As the global demographic shifts toward an aging population, aging-related problems, particularly in older individuals with dynapenia, are increasingly gaining attention. However, interventional studies focusing on physical and cognitive function and sleep quality in such individuals are limited, indicating a need for further exploration. The present study investigated the effects of whole-body vibration (WBV) training on physical and cognitive function and sleep quality in older people with dynapenia residing in long-term care institutions. This study was a randomized controlled trial. The experimental group underwent WBV training three times a week for 3 months, whereas the control group continued with their regular daily care routine. Statistical analyses were performed using the Traditional Chinese version of SAS Statistics version 9.4. Paired t tests, a one-way analysis of variance, independent t tests, and generalized estimating equation analysis were performed. The results revealed that compared with the control group, the experimental group experienced significant improvements in grip strength, instrumental activities of daily living, cognitive function, and sleep quality in terms of latency and duration. These findings suggest that 3 months of WBV training can effectively enhance physical and cognitive function and sleep quality in older people with dynapenia residing in long-term care institutions.

Microsorum pteropus ‘Windeløv’ is a water fern from Asia commonly used in aquarium landscapes. This study aimed to develop a mass production method through the induction of green globular bodies (GGBs) from leaf explants of M. pteropus. Surface sterilization was performed on adventitious buds on the fronds of M. pteropus ‘Windeløv’ as explants. The results showed that the optimal explant disinfection condition was 1% sodium hypochlorite solution for 20 min, achieving a successful rate of 87.5 ± 9.6%. The most effective GGB induction was achieved with MS medium supplemented with 5.0 mg/L of NAA (1-Naphthaleneaceticacid) and 0.5 mg/L of 6-BA (6-benzylaminopurine), producing the highest number and size of GGBs, with a mean value of 4.0 ± 0.8 GGBs per explant and a diameter of 2.45 ± 0.61 mm after 8 weeks of culture. The regeneration of multiple sporophytes from the GGBs was only observed under hormone-free MS medium, with a mean value of 34.2 ± 7.3 sporophytes per GGB after 6 weeks of culture. Subsequently, rootless and separated sporophytes could be directly transplanted into the aquarium with a 100% survival rate.

Coherent Doppler wind lidar (CDWL) uses transmitted laser pulses to measure wind velocity distribution. However, the echo signal of CDWL is easily affected by atmospheric turbulence, which can decrease the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of lidar. To improve the SNR, this paper proposes a pulse accumulation method based on the cross-correlation function to estimate the phase of the signal. Compared with incoherent pulse accumulation, the proposed method significantly enhances the correlation between signals from different periods to obtain high SNR gains that arise from pulse accumulation. Using simulation, the study evaluates the effectiveness of this phase estimation method and its robustness against noise in algorithms which analyze Doppler frequency shifts. Furthermore, a CDWL is developed for measuring the speed of an indoor motor turntable and the outdoor atmospheric wind field. The phase estimation method yielded SNR gains of 28.18 dB and 32.03 dB for accumulation numbers of 500 and 1500, respectively. The implementation of this method in motor turntable speed measurements demonstrated a significant reduction in speed error—averaging 9.18% lower than that of incoherent accumulation lidar systems. In experiments that measure atmospheric wind fields, the linear fit curve slope between the measured wind speed and the wind speed measured via a commercial wind-measuring lidar can be reduced from 1.146 to 1.093.

Guided-mode resonance (GMR) gratings have emerged as a promising sensing technology, with a growing number of applications in diverse fields. This study aimed to identify the optimal design parameters of a simple-to-fabricate and high-performance one-dimensional GMR grating. The structural parameters of the GMR grating were optimized, and a high-refractive-index thin film was simulated on the grating surface, resulting in efficient confinement of the electric field energy within the waveguide. Numerical simulations demonstrated that the optimized GMR grating exhibited remarkable sensitivity (252 nm/RIU) and an extremely narrow full width at half maximum (2 × 10−4 nm), resulting in an ultra-high figure of merit (839,666) at an incident angle of 50°. This performance is several orders of magnitude higher than that of conventional GMR sensors. To broaden the scope of the study and to make it more relevant to practical applications, simulations were also conducted at incident angles of 60° and 70°. This holistic approach sought to develop a comprehensive understanding of the performance of the GMR-based sensor under diverse operational conditions.

Background: The main objective of this study was to investigate the risk of falls among middle-aged and older adults with dynapenic abdominal obesity. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted to review and analyze relevant studies. Dynapenia was measured by handgrip strength, and abdominal obesity was measured by waist circumference. The search keywords included “older people” OR “elderly” OR “middle age” AND “dynapenia” AND “abdominal obesity” AND “fall.” The search was not limited by time and included articles published up until April 2023. The literature search process followed the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines, involving extraction and examination of the retrieved relevant articles. Systematic literature searches were performed in databases such as Embase, PubMed, MEDLINE, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library. Results: This study collected a total of eight articles with a combined sample size of 15,506 participants. The findings revealed that the average follow-up period for falls was 6.6 years (SD = 3.67). The overall results of the study showed that individuals with dynapenic abdominal obesity had a higher risk of falls compared to those without dynapenic abdominal obesity (RR = 6.91, 95% CI: 5.42–8.80). Subgroup analysis demonstrated that both prospective studies (HR = 6.61; 95% CI = 4.29–10.20) and retrospective studies (OR = 7.37; 95% CI = 5.13–10.59) consistently found a higher risk of falls among individuals with dynapenic abdominal obesity. However, there was no significant difference in fall risk between community-dwelling individuals with dynapenic abdominal obesity and hospitalized individuals with dynapenic abdominal obesity (Qbetweenx2 = 0.29, p = 0.58). Additionally, there was no difference in fall risk between individuals with dynapenic abdominal obesity residing in Europe and Latin America compared to those residing in Asia (Qbetweenx2 = 0.05, p = 0.81). It was worth noting that male individuals with dynapenic abdominal obesity had a higher risk of falls compared to females (Qbetweenx2 = 4.73, p = 0.03). Conclusions: Empirical studies have demonstrated that individuals with dynapenic abdominal obesity have a higher risk of falls. Therefore, healthcare professionals should conduct early fall risk assessments and develop effective preventive strategies specifically targeted at individuals with dynapenic abdominal obesity.

