Search

Paper waste in the mockups design with regular, irregular, and amorphous patterns is a critical problem in digital printing presses. Paper waste reduction directly impacts production costs, generating business and environmental benefits. This problem can be mapped to the two-dimensional irregular bin-packing problem. In this paper, an iterated local search algorithm using a novel neighborhood structure to detect overlaps between amorphous shapes is introduced. This algorithm is used to solve the paper waste problem, modeled as one 2D irregular bin-packing problem. The experimental results show that this approach works efficiently and effectively to detect and correct the overlaps between regular, irregular, and amorphous figures.

The administration of A/B exams usually involves the use of items. Issues arise when the pre-establishment of a question bank is necessary and the inconsistency in the knowledge points to be tested (in the two exams) reduces the exams &lsquo, fairness&rsquo, These are critical for a large multi-teacher course wherein the teachers are changed such that the course and examination content are altered every few years. However, a fair test with randomly participating students should still be a guaranteed subject with no item pool. Through data-driven decision-making, this study collected data related to a term test for a compulsory general course for empirical assessments, pre-processed the data and used item response theory to statistically estimate the difficulty, discrimination and lower asymptotic for each item in the two exam papers. Binary goal programing was finally used to analyze and balance the fairness of A/B exams without an item pool. As a result, pairs of associated questions in the two exam papers were optimized in terms of their overall balance in three dimensions (as the goals) through the paired exchanges of items. These exam papers guarantee their consistency (in the tested knowledge points) and also ensure the fairness of the term test (a key psychological factor that motivates continued studies). Such an application is novel as the teacher(s) did not have a pre-set question bank and could formulate the fairest strategy for the A/B exam papers. The model can be employed to address similar teaching practice issues.

The International Institute of Knowledge Innovation and Invention (IIKII) is an institute that promotes the exchange of innovations and inventions, and establishes a communication platform for international innovations and researches. In 2019, IIKII cooperated with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Tainan Section Sensors Council to hold IEEE conferences such as IEEE ICIASE 2019, IEEE ECBIOS 2019, IEEE ICKII 2019, ICUSA-GAME 2019, and IEEE ECICE 2019. This Special Issue entitled “Selected Papers from IIKII 2019 conferences” aims to select excellent papers from IIKII 2019 conferences, including symmetry in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, and computer science, etc. It selected 21 excellent papers from 750 papers presented in IIKII 2019 conferences on the topic of symmetry. The main goals of this Special Issue are to encourage scientists to publish their experimental and theoretical results in as much detail as possible, and to discover new scientific knowledge relevant to the topic of symmetry.

This paper examines the added value of a digital tool that constitutes a new model to introduce students to multiplication. Drawing on the theory of semiotic mediation, the semiotic potential of this new model is analysed with respect to the same task that can be solved in two different settings (the digital tool and pencil and paper). The analysis shows that the task solutions undergo significant changes depending on to the technological settings. Even though the end product of the model–task dyads might look the same in both settings, the product emerges from the different processes that would mediate quite different meanings for multiplication. This suggests that while designing tasks that involve mathematical models, rather than focusing only on the end product, considering the whole process would reveal the extensive potential meanings the model–task dyad can mediate.

In order to recognize outstanding papers that have been published in Symmetry, the Editorial Board established an annual “Symmetry Best Paper Award”. We are pleased to announce the first “Symmetry Best Paper Award” for 2015. This short paper concerns the analysis of the M/M/k queueing system with customer abandonment. In this system, service managers provide a finite buffer space, which is a waiting area that prevents customers from abandoning the system. Abandonment of the system can occur from reneging (exiting from the queue while waiting), and/or balking (leaving the system without waiting). We derive an analytical expression to represent the impact of the buffer space capacity on the delay probability and the abandonment probability for a system with deferred abandonment. The result indicates the provision of the buffer space in a large system could only increase the delay probability while the abandonment probability remains unchanged. Despite the benevolent intentions of service managers, providing a buffer space may exacerbate the performance of larger systems.

Over the past four decades, the prophecy from computer pundits and prognosticators pointed to the looming arrival of the paperless office era. However, forty years later, physical paper documents are still playing a significant role due to the ease of use, superior readability, and availability. The drawbacks of paper sheets are that they are hard to modify and retrieve, have limited space, and are environmentally unfriendly. Augmenting paper documents with digital information from mobile devices extends the two-dimensional space of physical paper documents. Various camera-based recognition and detection devices have been proposed to augment paper documents with digital information. However, there are still some limitations that exist in these systems. This paper presents a novel, low cost, spatially aware, mobile system called Ultrasonic PhoneLens. The Ultrasonic PhoneLens adopts two-dimensional dynamic image presentation and ultrasonic sound positioning techniques. It consists of two ultrasonic sound sensors, one Arduino mini-controller board, and one android mobile device. Based on the location of the mobile device over the physical paper, Ultrasonic PhoneLens can retrieve pre-saved digital information from a mobile database for the object (such as a text, a paragraph, or an image) in a paper document. An empirical study was conducted to evaluate the system performance. The results indicate that our system has a better performance in tasks such as browsing multivalent documents and sharing digital information than the Wiimote PhoneLens system.

In this paper, we proposed a scheme that Injects artificial noise from the tag end (IANT) to enhance the physical layer security of the ambient backscatter communication (ABC) system. The difference between the ABC system and the traditional radio frequency identification system is whether it uses the radio frequency (RF) signals in the environment to supply energy and modulation information for passive tags. In the IANT scheme, we select the best tag to communicate with the reader according to the channel quality between tags and reader, and at the same time select another tag to generate artificial noise that affects the receiving effect of the eavesdropper. This paper uses the method of generating noise copies in the reader to reduce the interference of artificial noise on the signal received by the reader. The simulation results show that with the increase in channel quality between tags and reader and the increase in the number of tags, the proposed IANT scheme is significantly superior to the contrast scheme in terms of system achievable secrecy rate, effectively enhancing the physical layer security of the ABC system.

