This study compares the heat generated during bone drilling using different protocols and implant systems, first in vitro and then in vivo with an animal model. In the experimental phase, thermal data were collected using an infrared camera while preparing implant beds in bone similes. The heat generated by a one-drill protocol with a new-generation drill bit and the Straumann BLT sequential drilling protocol was evaluated. The experimental study was then replicated in an animal model to assess the impact of these protocols on early osseointegration, measured by bone-to-implant contact (BIC) at three weeks post-surgery for Straumann BLT SLActive and Medentika Quattrocone implants. The results showed the BLT sequential protocol generated significantly more heat during drilling in bone similes compared to the new-generation drill bit. In the animal model, a histological analysis revealed a trend favoring shorter drilling protocols, with reduced drilling times and a potential advantage for osseointegration, though the BIC differences were not statistically significant. These findings suggest that minimizing the number of drilling steps and thermal stress may enhance osseointegration more effectively than advanced implant surface treatments. This aligns with emerging views on the importance of optimized drilling protocols and designs to reduce heat generation and better preserve surrounding bone structure.

This study evaluates the thermal impact of a one-drill protocol for osteotomy preparation in dental implant surgery. Our findings demonstrate a significant reduction in heat generation compared to traditional sequential drilling, suggesting potential benefits for implant osseointegration and patient comfort. Specifically, the one-drill protocol was associated with lower peak temperatures and a reduced duration of elevated temperatures. These findings suggest that the one-drill protocol may contribute to improved implant stability and reduce the risk of thermal-induced bone damage. While further research is needed to confirm these findings in clinical settings, the results of this study provide promising evidence for the potential advantages of the one-drill protocol in dental implant surgery. Additionally, the one-drill protocol may offer simplified surgical workflows and reduced instrument management, potentially leading to improved efficiency and cost-effectiveness in dental implant procedures.

Sequential drilling is a common practice in dental implant surgery aimed at minimizing thermal damage to bone. This study evaluates the thermal effects of sequential drilling and assesses modifications to drilling protocols to manage heat generation. We utilized a custom drill press and artificial bone models to test five drill bits under various protocols, including sequential drilling with different loads, spindle speeds, and peck drilling. Infrared thermography recorded temperature changes during the drilling process, with temperatures monitored at various depths around the osteotomy. The results reveal sequential drilling does not eliminate the thermal damage zone it creates (well over 70 °C). It creates harmful heat to surrounding bone that can spread up to 10 mm from the osteotomy. The first drill used in sequential drilling produces the highest temperatures (over 100 °C), and subsequent drill bits cannot remove the thermal trauma incurred; rather, they add to it. Modifying drill bit design and employing proper drilling techniques, such as reducing drilling RPM and load, can reduce thermal trauma by reducing friction. Inadequate management of heat can lead to prolonged recovery, increased patient discomfort, and potential long-term complications such as impaired bone-to-implant integration and chronic conditions like peri-implantitis. Ensuring healthy bone conditions is critical for successful implant outcomes.

To ensure the prevention of thermal trauma and tissue necrosis during bone drilling in surgical procedures, it is crucial to maintain temperatures below the time- and temperature-dependent threshold of 50 °C for 30 s. However, the absence of a current standard for assessing temperatures attained during bone drilling poses a challenge when comparing findings across different studies. This article aims to address this issue by introducing a standardized testing method for acquiring thermal data during experimental bone drilling. The method requires the use of three controlled variables: infrared thermography, standard bone blocks, and a regulated drilling procedure involving a drill press with irrigation that simulates a surgeon. By utilizing this setup, we can obtain temperature data that can be effectively applied in the evaluation of other variables, such as surgical techniques or drill bit design, and translate the data into bone damage/clinical outcomes. Two surgical drill bits (2.0 mm-diameter twist drill bit and 3.3 mm-diameter multi-step drill bit) are compared using this experimental protocol. The results show the 2.0 mm bit reached significantly higher temperatures compared to the 3.3 mm bit when preparing an osteotomy ( p < 0.05). The 2.0 mm drill bit reached temperatures over 100 °C while the 3.3 mm drill bit did not exceed 50 °C.

