The present study is an evaluation of published papers on machine learning as employed in mastitis research. The aim of this study was the quantitative evaluation of the scientific content and the bibliometric details of these papers. In total, 69 papers were found to combine machine learning in mastitis research and were considered in detail. There was a progressive yearly increase in published papers, which originated from 23 countries (mostly from China or the United States of America). Most original articles (n = 59) referred to work involving cattle, relevant to mastitis in individual animals. Most articles described work related to the development and diagnosis of the infection. Fewer articles described work on the antibiotic resistance of pathogens isolated from cases of mastitis and on the treatment of the infection. In most studies (98.5% of published papers), supervised machine learning models were employed. Most frequently, decision trees and support vector machines were employed in the studies described. ‘Machine learning’ and ‘mastitis’ were the most frequently used keywords. The papers were published in 39 journals, with most frequent publications in Computers and Electronics in Agriculture and Journal of Dairy Science. The median number of cited references in the papers was 39 (interquartile range: 31). There were 435 co-authors in the papers (mean: 6.2 per paper, median: 5, min.–max.: 1–93) and 356 individual authors. The median number of citations received by the papers was 4 (min.–max.: 0–70). Most papers (72.5%) were published in open-access mode. This study summarized the characteristics of papers on mastitis and artificial intelligence. Future studies could explore using these methodologies at farm level, and extending them to other animal species, while unsupervised learning techniques might also prove to be useful.

Efficient triaging and referral assessments are critical in ensuring prompt medical intervention in the community healthcare (CHC) system. However, the existing triaging systems in many community health services are an intensive, time-consuming process and often lack accuracy, particularly for various symptoms which might represent heart failure or other health-threatening conditions. There is a noticeable limit of research papers describing AI technologies for triaging patients. This paper proposes a novel quantitative data-driven approach using machine learning (ML) modelling to improve the community clinical triaging process. Furthermore, this study aims to employ the feature selection process and machine learning power to reduce the triaging process’s waiting time and increase accuracy in clinical decision making. The model was trained on medical records from a dataset of patients with “Heart Failure”, which included demographics, past medical history, vital signs, medications, and clinical symptoms. A comparative study was conducted using a variety of machine learning algorithms, where XGBoost demonstrated the best performance among the other ML models. The triage levels of 2,35,982 patients achieved an accuracy of 99.94%, a precision of 0.9986, a recall of 0.9958, and an F1-score of 0.9972. The proposed diagnostic model can be implemented for the CHC decision system and be developed further for other medical conditions.

Generative adversarial networks (GANs) have become a recent and rapidly developing research topic in machine learning. Since their inception in 2014, a significant number of variants have been proposed to address various topics across many fields, and they have particularly excelled not only in image and language processing but also in the medical and data science domains. In this paper, we aim to highlight the significance of and advancements that these GAN models can introduce in the field of Business Economics, where they have yet to be fully developed. To this end, a review of the literature of GANs is presented in general together with a more specific review in the field of Business Economics, for which only a few papers can be found. Furthermore, the most relevant papers are analysed in order to provide approaches for the opportunity to research GANs in the field of Business Economics.

Rapid urbanization and climate change exacerbate the urban heat island effect, increasing the vulnerability of urban residents to extreme heat. Although many studies have assessed urban heat vulnerability, there is a significant lack of standardized criteria and references for selecting indicators, building models, and validating those models. Many existing approaches do not adequately meet urban planning needs due to insufficient spatial resolution, temporal coverage, and accuracy. To address this gap, this paper introduces the U-HEAT framework, a conceptual model for analyzing urban heat vulnerability. The primary objective is to outline the theoretical foundations and potential applications of U-HEAT, emphasizing its conceptual nature. This framework integrates machine learning (ML) with remote sensing (RS) to identify urban heat vulnerability at both long-term and detailed levels. It combines retrospective and forward-looking mapping for continuous monitoring and assessment, providing essential data for developing comprehensive strategies. With its active learning capacity, U-HEAT enables model refinement and the evaluation of policy impacts. The framework presented in this paper offers a standardized and sustainable approach, aiming to enhance practical analysis tools. It highlights the importance of interdisciplinary research in bolstering urban resilience and stresses the need for sustainable urban ecosystems capable of addressing the complex challenges posed by climate change and increased urban heat. This study provides valuable insights for researchers, urban administrators, and planners to effectively combat urban heat challenges.

Protein structure prediction is important for understanding their function and behavior. This review study presents a comprehensive review of the computational models used in predicting protein structure. It covers the progression from established protein modeling to state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) frameworks. The paper will start with a brief introduction to protein structures, protein modeling, and AI. The section on established protein modeling will discuss homology modeling, ab initio modeling, and threading. The next section is deep learning-based models. It introduces some state-of-the-art AI models, such as AlphaFold (AlphaFold, AlphaFold2, AlphaFold3), RoseTTAFold, ProteinBERT, etc. This section also discusses how AI techniques have been integrated into established frameworks like Swiss-Model, Rosetta, and I-TASSER. The model performance is compared using the rankings of CASP14 (Critical Assessment of Structure Prediction) and CASP15. CASP16 is ongoing, and its results are not included in this review. Continuous Automated Model EvaluatiOn (CAMEO) complements the biennial CASP experiment. Template modeling score (TM-score), global distance test total score (GDT_TS), and Local Distance Difference Test (lDDT) score are discussed too. This paper then acknowledges the ongoing difficulties in predicting protein structure and emphasizes the necessity of additional searches like dynamic protein behavior, conformational changes, and protein–protein interactions. In the application section, this paper introduces some applications in various fields like drug design, industry, education, and novel protein development. In summary, this paper provides a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements in established protein modeling and deep learning-based models for protein structure predictions. It emphasizes the significant advancements achieved by AI and identifies potential areas for further investigation.

