Background: This study investigated the effectiveness and safety of pharmacopuncture for pain relief and functional improvement in patients with traffic accident (TA)-induced acute tension headaches. Methods: The study employed a parallel, single-centered, pragmatic, randomized controlled trial design. Eighty patients complaining of acute tension headaches were randomized into the integrative Korean medicine treatment (IKM treatment) group and the pharmacopuncture group on suboccipital muscles (suboccipital muscles pharmacopuncture + IKM treatment), with 40 participants assigned to each group. The patients in the pharmacopuncture group underwent pharmacopuncture as an add-on therapy, consisting of three sessions. Both groups were reassessed 2 months post-intervention. To assess the outcomes, the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) for Headache, NRS for Neck Pain, Headache Disability Index, Headache Impact Test-6, EuroQol 5-Dimension, and Patient Global Impression of Change were used. Results: The improvement in the outcomes of the pharmacopuncture group was significantly greater than that of the comparison group on day 4 of hospitalization in terms of pain (difference in NRS of headache -2.59, 95% CI -3.06 to -2.12; NRS of Neck pain -1.05, 95% CI -1.50 to -0.59) and function (difference in HDI -24.78, 95% CI, -31.79 to -17.76; HIT-6 -6.13, 95% CI, -9.47 to -2.78). Additionally, in 2 months of follow-up, the recovery rate of headache was significantly higher in the pharmacopuncture group than in the comparison group. Conclusions: The pharmacopuncture group demonstrated superior outcomes in symptom improvement than the comparison group did, providing insights into novel and useful applications of pharmacopuncture in the clinical practice of Korean medicine.

For antinuclear antibody (ANA) screening, the gold standard method is an indirect immunofluorescence assay (IIFA) using HEp-2 cells, and a serial dilution test is needed to determine the endpoint titer. We aimed to evaluate the accuracy of the estimated endpoint titer (eEPT) by the NOVA View system, by comparing it with the EPT by the serial dilution method (dEPT). The endpoint titers of a total of 1518 ANA positive cases with five major patterns including speckled, homogeneous, centromere, nucleolar, and nuclear dots patterns were determined using both the estimation function and the serial dilution method by the NOVA View system. A significant correlation between the light intensity unit (LIU) values and dEPTs was identified in all five patterns with high ρ values, ranging from 0.666 to 0.832. However, the overall exact match rate between dEPT and eEPT was 22.1% (336/1518), with the ±one-titer match rate being highest in the centromere pattern (62.8%, 81/129), and lowest in the homogeneous pattern (37.6%, 200/532). This suggests that while LIU values correlate well with dEPT, there are discrepancies in numerical agreement. Most cases that did not show an exact match, showed one-to-three-titer overestimations by eEPT. Therefore, adjusting eEPT downward significantly improved the concordance rates with dEPTs. Further investigation for an appropriate cutoff of LIU values for determining eEPT should be performed for clinical application and contribution to the standardization of the ANA titer.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the association between the dietary intake of vitamin B complex (thiamine, riboflavin, and niacin) and cervical cancer in Korea., Methods: The data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) from 2010 to 2021 were analyzed, which included 28,306 participants who were categorized into non-cervical cancer and cervical cancer groups. The following dietary intake threshold levels of thiamine, riboflavin, and niacin were identified based on the recommended daily allowances (RDAs): thiamine, 1.1 mg/day; riboflavin, 1.2 mg/day; and niacin, 14 mg/day., Results: Among 28,306 participants, 27,976 were in the non-cervical cancer group and 330 were in the cervical cancer group. Riboflavin intakes of more than 1.2 mg/day but less than 2.4 mg/day were associated with a significantly reduced risk of cervical cancer, whereas intakes of above 2.4 mg/day were not associated with cervical cancer. Thiamine and niacin intakes were not significantly related to the risk of cervical cancer., Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that an intake of riboflavin of 1.2-2.4 mg/day may contribute to a lower risk of cervical cancer.

The browning of white adipocytes may be an innovative approach to address obesity. This study investigated the effects of rabbit meat extract on 3T3-L1 adipocytes, with a specific emphasis on inducing browning. The browning effects of rabbit meat extract were evaluated by analyzing genes specifically expressed in 3T3-L1 adipocytes using quantitative PCR and immunoblotting. Rabbit meat extract increased the expression of brown adipocyte-specific markers, UCP1 and PGC1α, and mitochondrial biogenesis factors, TFAM and NRF1, without affecting cell viability in fully differentiated 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Moreover, adipocyte differentiation and the triglyceride content were decreased; hormone-sensitive lipase activity was promoted. Rabbit meat extract activated the AMPK pathway in the differentiated 3T3-L1 cells. However, in adipocytes treated with rabbit meat extract, the expression of genes related to browning was reduced by the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) inhibitor, dorsomorphin dihydrochloride. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate that rabbit meat extract induces the browning of white adipocytes via the activation of the AMPK pathway, thereby demonstrating its therapeutic potential in preventing obesity.

