Eukaryotic NMEs/NDP kinases are a family of 10 multifunctional proteins that occur in different cellular compartments and interact with various cellular components (proteins, membranes, and DNA). In contrast to the well-studied Group I NMEs (NME1–4), little is known about the more divergent Group II NMEs (NME5–9). Three recent publications now shed new light on NME6. First, NME6 is a third mitochondrial NME, largely localized in the matrix space, associated with the mitochondrial inner membrane. Second, while its monomeric form is inactive, NME6 gains NDP kinase activity through interaction with mitochondrial RCC1L. This challenges the current notion that mammalian NMEs require the formation of hexamers to become active. The formation of complexes between NME6 and RCC1L, likely heterodimers, seemingly obviates the necessity for hexamer formation, stabilizing a NDP kinase-competent conformation. Third, NME6 is involved in mitochondrial gene maintenance and expression by providing (d)NTPs for replication and transcription (in particular the pyrimidine nucleotides) and by a less characterized mechanism that supports mitoribosome function. This review offers an overview of NME evolution and structure and highlights the new insight into NME6. Clickable nucleosides, most often 5-ethynyl-2′-deoxyuridine (EtU), are widely used in studies of DNA replication in living cells and in DNA functionalization for bionanotechology applications. Although clickable dNTPs are easily incorporated by DNA polymerases into the growing chain, afterwards they might become targets for DNA repair systems or interfere with faithful nucleotide insertion. Little is known about the possibility and mechanisms of these post-synthetic events. Here, we investigated the repair and (mis)coding properties of EtU and two bulkier clickable pyrimidine nucleosides, 5-(octa-1,7-diyn-1-yl)-U (C8-AlkU) and 5-(octa-1,7-diyn-1-yl)-C (C8-AlkC). In vitro, EtU and C8-AlkU, but not C8-AlkC, were excised by SMUG1 and MBD4, two DNA glycosylases from the base excision repair pathway. However, when placed into a plasmid encoding a fluorescent reporter inactivated by repair in human cells, EtU and C8-AlkU persisted for much longer than uracil or its poorly repairable phosphorothioate-flanked derivative. DNA polymerases from four different structural families preferentially bypassed EtU, C8-AlkU and C8-AlkC in an error-free manner, but a certain degree of misincorporation was also observed, especially evident for DNA polymerase β. Overall, clickable pyrimidine nucleotides could undergo repair and be a source of mutations, but the frequency of such events in the cell is unlikely to be considerable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Azido-modified nucleosides have been extensively explored as substrates for click chemistry and the metabolic labeling of DNA and RNA. These compounds are also of interest as precursors for further synthetic elaboration and as therapeutic agents. This review discusses the chemistry of azidonucleosides related to the generation of nitrogen-centered radicals (NCRs) from the azido groups that are selectively inserted into the nucleoside frame along with the subsequent chemistry and biological implications of NCRs. For instance, the critical role of the sulfinylimine radical generated during inhibition of ribonucleotide reductases by 2′-azido-2′-deoxy pyrimidine nucleotides as well as the NCRs generated from azidonucleosides by radiation-produced (prehydrated and aqueous) electrons are discussed. Regio and stereoselectivity of incorporation of an azido group ("radical arm") into the frame of nucleoside and selective generation of NCRs under reductive conditions, which often produce the same radical species that are observed upon ionization events due to radiation and/or other oxidative conditions that are emphasized. NCRs generated from nucleoside-modified precursors other than azidonucleosides are also discussed but only with the direct relation to the same/similar NCRs derived from azidonucleosides. Glycosylation is a widespread glycosyl modification that regulates gene expression and metabolite bioactivity in all life processes of plants. Phosphoribosylation is a special glycosyl modification catalyzed by phosphoribosyltransferase (PRTase), which functions as a key step in the biosynthesis pathway of purine and pyrimidine nucleotides, histidine, tryptophan, and coenzyme NAD(P)+ to control the production of these essential metabolites. Studies in the past decades have reported that PRTases are indispensable for plant survival and thriving, whereas the complicated physiological role of PRTases in plant life and their crosstalk is not well understood. Here, we comprehensively overview and critically discuss the recent findings on PRTases, including their