The catastrophic failure of two dams in Libya on 10 and 11 September 2023 resulted in the devastating flooding of the city of Derna, which is located downstream of the dams, causing more than 6000 fatalities and displacing thousands of residents. The failure was attributed to heavy rainfall from Storm Daniel, leading to the dams reaching full capacity and subsequently overflowing and failing. This paper presents an analysis of the dam break, including the modelling of flow discharge and the resulting flooding of Derna. For validation purposes, this study compares the modelled quantities with post-event satellite imagery from UNOSAT and Copernicus, local reports, and data collected from social media using AI detection. The findings provide valuable insights into the dynamics of the dam break and its initial parameters, as well as an assessment of the accuracy of the results. The analysis is performed using a rapid estimation technique developed by JRC to provide the international emergency community with a swift overview of the impact and damage assessment of potential or actual dam break events. The use of all available data shows a satisfactory comparison with the calculated quantities. The rapid modelling of dam break events and combined analysis of multiple data types are proven suitable for promptly assessing the expected dynamic of the event, as well as reconstructing the unknown initial conditions before the break. Incorporating sensitivity analyses provides an estimate of the uncertainties associated with the deduced values of the unknown parameters and their relative importance in the analysis.

Coal mining in the Loess Plateau can very easily generate ground cracks, and these cracks can immediately result in ventilation trouble under the mine shaft, runoff disturbance, and vegetation destruction. Advanced UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) high-resolution mapping and DL (Deep Learning) are introduced as the key methods to quickly delineate coal mining ground surface cracks for disaster prevention. Firstly, the dataset named the Ground Cracks of Coal Mining Area Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (GCCMA-UAV) is built, with a ground resolution of 3 cm, which is suitable to make a 1:500 thematic map of the ground crack. This GCCMA-UAV dataset includes 6280 images of ground cracks, and the size of the imagery is 256 × 256 pixels. Secondly, the DRA-UNet model is built effectively for coal mining ground surface crack delineation. This DRA-UNet model is an improved UNet DL model, which mainly includes the DAM (Dual Dttention Dechanism) module, the RN (residual network) module, and the ASPP (Atrous Spatial Pyramid Pooling) module. The DRA-UNet model shows the highest recall rate of 77.29% when the DRA-UNet was compared with other similar DL models, such as DeepLabV3+, SegNet, PSPNet, and so on. DRA-UNet also has other relatively reliable indicators; the precision rate is 84.92% and the F1 score is 78.87%. Finally, DRA-UNet is applied to delineate cracks on a DOM (Digital Orthophoto Map) of 3 km2 in the mining workface area, with a ground resolution of 3 cm. There were 4903 cracks that were delineated from the DOM in the Huojitu Coal Mine Shaft. This DRA-UNet model effectively improves the efficiency of crack delineation.

The Chesapeake Logperch, Percina bimaculata, is a small fish endemic to the upper Chesapeake Bay drainage with a range significantly reduced by water quality and habitat degradation. It was described by Haldeman in 1842 and 1844 from the Susquehanna River, Pennsylvania, synonymized with the Logperch (Percina caprodes) by Jordan in 1877, and redescribed by Near in 2008. It is extirpated from the Potomac River drainage and extant in a portion of its historic range within the Susquehanna River drainage of Pennsylvania and Maryland in the United States of America. We reviewed available historic field survey information and defined the likely extent of the historic distribution of P. bimaculata and its change in response to historic environmental perturbations. We performed fisheries surveys during 2004–2023 to fill data gaps and to define the current distribution and abundance in the Susquehanna River drainage within Pennsylvania. Our surveys utilized electrofishing gears, electrified benthic trawls, and seines. Our surveys targeting P. bimaculata on the Susquehanna River and tributaries from York Haven to Holtwood, Pennsylvania, combined with available fisheries surveys conducted by others, confirm it was extirpated from that portion of the drainage. We documented the continued usage of Conowingo Pond, Susquehanna River, and tributaries below Holtwood by populations known to exist in historic field surveys. These populations appear to have been stable since at least the 1960s based on historic data and our current surveys. We documented previously unknown populations in the Octoraro Creek drainage, Octoraro Reservoir, and Muddy Run Pumped Storage Facility. Habitat utilization observations during our surveys indicate that clean sand, gravel, rubble, boulders, and large woody debris are preferred substrates. In the lower Susquehanna River and two tributaries, P. bimaculata has demonstrated a plasticity of habitat usage by continuing to occur in environments converted into impoundments by dams. In these impoundments, shorelines and connections with clean tributaries containing preferred substrates appear to be important given their utilization by P. bimaculata during our surveys. It is our opinion that the Susquehanna River and tributaries above Holtwood once again constitute suitable habitats. Conservation efforts focused on reintroductions, water quality, habitat, and connectivity have the potential to increase the extent of occurrence, abundance, and security of P. bimaculata.

The microbial biomass in soil is an active and living constituent of organic matter. It is both a storage pool and a source of plant nutrients that can be used as required. In addition, each microbial indicator evaluates soil quality and health from different perspectives, which are not necessarily very different. This study was conducted to compare some physical, chemical, and biochemical characteristics of the soils of forest (SF) and deforested (SDE) areas located on the slopes of the Kirazlıköprü area, which was previously deforested due to dam construction in Bartın province in northwestern Turkey. Soil samples were taken from the topsoil surface (0–5 cm) to determine the microbial soil characteristics of the SF and SDE sites. The soil microbial biomass N (Nmic) was determined by chloroform fumigation extraction, and the Cmic/Nmic ratio and Nmic/Ntotal percentage were calculated using the original values. Total N, Nmic and Cmic/Nmic values are higher in the forest area. The lowest and highest total N (Ntotal) contents in the SF and SDE soils varied between 1.50 and 3.47 g kg−1 and 0.91 and 1.46 g kg−1, respectively. Similarly, the Nmic contents of the SF and SDE soils varied between 75.56 and 143.42 μg g−1 and 10.40 and 75.96 μg g−1, respectively. A statistical analysis revealed that the mean Ntotal and mean Nmic values differed (p < 0.05) in the SF and SDE soils. The mean Cmic/Nmic values in the SF and SDE soils were 8.79 (±1.65) and 5.64 (±1.09), respectively, and a statistical difference was found between the fields (p < 0.05). Our findings indicate that the soil microbial community structure varies according to the site. As a result, it can be concluded that deforestation and erosion due to dam construction in the area led to the removal of plant nutrients from the soil; deterioration in the amount and activity of microbial biomass; and, consequently, soil losses and degradation of soil quality.

Throughout history, the implementation of structural health monitoring systems has played a crucial role in evaluating the responses of dams to environmental and human-induced threats. By continuously monitoring structural integrity and analyzing dynamic characteristics, these systems offer a robust alternative to traditional visual inspection methods, ensuring the long-term safety of dams. This paper delves into the intricate process of operational modal analysis applied to dams, encompassing data collection, preprocessing, and the utilization of diverse modal identification techniques across both time and frequency domains. Moreover, it explores innovative approaches aimed at overcoming challenges encountered in previous methodologies. Also, the evolution of automated modal identification techniques and their application in dams are investigated. It explores the advancements in this field and their implications for enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of modal analysis processes. Furthermore, this paper evaluates the effectiveness of damage detection methods in dams based on operational modal identification.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) has emerged as a transformative force in the construction industry, gaining traction within the hydropower sector. This study critically examines the adoption and application of BIM throughout the entire lifecycle of hydropower projects, addressing a notable gap in existing research, to encompass a holistic approach to the management and resilience of these critical infrastructures. The objective is to delineate the comprehensive range of BIM applications, use cases, and adoption, integrating technologies including Digital Twin, UAV, GIS, and simulation tools, across components of hydropower projects. Employing a systematic search paired with a critical review of the selected literature, this study meticulously evaluates significant contributions in this domain. Through thematic analysis, the multifaceted utility of BIM in hydropower structures, including an in-depth evaluation of its current adoption within the industry, is presented. This encompasses an analysis of both benefits and challenges inherent in BIM implementation for hydropower infrastructures. This study is a significant contribution to understanding how BIM can be leveraged to enhance the resilience of hydropower infrastructures. It provides a comprehensive view of BIM’s applications, challenges, and future potential, guiding stakeholders in adopting strategies that ensure these structures withstand, adapt, and recover from disruptions while maintaining sustainable and efficient operations.