Climbing gyms aim to continuously improve their offerings and make the best use of their infrastructure to provide a unique experience for their clients, the climbers. One approach to achieve this goal is to track and analyze climbing sessions from the beginning of the ascent until the climber’s descent. Detecting the climber’s descent is crucial because it indicates when the ascent has ended. This paper discusses an approach that preserves climber privacy (e.g., not using cameras) while considering the convenience of climbers and the costs to the gyms. To this aim, a hardware prototype has been developed to collect data using accelerometer sensors attached to a piece of climbing equipment mounted on the wall, called a quickdraw, which connects the climbing rope to the bolt anchors. The sensors are configured to be energy-efficient, making them practical in terms of expenses and time required for replacement when used in large quantities in a climbing gym. This paper describes the hardware specifications, studies data measured by the sensors in ultra-low power mode, detects sensors’ orientation patterns during descent on different routes, and develops a supervised approach to identify lowering. Additionally, the study emphasizes the benefits of multidisciplinary feature engineering, combining domain-specific knowledge with machine learning to enhance performance and simplify implementation.

The concept of a digital twin is intriguing as it presents an innovative approach to solving numerous real-world challenges. Initially emerging from the domains of manufacturing and engineering, digital twin research has transcended its origins and now finds applications across a wide range of disciplines. This multidisciplinary expansion has impressively demonstrated the potential of digital twin research. While the simulation aspect of a digital twin is often emphasized, the role of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) is severely understudied. For this reason, in this paper, we highlight the pivotal role of AI and ML for digital twin research. By recognizing that a digital twin is a component of a broader Digital Twin System (DTS), we can fully grasp the diverse applications of AI and ML. In this paper, we explore six AI techniques—(1) optimization (model creation), (2) optimization (model updating), (3) generative modeling, (4) data analytics, (5) predictive analytics and (6) decision making—and their potential to advance applications in health, climate science, and sustainability.

The integration of machine learning (ML) techniques into marketing strategies has become increasingly relevant in modern business. Utilizing scientific manuscripts indexed in the Scopus database, this article explores how this integration is being carried out. Initially, a focused search is undertaken for academic articles containing both the terms “machine learning” and “marketing” in their titles, which yields a pool of papers. These papers have been processed using the Supabase platform. The process has included steps like text refinement and feature extraction. In addition, our study uses two key ML methodologies: topic modeling through NMF and a comparative analysis utilizing the k-means clustering algorithm. Through this analysis, three distinct clusters emerged, thus clarifying how ML techniques are influencing marketing strategies, from enhancing customer segmentation practices to optimizing the effectiveness of advertising campaigns.

Machine learning (ML) has been applied to predict the efficacy of biologic agents in ulcerative colitis (UC). ML can offer precision, personalization, efficiency, and automation. Moreover, it can improve decision support in predicting clinical outcomes. However, it faces challenges related to data quality and quantity, overfitting, generalization, and interpretability. This paper comments on two recent ML models that predict the efficacy of vedolizumab and ustekinumab in UC. Models that consider multiple pathways, multiple ethnicities, and combinations of real-world and clinical trial data are required for optimal shared decision-making and precision medicine. This paper also highlights the potential of combining ML with computational models to enhance clinical outcomes and personalized healthcare. Key Insights: (1) ML offers precision, personalization, efficiency, and decision support for predicting the efficacy of biologic agents in UC. (2) Challenging aspects in ML prediction include data quality, overfitting, and interpretability. (3) Multiple pathways, multiple ethnicities, and combinations of real-world and clinical trial data should be considered in predictive models for optimal decision-making. (4) Combining ML with computational models may improve clinical outcomes and personalized healthcare.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of premature death and disability globally, leading to significant increases in healthcare costs and economic strains. Artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as a crucial technology in this context, promising to have a significant impact on the management of CVDs. A wide range of methods can be used to develop effective models for medical applications, encompassing everything from predicting and diagnosing diseases to determining the most suitable treatment for individual patients. This literature review synthesizes findings from multiple studies that apply AI technologies such as machine learning algorithms and neural networks to electrocardiograms, echocardiography, coronary angiography, computed tomography, and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. A narrative review of 127 articles identified 31 papers that were directly relevant to the research, encompassing a broad spectrum of AI applications in cardiology. These applications included AI models for ECG, echocardiography, coronary angiography, computed tomography, and cardiac MRI aimed at diagnosing various cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, arrhythmias, pulmonary embolism, and valvulopathies. The papers also explored new methods for cardiovascular risk assessment, automated measurements, and optimizing treatment strategies, demonstrating the benefits of AI technologies in cardiology. In conclusion, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in cardiology promises substantial advancements in diagnosing and treating cardiovascular diseases.

The methods of artificial intelligence (AI) have been used in the planning and operation of electric power systems for more than 40 years. In recent years, due to the development of microprocessor and data storage technologies, the effectiveness of this use has greatly increased. This paper provides a systematic overview of the application of AI, including the use of machine learning (ML) in the electric power system. The potential application areas are divided into four blocks and the classification matrix has been used for clustering the AI application tasks. Furthermore, the data acquisition methods for setting the parameters of AI and ML algorithms are presented and discussed in a systematic way, considering the supervised and unsupervised learning methods. Based on this, three complex application examples, being wind power generation forecasting, smart grid security assessment (using two methods), and automatic system fault detection are presented and discussed in detail. A summary and outlook conclude the paper.

Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) can radically change almost every aspect of the human experience. In the medical field, there are numerous applications of AI and subsequently, in a relatively short time, significant progress has been made. Cardiology is not immune to this trend, this fact being supported by the exponential increase in the number of publications in which the algorithms play an important role in data analysis, pattern discovery, identification of anomalies, and therapeutic decision making. Furthermore, with technological development, there have appeared new models of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DP) that are capable of exploring various applications of AI in cardiology, including areas such as prevention, cardiovascular imaging, electrophysiology, interventional cardiology, and many others. In this sense, the present article aims to provide a general vision of the current state of AI use in cardiology. Results: We identified and included a subset of 200 papers directly relevant to the current research covering a wide range of applications. Thus, this paper presents AI applications in cardiovascular imaging, arithmology, clinical or emergency cardiology, cardiovascular prevention, and interventional procedures in a summarized manner. Recent studies from the highly scientific literature demonstrate the feasibility and advantages of using AI in different branches of cardiology. Conclusions: The integration of AI in cardiology offers promising perspectives for increasing accuracy by decreasing the error rate and increasing efficiency in cardiovascular practice. From predicting the risk of sudden death or the ability to respond to cardiac resynchronization therapy to the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism or the early detection of valvular diseases, AI algorithms have shown their potential to mitigate human error and provide feasible solutions. At the same time, limits imposed by the small samples studied are highlighted alongside the challenges presented by ethical implementation; these relate to legal implications regarding responsibility and decision making processes, ensuring patient confidentiality and data security. All these constitute future research directions that will allow the integration of AI in the progress of cardiology.

In today’s world, a significant amount of global energy is used in buildings. Unfortunately, a lot of this energy is wasted, because electrical appliances are not used properly or efficiently. One way to reduce this waste is by detecting, learning, and predicting when people are present in buildings. To do this, buildings need to become “smart” and “cognitive” and use modern technologies to sense when and how people are occupying the buildings. By leveraging this information, buildings can make smart decisions based on recently developed methods. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in Internet of Things (IoT) technologies that have been designed and used for the monitoring of indoor environmental conditions within buildings. Using these technologies is crucial to gathering data about the indoor environment and determining the number and presence of occupants. Furthermore, this paper critically examines both the strengths and limitations of each technology in predicting occupant behavior. In addition, it explores different methods for processing these data and making future occupancy predictions. Moreover, we highlight some challenges, such as determining the optimal number and location of sensors and radars, and provide a detailed explanation and insights into these challenges. Furthermore, the paper explores possible future directions, including the security of occupants’ data and the promotion of energy-efficient practices such as localizing occupants and monitoring their activities within a building. With respect to other survey works on similar topics, our work aims to both cover recent sensory approaches and review methods used in the literature for estimating occupancy.

Herein, we examined the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) as new fronts in addressing some of the pertinent challenges posed by food integrity to human and animal health. In recent times, AI and ML, along with other Industry 4.0 technologies such as big data, blockchain, virtual reality, and the internet of things (IoT), have found profound applications within nearly all dimensions of the food industry with a key focus on enhancing food safety and quality and improving the resilience of the food supply chain. This paper provides an accessible scrutiny of these technologies (in particular, AI and ML) in relation to food integrity and gives a summary of their current advancements and applications within the field. Key areas of emphasis include the application of AI and ML in quality control and inspection, food fraud detection, process control, risk assessments, prediction, and management, and supply chain traceability, amongst other critical issues addressed. Based on the literature reviewed herein, the utilization of AI and ML in the food industry has unequivocally led to improved standards of food integrity and consequently enhanced public health and consumer trust, as well as boosting the resilience of the food supply chain. While these applications demonstrate significant promise, the paper also acknowledges some of the challenges associated with the domain-specific implementation of AI in the field of food integrity. The paper further examines the prospects and orientations, underscoring the significance of overcoming the obstacles in order to fully harness the capabilities of AI and ML in safeguarding the integrity of the food system.

This paper focuses on the use of local Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) methods, particularly the Local Rule-Based Explanations (LORE) technique, within healthcare and medical settings. It emphasizes the critical role of interpretability and transparency in AI systems for diagnosing diseases, predicting patient outcomes, and creating personalized treatment plans. While acknowledging the complexities and inherent trade-offs between interpretability and model performance, our work underscores the significance of local XAI methods in enhancing decision-making processes in healthcare. By providing granular, case-specific insights, local XAI methods like LORE enhance physicians’ and patients’ understanding of machine learning models and their outcome. Our paper reviews significant contributions to local XAI in healthcare, highlighting its potential to improve clinical decision making, ensure fairness, and comply with regulatory standards.

Artificial intelligence and machine learning, in particular, have made rapid advances in image processing. However, their incorporation into architectural design is still in its early stages compared to other disciplines. Therefore, this paper addresses the development of an integrated bottom–up digital design approach and describes a research framework for incorporating the deep convolutional generative adversarial network (GAN) for early stage design exploration and the generation of intricate and complex alternative facade designs for urban interiors. In this paper, a novel facade design is proposed using the architectural style, size, scale, and openings of two adjacent buildings as references to create a new building design in the same neighborhood for urban infill. This newly created building contains the outline, style and shape of the two main buildings. A 2D building design is generated as an image, where (1) neighboring buildings are imported as a reference using the cell phone and (2) iFACADE decodes their spatial neighborhood. It is illustrated that iFACADE will be useful for designers in the early design phase to create new facades in relation to existing buildings in a short time, saving time and energy. Moreover, building owners can use iFACADE to show their preferred architectural facade to their architects by mixing two building styles and creating a new building. Therefore, it is presented that iFACADE can become a communication platform in the early design phases between architects and builders. The initial results define a heuristic function for generating abstract facade elements and sufficiently illustrate the desired functionality of the prototype we developed.

Micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) technology-based sensors have found diverse fields of application due to the advancement in semiconductor manufacturing technology, which produces sensitive, low-cost, and powerful sensors. Due to the fabrication of different electrical and mechanical components on a single chip and complex process steps, MEMS sensors are prone to deterministic and random errors. Thus, testing, calibration, and quality control have become obligatory to maintain the quality and reliability of the sensors. This is where Artificial Intelligence (AI) can provide significant benefits, such as handling complex data, performing root cause analysis, efficient feature estimation, process optimization, product improvement, time-saving, automation, fault diagnosis and detection, drift compensation, signal de-noising, etc. Despite several benefits, the embodiment of AI poses multiple challenges. This review paper provides a systematic, in-depth analysis of AI applications in the MEMS-based sensors field for both the product and the system level adaptability by analyzing more than 100 articles. This paper summarizes the state-of-the-art, current trends of AI applications in MEMS sensors and outlines the challenges of AI incorporation in an industrial setting to improve manufacturing processes. Finally, we reflect upon all the findings based on the three proposed research questions to discover the future research scope.

Pedigree charts remain essential in oncological genetic counseling for identifying individuals with an increased risk of developing hereditary tumors. However, this valuable data source often remains confined to paper files, going unused. We propose a computer-aided detection/diagnosis system, based on machine learning and deep learning techniques, capable of the following: (1) assisting genetic oncologists in digitizing paper-based pedigree charts, and in generating new digital ones, and (2) automatically predicting the genetic predisposition risk directly from these digital pedigree charts. To the best of our knowledge, there are no similar studies in the current literature, and consequently, no utilization of software based on artificial intelligence on pedigree charts has been made public yet. By incorporating medical images and other data from omics sciences, there is also a fertile ground for training additional artificial intelligence systems, broadening the software predictive capabilities. We plan to bridge the gap between scientific advancements and practical implementation by modernizing and enhancing existing oncological genetic counseling services. This would mark the pioneering development of an AI-based application designed to enhance various aspects of genetic counseling, leading to improved patient care and advancements in the field of oncogenetics.

Novel architectures incorporating transport networks and artificial intelligence (AI) are currently being developed for beyond 5G and 6G technologies. Given that the interfacing mobile and transport network nodes deliver high transactional packet volume in downlink and uplink streams, 6G networks envision adopting diverse transport networks, including non-terrestrial types of transport networks such as the satellite network, High-Altitude Platform Systems (HAPS), and DOCSIS cable TV. Hence, there is a need to match the traffic to the transport network. This paper focuses on such a matching problem and defines a method that leverages machine learning and mixed-integer linear programming. Consequently, the proposed scheme in this paper is to develop a traffic steering capability based on types of transport networks, namely, optical, satellite, and DOCSIS cable. Novel findings demonstrate a more than 90% accuracy of steered traffic to respective types of transport networks for dedicated transport network resources.

Fake news is an explosive subject, being undoubtedly among the most controversial and difficult challenges facing society in the present-day environment of technology and information, which greatly affects the individuals who are vulnerable and easily influenced, shaping their decisions, actions, and even beliefs. In the course of discussing the gravity and dissemination of the fake news phenomenon, this article aims to clarify the distinctions between fake news, misinformation, and disinformation, along with conducting a thorough analysis of the most widely read academic papers that have tackled the topic of fake news research using various machine learning techniques. Utilizing specific keywords for dataset extraction from Clarivate Analytics’ Web of Science Core Collection, the bibliometric analysis spans six years, offering valuable insights aimed at identifying key trends, methodologies, and notable strategies within this multidisciplinary field. The analysis encompasses the examination of prolific authors, prominent journals, collaborative efforts, prior publications, covered subjects, keywords, bigrams, trigrams, theme maps, co-occurrence networks, and various other relevant topics. One noteworthy aspect related to the extracted dataset is the remarkable growth rate observed in association with the analyzed subject, indicating an impressive increase of 179.31%. The growth rate value, coupled with the relatively short timeframe, further emphasizes the research community’s keen interest in this subject. In light of these findings, the paper draws attention to key contributions and gaps in the existing literature, providing researchers and decision-makers innovative viewpoints and perspectives on the ongoing battle against the spread of fake news in the age of information.

As the global population is expected to reach 10 billion by 2050, the agricultural sector faces the challenge of achieving an increase of 60% in food production without using much more land. This paper explores the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to bridge this “land gap” and mitigate the environmental implications of agricultural land use. Typically, the problem with using AI in such agricultural sectors is the need for more specific infrastructure to enable developers to design AI and ML engineers to deploy these AIs. It is, therefore, essential to develop dedicated infrastructures to apply AI models that optimize resource extraction in the agricultural sector. This article presents an infrastructure for the execution and development of AI-based models using open-source technology, and this infrastructure has been optimized and tuned for agricultural environments. By embracing the MLOps culture, the automation of AI model development processes is promoted, ensuring efficient workflows, fostering collaboration among multidisciplinary teams, and promoting the rapid deployment of AI-driven solutions adaptable to changing field conditions. The proposed architecture integrates state-of-the-art tools to cover the entire AI model lifecycle, enabling efficient workflows for data scientists and ML engineers. Considering the nature of the agricultural field, it also supports diverse IoT protocols, ensuring communication between sensors and AI models and running multiple AI models simultaneously, optimizing hardware resource utilization. Surveys specifically designed and conducted for this paper with professionals related to AI show promising results. These findings demonstrate that the proposed architecture helps close the gap between data scientists and ML engineers, easing the collaboration between them and simplifying their work through the whole AI model lifecycle.

