Background/Objectives: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory condition mediated by the immune system with various manifestations. The increased prevalence of subclinical joint involvement has led to the development of early diagnostic methods for psoriatic arthritis, including several instruments that have been validated and used in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to perform the Romanian translation, cultural adaptation, and validation of three assessment tools: the Early Arthritis for Psoriatic Patients (EARP) Questionnaire, Psoriasis Epidemiology Screening Tool (PEST), and Toronto Psoriatic Arthritis Screen 2 (TOPAS 2), which are designed to evaluate early-stage arthritis in patients with psoriasis. Methods: All the activities were carried out in accordance with the internationally recognized methodology recommended by the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcome Research (ISPOR), the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) regarding the translation process and the validation of instruments, and data from the international literature. These three questionnaires were administered to 29 patients with psoriasis diagnosed by biopsy. A descriptive study was conducted and the data were analyzed with appropriate statistical tests using the PSPP program. A reliability test was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. Results: The obtained values were significant for the first two questionnaires, with a value of 0.89 for the EARP and 0.63 for the PEST, but the value was not as significant for ToPAS2, at 0.40. Conclusions: This pilot study revealed that the Romanian and original versions of the three questionnaires are similar.

(1) Background: Neural tube defects are a prevalent cause of congenital malformations, myelomeningocele (MMC) being the most severe form. This study evaluates the clinical outcome and postoperative-associated complications following MMC surgical closures, focusing on the following three techniques: direct suture (DS); VY advancement flap (VYF); and Limberg flap (LF). (2) Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted from March 2015 to February 2023, and the inclusion criteria were newborns who underwent lumbosacral MMC within 24 h of birth. (3) Results: Out of 20 cases, 45% underwent DS closure; 25% underwent VY-F closure; 15% underwent LF closure, and 15% (n = 3) underwent combined flap closure. A significant statistical correlation was observed between intracranial hypertension (IH), the need for external ventricular drainage (EVD), and DS closure type. In the DS group, 60% of patients required EVD (p = 0.041), and 90% had IH (p = 0.027). CSF fistula was present in 40% of LF cases and 30% of DS cases, while wound dehiscence was observed in 60% of LF cases and 30% of DS cases. (4) Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that DS was linked to higher rates of complications. The VY-F is the safest method for closing MMC defects.

Background: Midwives are strong advocates for vaginal births. However, their visibility and accessibility are poorly perceived by women in Romania. Consequently, the women’s options are limited to a single direction when pregnancy occurs, involving the family doctor, the obstetrician, and often an interventional technical approach at the time of birth. The aim of this research is to identify specific variables that affect the perceptions and attitudes of pregnant women towards the care provided by midwives. This knowledge could contribute to the development of more effective education and information strategies within maternal health services. Methods: A cross-sectional observational analytical survey was conducted in Romania among pregnant women from the general population. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire, with informed consent obtained from each participating pregnant woman. The questionnaire was administered online using the cloud-based Google Forms platform and was available on the internet for seven months, from January to July 2023. The questionnaire was distributed through various media channels, both individually and in communication groups, in the form of a link. All questions were mandatory, and the questionnaire could only be submitted after answering all questions. Results: A total of 1301 individual responses were collected. The analysis of the socio-demographic and obstetrical profile of the pregnant women revealed that approximately half, 689 (52.95%), of the participants were aged between 18–29 years, and 1060 (81.47%) of the participants were married. Among our group of 1301 pregnant women, 973 (74.78%) had higher education, and 987 (75.86%) had a regular job. A majority of the survey participants, 936 (71.94%), lived in an urban geographic area, while 476 (36.58%) had attended childbirth education courses, and 791 (60.79%) were in the third trimester of pregnancy. A total of 298 (22.9%) respondents did not want to give birth in a hospital, and one-third, 347 (26.67%), did not place significant importance on control over the childbirth process. Conclusions: The main factors influencing women’s decisions regarding perinatal care and the importance of midwives as a component of the maternal-infant care team are modifiable, and thorough educational and psychological preparation would reduce the increasing predominance of preference for cesarean section, thereby promoting healthier and more woman- and child-centered perinatal care.

Because of the large number of parameters that interact in amplifier functions, determining dynamic regime parameters as well as the mode of function of amplifier stages is an extremely complex problem. This paper describes a LabVIEW application for studying the functioning of an amplifier in various connections. The user selects the generator’s parameters, the type of connection and its parameters, as well as the load circuit characteristics. The application can determine both the stage characteristics and the Bode characteristics. The amplifier’s stability zone, as well as its gain and phase, are determined based on these characteristics. An important advantage of this application is that the design of the amplifier stage can be created starting from some parameters that the amplifier can establish, from which the values of components can be determined. In order to validate the simulation results from the LabVIEW application, the specialized program Multisim was used, as well as experimental measurements using the Electronics Explorer Board. Both Multisim and Electronics Explorer Board can determine Bode characteristics. In both simulations and experimental amplifiers, the same schemes with the same transistor were used. The application can be used for educational purposes as well as to design an amplifier’s stage to achieve specific parameters.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a metabolic disorder that has alarmingly increased in incidence in recent decades. One of the most serious complications of T2DM is diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM), an often underrecognized yet severe condition that is a leading cause of mortality among diabetic patients. In the early stages of DCM, patients typically show no symptoms and maintain normal systolic and diastolic left ventricle function, making early detection challenging. Currently available clinical markers are often not specific enough to detect the early stage of DCM. Conventional biomarkers of cardiac mechanical stress and injury, such as natriuretic peptides (NPs) and cardiac troponin I (cTnI), have shown limited predictive value for patients with T2DM. NPs have proven efficacy in detecting diastolic dysfunction in diabetic patients when used alongside 2D echocardiography, but their utility as biomarkers is limited to symptomatic individuals. While cTnI is a reliable indicator of general cardiac damage, it is not specific to cardiac injury caused by high glucose levels or T2DM. This underscores the need for research into biomarkers that can enable early diagnosis and management of DCM to reduce mortality rates. Promising novel biomarkers that showed good performance in detecting diastolic dysfunction or heart failure in diabetic patients include galectin-3, ST2, FGF-21, IGFBP-7, GDF-15, and TGF-β. This review summarizes the current understanding of DCM biomarkers, aiming to generate new ideas for the early recognition and treatment of DCM by exploring related pathophysiological mechanisms.

In recent years, agricultural by-product fillers have been investigated in composites to influence the physical properties of the packaging material, increase biodegradability, and reduce costs. In general, the properties of composites are mainly influenced by the type, amount, and size of fillers. The aim of this study was to characterize potato peel particles as a filler in a poly(lactic acid) (PLA) matrix and to determine the effect of particle size on the physical properties of the composite. Therefore, different fractions of potato peel powder (0–53 μm, 125–250 μm, and 315–500 μm) were incorporated into PLA matrix via compounding and injection-molding. Microscopic analysis of the injection-molded samples revealed that the average particle shape did not differ between the different fractions. Overall, increasing the particle size of potato peel particles resulted in increased stiffness and decreased ductility. The cold crystallization temperature and water vapor transmission rate of the composites were independent of particle size but increased upon the incorporation of potato peel particles. In conclusion, the effect of particle incorporation on packaging-related properties was higher than the effect of using different particle size fractions. This means that potato peel particles, regardless of their particle size distribution, are promising fillers for composites, with the potential to improve biodegradability, maintain some level of protection for the packaged product, and reduce the cost of the composites.

