Concrete columns with hollow-core sections find widespread application owing to their excellent structural efficiency and efficient material utilization. However, corrosion poses a challenge in concrete buildings with steel reinforcement. This paper explores the possibility of using glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) reinforcement as a non-corrosive and economically viable substitute for steel reinforcement in short square hollow concrete columns. Twelve hollow short columns were meticulously prepared in the laboratory experiments and subjected to pure axial compressive loads until failure. All columns featured a hollow square section with exterior dimensions of (180 × 180) mm and 900 mm height. The columns were categorized into four separate groups with different variables: steel and GFRP longitudinal reinforcement ratio, hollow ratio, spacing between ties, and reinforcement type. The experimental findings point to the compressive participation of longitudinal GFRP bars, estimated to be approximately 35% of the tensile strength of GFRP bars. Notably, increasing GFRP longitudinal reinforcement significantly improved the ultimate load capability of hollow square GFRP column specimens. Specifically, elevating the ratio of GFRP reinforcement from 1.46% to 2.9%, 3.29%, 4.9%, and 5.85% resulted in axial load capacity improvements of 32.3%, 43.9%, 60.5%, and 71.7%, respectively. Specifically, the GFRP specimens showed a decrease in capacity of 13.1%, 9.2%, and 9.4%, respectively. Notably, the load contribution of steel reinforcement to GFRP reinforcement (with similar sectional areas) was from approximately three to four times the axial peak load, highlighting the greater load participation of steel reinforcement due to its higher elastic modulus. In addition, the numerical modeling and analysis conducted using ABAQUS/CAE 2019 software exhibited strong concordance with experimental findings concerning failure modes and capacity to carry axial loads.

To promote the application of molybdenum tailings as the fine aggregate in concrete in construction engineering and verify the feasibility of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) material for strengthening molybdenum tailings concrete columns, this study takes a short circular molybdenum tailings concrete column reinforced by glass FRP (GFRP) as the research object. The influences of the molybdenum tailings content (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%), the concrete grade (C30, C40, and C50), and the layer number (0, 1, and 2) of the GFRP sheet on the axial compressive capacity of the molybdenum tailings concrete column are investigated. The experimental phenomena and failure modes of the unreinforced and GFRP-reinforced columns are analyzed. The axial compressive strengths of the unreinforced and GFRP-reinforced columns are then compared. The load–strain curve and load–displacement curve of typical molybdenum tailings concrete columns are presented. Subsequently, six classical strength models for FRP-reinforced concrete are used to calculate the axial compressive strength of the confined specimens. The results show that the best classical model has a predictive accuracy with an absolute relative deviation (ARD) of 8.5%. To provide a better prediction of the compressive strength of the GFRP-reinforced molybdenum tailings concrete column, the best classical model is further improved, and the ARD of the modified model is only 5.87%.

This paper aims to investigate the effect of glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) and carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) strengthening materials on the static and dynamic behavior of reinforced concrete (R/C) beams subjected to progressive damage. Four identical beams, each strengthened with either GFRP or CFRP, are tested under a cyclic quasi-static loading pattern. Impact hammer tests are performed for undamaged states and various damage levels of the beams. The dynamic test data are analyzed using the Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition (EFDD) method to estimate the dynamic characteristics of the beams. In this context, the first three vibration modes in both vertical and horizontal directions are considered. Strengthening is applied to both pre-damaged and undamaged beams, enabling a comparison of their performance before and after the strengthening procedure. Beams strengthened with CFRP exhibit a higher load-bearing capacity and stiffness but also fail at lower displacement levels compared to those strengthened with GFRP, which demonstrate more ductile behavior. Furthermore, the modal frequency ratios indicate that the first vibration mode is more sensitive to damage than the second and third modes. This study highlights the effectiveness of both strengthening materials in enhancing the structural performance of both undamaged and damaged beams.

This study aimed to investigate the nonlinear structural behavior of concrete deep beams internally reinforced with glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) reinforcing bars and containing a web opening of various sizes and locations within the shear span. Three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulation models were developed for large-scale GFRP-reinforced concrete deep beams (300 mm × 1200 mm × 5000 mm) with a shear span-to-depth ratio (a/h) of 1.04. Predictions of the numerical models were validated against published experimental data. A parametric study was conducted to examine the effect of varying the opening size and location on the shear response. Results of the numerical analysis indicated that the strength of the deep beam models with an opening in the middle of the shear span decreased with an increase in either the opening width or height. The rate of the strength reduction caused by increasing the opening height was, however, more significant than that produced by increasing the opening width. Placing a web opening in the compression zone close to the load plate was very detrimental to the beam strength. Conversely, a negligible strength reduction was recorded when the web opening was placed in the tension side above the flexural reinforcement and away from the natural load path. Data of the parametric study were utilized to introduce simplified analytical formulas capable of predicting the shear capacity of GFRP-reinforced concrete deep beams with a web opening in the shear span.

