Urban water drainage systems represent complex networks with nonlinear dynamics and different types of interactions. This yields an involved modeling problem for which different off-line simulation approaches are available. Nevertheless, these approaches cannot be used for real-time simulations, i.e., running in parallel to weather now- and forecasts and enabling the monitoring and automatic control of urban water drainage systems. Alternative approaches, used commonly for automation purposes, involve parameterized linear delay systems, which can be used in real-time but lack the necessary level of detail, which, in particular, is required for adequate flood risk prognostics. Given this setup, in the present paper, an approach for the effective modeling of detailed water drainage systems for real-time applications implemented with the open-source Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) software is addressed and exemplified for a part of the water drainage system of the city of Flensburg in northern Germany. Additionally, a freely available early-warning system prototype is introduced and used to combine weather forcast information on a 2-h prediction horizon with the developed model and available measurements. This prototype is subsequently used for data assimilation using the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) for the considered area in Flensburg.

Batteries are complex systems involving spatially distributed microscopic mechanisms on different time scales whose adequate interplay is essential to ensure a desired functioning. Describing these phenomena yields nonlinearly coupled partial differential equations whose numerical solution requires considerable effort and computation time, making it an infeasible solution for real-time applications. Anyway, having information about the internal electrochemical states of the battery can pave the way for many different advanced monitoring and control strategies with a big potential for improving efficiency and longevity. For such purposes, in the present paper, a combination of a low-order representation of the essential dynamics associated to the internal electrochemical mechanisms based on Dynamic Mode Decomposition for control (DMDc) is proposed to obtain an improved equivalent circuit model (ECM) representation with continuously updated parameters and combined with an extended Kalman Filter (EKF). The model-order reduction step extensively exploits the model structure, yielding a well structured low-order representation without artificial numerical correlations. The performance of the proposed method is illustrated with numerical simulations based on a well-established reference model, showing its potential usefulness in real-time applications requiring knowledge of the internal electrochemical states besides the state-of-charge.

The application of autoencoders in combination with Dynamic Mode Decomposition for control (DMDc) and reduced order observer design as well as Kalman Filter design is discussed for low order state reconstruction of a class of scalar linear diffusion-convection-reaction systems. The general idea and conceptual approaches are developed following recent results on machine-learning based identification of the Koopman operator using autoencoders and DMDc for finite-dimensional discrete-time system identification. The resulting linear reduced order model is combined with a classical Kalman Filter for state reconstruction with minimum error covariance as well as a reduced order observer with very low computational and memory demands. The performance of the two schemes is evaluated and compared in terms of the approximated L2 error norm in a numerical simulation study. It turns out, that for the evaluated case study the reduced-order scheme achieves comparable performance with significantly less computational load.

A constructive approach is provided for the reconstruction of stationary and non-stationary patterns in the one-dimensional Gray-Scott model, utilizing measurements of the system state at a finite number of locations. Relations between the parameters of the model and the density of the sensor locations are derived that ensure the exponential convergence of the estimated state to the original one. The designed observer is capable of tracking a variety of complex spatiotemporal behaviors and self-replicating patterns. The theoretical findings are illustrated in particular numerical case studies. The results of the paper can be used for the synchronization analysis of the master–slave configuration of two identical Gray–Scott models coupled via a finite number of spatial points and can also be exploited for the purposes of feedback control applications in which the complete state information is required.

The problem of controlling a spreading process in a two-layer multiplex networks in such a way that the extinction state becomes a global attractor is addressed. The problem is formulated in terms of a Markov-chain based susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) dynamics in a complex multilayer network. The stabilization of the extinction state for the nonlinear discrete-time model by means of appropriate adaptation of system parameters like transition rates within layers and between layers is analyzed using a dominant linear dynamics yielding global stability results. An answer is provided for the central question about the essential changes in the step from a single to a multilayer network with respect to stability criteria and the number of nodes that need to be controlled. The results derived rigorously using mathematical analysis are verified using statical evaluations about the number of nodes to be controlled and by simulation studies that illustrate the stability property of the multilayer network induced by appropriate control action.

The problem of stabilizing the spreading process to a prescribed probability distribution over a complex network is considered, where the dynamics of the nodes in the network is given by discrete-time Markov-chain processes. Conditions for the positioning and identification of actuators and sensors are provided, and sufficient conditions for the exponential stability of the desired distribution are derived. Simulations results for a network of N = 10 6 corroborate our theoretical findings.