The paper aims to analyze the vibrations of a summing box, used in heavy vehicles. An experimental setup is proposed and used for the analysis of these vibrations transmitted by the box housing, based on the measurement of the mechanical impedance. It is then shown that a simpler measurement, namely that of the generated noise spectrum, can provide equally useful results, with less effort and in a shorter time. The experimental setup is much simpler, involving a sonometer arranged in the experimental assembly. The symmetry of the box allows us to facilitate the execution of the experimental assembly, and the use of the symmetrical structure to facilitate the calculation of vibrations. The results obtained using this method in the case of a redesigned adder box are presented in the paper.

In this paper, the attitudes of experts are observed for the possible changes after taking a certain decision. The decision is taken by two persons with different fields of expertise. There is also an annotation of such changes due to the interference of a third person, which is main idea of this paper. These observations are done by developing fuzzy soft differential equations with the help of optimum fuzzy soft constants (OFSCs), which are obtained through the ranking coefficients. The ranking of alternatives is based on the coefficients, which are obtained through a decision-making process. Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) is exploited to rank the alternatives, and the attitudes of resource persons are examined through phase portraits and line graphs of the respective system of differential equations. The utilization of TOPSIS is a practice of multi-criteria decision-making in the analysis of human behaviours. Dual hesitant fuzzy soft sets are taken to represent the initial data.

In a previous paper, the problem of how the preventive maintenance organization for the k-out-of-n: F system could be used, in order to maximize system availability, was considered. The current paper continues these investigations using a different optimization criterion. The proposed approach is based on decision making theory for regenerative processes. We propose a general procedure for comparing different preventive maintenance strategies based on the ordered statistics distributions, aiming to choose the best one with respect to cost-type criterion. The lifetime distributions of system units are usually unknown and only one or two of their moments are available. For this reason, we pay special attention to the sensitivity analysis of decision making about preventive maintenance, taking into account the shape of the system unit lifetime distributions. A numerical study of two examples based on a real-world system illustrates the results of the proposed approach.

Most of the papers published so far in literature have focused on the theoretical phenomena underlying the formation of chaos, rather than on the investigation of potential applications of chaos to the real world. This paper aims to bridge the gap between chaos theory and chaos applications by presenting a survey of very recent applications of chaos. In particular, the manuscript covers the last three years by describing different applications of chaos as reported in the literature published during the years 2018 to 2020, including the matter related to the symmetry properties of chaotic systems. The topics covered herein include applications of chaos to communications, to distributed sensing, to robotic motion, to bio-impedance modelling, to hardware implementation of encryption systems, to computing and to random number generation.

Increasingly, cities worldwide are striving for green travel and slow traffic, and vigorously developing people-oriented urban pedestrian traffic with sustainability has become a fixture in recent discourse. This paper comprehensively considers the sidewalk’s facilities environment and the status of pedestrian traffic flow; divides the urban pedestrian road system (UPRS) into five subsystems around the underpass, overpass, crosswalk, sidewalk, and road crosswalk; and introduces the basic structure as well as the function of each system. Then, the indicators are classified into two types of crosswalk facilities and sidewalk facilities, and a comprehensive pedestrian road indicator system with the combination of subjective and objective is established. Consequently, the integration of the fuzzy AHP and DEA-based symmetrical technique for the subjective evaluation indicator combined with pedestrian traffic characteristics is developed. A nine-step semantics scale of relative importance was used so that the symmetry of the response of pedestrian satisfaction was maintained. Fuzzy evaluation based on AHP is further modeled, and the DEA is employed to achieve an overall evaluation of the quality of service (QoS) for UPRS. The applicability of the established evaluation system is finally verified through a real case study in Harbin, China. The serviceability assessment method in this paper provides a new idea for planners to conduct sustainability evaluation for UPRS in future urban renewal development.

This paper centers on a discrete-time retrial queue where the server experiences breakdowns and repairs when arriving customers may opt to follow a discipline of a last-come, first-served (LCFS)-type or to join the orbit. We focused on the extensive analysis of the system, and we obtained the stationary distributions of the number of customers in the orbit and in the system by applying the generation function (GF). We provide the stochastic decomposition law and the application bounds for the proximity between the steady-state distributions for the queueing system under consideration and its corresponding standard system. We developed recursive formulae aimed at the calculation of the steady-state of the orbit and the system. We proved that our discrete-time system approximates M/G/1 with breakdowns and repairs. We analyzed the busy period of an auxiliary system, the objective of which was to study the customer’s delay. The stationary distribution of a customer’s sojourn in the orbit and in the system was the object of a thorough and complete study. Finally, we provide numerical examples that outline the effect of the parameters on several performance characteristics and a conclusions section resuming the main research contributions of the paper.

The aim of the present tutorial paper is to recall notions from manifold calculus and to illustrate how these tools prove useful in describing system-theoretic properties. Special emphasis is put on embedded manifold calculus (which is coordinate-free and relies on the embedding of a manifold into a larger ambient space). In addition, we also consider the control of non-linear systems whose states belong to curved manifolds. As a case study, synchronization of non-linear systems by feedback control on smooth manifolds (including Lie groups) is surveyed. Special emphasis is also put on numerical methods to simulate non-linear control systems on curved manifolds. The present tutorial is meant to cover a portion of the mentioned topics, such as first-order systems, but it does not cover topics such as covariant derivation and second-order dynamical systems, which will be covered in a subsequent tutorial paper.

