Inhibition of soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) is a promising therapeutic strategy for treating neuropathic pain. These inhibitors effectively reduce diabetic neuropathic pain and inflammation induced by Freund’s adjuvant which makes them a suitable alternative to traditional opioids. This study showcased the notable analgesic effects of compound AMHDU (1,1′-(hexane-1,6-diyl)bis(3-((adamantan-1-yl)methyl)urea)) in both inflammatory and diabetic neuropathy models. While lacking anti-inflammatory properties in a paw edema model, AMHDU is comparable to celecoxib as an analgesic in 30 mg/kg dose administrated by intraperitoneal injection. In a diabetic tactile allodynia model, AMHDU showed a prominent analgesic activity in 10 mg/kg intraperitoneal dose (p < 0.05). The effect is comparable to that of gabapentin, but without the risk of dependence due to a different mechanism of action. Low acute oral toxicity (>2000 mg/kg) and a high therapeutic index makes AMHDU a promising candidate for further structure optimization and preclinical evaluation.

The compound 1-(3-chlorophenyl)-3-(6-((1,7,7-trimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-ylidene)amino)hexyl)thiourea was synthesized for the first time from 6-((1,7,7-trimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-ylidene)amino)hexan-1-amine and 3-chlorophenylisothiocyanate in DMF with a 60% yield. It was characterized by 1H, 13C{1H} NMR, FT-IR, MS, and elemental analysis.

The necessity for efficacious, sophisticated methodologies to facilitate agricultural intensification in the context of global population growth is widely accepted. One of the principal methods for enhancing the yield of plant agricultural products is the application of fertilizers. In light of the rapid advancement of nanotechnology over recent decades, the potential of utilizing fertilizing systems based on nanoparticles and nanomaterials—termed “nanofertilizers”—as an alternative to classical mineral fertilizers is increasingly being explored. Due to their unique properties, nanofertilizers demonstrate a number of qualities useful for agriculture. These include high activity, more accurate dosing, targeted delivery of fertilizers to plants, reduced accumulation in soils and groundwater, high durability, and so forth. This review presents a synthesis of data on the efficacy of nanofertilizers over the last decade, focusing on macro-based (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S) and micro-based (Fe, Zn, Mn, B, Cu, Mo) nanoformulations for agricultural crops. We analyzed over 200 publications, published mainly over the last decade, on the topic of “nanofertilizers”. An analysis of published data on the effectiveness of using nanoparticles as applied fertilizers was carried out, and the effectiveness of using nanofertilizers was compared with traditional chemical fertilizers for a number of elements.

This research aims to explore how functionally active structures affect the physical, mechanical, thermal, and fire-resistant properties of elastomeric compositions using ethylene–propylene–diene rubber as a base. The inclusion of aluminosilicate microspheres, microfibers, and a phosphorus–boron–nitrogen–organic modifier in these structures creates a synergistic effect, enhancing the material’s heat-insulating properties by strengthening coke and carbonization processes. This results in a 12–19% increase in heating time for unheated sample surfaces and a 6–17% increase in residual coke compared to existing analogs. Microspheres help counteract the negative impact of microfibers on composition density and thermal conductivity, while the phosphorus–boron–containing modifier allows for controlling the formation of the coke layer.

The notion of notable anatomical, biochemical, and behavioral distinctions within male and female brains has been a contentious topic of interest within the scientific community over several decades. Advancements in neuroimaging and molecular biological techniques have increasingly elucidated common mechanisms characterizing brain aging while also revealing disparities between sexes in these processes. Variations in cognitive functions; susceptibility to and progression of neurodegenerative conditions, notably Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases; and notable disparities in life expectancy between sexes, underscore the significance of evaluating aging within the framework of gender differences. This comprehensive review surveys contemporary literature on the restructuring of brain structures and fundamental processes unfolding in the aging brain at cellular and molecular levels, with a focus on gender distinctions. Additionally, the review delves into age-related cognitive alterations, exploring factors influencing the acceleration or deceleration of aging, with particular attention to estrogen’s hormonal support of the central nervous system.

