The Panchthar–Ilam–Taplejung Corridor in Eastern Nepal, managed through community forestry, is a crucial habitat for the Himalayan red panda, an endangered carnivore threatened by forest degradation and illegal trade. We deployed the altitude line intercept and ten-tree plotless methods to evaluate the distribution of Himalayan red pandas and the environmental factors affecting them within four community forests, namely Singhadevi, Chitre-Hile, Chhipchhipe, and Kalikhop-Dadehli, of the corridor. We established a total of 23 transects and 92 plots, identifying 41 plots with evidence of the Himalayan red panda’s presence. The sign occurrence revealed a clumped distribution of the species across all four community forests. The Himalayan red panda signs were observed between 2200 m and 2700 m above sea level (asl) and the majority of them were from habitats with a moderate slope within elevations of 2400 m to 2500 m asl. The primary sites for the defecation were large horizontal tree branches (78.12%), followed by forest ground (15.62%) and rocks (6.25%). The dominant tree species in their habitats included Lithocarpus pachyphylla (Importance value index, IVI = 45.05), Symplocus theifolia (IVI = 37.19), Symplocos pyrifolia (IVI = 20.99), Quercus lamellosa (IVI = 19.25), and Magnolia campbellii (IVI = 17.25). Among the thirteen environmental variables examined, proximity to water, distance to road, bamboo density, and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index were identified as the major factors influencing the Himalayan red panda’s distribution. This research provides crucial insights to develop site-specific habitat management plans for community forestry.

Bat coronaviruses cause a wide range of illnesses in humans and animals. Bats are known to harbor a wide diversity of Alphacoronaviruses and Betacoronaviruses. Betacoronaviruses have been linked to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), and other diseases such as gastroenteritis, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia. In the last 20 years, three betacoronaviruses emerged and caused widespread outbreaks in humans, including two deadly betacoronavirus epidemics, SARS-CoV, with mortality rate of 10%, and MERS-CoV, with mortality rate of 34.7%, and SARS-CoV-2, which caused the COVID-19 pandemic, with mortality rate of 3.4%. Studies have shown that bats are the main natural reservoirs for these viruses or their ancestral viruses. Observed variations in bat coronavirus genomes indicate that these viruses may have a potential to transmit to other hosts in close contact with humans and subsequently transmit to humans. As of today, there are no reported cases of direct coronavirus transmission from bats to humans. One reason for this might be that intermediate hosts are required for the transmission of bat coronaviruses to humans. Further studies are needed to map the amino acids and genomic regions responsible for the interactions between the spike of coronavirus and its receptors.

In radiotherapy treatment planning, the absorbed doses are subject to executional and preparational errors, which propagate to plan quality metrics. Accurately quantifying these uncertainties is imperative for improved treatment outcomes. One approach, analytical probabilistic modeling (APM), presents a highly computationally efficient method. This study evaluates the empirical distribution of dose–volume histogram points (a typical plan metric) derived from Monte Carlo sampling to quantify the accuracy of modeling uncertainties under different distribution assumptions, including Gaussian, log-normal, four-parameter beta, gamma, and Gumbel distributions. Since APM necessitates the bivariate cumulative distribution functions, this investigation also delves into approximations using a Gaussian or an Ali–Mikhail–Haq Copula. The evaluations are performed in a one-dimensional simulated geometry and on patient data for a lung case. Our findings suggest that employing a beta distribution offers improved modeling accuracy compared to a normal distribution. Moreover, the multivariate Gaussian model outperforms the Copula models in patient data. This investigation highlights the significance of appropriate statistical distribution selection in advancing the accuracy of uncertainty modeling in radiotherapy treatment planning, extending an understanding of the analytical probabilistic modeling capacities in this crucial medical domain.

Structures are recommended to be designed and constructed with the integration of structural health monitoring techniques to ensure that they can dissipate a large amount of energy without considerable damage when subjected to earthquakes. Hysteretic (H), friction (F), viscous (V), and viscoelastic (VE) dampers were employed in this study to observe the response of buildings using the commercially available software ETABS. The effect of different dampers along with configurations on three prototype concrete buildings (3, 5, and 10-storey) was studied by performing a time history analysis. Initially, the response of the buildings was observed in terms of storey drifts, base shear, and displacement without using dampers, while gradually increasing the damping ratio from 0 to 40%. Subsequently, the response of the buildings was evaluated in terms of displacements and base shear using various types of dampers with different configurations. The analysis results demonstrated that the effectiveness of viscous and viscoelastic dampers is higher for 3 and 5-storey buildings, while friction and hysteresis dampers are more suitable for 10-storey buildings. This information enables informed decisions regarding the performance and maintenance of dampers, contributing to the overall resilience and durability of structures in seismic events.

Usutu virus (USUV) is an emerging mosquito-transmitted flavivirus with increasing incidence of human infection and geographic expansion, thus posing a potential threat to public health. In this study, we established a comprehensive spatiotemporal database encompassing USUV infections in vectors, animals, and humans worldwide by an extensive literature search. Based on this database, we characterized the geographic distribution and epidemiological features of USUV infections. By employing boosted regression tree (BRT) models, we projected the distributions of three main vectors (Culex pipiens, Aedes albopictus, and Culiseta longiareolata) and three main hosts (Turdus merula, Passer domesticus, and Ardea cinerea) to obtain the mosquito index and bird index. These indices were further incorporated as predictors into the USUV infection models. Through an ensemble learning model, we achieved a decent model performance, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.992. The mosquito index contributed significantly, with relative contributions estimated at 25.51%. Our estimations revealed a potential exposure area for USUV spanning 1.80 million km2 globally with approximately 1.04 billion people at risk. This can guide future surveillance efforts for USUV infections, especially for countries located within high-risk areas and those that have not yet conducted surveillance activities.

The Omura’s whale (Balaenoptera omurai) is one of the most recently described species of baleen whale. Initially known only from stranding and whaling specimens, it has now been identified in all ocean basins excluding the central and eastern Pacific. Unlike most baleen whales that migrate between the poles and the equator seasonally, the Omura’s whale is known to inhabit tropical to sub-tropical waters year-round. In Australian waters, there remain fewer than 30 confirmed visual sightings over the past decade. However, based on acoustic records, the Omura’s whale has been detected off areas of the northwest coast of Australia year-round. This study utilises passive acoustic recordings from 41 locations around Australia from 2005 to 2023 to assess the distribution and seasonality of the Omura’s whale. The seasonal presence of Omura’s whale vocalisations varied by location, with higher presence at lower latitudes. Vocalisations were detected year-round in the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf in the Timor Sea, and near Browse Island and Scott Reef, in the Kimberley region. In the Pilbara region, acoustic presence mostly peaked from February to April and no acoustic presence was consistently observed from July to September across all sites. The most southerly occurrence of Omura’s whale vocalisations was recorded off the North West Cape in the Gascoyne region. Vocalisations similar but not identical to those of the Omura’s whale were detected in the Great Barrier Reef. The identified seasonal distribution provides valuable information to assess environmental and anthropogenic pressures on the Omura’s whale and to aid in creating management and conservation policies for the species in Australia.

