Ballistic helmets are individual pieces of armor equipment designed to protect a soldier's head from projectiles and fragments. Although very common, these helmets are responsible for several casualties due to their significant back face deformation and low ballistic resistance to projectiles. Therefore, to enhance helmet performance, studies have focused on the development of new materials and new ballistic protection solutions. The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate a new ballistic solution using thermoplastic-based matrices. The first matrix was based on high-density polyethylene (HDPE). The second matrix was based on HDPE modified with exfoliated montmorillonite (MMT). The main manufacturing processes of a thermoplastic-based ballistic helmet are presented, along with its ballistic performance, according to the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) standard 0106.01 and an investigation of its failure mechanisms via a non-destructive technique. All the helmets resulted in level III-A ballistic protection. The postimpact helmets were scanned to evaluate the back face deformation dimensions, which revealed that the global cone deformation was deeper in the HDPE than in the HDPE/MMT helmet. The failure analysis revealed an overall larger deformation area in the HDPE and HDPE/MMT helmet delamination zones in the regions with a large radius of curvature than in the zones with the lowest radius, which is in accordance with previous simulations reported in the literature. New configurations of 2-D phased arrays are proposed in this paper for reducing the number of phase shifters. This design methodology is based on the use of a novel coherently radiating periodic structures (CORPSs) block for 2-D phased arrays. Two new antenna systems for 2-D phased arrays are studied and analyzed utilizing the CORPSs blocks of four inputs and nine outputs. These CORPSs feeding blocks are applied in a smart way to feed the planar antenna arrays by generating the required phase plane and reducing the number of control ports. Interesting results are provided based on the experimental measurements and full-wave simulations. These results illustrate a great reduction of the active devices (phase shifters), providing a good design compromise in terms of the scanning range and side lobe level performance. Furthermore, the provided results illustrate a maximum reduction capability in the number of phase shifters of 81%, considering a scanning range of ±30° in azimuth and ±30° in elevation. A raised cosine distribution is applied to reach side lobe levels of −19 dB for ±18° and −17 dB for ±30° in elevation. These benefits could be of interest to designers of phased antenna systems. In this paper, a six-degree-of-freedom analog tactile probe with a new, simple, and robust mechanical design is presented. Its design is based on the use of one elastomeric ring that supports the stylus carrier and allows its movement inside a cubic measuring range of ±3 mm. The position of the probe tip is determined by three low-cost, noncontact, 2D PSD (position-sensitive detector) sensors, facilitating a wider application of this probe to different measuring systems compared to commercial ones. However, several software corrections, regarding the size and orientation of the three LED light beams, must be carried out when using these 2D sensors for this application due to the lack of additional focusing or collimating lenses and the very wide measuring range. The development process, simulation results, correction models, experimental tests, and calibration of this probe are presented. The results demonstrate high repeatability along the X-, Y-, and Z-axes (2.0 µm, 2.0 µm, and 2.1 µm, respectively) and overall accuracies of 6.7 µm, 7.0 µm, and 8.0 µm, respectively, which could be minimized by more complex correction models. Featured Application: This paper suggests that, in the case of a fixed retainer twist effect diagnosis, the retainer should be immediately removed, even if the patient is not keen on re-treatment in a short perspective.Background: One of the rarest complications of fixed orthodontic retention is inadvertent tooth movement of the teeth bonded to the retainer. A 25-year-old patient presented at the orthodontist as she was preoccupied about the position of the lower teeth. The aim of this case report was to present a follow-up of anterior teeth alignment after fixed retainer removal and to analyze the structure of the removed fixed orthodontic retainer in a patient suffering from a twist effect. Materials and Methods: The retainer that caused inadvertent movement has been removed, and subsequent teeth displacement was assessed with scan superimposition. The retainer structure and diameter were analyzed with a laser confocal microscope. Results: The superimposition showed significant improvements in the position of the teeth. The sole removal of the activated retainer resulted in a partial self-correction of the twist effect. Under microscopic observation, changes in the dimensions of the wire were found but were too small to cause significant changes in tooth position. Conclusions: A fixed retainer should always be removed when a twist effect is diagnosed. The wire sections covered with composite are less likely to untwist. In the presented case, the changes in the dimensions of the round retainer wire could not have led to changes in the teeth's positions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We evaluated and compared the biomechanical properties of Leukocyte-and Platelet Rich Fibrin L-PRF clots and membranes derived from smoker and nonsmoker donors. Twenty venous-blood donors (aged 18 to 50 years) were included after signing informed consent forms. L-PRF clots were analyzed and then compressed to obtain L-PRF membranes. L-PRF clot and membrane samples were tested in quasi-static uniaxial tension and the stress–stretch response was registered and characterized. Furthermore, scanning electron microscope representative images were taken to see the fibrin structure from both groups. The analysis of stress–stretch curves allowed us to evaluate the statistical significance in differences between smoker and nonsmoker groups. L-PRF membranes showed a stiffer response and higher tensile strength when compared to L-PRF clots. However, no statistically significant differences were found between samples from smokers and nonsmokers. With the limitations of our in vitro study, we can suggest that the tensile properties of L-PRF clots and membranes from the blood of smokers and nonsmokers are similar. More studies are necessary to fully characterize the effect of smoking on the biomechanical behavior of this platelet concentrate, to further encourage its use as an alternative to promote wound healing in smokers. Stand-off detection of latent traces avoids the scene alteration that might occur during close inspection by handheld forensic lights. Here, we describe a novel sensor, named Crime Light Imaging (CLI), designed to perform high-resolution photography of targets at a distance of 2–10 m and to visualize some common latent traces. CLI is based on four high-power illumination LEDs and one color CMOS camera with a motorized objective plus frontal filters; the LEDs and camera could be synchronized to obtain short-exposure images weakly dependent on the