The present work investigates the influence of rectangular deflectors on the performance of a Savonius turbine mounted in an L-shaped channel, which represents a geometry like that found in one oscillating water column (OWC) device. It also performs a geometric investigation of the entrance region of the channel. More precisely, it investigates the effect of the height/length ratio (H1/L1) of the entering region of the channel on the system performance for three different configurations: (1) without the use of deflectors, (2) with just one deflector upstream the turbine, and (3) with one deflector upstream and another downstream the turbine. The geometric investigation is performed based on the constructal design method, and the entering channel area (A1) is the problem constraint. The performance indicators are the mechanical power in the Savonius turbine and the available power in the device. For all cases, it is considered turbulent airflow in the domain, being solved by the unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes mass and momentum equations. The numerical solution was obtained with the finite-volume method using the Ansys FLUENT software (version 2021 R1). The k-ω shear stress transport turbulence closure model is used. The results demonstrated that the mechanical and available powers depend on the H1/L1 ratio, regardless of the usage of deflectors. For instance, differences of up to 16.35% in mechanical power and 7.25% in available power were observed between the best and worst performance configurations in the case without deflectors. The use of deflectors resulted in increases of two and three times in available and mechanical powers, respectively, when the cases with one and two deflectors are compared with those without deflectors. Assessing drag force and Reynolds stresses in turbulent flows is crucial for evaluating the stability and longevity of hydraulic structures. Yet, this task is challenging due to the complex nature of turbulent flows. To address this, physical models are often employed. Nonetheless, this practice is associated with difficulties, especially in the case of high sampling frequency where the inherent randomness of velocity fluctuations becomes mixed with the measurement noise. This study introduces a stochastic approach, which aims to mitigate bias from measurement errors and provide a probabilistic estimate of extreme stress values. To accomplish this, a simple experimental setup with a hydraulic jump was employed to acquire long-duration velocity measurements. Subsequently, a modified first-order autoregressive model was applied through ensemble simulations, demonstrating the benefits of the stochastic approach. The analysis highlights its effectiveness in estimating the uncertainty of extreme events frequency and minimizing the bias induced by the noise in the high-magnitude velocity measurements and by the limited length of observations. Due to their long-lived nature, vortex rings are highly promising for the non-contact transportation of colloidal microparticles. However, because of the high complexity of the structures, their description using rigorous, closed-form mathematical expressions is challenging, particularly in the presence of strongly inhomogeneous colloidal suspensions. In this work, we comprehensively study this phenomenon, placing special emphasis on a quantitative description of the ability of vortex rings to move the particles suspended in a liquid over distances significantly exceeding the ring's dimensions. Moreover, within the study, we present straightforward analytical approximations extracted by using the fitting of the experimental and numerical simulation observations that reveal the dynamics of vortex rings transporting the microparticles. It includes both the dependence of the concentration on the distance traveled by the vortex ring and coefficients describing the evolution of vortex ring shape in time, which were not presented in the literature before. It turns out that despite the fact that 2D modeling is a simplification of the full 3D problem solution and is unable to capture some of the minor effects of real behavior, it has demonstrated a good consistency with the results obtained via experiments regarding the process of particles transportation. Incipient motion has been a topic of investigation by researchers, engineers and scientists for more than a century. The main approach for studying sediment entrainment has been the static approach that uses temporal and spatial averaged flow parameters like bed shear stress and stream power to link them indirectly to sediment entrainment. Recent research outputs have shed light on the important role of turbulent fluctuations in the sediment transport process. It is suggested that the approach of using temporal and spatial averaged parameters fails to account for the dynamic and probabilistic nature of the entrainment process, as inherited by flow turbulence. This has led to the introduction of the only dynamic criteria in the literature for studying sediment entrainment, namely the impulse and energy criteria. These criteria take into account both the magnitude and duration of the turbulent flow event used for assessing the conditions that can result in sediment entrainment. In light of this, this work aims to assess whether there is a trend in terms of the type of flow structures that occur in sequence before and after the occurrences of the flow impulses that have resulted in the coarse particle's entrainment. To achieve this, we conducted a well-controlled laboratory experiment to investigate the incipient motion of a 7 cm diameter instrumented particle. Five runs of the experiment were performed at flowrates close to the threshold of motion. The instrumented particle was equipped with micro-electro-mechanical sensors (MEMS) to accurately measure its inertial dynamics and detect motion. The sensors recorded entrainment events, and these events were stochastically linked to the impulses occurring for the tested flow conditions. Quadrant analysis was used to investigate the type of flow structures that occurred before, during and after the occurrence of quadrant events with an impulse above the critical impulse. The findings herein associate