Numerous plastic products are used in agriculture, including containers, packaging, tunnels, drip irrigation tubing, and mulches. Large amounts of plastics are used as mulches on the soil surface for vegetable and fruit production (tomato, cucumber, watermelon, strawberry, and vine) to reduce weed competition, increase water and fertilizer use efficiency, and enhance crop yield. Portugal uses around 4500 t/year of polyethylene to cover approximately 23,000 ha of agricultural land, and only a small amount is recovered for recycling or secondary uses because of issues of contamination with the soil, vegetation, pesticides, and fertilizers. Cleaning and decontaminating polyethylene mulch are costly, and commercial technology is often not accessible or economical. Most plastic mulch is composed of polyethylene that degrades slowly and produces a large quantity of residues in the soil, with a negative impact on the environment. In the present study, the effects of long-term cultivation of blueberry using green 100% high-density polyethylene mulch in the south Portugal were evaluated for soil chemical and biological changes. High-density green plastic mulch did not contaminate the topsoil with di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, and heavy metals, buttotal nitrogen, organic carbon concentrations, electric conductivity, and microbial activity were significantly reduced in the planting row compared with the bare soil without mulching. Furthermore, the presence of plastic mulch did not negatively affect the presence of nematodes, and the number of Rhabditida (bacterial feeders) increased in the planting and covered row.

In this study, we investigated the use of functionalized deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as a medium for CO2 capture integrated with CO2 desorption and biofixation in microalgal culture, as an approach for carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). The newly devised DES formulation—comprising choline chloride, ethylene glycol, and monoethanolamine—demonstrated a significant advancement in CO2 absorption capacity compared with conventional solvents. Effective CO2 desorption from the solvent was also achieved, recovering nearly 90% of the captured CO2. We then examined the application of the functionalized DESs to promote microalgal cultivation using a Chlorella sp. strain. The experimental results indicated that microalgae exposed to DES-desorbed CO2 exhibited heightened growth rates and enhanced biomass production, signifying the potential of DES-driven CO2 capture for sustainable microalgal biomass cultivation. This research contributes to the growing field of CCUS strategies, offering an avenue for efficient CO2 capture and conversion into valuable biomasses, thereby contributing to both environmental sustainability and bioresource use.

Tumor initiation, progression, and invasion are closely related to the tumor microenvironment. Inflammation can modulate the activity of the cells in the TME and contribute to all stages of tumor development. The etiopathogenesis of cutaneous manifestations associated with prostate cancer is unclear. The cutaneous phenotype associated with prostate cancer could be supported by intratumoral heterogeneity, the remodeling of interactions in the tumor microenvironment, and the dynamics of the epithelial–mesenchymal transition. Among the urinary system cancers, prostate cancer presents few cutaneous signs and symptoms, most being diagnosed in the advanced stages of the disease. In this review, we analyze the cutaneous events associated with prostate cancer, represented by direct or indirect manifestations of the primary malignancy and the skin toxicities caused by oncological medications.

Open-pit mining generates significant amounts of waste material, leading to the formation of large waste dumps that pose environmental risks such as land degradation and potential slope failures. The paper presents a stability analysis of waste dump slopes in open-pit mining, focusing on the Motru coalfield in Romania. To assess the stability of these dumps, the study employs the Shear Strength Reduction Method (SSRM) implemented in the COMSOL Multiphysics version 6 software, considering both associative and non-associative plasticity models. (1) Various slope angles were analyzed, and the Factor of Safety (FoS) was calculated, showing that the FoS decreases as the slope angle increases. (2) The study also demonstrates that the use of non-associative plasticity leads to lower FoS values compared to associative plasticity. (3) The results are visualized through 2D and 3D models, highlighting failure surfaces and displacement patterns, which offer insight into the rock mass behavior prior to failure. (4) The research also emphasizes the effectiveness of numerical modeling in geotechnical assessments of stability. (5) The results suggest that a non-associative flow rule should be adopted for slope stability analysis. (7) Quantitative results are obtained, with small variations compared to those obtained by LEM. (6) Dilatation angle, soil moduli, or domain changes cause differences of just a few percent and are not critical for the use of the SSRM in engineering.

Background/Objectives: Neuroretinitis (NR) is a rare inflammatory condition characterized by sudden vision loss, optic disc edema and macular star appearance predominantly affecting individuals in their third and fourth decades of life. Methods: This paper describes the case of 33-year-old Caucasian man with no significant medical history complaining of decreased vision for about a week. Results: The ophthalmological exam revealed best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) for the right eye (RE) of 0.8 (decimal notation) and of 0.9 for the left eye (LE). Intraocular pressure (IOP) was 20 mmHg in RE and 18 mmHg in LE. Slit-lamp examination of both eyes (OU) showed no evidence of intraocular inflammation in the anterior chamber or vitreous cavity. Examination of the posterior pole of the right eye showed bilateral papilledema with an incomplete macular fan pattern. Conclusions: Despite extensive laboratory tests, including serologic and imaging investigations, a definitive etiology remained unclear. It is very important to differentiate NR from other optic nerve disorders, requiring careful clinical evaluation and observation of the evolution of symptoms.

Background/Objectives: The association between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a common one, with long-term therapeutic and prognostic impact. In view of the high pulmonary and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, self-management contributes to decreasing the risk of an acute cardiac event or pulmonary decompensation. Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study on 100 patients admitted to Iasi Clinical Rehabilitation Hospital who were divided into two groups according to the presence (67 patients) or absence (33 patients) of MetS. All patients benefited from multidisciplinary counseling sessions on their active role in improving modifiable cardiovascular risk factors and thus increasing quality of life. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of metabolic syndrome on lung function and the role of self-management in a 6-month follow-up period. The demographic, anthropometric, cardiovascular risk factors, and respiratory function were analyzed at baseline and at 6 months. Results: The presence of MetS was associated with higher fasting blood glucose (p = 0.004) and triglycerides (p = 0.003) but not with higher levels of interleukins or TNF-alpha. At the 6-month follow-up, abdominal circumference, forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), dyspnea severity, and blood pressure values improved in male patients with COPD. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure decreased in the COPD group as a whole, but especially in male patients with and without associated MetS. BMI was positively correlated with FEV1 (r = 0.389, p = 0.001) and the FEV1/forced vital capacity (FVC) ratio (r = 0.508, p < 0.001) in all COPD patients and in the MetS subgroup. In the COPD group as a whole. the six-minute walk test (6MWT) results (m) were positively correlated with FEV1 and FVC. The correlation remained significant for FVC in COPD patients with and without MetS. An increase in BMI by one unit led to an increase in TG values by 3.358 mg/dL, and the presence of metabolic syndrome led to an increase in TG values by 17.433 mg/dL. Conclusions: In our study, MetS is a common comorbidity in patients with COPD and is associated with higher BMI, fasting glucose, and triglycerides but not with the inflammatory parameters. A mixed pulmonary–cardiovascular rehabilitation intervention leads to improvement in various parameters in both female and male COPD patients.