There has been a persistent requirement for safeguarding documents and the data they contain, either in printed or electronic form. This is because the fabrication and faking of documents is prevalent globally, resulting in significant losses for individuals, societies, and industrial sectors, in addition to national security. Therefore, individuals are concerned about protecting their work and avoiding these unlawful actions. Different techniques, such as steganography, cryptography, and coding, have been deployed to protect valuable information. Steganography is an appropriate method, in which the user is able to conceal a message inside another message (cover media). Most of the research on steganography utilizes cover media, such as videos, images, and sounds. Notably, text steganography is usually not given priority because of the difficulties in identifying redundant bits in a text file. To embed information within a document, its attributes must be changed. These attributes may be non-displayed characters, spaces, resized fonts, or purposeful misspellings scattered throughout the text. However, this would be detectable by an attacker or other third party because of the minor change in the document. To address this issue, it is necessary to change the document in such a manner that the change would not be visible to the eye, but could still be decoded using a computer. In this paper, an overview of existing research in this area is provided. First, we provide basic information about text steganography and its general procedure. Next, three classes of text steganography are explained: statistical and random generation, format-based methodologies, and linguistics. The techniques related to each class are analyzed, and particularly the manner in which a unique strategy is provided for hiding secret data. Furthermore, we review the existing works in the development of approaches and algorithms related to text steganography; this review is not exhaustive, and covers research published from 2016 to 2021. This paper aims to assist fellow researchers by compiling the current methods, challenges, and future directions in this field.

This paper studies the multi-depot joint distribution vehicle routing problem considering energy consumption with time-dependent networks (MDJDVRP-TDN). Aiming at the multi-depot joint distribution vehicle routing problem where the vehicle travel time depends on the variation characteristics of the road network speed in the distribution area, considering the influence of the road network on the vehicle speed and the relationship between vehicle load and fuel consumption, a multi-depot joint distribution vehicle routing optimization model is established to minimize the sum of vehicle fixed cost, fuel consumption cost and time window penalty cost. Traditional vehicle routing problems are modeled based on symmetric graphs. In this paper, considering the influence of time-dependent networks on routes optimization, modeling is based on asymmetric graphs, which increases the complexity of the problem. A hybrid genetic algorithm with variable neighborhood search (HGAVNS) is designed to solve the model, in which the nearest neighbor insertion method and Logistic mapping equation are used to generate the initial solution firstly, and then five neighborhood structures are designed to improve the algorithm. An adaptive neighborhood search times strategy is used to balance the diversification and depth search of the population. The effectiveness of the designed algorithm is verified through several groups of numerical instances with different scales. The research can enrich the relevant theoretical research of multi-depot vehicle routing problems and provide the theoretical basis for transportation enterprises to formulate reasonable distribution schemes.

A nonlinear approach to identifying combinations of CpGs DNA methylation data, as biomarkers for Alzheimer (AD) disease, is presented in this paper. It will be shown that the presented algorithm can substantially reduce the amount of CpGs used while generating forecasts that are more accurate than using all the CpGs available. It is assumed that the process, in principle, can be non-linear, hence, a non-linear approach might be more appropriate. The proposed algorithm selects which CpGs to use as input data in a classification problem that tries to distinguish between patients suffering from AD and healthy control individuals. This type of classification problem is suitable for techniques, such as support vector machines. The algorithm was used both at a single dataset level, as well as using multiple datasets. Developing robust algorithms for multi-datasets is challenging, due to the impact that small differences in laboratory procedures have in the obtained data. The approach that was followed in the paper can be expanded to multiple datasets, allowing for a gradual more granular understanding of the underlying process. A 92% successful classification rate was obtained, using the proposed method, which is a higher value than the result obtained using all the CpGs available. This is likely due to the reduction in the dimensionality of the data obtained by the algorithm that, in turn, helps to reduce the risk of reaching a local minima.

In order to play the important role of electric vehicles to promote the realization of the 3060 double carbon target, electric vehicles have seen explosive growth. However, due to the tight symmetry between the number and distribution of electric vehicles and their corresponding charging facilities, the layout of charging facilities has higher requirements. This paper collects travel data in the form of a traffic travel questionnaire for electric vehicle users. Based on the vehicle parking demand model of the queuing theory and Monte Carlo simulation, the paper gives the number of stopping vehicles and the time of vehicles stopping in different places such as residential areas, workplaces, supermarket parking and roadside. In addition, based on the Bass prediction model, the main parameters are modeled in the model, and the price correction coefficient is introduced. The improved Bass model is used to predict the growth trend of electric vehicles in different regions in different years and in different incentive sites. By predicting the ownership of urban electric vehicles and accurately grasping the distribution and operation of electric vehicles, this paper can provide guidance and suggestions for the planning and construction of charging facilities in different regions, effectively reduce the investment cost of charging facilities and guide local governments to formulate reasonable planning schemes.

Ranking of interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy numbers (IVIFNs) is an important task for solving real-life Decision-Making problems. It is a potential area of research that has attracted the researchers working in fuzzy mathematics. Researchers worldwide are looking for a unique ranking principle that can be used to discriminate any two arbitrary IVIFNs. Various ranking functions on the set of IVIFNs have been proposed. However, every method has some drawbacks in ranking arbitrary IVIFNs due to the partial ordering. This paper introduces a new ranking principle for comparing two arbitrary IVIFNs by defining a new score function based on the non-membership value of IVIFNs. In this paper, firstly, the limitations of a few well-known and existing ranking methods for IVIFNs have been discussed. Secondly, a new non-membership score on the class of IVIFNs has been introduced. Thirdly, the superiority of the proposed score function in ranking arbitrary IVIFNs over the existing methods has been demonstrated. Finally, the proposed non-membership score function has been utilized in interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy TOPSIS (IVIF-TOPSIS) using numerical examples.

