A method to determine aceclofenac, ketorolac, and sulindac in human urine samples using microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC) has been developed in this study. The optimization of MEEKC conditions was carried out by changing the microemulsion compositions including the buffer pH, borate salt concentration, surfactant concentration, co-surfactant concentration, organic modifier concentration, and oil droplet concentration. The optimum separation of selected drugs was obtained with a composition of microemulsion containing 10 mM borate buffer pH 9, 0.5% sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), 6.6% n-butanol, 6.0% acetonitrile, and 0.8% ethyl acetate. Excellent linearity was obtained in the range concentration of 25 to 200 ppm with r2 > 0.999. Limits of detection (LOD, S/N = 3) and limits of quantification (LOQ, S/N = 10) were 2.72 to 4.75 and 9.08 to 15.85 ppm, respectively. The solid-phase extraction (SPE) method using C-18 as an adsorbent and the solid phase micro-tip extraction (SPMTE) method using multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as an adsorbent were used to clean-up and pre-concentrate the urine samples prior to the MEEKC analysis. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic non-specific intestinal inflammatory disease that affects millions of people worldwide, and current treatment methods have certain limitations. This study aimed to explore the therapeutic potential and mechanism of action of lemairamin (Wgx-50) in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We used dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-treated zebrafish as an inflammatory bowel disease model, and observed the effect of Wgx-50 on DSS-induced colitis inflammation. The results of the study showed that Wgx-50 could reduce the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines induced by DSS and inhibit the recruitment of neutrophils to the site of intestinal injury. Further experiments revealed that Wgx-50 exerted its anti-inflammatory effect by regulating the activation of the Akt pathway. Yellow tea (YT), a slightly fermented tea with a unique yellowing process and mellow taste, is becoming widely popular. Currently, the YT includes bud yellow tea (BYT), small-leaf yellow tea (SYT), and large-leaf yellow tea (LYT) based on maturity of raw materials. Previous studies have shown that YT has outstanding potential in preventing metabolic syndrome. However, the distinct effects and mechanisms of different types of YT on ulcerative colitis (UC) are still unclear. This study investigated the effects and mechanisms of continuous or intermittent intervention of three yellow tea water extracts (YTEs) on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis in CD-1 mice. The results showed that YTE intervention significantly improves the syndrome of DSS-induced UC in mice. Mechanistic studies reveal that YTEs increase the expression levels of tight junction (TJ) proteins and reduce the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the colon by inactivating TLR4/NF-κB/NLRP3. YTE treatment protected intestinal barrier integrity and reduced serum lipopolysaccharide (LPS) levels. Interestingly, our results indicate that large-leaf yellow tea (LYT) has a better alleviating effect than BYT and SYT. YTE intervention before DSS administration has a certain degree of preventive effect on ulcerative colitis, while continuous YTE intervention after DSS induction has a significant reversing effect on the damage caused by DSS. Salt crystallization is a particularly relevant issue in the conservation of limestones used in Cultural Heritage sites. In this study, various facies of limestones were characterized through porosimetric and mechanical tests. The samples were subjected to experiments to determine their resistance to salt crystallization by verifying the number of cycles at which 50% of them began to lose weight. This number of experimental cycles was compared with the result calculated by the analytical procedure of a chemomechanical model found in the literature. Geopolymer foam concrete (GFC), an emerging thermal insulation material known for its environmentally friendly and low-carbon attributes, has gained prominence for its use in bolstering building energy efficiency. A critical challenge in GFC production is foam destabilization by the alkaline environment in which foam is supersaturated with salt. In this study, GFC was prepared by using triterpene saponin (TS), sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as blowing agents, with fly ash as the precursor and calcium carbide slag (CA) combined with Glauber's salt (GS, Na2SO4 ≥ 99%) as the activator. The effect of GFC on mechanical properties was analyzed by examining its fluidity, pore structure, dry density, and compressive strength. The results show that TS has a stable liquid film capable of adapting to the adverse effects of salt supersaturation and alkaline environments. TS is highly stable in the GFC matrix, and so the corresponding pore size is small, and the connectivity is low in the hardened GFC. In addition, the hydration products of GFC exhibit different morphologies depending on the surfactant used. Acridinium esters, due to their capability for chemiluminescence (CL), are employed as indicators and labels in biomedical diagnostics and other fields. In this work, the influence of ionic surfactants, hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride and bromide (CTAC and CTAB, cationic) and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS, anionic) on the CL parameters and mechanism of representative emitter, 10-methyl-9-[(2-methylphenoxy)carbonyl]acridinium trifluoromethanesulphonate (2MeX) in a H2O2/NaOH environment, is studied. Our investigations revealed that the type of surfactant and its form in solution have an impact on the CL kinetic constants and integral efficiencies, while changes in those emission properties resulting from the type of ion (Cl− vs. Br−) are negligible. The major changes were recorded for systems containing surfactants at concentrations higher than the critical micelle concentration. The cationic surfactants (CTAC, CTAB) cause a substantial increase in CL emission kinetics and a moderate increase in its integral efficiency. At the same time, the opposite effect is observed in the case of SDS. Molecular dynamics simulations suggest that changes in emission parameters are likely due to differences in the binding strength of 2MeX substrate with surfactant molecules, which is higher for SDS than for CTAC. The results can help in rational designing of optimal acridinium CL systems and demonstrate their usefulness in distinguishing the pre- and post-micellar environment and the charge of surfactants. The deformulation stage of original drug products, which includes the quantification of critical excipients, is crucial for the successful development of generic drug products of solid dosage form. Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) belongs to the group of critical excipients due to its influence on the bioavailability of drugs, such as metformin. The purpose of this work is to carry out a feasibility study in order to develop a simple, economical, and robust analytical method for the quantification of SLS in metformin-containing tablets after their dissolution in water. Firstly, SLS is extracted with chloroform in acidic conditions, followed by the addition of methylene blue (MB) in order to form a SLS-MB ion pair, which is then measured photometrically at a wavelength of 651 nm. Additionally, interference from matrix components (excipients and APIs) was assessed, and it was found that metformin also forms a blue complex; therefore, this specific extraction method was developed. Other matrix components did not interfere with SLS determination. This method shows a well-estimated precision of 3.3% and accuracy of 5%, a calibration linearity of R2 = 0.99990, and a working range of 0.38 µg/mL to 10 µg/mL of SLS in water. The midpoint of the calibration graph corresponds to the concentration of SLS obtained by dissolving a single tablet in 1 L of water. The study object was slag from the Balkhash copper smelter, obtained by re-melting anode mud containing nonferrous metals. The process flow for processing these slags includes sintering with Na2SO4, Na2CO3, and coal, followed by soda-alkaline leaching of the sinter and extraction of metals from the solution into marketable products. Since sintering is the main operation providing high selectivity, the composition of the products of this process was studied. The main transformations during sintering were determined, and the optimal parameters were identified. The structures of slags and sintered materials obtained during the experiments were studied by electron-probe