ambient light. The sensor is integrated into a motorized platform, providing the target scanning and necessary information for 3D scene reconstruction. The whole system is portable and equipped with a user-friendly interface. The preliminary tests of CLI on fingerprints at distance of 7 m showed an excellent image resolution and drastic contrast enhancement under green LED light. At the same distance, a small (1 µL) blood droplet on black tissue was captured by CLI under NIR LED, while a trace from 15 µL semen on white cotton became visible under UV LED illumination. These results represent the first demonstration of true stand-off photography of latent traces, thus opening the way for a completely new approach in crime scene forensic examination. The goal of the current study was to determine the mechanical proprieties of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and the improved compound, the graphene-based PMMA, with Zn and Ag and to compare the results. Scanning electron microscopy analysis of the samples before and after the mechanical test was conducted. The compression behavior, flexural properties, tensile strength, and shape of the samples were all investigated and compared between the variants of PMMA. Commercially available polymethylmethacrylate was used (Orthocryl®—Dentaurum, Ispringen, Germany) with the salt and pepper technique according to the manufacturer's instructions to produce 20 samples for each mechanical trial with standard cylinders (4 mm diameter × 8 mm length) for compression, parallelepipedal prisms for flexing (2 mm × 2 mm × 25 mm) and flat samples for traction. There was no statistical difference in the mechanical proprieties of the samples evaluated, although there were values that could suggest significance. The graphene-based PMMA demonstrated good mechanical proprieties, like the commercially available PMMA, and appears promising for future clinical use based on its multiple advantages. This paper presents a novel approach to synthesizing curved reflectarrays using Geometrical Optics (GO). It introduces the concepts of virtual normal and path length shift, which enable a vector-based formulation of the problem that can be solved using ray tracing techniques. The formulation is applied for the design of two different versions of a Dual Bifocal Reflectarray with a parabolic main surface and a flat subreflectarray. The first version aims to enhance the performance of the multibeam antenna by providing a focal ring located at the feed cluster plane. The second version focuses on improving the scanning characteristics of the antenna in the horizontal plane by incorporating two foci. The synthesis procedure yields samples of the path length shift or its derivatives. To reconstruct the phase distribution, an interpolation scheme is employed and described in this paper. Numerical results are presented for both the focal-ring and two-foci configurations, demonstrating the feasibility of this solution for multibeam or scanning satellite antennas operating in the Ka. Calcium boosters have been used as a supplement for fluoride toothpastes to repair the dental tissues and reduce dentin permeability. This in vitro study aimed to characterize the regenerative and protective effects of the treatment of dental tissues with a fluoride–silicon-rich toothpaste associated with a calcium booster. Bovine enamel and dentin blocks (n = 5) were obtained (4 × 4 × 6 mm). A fluoride–silicon-rich toothpaste and a calcium booster were used to brush the enamel and dentin both immediately and five days afterwards. The outcomes were then compared to those of the untreated control group. After that, the specimens were cross-sectioned. SEM was used to evaluate the micromorphology of the surface and cross-section. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) was used to determine the elemental analyses (weight%). After treatment for 5 days with a booster/silicon-rich toothpaste, EDS analysis demonstrated that it induced a significant mineral change. It was also able to form a protective silicon-enriched mineral layer on both enamel and dentin surfaces. It was demonstrated in vitro that a fluoride–silicon-rich toothpaste associated with a calcium booster regenerates the dental tissues, remineralizing the enamel structure and occluding the dentin tubules. Gradual development is moving from standard visual content in the form of 2D data to the area of 3D data, such as points scanned by laser sensors on various surfaces. An effort in the field of autoencoders is to reconstruct the input data based on a trained neural network. For 3D data, this task is more complicated due to the demands for more accurate point reconstruction than for standard 2D data. The main difference is in shifting from discrete values in the form of pixels to continuous values obtained by highly accurate laser sensors. This work describes the applicability of autoencoders based on 2D convolutions for 3D data reconstruction. The described work demonstrates various autoencoder architectures. The reached training accuracies are in the range from 0.9447 to 0.9807. The obtained values of the mean square error (MSE) are in the range from 0.059413 to 0.015829 mm. They are close to resolution in the Z axis of the laser sensor, which is 0.012 mm. The improvement of reconstruction abilities is reached by extracting values in the Z axis and defining nominal coordinates of points for the X and Y axes, where the structural similarity metric value is improved from 0.907864 to 0.993680 for validation data. In spectrometer measurement, it is very important to accurately calibrate the wavelength of all target characteristic spectra. Although wavelength calibration methods have long been investigated, no techniques have been designed for the scanning, double-layer, secondary diffraction, linear-array CCD spectrometer, to the best of our knowledge. Based on the grating diffraction equation and experimental results, a mathematical model of wavelength calibration was established for the scanning, double-layer, secondary diffraction, linear-array CCD spectrometer. In this study, a robust, full-screen, wavelength calibration algorithm is proposed, based on the related working principle and the requirements of both accuracy and robustness. The detailed steps are as follows. First, we established a wavelength calibration model at central pixels, following the grating diffraction equation. Then, according to the relationship between the difference in pixels and the feedback values of the grating ruler, a model was established to show the association between these factors. Finally, we combined the two models and built a full-screen wavelength calibration model. We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate that the proposed calibration algorithm is an excellent calibration tool, which can conveniently and accurately calibrate the wavelengths of central and non-central pixels at the same time. The IEEE 802.15.4 is a popular standard used in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and the Internet of Things (IoT) applications. In these networks, devices are organized into groups formally known as personal area networks (PAN) which require a bootstrap procedure to become operational. Bootstrap plays a key role in the initialization and maintenance of these networks. For this reason, this