Machine learning (ML) is a branch of artificial intelligence that has been developing at a dynamic pace in recent years. ML is also linked with Big Data, which are huge datasets that need special tools and approaches to process them. ML algorithms make use of data to learn how to perform specific tasks or make appropriate decisions. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of recent ML approaches that have been applied to the task of mobile robot control, and they are divided into the following: supervised learning, unsupervised learning, and reinforcement learning. The distinction of ML methods applied to wheeled mobile robots and to walking robots is also presented in the paper. The strengths and weaknesses of the compared methods are formulated, and future prospects are proposed. The results of the carried out literature review enable one to state the ML methods that have been applied to different tasks, such as the following: position estimation, environment mapping, SLAM, terrain classification, obstacle avoidance, path following, learning to walk, and multirobot coordination. The survey allowed us to associate the most commonly used ML algorithms with mobile robotic tasks. There still exist many open questions and challenges such as the following: complex ML algorithms and limited computational resources on board a mobile robot; decision making and motion control in real time; the adaptability of the algorithms to changing environments; the acquisition of large volumes of valuable data; and the assurance of safety and reliability of a robot’s operation. The development of ML algorithms for nature-inspired walking robots also seems to be a challenging research issue as there exists a very limited amount of such solutions in the recent literature.

The Suzuki coupling is a transition metal-catalyzed, cross-coupling carbon–carbon (C–C) bond forming reaction between organic boron compounds and organic halides. As an operationally simple and versatilely applicable procedure, the Suzuki coupling reaction has found immense applications in drug discovery and development in the pharmaceutical industry. Recently, the topic of catalyst recycling has undergone intensive investigations with ever-growing interest in eco-friendly and sustainable synthesis. To recapitulate the latest progress in catalyst recycling in the Suzuki coupling reaction, this invited paper reviews key principles, benefits, challenges, and cutting-edge applications of recyclable catalysts for green synthesis of industrially valuable bioactive molecules. This review paper also discusses how artificial intelligence (AI) could further advance green synthesis of pharmaceutical products.

Breast cancer patients who have pathological complete response (pCR) to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) are more likely to have better clinical outcomes. The ability to predict which patient will respond to NAC early in the treatment course is important because it could help to minimize unnecessary toxic NAC and to modify regimens mid-treatment to achieve better efficacy. Machine learning (ML) is increasingly being used in radiology and medicine because it can identify relationships amongst complex data elements to inform outcomes without the need to specify such relationships a priori. One of the most popular deep learning methods that applies to medical images is the Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). In contrast to supervised ML, deep learning CNN can operate on the whole images without requiring radiologists to manually contour the tumor on images. Although there have been many review papers on supervised ML prediction of pCR, review papers on deep learning prediction of pCR are sparse. Deep learning CNN could also incorporate multiple image types, clinical data such as demographics and molecular subtypes, as well as data from multiple treatment time points to predict pCR. The goal of this study is to perform a systematic review of deep learning methods that use whole-breast MRI images without annotation or tumor segmentation to predict pCR in breast cancer.

Clinical prediction models for spine surgery applications are on the rise, with an increasing reliance on machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL). Many of the predicted outcomes are uncommon; therefore, to ensure the models’ effectiveness in clinical practice it is crucial to properly evaluate them. This systematic review aims to identify and evaluate current research-based ML and DL models applied for spine surgery, specifically those predicting binary outcomes with a focus on their evaluation metrics. Overall, 60 papers were included, and the findings were reported according to the PRISMA guidelines. A total of 13 papers focused on lengths of stay (LOS), 12 on readmissions, 12 on non-home discharge, 6 on mortality, and 5 on reoperations. The target outcomes exhibited data imbalances ranging from 0.44% to 42.4%. A total of 59 papers reported the model’s area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC), 28 mentioned accuracies, 33 provided sensitivity, 29 discussed specificity, 28 addressed positive predictive value (PPV), 24 included the negative predictive value (NPV), 25 indicated the Brier score with 10 providing a null model Brier, and 8 detailed the F1 score. Additionally, data visualization varied among the included papers. This review discusses the use of appropriate evaluation schemes in ML and identifies several common errors and potential bias sources in the literature. Embracing these recommendations as the field advances may facilitate the integration of reliable and effective ML models in clinical settings.

In recent years, generative transformers have become increasingly prevalent in the field of artificial intelligence, especially within the scope of natural language processing. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of these models, beginning with the foundational theories introduced by Alan Turing and extending to contemporary generative transformer architectures. The manuscript serves as a review, historical account, and tutorial, aiming to offer a thorough understanding of the models’ importance, underlying principles, and wide-ranging applications. The tutorial section includes a practical guide for constructing a basic generative transformer model. Additionally, the paper addresses the challenges, ethical implications, and future directions in the study of generative models.