microanalysis. Sintering was performed at 600–800 °C. The best results for sulphidization of slag components were obtained at 800 °C; a further increase in temperature leads to the smelting of sinter particles and slows down sulphidization. The optimal quantities of additives, based on the weight of the slag, are Na2SO4—45%, Na2CO3—15%, and reducing agent—41%, with a sintering time of 2 h. These conditions enable the sulphidization of non-ferrous metals in the slag to the entire depth of the polymetallic globules. Given the critical role of dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis (UC) mouse models in the appraisal of associated therapeutic drugs, the optimization of the administration method and dosages is of paramount importance. Therefore, UC was induced in mice through the gavage administration of a DSS solution instead of free drinking water. The effects of varying daily dosages (2, 4, 6, and 8 g/kg) and frequencies (once or twice) of administration on the body weight and survival rate of the model mice were evaluated. Concurrently, the inflammatory indicators and tissue sections of the model mice were thoroughly evaluated. The results revealed that when the daily dosage reached 8 g/kg, the dosage exhibited a high level of toxicity, resulting in a high mortality rate among the mice. The DSS administration of 6 g/kg*2 not only elicited conspicuous symptoms, significant weight loss, substantial shortening of the colon, and significant changes in various inflammatory indicators, such as myeloperoxidase (MPO), nitric oxide (NO), reactive oxygen species (ROS), and glutathione (GSH), but it also maintained a high survival rate in the UC mice. A new approach for the thermal reduction of tin dioxide (SnO2) in the carbon/sodium sulfite (Na2SO3) system is demonstrated. The process of tin smelting was experimentally optimized by adjusting the smelting temperature and amounts of the chemical components used for the thermal reduction of SnO2. The numbers obtained are consistent with the thermodynamic characteristics of the system and molar fractions of reactants derived from the proposed mechanism of the SnO2 thermal reduction process. They reveal that the maximum yield of tin is obtained if masses of C, Na2SO3 and SnO2 are approximately in the ratio 1:2:3 and the temperature is set to 1050 °C. The key role in the suggested mechanism is the thermal decomposition of Na2SO3. It was deduced from the available experimental data that the produced sulfur dioxide undergoes carbothermic reduction to carbonyl sulfide—an intermediate product involved in the bulk reduction of SnO2. Replacing sodium sulfite with sodium sulfate, sodium sulfide and even elemental sulfur practically terminated the production of metallic tin. The present work sought to study the mother water of the process and point out alternatives so that the water present in this solution can be recovered and the possibility of recycling it can be analyzed. The following alternatives were adopted: the evaporation of water without reaching the saturation point of the mother water and evaporation beyond the saturation point. For the first case, flash distillation was used to remove unwanted components, followed by an evaporation process. The second case was studied employing salt crystallization, for which crystallizers were used. This study was conducted with Aspen Plus® v12 software, which can represent the desired route, in addition to having data and tools that are suitable for the process modeling and simulation. For the evaporation without crystallization, it was noticed that it was possible to remove 23.89% of the water from the mother water. For the crystallization case, it was found that the mother water solution had dissolved ammonium sulfate for crystallization; however, it was necessary to first precipitate sodium sulfate. In the crystallization of sodium sulfate, it was possible to remove 85.62% of vapor from the mother water solution, containing water, ammonia, and carbon dioxide, thus inferring the possibility of recycling this current to the process. This study shows that it is not appropriate to insert evaporation equipment without thinking about the precipitation of by-products since there would be an increase in the price of the route, with little raw material for reuse. The aim of this in vivo study was to compare total protein present in the salivary films (F) and acquired enamel pellicle (AEP) on eroded and non-eroded surfaces in patients suffering from GORD symptoms with and without GORD diagnosis (GORD, No-GORD). Thirty-nine patients suffering from GORD symptoms and erosive tooth wear on lower first molars and an unaffected posterior occlusal surface in the same quadrant were recruited from Guy's hospital, London. Salivary film and AEP were collected from the eroded and uneroded occlusal surfaces, using 0.5% sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS)-soaked filter papers. Total protein concentration was analysed using bicinchoninic acid assay (BCA). Statistical analysis was conducted using Shapiro–Wilk, ANOVA, and Tukey's tests (p < 0.05), comparing four GDS sample types and GORD vs. No-GORD groups. The level of significance was set as p < 0.05. Data were compared between eroded and uneroded surfaces in the same patient with GORD symptoms, as well as between those with or without a GORD diagnosis (GORD, No-GORD). The AEP total protein concentration from the eroded [2.17 (0.49) mg/mL] and uneroded surfaces [2.24 (0.66) mg/mL] of the GORD group were statistically significantly lower than those on eroded [3.27 (1.01) mg/mL] and uneroded [3.33 (1.57) mg/mL] surfaces in the No-GORD group (p = 0.007) (p = 0.008), respectively. The aim of this study was to experimentally investigate the process of chloride binding and its sulfate-induced release in cementitious materials. The cementitious materials were replaced with hardened cement paste particles (HCPs) with water-to-cement ratios (w/c) of 0.35 and 0.45. A long-term immersion experiment of HCPs in 0.1 M sodium chloride solution was performed to investigate its chloride-binding capacity, and then it was immersed in sodium sulfate solutions with concentrations of 0.1 and 0.5 M to explore the release of chloride binding induced by sulfates. Silver nitrate titration and quantitative X-ray diffraction (QXRD) were used to measure the concentration of free chlorides in the solutions and the content of bound chlorides in HCPs, respectively. The results show that there is a higher chloride-binding capacity in HCPs with a w/c ratio of 0.45 compared to 0.35, and the content of chemically bound chlorides is associated with the formation and decomposition of Friedel's and Kuzel's salts in HCPs. The presence of sulfates can easily result in the release of bound chlorides in Friedel's salt, but it cannot cause a complete release of bound chlorides in Kuzel's salt. Physically bound chlorides are more easily released by sulfates than chemically bound chlorides, and a high w/c ratio or sulfate concentration can increase the release rate of bound chlorides in HCPs. The objective of the present study was to assess the effect of intra-articular Hyaluronic acid (HA) and Chondroitin sulfate (CS) supplementation (Hialurom® Hondro (HH)) on pain symptoms and joint mobility. In total, 60 mg/mL sodium hyaluronate and 90 mg/mL CS were administered to 21 patients (17 females and 4 males) respecting the in-force requirements, excluding patients with some specific comorbidities. In addition to the clinical study (where the pain intensity (severity) and joint mobility were assessed), rheological characterization was conducted evaluating the following parameters: elastic modulus (G′), loss modulus (G″) oscillatory frequency (fc) at 0.5 Hz and 2.5 Hz, crossover frequency (fc), relaxation time (λ) where it was noticed that the addition of chondroitin sulfate (CS) to sodium hyaluronate (SH) significantly enhances and improves the viscoelastic properties, particularly at higher shear frequencies. A significant decrease in pain intensity felt by the subjects was found, from 7.48 (according to Wong–Baker scale)—pain close to 8 (the patient is unable to perform most activities), to more reduced values of 5.86—at 6 weeks after injection, 4.81—at 3 months after injection, and 5.24—at 6 months after injection, improvements in symptoms was fast and durable. Data related to the evolution of joint mobility show that at 6 weeks after injection, the mobility of joints increased by 17.8% and at 6 months by 35.61%. No serious adverse events were reported with undesired effects so that they would impose additional measures. Better resistance to enzymatic degradation and free radicals could be expected from the synergic combination of sodium hyaluronate and chondroitin sodium sulfate, this having a