work presents our implementation and performance analysis for the ns-3 network simulator. Specifically, this bootstrap implementation includes the support of three types of scanning mechanisms (energy scan, passive scan, and active scan) and the complete classic association mechanism described by the standard. Both of these mechanisms can be used independently by higher layers protocols to support network initialization, network joining, and maintenance tasks. Measuring the dimensions of personalized devices can provide relevant information for the production of future such devices used in various medical specialties. Difficulties with standardizing such measurement and obtaining high accuracy, alongside cost-intensive measuring methodologies, has dampened interest in this practice. This study presents a methodology for automatized measurements of personalized medical appliances of variable shape, in this case an orthodontic appliance known as Tübingen Palatal Plate (TPP). Parameters such as length, width and angle could help to standardize and improve its future use. A semi-automatic and custom-made program, based on Rhinoceros 7 and Grasshopper, was developed to measure the device (via an extraoral scanner digital file). The program has a user interface that allows the import of the desired part, where the user is able to select the necessary landmarks. From there, the program is able to process the digital file, calculate the necessary dimensions automatically and directly export all measurements into a document for further processing. Ergonomic assessment and validation are important in designing sustainable forest operations. Measurement and grading play a central role in the wood supply chain and updated solutions have started to emerge for such activities. Procuring biometric data by mobile scanning platforms has been shown to have a high potential in replacing traditional wood measurement methods, but no assessments were carried out to see if these solutions are sustainable from an ergonomics point of view. Based on more than 63 k still images, this study evaluates the working postures of three measurement options, namely, traditional measurement, scanning by a smartphone, and scanning by a commercial laser scanner. The OWAS method was used as an assessment framework to compute the postural risk indexes. A correspondence analysis was implemented to explore the association between the studied work tasks and severity of exposure, and the postural similarity of tasks was evaluated by the Canberra metric. The use of digital measurement solutions seems to be better from a postural point of view since their risk indexes were well below 200. In contrast, traditional wood measurement tasks produced postural risk indexes that were close to 250. By considering the body components, digital measurement solutions seemed to indicate a distinct postural profile. Moreover, the digital solutions stood well apart in the range of the first two action categories, indicating no urgent need for postural improvement, which was not the case for manual measurements. The main conclusion of the study is that state-of-the-art digital solutions are better from a postural point of view. For full validation, population-level studies should be carried out. This paper deals with the concept of the automated calibration design for inspection systems using laser sensors. The conceptual solution is based on using a laser sensor and its ability to scan 3D surfaces of inspected objects in order to create a representative point cloud. Problems of scanning are briefly discussed. The automated calibration procedure for solving problems of errors due to non-precise adjustment of the mechanical arrangement, possible tolerances in assembly, and their following elimination is proposed. The main goal is to develop a system able to measure and quantify the quality of produced objects in the environment of Industry 4.0. Laboratory measurements on the experimental stand, including the principal software solution for automated calibration of laser sensors suitable for gear wheel inspection systems are presented. There is described design of compensation eccentricity by Fourier transform and sinusoidal fitting to identify and suppress the first harmonic component in the data with high precision measuring. In many scientific fields, the continuous operation of ultra-stable lasers is crucial for applications. To speed up the frequency stabilization process in case of the occurence of unexpected interruptions, a prompt frequency stabilization approach based on an improved mean shift algorithm is proposed and verified with a homemade laser system. We developed a double-loop feedback controller to steer the laser frequency with fast and slow channels, respectively. In this study, an improved mean shift algorithm is utilized to intelligently search for the transmission signal, which involves adaptively updating the sliding window radius and incorporating a Gaussian kernel function to update the shift vector. The number of lock points on the left and right sides of the central point determines the scanning direction to search for the transmission signal quickly. The laser is intentionally interrupted 306 times within 10,000 s to evaluate the relocking performance. The median auto-locking time of the laser is improved from 16 s to 4 s. By beating with another ultra-stable laser system, the laser frequency instability is measured to be less than 2.1 × 10 − 14 and the linewidth is 5 Hz. Surface laser structuring of electrical steel sheets can be used to manipulate their magnetic properties, such as energy losses and contribute to a more efficient use. This requires a technology such as low coherence interferometry, which makes it possible to be coupled directly into the existing beam path of the process laser and enables the possibility for an 100% inspection during the process. It opens the possibility of measuring directly in the machine, without removing the workpiece, as well as during the machining process. One of the biggest challenges in integrating an LCI measurement system into an existing machine is the need to use a different wavelength than the one for which the optical components were designed. This results in an offset between the measurement and processing spot. By integrating an additional scanning system exclusively for the measuring beam and developing a compensation model for the non-linear spot offset, this can be adaptively corrected by up to 98.9% so that the ablation point can be measured. The subject of this article is material research carried out on the ruins of a medieval castle located in west-central Poland. This facility was built at the beginning of the 15th century by the Order of St. John, and during its long life, it was subjected to many reconstructions. Unfortunately, in 1975, it was destroyed by fire. Since then, it has been left in a state of advanced ruin, exposed to climatic influences without any protection. The subject of the research was to assess the possibility of maintaining such buildings in a severely degraded condition while ensuring their technical efficiency. The article discusses a particular instance of "consolidation" applied to a structure in a state of historical, architectural, and structural ruin. After the diagnosis, it was determined that the structure