This article will focus on the issue of protection against the pathogenic biofilm development on steel surfaces within the food sectors, highlighting steel’s prominence as a material choice in these areas. Pathogenic microorganism-based biofilms present significant health hazards in the food industry. Current scientific research offers a variety of solutions to the problem of protecting metal surfaces in contact with food from the growth of pathogenic microorganisms. One promising strategy to prevent bacterial growth involves applying a polymeric layer to metal surfaces, which can function as either an antiadhesive barrier or a bactericidal agent. Thus, the review aims to thoroughly examine the application of antibacterial polymer coatings on steel, a key material in contact with food, summarizing research advancements in this field. The investigation into polymer antibacterial coatings is organized into three primary categories: antimicrobial agent-releasing coatings, contact-based antimicrobial coatings, and antifouling coatings. Antibacterial properties of the studied types of coatings are determined not only by their composition, but also by the methods for applying them to metal and coating surfaces. A review of the current literature indicates that coatings based on polymers substantially enhance the antibacterial properties of metallic surfaces. Furthermore, these coatings contribute additional benefits including improved corrosion resistance, enhanced aesthetic appeal, and the provision of unique design elements.

NUSES is a pathfinder satellite project hosting two detectors: Ziré and Terzina. Ziré focuses on the study of protons and electrons below 250 MeV and MeV gamma rays. Terzina is dedicated to the detection of Cherenkov light produced by ultra-high-energy cosmic rays above 100 PeV and ultra-high-energy Earth-skimming neutrinos in the atmosphere, ensuring a large exposure. This work mainly concerns the description of the Cherenkov camera, composed of SiPMs, for the Terzina telescope. To increase the data-taking period, the NUSES orbit will be Sun-synchronous (with a height of about 550 km), thus allowing Terzina to always point toward the dark side of the Earth’s limb. The Sun-synchronous orbit requires small distances to the poles, and as a consequence, we expect an elevated dose to be received by the SiPMs. Background rates due to the dose accumulated by the SiPM would become a dominant contribution during the last two years of the NUSES mission. In this paper, we illustrate the measured effect of irradiance on SiPM photosensors with a variable-intensity beam of 50 MeV protons up to a 30 Gy total integrated dose. We also show the results of an initial study conducted without considering the contribution of solar wind protons and with an initial geometry with Geant4. The considered geometry included an entrance lens as one of the options in the initial design of the telescope. We characterize the SiPM output signal shape with different μ-cell sizes. We describe the developed parametric SiPM simulation, which is a part of the full Terzina simulation chain.

Cold atmospheric plasma has become a widespread tool in bacterial decontamination, harnessing reactive oxygen and nitrogen species to neutralize bacteria on surfaces and in the air. This technology is often employed in healthcare, food processing, water treatment, etc. One of the most energy-efficient and universal methods for creating cold atmospheric plasma is the initiation of a piezoelectric direct discharge. The article presents a study of the bactericidal effect of piezoelectric direct discharge plasma generated using the multifunctional source “CAPKO”. This device allows for the modification of the method of plasma generation “on the fly” by replacing a unit (cap) on the working device. The results of the generation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species in a buffer solution in the modes of direct discharge in air and a plasma jet with an argon flow are presented. The bactericidal effect of these types of plasma against the bacteria E. coli BL21 (DE3) was studied. The issues of scaling the treatment technique are considered.

Three-phase polymer composites are promising materials for creating electronic device components. The qualitative and quantitative composition of such composites has a significant effect on their functional, in particular dielectric properties. In this study, ceramic filler K2Ni0.93Ti7.07O16 (KNTO) with Ag coating as conductive additive (0.5, 1.0, 2.5 wt.%) was introduced into the polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) polymer matrix in amounts of 7.5, 15, 22.5, and 30 vol.%. to optimize the dielectric constant and dielectric loss tangent. The filler was characterized by X-ray phase analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and Scanning electron microscopy methods. The dielectric constant, dielectric loss tangent, and conductivity of three-phase composites KNTO@Ag-PVDF were studied in comparison with two-phase composites KNTO-PVDF in the frequency range from 102 Hz to 106 Hz. The dielectric constant values of composites containing 7.5, 15, 22.5, and 30 vol.% filler were 12, 13, 17.4, 19.2 for pure KNTO and 13, 19, 25, 31 for KNTO@Ag filler (2.5 wt.%) at frequency 10 kHz. The dielectric loss tangent ranged from 0.111 to 0.340 at a filler content of 7.5 to 30 vol.%. A significantly enhanced balance of dielectric properties of PVDF-based composites was found with K2Ni0.93Ti7.07O16 as ceramic filler for 1 wt.% of silver. Composites KNTO@Ag(1 wt.%)-PVDF can be applied as dielectrics for passive elements of flexible electronics.