Molecular imprinting is an efficient strategy to make the detection of compounds more specific and more selective. This targeted analytical strategy using molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) synthesis needs to obtain the optimized conditions. A selective molecularly imprinted polymer was prepared for caffeic acid (CA) detection after varying the following synthesis parameters: functional monomer type (N-phenylacrylamide, N-PAA or methacrylic acid, MAA), solvent type (acetonitrile/methanol or acetonitrile/toluene), and the polymerization method (UV or thermal initiation). The optimal polymer was obtained using MAA as a functional monomer, acetonitrile/methanol as solvent, and UV polymerization. Morphological characterizations were done for the optimal CA-MIP using mid-infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and nitrogen adsorption. The optimal polymer showed good specificity and selectivity in the presence of interferents (antioxidants having a chemical structure close to CA) in a hydroalcoholic solution. The electrochemical detection of CA was performed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) after the interaction between CA and the optimal MIP in a wine sample. The linear range of the developed method was between 0 and 1.11 mM, the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.13 mM, and the limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.32 mM. HPLC-UV was used to validate the newly developed method. Recovery values were between 104% and 111%.

The Polluscope project aims to better understand the personal exposure to air pollutants in the Paris region. This article is based on one campaign from the project, which was conducted in the autumn of 2019 and involved 63 participants equipped with portable sensors (i.e., NO 2 , BC and PM) for one week. After a phase of data curation, analyses were performed on the results from all participants, as well as on individual participants' data for case studies. A machine learning algorithm was used to allocate the data to different environments (e.g., transportation, indoor, home, office, and outdoor). The results of the campaign showed that the participants' exposure to air pollutants depended very much on their lifestyle and the sources of pollution that may be present in the vicinity. Individuals' use of transportation was found to be associated with higher levels of pollutants, even when the time spent on transport was relatively short. In contrast, homes and offices were environments with the lowest concentrations of pollutants. However, some activities performed in indoor air (e.g., cooking) also showed a high levels of pollution over a relatively short period.

The most used etchant in dental daily practice is the phosphoric acid (P.A.; 37%). However, acid etchants can induce necrosis on the oral mucosa and cause the ulceration of periodontal tissue when a rubber dam is not used. V-prep is a new practical alternative, and it has satisfactory results. It is used as a preparation before the application of a resin-modified glass ionomer composite (RMGIC) to bond the orthodontic brackets. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the V-prep on oral gingival fibroblasts cells by comparing the cell damage and cell viability after the use of V-prep and a conventional phosphoric acid etchant with different application times and concentrations. Therefore, Gingival fibroblasts passage 6 (GFP6) was grown and treated with an acid etchant and V-prep at three different concentrations (1:1, 1:2 and 1:10) for two different application durations (30 s and 1 min). The morphological changes, cell death and cell viability were assessed. Pyknosis, karyolysis, nucleus reversible and irreversible damages and membrane destruction were observed for both of the etchants at the higher concentrations and longer application durations. Mann-Whitney U-tests were used for the statistical analyses. The application of the V-prep for 30 s showed better values than the acid etchant did in the cell damage analysis and cell viability analysis ( p = 0.03). V-prep at a 1:10 concentration applied for a 30 s duration can preserve the viability of gingival fibroblasts cells up to 100%. The toxicity of V-prep is equal or lower than the toxicity of the acid etchant that is commonly used in dentistry. Thus, the V-prep can be used with precautions intra-orally, and it should be applied on the enamel as a gel for 30 s only before it is rinsed and removed.

Caffeic acid (CA) is an efficient antioxidant found in wine and in plants and can be extracted from the by-products of the food industry. A molecularly imprinted polymer specific to caffeic acid (CA-MIP) was prepared by radical polymerization using N -phenylacrylamide as the functional monomer, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the cross-linker, and azobisisobutyronitrile as the initiator, in the presence of CA as the template molecule. The rebinding activities between the polymers and CA were promoted by an indirect method and characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV) using a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE). It is a fast method, which only requires simple and portable instrumentation. The polymer showed a high selectivity toward CA and a good repeatability. CA-MIP was then applied in wine samples spiked with CA, and the results were compared to those obtained by a chromatographic method. With a limit of detection of 0.06 mM in wine, the recovery values confirmed that the method is suitable for further applications.