This paper addresses the problem of removing 3D effects as one of the most challenging problems related to 2D electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) monitoring of embankment structures. When processing 2D ERT monitoring data measured along linear profiles, it is fundamental to estimate and correct the distortions introduced by the non-uniform 3D geometry of the embankment. Here, I adopt an iterative 3D correction plus 2D inversion procedure to correct the 3D effects and I test the validity of the proposed algorithm using both synthetic and real data. The modelled embankment is inspired by a critical section of the Parma River levee in Colorno (PR), Italy, where a permanent ERT monitoring system has been in operation since November 2018. For each model of the embankment, reference synthetic data were produced in Res2dmod and Res3dmod for the corresponding 2D and 3D models. Using the reference synthetic data, reference 3D effects were calculated to be compared with 3D effects estimated by the proposed algorithm at each iteration. The results of the synthetic tests showed that even in the absence of a priori information, the proposed algorithm for correcting 3D effects converges rapidly to ideal corrections. Having validated the proposed algorithm through synthetic tests, the method was applied to the ERT monitoring data in the study site to remove 3D effects. Two real datasets from the study site, taken after dry and rainy periods, are discussed here. The results showed that 3D effects cause about ±50% changes in the inverted resistivity images for both periods. This is a critical artifact considering that the final objective of ERT monitoring data for such studies is to produce water content maps to be integrated in alarm systems for hydrogeological risk mitigation. The proposed algorithm to remove 3D effects is thus a rapid and validated solution to satisfy near-real-time data processing and to produce reliable results.

Dams play a vital role as a primary water supply for irrigation in Jordan, necessitating an assessment of their water quality. This study aimed to evaluate the suitability of irrigation water in a key number of Jordanian dams, namely Al Kafrain, Al Waala, King Talal (KTD), Mujib, Shuaib, and Sharhabil. Monthly readings of major water parameters (EC, Cl−, SO42−, HCO3−, Na+, Ca2+, and Mg2+) were recorded for seven years (2015–2021) for each dam. The assessment criteria included the sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), soluble sodium percentage (SSP), residual sodium carbonate (RSC), magnesium adsorption ratio (MAR), kelley ratio (KR), total hardness (TH), and water quality index (WQI) using both average (APL) and maximum permissible limits (MPL). Additionally, USSL, Wilcox, Doneen, Piper, and Gibbs diagrams were applied. The findings indicate that all the dams demonstrated suitability for irrigation based on the SAR, SSP, RSC, MAR, and KR values. The USSL diagrams showed most samples falling under C2S1 and C3S1, except KTD, which fell under C3S2. According to the Wilcox diagram, the water was either Excellent to Good or Good to Permissible, while the KTD water was classified as Permissible to Doubtful. Furthermore, the water chemistry was found to be mainly influenced by rock weathering, as revealed in the Gibbs diagram, and has no restriction on permeability, according to the Doneen diagram. The WQI showed that all the dams fall in the Good and Excellent category for irrigation using APL, while applying MPL, all the dams were in the Excellent category, which demonstrates the necessity of considering extreme events and regulatory thresholds.

Estimation of the potential consequences from events occurring downstream of a dam is part of the risk assessment needed during the installation phase of a new dam. In the case of specific natural or man-made ongoing or prospected events, it may also be important to carry out fast computations that can provide information on the areas at risk either because the original design analyses are not available or because the parameters needed are different. This study aimed to develop a procedure that strongly facilitates the preparation of the input deck and the derivation of the output quantities to allow a fast analysis of a dam break event using a shallow water model, NAMI DANCE, as the analysis tool. The analysis shows that in a few minutes, it is possible to obtain the input deck for a new case. This makes it possible to include the prospected methods into automatic routines in analytical tools such as the Global Disasters Alerts and Coordination System (GDACS) to have a quick overview of the expected flood due to a dam break event.

The present study examined temporal variations in water and sediment discharges in the Red River basin from 1958 to 2021 resulting from climate change and anthropogenic factors, with projections extended to 2100. The 64-year observational period was divided into five distinct stages: 1958–1971 (Stage I: natural conditions); 1972–1988 (Stage II: onset of human activities); 1989–2010 (Stage III: post Hoa Binh dam construction); 2011–2016 (Stage IV: series of new dam constructions); and 2017–2021 (Stage V: combined effects of human activities and climate change). Attribution analysis revealed that human activities accounted for 62% and 92% of the dramatic declines in sediment loads in Stages III and IV, respectively. Projection results of fluvial sediment loads over an approximate 150-year timeframe (1958–2100) indicate an overriding impact from human activities. Climate change projections based on four scenarios (−5%, +5%, +10%, and +15% change per year) suggest associated decreases or increases in river flows. This study predicts that projected 21st century increases in river flow attributable to climate change will offset up to eight percent of the human-induced sediment load deficit.

An important aspect of economic considerations is the routing and safety of hydraulic storage facilities such as dams for extreme probable water flooding. The routing of dam reservoirs requires more attention for determining the magnitude of extreme probable flooding. Apparently, the type of structure, importance, and economic development of the surrounding area guide the routing criteria for choosing the extreme flood magnitude. The Maithan and Panchet Dams in India have faced several major floods with diversified magnitudes since 1978. The present study aims to estimate the storage and routing of extreme probable floodings for these two dams based on real-time flood data like inflow, outflow, and elevation for the extreme flood years of 1978, 2009, and 2014. Reservoir storages at different elevations are calculated from the initial storage volumes. For both reservoirs, discharge equations are derived and calculated at given elevations during extreme floods. The Modified Puls technique is used for routing extreme floods. At the end of each extreme flood in 1978, 2009, and 2014, the variation in outflow discharges at different elevations and flood hydrographs is predicted. Finally, estimated outflow discharges are compared with the actual outflow discharges for the given inflows during extreme floods. Using this approach, extreme floods that occurred in 1978 are predicted with less than 10% error. Outcomes from this study may help in the future planning and routing of flood-control detention facilities and in predicting the variation in outflow discharges at different elevations. Based on this work, alternative studies and regional drainage planning can also be carried out.

Timely release of flow from upstream hydropower generation facilities on the Peace River can enhance potential ice-jam flooding near the drying Peace–Athabasca Delta (PAD), a Ramsar wetland of international importance and homeland to Indigenous Peoples. An important consideration in deciding whether and when to commence a release is the celerity of the breakup front as it advances along the Peace River. Relevant historical data for a key stretch of the river are analyzed to determine average celerities, which can vary by an order of magnitude from year to year. Seven breakup events are identified that might have been candidates for a release, and the predictability of associated celerities is explored in terms of antecedent hydroclimatic variables, including cumulative winter snowfall, snow water equivalent on 1 April, ice cover thickness, coldness of the winter, and freezeup level. It is shown that celerity can be predicted to within a factor of two or less, with the freezeup level giving the best results. Three of the seven “promising” events culminated in PAD floods and were associated with the three highest celerities. The empirical findings are shown to generally align with physical understanding of breakup driving and resisting factors.