coarse particle entrainments with energetic impulses linked primarily to sweep events (Q4) and secondarily, sequence of sweeps (Q4) and ejections (Q1). This paper attempts to develop a Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD)-based Reduced Order Model (ROMs) that can quickly but accurately predict the forces and moments experienced by a road vehicle such that they be used by an on-board controller to determine the vehicle's trajectory. DMD can linearize a large dataset of high-dimensional measurements by decomposing them into low-dimensional coherent structures and associated time dynamics. This ROM can then also be applied to predict the future state of the fluid flow. Existing literature on DMD is limited to low Reynolds number applications. This paper presents DMD analyses of the flow around an idealized road vehicle, called the Ahmed body, at a Reynolds number of 2.7 × 10 6 . The high-dimensional dataset used in this paper was collected from a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation performed using the Menter's Shear Stress Transport (SST) turbulence model within the context of Improved Delayed Detached Eddy Simulations (IDDES). The DMD algorithm, as available in the literature, was found to suffer nonphysical dampening of the medium-to-high frequency modes. Enhancements to the existing algorithm were explored, and a modified DMD approach is presented in this paper, which includes: (a) a requirement of higher sampling rate to obtain a higher resolution of data, and (b) a custom filtration process to remove spurious modes. The modified DMD algorithm thus developed was applied to the high-Reynolds-number, separation-dominated flow past the idealized ground vehicle. The effectiveness of the modified algorithm was tested by comparing future predictions of force and moment coefficients as predicted by the DMD-based ROM to the reference CFD simulation data, and they were found to offer significant improvement. Homogeneous turbulence and turbulence in scale-by-scale equilibrium, played a leading role in the turbulence research of the second half of the twentieth century, and Jack Herring was an important contributor to these developments. The research activity which has followed these developments over the past ten to fifteen years concerns turbulence, which is out of scale-by-scale equilibrium either because it is non-stationary or because it is non-homogeneous or both. This paper addresses one of the major obstacles arising in the high-fidelity scale-resolving simulations of turbulent flows inside ducts with the walls covered by acoustic liners in order to attenuate the sound radiated from the duct. It consists of the development of spatial hydrodynamic (convective) instability over the treated walls at the low values of the acoustic resistance of the liner. For reasons that remain unclear, the growth rate of this instability and its effect on sound propagation through the duct is strongly overestimated by the CFD simulations using the macroscopic concept of the locally reacting acoustic impedance. A new damping volume source term ("body force") is proposed, whose introduction into the momentum equation resolves this issue by means of artificially suppressing the instability while remaining within the framework of the computationally efficient model of the impedance wall, i.e., without trying to simulate the liner microscopically. Examples are presented of the application of the developed methodology to the flows in the grazing impedance tubes with two different liners. They suggest that the proposed form of the damping source term can be considered universal and that the suppression of the hydrodynamic instability ensured by this term is not accompanied by any significant distortion of the propagation of the sound waves and the turbulence statistics, except for a very narrow near-wall region. The flow over alternating roughness strips oriented normally to the mean stream is studied using wall-modeled large-eddy simulations (WMLES) and improved delayed detached-eddy simulations (IDDES) (a hybrid method solving the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations near the wall and switching to large-eddy simulations (LES) in the core of the flow). The calculations are performed in an open-channel configuration. Various approaches are used to account for roughness by either modifying the wall boundary condition for WMLES or the model itself for IDDES or by adding a drag forcing term to the momentum equations. By comparing the numerical results with the experimental data, both methods with both roughness modifications are shown to reproduce the non-equilibrium effects, but noticeable differences are observed. The WMLES, although affected by the underlying equilibrium assumption, predicts the return to equilibrium of the skin friction in good agreement with the experiments. The velocity predicted by the IDDES does not have memory of the upstream conditions and recovers to the equilibrium conditions faster. Memory of the upstream conditions appears to be a critical factor for the accurate computational modeling of this flow. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CFD-DEM modelling of particle-laden turbulent flow is challenging in terms of the required and obtained CFD resolution, heavy DEM computations, and the limitations of the method. Here, we assess the efficiency of a particle-tracking solver in OpenFOAM with RANS-DEM and LES-DEM approaches under the unresolved CFD-DEM framework. Furthermore, we investigate aspects of the unresolved CFD-DEM method with regard to the coupling regime, particle boundary condition and turbulence modelling. Applying one-way and two-way coupling to our RANS-DEM simulations demonstrates that it is sufficient to include one-way coupling when the particle concentration is small (O ~ 10 − 5 ). Moreover, our study suggests an approach to estimate the particle boundary condition for cases when data is unavailable. In contrast to what has been previously reported for the adopted case, our RANS-DEM results demonstrate that simple dispersion models considerably underpredict particle dispersion and previously observed reasonable particle dispersion were due to an error in the numerical setup rather than the