The existing multi-layer tree is of dynamic linked list type which has many limitations and is complicated due to the pointer-node structure. Static array representation gives more flexibility in programming of algorithms and operations like insertion, deletion, and search. It also reduces the storage space. This paper presents a new method for representing multi-layer forest data structure in array format. It also explains various tree operations, unique data compression algorithm and migration algorithm between traditional approach and the proposed data structure. Most of the fundamental algorithms like those from artificial intelligence that employ decision trees are based on trees/forest data structure. The current paper brings a completely new idea in the representation of these data structures without employing recursion and targeting memory optimizations with reduced code complexities. The applications of forest data structures are many and span over various interdisciplinary areas of Engineering, Medicine, Aviation, Locomotive, Marine, etc. The proposed novel approach not just introduces a new method to look at the tree data structure but also provides the flexibility to adapt to the existing methods as per the user needs. A few such applications in Simulink debugging and the Forest visualisation have been discussed in detail in this paper.

Class imbalance, as a phenomenon of asymmetry, has an adverse effect on the performance of most machine learning and overlap is another important factor that affects the classification performance of machine learning algorithms. This paper deals with the two factors simultaneously, addressing the class overlap under imbalanced distribution. In this paper, a theoretical analysis is firstly conducted on the existing class overlap metrics. Then, an improved method and the corresponding metrics to evaluate the class overlap under imbalance distributions are proposed based on the theoretical analysis. A well-known collection of the imbalanced datasets is used to compare the performance of different metrics and the performance is evaluated based on the Pearson correlation coefficient and the ξ correlation coefficient. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed class overlap metrics outperform other compared metrics for the imbalanced datasets and the Pearson correlation coefficient with the AUC metric of eight algorithms can be improved by 34.7488% in average.

In the years 1917–1919 Tullio Levi-Civita published a number of papers presenting new solutions to Einstein’s equations. This work, while partially translated, remains largely inaccessible to English speaking researchers. In this paper we review these solutions, and present them in a modern readable manner. We will also compute both Cartan–Karlhede and Carminati–Mclenaghan invariants such that these solutions are invariantly characterized by two distinct methods. These methods will allow for these solutions to be totally and invariantly characterized. Because of the variety of solutions considered here, this paper will also be a useful reference for those seeking to learn to apply the Cartan–Karlhede algorithm in practice.

Recent years have seen a growing call for use of big data analytics techniques to support the realisation of symmetries and simulations in digital twins and smart factories, in which data quality plays an important role in determining the quality of big data analytics products. Although data quality affecting big data analytics has received attention in the smart factory research field, to date a systematic review of the topic of interest for understanding the present state of the art is not available, which could help reveal the trends and gaps in this area. This paper therefore presents a systematic literature review of research articles about data quality affecting big data analytics in smart factories that have been published up to 2020. We examined 31 empirical studies from our selection of papers to identify the research themes in this field. The analysis of these studies links data quality issues toward big data analytics with data quality dimensions and methods used to address these issues in the smart factory context. The findings of this systematic review also provide implications for practitioners in addressing data quality issues to better use big data analytics products to support digital symmetry in the context of smart factory.

To beat competition and obtain valuable information, decision-makers must conduct in-depth machine learning or data mining for data analytics. Traditionally, clustering and classification are two common methods used in machine mining. For clustering, data are divided into various groups according to the similarity or common features. On the other hand, classification refers to building a model by given training data, where the target class or label is predicted for the test data. In recent years, many researchers focus on the hybrid of clustering and classification. These techniques have admirable achievements, but there is still room to ameliorate performances, such as distributed process. Therefore, we propose clustering and classification based on distributed automatic feature engineering (AFE) for customer segmentation in this paper. In the proposed algorithm, AFE uses artificial bee colony (ABC) to select valuable features of input data, and then RFM provides the basic data analytics. In AFE, it first initializes the number of cluster k. Moreover, the clustering methods of k-means, Wald method, and fuzzy c-means (FCM) are processed to cluster the examples in variant groups. Finally, the classification method of an improved fuzzy decision tree classifies the target data and generates decision rules for explaining the detail situations. AFE also determines the value of the split number in the improved fuzzy decision tree to increase classification accuracy. The proposed clustering and classification based on automatic feature engineering is distributed, performed in Apache Spark platform. The topic of this paper is about solving the problem of clustering and classification for machine learning. From the results, the corresponding classification accuracy outperforms other approaches. Moreover, we also provide useful strategies and decision rules from data analytics for decision-makers.

The difference between dual-gantry and single-gantry surface-mount placement (SMP) machines is that dual-gantry machines exhibit higher complexity and more problems due to their additional gantry robot, such as component allocation and collision. This paper presents algorithms to prescribe the assembly operations of a dual-gantry multi-head surface-mount placement machine. It considers five inter-related problems: (i) component allocation, (ii) automatic nozzle changer assignment, (iii) feeder arrangement, and (iv) pick-and-place sequence, it incorporates a practical restriction related to (v) component height. The paper proposes a solution to each problem: (i) equalizing “workloads” assigned to the gantries, (ii) using quantity ratio method, (iii) using two similarity measurement mechanisms in a modified differential evolution algorithm with a random-key encoding mapping method that addresses component height restriction, (iv) and a combination of nearest-neighbor search and 2-opt method to plan each placing operation. This study reports an experiment that involved the processing of 10 printed circuit boards and compared the performance of a modified differential evolution algorithm with well-known algorithms including differential evolution, particle swarm optimization, and genetic algorithm. The results reveal that the number of picks, moving distance of picking components, and total assembly time with the modified differential evolution algorithm are less than other algorithms.