special importance for the patients, granting them the ability to perform more ample movements and reducing dependency on attendants, thus increasing quality of life. Microalgae are a valuable source of lipids, proteins, and pigments, but there are challenges in large-scale production, especially in harvesting. Existing methods lack proven efficacy and cost-effectiveness. However, flocculation, an energy-efficient technique, is emerging as a promising solution. Integrating surfactants enhances microalgal harvesting and disruption simultaneously, reducing processing costs. This study investigated cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB), and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) for harvesting Tetraselmis sp. strains (75LG and 46NLG). CTAB exhibits superior results, with 88% harvesting efficiency at 1500 and 2000 mg L−1 for 75LG and 46NLG, respectively, for 60 min of sedimentation—thus being able to reduce the operating time. Beyond evaluating harvesting efficiency, our study explored the kinetics of the process; the modified Gompertz model led to the best fit. Furthermore, the largest kinetic constants were observed with CTAB, thus highlighting its efficacy in optimising the microalgal harvesting process. With the incorporation of the suggested enhancements, which should be addressed in future work, CTAB could hold the potential to optimise microalgal harvesting for cost-effective and sustainable large-scale production, eventually unlocking the commercial potential of microalgae for biodiesel production. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an immunologically complex disorder involving genetic, microbial, and environmental risk factors. Its global burden has continued to rise since industrialization, with epidemiological studies suggesting that ambient particulate matter (PM) in air pollution could be a contributing factor. Prior animal studies have shown that oral PM10 exposure promotes intestinal inflammation in a genetic IBD model and that PM2.5 inhalation exposure can increase intestinal levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. PM10 and PM2.5 include ultrafine particles (UFP), which have an aerodynamic diameter of <0.10 μm and biophysical and biochemical properties that promote toxicity. UFP inhalation, however, has not been previously studied in the context of murine models of IBD. Here, we demonstrated that ambient PM is toxic to cultured Caco-2 intestinal epithelial cells and examined whether UFP inhalation affected acute colitis induced by dextran sodium sulfate and 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid. C57BL/6J mice were exposed to filtered air (FA) or various types of ambient PM reaerosolized in the ultrafine size range at ~300 μg/m3, 6 h/day, 3–5 days/week, starting 7–10 days before disease induction. No differences in weight change, clinical disease activity, or histology were observed between the PM and FA-exposed groups. Wheat bran (WB) is a low-value by-product of the wheat milling industry. Solid-state fermentation with Rhizopus oligosporus is performed to improve WB's nutritional quality (RH). Twenty-five mice (11-week-old C57BL/6N male mice) were divided into three groups. The first group was fed a control diet (n = 8), the second group a 10% WB-supplemented diet (n = 8), and the last group had a 10% RH-supplemented diet (n = 9). The diet treatment was administered for 4 days before dextran sodium sulfate (DSS, 3% in drinking water) was administered for 9 days. RH supplementation prevented bodyweight loss and reduced the disease activity index in mice. An increase in the level of SCFAs in mouse intestines was detected post-RH supplementation, suggesting that SCFAs might have contributed to its anti-colitis effect. Metabolome analysis was conducted to explore other bioactive compounds in RH. R. oligosporus fermentation significantly increased the amounts of ergothioneine, arginine, branched-chain amino acids, and adenosine in wheat bran. All of these compounds are known to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capacities. These bioactive compounds might also have contributed to the RH's ability to ameliorate DSS-induced colitis. The aim of this paper is to investigate the aging mechanism of asphalt in the sea salt erosion environment from a rheological point of view. In order to simulate the real pavement aging process in the sea salt erosion environment, base asphalt and Styrene−Butadiene−Styrene (SBS)-modified asphalt were selected for salt environment aging tests. The asphalt samples were aged via a thin film oven test (TFOT) and a pressure aging vessel (PAV) test. Then, thermo-oxidizing conditions were created after the samples were immersed in salt solution, mixed with four different concentrations of sodium chloride (NaCl) and sodium sulphate (Na2SO4), to investigate the aging state of asphalt. Temperature scan (TS), frequency scan (FS), and multiple stress creep and recovery (MSCR) tests performed using a Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) were used to investigate the effects on the rheological properties of aged asphalt in a salt environment. The results showed that both base asphalt and SBS-modified asphalt were aged to different degrees under mixed salt solutions. The two asphalt samples aged in a salt environment showed increased hardness. SBS-modified asphalt exhibited higher aging resistance compared with base asphalt in the sea salt environment. However, due to the degradation of the SBS modifier and the aging of base asphalt, the properties of the SBS-modified asphalt showed more obvious complexity with changes in salt solution concentrations. Simple Summary: Ulcerative colitis significantly impacts the quality of life of individuals. Although several therapeutic drugs are available, their efficacy remains suboptimal. Therefore, developing more effective treatment strategies remains to be of great significance. Traditional Chinese Medicine has attracted interest due to its multiple components, multifaceted targets, and minimal side effects. In this study, we reported that Zhenqi Granule, a Traditional Chinese Medicine preparation, exhibited both preventive and therapeutic efficacy that effectively mitigated the symptoms of Dextran Sulfate Sodium-induced ulcerative colitis in mice. The potential mechanism was further analyzed through network pharmacological analysis, suggesting that the active components of Zhenqi Granule target multiple inflammatory pathways. Our study provides a promising strategy for the prevention and treatment of ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an inflammatory bowel disease that causes chronic inflammation in the large intestine. The etiology of UC is complex and incompletely understood, with potential contributing factors including genetic susceptibility, environmental influences, immune dysregulation, and gut barrier dysfunction. Despite available therapeutic drugs, the suboptimal cure rate for UC emphasizes the necessity of developing novel therapeutics. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has attracted great interest in the treatment of such chronic inflammatory diseases due to its advantages, such as multi-targets and low side effects. In this study, a mouse model of Dextran Sulfate Sodium (DSS)-induced acute colitis was established and the efficacy of Zhenqi Granule, a TCM preparation composed of the extractives from Astragali Radix and Fructus Ligustri Lucidi, was evaluated. The results showed that treatment with Zhenqi Granule prior to or post-DSS induction could alleviate the symptoms of colitis, including weight loss, diarrhea, hematochezia, colon length shortening, and pathological damage of colon tissues of the DSS-treated mice. Further, network pharmacology analysis showed that there were 98 common targets between the active components of Zhenqi Granule and the targets of UC, and the common targets were involved in the regulation of inflammatory signaling pathways. Our results showed that Zhenqi Granule had preventive and therapeutic effects on acute colitis in mice, and the mechanism may be that the active components of Zhenqi Granule participated in the regulation of inflammatory response. Egyptian Faience, a revolutionary innovation in ancient ceramics, was used for crafting various objects, including amulets, vessels, ornaments, and funerary figurines, like shabtis. Despite extensive research, many aspects of ancient shabti production technology, chemistry and mineralogy remain relatively understudied from the 21st to the 22nd Dynasty, belonging to a recovered 19th-century private collection. The fragments' origin is tentatively identified in the middle Nile valley in the Luxor area. Our study focused on a modest yet compositionally interesting small collection of shabti fragments