(1) Background: Interleukin 17 (IL17) and toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) elevate the risk of metabolic and liver diseases. (2) Methods: This study’s objective was to explore the association of IL17 and TLR4 gene polymorphisms with MASLD susceptibility and test their effect on serum IL17 and TLR4 levels. A total of 43 patients with MASLD (MASH/MAFL) and 38 healthy individuals were genotyped for IL17F-A7488G, IL17A-G197A, TLR4-Asp299Gly, and TLR4-Thr399Ile polymorphisms using PCR-RFLP. ELISA methods determined IL17F, IL17A, and TLR4 serum levels. (3) Conclusions: Patients carrying the variant genotypes (A/G + G/G) of IL17-A7448G (OR = 5.25), (G/A + A/A) of IL17-G197A (OR = 10.57), (Asp/Gly + Gly/Gly) of TLR4-Asp299Gly (OR = 3.52), or (Thr/Ile + Ile/Ile) of TLR4-Thr399Ile (OR = 9.87) had significantly increased odds of MASH. Genotype (G/A + A/A) of IL17-G197A was significantly associated with the odds of MAFL (p = 0.0166). Allele A of the IL17-G197A polymorphism was significantly related to increased odds of MAFL (OR = 4.13, p = 0.0133). In contrast, allele A of IL17-G197A (OR = 5.41, p = 0.008), allele Gly of TLR4-Asp299Gly (OR = 3.19, p = 0.046), and allele Ile of TLR4-Thr399Ile (OR = 6.94, p = 0.008) polymorphisms were significantly related to an increased risk of MASH. Allele A of IL17A-G197A, allele Gly of TLR4-Asp299Gly, and allele Ile of TLR4-Thr399Ile gene polymorphisms were significantly associated with the increased odds of MASLD. In patients with MASLD, we found significant influence from the IL17A-G197A gene polymorphism on IL17F levels (p = 0.0343).

Background/Objectives: Melanoma is an aggressive skin malignancy, and the majority of deaths associated with melanoma result from malignant skin lesions. Our study aims to evaluate the expression of the markers CD133 and NANOG, associated with tumor stem cells, and to analyze their link with epidemiological and histological parameters, thus contributing to early diagnosis and the development of targeted therapies. Methods: We performed a retrospective study in the Mureș Clinical County Hospital, Romania, which included 66 cases of melanoma: 50 primary cutaneous melanomas, 10 metastases, and 6 local recurrences. CD133 and NANOG marker expression was assessed by immunohistochemistry and quantified using the H score. Statistical analyses were applied to determine the correlations between marker expression and clinicopathological parameters. Results: CD133 expression was identified in six cases (12%) of primary melanoma, with a mean H-Score of 29, and was associated with an increased Breslow index and a higher number of mitoses. NANOG expression was positive in 30 cases (60%) of primary melanoma, with a median H-Score of 15 and with increased expression observed in cases with pagetoid migration and lesions in situ. In metastases, eight cases (80%) were positive for NANOG and four (40%) for CD133. Local recurrences showed positive expression for NANOG in four cases (66%). Conclusions: The expression of CD133 and NANOG markers highlights the role of tumor stem cells in melanoma progression. Early identification of these markers could improve diagnosis and treatment, including the application of targeted therapies.

The aim of this review is to highlight the most beneficial effects of dietary fermented feed in correlation with decreasing the antinutrient concentration in vegetal matrices usually used for broiler nutrition. Rational feed formulation is critical for animals because it improves animal performance, and provides the animal with the necessary nutrients to develop strong bones, muscles and tissues, and a properly functioning immune system. Fermentation of animal feed is useful as compounds with high molecular mass are converted into energy and compounds with lower molecular mass in the presence of enzymes produced mainly by bacteria and yeasts. Fermentation products contain probiotic compounds with beneficial effects on the health of the animal microbiome. Feed fermentation has other roles such as converting antinutrients into beneficial substances for animal organisms, and some studies have shown that fermentation of feed decreases the risk of antinutrient components presence. For the bibliographic research, different platforms were used (PubMed, Science Direct, MDPI resources), and numerous words or combinations of terms were used to find the latest information. Fermented feed utilization has been shown to enhance growth performance while promoting a healthier gut microbiome in animals.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a heterogenous malignant hemopathy, and although new drugs have emerged recently, current treatment options still show limited efficacy. Therapy resistance remains a major concern due to its contribution to treatment failure, disease relapse, and increased mortality among patients. The underlying mechanisms of resistance to therapy are not fully understood, and it is crucial to address this challenge to improve therapy. Macrophages are immune cells found within the bone marrow microenvironment (BMME), of critical importance for leukemia development and progression. One defining feature of macrophages is their plasticity, which allows them to adapt to the variations in the microenvironment. While this adaptability is advantageous during wound healing, it can also be exploited in cancer scenarios. Thus, clinical and preclinical investigations that target macrophages as a therapeutic strategy appear promising. Existing research indicates that targeting macrophages could enhance the effectiveness of current AML treatments. This review addresses the importance of macrophages as therapeutic targets including relevant drugs investigated in clinical trials such as pexidartinib, magrolimab or bexmarilimab, but also provides new insights into lesser-known therapies, like macrophage receptor with a collagenous structure (MACRO) inhibitors and Toll-like receptor (TLR) agonists.

Background and Objectives: Squamous cell carcinoma (SQCC) represents a significant proportion of human malignancies affecting various anatomical sites, including the lung. Understanding the prognostic factors is crucial for establishing effective risk stratification in these patients, as multiple critical aspects significantly impact overall survival. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 99 patients with operable lung SQCC treated at a tertiary center. The exclusion criteria included patients under 18, those with in situ or metastatic SQCC, and those who received neoadjuvant therapy. The surgical specimens were re-analyzed, and data were collected on multiple variables, including pTNM staging, tumor characteristics, and overall survival (OS). The Kaplan–Meier survival analysis and Cox regression models were used to identify significant prognostic factors. Results: The Kaplan–Meier analysis showed a median survival of 36 months with a 65.65% mortality rate. Significant factors influencing survival included keratinization, histological grading, tumor size and stage, pleural invasion, tumor cell arrangement, tumor budding, spread through air space (STAS), and mitotic index. A multiple Cox regression highlighted the nonkeratinizing tumors, advanced pT stages, single-cell invasion, and high mitotic index as key predictors of poorer outcomes. The nonkeratinizing tumors showed higher mortality and shorter median survival rates compared to keratinizing tumors. The tumor staging, cell arrangement, and tumor budding significantly impacted the survival curves. Conclusions: The study underscores the importance of detailed histopathological evaluations in lung SQCC. The nonkeratinizing tumors, advanced pT stage, single-cell invasion, and high mitotic index were associated with higher hazard rates, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive grading system incorporating these factors to improve prognostic accuracy and guide treatment strategies.

