, which can be linked to manpower training.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is an emerging technology that is revolutionizing the discovery of new materials. One key application of AI is virtual screening of chemical libraries, which enables the accelerated discovery of materials with desired properties. In this study, we developed computational models to predict the dispersancy efficiency of oil and lubricant additives, a critical property in their design that can be estimated through a quantity named blotter spot. We propose a comprehensive approach that combines machine learning techniques with visual analytics strategies in an interactive tool that supports domain experts’ decision-making. We evaluated the proposed models quantitatively and illustrated their benefits through a case study. Specifically, we analyzed a series of virtual polyisobutylene succinimide (PIBSI) molecules derived from a known reference substrate. Our best-performing probabilistic model was Bayesian Additive Regression Trees (BART), which achieved a mean absolute error of 5.50±0.34 and a root mean square error of 7.56±0.47, as estimated through 5-fold cross-validation. To facilitate future research, we have made the dataset, including the potential dispersants used for modeling, publicly available. Our approach can help accelerate the discovery of new oil and lubricant additives, and our interactive tool can aid domain experts in making informed decisions based on blotter spot and other key properties.

This paper is devoted to double phase anisotropic variational problems for the case of a combined effect of concave–convex nonlinearities when the convex term does not require the Ambrosetti–Rabinowitz condition. The aim of the present paper, on a class of superlinear term which is different from the previous related works, is to discuss the multiplicity result of non-trivial solutions by applying the dual fountain theorem as the main tool. In particular, our main result is obtained without assuming the conditions on the nonlinear term at infinity.

In this study, an experiment was conducted to suggest optimal daytime temperature and light intensity for cucumber scion and rootstock production in a plant factory with artificial light. Plant growth of cucumber scions and rootstocks at a day/night temperature of 26/18 °C and photosynthetic photon fluxes of 50, 120, 190, 260, 330, and 400 μmol·m−2·s−1 was investigated. Plant growth under daytime temperatures of 25/18, 26/18, 27/18, and 28/18 °C at a photosynthetic photon flux of 260 μmol·m−2·s−1 was investigated. As the photosynthetic photon flux increased, hypocotyl length was shortened in cucumber scions and rootstocks, but Dickson quality index, compactness, and Seedling Health Index were improved. As the daytime temperature increased, the hypocotyl length of cucumber scions increased, but the quality of seedlings decreased. The root growth of scions decreased as the daytime temperature increased. As for the correlation between the major growth indicators, Dickson quality index, compactness, and Seedling Health Index showed a high correlation of more than 0.8 in stem diameter, leaf, and root weight. Therefore, it is judged that it is most efficient to maintain the photosynthetic photon flux at 260 μmol·m−2·s−1 throughout the year and adjust the daytime temperature to 25 to 28 °C according to the season for farms and commercial nurseries that produce cucumber seedlings by installing plant factories with artificial light.

The PMSM (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) is being studied a lot in traction motors for high efficiency and high performance. Usually, magnets containing rare earth elements are used. However, since rare earth elements are not suitable for future industries due to their limited reserves, many studies on magnets excluding rare earth elements are being conducted. Magnets excluding rare earth elements have a low coercive force and are vulnerable to irreversible demagnetization, so their design must be robust. Additionally, the design used for reducing the cogging torque, which is a major variable of traction motors, is also important. Therefore, in this study, a design process for reducing irreversible demagnetization and cogging torque is proposed. There are three methods for this process. The first one is the application of the tapering structure, and the second one is the tapering skew structure. The third one is the application of an asymmetric air hole. As a result of these methods, the target irreversible demagnetization ratio was satisfied and the cogging torque was reduced. This was proven through FEA (Finite Element Analysis) and verified by comparing and analyzing the experimental results and simulation results of actual manufacturing.