The detection of impact and depth defects in Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) composites has been extensively studied to develop effective, reliable, and cost-efficient assessment methods through various Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques. Challenges in detecting these defects arise from varying responses based on the geometrical shape, thickness, and defect types. Long Pulse Thermography (LPT), utilizing an uncooled microbolometer and a low-resolution infrared (IR) camera, presents a promising solution for detecting both depth and impact defects in GFRP materials with a single setup and minimal tools at an economical cost. Despite its potential, the application of LPT has been limited due to susceptibility to noise from environmental radiation and reflections, leading to blurry images. This study focuses on optimizing LPT parameters to achieve accurate defect detection. Specifically, we investigated 11 flat-bottom hole (FBH) depth defects and impact defects ranging from 8 J to 15 J in GFRP materials. The key parameters examined include the environmental temperature, background reflection, background color reflection, and surface emissivity. Additionally, we employed image processing techniques to classify composite defects and automatically highlight defective areas. The Tanimoto Criterion (TC) was used to evaluate the accuracy of LPT both for raw images and post-processed images. The results demonstrate that through parameter optimization, the depth defects in GFRP materials were successfully detected. The TC success rate reached 0.91 for detecting FBH depth defects in raw images, which improved significantly after post-processing using Canny edge detection and Hough circle detection algorithms. This study underscores the potential of optimized LPT as a cost-effective and reliable method for detecting defects in GFRP composites.

This paper presents a comprehensive study focused on evaluating the strain generated within short concrete columns reinforced with glass-fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars and spirals under concentric compressive axial loads. This research was motivated by the lack of sufficient data in the literature regarding strain in such columns. Five full-scale RC columns were cast and tested, comprising four strengthened with GFRP reinforcement and one reference column reinforced with steel bars and spirals. This study thoroughly examined the influence of various test parameters, such as the reinforcement type, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, and spacing of spiral reinforcement, on the strain in concrete, GFRP bars, and spirals. The experimental results showed that GFRP–RC columns exhibited similar strain behavior to steel–RC columns up to 85% of their peak loads. The study also highlighted that the bearing capacity of the columns increased by up to 25% with optimized reinforcement ratios and spiral spacing, while the failure mode transitioned from a ductile to a more brittle nature as the reinforcement ratio increased. Additionally, it is preferable to limit the compressive strain in GFRP bars to less than 20% of their ultimate tensile strain and the strain in GFRP spirals to less than 12% of their ultimate strain to ensure the safe and reliable use of these materials in RC columns. This research also considers the prediction of the axial load capacities using established design standards permitting the use of FRP bars in compressive members, namely ACI 440.11-22, CSA-S806-12, and JSCE-97, and underscores their limitations in accurately predicting GFRP–RC columns’ failure capacities. This study proposes an equation to enhance the prediction accuracy for GFRP–RC columns, considering the contributions of concrete, spiral confinement, and the axial stiffness of longitudinal GFRP bars. This equation addresses the shortcomings of existing design standards and provides a more accurate assessment of the axial load capacities for GFRP–RC columns. The proposed equation outperformed numerous other equations suggested by various researchers when employed to estimate the strength of 42 columns gathered from the literature.

In our investigation, we subjected eleven reinforced concrete beams to a four-point bending system to explore the impact of varying fibre and ferrocement contents on their structural behaviour. These beams, measuring 1.7 m in length, featured a rectangular cross-section with dimensions of 150 mm by 300 mm. Our study focused on three key variables: steel fibre content (at levels of 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5%), glass fibre content (also at 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5%), and ferrocement content (evaluated with one or two layers of welded or expanded wire mesh). Our findings revealed that incorporating fibres with minimal shear reinforcement significantly enhanced the beams’ performance. Specifically: The specimen reinforced with 1.5% steel fibres exhibited the highest ultimate failure load, surpassing the control beam by an impressive 41.87%. The 0.5% glass fibre specimen experienced the least deflection at the ultimate load compared to the control beam. The 1.5% glass fibre specimen demonstrated superior energy absorption compared to the control specimen. Notably, using two layers of welded wire mesh proved most effective in enhancing the ultimate failure load when compared to both the control specimen and other ferrocement-strengthened beams.

Hollow structures reduce weight without compromising load-bearing capacity and are widely used. The new Glass-Fiber-Reinforced Polymer high-strength thin-walled inner mold simplifies internal cavity construction and boosts structural performance. This study first investigates the influence of a GFRP high-strength thin-walled circular tube on the cross-sectional load-carrying capacity of hollow slabs. Then, a formula for the bending load-carrying capacity of the section under the action of the tube is derived. The results indicate that when the height of the concrete compression zone meets certain conditions, GFRP high-strength thin-walled circular tubes can improve the ultimate load-carrying capacity of the hollow floor slabs. In order to achieve a more economical design, the bending moment modification of a GFRP high-strength thin-walled circular tube of a continuous slab was studied. Research has found that the bending moment modulation limit for a continuous slab is 35.65% when it is subjected to a load of Pu=24 kN. Experimental analysis has shown that the results are generally consistent with the calculations. In practical engineering, the application of a GFRP high-strength thin-walled circular tube of continuous slabs has limitations. Therefore, this study investigated a GFRP high-strength thin-walled honeycomb core slab and found that its ultimate load-bearing capacity is greater compared to waffle slabs. In addition, the stress performance of the GFRP high-strength thin-walled honeycomb core internal mold is superior, making it more promising for practical applications.

This article explores the punching shear behavior of GFRP-RC interior slab–column connections. The parameters tested included the column–aspect ratio (1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0), perimeter-to-depth ratio for square column stubs with side lengths of 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, and 0.7 m, and span-to-depth ratios of 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12. A review of the literature revealed that no previous study has investigated the effect of these parameters or their interactions on this type of connection. Numerically, twenty-five slabs were created using finite element (FE) software (V3), each with square dimensions of 2.5 m and a constant thickness of 0.2 m. The central column extended 0.3 m from the top and bottom of the slab. All four sides of the slabs were supported, and the specimens underwent pure static shear load testing. The test results demonstrated that all slabs failed due to punching shear. Increasing any parameter value reduced the punching shear stresses. Additionally, the results indicated that Canadian (CSA-S806-12) and Japanese (JSCE-97) standards for FRP-RC materials generally provided the closest predictions of punching shear capacity compared to the American guideline, ACI 440.1R-22. However, all standards exhibited shortcomings and require enhancement and modifications, particularly to consider the impact of the span-to-depth ratio. Therefore, three equations were developed to predict the shear strength of the connections, yielding better results than those prescribed by the North American and Japanese standards.