Photovoltaic (PV) fault detection is crucial because undetected PV faults can lead to significant energy losses, with some cases experiencing losses of up to 10%. The efficiency of PV systems depends upon the reliable detection and diagnosis of faults. The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques has been a growing trend in addressing these issues. The goal of this systematic review is to offer a comprehensive overview of the recent advancements in AI-based methodologies for PV fault detection, consolidating the key findings from 31 research papers. An initial pool of 142 papers were identified, from which 31 were selected for in-depth review following the PRISMA guidelines. The title, objective, methods, and findings of each paper were analyzed, with a focus on machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) approaches. ML and DL are particularly suitable for PV fault detection because of their capacity to process and analyze large amounts of data to identify complex patterns and anomalies. This study identified several AI techniques used for fault detection in PV systems, ranging from classical ML methods like k-nearest neighbor (KNN) and random forest to more advanced deep learning models such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). Quantum circuits and infrared imagery were also explored as potential solutions. The analysis found that DL models, in general, outperformed traditional ML models in accuracy and efficiency. This study shows that AI methodologies have evolved and been increasingly applied in PV fault detection. The integration of AI in PV fault detection offers high accuracy and effectiveness. After reviewing these studies, we proposed an Artificial Neural Network (ANN)-based method for PV fault detection and classification.

Given the increasingly important role that the use of artificial intelligence algorithms is taking on in the medical field today (especially in oncology), the purpose of this systematic review is to analyze the main reports on such algorithms applied for the prognostic evaluation of patients with head and neck malignancies. The objective of this paper is to examine the currently available literature in the field of artificial intelligence applied to head and neck oncology, particularly in the prognostic evaluation of the patient with this kind of tumor, by means of a systematic review. The paper exposes an overview of the applications of artificial intelligence in deriving prognostic information related to the prediction of survival and recurrence and how these data may have a potential impact on the choice of therapeutic strategy, making it increasingly personalized. This systematic review was written following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines.

Incorporating artificial intelligence and machine learning into energy conversion, storage, and distribution fields presents exciting prospects for optimizing energy conversion processes and shaping national and global energy markets. This integration rapidly grows and demonstrates promising advancements and successful practical implementations. This paper comprehensively examines the current state of applying artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms in energy conversion and management evaluation and optimization tasks. It highlights the latest developments and the most promising algorithms and assesses their merits and drawbacks, encompassing specific applications and relevant scenarios. Furthermore, the authors propose recommendations to emphasize the prioritization of acquiring real-world experimental and simulated data and adopting standardized, explicit reporting in research publications. This review paper includes details on data size, accuracy, error rates achieved, and comparisons of algorithm performance against established benchmarks.

This paper presents an overview of the uses of the combination of eye tracking and artificial intelligence. In the paper, several aspects of both eye tracking and applied AI methods have been analyzed. It analyzes the eye tracking hardware used along with the sampling frequency, the number of test participants, additional parameters, the extraction of features, the artificial intelligence methods used and the methods of verification of the results. Finally, it includes a comparison of the results obtained in the analyzed literature and a discussion about them.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly important, especially in the medical field. While AI has been used in medicine for some time, its growth in the last decade is remarkable. Specifically, machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques in medicine have been increasingly adopted due to the growing abundance of health-related data, the improved suitability of such techniques for managing large datasets, and more computational power. ML and DL methodologies are fostering the development of new “intelligent” tools and expert systems to process data, to automatize human–machine interactions, and to deliver advanced predictive systems that are changing every aspect of the scientific research, industry, and society. The Italian scientific community was instrumental in advancing this research area. This article aims to conduct a comprehensive investigation of the ML and DL methodologies and applications used in medicine by the Italian research community in the last five years. To this end, we selected all the papers published in the last five years with at least one of the authors affiliated to an Italian institution that in the title, in the abstract, or in the keywords present the terms “machine learning” or “deep learning” and reference a medical area. We focused our research on journal papers under the hypothesis that Italian researchers prefer to present novel but well-established research in scientific journals. We then analyzed the selected papers considering different dimensions, including the medical topic, the type of data, the pre-processing methods, the learning methods, and the evaluation methods. As a final outcome, a comprehensive overview of the Italian research landscape is given, highlighting how the community has increasingly worked on a very heterogeneous range of medical problems.

Today, with rapid advances in technology, computer-based studies and Artificial Intelligence (AI) approaches are finding their place in every field, especially in the medical sector, where they attract great attention. The Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) stands as the most intricate joint within the human body, and diseases related to this joint are quite common. In this paper, we reviewed studies that utilize AI-based algorithms and computer-aided programs for investigating TMJ and TMJ-related diseases. We conducted a literature search on Google Scholar, Web of Science, and PubMed without any time constraints and exclusively selected English articles. Moreover, we examined the references to papers directly related to the topic matter. As a consequence of the survey, a total of 66 articles within the defined scope were assessed. These selected papers were distributed across various areas, with 11 focusing on segmentation, 3 on Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA), 10 on TMJ Osteoarthritis (OA), 21 on Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD), 6 on decision support systems, 10 reviews, and 5 on sound studies. The observed trend indicates a growing interest in artificial intelligence algorithms, suggesting that the number of studies in this field will likely continue to expand in the future.