Slant range geometry plays a crucial role in interpreting synthetic aperture radar (SAR) observations, especially in converting line-of-sight (LOS) surface deformations to actual vertical subsidence. This paper proposes a new conversion model to retrieve vertical settlements of the embankment slopes using the geometrical parameters of the dam and the SAR sensor. The simulation results highlight the impact of slope foreshortening and heading direction of the satellite on deformation retrieval. Various SAR data with different resolutions and bands are used to analyze the model’s performance, revealing a high conformity of the model with practical conversion parameters exceeding 80% for TerraSAR-X and Cosmo-SkyMed data.

Pensacola Dam, operated by the Grand River Dam Authority (GRDA), is a multiple-arch buttress dam constructed in 1940. The dam has little or no existing geophysical reports on the integrity of the dam foundation rock and even less knowledge at depth. Visual inspection indicated evidence of seepage at some arches of the dam. As a pilot study, we conducted a suite of geophysical surveys inside two arches (Arch-16 and Arch-17) and a part of the downstream berm to characterize the dam foundation rock, delineate seepage zones, and identify the most appropriate geophysical methods for temporal monitoring of the dam’s conditions. The geophysical methods included electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), self-potential (SP), multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW), compressional (P)-wave refraction, and shear (S)-wave reflection. Water samples were collected for geochemical analysis to investigate the source of the seepage flow inside Arch-16. The geophysical results characterized the dam foundation rock into an unsaturated limestone and chert overlying a water-saturated limestone and chert. The ERT profiles indicated that groundwater is rising inside the arches and significantly dropping under the downstream berm, which can be due to the uplift pressure beneath the dam base. Zones of high seepage potential were detected near the buttress walls of the two surveyed arches, which may be related to previous blasting, excavation of the dam foundation, concrete placement, or improper grouting. The geochemical analysis of water samples taken from the artesian wells inside Arch-16 and the Grand Lake revealed different chemical compositions, suggesting that the source of water could be a mixture of groundwater and lake water or lake water interacting with rock and reaching the surface through fractures; however, more sampling and further analysis are required to ascertain the source of the seeps. This study showed that the ERT, SP, and S-wave reflection methods have effectively characterized the dam foundation rock and seepage zones beneath the arches. The study provided a better understanding of the conditions of the dam foundation rock, evaluated the utilized geophysical methods, and determined the optimum geophysical methods that can be used for the characterization and monitoring of the subsurface conditions along the entire length of the dam. In this study, we have demonstrated that the integration of effective geophysical surveys and geochemical analysis yielded optimum results in solving a complex dam safety problem. This strategy promotes the best practice for dam safety investigation.

The Xiaolangdi Dam is a key project for the control and development of the Yellow River. It bears the functions of flood control, controlling water and sediment in the lower reaches, ice prevention, industrial and agricultural water supply, power generation, and so on. Its safety is related to people’s life and property safety and local economic and social development. It is of great significance to carry out comprehensive and regular deformation monitoring for dams since the deformation is an important evaluation index for dam safety. Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technology has been a rapidly evolving technology in the field of space geodesy in recent years. It offers advantages such as high monitoring precision, extensive coverage, and high monitoring point density, making it a powerful tool for monitoring deformations in hydraulic engineering projects. Based on Sentinel-1 data covering the Xiaolangdi Dam from September 2020 to November 2022, the PS-InSAR technique was used to obtain the surface deformation of the Xiaolangdi Dam, and reservoir water level data on image acquisition dates were obtained for joint analysis. The results show that there is a large deformation in the center of the dam crest of the Xiaolangdi Dam, while both sides of the slope and downstream dam foot are relatively stable. The time series deformation of the dam body is closely related to the reservoir water level change. When the water level increases, the dam body tends to deform downstream; when the water level decreases, the dam body tends to deform upstream. The deformation and water level of the Xiaolangdi Dam exhibit a clear negative correlation. There is no significant cumulative deformation on the dam slopes or at the base of the dam. However, cumulative deformation occurs over time in the central area of the dam’s crest. The deformation process at the central area of the dam’s crest follows a continuous and non-disruptive pattern, which is consistent with the typical deformation behavior of the Xiaolangdi earth–rock dam structure. Therefore, it is judged that the current deformation of the Xiaolangdi Dam does not impact the safe operation of the dam. InSAR technology enables the rapid acquisition of high-precision, high-density deformation information on the surfaces of reservoir dams. With an increasing number of radar satellites in various frequency bands, such as Sentinel-1 and TerraSAR-X, there is now an ample supply of available data sources for InSAR applications. Consequently, InSAR technology can be extended to routine monitoring applications for reservoir dam deformations, especially for small and medium-sized reservoirs that may not be equipped with ground measurement tools like GNSS. This holds significant importance and potential for enhancing the safety monitoring of such reservoirs.

Erosional incidents have heightened the necessity of studies regarding rock mass erosion in unlined dam spillways. Enhanced comprehension of hydraulic erodibility necessitates an investigation into the geomechanical and hydraulic aspects of erosional phenomena. Controlled blasting is commonly employed to establish unlined spillways in rock masses, and this process results in irregularities along the spillway surface profile. Recent research has identified key geometric parameters of rock masses that impact erosion in unlined spillways, such as joint opening, dip and dip direction, and joint spacing. However, the effect of spillway surface irregularities on hydraulic parameters remains uncertain. Numerous studies have examined the surface roughness of rock at the millimeter scale within the domain of hydraulic engineering. Despite these efforts, a noticeable gap persists in our understanding of how surface irregularities specifically exert influence over hydraulic parameters. Currently, there is a lack of a clear equation or methodology to incorporate irregularities into hydraulic erosive parameters. The main aim of this study is to show how such irregularities affect the hydraulic parameters. This study is dedicated to emphasizing the importance of considering these irregularities. Building upon the findings obtained, the core aim of this research is to facilitate the formulation of an equation in future investigations that effectively accounts for these irregularities when calculating hydraulic erosive parameters. To assess the significance of surface irregularities in unlined spillways, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with ANSYS-Fluent software was employed to analyze 25 configurations of spillway surface irregularities and their effects on various factors, including pressure (total, dynamic, and static pressures), shear stress, flow velocity, and energy. The findings indicated that irregularities significantly influenced the hydraulic parameters. Specifically, an increased irregularity height led to a decrease in maximum velocity, total pressure, and shear stress. Conversely, total energy loss increased, amplifying the rock mass’s vulnerability to erosion due to these irregularities.

A few drugs need non-aqueous gels for release in the specific region of the intestine. The present work focuses on preparing N,N-Dimethyl acrylamide-Diallyl Maleate (DMAA-DAM) gel in Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solvent by applying different doses of gamma radiation and then characterization. The blend solution of 10%: 10%—DMAA: DAM was prepared in DMSO and irradiated at 2, 5, 10, 20, and 30 kGy doses from the Co-60 gamma source. After extraction, it was observed that all of the radiation doses yielded more than 95% gel content. The best gel content was found for 10 kGy dose, which was 97%. The equilibrium swelling was optimized 1800% of the dried gel for 5 kGy dose. Gel formation was confirmed by analyzing characteristic functional groups and the environment of protons in the gel structure by using FTIR and NMR spectroscopy. The thermal stability was tested using DSC and TGA which showed the glass transition temperature at 86.55 °C and the degradation started at 320 °C. The XRD pattern analysis revealed the semi-crystalline nature of the gel. Therefore, DMAA-DAM gels can be a good candidate for use in different fields of study, especially in drug delivery.