The HLA profile is essential in cell and tissue transplantation, particularly in patients with autoimmune conditions and infections. Due to the extreme polymorphism in certain HLA loci, it also serves as a key tool for population genetic analysis. This study aimed to identify the allele and haplotype distributions of HLA class I (A, B, and C) and class II (DRB1) genotypes in unrelated hematopoietic stem cell donors. A retrospective analysis was conducted between 2016 and 2020 on 9832 Transylvanian volunteers, divided into Romanian and Hungarian groups based on self-reported ethnicity. Using PCR-SSO for HLA typing, significant differences were found in allele frequencies between ethnic groups. A total of 19 HLA-A, 31 HLA-B, 14 HLA-C, and 13 HLA-DRB1 distinct allele groups were identified between ethnic groups. Notably, B*18, B*51, and C*12 were more frequent in Romanians, while B*44, B*40, and C*07 were more common in Hungarians. Differences in haplotype distributions were also observed, with HLA-A*02~B*18~C*07~DRB1*11 being significantly more frequent in Romanians. Understanding these population-specific HLA profiles can improve donor matching for hematologic diseases, enhancing patient outcomes and access to life-saving hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Recent research has suggested that category theory can provide useful insights into the field of machine learning (ML). One example is improving the connection between an ML problem and the design of a corresponding ML algorithm. A tool from category theory called a Kan extension is used to derive the design of an unsupervised anomaly detection algorithm for a commonly used benchmark, the Occupancy dataset. Achieving an accuracy of 93.5% and an ROCAUC of 0.98, the performance of this algorithm is compared to state-of-the-art anomaly detection algorithms tested on the Occupancy dataset. These initial results demonstrate that category theory can offer new perspectives with which to attack problems, particularly in making more direct connections between the solutions and the problem’s structure.

Background and Objectives: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a genetic disease that is massively underdiagnosed worldwide. Affected patients are at high risk of cardiovascular events at young ages. Early intervention in childhood could help prevent heart attacks and cerebral strokes in these patients. Materials and Methods: We conducted an interventional study including 10 patients that previously underwent genetic testing for familial hypercholesterolemia. These patients received lifestyle and diet recommendations that they followed for a year before being reevaluated. Results: Patients with negative genetic testing were able to achieve lower levels in their lipid panel values compared to the patients with positive genetic testing, with lifestyle changes alone. LDL-cholesterol levels decreased by 18.5% in patients without FH while patients genetically confirmed with FH failed to achieve lower LDL-cholesterol levels without medication. Conclusions: Genetic testing for FH is not always part of screening algorithms for FH. Some studies even advise against it. Our study proved the importance of genetic testing for FH when suspecting this disorder and choosing the treatment course for patients.

Background/Objectives: The main aim of our study was to analyze the stabilometric parameters in relation to hip and knee muscle force in children with unilateral slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) who had undergone surgical treatment. Another objective was to compare the stabilometry in three testing situations (eyes open, eyes closed, and head retroflexed). Methods: In total, 26 patients with unilateral right SCFE treated via in situ fixation with one percutaneous screw performed stabilometry assessments under three different situations (with their eyes open, with their eyes closed, and with their head retroflexed) and isometric muscle force assessment of the bilateral hip flexors, extensors, abductors and adductors and bilateral knee flexors and extensors. Results: No significant differences between the right side (affected hip) and left side (non-affected hip) were recorded for all of the tested muscle groups. We found significant negative correlations between the 90% confidence ellipse area (eyes open condition) and left knee extensors (p = 0.028), right knee flexors (p = 0.041), and left knee flexors (p = 0.02), respectively. When performing the comparison between the eyes open and eyes closed situations, there were significant differences in CoP path length (p < 0.0001) and maximum CoP speed (p = 0.048); the parameters increased in the eyes closed situation. Conclusions: Better postural stability is acquired when assessed with eyes open or with the head retroflexed in contrast with eyes closed testing.

Improper thermal cycles on duplex stainless steels can lead to the formation of detrimental phases or alter the proportion of ferrite and austenite phases, thus influencing the material’s mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of aging (at 850 and 950 °C) and solubilization (at 1000 and 1150 °C) thermal treatments on microstructure, indentation hardness, elasticity modulus, and susceptibility to intergranular corrosion of UNS S32205 duplex stainless steel. The sigma phase (σ) formation in the aged samples, with hardness values between 8 and 10 GPa, was confirmed. Furthermore, the pieces treated from 1000 °C upwards showed that increased temperature favored the formation of more equiaxial grains and the ferrite fraction growth. The thermal treatments barely affected the elasticity modulus of austenite and ferrite grains, increasing the hardness of ferrite. The effect of sulfuric acid concentration in the intergranular corrosion was evaluated. Also, the deconvolution of the corrosion curves permits the determination of the influence of the different phases in the corrosion performance. These tests revealed sensitization only at the σ phase grain boundaries in the samples treated at 850 °C in electrolytes containing H2SO4 2.5 mol/L and HCl 1 mol/L. Although the treatment at 950 °C led to the σ phase formation, its higher corrosion resistance was ascribed to the lower volumetric fraction of this phase, its morphology, and its increased Cr mobility compared to the 850 °C treatment. Therefore, it was shown that the σ characteristics and the sulfuric acid concentrations are determining factors in the UNS S32205 intergranular corrosion resistance.

DNA structure has many potential places where endogenous compounds and xenobiotics can bind. Therefore, xenobiotics bind along the sites of the nucleic acid with the aim of changing its structure, its genetic message, and, implicitly, its functions. Currently, there are several mechanisms known to be involved in DNA binding. These mechanisms are covalent and non-covalent interactions. The covalent interaction or metal base coordination is an irreversible binding and it is represented by an intra-/interstrand cross-link. The non-covalent interaction is generally a reversible binding and it is represented by intercalation between DNA base pairs, insertion, major and/or minor groove binding, and electrostatic interactions with the sugar phosphate DNA backbone. In the present review, we focus on the types of DNA–metal complex interactions (including some representative examples) and on presenting the methods currently used to study them.

Background: Intense physical activity is known to generate high levels of oxidative stress, and supplementation with bioactive products with powerful antioxidant effects is often recommended. In this context, the present study aims to evaluate the potential benefits of supplementing the diet of professional combat fighters with a new bioactive formulation based on Aronia melanocarpa (black chokeberry) and bee pollen, a natural combination with a balanced ratio of macro- and micronutrients, rich in proteins and polyphenols. Methods: A total of 31 professional combat fighters were selected to participate in this study. Due to allergic medical history, two were excluded, and the remaining 29 were divided into two groups: 14 in the control and 15 in the supplementation group. The supplemented group consumed daily 40 g of novel supplement based on a combination of dried black chokeberry and bee pollen (1:2 ratio) for 4 weeks. Results: A statistically significant increase in plasma antioxidant capacity was observed in the supplemented group compared to control related to the time and group factors at the end of this study. During this study, a significant increase in neutrophils was recorded in both groups. Supplementation with black chokeberry and bee pollen generated no significant modifications in inflammatory markers, body composition, glycemia, maximum aerobic capacity, blood glycemia, hemoglobin or red cell line. Conclusion: This clinical study pointed out a positive result in terms of plasma antioxidant capacity upon administration of the novel nutraceutical formulation.

