The unprecedented growth of distributed renewable generation is changing the distribution network from passive to active, resulting in issues like reverse power flow, voltage violations, malfunction of protection relays, etc. To ensure the reliable and flawless operation of active distribution networks, an electrical device enabling active network management is necessary, and a hybrid distribution transformer offers a promising solution. This study introduces a novel hybrid transformer topology and multi-mode control strategy to achieve coordinated voltage and reverse power regulation in active distribution networks. The proposed hybrid transformer combines conventional transformer windings with a partially rated SiC-MOSFET-based back-to-back converter, reducing additional investment costs and enhancing system reliability. A multi-mode control strategy is proposed to facilitate the concurrent reverse power control and voltage violation mitigation of the presented hybrid transformer, allowing a smooth transition between the P–Q control mode and the V–f control mode. The control mode switching can be activated manually or autonomously in response to voltage violations or reverse power overloading. The effectiveness of the proposed hybrid transformer configuration and its control mode transition mechanism are examined through comprehensive case studies conducted in the PSCAD/EMTDC environment. The proposed HT design has been confirmed to achieve a voltage regulation range of ±20% of the nominal voltage and effectively regulate bidirectional active power flow within a range of −25% to 25% of the rated power. The voltage in distribution systems is controlled by the under-load tap changer of the substation and the pole transformer of the primary feeders. Recently, as one of the main countermeasures, a step voltage regulator is being introduced to solve voltage problems such as overvoltage phenomena in a distribution feeder interconnected with a renewable energy source and under voltage in a long-distance feeder. However, the tap of the step voltage regulator may be frequently operated due to its interdependent relationship with the under-load tap changer in the distribution system. Furthermore, given the existing operating characteristics of the step voltage regulator, it is difficult to perfectly maintain the customer voltage within an allowable limit using existing methods such as the line drop compensation method for a step voltage regulator. In addition, the existing line drop compensation method, considering the distributed generators, may be not able to control the proper voltage within an allowable limit. Therefore, in order to solve such voltage problems, this paper proposes a voltage control method for a step voltage regulator by considering the output voltage of an under-load tap changer that is operated via the line drop compensation method. In other words, to overcome the limitations of existing voltage control methods for step voltage regulators, this paper proposes an optimal control method to determine the optimal compensation rate for a step voltage regulator by considering the reverse power flow from a renewable energy source and the output voltage of the under-load tap changer of the main transformer. Recent years have seen a rapid uptake in distributed energy resources (DER). Such technologies pose a number of challenges to network operators, which ultimately can limit the amount of rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems that can be connected to a network. The objective of this industry-based research was to determine the potential network effects of forecast levels of customer-owned rooftop solar PV on Energy Queensland's distribution network and formulate functions that can be used to determine such effects without the requirement for detailed network modeling and analysis. In this research, many of Energy Queensland's distribution feeders were modeled using DIgSILENT PowerFactory and analyzed with forecast levels of solar PV and customer load. Python scripts were used to automate this process, and quasi-dynamic simulation (QDSL) models were used to represent the dynamic volt–watt and volt–var response of inverters, as mandated by the Australian Standard AS/NZS 4777. In analyzing the results, linear relationships were revealed between the number of PV systems on a feeder and various network characteristics. Regression was used to form trend equations that represent the linear relationships for each scenario analyzed. The trend equations provide a way of approximating network characteristics for other feeders under various levels of customer-owned rooftop solar PV without the need for detailed modeling. Modern low-voltage distribution systems necessitate solar photovoltaic (PV) penetration. One of the primary concerns with this grid-connected PV system is overloading due to reverse power flow, which degrades the life of distribution transformers. This study investigates transformer overload issues due to reverse power flow in a low-voltage network with high PV penetration. A simulation model of a real urban electricity company in Ghana is investigated against various PV penetration levels by load flows with ETAP software. The impact of reverse power flow on the radial network transformer loadings is examined for high PV penetrations. Using the least squares method, simulation results are modelled in Excel software. Transformer backflow limitations are determined by correlating operating loads with PV penetration. At high PV penetration, the models predict reverse power flow into the transformer. Interpolations from the correlation models show transformer backflow operating limits of 78.04 kVA and 24.77% at the threshold of reverse power flow. These limits correspond to a maximum PV penetration limit of 88.30%. In low-voltage networks with high PV penetration; therefore, planners should consider transformer overload limits caused by reverse power flow, which degrades transformer life. The increasing use of photovoltaics (PVs) in distribution systems owing to the low-carbon policy has given rise to the need for various technological changes. In particular, the operation of on-load tap changers (OLTCs) has attracted attention. In traditional distribution systems, the OLTC operates via a line-drop compensator (LDC), which focuses on the load to solve the low-voltage problem; however, the problem of over-voltage caused by PVs persists. Currently, a method for operating an OLTC using the measured voltage is being researched; however, solving the voltage problem for several feeders connected to a main transformer (MT) is not viable. Therefore, this study proposes an OLTC operation method to address the feeder with the largest voltage problem depending on the direction of power flow. The proposed method selects a point where the OLTC operates using the difference between the measured and reference voltages. Setting the reference voltage can solve the problem that occurs due to the direction of power flow. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified via case studies. Distributed generators (DG) using renewable energy sources (RESs) have been attracting special attention within distribution systems. However, a large amount of DG penetration causes voltage deviation and reverse power flow in the smart grid. Therefore, the smart grid needs a solution for voltage control, power flow control and power outage prevention. This paper proposes a decision technique of optimal reference scheduling for a battery energy storage system (BESS), inverters interfacing with a DG and voltage control devices for optimal operation. Moreover, the reconfiguration of the distribution system is made possible by the installation of a loop power flow controller (LPC). Two separate simulations are provided to maintain the reliability in the stable power supply and economical aspects. First, the effectiveness of the smart grid with installed BESS or LPC devices is demonstrated in fault situations. Second, the active smart grid using LCPs is proposed. Real-time techniques of the dual scheduling algorithm are applied to the system. The aforementioned control objective is formulated and solved using the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm with an adaptive inertia weight (AIW) function. In this study, we have proposed a novel current injection determination method that improves the voltage unbalance based on the unbalanced line impedance in a distribution network with a large-capacity PV system. An increase in the unbalance of the distribution line voltage was observed owing to a large-scale reverse power flow. To visualize this phenomenon, the P-V curves were derived for each phase to indicate the increase in the voltage unbalance with respect to the reverse power flow. Based on the derived P-V curves, the effect of a current unbalance on the voltage unbalance was investigated. It was clarified that there is a current unbalance that can improve the voltage unbalance even if the line impedance is unbalanced. In other words, the current unbalance that can theoretically make the voltage unbalance zero could be expressed in terms of the symmetrical components of unbalanced line impedance. As an application of the proposed method, the effect of the mitigation of voltage unbalance was demonstrated by controlling single-phase reactors, whose numbers were determined by using the relationship between the unbalanced line current and unbalanced line impedance. This paper proposes a new control method for a Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC). This method is based on the load equivalent conductance approach, originally proposed by Fryze. It can be useful not only for compensation for nonactive current and for improving voltage quality, but it also allows one to perform some unconventional functions. This control method can be performed by extending the orthodox notion of 'static' load equivalent conductance into a time-variable signal. It may be used to characterize energy changes in the whole UPQC-and-load circuitry. The UPQC can regulate energy flow between all sources and loads being under compensation. They may be located as well for UPQC's AC-side as DC-side. System works properly even if they switch their activity to work either as loads or generators. The UPQC can operate also as a buffer, which can store/share the in-load generated energy amongst other loads, or it can transmit this energy to the source. Reverse power flow from a photovoltaic (PV) system in a distribution system causes a voltage rise. A relative study regarding the reduction in the distribution feeder voltage depending on system conditions and the magnitude of reverse power flow has been conducted. Several methods for mitigating voltage rise have been proposed; however, the influence of these methods on the voltage in the distribution system, where the voltage is reduced due to reverse power flow, remains to be determined. In this study, the effect of constant power factor control in low-voltage PV systems, which are widely used as voltage rise countermeasures in distribution systems, was analyzed under the condition that the distribution line voltage decreases due to reverse power flow. Consequently, the constant power factor control of the low-voltage distribution system was found to adversely reduce voltage in the medium voltage distribution system due to the consumption of lagging reactive power by the PV systems. The impact of PV generation distributed in a low voltage transmission line depends on many factors: The distribution lines and PV generators characteristics, its location, operational control, local meteorological conditions, electricity consumption profile, and the electricity cost variation. An atypical and challenging behavior of photovoltaic distributed generation (DG) insertion in consumer units (CUs), implies in some circumstances, as the reverse directionality of the power flow between the load equipped with a photovoltaic system generator and the electrical grid, when a CU contains a distributed generation and low power consumption, the power flow will be directed to the power electric grid. In this work, the modeling of a low-voltage real feeder was performed, setting the variables of the system under real operating conditions. As result, voltage levels variability throughout the feeder, the electrical losses, and the asymmetry between the phases were observed. Through simulation scenarios, the occurrence of voltage increase under different penetration scenarios of distributed generation was verified and there was a 10% increase in reference voltage as well as the occurrence of higher electrical losses by reverse current, reaching 1200% more with a DG penetration, in the massive presence of the photovoltaic generator. The mitigatory action used in this work was able to attenuate the negative impacts to the feeder circuit, ensuring the integrity grid and the consumer unit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