Previous studies reported that lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) exposure are linked to changes in serum adiponectin; an adipokine that promotes glycolysis and inhibits gluconeogenesis to regulate glucose metabolism. However, no study has ever explored the relationship between exposure to these two heavy metals and adiponectin in adolescents and young adults. Additionally, the role of adiponectin in the relationship between Pb and Cd exposure and vascular endothelial cell apoptosis has never been investigated. In this study, 724 Taiwanese participants, aged 12 to 30 years, were enrolled to investigate the association among urinary lead and cadmium, serum adiponectin, and apoptotic microparticles (CD31+/CD42a−, CD31+/CD42a+, and CD14). The results of the current study revealed a statistically significant inverse association between urine Pb and Cd levels and adiponectin levels, as well as a positive association with apoptotic microparticles (CD31+/CD42a−, CD31+/CD42a+, and CD14). Adiponectin was also inversely correlated with CD31+/CD42a− and CD31+/CD42a+. Moreover, when subjects with both Pb and Cd levels above the 50th percentile were compared to those below it, the former group exhibited the lowest average adiponectin value. Additionally, a more pronounced positive association between heavy metals and apoptotic microparticles (CD31+/CD42a− and CD31+/CD42a+) was observed when adiponectin levels were lower. Furthermore, an interaction between adiponectin and heavy metals was identified in the relationship between these metals and CD31+/CD42a−. In conclusion, these findings suggest that Pb and Cd exposure may have an adverse effect on adiponectin, and it may play a role in the link between heavy metal exposure and the dysfunction of vascular endothelial cells. Future studies are needed to establish whether a causal relationship exists.

As one of the most common alkylphenols, 4-tertiary-octylphenol (4-tOP) is commonly used in many consumer products. Our previous epidemiological study revealed a negative correlation between serum 4-tOP levels and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), which serves as a biomarker of arteriosclerosis. We aimed to explore the role of apoptotic microparticles, markers of vascular endothelial cell function, in the 4-tOP and CIMT connection. To investigate this, we enrolled 886 Taiwanese adolescents and young adults (aged 12–30 years) and examined the relationships among serum 4-tOP levels, apoptotic microparticles (CD31+/CD42a−, CD31+/CD42a+), and CIMT. Our results showed negative associations among serum 4-tOP levels, both apoptotic microparticles, and CIMT in multiple linear regression analysis. The odds ratios for CIMT (≥75th percentile) and the natural logarithm of 4-tOP were highest when both CD31+/CD42a− and CD31+/CD42a+ were greater than the 50th percentile. Conversely, the odds ratios were lowest when both CD31+/CD42a− and CD31+/CD42a+ were less than the 50th percentile. In the structural equation model, we demonstrated that serum 4-tOP levels were negatively correlated with CIMT and indirectly and negatively correlated with CIMT through both apoptotic microparticles. In conclusion, our study reported the inverse association between 4-tOP apoptotic microparticles and CIMT in a young Taiwanese population. Further experimental studies are needed to clarify these associations.