classification, as well as the function and crosstalk in regulating plant development, abiotic stress response, and the balance of growth and stress responses. A styrylpyridine-containing cyclophane with diethylenetriamine linkers is presented as a host system whose association with representative nucleotides was examined with photometric and fluorimetric titrations. The spectrometric titrations revealed the formation of 1:1 complexes with log Kb values in the range of 2.3–3.2 for pyrimidine nucleotides TMP (thymidine monophosphate), TTP (thymidine triphosphate) and CMP (cytidine monophosphate) and 3.8–5.0 for purine nucleotides AMP (adenosine monophosphate), ATP (adenosine triphosphate), and dGMP (deoxyguanosine monophosphate). Notably, in a neutral buffer solution, the fluorimetric response to the complex formation depends on the type of nucleotide. Hence, quenching of the already weak fluorescence was observed with the purine bases, whereas the association of the cyclophane with pyrimidine bases TMP, TTP, and CMP resulted in a significant fluorescence light-up effect. Thus, it was demonstrated that the styrylpyridine unit is a useful and complementary fluorophore for the development of selective nucleotide-targeting fluorescent probes based on alkylamine-linked cyclophanes. The purine signaling system is represented by purine and pyrimidine nucleotides and nucleosides that exert their effects through the adenosine, P2X and P2Y receptor families. It is known that, under physiological conditions, P2 receptors play only a minor role in modulating the functions of cells and systems; however, their role significantly increases under some pathophysiological conditions, such as stress, ischemia or hypothermia, when they can play a dominant role as a signaling molecule. The diversity of P2 receptors and their wide distribution in the body make them very attractive as a target for the pharmacological action of drugs with a new mechanism of action. The review is devoted to the involvement of P2 signaling in the development of pathologies associated with a loss of muscle mass. The contribution of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) as a signal molecule in the pathogenesis of a number of muscular dystrophies (Duchenne, Becker and limb girdle muscular dystrophy 2B) is considered. To understand the processes involving the purinergic system, the role of the ATP and P2 receptors in several models associated with skeletal muscle degradation is also discussed. Dihydroorotase (DHOase) is the third enzyme in the pathway used for the biosynthesis of pyrimidine nucleotides. In mammals, DHOase is active in a trifunctional enzyme, CAD, which also carries out the activities of carbamoyl phosphate synthetase and aspartate transcarbamoylase. Prior to this study, it was unknown whether the FDA-approved clinical drug 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), which is used as an anticancer therapy, could bind to the DHOase domain of human CAD (huDHOase). Here, we identified huDHOase as a new 5-FU binding protein, thereby extending the 5-FU interactome to this human enzyme. In order to investigate where 5-FU binds to huDHOase, we solved the complexed crystal structure at 1.97 Å (PDB ID 8GVZ). The structure of huDHOase complexed with malate was also determined for the sake of comparison (PDB ID 8GW0). These two nonsubstrate ligands were bound at the active site of huDHOase. It was previously established that the substrate N-carbamoyl-L-aspartate is either bound to or moves away from the active site, but it is the loop that is extended towards (loop-in mode) or moved away (loop-out mode) from the active site. DHOase also binds to nonsubstrate ligands via the loop-out mode. In contrast to the Escherichia coli DHOase model, our complexed structures revealed that huDHOase binds to either 5-FU or malate via the loop-in mode. We further characterized the binding of 5-FU to huDHOase using site-directed mutagenesis and the fluorescence quenching method. Considering the loop-in mode, the dynamic loop in huDHOase should be a suitable drug-targeting site for further designing inhibitors and clinical chemotherapies to suppress pyrimidine biosynthesis in cancer cell lines. The prototypic sensors for the induction of innate and adaptive immune responses are the Toll-like receptors (TLRs). Unusually high expression of TLRs in prostate carcinoma (PC), associated with less differentiated, more aggressive and more propagating forms of PC, changed the previous paradigm about the role of TLRs strictly in immune defense system. Our data reveal an entirely novel role of nucleic acids-sensing Toll-like receptors (NA-TLRs) in functional adaptation of malignant cells for supply and digestion of surrounding metabolic substrates from dead cells as specific mechanism of cancer