The past few decades have witnessed remarkable progress in the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in medicine, notably in medical imaging. The application of ML to dental and oral imaging has also been developed, powered by the availability of clinical dental images. The present work aims to investigate recent progress concerning the application of ML in the diagnosis of oral diseases using oral X-ray imaging, namely the quality and outcome of such methods. The specific research question was developed using the PICOT methodology. The review was conducted in the Web of Science, Science Direct, and IEEE Xplore databases, for articles reporting the use of ML and AI for diagnostic purposes in X-ray-based oral imaging. Imaging types included panoramic, periapical, bitewing X-ray images, and oral cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). The search was limited to papers published in the English language from 2018 to 2022. The initial search included 104 papers that were assessed for eligibility. Of these, 22 were included for a final appraisal. The full text of the articles was carefully analyzed and the relevant data such as the clinical application, the ML models, the metrics used to assess their performance, and the characteristics of the datasets, were registered for further analysis. The paper discusses the opportunities, challenges, and limitations found.

Advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques bring new opportunities to numerous intractable tasks for operation and control in modern electric distribution systems. Nevertheless, AI applications for such grids as cyber-physical systems encounter multifaceted challenges, e.g., high requirements for the quality and quantity of training data, data efficiency, physical inconsistency, interpretability, and privacy concerns. This paper provides a systematic overview of the state-of-the-art AI methodologies in the post-pandemic era, represented by transfer learning, deep attention mechanism, graph learning, and their combination with reinforcement learning and physics-guided neural networks. Dedicated research efforts on harnessing such recent advances, including power flow, state estimation, voltage control, topology identification, and line parameter calibration, are categorized and investigated in detail. Revolving around the characteristics of distribution system operation and integration of distributed energy resources, this paper also illuminates prospects and challenges typified by the privacy, explainability, and interpretability of such AI applications in smart grids. Finally, this paper attempts to shed light on the deeper and broader prospects in the realm of smart distribution grids by interoperating them with smart building and transportation electrification

During an emergency rescue operation, rescuers have to deal with many different health complications like cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, psychiatric, etc. The identification process of the common health complications in rescue events is not very difficult or time-consuming because the health vital symptoms or primary observations are enough to identify, but it is quite difficult with some complications related to neurology e.g., schizophrenia, epilepsy with non-motor seizures, or retrograde amnesia because they cannot be identified with the trend of health vital data. The symptoms have a wide spectrum and are often non-distinguishable from other types of complications. Further, waiting for results from medical tests like MRI and ECG is time-consuming and not suitable for emergency cases where a quick treatment path is an obvious necessity after the diagnosis. In this paper, we present a novel solution for overcoming these challenges by employing artificial intelligence (AI) models in the diagnostic procedure of neurological complications in rescue situations. The novelty lies in the procedure of generating input features from raw rescue data used in AI models, as the data are not like traditional clinical data collected from hospital repositories. Rather, the data were gathered directly from more than 200,000 rescue cases and required natural language processing techniques to extract meaningful information. A step-by-step analysis of developing multiple AI models that can facilitate the fast identification of neurological complications, in general, is presented in this paper. Advanced data analytics are used to analyze the complete record of 273,183 rescue events in a duration of almost 10 years, including rescuers’ analysis of the complications and their diagnostic methods. To develop the detection model, seven different machine learning algorithms-Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF), K-nearest neighbor (KNN), Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB), Logistic Regression (LR), Naive Bayes (NB) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) were used. Observing the model’s performance, we conclude that the neural network and extreme gradient boosting show the best performance in terms of selected evaluation criteria. To utilize this result in practical scenarios, the paper also depicts the possibility of embedding such machine learning models in hardware like FPGA. The goal is to achieve fast detection results, which is a primary requirement in any rescue mission. An inference time analysis of the selected ML models and VTA AI accelerator of Apache-TVM machine learning compiler used for the FPGA is also presented in this research.

Recent advancements in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have proven UAVs to be an inevitable part of future networking and communications systems. While many researchers have proposed UAV-assisted solutions for improving traditional network performance by extending coverage and capacity, an in-depth study on aspects of artificial intelligence-based autonomous UAV network design has not been fully explored yet. The objective of this paper is to present a comprehensive survey of AI-based autonomous UAV networks. A careful survey was conducted of more than 100 articles on UAVs focusing on the classification of autonomous features, network resource management and planning, multiple access and routing protocols, and power control and energy efficiency for UAV networks. By reviewing and analyzing the UAV networking literature, it is found that AI-based UAVs are a technologically feasible and economically viable paradigm for cost-effectiveness in the design and deployment of such next-generation autonomous networks. Finally, this paper identifies open research problems in the emerging field of UAV networks. This study is expected to stimulate more research endeavors to build low-cost, energy-efficient, next-generation autonomous UAV networks.

In the world of data, there is an urgent need to find ways to extract knowledge and information for improving patient care. Artificial intelligence (AI) is an emerging tool that has the potential to provide cardiologists with new insights and knowledge. The healthcare industry has already begun the digital transformation of vast reams of data (Big Data) that are generated in routine clinical practice. AI has the potential to make a significant impact on healthcare by improving the efficiency of clinical care, providing personalized treatment, and identifying new disease biomarkers. Machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) are AI techniques that utilize large datasets and computational power for analysis and decision making. There are three main ML techniques: supervised learning, unsupervised learning, and reinforcement learning. Another functional AI service that has been presented is natural language processing (NLP), and it is applicable for analyzing patient documentation. In this paper, the scope of AI workflow, the most often used algorithms, and their performance metrics are explained. Explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) has a prominent potential to be a useful tool for clinicians as it provides full transparency into an AI model’s decision-making process, but few applications have been reviewed. In this paper, the challenges and limitations of AI in cardiology are discussed in terms of ethical, methodological, and legal issues. Furthermore, the successful establishment of good practices toward the right development and deployment of automated ML-based systems will ensure a regulatory framework that can strengthen patients’ trust in AI/ML-based clinical decision support systems.