This research aimed to generate data through a verified numerical model. The data were subsequently used to introduce a simplified analytical expression for the prediction of the shear strength of concrete deep beams reinforced with glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) reinforcing bars. A three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulation model for a large-scale GFRP-reinforced concrete deep beam (300 × 1200 × 5000 mm) was developed and validated against published experimental data. A parametric study was then conducted to examine the effects of key variables on the behavior and shear strength of GFRP-reinforced concrete deep beams. Eighteen 3D numerical models were developed to study the interaction between the concrete compressive strength (f’c), the shear span-to-depth ratio (a/h), the spacing between web reinforcement (s), and the shear strength. The a/h value was either 1.0 or 1.5. The values of f’c were 28, 37, and 50 MPa. The spacings between the web reinforcement, if present, were 100 and 200 mm. The results of the parametric study indicated that the shear strength of deep beam models increased almost linearly with an increase in f’c and a decrease in the stirrup spacing irrespective of the value of a/h. The strength reduction caused by increasing a/h was more pronounced for the beam models with the lower f’c and greater stirrup spacing. The simplified analytical expression introduced in the present study provided a reasonable prediction for the shear strength of GFRP-reinforced concrete deep beams.

This study experimentally investigates the bending creep behavior of a pultruded tube made of glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) and provides the corresponding fitting model as well as the life prediction equation. In the experiment process, the static bending test is performed first to determine the ultimate load-bearing capacities. Then, the creep experiments lasting 3000 h are conducted for GFRP pultruded tubes with 50%, 55%, 60%, and 65% fiber contents, subjected to four different load levels, i.e., 20%, 32.5%, 45%, 57.5%, and 70%, of the ultimate load-bearing capacity. The results indicate that the creep behavior exhibits linear viscoelasticity for load levels below 45%, while the specimens under load levels of 57.5% and 70% experienced creep failure before 1500 h. The test results indicate that for GFRP tubes, the higher the load level, the more pronounced the creep deformation, and specimens with a higher fiber content exhibit better creep resistance compared to those with lower fiber content. When the load level is less than 45%, the creep behavior appears as linear viscoelasticity. However, at a load level of 57.5%, the specimens experience shear failure, and at a load level of 70%, the specimens undergo overall bending failure. In addition, the prediction equation of creep deflection for GFRP pultruded tubes in linear viscoelasticity is developed by utilizing the Bailey–Norton model and the Findley model, and the prediction equation of creep life is acquired by fitting the experimental data with an exponential function.

Glass Fiber reinforced polymers (GFRPs) are widely used and play an important role in modern society. The multilayer structure of GFRPs can lead to delamination defects during production and service, which can have a significant impact on the integrity and safety of the equipment. Therefore, it is important to monitor these delamination defects during equipment service in order to evaluate their effects on equipment performance and lifespan. Microwave imaging testing, with its high sensitivity and noncontact nature, shows promise as a potential method for detecting delamination defects in GFRPs. However, there is currently limited research on the quantitative characterization of defect images in this field. In order to achieve visual quantitative nondestructive testing (NDT), we propose a 2D-imaging visualization and quantitative characterization method for delamination defects in GFRP, and realize the combination of visual detection and quantitative detection. We built a microwave testing experimental system to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results of the experiment indicate the effectiveness and innovation of the method, which can effectively detect all delamination defects of 0.5 mm thickness inside GFRP with high accuracy, the signal-to-background ratio (SBR) of 2D imaging can reach 4.41 dB, the quantitative error of position is within 0.5 mm, and the relative error of area is within 11%.

The study aims to conduct a direct pull-out test on fifty-four cube specimens considering different variables, including the type of reinforcement (sand-coated glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) and ribbed steel bars); the type of concrete (normal weight concrete NWC and lightweight foamed concrete LWFC); the diameter of the reinforcing bars (10 mm; 12 mm; and 16 mm) and the bonded length (3∅, 4∅, and 5∅). The hybrid fiber hooked-end steel (0.4% by volume) and polypropylene (0.2% by volume), respectively were used to improve the properties of LWFC by converting the brittle failure to ductile. The results showed that in the case of strengthened foamed concrete (FC), the bond strength with steel bars was greater compared to that with the GFRP bars. The bond strength ratio between the GFRP and steel bars of the FC specimens was found to vary between 37.8–89.3%. Additionally, in all specimens of FC, pull-out failure was witnessed with narrower crack width compared to NWC. Furthermore, mathematical equations have been proposed for predicting the bond strength of FC with steel and GFRP bars and showed good correlation with the experimental results.

The inverse Finite Element Method (iFEM) has recently gained much popularity within the Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) field since, given sparse strain measurements, it reconstructs the displacement field of any beam or shell structure independently of the external loading conditions and of the material properties. However, in principle, the iFEM requires a triaxial strain measurement for each inverse finite element, which is seldom feasible in practical applications due to both costs and cabling-related limitations. To alleviate this problem several techniques to pre-extrapolate the measured strains have been developed, so that interpolated or extrapolated strain values are inputted to elements without physical sensors: the benefit is that the required number of sensors can be reduced. Nevertheless, whenever the monitored components comprise regions of different thicknesses, each region of constant thickness must be extrapolated separately, due to thickness-induced discontinuities in the strain field. This is the case in many practical applications, especially those concerning fiber-reinforced composite laminates. This paper proposes to extrapolate the measured strain field in a thickness-normalized space, where the thickness-induced trends are removed; this novel method can significantly decrease the number of required sensors, effectively reducing the costs of iFEM-based SHM systems. The method is validated in a simple but informative numerical case study, highlighting the potentialities and benefits of the proposed approach for more complex application scenarios.

