One of the most advanced and versatile nanoscale diagnostic tools is atomic force microscopy. By enabling advanced imaging techniques, it allows us to determine various assets of a surface, including morphological, electrical, mechanical, magnetic, and thermal properties. Measuring local current flow is one of the very important methods of evaluation for, for instance, photovoltaic materials or semiconductor structures and other nanodevices. Due to contact areas, the current densities can easily reach above 1 kA/m2; therefore, special detection/measurement setups are required. They meet the required measurement range, sensitivity, noise level, and bandwidth at the measurement scale. Also, they prevent the sample from becoming damaged and prevent unwanted tip–sample issues. This review explores the integration of graphene and liquid crystals to advance sensor technologies across multiple domains, with a focus on recent developments in thermal and infrared sensing, flexible actuators, chemical and biological detection, and environmental monitoring systems. The synergy between graphene's exceptional electrical, optical, and thermal properties and the dynamic behavior of liquid crystals leads to sensors with significantly enhanced sensitivity, selectivity, and versatility. Notable contributions of this review include highlighting key advancements such as graphene-doped liquid crystal IR detectors, shape-memory polymers for flexible actuators, and composite hydrogels for environmental pollutant detection. Additionally, this review addresses ongoing challenges in scalability and integration, providing insights into current research efforts aimed at overcoming these obstacles. The potential for multi-modal sensing, self-powered devices, and AI integration is discussed, suggesting a transformative impact of these composite sensors on various sectors, including health, environmental monitoring, and technology. This review demonstrates how the fusion of graphene and liquid crystals is pushing the boundaries of sensor technology, offering more sensitive, adaptable, and innovative solutions to global challenges. As a critical material for high-temperature components of aero-engines, the mechanical properties of Ti65 alloy, subjected to high-temperature and long-term thermal exposure, directly affect its service safety. The room-temperature tensile properties of the Ti65 alloy after thermal exposure to temperatures ranging from 450 °C to 650 °C for 100 h were investigated. The results indicate that as the thermal exposure temperature increases, the strength of Ti65 alloy initially increases and then decreases, while ductility exhibits a decreasing trend. The strength of the thermally exposed alloy positively correlates with the size and content of the α2 phase. The ductility of the thermally exposed alloy is comprehensively influenced by the surface oxidation behavior, α2 phase, and silicides. After the prolonged thermal exposure, stress concentration at the crack tips within the oxide layer was enhanced with the increased thickness of the surface TiO2 oxide layer, leading to premature fracture due to reduced alloy ductility. Furthermore, the α2 phase in the matrix promotes the planar slip of dislocations, while silicides at the α/β phase boundaries hinder dislocation motion, causing dislocation pile-ups. In the present research, the impacts of Ce additions at various concentrations (0, 1.0, 3.4, and 4.0 wt.%) on the evolution of the microstructure, mechanical properties, and thermal conductivity of as-cast and as-extruded Mg-3Sn alloys were investigated. The findings demonstrate that adding Ce caused the creation of a new ternary MgSnCe phase in the magnesium matrix. Some new Mg17Ce2 phases are generated in the microstructure when Ce levels reach 4%. The thermal conductivity of the Mg-3Sn alloy is significantly improved due to Ce addition, and the Mg-3Sn-3.4Ce alloy exhibits the highest thermal conductivity, up to 133.8 W/(m·K) at 298 K. After extrusion, both the thermal conductivity and mechanical properties are further improved. The thermal conductivity perpendicular to the extrusion direction of Mg-3Sn-3.4Ce alloy could achieve 136.28 W/(m·K), and the tensile and yield strengths reach 264.3 MPa and 227.2 MPa, with an elongation of 7.9%. Adding Ce decreases the dissolved Sn atoms and breaks the eutectic α-Mg and Mg2Sn network organization, leading to a considerable increase in the thermal conductivity of as-cast Mg-3Sn alloys. The study examined the possibility of intercalation of montmorillonite with neomycin in an aqueous drug solution and the factors influencing the effectiveness of this process, such as the ion exchange capacity and process conditions, including the time and temperature of incubation with the drug. X-ray diffractometry (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal analysis (DSC/TG), and Zeta potential measurement were used to confirm drug intercalation as well as to investigate the nature of clay–drug interactions. The obtained conjugates with the most favorable physicochemical properties were also tested for antibacterial response against Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli) to confirm that the bactericidal properties of neomycin were retained after intercalation and UV–VIS spectrophotometry was used to examine the kinetics of drug release from the carrier. The results of the conducted research clearly indicate the successful intercalation of neomycin in montmorillonite and indicate the influence of process parameters on the properties of not only the conjugates themselves but also the properties of the intercalated drug, particularly its bactericidal activity. Ultimately, a temperature of 50 °C was found to be optimal for effective drug intercalation and the conjugates obtained within 2 h showed the highest antibacterial activity, indicating the highest potential of the thus-obtained montmorillonite conjugates as neomycin carriers. Sea surface temperature (SST) is an important factor in the marine environment and has significant impacts on climate, ecology, and maritime activities. Most existing SST prediction methods consider the ocean as a uniform field and use a uniform grid to predict SST. However, the marine environment is a complex system, and factors such as solar radiation, differences in land and sea thermal properties, and ocean circulation lead to uneven spatial distributions of SSTs. We propose a non-uniform grid construction method based on an SST spatial gradient to encode SST data, as well as a Non-uniform Grid Graph Convolutional Network (NGGCN) model. The NGGCN consists of two spatiotemporal modules, each of which extracts spatial features from the GCN module, captures temporal correlations through the GRU module, and performs feature restoration and output results through the fully connected module. We selected data from the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea to validate the effectiveness of the NGGCN in predicting SST at different time scales and prediction steps. Fluorosilicone was combined with aluminum trihydrate (ATH) to induce synergistic flame-retardant and thermal-resistant properties. The surface of ATH was modified with four different silane coupling agents. The flammability and mechanical properties of the fluorosilicone/ATH composites were assessed using an UL94 vertical test and a die shear strength test. The change in shear strength was investigated under aging for 1000 h at −55 °C and 150 °C. Pure fluorosilicone had inherent fire resistance and thus achieved a V-0 rating even at 20 wt.