used dispersion model claiming to include turbulence effects on particle trajectories. LES-DEM may restrict extreme mesh refinement, and, under such scenarios, dynamic LES turbulence models seem to overcome the poor performance of static LES turbulence models. Sub-grade scale effects cannot be neglected when using coarse mesh resolution in LES-DEM and must be recovered with efficient modelling approaches to predict accurate particle dispersion. In nature, turbulent flows exist that are neither simply 2D nor 3D but are forced towards one state or the other by boundary conditions such as varying stratification. Here, we report the first evidence of the co-existence of an inverse and a direct energy cascade in an experimental flow driven by Faraday waves in water. We find that an inverse energy cascade at the fluid surface and a direct energy cascade in the 3D bulk flow underneath co-exist. We base our analysis on temporally and spatially well-resolved velocity fields obtained by particle image velocimetry measurements at planes parallel and perpendicular to the water surface. The findings also provide strong evidence that the intense turbulent 2D surface flow drives the 3D bulk flow through sporadic vertical jets as a source of momentum to the bulk liquid. Featured Application: This research describes the application of an instrumented sphere for monitoring the vigorousness of its interactions as it is transported downstream a turbulent river. The presented tool has the potential to offer, in a novel and relatively accessible and direct way, information that links to the bed load transport rates in natural streams and built canals. Sediment transport at near threshold to low transport stages (below the continuous transport) can still be affected by flow turbulence and its dynamics can benefit from further comprehensive studies. This study uses an instrumented particle embedded with micro electromechanical sensors (MEMS) to allow tracking the motions and forces acting on it, leading to and during its transport. Instrumented particle transport experiments were carried out at laboratory flume under a range of flow conditions. The probability distributions functions (PDFs) of bed load particle instantaneous velocities, hop distances and associated travel times (measured from start to stop of transport) were obtained for all the performed experiments with varying flow rates and particle density. The modelled distributions are useful and enable a deeper understanding of bed load sediment transport dynamics from a Lagrangian perspective. Furthermore, the results analyzed from the instrumented particle (including the particle's transport mode) were validated using visual particle tracking methods (top and side cameras). The findings of this study demonstrate that for the range of turbulent flows trialed herein, the instrumented particle can be a useful, accessible, and low-cost tool for obtaining particle transport dynamics, having demonstrated satisfactory potential for field deployment in the near future. The present work aims to develop a computational model investigating turbulent flows in a problem that simulates an oscillating water column device (OWC) considering a Savonius turbine in the air duct region. Incompressible, two-dimensional, unsteady, and turbulent flows were considered for three different configurations: (1) free turbine inserted in a long and large channel for verification/validation of the model, (2) an enclosure domain that mimics an OWC device with a constant velocity at its inlet, and (3) the same domain as that in Case 2 with sinusoidal velocity imposed at the inlet. A dynamic rotational mesh in the turbine region was imposed. Time-averaged equations of the conservation of mass and balance of momentum with the k–ω Shear Stress Transport (SST) model for turbulence closure were solved with the finite volume method. The developed model led to promising results, predicting similar time–spatial-averaged power coefficients ( C P ¯ ) as those obtained in the literature for different magnitudes of the tip speed ratio (0.75 ≤ λ ≤ 2.00). The simulation of the enclosure domain increased C P ¯ for all studied values of λ in comparison with a free turbine (Case 1). Due to their common occurrence and fundamental role in human-realized processes and natural phenomena, turbulent flows are subject to constant research. One of the research tools used in these studies are hot-wire anemometers. These instruments allow for measurements in turbulent flows in a wide range of both velocities and frequencies of fluctuations. This article describes a new indirect method of determining the bandwidth shape of a constant-temperature anemometer. Modeling of wall-bounded turbulent flows is still an open problem in classical physics, with relatively slow progress in the last few decades beyond the log law, which only describes the intermediate region in wall-bounded turbulence, i.e., 30–50 y+ to 0.1–0.2 R+ in a pipe of radius R. Here, we propose a fundamentally new approach based on fractional calculus to model the entire mean velocity profile from the wall to the centerline of the pipe. Specifically, we represent the Reynolds stresses with a non-local fractional derivative of variable-order that decays with the distance from the wall. Surprisingly, we find that this variable fractional order has a universal form for all Reynolds numbers and for three different flow types, i.e., channel flow, Couette flow, and pipe flow. We first use existing databases from direct numerical simulations (DNSs) to lean the variable-order function and subsequently we test it against other DNS data and experimental measurements, including the Princeton superpipe experiments. Taken together, our findings reveal the continuous change in rate of turbulent diffusion from the wall as well as the strong nonlocality of turbulent interactions that intensify away from the wall. Moreover, we propose alternative formulations, including a divergence variable fractional (two-sided) model for turbulent flows. The total shear stress is represented by a two-sided symmetric variable fractional derivative. The numerical results show that this formulation can lead to smooth fractional-order profiles in the whole domain. This new model