Lard is highly appreciated for its flavor. However, it has not been elucidated how to consume lard while at the same time eliminating its adverse effects on postpartum cognitive function. Female mice were divided into three groups (n = 10): soybean oil (SO), lard oil (LO), and a mixture of soybean oil and lard at a ratio of 1:1 (LS). No significant difference was observed between the SO and LS groups in behavioral testing of the maternal mice, but the LO group was significantly worse compared with these two groups. Moreover, the SO and LS supplementation increased docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and total n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) levels in the brain and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA)-producing bacteria in feces, thereby mitigating neuroinflammation and lowering the p-ERK(1/2)/ERK(1/2), p-CREB/CREB, and BDNF levels in the brain compared to the LO group. Collectively, the LS group inhibited postpartum cognitive impairment by regulating the brain fatty acid composition, neuroinflammation, gut microbiota, and the SCFA/ERK(1/2)/CREB/BDNF signaling pathway compared to lard.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is a major causative pathogen of a highly contagious, acute enteric viral disease. This study evaluated the emergence of nine variants in Jiangsu and Anhui provinces of China from 2020 to 2023. S gene-based phylogenetic analysis indicated that three variants belong to the G1c subgroup, while the other six strains are clustered within the G2c subgroup. Recombination analyses supported that three variants of the G1c subgroup were likely derived from recombination of parental variants FR0012014 and a donor variant AJ1102. In addition, there are novel mutations on amino acid 141–148 and these likely resulted in changes in antigenicity in the three variants. These results illustrated that the study provides novel insights into the epidemiology, evolution, and transmission of PEDV in China.

Since tool wear accumulates in the cutting process, the condition of the cutting tool shows a degradation trend, which ultimately affects the surface quality. Tool wear monitoring and prediction are of significant importance in intelligent manufacturing. The cutting signal shows short-term randomness due to non-uniform materials in the workpiece, making it difficult to accurately monitor tool condition by relying on instantaneous signals. To reduce the impact of transient fluctuations, this paper proposes a novel network based on deep learning to monitor and predict tool wear. Firstly, a CNN model based on residual connection was designed to extract deep features from multi-sensor signals. After that, a temporal model based on an encoder and decoder was built for short-term monitoring and long-term prediction. It captured the instantaneous features and long-term trend features by mining the temporal dependence of the signals. In addition, an encoder and decoder-based temporal model is proposed for smoothing correction to improve the estimation accuracy of the temporal model. To validate the performance of the proposed model, the PHM dataset was used for wear monitoring and prediction and compared with other deep learning models. In addition, CFRP milling experiments were conducted to verify the stability and generalization of the model under different machining conditions. The experimental results show that the model outperformed other deep learning models in terms of MAE, MAPE, and RMSE.

The present study aimed to investigate the differential effects of n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on placental and embryonic development. Pregnant mice were assigned to five groups: healthy control (HC), diabetes mellitus control (DMC), diabetes + low-dose n-3 PUFA (Ln-3), diabetes + high-dose n-3 PUFA (Hn-3), and diabetes + n-6 PUFA (n-6). On E12.5d, the Hn-3 group, but not the n-6 group, had a higher placenta weight. The weight ratio of embryo to placenta in the n-6 group was significantly lower than in the Hn-3 group but higher than in the DMC group. The Hn-3 group had significantly higher protein levels of VEGF, IGF-1, and IGFBP3, while the n-6 group had lower VEGF than the DMC group. Compared with the DMC group, embryonic Cer-16:0 was significantly higher in the Hn-3 group, while embryonic PC (36:6), PC (38:7), and PE (40:7) were significantly lower in the n-6 group. The embryo and placenta weights were positively correlated with placental VEGF, IGFBP3, and embryonic Cer-16:0, and they were negatively correlated with embryonic PC (36:6) and PE (40:7). The weight ratio of embryo to placenta was negatively correlated with embryonic PC (36:6). In addition, embryonic Cer-16:0 was positively correlated with placental VEGF and IGFBP3. In conclusion, n-3 PUFA and n-6 PUFA improved placental and embryonic growth through different mechanisms.

Sperm cryopreservation is a valuable tool for breeding, conservation, and genetic improvement in aquatic resources, while oxidative damage will cause a decline in sperm quality during this progress. Melatonin (MT), a natural antioxidant hormone, is used as an additive in sperm cryopreservation to reduce cellular damage from oxidative stress. Here, we aimed to investigate the effect of adding MT to the freezing medium in sperm cryopreservation of brown-marbled grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus). Different concentrations of MT (0, 0.1, 0.25, and 0.5 mg/mL) were tested. We evaluated sperm motility, viability, apoptosis, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), and fertilization ability to assess the effects of MT supplementation. Our results demonstrated that the addition of MT to the extender improved the post-thaw motility, MMP, and fertilization ability of brown-marbled grouper sperm. The total motility, curvilinear velocity, straight linear velocity, and average path velocity in MT-treated groups (0.1 and 0.25 mg/mL) exhibited significantly higher values than that of the control group. A higher MMP (p < 0.05) was observed in the group treated with 0.25 mg/mL MT, suggesting that supplementation of MT in the extender might be able to protect mitochondrial membrane integrity effectively. Regarding fertilizing ability, 0.25 mg/mL MT yielded a significantly higher hatching rate than the control. An adverse effect was found with the concentration of MT up to 0.5 mg/mL, suggesting the possible toxicity of a high-dose addition. In this study, we optimized the sperm cryopreservation protocol of brown-marbled grouper, which might be valuable for sperm cryopreservation and sample commercialization of groupers and other fish.

Zr-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) have many unique properties. Due to their excellent performance and manufacturing process, they have become a research focus in the material science community. Electrolyte Jet Machining (EJM) is a non-contact electrochemical processing method with high surface integrity and high material removal rate (MRR). In this research, the sub-millimeter channels fabricated by EJM on Zr-based BMGs have been studied to explore the dissolution mechanisms and surface integrity under different scanning rates and voltages. The results show that, with other machining parameters holding constant, an increase in voltage leads to a substantial enhancement in both the depth and width of the channels machined on Zr-based BMGs. Notably, the influence of voltage on the depth of the channels is particularly pronounced. Additionally, an escalation in scanning rate correlates with a decrease in channel depth, with minimal variation in channel width. This study indicates that alcohol-based EJM is an effective method to fabricate sub-millimeter channels and modulate structures on Zr-based BMGs.

Enteromorpha prolifera (EP) is a green alga that causes green bloom worldwide. This study aimed to isolate and identify n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) from EP oil obtained via supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and to explore its preventive effects against dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis in C57BL/6J mice. In EP oil, we found the novel n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid C16:4n-3 and two unusual fatty acids C18:4n-3 and C16:3n-3, using GC-MS. The administration of EP oil reduced histopathological of symptoms colitis and the shortening of the colon length. Pro-inflammatory cytokines of IL-6 and TNF-α in serum of EP oil treatment were lower than DSS treatment (by 37.63% and 83.52%), and IL-6 gene expression in the colon was lower in than DSS group by 48.28%, and IL-10 in serum was higher than DSS group by 2.88-fold. Furthermore, the protein expression of p-STAT3 by the EP oil treatment was significantly reduced compared with DSS treatment group by 73.61%. Lipidomics study suggested that phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine were positively associated with the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10, while cholesteryl ester and sphingomyelin were negatively related to inflammation cytokines in the EP oil group. The present results indicated that EP oil rich in n-3 PUFA contains a novel fatty acid C16:4n-3, as well as two uncommon fatty acids C18:4n-3 and C16:3n-3. EP oil could prevent DSS-induced ulcerative colitis by regulating the JAK/STAT pathway and lipid metabolism.