% ATH loading. Upon addition of ATH treated with 3-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane, the composites exhibited the highest shear strength of 3.9 MPa at 23 °C because of the additional crosslinking reaction of fluorosilicone resin with the epoxide functional group of the coupling agent. Regardless of the types of coupling agents, the composites exhibited similar flame retardancy at the same ATH content, with a slight reduction in shear strength at 180 °C and 250 °C. The shear strength of the adhesives gradually decreased with aging time at −55 °C, but increased noticeably from 3.9 MPa to 11.5 MPa when aged at 150 °C due to the occurrence of the additional crosslinking reaction of fluorosilicone. Polymer coatings are widely used in industries for protection, decoration, and specific applications, typically including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to achieve low viscosity. The growing environmental concerns and the anticipated limits on fossil feedstock have driven the coating industry towards eco-friendly alternatives, with UV-curing technology emerging as a promising solution due to its energy efficiency, low-temperature operation, reduced VOC emissions, and high curing speed. Polyurethane acrylates (PUAs) are critical in UV-curable formulations, offering excellent flexibility, impact strength, optical, and adhesion properties. However, UV-cured PUA coatings face limitations in thermal stability and tensile strength, which can be addressed by incorporating fillers. This study investigates the effects of multi-functionalized hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) nanoparticles on the mechanical, thermal, optical, and adhesion properties of UV-cured PUA films and coatings for pre-coated metals. The results demonstrated that incorporating hBN nanoparticles enhanced the mechanical and thermal properties of the nanocomposite films, with optimal performance observed at 0.5% hBN loading. Despite the improved properties, the FTIR spectra indicated that the low concentration of hBN did not produce significant changes, potentially due to the overshadowing signals from the difunctional polyurethane acrylate. As an important biodegradable and partially biobased copolyester, poly(butylene succinate-co-terephthalate) (PBST) possesses comparable thermal and mechanical properties and superior gas barrier performance when compared with poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), but it was found to display poorer melt processability during pelletizing and injection molding. To make clear its melt crystallization behavior under rapid cooling, PBST48 and PBST44 were synthesized, and their melt crystallization was investigated comparatively with PBAT48. PBST48 showed a PBAT48-comparable melt crystallization performance at a cooling rate of 10 °C/min or at isothermal conditions, but it showed a melt crystallization ability at a cooling rate of 40 °C/min which was clearly poorer. PBST44, which has the same mass composition as PBAT48, completely lost its melt crystallization ability under the rapid cooling. The weaker chain mobility of PBST, resulting from its shorter succinate moiety, is responsible for its inferior melt crystallization ability and processability. In comparison with PBAT48, PBST48 displayed higher tensile modulus, and both PBST48 and PBST44 showed higher light transmittance. Petroleum-based food packaging causes environmental problems such as waste accumulation and microplastic generation. In this work, biobased films from stable polyelectrolyte complex suspensions (PECs) of xylan and chitosan (70 Xyl/30 Ch wt% mass ratio), at different concentrations of citric acid (CA) (0, 2.5, 5, 7.5 wt%), were prepared and characterized. Films were treated at two temperatures (135 °C, 155 °C) and times (30 min, 60 min) to promote covalent crosslinking. Esterification and amidation reactions were confirmed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Confocal Raman Microscopy. Water resistance and dry and wet stress–strain results were markedly increased by thermal treatment, mainly at 155 °C. The presence of 5 wt% CA tended to increase dry and wet stress–strain values further, up to 88 MPa—10% (155 °C for 60 min), and 5.6 MPa—40% (155 °C for 30 min), respectively. The UV-blocking performance of the films was improved by all treatments, as was thermal stability (up to Tonset: 230 °C). Contact angle values were between 73 and 84°, indicating partly wettable surfaces. Thermoset-based polymer composites containing functional fillers are promising materials for a variety of applications, such as in the aerospace and medical fields. However, the resin viscosity is often unsuitably high and thus impedes a successful filler dispersion in the matrix. This challenge can be overcome by incorporating suitable low-viscosity modifiers into the prepolymer. While modifiers can aptly influence the prepolymer rheology, they can also affect the prepolymer curing behavior and the mechanical and thermal properties of the resulting matrix material. Therefore, this study investigates the effects that a commercial-grade low-viscosity additive (butyl glycidyl ether) has on a common epoxy polymer system (diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A epoxy with a methylene dianiline curative). The weight percentage of the modifier inside the epoxy was varied from 0 to 20%. The rheological properties and cure kinetics of the resulting materials were investigated. The prepolymer viscosity decreased by 97% with 20 wt% modifier content at room temperature. Upon curing, 20 wt% modifier addition reduced the exothermic peak temperature by 12% and prolonged the time to reach the peak by 60%. For cured material samples, physical and thermo-mechanical properties were characterized. A moderate reduction in glass transition temperature and an increase in elastic modulus was observed with 20 wt% modifier content (in the order of 10%). Based on these findings, the selected material system is seen as an expedient base for material design due to the ease of processing and material availability. Two-dimensional (2D) materials have drawn extensive attention due to their exceptional characteristics and potential uses in electronics and energy storage. This investigation employs simulations using molecular dynamics to examine the mechanical and thermal transport attributes of the 2D silicene–germanene (Si-Ge) lateral heterostructure. The pre-existing cracks of the Si-Ge lateral heterostructure are addressed with external strain. Then, the effect of vacancy defects and temperature on the mechanical attributes is also investigated. By manipulating temperature and incorporating vacancy defects and pre-fabricated cracks, the mechanical behaviors of the Si-Ge heterostructure can be significantly modulated. In order to investigate the heat transport performance of the Si-Ge lateral heterostructure, a non-equilibrium molecular dynamics approach is employed. The efficient phonon average free path is obtained as 136.09 nm and 194.34 nm, respectively, in the Si-Ge heterostructure with a zigzag and armchair interface. Amid the current environmental crisis caused by plastic accumulation, one of the proposed solutions to manage this problem is using biodegradable polymers. However, the impact of adding biodegradable polymers to the well-established circular economy of recyclable polymers, such as HDPE, has not been fully considered. Therefore, there is a need to reconsider the way we consume, dispose of, and manage biodegradable polymers after use. This study evaluates the effect of varying the contents of a biodegradable polymer, taking poly(lactic acid) (PLA) as a model biodegradable polymer, on the thermal and mechanical properties of HDPE. The study highlights the importance of identifying and disposing of biodegradable polymers to avoid mixtures with HDPE, in order not to affect mechanical performance when considering reprocessing and a new life cycle of this conventional polymer. Biodegradable and bio-based polymers, including polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), polylactic acid (PLA), and poly(butylene succinate-co-adipate) (PBSA), stand out as sustainable alternatives to traditional petroleum-based plastics for a wide range of consumer applications. Studying binary and ternary blends is essential to exploring the synergistic combinations and efficiencies of three distinct biopolyesters. A comprehensive evaluation of melt-extruded binary and ternary polymer blends of PHA, PLA, and PBSA was conducted. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses revealed a heterogeneous morphology characteristic of immiscible blends, with a predominant spherical inclusion morphology observed in the majority of the blends. An increased PBSA concentration led to an elevation in melt viscosity and elasticity across both ternary and binary blends. An increased PHA content reduced the viscosity, along with both storage and loss moduli in the blends. Moreover, a rise in PHA concentration within the blends led to increased crystallinity, albeit with a noticeable reduction in the crystallization temperature of PHA. PLA retained amorphous structure in the blends. The resultant bio-based blends manifested enhanced rheological and calorimetric traits, divergent from their pure polymer counterparts, highlighting the potential for optimizing material properties through strategic formulation adjustments. Polysaccharides are an excellent renewable source for developing food-packing materials. It is expected that these packages can be an efficient barrier against oxygen; can reduce lipid peroxidation, and can retain the natural aroma of a food commodity. Starch has tremendous potential to be explored in the preparation of food packaging; however, due to their high hydrophilic nature, packaging films produced from starch possess poor protective moisture barriers and low mechanical properties. This scenario limits their applications, especially in humid conditions. In contrast, lignin's highly complex aromatic hetero-polymer network of phenylpropane units is known to play a filler role in polysaccharide films. Moreover, lignin can limit the biodegradability of polysaccharides films by a physical barrier, mainly, and by non-productive bindings. The main interactions affecting lignin non-productive bindings are hydrophobic interactions, electrostatic interactions, and hydrogen-bonding interactions, which are dependent on the total phenolic –OH and –COOH content in its chemical structure. In this review, the use of lignin as a reinforcement to improve the biodegradability of starch-based films in wet environments is presented. Moreover, the characteristics of the used lignins, the mechanisms of molecular interaction among these materials, and the sensitive physicochemical parameters for biodegradability detection are related. Xerosydryle belongs to a new category of materials resulting from the interaction of water with various hydrophilic polymers. These materials can exhibit different properties depending on the kind of polymer-water interaction. Previous research confirmed the existence of a solid manifestation of water at room temperature. The thermal properties of dissolved xerosydryle in water are similar to those of biological macromolecules during denaturation but with greater stability. This study investigated the biological effect of xerosydryle on a living system for the first time, using a seed germination model. The interaction was evaluated using physiological assays such as chlorophyll shifts, potassium (re)uptake during the onset of germination and a transcriptome approach. Seeds were treated with samples of xerosydryle and distilled water. Transcriptome analysis of germinating seeds highlighted differences (up- and down-regulated genes) between seeds treated with xerosydryle and those treated with distilled water. Overall, the experiments performed indicate that xerosydryle, even at low concentrations, interferes with seedling growth in a manner similar to an osmotic modulator. This work paves the way for a more comprehensive exploration of the active biological role of xerosydryle and similar compounds on living matter and opens up speculation on the interactions at the boundaries between physics, chemistry, and biology. In advanced powder metallurgy technologies such as metal injection molding (MIM) and material extrusion technology (MEX), the intricate synergy between binder components and metallic powders within feedstocks is predominant, dictating the technological boundaries of metal's complexity, size, and thickness. This work suggests unique binder constituents (polymers, surfactants and melamine), aiming to boost the debinding efficacy and solid loading while ensuring processability. The interactions and role of melamine by thermal and rheological studies are detailed, spotlighting how, unlike traditional binder systems, the pioneering feedstock introduces beneficial modifications to storage modulus (G′) and loss tangent (tan δ), alongside a lubricating effect on metallic mixtures. This study examined the thermal reflective properties of composite inorganic coatings applied to various wall types. It evaluated the influence of these coatings on the thermal insulation and reflectivity of the walls. The findings indicate that coating application markedly enhances a wall's thermal insulation capabilities and increases its heat flux reflection ratio. These results offer crucial theoretical backing and practical guidance for the future use of coating technologies in construction. The incorporation and application of SAGD rapid preheating technology effectively solve the problem of the long preheating cycle in the SAGD steam cycle. The thermal properties of reservoir rocks are an important factor affecting the heat transfer law governing their formation during the rapid preheating process of SAGD. During the rapid preheating process of SAGD, the expansion of the reservoir and the steam cycle process will cause changes in the pore permeability, oil-water saturation, and temperature of the reservoir rocks, which will inevitably lead to differences in the changes that occur in the thermal properties of the reservoir rocks, compared to those under the influence of a single factor. In this study, experiments were conducted to determine the thermal properties of reservoir rocks under the combined influence of pore permeability, oil-water saturation, and temperature, quantitatively characterizing the changes in the thermal properties of reservoir rocks. Using the orthogonal method to design and carry out experiments for determining the thermal properties of reservoir rocks, the main factors affecting the thermal properties of reservoir rocks and the significance of each factor's impact on the thermal properties of reservoir rocks were determined through intuitive analysis and variance analysis of the experimental results. Finally, a regression equation that can characterize changes in the thermal properties of reservoir rocks under the influence of multiple factors was obtained through multiple nonlinear regressions of the experimental results. The thermal and optical properties of 60TeO2-20K2TeO3-10WO3-10Nb2O5 (in mol%) glasses doped with Ho2O3, Er2O3, and Tm2O3 were explored in the present work. The thermal stability, refractive index n, extinction coefficient k, absorption coefficient α, and optical band gap of the glasses were evaluated. The UV–Vis–NIR absorption spectra, the Judd–Ofelt intensity parameter, the spectroscopic quality factor, and the emission and absorption cross-sections were calculated to investigate the effects of Er3+ and Tm3+, respectively, on the band spectroscopic properties of Ho3+ ions. The results showed that the maximum emission cross-section was approximately 8 × 10 − 21   c m 2 , and the values of the full width at half maximum ( F W H M) , quality factor ( σ e × F W H M) , and gain coefficient of Ho3+: 5I7 → 5I8 were also reported. The value of the F W H M × σ e was 1200 × 10 − 28   c m 3 , which showed greater gain characteristics than earlier study results. In the context of ecological sustainability, this study focuses on the effect of variables of pasture fibers on the thermal properties of slag bricks made from a green recyclable material. This experiment uses slag as the binder, sand as the aggregate, and pasture fiber as an additive. The experimental variables include the additive content ratio of the pasture fiber, the size of the pasture fiber, and the type of pasture fiber. Significance analysis of the experimental results of the thermal performance tests is carried out using Minitab 18.1.0 software, and the optimal ratios for the thermal performance of the composite samples are derived from the response optimizer and conformity analysis. The results of the experiment's test analysis using Minitab 18 software indicate that, with an increase in pasture fiber content, the thermal performance of the