With the extensive application of glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) in the field of high voltage insulation, its operating environment is becoming more and more complex, and the surface insulation failure has gradually become a pivotal problem affecting the safety of equipment. In this paper, nano-SiO2 was fluorinated by Dielectric barrier discharges (DBD) plasma and doped with GFRP to enhance the insulation performance. Through Fourier Transform Ioncyclotron Resonance (FTIR) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) characterization of nano fillers before and after modification, it was found that plasma fluorination can graft a large number of fluorinated groups on the surface of SiO2. The introduction of fluorinated SiO2 (FSiO2) can significantly enhance the interfacial bonding strength of the fiber, matrix and filler in GFRP. The DC surface flashover voltage of modified GFRP was further tested. The results show that both SiO2 and FSiO2 can improve the flashover voltage of GFRP. When the concentration of FSiO2 is 3%, the flashover voltage increases most significantly to 14.71 kV, which is 38.77% higher than that of unmodified GFRP. The charge dissipation test results show that the addition of FSiO2 can inhibit the surface charge migration. By the calculation of Density functional theory (DFT) and charge trap, it is found that grafting fluorine-containing groups on SiO2 can increase its band gap and enhance its electron binding ability. Furthermore, a large number of deep trap levels are introduced into the nanointerface inside GFRP to enhance the inhibition of secondary electron collapse, thus increasing the flashover voltage.

Honeycomb structure composites are taking an increasing proportion in aircraft manufacturing because of their high strength-to-weight ratio, good fatigue resistance, and low manufacturing cost. However, the hollow structure is very prone to liquid ingress. Here, we report a fast and automatic classification approach for water, alcohol, and oil filled in glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) honeycomb structures through terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS). We propose an improved one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) model, and compared it with long short-term memory (LSTM) and ordinary 1D-CNN models, which are classification networks based on one dimension sequenced signals. The automated liquid classification results show that the LSTM model has the best performance for the time-domain signals, while the improved 1D-CNN model performed best for the frequency-domain signals.

An adhesive based on a Fe3O4-nanoparticle (MNP)-doped epoxy resin was proposed for the development of detachable adhesive joints with GFRP substrates. The analysis of cryofractures showed that the increasing MNP content promotes a higher presence of larger aggregates and a lower sedimentation of nanoparticles due to the higher viscosity of the mixture. In this regard, the inclusion of expandable microspheres (MS) induces a more uniform dispersion of MNPs, reducing their sedimentation. The capability of the proposed adhesives for electromagnetic (EM) heating was also evaluated, with increases in temperature of around 100 °C at 750 A, enough to reach the Tg of the polymer required to facilitate the adhesive detachment, which is around 80 °C. Finally, the lap shear strength (LSS) of 14 and 20 wt.% MNP samples was evaluated in a single-lap shear joint with simultaneous EM heating. The LSS values were reduced by 60–80% at 750 A, thus promoting successful adhesive joint detachment under EM heating.

The rehabilitation of steel structures with Fibre Reinforced Polymers (FRP’s) may appear less effective because they can be bolted or welded with steel plates that display the same mechanical properties. However, this technique has some unwanted consequences such as additional dead weight and an increased risk of corrosion. The aim of the proposed study, therefore, is to present a technique for modelling steel connections strengthened with FRP’s. Two types of composites: Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) and Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) are considered. They are used to strengthen welded steel connections. The main objective consists in evaluating the effect of the reinforcement on the load-carrying capacity of these connections under monotonic and cyclic loadings. The steel is considered to behave in a linear elastic perfectly plastic fashion with isotropic strain hardening, and the FRP’s are assumed to behave linearly up to failure. The behaviour of the adhesive is modelled with the Cohesive Zone Model (CZM) available in Abaqus. Lastly, a parametric study is carried out to investigate the eventuality of strengthening connections made with I-sections, which are very common in practice.

Reinforced concrete is the most commonly used material in the construction industry. However, one disadvantage of reinforced concrete is that environmental factors cause materials to penetrate the concrete and cause steel bar corrosion. Rebar corrosion increases its volume significantly by approximately 3–6 times, which lowers concrete–rebar adhesion. This severely affects the serviceability and durability of concrete structures. The economic and social impacts of such deterioration are extremely large. To reduce corrosion, glass fiber-reinforced plastics (GFRP) and carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRP) can be applied to concrete. The rebar–concrete bond strength is an important factor to be considered while applying GFRP and CFRP. Thus, we experimentally investigated the adhesion strength of GFRP and CFRP in relation to the strength of concrete and water–cement ratio according to ASTM C 234 to correlate the data for the development of GFRP and CFRP as substitutes for deformed reinforcing bars. The results showed that a lower water–cement ratio yielded higher compressive strength and bond strength; the bond strength of GFRP was approximately 23% lower than that of CFRP. The coating of the rebar surface required for GFRP and CFRP application in reinforced concrete structures ought to be investigated in the future.