Bacterial virulence, persistence and defence are affected by epigenetic modifications, including DNA methylation. Solitary DNA methyltransferases modulate a variety of cellular processes and influence bacterial virulence; as part of a restriction-modification (RM) system, they act as a primitive immune system in methylating the own DNA, while unmethylated foreign DNA is restricted. We identified a large family of type II DNA methyltransferases in Metamycoplasma hominis, comprising six solitary methyltransferases and four RM systems. Motif-specific 5mC and 6mA methylations were identified with a tailored Tombo analysis on Nanopore reads. Selected motifs with methylation scores >0.5 fit with the gene presence of DAM1 and DAM2, DCM2, DCM3, and DCM6, but not for DCM1, whose activity was strain-dependent. The activity of DCM1 for CmCWGG and of both DAM1 and DAM2 for GmATC was proven in methylation-sensitive restriction and finally for recombinant rDCM1 and rDAM2 against a dam-, dcm-negative background. A hitherto unknown dcm8/dam3 gene fusion containing a (TA) repeat region of varying length was characterized within a single strain, suggesting the expression of DCM8/DAM3 phase variants. The combination of genetic, bioinformatics, and enzymatic approaches enabled the detection of a huge family of type II DNA MTases in M. hominis, whose involvement in virulence and defence can now be characterized in future work.

Most dams in China have been operating for a long time and are products of the economic and technical limitations at the time of construction. Due to decades of aging engineering and ancillary problems, these reservoirs pose great threats to the safety of local people and the development of the surrounding economy. In this study, the surface deformation information for the Banqiao Reservoir is monitored with the small baseline subset–synthetic aperture radar interferometry (SBAS-InSAR) method using 80 Sentinel-1A images acquired from 3 January 2020 to 20 August 2022. Additionally, ground measurements from the BeiDou ground-based deformation monitoring stations were collected to validate the InSAR results. Based on the InSAR results, the spatiotemporal deformation features of the dam were analyzed in detail. The results show that the deformation in most areas, including the dam in the study area, is relatively stable, and the regional deformation velocity of the Banqiao Reservoir dam and other hydraulic engineering facilities varies between −1 mm/y and −4 mm/y. The Ru River area has a relatively obvious subsidence trend, and the maximum subsidence velocity reaches 30 mm/y. The InSAR monitoring results are consistent with the change trend in the BeiDou ground-based deformation measurement results. The monitoring results for the reservoir dam area provide a reference for local sustainable development and geological disaster prevention.

This paper presents an innovative digital twin dam and watershed management platform, K-Twin SJ, that utilizes real-time data and simulation models to support decision-making for flood response and water resource management. The platform includes a GIS-based geospatial digital twin of the entire Sumjin dam and river water system in Korea, with high-precision geospatial topography and facility information for dams and rivers (watershed area 4913 km2, river length 173 km, and 91 water infrastructures). The platform synchronizes real-time data such as rainfall, dam and river water levels, flow rate, and closed-circuit television (CCTV), and incorporates three hydraulic and hydrological simulation models for efficient dam operation considering the river conditions. AI technology is also used to predict the river water level and suggest optimal dam discharge scenarios. Additionally, the platform includes a geotechnical safety evaluation module for river levees, advanced drone monitoring for dams and rivers, and an AI CCTV video surveillance function. The digital-twin-based platform supports efficient decision-making for smart flood responses and contributes to reducing flooding damage and optimal operation through better smart water management.

The safety operation of dams after extreme load is an important frontier research topic in the field of dam engineering. The dam health monitoring provides a reliable data basis for a safety evaluation after extreme loads. This study proposes a novel data-driven fusion model for a dam safety evaluation after extreme load based on monitoring data derived by sensors. First, the relationship between dam environmental quantity and effect quantity is deeply excavated based on bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) network, which is a deeply improved LSTM model. Aiming at the parameter optimization problem of BiLSTM model, sparrow search algorithm (SSA), which is an advanced optimization algorithm, is integrated. Second, conducting the constructed SSA-BiLSTM model to estimate the change law of dam effect quantity after the extreme load. Finally, the Mann–Whitney U-test theory is introduced to establish the evaluation criterion of the dam safety state. Project case shows that the multiple quantitative prediction accuracy evaluation indicators of the proposed method are significantly superior to the comparison method, with mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) and mean absolute error (MAE) values decreasing by 30.5% and 27.8%, respectively, on average. The proposed model can accurately diagnose the dam safety state after the extreme load compared with on-site inspection results of the engineering department, which provides a new method for dam safety evaluation.

The main purpose of chat robots is to realize intelligent interaction between human beings and chat robots. Generally, a complete conversation involves chat contexts. Before responding, human beings need to extract information from their chat contexts, and human beings are very good at extracting information. However, how to make the chatbots more complete in extracting appropriate contextual information has become a key issue for the chatbots in multi-round dialogues. Most research in recent years has paid attention to the point-to-point matching of responses and utterances at reciprocal granularity, such as SMN (Sequential Matching Network) and DAM (Deep Attention Matching Network), for which these parsing methods affect the effectiveness of the above networks to some extent. For example, DAM introduces an attention mechanism, which can obtain good results by parsing five levels of granularity of response and utterance through a self-attention module, and then matching the same level of granularity to mine similar spatial information in it. Based on the structure of DAM, this paper proposes an information-mining idea for improving DAM, which applies to those models with a multi-layer matching structure. Therefore, based on this idea, this paper presents two improved methods for DAM, so as to improve the accuracy of the information extraction from the contexts of the multiple round chats. The experiments show that the improved DAM has better results than that of the unimproved DAM, which are, respectively, R_2@1 increased by 0.425%, R_10@1 increased by 0.515%, R_10@2 increased by 0.341%, MAP (Mean Average Precision) increased by 0.358% in Douban data set, P@1 increased by 1.16%, R_10@1 increased by 1.17%, and these results are better than those state-of-the-art methods, and the improved methods presented in this paper can be used not only in DAM but also in other models with similar the point-to-point matching structures.

A long-term (1933–2022) record of water level (WL) fluctuations in Lake Kinneret was reviewed. The dependence of the Kinneret WL management on climate change (flood–dryness alternate), dam and National Water Carrier (NWC) constructions constrained by water availability and domestic supply demands were indicated. A short-term range of maximal WL decline of 4–6 m and 4.6–6.5% of the total surface area of lake water shrinkage in Lake Kinneret was documented. Nevertheless, incomparably longer periods and higher amplitudes of WL decline accompanied by a dramatic shrinking of the water surface were documented in Lake Tchad, the Aral Sea and Lake Sivan (SAT). Therefore, the comparative results of WL decline in Lake Kinneret and in other lakes as SAT are not justified.

A hardfill dam can reduce the natural damage caused by the development of quarries and recycle submerged resources. However, the particle size distribution of the aggregate can result in large variations in the mix design, resulting in a wide range of strengths in the hardfill dam body. Therefore, quality control during construction is crucial, and the stability of the dam body after construction should be thoroughly examined in advance. This study investigated the strength characteristics of hardfill dam materials according to the particle size and mixing ratio through indoor uniaxial compressive strength tests using large specimens and uniaxial compressive strength tests for field compaction and collected cores. Furthermore, the stability of hardfill dams with three types of slopes during earthquakes was evaluated through a finite element analysis. The distributions of stress in the hardfill dam body and the strength required to stabilize the dam body were investigated. Except for a 1:0.6 inclined hardfill dam body to which artificial seismic waves were applied, the overall strength range calculated from the indoor specimens and field compaction cores exceeded the required hardfill strength, thereby ensuring stability in the event of an earthquake.