Colposcopy is the gold standard diagnostic tool for identifying cervical lesions. However, the accuracy of colposcopies depends on the proficiency of the colposcopist. Machine learning algorithms using an artificial intelligence (AI) system can quickly process large amounts of data and have been successfully applied in several clinical situations. This study evaluated the feasibility of an AI system as an assistive tool for diagnosing high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia lesions compared to the human interpretation of cervical images. This two-centered, crossover, double-blind, randomized controlled trial included 886 randomly selected images. Four colposcopists (two proficient and two inexperienced) independently evaluated cervical images, once with and the other time without the aid of the Cerviray AI ® system (AIDOT, Seoul, Republic of Korea). The AI aid demonstrated improved areas under the curve on the localization receiver-operating characteristic curve compared with the colposcopy impressions of colposcopists (difference 0.12, 95% confidence interval, 0.10-0.14, p < 0.001). Sensitivity and specificity also improved when using the AI system (89.18% vs. 71.33%; p < 0.001, 96.68% vs. 92.16%; p < 0.001, respectively). Additionally, the classification accuracy rate improved with the aid of AI (86.40% vs. 75.45%; p < 0.001). Overall, the AI system could be used as an assistive diagnostic tool for both proficient and inexperienced colposcopists in cervical cancer screenings to estimate the impression and location of pathologic lesions. Further utilization of this system could help inexperienced colposcopists confirm where to perform a biopsy to diagnose high-grade lesions.

Background: The aim of this study is to compare the surgical outcomes of single-port laparoscopic surgery (SPLS) and single-port robotic surgery (SPRS)., Methods: We retrospectively analyzed patients who underwent a hysterectomy, ovarian cystectomy, or myomectomy with SPLS or SPRS from January 2020 to July 2022. Statistical analyses were performed using the SPSS chi-square test and student's t -test., Results: A total of 566 surgeries including single-port laparoscopic hysterectomy (SPLH; n = 148), single-port robotic hysterectomy (SPRH; n = 35), single-port laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy (SPLC; n = 207), single-port robotic ovarian cystectomy (SPRC; n = 108), single-port laparoscopic myomectomy (SPLM; n = 12), and single-port robotic myomectomy (SPRM; n = 56). The SPRH, SPRC, and SPRM groups had a shorter operation time than the SPLS group, although the results were not statistically significant (SPRH vs. SPLH, p = 0.134; SPRC vs. SPLC, p = 0.098; SPRM vs. SPLM, p = 0.202). Incisional hernia occurred as a postoperative complication in two patients only in the SPLH group. Postoperative Hb changes were lower in the SPRC and SPRM groups than in the SPLC and SPLM groups (SPRC vs. SPLC, p = 0.023; SPRM vs. SPLM, p = 0.010)., Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that the SPRS had comparable surgical outcomes when compared to the SPLS. Therefore, the SPRS should be considered a feasible and safe option for gynecologic patients., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflicts of interest.

The lacking of laboratory black carbon (BC) samples have long challenged the corresponding toxicological research; furthermore, the toxicity tests of engineered carbon nanoparticles were unable to reflect atmospheric BC. As a simplified approach, we have synthesized artificial BC (aBC) for the purpose of representing atmospheric BC. Surface chemical properties of aBC were controlled by thermal treatment, without transforming its physical characteristics; thus, we were able to examine the toxicological effects on A549 human lung cells arising from aBC with varying oxidation surface properties. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, as well as Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, verified the presence of increased amounts of oxygenated functional groups on the surface of thermally-treated aBC, indicating aBC oxidization at elevated temperatures; aBC with increased oxygen functional group content displayed increased toxicity to A549 cells, specifically by decreasing cell viability to 45% and elevating reactive oxygen species levels up to 294% for samples treated at 800 °C.

Non-volatile memory (NVM) devices based on three-terminal thin-film transistors (TFTs) have gained extensive interest in memory applications due to their high retained characteristics, good scalability, and high charge storage capacity. Herein, we report a low-temperature (<100 °C) processed top-gate TFT-type NVM device using indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) semiconductor with monolayer gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as a floating gate layer to obtain reliable memory operations. The proposed NVM device exhibits a high memory window (ΔV th ) of 13.7 V when it sweeps from -20 V to +20 V back and forth. Additionally, the material characteristics of the monolayer AuNPs (floating gate layer) and IGZO film (semiconductor layer) are confirmed using transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. The memory operations in terms of endurance and retention are obtained, revealing highly stable endurance properties of the device up to 100 P/E cycles by applying pulses (±20 V, duration of 100 ms) and reliable retention time up to 10 4 s. The proposed NVM device, owing to the properties of large memory window, stable endurance, and high retention time, enables an excellent approach in futuristic non-volatile memory technology.