Morchella spp. (true morels) are precious edible mushrooms consumed around the world, with a delicious taste, rich nutritional value, and unique healthcare effects. Various fungi and bacteria have been reported to colonize the ascocarps of Morchella, damaging their fruiting bodies and leading to serious economic losses in cultivation. The species identification of these colonizing organisms is crucial for understanding their colonization mechanisms on morels. Slime molds, which have characteristics of both “fungi” and “animals”, can occasionally colonize crops and edible fungi. However, there have been no reports of dictyostelid cellular slime molds (dictyostelids) colonizing plants and fungi to date. In this study, we discovered that dictyostelids colonized the surface of one wild ascoma of Morchella in the forest of Chongqing, China, with the tissues being black and rotten. Macro- and micro-morphological observations, along with molecular phylogenetic analyses, identified the specimens investigated in this study as Dictyostelium implicatum and Morchella sp. Mel-21. The results provide new knowledge of dictyostelid colonization on organisms and contribute to the diversity of species colonizing true morels. Moreover, this is also the first report of dictyostelids distributed in Chongqing, China. This study enhances our insights into the life history and potential ecological significance of dictyostelids and updates their distribution area in China. Further research will be conducted to uncover the mechanisms behind the colonization observed in this study.

This study explores the distribution of agrowellness products and services from a sustainability perspective, focusing on consumer perceptions in Slovenia’s Eastern Cohesion Region. Utilizing an empirical approach through an online survey, the research assesses how sustainable lifestyle practices influence the frequency of agrowellness goods consumption and their perceived availability. The study employs structural equation modeling (SEM) to test four hypotheses, revealing that sustainable lifestyle practices positively affect the frequency of agrowellness product usage, enhancing the perception of product availability. A critical novel contribution of the research is identifying sociodemographic factors as significant moderators of these relationships, offering more profound insights into consumer behavior. Additionally, the frequency of use mediates the link between a sustainable lifestyle and perceived availability, with gender, age, education, and the place of residence as essential moderators. The findings contribute to theory and practice, offering actionable recommendations for marketing and distribution strategies to enhance the accessibility and appeal of agrowellness products. These insights provide valuable guidance for stakeholders in agriculture, rural development, and wellness tourism, with broader implications for policy development aimed at promoting sustainable lifestyles and supporting rural economies.

In this work, a comprehensive multi-physics electrochemical hybrid stack model is developed for a vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) stack considering electrolyte flow, mass transport, electrochemical reactions, shunt currents, and as heat generation and transfer simultaneously. Compared with other VRFB stack models, this model is more comprehensive in considering the influence of multiple factors. Based on the established model, the electrolyte flow rate distribution across cells in the stack is investigated. The distribution and variation in shunt currents, single-cell current and single-cell voltage are analyzed. The distribution and variation in temperature and heat generation and heat transfer are also researched. It can be found that the VRFB stack temperature will exceed 40 °C when operating at 60 A and 100 mA cm−2 at an ambient temperature of 30 °C, which will lead to electrolyte ion precipitation, affecting the performance and safety of the battery. To control the stack temperature below 40 °C, a new tank cooling control strategy is proposed, and the suitable starting cooling point and the controlled temperature are specified. Compared with the common room cooling strategy, the new tank cooling strategy reduces energy consumption by 27.18% during 20 charge–discharge cycles.

We examine the distribution, habitat association, morphometrics, meristics, and reproductive attributes of Amblyraja radiata over much of its Canadian range, Grand Banks to Arctic waters. It is distributed widely on the shelf and upper slope between 30 and 1288 m, reaching highest density in 100–400 m and occupying most available temperatures, between −1.0 and 8.8 °C, but concentrating in 1.6–3.5 °C. The maximum (and average) size decreases with increasing latitude in a continuum from 102 cm (55 cm) in the south, to 45 cm (20 cm) in the north. The proportion of mature fish increases with depth (40% at 0–50 m to 80% at 1150–1200 m) and temperature (35% at A. radiata maturity is also reflected in the rapid increase in the size of secondary sexual characteristics. Some meristics were consistent over the entire study area (spines near the spiracles and shoulders) while others varied with latitude (teeth rows, midline spines, spines near the eyes, % dorsal fins joined, spines between dorsal fins) or by fish length/maturity; the tail length/total length as a proportion of total length decreased during Stage 1 then increased at onset of maturity.

The wild relatives of crops play a critical role in enhancing agricultural resilience and sustainability by contributing valuable traits for crop improvement. Shifts in climatic conditions and human activities threaten plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA), jeopardizing contributions to future food production and security. Studies and inventories of the extant agrobiodiversity, in terms of numbers and distribution patterns of species and their genetic diversity, are primordial for developing effective and comprehensive conservation strategies. We conducted an ecogeographic study on Ipomoea species and assessed their diversity, distribution, and ecological preferences across different topographic, altitudinal, geographical, and climatic gradients, at a total of 450 sites across Mauritius. Species distribution maps overlaid with climatic data highlighted specific ecological distribution. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed species distribution was influenced by geographical factors. Regional richness analyses indicated varying densities, with some species exhibiting localized distributions and specific ecological preferences while the other species showed diverse distribution patterns. Field surveys identified 14 species and 2 subspecies out of 21 species and 2 subspecies of Ipomoea reported in Mauritius. A gap in ex situ germplasm collections was observed and several species were identified as threatened. Further investigations and a more long-term monitoring effort to better guide conservation decisions are proposed.

Given the limited understanding of species diversity and ecological preferences of diatoms of the genus Navicula in spring ecosystems, herein we present and describe as species new to science, Navicula aquaesuavis Lange-Bert., Levkov, Cid-Rodríguez, A.A.Saber and Cantonati sp. nov. This species was collected from a mountain spring located above the tree line at 1613 m a.s.l. in the Northern Apennines. The Fontana del Vescovo (Bishop’s spring), which is the locus classicus of the new species, has a low conductivity (60–70 µS cm−1), temperature of ca. 5 °C, circumneutral pH (7.3–7.5), relatively low nitrate (ca. 1 mg L−1), and also suffered from a discharge reduction from 1 to 0.1 L s−1 from 2011 to 2023. The putative new species was confirmed by a second finding in Northern Macedonia, and we thoroughly document this second population as well. We seized the opportunity to describe this new Navicula and review the global literature on the diatom genus Navicula in spring ecosystems. Using the results of this review and our own databases on springs and wells in central Europe and Egypt, we discuss the main Navicula species and their environmental preferences in spring habitats.

The complex and diverse phenomenon of fungal bioluminescence has captured human curiosity. Nevertheless, in the field of studies, there are not many attempts made particularly to reveal the new species of these interesting fungi. This study comprehensively reviews the diversity, distribution, evolution, bioluminescence mechanisms, ecological roles, and potential applications of these fungi. Most importantly, we also present an updated list of the reported bioluminescent fungi (122) so far identified from five distinct evolutionary lineages worldwide—Armillaria, Eoscyphella, Lucentipes, Mycenoid, and Omphalotus—mainly in tropical and subtropical areas. Bioluminescent fungi are descended from the last common ancestor of the Mycenoid and the Marasmioid clades of Agaricales, which have been maintained for at least 160 million years of evolution. We underscore the potential for future research to understand the ecological role of bioluminescent fungi, inspiring hope and optimism for the future of this field.

In recent years, the widespread application of antibiotics has raised global concerns, posing a severe threat to ecological health. In this study, the occurrence, source, and ecological risks of 39 antibiotics belonging to 5 classes in mangrove sediments from Lianzhou Bay, China, were assessed. The total concentrations of the antibiotics (∑39 antibiotics) ranged from 65.45 to 202.24 ng/g dry weight (dw), with an average of 142.73 ± 36.76 ng/g dw. The concentrations of these five classes of antibiotics were as follows: Sulfonamides (SAs) > Tetracyclines (TCs) > Fluoroquinolones (QUs) > Penicillin (PCs) > Macrolides (MLs). The spatial distribution of antibiotics varied as high tidal zone > middle tidal zone > low tidal zone. The total organic carbon (TOC), pH, nitrate (NO3−-N), and nitrite (NO2−-N) of the sediment significantly influenced the distribution of antibiotics (p < 0.05). A source analysis identified untreated sewage from aquaculture as the primary source of antibiotics in the local mangrove. A risk assessment revealed that ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, ofloxacin of QUs, and tetracycline of TCs exhibited medium risks to algae in certain sampling sites, while other antibiotics exhibited low or no risks to all organisms. Nevertheless, the total risk of all the detected antibiotics to algae was medium in 95% of the sites. The overall ecological risk level of antibiotics in the middle tidal zone was slightly lower than in the high tidal zone and the lowest in the low tidal zone. In summary, the experimental results provided insights into the fate and transport behaviors of antibiotics in mangrove sediments from Lianzhou Bay.