should be safeguarded using a minimally invasive method. The purpose of these activities was to answer the question of whether the structure could be left to continue operating despite failing to meet the requirements of current standards and regulations while posing an additional danger to itself and the environment,. This goal was achieved by obtaining a considerable amount of data on the condition of the materials embedded in the masonry structure, thanks to which the initial parameters for conducting an assessment of the technical condition of the damaged masonry structure and evaluating the degree of its danger were developed. The results of the research and analysis carried out and described in this article can be used in other similar situations where saving national heritage objects through "artificial modern" strengthening will be unsafe and will lead to a loss of their authenticity. We still have a long way to go to develop a comprehensive method for "in situ" diagnosis of heterogeneous masonry structures, so we should use possible techniques and knowledge to conduct such assessments and propose rescue methods for historically valuable objects in a way that could minimize the damage and that can "easily" disappear from our surroundings. Each study should have a specific purpose, not only research but also a long-term perspective, making it possible to leave material for further research and analysis, including testing new research methods in real conditions of its installation.

Early identification and treatment of malignant melanoma is crucial to prevent mortality. The aim of this work was to describe the uptake, profile of users and service outcomes of a mole scanning service in the community pharmacy setting in the UK. In addition, health care costs saved from the perspective of general practice were estimated. The service allowed patients to have concerning skin lesions scanned with a dermatoscopy device which were analyzed remotely by clinical dermatology specialists in order to provide recommendations for the patient. Patients were followed up to ascertain the clinical outcome. Data were analyzed for 6355 patients and 9881 scans across 50 community pharmacies. The majority of the scans required no further follow-up (n = 8763, 88.7%). Diagnosis was confirmed for 70.4% (n = 757/1118) of scans where patients were recommended to seek further medical attention. Of these, 44.3% were ultimately defined as normal (n = 335) and 6.2% as malignant melanoma (n = 47/757). An estimated 0.7% of scans taken as part of the service led to a confirmed diagnosis of malignant melanoma. This service evaluation has shown that a mole scanning service available within community pharmacies is effective at triaging patients and ultimately playing a part in identifying diagnoses of malignant melanoma. The investigation of planar coils of differing topologies, when combined with a magnetostrictive amorphous ribbon to form a stress-sensitive self-inductor, is an active research area for applications as stress or pressure sensors. Four topologies of planar coil (Circular, Mesh, Meander, and Square) have been constructed using copper track on 30 mm wide PCB substrate. The coils are energized to draw 0.4 A and the resulting magnetic field distribution is observed with a newly developed three-dimensional magnetic field scanner. The system is based on a variably angled Micromagnetics® STJ-020 tunneling magneto-resistance sensor with a spatial resolution of 5-10 μm and sensitivity to fields of less than 10 A/m. These experimental results are compared with the fields computed by ANSYS Maxwell® finite element modelling of the same topologies. Measured field shape and strength correspond well with the results of modelling, including direct observation of corner and edge effects. Three-dimensional analysis of the field shape produced by the square coil, isolating the components H(x) and H(z), is compared with the three-dimensional field solutions from modelling. The finite element modelling is validated and the accuracy and utility of the new system for three-dimensional scanning of general stray fields is confirmed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work presents a laterally rotating micromachined platform integrated under optical waveguides to control the in-plane propagation direction of light within a die to select one of multiple outputs. The platform is designed to exhibit low constant optical losses throughout the motion range and is actuated electrostatically using an optimized circular comb drive. An angular motion of ±9.5° using 180 V is demonstrated. To minimize the optical losses between the moving and fixed parts, a gap-closing mechanism is implemented to reduce the initial air gap to submicron values. A latch structure is implemented to hold the platform in place with a resolution of 0.25° over the entire motion range. The platform was integrated with silicon nitride waveguides to create a crossbar switch and preliminary optical measurements are reported. In the bar state, the loss was measured to be 14.8 dB with the gap closed whereas in the cross state it was 12.2 dB. The application of DNA microarrays for high throughput analysis of genetic regulation is often limited by the fluorophores used as markers. The implementation of multi-scan techniques is limited by the fluorophores’ susceptibility to photobleaching when exposed to the scanner laser light. This paper presents combined mechanical and chemical strategies which enhance the photostability of cyanine 3 and cyanine 5 as part of solid state DNA microarrays. These strategies are based on scanning the microarrays while the hybridized DNA is still in an aqueous solution with the presence of a reductive/oxidative system (ROXS). Furthermore, the experimental setup allows for the analysis and eventual normalization of Förster-resonance-energy-transfer (FRET) interaction of cyanine-3/cyanine-5 dye combinations on the microarray. These findings constitute a step towards standardization of microarray experiments and analysis and may help to increase the comparability of microarray experiment results between labs. People with severe motor disabilities have extreme access difficulties with all kinds of web services especially when they want not only to surf the web, but also write some text, e.g., to participate in an e-activity. Several problems arise when using traditional scanning systems, such as the low text entry rate, the time consuming task of learning the scan matrix layout, or simply, the poor visibility of the web page due to the large surface needed to display the complete scan matrix on the screen. We propose a reduced virtual keyboard based on scanning with only one switch as input device. The scan matrix consists of only three cells, so ambiguity is present due to the assignment of 26 characters to the three keys. Word-level and character-level disambiguation modes are explored using a mathematical model, and the text entry rates for an expert user were 15.9 and 10.3 words per minute respectively, using a scan period of 0.5 seconds. LiDAR sensors are a key technology for enabling safe autonomous cars. For highway applications, such systems must have a long range, and the covered field of view (FoV) of >45° must be scanned with resolutions higher than 0.1°. These specifications can be met by modern