Introduction: this study aimed to investigate the long-term clinical efficacy and satisfaction degree of integrative Korean medicine (KM) treatment for patients with failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS)., Methods: we performed a follow-up questionnaire survey and retrospective analysis of medical records for patients with FBSS who underwent inpatient treatment for ≥ 1 week. The primary evaluation indices were numeric rating scale (NRS) scores for low back pain (LBP) and leg pain at admission and discharge. Sub-evaluation indices included the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and EuroQol 5-dimension (EQ-5D) score. The follow-up questionnaire survey obtained information regarding previous surgeries; reasons for satisfaction/dissatisfaction with surgical and KM treatment; and current status., Results: compared with at admission, there was a significant post-treatment decrease in the NRS scores for LBP and leg pain, as well as the ODI score. Further, there was a significant post-treatment increase in the EQ-5D score. Regarding the patients' global impression of change for KM treatment administered during admission and at the follow-up questionnaire survey, 101 (95.3%) patients selected "minimally improved" or better., Conclusion: integrative KM treatment could effectively reduce pain, as well as improve function and health-related quality of life, in patients with FBSS.

Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) outbreaks in hospital settings challenge the treatment of patients and infection control. Understanding the relatedness of clinical isolates is important in distinguishing outbreak isolates from sporadic cases. This study investigated 11 CRAB isolates from a hospital outbreak by whole-genome sequencing (WGS), utilizing various bioinformatics tools for outbreak analysis. The results of multilocus sequence typing (MLST), single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis, and phylogenetic tree analysis by WGS through web-based tools were compared, and repetitive element polymerase chain reaction (rep-PCR) typing was performed. Through the WGS of 11 A. baumannii isolates, three clonal lineages were identified from the outbreak. The coexistence of bla OXA-23 , bla OXA-66 , bla ADC-25 , and armA with additional aminoglycoside-inactivating enzymes, predicted to confer multidrug resistance, was identified in all isolates. The MLST Oxford scheme identified three types (ST191, ST369, and ST451), and, through whole-genome MLST and whole-genome SNP analyses, different clones were found to exist within the MLST types. wgSNP showed the highest discriminatory power with the lowest similarities among the isolates. Using the various bioinformatics tools for WGS, CRAB outbreak analysis was applicable and identified three discrete clusters differentiating the separate epidemiologic relationships among the isolates.

Titanium and titanium alloys are promising implant metallic materials because of their high strengths, low elastic moduli, high corrosion resistances, and excellent biocompatibilities. A large difference in elastic modulus between the implant material and bone leads to a stress shielding effect, which increases the probability of implant separation or decrease in the bone density around it. Thus, a lower elastic modulus is required for a better implant metallic material. β titanium has a lower elastic modulus and high strength and can reduce the probability of the stress shielding effect. In this study, the applicability of the Ti-39Nb-6Zr+0.45Al alloy, obtained by adding a small amount of aluminum to the Ti-39Nb-6Zr alloy, as a biomedical implant material was evaluated. The mechanical properties and biocompatibility of the alloy were evaluated. The biocompatibility of Ti-39Nb-6Zr+0.45Al was similar to that of Ti-39Nb-6Zr according to in vitro and in vivo experiments. In addition, the biological corrosion resistances were evaluated through a corrosion test using a 0.9% NaCl solution, which is equivalent to physiological saline. The corrosion resistance was improved by the addition of Al. The yield strength of the Ti-39Nb-6Zr+0.45Al alloy was improved by approximately 20%. The excellent biocompatibility confirmed its feasibility for use as a biomedical implant material.

This study aimed to identify the prognostic subgroups of stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma based on metastatic burden and explore their distinct clinical and genomic features. Patients aged ≥18 months with stage 4 and metaiodobenzylguanidine-avid neuroblastoma were enrolled. One hundred and thirty eligible patients were treated under the tandem high-dose chemotherapy scheme. Prognostic significance of metastatic burden measured by the modified Curie score was analyzed using a competing risk approach, and the optimal cut-point was determined. Metastasis-specific subgroups (cut-point: 26) were compared using clinicopathological variables, and differential gene expression analysis and gene set variation analysis (GSVA) were performed using RNA sequencing (RNA-seq). Metastatic burden at diagnosis showed a progressive association with relapse/progression. After applying the cut-point, patients with high metastatic burden showed >3-fold higher risk of relapse/progression than those with low metastatic burden. Moreover, patients with high metastatic burden showed smaller primary tumors and higher biochemical marker levels than those with low metastatic burden. In the genomic analysis, 51 genes were found to be differentially expressed based on the set criteria. GSVA revealed 55 gene sets, which significantly distinguished patients with high metastatic burden from those with low metastatic burden at a false discovery rate <0.25. The results indicated the prognostic significance of metastatic burden in stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma, and we identified the distinct clinicopathological and genomic features based on metastatic burden. This study may aid in the better understanding and risk-stratification of stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma patients.