Logistics plays an important role in the field of global economy, and the storage and retrieval of tasks in a warehouse which has symmetry is the most important part of logistics. Generally, the shelves of a warehouse have a certain degree of symmetry and similarity in their structure. The storage and retrieval efficiency directly affects the efficiency of logistics. The efficiency of the traditional storage and retrieval mode has become increasingly inconsistent with the needs of the industry. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes a greedy algorithm based on cost matrix to solve the path planning problem of the automatic storage and retrieval system (AS/RS). Firstly, aiming at the path planning mathematical model of AS/RS, this paper proposes the concept of cost matrix, which transforms the traditional storage and retrieval problem into the element combination problem of cost matrix. Then, a more efficient backtracking algorithm is proposed based on the exhaustive method. After analyzing the performance of the backtracking algorithm, combined with some rules, a greedy algorithm which can further improve efficiency is proposed; the convergence of the improved greedy algorithm is also proven. Finally, through simulation, the time consumption of the greedy algorithm is only 0.59% of the exhaustive method, and compared with the traditional genetic algorithm, the time consumption of the greedy algorithm is about 50% of the genetic algorithm, and it can still maintain its advantage in time consumption, which proves that the greedy algorithm based on cost matrix has a certain feasibility and practicability in solving the path planning of the automatic storage and retrieval system.

The plastic modifications in synaptic connectivity is primarily from changes triggered by neuromodulated dopamine signals. These activities are controlled by neuromodulation, which is itself under the control of the brain. The subjective brain’s self-modifying abilities play an essential role in learning and adaptation. The artificial neural networks with neuromodulated plasticity are used to implement transfer learning in the image classification domain. In particular, this has application in image detection, image segmentation, and transfer of learning parameters with significant results. This paper proposes a novel approach to enhance transfer learning accuracy in a heterogeneous source and target, using the neuromodulation of the Hebbian learning principle, called NDHTL (Neuromodulated Dopamine Hebbian Transfer Learning). Neuromodulation of plasticity offers a powerful new technique with applications in training neural networks implementing asymmetric backpropagation using Hebbian principles in transfer learning motivated CNNs (Convolutional neural networks). Biologically motivated concomitant learning, where connected brain cells activate positively, enhances the synaptic connection strength between the network neurons. Using the NDHTL algorithm, the percentage of change of the plasticity between the neurons of the CNN layer is directly managed by the dopamine signal’s value. The discriminative nature of transfer learning fits well with the technique. The learned model’s connection weights must adapt to unseen target datasets with the least cost and effort in transfer learning. Using distinctive learning principles such as dopamine Hebbian learning in transfer learning for asymmetric gradient weights update is a novel approach. The paper emphasizes the NDHTL algorithmic technique as synaptic plasticity controlled by dopamine signals in transfer learning to classify images using source-target datasets. The standard transfer learning using gradient backpropagation is a symmetric framework. Experimental results using CIFAR-10 and CIFAR-100 datasets show that the proposed NDHTL algorithm can enhance transfer learning efficiency compared to existing methods.

The paper presents a new mathematical model of TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) link functioning in a heterogeneous (wired/wireless) channel. It represents a controllable, partially observable stochastic dynamic system. The system state describes the status of the modeled TCP link and expresses it via an unobservable controllable MJP (Markov jump process) with finite-state space. Observations are formed by low-frequency counting processes of packet losses and timeouts and a high-frequency compound Poisson process of packet acknowledgments. The information transmission through the TCP-equipped channel is considered a stochastic control problem with incomplete information. The main idea to solve it is to impose the separation principle on the problem. The paper proposes a mathematical framework and algorithmic support to implement the solution. It includes a solution to the stochastic control problem with complete information, a diffusion approximation of the high-frequency observations, a solution to the MJP state filtering problem given the observations with multiplicative noises, and a numerical scheme of the filtering algorithm. The paper also contains the results of a comparative study of the proposed state-based congestion control algorithm with the contemporary TCP versions: Illinois, CUBIC, Compound, and BBR (Bottleneck Bandwidth and RTT).

The present paper deals with a class of second-order PDE constrained controlled optimization problems with application in Lagrange–Hamilton dynamics. Concretely, we formulate and prove necessary conditions of optimality for the considered class of control problems driven by multiple integral cost functionals involving second-order partial derivatives. Moreover, an illustrative example is provided to highlight the effectiveness of the results derived in the paper. In the final part of the paper, we present an algorithm to summarize the steps for solving a control problem such as the one investigated here.

This Special Issue covers symmetric and asymmetric data that occur in real-life problems. We invited authors to submit their theoretical or experimental research to present engineering and economic problem solution models that deal with symmetry or asymmetry of different data types. The Special Issue gained interest in the research community and received many submissions. After rigorous scientific evaluation by editors and reviewers, seventeen papers were accepted and published. The authors proposed different solution models, mainly covering uncertain data in multi-criteria decision-making problems as complex tools to balance the symmetry between goals, risks, and constraints to cope with the complicated problems in engineering or management. Therefore, we invite researchers interested in the topics to read the papers provided in the Special Issue.

In tokamak nuclear fusion reactors, one of the main issues is to know the total emission of radiation, which is mandatory to understand the plasma physics and is very useful to monitor and control the plasma evolution. This radiation can be measured by means of a bolometer system that consists in a certain number of elements sensitive to the integral of the radiation along straight lines crossing the plasma. By placing the sensors in such a way to have families of crossing lines, sophisticated tomographic inversion algorithms allow to reconstruct the radiation tomography in the 2D poloidal cross-section of the plasma. In tokamaks, the number of projection cameras is often quite limited resulting in an inversion mathematic problem very ill conditioned so that, usually, it is solved by means of a grid-based, iterative constrained optimization procedure, whose convergence time is not suitable for the real time requirements. In this paper, to illustrate the method, an assumption not valid in general is made on the correlation among the grid elements, based on the statistical distribution of the radiation emissivity over a set of tomographic reconstructions, performed off-line. Then, a regularization procedure is carried out, which merge highly correlated grid elements providing a squared coefficients matrix with an enough low condition number. This matrix, which is inverted offline once for all, can be multiplied by the actual bolometer measures returning the tomographic reconstruction, with calculations suitable for real time application. The proposed algorithm is applied, in this paper, to a synthetic case study.