In many vascular segments, endovascular therapy is the treatment of choice for arteriosclerotic lesions. For the treatment of common femoral artery (CFA) lesions, surgical reconstruction is still considered the gold standard. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of stent angioplasty for the treatment of common femoral artery (CFA) lesions in a real-world population during a two-year follow up. This retrospective, single-center study includes 250 patients requiring treatment with stent angioplasty of CFA lesions. The primary end point was the target lesion revascularization (TLR) rate. Secondary end points were the overall procedural complication rate, the rate of ipsilateral CFA punctures during follow-up, changes in the Rutherford−Becker class (RBC) and ankle−brachial index (ABI), primary patency rates, amputation rate, time to and the type of TLR. A total of 236 interventions (94.4%) were successfully defined as a residual stenosis < 30%. Periinterventionally, there were 23 complications (9.1%), 3 of which had to be treated surgically. Median follow up was 21 months (average 19.2 ± 7.8). In total, 41 patients (16.4%) needed a TLR. The primary patency rate was 90.8%, 81.2% and 72% at 6, 12 and 24 months, respectively. ABI and RBC were significantly better at all time points compared to baseline. During follow up, seven amputations (three minor and four major) had to be performed. More than half of the patients (56.0%) were punctured at the stented CFA during the follow up. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed continued nicotine use and coronary heart disease as predictors for TLR. Stent angioplasty for the treatment of CFA lesions is safe and effective. Further studies are needed to compare this endovascular option with surgical therapy.

This review aims to pin out the importance of developing a technique for rapid detection of antioxidants, based on molecular imprinting techniques. It covers three major areas that have made great progress over the years in the field of research, namely: antioxidants characterization, molecular imprinting and electrochemistry, alone or combined. It also reveals the importance of bringing these three areas together for a good evaluation of antioxidants in a simple or complex medium, based on selectivity and specificity. Although numerous studies have associated antioxidants with molecular imprinting, or antioxidants with electrochemistry, but even electrochemistry with molecular imprinting to valorize different compounds, the growing prominence of antioxidants in the food, medical, and paramedical sectors deserves to combine the three areas, which may lead to innovative industrial applications with satisfactory results for both manufacturers and consumers.

Fabricating future materials by self-assembly of nano-building blocks programmed to generate specific lattices is among the most challenging goals of nanotechnology and has led to the recent concept of patchy particles. We report here a simple strategy to fabricate polystyrene nanoparticles with several silica patches based on the solvent-induced self-assembly of silica/polystyrene monopods. The latter are obtained with morphological yields as high as 99% by seed-growth emulsion polymerization of styrene in the presence of 100 nm silica seeds previously modified with an optimal surface density of methacryloxymethyl groups. In addition, we fabricate "magnetic" silica seeds by silica encapsulation of preformed maghemite supraparticles. The polystyrene pod, i.e., surface nodule, serves as a sticky point when the monopods are incubated in a bad/good solvent mixture for polystyrene, e.g., ethanol/tetrahydrofuran mixtures. After self-assembly, mixtures of particles with two, three, four silica or magnetic silica patches are mainly obtained. The influence of experimental parameters such as the ethanol/tetrahydrofuran volume ratio, monopod concentration and incubation time is studied. Further developments would consist of obtaining pure batches by centrifugal sorting and optimizing the relative position of the patches in conventional repulsion figures.

This study compared the effects of a conventional endodontic needle with an agitation system on a novel tricalcium silicate-based sealer (NTS) in terms of dentinal tubule penetration and interfacial adaptation to a root canal. Fifty single-rooted, recently-extracted human maxillary central incisors were randomly distributed into two homogeneous groups characterized by two different final cleansing systems: Conventional endodontic needle, or EndoActivator ® . After instrumentation, all the teeth were filled with the gutta-percha single cone technique in conjunction with the novel tricalcium silicate-based sealer. Teeth were horizontally sectioned at 1 and 5 mm from the apex and were observed under a confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) at five magnifications. The maximum, mean, and the circumferential percentage of the sealer penetration inside the tubules were measured. Moreover, the gap width was evaluated using Image J software (National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD). EndoActivator ® did not result in a significantly higher circumferential percentage of sealer penetration than conventional irrigation ( p > 0.05). However, the gap width was significantly lower with EndoActivator ® , compared to conventional needles at both 1 mm ( p = 0.035) and 5 mm ( p = 0.038). The EndoActivator ® irrigation system did not significantly improve the NTS penetration, as compared to the conventional endodontic needle irrigation. Activation of the irrigation reduced the gap width significantly.