MEMS scanners, which are chosen for their robustness and scalability. For the automotive market, these sensors, and especially the scanners within, must be tested to the highest standards. We propose a novel measurement setup for characterizing and validating these kinds of scanners based on a position-sensitive detector (PSD) by imaging a deflected laser beam from a diffuser screen onto the PSD. A so-called ray trace shifting technique (RTST) was used to minimize manual calibration effort, to reduce external mounting errors, and to enable dynamical one-shot measurements of the scanner's steering angle over large FoVs. This paper describes the overall setup and the calibration method according to a standard camera calibration. We further show the setup's capabilities by validating it with a statically set rotating stage and a dynamically oscillating MEMS scanner. The setup was found to be capable of measuring LiDAR MEMS scanners with a maximum FoV of 47° dynamically, with an uncertainty of less than 1%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The fit of a lower limb prosthetic socket is critical for user comfort and the quality of life of lower limb amputees. Sockets are conventionally produced using hand-crafted patient-based casting techniques. Modern digital techniques offer a host of advantages to the process and ultimately lead to improving the lives of amputees. However, commercially available scanning equipment required is often expensive and proprietary. Smartphone photogrammetry could offer a low cost alternative, but there is no widely accepted imaging technique for prosthetic socket digitisation. Therefore, this paper aims to determine an optimal imaging technique for whole socket photogrammetry and evaluate the resultant scan measurement accuracy. A 3D printed transtibial socket was produced to create digital and physical twins, as reference models. The printed socket was photographed from 360 positions and simplified genetic algorithms were used to design a series of experiments, whereby a collection of photos were processed using Autodesk ReCap. The most fit technique was used to assess accuracy. The accuracy of the socket wall volume, surface area and height were 61.63%, 99.61% and 99.90%, respectively, when compared to the digital reference model. The scanned model had a wall thickness ranging from 2.075 mm at the top to 7.758 mm towards the base of the socket, compared to a consistent thickness of 2.025 mm in the control model. The technique selected did not show sufficient accuracy for clinical application due to the degradation of accuracy nearer to the base of the socket interior. Simple Summary: A sound understanding of wildlife health is required to inform disease management and mitigation measures in order to help safeguard public, livestock, companion animal and wildlife health. Whilst multiple countries in Europe have schemes for wildlife health surveillance (WHS) in place that monitor the disease conditions that affect free-living wildlife, these vary in scope and scale. In 2018, the Network for WHS of the European Wildlife Disease Association hosted a meeting where representatives from countries with variable levels of current WHS were invited to share knowledge and experience of how their programmes began or were expanded. Through a series of presentations, the events that led to the start-up and expansion of WHS programmes were highlighted, such as the creation of action plans and collaboration through partnership formation. Challenges to development were identified, including limited funding and logistical difficulties around data sharing and the harmonisation of methods. Following a panel discussion, a series of practical recommendations were formulated, offering guidance on how to overcome key challenges for the instigation of national WHS programmes. It is hoped that this resource will provide a useful tool to help support the creation and expansion of WHS programmes in Europe and beyond. Whilst multiple countries in Europe have wildlife health surveillance (WHS) programmes, they vary in scope. In many countries, coordinated general surveillance at a national scale is not conducted and the knowledge of wildlife health status in Europe remains limited. Learning lessons from countries with established systems may help others to effectively implement WHS schemes. Presentations were given by invited representatives of European countries with different WHS levels. Events that led to the start-up and fostered growth spurts of WHS were highlighted, including action plan creation, partnership formation, organisation restructuring and appraisal by external audit. Challenges to programme development, such as a lack of funding, data sharing, infrastructural provision and method harmonisation, were explored. Recommendations to help overcome key challenges were summarised as: understanding and awareness; cross-sectoral scope; national-scale collaboration; harmonisation of methods; government support; academic support; other funding support; staff expertise and capacity; leadership, feedback and engagement; and threat mitigation and wildlife disease management. Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is a 3D imaging technique, widely used in many applications such as augmented reality, automotive, machine vision, spacecraft navigation and landing. Achieving long-ranges and high-speed, most of all in outdoor applications with strong solar background illumination, are challenging requirements. In the introduction we review different 3D-ranging techniques (stereo-vision, projection with structured light, pulsed-LiDAR, amplitude-modulated continuous-wave LiDAR, frequency-modulated continuous-wave interferometry), illumination schemes (single point and blade scanning, flash-LiDAR) and time-resolved detectors for LiDAR (EM-CCD, I-CCD, APD, SPAD, SiPM). Then, we provide an extensive review of silicon- single photon avalanche diode (SPAD)-based LiDAR detectors (both commercial products and research prototypes) analyzing how each architecture faces the main challenges of LiDAR (i.e., long ranges, centimeter resolution, large field-of-view and high angular resolution, high operation speed, background immunity, eye-safety and multi-camera operation). Recent progresses in 3D stacking technologies provided an important step forward in SPAD array development, allowing to reach smaller pitch, higher pixel count and more complex processing electronics. The mean radiant temperature (MRT) is an indicator for evaluating the radiant heat environment near occupants and is determined by the radiant heat exchange between the occupants and their surroundings. To control various heating and cooling systems according to the occupants' thermal comfort, it is essential to consider MRTs in the real-time evaluation of thermal environment. This study proposes a pan–tilt infrared (IR) scanning method to estimate the MRTs at multiple occupant locations in real buildings. The angle factor was calculated by defining the specific classification criteria for dividing the entire indoor surface into sub-surfaces. The coupling IR camera and pan–tilt motor were applied to enable storing data pairs of IR thermal image frame (IR image frame) and pan–tilt angle so each surface area taken by the IR camera can have its direction information. The measurement method of