Zr-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) possess unique mechanical and biochemical properties, which have been widely noticed. Jet electrochemical machining (jet-ECM), characterized by a high-speed jet, is a non-contact subtractive method with a high resolution and a high material removal rate (MRR). Past work on the electropolishing of Zr-based BMGs has indicated the feasibility of the NaCl-Ethylene Glycol (EG) electrolyte. In this research, the jet-ECM of Zr-based BMGs in the NaCl-EG electrolyte was studied to explore the dissolving mechanisms and surface integrity according to the voltage, pulse-on time and effective voltage time. The diameter, depth and surface morphologies of dimples were evaluated. The results showed that using this alcohol-based electrolyte led to a desirable surface morphology. The diameter and depth of the dimples varied with the voltage and the effective voltage time in a significantly positive proportional manner. Additionally, cases based on multiple parameter sets exhibited different stray corrosion severity. Afterward, machining performance can be enhanced in the next stage by tuning machining parameters to obtain microscale dimples with better quality.

Crush syndrome (CS), also known as traumatic rhabdomyolysis, is a syndrome with a wide clinical spectrum; it is caused by external compression, which often occurs in earthquakes, wars, and traffic accidents, especially in large-scale disasters. Crush syndrome is the second leading cause of death after direct trauma in earthquakes. A series of clinical complications caused by crush syndrome, including hyperkalemia, myoglobinuria, and, in particular, acute kidney injury (AKI), is the main cause of death in crush syndrome. The early diagnosis of crush syndrome, the correct evaluation of its severity, and accurate predictions of a poor prognosis can provide personalized suggestions for rescuers to carry out early treatments and reduce mortality. This review summarizes various methods for the diagnostic and predictive evaluation of crush syndrome, including urine dipstick tests for a large number of victims, traditional and emerging biomarkers, imaging-assisted diagnostic methods, and developed evaluation models, with the aim of providing materials for scholars in this research field.

Our previous study found that the intravesical perfusion of metformin has excellent inhibitory effects against bladder cancer (BC). However, this administration route allows the drug to be diluted and excreted in urine. Therefore, increasing the adhesion of metformin to the bladder mucosal layer may prolong the retention time and increase the pharmacological activity. It is well known that chitosan (Cs) has a strong adhesion to the bladder mucosal layer. Thus, this study established a novel formulation of metformin to enhance its antitumor activity by extending its retention time. In this research, we prepared Cs freeze-dried powder and investigated the effect of metformin-loaded chitosan hydrogels (MLCH) in vitro and in vivo. The results showed that MLCH had a strong inhibitory effect against proliferation and colony formation in vitro. The reduction in BC weight and the expression of tumor biomarkers in orthotopic mice showed the robust antitumor activity of MLCH via intravesical administration in vivo. The non-toxic profile of MLCH was observed as well, using histological examinations. Mechanistically, MLCH showed stronger functional activation of the AMPKα/mTOR signaling pathway compared with metformin alone. These findings aim to make this novel formulation an efficient candidate for managing BC via intravesical administration.

The eXTP (enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarization) satellite is a prominent X-ray astronomy satellite designed primarily for conducting deep space X-ray astronomical observations. The satellite’s scientific payload consists of X-ray focusing mirrors. In order to fulfill the requirements of weight reduction and enhanced effective area, the thickness of mirrors is reduced to the sub-millimeter range and a multi-layer nested structure is employed. Manufacturing mirrors poses a significant challenge to both their quality and efficiency. The present research investigates the optimal replication process for mandrel ultraprecision machining, polishing, coating, electroforming nickel, and demolding. It analyzes the factors contributing to the challenging separation and the inability to release the mirror shells. Additionally, an automatic demolding device is developed, and the X-ray performance of the replication mirrors is verified. The fabrication process flow of the mirrors was initially introduced. To ensure the easy release of the mirror shells from the mandrels, a layer of diamond-like carbon (DLC) was applied as a release layer between the Au and NiP alloy. The adhesion strength of Au-C was found to be significantly lower than that of Au-NiP, as demonstrated by both molecular dynamic simulation and tensile testing. The development of an automatic demolding device with force feedback has been successfully completed. The reduction in the half-power diameter (HPD) of the mirror from 48 inches to 25 inches is an improvement that surpasses the production target.

Acute hypoxia is a common abiotic stress in commercial aquaculture and has significant effects on fish physiology and metabolism. Due to its large size and rapid growth, the greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili) is an economically important fish with high farming value. This species is intolerant to hypoxia, which makes it susceptible to mass mortality and hinders the progress of amberjack cultivation. Based on a comparative analysis of the liver transcriptome between acute hypoxia-tolerant (HT) and -intolerant (HS) groups, this study first explored the molecular mechanisms of acute hypoxia in greater amberjack. By simulating the acute hypoxic environment and using RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq), the differences in liver transcriptional changes between the acute hypoxia-tolerant (HT) and hypoxia-intolerant (HS) groups of greater amberjack were probed. Based on differential expression analysis, 829 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were screened in both groups. Relative to the HS group, 374 DEGs were upregulated and 455 were downregulated in the HT group. Compared with the HS group, genes such as slc2a5 and prkaa2 related to promoting sugar transport and inhibiting lipid syntheses were upregulated, while genes that inhibit gluconeogenesis and promote lipid syntheses, such as pgp and aacs, were downregulated. The expression of odc1 was significantly and relatively downregulated in the HT group, which would lead to the inhibition of intracellular antioxidant activity and decreased scavenging of ROS. The NF-kB pathway was also promoted to some extent in individuals in the HT group relative to the HS group to resist apoptosis. In addition, the relative downregulation of apoptosis and autophagy-related genes, such as endog, hm13, and casp6, was also detected in the HT group. The present findings first reported the regulation mechanism by which liver tissue coped with the acute hypoxia stress in greater amberjack, which will provide important technical support for preventing acute hypoxia-induced death in advance and reducing economic losses.