improves the one-sided model, which is considered in the half domain (wall to centerline) only. We use a finite difference method for solving the inverse problem, but we also introduce the fractional physics-informed neural network (fPINN) for solving the inverse and forward problems much more efficiently. The Reynolds stress equations for two-dimensional and axisymmetric turbulent shear flows are simplified by invoking local equilibrium and boundary layer approximations in the near-wall region. These equations are made determinate by appropriately modelling the pressure–velocity correlation and dissipation rate terms and solved analytically to give a relation between the turbulent shear stress τ / ρ and the kinetic energy of turbulence (k = q 2 / 2) . This is derived without external body force present. The result is identical to that proposed by Nevzgljadov in A Phenomenological Theory of Turbulence, who formulated it through phenomenological arguments based on atmospheric boundary layer measurements. The analytical approach is extended to treat turbulent flows with external body forces. A general relation τ / ρ = a 1 1 − AF Ri F q 2 / 2 is obtained for these flows, where F Ri F is a function of the gradient Richardson number Ri F , and a 1 is found to depend on turbulence models and their assumed constants. One set of constants yields a 1 = 0.378, while another gives a 1 = 0.328. With no body force, F ≡ 1 and the relation reduces to the Nevzgljadov equation with a 1 determined to be either 0.378 or 0.328, depending on model constants set assumed. The present study suggests that 0.328 is in line with Nevzgljadov's proposal. Thus, the present approach provides a theoretical base to evaluate the turbulent shear stress for flows with external body forces. The result is used to reduce the k – ε model to a one-equation model that solves the k-equation, the shear stress and kinetic energy equation, and an ε evaluated by assuming isotropic eddy viscosity behavior. Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) techniques have risen as prominent feature identification methods in the field of fluid dynamics. Any of the multiple variables of the DMD method allows to identify meaningful features from either experimental or numerical flow data on a data-driven manner. Performing a DMD analysis requires handling matrices V ∈ R n p × N , where n p and N are indicative of the spatial and temporal resolutions. The DMD analysis of a complex flow field requires long temporal sequences of well resolved data, and thus the memory footprint may become prohibitively large. In this contribution, the effect that principled spatial agglomeration (i.e., reduction in n p via clustering) has on the results derived from the DMD analysis is investigated. We compare twelve different clustering algorithms on three testcases, encompassing different flow regimes: a synthetic flow field, a R e D = 60 flow around a cylinder cross section, and a R e τ ≈ 200 turbulent channel flow. The performance of the clustering techniques is thoroughly assessed concerning both the accuracy of the results retrieved and the computational performance. From this assessment, we identify DBSCAN/HDBSCAN as the methods to be used if only relatively high agglomeration levels are affordable. On the contrary, Mini-batch K-means arises as the method of choice whenever high agglomeration n p ˜ / n p ≪ 1 is possible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, entropy generation analysis is applied to characterize and optimize a turbulent impinging jet on a heated solid surface. In particular, the influence of plate inclinations and Reynolds numbers on the turbulent heat and fluid flow properties and its impact on the thermodynamic performance of such flow arrangements are numerically investigated. For this purpose, novel model equations are derived in the frame of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) that allows calculation of local entropy generation rates in a post-processing phase including the effect of unresolved subgrid-scale irreversibilities. From this LES-based study, distinctive features of heat and flow dynamics of the impinging fluid are detected and optimal operating designs for jet impingement cooling are identified. It turned out that (1) the location of the stagnation point and that of the maximal Nusselt number differ in the case of plate inclination; (2) predominantly the impinged wall acts as a strong source of irreversibility; and (3) a flow arrangement with a jet impinging normally on the heated surface allows the most efficient use of energy which is associated with lowest exergy lost. Furthermore, it is found that increasing the Reynolds number intensifies the heat transfer and upgrades the second law efficiency of such thermal systems. The thermodynamically constrained averaging theory (TCAT) is a comprehensive theory used to formulate hierarchies of multiphase, multiscale models that are closed based upon the second law of thermodynamics. The rate of entropy production is posed in terms of the product of fluxes and forces of dissipative processes. The attractive features of TCAT include consistency across disparate length scales; thermodynamic consistency across scales; the inclusion of interfaces and common curves as well as phases; the development of kinematic equations to provide closure relations for geometric extent measures; and a structured approach to model building. The elements of the TCAT approach are shown; the ways in which each of these attractive features emerge from the TCAT approach are illustrated; and a review of the hierarchies of models that have been formulated is provided. Because the TCAT approach is mathematically involved, we illustrate how this approach can be applied by leveraging existing components of the theory that can be applied to a wide range of applications. This can result in a substantial reduction in formulation effort compared to a complete derivation while yielding identical results. Lastly, we note the previous neglect of the deviation kinetic energy, which is not important in slow porous media flows, formulate the required equations to extend the theory, and comment on applications for which the new components would be especially useful.