This paper focuses on preventing forms of social dysfunction such as invasions of privacy and stalking by understanding the diversified situation of the rapidly increasing number of social media users who use social media services, which are various types of social networking services. To prevent these problems, we aim to identify mutual relationships by layering the relationships between social media users. In other words, in social media that has a relationship with the subject, the subject user is yet another object, so the appearance of the object viewed by the subject user and the correlation between the subjects and objects must be visualized. At this time, because the subject is an object that has changed over time, it is necessary to perform symmetrical and mutual correlation analysis based on relationship through objective layering viewed from a computer. In this paper, the mutual relationship between the subject user and the object user was defined and visualized to apply it to the deep learning model through a software program. Among various types of social media that are mainly used, user information data is gathered through the popular social media site called Instagram and our target community platforms. Consequently, it was processed again to represent user interactions among other users. Finally, three stages of mutual relationship visualization were represented through simulation and tests, and 120,000 data sets were processed, classified, and proved through the simulation results.

In the present paper, a wavelet method is proposed to study the impact of electronic media on economic situation. More precisely, wavelet techniques are applied versus classical methods to analyze economic indices in the market. The technique consists firstly of filtering the data from unprecise circumstances (noise) to construct next a wavelet denoised contingency table. Next, a thresholding procedure is applied to such a table to extract the essential information porters. The resulting table subject finally to correspondence analysis before and after thresholding. As a case of study, the KSA 2030-vision is considered in the empirical part based on electronic and social media. Effects of the electronic media texts about the trading 2030 vision on the Saudi and global economy has been studied. Recall that the Saudi market is the most important representative market in the GCC continent. It has both regional and worldwide influence on economies and besides, it is characterized by many political, economic and financial movements such as the worldwide economic NEOM project. The findings provided in the present paper may be applied to predict the future situation of markets in GCC region and may constitute therefore a guide for investors to decide about investing or not in these markets.

The paper aims to study a concrete structure, currently used in civil engineering, which has certain symmetries. This type of problem is common in engineering practice, especially in civil engineering. There are many reasons why structures with identical elements or certain symmetries are used in industry, related to economic considerations, shortening the design time, for constructive, simplicity, cost or logistical reasons. There are many reasons why the presence of symmetries has benefits for designers, builders, and beneficiaries. In the end, the result of these benefits materializes through short execution times and reduced costs. The paper studies the eigenvalue and eigenmode properties of vibration for components of the constructions’ structure, often encountered in current practice. The identification of such properties allows the simplification and easing of the effort necessary for the dynamic analysis of such a structure.

The aim of this paper is to provide a suitable definition for the concept of fuzzy inner product space. In order to achieve this, we firstly focused on various approaches from the already-existent literature. Due to the emergence of various studies on fuzzy inner product spaces, it is necessary to make a comprehensive overview of the published papers on the aforementioned subject in order to facilitate subsequent research. Then we considered another approach to the notion of fuzzy inner product starting from P. Majundar and S.K. Samanta’s definition. In fact, we changed their definition and we proved some new properties of the fuzzy inner product function. We also proved that this fuzzy inner product generates a fuzzy norm of the type Nădăban-Dzitac. Finally, some challenges are given.

The dataset distribution of actual logging is asymmetric, as most logging data are unlabeled. With the traditional classification model, it is hard to predict the oil and gas reservoir accurately. Therefore, a novel approach to the oil layer recognition model using the improved whale swarm algorithm (WOA) and semi-supervised support vector machine (S3VM) is proposed in this paper. At first, in order to overcome the shortcomings of the Whale Optimization Algorithm applied in the parameter-optimization of the S3VM model, such as falling into a local optimization and low convergence precision, an improved WOA was proposed according to the adaptive cloud strategy and the catfish effect. Then, the improved WOA was used to optimize the kernel parameters of S3VM for oil layer recognition. In this paper, the improved WOA is used to test 15 benchmark functions of CEC2005 compared with five other algorithms. The IWOA–S3VM model is used to classify the five kinds of UCI datasets compared with the other two algorithms. Finally, the IWOA–S3VM model is used for oil layer recognition. The result shows that (1) the improved WOA has better convergence speed and optimization ability than the other five algorithms, and (2) the IWOA–S3VM model has better recognition precision when the dataset contains a labeled and unlabeled dataset in oil layer recognition.

Software reliability models (SRMs) are widely used for quantitative evaluation of software reliability by estimating model parameters from failure data observed in the testing phase. In particular, non-homogeneous Poisson process (NHPP)-based SRMs are the most popular because of their mathematical tractability. In this paper, we focus on the parameter estimation algorithm for NHPP-based SRMs and discuss the EM algorithm for generalized fault count data. The presented algorithm can be applied for failure time data, failure count data, and their mixture. The paper derives the EM-step formulas for basic 12 NHPP-based SRMs and demonstrate a numerical experiment to present the convergence property of our algorithms. The developed algorithms are suitable for an automatic tool for software reliability evaluation.