cells survival, by corresponding ligands accelerated degradation and purine/pyrimidine salvage pathway. The spectrophotometric measurement protocols used for the determination of the activity of RNases and DNase II have been optimized in our laboratory as well as the enzyme-linked immunosorbent method for the determination of NF-κB p65 in prostate tissue samples. The protocols used to determine Dicer RNase, AGO2, TARBP2 and PIWIL4 were based on enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The amount of pre-existing acid-soluble oligonucleotides was measured and expressed as coefficient of absorbance. The activities of acid DNase II and RNase T2, and the activities of nucleases cleaving TLR3, TLR7/8 and TLR9 ligands (Poly I:C, poly U and unmethylated CpG), increased several times in PC, compared to the corresponding tumor adjacent and control tissue, exerting very high sensitivity and specificity of above 90%. Consequently higher levels of hypoxanthine and NF-κB p65 were reported in PC, whereas the opposite results were observed for miRNA biogenesis enzyme (Dicer RNase), miRNA processing protein (TARB2), miRNA-induced silencing complex protein (Argonaute-AGO) and PIWI-interacting RNAs silence transposon. Considering the crucial role of purine and pyrimidine nucleotides as energy carriers, subunits of nucleic acids and nucleotide cofactors, future explorations will be aimed to design novel anti-cancer immune strategies based on a specific acid endolysosomal nuclease inhibition. The activity of phosphate groups of phosphoethanolamine and pyrimidine nucleotides (thymidine 5-monophosphate, cytidine 5-monophosphate and uridine 5'monophosphate) in the process of complexation metal ions in aqueous solution was studied. Using the potentiometric method with computer calculation of the data and spectroscopic methods such as UV-Vis, EPR, 13C and 31P NMR as well as FT-IR, the overall stability constants of the complexes as well as coordination modes were obtained. At lower pH, copper(II) ions are complexed only by phosphate groups, whereas the endocyclic nitrogen atom of nucleotides has been identified as a negative center interacting with the -NH3+ groups of phosphoethanolamine. Glucose and glutamine play a crucial role in the metabolic reprogramming of cancer cells. Proliferating cells metabolize glucose in the aerobic glycolysis for energy supply, and glucose and glutamine represent the primary sources of carbon atoms for the biosynthesis of nucleotides, amino acids, and lipids. Glutamine is also an important nitrogen donor for the production of nucleotides, amino acids, and nicotinamide. Several membrane receptors strictly control metabolic reprogramming in cancer cells and are considered new potential therapeutic targets. Formyl-peptide receptor 2 (FPR2) belongs to a small family of GPCRs and is implicated in many physiopathological processes. Its stimulation induces, among other things, NADPH oxidase-dependent ROS generation that, in turn, contributes to intracellular signaling. Previously, by phosphoproteomic analysis, we observed that numerous proteins involved in energetic metabolism are uniquely phosphorylated upon FPR2 stimulation. Herein, we investigated the role of FPR2 in cell metabolism, and we observed that the concentrations of several metabolites associated with the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP), tricarboxylic acid cycle, nucleotide synthesis, and glutamine metabolism, were significantly enhanced in FPR2-stimulated cells. In particular, we found that the binding of specific FPR2 agonists: (i) promotes NADPH production; (ii) activates the non-oxidative phase of PPP; (iii) induces the expression of the ASCT2 glutamine transporter; (iv) regulates oxidative phosphorylation; and (v) induces the de novo synthesis of pyrimidine nucleotides, which requires FPR2-dependent ROS generation. Phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate synthetase (PRS EC 2.7.6.1) is a rate-limiting enzyme that irreversibly catalyzes the formation of phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate (PRPP) from ribose-5-phosphate and adenosine triphosphate (ATP). This key metabolite is required for the synthesis of purine and pyrimidine nucleotides, the two aromatic amino acids histidine and tryptophan, the cofactors nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP+), all of which are essential for various life processes. Despite its ubiquity and essential nature across the plant and animal kingdoms, PRPP synthetase displays species-specific characteristics regarding the number of gene copies and architecture permitting interaction with other areas of cellular metabolism. The impact of mutated PRS genes in the model eukaryote Saccharomyces cerevisiae on cell signalling and metabolism may be relevant to