This work proposes an intelligent grey-wolf-optimizer-improved Apriori algorithm (GWO-Apriori) to mine the association rules of hidden dangers in hydrogen pipeline transmission stations. The optimal minimum support and minimum confidence are determined by GWO instead of the time-consuming trial approach. Experiments show that the average support and average confidence of association rules using GWO-Apriori increase by 29.8% and 21.3%, respectively, when compared with traditional Apriori. Overall, 59 ineffective association rules out of the total 105 rules are filtered by GWO, which dramatically improves data mining effectiveness. Moreover, 23 illogical association rules are excluded, and 12 new strong association rules ignored by the traditional Apriori are successfully mined. Compared with the inefficient and labor-intensive manual investigation, the intelligent GWO-Apriori algorithm dramatically improves pertinency and efficiency of hidden danger identification in hydrogen pipeline transmission stations.

Flooding is a recurrent hazard occurring worldwide, resulting in severe losses. The preparation of a flood susceptibility map is a non-structural approach to flood management before its occurrence. With recent advances in artificial intelligence, achieving a high-accuracy model for flood susceptibility mapping (FSM) is challenging. Therefore, in this study, various artificial intelligence approaches have been utilized to achieve optimal accuracy in flood susceptibility modeling to address this challenge. By incorporating the grey wolf optimizer (GWO) metaheuristic algorithm into various models—including recurrent neural networks (RNNs), support vector regression (SVR), and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost)—the objective of this modeling is to generate flood susceptibility maps and evaluate the variation in model performance. The tropical Manimala River Basin in India, severely battered by flooding in the past, has been selected as the test site. This modeling utilized 15 conditioning factors such as aspect, enhanced built-up and bareness index (EBBI), slope, elevation, geomorphology, normalized difference water index (NDWI), plan curvature, profile curvature, soil adjusted vegetation index (SAVI), stream density, soil texture, stream power index (SPI), terrain ruggedness index (TRI), land use/land cover (LULC) and topographic wetness index (TWI). Thus, six susceptibility maps are produced by applying the RNN, SVR, XGBoost, RNN-GWO, SVR-GWO, and XGBoost-GWO models. All six models exhibited outstanding (AUC above 0.90) performance, and the performance ranks in the following order: RNN-GWO (AUC: 0.968) > XGBoost-GWO (AUC: 0.961) > SVR-GWO (AUC: 0.960) > RNN (AUC: 0.956) > XGBoost (AUC: 0.953) > SVR (AUC: 0.948). It was discovered that the hybrid GWO optimization algorithm improved the performance of three models. The RNN-GWO-based flood susceptibility map shows that 8.05% of the MRB is very susceptible to floods. The modeling found that the SPI, geomorphology, LULC, stream density, and TWI are the top five influential conditioning factors.

Three-dimensional registration with the affine transform is one of the most important steps in 3D reconstruction. In this paper, the modified grey wolf optimizer with behavior considerations and dimensional learning (BCDL-GWO) algorithm as a registration method is introduced. To refine the 3D registration result, we incorporate the iterative closet point (ICP). The BCDL-GWO with ICP method is implemented on the scanned commercial orthodontic tooth and regular tooth models. Since this is a registration from multi-views of optical images, the hierarchical structure is implemented. According to the results for both models, the proposed algorithm produces high-quality 3D visualization images with the smallest mean squared error of about 7.2186 and 7.3999 μm2, respectively. Our results are compared with the statistical randomization-based particle swarm optimization (SR-PSO). The results show that the BCDL-GWO with ICP is better than those from the SR-PSO. However, the computational complexities of both methods are similar.