The impact of the damming of the Sava river for the Brežice hydroelectric power plant on the rise of the groundwater level was studied in the intergranular aquifer of the Krško field and the Vrbina area, Slovenia. The study is based on the application of hydrogen and oxygen isotopes (18O, 2H and 3H). Parameters were determined for precipitation, surface water, and groundwater for periods before and after the filling of the accumulation basin, with the aim of evaluating the groundwater–surface water interaction and to elucidate the impact of the hydroelectric dam on aquifer recharge processes. The results show the proportions of the surface water component in groundwater sampled from four wells at high and low water conditions, separately for the period before and after the filling the accumulation basin. After filling the accumulation basin, the proportion of the Sava river component at high water conditions increased from 60% to 80% in the Brege and Drnovo wells (drinking water resources), from 50% to 80% in the Cerklje well and to almost 100% in the near-river NEK well. Combined with previous studies, the results provide important information about the direction of groundwater flow in the aquifer and improve the conceptual model of the study site.

Dam impoundment can cause many adverse impacts on fish assemblages upstream of dams. Here, we investigated fish diversity in one plateau riverine reservoir (Wanfeng Reservoir) using environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding technology. The following conclusions were drawn: (1) 39 species of fish were monitored belonging to 9 orders and 13 families in the Wanfeng Reservoir, most of which were Cypriniformes and included a variety of common farmed fish belonging to Culter, Oreochromis, Acipenser, and Clarias; (2) the fish assemblage structures in the Up (upstream section), Mid (midstream section), and RA (reservoir area section) of this reservoir was significantly different (p-value < 0.01); (3) among the 7 environmental variables that were measured (Tem, TDS, Sal, pH, DO, NH4+, and Tra), DO (p-value < 0.01) and pH (p-value < 0.05) were the main environmental stressors causing differences in fish assemblages in different sites of the Wanfeng Reservoir. This study concluded that dam construction in the karst region provided habitats for the establishment and dispersal of exotic fish.

This paper examines whether lime can be used for the drainage of cohesive soils built into hydraulic engineering embankments. It is a common practice, as early as the planning stage, to seek to reduce costs and accelerate work while maintaining the quality of work. Although lime stabilisation is not currently a widely used solution in the hydraulic engineering sector, it can play an important role in the future. Lime stabilisation can be considered an optimal solution as it shortens the embankment construction by eliminating the need to replace the soil when it is over-wet. This paper investigates whether it is possible to apply lime treatment in the forming of hydraulic engineering embankments as well as analyses the efficiency of mechanical soil drainage and compares it against chemical drainage (lime stabilisation) based on the example of the construction of the Szalejów Górny dry flood control reservoir located in south-western Poland. It presents the results of geotechnical investigations carried out during the construction phase and compares them with cases reported in the literature. The observation of the construction process reveals a high efficiency and effectiveness of quicklime (CaO) as a stabiliser in the soil used for reservoir dams. Adoption of this technology made it possible to achieve significantly higher embankment formation rates (max. approx. 14,000 m3/week) than when mechanical drainage was used (max. approx. 11,000 m3/week). It was also noted that the lime stabilisation process was significantly independent of unfavourable weather conditions, resulting in frequent high weekly efficiencies. Geotechnical tests on samples of the lime-stabilised soil built into the dam body confirmed the possibility of obtaining favourable strength parameters, particularly with regard to the angle of internal friction, cohesion and degree of plasticity. Therefore, it can be expected that lime will be used more widely in the formation of hydraulic engineering embankments and that soil stabilisation technology will be applied more frequently.

Label-free quantitative proteomic (LFQ) and widely targeted metabolomic analyses were applied in the safety evaluation of three genetically modified (GM) maize varieties, BBL, BFL-1, and BFL-2, in addition to their corresponding non-GM parent maize. A total of 76, 40, and 25 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were screened out in BBL, BFL-1, and BFL-2, respectively, and their abundance compared was with that in their non-GM parents. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis showed that most of the DEPs participate in biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, biosynthesis of amino acids, and metabolic pathways. Metabolomic analyses revealed 145, 178, and 88 differentially accumulated metabolites (DAMs) in the BBL/ZH58, BFL-1/ZH58, and BFL-2/ZH58×CH72 comparisons, respectively. KEGG pathway enrichment analysis showed that most of the DAMs are involved in biosynthesis of amino acids, and in arginine and proline metabolism. Three co-DEPs and 11 co-DAMs were identified in the seeds of these GM maize lines. The proteomic profiling of seeds showed that the GM maize varieties were not dramatically different from their non-GM control. Similarly, the metabolomic profiling of seeds showed no dramatic changes in the GM/non-GM maize varieties compared with the GM/GM and non-GM/non-GM maize varieties. The genetic background of the transgenic maize was found to have some influence on its proteomic and metabolomic profiles.

Floods control equipment in large dams is one of the most important requirements in hydraulic structures. Howell–Bunger valves and butterfly valves are two of these types of flow controls that are commonly used in bottom outlet dams. The optimal longitudinal distance (L) between the two Howell–Bunger and butterfly valves is such that the turbulence of the outlet flow from the butterfly valve should be dissipated before entering the outlet valve. Subsequently, the flow passing through the butterfly valves must have a fully developed flow state before reaching the Howell–Bunger valve. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the optimal longitudinal distance between the Howell–Bunger and butterfly valves. For this purpose, different longitudinal distances were investigated using the Flow-3D numerical model. The ideal longitudinal distance obtained from the numerical model in the physical model was considered and tested. Based on the numerical study, the parameters of flow patterns, velocity profiles and vectors, turbulence kinetic energy, and formation of flow vorticity were investigated as criteria to determine the appropriate longitudinal distance. In addition, the most appropriate distance between the butterfly valve and the Howell–Bunger valve was determined, and the physical model was evaluated based on the optimal distance extracted from the numerical simulation. A comparison of the results from the numerical and the laboratory models showed that the minimum distance required in Howell–Bunger valves and butterfly valves should be equal to four times the diameter of the pipe (L=4D) so as not to adversely affect the performance of the bottom outlet system.

The progressing development of civilisation and climate change require access to an appropriate quantity of environmental resources. One of the key resources is water. Both its deficit and excess evidently affect human life. Control over water circulation is possible owing to water management, largely involving introduction of hydraulic structures. The paper analyses the effect of the Jeziorsko dam reservoir on the flows of the Warta River, the third largest river in Poland. It analyses water flows in the Warta River in the years 1993–2020 for hydrological stations above and below the reservoir. The conducted research showed that the construction of the Jeziorsko reservoir also substantially contributed to an increase in minimum flows and a decrease in maximum flows. Moreover, the simulation showed that in the case of abscence of the reservoir, the flows of the Warta River would be higher in the period from January to June, and in the period from July to October the opposite situation would occur. In November and December, the flows would be at a similar level. Results obtained in the study, show that hydraulic structures are an effective solution in the context of stabilisation of the hydrological situation in a given region, particularly in terms of hydrological lows occurring with increasing intensity mitigated on sections of rivers below the reservoirs.

Dams are one of the most important engineering works of the current human society, and it is crucial to monitor and obtain analytical data to log their conditions, predict their behavior and, eventually, receive early warnings for planning interventions and maintenance activities. In this context, GNSS-based point displacement monitoring is nowadays a consolidated technique that is able to provide daily millimeter level accuracy, even with less sophisticated and less expensive single-frequency equipment. If properly designed, daily records of such monitoring systems produce time series that, when long enough, allow for an accurate reconstruction of the geometrical deformation of the structure, thus guiding semi-automatic early warning systems. This paper focuses on the procedure for the GNSS time series processing with a statistical approach. In particular, real-world times series collected from a dam monitoring test case are processed as an example of data filtering. A remove–restore technique based on a collocation approach is applied here. Basically, it consists of an initial deterministic modeling by polynomials and periodical components through least squares adjustment and Fourier transform, respectively, followed by a stochastic modeling based on empirical covariance estimation and a collocation approach. Filtered time series are interpreted by autoregressive models based on environmental factors such as air or water temperature and reservoir water level. Spatial analysis is finally performed by computing correlations between displacements of the monitored points, as well as by visualizing the overall structure deformation in time. Results positively validate the proposed data processing workflow, providing useful hints for the implementation of automatic early warning systems in the framework of structural monitoring based on continuous displacement measurements.