To develop accurate and accessible prediction methods for assessing pathologic response following NICT prior to surgery, we conducted a retrospective study including 137 patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) who underwent surgery after two cycles of NICT between January 2019 and March 2022 at our center. We collected clinical parameters to evaluate the dynamic changes in the primary tumor. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to determine the correlations between these parameters and the pathologic response of the primary tumor. Subsequently, we constructed prediction models for pCR and MPR using multivariate logistic regression. The MPR prediction Model 2 was internally validated using bootstrapping and externally validated using an independent cohort from our center. The univariate logistic analysis revealed significant differences in clinical parameters reflecting tumor regression among patients with varying pathologic responses. The clinical models based on these assessments demonstrated excellent predictive performance, with the training cohort achieving a C-index of 0.879 for pCR and 0.912 for MPR, while the testing cohort also achieved a C-index of 0.912 for MPR. Notably, the MPR prediction Model 2, with a threshold cut-off of 0.74, exhibited 92.7% specificity and greater than 70% sensitivity, indicating a low rate of underestimating residual tumors. In conclusion, our study demonstrated the high accuracy of clinical assessment-based models in pathologic response prediction, aiding in decision-making regarding organ preservation and radiotherapy adjustments after induction immunochemotherapy.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), gastric cancer (GC) is the fourth leading cause of tumor-related mortality globally and one of the most prevalent malignant tumors. To better understand the role of tumor-infiltrating B cells (TIBs) in GC, this work used single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-Seq) and bulk RNA sequencing (bulk RNA-Seq) data to identify candidate hub genes. Both scRNA-Seq and bulk RNA-Seq data for stomach adenocarcinoma (STAD) were obtained from the GEO and TCGA databases, respectively. Using scRNA-seq data, the FindNeighbors and FindClusters tools were used to group the cells into distinct groups. Immune cell clusters were sought in the massive RNA-seq expression matrix using the single-sample gene set enrichment analysis (ssGSEA). The expression profiles were used in Weighted Gene Coexpression Network Analysis (WGCNA) to build TCGA’s gene coexpression networks. Next, univariate Cox regression, LASSO regression, and Kaplan–Meier analyses were used to identify hub genes in scRNA-seq data from sequential B-cell analyses. Finally, we examined the correlation between the hub genes and TIBs utilizing the TISIDB database. We confirmed the immune-related markers in clinical validation samples using reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and immunohistochemistry (IHC). 15 cell clusters were classified in the scRNA-seq database. According to the WGCNA findings, the green module is most associated with cancer and B cells. The intersection of 12 genes in two separate datasets (scRNA and bulk) was attained for further analysis. However, survival studies revealed that increased C-X-C motif chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) expression was linked to worse overall survival. CXCR4 expression is correlated with active, immature, and memory B cells in STAD were identified. Finally, RT-PCR and IHC assays verified that in GC, CXCR4 is overexpressed, and its expression level correlates with TIBs. We used scRNA-Seq and bulk RNA-Seq to study STAD’s cellular composition. We found that CXCR4 is highly expressed by TIBs in GC, suggesting that it may serve as a hub gene for these cells and a starting point for future research into the molecular mechanisms by which these immune cells gain access to tumors and potentially identify therapeutic targets.

Danshen has been widely used for the treatment of central nervous system diseases. We investigated the effect of dihydroisotanshinone I (DT), a compound extracted from Danshen, as well as the corresponding mechanisms in an in vitro-based 6-OHDA-induced Parkinson’s disease (PD) model. SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cell lines were pretreated with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) and challenged with DT. Subsequently, the cell viability and levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and caspase-3 were analyzed. The effect of DT on the 6-OHDA-treated SH-SY5Y cells and the expression of the core circadian clock genes were measured using a real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Our results indicated that DT attenuated the 6-OHDA-induced cell death in the SH-SY5Y cells and suppressed ROS and caspase-3. Moreover, DT reversed both the RNA and protein levels of BMAL1 and SIRT1 in the 6-OHDA-treated SH-SY5Y cells. Additionally, the SIRT1 inhibitor attenuated the effect of DT on BMAL1 and reduced the cell viability. The DT and SIRT1 activators activated SIRT1 and BMAL1, and then reduced the death of the SH-SY5Y cells damaged by 6-OHDA. SIRT1 silencing was enhanced by DT and resulted in a BMAL1 downregulation and a reduction in cell viability. In conclusion, our investigation suggested that DT reduces cell apoptosis, including an antioxidative effect due to a reduction in ROS, and regulates the circadian genes by enhancing SIRT1 and suppressing BMAL1. DT may possess novel therapeutic potential for PD in the future, but further in vivo studies are still needed.

FAR1-RELATED SEQUENCE (FRS) transcription factors are generated by transposases and play vital roles in plant growth and development, light signaling transduction, phytohormone response, and stress resistance. FRSs have been described in various plant species. However, FRS family members and their functions remain poorly understood in vegetative crops such as potato (Solanum tuberosum, St). In the present study, 20 putative StFRS proteins were identified in potato via genome-wide analysis. They were non-randomly localized to eight chromosomes and phylogenetic analysis classified them into six subgroups along with FRS proteins from Arabidopsis and tomato. Conserved protein motif, protein domain, and gene structure analyses supported the evolutionary relationships among the FRS proteins. Analysis of the cis-acting elements in the promoters and the expression profiles of StFRSs in various plant tissues and under different stress treatments revealed the spatiotemporal expression patterns and the potential roles of StFRSs in phytohormonal and stress responses. StFRSs were differentially expressed in the cultivar “Xisen 6”, which is exposed to a variety of stresses. Hence, these genes may be critical in regulating abiotic stress. Elucidating the StFRS functions will lay theoretical and empirical foundations for the molecular breeding of potato varieties with high light use efficiency and stress resistance.

The adsorption and detachment processes of n-dodecane (C12H26) molecules were studied on silica surfaces with variable surface chemistry (Q2, Q3, Q4 environments), using molecular dynamics simulations. The area density of the silanol groups varied from 9.4 to 0 per nm2. The shrinking of the oil–water–solid contact line was a key step for the oil detachment, due to water diffusion on the three-phase contact line. The simulation results showed that oil detachment was easier and faster on a perfect Q3 silica surface which had (≡Si(OH))-type silanol groups, due to the H-bond formation between the water and silanol groups. When the surfaces contained more Q2 crystalline type which had (≡Si(OH)2)-type silanol groups, less oil detached, due to the formations of H-bonds among the silanol groups. There were no silanol groups on the Si-OH 0 surface. Water cannot diffuse on the water–oil–silica contact line, and oil cannot detach from the Q4 surface. The detachment efficiency of oil from the silica surface not only depended on the area density, but also on the types of silanol groups. The density and type of silanol groups depend on the crystal cleavage plane, particle size, roughness, and humidity.