This study outlines the procedures used for collecting, processing, and categorizing data on 16 new mammal species for mainland Portugal, belonging to four taxonomic groups: Eulipotyphla (1), Chiroptera (4), Rodentia (2), and Cetacea (9). Data collection and processing encompassed field and lab work and bibliographic compilation. Data categorization involves, whenever possible, the assessment of the approximate number of mature individuals in populations, the extent of occurrence, and the area of occupancy. The approach employed led to the classification of eight out of the 16 species into an IUCN category: two non-volant small mammals and one bat species were designated as Vulnerable, requiring ongoing monitoring; one rodent and three cetaceans were assigned to Data Deficient due to insufficient available information; and a single bat species was classified as Least Concern due to the high abundance of local populations. For small mammals and bats, alterations to natural systems and climate change emerged as the most relevant threatening factors, while for cetaceans, human activities such as fishing, commercial shipping, and tourism were identified as the primary survival risks. It is recommended to maintain action programs that assist in defining strategic orientations for the implementation of conservation measures on a case-by-case basis.

Deepwater survey data and specimens collected from the Grand Banks to Baffin Bay in the Northwest Atlantic were used to examine the distribution, morphometrics, meristics and maturity of two siblings, Amblyraja hyperborea and A. jenseni. Our study confirmed that the two species occupy different locations, their distributions separated by Davis Strait, a biogeographic break separating Atlantic from Arctic waters. A. hyperborea with a smaller maximum size and size at maturity inhabited colder Arctic slope waters in Baffin Bay while larger A. jenseni were located in warmer Atlantic slope waters. Despite their distributional separation and thus reproductive isolation, spine counts and body morphology were almost indistinguishable between species. Only upper jaw teeth row count and difference in the size of spines on the mid-rear wings differentiated the two species. Also, for both species, the proportion of dorsal fins joined, disc shape and relative tail length changed with total length. Secondary reproductive anatomy, clasper length and vas deferens weight, shell gland and uterus weight underwent initial acceleration in growth when the gonads transitioned to stage 2 (adolescent, maturing). Also, YOY A. hyperborea were found to distribute at shallower depths than larger stages, constituting a nursery, which was not observed for A. jenseni.

Chinese sturgeon (Acipenser sinensis) is an endangered species, and the Yangtze River Estuary is an important migration channel for this species. With the scale of Chinese sturgeon restocking along the Yangtze River gradually increasing, an increasing number of artificially bred Chinese sturgeon will come to the estuary. It is urgent to make the first insights about the distribution characteristics and migration strategy of the endangered Chinese sturgeon in the Yangtze River Estuary available. So, to balance the need for information about this endangered species and its conservation, a total of 14 Chinese sturgeons were released in the waters near Chongming Island on 9 April 2021 and 20 October 2022, and 50% of them have been successfully recovered. The data demonstrated that Chinese sturgeon had a good migration ability in the Yangtze River Estuary and its adjacent waters. One sturgeon returned to the freshwater area of the estuary after spending approximately 46 days in the sea at a maximum depth of 54.5 m, and two sturgeons returned to the Yangtze River mainstream within 3.5 days after release. We propose that the Northern Channel of the estuary may be the main passway for Chinese sturgeon to undertake the river–sea migration. The bycatch data of Chinese sturgeon showed that this species may prefer the southern area of the estuary. We hypothesize that the food resources and salinity regime are the main factors that promote Chinese sturgeon to enter the shoals around the coast of Chongming Island. The ocean currents, river runoff, salinity, and food resource may affect the distribution of Chinese sturgeon along the Chinese coast. Future work on the conservation of Chinese sturgeon should focus on the marine life history and continuously enrich the research data to improve conservation strategies.

Pyrops candelaria is one of the common pests of fruit trees, but the research on the pathogenic microorganisms it may carry is very limited. Therefore, it is essential to reveal the pathogenic microbes it carries and their potential hazards. This study found a new virus from the transcriptome of P. candelaria, which was first reported in P. candelaria and named PyCaV (Pyrops candelaria associated virus). RACE and bioinformatics assay revealed that the full length of PyCaV is 10,855 bp with the polyA tail, containing a single open-reading frame (ORF) encoding a polyprotein consisting of 3171 amino acid (aa). The virus has a typical iflavirus structure, including two rhv domains, an RNA helicase domain (HEL), a 3C cysteine protease domain (Pro), and an RNA–dependent RNA polymerase domain (RdRp). Further phylogenetic analysis revealed that this virus belongs to family Iflaviridae and sequence alignments analysis suggested PyCaV is a new member in an unassigned genus of family Iflaviridae. Further in-depth analysis of the virus infection showed that PyCaV is distributed throughout the whole P. candelaria, including its head, chest, and abdomen, but more PyCaV was identified in the chest. The distribution of PyCaV in different parts of P. candelaria was further explored, which showed that more PyCaV was detected in its piercing–sucking mouthparts and chest viscera. Statistical analysis showed that the PyCaV infection was affected by time and location.

Aedes mosquitoes play a pivotal role as vectors of several arboviral diseases, presenting significant public health challenges worldwide. Their invasive success in tropical regions has raised substantial medical concerns. In Guatemala, Aedes mosquitoes are widely distributed and are the primary vectors of the dengue virus. Efforts to control and monitor Aedes populations have evolved over time, incorporating strategies such as spatial repellents, larvicides, genetic modifications, and targeted interventions. Previous research has shown the heterogeneous spatial-temporal distribution of these mosquitoes within each season, influenced by temperature variations and favorable environmental conditions for breeding. This study analyzed hot-spot patterns of spatiotemporal egg density in Santa Elena de la Cruz, Petén, Guatemala, from March to September 2022. The aim was to determine whether these patterns were influenced by non-residential larval habitats with plant cover that are not treated by healthcare entities, as well as the proximity between such habitats. Our findings include the collection and registration of over 16,000 Aedes eggs during the study period. Local analyses revealed hot-spot patterns in egg densities associated with non-residential larval habitats and their proximity. These insights highlight critical focal points where targeted interventions could be implemented more effectively, resulting in cost-efficient mosquito vector control.

Mediterranean countries are a cauldron of cultural exchange, with a strong emphasis on wild plants in cuisine traditions. Many of these plants belong to the family Apiaceae. The common climate determines the common range of distribution. While many plants have wide distribution, the range of distribution of others is restricted to Western Mediterranean or North Africa. This review investigates wild plants from the family Apiaceae traditionally used as food in 13 study sites—11 countries in the Mediterranean and adjacent territories—the mainland and 3 islands. The aim is to trace patterns of native distribution versus consumption. As a result, 81 wild umbellifers are listed, traditionally used as food. Their consumption and distribution patterns are described and discussed. Interestingly in 8 of the 13 study sites (61.5%) are recorded 50 plant taxa (66.7% of all wild umbellifers, traditionally used as food) which are consumed in only one particular country. These are as follows: 8 taxa in Morocco, 9 taxa in Spain, 2 taxa in Sicily, 3 taxa in Bulgaria 3 taxa in Crete, 8 taxa in Armenia, 14 taxa in Turkey, and 3 taxa in Jordan. However, these 50 restrictedly consumed plants are distributed in more than one country (except 15 taxa, which are endemics). Many of the plants that are used in certain countries are not consumed by the neighboring people. The results of the two statistical tests, namely Jaccard index and heatmap clustering (double dendrogram), are discussed. The presence of an outlier, such as Bulgaria, which shares borders, history, and culture with Greece and Turkey, emphasizes the importance of local climate for plant distribution and consumption over cultural interactions. The same was observed for some pairs of countries, such as Spain and Morrocco and Turkey and Armenia, although they had the highest number of common plants that are both distributed and consumed as food.

