Background/Objectives : Periprocedural blood pressure changes in stroke patients with a large vessel occlusion are a known modifiable risk factor of unfavorable treatment outcomes. We aimed to evaluate the association between pre-revascularization hypotension and the final infarct volume. Methods : In our retrospective analysis, we included 214 consecutive stroke patients with an anterior circulation large vessel occlusion that underwent mechanical thrombectomy under general anesthesia. Noninvasively obtained blood pressure values prior to symptomatic vessel recanalization were analyzed as a predictor of post-treatment infarct size. Linear logistic regression models adjusted for predefined factors were used to investigate the association between blood pressure parameters and the final infarct volume. Results : In our cohort, higher baseline systolic blood pressure (aβ = 8.32, 95% CI 0.93-15.7, p = 0.027), its maximal absolute drop (aβ = 6.98, 95% CI 0.42-13.55, p = 0.037), and >40% mean arterial pressure decrease (aβ = 41.77, CI 95% 1.93-81.61, p = 0.040) were independently associated with higher infarct volumes. Similarly, continuous hypotension measured as intraprocedural cumulative time spent below either 100 mmHg (aβ = 3.50 per 5 min, 95% CI 1.49-5.50, p = 0.001) or 90 mmHg mean arterial pressure (aβ = 2.91 per 5 min, 95% CI 0.74-5.10, p = 0.010) was independently associated with a larger ischemia size. In the subgroup analysis of 151 patients with an M1 middle cerebral artery occlusion, two additional factors were independently associated with a larger ischemia size: systolic blood pressure maximal relative drop and >40% drop from pretreatment value (aβ = 1.36 per 1% lower than baseline, 95% CI 0.04-2.67, p = 0.043, and aβ = 43.01, 95% CI 2.89-83.1, p = 0.036, respectively). No associations between hemodynamic parameters and post-treatment infarct size were observed in the cohort of intracranial internal carotid artery occlusion. Conclusions : In patients with ischemic stroke due to a proximal middle cerebral artery occlusion, higher pre-thrombectomy treatment systolic blood pressure is associated with a larger final infarct size. In patients treated under general anesthesia, hypotension prior to the M1 portion of middle cerebral artery recanalization is independently correlated with the post-treatment infarct volume. In this group, every 5 min spent below the mean arterial pressure threshold of 100 mmHg is associated with a 4 mL increase in ischemia volume on a post-treatment NCCT. No associations between blood pressure and final infarct volume were present in the subgroup of patients with an intracranial internal carotid artery occlusion.

Background: The anatomical characteristics of the anterior ethmoidal artery (AEA) exhibit a high degree of variability, especially regarding its topography. Methods: PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar were searched to identify all studies that included information regarding the morphometric and topographical characteristics of the AEA. Results: Ultimately, a compilation of 38 studies meeting the predetermined criteria, and possessing comprehensive and pertinent data, were incorporated into the current meta-analysis. In the overall analysis, reports of the AEA being embedded within the skull base or at the level of the skull base producing a bony protrusion were found in 56.91% of cases (95% CI: 43.55-69.80%). The mean diameters of the AEA in the intraorbital and intracranial areas were 0.94 mm and 0.76 mm, respectively. Moreover, the artery coursed most commonly between the second and third lamellae, with a prevalence of 65.82% (95% CI: 55.39-75.56%). Conclusions: The AEA may be at a high risk of iatrogenic injury during various sinus and skull base surgeries, especially if the surgeon performing these procedures is unfamiliar with the vast number of variations this vessel may exhibit. The spatial relationship between this vessel and the skull base is especially variable, and understanding this variability goes hand in hand with intraoperative safety.

Viral infections can be a serious complication of therapy in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). In this study, we focused on the incidence and the profile of viral infection in children with ALL treated in 17 pediatric oncology centers in Poland in the two-year periods of 2018-2019 and 2020-2021. We also compared the frequency of viral infections in 2018-2019 to that in 2020-2021. In 2020-2021, a total of 192 children with ALL had a viral infection during intensive chemotherapy. A total number of 312 episodes of viral infections were diagnosed. The most common infections detected in the samples were: COVID-19 (23%), rhinovirus (18%), and respiratory syncytial virus (14%). COVID-19 and BK virus infections were the reason for the death 1% of all patients. In 2018-2019, a total of 53 ALL patients who had a viral infection were reported and 72 viral events were observed, mainly adenovirus (48.6%), rotavirus (31.9%), and herpes zoster (8.3%). No deaths were reported during this period. The cumulative incidence of viral infections in 2018-2019 was 10.4%, while for 2020-2021, it was 36.7%. In conclusion, a high incidence of COVID-19 infection was observed among pediatric patients with ALL in Poland. The mortality rate in our material was low. The viral profile in ALL children undergoing chemotherapy can be useful for clinicians to improve prophylactic and therapeutic strategies.

Arctium lappa is a weed used in traditional medicine in the treatment of skin inflammation and digestive tract diseases. Arctium tomentosum is used in folk medicine interchangeably with Arctium lappa and, according to European Medicines Agency (EMA) monography, provides an equal source of Arctii radix ( Bardanae radix ), despite the small amount of research confirming its activity and chemical composition. The aim of the study was the comparison of the anti-lipoxygenase and the antioxidant activity, scavenging of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), superoxide anion (O 2 •- ), and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), of 70 % ( v/v ) ethanolic extracts from the aerial parts and the roots of Arctium lappa and Arctium tomentosum . In the tested extracts, the total polyphenols content and the chemical composition, analyzed with the HPLC-DAD-MS n method, were also compared. The extracts were characterized by strong antioxidant properties, but their ability to inhibit lipoxygenase activity was rather weak. A correlation between the content of polyphenolic compounds and antioxidant activity was observed. The extracts from A. lappa plant materials scavenged reactive oxygen species more strongly than the extracts from A. tomentosum plant materials. Moreover, the extracts from A. lappa plant materials were characterized by the statistically significantly higher content of polyphenolic compounds.

The aim of the study is to characterise biologically active hydolysates and peptide fractions obtained from vacuum-packed string beans ( Phaseolus vulragis L.) (PB). Unpacked beans were a control sample. The influence on human squamous carcinoma cell line SCC-15 (ATCC CRL-1623) was determined. Packed bean (PB) and unpacked bean (UB) extracts were found to exert no effect on the tongue squamous carcinoma cells. The results of the study indicated that the packing process contributed to the retention of protein, soluble dietary fibre, and free sugar (2.36, 3.5, and 1.79 g/100 d.m., respectively). PB was characterised by higher antioxidant activity (expressed as neutralisation of 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS ABTS • + ) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH · ) free radicals) as well as Fe 2+ chelation and reducing power (IC 50 = 54.56, 0.46, 3.85 mg mL - 1 ; 0.088 A 700/peptide content , respectively) than the UB samples before hydrolysis. The hydrolysis process enhanced these properties. The IC 50 value of lipase and α-amylase inhibitory activity of the hydrolysates obtained from UB was reduced. The PB and UB fractions exhibited a certain level of antimicrobial activity against S. aureus and E. coli .