In bacteria, DNA-methyltransferase are responsible for DNA methylation of specific motifs in the genome. This methylation usually occurs at a very high rate. In the present study, we studied the MTases encoding genes found in the entomopathogenic bacteria Xenorhabdus. Only one persistent MTase was identified in the various species of this genus. This MTase, also broadly conserved in numerous Gram-negative bacteria, is called Dam: DNA-adenine MTase. Methylome analysis confirmed that the GATC motifs recognized by Dam were methylated at a rate of >99% in the studied strains. The observed enrichment of unmethylated motifs in putative promoter regions of the X. nematophila F1 strain suggests the possibility of epigenetic regulations. The overexpression of the Dam MTase responsible for additional motifs to be methylated was associated with impairment of two major phenotypes: motility, caused by a downregulation of flagellar genes, and hemolysis. However, our results suggest that dam overexpression did not modify the virulence properties of X. nematophila. This study increases the knowledge on the diverse roles played by MTases in bacteria.

The crack problem in mass concrete is a difficult problem to thoroughly solve, especially for the crack of dam construction in high-altitude regions. High altitude regions have the fundamental features of a dry climate and strong solar radiation. When dam construction is performed under these special climate conditions, temperature control and crack prevention become more difficult problems. Based on the high altitude region’s dam construction conditions, the existing temperature control measures were optimized by combining the three-dimensional finite element method. The synchronous cooling zone’s temperature control technique is adopted to lower the temperature gradient in the dam’s height direction, coordinate the deformation of the upper and lower layers, and reduce mutual constraints between the upper and lower layers to further reduce the temperature stress. Calculation results show that the adoption of synchronous cooling zones and the set of longitudinal joints can effectively reduce mutual constraints, increase the safety factor, and prevent cracks. This method can be considered an important reference to dam projects in high-altitude regions.

Nested Delft 3D and Hydrus 1D models were applied to simulate variations in the hydrological process of tidal creeks, soil water, and salt transport in the soil profile of the reconstruction area in the Yellow River Delta under six gate dam scenarios. The results showed that the gate dam set up near the sea area was more conducive to reducing the variation range of water depth in the reconstruction area. The water depth changes in scenarios with 6 m gate valves were higher than those with 3 m sluice valves in the same gate dam location. The variations in surface water salinity, cumulative flooding time, flooding frequency, and cumulative infiltration in each scenario were similar to those for water depth. Rapid changes in soil water and salt content occurred in each scenario in periods without flooding. The fluctuation of soil salt content in different soil layers was contrary to the changes in soil water content. The overall difference in the soil salt contents and soil water content of the soil profile in scenarios with a gate dam near the sea was relatively larger than that of those with a gate dam near the shore. Obvious differences in both the soil water content and soil salt content between scenarios with 3 m and 6 m gate valves were not observed. Our results contribute to the understanding of the function of gate dams in controlling soil water and salt content in coastal wetlands.

Dam construction for the provision of hydropower and a stable water supply poses a major threat to freshwater biodiversity. Water fluctuation due to dam management has adverse effects on local people and biodiversity in downstream areas, including sandbar-nesting birds. The aim of this research was to determine the effect of water levels controlled by upstream dams on the breeding success of two sandbar-nesting birds, the little ringed plover, Charadrius dubius, and little pratincole, Glareola lacteal, along the Mekong River in Bueng Kan Province, Thailand. During January–May 2018, we found 160 active nests of only two species, the little ringed plover (n = 26 nests, 288 exposure days) and the little pratincole (n = 134 nests, 890 exposure days). Their nest success rates were 19.49 ± 7.52% and 5.54 ± 1.61%, respectively. Predation was a major cause of nest failure for both species (n = 82), followed by flooding (n = 44). We found a significantly increased probability of nest flooding when the water level was higher than when the nest was initiated for those located closer to the water, particularly during March and April, when water levels fluctuated. Our results indicate that dams threaten sandbar-nesting species.

The ruminal microbiota of Angus cows and steers were characterized using 16s rRNA gene sequencing, and the expression of their metabolic pathways was predicted. Samples were collected on weaning day from the steers and the cows, and subsequently on three other occasions from the steers. Results showed that microbial richness, evenness, and diversity decreased (p < 0.001) in the rumen of the steers as they were weaned and transitioned to a high-concentrate feedlot diet. However, on the day of weaning, microbial evenness was similar to that observed in the rumen of cows (p = 0.12). The abundance of archaea was similar (p = 0.59) between the cows and steers at weaning, but it decreased (p = 0.04) in the rumen of steers after weaning, and remained stable (p ≥ 0.44) for the remainder of their lives. Likewise, no difference (p = 0.51) in the abundance of Bacteroidetes was detected between the cows and the calves on the day they were weaned, but the abundance of this phylum increased (p = 0.001) and remained stable after that. These results suggest that cows may have a strong influence on the composition, and help modulate the ruminal microbiota of young calves; however, following weaning, their ruminal microbiotas tend to differentiate from that state observed at earlier ages.

Approximately two thirds of the annual beef kill in New Zealand originates from the dairy industry. The recent increase in Jersey genetics in the dairy herd will inevitably result in an increase in Jersey genetics entering the beef herd from retention of dairy-origin calves for finishing. Limited literature is available on the effect of dam breed on the performance of beef-cross-dairy-breed progeny. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of dam breed from dams with varying proportions of Friesian and Jersey genetics on growth traits and carcass characteristics of their 24-month-old beef-cross-dairy-breed heifer and steer progeny. Liveweights of 142 heifers and 203 steers from Friesian (F), Friesian-cross (FX), Friesian–Jersey (FJ) and Jersey-cross (JX) dams were recorded at birth, weaning, as yearlings and at slaughter. Carcass characteristics were also recorded. At each point measured, liveweight was greatest for calves born to F dams. Calves born to F dams took 93 days to reach a weaning weight of 100 kg, whereas those from FX, FJ and JX dams took 99, 101 and 102 days, respectively. Carcass weight was greatest for progeny of F dams (286 kg, compared with 279, 275 and 276 for progeny of FX, FJ and JX dams, respectively). The progeny of JX dams had yellower fat than all other dam breed groups and a greater incidence of excessively yellow fat (fat score ≥ 5).

Due to the complex structure and stress distribution of dam galleries, cracks often appear during the construction, operation and maintenance periods of dams. This paper proposes a method to determine the real strength and fracture parameters of gallery concrete, considering environmental temperature and humidity. The strength and fracture tests were carried out for gallery concrete at various ages and under different curing temperature and humidity conditions. The influence of curing conditions on the mechanical properties of gallery concrete was quantitatively analyzed. The prediction equations of the strength and fracture parameters of gallery concrete under arbitrary temperature and humidity were established. Based on the measured temperature and humidity data, the real mechanical parameters of gallery concrete were predicted. The research results show that the influence of environmental conditions on mechanical parameters cannot be neglected, as this can result in a strength reduction of up to 33.81%. The proposed equations can be used to predict the mechanical parameters of gallery concrete, subject to real environmental conditions, which can help to correct a maximum deviation of 54.62% on parameters calculated using actual ages. The proposed method can provide a scientific basis for the cracking risk analysis and safety assessment of the gallery structure under actual conditions.

