As part of the research in the recently ended project SANET II, we were trying to create a new machine-learning system without a teacher. This system was designed to recognize DDoS attacks in real time, based on adaptation to real-time arbitrary traffic and with the ability to be embedded into the hardware implementation of network probes. The reason for considering this goal was our hands-on experience with the high-speed SANET network, which interconnects Slovak universities and high schools and also provides a connection to the Internet. Similar to any other public-facing infrastructure, it is often the target of DDoS attacks. In this article, we are extending our previous research, mainly by dealing with the use of various statistical parameters for DDoS attack detection. We tested the coefficients of Variation, Kurtosis, Skewness, Autoregression, Correlation, Hurst exponent, and Kullback–Leibler Divergence estimates on traffic captures of different types of DDoS attacks. For early machine recognition of the attack, we have proposed several detection functions that use the response of the investigated statistical parameters to the start of a DDoS attack. The proposed detection methods are easily implementable for monitoring actual IP traffic.

Three models of abundance dynamics for forest insects that depict the development of outbreak populations were analyzed. We studied populations of the Siberian silkmoth Dendrolimus sibiricus Tschetv. in Siberia and the Far East of Russia, as well as a population of the pine looper Bupalus piniarius L. in Thuringia, Germany. The first model (autoregression) characterizes the mechanism where current population density is dependent on population densities in previous k years. The second model considers an outbreak as analogous to a first-order phase transition in physical systems and characterizes the outbreak as a transition through a potential barrier from a low-density state to a high-density state. The third model treats an outbreak as an effect of stochastic resonance influenced by a cyclical factor such as solar activity and the “noise” of weather parameters. The discussion focuses on the prediction effectiveness of abundance dynamics and outbreak development for each model.

Short-term load forecasting (STLF) is critical for the energy industry. Accurate predictions of future electricity demand are necessary to ensure power systems’ reliable and efficient operation. Various STLF models have been proposed in recent years, each with strengths and weaknesses. This paper comprehensively reviews some STLF models, including time series, artificial neural networks (ANNs), regression-based, and hybrid models. It first introduces the fundamental concepts and challenges of STLF, then discusses each model class’s main features and assumptions. The paper compares the models in terms of their accuracy, robustness, computational efficiency, scalability, and adaptability and identifies each approach’s advantages and limitations. Although this study suggests that ANNs and hybrid models may be the most promising ways to achieve accurate and reliable STLF, additional research is required to handle multiple input features, manage massive data sets, and adjust to shifting energy conditions.

Relatively large deformations of the steel arch support in underground coal mines in the Republic of Serbia present one of the main problems for achieving the planned production of coal. Monitoring of the critical sections of the steel arch support in the underground roadways is necessary to gather quality data for the development of a forecasting model. With a new generation of 3D laser scanners that can be used in potentially explosive environments (ATEX), deformation monitoring is facilitated, while the process of collecting precise data is much shorter. In this paper, we used a combination of grey and stochastic system theory combined with an autoregressive process for processing collected data and the development of a forecasting model of the deformations of the steel arch support. Forecasted data accuracy based on the positions of the markers placed along the internal rim of support construction shows high accuracy with MAPE of 0.2143%. The proposed model can successfully be used by mining engineers in underground coal mines for steel arch support deformations prediction, consequentially optimizing the maintenance plan of the underground roadways and achieving planned production.

This paper considers stationary autoregressive (AR) models with heavy-tailed, general GARCH (G-GARCH) or augmented GARCH noises. Limit theory for the least squares estimator (LSE) of autoregression coefficient ρ=ρn is derived uniformly over stationary values in [0,1), focusing on ρn→1 as sample size n tends to infinity. For tail index α∈(0,4) of G-GARCH innovations, asymptotic distributions of the LSEs are established, which are involved with the stable distribution. The convergence rate of the LSE depends on 1−ρn2, but no condition on the rate of ρn is required. It is shown that, for the tail index α∈(0,2), the LSE is inconsistent, for α=2, logn/(1−ρn2)-consistent, and for α∈(2,4), n1−2/α/(1−ρn2)-consistent. Proofs are based on the point process and the asymptotic properties in AR models with G-GARCH errors. However, this present work provides a bridge between pure stationary and unit-root processes. This paper extends the existing uniform limit theory with three issues: the errors have conditional heteroscedastic variance; the errors are heavy-tailed with tail index α∈(0,4); and no restriction on the rate of ρn is necessary.

Best practice life expectancy has recently been modeled using extreme value theory. In this paper we present the Gumbel autoregressive model of order one—Gumbel AR(1)—as an option for modeling best practice life expectancy. This class of model represents a neat and coherent framework for modeling time series extremes. The Gumbel distribution accounts for the extreme nature of best practice life expectancy, while the AR structure accounts for the temporal dependence in the time series. Model diagnostics and simulation results indicate that these models present a viable alternative to Gaussian AR(1) models when dealing with time series of extremes and merit further exploration.

The paper is concerned with estimation and application of a special stationary integer autoregressive model where multiple binomial thinnings are not independent of one another. Parameter estimation in such models has hitherto been accomplished using method of moments, or nonlinear least squares, but not maximum likelihood. We obtain the conditional distribution needed to implement maximum likelihood. The sampling performance of the new estimator is compared to extant ones by reporting the results of some simulation experiments. An application to a stock-type data set of financial counts is provided and the conditional distribution is used to compare two competing models and in forecasting.

The recent developments in combining point forecasts of day-ahead electricity prices across calibration windows have provided an extremely simple, yet a very efficient tool for improving predictive accuracy. Here, we consider two novel extensions of this concept to probabilistic forecasting: one based on Quantile Regression Averaging (QRA) applied to a set of point forecasts obtained for different calibration windows, the other on a technique dubbed Quantile Regression Machine (QRM), which first averages these point predictions, then applies quantile regression to the combined forecast. Once computed, we combine the probabilistic forecasts across calibration windows by averaging probabilities of the corresponding predictive distributions. Our results show that QRM is not only computationally more efficient, but also yields significantly more accurate distributional predictions, as measured by the aggregate pinball score and the test of conditional predictive ability. Moreover, combining probabilistic forecasts brings further significant accuracy gains.

We conduct an extensive empirical study on the selection of calibration windows for day-ahead electricity price forecasting, which involves six year-long datasets from three major power markets and four autoregressive expert models fitted either to raw or transformed prices. Since the variability of prediction errors across windows of different lengths and across datasets can be substantial, selecting ex-ante one window is risky. Instead, we argue that averaging forecasts across different calibration windows is a robust alternative and introduce a new, well-performing weighting scheme for averaging these forecasts.