the human neuropathies associated with PRPS mutations. Human PRPS1 and PRPS2 gene products are implicated in drug resistance associated with recurrent acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and progression of colorectal cancer and hepatocellular carcinoma. The investigation of PRPP metabolism in accepted model organisms, e.g., yeast and zebrafish, has the potential to reveal novel drug targets for treating at least some of the diseases, often characterized by overlapping symptoms, such as Arts syndrome and respiratory infections, and uncover the significance and relevance of human PRPS in disease diagnosis, management, and treatment. A series of phenylbipyridinylpyrazoles was synthesized through the reaction of 2-(4-(2-chloropyridin-4-yl)-3-(3-methoxy-5-methylphenyl)-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)acetonitrile (4) with different 6-substituted pyridine-3-ylboronic acids. The final compounds 5a-j were screened at 10 µM against over 60 tumor cell lines at the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI). In light of the NCI results, compounds 5c and 5h showed a broad spectrum of activity against NCI cell lines with mean growth of 53% and 58%, respectively. Compound 5e behaved differently as it showed high degree of selectivity and potency by inhibiting 96% of growth of leukemia SR cell line at 10 µM. Standard COMPARE analyses were performed at the GI50 level and the results exhibit high correlation in the form of pairwise correlation coefficient (PCC) of more than 0.6 between three of the current compounds and three standard known anticancer agents. Compound 5e demonstrated high correlation levels with merbarone (NSC S336628) with a PCC value of 0.631. Compound 5h showed a considerably high PCC value of 0.626 with dichloroallyl lawsone, while compound 5i, showed PCC values of 0.601 and 0.604 with both dichloroallyl lawsone and N,N-dibenzyldaunomycin (NSC S268242), respectively. These three standard agents have anticancer activity via two major mechanism of actions, inhibition of topoisomerase II and inhibition of biosynthesis of pyrimidine nucleotides, therefore, compounds 5a–j are promising therapeutic agents for targeting different human malignancies. The etiology of dry mouth conditions is multi-faceted. Patients radiated after head and neck cancer (HNC) and those with primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) share many of the same symptoms despite different causes. With the aim of better understanding the pathophysiology and biochemical processes behind dry mouth with different etiologies, we investigated the metabolic profile of 10 HNC patients, 9 pSS patients and 10 healthy controls using high-performance liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) metabolomics. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed different metabolic profiles when comparing all subjects included in the study. Both patient groups showed higher ratios of several pyrimidine nucleotides and nucleosides when compared to controls. This finding may indicate that purinergic signaling plays a role in dry mouth conditions. Moreover, significantly increased levels of DL-3-aminoisobutyric acid were found in HNC patients when compared to controls, and a similar tendency was observed in the pSS patients. Furthermore, a dysregulation in amino acid metabolism was observed in both patient groups. In conclusion, metabolomics analysis showed separate metabolic profiles for HNC and pSS patients as compared to controls that could be useful in diagnostics and for elucidating the different pathophysiologies. UVB radiation is the most mutagenic component of the UV spectrum that reaches the earth's surface and causes the development of DNA damage in the form of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers and 6-4 photoproducts. UV radiation usually results in cellular death, but if left unchecked, it can affect DNA integrity, cell and tissue homeostasis and cause mutations in oncogenes and tumour-suppressor genes. These mutations, if unrepaired, can lead to abnormal cell growth, increasing the risk of cancer development. Epidemiological data strongly associates UV exposure as a major factor in melanoma development, but the exact biological mechanisms involved in this process are yet to be fully elucidated. The nucleotide excision repair (NER) pathway is responsible for the repair of UV-induced lesions. Patients with the genetic disorder Xeroderma Pigmentosum have a mutation in one of eight NER genes associated with the XP complementation groups XP-A to XP-G and XP variant (XP-V). XP is characterized by diminished repair capacity, as well as a 1000-fold increase in the incidence of skin cancers, including melanoma. This has suggested a significant role for NER in melanoma development as a