Bovine leukemia virus (BLV), which causes enzootic bovine leukosis, is transmitted to calves through the milk of BLV-infected dams. Bovine leukocyte antigen (BoLA)-DRB3 is a polymorphic gene associated with BLV infectivity and proviral load (PVL). However, the effect of BoLA-DRB3 polymorphism on the infectivity and PVL of milk from BLV-infected dams remains unknown. This study examined milk from 259 BLV-infected dams, including susceptible dams carrying at least one BoLA-DRB3*012:01 or *015:01 allele with high PVL, resistant dams carrying at least one BoLA-DRB3*002:01, *009:02, or *014:01:01 allele with low PVL, and neutral dams carrying other alleles. The detection rate of BLV provirus and PVL were significantly higher in milk from susceptible dams than in that from resistant dams. This result was confirmed in a three-year follow-up study in which milk from susceptible dams showed a higher BLV provirus detection rate over a longer period than that from resistant dams. The visualization of infectivity of milk cells using a luminescence syncytium induction assay showed that the infectious risk of milk from BLV-infected dams was markedly high for susceptible dams compared to resistant ones. This is the first report confirming that BoLA-DRB3 polymorphism affects the PVL and infectivity of milk from BLV-infected dams.

Dams are gray infrastructure, providing various benefits such as flood control, water supply, and power generation. In order to create the next generation of infrastructure that explores how nature can act as infrastructure to meet development and ecological sustainability, artificial plantings have been attempted on dam slopes in Korea since 2000. As the planted trees are now stabilized to form a forest, it is time to study the floral characteristics and functions for effective ecological management and the safety of the dams. In this study, we investigated and analyzed flora in the slopes of eight dams in Korea. The comparative study of the whole flora in both the planted zones of the slopes of dams and left and right forests of dams revealed that the number of plant species was higher in the planted zones than in the left and right forests of the same size area. The plant family containing the greatest number of species in the slopes was Asteraceae, followed by Poaceae, Fabaceae, and Rosaceae. Currently, the community structures and families in the slopes of dams exhibit the characteristics of habitats in the initial stage of vegetation succession. Our investigation of planted species and immigration species in the slopes revealed that the latter comprised 89.9%. An average of 34.4% of species were interacting with the dam slope and the left and right forests. The species diversity index on dam slopes showed a tendency to be higher as the number of planted species increased and the period time increased. Average growth heights of planted trees were identified as 0.5–1.6 m for the shrubs layer, 3.5–4.5 m for the small trees layer, and 6.0–7.2 m for the trees layer. The heights of major trees, including Pinus densiflora, Quercus spp., Prunus sargentii, Styrax japonicus, and Cornus controversa, were similar to or higher than those of their counterparts in natural forests. As a result, dam slopes were similar to natural forests, having potential as habitats for various flora. To harmoniously maintain the ecological health and safety of water resource facilities of the slopes of dams, however, it is necessary to conduct periodic and various investigations on changes of the flora and growth of trees, and actively manage them.

Steindachneridion melanodermatum is the largest catfish of the Lower Iguaçu River and is endangered due to the habitat fragmentation caused by dams. Currently, the wild population’s last refuge is restricted to an area of 190 km. This study presents the first analysis of its genetic diversity and population structure, using microsatellite loci and mtDNA. The population has an adequate level of genetic diversity, but signs of a recent bottleneck were observed. The Baixo Iguaçu Hydroelectric Power Plant has recently fragmented the population and threatened it with extinction in a reduced area of nearly 30 km. Based on our results, we strongly advise against the stocking of breeding specimens below the Salto Caxias HPP to not compromise the integrity of the native gene pools at the receptor sites. In addition, we recommend manual fish transposition, trap-and-haul, to maintain the genetic connectivity of individuals upstream and downstream of the dam as a conservation strategy. Furthermore, studies on behavior and swimming capacities, and suitable fishways for this species must be developed. We strongly recommend that the Lower Iguaçu River and its tributaries be protected and preserved as free from additional barriers to prevent future habitat disruption for the benefit of S. melanodermatum and several other endemic and endangered species.

In recent years, rock scouring or erosion downstream of dams has become an increasing dam safety concern. Several theoretical, semi-theoretical, semi-analytical and numerical methods can be used to assess the rock erosion in hydraulic structures. Semi-theoretical approaches determine the correlation between the erosive intensity of fluid flow and the resistive capacity of rock. Such approaches establish the scour thresholds as a function of erosive intensity of water and several rock mass indices by using in situ data and a curve-fitting approach. In some studies, the excavatability index, initially developed for rock mass stability analysis, was used to analyse the rock mass resistance in hydraulic erodibility analysis. The effectivity and weight of the geomechanical parameters used are yet to be determined on the basis of the erodibility phenomenon. The semi-analytical methods are developed on the basis of the mechanical and hydraulic interaction of rock mass and water. Four methods developed by Bollaert et al. are important in determining the erodibility in the plunge pool, but they are not applicable in the case of spillways. They used the comprehensive fracture mechanics for closed-end joints, quasi-steady impulsion, and dynamic impulsion (DI) for blocky rock erosion. The application of these methods to each site is necessary to identify constants that are difficult to determine. Few numerical methods are available to assess the rock mass erosion in hydraulic structures. In the case of numerical methods, the erosive agent is indistinct, and the hydraulic hazard parameter on the spillway surface is almost challenging to apply. This study comprehensively reviews the mechanism of erosion and the methods for assessing the risk of potential rock mass erosion downstream of dams and hydraulic structures. The advantages and disadvantages of all methods are discussed and the potential future research directions in this domain are proposed.

The storage of wastes from mining and mineral processing plants in the tailing dumps in regions with cold climates has a number of environmental consequences. Interactions of water with tailings in cold climates often lead to the thawing of permafrost soils, formation of technogenic thawing zones, and leakage of drainage waters. In the case of fault zones development in these areas, technogenic solutions are often filtered outside the tailing dump, promoting further development of filtration channels. In order to prevent leakage of solution from tailing dumps over time, it is necessary to determine the thawing zones and prevent the formation of filtration channels. In the case of the formation of a filtration channel, it is necessary to know what rate of rock thawing occurred near the formed filtration channel. In this study, for the tailing dump of a diamond mining factory, we calculated two exothermic effects: (1) due to physical heating of dump rock by filtering industrial water with temperatures from 2 to 15 °C through the rock; and (2) due to the chemical interaction of industrial water with the dam base rock. The amount of energy transferred by the water to the frozen and thawed rock over 10 years was calculated using thermophysical modeling and was 207.8 GJ and 8.39 GJ respectively. The amount of energy that the rock received during the ten-year period due to dissolution of the limestones and equilibration of solutions was calculated using thermodynamic modeling and was 0.37 GJ, which is 4.4% of the average amount of energy, expended on heating the thawed rock (8.39 GJ).

The Dniester is one of the largest transboundary rivers of the Black Sea basin, and its lower reaches integrate the influence of climate change and hydropower plant (HPP) impact on the waterway. The decrease in precipitation and average annual air temperature increase and intensive hydroelectric construction have led to a decline in the total water content of the river, during the last 10 years, being below the long-term historical “norm”. The shifts in the river flow result in multidirectional seasonal dynamics of nutrient concentrations. During the modern period, a stabilization of nutrient concentrations takes place, being lower than at the peak of eutrophication in the 1970s–1980s, but higher than in the natural flow period. The construction of reservoirs leads to a long-term decline in silica concentrations, continuing in the modern period. The concentration of heavy metals and metalloids in water and bottom sediments of the river generally corresponds to the ecological status of “Moderate”. Biological communities show a high β-diversity of microalgae, but low diversity of plankton and benthic invertebrates. Biological communities respond to the impact of HPP in both the short- and long-term. Hydroelectric dams change the bioavailability of nutrients downstream which, in the long-term, causes shifts in phytoplankton composition, especially the reduction of Bacillariophyta due to the lack of silicates that are deposited in reservoirs. However, in the short-term, after the discharge from the HPP dam, the concentration of silicates and the proportion of diatoms increase. Long-term changes also include a decline in the proportion of Rotifera and an increase in Copepoda in the total abundance of zooplankton and the unification of the benthic community with an increase in the biomass of gastropods in the area, which can be considered as indicators of the impact of hydroelectric power plants. The saprobity index, calculated both for zooplankton and macrozoobenthos, characterised the water as moderately polluted; benthic biotic indexes (Biological monitoring working party (BMWP), Belgian Biotic Index (BBI), Danish Stream Fauna Index (DSFI)) calculated on macrozoobenthos described the condition as “low” quality.