One of the three most serious and deadly cancers in the world is colorectal cancer. The most crucial stage, like with any cancer, is early diagnosis. In the medical industry, artificial intelligence (AI) has recently made tremendous strides and showing promise for clinical applications. Machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) applications have recently gained popularity in the analysis of medical texts and images due to the benefits and achievements they have made in the early diagnosis of cancerous tissues and organs. In this paper, we intend to systematically review the state-of-the-art research on AI-based ML and DL techniques applied to the modeling of colorectal cancer. All research papers in the field of colorectal cancer are collected based on ML and DL techniques, and they are then classified into three categories: the aim of the prediction, the method of the prediction, and data samples. Following that, a thorough summary and a list of the studies gathered under each topic are provided. We conclude our study with a critical discussion of the challenges and opportunities in colorectal cancer prediction using ML and DL techniques by concentrating on the technical and medical points of view. Finally, we believe that our study will be helpful to scientists who are considering employing ML and DL methods to diagnose colorectal cancer.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is emerging as a potential threat to many lives worldwide. It is very important to understand and apply effective strategies to counter the impact of AMR and its mutation from a medical treatment point of view. The intersection of artificial intelligence (AI), especially deep learning/machine learning, has led to a new direction in antimicrobial identification. Furthermore, presently, the availability of huge amounts of data from multiple sources has made it more effective to use these artificial intelligence techniques to identify interesting insights into AMR genes such as new genes, mutations, drug identification, conditions favorable to spread, and so on. Therefore, this paper presents a review of state-of-the-art challenges and opportunities. These include interesting input features posing challenges in use, state-of-the-art deep-learning/machine-learning models for robustness and high accuracy, challenges, and prospects to apply these techniques for practical purposes. The paper concludes with the encouragement to apply AI to the AMR sector with the intention of practical diagnosis and treatment, since presently most studies are at early stages with minimal application in the practice of diagnosis and treatment of disease.

The need for artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) models to optimize data center (DC) operations increases as the volume of operations management data upsurges tremendously. These strategies can assist operators in better understanding their DC operations and help them make informed decisions upfront to maintain service reliability and availability. The strategies include developing models that optimize energy efficiency, identifying inefficient resource utilization and scheduling policies, and predicting outages. In addition to model hyperparameter tuning, feature subset selection (FSS) is critical for identifying relevant features for effectively modeling DC operations to provide insight into the data, optimize model performance, and reduce computational expenses. Hence, this paper introduces the Shapley Additive exPlanation (SHAP) values method, a class of additive feature attribution values for identifying relevant features that is rarely discussed in the literature. We compared its effectiveness with several commonly used, importance-based feature selection methods. The methods were tested on real DC operations data streams obtained from the ENEA CRESCO6 cluster with 20,832 cores. To demonstrate the effectiveness of SHAP compared to other methods, we selected the top ten most important features from each method, retrained the predictive models, and evaluated their performance using the MAE, RMSE, and MPAE evaluation criteria. The results presented in this paper demonstrate that the predictive models trained using features selected with the SHAP-assisted method performed well, with a lower error and a reasonable execution time compared to other methods.

Distribution network operators face technical and operational challenges in integrating the increasing number of distributed energy resources (DER) with the distribution network. The hosting capacity analysis quantifies the level of power quality violation on the network due to the high penetration of the DER, such as over voltage, under voltage, transformer and feeder overloading, and protection failures. Real-time monitoring of the power quality factors such as the voltage, current, angle, frequency, harmonics and overloading that would help the distribution network operators overcome the challenges created by the high penetration of the DER. In this paper, different conventional hosting capacity analysis methods have been discussed. These methods have been compared based on the network constraints, impact factors, required input data, computational efficiency, and output accuracy. The artificial intelligence approaches of the hosting capacity analysis for the real-time monitoring of distribution network parameters have also been covered in this paper. Different artificial intelligence techniques have been analysed for sustainable integration, power system optimisation, and overcoming real-time monitoring challenges of conventional hosting capacity analysis methods. An overview of the conventional hosting capacity analysis methods, artificial intelligence techniques for overcoming the challenges of distributed energy resources integration, and different impact factors affecting the real-time hosting capacity analysis has been summarised. The distribution system operators and researchers will find the review paper as an easy reference for planning and further research. Finally, it is evident that artificial intelligence techniques could be a better alternative solution for real-time estimation and forecasting of the distribution network hosting capacity considering the intermittent nature of the DER, consumer loads, and network constraints.

Non-Technical Losses (NTL) represent a serious concern for electric companies. These losses are responsible for revenue losses, as well as reduced system reliability. Part of the revenue loss is charged to legal consumers, thus, causing social imbalance. NTL methods have been developed in order to reduce the impact in physical distribution systems and legal consumers. These methods can be classified as hardware-based and non-hardware-based. Hardware-based methods need an entirely new system infrastructure to be implemented, resulting in high investment and increased cost for energy companies, thus hampering implementation in poorer nations. With this in mind, this paper performs a review of non-hardware-based NTL detection methods. These methods use distribution systems and consumers’ data to detect abnormal energy consumption. They can be classified as network-based, which use network technical parameters to search for energy losses, data-based methods, which use data science and machine learning, and hybrid methods, which combine both. This paper focuses on reviewing non-hardware-based NTL detection methods, presenting a NTL detection methods overview and a literature search and analysis.
