This research presents a novel method for the fabrication of mercapto reduced graphene oxide (m-RGO) Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films without the need for specialized equipment. The conventional LB technique offers precise control over the deposition of thin films onto solid substrates, but its reliance on sophisticated instrumentation limits its accessibility. In this study, we demonstrate a simplified approach that circumvents the necessity for such equipment, thereby democratizing the production of m-RGO LB films. Thiolation of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) imparts enhanced stability and functionality to the resulting films, rendering them suitable for a wide range of applications in surface engineering, sensing, and catalysis. The fabricated m-RGO LB films exhibit favorable morphological, structural, and surface properties, as characterized by various analytical techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Furthermore, the performance of the m-RGO LB films is evaluated in terms of their surface wettability, electrochemical behavior, and chemical reactivity. The equipment-free fabrication approach presented herein offers a cost-effective and scalable route for the production of functionalized graphene-based thin films, thus broadening the scope for their utilization in diverse technological applications. The aim of this work was to develop and characterize a thin films composed of hyaluronic acid/ellagic acid for potential medical application. Its principal novelty, distinct from the prior literature in terms of hyaluronic acid films supplemented with phenolic acids, resides in the predominant incorporation of ellagic acid—a distinguished compound—as the primary constituent of the films. Herein, ellagic acid was dissolved in two different solvents, i.e., acetic acid (AcOH) or sodium hydroxide (NaOH), and the surface properties of the resultant films were assessed using atomic force microscopy and contact angle measurements. Additionally, various physicochemical parameters were evaluated including moisture content, antioxidant activity, and release of ellagic acid in phosphate buffered saline. Furthermore, the evaluation of films' biocompatibility was conducted using human epidermal keratinocytes, dermal fibroblasts, and human amelanotic melanoma cells (A375 and G361), and the antimicrobial activity was elucidated accordingly against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 15442. Our results showed that the films exhibited prominent antibacterial properties particularly against Staphylococcus aureus, with the 80HA/20EA/AcOH film indicating the strong biocidal activity against this strain leading to a significant reduction in viable cells. Comparatively, the 50HA/50EA/AcOH film also displayed biocidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus. Polymeric thin films based on polylactide with an addition of poly(ethylene glycol) as a plasticizer and flavonoids in the form of quercetin and berberine were subjected to tests that were particularly relevant from the point of view of contact with food. A comparative analysis of the effect of individual flavonoids on the antioxidative properties of tested films and blueberry storage was carried out. The influence of active compounds on the water vapor permeability, as well as UV protection, of the obtained materials was investigated. Also, the specific migration of individual flavonoids from obtained materials to food simulants in the form of acetic acid and ethyl alcohol was determined. The crucial point of this study is the storage of blueberries. The obtained results indicate that the selection of packaging, containing individual active compounds, depends on the purpose and requirements that the packaging must meet for particular types of food. High-throughput methods are extremely important in today's materials science, especially in the case of thin film characterization. The micro-combinatorial method enables the deposition and characterization of entire multicomponent thin film systems within a single sample. In this paper, we report the application of this method for the comprehensive TEM characterization of the Y-Ti-O layer system. Variable composition samples (YxTi1−xOy) were prepared by dual DC magnetron sputtering, covering the entire (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) concentration range. The structure and morphology of phases formed in both as-deposited and annealed samples at 600, 700, and 800 °C were revealed as a function of Y-Ti composition (x). A comprehensive map showing the appropriate amorphous and crystalline phases, and their occurrence regions of the whole Y-Ti-O layer system, was revealed. Thanks to the applied method, it was shown with ease that at the given experimental conditions, the Y2Ti2O7 phase with a pyrochlore structure forms already at 700 °C without the TiO2 and Y2O3 by-phases, which is remarkably lower than the required temperature for most physical preparation methods, demonstrating the importance and benefits of creating phase maps in materials science and technology. This study examined the impact of temperature optimization on indium tin oxide (ITO) films in monolithic HJT/perovskite tandem solar cells. ITO films were deposited using magnetron sputtering at temperatures ranging from room temperature (25 °C) to 250 °C. The sputtering target was ITO, with a mass ratio of In2O3 to SnO2 of 90% to 10%. The effects of temperature on the ITO film were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), spectroscopic ellipsometry, and sheet resistance measurements. Results showed that all ITO films exhibited a polycrystalline morphology, with diffraction peaks corresponding to planes (211), (222), (400), (440), and (622), indicating a cubic bixbyite crystal structure. The light transmittance exceeded 80%, and the sheet resistance was 75.1 Ω/sq for ITO deposited at 200 °C. The optical bandgap of deposited ITO films ranged between 3.90 eV and 3.93 eV. Structural and morphological characterization of the perovskite solar cell was performed using XRD and FE-SEM. Tandem solar cell performance was evaluated by analyzing current density-voltage characteristics under simulated sunlight. This paper presents a comprehensive investigation into the thermal stability of superlattice-like (SLL) thin films fabricated by varying the sputtering sequences of the SLL [Ge8Sb92(25nm)/GeTe(25nm)]1 and SLL [GeTe(25nm)/Ge8Sb92(25nm)]1 configurations. Our results reveal significantly enhanced ten-year data retention (Tten) for both thin films measured at 124.3 °C and 151.9 °C, respectively. These values surpass the Tten of Ge2Sb2Te5 (85 °C), clearly demonstrating the superior thermal stability of the studied SLL configurations. Interestingly, we also observe a distinct difference in the thermal stability between the two SLL configurations. The superior thermal stability of SLL [GeTe(25nm)/Ge8Sb92(25nm)]1 is attributed to the diffusion of the Sb precipitated phase from Ge8Sb92 to GeTe. This diffusion process effectively reduces the impact of the Sb phase on the thermal stability of the thin film. In contrast, in the case of SLL [Ge8Sb92(25nm)/GeTe(25nm)]1, the presence of the Sb precipitated phase in Ge8Sb92 facilitates the crystallization of GeTe, leading to reduced thermal stability. These findings underscore the significant influence of the sputtering sequence on the atomic behavior and thermal properties of superlattice-like phase change materials. Memristors, since their inception, have demonstrated remarkable characteristics, notably the exceptional reconfigurability of their memory. This study delves into electroforming-free YMnO 3 (YMO)-based resistive switches, emphasizing the reconfigurable memory effect in multiferroic YMO thin films with metallically conducting electrodes and their pivotal role in achieving adaptable frequency responses in impedance circuits consisting of reconfigurable YMO-based resistive switches and no reconfigurable passive elements, e.g., inductors and capacitors. The multiferroic YMO possesses a network of charged domain walls which can be reconfigured by a time-dependent voltage applied between the metallically conducting electrodes. Through experimental demonstrations, this study scrutinizes the impedance response not only for individual switch devices but also for impedance circuitry based on YMO resistive switches in both low- and high-resistance states, interfacing with capacitors and inductors in parallel and series configurations. Scrutinized Nyquist plots visually capture the intricate dynamics of impedance circuitry, revealing the potential of electroforming-free YMO resistive switches in finely tuning frequency responses within impedance circuits. This study investigates the effect of a high-temperature annealing process on the characteristics and performance of a memristor based on a Ag/Ga2O3/Pt structure. Through X-ray diffraction analysis, successful phase conversion from amorphous Ga2O3 to β-Ga2O3 is confirmed, attributed to an increase in grain size and recrystallization induced by annealing. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed a higher oxygen vacancy in annealed Ga2O3 thin films, which is crucial for conductive filament formation and charge transport in memristors. Films with abundant oxygen vacancies exhibit decreased set voltages and increased capacitance in a low-resistive state, enabling easy capacitance control depending on channel presence. In addition, an excellent memory device with a high on/off ratio can be implemented due to the reduction of leakage current due to recrystallization. Therefore, it is possible to manufacture a thin film suitable for a memristor by increasing the oxygen vacancy in the Ga2O3 film while improving the overall crystallinity through the annealing process. This study highlights the significance of annealing in modulating capacitance and high-resistive/low-resistive state properties of Ga2O3 memristors, contributing to optimizing device design and performance. In this work, a chemical grafting polymerization method was employed to synthesize EHPMC-g-PANI self-supporting films. Polyaniline (PANI) was grafted onto hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) modified with epichlorohydrin (EPHMC) to obtain an EHPMC-g-PANI aqueous dispersion, which was subsequently dried to form the self-supporting films. The introduction of HPMC, with its excellent film-forming ability and mechanical strength, successfully addressed the poor film-forming ability and mechanical properties intrinsic to PANI. Compared to in situ polymerized HPMC/PANI, the EHPMC-g-PANI exhibited significantly improved storage stability. Moreover, the fabricated EHPMC-g-PANI films displayed a more uniform and smoother morphology. The conductivity of all the films ranged from 10−2 to 10−1 S/cm, and their tensile strength reached up to 36.1 MPa. These results demonstrate that the prepared EHPMC-g-PANI holds promising potential for applications in various fields, including conductive paper, sensors, and conductive inks. In this study, the effect of atmospheric hydrogen plasma treatment on the in-plane conductivity of solution-processed zinc oxide (ZnO) in various environments is reported. The hydrogen-plasma-treated and untreated ZnO films exhibited ohmic behavior with room-temperature in-plane conductivity in a vacuum. When the untreated ZnO film was exposed to a dry oxygen environment, the conductivity rapidly decreased, and an oscillating current was observed. In certain cases, the thin film reversibly 'switched' between the high- and low-conductivity states. In contrast, the conductivity of the hydrogen-plasma-treated ZnO film remained nearly constant under different ambient conditions. We infer that hydrogen acts as a shallow donor, increasing the carrier concentration and generating oxygen vacancies by eliminating the surface contamination layer. Hence, atmospheric hydrogen plasma treatment could play a crucial role in stabilizing the conductivity of ZnO films. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Iron-based superconductors are under study for their potential for high-field applications due to their excellent superconducting properties such as low structural anisotropy, large upper critical fields and low field dependence of the critical current density. Between them, Fe(Se,Te) is simple to be synthesized and can be fabricated as a coated conductor through laser ablation on simple metallic templates. In order to make all the steps simple and fast, we have applied the spark plasma sintering technique to synthesize bulk Fe(Se,Te) to obtain quite dense polycrystals in a very short time. The resulting polycrystals are very well connected and show excellent superconducting properties, with a critical temperature onset of about 16 K. In addition, when used as targets for pulsed laser ablation, good thin films are obtained with a critical current density above 105 A cm−2 up to 16 T. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, we focus on a detailed study of the role of each component layer in the multilayer structure of a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) as well as the analysis of the effects that the deposition parameters of the thin films have on the performance of the structure. Various techniques including atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to investigate the effects of deposition parameters on the surface roughness and thickness of individual layers within the MTJ structure. Furthermore, this study investigates the influence of thin films thickness on the magnetoresistive properties of the MTJ structure, focusing on the free ferromagnetic layer and the barrier layer (MgO). Through systematic analysis and optimization of the deposition parameters, this study demonstrates a significant improvement in the tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) of the MTJ structure of 10% on average, highlighting the importance of precise control over thin films properties for enhancing device performance. In the present paper, composite thin films of barium strontium titanate (BaxSr1−xTiO3) with an acceptor modifier (magnesium oxide—MgO) were deposited on metal substrates (stainless steel type) using the sol–gel method. The composite thin films feature BaxSr1−xTiO3 ferroelectric solid solution as the matrix and MgO linear dielectric as the reinforcement, with MgO concentrations ranging from 1 to 5 mol%. Following thermal treatment at 650 °C, the films were analyzed for their impedance response. Experimental impedance spectra were modeled using the Kohlrausch–Williams–Watts function, revealing stretching parameters (β) in the range of approximately 0.78 to 0.89 and 0.56 to 0.90 for impedance and electric modulus formalisms, respectively. Notably, films modified with 3 mol% MgO exhibited the least stretched relaxation function. Employing the electric equivalent circuit method for data analysis, the "circle fit" analysis demonstrated an increase in capacitance from 2.97 × 10−12 F to 5.78 × 10−10 F with the incorporation of 3 mol% MgO into BST-based thin films. Further analysis based on Voigt, Maxwell, and ladder circuits revealed trends in resistance and capacitance components with varying MgO contents, suggesting non-Debye-type relaxation phenomena across all tested samples. In this report, micro-patterned silicon semiconductor photovoltaic cells have been proposed to improve the efficiency in various incident sunlight angles, using homeotropic liquid crystal polymers. The anisotropic liquid crystal precursor solution based on a reactive mesogen has good flowing characteristics. It can be evenly coated on the silicon solar cells' surface by a conventional spreading technique, such as spin coating. Once cured, the polymers exhibit asymmetric transmittance properties. The optical retardation characteristics of the coated polymer films can be eventually determined by the applicable coating and curing parameters during the processes. The birefringence of light then influences the optical path and the divergence