Accurate measurement of water levels and variations in lakes and reservoirs is crucial for water management. The retrieval of the accurate variations in water levels in lakes and reservoirs with small widths from high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images such as the TerraSAR add-on for Digital Elevation Measurements (TanDEM-X) and COnstellation of small Satellites for the Mediterranean basin Observation (COSMO-SkyMed) are presented here. A detailed digital surface model (DSM) for the upstream face of the dam was constructed using SAR interferometry with TanDEM-X data to estimate the water level. The elevation of the waterline below that of the interferometric SAR (InSAR) DSM was estimated based on upstream face modeling. The waterline boundary detected using the SAR Edge Detection Hough Transform algorithm was applied to the restored DSM. The SAR-derived water level variations showed a high correlation coefficient of 0.99 and a gradient of 1.08 with the gauged data. The difference between the gauged data and SAR-derived data was within ±1 m, and the standard deviation of the residual was 0.60 m. These results suggest that water level estimation can be used as an operational supplement for traditional gauged data at remote sites.

Body systems once thought sterile at birth instead have complex and sometimes abundant microbial ecosystems. However, relationships between dam and calf microbial ecosystems are still unclear. The objectives of this study were to (1) characterize the various maternal and calf microbiomes during peri-partum and post-partum periods and (2) examine the influence of the maternal microbiome on calf fecal microbiome composition during the pre-weaning phase. Multiparous Holstein cows were placed in individual, freshly bedded box stalls 14 d before expected calving. Caudal vaginal fluid samples were collected approximately 24 h before calving and dam fecal, oral, colostrum, and placenta samples were collected immediately after calving. Calf fecal samples were collected at birth (meconium) and 24 h, 7 d, 42 d, and 60 d of age. Amplicons covering V4 16S rDNA regions were generated using DNA extracted from all samples and were sequenced using 300 bp paired end Illumina MiSeq sequencing. Spearman rank correlations were performed between genera in maternal and calf fecal microbiomes. Negative binomial regression models were created for genera in calf fecal samples at each time point using genera in maternal microbiomes. We determined that Bacteroidetes dominated the calf fecal microbiome at all time points (relative abundance ≥42.55%) except for 24 h post-calving, whereas Proteobacteria were the dominant phylum (relative abundance = 85.10%). Maternal fecal, oral, placental, vaginal, and colostrum microbiomes were significant predictors of calf fecal microbiome throughout pre-weaning. Results indicate that calf fecal microbiome inoculation and development may be derived from various maternal sources. Maternal microbiomes could be used to predict calf microbiome development, but further research on the environmental and genetic influences is needed.

More than a year ago, the first case of infection by a new coronavirus was identified, which subsequently produced a pandemic causing human deaths throughout the world. Much research has been published on this virus, and discoveries indicate that oxidative stress contributes to the possibility of getting sick from the new SARS-CoV-2. It follows that free radical scavengers may be useful for the treatment of coronavirus 19 disease (COVID-19). This report investigates the antioxidant properties of nine antivirals, two anticancer molecules, one antibiotic, one antioxidant found in orange juice (Hesperidin), one anthelmintic and one antiparasitic (Ivermectin). A molecule that is apt for scavenging free radicals can be either an electron donor or electron acceptor. The results I present here show Valrubicin as the best electron acceptor (an anticancer drug with three F atoms in its structure) and elbasvir as the best electron donor (antiviral for chronic hepatitis C). Most antiviral drugs are good electron donors, meaning that they are molecules capable of reduzing other molecules. Ivermectin and Molnupiravir are two powerful COVID-19 drugs that are not good electron acceptors, and the fact that they are not as effective oxidants as other molecules may be an advantage. Electron acceptor molecules oxidize other molecules and affect the conditions necessary for viral infection, such as the replication and spread of the virus, but they may also oxidize molecules that are essential for life. This means that the weapons used to defend us from COVID-19 may also harm us. This study posits the idea that oxide reduction balance may help explain the toxicity or efficacy of these drugs. These results represent a further advance on the road towards understanding the action mechanisms of drugs used as possible treatments for COVID-19. Looking ahead, clinical studies are needed to define the importance of antioxidants in treating COVID-19.

The pumped hydropower energy storage (PHES) assessments carried out so far have been focused on large water bodies obtained from global or restricted-use databases, or, on the other hand, on the application of methodologies to specific areas focusing on the detection of dams. In addition, many assessments do not include data optimization, or include it at the end of the process and are subject to the prior application of restrictions, often stipulated with subjective criteria. The aim of this article is to design a universal and easily applicable methodology for the assessment of viable PHES potential, which provides immediate and reliable results to assist in the energy planning of a given territory. It is classified in ravine basins, including an optimization before using the restrictions. The island of Gran Canaria is taken as the territory of application, whose density of dams is the highest in the world and whose share of hydroelectric energy is, at present, null; besides, no PHES studies have been carried out. The results show that the PHES potential in Gran Canaria is 5996 MWh after applying the optimization and all technical constraints. If all environmental constraints were rigorously applied, the island would have no possible pairing. The results demonstrate the importance of tailoring the restrictions to each particular territory.

Spillways with Highly Converging Chutes (HCCs) are a non-conventional alternative that can be applied to achieve a higher outflow capacity when the weir length exceeds the width of the valley at the toe of gravity or arch dams. This kind of spillway has been used in the past, but no general studies have yet been published. This article summarizes experimental research work aiming to increase the knowledge of the effect of some design parameters of HCCs on the energy dissipation in the stilling basin at the toe of the dam. As a comparison reference, we use the Type I stilling basins, widely known by the technical dam engineering community. The obtained results show that spillways with HCCs are a promising alternative to traditional designs, combining the ability to increase the weir length with a high capacity to dissipate energy through the impingement effect of the frontal and the side jets inside the stilling basin.

Perinatal transmission plays a critical role in the spread of bovine leukemia virus (BLV) infection in cattle herds. In the Holstein breed, we previously identified BLV resistant and susceptible bovine leukocyte antigen (BoLA)-DRB3 alleles, including BoLA-DRB3*009:02 and *014:01:01 with a low BLV proviral load (PVL), and *015:01 and *012:01 with a high PVL. Here, we evaluated the perinatal BLV transmission risk in dams with different BoLA-DRB3 alleles. BoLA-DRB3 alleles of 120 dam-calf pairs from five dairy farms in Japan were identified; their PVL was quantified using the BLV-Coordination of Common Motifs (CoCoMo)-qPCR-2 assay. Ninety-six dams were BLV-positive, and 29 gave birth to BLV-infected calves. Perinatal transmission frequency was 19% in dams with resistant alleles suppressed to a low PVL level, and 38% and 25% in dams with susceptible and neutral alleles that maintained high PVL levels, respectively. Notably, all calves with resistant alleles were BLV free, whereas 30% of calves with susceptible genes were infected. Thus, vertical transmission risk was extremely lower for dams and calves with resistant alleles compared to those with susceptible alleles. Our results can inform the development of effective BLV eradication programs under field conditions by providing necessary data to allow for optimal selection of dams for breeding.