In recent years, the modeling and simulation of lithium-ion batteries have garnered attention due to the rising demand for reliable energy storage. Accurate charge cycle predictions are fundamental for optimizing battery performance and lifespan. This study compares particle swarm optimization (PSO) and grey wolf optimization (GWO) algorithms in modeling a commercial lithium-ion battery, emphasizing the voltage behavior and the current delivered to the battery. Bio-inspired optimization tunes parameters to reduce the root mean square error (RMSE) between simulated and experimental outputs. The model, implemented in MATLAB/Simulink, integrates electrochemical parameters and estimates battery behavior under varied conditions. The assessment of terminal voltage revealed notable enhancements in the model through both the PSO and GWO algorithms compared to the non-optimized model. The GWO-optimized model demonstrated superior performance, with a reduced RMSE of 0.1700 (25 °C; 3.6 C, 455 s) and 0.1705 (25 °C; 3.6 C, 10,654 s) compared to the PSO-optimized model, achieving a 42% average RMSE reduction. Battery current was identified as a key factor influencing the model analysis, with optimized models, particularly the GWO model, exhibiting enhanced predictive capabilities and slightly lower RMSE values than the PSO model. This offers practical implications for battery integration into energy systems. Analyzing the execution time with different population values for PSO and GWO provides insights into computational complexity. PSO exhibited greater-than-linear dynamics, suggesting a polynomial complexity of O(nk), while GWO implied a potential polynomial complexity within the range of O(nk) or O(2n) based on execution times from populations of 10 to 1000.

An optimal energy mix of various renewable energy sources and storage devices is critical for a profitable and reliable hybrid microgrid system. This work proposes a hybrid optimization method to assess the optimal energy mix of wind, photovoltaic, and battery for a hybrid system development. This study considers the hybridization of a Non-dominant Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA II) and the Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO). The objective function was formulated to simultaneously minimize the total energy cost and loss of power supply probability. A comparative study among the proposed hybrid optimization method, Non-dominant Sorting Genetic Algorithm II, and multi-objective Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) was performed to examine the efficiency of the proposed optimization method. The analysis shows that the applied hybrid optimization method performs better than other multi-objective optimization algorithms alone in terms of convergence speed, reaching global minima, lower mean (for minimization objective), and a higher standard deviation. The analysis also reveals that by relaxing the loss of power supply probability from 0% to 4.7%, an additional cost reduction of approximately 12.12% can be achieved. The proposed method can provide improved flexibility to the stakeholders to select the optimum combination of generation mix from the offered solutions.

Uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) is one of the most important parameters to characterize the rock mass in geotechnical engineering design and construction. In this study, a novel kernel extreme learning machine-grey wolf optimizer (KELM-GWO) model was proposed to predict the UCS of 271 rock samples. Four parameters namely the porosity (Pn, %), Schmidt hardness rebound number (SHR), P-wave velocity (Vp, km/s), and point load strength (PLS, MPa) were considered as the input variables, and the UCS is the output variable. To verify the effectiveness and accuracy of the KELM-GWO model, extreme learning machine (ELM), KELM, deep extreme learning machine (DELM) back-propagation neural network (BPNN), and one empirical model were established and compared with the KELM-GWO model to predict the UCS. The root mean square error (RMSE), determination coefficient (R2), mean absolute error (MAE), prediction accuracy (U1), prediction quality (U2), and variance accounted for (VAF) were adopted to evaluate all models in this study. The results demonstrate that the proposed KELM-GWO model was the best model for predicting UCS with the best performance indices. Additionally, the identified most important parameter for predicting UCS is the porosity by using the mean impact value (MIV) technique.

Electrochemical machining (ECM) is a preferred advanced machining process for machining Monel 400 alloys. During the machining, the toxic nickel hydroxides in the sludge are formed. Therefore, it becomes necessary to determine the optimum ECM process parameters that minimize the nickel presence (NP) emission in the sludge while maximizing the material removal rate (MRR). In this investigation, the predominant ECM process parameters, such as the applied voltage, flow rate, and electrolyte concentration, were controlled to study their effect on the performance measures (i.e., MRR and NP). A meta-heuristic algorithm, the grey wolf optimizer (GWO), was used for the multi-objective optimization of the process parameters for ECM, and its results were compared with the moth-flame optimization (MFO) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithms. It was observed from the surface, main, and interaction plots of this experimentation that all the process variables influenced the objectives significantly. The TOPSIS algorithm was employed to convert multiple objectives into a single objective used in meta-heuristic algorithms. In the convergence plot for the MRR model, the PSO algorithm converged very quickly in 10 iterations, while GWO and MFO took 14 and 64 iterations, respectively. In the case of the NP model, the PSO tool took only 6 iterations to converge, whereas MFO and GWO took 48 and 88 iterations, respectively. However, both MFO and GWO obtained the same solutions of EC = 132.014 g/L, V = 2406 V, and FR = 2.8455 L/min with the best conflicting performances (i.e., MRR = 0.242 g/min and NP = 57.7202 PPM). Hence, it is confirmed that these metaheuristic algorithms of MFO and GWO are more suitable for finding the optimum process parameters for machining Monel 400 alloys with ECM. This work explores a greater scope for the ECM process with better machining performance.