A one-step sulfurization method to fabricate Ni3S2 nanowires (Ni3S2 NWs) directly on a Ni foam (NF) was developed as a simple, low-cost synthesis method for use as a supercapacitor (SC), aimed at optimizing energy storage. Ni3S2 NWs have high specific capacity and are considered a promising electrode material for SCs; however, their poor electrical conductivity and low chemical stability limit their applications. In this study, highly hierarchical three-dimensional porous Ni3S2 NWs were grown directly on NF by a hydrothermal method. The feasibility of the use of Ni3S2/NF as a binder-free electrode for achieving high-performance SCs was examined. Ni3S2/NF exhibited a high specific capacity (255.3 mAh g−1 at a current density of 3 A g−1), good rate capability (2.9 times higher than that of the NiO/NF electrode), and competitive cycling performance (capacity retention of specific capacity of 72.17% after 5000 cycles at current density of 20 A g−1). Owing to its simple synthesis process and excellent performance as an electrode material for SCs, the developed multipurpose Ni3S2 NWs electrode is expected to be a promising electrode for SC applications. Furthermore, the synthesis method of self-growing Ni3S2 NW electrodes on 3D NF via hydrothermal reactions could potentially be applied to the fabrication of SC electrodes using a variety of other transition metal compounds.

Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) dams are critical infrastructure, playing an important role in economic and social development. However, dam failure can cause great losses. To mitigate hazards, studies of methods to deal with the uncertainty involved in the comprehensive evaluation process of the safety state of RCC dams are hot issues. Interval number theory is applied to quantify the uncertainty in this study. A comprehensive evaluation indicator system is explored, an approach to allocating the indicator weight rationally is proposed, and a comprehensive evaluation model is established. Comprehensive evaluation standards are developed. An RCC dam in China is used to illustrate the applicability of this comprehensive evaluation method based on interval number theory. The results indicate that the method and models proposed are suitable for comprehensively evaluating the safety state of RCC dams and can be used as a new procedure to monitor the safety of an RCC dam.

Statins, the intestinal cholesterol transporter inhibitor (ezetimibe), and PCSK9 inhibitors can reduce serum LDL-C levels, leading to a significant reduction in cardiovascular events. However, these events cannot be fully prevented even when maintaining very low LDL-C levels. Hypertriglyceridemia and reduced HDL-C are known as residual risk factors for ASCVD. Hypertriglyceridemia and/or low HDL-C can be treated with fibrates, nicotinic acids, and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Fibrates were demonstrated to be PPARα agonists and can markedly lower serum TG levels, yet were reported to cause some adverse effects, including an increase in the liver enzyme and creatinine levels. Recent megatrials of fibrates have shown negative findings on the prevention of ASCVD, which were supposed to be due to their low selectivity and potency for binding to PPAR α. To overcome the off-target effects of fibrates, the concept of a selective PPARα modulator (SPPARMα) was proposed. Kowa Company, Ltd. (Tokyo, Japan), has developed pemafibrate (K-877). Compared with fenofibrate, pemafibrate showed more favorable effects on the reduction of TG and an increase in HDL-C. Fibrates worsened liver and kidney function test values, although pemafibrate showed a favorable effect on liver function test values and little effect on serum creatinine levels and eGFR. Minimal drug–drug interactions of pemafibrate with statins were observed. While most of the fibrates are mainly excreted from the kidney, pemafibrate is metabolized in the liver and excreted into the bile. It can be used safely even in patients with CKD, without a significant increase in blood concentration. In the megatrial of pemafibrate, PROMINENT, for dyslipidemic patients with type 2 diabetes, mild-to-moderate hypertriglyceridemia, and low HDL-C and LDL-C levels, the incidence of cardiovascular events did not decrease among those receiving pemafibrate compared to those receiving the placebo; however, the incidence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease was lower. Pemafibrate may be superior to conventional fibrates and applicable to CKD patients. This current review summarizes the recent findings on pemafibrate.

The largest Precambrian gas field in China has been found in the central Sichuan Basin. It is assumed as a mound-shoal microfacies-controlled dolomite reservoir. Recently, a large strike-slip fault system has been identified in the gas field that needs further study of its effect on the Ediacaran reservoirs for highly efficient exploitation of the gas field. For this contribution, we study the matrix reservoir and fractured reservoir along the strike-slip fault damage zones by the cores, FMI (Formation MicroScanner Image) and logging interpretation data, seismic description and production data. It has shown that the matrix reservoir is tight (porosity less than 3%, permeability less than 0.5 mD) that cannot support economical production by conventional exploitation technology in the deep subsurface. On the other hand, the porosity and permeability of the Ediacaran fractured reservoirs could be increased more than one time and 1–3 orders of magnitude. Except for a few localized fracture zones, the fracture elements and fractured reservoirs show a paw-law distribution with the distance to the fault core. Furthermore, the fault effect is more favorable for the increase in the porosity and permeability of the matrix reservoir in the intraplatform than in the platform margin. The overlapping of mound-shoal microfacies, fracturing and karstification could result in large-scale “sweet spots” of the fractured reservoirs in the fault damage zone. The “sweet spot” of fractured reservoir in the fault damage zone is a new favorable exploitation target in the deep central Sichuan Basin.