This paper analyzes cost sharing in uncapacitated lot-sizing models with backlogging and heterogeneous costs. It is assumed that several firms participate in a consortium aiming at satisfying their demand over the planning horizon with minimal operating cost. Each individual firm has its own ordering channel and holding technology, but cooperation with other firms consists in sharing that information. Therefore, the firms that cooperate can use the best ordering channels and holding technology among members of the consortium. This mode of cooperation is stable. in that allocations of the overall operating cost exist, so that no group of agents benefit from leaving the consortium. Our contribution in the current paper is to present a new family of cost sharing allocations with good properties for enforcing cooperation: the unitary Owen points. Necessary and sufficient conditions are provided for the unitary Owen points to belong to the core of the cooperative game. In addition, we provide empirical evidence, through simulation, showing that, in randomly-generated situations, the above condition is fulfilled in 99% of the cases. Additionally, a relationship between lot-sizing games and a certain family of production-inventory games, through Owen’s points of the latter, is described. This interesting relationship enables easily constructing a variety of coalitionally stable allocations for cooperative lot-sizing models. Cloud based healthcare computing have changed the face of healthcare in many ways. The main advantages of cloud computing in healthcare are scalability of the required service and the provision to upscale or downsize the data storge, collaborating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning. The current paper examined various research studies to explore the utilization of intelligent techniques in health systems and mainly focused into the security and privacy issues in the current technologies. Despite the various benefits related to cloud-computing applications for healthcare, there are different types of management, technology handling, security measures, and legal issues to be considered and addressed. The key focus of this paper is to address the increased demand for cloud computing and its definition, technologies widely used in healthcare, their problems and possibilities, and the way protection mechanisms are organized and prepared when the company chooses to implement the latest evolving service model. In this paper, we focused on a thorough review of current and existing literature on different approaches and mechanisms used in e-Health to deal with security and privacy issues. Some of these approaches have strengths and weaknesses. After selecting original articles, the literature review was carried out, and we identified several models adopted in their solutions. We arrived at the reviewed articles after comparing the models used.

Exploration and exploitation are the two main concepts of success for searching algorithms. Controlling exploration and exploitation while executing the search algorithm will enhance the overall performance of the searching algorithm. Exploration and exploitation are usually controlled offline by proper settings of parameters that affect the population-based algorithm performance. In this paper, we proposed a dynamic controller for one of the most well-known search algorithms, which is the Genetic Algorithm (GA). Population Diversity Controller-GA (PDC-GA) is proposed as a novel feature-selection algorithm to reduce the search space while building a machine-learning classifier. The PDC-GA is proposed by combining GA with k-mean clustering to control population diversity through the exploration process. An injection method is proposed to redistribute the population once 90% of the solutions are located in one cluster. A real case study of a bankruptcy problem obtained from UCI Machine Learning Repository is used in this paper as a binary classification problem. The obtained results show the ability of the proposed approach to enhance the performance of the machine learning classifiers in the range of 1% to 4%.

This paper presents a novel approach for an Intrusion Detection System (IDS) based on one kind of asymmetric optimization which use any three already well-known IDS algorithms and Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) algorithm together. Namely, a variable threshold which indicates an attack on an observed and protected network is determined by using all three values obtained with three known IDS algorithms i.e., on previously recorded data by making a decision by majority. For these algorithms authors used algorithm of k-nearest neighbors, cumulative sum algorithm, and algorithm of exponentially weighted moving average. Using a proposed method we can get a threshold that is more precisely determined than in the case of any method individual. Practically, using TMR we obtain a dynamically threshold adjustment of IDS software, which reduces the existence of false alarms and undetected attacks, so the efficiency of such IDS software is notably higher and can get better results. Today, Denial of Service attacks (DoS) are one of the most present type of attacks and the reason for the special attention paid to them in this paper. In addition, the authors of the proposed method for IDS software used a known CIC-DDoS2019 dataset, which contains various data recordings of such attacks. Obtained results with the proposed solution showed better characteristics than each individual used algorithm in this solution. IDS software with the proposed method worked precisely and timely, which means alarms were triggered properly and efficiently.

Tracking scientific and technological (S&amp, T) research hotspots can help scholars to grasp the status of current research and develop regular patterns in the field over time. It contributes to the generation of new ideas and plays an important role in promoting the writing of scientific research projects and scientific papers. Patents are important S&amp, T resources, which can reflect the development status of the field. In this paper, we use topic modeling, topic intensity, and evolutionary computing models to discover research hotspots and development trends in the field of blockchain patents. First, we propose a time-based dynamic latent Dirichlet allocation (TDLDA) modeling method based on a probabilistic graph model and knowledge representation learning for patent text mining. Second, we present a computational model, topic intensity (TI), that expresses the topic strength and evolution. Finally, the point-wise mutual information (PMI) value is used to evaluate topic quality. We obtain 20 hot topics through TDLDA experiments and rank them according to the strength calculation model. The topic evolution model is used to analyze the topic evolution trend from the perspectives of rising, falling, and stable. From the experiments we found that 8 topics showed an upward trend, 6 topics showed a downward trend, and 6 topics became stable or fluctuated. Compared with the baseline method, TDLDA can have the best effect when K is 40 or less. TDLDA is an effective topic model that can extract hot topics and evolution trends of blockchain patent texts, which helps researchers to more accurately grasp the research direction and improves the quality of project application and paper writing in the blockchain technology domain.

This paper presents research focusing on visualization and pattern recognition based on computer science. Although deep neural networks demonstrate satisfactory performance regarding image and voice recognition, as well as pattern analysis and intrusion detection, they exhibit inferior performance towards adversarial examples. Noise introduction, to some degree, to the original data could lead adversarial examples to be misclassified by deep neural networks, even though they can still be deemed as normal by humans. In this paper, a robust diversity adversarial training method against adversarial attacks was demonstrated. In this approach, the target model is more robust to unknown adversarial examples, as it trains various adversarial samples. During the experiment, Tensorflow was employed as our deep learning framework, while MNIST and Fashion-MNIST were used as experimental datasets. Results revealed that the diversity training method has lowered the attack success rate by an average of 27.2 and 24.3% for various adversarial examples, while maintaining the 98.7 and 91.5% accuracy rates regarding the original data of MNIST and Fashion-MNIST.