of any encountered sunlight. This allows more photons to enter the active semiconductor layers for optical absorption, resulting in an increase in the photon-to-electron conversion, and thus improving the photovoltaic cell efficiency. This new design is straightforward and could allow various patterns to be created for scientific development. The experimental results have evidenced that the energy conversion efficiency could be improved by 2–3% for the silicon photovoltaic cells, under direct sunlight or at no inclination, when the liquid crystal polymer precursor solution is prepared at 5%. In addition, the efficiency could be much more significantly improved to 14–16% when the angle is inclined to 45°. The unique patterned liquid crystal polymer thin films provide enhanced energy conversion efficiency for silicon photovoltaic cells. This study involved direct doping of In2O3 into silicon carbide (SiC) powder, resulting in 8.0 at% In-doped SiC powder. Subsequently, heating at 500 °C was performed to form a target, followed by the utilization of electron beam (e-beam) technology to deposit the In-doped SiC thin films with the thickness of approximately 189.8 nm. The first breakthrough of this research was the successful deposition of using e-beam technology. The second breakthrough involved utilizing various tools to analyze the physical and electrical properties of In-doped SiC thin films. Hall effect measurement was used to measure the resistivity, mobility, and carrier concentration and confirm its n-type semiconductor nature. The uniform dispersion of In ions in SiC was as confirmed by electron microscopy energy-dispersive spectroscopy and secondary ion mass spectrometry analyses. The Tauc Plot method was employed to determine the Eg values of pure SiC and In-doped SiC thin films. Semiconductor parameter analyzer was used to measure the conductivity and the I-V characteristics of devices in In-doped SiC thin films. Furthermore, the third finding demonstrated that In2O3-doped SiC thin films exhibited remarkable current density. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Gaussian-resolved spectra further confirmed a significant relationship between conductivity and oxygen vacancy concentration. Lastly, depositing these In-doped SiC thin films onto p-type silicon substrates etched with buffered oxide etchant resulted in the formation of heterojunction p-n junction. This junction exhibited the rectifying characteristics of a diode, with sample current values in the vicinity of 102 mA, breakdown voltage at approximately −5.23 V, and open-circuit voltage around 1.56 V. The value of two-dimensional (2D) materials in printed electronics has been gradually explored, and the rheological properties of 2D material dispersions are very different for various printing technologies. Understanding the rheological properties of 2D material dispersions plays a vital role in selecting the optimal manufacturing technology. Inkjet printing is suitable for small nanosheet sizes and low solution viscosity, and it has a significant advantage in developing nanosheet inks because of its masklessness, high efficiency, and high precision. In this work, we selected 2D Ti0.8Co0.2O2 nanosheets, which can be synthesized in large quantities by the liquid phase exfoliation technique; investigated the effects of nanosheet particle size, solution concentration on the rheological properties of the dispersion; and obtained the optimal printing processing method of the dispersion as inkjet printing. The ultrathin Ti0.8Co0.2O2 nanosheet films were prepared by inkjet printing, and their magnetic characteristics were compared with those of Ti0.8Co0.2O2 powder. The films prepared by inkjet printing exhibited long-range ordering, maintaining the nanosheet powders' paramagnetic characteristics. Our work underscored the potential of inkjet printing as a promising method for fabricating precisely controlled thin films using 2D materials, with applications spanning electronics, sensors, and catalysis. The undoped and tungsten (W)-doped vanadium dioxide (VO2) thin films were prepared by electron beam evaporation associated with ion-beam-assisted deposition (IAD). The influence of different W-doped contents (3–5%) on the electrical, optical, structural, and thermo-mechanical properties of VO2 thin films was investigated experimentally. Spectral transmittance results showed that with the increase in W-doped contents, the transmittance in the visible light range (400–750 nm) decreases from 60.2% to 53.9%, and the transmittance in the infrared wavelength range (2.5 μm to 5.5 μm) drops from 55.8% to 15.4%. As the W-doped content increases, the residual stress in the VO2 thin film decreases from −0.276 GPa to −0.238 GPa, but the surface roughness increases. For temperature-dependent spectroscopic measurements, heating the VO2 thin films from 30 °C to 100 °C showed the most significant change in transmittance for the 5% W-doped VO2 thin film. When the heating temperature exceeds 55 °C, the optical transmittance drops significantly, and the visible light transmittance drops by about 11%. Electrochromism has emerged as a pivotal technology in the pursuit of energy efficiency and environmental sustainability, spurring significant research efforts aimed at the creation of advanced electrochromic devices. Most electrochromic materials are used for smart window applications. However, current electrochromic materials have been applied to new energy vehicles, cell phone back covers, AR glasses, and so on. More application scenarios put forward more requirements for the color of the colored states. Choosing the right color change in the application will be the trend in the future. In this work, tungsten trioxide (WO3) thin films were prepared by adjusting the in situ heating temperature. WO3 with a crystalline structure showed excellent cyclic stability (5000 cycles), electrochromic performance (ΔT = 77.7% at 633 nm, CE = 37.1 cm2/C), relatively fast bleaching/coloring speed (20.0 s/19.4 s), and the darkest coloring effect (L* = 29.32, a* = 7.41, b* = −22.12 for the colored state). Thermoelectric gas sensor (THGS) devices with catalysts and Si0.8Ge0.2 thin films of different boron doping levels of 1018, 1019, and 1020 cm−3 were fabricated, and their transport properties are investigated. SiGe films were deposited on Si3N4/SiO2 multilayers on Si substrates using low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) and thermally annealed at 1050 °C. The Seebeck coefficients of the SiGe films were increased after thermal annealing, ranging from 191 to 275 μV/K at temperatures of 74 to 468 °C in air, and reaching the highest power factor of 6.78 × 10−4 W/mK2 at 468 °C. The thermal conductivity of the SiGe films varied from 2.4 to 3.0 W/mK at 25 °C. The THGS detection performance was tested for the H2 gas in air from 0.01 to 1.0%, and compared to the thermoelectric properties of the SiGe films. The high-temperature annealing treatment process was successful in enhancing the thermoelectric performance of both the SiGe films and sensor devices, achieving the best THGS performance with the sensor device fabricated from the annealed SiGe film with 1018 cm−3 boron-doped Si0.8Ge0.2. In the paper, an equation with two delay times (dual-phase lag Equation (DPLE)) in a version that takes into account the dependence of thermophysical parameters (volumetric specific heat and thermal conductivity) on temperature is considered. In particular, an analysis of the sensitivity of transient temperature field in relation to disturbances in delay times (the relaxation and thermalization times) is performed. The sensitivity model concerns the process of heating an ultrathin metal layer with a laser beam. First, the equation with two delay times in the case of temperature-dependent thermophysical parameters is presented. Next, the sensitivity equations with respect to delay times are derived using the direct method. The algorithms for solving the basic and sensitivity tasks are also briefly presented. At the stage of