Crude oil market analysis has become one of the emerging financial markets and the volatility effect of the market is paramount and has been considered as an issue of utmost importance. This study examines the dynamics of this volatile market of crude oil by employing a hybrid approach based on an extreme learning machine (ELM) as a regressor and the improved grey wolf optimizer (IGWO) for prophesying the crude oil rate for West Texas Intermediate (WTI) and Brent crude oil datasets. The datasets are augmented using technical indicators (TIs) and statistical measures (SMs) to obtain better insight into the forecasting ability of this proposed model. The differential evolution (DE) strategy has been used for evolution and the survival of the fittest (SOF) principle has been used for elimination while implementing the GWO to achieve better convergence rate and accuracy. Whereas, the algorithmic simplicity, use of less parameters, and easy implementation of DE efficiently decide the evolutionary patterns of wolves in GWO and the SOF principle updates the wolf pack based on the fitness value of each wolf, thereby ensuring the algorithm does not fall into local optimum. Furthermore, the comparison and analysis of the proposed model with other models, such as ELM–DE, ELM–Particle Swarm Optimization (ELM–PSO), and ELM–GWO shows that the predictability evidence obtained substantially achieves better performance for ELM–IGWO with respect to faster error convergence rate and mean square error (MSE) during training and testing phases. The sensitivity study of the proposed ELM–IGWO provides better results in terms of the performance measures, such as Theil’s U, mean absolute error (MAE), average relative variance (ARV), mean average percentage error (MAPE), and minimal computational time.

Machinery condition monitoring and failure analysis is an engineering problem to pay attention to among all those being studied. Excessive vibration in a rotating system can damage the system and cannot be ignored. One option to prevent vibrations in a system is through preparation for them with a model. The accuracy of the model depends mainly on the type of model and the fitting that is attained. The non-linear model parameters can be complex to fit. Therefore, artificial intelligence is an option for performing this tuning. Within evolutionary computation, there are many optimization and tuning algorithms, the best known being genetic algorithms, but they contain many specific parameters. That is why algorithms such as the gray wolf optimizer (GWO) are alternatives for this tuning. There is a small number of mechanical applications in which the GWO algorithm has been implemented. Therefore, the GWO algorithm was used to fit non-linear regression models for vibration amplitude measurements in the radial direction in relation to the rotational frequency in a gas microturbine without considering temperature effects. RMSE and R2 were used as evaluation criteria. The results showed good agreement concerning the statistical analysis. The 2nd and 4th-order models, and the Gaussian and sinusoidal models, improved the fit. All models evaluated predicted the data with a high coefficient of determination (85–93%); the RMSE was between 0.19 and 0.22 for the worst proposed model. The proposed methodology can be used to optimize the estimated models with statistical tools.

As an effective carrier of renewable distributed power sources, such as wind power and photovoltaics, microgrids have attracted increasing attention as the energy crisis becomes more serious. This paper focuses on the symmetry between the dynamic optimal dispatch and the coordinated control of islanded microgrid to determine the optimal system configuration that can reliably meet energy needs. In order to solve energy management problems, operating costs and environmental benefits, a novel methodology that combines dynamic optimal dispatch and Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO) is developed in this study to obtain the best output of different system components. This is to minimize the total cost of microgrid power generation and reduce pollutant emissions. In addition, a comparison is carried out between GWO and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). Moreover, the comparison between system configurations in six different scenarios and the effectiveness of GWO in solving optimization problems are presented. Finally, the simulation results show that GWO is more effective than PSO in determining the optimization parameters and the utilization rate of renewable energy in different scenarios is up to 92.96%. The simulations and experimental results verify the successful performance of the research method proposed in this study.