Background: The pathogenesis of MASLD (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease) is driven by environmental, genetic, metabolic, immune, and inflammatory factors. IL-17 and TLR4 determine hepatic steatosis, inflammation, and finally fibrosis. Objectives: To explore the associations between the plasma levels of inflammatory markers, TLR4, and the cytokines IL17A/F, as well as their connections with the degree of hepatic steatosis and the risk of hepatic fibrosis (defined by the FIB-4 score) in MASLD patients. Methods: The study cohort included 80 patients diagnosed with MASLD. The IL-17A/F and TLR4 serum concentrations were determined using the ELISA method. Results: We found a significant difference in the CAR levels (C-reactive protein to albumin ratio) when comparing MASLD patients with severe steatosis to those with mild/moderate steatosis (Student’s t test, t (71) = 2.32, p = 0.023). The PIV (pan-immune inflammatory value) was positively correlated with the SII (systemic immune inflammation index), (r = 0.86, p < 0.0001) and the CAR (r = 0.41, p = 0.033) in MASLD patients with severe steatosis. In contrast, increased values of the LMR (lymphocyte to monocyte ratio) were significantly associated, with decreased levels of the SII (ρ = −0.38, p = 0.045). We also found a positive correlation between the CAR and the SII (r = 0.41, p = 0.028). In patients with mild/moderate steatosis, a significant positive correlation was observed between the SII and IL17A (r = 0.36, p = 0.010), the PIV and the CAR (r = 0.29, p = 0.011), the PIV and the SII (r = 0.87, p < 0.0001) and the PIV and IL17A (r = 0.3, p = 0.036). A negative correlation was observed between the LMR and the SII (r = −0.55, p < 0.0001) and the CAR and IL17F (r = −0.37, p = 0.011). Regarding the inflammatory markers, the PIV (336.4 vs. 228.63, p = 0.0107), and the SII (438.47 vs. 585.39, p = 0.0238) had significantly lower levels in patients with an intermediate–high risk of hepatic fibrosis as compared with the patients with a low risk of hepatic fibrosis. The PNI (prognostic nutritional index) (47.16 vs. 42.41, p = 0.0392) had significantly different levels in patients with the likelihood of hepatic fibrosis than those with a low risk of hepatic fibrosis. Conclusions: Regarding the inflammatory markers, the PIV and the SII hold promise as biomarkers for discriminating between MASLD patients with an intermediate–high risk and those with a low risk of hepatic fibrosis. Our findings underscore the role of IL-17A and its potential relationship with inflammatory markers in MASLD pathogenesis and the progression to hepatic fibrosis.

Introduction: Viral infections cause oxygen deprivation, leading to hypoxia or anoxia in certain tissues. The limitation of mitochondrial respiration is one of the major events during hypoxia that induces alternative metabolic activities and increased levels of certain biomolecules such as nitric oxide (NO) metabolites. In this study, we aimed to investigate the role of NO metabolites and hypoxia in HPV infection. Materials and Methods: We included 36 patients with palmoplantar warts and 36 healthy subjects and performed serum determinations of NO metabolites (direct nitrite, total nitrite, nitrate, and 3-nitrotyrosine) and HIF1α, a marker of hypoxia. Results: We found elevated serum levels in NO metabolites and HIF1α, and decreased direct nitrite/nitrate ratios in patients with warts versus controls. Additionally, we identified statistically significant positive correlations between NO metabolites and HIF1α levels, except for 3-nitrotyrosine. Conclusions: Our findings show that HPV infection causes hypoxia and alterations in NO metabolism and suggest a link between wart development and cellular stress. Our research could provide new insights for a comprehensive understanding of the pathogenesis of cutaneous HPV infections.

Throughout their lifetimes, bridges are exposed to various forces that may lead to displacement and deformation, potentially compromising their structural integrity. Monitoring their structural integrity under environmental factors is essential for safety and maintenance under these conditions. This aspect is a fundamental component of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). Many studies focus on Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), employing various theories, methodologies, and technologies that have advanced rapidly due to the expansion of information technology. The objective of this study is to pinpoint areas where research is lacking in the existing literature on the environmental factors that impact the displacement of bridges, along with the techniques and technology used to monitor these structures. To achieve this objective, the most critical environmental factors and technologies, particularly those that are sensor-based, have been identified through a systematic search of the most popular databases. Subsequently, the study utilized a bibliometric analysis, exploring the challenge and prospective research areas reflected in the specialized literature. The findings indicate a lack of scholarly investigation of environmental factors that influence the Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of bridges, in particular studies regarding the effect of uneven sunlight on structures. The research provides a comprehensive understanding of the Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of bridges and has practical implications for developing effective monitoring methodologies.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive, often fatal lung disease characterized by tissue scarring and declining lung function. The MUC5B promoter polymorphism rs35705950, a significant genetic predisposition for IPF, paradoxically associates with better survival and slower disease progression than other IPF genotypes. This study investigates the potential paradoxical protective effects of this MUC5B variant in lung fibrosis. For this purpose, we developed a transgenic mouse model overexpressing the human MUC5B rs35705950 variant in the proximal large airways. Lung fibrosis was induced through subcutaneous injection of bleomycin. Results demonstrated significantly reduced lung fibrosis severity in transgenic mice compared to wild-type mice, assessed by trichrome staining, Ashcroft scoring, and hydroxyproline levels. Additionally, transgenic mice showed significantly lower levels of inflammatory cells and cytokines (TNFα, IL-6, IFNγ) and growth factors (PDGF, CTGF, IL-13) in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and lung tissues. There was also a significant decrease in mRNA expressions of fibrosis-related markers (periostin, fibronectin, Col1a1). In summary, this study reveals that mucin overexpression related to the MUC5B rs35705950 variant in the large airways significantly attenuates lung fibrosis and inflammatory responses in transgenic mice. These findings suggest that the rs35705950 variant modulates inflammatory and fibrotic responses in the proximal airways, which may contribute to the slower disease progression observed in IPF patients carrying this variant. Our study offers a possible explanation for the paradoxical beneficial effects of the MUC5B variant despite its role as a significant predisposing factor for IPF.

This paper presents the development of the hardware and software architecture of a sixdegrees of freedom (DOF) parallel robot (PARA-SILSROB) by illustrating all the stages undertaken to achieve the experimental model of the robot. Based on the experimental model, the control architecture is also presented, which is primarily based on a master–slave control system through which the surgeon controls the robot using the master console composed of commercial peripheral components (two 3D Space Mouse devices, computer, and keyboard) integrated with the solution developed in this study and presented in this paper. The robot was developed also according to the surgical protocol and surgeon’s requirements, and for the functionality testing of the mechanical structure, two experimental stands were used. The first stand presented several surgical steps, such as manipulation, resection, and suture of experimental tissues (simulating real-life robot-assisted surgical maneuvers) using commercial instruments. The second stand presented a simulation of an esophagectomy for esophageal cancer and digestive reconstruction through a right intercostal approach. For this testing phase, the organs were created using 3D reconstruction, and their simplified models were 3D printed using PolyJet technology. Furthermore, the input trajectory generated using the master console was compared with the robot actuator’s movements and the obtained results were used for validation of the proposed robot control system.