computations, an authorial program based on the implicit scheme of a finite-difference method is developed. In the final part of the paper, examples of numerical solutions (for layers made from gold and nickel) are presented. The research conducted here shows that disturbances in the temperature field are clearly visible and depend, on the one hand, on the thermophysical parameters of the material, and on the other hand, on the intensity of heating with an external heat source. Fluconazole (FZ) is a potential antifungal compound for treating superficial and systemic candidiasis. However, the use of conventional oral drug products has some limitations. The development of buccal film may be a potential alternative to oral formulations for FZ delivery. The present study involved the development of novel FZ-loaded solid lipid nanoparticles (FZ-SLNs) in pectin solutions and the investigation of their particle characteristics. The particle sizes of the obtained FZ-SLNs were in the nanoscale range. To produce pectin films with FZ-SLNs, four formulations were selected based on the small particle size of FZ-SLNs and their suitable polydispersity index. The mean particle sizes of all chosen FZ-SLNs formulations did not exceed 131.7 nm, and the mean polydispersity index of each formulation was less than 0.5. The properties of films containing FZ-SLNs were then assessed. The preparation of all FZ-SLN-loaded pectin films provided the mucoadhesive matrices. The evaluation of mechanical properties unveiled the influence of particle size variation in FZ-SLNs on the integrity of the film. The Fourier-transform infrared spectra indicated that hydrogen bonds could potentially form between the pectin-based matrix and the constituents of FZ-SLNs. The differential scanning calorimetry thermogram of each pectin film with FZ-SLNs revealed that the formulation was thermally stable and behaved in a solid state at 37 °C. According to a drug release study, a sustained drug release pattern with a burst in the initial stage for all films may be advantageous for reducing the lag period of drug release. All prepared films with FZ-SLNs provided a sustained release of FZ over 6 h. The films containing FZ-SLNs with a small particle size provided good permeability across the porcine mucosa. Block copolymer (BCP) surfaces permit an exquisite level of nanoscale control in biomolecular assemblies solely based on self-assembly. Owing to this, BCP-based biomolecular assembly represents a much-needed, new paradigm for creating nanobiosensors and nanobiomaterials without the need for costly and time-consuming fabrication steps. Research endeavors in the BCP nanobiotechnology field have led to stimulating results that can promote our current understanding of biomolecular interactions at a solid interface to the never-explored size regimes comparable to individual biomolecules. Encouraging research outcomes have also been reported for the stability and activity of biomolecules bound on BCP thin film surfaces. A wide range of single and multicomponent biomolecules and BCP systems has been assessed to substantiate the potential utility in practical applications as next-generation nanobiosensors, nanobiodevices, and biomaterials. To this end, this Review highlights pioneering research efforts made in the BCP nanobiotechnology area. The discussions will be focused on those works particularly pertaining to nanoscale surface assembly of functional biomolecules, biomolecular interaction properties unique to nanoscale polymer interfaces, functionality of nanoscale surface-bound biomolecules, and specific examples in biosensing. Systems involving the incorporation of biomolecules as one of the blocks in BCPs, i.e., DNA–BCP hybrids, protein–BCP conjugates, and isolated BCP micelles of bioligand carriers used in drug delivery, are outside of the scope of this Review. Looking ahead, there awaits plenty of exciting research opportunities to advance the research field of BCP nanobiotechnology by capitalizing on the fundamental groundwork laid so far for the biomolecular interactions on BCP surfaces. In order to better guide the path forward, key fundamental questions yet to be addressed by the field are identified. This study investigates polyethylene glycol (PEG) homopolymer thin film adsorption on gold surfaces of controlled surface chemistry. The conformational states of physisorbed PEG are analyzed through polarization modulation infrared reflection–absorption spectrometry (PM-IRRAS). The PM-IRRAS principle is based on specific optical selection rules allowing the detection of surface-specific FTIR response of thin polymer films on the basis of differential reflectivity at the polymer/substrate interface for p- and s-polarized light. The intensification of the electric field generated at the PEG/substrate interface for p-polarized IR light in comparison with s-polarized light permits the analysis of PEG chain anisotropy and conformational changes induced by the adsorption. Results showed that PEG adsorbs on model substrates having a rather hydrophilic character in a way that the PEG chains spread parallel to the surface. In the case of a very hydrophilic substrate, the adsorbed PEG chains are in a stable thermodynamic state which allows them to arrange and crystallize as stacked crystalline lamellae after adsorption. The surface topography and morphology of the PEG thin films were also investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). While in the bulk state, PEG crystallizes in the form of large spherulites; on substrates whose adsorption is favored by surface chemistry, PEG crystallizes in the form of stacked lamellae with a thickness equal to 20 nm. Nanoporous gold (np-Au) has found its use in applications ranging from catalysis to biosensing, where pore morphology plays a critical role in performance. While the morphology evolution of bulk np-Au has been widely studied, knowledge about its thin-film form is limited. This work hypothesizes that the mechanical compliance of the thin film substrate can play a critical role in the morphology evolution. Via experimental and finite-element-analysis approaches, we investigate the morphological variation in np-Au thin films deposited on compliant silicone (PDMS) substrates of a range of thicknesses anchored on rigid glass supports and compare those to the morphology of np-Au deposited on glass. More macroscopic (10 s to 100 s of microns) cracks and discrete islands form in the np-Au films on PDMS compared to on glass. Conversely, uniformly distributed microscopic (100 s of nanometers) cracks form in greater numbers in the np-Au films on glass than those on PDMS, with the cracks located within the discrete islands. The np-Au films on glass also show larger ligament and pore sizes, possibly due to higher residual stresses compared to the np-Au/PDMS films. The effective elastic modulus of the substrate layers decreases with increasing PDMS thickness, resulting in secondary np-Au morphology effects, including a reduction in macroscopic crack-to-crack distance, an increase in microscopic crack coverage, and a widening of the microscopic cracks. However, changes in the ligament/pore widths with PDMS thickness are negligible, allowing for independent optimization for cracking. Thermoelectric power can convert heat and electricity directly and reversibly. Low-dimensional thermoelectric materials, particularly thin films, have been considered a breakthrough for separating electronic and thermal transport relationships. In this study, a series of Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 thin films with thicknesses of 0.125, 0.25, 0.5, and 1 μm have been fabricated by RF sputtering for the study of thickness effects on thermoelectric properties. We demonstrated that microstructure (texture) changes highly correlate with the growth thickness in the films, and equilibrium annealing significantly improves the thermoelectric performance, resulting in a remarkable enhancement in the thermoelectric performance. Consequently, the 0.5 μm thin films achieve an exceptional power factor of 18.1 μWcm−1K−2 at 400 K. Furthermore, we utilize a novel method that involves exfoliating a nanosized film and cutting with a focused ion beam, enabling precise in-plane thermal conductivity measurements through the 3ω method. We obtain the in-plane thermal conductivity as low as 0.3 Wm−1K−1, leading to a maximum ZT of 1.86, nearing room temperature. A batch of ZnO thin films, pure and doped with molybdenum (up to 2 mol %), were prepared using the spray pyrolysis technique on glass and silicon substrates. The effect of molybdenum concentration on the morphology, structure and optical properties of the films was investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results show a wurtzite polycrystalline crystal structure. The average crystallite size increases from 30 to 80 nm with increasing molybdenum content. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images demonstrate a smooth and homogeneous surface with densely spaced nanocrystalline grains. The number of nuclei increases, growing over the entire surface of the substrate with uniform grains, when the molybdenum concentration is increased to 2 mol %. The estimated root mean square (RMS) roughness values for the undoped and doped with 1 mol % and 2 mol % of ZnO thin films, defined by atomic force microscopy (AFM), are 6.12, 23.54 and 23.83 nm, respectively. Bismuth ferrite BiFeO3 (BFO)-based ferroelectrics have great potential as inorganic perovskite-like oxides for future solar cells applications due to their unique physical properties. In this work, La and Mn co-doped BFO thin films with compositions Bi0.9La0.1(Fe1−xMnx)O3 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15) (denoted as BLF, BLFM5, BLFM10, BLFM15, respectively) were prepared via a sol–gel technique on indium tin oxide (ITO) glass. All the films are monophasic, showing good crystallinity. The optical bandgap Eg was found to decrease monotonously with an increase in the Mn doping amount. Compared with other compositions, the BLFM5 sample exhibits a better crystallinity and less oxygen vacancies as indicated by XRD and XPS measurements, thereby achieving a better J–V performance. Based on BLFM5 as the light absorbing layer, the ITO/ZnO/BLFM5/Pt and ITO/ZnO/BLFM5/NiO/Pt heterostructure devices were designed and characterized. It was found that the introduction of the ZnO layer increases both the open circuit voltage (Voc) and the short circuit current density (Jsc) with Voc = 90.2 mV and Jsc = 6.90 μA/cm2 for the Pt/ BLFM5/ZnO/ITO device. However, the insertion of the NiO layer reduces both Voc and Jsc, which is attributed to the weakened built-in electric field at the NiO/BLFM5 interface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Amorphous thin films can be applied to increase the anti-corrosion ability of critical components. Atomized FeCrNiMoCSiB powders were hot-pressed into a disc target for R. F. magnetron sputtering on a 316L substrate to upgrade its corrosion resistance. The XRD spectrum confirmed that the film deposited by R. F. magnetron sputtering was amorphous. The corrosion resistance of the amorphous film was evaluated in a 1 M HCl solution with potentiodynamic polarization tests, and the results were contrasted with those of a high-velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) coating and 316L, IN 600, and C 276 alloys. The results indicated that the film hardness and elastic modulus, as measured using a nanoindenter, were 11.1 and 182 GPa, respectively. The principal stresses in two normal directions of the amorphous film were about 60 MPa and in tension. The corrosion resistance of the amorphous film was much greater than that of the other samples, which showed a broad passivation region, even in a 1 M HCl solution. Although the amorphous film showed high corrosion resistance, the original pinholes in the film were weak sites to initiate corrosion pits. After polarization tests, large, deep trenches were seen in the corroded 316L substrate; numerous fine patches in the IN 600 alloy and grain boundary corrosion in the C276 alloy were observed. The film thickness, temperature, substrate and doping dependence of the phonon energy ω and damping γ , as well as the electrical conductivity, of pure and Sr-doped LaMnO3 thin films near the phase transition temperature T N are investigated using a microscopic model and the Green's function technique. Due to the strong spin–phonon interaction, there appears a kink at T N in the temperature dependence of ω (T) and γ (T) . The softening and hardening of the ω = 495 cm−1 (A1g) and ω = 614 cm−1 (B2g) modes is explained by the different sign of the anharmonic spin–phonon interaction constant R. The damping increases with T for both cases because it is proportional to R 2 . ω decreases whereas γ increases with an increasing Sr concentration. This is due to the strain caused by the difference between the ionic radii of the La and Sr ions. The film thickness dependence is also considered. ω and γ increase strongly with the decreasing film thickness. The electrical conductivity is enhanced after the doping of the LMO thin films with Sr, which could be used for energy storage applications. Polypyrrole (PPy)-capped silver nanowire (Ag NW) nanomaterials (core–shell rod-shaped Ag NW@PPy) were synthesized using a one-port suspension polymerization technique. The thickness of the PPy layer on the 50 nm thickness/15 μm length Ag NW was effectively controlled to 10, 40, 50, and 60 nm. Thin films cast from one-dimensional conductive Ag NW@PPy formed a three-dimensional (3D) conductive porous network structure and provided excellent electrochemical performance. The 3D Ag NW@PPy network can significantly reduce the internal resistance of the electrode and maintain structural stability. As a result, a high specific capacitance of 625 F/g at a scan rate of 1 mV/s was obtained from the 3D porous Ag NW@PPy composite film. The cycling performance over a long period exceeding 10,000 cycles was also evaluated. We expect that our core–shell-structured Ag NW@PPy composites and their 3D porous structure network films can be applied as electrochemical materials for the design and manufacturing of supercapacitors and other energy storage devices. Photoelectrocatalytic approaches show promise for contaminate removal in wastewater through redox reactions. However, the direct treatment of very low concentration heavy metals is a challenging task. Copper bismuth oxide is considered as a potential photocathode material due to its appropriate bandgap width and excellent light absorption properties. In this work, we utilize copper bismuth oxide photoelectrodes with micrometer-scale pores to achieve the efficient and complete reduction of micromolar-level hexavalent chromium(VI) in wastewater. In a continuous 180 min experiment, the reduction rate of 5 µM hexavalent chromium reached 97%, which is an order lower than the drinking standard. Such a process was facilitated by the unique hierarchical microstructure of the oxide thin film and the porous morphology. On the other hand, the structural evolution during the operation was analyzed. A surface passivation was observed, suggesting the possible long-term practical application of this material. This study serves as an important reference for the application of photoelectrocatalysis in addressing Cr(VI) pollution in wastewater, with implications for improving water quality and environmental protection. In this study, a perovskite-based mixed cation/anion ultraviolet photodetector with an added halide material is fabricated using perovskite combined with an ABX_3 structure. Mixed cation/anion perovskite thin films of MAPbI3/FABr are manufactured through a relatively simple solution process and employed as light-absorption layers. In the produced thin film, SnO2–sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate acts as an electron transport layer and spiro-OMeTAD acts as a hole injection layer. Compared to a single cation/anion perovskite, the fabricated device exhibits phase stability and