Given the problems such as insufficient control on pests and diseases or pesticide damage on plants caused by uneven distribution of pesticide droplets during the current application process by UAVs, this paper designed novel uniform application equipment with nozzles swinging horizontally based on a UAV platform in order to improve the distribution uniformity of droplets volume. Nozzles swinging periodically are able to increase the overlap probability of spray fans generated from nozzles. It is helpful to further the spray deposition uniformity improvement. Through droplet motion analysis, CFD simulation, and spray tests, it was determined that the key factors affecting uniformity were the oscillating rod length, spray height, and nozzle angle. The best parameter combination was explored as the length of 175 mm, the height of 1.5 m, and the angle of 15°. Based on this combination, the prototype was produced and installed on the UAV platform. A field test was carried out to verify its performance. The results showed that the CV of the improved UAV was 26.41%, which was 6.43 percentage points lower than the traditional UAV, and the decrease was 19.58%, meaning that it is feasible to use this equipment to improve uniformity.

The melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) gene plays a central role in regulating energy homeostasis and food intake in livestock, thereby affecting their economic worth and growth. In a previous study, the p.T117M mutation in the sheep MC4R gene, which leads to the transition of threonine to methionine, was found to affect the body weight at six months and the average daily gain in Hu sheep. However, there are still limited studies on the frequency of the sheep p.T117M missense mutation globally, and the underlying cellular mechanism remains elusive. Therefore, this study first used WGS to investigate the distribution of the MC4R gene p.T117M mutation in 652 individuals across 22 breeds worldwide. The results showed that the mutation frequency was higher in European breeds compared with Chinese sheep breeds, particularly in Poll Dorset sheep (mutation frequency > 0.5). The p.T117M mutation occurs in the first extracellular loop of MC4R. Mechanistically, the basal activity of the mutated receptor is significantly increased. Specifically, upon treatment with α-MSH and ACTH ligands, the cAMP and MAPK/ERK signaling activation of M117 MC4R is enhanced. These results indicate that the T117M mutation may change the function of the gene by increasing the constitutive activity and signaling activation of cAMP and MAPK/ERK, and, thus, may regulate the growth traits of sheep. In conclusion, this study delved into the global distribution and underlying cellular mechanisms of the T117M mutation of the MC4R gene, establishing a scientific foundation for breeding sheep with superior growth, thereby contributing to the advancement of the sheep industry.

Hard ticks (Ixodidae) play a critical role in transmitting various tick-borne diseases (TBDs), posing significant global threats to human and animal health. Climatic factors influence the abundance, diversity, and vectorial capacity of tick vectors. It is imperative to have a comprehensive understanding of hard ticks, pathogens, eco-epidemiology, and the impact of climatic changes on the transmission dynamics of TBDs. The distribution and life cycle patterns of hard ticks are influenced by diverse ecological factors that, in turn, can be impacted by changes in climate, leading to the expansion of the tick vector’s range and geographical distribution. Vector competence, a pivotal aspect of vectorial capacity, involves the tick’s ability to acquire, maintain, and transmit pathogens. Hard ticks, by efficiently feeding on diverse hosts and manipulating their immunity through their saliva, emerge as competent vectors for various pathogens, such as viruses, parasites and bacteria. This ability significantly influences the success of pathogen transmission. Further exploration of genetic diversity, population structure, and hybrid tick vectors is crucial, as they play a substantial role in influencing vector competence and complicating the dynamics of TBDs. This comprehensive review deals with important TBDs in India and delves into a profound understanding of hard ticks as vectors, their biology, and the factors influencing their vector competence. Given that TBDs continue to pose a substantial threat to global health, the review emphasizes the urgency of investigating tick control strategies and advancing vaccine development. Special attention is given to the pivotal role of population genetics in comprehending the genetic diversity of tick populations and providing essential insights into their adaptability to environmental changes.

The river valley forests of the Irtysh River Basin are a germplasm bank of Salicaceae species and rare plant resources in China, and the distribution varies with the river and is highly distinctive. However, there is a dearth of systematic research on the characteristics of plant resources. In this study, a comprehensive investigation was conducted in the trunk stream and six tributaries with valley forest distribution in the Irtysh River Basin, and 244 quadrats were set up. The analysis focused on the composition of the flora and resource characteristics. The results reveal the following: (1) The valley forests of the Irtysh River Basin contain 256 species of plants belonging to 57 families and 178 genera, among which 19 species of trees, 23 species of shrubs, and 214 species of herbs were investigated. (2) Among the identified species, 226 (88.67%) were recognized as resource plants, with medicinal plants being the most abundant (176 species, 68.75% of the total). (3) The distribution patterns of trees, shrubs, and herbs of each resource type vary across rivers. Elevation drop, river length, and river distance all significantly affect the number of specie. This study elucidated the current status and distributional characteristics of plant resources in the valley forests of the Irtysh River Basin, which is essential for both biodiversity conservation and sustainable resource utilization.

The rodents of Saudi Arabia consist of twenty species and twelve genera within four families (Gliridae, Dipodidae, Muridae, and Hystricidae). Details on the past and present distribution of the rodents were included, along with available data on their habitat preference and biology. The eastern central part of Saudi Arabia, covering the Tuwiq mountains plateau, including the vicinity of Riyadh, hosts the highest number of rodent species. An analysis of the rodent fauna of Saudi Arabia revealed that they have four major zoogeographical affinities: Palaearctic–Oriental (one species), Afrotropical–Palaearctic (six species), Palaearctic (four species), endemic to Saudi Arabia and Yemen (three species), Afrotropical–Palaearctic–Oriental (three species), and three cosmopolitan species. According to the National Red List, the Euphrates Jerboa, Scarturus euphraticus, is listed as endangered, the Indian Crested Porcupine, Hystrix indica, as near threatened, three further species as data-deficient, while the rest are considered least concern.

Muscle spindles have unique anatomical characteristics that can be directly affected by the surrounding tissues under physiological and pathological conditions. Understanding their spatial distribution and density in different muscles is imperative to unravel the complexity of motor function. In the present study, the distribution and number/density of muscle spindles in human and animal muscles were reviewed. We identified 56 articles focusing on muscle spindle distribution; 13 articles focused on human muscles and 43 focused on animal muscles. The results demonstrate that spindles are located at the nerve entry points and along distributed vessels and they relate to the intramuscular connective tissue. Muscles’ deep layers and middle segments are the main topographic distribution areas. Eleven articles on humans and thirty-three articles on animals (totaling forty-four articles) focusing on muscle spindle quantity and density were identified. Hand and head muscles, such as the pronator teres/medial pterygoid muscle/masseter/flexor digitorum, were most commonly studied in the human studies. For animals, whole-body musculature was studied. The present study summarized the spindle quantity in 77 human and 189 animal muscles. We identified well-studied muscles and any as-yet unfound data. The current data fail to clarify the relationship between quantity/density and muscle characteristics. The intricate distribution of the muscle spindles and their density and quantity throughout the body present some unique patterns or correlations, according to the current data. However, it remains unclear whether muscles with fine motor control have more muscle spindles since the study standards are inconsistent and data on numerous muscles are missing. This study provides a comprehensive and exhaustive approach for clinicians and researchers to determine muscle spindle status.