Salivary gland tumors are a rare and heterogeneous group of neoplasms of the head and neck region. The mixed category of these tumors include the following entities: pleomorphic adenoma (PA), carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CEPA), salivary carcinosarcoma (CS), and metastasizing PA (MPA). The most common benign tumor of the salivary glands is PA. Metastasis and malignant degeneration have been reported in cases of PA of a salivary gland origin. Judging by their behavior, MPA, CEPA, and CS can be considered aggressive tumors. Invasive CEPA has been identified in the parotid gland more frequently. MPA and CS cases reported in the current literature are rare. In this paper, we present, narratively, the clinico-morphological features of this group of mixed tumors.

The aim of the study was to collect data about the prevalence and risk factors of apical periodontitis in a population of endodontically treated patients. The study group included 151 patients (52 males, 99 females; mean age 48.36 ± 15.708 yrs.) with 391 endodontically treated teeth (mean follow-up of 5.25 ± 1.759 yrs.). According to the initial tooth diagnosis, root-filled teeth were divided into Group A, root-filled teeth treated for pulpitis or for the purpose of prosthetic pulpectomies (vital pulp group), and Group B, root-filled teeth with non-vital pulp (necrotic pulp). Clinical and radiographic evaluation of the root and its periapical area were performed to establish the success/failure of endodontic therapy, the quality of the root canal fillings (length, density, taper), and coronal restoration. The presence of recurrent caries, periodontal pathology, or endo-periodontal lesions were also recorded. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to determine the risk factors for apical periodontitis and calculate their odds ratios (ORs). For the root-filled vital pulp tooth group, the highest risks for apical periodontitis are associated with inadequate homogeneity (OR 30.938), periodontitis (OR 9.226), and over-filling (OR 8.800). For the root-filled non-vital pulp tooth group, the highest risks are associated with periodontitis (OR 4.235) and age over 60 yrs. (OR 4.875). For the necrotic pulp tooth group, multivariate analysis identified an age > 60 yrs., filled molars, intracanal posts, poor coronal restoration quality, under-filling, and periodontitis as significant combined risk factors. Inadequate root canal filling and periodontitis in both groups were risk factors associated with most cases of apical periodontitis. Other risk factors include age > 60 yrs., poor coronal restoration quality, and the presence of intracanal posts in root-filled teeth with necrotic pulp.

Gastric cancer stands as the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally, primarily comprising adenocarcinomas, categorized by anatomic location and histologic type. Often diagnosed at advanced stages, gastric cancer prognosis remains poor. To address the critical need for accurate tumoral markers for gastric cancer diagnosis, we conducted a study to assess classical markers like CEA and CA-19-9 alongside the novel marker miR-106. Our investigation revealed distinct dynamics of these markers compared to non-cancerous groups, although no disparities were observed across different disease stages. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses demonstrated that elevated levels of miR-106, CEA and CA 19-9 were predictive of a positive histopathological exam, with the respective odds ratios of 12.032 (95% CI: 1.948–74.305), 30 (95% CI: 3.141–286.576), and 55.866 (95% CI: 4.512–691.687). Subsequently, we utilized predicted probabilities from regression models to construct receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, identifying CA 19-9 as the optimal predictor for gastric adenocarcinoma diagnosis when considering age and gender, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.936 (p < 0.001). Hence, classical markers exhibit superior performance compared to the novel marker miR-106 in predicting gastric adenocarcinoma.

The aim of this study was to analyze other possible new markers of severity, at hospital admission, that can be assessed in patients with type 2 diabetes and a SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) infection. Our study included 90 subjects: 45 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, and 45 healthy persons as controls. The serum level of ceruloplasmin at hospital admission was statistically significant and directly correlated with the severity of COVID-19 (coronavirus disease) (p = 0.037) and with the serum level of IL-6 (interleukin 6) (p = 0.0001). Ceruloplasmin was statistically significant and inversely correlated with the serum iron level (p = 0.0001). However, we observed that ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) decreased in severe forms of SARS-CoV-2 infections in patients with type 2 diabetes (p = 0.001). Moreover, the decrease in ACE levels was correlated with an increase in IL-6 levels in these patients (p = 0.001). IL-6 increases were statistically significant and inversely correlated with serum iron, transferrin, and ACE levels. There was a noticed decreasing tendency of the transferrin depending on the severity of the COVID-19 infection (p = 0.0001). In addition to the known severity factors in the context of infection with the new coronavirus, increased concentrations of ceruloplasmin and decreased concentrations of ACE and transferrin may represent new markers of COVID-19 severity in patients with type 2 diabetes. These parameters, if analyzed upon admission to the hospital, could better inform health professionals about the evolution towards more severe forms of SARS-CoV-2 infections.

Chronic delta hepatitis is a global health problem. Although a smaller percentage of chronic HBV-infected patients are coinfected with the hepatitis delta virus, these patients have a higher risk of an accelerated progression to fulminant “delta hepatitis”, cirrhosis, hepatic decompensation, and hepatocellular carcinoma, putting a financial strain on the healthcare system and increasing the need for a liver transplant. Since its discovery, tremendous efforts have been directed toward understanding the intricate pathogenic mechanisms, discovering the complex viral replication process, the essential replicative intermediates, and cell division-mediated viral spread, which enables virion viability. The consideration of the interaction between HBV and HDV is crucial in the process of developing novel pharmaceuticals. Until just recently, interferon-based therapy was the only treatment available worldwide. This review aims to present the recent advancements in understanding the life cycle of HDV, which have consequently facilitated the development of innovative drug classes. Additionally, we will examine the antiviral strategies currently in phases II and III of development, including bulevirtide (an entry inhibitor), lonafarnib (a prenylation inhibitor), and REP 2139 (an HBsAg release inhibitor).

Infections represent a major complication for burn-injured patients. The aim of this study was to highlight the changes in the incidence and antimicrobial resistance of bacterial strains isolated from burn patients, at the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, in relation to the antibiotics used during the pandemic. A comparative analysis of the demographic data and the microorganisms identified in the clinical samples of two groups of burn patients admitted to a university hospital in Romania was carried out. The first group consisted of 48 patients and the second of 69 patients, hospitalized in January–August 2020 and 2023, respectively. The bacterial species with the highest incidence were S. aureus, A. baumannii, Pseudomonas spp. The significant changes between 2023 and 2020 are reflected in the increase in the frequency of non-fermentative Gram-negative bacteria, especially S. maltophilia, and the increase in antimicrobial resistance of Pseudomonas and Klebsiella spp. Klebsiella spp. did not change in frequency (7%), but there was a significant increase in the incidence of K. pneumoniae strains with pan-drug resistant behaviour to antibiotics (40%), including colistin. The phenomenon can be explained by the selection of specimens carrying multiple resistance genes, as a result of antibiotic treatment during the COVID-19 period. The post-pandemic antimicrobial resistance detected in burn patients indicates the need for permanent surveillance of the resistance trends, primarily due to the limited therapeutic options available for these patients.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive degenerative disorder that causes behavioral changes, cognitive decline, and memory loss. Currently, AD is incurable, and the few available medicines may, at best, improve symptoms or slow down AD progression. One main challenge in drug delivery to the brain is the presence of the blood–brain barrier (BBB), a semi-permeable layer around cerebral capillaries controlling the influx of blood-borne particles into the brain. In this paper, a mathematical model of drug transport to the brain is proposed that incorporates two mechanisms of BBB crossing: transcytosis and diffusion. To account for the structural damage and accumulation of harmful waste in the brain caused by AD, the diffusion is assumed to be anomalous and is modeled using spatial Riemann–Liouville fractional-order derivatives. The model’s parameters are taken from published experimental observations of the delivery to mice brains of the orally administered AD drug donepezil hydrochloride. Numerical simulations suggest that drug delivery modalities should depend on the BBB fitness and anomalous diffusion and be tailored to AD severity. These results may inspire novel brain-targeted drug carriers for improved AD therapies.