optoelectronic properties, and demonstrates a responsivity of 72.2 mA/W and a detectability of 4.67 × 1013 Jones. In addition, the films show an external quantum efficiency of 56%. This suggests that mixed cation/anion films can replace single cation/anion perovskite films. Hybrid organic–inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are receiving huge attention owing to their marvelous advantages, such as low cost, high efficiency, and superior optoelectronics characteristics. Despite their promising potential, charge-carrier dynamics at the interfaces are still ambiguous, causing carrier recombination and hindering carrier transport, thus lowering the open-circuit voltages (Voc) of PSCs. To unveil this ambiguous phenomenon, we intensively performed various optoelectronic measurements to investigate the impact of interfacial charge-carrier dynamics of PSCs under various light intensities. This is because the charge density can exhibit different mobility and charge transport properties depending on the characteristics of the charge transport layers. We explored the influence of the hole transport layer (HTL) by investigating charge transport properties using photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved (TRPL) to unveil interfacial recombination phenomena and optoelectronic characteristics. We specifically investigated the impact of various thicknesses of HTLs, such as 2,2′,7,7′-tetrakis[N,N-di(4-methoxyphenyl)amino]-9,9′-spirobifluorene (spiro-OMeTAD), and poly(triaryl)amine (PTAA), on FA0.83MA0.17Pb(Br0.05I0.95)3 perovskite films. The HTLs are coated on perovskite film by altering the HTL's concentration and using F4-TCNQ and 4-tert-butylpyridine (tBP) and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSi) as dopants both for spiro-OMeTAD and PTAA. These HTLs diversified the charge concentration gradients in the absorption layer, thus leading to different recombination rates based on the employed laser intensities. At the same time, the generated charge carriers are rapidly transferred to the interface of the HTL/absorption layer and accumulate holes at the interface because of inefficient capacitance and mobility differences caused by differently doped HTL thicknesses. Notably, the charge concentration gradient is low at lower light intensities and did not accumulate holes at the HTL/absorption layer interface, even though they have high charge mobility. Sputtering of silicon in a He magnetron discharge (MS) has been reported as a bottom-up procedure to obtain He-charged silicon films (i.e., He nanobubbles encapsulated in a silicon matrix). The incorporation of heavier noble gases is demonstrated in this work with a synergistic effect, producing increased Ne and Ar incorporations when using He–Ne and He–Ar gas mixtures in the MS process. Microstructural and chemical characterizations are reported using ion beam analysis (IBA) and scanning and transmission electron microscopies (SEM and TEM). In addition to gas incorporation, He promotes the formation of larger nanobubbles. In the case of Ne, high-resolution X-ray photoelectron and absorption spectroscopies (XPS and XAS) are reported, with remarkable dependence of the Ne 1s photoemission and the Ne K-edge absorption on the nanobubble's size and composition. The gas (He, Ne and Ar)-charged thin films are proposed as "solid" targets for the characterization of spectroscopic properties of noble gases in a confined state without the need for cryogenics or high-pressure anvils devices. The cubic zirconia (ZrO2) is attractive for a broad range of applications. However, at room temperature, the cubic phase needs to be stabilized. The most studied stabilization method is the addition of the oxides of trivalent metals, such as Sc2O3. Another method is the stabilization of the cubic phase in nanostructures—nanopowders or nanocrystallites of pure zirconia. We studied the relationship between the size factor and the dopant concentration range for the formation and stabilization of the cubic phase in scandium-stabilized zirconia (ScSZ) films. The thin films of (ZrO2)1−x(Sc2O3)x, with x from 0 to 0.2, were deposited on room-temperature substrates by reactive direct current magnetron co-sputtering. The crystal structure of films with an average crystallite size of 85 Å was cubic at Sc2O3 content from 6.5 to 17.5 mol%, which is much broader than the range of 8–12 mol.% of the conventional deposition methods. The sputtering of ScSZ films on hot substrates resulted in a doubling of crystallite size and a decrease in the cubic phase range to 7.4–11 mol% of Sc2O3 content. This confirmed that the size of crystallites is one of the determining factors for expanding the concentration range for forming and stabilizing the cubic phase of ScSZ films. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Off-stoichiometric NixFe3−xO4 ultrathin films (x < 2.1) with varying Ni content x and thickness 16 (±2) nm were grown on MgO(001) by reactive molecular beam epitaxy. Synchrotron-based high-resolution X-ray diffraction measurements reveal vertical compressive strain for all films, resulting from a lateral pseudomorphic adaption of the film to the substrate lattice without any strain relaxation. Complete crystallinity with smooth interfaces and surfaces is obtained independent of the Ni content x. For x < 1 an expected successive conversion from Fe3O4 to NiFe2O4 is observed, whereas local transformation into NiO structures is observed for films with Ni content x > 1. However, angle-resolved hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements indicate homogeneous cationic distributions without strictly separated phases independent of the Ni content, while X-ray absorption spectroscopy shows that also for x > 1, not all Fe 2 + cations are substituted by Ni 2 + cations. The ferrimagnetic behavior, as observed by superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry, is characterized by decreasing saturation magnetization due to the formation of antiferromagnetic NiO parts. Cu2Sn1-xGexS3 (CTGS) is a compound composed of relatively abundant elements in the crust of the earth. The band gap of CTGS can be tuned by substituting elements at the Sn and Ge sites, making it an attractive material for low-environmental-impact solar cells. In this study, CTGS thin films were fabricated with a controlled [Ge]/([Ge] + [Sn]) composition ratio (x) by combining the co-evaporation method and sulfurization in an infrared furnace. Furthermore, the effect of Na on the CTGS and changes in the solar cell properties were investigated by stacking and sulfurizing NaF on the precursor fabricated using the co-evaporation method. As a result, CTGS with varying x was successfully fabricated by varying the deposition time of the Cu2GeS3 layer using co-evaporation. Additionally, CTGS prepared by doping with Na showed enlarged CTGS crystals compared to Na-free CTGS. In this study, a detailed structural characterization of epitaxial La 0.6 Sr 0.4 CoO 3 − δ (LSC) films grown in (100), (110), and (111) orientations was conducted. LSC is a model air electrode material in solid oxide fuel and electrolysis cells and understanding the correlation of bulk structure and catalytic activity is essential for the design of future electrode materials. Thin films were grown on single crystals of the perovskite material La 0.95 Sr 0.05 Ga 0.95 Mg 0.05 O 3 − δ cut in three different directions. This enabled an examination of structural details at the atomic scale for a realistic material combination in solid oxide cells. The investigation involved the application of atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy to explore the distinct properties of these thin films. Interestingly, ordering phenomena in both cationic as well as anionic sublattices were found, despite the fact that the thin films were never at higher temperatures than 600 °C. Cationic ordering was found in spherical precipitates, whereas the ordering of oxygen vacancies led to the partial transition to brownmillerite in all three orientations. Our results indicate a