It has been shown that the cultivation of plants under glass coated with nano-sized upconversion luminophores led to an increase in plant productivity and the acceleration of plant adaptation to ultraviolet radiation. In the present work, we examined the effect of upconversion nanopowders with the nominal composition Sr0.955Yb0.020Er0.025F2.045 on plant (Solanum lycopersicum) photochemistry. The composition, structure and size of nanoparticles were tested using X-ray pattern diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and dynamic light scattering. Nanoparticles are capable of converting infrared radiation into red and green photons. Glasses coated with upconversion luminophores increase the intensity of photosynthetically active radiation and absorb the ultraviolet and far-red radiation. The chlorophyll a fluorescence method showed that plants growing under photoconversion and those growing under common film demonstrate different ability to utilize excitation energy via photosynthesis. It was shown that under ultraviolet and high light conditions, the efficiency of the photochemical reactions, the non-photochemical fluorescence quenching, and the electron transport remained relatively stable in plants growing under photoconversion film in contrast to plants growing under common film. Thus, cultivation of Solanum lycopersicum under photoconversion glasses led to the acceleration in plant growth due to greater efficiency of plant photochemistry under stress conditions.

Bacterial antibiotic resistance is one of the most serious modern biomedical problems that prioritizes the search for new agents to combat bacterial pathogens. It is known that nanoparticles of many metals and metal oxides can have an antibacterial effect. However, the antibacterial efficacy of aluminum oxide nanoparticles has been studied little compared to the well-known antimicrobial properties of nanoparticles of oxides of metals such as zinc, silver, iron, and copper. In this review, we have focused on the experimental studies accumulated to date demonstrating the antibacterial effect of aluminum oxide nanoparticles. The review discusses the main ways of synthesis and modification of these nanoparticles, provides the proposed mechanisms of their antibacterial action against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, and also compares the antibacterial efficacy depending on morphological characteristics. We have also partially considered the activity of aluminum oxide nanoparticles against water microalgae and fungi. In general, a more detailed study of the antibacterial properties of aluminum oxide nanoparticles is of great interest due to their low toxicity to eukaryotic cells.

Thin-film electrolyte made of 8-mol% yttria stabilized zirconia (8YSZ) for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) was fabricated on anode substrates using reactive magnetron sputtering of Zr-Y targets in a mixture of Ar and O2 gases. The deposition of 4–6 µm thin-film electrolyte was in the transition or oxide modes differing by the oxygen concentration in the sputtering atmosphere. The half-cell bending of the anode-supported SOFCs was measured to determine the residual stresses in the electrolyte films after the deposition and thermal annealing in air. The dependences were studied between the deposition modes, residual stresses in the films, and the SOFC performance. At 800 °C, the maximum power density of SOFCs ranged between 0.58 and 1.2 W/cm2 depending on the electrolyte deposition mode. Scanning electron microscopy was carried out to investigate the surface morphology and structure of the YSZ electrolyte films after thermal annealing. Additionally, an X-ray diffraction analysis of the YSZ electrolyte films was conducted for the synchrotron radiation beam during thermal annealing at different temperatures up to 1300 °C. It was found that certain deposition modes provide the formation of the YSZ electrolyte films with acceptable residual stresses (2).

The potential of the method of fluorescence spectroscopy for the detection of damage and diseases of fruits and vegetables was studied. For this purpose, the spectra of fluorescence of healthy and rotten apples and potatoes have been investigated. Excitation of samples was carried out using a continuous semiconductor laser with a wavelength of 405 nm and a pulsed solid-state laser with a wavelength of 527 nm. Peaks in the region of 600–700 nm in rotten samples were shifted towards shorter wavelengths for most samples in both modes of spectroscopy. The differences in the fluorescence spectra of a healthy and rotten apple surface have been revealed to be in the spectral range of 550–650 nm for 405 nm continuous excitation. When exposed to a laser in a pulsed mode (527 nm), the contribution of the 630 nm peak in the spectrum increases in rotten samples. The observed differences make it possible to use this method for separating samples of healthy and rotten fruits and vegetables. The article paid attention to the influence of many factors such as sample thickness, time after excitation, contamination by soil and dust, cultivar, and location of the probing on fluorescence spectra.

The influence of light conversion induced by glasses coated with up-converting luminescent nanoparticles on Solanum lycopersicum cultivation was studied. Nanoparticles of Sr0.46Ba0.50Yb0.02Er0.02F2.04 solid solution were used as the up-converting luminophore. These nanoparticles were able to transform IR radiation into visible light (λem = 660 nm with minor peaks at 545 nm and 525 nm). By applying the “variable” chlorophyll fluorescence (ΔF), it was shown that the cultivation of tomatoes under the photoconversion glasses stimulated changes in the rate of plant adaptation to ultraviolet radiation. The restoration time of values of effective quantum yield of photosystem II photochemical reactions and photochemical quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence (reflecting disappearance of imbalance between photosynthetic electron transport and the utilization of NADPH) was reduced from three weeks to three days in the case of control and photoconversion films, respectively. As a result, plants grown under photoconversion glass had an increased leaf number (12.5%), total leaf area (33%), stem length (35%) and chlorophyll content in the leaves (two-fold). It is assumed that an increase in the proportion of red light in the growing spectrum has a positive effect on photosynthetic activity and plant growth.