Timber elements, such as timber bridges, are exposed to heavy loads. Therefore, reinforcement might be useful. Due to a lack of wood supplies, poplar, a fast-growing tree, could be used to construct CLT (cross-laminated timber). The low density of fast-growing wood species directly impacts the mechanical properties of CLT. Therefore, in this study, a CLT panel was reinforced with GFRP (glass-fiber-reinforced polymer), and the lateral resistance of double shear lap joints in reinforced CLTs with 0-90-0° arrangements in two strength directions was investigated. Lag screws (Ø = 8 mm) at the end distances of 1 and 3 cm were employed for making the lateral test specimens. First, the effect of the number of GFRP layers on lateral resistance of the joints was investigated. The results revealed that, as the number of GFRP layers changed from one to three, the lateral resistance increased by 45.47%, and then, by four layers, it decreased by 1.3%. Since the joints with three layers of FRP had the highest strength, the effects of the end distance and the CLT panel strength directions on the lateral performance of the reinforced and non-reinforced specimens were investigated. The results indicated that the lateral resistance of reinforced CLTs with GFRP was about 26.5% more than the unreinforced ones. Moreover, CLTs in the major strength direction showed 4.2% more lateral resistance than those in the minor strength direction. Moreover, lag screws at the end distance of 3 cm had 60% more lateral resistance than those at the end distance of 1 cm. In terms of failure modes, bearing, shear, and net-tension modes were observed in the CLTs, while Is, IIIs, and IV modes were observed in the lag screws.

Many structural elements are subjected to a significant torsional moment that affects the structural design and may require strengthening. This paper presents different effective strengthening techniques to enhance the torsional capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) beams. An experimental and numerical investigation was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of utilizing various strengthening systems. The experimental program included six full-scale RC beams with a cross-section dimension of (150 mm × 300 mm) and a length of 1500 mm, split into one beam without strengthening as a control beam, and six beams strengthened with various materials. The various strengthening materials were wrapped aluminum strips with anchorage bolts, wrapped stainless steel strips with anchorage bolts, wrapped glass fiber reinforcement polymer (GFRP), one layer of wrapped steel wire, and two layers of wrapped steel wire meshes along the beam. The results showed that the ultimate torque of the beam strengthened by wrapped aluminum strips and the beam strengthened by wrapped stainless steel strips was larger than the control beam by about 32% and 40%, respectively, because the strips acted as an external reinforcement. In addition to the strengthening systems, using aluminum strips and stainless steel strips is effective in raising the capacity to a similar degree despite the high cost of the stainless steel strips. The ultimate torque of the beams strengthened by GFRP, one-layered wrapped steel wire meshes, and two-layered wrapped steel wire meshes along the beam is larger than the control beam by about 62%, 118%, and 163%, respectively, in addition to the ultimate angle of twist, which was larger than the control beam by about 53%, 93%, and 126%, respectively. This showed that the strengthening using the two-layered wrapped steel wire meshes along the beam would be very significant in increasing the ultimate torque strength. Moreover, the strengthened beam by two-layered fully wrapped steel wire meshes along the beam developed the highest ductility factor compared to all strengthened beams; in contrast, the beam strengthened by GFRP had less ductility. To verify the outcomes of the experimental tests, a finite-element program, ABAQUS, was performed. Finally, an excellent agreement between the experimental and numerical results was obtained.

Two unique approaches were proposed to strengthen the bond between the glass fiber reinforcement polymer (GFRP) and the RC concrete surfaces. The two bonding materials are epoxy (EP) and geopolymer (GPP) with different ratios of short glass fibers (SGF). The experimental program includes seven reinforced concrete (RC) beams that have the same cross-section (150 mm × 200 mm) and are 1500 mm in length. The first beam is the control beam (B0-Control). The next three beams B1-0-GPP, B2-0.6-GPP, and B3-1.2-GPP have GPP with SGF ratios of 0%, 0.6%, and 1.2%, respectively. The last three beams B4-0-EP, B5-0.6-EP, and B6-1.2-EP have EP with SGF ratios of 0%, 0.6%, and 1.2%, respectively. The results show that the failure loads of beams B1-0-GPP, B2-0.60-GPP, and B3-1.2-GPP are greater than the control beam B0-Control by approximately 20.80%, 25.60%, and 31.40%, respectively, whereas the failure loads of beams B4-0-EP, B5-0.6-EP, and B6-1.2-EP are greater than the B0-Control by approximately 16.90%, 26.90%, and 26.10%, respectively; it is also noted that debonding occurs. In addition to the adhesive material, GPP has a great effect on increasing the beam’s failure load capacity due to the enhanced interfacial bond shear strength. Additionally, a finite-element program ABAQUS is performed to verify the experimental results.

GFRP sections with filler concrete material form promising structural components for structures; therefore, the structural performance of them has been investigated with increasing popularity. However, the performance of these composites degrades when fully composite action cannot be developed at the interface in where the literature hosts limited knowledge. Different techniques, such as abraded and sand-bonded surface treatments, were investigated experimentally to improve the bond-slip behavior between GFRP and concrete; however, there is a need to define shear mechanism at the interface of the numerical models. In this study, first, the average frictional bearing strengths were extracted for the treated and untreated inner surfaces using experimental results; then, the coulomb friction model was utilized to transfer the shear stresses between two dissimilar materials. Numerical models were verified by the experimental results, and different parametric studies were investigated by varying the amount and shape of GFRP in the cross section, compressive strength of concrete including the non-linear material behavior and interface frictional contact models. The findings showed that the interface strength can improve the flexural capacity of the concrete-filled GFRP beams by about 15.4%. Square GFRP box sections can be suggested for the construction of hybrid beams instead of rectangular sections, whereas the 10% areal ratio in a square cross section reached 103% load capacity improvement. The increased nominal compressive strength of concrete in hybrid beams can increase the hollow GFRP beams’ nominal load capacities and elastic stiffness of the hybrid beams in between; however, the relative gain is reduced due to increased compressive strength of concrete.