the mean surface temperature using the pan–tilt IR system was presented. The pan–tilt IR system hardware and MRT monitoring software were developed. An experiment was performed to verify the applicability of the proposed pan–tilt IR scanning method. By comparing the surface temperatures measured using a contact thermometer and the proposed IR system, the contact thermometer could cause inaccurate measurement of surfaces with a non-uniform distribution of temperature. The difference between surface temperatures increased by up to 15 °C and, accordingly, the MRT distributions differed by up to 6 °C within the same space. The proposed IR scanning method showed good applicability in various aspects. This paper reports that the MRT has a significant effect on the occupants' thermal comfort and also suggests considering MRTs in the real-time evaluation of thermal environment to control various heating and cooling systems appropriately. Whilst the assessment of body composition is routine practice in sport, there remains considerable debate on the best tools available, with the chosen technique often based upon convenience rather than understanding the method and its limitations. The aim of this manuscript was threefold: (1) provide an overview of the common methodologies used within sport to measure body composition, specifically hydro-densitometry, air displacement plethysmography, bioelectrical impedance analysis and spectroscopy, ultra-sound, three-dimensional scanning, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and skinfold thickness; (2) compare the efficacy of what are widely believed to be the most accurate (DXA) and practical (skinfold thickness) assessment tools and (3) provide a framework to help select the most appropriate assessment in applied sports practice including insights from the authors' experiences working in elite sport. Traditionally, skinfold thickness has been the most popular method of body composition but the use of DXA has increased in recent years, with a wide held belief that it is the criterion standard. When bone mineral content needs to be assessed, and/or when it is necessary to take limb-specific estimations of fat and fat-free mass, then DXA appears to be the preferred method, although it is crucial to be aware of the logistical constraints required to produce reliable data, including controlling food intake, prior exercise and hydration status. However, given the need for simplicity and after considering the evidence across all assessment methods, skinfolds appear to be the least affected by day-to-day variability, leading to the conclusion 'come back skinfolds, all is forgiven'. Organic contaminants significantly limit the bioactivity of titanium implants, resulting in the degradation known as the ageing of titanium. To reactivate the surfaces, they can be photofunctionalized, i.e., irradiated with C-range ultraviolet (UVC) light. This descriptive in vitro study compares the effectiveness of novel light-emitting diode (LED) technology to remove contaminant hydrocarbons from three different commercially available titanium dental implants: THD, TiUnite, and SLA. The surface topography and morphology were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The chemical compositions were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), before and after the lighting treatment, by a pair of closely placed UVC (λ = 278 nm) and LED devices for 24 h. SEM analysis showed morphological differences at the macro- and micro-scopic level. XPS analysis showed a remarkable reduction in the carbon contents after the UVC treatment: from 25.6 to 19.5 C at. % (carbon atomic concentration) in the THD; from 30.2 to 20.2 C at. % in the TiUnite; from 26.1 to 19.2 C at. % in the SLA surface. Simultaneously, the concentration of oxygen and titanium increased. Therefore, LED-based UVC irradiation decontaminated titanium surfaces and improved the chemical features of them, regardless of the kind of surface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work aimed to compare the capability of Streptococcus oralis to adhere to a novel surface, double-etched titanium (DAE), in respect to machined and single-etched titanium. The secondary outcome was to establish which topographical features could affect the interaction between the implant surface and bacteria. The samples' superficial features were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (EDS), and the wetting properties were tested through sessile methods. The novel surface, the double-etched titanium (DAE), was also analyzed with atomic force microscopy (AFM). S. oralis was inoculated on discs previously incubated in saliva, and then the colony-forming units (CFUs), biomass, and cellular viability were measured at 24 and 48h. SEM observation showed that DAE was characterized by higher porosity and Oxygen (%) in the superficial layer and the measurement of the wetting properties showed higher hydrophilicity. AFM confirmed the presence of a higher superficial nano-roughness. Microbiological analysis showed that DAE discs, coated by pellicle's proteins, were characterized by significantly lower CFUs at 24 and 48 h with respect to the other two groups. In particular, a significant inverse relationship was shown between the CFUs at 48 h and the values of the wetted area and a direct correlation with the water contact angle. The biomass at 24 h was slightly lower on DAE, but results were not significant concerning the other groups, both at 24 and 48 h. The DAE treatment not only modifies the superficial topography and increased hydrophilicity, but it also increases the Oxygen percentage in the superficial layer, which could contribute to the inhibition of S. oralis adhesion. Being the earliest form of additive manufacturing, stereolithography (SLA) fabricates 3D objects by selectively solidifying the liquid resin through a photopolymerization reaction. The ability to fabricate objects with high accuracy as well as a wide variety of materials brings much attention to stereolithography. Since its invention in the 1980s, SLA underwent four generations of major technological innovation over the past 40 years. These innovations have thus resulted in a diversified range of stereolithography systems with dramatically improved resolution, throughput, and materials selection for creating complex 3D objects and devices. In this paper, we review the four generations of stereolithography processes, which are scanning, projection, continuous and volumetric stereolithography. For each generation, representative stereolithography system configurations are also discussed in detail. In addition, other derivative technologies, such as scanning–projection, multi-material, and magnetically assisted stereolithography processes, are also included in this review. The use of dental implants has been increasing in the last years; however, their chemical composition is an important issue due to the fact that the implant surface may suffer a corrosion process, allowing the possibility of ions being released and resulting in a possible biological response. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the morphological analysis of the surface and chemical composition of different implant types through an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) system. Eight dental implant models from different manufacturers were analyzed using variable pressure scanning electron microscopy (VP-SEM) and EDX. The chemical composition and general characteristics of the structural morphology in different dental implant surfaces were analyzed randomly. Nitrogen was identified in two samples, while zirconium was observed in only one model. Aluminium was identified in five samples ranging between 4% and 11% of its composition. Regarding the morphological characteristics, two samples from the same manufacturer had the most irregular surface designed to increase the contact surface, while the others revealed their surfaces with roughness at the micrometric level with no major irregularities. In conclusion, despite the morphology of implants being similar in most of the analyzed samples, more than 50% of them, which are brands of implants available on the market, showed aluminium on the implant surface. Finally, STR (Bone level, Roxolid), DENT (Superline) and NEO (Helix GM) could be considered, among the analyzed samples, the safest implants from the point of view that no aluminium was detected in their chemical composition. Monitoring the patient's condition during rehabilitation is the key to success in this form of treatment. This is especially important in patients with infantile cerebral palsy (ICP). Objective assessment can be achieved through modern optical measurement techniques. The 4DBODY system allows to capture dynamic movement with high accuracy. Eight patients with ICP participated in the study. The group underwent therapy lasting seven days using neurodevelopmental treatment (NDT) and functional training (FT). The patients' condition was monitored by the 4DBODY system. The measurements were taken three times: before the therapy, after, and then again after one week. We have developed the Trunk Mobility in the Frontal Plane Index (TMFPI) for its assessment. The results were compared with a score obtained using the Gross Motor Function Measure scale (GMFM 88). An improvement of the TMFPI parameter was observed in five patients, inconsistent results in two and deterioration in one. The reference GMFM score was higher in all patients relative to pre-treatment values. We found that surface scanning with the 4DBODY system allows to precisely track body movement in ICP patients. The decrease in the TMFPI parameter reflects the improvement in the dysfunction of body alignment, balance and symmetry of movement on the L and R body side. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sensing for equipment location and mapping in explosion risk zones such as underground coal mines is a difficult proposition due to the regulatory requirement for certified protective enclosures to safely house the required complex electrical equipment. This paper provides a case study for the process involved in creating and implementing an optical-grade enclosure for use in these environments. The result of this process has been the creation of ExScan®, a 3D laser mapping system that is providing step-change capability for remote operations and automation in the underground coal mining industry. This paper provides an overview of how molecule-sensitive, spatially-resolved technologies can be applied for monitoring and measuring in microchannels. The principles of elastic light scattering, fluorescence, near-infrared, mid-infrared, and Raman imaging, as well as combination techniques, are briefly presented, and their advantages and disadvantages are explained. With optical methods, images can be acquired both scanning and simultaneously as a complete image. Scanning technologies require more acquisition time, and fast moving processes are not easily observable. On the other hand, molecular selectivity is very high, especially in Raman and mid-infrared (MIR) scanning. For near-infrared (NIR) images, the entire measuring range can be simultaneously recorded with indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs) cameras. However, in this wavelength range, water is the dominant molecule, so it is sometimes necessary to use complex learning algorithms that increase the preparation effort before the actual measurement. These technologies excite molecular vibrations in a variety of ways, making these methods suitable for specific products. Besides measurements of the fluid composition, technologies for particle detection are of additional importance. With scattered light techniques and evaluation according to the Mie theory, particles in the range of 0.2–1 µm can be detected, and fast growth processes can be observed. The potential applications of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) and intraoral scanning exceed the delivery of standard prosthodontic interventions. The aim of this study was to clinically present a developed assessment technique, that relies on the use of sequential intraoral scanning, three-dimensional superimposition, and 2D and 3D deviation analyses based on a standardised protocol, as an auxiliary tool in monitoring dimensional changes of residual ridge post-extraction with a follow-up period of four months.

Scanning Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) Susceptometry simultaneously images the local magnetic fields and susceptibilities above a sample with sub-micron spatial resolution. Further development of this technique requires a thorough understanding of the current, voltage, and flux ( I V Φ ) characteristics of scanning SQUID susceptometers. These sensors often have striking anomalies in their current–voltage characteristics, which we believe to be due to electromagnetic resonances. The effect of these resonances on the performance of these SQUIDs is unknown. To explore the origin and impact of the resonances, we develop a model that qualitatively reproduces the experimentally-determined I V Φ characteristics of our scanning SQUID susceptometers. We use this model to calculate the noise characteristics of SQUIDs of different designs. We find that the calculated ultimate flux noise is better in susceptometers with damping resistors that diminish the resonances than in susceptometers without damping resistors. Such calculations will enable the optimization of the signal-to-noise characteristics of scanning SQUID susceptometers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Peri-implantitis is a worldwide increasing health problem, caused by infection of tissue and bone around an implant by biofilm-forming microorganisms. Effects of peri-implantitis treatment using mechanical debridement, air particle abrasion and electrochemical disinfection on implant surface integrity were compared. Dental implants covered with bacterial biofilm were cleaned using mechanical debridement and air particle abrasion. In addition, implants were disinfected using a novel electrochemical technique based on an array of boron-doped diamond (BDD) coated electrodes. Following treatment and preparation, the implants were inspected by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Mechanical debridement led to changes in surface topography destroying the manufacturer's medium-rough surface by scratch formation. Air particle abrasion led to accumulation of the abrasive used on the implant surface. With both treatment options, appearance of bacteria and yeasts was not affected. In contrast, electrochemical disinfection did not cause alterations of