For multi-modular nuclear power plants under the scheme of multiple nuclear steam supply system (NSSS) modules driving a single steam turbine, the NSSS modules are coupled tightly with each other by the common turbine, giving more complex normal operation with respect to the single-modular plants. To limit the operation cost of multi-modular plants, one operator is assigned to monitor and control two or more modules, whose feasibility should be verified. Combined with the characteristics of multi-module control rooms and multi-module running tasks, this paper designs a comprehensive situation awareness measurement method that combines SART, NASA-TLX (NASA Task Load Index), and eye movement tracking methods. The SART, NASA-TLX, and gaze entropy are adopted to measure the operators’ SA, and a series of accident handling experiments are performed on a full-scale simulator to gain enough data for analysis. The operators’ eye trajectories on the human–machine interface (HMI) during the experiments are all recorded for calculating the gaze entropy. Both the SART and NASA-TLX scales are filled by the operators after finishing the experiments. The experiment results show that the difference in operators’ workload and SA amongst all the experimental scenarios is limited, even between the toughest and tenderest scenarios, indicating the feasibility of one operator driving two NSSS modules simultaneously.

Humans have consumed lard for thousands of years, but in recent decades, it has become much less popular because it is regarded as saturated fat. Animal studies showed that lard plus soybean oil (blend oil) was more advantageous for liver health than using either oil alone. This study aims to assess the effects of blend oil on liver function markers in healthy subjects. The 345 healthy subjects were randomized into 3 isoenergetic diet groups with different edible oils (30 g/day) (soybean oil, lard, and blend oil (50% lard and 50% soybean oil)) for 12 weeks. The reductions in both aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) were greater in the blend oil group than in the two other groups (p = 0.001 and p < 0.001) or lard group (p < 0.001). There were no significant differences in the other liver function markers between the groups. Thus, blend oil was beneficial for liver function markers such as AST and ALT compared with soybean oil and lard alone, which might help prevent non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in the healthy population.

In recent years, segmentation details and computing efficiency have become more important in medical image segmentation for clinical applications. In deep learning, UNet based on a convolutional neural network is one of the most commonly used models. UNet 3+ was designed as a modified UNet by adopting the architecture of full-scale skip connections. However, full-scale feature fusion can result in excessively redundant computations. This study aimed to reduce the network parameters of UNet 3+ while further improving the feature extraction capability. First, to eliminate redundancy and improve computational efficiency, we prune the full-scale skip connections of UNet 3+. In addition, we use the attention module called Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) to capture more essential features and thus improve the feature expression capabilities. The performance of the proposed model was validated by three different types of datasets: skin cancer segmentation, breast cancer segmentation, and lung segmentation. The parameters are reduced by about 36% and 18% compared to UNet and UNet 3+, respectively. The results show that the proposed method not only outperformed the comparison models in a variety of evaluation metrics but also achieved more accurate segmentation results. The proposed models have lower network parameters that enhance feature extraction and improve segmentation performance efficiently. Furthermore, the models have great potential for application in medical imaging computer-aided diagnosis.

The sowing date and density are considered to be the main factors affecting crop yield. The determination of the sowing date and sowing density, however, is fraught with uncertainty due to the influence of climatic conditions, topography, variety and other factors. Therefore, it is necessary to find a comprehensive consideration of these factors to guide the production of winter rapeseed. A reliable crop model could be a crucial tool to investigate the response of rapeseed growth to changes in the sowing date and density. At present, few studies related to rapeseed model simulation have been reported, especially in the comprehensive evaluation of the effects of sowing date and density factors on rapeseed development and production. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of the AquaCrop model for winter rapeseed development and yield simulation under various sowing dates and densities, and to optimize the sowing date and density for agricultural high-efficient production in the Jianghuai Plain. Two years of experiments were carried out in the rapeseed growing season in 2020 and 2021. The model parameters were fully calibrated and the simulation performances in different treatments of sowing dates and densities were evaluated. The results indicated that the capability of the AquaCrop model to interpret crop development for different sowing dates was superior to that of sowing densities. For rapeseed canopy development, the RMSE for three sowing dates and densities scenarios were 7–22% and 16–23%, respectively. The simulated biomass and grain yield for different sowing dates treatments (RMSE: 0.8–2.1 t·ha−1, Pe: 0–35.3%) were generally better than those of different densities treatments (RMSE: 0.7–3.9 t·ha−1, Pe: 8.2–90%). Compared with other sowing densities, higher overestimation errors of the biomass and yield were observed for the low-density treatment. Adequate agreement for crop evapotranspiration simulation was achieved, with an R2 of 0.79 and RMSE of 26 mm. Combining the simulation results and field data, the optimal sowing scheme for achieving a steadily high yield in the Jianghuai Plain of east China was determined to be sowing in October and a sowing density of 25.0–37.5 plant·m−2. The study demonstrates the great potential of the AquaCrop model to optimize rapeseed sowing patterns and provides a technical means guidance for the formulation of local winter rapeseed production.

Backgrounds: Concomitant abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) and gastrointestinal malignancies are uncommon. Endovascular repair (EVAR) is widely used to treat AAA. However, no consensus exists on the optimal strategy for treating AAA when associated with pancreatic adenocarcinoma. In addition, only few reports of pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) after EVAR exist. Presentation of case: A pancreatic tumor was detected during follow-up after EVAR for AAA in an 83-year-old female patient. The diagnosis was high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia. Modified pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy was safely performed. The patient recovered moderately and was discharged two weeks after surgery. The pathological diagnosis was middle-grade pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. The patient survived for 24 months with no recurrence or cardiovascular complications. Conclusions: Conducting periodic follow-ups after AAA surgery is helpful for the early discovery of gastrointestinal tumors. EVAR surgery is safe and feasible and thus recommended for AAA patients with pancreatic cancer, although it may increase the risk of cancer. The stage of malignancy and post-EVAR medical history can be valuable in evaluating the benefits of pancreatic surgery for such cases.

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is a major constituent of neural and visual membranes and is required for optimal neural and visual function. DHA is derived from food or by endogenous synthesis from α-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential fatty acid. Low blood levels of DHA in some westernised populations have led to speculations that child development disorders and various neurological conditions are associated with sub-optimal neural DHA levels, a proposition which has been supported by the supplement industry. This review searched for evidence of deficiency of DHA in human populations, based on elevated levels of the biochemical marker of n-3 deficiency, docosapentaenoic acid (22:5n-6). Three scenarios/situations were identified for the insufficient supply of DHA, namely in the brain of new-born infants fed with high-linoleic acid (LA), low-ALA formulas, in cord blood of women at birth who were vegetarians and in the milk of women from North Sudan. Twenty post-mortem brain studies from the developed world from adults with various neurological disorders revealed no evidence of raised levels of 22:5n-6, even in the samples with reduced DHA levels compared with control subjects. Human populations most likely at risk of n-3 deficiency are new-born and weanling infants, children and adolescents in areas of dryland agriculture, in famines, or are refugees, however, these populations have rarely been studied. This is an important topic for future research.

A light gas gun was used to study the radiation temperature from the window material of sapphire. The luminescence characteristics were determined using a multi-wavelength pyrometer in the pressure range of 36–50 GPa. By improving the processing technology for the metal sample and assembly technology for the target, the eight-wavelength light radiation was measured from sapphire under shock pressure without phase transition. The experimental results showed that sapphire has luminous phenomenon from 36.5 GPa. The luminous intensity changes in a linear fashion, revealing the thickness of the radiating layer of shock-compressed sapphire with a constant absorption coefficient. The results indicated that the spectral distribution is a typical thermal radiation, which fits well with the grey-body spectrum. The radiation of sapphire under shock mostly came from the adiabatic shear banding, as determined by comparing the melting line of sapphire using a static high-pressure experiment and theoretical calculations with the radiation temperature. The study is an effective means to obtain the transparent material shock radiation temperature. Moreover, an effective approach is proposed to research the radiation mechanism of transparent material and the high pressure melting line.