(1) Background: The study investigated whether the ankle–brachial index (ABI) and pulse wave velocity (baPWV) could reflect the severity of small vessel disease (SVD) and large artery atherosclerosis (LAA). (2) Methods: A total of 956 consecutive patients diagnosed with ischemic stroke were prospectively enrolled from July 2016 to December 2017. SVD severity and LAA stenosis grades were evaluated via magnetic resonance imaging and carotid duplex ultrasonography. Correlation coefficients were calculated between the ABI/baPWV and measurement values. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was performed to determine predictive potential. (3) Results: Among the 820 patients included in the final analysis, the stenosis grade of extracranial and intracranial vessels was inversely correlated with the ABI (p < 0.001, respectively) and positively correlated with the baPWV (p < 0.001 and p = 0.004, respectively). Abnormal ABI, not baPWV, independently predicted the presence of moderate (adjusted odds ratio, aOR: 2.18, 95% CI: 1.31–3.63) to severe (aOR: 5.59, 95% CI: 2.21–14.13) extracranial vessel stenosis and intracranial vessel stenosis (aOR: 1.89, 95% CI: 1.15–3.11). Neither the ABI nor baPWV was independently associated with SVD severity. (4) Conclusions: ABI is better than baPWV in screening for and identifying the existence of cerebral large vessel disease, but neither test is a good predictor of cerebral SVD severity.

In order to provide early selection indicators for the breeding of plants used for producing tea seed oil or harvesting tea, we investigated the relationships between flower morphology and fruit yields in tea plants. We analyzed 106 tea varieties to determine the relationships between flower morphological traits and fruit yields. Notably, the homogeneity of flower traits within the same tea plant variety was found to be very high. The average length and width measurements of certain phenotypic traits of tea plants, including pistil length, stamen length, stamen bundle inner width, stamen bundle outer width, and stigma width, were 11.8, 10.9, 2.5, 15.0, 3.7 mm, respectively. In this study, the flower traits that affect fruit yield appear to be related to the difficulty of pollination by insects (e.g., bees), in terms of their contacting the stigma. In 2013, three phenotypic trait variables showed significant effects on yield; namely, the stamen bundle outer width (negative), stigma width (positive), and stigma width minus the stamen bundle inner width (positive). In 2015, only the stamen bundle outer width had a significant negative effect on yield. Regarding pollen viability, in the TTC (2,3,5-triphenyl tetrazolium chloride) staining test, about 84% of the considered tea varieties presented pollen viability exceeding 70%. This indicates that most tea pollen has the ability to germinate normally after contact with the cross-pollinated stigma. The yields of all of the tea varieties exhibited a positively skewed distribution in 2013 and 2015. Although our results indicate that flowers in the anther superior group tend to produce fewer fruits than flowers in the stigma superior group in 2013, in the analysis of the effect of traits on yield, there were no significant differences in the relative positions of stigmas and anthers. In conclusion, we determined that the main trait affecting fruit yield is stamen bundle outer width, while the secondary trait affecting fruit yield is stigma width. However, the efficacy of the stigma width may also be affected by the position of the stigma relative to the anther and the stamen bundle inner width. These two traits have the potential to be used as reference indicators for early selection in future breeding programs.

(1) Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a significant health problem and is associated with dyslipidemia; however, the association between glycative stress, in terms of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and atherogenic dyslipidemia in hyperlipidemic patients with and without DM has rarely been reported. (2) Methods: We prospectively recruited 949 hyperlipidemic patients from the Lipid Clinic of the National Taiwan University Hospital. HbA1c and fasting serum lipids, including total cholesterol (TC), high- and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C and LDL-C), small dense LDL-C (sdLDL-C), very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C), triglycerides, and advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), were measured. After fasting for 10–14 h, all subjects except those with DM underwent a standard oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) with 75 g of glucose loading. All subjects were asked to discontinue the use of lipid-lowering agents for 8 weeks before recruitment. (3) Results: Patients with DM had a higher prevalence of hypertension and higher levels of triglyceride, TC/HDL-C ratio, AGEs, VLDL-C, and sdLDL-C. Among patients with higher HbA1c, the serum VLDL-C, AGEs, and TC/HDL-C ratio were significantly higher than those with lower HbA1c. After adjustment for covariates, multiple logistic regression analyses revealed different groups of dysglycemia with higher HbA1c had a higher odds ratio for TC/HDL-C ≥ 5, sdLDL-C ≥ 75th percentile, VLDL-C ≥ 75th percentile and AGEs ≥ 75th percentile. (4) Conclusions: A higher HbA1c was associated with a significant increase in the risk of atherogenic dyslipidemia and AGEs levels in patients with hyperlipidemia. The findings can be very promising in clinical application.

Background: Exposure to lead and cadmium has been linked to changes in lipid metabolism and the development of arteriosclerosis, but the role of lipoprotein profiles in this relationship is not well understood, including the potential role of novel lipid biomarkers. Methods: In this study, we enrolled 736 young Taiwanese subjects aged 12 to 30 years to assess the correlation between urine levels of lead and cadmium, lipoprotein profiles, and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT). Results: Higher levels of lead and cadmium were significantly associated with higher levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), small dense LDL-C (sdLDL-C), LDL-triglyceride (LDL-TG), and CIMT. Participants with higher levels of lead and cadmium had the highest mean values of CIMT, LDL-C, sdLDL-C, and LDL-TG. In a structural equation model, lead had a direct and indirect association with CIMT through LDL-C and sdLDL-C, whereas cadmium had a direct association with CIMT and an indirect association through LDL-C. Conclusion: Our results suggest higher levels of lead and cadmium are associated with abnormal lipid profiles and increased CIMT. These heavy metals could have additive effects on lipids and CIMT, and the relationship between them may be mediated by lipoprotein levels. Further research is needed to determine the causal relationship.