to provide information on the glaze's components and shabti's core. We found that the core is a quartz and K-feldspars silt blended with an organic component made of plastic resins and vegetable fibres soaked with natron. The studied shabti figurines, after being modelled, dried, and covered with coloured glaze, were subjected to a firing process. Sodium metasilicate and sulphate compounds formed upon contact of the glaze with the silica matrix, forming a shell that holds together the fragile inner matrix. The pigments dissolved in the sodic glaze glass, produced by quartz, K-feldspars, and natron frit, are mainly manganese (Mn) and copper (Cu) compounds. The ratio Cu2O/CaO > 5 produces a blue colour; if <5, the glaze is green. In some cases, Mg and As may have been added to produce a darker brown and an intense blue, respectively. Reaction minerals provided information on the high-temperature firing process that rapidly vitrified the glaze. One of the promising raw materials for the synthesis of geopolymers is perlite, which is a natural low-calcium aluminosilicate. This research studied the physical, mechanical and microstructural characteristics of perlite-based geopolymers modified with different mineral additives that were prepared using different methods of introducing the alkali components and curing conditions. The experimental results of the consolidated perlite-based geopolymer pastes showed that curing conditions and the method of introducing the alkali component into the geopolymer matrix had a minimal effect on the average density while demonstrating a significant boost in compressive strength. So, after thermal treatment, the compressive strength increased by 0.63 to 11.4 times for the mixes when fresh alkali solution was used and by 0.72 to 12.8 times for the mixes with the 24 h conditioned alkali solution. Maximum-strength spikes from 1.1 MPa to 13.2 MPa and from 0.7 MPa to 9.7 MPa were observed for the mixes with kaolin when prepared with fresh and conditioned alkali solutions, respectively. It was also observed that thermal treatment facilitates the compaction of the matrix structure by 18% and 1% for the non-modified mix and the mix modified with Portland cement. Perlite-based geopolymers modified with Portland cement and citrogypsum demonstrated a significant reduction in the initial and final setting times with both methods of introducing the alkali solution. On the surface of mixes modified with citrogypsum, regardless of the curing conditions and method of introducing the alkali component, an efflorescence substance was observed. The microstructural analysis of the consolidated geopolymer perlite-based pastes containing citrogypsum demonstrated a loose structure and the presence of efflorescence, which can be associated with a retardation in interaction processes between alkali cations and the aluminosilicate component. EDS analysis demonstrated that the presence of such elements as oxygen, sodium and sulfur may indicate the efflorescence of unreacted sodium hydroxide (NaOH), citrogypsum (CaSO4) and the products of their interaction in the form of crystalline hydrates of sodium sulfate (Na2SO4). This paper investigates the effects of sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) on the wettability of the surface of the two most common recycled plastics in refrigeration equipment: HIPS (high-impact polystyrene) and ABS (acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene). These plastics, in the form of flakes, were identified on the basis of their FTIR spectra, and then, they were subjected to a study of contact angles using the sessile droplet method. The solutions for the angle analysis included tap water with the addition of SLES. The results of this study showed that at SLES concentrations of 0.1 g/L and 0.2 g/L, the differences in the contact angles for HIPS and ABS were 10.76° and 10.10°, respectively. This research confirmed the potential of using SLES as a support for the flotation separation of plastics with similar densities and surface characteristics, such as HIPS and ABS. Implantable and wearable bioelectronic systems can enable tailored therapies for the effective management of long-term diseases, thus minimising the risk of associated complications. In this context, glucose fuel cells hold great promise as in- or on-body energy harvesters for ultra-low-power bioelectronics and as self-powered glucose sensors. We report here the generation of gold nanostructures through a gold electrodeposition method in a soft template for the abiotic electrocatalysis of glucose in glucose fuel cells. Two different types of soft template were used: a lipid cubic phase-based soft template composed of Phytantriol and Brij®-56, and an emulsion-based soft template composed of hexane and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS). The resulting gold structures were first characterised by SAXS, SEM and TEM to elucidate their structure, and then their electrocatalytic activity towards glucose was compared in both a three-electrode set-up and in a fuel cell set-up. The Phytantriol/Brij®-56 template led to a nanofeather-like Au structure, while the hexane/SDS template led to a nanocoral-like Au structure. These templated electrodes exhibited similar electrochemical active surface areas (0.446 cm2 with a roughness factor (RF) of 14.2 for Phytantriol/Brij®-56 templated nanostructures and 0.421 cm2 with an RF of 13.4 for hexane/SDS templated nanostructures), and a sensitivity towards glucose of over 7 μA mM−1 cm−2. When tested as the anode of an abiotic glucose fuel cell (in a phosphate-buffered solution with a glucose concentration of 6 mM), a maximum power density of 7 μW cm−2 was reached; however the current density in the case of the fuel cell with the Phytantriol/Brij®-56 templated anode was approximately two times higher, reaching the value of 70 μA cm−2. Overall, this study demonstrates two simple, cost-effective and efficient strategies to manipulate the morphology of gold nanostructures, and thus their catalytic property, paving the way for the successful manufacturing of functional abiotic glucose fuel cells. Hydrophobic ion pairing (HIP) complexation was found to be an efficient approach in modulating the release and enhancing the stability and encapsulation of hydrophilic macromolecules such as proteins in hydrophobic nano/microcarriers. The present work strives to develop and optimize the preparation of the HIP complex of the antimicrobial enzyme lysozyme (LYZ) with the ion-pairing agent (IPA) sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) relying on the quality-by-design (QbD) approach. The quality target product profile (QTPP) includes the achievement of maximal lipophilicity in a reversible manner to enable the maintenance of biological activity. The related critical quality attributes (CQAs) were defined as complexation efficacy, complex stability, enzyme recovery and activity. Three risk assessment (RA) tools were used to identify and rank the critical process parameters (CPPs) and critical material attributes (CMAs). From this assessment, the pH of the medium, LYZ:SDS molar ratio and drying conditions were determined as high-risk factors that need to be investigated. To the best of our knowledge, for the first time, electrostatic titration was used as a smart approach to determine the optimum molar ratio at different pH values. Based on the predefined CQAs, pH 8 with an LYZ/SDS molar ratio of 1:8 was found to be the optimal condition for complexation efficiency and recovery (%) of a biologically active enzyme. A cost-effective drying process based on a ventilated oven was developed, which resulted in complex qualities comparable to those obtained by the commonly used freeze-drying method. In a nutshell, the optimum conditions for the preparation of the LYZ/SDS HIP complex were efficiently facilitated by the rational application of QbD principles and the utilization of efficient electrostatic titration and ventilated oven-drying methods. An excessive inflammatory response of the gastrointestinal tract is recognized as one of the major contributors to ulcerative colitis (UC). Despite this, effective preventive approaches for UC remain limited. Rosmarinic acid (RA), an enriched fraction from Perilla frutescens, has been shown to exert beneficial effects on disease-related inflammatory disorders. However, RA-enriched perilla seed meal (RAPSM) and perilla seed (RAPS) extracts have not been investigated in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced UC in mice. RAPSM and RAPS were extracted using the solvent-partitioning method and analyzed with high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). Mice with UC induced using 2.5% DSS for 7 days were pretreated with RAPSM and RAPS (50, 250, 500 mg/kg). Then, the clinical