The measurement of the growth rate, or the so-called inverse period, of a nuclear reactor is crucial for safety monitoring and control purposes. Due to the inevitable statistical fluctuation of neutron flux at low power-levels, it is difficult to precisely estimate the inverse period from the pulse counting data in the source range. Motivated by the equivalence of the measurement of inverse period and the differentiation of the logarithm of pulse count, a new differentiator is proposed, which is finite-time convergent with a bounded steady estimation error. The feasibility of this newly-built finite-time differentiator is verified by numerical simulation. Then, based on the pulse count data recorded during the startup of a test reactor, the differentiator is used to estimate the inverse period and its derivative, as well as the period and the reactivity of the reactor. The results show that the differentiator is capable of providing a satisfactory estimation of signal derivatives under strong noise.

Fast-actuation cutting systems are in high demand for machining of freeform optical parts. Design of such motion systems requires good balance between structural hardware and controller design. However, the controller tuning process is mostly based on human experience, and it is not feasible to predict positioning performance during the design stage. In this paper, a deterministic controller design approach is adopted to preclude the uncertainty associated with controller tuning, which results in a control law minimizing positioning errors based on plant and disturbance models. Then, the influences of mechanical parameters such as mass, damping, and stiffness are revealed within the closed-loop framework. The positioning error was reduced from 1.19 nm RMS to 0.68 nm RMS with the new controller. Under the measured disturbance conditions, the optimal bearing stiffness and damping coefficient are 1.1×105 N/m and 237.7 N/(m·s−1), respectively. We also found that greater moving inertia helps to reduce all disturbances at high frequencies, in agreement with the positioning experiments. A quantitative understanding of how plant structural parameters affect positioning stability is thus shown in this paper. This is helpful for the understanding of how to reduce error sources from the design point of view.

This research assessed the molecular mechanism of procyanidins (PCs) against neurotoxin 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) and its metabolite 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP+) induced Parkinson’s disease (PD) models. In vitro, PC12 cells were incubated with PCs or deprenyl for 24 h, and then exposed to 1.5 mM MPP+ for 24 h. In vivo, zebrafish larvae (AB strain) 3 days post-fertilization (dpf) were incubated with deprenyl or PCs in 400 μM MPTP for 4 days. Compared with MPP+/MPTP alone, PCs significantly improved antioxidant activities (e.g., glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT)), and decreased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA). Furthermore, PCs significantly increased nuclear Nrf2 accumulation in PC12 cells and raised the expression of NQO1, HO-1, GCLM, and GCLC in both PC12 cells and zebrafish compared to MPP+/MPTP alone. The current study shows that PCs have neuroprotective effects, activate the nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)/antioxidant response element (ARE) pathway and alleviate oxidative damage in MPP+/MPTP-induced PD models.

The accurate prediction of the geological conditions ahead of a tunnel plays an important role in tunnel construction. Among all forward geological prospecting methods, the seismic detection method is widely applied. However, due to the characteristics of the tunnel and the complexity of the geological conditions, the seismic wavefield is complicated. Carrying out a more realistic forward modeling method is vital for fully understanding the law of seismic wave propagation and the characteristics of seismic wavefield in the tunnel. In this paper, the 3D staggered-grid finite-difference scheme in the cylindrical coordinate system based on the decoupled nonconversion elastic wave equation is used to carry out the numerical simulation. This method can avoid the diffraction interferences produced at the edges of the tunnel face in the Cartesian coordinate system. Based on this forward modeling method, the characteristics of wavefield and propagation laws of seismic waves under three kinds of common typical unfavorable geological models were explored, which can provide theoretical guidance to seismic data interpretation of tunnel seismic forward prospecting in practice.

This study evaluated the neuroprotective effects and mechanisms of procyanidins (PCs). In vitro, rat pheochromocytoma cells (PC12 cells) were exposed to PCs (1, 2 or 4 μg/mL) or N-Acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) (20 μM) for 24 h, and then incubated with 200 μM of H2O2 for 24 h. Compared with H2O2 alone, PCs significantly increased antioxidant activities (e.g., glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT)), decreased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA), and increased nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) accumulation and increased the expression of quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1), heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1), glutamate-cysteine ligase modifier subunit (GCLM), and glutamate-cysteine ligase catalytic subunit (GCLC). In vivo, zebrafish larvae (AB strain) 3 days post-fertilization (dpf) were exposed to NAC (30 μM) or PCs (4, 8 or 16 μg/mL) in the absence or presence of 300 μM of H2O2 for 4 days. Compared with H2O2 alone, PCs enhanced antioxidant activities (e.g., GSH-Px, CAT, and SOD), decreased levels of ROS and MDA, and enhanced Nrf2/ antioxidant response element (ARE) activation and raised expression levels of NQO1, HO-1, GCLM, and GCLC. In conclusion, these results indicated that PCs exerted neuroprotective effects via activating the Nrf2/ARE pathway and alleviating oxidative damage.

Freeway traffic management and control often rely on input from fixed-point sensors. A sufficiently high sensor density is required to ensure data reliability and accuracy, which results in high installation and maintenance costs. Moreover, fixed-point sensors encounter difficulties to provide spatiotemporally and wide-ranging information due to the limited observable area. This research exploits the utilization of connected automated vehicles (CAVs) as an alternative data source for freeway traffic management. To handle inherent uncertainty associated with CAV data, we develop an interval type 2 fuzzy logic-based variable speed limit (VSL) system for mixed traffic. The simulation results demonstrate that when more 10% CAVs are deployed, the performance of the proposed CAV-based system can approach that of the detector-based system. It is demonstrated in addition that the introduction of CAVs may make VSL obsolete at very high CAV-equipment rates.

Advancement in science and technology is playing an increasingly important role in solving difficult cases at present. Thermal cameras can help the police crack difficult cases by capturing the heat trace on the ground left by perpetrators, which cannot be spotted by the naked eye. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to establish a thermalfoot model using thermal imaging system to estimate the departure time. To this end, in the current work, we use a thermal camera to acquire the thermal sequence left on the floor, and convert it into the heat signal via image processing algorithm. We establish the model of thermalfoot print as we observe that the residual temperature would exponentially decrease with the departure time according to Newton’s Law of Cooling. The correlation coefficients of 107 thermalfoot models derived from the corresponding 107 heat signals are basically above 0.99. In a validation experiment, a residual analysis is conducted and the residuals between estimated departure time points and ground-truth times are almost within a certain range from −150 s to +150 s. The reverse accuracy of the thermalfoot model for estimating departure time at one-third, one-half, two-thirds, three-fourths, four-fifths, and five-sixths capture time points are 71.96%, 50.47%, 42.06%, 31.78%, 21.70%, and 11.21%, respectively. The results of comparison experiments with two subjective evaluation methods (subjective 1: we directly estimate the departure time according to obtained local curves; subjective 2: we utilize auxiliary means such as a ruler to estimate the departure time based on obtained local curves) further demonstrate the effectiveness of thermalfoot model for detecting the departure time inversely. Experimental results also demonstrated that the thermalfoot model has good performance on the departure time reversal within a short time window someone leaves, whereas it is probably only approximately 15% to accurately determine the departure time via thermalfoot model within a long time window someone leaves. The influence of outliers, ROI (Region of Interest) selection, ROI size, different capture time points and environment temperature on the performance of thermalfoot model on departure time reversal can be explored in the future work. Overall, the thermalfoot model can help the police solve crimes to some extent, which in turn brings more guarantees for people’s health, social security, and stability.