Microbial antibiotic resistance is an important global world health problem. Recently, an interest in nanoparticles (NPs) of silver oxides as compounds with antibacterial potential has significantly increased. From a practical point of view, composites of silver oxide NPs and biocompatible material are of interest. A borosiloxane (BS) can be used as one such material. A composite material combining BS and silver oxide NPs has been synthesized. Composites containing BS have adjustable viscoelastic properties. The silver oxide NPs synthesized by laser ablation have a size of ~65 nm (half-width 60 nm) and an elemental composition of Ag2O. The synthesized material exhibits strong bacteriostatic properties against E. coli at a concentration of nanoparticles of silver oxide more than 0.01%. The bacteriostatic effect depends on the silver oxide NPs concentration in the matrix. The BS/silver oxide NPs have no cytotoxic effect on a eukaryotic cell culture when the concentration of nanoparticles of silver oxide is less than 0.1%. The use of the resulting composite based on BS and silver oxide NPs as a reusable dry disinfectant is due to its low toxicity and bacteriostatic activity and its characteristics are not inferior to the medical alloy nitinol.

Polymer matrix composites based on ED-20 epoxy resin, hollandite K1.6(Ni0.8Ti7.2)O16 and carbon nanotubes with a variable content of 0.107; 0.213 and 0.425 vol.% were obtained for the first time. Initial components and composites produced were characterized by XRD, XRA, FTIR, SEM and Raman spectroscopy. The dielectric properties of composite materials were measured by impedance spectroscopy and determined by the volume ratio of the composite components, primarily by the concentration of CNTs. At a CNT content of 0.213 vol.% (before percolation threshold), the maximum synergistic effect of carbon and ceramic fillers on the dielectric properties of a composite based on the epoxy resin was found. Three-phase composites based on epoxy resin, with a maximum permittivity at a minimum dielectric loss tangent, are promising materials for elements of an electronic component base.

Sustainable development of the agricultural industry, in particular, the production of milk and feed for farm animals, requires accurate, fast, and non-invasive diagnostic tools. Currently, there is a rapid development of a number of analytical methods and approaches that meet these requirements. Infrared spectrometry in the near and mid-IR range is especially widespread. Progress has been made not only in the physical methods of carrying out measurements, but significant advances have also been achieved in the development of mathematical processing of the received signals. This review is devoted to the comparison of modern methods and devices used to control the quality of milk and feed for farm animals.

A low-temperature technology was developed for producing a nanocomposite based on poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs), synthesized by laser ablation. Nanocomposites were created containing 0.001, 0.01, and 0.1% of zinc oxide nanoparticles with rod-like morphology and a size of 40–70 nm. The surface of the films from the obtained nanomaterial was uniform, without significant defects. Clustering of ZnO-NPs in the PLGA matrix was noted, which increased with an increase in the concentration of the dopant in the polymer. The resulting nanomaterial was capable of generating reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radicals. The rate of ROS generation increased with an increase in the concentration of the dopant. It was shown that the synthesized nanocomposite promotes the formation of long-lived reactive protein species, and is also the reason for the appearance of a key biomarker of oxidative stress, 8-oxoguanine, in DNA. The intensity of the process increased with an increase in the concentration of nanoparticles in the matrix. It was found that the nanocomposite exhibits significant bacteriostatic properties, the severity of which depends on the concentration of nanoparticles. In particular, on the surface of the PLGA–ZnO-NPs composite film containing 0.001% nanoparticles, the number of bacterial cells was 50% lower than that of pure PLGA. The surface of the composite is non-toxic to eukaryotic cells and does not interfere with their adhesion, growth, and division. Due to its low cytotoxicity and bacteriostatic properties, this nanocomposite can be used as coatings for packaging in the food industry, additives for textiles, and also as a material for biomedicine.