manifestation, colonic histopathology, and serum proinflammatory cytokines were determined. Indeed, DSS-induced UC mice exhibited colonic pathological defects including an impaired colon structure, colon length shortening, and increased serum proinflammatory cytokines. However, RAPSM and RAPS had a protective effect at all doses by attenuating colonic pathology in DSS-induced UC mice, potentially through the suppression of proinflammatory cytokines. Concentrations of 50 mg/kg of RAPSM and RAPS were sufficient to achieve a beneficial effect in UC mice. This suggests that RAPSM and RAPS have a preventive effect against DSS-induced UC, potentially through alleviating inflammatory responses and relieving severe inflammation in the colon. Five new sulfated arylpyrrole and arylpyrrolone alkaloids, denigrins H–L (1–5), along with two known compounds, dictyodendrin B and denigrin G, were isolated from an extract of a New Zealand Dictyodendrilla c.f. dendyi marine sponge. Denigrins H–L represent the first examples of sulfated denigrins, with denigrins H and I (1–2), as derivatives of denigrin D, containing a pyrrolone core, and denigrins J–L (3–5), as derivatives of denigrin E (6), containing a pyrrole core. Their structures were elucidated by interpretation of 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic data, ESI, and HR-ESI-MS spectrometric data, as well as comparison with literature data. Neutrophil-myeloperoxidase (MPO) is a heme-containing peroxidase which produces excess amounts of hypochlorous acid during inflammation. While pharmacological MPO inhibition mitigates all indices of experimental colitis, no studies have corroborated the role of MPO using knockout (KO) models. Therefore, we investigated MPO deficient mice in a murine model of colitis. Wild type (Wt) and MPO-deficient mice were treated with dextran sodium sulphate (DSS) in a chronic model of experimental colitis with three acute cycles of DSS-induced colitis over 63 days, emulating IBD relapse and remission cycles. Mice were immunologically profiled at the gut muscoa and the faecal microbiome was assessed via 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Contrary to previous pharmacological antagonist studies targeting MPO, MPO-deficient mice showed no protection from experimental colitis during cyclical DSS-challenge. We are the first to report drastic faecal microbiota shifts in MPO-deficient mice, showing a significantly different microbiome profile on Day 1 of treatment, with a similar shift and distinction on Day 29 (half-way point), via qualitative and quantitative descriptions of phylogenetic distances. Herein, we provide the first evidence of substantial microbiome shifts in MPO-deficiency, which may influence disease progression. Upcycling Cr-containing sulfate waste into catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation reaction benefits both pollution mitigation and economic sustainability. In this study, FeCrO3/Fe2O3 catalysts were successfully prepared by a simple hydrothermal method using Cr-containing sodium sulfate (Cr-SS) as a Cr source for efficient conversion and stable treatment of Cr. The removal rate of Cr in Cr-SS can reach 99.9% at the optimized hydrothermal conditions. When the synthesized catalysts were activated and used for the CO2 hydrogenation reaction, a 50% increase in CO2 conversion was achieved compared with the catalyst prepared by impregnation with a comparable amount of Cr. According to the extraction and risk assessment code (RAC) of the Reference Office of the European Community Bureau (BCR), the synthesized FeCrO3/Fe2O3 is risk-free. This work not only realizes the detoxification of the Cr-SS but transfers Cr into stable FeCrO3 for application in a catalytic field, which provides a strategy for the harmless disposal and resource utilization of Cr-containing hazardous waste. Ulcerative colitis (UC) is one of the inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) that is characterized by systemic immune system activation. This study was performed to assess the alleviative effect of administering an aqueous extract of Eucommia ulmoides leaves (AEEL) on cognitive dysfunction in mice with dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis. The major bioactive compounds of AEEL were identified as a quinic acid derivative, caffeic acid-O-hexoside, and 3-O-caffeoylquinic acid using UPLC Q-TOF/MSE. AEEL administration alleviated colitis symptoms, which are bodyweight change and colon shortening. Moreover, AEEL administration protected intestinal barrier integrity by increasing the tight junction protein expression levels in colon tissues. Likewise, AEEL improved behavioral dysfunction in the Y-maze, passive avoidance, and Morris water maze tests. Additionally, AEEL improved short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) content in the feces of DSS-induced mice. In addition, AEEL improved damaged cholinergic systems in brain tissue and damaged mitochondrial and antioxidant functions in colon and brain tissues caused by DSS. Also, AEEL protected against DSS-induced cytotoxicity and inflammation in colon and brain tissues by c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and the toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling pathway. The oral delivery strategy of natural anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory agents has attracted great attention to improve the effectiveness of ulcerative colitis (UC) treatment. Herein, we developed a novel orally deliverable nanoparticle, carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC)-modified astaxanthin (AXT)-loaded nanoparticles (CMC-AXT-NPs), for UC treatment. The CMC-AXT-NPs were evaluated by appearance, morphology, particle size, ζ-potential, and encapsulation efficiency (EE). The results showed that CMC-AXT-NPs were nearly spherical in shape with a particle size of 34.5 nm and ζ-potential of −30.8 mV, and the EE of CMC-AXT-NPs was as high as 95.03%. The CMC-AXT-NPs exhibited preferable storage stability over time and well-controlled drug-release properties in simulated intestinal fluid. Additionally, in vitro studies revealed that CMC-AXT-NPs remarkably inhibited cytotoxicity induced by LPS and demonstrated superior antioxidant and anti-inflammatory abilities in Raw264.7 cells. Furthermore, CMC-AXT-NPs effectively alleviated clinical symptoms of colitis induced by dextran sulfate sodium salt (DSS), including maintaining body weight, inhibiting colon shortening, and reducing fecal bleeding. Importantly, CMC-AXT-NPs suppressed the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β and ameliorated DSS-induced oxidative damage. Our results demonstrated the potential of CMC-modified nanoparticles as an oral delivery system and suggested these novel AXT nanoparticles could be a promising strategy for UC treatment. Heterozygous carriers of the glucocerebrosidase 1 (GBA) L444P Gaucher mutation have an increased risk of developing Parkinson's disease (PD). The GBA mutations result in elevated alpha synuclein (aSyn) levels. Heterozygous mice carrying one allele with the L444P mutation knocked-into the mouse gene show increased aSyn levels and are more sensitive to motor deficits following exposure to the neurotoxin (1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine) MPTP than wild-type mice. Paraquat (PQ), a herbicide, increases PD risk in most studies. Its effects on the brain involve alterations in the gut microbiome. Exposure to dextran sulfate sodium (DSS), a mouse model of colitis, can be used to determine whether gut microbiome alterations are sufficient to induce PD-relevant phenotypes. We rederived the A53T-L444P and A53T mouse lines to assess whether PQ, PQ in combination with radiation exposure (IR), and DSS have differential effects in A53T and A53T-L444P mice and whether these effects are associated with alterations in the gut microbiome. PQ and PQ + IR have differential effects in A53T and A53T-L444P mice. In contrast, effects of DSS are only seen in A53T-L444P mice. Exposure and genotype modulate the relationship between the gut microbiome and behavioral performance. High rates of resistance to antibiotics are associated with healthcare-related infections, thus demonstrating the urgent need for effective antimicrobials against these maladies. The present study aims to determine the chemical composition of essential oil (EO) from Clausena anisata leaves and evaluate their antibacterial activity against selected nosocomial bacteria. To this end, one kilogram (1 kg) of fresh leaves of C. anisata was washed and boiled with 500 mL of distilled water for 2−4 h using a Clevenger apparatus. The oil was then collected in an Erlenmeyer, dried using anhydrous sodium sulfate, bottled in a tinted glass bottle and refrigerated at 4 °C before analysis. Next, the