composite samples initially decreases before increasing. Additionally, the lower the thermal conductivity of the composite sample, the lower the apparent density and the higher the porosity. Incorporating pasture fibers into slag bricks, as revealed in this study, reduces the waste of pasture resources in pastoral areas and promotes the development of sustainable building materials with favorable thermal properties. Thermoelectric materials that can convert thermal energy to electrical energy are stable and long-lasting and do not emit greenhouse gases; these properties render them useful in novel power generation devices that can conserve and utilize lost heat. SiC exhibits good mechanical properties, excellent corrosion resistance, high-temperature stability, non-toxicity, and environmental friendliness. It can withstand elevated temperatures and thermal shock and is well suited for thermoelectric conversions in high-temperature and harsh environments, such as supersonic vehicles and rockets. This paper reviews the potential of SiC as a high-temperature thermoelectric and third-generation wide-bandgap semiconductor material. Recent research on SiC thermoelectric materials is reviewed, and the principles and methods for optimizing the thermoelectric properties of SiC are discussed. We report a transformative epoxy system with a microalgae-derived bio-binder from hydrothermal liquefaction processing (HTL). The obtained bio-binder not only served as a curing agent for conventional epoxy resin (e.g., EPON 862), but also acted as a modifying agent to enhance the thermal and mechanical properties of the conventional epoxy resin. This game-changing epoxy/bio-binder system outperformed the conventional epoxy/hardener system in thermal stability and mechanical properties. Compared to the commercial EPON 862/EPIKURE W epoxy product, our epoxy/bio-binder system (35 wt.% bio-binder addition with respect to the epoxy) increased the temperature of 60% weight loss from 394 °C to 428 °C and the temperature of maximum decomposition rate from 382 °C to 413 °C, while the tensile, flexural, and impact performance of the cured epoxy improved in all cases by up to 64%. Our research could significantly impact the USD 38.2 billion global market of the epoxy-related industry by not only providing better thermal and mechanical performance of epoxy-based composite materials, but also simultaneously reducing the carbon footprint from the epoxy industry and relieving waste epoxy pollution. This study aimed to investigate the potential of antimony-doped tin oxide (ATO) as a reinforcing agent for polyamide 12 (PA12) in 3D printing by examining four mixtures with varying ATO concentrations (2.0 to 8.0 wt.%, with a 2.0 wt.% interval). These mixtures were used to fabricate filaments for the manufacturing of specimens through the material extrusion method. The mechanical properties of the resulting PA12/ATO composites and PA12 pure samples were evaluated through tensile, Charpy impact, flexural, and microhardness tests. Additionally, rheology, structure, morphology, thermal properties, pore size, and consistency in the dimensions of the samples were evaluated. Thermogravimetric analysis, along with differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive and Raman spectroscopy, and micro-computed tomography, were conducted. The results were correlated and interpreted. The greatest reinforcement was achieved with the PA12/ATO 4.0 wt.% mixture, which exhibited a 19.3% increase in tensile strength and an 18.6% increase in flexural strength compared with pure PA12 (the control samples). The Charpy impact strength and microhardness were also improved by more than 10%. Hot air, water, and glycerol were studied as foaming mediums for the production of ETPU to evaluate their influence on the behavior of the foam and compare the optimal particles for each of the foaming temperatures selected. The results showed that the times of water foaming and glycerol foaming were shorter by about 2/3 than with hot-air foaming. The best foaming temperatures for hot-air foaming, glycerol foaming, and water foaming are 110–115 °C, 75 °C, and 90 °C, respectively. The particles of glycerol foam have a matte appearance and their gloss is not very good. However, the particles in hot-air foaming are light, and the gloss is very satisfactory. The gloss of the surface of water-foaming particles is dim. At the same time, there is a faint matte appearance. Particles made with glycerol foaming and water foaming are more even than those made with hot-air foaming. The density of foaming materials from glycerol foaming, hot-air foaming, and water foaming are raised accordingly, while the hardness of foaming materials from glycerol foaming, water foaming, and hot-air foaming are successively increased. Until recently, recycling thermoset polyurethanes (PUs) was limited to degrading methods. The development of covalent adaptable networks (CANs), to which PUs can be assigned, has opened novel possibilities for actual recycling. Most efforts in this area have been directed toward inventing new materials that can benefit from CAN theory; presently, little or nothing has been applied to industrially producible materials. In this study, both an industrially available polyol (Sovermol780®) and isocyanate (Tolonate X FLO 100®) with percentages of bioderived components were employed, resulting in a potentially scalable and industrially producible material. The resultant network could be reworked up to three times, maintaining the crosslinked structure without significantly changing the thermal properties. Improvements in mechanical parameters were observed when comparing the pristine material to the material exposed to three rework processes, with gains of roughly 50% in elongation at break and 20% in tensile strength despite a 25% decrease in Young's modulus and crosslink density. Thus, it was demonstrated that theory may be profitably applied even to materials that are not designed including additional bonds but instead rely just on the dynamic urethane bond that is naturally present in the network. This study explores the synthesis and performance of novel copolyesters containing 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BDO) as a biobased secondary diol. This presents an opportunity for improving their thermal properties and reducing crystallinity, while also being more sustainable. It is, however, a challenge to synthesize copolyesters of sufficient molecular weight that also have high 2,3-BDO content, due to the reduced reactivity of secondary diols compared to primary diols. Terephthalate-based polyesters were synthesized in combination with different ratios of 2,3-BDO and ethylene glycol (EG). With a 2,3-BDO to EG ratio of 28:72, an Mn of 31.5 kDa was reached with a Tg of 88 °C. The Mn dropped with increasing 2,3-BDO content to 18.1 kDa for a 2,3-BDO to EG ratio of 78:22 (Tg = 104 °C) and further to 9.8 kDa (Tg = 104 °C) for the homopolyester of 2,3-BDO and terephthalate. The water and oxygen permeability both increased significantly with increasing 2,3-BDO content and even the lowest content of 2,3-BDO (28% of total diol) performed significantly worse than PET. The incorporation of 2,3-BDO had little effect on the tensile properties of the polyesters, which were similar to PET. The results suggest that 2,3-BDO can be potentially applied for polyesters requiring higher Tg and lower crystallinity than existing materials (mainly PET). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Polylactic acid (PLA) composite serve as widely used filaments in fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing. This study investigates the enhancement of PLA composite's comprehensive mechanical properties and thermal stability through the incorporation of carbon fiber (CF). The influence of FDM process parameters on the mechanical properties of PLA composite is also analyzed. Results show that adding 5 wt.