Epoxy nanocomposites reinforced with glass fiber, have been prepared with various weight percentages (1, 3, and 5 wt.%) of MgO nanofillers to improve their electrical and thermal performance. An increase in MgO nanofiller content up to 3 wt.% tends to enhance surface discharge and corona inception voltages measured using fluorescence and UHF methods, under both AC and DC voltage profiles. Reduced initial surface potential along with increased decay rate is observed after inclusion of MgO nanoparticles. Before and after the polarity reversal phenomena, heterocharge formation is observed in the bulk of test specimens. In comparison with other test samples, the 3 wt.% sample had reflected lower electric field enhancement factor. After MgO filler was added to glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites, the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) has reduced, with the 3 wt.% specimen having the lowest CTE value. TGA measurements revealed an improvement in thermal stability of the GFRP nanocomposites up on the inclusion of MgO nanofillers. Overall, the GFRP nanocomposite sample filled with 3 wt.% nano-MgO outperformed the other test samples in terms of electrical and thermal performance.

The application of laser fabrication of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) has an irreplaceable advantage. However, the effect of the plasma generated in laser fabrication on the damage process is rarely mentioned. In order to further study the law and mechanism of laser processing, the laser process was measured. CFRP and GFRP materials were damaged by a 1064 nm millisecond pulsed laser. Moreover, the propagation velocity and breakdown time of plasma plume were compared. The results show that GFRP is more vulnerable to breakdown than CFRP under the same conditions. In addition, the variation of plasma plume and material surface temperature with the number of pulses was also studied. The results show that the variation trend is correlated, that is, the singularities occur at the second pulse. Based on the analysis of experimental phenomena, this paper provides guidance for plasma phenomena in laser processing of composite materials.

Metals are known for high ductility and have, been used to design and fabricate structural components for many years. However, composite materials are taking over traditional materials owing to their significant mechanical properties. Fiber-reinforced composites exhibit lower ductility and failure strain, resulting in brittle failure, limiting their application where high ductility is desired. In this study, an effort has been made to design, fabricate, and test continuous fiber-reinforced composites with improved ductility. A comparative analysis was performed for optimizing the failure strain of different woven fiber-reinforced composite materials under both on-axis (0°/90°) and off-axis (±45°) loading. The materials include carbon/epoxy, E-glass/epoxy, and jute/epoxy composite. The tests were performed according to ASTM D3039 standard. The strength of all tested composites in on-axis and off-axis loading was obtained from tensile test results. But failure strain was limited in on-axis loading. Interestingly, glass/epoxy composite showed improved failure strain, by 90%, without much loss in tensile strength in off-axis loading than on-axis loading. The jute fiber revealed limited tensile strength and failure strain in both loading conditions.

This paper aims to estimate the enhancement in the energy absorption characteristics of the glass fiber reinforced composites (GFRP) by embedding prestrained pseudo-elastic shape memory alloy (SMA) that was used as a secondary reinforcement. The pseudo-elastic SMA (PE-SMA) embedded were in the form of wires and have an equiatomic composition (i.e., 50%–50%) of nickel (Ni) and titanium (Ti). These specimens are fabricated using a vacuum-assisted resin infusion process. The estimation is done for the GFRP and SMA/GFRP specimens at four different impact velocities (65, 75, 85, and 103 m/s) using a gas-gun impact set-up. At all different impact velocities, the failure modes change as we switch from GFRP to SMA/GFRP specimen. In the SMA/GFRP specimen, the failure mode changed from delamination in the primary region to SMA-pull out and SMA deformation. This leads to an increase in the ballistic limit. It is observed that energy absorbed by SMA/GFRP specimens is higher than the GFRP specimens subjected to the same levels of impact energy. To understand the damping capabilities of SMA embedment, vibration signals are captured, and the damping ratio is calculated. SMA dampens the vibrations imparted by the projectile to the specimen. The damping ratio of the SMA/GFRP specimens is higher than the GFRP specimens. The damping effect is more prominent below the ballistic limit when the projectile got rebounded (65 m/s).

Microalgae are an ideal source for next-generation biofuels due to their high photosynthetic rate. However, a key process limitation in microalgal biofuel production is harvesting of biomass and extraction of lipids in a cost-effective manner. The harvesting of the algal biomass amounts to approximately 20 to 30% of the total cost of the cultivation; hence, developing an efficient and universal harvesting method will make the commercialization of microalgal bio-cultures sustainable. In this study, we developed, demonstrated, and evaluated a novel harvesting method based on Glass Reinforced Fiber Polymer (GFRP) panels, suitable for industrial-scale installations. The proposed method was based on previous observations of preferential micro-algae development on glass surfaces, as well as in the assumption that the microalgae cells would prefer to attach to and grow on substrates with a similar size as them. At first, we developed a laser micromachining protocol for removing the resin and revealing the glass fibers of the GFRP, available for algal adhesion, thus acting as a microalgae biomass harvesting center. Surface micromachining was realized using a ns pulsed ultraviolet laser emitting at 355 nm. This laser ensured high machining quality of the GFRP, because of its selective material ablation, precise energy deposition, and narrow heat affected zone. A specially built open pond system was used for the cultivation of the microalgae species Scenedesmus rubescens, which was suitable for biofuel production. The cultivation was used for the experimental evaluation of the proposed harvesting method. The cultivation duration was set to 16 days in order for the culture to operate at the exponential growth phase. The biomass maximum recovery due to microalgae attachment on the GFRP surface was 13.54 g/m2, a yield comparable to other studies in the literature. Furthermore, the GFRP surfaces could be upscaled to industrial dimensions and positioned in any geometry dictated by the photobioreactor design. In this study, the glass fiber reinforced polymer used was suitable for the adhesion of Scenedesmus rubescens due to its fiber thickness. Other microalgae species could be cultivated, adhere, and harvested using GFRP of different fiber sizes and/or with a modified laser treatment. These very encouraging results validated GFRPs’ harvesting capabilities as an attachment substrate for microalgae. Additional studies with more algae species will further strengthen the method.