Sandwich panels are often subjected to unpredictable impacts and crashes in applications. The core type and impactor shape affect their impact response. This paper investigates the responses of five tandem Nomex honeycomb sandwich panels with different core-types under low-velocity-impact conditions with flat and hemispherical impactors. From the force response and impact displacement, gradient-tandem and foam-filled structures can improve the impact resistance of sandwich panels. Compared with the single-layer sandwich panel, the first peak of contact force of the foam-gradient-filled tandem honeycomb sandwich panels increased by 34.84%, and maximum impact displacement reduced by 50.98%. The resistance of gradient-tandem Nomex honeycomb sandwich panels under low-velocity impact outperformed uniform-tandem structures. Foam-filled structures change the impact responses of the tandem sandwich panels. Impact damage with a flat impactor was more severe than the hemispherical impactor. The experimental results are helpful in the design of tandem Nomex honeycomb sandwich panels.

Gastric cancers (GCs) are malignant tumors with a high incidence that threaten global public health. Despite advances in GC diagnosis and treatment, the prognosis remains poor. Therefore, the mechanisms underlying GC progression need to be identified to develop prognostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Ubiquitination, a post-translational modification that regulates the stability, activity, localization, and interactions of target proteins, can be reversed by deubiquitinases (DUBs), which can remove ubiquitin monomers or polymers from modified proteins. The dysfunction of DUBs has been closely linked to tumorigenesis in various cancer types, and targeting certain DUBs may provide a potential option for cancer therapy. Multiple DUBs have been demonstrated to function as oncogenes or tumor suppressors in GC. In this review, we summarize the DUBs involved in GC and their associated upstream regulation and downstream mechanisms and present the benefits of targeting DUBs for GC treatment, which could provide new insights for GC diagnosis and therapy.

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is the most frequent genetic disorder resulting in increased low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels from childhood, leading to premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) if left untreated. FH diagnosis is based on clinical criteria and/or genetic testing and its prevalence is estimated as being up to 1:300,000–400,000 for the homozygous and ~1:200–300 for the heterozygous form. Apart from its late diagnosis, FH is also undertreated, despite the available lipid-lowering therapies. In addition, elevated lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) (>50 mg/dL; 120 nmol/L), mostly genetically determined, has been identified as an important cardiovascular risk factor with prevalence rate of ~20% in the general population. Novel Lp(a)-lowering therapies have been recently developed and their cardiovascular efficacy is currently investigated. Although a considerable proportion of FH patients is also diagnosed with high Lp(a) levels, there is a debate whether these two entities are associated. Nevertheless, Lp(a), particularly among patients with FH, has been established as a significant cardiovascular risk factor. In this narrative review, we present up-to-date evidence on the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of both FH and elevated Lp(a) with a special focus on their association and joint effect on ASCVD risk.

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between sarcopenia and injury events (falls, fractures, hospitalization, disability, and death). This study systemically searched the literature from Embase, PubMed, MEDLINE, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library and analyzed the collected literature using the random effects model to demonstrate the relationship between sarcopenia and injury events. This study followed the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and collected a total of 38 prospective studies, and the results showed that, when compared to robust individuals, the risk of injury events for older individuals with sarcopenia was significantly higher for fractures (HR = 9.66, CI: 5.07–18.38), hospital admissions (HR = 11.80, CI: 4.86–28.65), and death (HR = 9.57, CI: 3.17–28.94). In consideration of the negative impact of sarcopenia on the subsequent health of older adults, professional nursing personnel should assess older adults for sarcopenia as early as possible and propose relevant care policies to further reduce negative health impacts.

Semantic segmentation for remote sensing images (RSIs) plays an important role in many applications, such as urban planning, environmental protection, agricultural valuation, and military reconnaissance. With the boom in remote sensing technology, numerous RSIs are generated; this is difficult for current complex networks to handle. Efficient networks are the key to solving this challenge. Many previous works aimed at designing lightweight networks or utilizing pruning and knowledge distillation methods to obtain efficient networks, but these methods inevitably reduce the ability of the resulting models to characterize spatial and semantic features. We propose an effective deep supervision-based simple attention network (DSANet) with spatial and semantic enhancement losses to handle these problems. In the network, (1) a lightweight architecture is used as the backbone; (2) deep supervision modules with improved multiscale spatial detail (MSD) and hierarchical semantic enhancement (HSE) losses synergistically strengthen the obtained feature representations; and (3) a simple embedding attention module (EAM) with linear complexity performs long-range relationship modeling. Experiments conducted on two public RSI datasets (the ISPRS Potsdam dataset and Vaihingen dataset) exhibit the substantial advantages of the proposed approach. Our method achieves 79.19% mean intersection over union (mIoU) on the ISPRS Potsdam test set and 72.26% mIoU on the Vaihingen test set with speeds of 470.07 FPS on 512 × 512 images and 5.46 FPS on 6000 × 6000 images using an RTX 3090 GPU.