The harmony search (HS) algorithm is an evolutionary computation technique, which was inspired by music improvisation. So far, it has been applied to various scientific and engineering optimization problems including project scheduling, structural design, energy system operation, car lane detection, ecological conservation, model parameter calibration, portfolio management, banking fraud detection, law enforcement, disease spread modeling, cancer detection, astronomical observation, music composition, fine art appreciation, and sudoku puzzle solving. While there are many application-oriented papers, only few papers exist on how HS performs for finding optimal solutions. Thus, this preliminary study proposes a new approach to show how HS converges on an optimal solution under specific conditions. Here, we introduce a distance concept and prove the convergence based on the empirical probability. Moreover, a numerical example is provided to easily explain the theorem.

As one of the common methods to construct classifiers, naïve Bayes has become one of the most popular classification methods because of its solid theoretical basis, strong prior knowledge learning characteristics, unique knowledge expression forms, and high classification accuracy. This classification method has a symmetry phenomenon in the process of data classification. Although the naïve Bayes classifier has high classification performance in single-label classification problems, it is worth studying whether the multilabel classification problem is still valid. In this paper, with the naïve Bayes classifier as the basic research object, in view of the naïve Bayes classification algorithm’s shortage of conditional independence assumptions and label class selection strategies, the characteristics of weighted naïve Bayes is given a better label classifier algorithm framework, the introduction of cultural algorithms to search for and determine the optimal weights is proposed as the weighted naïve Bayes multilabel classification algorithm. Experimental results show that the algorithm proposed in this paper is superior to other algorithms in classification performance.

Automated brain tumor segmentation based on 3D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is critical to disease diagnosis. Moreover, robust and accurate achieving automatic extraction of brain tumor is a big challenge because of the inherent heterogeneity of the tumor structure. In this paper, we present an efficient semantic segmentation 3D recurrent multi-fiber network (RMFNet), which is based on encoder–decoder architecture to segment the brain tumor accurately. 3D RMFNet is applied in our paper to solve the problem of brain tumor segmentation, including a 3D recurrent unit and 3D multi-fiber unit. First of all, we propose that recurrent units segment brain tumors by connecting recurrent units and convolutional layers. This quality enhances the model’s ability to integrate contextual information and is of great significance to enhance the contextual information. Then, a 3D multi-fiber unit is added to the overall network to solve the high computational cost caused by the use of a 3D network architecture to capture local features. 3D RMFNet combines both advantages from a 3D recurrent unit and 3D multi-fiber unit. Extensive experiments on the Brain Tumor Segmentation (BraTS) 2018 challenge dataset show that our RMFNet remarkably outperforms state-of-the-art methods, and achieves average Dice scores of 89.62%, 83.65% and 78.72% for the whole tumor, tumor core and enhancing tumor, respectively. The experimental results prove our architecture to be an efficient tool for brain tumor segmentation accurately.

Apart from the effects of treating those infected with COVID-19, the pandemic has also affected treatment for other diseases, which has been either interrupted or canceled. The aim of this paper is to provide a financial model for obtaining the cost overrun resulting from the worsening of illnesses and deaths for each of the causes considered. To achieve this, first deaths have been classified into causes of death and for each of these causes, an estimation has been made of the worsening condition of patients due to delay in treatment. Through these data, a fuzzy relation between deaths and the worsening condition of patients can be obtained. Next, the expertise process has been used to estimate cost overrun in relation to patients’ pathologies. The experts’ opinions have been aggregated using ordered weighted average (OWA). Lastly, using fuzzy logic again, a correction coefficient has been determined, which optimizes the future implementation of the proposed model without the need for a new estimation of inputs. The paper concludes with a numerical example for a better comprehension of the proposed theoretical model. Ultimately, it provides the scientific community in general and in particular managers of public administration entities with a novel tool for improving the efficiency of the healthcare system.

The paper proposes composite materials for the manufacturing of parts of the car body structure, namely a door. This work aims to analyze the possibility of replacing the metal door of a vehicle with a door made of composite materials. Specific issues related to this replacement are analyzed in the paper. Test specimens were made of composite materials of different sizes, using several types of constituents to determine which material might be most suitable to replace metal in the manufacturing of the door. The choice of materials for the car door was made starting from the characteristics of the analyzed composite materials, but also taking into account the manufacturing possibilities and other engineering limitations. The behavior of the automotive structure as analyzed, using the finite element method for determining the stresses in the structure. Experimental verifications were performed on an experimental stand which has been specially designed for this purpose, to validate the proposed model.

Autonomous (unmanned) combat systems will become an integral part of modern defense systems. However, limited operational capabilities, the need for coordination, and dynamic battlefield environments with the requirement of timeless in decision-making are peculiar difficulties to be solved in order to realize intelligent systems control. In this paper, we explore the application of Learning Classifier System and Artificial Immune models for coordinated self-learning air defense systems. In particular, this paper presents a scheme that implements an autonomous cooperative threat evaluation and weapon assignment learning approach. Taking into account uncertainties in a successful interception, target characteristics, weapon type and characteristics, closed-loop coordinated behaviors, we adopt a hierarchical multi-agent approach to coordinate multiple combat platforms to achieve optimal performance. Based on the combined strengths of learning classifier system and artificial immune-based algorithms, the proposed scheme consists of two categories of agents; a strategy generation agent inspired by learning classifier system, and strategy coordination inspired by Artificial Immune System mechanisms. An experiment in a realistic environment shows that the adopted hybrid approach can be used to learn weapon-target assignment for multiple unmanned combat systems to successfully defend against coordinated attacks. The presented results show the potential for hybrid approaches for an intelligent system enabling adaptable and collaborative systems.