Animal studies have shown the beneficial effect of betaine supplementation on reducing body fat, while the data from human studies are controversial and inconsistent. The objective of the present systematic review was to investigate the effects of betaine intervention on treating obesity in humans and quantitatively evaluate the pooled effects based on randomized controlled trials with a meta-analysis. The PubMed and Scopus databases, and the Cochrane Library, were searched up to September 2019. Weighted mean differences were calculated for net changes in obesity-related indices by using a random-effects model. Publication bias was estimated using Begg’s test. Six studies with 195 participants were identified. Betaine supplementation significantly reduced the total body fat mass (−2.53 kg; 95% CI: −3.93, −0.54 kg; I2 = 6.6%, P = 0.36) and body fat percentage (−2.44%; 95% CI: −4.20, −0.68%; I2 = 0.0%, P = 0.44). No changes were observed regarding body weight (−0.29 kg; 95% CI: −1.48, 0.89 kg; I2 = 0.00%, P = 0.99) and body mass index (−0.10 kg/m2; 95% CI: −5.13, 0.31 kg/m2; I2 = 0.00%, P = 0.84). The results suggested that dietary betaine supplementation might be an effective approach for reducing body fat.

The present case-control study explored the interaction between marine-derived n-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LC PUFAs) and uric acid (UA) on glucose metabolism and risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Two hundred and eleven healthy subjects in control group and 268 T2DM subjects in case group were included. Plasma phospholipid (PL) fatty acids and biochemical parameters were detected by standard methods. Plasma PL C22:6n-3 was significantly lower in case group than in control group, and was negatively correlated with fasting glucose (r = −0.177, p < 0.001). Higher plasma PL C22:6n-3 was associated with lower risk of T2DM, and the OR was 0.32 (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.12 to 0.80; p = 0.016) for per unit increase of C22:6n-3. UA was significantly lower in case group than in control group. UA was positively correlated with fasting glucose in healthy subjects, but this correlation became negative in T2DM subjects. A significant interaction was observed between C22:6n-3 and UA on fasting glucose (p for interaction = 0.005): the lowering effect of C22:6n-3 was only significant in subjects with a lower level of UA. In conclusion, C22:6n-3 interacts with UA to modulate glucose metabolism.

Studies have suggested a lipid extract from hard-shelled mussel (Mytilus coruscus) (HMLE) possessed strong anti-inflammatory activity in arthritis model of rats. This study investigated whether HMLE could improve clinical conditions of rheumatoid arthritis patients. Fifty rheumatoid arthritis patients (28–75 years) were randomly assigned to receive HMLE capsules or receive placebo capsules for 6 months. Forty-two subjects and 50 subjects were included in per-protocol and intention-to-treat analysis, respectively. Significant differences in changes on disease activity score (DAS28) and clinical disease activity index (CDAI) after 6-month intervention (p < 0.01) were observed in both analyses with more evident efficacy shown in per-protocol population (∆DAS28 = 0.47; ∆CDAI = 4.17), which favored the benefits of the HMLE group. TNF-α (tumor necrosis factor α), interleukin (IL)-1β and PGE2 (prostaglandin E2) but not IL-6, were significantly decreased in both groups, and the decrements were much larger in the HMLE group for TNF-α and PGE2 after 6 months from baseline (p < 0.05). IL-10 was significantly increased in both groups and the change was much more evident in the HMLE group (p < 0.05). In conclusion, HMLE exhibited benefits for the clinical conditions of rheumatoid patients in relation to improvement in the balance between pro- and anti-inflammatory factors, which indicated its potential to serve as adjunctive treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. The present study was designed to investigate the anti-inflammatory activity and mechanism of a lipid extract from hard-shelled mussel (Mytilus coruscus) on adjuvant-induced (AIA) and collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) in rats. AIA and CIA rats that received hard-shelled mussel lipid extract (HMLE group) at a dose of 100 mg/kg demonstrated significantly lower paw swelling and arthritic index, but higher body weight gain than those which received olive oil (control group). Similar results were found in arthritic rats that received New Zealand green-lipped mussel lipid extract (GMLE) at the same dosage. The levels of leukotriene B4 (LTB4), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), thromboxane B2 (TXB2) in the serum, and interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-6, interferon-γ (INF-γ), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in the ankle joint synovial fluids of HMLE group rats were significantly lower than those of control group. However, the levels of IL-4 and IL-10 in HMLE group rats were significantly higher than those in the control group. Decreased mRNA expressions of matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP1) and MMP13, but increased tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP1) were observed in the knee joint synovium tissues of HMLE group rats when compared with the control group. No hepatotoxicity was observed in both HMLE and GMLE group rats. The present results indicated that HMLE had a similarly strong anti-inflammatory activity as GMLE. Such a strong efficacy could result from the suppression of inflammatory mediators (LTB4, PGE2, TXB2), pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, INF-γ, TNF-α) and MMPs (MMP1, MMP13), and the promotion of anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-4, IL-10) and TIMPs (TIMP1) productions.

The results of epidemiological studies on the relationship between fruit and vegetable intake and lung cancer risk were inconsistent among participants with different smoking status. The purpose of this study was to investigate these relationships in participants with different smoking status with prospective cohort studies. A systematic literature retrieval was conducted using PubMed and Scopus databases up to June 2019. The summary relative risks (RRs) and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated by random-effects model. The nonlinear dose-response analysis was carried out with restricted cubic spline regression model. Publication bias was estimated using Begg’s test. Nine independent prospective studies were included for data synthesis. Dietary consumption of fruit was negatively correlated with lung cancer risk among current smokers and former smokers, and the summery RRs were 0.86 (95% CI: 0.78, 0.94) and 0.91 (95% CI: 0.84, 0.99), respectively. Consumption of vegetable was significantly associated with reduced risk of lung cancer for current smokers (summary RR = 87%; 95% CI: 0.78, 0.94), but not for former smokers and never for smokers. Dose-response analysis suggested that risk of lung cancer was reduced by 5% (95% CI: 0.93, 0.97) in current smokers, and reduced by 4% (95% CI: 0.93, 0.98) in former smokers with an increase of 100 grams of fruit intake per day, respectively. Besides, dose-response analysis indicated a 3% reduction in lung cancer risk in current smokers for 100 gram per day increase of vegetable intake (95% CI: 0.96, 1.00). The findings of this study provide strong evidence that higher fruit consumption is negatively associated with the risk of lung cancer among current smokers and former smokers, while vegetable intake is significantly correlated with reducing the risk of lung cancer in current smokers. These findings might have considerable public health significance for the prevention of lung cancer through dietary interventions.