the implant surface but resulted in distorted microbial cells. Electrochemical disinfection of implant surfaces using BDD electrodes may constitute a promising treatment option for cleaning dental implant surfaces without negatively affecting materials and surface properties. Here, we describe an innovative Integrated Laser Sensor (ILS) that combines four spectroscopic techniques and two vision systems into a unique, transportable device. The instrument performs Raman and Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) spectroscopy excited at 355 nm and Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) excited at 1064 nm, and it also detects Laser Scattering (LS) from the target under illumination at 650 nm. The combination of these techniques supplies information about: material change from one scanning point to another, the presence of surface contaminants, the molecular and elemental composition of top target layers. Switching between the spectroscopic techniques and the laser wavelengths is fully automatic. The instrument is equipped with an autofocus and it performs scanning with a chosen grid density over an interactively-selected target area. Alternative to the spectroscopic measurements, it is possible to switch the instrument to a high magnification target viewing. The working distances tested until now are between 8.5 and 30 m. The instrument is self-powered and remotely controlled via wireless communication. The ILS has been fully developed at ENEA for security applications and it was successfully tested in two outdoor campaigns where an automatic recognition of areas containing explosives in traces had been implemented. The strategies for the identification of nitro-compounds placed on various substrates as fingerprints and the results obtained at a working distance of 10 m are discussed in the following. The article presents the method of selecting scanning lines along which coordinate measurements, performed by using, e.g., a coordinate measuring machine working in the single point probing mode, of free-form surfaces of measured workpieces may be conducted. Additionally, the proposed method supports the user of a coordinate measuring system during defining the number of measurement points distributed along selected scanning lines, thus deciding on the final distribution of measurement points on a measured surface of a product. The proposed method enables distributing measurement points in the parts of a measured product characterized by the worst quality of manufacturing. Moreover, the new method is very automated, therefore it affects the increase in the efficiency of coordinate measurements. The effect of using the new method is the non-uniform distribution of measurement points located on free-form surfaces. The presented algorithm takes into account the lengths of selected cross-sections of a measured curvilinear surface of an object, its geometrical complexity and the accuracy of the probe radius correction process. The decision regarding the number of measurement points is made on the basis of the accuracy analysis of the calculations of the corrected measurement points obtained during the probe radius correction process and the accuracy of the substitute model representing a measured curvilinear surface. Two methods of the correction process were used. The accuracy of the applied methods of the probe radius compensation process was estimated on the basis of the deviations calculated between corrected measurement points and scanning lines. The selection of scanning lines and the number of measurement points was realized by using the expert system based on the fuzzy logic. The paper presents the results of both simulation and experimental investigations. The numerical calculations were performed for two selected free-form surfaces. The verification of the developed algorithm was carried out during experimental investigations based on a measurement of a selected free-form surface. The conducted research was aimed at verifying the correctness of the distribution of measurement points generated using the proposed method. In the case of real measurements, measurement points should be located in the places of surfaces of products characterized by the largest deviations of manufacturing. The results of the conducted investigations confirm the usefulness of the developed algorithm for defining the distribution of measurement points on curvilinear surfaces in the coordinate measuring technique. Moreover, the way of implementation of the developed method of the distribution of measurement points in selected commercial measurement software is presented, thus enabling the use of the new method in the industry. This paper proposes an efficient transmission line modulation by using the bending technique to realize low profile leaky wave antennas in the Ku-band for frequency scanning and sensor applications. The paper focuses mainly on the bending effects of the transmission line in terms of the sharpness of edges. The right-hand/left-hand transmission line can be designed in the form of zig-zag pattern with sharp corners and only the right-hand transmission line in the form of sinusoidal patterns with smooth corners. In this presentation, we demonstrate that transmission lines of this kind can be used to realize highly efficient leaky wave antennas with broadband impedance matching and high gain characteristics in the Ku-band. Dispersion analysis and ladder network analysis have been performed for investigating the performance of the proposed designs. The sharpness of the bends periodically distributed along the body of the antenna has been used to our advantage for frequency scanning in the left-hand and right-hand quadrants at different frequencies. A novel additive surface structuring process is devised, which involves localized, intense femtosecond laser irradiation. The irradiation induces a phase explosion of the material being irradiated, and a subsequent ejection of the ablative species that are used as additive building blocks. The ejected species are deposited and accumulated in the vicinity of the ablation site. This redistribution of the material can be repeated and controlled by raster scanning and multiple pulse irradiation. The deposition and accumulation cause the formation of µm-scale three-dimensional structures that surpass the initial surface level. The above-mentioned ablation, deposition, and accumulation all together constitute the proposed additive surface structuring process. In addition, the geometry of the three-dimensional structures can be further modified, if desirable, by a subsequent substractive ablation process. Microstructural analysis reveals a quasi-seamless conjugation between the surface where the structures grow and the structures additively grown by this method, and hence indicates the mechanic robustness of these structures. As a proof of concept, a sub-mm sized re-entrant structure and pillars are fabricated on aluminum substrate by this method. Single units as well as arrayed structures with arbitrary pattern lattice geometry are easily implemented in this additive surface structuring scheme. Engineered surface with desired functionalities can be realized by using this means, i.e., a surface with arrayed pillars being rendered with superhydrophobicity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