The broad global distribution of freshwater clams belonging to the genus Corbicula is driven by multiple hermaphroditic lineages. These lineages, characterized by shared morphological traits and phenotypic plasticity, pose challenges to morphological identification. Genetic markers, such as the mitochondrial COI gene, play a crucial role in delineating these lineages and their ranges. Morphotypes represent observed phenotypic variations, while lineages are defined based on genetic markers. Here, we comprehensively review Corbicula’s distribution in Argentina, discriminate extant lineages based on both morphological and genetic (COI) data, and describe variations in internal and external morphologies using 15 Argentine populations. Genetic analyses identified two mitochondrial lineages: the AR morphotype (FW5 haplotype) and CS morphotype (FW17 haplotype). Strikingly, despite having similar vectors, origins, and invasive stages, Corbicula lineages exhibit virtually segregated distributions. However, mitochondrial haplotypes are found in sympatry mainly in northeastern Argentina where individuals with intermediate morphotypes exist, suggesting the presence of hybrids due to maternal genome retention. These findings contribute to the clarification of the identity and distribution of Corbicula lineages in Argentina, where the genus has been found for over half a century. Similar studies are needed in other areas to better understand the invasion patterns of this successful and adaptable group.

It has been known that harvesting by humans strongly influences individual within-home range habitat selection of many deer species; however, little is known about the effect of harvesting on coarse-scale habitat selection (i.e., spatial distribution). We examined the summer spatial distribution of sika deer Cervus nippon in relation to human harvesting and other factors, such as human residences, forage abundance, and cover, using pellet group counts at Mount Fuji, central Japan, in 2018. In the study area, harvesting is conducted at medium elevation areas throughout the year, but not at high or low elevation areas where access is difficult or harvesting is prohibited. Spatial distribution of deer was significantly biased to non-harvesting areas and far from residential areas, suggesting that they avoid riskier spaces by establishing a landscape of fear. High-quality food resources (deciduous broad-leaved trees and forbs) were more abundant in harvesting areas than in non-harvesting areas, suggesting that foraging pressure by deer reduce them. However, there were no differences in abundances of more fibrous dwarf bamboo between harvesting and non-harvesting areas, and spatial distribution of deer was significantly biased to higher dwarf bamboo abundance areas, suggesting that the dwarf bamboo is an alternative food resource in non-harvesting areas where supplies of high-quality food were limited. Our results suggest that human harvesting pressure and residences shifted the spatial distribution of deer from the montane forests to subalpine/alpine zones, which may increase damage to vulnerable ecosystems due to severe foraging pressure.

In a rail transit system, there is a constant leakage of current from the subway rails to the earth, and these stray currents have complex propagation paths and a wide range of influence. Since no stray current collection devices are installed at subway depots, some of the stray current leaking from the mainline will converge at the depot, seriously corroding the structural reinforcement and buried metal of the station, thereby jeopardizing the normal operation of subway trains and passenger safety. In this paper, a field-circuit coupling method is proposed to analyze the current leakage and distribution law of the subway mainline and depot. It is found that the failure of the gauge block at the mainline will trigger the maximum leakage of rail current. Additionally, it is observed that the stray current distribution at the depot is mainly influenced by the operating status of the one-way conduction device (OWCD) and the change of rail potential. These results validate the applicability and effectiveness of the field-circuit coupling method proposed in this paper and provide new technical support for the study of stray current leakage distribution in subways.

Low-cadmium (Cd) accumulating wheat cultivars (LAWC-Cds) can effectively reduce the total Cd content in wheat grains (Grain-Cd). Thirteen LAWC-Cds were planted in three fields to study the enrichment, transport, and accumulation patterns of Cd in LAWC-Cds. Compared with the soil properties before planting, the soil pH and the total Cd content in the soil decreased, while the Cd content in the diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid extract, soil conductivity, and soil organic matter increased at wheat maturity. The Cd enrichment capacity of the different organs of wheat decreased in the following order: root > leaf > rachis > stem > glume > grain. The dynamics of Cd accumulation in roots affected Grain-Cd, and these factors were negatively correlated. The Cd content and Cd accumulation in all organs of LAWC-Cds showed strong negative correlations with the lengths of the first and second internodes and highly significant positive correlations with both grains per spike and awn length. Structural equation modeling showed that the Cd content of wheat organs had the most direct effect (0.639) in determining Grain-Cd, and soil properties had the largest effect (0.744) in influencing Grain-Cd. This study is important for screening wheat cultivars with stable low Cd-accumulation characteristics.

We study an online distribution problem in which a producer has to send a load from an origin to a destination. At each time period before the deadline, they ask for transportation price quotes and have to decide to either accept or not accept the minimum offered price. If this price is not accepted, they have to pay a penalty cost, which may be the cost to ask for new quotes, the penalty cost for a late delivery, or the inventory cost to store the load for a certain duration. The aim is to minimize the sum of the transportation and the penalty costs. This problem has interesting real-world applications, given that transportation quotes can be obtained from professional websites nowadays. We show that the classical online algorithm used to solve the well-known Secretary problem is not able to provide, on average, effective solutions to our problem, given the trade-off between the transportation and the penalty costs. Therefore, we design two classes of online algorithms. The first class is based on a given time of acceptance, while the second is based on a given threshold price. We formally prove the competitive ratio of each algorithm, i.e., the worst-case performance of the online algorithm with respect to the optimal solution of the offline problem, in which all transportation prices are known at the beginning, rather than being revealed over time. The computational results show the algorithms’ performance on average and in the worst-case scenario when the transportation prices are generated on the basis of given probability distributions.

Scientific reports on the distribution of Mesocentrotus nudus in Hokkaido are limited from Cape Soya to Cape Erimo along the coast of the Sea of Japan; however, fishery statistics show that its distribution has extended to the Sea of Okhotsk and Pacific Ocean off Hokkaido. In 2021, large-scale harmful algal blooms (HABs) occurred in the Pacific Ocean off eastern Hokkaido, resulting in the massive die-off of marine organisms, including M. nudus. This study aimed to redefine the distribution of M. nudus in the Pacific Ocean off eastern Hokkaido after the HABs. Field surveys were conducted in July, August, and December 2023 in Akkeshi, the site farthest from Cape Soya among the areas where irregular catches of M. nudus have been recorded in eastern Hokkaido, and the distribution of this species was confirmed in August and December. All sea urchins collected were >6 years of age, indicating that they survived the HABs. High gonad indices and spermatozoa-filled gonads were observed in the sea urchins collected in December, suggesting that the reproductive cycle of M. nudus in Akkeshi may be close to that observed in specimens off Wakkanai, Cape Soya. Warming trends may cause population increases in the future.

A total of 205 tardigrades representing two orders, five families, nine genera and ten species were extracted from a moss sample (104 tardigrades) and a lichen sample (101 tardigrades) collected near Missoula, Montana, in 2016. Three of the species are new to Montana and one is new to science, Platicrista loloensis nov. sp., which is distinguished by its smooth cuticle, the presence of internal cuticular bars at the base of the claws of legs II and III and a median cuticular bar between the claws of leg IV.

This study investigates the distribution, morphology, and potential functions of antennal sensilla in various wasp species, including Dolichovespula flora, D. intermedia, Vespula structor, Vl. vulgaris, Provespa barthelemyi, Vespa bicolor, V. ducalis, V. mocsaryana, and V. velutina var. nigothorax. The study thoroughly analyzes the antennal structure of these species, representing all four genera of the yellow-jacket and hornet subfamily Vespinae. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the study identifies a total of nineteen types of sensilla, including sensilla trichodea (ST-I, ST-II, ST-III), sensilla campaniform (SCF-I, SCF-II, SCF-III), pit organs (SCO-I, SCO-II, and SA), sensilla placodea (SP-I, SP-II), sensilla chaetica (SCH-I, SCH-II), sensilla basiconica (SB-I, SB-II), sensilla agmon (SAG-I, SAG-II), and sensilla coelocapitular (SCA). Additionally, tyloids were observed in the males of seven species, except for Vl. structor and Vl. vulgaris. The study provides insights into these sensilla types’ morphology, abundance, and distribution. It discusses the variations in sensilla morphology among different species and the presence of gender-specific sensilla. This study provides new data about the morphology and distribution patterns of sensilla and tyloid.