The long-term influence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) on offspring and the effect of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) on GDM offspring are poorly understood. We studied the long-term diabetic risk in GDM offspring and evaluated the effect of n-3 PUFA intervention. Healthy offspring rats were fed standard diet (soybean oil) after weaning. GDM offspring were divided into three groups: GDM offspring (soybean oil), n-3 PUFA adequate offspring (fish oil), and n-3 PUFA deficient offspring (safflower oil), fed up to 11 months old. The diabetic risk of GDM offspring gradually increased from no change at weaning to obvious impaired glucose and insulin tolerance at 11 months old. N-3 PUFA decreased oxidative stress and inflammation in the liver of older GDM offspring. There was a differential effect of n-3 PUFA and n-6 PUFA on hepatic telomere length in GDM offspring. Non-targeted metabolomics showed that n-3 PUFA played a modulating role in the liver, in which numerous metabolites and metabolic pathways were altered when GDM offspring grew to old age. Many metabolites were related to diabetes risk, such as α-linolenic acid, palmitic acid, ceramide, oxaloacetic acid, tocotrienol, tetrahydro-11-deoxycortisol, andniacinamide. In summary, GDM offspring exhibited obvious diabetes risk at old age, whereas n-3 PUFA decreased this risk.

A multi-aperture atmospheric pressure plasma processing (APPP) method was proposed to structure the continuous phase plate (CPP). The APPP system was presented and removal investigation showed the removal function of APPP was of a high repeatability and robustness to the small disturbance of gas flows. A mathematical model for the multi-aperture structuring process was established and the simulation analysis indicated the advantages of the proposed method in terms of balancing the efficiency and accuracy of the process. The experimental results showed that multi-aperture APPP has the ability to structure a 30 mm × 30 mm CPP with the accuracy of 163.4 nm peak to valley (PV) and 31.7 nm root mean square (RMS).

Slow tool servo (STS) diamond turning is a well-developed technique for freeform optics machining. Due to low machining efficiency, fluctuations in side-feeding motion and redundant control points for large aperture optics, this paper reports a novel adaptive tool path generation (ATPG) for STS diamond turning. In ATPG, the sampling intervals both in feeding and cutting direction are independently controlled according to interpolation error and cutting residual tolerance. A smooth curve is approximated to the side-feeding motion for reducing the fluctuations in feeding direction. Comparison of surface generation of typical freeform surfaces with ATPG and commercial software DiffSys is conducted both theoretically and experimentally. The result demonstrates that the ATPG can effectively reduce the volume of control points, decrease the vibration of side-feeding motion and improve machining efficiency while surface quality is well maintained for large aperture freeform optics.

Freeform surfaces are featured with superior optical and physical properties and are widely adopted in advanced optical systems. Slow tool servo (STS) ultra-precision machining is an enabling manufacturing technology for fabrication of non-rotationally symmetric surfaces. This work presents a theoretical and experimental study of surface topography generation in STS machining of freeform surfaces. To achieve the nanometric surface topography, a systematic approach for tool path generation was investigated, including tool path planning, tool geometry selection, and tool radius compensation. The tool radius compensation is performed only in one direction to ensure no high frequency motion is imposed on the non-dynamic axis. The development of the surface generation simulation allows the prediction of the surface topography under various tool and machining variables. Furthermore, it provides an important means for better understanding the surface generation mechanism without the need for costly trial and error tests. Machining and measurement experiments of a sinusoidal grid and microlens array sample validated the proposed tool path generation and demonstrated the effectiveness of the STS machining process to fabricate freeform surfaces with nanometric topography. The measurement results also show a uniform topography distribution over the entire surface and agree well with the simulated results.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause of mortality. The effects of several unsaturated fatty acids on cardiometabolic health, such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), α linolenic acid (ALA), linoleic acid (LA), and oleic acid (OA) have received much attention in past years. In addition, results from recent studies revealed that several other uncommon fatty acids (fatty acids present at a low content or else not contained in usual foods), such as furan fatty acids, n-3 docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), and conjugated fatty acids, also have favorable effects on cardiometabolic health. In the present report, we searched the literature in PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library to review the research progress on anti-CVD effect of these uncommon fatty acids. DPA has a favorable effect on cardiometabolic health in a different way to other long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC n-3 PUFAs), such as EPA and DHA. Furan fatty acids and conjugated linolenic acid (CLNA) may be potential bioactive fatty acids beneficial for cardiometabolic health, but evidence from intervention studies in humans is still limited, and well-designed clinical trials are required. The favorable effects of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) on cardiometabolic health observed in animal or in vitro cannot be replicated in humans. However, most intervention studies in humans concerning CLA have only evaluated its effect on cardiometabolic risk factors but not its direct effect on risk of CVD, and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) will be required to clarify this point. However, several difficulties and limitations exist for conducting RCTs to evaluate the effect of these fatty acids on cardiometabolic health, especially the high costs for purifying the fatty acids from natural sources. This review provides a basis for better nutritional prevention and therapy of CVD.

Slow tool servo (STS) assisted ultra-precision diamond turning is considered as a promising machining process with high accuracy and low cost to generate the large-area micro lens arrays (MLAs) on the roller mold. However, the chatter mark is obvious at the cut-in part of every machined micro lens along the cutting direction, which is a common problem for the generation of MLAs using STS. In this study, a novel forming approach based on STS is presented to fabricate MLAs on the aluminum alloy (6061) roller mold, which is a high-efficiency machining approach in comparison to a traditional method based on STS. Based on the different distribution patterns of the discrete point of micro lens, the equal-arc method and the equal-angle method are also proposed to generate the tool path. According to a kinematic analysis of the cutting axis, the chatter mark results from the overlarge instantaneous acceleration oscillations of the cutting axis during STS diamond turning process of MLAs. Cutting parameters including the number of discrete points and cutting time of every discrete point have been experimentally investigated to reduce the chatter mark. Finally, typical MLAs (20.52-μm height and 700-μm aperture) is successfully machined with the optimal cutting parameters. The results are acquired with a fine surface quality, i.e., form error of micro lenses is 0.632 μm, which validate the feasibility of the new machining method.