The largest Precambrian gasfield in China has been found from the Ediacaran (Sinian) carbonates in the central Sichuan Basin. The deep ancient reservoirs were generally attributed to the high-energy mound-shoal body in the carbonate platform. However, there is still little understanding on the distribution of the mound-shoal bodies that hampers further gas exploitation from the deep subsurface. Based on the seismic data, a large strike-slip fault system was identified by new 3D seismic data in the central Sichuan Basin. Further, it was found that the strike-slip fault had some effects on the mound-shoal bodies of the Ediacaran Dengying Formation. First, the platform margin was divided by strike-slip faults into three distinct segments to show two weak-rimmed margins and one interbedded rimmed margin. Second, the platform margin could be offset or migrated with the strike-slip faults. Third, there is varied margin thickness across the strike-slip fault zone. In the inner platform, more carbonate mound-shoal bodies developed behind the weak-rimmed margin that was divided by the strike-slip fault zones. In addition, the mound-shoal bodies may be separated by faulted sag. Further, the mound-shoal bodies may have developed along the faulted higher position in one side of the strike-slip fault zone. These patterns of the mound-shoal bodies suggest that the strike-slip fault had an important role in the sedimentary microfacies’ diversity in the intracratonic carbonates. The low displacement of the strike-slip fault is chiefly responsible for a weaker controlling effect on the microfacies change in the intracratonic basin rather than other tectonic settings.

Groundwater quality in the Muling–Xingkai Plain (MXP) is closely related to food security and human health. The chemical composition of groundwater in MXP has attracted great attention. A total of 168 groundwater samples were collected in MXP, and principal component analysis, chemical ion analysis and stable isotopic analysis were used to explore key factors affecting the chemical composition and hydrochemical evolution process of groundwater. Results show sources of chemical ions in groundwater are silicate minerals, carbonate minerals and domestic sewage. Domestic sewage is responsible for groundwater with high levels of Cl−, SO42− and NO3−, but a reduction environment can lead to groundwater with a high level of NH4+ due to nitrification. Human activity and soil media together influence groundwater chemical composition. Groundwater with a high level of chemical ions is mainly collected from wells near river channels, where coarse-textured soils are overlying aquifers. The black soil far away from river channels can retard the infiltration of wastewater. Agricultural activities do not directly lead to deterioration of groundwater qualities, and agricultural non-point-source pollution does not occur in MXP. Nearly 70% of the population in MXP is living in the southern plain, where the influence of sewage on groundwater chemical composition is obvious. Thus, shallow groundwater far away from river channels is the best choice for irrigation. Some measures should be implemented to control the discharge of domestic sewage for the protection of groundwater. In addition, it is necessary to avoid the transformation of the redox environment of groundwater in the northern plain.

The introductory pharmacy practice experiences (IPPE) in Taiwan, which are traditionally conducted in physical hospital settings, incorporated up to 30% distance learning from May 2021 due to Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). A web-based cross-sectional survey was adopted to investigate pharmacy students’ experiences and perceptions of transitioning from in-hospital internships to distance learning due to COVID-19 in the pharmacy department of a university in Southern Taiwan. We analyzed the results to discover factors that significantly affected students’ perceptions of transitioning from in-hospital internships to distance learning. In total, 81 interns from the university’s pharmacy department responded to the questionnaire. Approximately half of the participants felt happy when they learned, before the internship began, that the internship would be partially replaced with distance learning. The overall satisfaction rate was 67.9%, and no significant differences was observed in students’ satisfaction between hospital size or distance-learning time. However, more students in the medical center felt they had insufficient time to finish assignments compared to those in the regional hospitals, and the students who had 11–15 days of distance learning felt that they interacted more smoothly with their peers compared to those who had other durations. Program designers should make distance internship courses more student-centered, with a focus on increasing interactions between students, teachers, and peers to compensate for the lack of physical presence.

Renal dysfunction is common after stroke. We aimed to investigate the clinical predictability of the ankle–brachial index (ABI) and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) on poststroke renal deterioration. A total of 956 consecutive participants with acute ischemic stroke between 1 July 2016, and 31 December 2017 were enrolled and a final of 637 patients were recruited for final analysis. By using the group-based trajectory model (GBTM), the patients’ renal function trajectories were grouped into the low, intermediate, and high categories (LC, IC, and HC). Significant deterioration in the slope was noted in the IC (p < 0.001) and LC (p = 0.002) groups but was nonsignificant in the HC (p = 0.998) group. Abnormal ABI (ABI ≤ 0.9) was independently related to LC (adjusted odds ratio: 2.40; 95% CI, 1.16–4.95; p = 0.019) and was also independently associated with increased risks of a ≥30% decline in eGFR (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 2.28; 95% CI, 1.29–4.05; p = 0.005), a doubling of serum creatinine (aHR, 3.60; 95% CI, 1.93–8.34; p < 0.001) and ESRD (HR, 3.28; 95% CI, 1.23–8.74; p = 0.018). However, baPWV did not have a significant relationship with any of the renal outcomes. Patients with a lower ABI during acute stroke should receive regular renal function tests and should be closely monitored to improve poststroke renal care.