The network intrusion detection system (NIDS) aims to identify virulent action in a network. It aims to do that through investigating the traffic network behavior. The approaches of data mining and machine learning (ML) are extensively used in the NIDS to discover anomalies. Regarding feature selection, it plays a significant role in improving the performance of NIDSs. That is because anomaly detection employs a great number of features that require much time. Therefore, the feature selection approach affects the time needed to investigate the traffic behavior and improve the accuracy level. The researcher of the present study aimed to propose a feature selection model for NIDSs. This model is based on the particle swarm optimization (PSO), grey wolf optimizer (GWO), firefly optimization (FFA) and genetic algorithm (GA). The proposed model aims at improving the performance of NIDSs. The proposed model deploys wrapper-based methods with the GA, PSO, GWO and FFA algorithms for selecting features using Anaconda Python Open Source, and deploys filtering-based methods for the mutual information (MI) of the GA, PSO, GWO and FFA algorithms that produced 13 sets of rules. The features derived from the proposed model are evaluated based on the support vector machine (SVM) and J48 ML classifiers and the UNSW-NB15 dataset. Based on the experiment, Rule 13 (R13) reduces the features into 30 features. Rule 12 (R12) reduces the features into 13 features. Rule 13 and Rule 12 offer the best results in terms of F-measure, accuracy and sensitivity. The genetic algorithm (GA) shows good results in terms of True Positive Rate (TPR) and False Negative Rate (FNR). As for Rules 11, 9 and 8, they show good results in terms of False Positive Rate (FPR), while PSO shows good results in terms of precision and True Negative Rate (TNR). It was found that the intrusion detection system with fewer features will increase accuracy. The proposed feature selection model for NIDS is rule-based pattern recognition to discover computer network attack which is in the scope of Symmetry journal.

The economic load dispatch (ELD) problem is a complex optimization problem in power systems. The main task for this optimization problem is to minimize the total fuel cost of generators while also meeting the conditional constraints of valve-point loading effects, prohibited operating zones, and nonsmooth cost functions. In this paper, a novel grey wolf optimization (GWO), abbreviated as NGWO, is proposed to solve the ELD problem by introducing an independent local search strategy and a noninferior solution neighborhood independent local search technique to the original GWO algorithm to achieve the best problem solution. A local search strategy is added to the standard GWO algorithm in the NGWO, which is called GWOI, to search the local neighborhood of the global optimal point in depth and to guarantee a better candidate. In addition, a noninferior solution neighborhood independent local search method is introduced into the GWOI algorithm to find a better solution in the noninferior solution neighborhood and ensure the high probability of jumping out of the local optimum. The feasibility of the proposed NGWO method is verified on five different power systems, and it is compared with other selected methods in terms of the solution quality, convergence rate, and robustness. The compared experimental results indicate that the proposed NGWO method can efficiently solve ELD problems with higher-quality solutions.

The potential of utilizing doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind farms to improve power system damping performance and to enhance small signal stability has been proposed by many researchers. However, the simultaneous coordinated tuning of a DFIG power oscillation damper (POD) with other damping controllers is rarely involved. A simultaneous robust coordinated multiple damping controller design strategy for a power system incorporating power system stabilizer (PSS), static var compensator (SVC) POD and DFIG POD is presented in this paper. This coordinated damping control design strategy is addressed as an eigenvalue-based optimization problem to increase the damping ratios of oscillation modes. Both local and inter-area electromechanical oscillation modes are intended in the optimization design process. Wide-area phasor measurement unit (PMU) signals, selected by the joint modal controllability/ observability index, are utilized as SVC and DFIG POD feedback modulation signals to suppress inter-area oscillation modes. The robustness of the proposed coordinated design strategy is achieved by simultaneously considering multiple power flow situations and operating conditions. The recently proposed Grey Wolf optimizer (GWO) algorithm is adopted to efficiently optimize the parameter values of multiple damping controllers. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed coordinated design strategy are demonstrated through frequency-domain eigenvalue analysis and nonlinear time-domain simulation studies in two modified benchmark test systems. Moreover, the dynamic response simulation results also validate the robustness of the recommended coordinated multiple damping controllers under various system operating conditions.