Previous studies have not drawn a consistent conclusion about effect of multivitamin and multimineral supplementation (MVMS) on blood pressure. A comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library (up to May 2018) and references of relevant articles was undertaken. The present meta-analysis included 12 randomized controlled trials (RCTs), of which eight RCTs in 2011 subjects evaluated the effect of MVMS on blood pressure and four RCTs in 21,196 subjects evaluated the effect of MVMS on the risk of hypertension. MVMS had a lowering effect on systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP): the weighted mean difference (WMD) was −1.31 mmHg (95% CI, −2.48 to −0.14 mmHg) and −0.71 mmHg (95% CI, −1.43 to 0.00 mmHg), respectively. Subgroup analysis indicated that the lowering effect of MVMS on blood pressure was only significant in 134 subjects with chronic disease but not in 1580 healthy subjects, and the WMD for systolic blood pressure (SBP) and DBP in subjects with chronic disease was −6.29 mmHg (95% CI, −11.09 to −1.50 mmHg) and −2.32 mmHg (95% CI, −4.50 to −0.13 mmHg), respectively. The effect size of MVMS on SBP in 58 hypertensive subjects (WMD, −7.98 mmHg; 95% CI, −14.95 to −1.02 mmHg) was more than six times of that in 1656 normotensive subjects (WMD, −1.25 mmHg; 95% CI, −2.48 to −0.02 mmHg). However, no significant effect on DBP was observed in both hypertensive and normotensive subgroups. There was no significant effect of MVMS on risk of hypertension in 22,852 subjects with a normal blood pressure at baseline. In conclusion, although MVMS had a significant lowering effect on blood pressure in normotensive subjects, the lowering effect was too small to effectively prevent future hypertension. MVMS may be an effective method for blood pressure control in subjects with chronic disease including hypertension, but the sample size of subjects with hypertension or other chronic disease was too small, and more well-designed RCTs are needed to confirm this result.

This study investigated the protective effects of a lipid extract from hard-shelled mussel (HMLE) on intestinal integrity and the underlying mechanisms after a lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge in mice by using a 3 × 2 factorial design. Mice received olive oil, fish oil, and HMLE (n = 12 per group) by using gastric gavage for six weeks, respectively. Then half the mice in each group was injected intraperitoneally with LPS and the other half with phosphate buffered saline. Four hours after injection, mice were sacrificed and samples were collected. n-3 PUFAs were significantly enriched in erythrocytes following fish oil and HMLE supplementation. Both fish oil and HMLE improved intestinal morphology by restoring the ileac villus height and barrier function, which is indicated by decreased colonic myeloperoxidase activity and increased diamine oxidase activity as well as enhanced mRNA expression of intestinal tight junction proteins known as occludin and claudin-1 when compared with olive oil. In addition, both fish oil and HMLE increased colon production and the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokine, IL-10, while they inhibited the abnormal production and expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines including TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 relative to the olive oil. Lastly, in comparison with olive oil, both fish oil and HMLE downregulated the TLR-4 signaling pathway by reducing the expression of two key molecules in this pathway, which are called TLR-4 and MyD88. These results suggest that HMLE had a protective effect on intestinal integrity after the LPS challenge, which was equivalent to that of fish oil. This effect might be associated with the regulation of inflammatory mediators and the inhibition of the TLR-4 signaling pathway.

In order to enhance the measurement availability for manufacturing applications, on-machine surface measurement (OMSM) is integrated onto the machine tools, which avoids the errors caused by re-positioning workpieces and utilizes the machine axes to extend the measuring range as well. However, due to the fact that measurement probe actuation is performed using the machine tool axes, the inherent kinematics error will inevitably induce additional deviations onto the OMSM results. This paper presents a systematic methodology of kinematics error modelling, measurement, and compensation for OMSM on an ultra-precision turning lathe. According to the measurement task, a selective kinematics error model is established with four primary error components in the sensitive measurement direction, based on multi-body theory and a homogeneous transformation matrix (HTM). In order to separate the artefact error from the measurement results, the selected error components are measured using the reversal method. The measured error value agrees well with the machine tool’s specification and a kinematics error map is generated for further compensation. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed kinematics error modelling, measurement, and compensation, an OMSM experiment of an optically flat mirror is carried out. The result indicates the OMSM is the superposition of the sample surface form error and the machine tool kinematics error. With the implementation of compensation, the accuracy of the characterized flatness error from the OMSM improves by 67%.

The challenge of worldwide energy decarbonization is crucial to ensure sustainable development. The achievement of decarbonization encompasses not only a considerable exploitation of renewable energy sources, but also a paradigm shift in final energy uses towards their massive electrification. Electrification based on Global Energy Interconnections (GEI) is one of the possible pathways towards decarbonization in energy systems. In this paper, we critically discuss the idea of decarbonization through global interconnections in an ‘electricity based’ world, contrasting it against the typically desirable attributes for energy in terms of security, efficiency, sustainability, and affordability. We provide a comparative analysis of global interconnection with other internationally proposed visions of future energy scenarios. The analysis shows that the GEI option could be particularly beneficial from an environmental point of view; however, it requests deep and relevant modifications in the energy markets and regulations, in which a common framework based on the cooperation among different countries is needed.

Lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease have shared etiology, including key etiological changes (e.g., DNA damage and epigenetics change) and lung function impairment. Focusing on those shared targets may help in the prevention of both. Certain micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) and phytochemicals (carotenoids and phenols) have potent antioxidant or methyl-donating properties and thus have received considerable interest. We reviewed recent papers probing into the potential of nutrients with respect to lung function preservation and prevention of lung cancer risk, and suggest several hypothetical intervention patterns. Intakes of vitamins (i.e., A, C, D, E, B12), carotenoids, flavonoids, curcumins, resveratrol, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids all show protective effects against lung function loss, some mainly by improving average lung function and others through reducing decline rate. Dietary interventions early in life may help lung function reserve over the lifespan. Protective nutrient interventions among smokers are likely to mitigate the effects of cigarettes on lung health. We also discuss their underlying mechanisms and some possible causes for the inconsistent results in observational studies and supplementation trials. The role of the lung microbiome on lung health and its potential utility in identifying protective nutrients are discussed as well. More prospective cohorts and well-designed clinical trials are needed to promote the transition of individualized nutrient interventions into health policy.

The relationship between circulating fatty acid (FA) composition and childhood sleep disturbance remains largely unclear. We aimed to investigate the association of erythrocyte membrane FA composition with prevalence of sleep disturbance in Chinese children and adolescents. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 2337 school-aged children and adolescents who completed a clinical assessment in Beijing, China. Presence of sleep disturbance was self-reported or parent-reported by questionnaires. Erythrocyte FAs were measured by gas chromatography, and desaturase activities were estimated by FA ratios. Multivariable-adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for sleep disturbance across FA quartiles were calculated by a logistical regression model. We found higher proportions of erythrocyte phospholipid 24:0, 24:1n-9, and lower proportions of total n-3 polyunsaturated FA (PUFA), 22:5n-3 and 22:6n-3 in participants with sleep disturbance compared with those without. In the logistical regression models, significant inverse associations were found for total n-3 PUFA, 22:5n-3 and 22:6n-3, the highest versus lowest quartile ORs and 95% CIs were 0.57 (0.40, 0.82), 0.67 (0.47, 0.97) and 0.69 (0.49, 0.96), respectively. For per 1 SD difference of proportion, OR and 95% CI of prevalence of sleep disturbance was 0.91 (0.86, 0.97) for total n-3 PUFA, 0.90 (0.82, 0.98) for 22:5n-3, and 0.92 (0.86, 0.99) for 22:6n-3, respectively. No significant association was found for saturated fatty acids, monounsaturated fatty acids, n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids or FA ratios. The present study suggested that erythrocyte n-3 PUFAs, especially 22:5n-3 and 22:6n-3, are inversely associated with prevalence of sleep disturbance in Chinese children and adolescents.