Mineralization characterized by Au, Hg, and Tl enrichment is rare, and research on Au, Hg, and Tl mineralization is limited. The Lanmuchang Au–Hg–Tl deposit is located in the “Golden Triangle” of Yunnan, Guizhou, and Guangxi Provinces in China. In this study, we used scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron microprobe analysis (EPMA), and a Tescan integrated mineral analyzer (TIMA) to analyze the mineral composition and distribution of the different types of ores and identify the occurrence state and enrichment mechanism of ore-forming elements in the Lanmuchang deposit. The results show that the primary ore minerals in the Lanmuchang deposit are pyrite, cinnabar, and lorandite. Cinnabar is the primary carrier of Hg (>90%), and pyrite is the primary carrier of Tl (>60%). Gold, Hg, and Tl primarily occur as solid solutions in hydrothermal pyrite, whereas they primarily occur as nano-scale particles in diagenetic pyrite. The substitution of As for S in hydrothermal pyrite promotes Au enrichment. The coupled substitution of 2Fe2+ ⇔ Tl+ + As3+ may be a significant Tl incorporation mechanism and promotes the occurrence of Hg in pyrite. The As and Se contents and Cu/Au and Co/Ni ratios of the hydrothermal pyrite demonstrate that the ore-forming fluid was mostly in a low-temperature, low-salinity, almost-neutral pH, and nearly reducing environment. The results show that the mineralization of the Lanmuchang deposit is associated with the cooling, oxidation, water–rock interaction, and boiling processes of the ore-forming fluid(s).

According to modern concepts, the genus Hyssopus L. includes seven plant species (Hyssopus ambiguus (Trautv.) Iljin ex Prochorov. & Lebel; Hyssopus cuspidatus Boriss; Hyssopus latilabiatus C.Y.Wu & H.W. Li; Hyssopus macranthus Boriss.; Hyssopus officinalis L.; Hyssopus seravschanicus (Dubj.) Pazij; Hyssopus subulifolius (Rech.f.) Rech.f.). The plants are rich in various groups of biologically active substances with a wide spectrum of pharmacological action. This review presents a modern comprehensive overview of the botanical research, extraction methods, chemical composition and pharmacological activity of plants of the genus Hyssopus L. As a result of the review, it was established that the chemical composition of plant extracts of the genus Hyssopus L. depends on various factors (place of growth, weather conditions, chemotypes, extraction methods, etc.). For the further use of the plants, the extraction methods and low-molecular metabolites isolated from them (mono- and sesquiterpenoids, flavonoids, alkaloids, etc.) are discussed. The data from the review provide an assessment of the relevance.

Microplastics are widely present worldwide and are of great concern to scientists and governments due to their toxicity and ability to serve as carriers of other environmental pollutants. The abundance of microplastics in different water bodies varied significantly, mainly attributed to the initial emission concentration of pollutants and the migration ability of pollutants. The migration process of microplastics determines the abundance, fate, and bioavailability of microplastics in water. Previous studies have proved that the physicochemical properties of water bodies and the properties of microplastics themselves are important factors affecting their migration, but the change in external environmental conditions is also one of the main factors controlling the migration of microplastics. In this paper, we focus on the effects of meteorological factors (rainfall, light, and wind) on the distribution and migration of microplastics and conclude that the influence of meteorological factors on microplastics mainly affects the inflow abundance of microplastics, the physical and chemical properties of water, and the dynamics of water. At the same time, we briefly summarized the effects of aquatic organisms, water substrates, and water topography on microplastics. It is believed that aquatic organisms can affect the physical and chemical properties of microplastics through the physical adsorption and in vivo transmission of aquatic plants, through the feeding behavior, swimming, and metabolism of animals, and through the extracellular polymers formed by microorganisms, and can change their original environmental processes in water bodies. A full understanding of the influence and mechanism of external environmental factors on the migration of microplastics is of great theoretical significance for understanding the migration law of microplastics in water and comprehensively assessing the pollution load and safety risk of microplastics in water.

Chytridiomycota (zoosporic true fungi) have a consistent presence in soils and have been frequently identified within many diverse terrestrial environments. However, Chytridiomycota and other early-diverging fungi have low representation in whole-genome sequencing databases compared to Dikarya. New molecular techniques have provided insights into the diversity and abundance of chytrids in soils and the changes in their populations both spatially and temporally. Chytrids complete their life cycle within rapidly changing soil environments where they may be more common within micropores due to protection from predation, desiccation, and extreme temperatures. Reproductive and morphological changes occur in response to environmental changes including pH, fluctuating nutrient concentrations, and metals at levels above toxic thresholds. Rhizoids share some features of hyphae, including the spatial regulation of branching and the ability to attach, adapt to, and proliferate in different substrates, albeit on a microscale. Soil chytrids provide a pool of novel enzymes and proteins which enable a range of lifestyles as saprotrophs or parasites, but also can be utilised as alternative tools with some biotechnological applications. Thus, 3D live-cell imaging and micromodels such as MicroCT may provide insight into zoospore functions and rhizoid plasticity, respectively, in response to various conditions. A combination of classical techniques of soil chytrid baiting with simultaneous molecular and ecological data will provide insights into temporal population changes in response to environmental change. The authors emphasise the need to review and improve DNA-based methodologies for identifying and quantifying chytrids within the soil microbiome to expand our knowledge of their taxonomy, abundance, diversity, and functionality within soil environments.

The taxonomy of the family Mugilidae has historically posed challenges, marked by discrepancies between described and valid species, compounded by cryptic diversity and a similar external appearance. Previous studies left four of six lineages unidentified within Crenimugil, including Crenimugil sp. A and Crenimugil sp. B. The goal of this study is to provide a detailed revision of species assigned to Crenimugil by examining specimens from the Red Sea, which is the type locality of Mugil crenilabis, Mugil seheli and Mugil tade, which were here genetically analyzed. After demonstrating that the genus contains nine monophyletic lineages and Moolgarda pura is a valid nominal species, the mugilid genus Moolgarda is restored. Consequently, Moolgarda has priority over Crenimugil and Valamugil. Additional morphological analyses of specimens from the Red Sea assigned to Moolgarda sp. A and Moolgarda sp. B identified them as representing Moolgarda seheli and Moolgarda crenilabis, respectively. A phylogenetic analysis, including new DNA barcodes, confirmed a wide distribution range of both species in the Indo-West Pacific. The identity of the lineage previously identified as Crenimugil crenilabis remains doubtful, and it is referred to as Moolgarda cf. crenilabis here. A third lineage, previously named Crenimugil buchanani, is re-described as Moolgarda tade, a species originally reported from the Red Sea with a long history of taxonomic confusion. The species is widely distributed in the Indo-West Pacific and distinguished from other congeners by falcate second dorsal and anal fins that are distinctly higher than the first dorsal fin. A detailed description of the Red Sea specimens of M. crenilabis, M. seheli and M. tade is provided, with comments to other unnamed lineages.