as-prepared oil was analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The essential oil was further tested against a panel of selected nosocomial bacteria, including Staphylococcus and Klebsiella species, among others, by microdilution using a resazurin assay to determine the minimum inhibitory and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MICs and MBCs, respectively). As a result, 0.77% of EO was extracted from fresh leaves of C. anisata. The GC-MS analysis revealed that the as-prepared essential oil contained E-anethole (70.77%), methyl isoeugenol (13.85%), estragole (4.10%), γ-terpinene (3.33%), myrcene (2.82%) and sabinene (0.77%), with E-anethole being the major constituent. Twenty-two compounds were identified in the EO of C. anisata leaves through gas chromatography. Upon antibacterial testing against selected nosocomial pathogens, the E-anethole-rich essential oil exhibited MIC and MBC values ranging from 3.91 to 125 µg/mL and 7.81 to 125 µg/mL, respectively, indicative of a bactericidal orientation of the plant's essential oil (MIC/MBC ratio < 4). This novel contribution highlights the scientific validation of the use of C. anisata leaves in the traditional treatment of various infectious diseases. However, toxicity and pharmacokinetic studies, mechanistic bases of the antibacterial action, and in vivo antibacterial experiments of the E-anethole-rich EO of C. anisata should be investigated to successfully use this plant in the treatment of infectious diseases. Sandstones of the Lourinhã Formation were studied. Alveolization is the major form of weathering on the façades of monuments near Peniche in the western region of Portugal. Salt weathering is an important cause of this degradation form. Stones of specimens, similar to those found in these ancient buildings, were used for an experimental program of artificial salt ageing through the use of sodium chloride, calcium chloride, and sodium sulfate solutions, all at 10% (w/w). Salt weathering follow-up was carried out viz. the assessment of the degradation effect on these specimens of lower values of porosity under crystallization–dissolution cycles. Sodium chloride and sodium chloride with calcium sulfate were the more deleterious solutions, causing failure of the specimens after at least 40 cycles of immersion/drying. Surfaces of the sandstone specimens of variety A showed the onset of the alveolization form due to the use of a saline solution of sodium chloride with calcium sulfate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To promote the large-scale recycling of solid waste, the hydration characteristics of blended cement with different amounts of GGBS (ground granulated blast-furnace slag) and SS (steel slag) were investigated. The optimum blending amounts of GGBS and SS in cement were 40% and 10% by mass, and the optimum dosage of Na2SO4 in the C50-S40-SS10 (50 wt.% cement–40 wt.% slag–10 wt.% steel slag) system was 2 wt.%. The flexural and compressive strengths of the C50-S40-SS10 system after adding 2 wt.% Na2SO4 are 57.95% and 9.28% higher than that of pure cement at 28 d. XRD, FT-IR and Ca(OH)2 content analysis were chosen to investigate the hydration products of pure cement and blended cement. The results show that GGBS enhanced the hydration of both cement and SS. And GGBS contributed to the generation of calcium silicoaluminate hydrate (C–A–S–H) in the blended cement system. The addition of Na2SO4 promoted the hydration reaction and contributed to the generation of ettringite (AFt) in the ternary system. The hydration heat evolution results showed that GGBS and SS can reduce the hydration heat of cement. Na2SO4 had similar effects and delayed the time of AFt conversion to monosulfide calcium sulphoaluminate (AFm). The expansion induced by sulfate attack on cement-treated aggregates (SACA) is a well-known problem that can be solved. It causes obvious heaves in road bases and railway subgrades. In this paper, the effects of the sodium sulfate content, cement content, degree of compaction, sulfate types, attack types, aluminum ion supply, concentration of curing sulfate solution, and temperature on the expansion behavior induced by SACA were investigated over 60 days in the laboratory. Based on the Sobol sensitivity analysis method, the influence of the sensitivity of each factor on the expansion was quantitatively analyzed, and the dominant factor of expansion was proposed. Results show that sulfate content is the domain factor of expansion that is induced by SACA, and it presents a logarithmic function relationship with strain. The 0.5% sodium sulfate content is the minimum sulfate content which causes the expansion that is induced by SACA. When the sulfate content is less than 1%, the expansion induced by SACA is minor. When the sulfate content is between 1% and 3%, the expansion behavior is expressed in four stages as follows: rapid strain increase, followed by a short stagnation period, then a significant strain increase and, finally, constant strain. When the sulfate content is greater than 5%, there are two stages comprising the expansion behavior as follows: the rapid strain increases and constant strain occurs. Greater sulfate content, greater degree of compaction, and lower temperature have positive effects on the expansion induced by SACA. The cement content does not have a consistent effect on expansion behavior. Compared with a sodium sulfate attack, both the reaction rate and expansion of cement-treated aggregates that are attacked by gypsum are smaller, and the attack period is also longer. When the sulfate content is greater than 1%, the addition of kaolin promotes the progression of the expansion induced by SACA. A small amount of water is sufficient for the demand for the sulfate attack. When the sulfate content is at a certain level, the expansion induced by SACA that is under external attack is much smaller than the expansion that is under internal attack. This study is expected to serve as a reference for future research on the mechanics of SACA, and it attempts to provide theoretical support for amending expansions that are induced by SACA. Chicoric acid (CA) has been reported to exhibit biological activities; it remains unclear, however, whether CA could regulate colitis via modulation of the gut microbiota and metabolites. This study aimed to assess CA's impact on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis, the gut microbiota, and metabolites. Mice were induced with 2.5% DSS to develop colitis over a 7-day period. CA was administered intragastrically one week prior to DSS treatment and continued for 14 days. The microbial composition in the stool was determined using 16S rRNA sequencing, while non-targeted metabolomics was employed to analyze the metabolic profiles of each mouse group. The results show that CA effectively alleviated colitis, as evidenced by an increased colon length, lowered disease activity index (DAI) and histological scores, and decreased tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) expression levels. CA intervention restored the structure of gut microbiota. Specifically, it decreased the abundance of Bacteroidetes and Cyanobacteria at the phylum level and Bacteroides, Rosiarcus, and unclassified Xanthobacteraceae at the genus level, and increased the abundance of unclassified Lachnospiraceae at the genus level. Metabolomic analysis revealed that CA supplementation reversed the up-regulation of asymmetric dimethylarginine, N-glycolylneuraminic acid, and N-acetylneuraminic acid, as well as the down-regulation of phloroglucinol, thiamine, 4-methyl-5-thiazoleethanol, lithocholic acid, and oxymatrine induced by DSS. Our current research provides scientific evidence for developing CA into an anti-colitis functional food ingredient. The nonlinear optical properties of carbon dots have been in the spotlight in recent years. In light of the complexity and diversity of factors affecting the nonlinear optical properties of carbon dots, how to reveal the origin and physical mechanism of the nonlinear optical properties of carbon dots accurately has become a problem. In this work, a template-free method was designed to prepare carbon dots via solid-phase reaction with phloroglucinol as a single carbon source and sodium bisulfate as the catalyst. This method is simple, green, safe, and easy to be prepared on a large scale. Three carbon dots with different luminous colors were obtained by simply adjusting the reaction temperature. The rise of reaction temperature affects the surface functional groups, and then hinders the luminescence of surface states, leading to the change of luminescence properties. The nonlinear optical properties of carbon dots were analyzed by the Z-scan technique. Surprisingly, all carbon dots have nonlinear optical responses, but