result of UVB exposure. This review discusses the current research surrounding UVB radiation and NER capacity and how further investigation of NER could elucidate the role of NER in avoiding UV-induced cellular death resulting in melanomagenesis. Replicating cells undergo DNA synthesis in the highly regulated, S-phase of the cell cycle. Analogues of the pyrimidine deoxynucleoside thymidine may be inserted into replicating DNA, effectively tagging dividing cells allowing their characterisation. Tritiated thymidine, targeted using autoradiography was technically demanding and superseded by 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine (BrdU) and related halogenated analogues, detected using antibodies. Their detection required the denaturation of DNA, often constraining the outcome of investigations. Despite these limitations BrdU alone has been used to target newly synthesised DNA in over 20,000 reviewed biomedical studies. A recent breakthrough in "tagging DNA synthesis" is the thymidine analogue 5-ethynyl-2′-deoxyuridine (EdU). The alkyne group in EdU is readily detected using a fluorescent azide probe and copper catalysis using 'Huisgen's reaction' (1,3-dipolar cycloaddition or 'click chemistry'). This rapid, two-step biolabelling approach allows the tagging and imaging of DNA within cells whilst preserving the structural and molecular integrity of the cells. The bio-orthogonal detection of EdU allows its application in more experimental assays than previously possible with other "unnatural bases". These include physiological, anatomical and molecular biological experimentation in multiple fields including, stem cell research, cancer biology, and parasitology. Conjugate addition reaction of various nucleophiles across the vinyl group of 2-chloro-4-vinylpyrimidine, 2-chloro-4-(1-phenylvinyl)pyrimidine and 2-chloro-4-vinylquinazoline provides the corresponding 2-chloro-4-(2-substituted ethyl)pyrimidines and 2-chloro-4-(2-substituted ethyl)quinazolines. Treatment of these products, without isolation, with N-methylpiperazine results in nucleophilic displacement of chloride and yields the corresponding 2,4-disubstituted pyrimidines and quinazolines. The synthetic route for introduction of fluorophenylalkyl (compounds 5, 7, 14 and 15) and fluorophenylalkenyl (compounds 4E and 13) side chains at C-6 of the pyrimidine nucleus involved the lithiation of the pyrimidine derivatives 1, 2 and 11 and subsequent nucleophilic addition or substitution reactions of the organolithium intermediate thus obtained with 2-fluorophenylacetone, 4-fluoroacetophenone or ethyl 4-fluorobenzoate as electrophiles. The structures of novel compounds were confirmed by 1H-, 19F- and 13C-NMR and MS. Compounds 8 and 10 containing unsaturated fluorophenylalkyl side chains showed better inhibitory effect than their saturated fluorophenylalkylated pyrimidine counterparts 7 and 9. A conformational study based on NOE enhancements showed the importance of the double bond and substitution in the side chain for the conformational preferences in relation to inhibitory activity. Among all tested compounds, C-5 furyl (12) and phenyl (13 and 15) substituted pyrimidine derivatives showed significant cytostatic activities against all tested tumor cell lines. The advantages from exogenously applied RNAi biopesticides have yet to be realized in through commercialization due to inconsistent activity of the dsRNA trigger, and the activity level of RNAi suppression. This has prompted research on improving delivery methods for applying exogenous dsRNA into plants and insects for the management of pests and pathogens. Another aspect to improve RNAi activity is the incorporation of modified 2′-F pyrimidine nucleotides into the dsRNA trigger. Modified dsRNA incorporating 32–55% of the 2′-F- nucleotides produced improved RNAi activity that increased insect mortality by 12–35% greater than non-modified dsRNA triggers of the same sequence. These results were repeatable across multiple Hemiptera: the Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri, Liviidae); whitefly (Bemisia tabaci, Aleyroididae); and the glassy-winged sharpshooter (Homalodisca vitripennis, Cicadellidae). Studies using siRNA with modified 2′-F- pyrimidines in mammalian cells show they improved resistance to degradation from nucleases, plus result in greater RNAi activity, due to increase concentrations and improved binding affinity to the mRNA target. Successful RNAi biopesticides of the future will be able to increase RNAi repeatability in the field, by incorporating modifications of the dsRNA, such as 2′-F- pyrimidines, that will improve delivery after applied to fruit trees or crop plants, with increased activity after ingestion by insects. Among the plethora of enzymes involved in the nucleotide and adenosine