% CF significantly enhances the stiffness and comprehensive mechanical properties of PLA composite. The order of printing factors affecting the tensile strength of the PLA composite product is as follows: printing layer thickness, bottom plate temperature, printing speed, and nozzle temperature. Finally, optimal tensile strength is achieved under specific conditions: 0.1 mm layer thickness, 60 °C bottom plate temperature, 40 mm/s printing speed, and 215 °C nozzle temperature. In this study, the effect of boric acid (H3BO3) on fiber-reinforced layered composites was investigated. Glass fiber-reinforced epoxy composites were used, and the effects of boric acid on thermal and mechanical properties were investigated. For this purpose, composite plates were manufactured by adding boric acid (BA) to the epoxy in different ratios (0, 0.5, 1, and 1.5% by weight). Tensile tests, compression tests, and shear tests were performed to determine the mechanical properties of these plates, and DSC, TGA, and DMA analyses were performed to determine their thermal properties. SEM and EDS analyses were performed on the specimens to examine their morphologies. Furthermore, examinations were conducted on how BA affected the specimens' failure behavior. In the study, it was found that, except for the compressive strength, the mechanical properties were improved by the added BA. The highest tensile strength, shear strength, modulus of elasticity, shear modulus, and Poisson's ratio were obtained from 0.5% BA-added specimens and were 24.78%, 8.75%, 25.13%, 11.24%, and 12.5% higher than the values obtained from 0% BA-added specimens, respectively. The highest loss and storage modulus were obtained from 0% and 0.5% BA-added specimens, respectively. The specimens' glass transition temperatures were decreased by the addition of BA; the specimen with a 1% addition of BA had the lowest value. The comprehensive performance of rubber products could be significantly improved by the addition of functional fillers. To improve research efficiency and decrease the experimental cost, the mechanical and thermal properties of carbon-fiber-reinforced rubber were investigated using finite element simulations and theoretical modeling. The simplified micromechanical model was constructed through the repeatable unit cell with periodic boundary conditions, and the corresponding theoretical models were built based on the rule of mixture (ROM), which can be treated as the mutual verification. The simulation results suggest that, in addition to the fiber volume fraction Vfc increasing from 10% to 70%, the longitudinal Young's modulus, transversal Young's modulus, in-plane shear modulus, longitudinal thermal expansion coefficient, and transversal thermal expansion coefficient changed from 2.31 × 1010 Pa to 16.09 × 1010 Pa, from 0.54 × 107 Pa to 2.59 × 107 Pa, from 1.66 × 106 Pa to 10.11 × 106 Pa, from −4.98 × 10−7 K−1 to −5.89 × 10−7 K−1, and from 5.72 × 10−4 K−1 to 1.66 × 10−4 K−1, respectively. The mechanism by which Vfc influences the properties of carbon-fiber-reinforced rubber was revealed through the distribution of Von Mises stress. This paper evaluates the design and fabrication of a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) shape memory polymer (SMP) using fused deposition modeling (FDM). The commercially available SMP filament was used to create parts capable of changing their shape following the application of an external heat stimulus. The characterization of thermal and viscoelastic properties of the SMP TPU revealed a proportional change in shape fixity and recovery with respect to heating and cooling rates, as well as a decreasing softening temperature with increasing shape memory history due to changes in the polymer microstructure. Inspired by the advancements in 3D and 4D printing, we investigated the feasibility of creating multi-material lattice structures using SMP and another thermoplastic with poor adhesion to TPU. A variety of interlocking lattice structures were evaluated by combining SMP with another thermoplastic that have poor adhesion with TPU. The tensile strength and failure modes of the fabricated multi-material parts were compared against homogenous SMP TPU specimens. It was found that the lattice interface failed first at approximately 41% of the ultimate strength of the homogenous part on average. The maximum recorded ultimate strength of the multi-material specimens reached 62% of SMP TPU's ultimate strength. Many historic buildings and monuments on the Salento Peninsula (Apulia, southern Italy) were built from locally quarried Miocene calcarenites belonging to the Pietra Leccese Formation (Late Burdigalian–early Messinian). The main facies consists of a homogeneous and porous biomicrite, pale yellow in colour and fine- to medium-grained, very rich in planktonic Foraminifera and massive or thick-bedded in outcrop. Additionally, there are other facies, among which Piromafo stands out for its aesthetic appearance, enhanced by its greenish-brown or greenish-grey colours. Piromafo occurs in the upper part of the Pietra Leccese Fm. and is represented by a fine- to medium-grained glauconitic and phosphatic biomicrite with macrofossils, especially Bivalves and Gastropods. Despite its important historical use as a building and ornamental material, especially in Roman and Baroque architecture, a research gap exists in the scientific literature describing the properties of the stone and their correlation. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to present a wide range of properties useful in explaining the in situ behaviour and damage susceptibility of the stone in monuments and buildings, but also to assist in selecting preservation treatments and strategies. An overall assessment of the main petrophysical and mechanical properties, especially for restoration/conservation purposes, was performed using both standard and unconventional techniques. Starting with rock fabric inspection, particular attention was given to the relationship between the pore size distribution and the hydraulic and thermal properties of the material. Unconfined compressive strength, flexural strength, and indirect tensile strength were also estimated. The findings reveal a significant correlation between the pore size distribution and the hydraulic and thermal properties of Piromafo, impacting its durability and suitability for use in conservation. Specifically, the thermal properties, influenced by the mineral composition and fabric, indicate the potential for using Piromafo as an effective refractory and insulation material, which justifies the origin of its name and confirms what is already stated in the specific literature. Additionally, correlations were proposed among the various mechanical parameters evaluated, including the Schmidt hammer rebound values with compressive strength and tangent modulus. The accumulation of electronic waste (E-waste) has become a significant global environmental issue, driven by the characteristics of the modern era and the ever-increasing use of electronic devices. Thus, a sustainable approach is necessary to overcome this issue. In this paper, an overview of utilizing E-waste as a sustainable aggregate in concrete production was comprehensively reviewed. The basic composition, characteristics, and production techniques were discussed. In addition to that, the colour, shape, size, aggregate crushing value, and water absorption of E-waste concrete were also discussed. Furthermore, the workability properties such as slump flow, mechanical properties (compressive strength, flexural strength, tensile strength) and thermal resistance of E-waste concrete identified by the various researchers were summarised. Based on the literature review, it is concluded that the shape and size distributions of E-waste particles greatly influenced the aggregate properties, and the percentage of replacement of E-waste aggregate affect the workability and mechanical and thermal properties of E-waste concrete. Silica aerogel has remarkable properties, particularly its translucence/transparency, extremely low thermal conductivity and density. Due to these properties, it can be used for the thermal insulation of buildings for energy saving, cost saving, and enhanced comfort. In this context, aerogel products such as aerogel blankets have already started to demonstrate their effectiveness in retrofitting projects and the development and adoption