Nanosystems for targeted delivery and remote-controlled release of therapeutic agents has become a top priority in pharmaceutical science and drug development in recent decades. Application of a low frequency magnetic field (LFMF) as an external stimulus opens up opportunities to trigger release of the encapsulated bioactive substances with high locality and penetration ability without heating of biological tissue in vivo. Therefore, the development of novel microencapsulated drug formulations sensitive to LFMF is of paramount importance. Here, we report the result of LFMF-triggered release of the fluorescently labeled dextran from polyelectrolyte microcapsules modified with magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles. Polyelectrolyte microcapsules were obtained by a method of sequential deposition of oppositely charged poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) on the surface of colloidal vaterite particles. The synthesized single domain maghemite nanoparticles integrated into the polymer multilayers serve as magneto-mechanical actuators. We report the first systematic study of the effect of magnetic field with different frequencies on the permeability of the microcapsules. The in situ measurements of the optical density curves upon the 100 mT LFMF treatment were carried out for a range of frequencies from 30 to 150 Hz. Such fields do not cause any considerable heating of the magnetic nanoparticles but promote their rotating-oscillating mechanical motion that produces mechanical forces and deformations of the adjacent materials. We observed the changes in release of the encapsulated TRITC-dextran molecules from the PAH/PSS microcapsules upon application of the 50 Hz alternating magnetic field. The obtained results open new horizons for the design of polymer systems for triggered drug release without dangerous heating and overheating of tissues.

On the basis of a direct current magnetron, a technology has been developed for producing nanoscale-oriented nanorods from zinc oxide on an acrylic polymer. The technology makes it possible to achieve different filling of the surface with zinc oxide nanorods. The nanorods is partially fused into the polymer; the cross section of the nanorods is rather close to an elongated ellipse. It is shown that, with intense abrasion, no delamination of the nanorods from the acrylic polymer is observed. The zinc oxide nanorods abrades together with the acrylic polymer. Zinc oxide nanorods luminesces with the wavelength most preferable for the process of photosynthesis in higher plants. It was shown that plants grown under the obtained material grow faster and gain biomass faster than the control group. In addition, it was found that on surfaces containing zinc oxide nanorods, a more intense formation of such reactive oxygen species as hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radical is observed. Intensive formation of long-lived, active forms of the protein is observed on the zinc oxide coating. The formation of 8-oxoguanine in DNA in vitro on a zinc oxide coating was shown using ELISA method. It was found that the multiplication of microorganisms on the developed material is significantly hampered. At the same time, eukaryotic cells of animals grow and develop without hindrance. Thus, the material we have obtained can be used in photonics (photoconversion material for greenhouses, housings for LEDs), and it is also an affordable and non-toxic nanomaterial for creating antibacterial coatings.

The effect of upconverting luminescent nanoparticles coated on glass on the productivity of Solanum lycopersicum was studied. The cultivation of tomatoes under photoconversion glass led to an increase in plant productivity and an acceleration of plant adaptation to ultraviolet radiation. An increase in the total leaf area and chlorophyll content in the leaves was revealed in plants growing under the photoconversion glass. Plants growing under the photoconversion glass were able to more effectively utilize the absorbed light energy. The results of this study suggest that the spectral changes induced by photoconversion glass can accelerate the adaptation of plants to the appearance of ultraviolet radiation.

The present study a comprehensive analysis of the antibacterial properties of a composite material based on borosiloxane and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs). The effect of the polymer matrix and ZnO NPs on the generation of reactive oxygen species, hydroxyl radicals, and long-lived oxidized forms of biomolecules has been studied. All variants of the composites significantly inhibited the division of E. coli bacteria and caused them to detach from the substrate. It was revealed that the surfaces of a composite material based on borosiloxane and ZnO NPs do not inhibit the growth and division of mammalians cells. It is shown in the work that the positive effect of the incorporation of ZnO NPs into borosiloxane can reach 100% or more, provided that the viscoelastic properties of borosiloxane with nanoparticles are retained.

Whether and under what conditions astrocytes can mount a collective network response has recently become one of the central questions in neurobiology. Here, we address this problem, investigating astrocytic reactions to different biochemical stimuli and ischemic-like conditions in vitro. Identifying an emergent astrocytic network is based on a novel mathematical approach that extracts calcium activity from time-lapse fluorescence imaging and estimates the connectivity of astrocytes. The developed algorithm represents the astrocytic network as an oriented graph in which the nodes correspond to separate astrocytes, and the edges indicate high dynamical correlations between astrocytic events. We demonstrate that ischemic-like conditions decrease network connectivity in primary cultures in vitro, although calcium events persist. Importantly, we found that stimulation under normal conditions with 10 µM ATP increases the number of long-range connections and the degree of corresponding correlations in calcium activity, apart from the frequency of calcium events. This result indicates that astrocytes can form a large functional network in response to certain stimuli. In the post-ischemic interval, the response to ATP stimulation is not manifested, which suggests a deep lesion in functional astrocytic networks. The blockade of Connexin 43 during ischemic modeling preserves the connectivity of astrocytes in the post-hypoxic period.