Purpose: The transition of Taiwan from an aging to a super-aging society has come with a cost as more elderly now suffer from cognitive impairment. The main purpose of our study was to investigate if early detection can be developed so that timely intervention can be instituted. We analyzed the correlation of cognitive function with ocular physiology and visual functions between senior citizens aged 60 years or older in Taiwan. Methods: Thirty-six healthy subjects were recruited for the study. Addenbrooke’s cognitive examination III (ACE-III), binocular functions (including objective and subjective refraction, distance and near dissociated phoria, stereopsis, contrast sensitivity, adult developmental eye movement (ADEM), and ocular physiology (by using optical coherence tomography, OCT, and macular pigment measurement, MPS) were performed, and the data were analyzed via independent t-test, chi-square test, Pearson correlation, linear regression, and ROC (receiver operating characteristic) curve. Results: Data analysis showed that (1) patients with poor eye movement had a strong correlation with the total score and all dimensions of cognitive functions, (2) the thickness of the macula had a strong correlation with attention and memory, and (3) patients with poor eye movement and poor stereopsis in combination with thinner inferior macula appeared to have lower cognitive abilities. Discussion and Conclusions: Cognitive dysfunction is not readily identified during the early stage of cognitive decline. The use of simple and inexpensive ADEM or stereopsis test and comparing the OCT results that are popular in optometry clinics for reference can be diagnostic in identifying patients with mild cognitive impairments. With the combined use of macular pigment density or retinal thickness measurements, it was possible to effectively predict the early degradation of cognition.

Selective laser sintering (SLS) is one of the most commonly used methods in additive manufacturing, due to its high prototyping speed and applicability to various materials. In the present work, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed to study the thermodynamic behaviors of the planar stacked nanoparticles (NPs) model and explore the potential capability of the SLS process with nano-sized metal powders in the zero-gravity space environment. A multi-particle model of titanium–aluminum (Ti–Al) core–shell NP with a particle radius of 50 Å was constructed to investigate the characteristics of the melted pattern during sintering. Two patterns with different spatial densities were considered to study the influence of particle stacking on the melting process. Various core volume fractions and heating rates were examined to investigate their effects on the quality of the final sintered product. The stacked-NPs models with core volume fractions (CVFs) of 3%, 12%, and 30% were linearly heated up to 1100 K from room temperature (298 K) with heating rates of 0.04, 0.2, 0.5, and 1.0 K ps−1. The initial fusion temperature and final sintering temperature for each stacking pattern were obtained via the validation from the radial distribution function, mean squared displacement, and the radius of the gyration analysis. The 30% CVF yields the largest neck size before the melting point, while beyond the melting point, a larger core helps delay the formation of the fully-melted products. It is observed that using the close-packed stacked-NPs model under a slow heating rate (long melting duration) would help form a stable, completely sintered product with a relatively low final sintering temperature.

Double-hit (DH) genetics induces a reduction in the complete remission (CR) and, consequently, in poor overall survival (OS) in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) patients. Unfortunately, DH identification is time-consuming. Here, we retrospectively reviewed 92 newly diagnosed DLBCL patients, stratified them into the DH (n = 14) and non-DH groups (n = 78), and compared their clinical features and outcomes. The results revealed that the DH group had a higher percentage of bulky disease than the non-DH group (64.3% vs. 28.2%; p = 0.013). More patients in the DH group tested positive for double expresser (DE) (50.0% vs. 21.8%; p = 0.044). The three-year OS rates of patients with and without DH were 33.3% and 52.2%, respectively (p = 0.016). Importantly, advance stage and multiple comorbidities were correlated with a high mortality rate in multivariate analysis. Furthermore, by combining DE and the bulky disease, a specificity of 89.7% for DH prediction was achieved. In summary, DH genetics, not DE immunopositivity, could be a factor for an inferior OS in DLBCL. A combination of bulky disease and a positive DE immunophenotype could facilitate DH genetics prediction in newly diagnosed DLBCL patients.

In this paper, the multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) radar signal processing algorithm is efficiently employed as an anticollision methodology for the identification of multiple chipless radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags. Tag-identifying methods for conventional chipped RFID tags rely mostly on the processing capabilities of application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs). In cases where more than one chipless tag exists in the same area, traditional methods are not sufficient to successfully read and distinguish the IDs, while the direction of each chipless tag can be obtained by applying MIMO technology to the backscattering signal. In order to read the IDs of the tags, beamforming is used to change the main beam direction of the antenna array and to receive the tag backscattered signal. On this basis, the RCS of the tags can be retrieved, and associated IDs can be identified. In the simulation, two tags with different IDs were placed away from each other. The IDs of the tags were successfully identified using the presented algorithm. The simulation result shows that tags with a distance of 0.88 m in azimuth can be read by a MIMO reader with eight antennas from 3 m away.

The SPR phenomenon results in an abrupt change in the optical phase such that one can measure the phase shift of the reflected light as a sensing parameter. Moreover, many studies have demonstrated that the phase changes more acutely than the intensity, leading to a higher sensitivity to the refractive index change. However, currently, the optical phase cannot be measured directly because of its high frequency; therefore, investigators usually have to use complicated techniques for the extraction of phase information. In this study, we propose a simple and effective strategy for measuring the SPR phase shift based on phase-shift interferometry. In this system, the polarization-dependent interference signals are recorded simultaneously by a pixelated polarization camera in a single snapshot. Subsequently, the phase information can be effortlessly acquired by a phase extraction algorithm. Experimentally, the proposed phase-sensitive SPR sensor was successfully applied for the detection of small molecules of glyphosate, which is the most frequently used herbicide worldwide. Additionally, the sensor exhibited a detection limit of 15 ng/mL (0.015 ppm). Regarding its simplicity and effectiveness, we believe that our phase-sensitive SPR system presents a prospective method for acquiring phase signals.