This paper deals with analyzing the structural responses of glass-fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) tubes filled with recycled and concrete material for developing composite piles, as an alternative to traditional steel reinforced piles in bridge foundations. The full-scale GFRP composite piles included three structural layers, using a fiber-oriented material that was inclined longitudinally. Almost 60% of the fibers were orientated at 35° from the longitudinal direction of the pile and the rest 40 percent were oriented at 86° from the horizontal axis. The segment between the inner and outer layers was inclined 3° from the hoop direction in the tube. The behavior of the filled GFRP tubes was semi-linear and resulted in increasing the total ductility and strength of the piles. Adjusting the material’s properties, such as the EAxial, EHoop, and Poisson ratios, optimized the results. The lateral strength of the GFRP composite pile and pre-stressed piles are investigated under both axial compression and bending moment loads. Based on the conducted parametric study, the required axial and bending capacities of piles in different ranges of eccentricities can be reached using the combination of tube wall thickness and GFRP fiber percentages.

Glass fiber reinforced polymers (GFRP) have become a preferable material for reinforcing or strengthening reinforced concrete structures due to their corrosion resistance, high strength to weight ratio, and relatively low cost compared with carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP). However, the limited fatigue life of GFRP hinders their use in infrastructure applications. For instance, the low fatigue life of GFRP caused design codes to impose stringent stress limits on GFRP that rendered their use non-economic under significant cyclic loads in bridges. In this paper, we demonstrate that the fatigue life of GFRP can be significantly improved by an order of magnitude by incorporating Multi-Wall Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs) during GFRP fabrication. GFRP coupons were fabricated and tested under static tension and cyclic tension with mean fatigue stress equal to 40% of the GFRP tensile strength. Microstructural investigations using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy were used for further investigation of the effect of MWCNTs on the GFRP composite. The experimental results show the 0.5 wt% and the 1.0 wt% MWCNTs were able to improve the fatigue life of GFRP by 1143% and 986%, respectively, compared with neat GFRP.

As manufacturing defects, voids in wind turbine blades may cause damage under fatigue loads. In this paper, the internal energy storage is used as an indicator to identify the critical moment when a defect evolves into damage. The heat transfer equation of composites material containing void defects is derived based upon the theory of the thermodynamics of irreversible processes. In order to obtain the numerical calculation model of the internal energy storage of the evolving process, the thermal conductivity along the transverse direction is homogenized as the temperature date along this direction is acquired by a thermal camera. Specimens with different void fractions are tested with infrared thermal imaging under fatigue load, during which the stress, strain and temperature data are acquired to establish the curve of internal energy storage against the fatigue cycle. This relationship curve can be used to identify the critical moment when void defects evolve into damage. The feasibility of this method is proven by microscopic observation.

Components and structures working in the marine environment are exposed to high stresses attributable to the action of wind, waves, and tides. Moreover, they have to face hostile and severe environmental conditions during their lifetime, being placed in the splash zone if not even submerged in saltwater. The application of polymer composites in marine systems has been the focus of intensive studies in the last decades, highlighting potential benefits given by the replacement of several components, such as ship hulls, propeller blades, wind, and tidal turbine blades, to cite but a few. The present paper reports the latest advances in this area, addressing the applications of advanced composites in ships and ship components, offshore oil and gas composites, marine renewable energy and underwater repairing.

Glass fiber reinforced polymers (GFRPs) are used extensively in many industries because of their low cost and high mechanical properties. Even if composite manufacturing processes are well controlled and allow to fabricate near net shapes, machining operations are still necessary to complete the manufacturing. As a composite material, GFRP machining remains difficult because of its heterogeneous and anisotropic character. This work intends to investigate the effect of graphene addition to the epoxy matrix of GFRP on its machinability. The epoxy was filled with 1 wt% graphene by mixing, sonicating, and then being used to produce unidirectional GFRP laminate by hand layup methods. Thermocouples were bonded on a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond coated tool in order to record cutting temperatures during the trimming process. The cutting forces were recorded and the resulting surface roughness after trimming was measured to qualify properly the machinability of the modified GFRP. Compared to the reference material (GFRP without graphene), the additive improved the machining process by decreasing the cutting temperature and forces as well as the surface roughness without deteriorating the inter-laminar shear strength.

Mechanical stresses of materials are generally coupled with temperature variations and then, monitoring such variations can help gaining information about the material behavior under the applied loads. This can be accomplished with an infrared imaging device, which can be advantageously exploited to sense the thermal radiation associated with mechanical stresses and to obtain a legible explicative temperature map. In the present paper, glass/epoxy is used as material case study to show that thermal signatures visualized during the load application can be decoded into knowledge, which can contribute to the material characterization. In particular, glass/epoxy specimens are subjected to three types of tests: cantilever beam alternate bending, quasi-static bending and low velocity impact. Thermal images are acquired in time sequence during each test and after post-processed and analyzed. It is possible to get data about the damage initiation and its evolution under either quasi-static bending, or impact. In particular, a cute analysis of thermal images supplies information about damage types (matrix cracks, or fibers breakage) and extension of delamination, as well of the impact duration and the time to reach peak contact force. It is also possible to well depict the harmonic cantilever beam oscillations through the associated small temperature variations.