there are differences in performance. Results prove the increase in sp2 domains may contribute to the significant improvement of the nonlinear optical properties of carbon dots, indicating a direction to improve the nonlinear optical properties of carbon dots. A method utilizing high-performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection (HPLC–FLD) has been developed and refined for the simultaneous detection of florfenicol (FF) and its metabolite florfenicol amine (FFA) along with three fluoroquinolone (ciprofloxacin (CIP), enrofloxacin (ENR), and sarafloxacin (SAR)) residues in different parts of eggs (whole egg, egg yolk, and egg albumen). The QuEChERS ("Quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe") procedure utilized 0.1 M disodium EDTA solution, water, and acetonitrile as extractants; sodium sulfate, sodium chloride, and trisodium citrate as dehydrating salts; and N-propylethylenediamine and C18 as adsorbents. A dual-channel FLD method was utilized to analyze the target compounds using an XBridge BEH C18 chromatographic column (4.6 mm × 150 mm, 5 μm). The mobile phase was employed isocratically using a solution of 0.01 M sodium dihydrogen phosphate, 0.005 M sodium dodecyl sulfate, and 0.1% triethylamine (pH 4.8) in combination with acetonitrile at a ratio of 65:35 (V/V). The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) of the analytes ranged from 0.03 to 1.5 µg/kg and from 0.1 to 5.0 µg/kg, respectively. The recoveries of the analytes in the blank egg samples ranged from 71.9% to 94.8% when reference standard concentrations of the LOQ, half of the maximum residual limit (MRL), MRL, and twice the MRL were added. The parameters of the presented protocol were validated and subsequently applied to the analysis of real samples, demonstrating the applicability and reliability of the method. This paper's purpose was to evaluate the interaction between three imidazole derivatives, (2-methyl-1H-imidazol-1-yl)methanol (SAM3), 1,1′-methanediylbis(1H-benzimidazole (AM5) and (1H-benzo[d]imidazol-1-yl)methanol 1-hydroxymethylbenzimidazole (SAM5) on the one hand, and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) on the other, as antifungal combinations against Candida spp. Inhibitory activity was assessed using the agar diffusion method and Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and showed moderate inhibitory activity of single imidazole derivatives against Candida spp. The mean value of MIC ranged from 200 µg/mL (SAM3) to 312.5 µg/mL (SAM3), while for SDS the MIC was around 1000 µg/mL. When used in combination with SDS, the imidazole derivatives demonstrated an improvement in their antifungal activity. Their MIC decreased over five times for AM5 and over seven times for SAM3 and SAM5, respectively, and ranged from 26.56 µg/mL (SAM3) to 53.90 µg/mL (AM5). Most combinations displayed an additive effect while a clear synergistic effect was recorded in only a few cases. Thus, the FIC Index (FICI) with values between 0.311 and 0.375 showed a synergistic effect against Candida spp. when SDS was associated with SAM3 (three strains), SAM5 (two strains) and AM5 (one strain). The association of imidazole derivatives with SDS led to the increased release of cellular material as well as the intracellular influx of crystal violet (CV), which indicated an alteration of the membrane permeability of Candida spp. cells. Sodium sulfate (SS) is a neutral activator. SS-activated alkali-activated slag cement (AASC) has lower shrinkage. However, it sets slowly, and the mechanical property develops slowly. Slaked lime (SL) is an alkaline substance widely used in industry that can be used as an activator in AASC. In this paper, SL was used alone, and SL and SS were mixed together to prepare AASC. The effects of SL content on the setting time, shrinkage properties and mechanical strength of AASC were investigated. Furthermore, the mechanism was explored with the analysis of microscopic tests. The results showed that SS could not be used as an activator alone, while SL could be used as an activator alone, and SS could be combined with SL to prepare AASC. The setting time of the SL system or the SS-SL mix system decreased with the increase in SL. The mechanical properties of the SL system were poor. The SS-SL system showed the highest mechanical properties when SL was 3%. With the increase in SL, the autogenous and drying shrinkage of the SL system increased, while the former of the SS-SL system increased and the latter decreased. At the same time, due to the different changes in pore structure and mesoporous volume in the two systems, the drying shrinkage showed different changes. A depressant is essential to the effective flotation-based separation of ilmenite and forsterite, based on their comparable physicochemical characteristics. In this work, dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) was initially introduced as a depressant, to aid in the separation of ilmenite and forsterite. Comparing the DSS to conventional natural starch, the results indicate that the forsterite exerts a greater depression over the ilmenite. The difference in recovery of ilmenite and forsterite was 75.44% at 10 mg/L of DSS dosage. The DSS was chemisorbed strongly onto the forsterite surface via Mg active sites, whereas its interaction with the ilmenite surface via physisorption was weak, based on the XPS and molecular-dynamics-simulation analyses. The results of the AFM and QCM-D investigations showed that the DSS adsorption layer on the forsterite surface was larger than those on the ilmenite surface. Rapid urbanisation causes a rise in the need for infrastructure, which in turn fuels the creation of additional concrete and further increases cement supplies. Activation of illite-based clay mineral and usage in concrete production is one of the sustainable ways to address the cement industry anthropogenic issues. This study evaluates the durability properties of water transport (water absorption, and capillary water absorption), and resistance to aggressive environments (5% solutions of hydrochloric acid, HCl; sodium sulphate, Na2SO4; and calcium chloride, CaCl2) of meta-illite calcined clay (MCC)-based high-performance concrete (HPC). For this purpose, concrete was produced with 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30% MCC content in partial substitution of CEM II. Results from the water absorption tests indicate an average percentage value of 3.57%, 3.35% and 2.52% for all the observed mixes at 28, 56 and 90 days, respectively, with MCCC-10 HPC having an average best value of 2.23% across the curing ages. On all observed days, the 5 to 15% cement replacements had very close average water sorptivity value of 0.125 ± 0.001 mm/min0.5 with the control mix (0.113 ± 0.011 mm/min0.5). The aggressive environments exposure findings of the hardened MCC-based HPC specimens of 10 to 20% recorded an approximately 15% compressive strength loss in HCl, Na2SO4 and CaCl2 solutions over the 90 days of curing. In all, the HPC mixes of 5 to 15% MCC content obtained an average durability performance factor of 89%. As a result, these findings imply that MCC can replace cement in up to 15% of HPC production. In order to evaluate the feasibility of surface coatings in improving the performance of RCC under salt spray conditions, sodium silicate (SS), isooctyl triethoxy silane (IOTS), and polyurea (PUA) were used as surface coatings to prepare four types of roller-compacted concrete (RCC): reference RCC, RCC-SS, RCC-IOTS, and RCC-PUA. A 5% sodium sulfate solution was used to simulate a corrosive marine environment with high temperatures, high humidity, and high concentrations of salt spray. This study focuses on investigating various properties, including water absorption, abrasion loss, compressive strength, dynamic elastic modulus, and impact resistance. Compared to the reference RCC, the 24 h water absorption of RCC-SS, RCC-IOTS, and RCC-PUA without salt spray exposure decreased by 22.8%, 77.2%, and 89.8%, respectively. After 300 cycles of salt spray, the abrasion loss of RCC-SS, RCC-IOTS, and RCC-PUA reduced by 0.3%, 4.4%, and 34.3%, respectively. Additionally, their compressive strengths increased by 3.8%, 0.89%, and 0.22%, and the total absorbed energy at fracture increased by 64.8%, 53.2%, and 50.1%, respectively. The accumulated amount of nickel–iron slag has increased with the rapid development of the nickel-iron industry. To determine a method for comprehensively utilizing nickel–iron slag, triaxial compression tests of nickel–iron slag cement-based composite materials under the action of sodium sulfate were conducted, and the effects of the sodium sulfate concentration on the stress-strain relation, shear strength, cohesion, and internal friction angle of the composite materials were analyzed. In addition, the influence mechanism of the nickel–iron slag content and sodium sulfate concentration on the composite was examined. The results revealed that the stress–strain curve of the nickel–iron slag cement-based composites reflected softening. With the increase in the sodium sulfate concentration, the brittleness increased, while the shear strength, cohesion, and internal friction angle decreased; the addition of nickel–iron slag slowed down the rate at which these parameters decrease. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed that nickel–iron slag can improve the internal structure of the cement composite soil, enhance its compactness, and improve its corrosion resistance. The optimum nickel–iron slag content of 14% can improve the cementitious composites' resistance to sodium sulfate erosion in terms of solid waste utilization and cementitious soil performance. The results obtained can provide technical parameters for preparing and designing cement-based composite materials as well as certain theoretical significance and engineering reference value. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a notable group of indoor air pollutants released by household products. These substances are commonly employed as solvents in industrial operations, and some of them are recognized or suspected to be cancer-causing or mutagenic agents. Due to their high volatility, VOCs are typically present in surface waters at concentrations below a few micrograms per liter. However, in groundwater, their concentrations can reach levels up to thousands of times higher. This study analyses the applicability of the photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing of VOCs in aqueous medium. Tungsten oxide and bismuth vanadate photoanodes were tested for PEC sensing of xylene, toluene, and methanol in sodium chloride and sodium sulfate electrolytes. The crystalline structure and morphology of coatings were analyzed using XRD and SEM analyses. Photoelectrochemical properties were evaluated using cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results of the study show that aromatic compounds tend to block the surface of the photoelectrode and interfere with the PEC sensing of other substances. WO3 photoanode is found to be suitable for the PEC sensing of methanol under the mild conditions in aqueous electrolytes; however, electrode engineering and assay optimization are required to achieve better detection limits. The results of this research on the electrochemical behavior of Cu24Zn5Al alloy in a 0.1 mol/dm3 sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) solution containing 1-phenyl-5-mercaptotetrazole (PMT) are presented in this paper. The influence of PMT concentration, chloride ion concentration, and pre-treatment were examined. The influence of pre-treatment was studied in terms of the effect of the immersion time of the electrode in the appropriate inhibitor solution. After selecting the optimal immersion time, its effect on the behavior of the Cu24Zn5Al alloy was tested in a 0.1 mol/dm3 solution of sodium sulfate in the presence of different concentrations of chloride ions. Research shown that with the increase of PMT concentration, the anodic current density around the corrosion potential decreases, indicating that PMT behaves as a corrosion inhibitor for Cu24Zn5Al alloy. Background and Objectives: Urtica dioica, a source of bioactive functional compounds, provides nutritional and gastrointestinal therapeutic benefits. This study attempted to investigate the prophylactic coloprotective action of an aqueous extract of Urtica dioica (AEUD) on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis (UC). Materials and Methods: Phenolic compounds, total sugar, and mineral levels were determined in AEUD. Then, AEUD at different doses (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg, BW, p.o.) and mesalazine (MESA) as a standard treatment (100 mg/kg, BW, p.o.) were given orally for 21 days. Acute colitis was induced by administering drinking water with 5% (w/v) DSS for 7 days. Body weight variation, fecal occult blood, and stool consistency were determined daily. The severity of colitis was graded according to colon length, disease activity index (DAI), histological evaluations, and biochemical alterations. Rats orally administered DSS regularly developed clinical and macroscopic signs of colitis. Results: Due to its richness in phenolic and flavonoid compounds (247.65 ± 2.69 mg EAG/g MS and 34.08 ± 0.53 mg EQt/g MS, respectively), AEUD markedly ameliorated DAI, ulcer scores, colon length shortening, colonic histopathological changes, and hematological and biochemical modifications. Taken together, AEUD treatment notably (p < 0.01) suppressed DSS-induced UC by reducing oxidative stress via lowering MDA/H2O2 production and stimulating the effect of enzyme antioxidants as well as attenuating inflammation by decreasing CRP levels by 79.5% between the DSS and DSS + AEUD-50 groups compared to the MESA group (75.6%). Conclusions: AEUD was sufficient to exert a coloprotective effect that might be influenced by its bioactive compounds' anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capabilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lactiplantibacillus plantarum D13 shows antistaphylococcal and antilisterial activity, probably due to the synthesis of a presumptive bacteriocin with antibiofilm capacity released in the cell-free supernatant (CFS), whose inhibitory effect is enhanced by cocultivation with susceptible strains. An in silico analysis of the genome of strain D13 confirmed the pln gene cluster. Genes associated with plantaricin biosynthesis, structure, transport, antimicrobial activity, and immunity of strain D13 were identified. Furthermore, the predicted homology-based 3D structures of the cyclic conformation of PlnE, PlnF, PlnJ, and PlnK revealed that PlnE and PlnK contain two helices, while PlnF and PlnJ contain one and two helices, respectively. The potential of the strain to modulate the intestinal microbiota in healthy or dextran sulphate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis mouse models was also investigated. Strain D13 decreased the disease activity index (DAI) and altered the gut microbiota of mice with DSS-induced colitis by increasing the ratio of beneficial microbial species (Allobaculum, Barnesiella) and decreasing those associated with inflammatory bowel disease (Candidatus Saccharimonas). This suggests that strain D13 helps to restore the gut microbiota after DSS-induced colitis, indicating its potential for further investigation as a probiotic strain for the prevention and treatment of colitis. To achieve an adjustable setting time and significantly improved early strength of a new type of sulphoaluminate cement-based double-liquid grouting material (SACDL), the effects of calcium formate, sodium sulfate, lithium carbonate, and a composite early strength agent on the setting hardening and early hydration behavior of SACDL paste were studied by means of setting time, fluidity, compressive strength, and viscosity tests. The results showed that the adsorption and osmosis of calcium formate, the complex decomposition of sodium sulfate, the precipitation polarization of lithium carbonate and the synergistic action of the composite early strength agent could accelerate the early hydration rate of SACDL, shorten the coagulation time, and improve the early strength of SACDL. The composite effect of 0.8% calcium formate and 0.5% sodium sulfate is the most significant in promoting coagulation and early strength; the initial setting time and final setting time of the slurry were shortened to 5 min and 10 min, respectively; and the 3 h compressive strength was capable of reaching 16.7 MPa, 31% higher than that of the blank group. In addition, X-ray diffraction and SEM morphology observation were used to study the composition of the hydration products and the evolution of the microstructure, which revealed the early hydration mechanism of SACDL under the synergistic effect of the composite early strength agent: (1) The solubility of tricalcium aluminate (C3A) and dihydrate gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) increased under the low content composite early strength agent condition, which increased the ettringite (AFt) formation rate. HCOO− was able to penetrate the hydration layers of tricalcium silicate (C3S) and dicalcium silicate (C2S), accelerating the dissolution of C3S and C2S and promoting the early hydration of SACDL. (2) Under the condition of a high dosage of the composite early strength agent, the further increase in Ca2+ concentration promoted the crystallization nodules and precipitation of CH and accelerated the formation of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) gel.