Ni (hydr)oxide is a promising and inexpensive material for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts and is known to dramatically increase the activity when used with Fe. Herein, we basified a Ni(II) solution and coated layered Ni(OH)2 on Ni coins to prepare a template with high stability and activity. To evaluate the stability and catalytic activity during high-current-density operation, we analyzed the electrochemical and physicochemical properties before and after constant current (CC) operation. The electrode with a Ni(OH)2 surface exhibited higher initial activity than that with a NiO surface; however, after the OER operation at a high-current density, degradation occurred owing to structural destruction. The activity of the electrodes with a NiO surface improved after the CC operation because of the changes on the electrode-surface caused by the CC operation and the subsequent Fe incorporation from the Fe impurity in the electrolyte. After confirming the improvement in activity due to Fe, we prepared NiFe-oxide electrodes with improved catalytic activity and optimized the Ni precursor and Fe loading solution concentrations. The Ni-Fe oxide electrode prepared under the optimal concentrations exhibited an overpotential of 287 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm2, and a tafel slope of 37 mV dec−1, indicating an improvement in the OER activity.

At a disaster site, unforeseen circumstances can severely limit the activities of rescue workers. The best solution is for a cooperative team of robots and rescue workers to complete the rescue work. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a simple and low-cost sensing and control architecture for a search and rescue assistant robot using a thermal infrared sensor array, an ultrasonic sensor, and a three-axis accelerometer. In the proposed architecture, we estimate the location of human survivors using a low-cost thermal IR sensor array and generate and control the trajectory of approaching the searched human survivors. Obstacle avoidance and control are also possible through 3D position estimation of obstacles using 1D ultrasonic sensor integration. In addition, a three-axis accelerometer is used to estimate the tilt angle of the robot according to terrain conditions, and horizontal control of the storage box angle is performed using this feature. A prototype robot was implemented to experimentally validate its performance and can be easily constructed from inexpensive, commonly available parts. The implementation of this system is simple and cost-effective, making it a viable solution for search and rescue operations. The experimental results have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method, showing that it is capable of achieving a level storage box and identifying the location of survivors while moving on a sloped terrain.

Recent deep learning algorithms have further improved risk classification capabilities. However, an appropriate feature selection method is required to overcome dimensionality issues in population-based genetic studies. In this Korean case–control study of nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P), we compared the predictive performance of models that were developed by using the genetic-algorithm-optimized neural networks ensemble (GANNE) technique with those models that were generated by eight conventional risk classification methods, including polygenic risk score (PRS), random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), and deep-learning-based artificial neural network (ANN). GANNE, which is capable of automatic input SNP selection, exhibited the highest predictive power, especially in the 10-SNP model (AUC of 88.2%), thus improving the AUC by 23% and 17% compared to PRS and ANN, respectively. Genes mapped with input SNPs that were selected by using a genetic algorithm (GA) were functionally validated for risks of developing NSCL/P in gene ontology and protein–protein interaction (PPI) network analyses. The IRF6 gene, which is most frequently selected via GA, was also a major hub gene in the PPI network. Genes such as RUNX2, MTHFR, PVRL1, TGFB3, and TBX22 significantly contributed to predicting NSCL/P risk. GANNE is an efficient disease risk classification method using a minimum optimal set of SNPs; however, further validation studies are needed to ensure the clinical utility of the model for predicting NSCL/P risk.

Block copolymers generally have peculiar morphological characteristics, such as strong phase separation. They have been actively applied to polymer electrolyte membranes for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) to obtain well-defined hydrophilic regions and water channels as a proton pathway. Although molecular simulation tools are advantageous to investigate the mechanism of water channel formation based on the chemical structure and property relationships, classical molecular dynamics simulation has limitations regarding the model size and time scale, and these issues need to be addressed. In this study, we investigated the morphology of sulfonated block copolymers synthesized for PEM applications using a mesoscale simulation based on the dynamic mean-field density functional method, widely applied to investigate macroscopic systems such as polymer blends, micelles, and multi-block/grafting copolymers. Despite the similar solubility parameters of the monomers in our block-copolymer models, very different morphologies in our 3D mesoscale models were obtained. The model with sulfonated monomers, in which the number of sulfonic acid groups is twice that of the other model, showed better phase separation and water channel formation, despite the short length of its hydrophilic block. In conclusion, this unexpected behavior indicates that the role of water molecules is important in making PEM mesoscale models well-equilibrated in the mesoscale simulation, which results in the strong phase separation between hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions and the ensuing well-defined water channel. PEM synthesis supports the conclusion that using the sulfonated monomers with a high sulfonation degree (32.5 mS/cm) will be more effective than using the long hydrophilic block with a low sulfonation degree (25.2 mS/cm).