of aerogel glazing systems and aerogel-enhanced renders is promising. Other products, for example, through the incorporation of silica aerogel granules in cement and lime renders were obtained, with high thermal insulation properties, to achieve energy efficiency on buildings facades. This research aims to come up with new aerogel particle composition insulation plasters at cost-effective rates for application in building insulation. Their physical apparent mass density, mechanical–flexural and compressive strengths, thermal conductivity, and properties were investigated. As an experimental study, the thermal conductivities of six sets of cement and lime plasters with aerogel particles (0.1–4.0 mm) were investigated and it was concluded that the thermal conductivity of cement and lime plasters with 80% aerogel was 0.2287 W·m−1·K−1, about 3.4 times smaller than the respective value of traditional lightweight plasters of 0.76 W·m−1·K−1, while the cement and lime plasters with less than 40% aerogel showed a thermal conductivity value as low as 0.3172 W·m−1·K−1. It was confirmed that the end product plasters' mechanical qualities included low apparent mass densities, no apparent shrinkage, and mechanical strength values that matched those of the prepared compositions. In recent years, natural fiber-reinforced hybrid composites have been utilized in many applications because of their lower cost, biodegradability, and low density. The aim of this research is to convert crab shell waste into an effective reinforcement in jute/carbon fiber hybrid composites. Various weight percentages of crab shell powder (0%, 1%, 3%, 5%, and 7%) were used to prepare crab shell powder hybrid composites. The performance of the crab shell powder hybrid composites was evaluated by preparing the specimens to conduct tensile, flexural, impact, and hardness tests as per ASTM standards. The results show that the inclusion of 5% crab shell powder displayed a better enhancement in the properties of the hybrid composite compared to other weight percentages. The tensile, flexural, and impact strengths of the 5% crab shell powder hybrid composite increased by 21%, 52%, and 50%, respectively. Also, the hardness of the hybrid composite was enhanced by 33%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) tests were conducted on the tensile-fractured specimen surfaces, and their morphology and structure confirmed the presence of a well-bonded interface between the fiber and matrix. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Thermogravimetry (TG) analysis have shown that the crystallization behavior and thermal stability of the composite were enhanced with the inclusion of crab shell powder. The miniaturization and high-power density of modern electronic devices pose significant thermal management issues, particularly affecting their performance and lifetime. Ladder-like polysilsesquioxanes (LPSQs) offer a promising solution due to their remarkable thermal, mechanical, and chemical properties. By incorporating thermally conductive fillers, LPSQ composites can achieve high thermal conductivity (TC), making them ideal for thermal management in advanced electronic applications. In this study, LPSQ-based nanocomposites containing functionalized alumina nanoparticles were prepared by solution casting and UV curing, and the effects of varying amounts of Irgacure-184 photoinitiator on their structural and thermal properties were investigated. Three sets of samples were prepared with a fixed amount of LPSQs, 80 wt.% of nanoparticles, and 1, 5, or 10 wt.% of photoinitiator with respect to the matrix. TC was evaluated from the measured values of heat capacity, density, and thermal diffusivity. TC values increased by 60%, 71.2%, and 93.1% for the three samples, respectively, compared to the neat matrix. Results indicate that an intermediate amount of photoinitiator (5%) preserved LPSQs' structural integrity, namely the presence of long linear silsesquioxane chains, and provided good filler dispersion and distribution, high polymerization degree, thermal stability, and high TC. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are considered an advanced form of carbon. They have superior characteristics in terms of mechanical and thermal properties compared to other available fibers and can be used in various applications, such as supercapacitors, sensors, and artificial muscles. The properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are significantly affected by geometric parameters such as chirality and aspect ratio, and testing conditions such as temperature and strain rate. In this study, the effects of geometric parameters and temperature on the mechanical properties of SWNTs were studied by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations using the Large-scaled Atomic/Molecular Massively Parallel Simulator (LAMMPS). Based on the second-generation reactive empirical bond order (REBO) potential, SWNTs of different diameters were tested in tension and compression under different strain rates and temperatures to understand their effects on the mechanical behavior of SWNTs. It was observed that the Young's modulus and the tensile strength decreases with increasing SWNT tube diameter. As the chiral angle increases, the tensile strength increases, while the Young's modulus decreases. The simulations were repeated at different temperatures of 300 K, 900 K, 1500 K, 2100 K and different strain rates of 1 × 10−3/ps, 0.75 × 10−3/ps, 0.5 × 10−3/ps, and 0.25 × 10−3/ps to investigate the effects of temperature and strain rate, respectively. The results show that the ultimate tensile strength of SWNTs increases with increasing strain rate. It is also seen that when SWNTs were stretched at higher temperatures, they failed at lower stresses and strains. The compressive behavior results indicate that SWNTs tend to buckle under lower stresses and strains than those under tensile stress. Due to the large increase in human population, the need for more buildings and other amenities is widening. Concrete is considered one of the most abundant and popular materials used in the structure and construction fields. It is known as a composite mix composed of cement and aggregates including fine and coarse and water. Despite its good properties, its capability to be formed in different shapes and its ability to resist severe conditions, concrete will struggle with the presence of extremely high temperatures. So, different types of concrete must be found to resist those challenging conditions. Refractory concrete can be considered a good choice to be used in places exposed to elevated temperatures and severe conditions. Mainly, refractory concrete is made up of ordinary Portland cement replacement well known as refractory cement, specific types of fine and coarse aggregates and are known as refractory or temperature-bearing aggregates and water. Research into lightweight structural concrete using volcanic tuff is of great importance to the construction industry. These materials have excellent thermal insulation properties, which helps improve the energy efficiency of buildings. A three-factor experimental design was used to build the statistical model. The test methods used were methods for determining the crushability of volcanic tuff, determining the average density, compressive strength and thermal conductivity of lightweight structural concrete. The influence of basalt fiber on the properties of lightweight structural concrete has been determined. The optimal compositions of lightweight structural concrete using tuff have been selected. The compressive strength of lightweight structural concrete reached 32.0 MPa. The average density range is 1754.6–2114.0 kg/m3. Good thermal conductivity values were obtained in the range of 0.653–0.818 W/m·K. The article obtained the optimal compositions of lightweight structural concrete using volcanic tuff as a filler. Non-recyclable fiber rejects from paper mills, particularly those from recycled linerboard mills, contain high levels of structural carbohydrates but are currently landfilled, causing financial and environmental burdens. The aim of this study was to develop efficient and