Recycling glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite materials has been proven to be challenging due to their high mechanical performance and high resistance to harsh chemical and thermal conditions. This work discusses the efforts made in the past to mechanically process GFRP waste materials by cutting them into large-sized (cm scale) pieces, as opposed to pulverization, for use in concrete mixtures. These pieces can be classified into two main categories—coarse aggregate and discrete reinforcement, here referred to as “needles.” The results from all the studies show that using GFRP coarse aggregate leads to significant reductions in the compressive strength and tensile strength of concrete. However, GFRP needles lead to sizable increases in the energy absorption capacity of concrete. In addition, if the glass fibers are longitudinally aligned within the needles, these elements can substantially increase the tensile strength of concrete. Processing GFRP waste into needles requires less energy and time than that for producing GFRP coarse aggregate. Also, compared to pulverized GFRP waste, which consists of broken and separate particles of glass and resin that at best can be used as low-quality fillers, GFRP needles are high strength composite elements.

The very rapid growth in wind energy technology in the last 15 years has led to a rapid growth in the amount of non-biodegradable, thermosetting fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials used in wind turbine blades. This paper discusses conceptual architectural and structural options for recycling these blades by reusing parts of wind turbine blades in new or retrofitted housing projects. It focuses on large-sized FRP pieces that can be salvaged from the turbine blades and can potentially be useful in infrastructure projects where harsh environmental conditions (water and high humidity) exist. Since reuse design should be for specific regional locations and architectural characteristics the designs presented in this paper are for the coastal regions of the Yucatan province in Mexico on the Gulf of Mexico where low-quality masonry block informal housing is vulnerable to severe hurricanes and flooding. To demonstrate the concept a prototype 100 m long wind blade model developed by Sandia National Laboratories is used to show how a wind blade can be broken down into parts, thus making it possible to envision architectural applications for the different wind blade segments for housing applications.

Radomes protecting sensitive radar, navigational, and communications equipment of, e.g., aircraft, are strongly exposed to the environment and have to withstand harsh weather conditions and potential impacts. Besides their significance to the structural integrity of the radomes, it is often crucial to optimize the composite structures for best possible radio performance. Hence, there exists a significant interest in non-destructive testing techniques, which can be used for defect inspection of radomes in field use as well as for quality inspection during the manufacturing process. Contactless millimeter-wave and terahertz imaging techniques provide millimeter resolution and have the potential to address both application scenarios. We report on our development of a three-dimensional (3D) terahertz imaging system for radome inspection during industrial manufacturing processes. The system was designed for operation within a machining center for radome manufacturing. It simultaneously gathers terahertz depth information in adjacent frequency ranges, from 70 to 110 GHz and from 110 to 170 GHz by combining two frequency modulated continuous-wave terahertz sensing units into a single measurement device. Results from spiraliform image acquisition of a radome test sample demonstrate the successful integration of the measurement system.

This work proposes a novel hybrid signal processing technique to extract information on disbond-type defects from a single B-scan in the process of non-destructive testing (NDT) of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) material using ultrasonic guided waves (GW). The selected GFRP sample has been a segment of wind turbine blade, which possessed an aerodynamic shape. Two disbond type defects having diameters of 15 mm and 25 mm were artificially constructed on its trailing edge. The experiment has been performed using the low-frequency ultrasonic system developed at the Ultrasound Institute of Kaunas University of Technology and only one side of the sample was accessed. A special configuration of the transmitting and receiving transducers fixed on a movable panel with a separation distance of 50 mm was proposed for recording the ultrasonic guided wave signals at each one-millimeter step along the scanning distance up to 500 mm. Finally, the hybrid signal processing technique comprising the valuable features of the three most promising signal processing techniques: cross-correlation, wavelet transform, and Hilbert–Huang transform has been applied to the received signals for the extraction of defects information from a single B-scan image. The wavelet transform and cross-correlation techniques have been combined in order to extract the approximated size and location of the defects and measurements of time delays. Thereafter, Hilbert–Huang transform has been applied to the wavelet transformed signal to compare the variation of instantaneous frequencies and instantaneous amplitudes of the defect-free and defective signals.

Today, the concrete sector is being pushed to innovate in order to better address current challenges with higher competitiveness and more sustainable solutions. Different research studies have been conducted all over the world in which novel approaches and paths were proposed. It is important to spread information to define new strategies for the future of this industry. The enhancement of concrete properties and the impact of these changes in structural design are some of the topics analysed in those studies. This paper presents four experimental studies conducted by the authors where different types of concrete and structural members were tested. The common goal of these studies was to develop innovative solutions with high performance and low environmental impact. The scope of the first study was the structural behaviour of members produced with lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC). Results of several beams, ties, and slabs are herein presented and analysed. The advantage of using glass fibre–reinforced polymer (GFRP) rebars was addressed in a second study, and main results obtained with this type of rebar are also herein presented. Recent advances in nanotechnology led to the development of concretes incorporating nanoparticles into the binder matrix. Typically, these nanoparticles have a diameter of 10–300 nanometers and are added to the mixture to reduce the porosity and increase the density of the binder matrix, improving the mechanical properties and durability. To analyse their influence on steel-to-concrete bonding and on the shear and flexural behaviour of the beams was the main goal of the third study herein described. Finally, a new concept to produce reinforced concrete members with high durability using a special concrete cover, which was the goal of the fourth study, is also herein presented.