Cancer is a global health problem, with the incidence rate estimated to reach 40% of the population by 2030. Although there are currently several therapeutic methods, none of them guarantee complete healing. Plant-derived natural products show high therapeutic potential in the management of various types of cancer, with some of them already being used in current practice. Among different classes of phytocompounds, pentacyclic triterpenoids have been in the spotlight of research on this topic. Ursolic acid (UA) and its structural isomer, oleanolic acid (OA), represent compounds intensively studied and tested in vitro and in vivo for their anticancer and chemopreventive properties. Since natural compounds can rarely be used in practice as such due to their characteristic physico-chemical properties, to tackle this problem, their derivatization has been attempted, obtaining compounds with improved solubility, absorption, stability, effectiveness, and reduced toxicity. This review presents various UA and OA derivatives that have been synthesized and evaluated in recent studies for their anticancer potential. It can be observed that the most frequent structural transformations were carried out at the C-3, C-28, or both positions simultaneously. It has been demonstrated that conjugation with heterocycles or cinnamic acid, derivatization as hydrazide, or transforming OH groups into esters or amides increases anticancer efficacy.

Nesfatin-1, deriving from a precursor protein, NUCB2, is a newly discovered molecule with anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anorexigenic effects. It was initially identified in the central nervous system (CNS) and received increasing interest due to its energy-regulating properties. However, research showed that nesfatin-1 is also expressed in peripheral tissues, including the digestive system. The aim of this review is to give a résumé of the present state of knowledge regarding its structure, immunolocalization, and potential implications in diseases with inflammatory components. The main objective was to focus on its clinical importance as a diagnostic biomarker and potential therapeutic molecule in a variety of disorders, among which digestive disorders were of particular interest. Previous studies have shown that nesfatin-1 regulates the balance between pro- and antioxidant agents, which makes nesfatin-1 a promising therapeutic agent. Further in-depth research regarding the underlying mechanisms of action is needed for a better understanding of its effects.

(1) Colorectal cancer is a major cause of cancer-related death, with colorectal adenomas (CRAs) serving as precursors. Identifying risk factors such as vitamin D deficiency and the insulin-like growth factor (IGF) axis is crucial for prevention. (2) This case–control study included 85 participants (53 CRA patients and 32 controls) who underwent colonoscopy. We measured serum vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), calcidiol (vitamin D metabolite), calcitriol (active vitamin D metabolite), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) to explore their associations with CRA risk. (3) Results: We found that lower cholecalciferol levels were a significant risk factor for CRA (OR = 4.63, p = 0.004). Although no significant differences in calcidiol and calcitriol levels were observed between CRA patients and controls, calcidiol deficiency was common in the study population. IGF-1 levels inversely correlated with age, calcitriol, and IGFBP-3 in CRA patients. (4) This study highlights the potential of lower cholecalciferol levels to detect patients at risk of CRA when calcidiol values cannot, suggesting the importance of evaluating different vitamin D metabolites in cancer prevention research. Our findings underscore the need to further investigate the interactions between calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D, and the IGF axis in colorectal cancer development.

Among many other applications, electronic converters can be used with sensors with analogue outputs (DC voltage). This article presents an analogue computation converter with two DC voltages at the inputs (one input changes the frequency of the output signal, another input changes the amplitude of the output signal) that provide a periodic sinusoidal signal (with variable frequency and amplitude) at the output. On the basis of the analogue computation converter is a nonhomogeneous second-order linear ordinary differential equation which is solved analogically. The analogue computation converter consists of analogue multipliers and operational amplifiers, composed of seven function circuits: two analogue multiplication circuits, two analogue addition circuits, one non-inverting amplifier, and two integration circuits (with RC time constants). At the output of an oscillator is a sinusoidal signal which depends on the DC voltages applied on two inputs (0 ÷ 10 V): at one input, a DC voltage is applied to linearly change the sinusoidal frequency output (up to tens of kHz, according to two time constants), and at the other input, a DC voltage is applied to linearly change the amplitude of the oscillator output signal (up to 10 V). It can be used with sensors which have a DC output voltage and must be converted to a sine wave signal with variable frequency and amplitude with the aim of transmitting information over longer distances through wires. This article presents the detailed theory of the functioning, simulations, and experiments of the analogue computation converter.

This study investigates the influence of synthesis methods and electrode geometry on the physico-chemical properties of 5%Gd-doped SnO2. Two distinct synthesis routes, co-precipitation and hydrothermal growth, were employed, resulting in powders denoted as SnO2: Gd 5%-CP and SnO2: Gd 5%-HT. Morpho-structural and textural analyses reveal a uniform morphology consisting of quasi-spherical nanoparticles with dimensions of ~6 nm and mesoporosity for CP and a non-uniform morphology with larger nanoparticles of ~42 nm, with irregular shapes and macroporosity for the HT sample, respectively. The powders were deposited onto alumina substrates equipped with platinum interdigital electrodes with alternative gaps of 200 μm and 100 μm. The back-side heater allows for variation in the temperature of the layer. Sensing properties assessed under in-field-like atmospheres simulated by a computer-controlled Gas Mixing System reveal higher sensitivity to methane compared to carbon dioxide. Although the sensor signals did not differ quantitatively, they exhibited distinct saturation tendencies with an increasing methane concentration, attributed to the morpho-structure and porosity induced by the synthesis method. Differentiation was achieved by varying the interdigital gap of the electrodes, highlighting different sensor signals and conduction mechanisms, determined by the specific size of the crystallites.

This study presents the behavior of the identified yeast strain S. cerevisiae, isolated from Busuioacă de Bohotin grapes from the Pietroasa winery, during the process of fermentation to obtain dry active yeast biomass for the winemaking process. In this respect, we promoted an optimization strategy for obtaining active dry yeast biomass. The cultivation conditions for micropilot fermentation (temperature, pH, carbon source, and nitrogen source) were selected and designed according to a Taguchi design with four factors and three levels. Reproducibility testing was conducted under specific fermentation parameters: temperature (32 °C), pH (4.5), carbon source (12%), and nitrogen source (0.7%). Following the optimization process, two combinations of cultivation parameters were selected, and one of them, based on the results, was selected for further analysis. Quantitative data were obtained, showing dry yeast biomass (DCW) at 1.39 g/100 mL and protein content at 45.57%. The active yeast was then used in the winemaking process for Tămâioasă Românească and Busuioacă de Bohotin varieties at Pietroasa winery for validation. This optimization aims to facilitate easy and rapid production of fresh wine yeast tailored to the local winemaking practices of Pietroasa winery, with real application potential in other viticultural areas, aligning with the terroir concept.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and Parkinson’s disease (PD) are the two most frequent age-related chronic diseases. There are many similarities between the two diseases: both are chronic diseases; both are the result of a decrease in a specific substance—insulin in T2D and dopamine in PD; and both are caused by the destruction of specific cells—beta pancreatic cells in T2D and dopaminergic neurons in PD. Recent epidemiological and experimental studies have found that there are common underlying mechanisms in the pathophysiology of T2D and PD: chronic inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, impaired protein handling and ferroptosis. Epidemiological research has indicated that there is a higher risk of PD in individuals with T2D. Moreover, clinical studies have observed that the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease worsen significantly after the onset of T2D. This article provides an up-to-date review on the intricate interplay between oxidative stress, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and ferroptosis in PD and T2D. By understanding the shared molecular pathways and how they can be modulated, we can develop more effective therapies, or we can repurpose existing drugs to improve patient outcomes in both disorders.