To compare the environmental space of four Anastrepha species in different ENSO episodes (El Niño, El Neutro and La Niña), we built ecological niche models with NicheA software. We analysed the fundamental niche and the combined establishment risk maps of these species developed with the ArcGisPro combine geoprocess. A comparison of the ellipsoids that represent the fundamental niche existing for the species showed changes in the El Niño, El Neutro and La Niña episodes. For A. grandis in the El Niño vs. El Neutro episodes, there was a Jaccard index of 0.3841, while the comparison between the La Niña vs. El Neutro episodes presented a Jaccard index of 0.6192. A. serpentina in the El Niño vs. El Neutro and La Niña vs. El Neutro episodes presented Jaccard indices of 0.3281 and 0.6328, respectively. For A. obliqua, the comparison between the El Niño vs. El Neutro and La Niña vs. El Neutro episodes presented Jaccard indices of 0.3518 and 0.7472, respectively. For A. striata, comparisons between the episodes of El Niño vs. El Neutro and La Niña vs. El Neutro presented Jaccard indices of 0.3325 and 0.6022, respectively. When studying the comparison between Anastrepha species and the different ENSO climatic episodes, we found that in the El Niño episode, the comparisons with the best environmental similarity were A. obliqua vs. A. striata and A. obliqua vs. A. serpentina, with higher Jaccard indices (0.6064 and 0.6316, respectively). In the El Neutro episode, the comparisons with the best environmental similarity were A. serpentina vs. A. striata and A. obliqua vs. A. striata, which presented higher Jaccard indices (0.4616 and 0.6411, respectively). In the La Niña episode, the comparisons that presented the best environmental similarity were A. obliqua vs. A. serpentina and A. obliqua vs. A. striata, with higher Jaccard indices (0.5982 and 0.6228, respectively). Likewise, our results present the risk maps for the establishment of these species throughout the Neotropics, allowing us to predict the level of risk in order to develop integrated pest management plans.

Bone Strain Index (BSI), based on dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), is a densitometric index of bone strength of the femur and lumbar spine. Higher BSI values indicate a higher strain applied to bone, predisposing to higher fracture risk. This retrospective, multicentric study on Italian women reports the BSI normative age-specific reference curves. A cohort of Caucasian Italian women aged 20 to 90 years was selected from three different clinical centres. Bone mineral density (BMD) and BSI measurements were obtained for the lumbar spine vertebrae (L1–L4) and for the femur (neck, trochanter and intertrochanter) using Hologic densitometers scans. The data were compared with BMD normative values provided by the densitometer manufacturer. Then, the age-specific BSI curve for the femur and lumbar spine was generated. No significant difference was found between the BMD of the subjects in this study and BMD reference data provided by Hologic (p = 0.68 for femur and p = 0.90 for lumbar spine). Spine BSI values (L1–L4) increase by 84% between 20 and 90 years of age. The mean BSI of the total femur increases about 38% in the same age range. The BSI age-specific reference curve could help clinicians improve osteoporosis patient management, allowing an appropriate patient classification according to the bone resistance to the applied loads and fragility fracture risk assessment.

The distribution and diversity of calanoid copepods were investigated using samples collected from 37 lakes in North-eastern (NE) China in 2019. A total of 10 calanoid copepods belonging to eight genera and three families were identified. Among them, Heterocope soldatovi Rylov, 1922 was recorded for the first time in China. Species from the family Centropagidae were more widespread than those from the families Temoridae and Diaptomidae. Sinocalanus doerrii (Brehm, 1909), previously not recorded in NE China, is now widespread alongside Boeckella triarticulata (Thomson G.M., 1883), and the latter species is also prevalent in that region. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) and redundancy analysis (RDA) revealed that calanoid copepods were significantly correlated with total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen, conductivity, nitrate nitrogen, altitude, and dissolved organic carbon. TP was the most important environmental variable that impacted the distribution of calanoid copepods, including both fresh and saline–alkaline lakes. Integrating historical records, a total of 21 calanoid copepods were distributed in NE China, and we also gave comments on the ecology and distribution of these species.

Background: The current manuscript’s aim was to determine the human papillomavirus (HPV) genotype-specific prevalence and distribution among individuals, males, and females, of different ages in the region of Apulia, Italy, highlighting the possible variables involved in the carcinogenicity mechanism. In addition, we proposed two hypothetical models of HPV’s molecular dynamics, intending to clarify the impact of prevention and therapeutic strategies, explicitly modeled by recent survey data. Methods: We presented clinical data from 9647 participants tested for either high-risk (HR) or low-risk (LR) HPV at the affiliated Bari Policlinic University Hospital of Bari from 2011 to 2022. HPV DNA detection was performed using nested-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and multiplex real-time PCR assay. Statistical analysis showed significant associations for all genders and ages and both HR- and LR-HPV types. A major number of significant pairwise associations were detected for the higher-risk types and females and lower-risk types and males. Results: The overall prevalence of HPV was 50.5% (n-4.869) vs. 49.5% (n-4.778) of the study population, of which 74.4% (n-3621) were found to be HPV high-risk (HR-HPV) genotypes and 57.7% (n-2.807) low-risk HPV (LR-HPV) genotypes, of which males were 58% and females 49%; the three most prevalent HR-HPV genotypes were HPV 53 (n707-15%), 16 (n704-14%), and 31 (n589-12%), and for LR-HPV, they were 42 (19%), 6 (16%), and 54 (13%); 56% of patients screened for HPV were ≤ 30 years old, 53% were between 31 and 40 years old, 46% were 41–50 and 51–60 years old, and finally, 44% of subjects were >60 years old. Conclusions: Our study provided comprehensive epidemiological data on HPV prevalence and genotype distribution among 9647 participants, which could serve as a significant reference for clinical practice, and it implied the necessity for more effective screening methods for HPV carcinogenesis covering the use of more specific molecular investigations. Although this is a predominantly descriptive and epidemiological study, the data obtained offer not only a fairly unique trend compared to other studies of different realities and latitudes but also lead us to focus on the HPV infection within two groups of young people and adults and hypothesize the possible involvement of dysbiosis, stem cells, and the retrotransposition mechanism.

Coccoid Ulvophyceae are often overlooked despite their wide distribution. They occur as epiphytes on marine seaweeds or grow on stones or on shells of mussels and corals. Most of the species are not easy to identify based solely on morphology. However, they form two groups based on the flagellated cells during asexual reproduction. The biflagellated coccoids are monophyletic and represent the genus Sykidion (Sykidiales). In contrast, the quadriflagellated taxa are polyphyletic and belong to different genera and orders. The newly investigated strains NIES-1838 and NIES-1839, originally identified as Halochlorococcum, belong to the genus Chlorocystis (C. john-westii) among the order Chlorocystidales. The unidentified strain CCMP 1293 had almost an identical SSU and ITS-2 sequence to Symbiochlorum hainanense (Ignatiales) but showed morphological differences (single chloroplast, quadriflagellated zoospores) compared with the original description of this species (multiple chloroplasts, aplanospores). Surprisingly, the strain SAG 2662 (= ULVO-129), together with the published sequence of MBIC 10461, formed a new monophyletic lineage among the Ulvophyceae, which is highly supported in all of the bootstrap and Bayesian analyses and approximately unbiased tests of user-defined trees. This strain is characterized by a spherical morphology and also form quadriflagellated zoospores, have a unique ITS-2 barcode, and can tolerate a high variation of salinities. Considering our results, we emend the diagnosis of Symbiochlorum and propose the new genus Solotvynia among the new order Solotvyniales.