sustainable bioprocess to upcycle these rejects into polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), a biodegradable alternative to degradation-resistant petroleum-based plastics. To achieve high yields of PHB per unit biomass, the specific objective of the study was to investigate various approaches to enhance the hydrolysis yields of fiber rejects to maximize sugar recovery and evaluate the fermentation performance of these sugars using Escherichia coli LSBJ. The investigated approaches included size reduction, surfactant addition, and a chemical-free hydrothermal pretreatment process. A two-step hydrothermal pretreatment, involving a hot water pretreatment (150 °C and 15% solid loading for 10 min) followed by three cycles of disk refining, was found to be highly effective and resulted in an 83% cellulose conversion during hydrolysis. The hydrolysate obtained from pretreated biomass normally requires a detoxification step to enhance fermentation efficiency. However, the hydrolysate obtained from the pretreated biomass contained minimal to no inhibitory compounds, as indicated by the efficient sugar fermentation and high PHB yields, which were comparable to those from fermenting raw biomass hydrolysate. Environmental barrier coatings are critically needed in the future to safeguard SiC-based ceramic matrix composites (SiC CMCs) used in gas turbines. Element doping of rare earth monosilicates could further improve the properties of the coating. The crystal structure, elastic properties, and resistance to water vapor corrosion of Yb2SiO5 and YbRESiO5 (where RE = Sc, Y, Eu, Gd, Ho, Tm, Lu) were examined in this study using first-principles calculations. When RE is Yb, the material is Yb2SiO5. Based on the outcomes of the calculation, we prepared YbRESiO5 (RE = Sc, Yb, Eu) and studied the thermodynamic properties. The findings show that YbReSiO5's resistance to water vapor corrosion is as follows: YbLuSiO5 < YbEuSiO5 < YbGdSiO5 < YbYSiO5 < Yb2SiO5 < YbTmSiO5 < YbHoSiO5 < YbScSiO5. YbScSiO5 has a lower unit cell volume, average Re-O bond length, and thermal expansion coefficient than Yb2SiO5, while YbEuSiO5 has the reverse pattern. Moreover, of the eight materials, YbScSiO5 has the greatest elastic modulus and lattice distortion. After doping with Eu, YbEuSiO5 exhibits a decrease in thermal conductivity by nearly thirty percent compared to Yb2SiO5, due to the formation of oxygen vacancies. PDMS-based aerogel layers were synthesized as insulation layers by adopting mullite fiber (MF), hollow glass microspheres (HGM) and silica aerogel (SA) as the main fillers, and their loading amounts and content ratios were checked to investigate their effects on the thermal insulation properties in PDMS composites by thermal conductivity, thermal stability, and thermal insulation. The loading amount of nanofillers can significantly influence the insulation-layer performance, and the best performance with the lowest thermal conductivity of 0.0568 W/(m·K) was obtained by 10 wt% loading in PDMS with MF:SA:HGM = 2:2:1, which can achieve a temperature difference (∆T) of 67 °C on a 200 °C hotplate. Moreover, the variation of the filler content ratios can also affect the thermal insulation behavior when the loading amount is fixed at 10 wt%, and the best thermal barrier performance can be found for the sample with more SA as the filler (MF:SA:HGM = 1:3:1). The formed sample had the best thermal stability and thermal insulation property, which can stand a 9 min flame test without burning by butane spray gun, and the backside of the sample showed ∆T > 500 °C for the whole test. In recent years, attention to the realization and characterization of wetsuits for scuba diving and other sea sports or activities has increased. The research has aimed to establish reliable and standardized measurement methods to objectively assess wetsuit quality, particularly focusing on their mechanical and thermal properties. In this work, we describe and compare two different measurement methods for the characterization of neoprene wetsuit thermal resistivity. The first method follows the existing regulations in the field, while the second one, which we are originally proposing in this paper, offers an alternative yet accurate way based on a simplified experimental set-up and easier measurements. In both cases, the wetsuit sample under testing was shaped in the form of a cylindrical sleeve of proper dimensions and wrapped around a phantom containing water at a higher temperature and surrounded by water at a lower temperature. The wetsuit's cylindrical surface allows heat flow from the warmer water on the inside to the colder water on the outside through the wetsuit area. In the first case, a thermal steady state was achieved, with constant heat flow from the phantom to the exterior. This was obtained with a power balance between two homogenous quantities. Electrically supplied thermal heating within the phantom was used to balance the thermal energy naturally flowing through the wetsuit's surface. In this first case, a stable and fixed temperature difference was obtained between the inner and the outer surfaces of the wetsuit sample. In the second case, a thermal transient was analyzed during the cooling process of the phantom, and the thermal time constant was measured, providing the sample thermal resistance once the phantom thermal capacity was known. In both cases and methods, the heat flow and thermal resistance of other elements than the wetsuit must be evaluated and compensated for if they are not negligible. Finally, the thermal resistivity per unit area of the wetsuit material was obtained with the product of the wetsuit sample's thermal resistance and the wetsuit area. The measurements, conducted until now by immersing the phantom in a free surface tank, show that both methods—under stationary and under transient temperature conditions—were valid to assess the wetsuit's thermal resistivity. The stationary method somehow provided better accuracy while involving less well-known parameters but at the expense of a more complicated experimental set-up and additional energy consumption. The transitory method, on the other hand, is quite easy to implement and, after careful characterization of the phantom's parameters, it provided similar results to the stationary one. An uncertainty budget was evaluated for both methods, and they did provide highly compatible measurement results, with resistivity values of 0.104(9) m2·K/W (stationary method) and 0.095(9) K·m2/W (transient method) for the same wetsuit sample under testing, which is also consistent with the values in the literature. This study compares the workability, mechanical, and thermal characteristics of structural self-compacting lightweight concrete (SCLWC) formulations using pumice aggregate (PA), expanded perlite aggregate (EPA), fly ash (FA), and silica fume (SF). FA and SF were used as partial substitutes for cement at a 10% ratio in various mixes, impacting different aspects: According to the obtained results, FA enhanced the workability but SF reduced it, while SF improved the compressive and splitting tensile strengths more than FA. EPA, used as a fine aggregate alongside PA, decreased the workability, compressive strength, and splitting tensile strength compared to the control mix (K0). The thermal properties were altered by FA and SF similarly, while EPA notably reduced the thermal conductivity coefficients. The thermal conductivity coefficients (TCCs) of the K0–K4 SCLWC mixtures ranged from 0.275 to 0.364 W/mK. K0 had a TCC of 0.364 W/mK. With 10% FA, K1 achieved 0.305 W/mK; K2 with 10% SF reached 0.325 W/mK. K3 and K4, using EPA instead of PA, showed significantly lower TCC values: 0.275 W/mK and 0.289 W/mK, respectively. FA and SF improved the thermal conductivity compared to K0, while EPA further reduced the TCC values in K3 and K4 compared to K1 and K2. The compressive strength (CS) values of the K0–K4 SCLWC mixtures at 7 and 28 days reveal notable trends. Using 10% FA in K1 decreased the CS at both 7 days (12.16 MPa) and 28 days (22.36 MPa), attributed to FA's gradual pozzolanic activity. Conversely, K2 with SF showed increased CS at 7 days (17.88 MPa) and 28 days (29.89 MPa) due to SF's rapid pozzolanic activity. Incorporating EPA into K3 and K4 reduced the CS values compared to PA, indicating EPA's lower strength contribution due to its porous structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents the results of the research on the structure and thermal properties of materials made from fly ash based on high-density polyethylene (HDPE). Composites based on a polyethylene matrix with 5, 10, and 15 wt% fly ash from hard coal combustion content were examined. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) was used to identify characteristic functional groups present in the chemical structure of polyethylene and the composites based on its matrix. Structural analysis was performed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), and microscopic examinations. Mechanical properties were also examined. Analysis of the thermal effect values determined by the DSC technique, XRD, and FTIR-ATR allowed the evaluation of the crystallinity of the tested materials. Polyethylene is generally considered to be a two-phase system consisting of crystalline and amorphous regions and is a plastic characterized by a significant crystalline phase content. Based on the FTIR-ATR spectra, DSC curves, and XRD, the effect of the filler and the changes occurring in the materials studied resulted in a decrease in the degree of crystallinity and a change in the melting point and crystallization temperature of the polymer matrix were established. Microscopic examinations were carried out to analyze the microstructure of the composites to collect information on the distribution and shape of the filler particles, indicating their size and distribution in the polymer matrix. Furthermore, the use of scanning electron microscopy combined with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) allowed for the microanalysis of the chemical composition of the filler particles. The main aim of the present work is to evaluate and characterize the mechanical, morphological and thermal properties of wastes coming from the textile industry, mainly composed of cotton and polyester. These wastes will be thereafter implemented in commodity plastic such as polyamide, in order to develop new formulations of environmentally friendly materials. The composites were produced by extrusion and injection-molded processes in amounts between 15 wt.% and 60 wt.% of textile waste. With the objective of improving the properties of the materials, silanes were used as a compatibilizer between the textile fibers and the polymeric matrix. The effect of the compatibilizer in the composites was studied together with the effect of the amount of textile fiber added to the composites. Mechanical, thermal, morphological and wettability properties were analyzed for each composite. The results show that the use of silanes improves the interaction especially in those composites with a higher amount of textile waste, offering a balanced mechanical behavior with significantly high quantities. On the other hand, the melting temperature does not vary significantly with the introduction of silanes and textile waste content, although the incorporation of textile waste slightly reduces up to 23% the degradation temperature of the resulting composites. The wettability of the composites is also increased up to 16% with the incorporation of textile waste. Finally, the appearance of the composites with textile waste is strongly influenced by the incorporation of the reinforcement, offering shades close to dark brown in the whole range of compositions. In this study, we successfully realized the hydrolytic ring-opening co-polymerization of ε-caprolactam (CPL) and lysine derivative. A novel antibacterial modified polyamide 6 with a branched structure was obtained after the quaternization of the co-polymers. The co-polymers exhibited a significant increase in zero shear viscosity, melt index and storage modulus at the low frequency region. The quaternized co-polymers displayed thermal properties different from pure PA6 and good mechanical (tensile) properties. The antibacterial activity of the quaternized co-polymers depends on the quaternary ammonium groups' incorporated content. At 6.2 mol% incorporation of quaternary ammonium groups, the strong antibacterial activity has been introduced to the co-polymers. As the quaternary ammonium groups approached 10.1 mol%, the antibacterial polymers demonstrated nearly complete killing of Staphylococcus aureus (Gram positive) and Escherichia coli (Gram negative). A series of ZnCr2−xHoxSe4 microcrystalline spinels (where x = 0.05, 0.075, and 0.10) containing holmium ions in octahedral coordination were obtained by sintering of adequate reactants at high temperatures. The obtained doped materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy, UV–Vis–NIR, molecular field approximation, and XPS spectroscopies. Their thermal properties were also investigated. The doping of the ZnCr2S4 matrix with paramagnetic Ho3+ ions with a content of not more than 0.1 and a screened 4f shell revealed a significant effect of orbital and Landau diamagnetism, a strong reduction in short-range ferromagnetic interactions, and a broadening and shift of the peak of the first critical field by simultaneous stabilization of the sharp peak in the second critical field. These results correlate well with FPLO calculations, which show that Cr sites have magnetic moments of 3.19 µB and Ho sites have significantly larger ones with a value of 3.95 µB. Zn has a negligible magnetic polarization of 0.02 µB, and Se induces a polarization of approximately −0.12 µB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Freezing time stands out as the most critical parameter in ice cream production, significantly influencing the final product's quality and production efficiency. Therefore, it is essential to accurately estimate the freezing time based on ice cream recipes. This research paper focuses on determining the thermal properties of ice cream samples by leveraging insights from previous studies. Moreover, a new specific heat correlation is proposed to account for the latent heat effect of water during the freezing process. The results demonstrated that the new specific heat correlation aligns well with established formulas from previous research as well as experimental results with maximum 2.5% deviation. To validate the accuracy of the proposed numerical model, experimental studies were compared with numerical results for the first time in the context of ice cream freezing inside a mold. Additionally, a parametric analysis was conducted using numerical modelling to discern the relative importance of various production process parameters. Notably, the glycol–water mixture temperature emerged as the most influential parameter affecting freezing time, while the amount of air inside the ice cream was identified as the least significant factor. To enhance the heat-transfer performance of scramjet engines, a numerical simulation was conducted on the heat-transfer process of RP-3 aviation kerosene under supercritical pressure within a horizontal micro-fine circular tube. The intrinsic mechanism of the heat-transfer process was analyzed, summarizing the impacts of mass flux, inlet temperature, and gravitational acceleration. Furthermore, four commonly used buoyancy criterion numbers were compared and evaluated. The results indicate that the heat-transfer process can be divided into five phases: heating inlet phase, normal heat-transfer phase, heat-transfer deterioration phase, heat-transfer enhancement phase, and high-temperature normal heat-transfer phase. The heating inlet phase is significantly influenced by the inlet temperature, while the heat-transfer deterioration is affected both by the thermal property variations of the aviation kerosene and the buoyancy effects. Lower mass flux and hypergravity conditions all exacerbate heat-transfer deterioration. Inlet temperature, however, does not affect the heat-transfer pattern. Among the criteria, Grq/Grth provides the best prediction of buoyancy effects in horizontal circular tubes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