The associations between n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk have demonstrated inconsistent results. The present study aimed to investigate whether higher circulating n-3 PUFAs and dietary n-3 PUFAs intake have a protective effect on MetS risk. A systematic literature search in the PubMed, Scopus, and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases was conducted up to March 2017. Odd ratios (ORs) from case-control and cross-sectional studies were combined using a random-effects model for the highest versus lowest category. The differences of n-3 PUFAs between healthy subjects and patients with MetS were calculated as weighted mean difference (WMD) by using a random-effects model. Seven case-control and 20 cross-sectional studies were included. A higher plasma/serum n-3 PUFAs was associated with a lower MetS risk (Pooled OR = 0.63, 95% CI: 0.49, 0.81). The plasma/serum n-3 PUFAs in controls was significantly higher than cases (WMD: 0.24; 95% CI: 0.04, 0.43), especially docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). However, no significant association was found between dietary intake of n-3 PUFAs or fish and MetS risk. The present study provides substantial evidence of a higher circulating n-3 PUFAs associated with a lower MetS risk. The circulating n-3 PUFAs can be regarded as biomarkers indicating MetS risk, especially DPA and DHA.

Neural tube defects (NTDs) are a group of severe congenital malformations, induced by the combined effects of genes and the environment. The most valuable finding so far has been the protective effect of folic acid supplementation against NTDs. However, many women do not take folic acid supplements until they are pregnant, which is too late to prevent NTDs effectively. Long-term intake of folic acid–fortified food is a good choice to solve this problem, and mandatory folic acid fortification should be further promoted, especially in Europe, Asia and Africa. Vitamin B2, vitamin B-6, vitamin B-12, choline, betaine and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) can also reduce the NTD risk by interacting with the one-carbon metabolism pathway. This suggest that multivitamin B combined with choline, betaine and n-3 PUFAs supplementation may have a better protective effect against NTDs than folic acid alone. Genetic polymorphisms involved in one-carbon metabolism are associated with NTD risk, and gene screening for women of childbearing age prior to pregnancy may help prevent NTDs induced by the risk allele. In addition, the consumption of alcohol, tea and coffee, and low intakes of fruit and vegetable are also associated with the increased risk of NTDs, and should be avoided by women of childbearing age.

Results from prospective cohort studies on fish or long-chain (LC) n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) intake and elevated blood pressure (EBP) are inconsistent. We aimed to investigate the summary effects. Pertinent studies were identified from PubMed and EMBASE database through October 2015. Multivariate-adjusted risk ratios (RRs) for incidence of EBP in the highest verses the bottom category of baseline intake of fish or LC n-3 PUFA were pooled using a random-effects meta-analysis. Over the follow-up ranging from 3 to 20 years, 20,497 EBP events occurred among 56,204 adults from eight prospective cohort studies. The summary RR (SRR) was 0.96 (95% CI: 0.81, 1.14; I2 = 44.70%) for fish in four studies, and 0.73 (95% CI: 0.60, 0.89; I2 = 75.00%) for LC n-3 PUFA in six studies (three studies for biomarker vs. three studies for diet). Circulating LC n-3 PUFA as biomarker was inversely associated with incidence of EBP (SRR: 0.67; 95% CI: 0.55, 0.83), especially docosahexaenoic acid (SRR: 0.64; 95% CI: 0.45, 0.88), whereas no significant association was found for dietary intake (SRR: 0.80; 95% CI: 0.58, 1.10). The present finding suggests that increased intake of docosahexaenoic acid to improve its circulating levels may benefit primary prevention of EBP.

Himalayan leucogranite is an excellent target for understanding the orogenic process of the India–Asia collision, but its origin and tectonic significance are still under debate. An integrated study of geochronology, geochemistry, and in situ Sr-Nd-Hf isotopes was conducted for a tourmaline-bearing leucogranite in the eastern Tethyan Himalaya using LA-ICP-MS, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, and ICP-MS and LA-MC-ICP-MS, respectively. LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating of zircon and monazite showed that it was emplaced at ~19 Ma. The leucogranite had high SiO2 and Al2O3 contents ranging from 73.16 to 73.99 wt.% and 15.05 to 15.24 wt.%, respectively. It was characterized by a high aluminum saturation index (1.14–1.19) and Rb/Sr ratio (3.58–6.35), which is characteristic of S-type granite. The leucogranite was enriched in light rare-earth elements (LREEs; e.g., La and Ce) and large ion lithophile elements (LILEs; e.g., Rb, K, and Pb) and depleted in heavy rare-earth elements (e.g., Tm, Yb, and Lu) and high field strength elements (HFSEs; e.g., Nb, Zr, and Ti). It was characterized by high I Sr (t) (0.7268–0.7281) and low ε Nd (t) (−14.6 to −13.2) and ε Hf (t) (−12.6 to −9.47), which was consistent with the isotopic characteristics of the Higher Himalayan Sequence. Petrogenetically, the origin of the leucogranite is best explained by the decompression-induced muscovite dehydration melting of an ancient metapelitic source within the Higher Himalayan Sequence during regional extension due to the movement of the South Tibetan Detachment System (STDS). The significantly high lithium and beryllium contents of the leucogranite and associated pegmatite suggest that Himalayan leucogranites possess huge potential for lithium and beryllium exploration.

In response to the limitations and one-sidedness of the simulation results of a rigid three-row cylindrical roller bearing for an offshore wind turbine main shaft under constant-load conditions, this paper proposes a simulation analysis method under variable loads. A contact mechanics model and a flexible body model are established, and the rigid-flexible coupled treatment is applied to the bearing’s inner and outer ring and cages. Based on variable load conditions, the theoretical speeds, simulated speeds, and acceleration responses of the pure rigid model and the rigid-flexible coupled model are compared, and the model is validated. Finally, the dynamic and transient responses reveal the time-varying characteristics of bearing loads and stress distribution patterns under different driving speeds and contact friction coefficients in the rigid-flexible coupled model. The conclusions are as follows: the rotational error of the rigid model is 1.67 to 3.76 times greater than that of the rigid-flexible coupled model, and the acceleration trend of the rigid-flexible coupled model is more stable with smaller speed fluctuations. The average forces on the thrust roller and cages increase with the driving speed, while those on the radial roller, cages, and inner ring decrease with the driving speed. The average force on the near-blade end cage is approximately 1.19 to 1.59 times that of the far end. The average force on the roller and cages significantly decreases with decreasing friction coefficient, with a reduction ranging from 50.08% to 76.41%. The maximum stress of the bearing increases with increasing driving speed. The novel simulation method for a rigid-flexible, coupled, three-row cylindrical roller bearing model under variable load conditions proposed in this paper can more accurately simulate the dynamic response of offshore wind turbine main shaft bearings during service. The results obtained in this paper provide highly valuable guidance for the research and design of offshore wind turbine main shaft bearings.