very high oxygen vacancy concentration in all three thin films. In this study, we investigate the changes in the crystalline structure of MBE-deposited SrTiO3 layers on Si with different deviations from Sr/Ti stoichiometry as deposited but also after annealing at high temperatures (>600 °C). We show that as-grown 15 nm thick non-stochiometric SrTiO3 layers present surprisingly lower FWHM values of the (002) omega diffraction peak compared to fully stoichiometric layers of similar thickness. This can misleadingly point to superior crystalline quality of such non-stochiometric layers. However, thermal post-deposition anneals of these layers at temperatures up to 850 °C in oxygen show strong detrimental effects on the crystalline structure, surface and interface with the Si (001) substrate. On the contrary, the post-deposition anneals applied to the stoichiometric samples strongly improve the physical, optical and electrical properties of the epitaxial SrTiO3 thin films. The pursuit of p-type semiconductors has garnered considerable attention in academia and industry. Among the potential candidates, copper iodide (CuI) stands out as a highly promising p-type material due to its conductivity, cost-effectiveness, and low environmental impact. CuI can be employed to create thin films with >80% transparency within the visible range (400–750 nm) and utilizing various low-temperature, scalable deposition techniques. This review summarizes the deposition techniques for CuI as a hole-transport material and their performance in perovskite solar cells, thin-film transistors, and light-emitting diodes using diverse processing methods. The preparation methods of making thin films are divided into two categories: wet and neat methods. In order to improve the preparation efficiency, quality stability, and large-area preparation of superhydrophobic thin films, a roll-to-roll continuous micro–nano imprinting method for the efficient preparation of superhydrophobic polymer films is proposed. A wear-resistant mold roller with hierarchical microstructure is prepared by wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM). The rheological filling model is constructed for revealing the forming mechanism of superhydrophobic polymer films during continuous micro/nano imprinting. The effects of imprinting temperature, rolling speed and the surface texture size of the template on the surface texture formation rate of polymer films are analyzed. The experimental results show that, compared with other process methods, the template processed by WEDM shows excellent wear resistance. Moreover, the optimal micro/nano imprinting parameters are the mold temperature of 190 °C (corresponding film temperature of 85 ± 5 °C), rolling speed of 3 rpm and roller gap of 0.1 mm. The maximum contact angle of the polymer film is 154°. In addition, the superhydrophobic polymer thin film has been proven to have good self-cleaning and anti-icing performance. Amorphous alloys or metallic glasses (MGs) thin films have attracted extensive attention in various fields due to their unique functional properties. Here, we use in situ heating transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to investigate the thermal stability and crystallization behavior of Pd-Au-Si thin films prepared by a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method. Upon heating treatment inside a TEM, we trace the structural changes in the Pd-Au-Si thin films through directly recording high-resolution images and diffraction patterns at different temperatures. TEM observations reveal that the Pd-Au-Si thin films started to nucleate with small crystalline embryos uniformly distributed in the glassy matrix upon approaching the glass transition temperature T g = 625 K , and subsequently, the growth of crystalline nuclei into sub-10 nm Pd-Si nanocrystals commenced. Upon further increasing the temperature to 673 K , the thin films transformed to micro-sized patches of stacking-faulty lamellae that further crystallized into Pd 9 Si 2 and Pd 3 Si intermetallic compounds. Interestingly, with prolonged thermal heating at elevated temperatures, the Pd 9 Si 2 transformed to Pd 3 Si . Simultaneously, the solute Au atoms initially dissolved in glassy alloys and eventually precipitated out of the Pd 9 Si 2 and Pd 3 Si intermetallics, forming nearly spherical Au nanocrystals. Our TEM results reveal the unique thermal stability and crystallization processes of the PLD-prepared Pd-Au-Si thin films as well as demonstrate a possibility of producing a large quantity of pure nanocrystals out of amorphous solids for various applications. High-quality perovskite thin films are typically produced via solvent engineering, which results in efficient perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Nevertheless, the use of hazardous solvents like precursor solvents (N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), dimethylformamide (DMF), gamma-butyrolactone (GBL)) and antisolvents (chlorobenzene (CB), dibutyl ether (DEE), diethyl ether (Et2O), etc.) is crucial to the preparation of perovskite solutions and the control of perovskite thin film crystallization. The consumption of hazardous solvents poses an imminent threat to both the health of manufacturers and the environment. Consequently, before PSCs are commercialized, the current concerns about the toxicity of solvents must be addressed. In this study, we fabricated highly efficient planar PSCs using a novel, environmentally friendly method. Initially, we employed a greener solvent engineering approach that substituted the hazardous precursor solvents with an environmentally friendly solvent called triethyl phosphate (TEP). In the following stage, we fabricated perovskite thin films without the use of an antisolvent by employing a two-step procedure. Of all the greener techniques used to fabricate PSCs, the FTO/SnO2/MAFAPbI3/spiro-OMeTAD planar device configuration yielded the highest PCE of 20.98%. The magnetization mechanism of Co-doped BaTiO3 ultrathin films is a subject of debate, which results in difficulties with the design of new multiferroics based on BaTiO3 matrixes. With the aid of a first-principles approach, it was observed that when the interstitial site and Ti vacancy were filled with Co, the configuration behaved in a nonmagnetic manner, indicating the significance of the Co content. Moreover, in the case of Co substituting two neighboring Ti atoms, when a direct current field was applied in the [100] direction, the magnetic domains excluding those in the [100], [010], and [001] directions were directed away. Further, the magnetoelectric constant was evaluated at ~449.3 mV/cmOe, showing strong magnetoelectric coupling at room temperature. Clearly, our study indicates that strict control of Ba, Ti, O, and Co stoichiometry can induce an electric and magnetic field conversion in two-dimensional BaTiO3 and may provide a new candidate for single-phase multiferroics for application in next-generation multifunctional devices. Due to its excellent electrical conductivity, high transparency in the visible spectrum, and exceptional chemical stability, indium tin oxide (ITO) has become a crucial material in the fields of optoelectronics and nanotechnology. This article provides a thorough analysis of growing ITO thin films with various thicknesses to study the impact of thickness on their electrical, optical, and physical properties for solar-cell applications. ITO was prepared through radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering using argon gas with no alteration in temperature or changes in substrate heating, followed with annealing in a tube furnace under inert conditions. An investigation of the influence of thickness on the optical, electrical, and physical properties of the films was conducted. We found that the best thickness for ITO thin films was 100 nm in terms of optical, electrical, and physical properties. To gain full comprehension of the impact on electrical properties, the different samples were characterized using a four-point probe