Using the liverwort Hygrobiella laxiflora as an example, this study aims to investigate the impact of climate change on montane species and their ecosystems. The study area is the Elbe Sandstone Mountains in Germany and the Czech Republic, where Hygrobiella laxifolia has an isolated occurrence in deeply carved gorges characterized by a specific microclimate (cellar climate). The focus is on determining the rate at which populations are affected. After little change in the population over a long period, a sudden sharp decline has been observed in recent years. The decline correlates with the mass proliferation of the European spruce bark beetle (Ips typographus) observed since 2017, which has led to a strong thinning of the forests in the area. In many areas of occurrence, the forests now have a much sparser tree layer or none at all. Competition from other, more competitive species also plays an important role as a cause of decline, as these have spread more widely on the sites due to the now higher light levels. The severe bark beetle infestation and the large-scale forest fire of 2022 both represent events that led to the almost complete deforestation of large parts of the study area, which was previously unknown on this scale. Since both the bark beetle infestation and the forest fire are strongly intensified by climate change, we assume that climate change is the main reason for the decline of Hygrobiella laxifolia in the area. The populations of Hygrobiella laxifolia of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains show some morphological peculiarities. As two new species have recently been described within Hygrobiella, we have integrated a sample from the area into a molecular phylogeny of Hygrobiella based on the plastid sequences of trnL-trnF intergenic spacer and matK to clarify the relationships. The sample from Elbe Sandstone Mountains fits well into the clade of Hygrobiella laxifolia.

Tick-borne diseases result from human–ixodid tick encounters, making it crucial to understand host–ixodid tick interactions and host-dependent distribution for epidemiology and prevention. This study examines water deer patterns and ixodid tick interactions in designated croplands of South Korea over two years, finding that the highest deer presence occurred in July and the lowest in May, during crop harvesting. Four tick species were identified, with Haemaphysalis longicornis being predominant (92.2%). Tick life stage analysis revealed peak nymphs and adults in July and larvae in October. Nymph abundance correlated positively with nearby water deer. MaxEnt biodiversity prediction results indicated wider water deer distribution in summer, reflecting their tendency to use multiple croplands. Areas with nymphs and adults aligned with predicted deer presence in summer, while larval areas aligned in autumn. Increased agroforestry expanded water deer habitats, enhancing tick dispersion. Prevention involved minimizing human–deer encounters by strategic land use in tick-prone areas. This comprehensive study provides insights into preventing severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome in agricultural workers, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions based on host behavior and tick life stages in different seasons.

The vast potential of high-resolution satellite images, including Kompsat-3A, has been demonstrated across diverse applications, such as mapping and disaster monitoring. However, these images can only be utilized as reliable GIS (geographic information system) data when they possess precise geographical information. To achieve this, sensor model information, represented by RPCs (rational polynomial coefficients), requires bias compensation through GCPs (ground control points). Though having a substantial number of well-distributed GCPs across satellite images is ideal, the acquisition process is often restricted due to cost and inaccessibility. The uniform distribution of GCP chips is not guaranteed, necessitating an investigation into the impact of GCP distribution on the bias compensation process, which is the focus of this study. Experiments were meticulously conducted using Kompsat-3A data using dense GCP information. The dense GCP information was automatically generated from aerial orthoimages through a three-step process. Firstly, the GCP chips were extracted from the aerial images, focusing on feature points. Secondly, these chips were projected onto the target Kompsat-3A data to align them accurately. Lastly, precise satellite image coordinates of the chips were obtained through image matching between the chips and the target Kompsat-3A image. The dense GCPs enabled detailed bias analysis that exhibited skewness in most Kompsat-3A data. This necessitates the implementation of an affine model for proper bias compensation over the entire image space. Next, the study delved into the influence of GCP distribution on RPC bias compensation. To this end, each target satellite image space was divided into nine zones, with the dense GCPs assigned accordingly. The accuracy of bias compensation was analyzed across nine experimental cases, ranging from GCPs occupying only one zone to GCPs covering all nine zones. It was observed that GCPs covering at least four or five zones should be utilized for reliable RPC bias compensation of Kompsat-3A, especially when aiming for a high level of accuracy with an RMSE of one pixel. Finally, it was concluded that GCPs covering three zones yielded satisfactory results as a minimum GCP requirement, but this was contingent upon their distribution not following a straight zone pattern.

Fusarium basal rot (FBR) places a significant limitation on Allium production worldwide. The damage caused by the disease can be observed throughout the entire crop cycle. This research aimed to further our understanding of the impact of FBR on the cultivation of onions (Allium cepa) in northeast Israel. It focused on studying the composition and incidence of Fusarium species involved in disease outbursts in two representative fields, one in Galilee (Hula Valley) and the second in the Golan Heights, where the disease incidences reached 8%. Using colony morphology, microscopic taxonomic keys, and molecular methods, a new, unreported Neocosmospora (previously Fusarium solani) species complex (SC, mostly N. falciformis) was discovered as a wildly spread member of the Fusarium pathobiome community. This species complex appeared more generalist in its nature since it was found in all three onion cultivars’ samples. It was also less virulent in seed germination (42–52% higher sprout biomass, p < 0.05) and bulb pathogenicity tests (41–45% less necrotic) than Fusarium acutatum. Whereas the Galilee yellow Orlando (Riverside) onion cultivar bulbs sampled were colonized by Neocosmospora SC (70%) and two other, less abundant species, F. oxysporum f. sp. cepae and F. acutatum (15% each), the Golan Heights field’s Fusarium community showed host specificity. In the Golan Heights field, F. oxysporum f. sp. cepae inhabited the red Ha2 onion cultivar bulbs, whereas F. acutatum colonized the yellow Ha1 cultivar (40% and 50% prevalence along with Neocosmospora SC). A better understanding of the complexity of this disease caused by different Fusarium species and with a divergence in host susceptibility and virulence is critical for developing disease management strategies. Since each Fusarium species reacts differently to pest control treatments, changes in the species composition may require specifically adapted management solutions.

To ensure the security of highly sensitive remote sensing images (RSIs) during their distribution, it is essential to implement effective content security protection methods. Generally, secure distribution schemes for remote sensing images often employ cryptographic techniques. However, sending encrypted data exposes communication behavior, which poses significant security risks to the distribution of remote sensing images. Therefore, this paper introduces deep information hiding to achieve the secure distribution of remote sensing images, which can serve as an effective alternative in certain specific scenarios. Specifically, the Deep Information Hiding for RSI Distribution (hereinafter referred to as DIH4RSID) based on an encoder–decoder network architecture with Parallel Attention Mechanism (PAM) by adversarial training is proposed. Our model is constructed with four main components: a preprocessing network (PN), an embedding network (EN), a revealing network (RN), and a discriminating network (DN). The PN module is primarily based on Inception to capture more details of RSIs and targets of different scales. The PAM module obtains features in two spatial directions to realize feature enhancement and context information integration. The experimental results indicate that our proposed algorithm achieves relatively higher visual quality and secure level compared to related methods. Additionally, after extracting the concealed content from hidden images, the average classification accuracy is unaffected.

Based on our own field data and using modeling of modern potential ranges (in the MaxEnt program), an assessment of the spatial distribution of the rare representative of the longhorn beetle family, Callipogon (Eoxenus) relictus Semenov 1899, was conducted in northeast Asia (220 geographic locations). The generated maps of the potential range of C. relictus demonstrate a high likelihood of the species’ presence in the upland areas of southern far east Russia, the provinces of northeastern China, and the Korean Peninsula. Field data also indicate the extensive association of the species with undisturbed broadleaf and coniferous–broadleaf forests in northeast Asia. Maps of the potential distribution of C. relictus in northeast Asia have been compiled based on four climate change scenarios from the present time to 2070. Under all of the climate scenarios used, it is shown that suitable habitats for the species will persist in certain areas of Primorsky Krai, as well as neighboring provinces of the People’s Republic of China and a small enclave on the Korean Peninsula in Gangwon-do province. Significant reduction in suitable conditions for the rare longhorn beetle will occur in the rest of its distribution range.