metabolism, ectonucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase/CD39 stands out as a member of NTPDase family, which degrades adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) to the diphosphate ADP, as well as the ectonucleotidase/CD79, which transforms adenosine 5'-monophosphate (AMP) to the nucleoside adenosine. At the presynaptic level, ATP acting on P2Y nucleotide receptors decreases ACh secretion in most studied preparations, whereas adenosine affects secretion either by inhibition via A SB 1 sb receptors or by facilitation through A SB 2 sb SB A sb receptors. Additionality, other contributions are related to enzymatic activities responsible for nucleotide and adenosine metabolism, like adenosine deaminase and ectonucleotide triphosphate diphosphohydrolase-2 and their implications in drug therapies. Dihydroorotase (DHOase) is the third enzyme in the de novo biosynthesis pathway for pyrimidine nucleotides, and an attractive target for potential anticancer chemotherapy. By screening plant extracts and performing GC–MS analysis, we identified and characterized that the potent anticancer drug plumbagin (PLU), isolated from the carnivorous plant Nepenthes miranda, was a competitive inhibitor of DHOase. We also solved the complexed crystal structure of yeast DHOase with PLU (PDB entry 7CA1), to determine the binding interactions and investigate the binding modes. Mutational and structural analyses indicated the binding of PLU to DHOase through loop-in mode, and this dynamic loop may serve as a drug target. PLU exhibited cytotoxicity on the survival, migration, and proliferation of 4T1 cells and induced apoptosis. Deoxyribozymes (DNAzymes) with RNA hydrolysis activity have a tremendous potential as gene suppression agents for therapeutic applications. The most extensively studied representative is the 10-23 DNAzyme consisting of a catalytic loop and two substrate binding arms that can be designed to bind and cleave the RNA sequence of interest. The RNA substrate is cleaved between central purine and pyrimidine nucleotides. The activity of this DNAzyme in vitro is considerably higher than in vivo, which was suggested to be related to its divalent cation dependency. Understanding the mechanism of DNAzyme catalysis is hindered by the absence of structural information. Numerous biological studies, however, provide comprehensive insights into the role of particular deoxynucleotides and functional groups in DNAzymes. Here we provide an overview of the thermodynamic properties, the impact of nucleobase modifications within the catalytic loop, and the role of different metal ions in catalysis. We point out features that will be helpful in developing novel strategies for structure determination and to understand the mechanism of the 10-23 DNAzyme. Consideration of these features will enable to develop improved strategies for structure determination and to understand the mechanism of the 10-23 DNAzyme. Microfossil evidence indicates that cellular life on Earth emerged during the Paleoarchean era be-tween 3.6 and 3.2 thousand million years ago (Gya) [[1]]. Prebiotic chemistry experiences showed that the chemical combinations of different building blocks can give rise to the formations of different classes of biotic molecules such as 2',3'-cyclic pyrimidine nucleotides, various-amino acids and glycerol phosphate [[5]]. Pyrimidine nucleotides are important metabolites that are building blocks of nucleic acids, which participate in various aspects of plant development. Only a few genes involved in pyrimidine metabolism have been identified in rice and the majority of their functions remain unclear. In this study, we used a map-based cloning strategy to isolate a UMPK gene in rice, encoding the UMP kinase that phosphorylates UMP to form UDP, from a recessive mutant with pale-green leaves. In the mutant, UDP content always decreased, while UTP content fluctuated with the development of leaves. Mutation of UMPK reduced chlorophyll contents and decreased photosynthetic capacity. In the mutant, transcription of plastid-encoded RNA polymerase-dependent genes, including psaA, psbB, psbC and petB, was significantly reduced, whereas transcription of nuclear-encoded RNA polymerase-dependent genes, including rpoA, rpoB, rpoC1, and rpl23, was elevated. The expression of UMPK was significantly induced by various stresses, including cold, heat, and drought. Increased sensitivity to cold stress was observed in the mutant, based on the survival rate and malondialdehyde content. High accumulation of hydrogen peroxide was found in the mutant, which was enhanced by cold treatment. Our results indicate that the UMP kinase gene plays important roles in regulating chloroplast development and stress response in rice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