and, interestingly, we found a high conductivity in the range of 1.8–2 × 106 S/m, good resistivity that did not exceed 1–2 × 10−6 Ωm, and a sheet resistance lower than 16 Ω sq−1. The transparency values found using a spectrophotometer reached values beyond 85%, which indicates the high purity of the thin films. Atomic force microscopy indicated a smooth morphology with low roughness values for the films, indicating an adequate transitioning of the charges on the surface. Scanning electron microscopy was used to study the actual thicknesses and the morphology, through which we found no cracks or fractures, which implied excellent deposition and annealing. The X-ray diffraction microscopy results showed a high purity of the crystals, as the peaks (222), (400), (440), and (622) of the crystallographic plane reflections were dominant, which confirmed the existence of the faced-center cubic lattice of ITO. L-poly(lactic acid), poly(3-hydroxybutyrate), and poly-hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate are biodegradable polymers that can be obtained from renewable biomass sources. The aim of this study was to develop three types of environmentally friendly film biocomposites of altered microstructure by combining each of the above-mentioned polymers with cellulose nanocrystal fillers and further processing the resulting materials via space-confined solvent vapor annealing. Cellulose was previously obtained from renewable biomass and further converted to cellulose nanocrystals by hydrolysis with the lactic acid. The solutions of biodegradable polymers were spin-coated onto solid substrates before and after the addition of cellulose nanocrystals. The obtained thin film composites were further processed via space-confined solvent vapor annealing to eventually favor their crystallization and, thus, to alter the final microstructure. Indeed, atomic force microscopy studies have revealed that the presence of cellulose nanocrystals within a biodegradable polymer matrix promoted the formation of large crystalline structures exhibiting fractal-, spherulitic- or needle-like morphologies. In recent years, antimony sulfide (Sb2S3) has been investigated as a photovoltaic absorber material due to its suitable absorber coefficient, direct band gap, extinction coefficient, earth-abundant, and environmentally friendly constituents. Therefore, this work proposes Sb2S3 film preparation by an effective two-step process using a new graphite box design and sulfur distribution, which has a high repeatability level and can be scalable. First, an Sb thin film was deposited using the RF-Sputtering technique, and after that, the samples were annealed with elemental sulfur into a graphite box, varying the sulfurization time from 20 to 50 min. The structural, optical, morphological, and chemical characteristics of the resulting thin films were analyzed. Results reveal the method's effectivity and the best properties were obtained for the sample sulfurized during 40 min. This Sb2S3 thin film presents an orthorhombic crystalline structure, elongated grains, a band gap of 1.69 eV, a crystallite size of 15.25 Å, and a nearly stoichiometric composition. In addition, the formation of a p-n junction was achieved by depositing silver back contact on the Glass/FTO/CdS/Sb2S3 structure. Therefore, the graphite box design has been demonstrated to be functional to obtain Sb2S3 by a two-step process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CuGaO2 thin films were deposited using the RF magnetron sputtering technique using Cu2O and Ga2O3 targets. The films were deposited at room temperature onto a quartz slide. The sputtering power of Cu2O remained constant at 50 W, while the sputtering power of Ga2O3 was systematically varied from 150 W to 200 W. The films were subsequently subjected to annealing at temperatures of 850 °C and 900 °C in a nitrogen atmosphere for a duration of 5 h. XRD analysis on films deposited with a Ga2O3 sputtering power of 175 W annealed at 900 °C revealed the development of nearly single-phase delafossite CuGaO2 thin films. SEM images of films annealed at 900 °C showed an increasing trend in grain size with a change in sputtering power level. Optical studies performed on the film revealed a transmission of 84.97% and indicated a band gap of approximately 3.27 eV. The film exhibited a refractive index of 2.5 within the wavelength range of 300 to 450 nm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A typical piezoelectric energy harvester is a bimorph cantilever with two layers of piezoelectric material on both sides of a flexible substrate. Piezoelectric layers of lead-based materials, typically lead zirconate titanate, have been mainly used due to their outstanding piezoelectric properties. However, due to lead toxicity and environmental problems, there is a need to replace them with environmentally benign materials. Here, our main efforts were focused on the preparation of hafnium-doped barium titanate (BaHfxTi1−xO3; BHT) sol–gel materials. The original process developed makes it possible to obtain a highly concentrated sol without strong organic complexing agents. Sol aging and concentration can be controlled to obtain a time-stable sol for a few months at room temperature, with desired viscosity and colloidal sizes. Densified bulk materials obtained from this optimized sol are compared with a solid-state synthesis, and both show good electromechanical properties: their thickness coupling factor kt values are around 53% and 47%, respectively, and their converse piezoelectric coefficient d 33 ∗ values are around 420 and 330 pm/V, respectively. According to the electromechanical properties, the theoretical behavior in a bimorph configuration can be simulated to predict the resonance and anti-resonance frequencies and the corresponding output power values to help to design the final device. In the present case, the bimorph configuration based on BHT sol–gel material is designed to harvest ambient vibrations at low frequency (<200 Hz). It gives a maximum normalized volumetric power density of 0.03 µW/mm3/Hz/g2 at 154 Hz under an acceleration of 0.05 m/s2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Kesterite-based copper zinc tin sulfide (CZTS) and copper zinc tin selenide (CZTSe) thin films have attracted considerable attention as promising materials for sustainable and cost-effective thin-film solar cells. However, the successful integration of these materials into photovoltaic devices is hindered by the coexistence of secondary phases, which can significantly affect device performance and stability. This review article provides a comprehensive overview of recent progress and challenges in controlling secondary phases in kesterite CZTS and CZTSe thin films. Drawing from relevant studies, we discuss state-of-the-art strategies and techniques employed to mitigate the formation of secondary phases. These include a range of deposition methods, such as electrodeposition, sol-gel, spray pyrolysis, evaporation, pulsed laser deposition, and sputtering, each presenting distinct benefits in enhancing phase purity. This study highlights the importance of employing various characterization techniques, such as X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, for the precise identification of secondary phases in CZTS and CZTSe thin films. Furthermore, the review discusses innovative strategies and techniques aimed at mitigating the occurrence of secondary phases, including process optimization, compositional tuning, and post-deposition treatments. These approaches offer promising avenues for enhancing the purity and performance of kesterite-based thin-film solar cells. Challenges and open questions in this field are addressed, and potential future research directions are proposed. By comprehensively analyzing recent advancements, this review contributes to a deeper understanding of secondary phase-related issues in kesterite CZT(S/Se) thin films, paving the way for enhanced performance and commercial viability of thin-film solar cell technologies.