Vitamin D deficiency and type 2 diabetes mellitus are risk factors for colorectal cancer, suggesting a role for vitamin D receptor (VDR) and insulin receptor (INSR) gene polymorphisms. We investigated the prevalence of the VDR-BsmI (rs1544410) and NsiI A/G-INSR (rs2059806) polymorphisms and their associations with colorectal adenoma (CRA) in a Romanian population. A case–control study was conducted with 110 participants (67 with CRA and 43 controls) who underwent colonoscopy. Polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis was used to determine the genotype and allele frequencies of the two polymorphisms. Regarding rs1544410 and CRA patients, genotype distribution was 35% B/B, 47% B/b, and 19% b/b. In the controls, the distribution was 21% B/B, 45% B/b, and 34% b/b. For rs2059806, 12% of CRA patients had A/A, 30% A/G, and 58% G/G, while 8% of the controls had A/A, 40% A/G, and 52% G/G. The recessive model showed an odds ratio of 2.84 (95% CI: 1.04–7.72, p = 0.033) for the b/b genotype. CRA patients with b/b or G/G genotypes were diagnosed at a younger age. The b allele of the rs1544410 was a risk factor for CRA. Patients with the b/b and G/G genotypes were diagnosed earlier.

Our study investigates the relevance and application of key performance indicators (KPIs) and key risk indicators (KRIs) in business management from 1992 to 2023 through a comprehensive bibliometric analysis performed in RStudio using the Bibliometrix platform and in VOSviewer. Utilizing data from the Web of Science database, we identify trends, key themes, and influential research in this domain, observing an annual growth rate of 17.76%. Our analyses include the top 10 most globally cited documents, word clouds based on authors’ keywords and Keywords Plus, clustering by coupling, co-occurrence networks, and factorial analysis. Our findings reveal a significant increase in research interest post-2004, with sustainability and corporate social responsibility emerging as central themes. We confirm positive correlations between KPIs, improved organizational performance, and effective risk management via KRIs. This research underscores the importance of international collaboration and diverse thematic exploration in advancing the field.

Background: Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) remains a major global health challenge, with significant morbidity and mortality associated with chronic infections. Methods: This study examines the epidemiology, screening, and risk factors associated with HBV in Romania, focusing on a comprehensive national screening program, LIVE(RO)2, involving 320,000 individuals (majority of them considered vulnerable population). A questionnaire was used to collect information on the potential risk factors for HBV transmission. Results: The overall prevalence rate of HBV chronic infection among all the participants tested was 1.67% (confidence interval: 1.63–1.72%), with significant differences (p = 0.0001) between participants from the main geographical regions of residence (North-East 1.89%, South 1.38%, South-East 2.06%, and South-West 1.54%). Male persons aged 30–49 or 60–69 years old, from the rural and Eastern parts of Romania and non-Romanian ethnia, with a low level of education, unvaccinated, not married, unemployed, with family members with hepatitis, with personal histories of blood or blood product transfusion, surgical interventions, tattooing, hospitalizations, imprisonment, haemodialysis, unsafe sexual contacts, or with sexual transmitted infectious diseases were risk factors associated with HBsAg seropositivity. Conclusions: Our findings highlight significant demographic and epidemiological patterns of reduced HBV prevalence even in vulnerable persons, as well as modified risk factors and the impact of socio-economic factors.

Objectives: Congenital heart defects (CHDs) are among the most frequent congenital defects, and they significantly burden the healthcare system due to their high mortality rate and high cost of care for survivors. We aimed to highlight the incidence of CHDs in a tertiary center in Western Romania. Methods: A retrospective study was carried out between 2018 and 2022 at the “Pius Brinzeu” Emergency County Hospital Timisoara. Relevant information about the mothers and the newborns were collected and statistically analyzed. Results: The incidence of CHDs from 2018 to 2022 in our center was 5.3%. Eleven types of malformations were diagnosed postnatally in 541 newborns, with 28.8% of cases having more than one type of CHD. The antenatal detection rate was 28%, with the highest rates for tetralogy of Fallot, hypoplastic left heart syndrome, or significant ventricular septal defects and the lowest for pulmonary stenosis. The lower antenatal detection rate was influenced mainly by incomplete or absent prenatal care. Conclusions: The incidence of CHDs is clearly dependent of a multifactorial approach, and the results highlight this. With an incidence almost 50% lower than reported within the literature and a low rate of prenatal detections, CHDs could be a more of a burden to endure regarding medical treatment. Improvements in patients’ education, prenatal care, and screening programs could improve diagnosis, decrease mortality, and optimize postnatal care.

Background: Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is a major public health concern worldwide, affecting all age and social groups. Methods: In this retrospective study, of the 8265 autopsies performed in the Institute of Legal Medicine, 1618 cases of SCD were included. The aim of this study is to identify demographic characteristics, etiological factors, epidemiological characteristics and risk factors that lead to SCD. Results: The highest incidence of SCD was in age group 40–69 years (65.0%), 71.6% of this age group being men. Of the total number, 32.1% (520) occurred in the emergency room. The most common cause of sudden death is represented by coronary atherosclerotic disease, reported in 89.8% (1453) of cases, tricoronary lesions being found in 60% (870) of cases. Etiological factors of SCD encountered during autopsies were acute myocardial infarction in 13.9% (225), dilated cardiomyopathy 43.9% (710), cardiac hypertrophy 579 (36.07%), pericarditis 1.9% (30), myocarditis 1.73% (28) and adipositas cordis 5% (81). Along with epicardial fat and BMI, alcohol consumption was recorded in 17.9% (290), this being a potential trigger. Conclusions: Based on forensic autopsy and histological findings, a wide variety of factors are involved in the etiopathogenesis of SCD, some of which can be eliminated through preventive measures implemented early.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as an essential tool in healthcare for optimizing healthcare delivery and improving patient outcomes. This study is motivated by using AI in healthcare as a step for social responsibility implementation. The research aimed to investigate the attitudes of healthcare professionals on this issue, and it assessed physicians’ opinions regarding their perceptions of AI and their intention to use and implement AI tools in their activity. An electronic survey was proposed during February–June 2024 to a sample of healthcare professionals (309 were admitted into the study, 62 males and 247 females, with a mean age of 42). The results of the survey highlighted both groups’ excellent perceptions of AI and the low perceived knowledge of AI, which arises from more technical questions. The use of AI in healthcare represents a step for social responsibility implementation; it is an unstoppable process, and stakeholders should take into consideration investing more in monitoring and training activities.
