Using solid waste-based materials, such as recycled building aggregate (RCA), preparing 3D-printed materials can reduce costs but increase the water–cement ratio of the printed material, which reduces its mechanical performance. In order to solve the problem of mechanical properties decline caused by an increase in the w/c ratio, this experiment found that adding calcined salt mud (CSM) to the printing materials and changing the water-to-cement ratio from 0.37 to 0.4 CSM can ensure that the compressive strength of the printing materials remains basically unchanged. Moreover, through TG, SEM, and other microscopic data, it can be seen that calcium hydroxide in CSM can not only participate in the synergistic reaction of ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) and dust ash (DA), produce more NaOH, and promote the hydration of granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) but also promote the formation of ettringite together with SO42− in solution, optimizing pore size distribution. This study examines the impact of sodium citrate and a plasticizing additive, along with their sequential introduction into a cement slurry or concrete mix, on the heat evolution of the cement slurry, the microstructure, phase composition of the cement paste, and the compressive strength of fine-grained concrete. The binder used in this research was a blended binder consisting of 90% Portland cement and 10% calcium aluminate cement. This type of binder is characterized by an increased heat evolution and accelerated setting time. The addition of sodium citrate at 5% of the binder mass alters the phase composition of newly formed compounds by increasing the quantity of AFt and AFm phases. The presence of sodium citrate significantly delays the hydration process of tricalcium silicate by a factor of 3.3. Initially, it accelerates belite hydration by 31.6%, but subsequently slows it down, with a retardation of 43.4% observed at 28 days. During the hardening process, the hydration of tricalcium aluminate and tetracalcium aluminoferrite is accelerated throughout the hardening process, with the maximum acceleration occurring within the first 24 h. During the first 24 h of hydration, the dissolution rates of tricalcium aluminate and tetracalcium aluminoferrite were 40.7% and 75% faster, respectively. Sodium citrate enhances heat evolution during the initial 24 h by up to 4.3 times and reduces the induction period by up to 5 times. Furthermore, sodium citrate promotes early strength development during the initial curing period, enhancing compressive strength by up to 6.4 times compared to the reference composition. This paper presents an experimental approach to the study of the compressive strength, isothermal calorimetry and life cycle assessment (LCA) of alkali-activated pastes based on soda–lime–silica glass, established to investigate the effect of the nature and proportion of the activator. Four different activators are compared: Portland cement, sodium silicate, sodium carbonate (at four percentages by weight: 5, 10, 15 and 25 wt% relative to glass) and sodium hydroxide (3.5 wt%). Portland cement and sodium carbonate were added in dry form (powder), while sodium hydroxide (pellets) and silicate were used in solution. At room temperature, glass exhibited slow reaction kinetics, with mechanical performance increasing significantly beyond 28 days of curing. The nature of the activator had a direct impact on the mechanical performance of the activated glass. Cement-activated pastes and those containing 25 wt% of sodium carbonate developed strength at an early age (0–7 days). The other activators showed lower strength development before 28 days of reaction. While a higher activator content improved short-term performance, it also increased the environmental impact, primarily due to the activator. The LCA, conducted on 11 indicators, revealed that the environmental impact was largely driven by the type and amount of activator used. A performance impact indicator (PII) related to global warming was introduced to compare pastes with different performance values. At an early age (0–28 days), the PII was lower when the activator level was high but decreased over time as the strength improved. In terms of long-term performance (360 days), hydroxide and sodium carbonate (10 wt%) achieved compressive strengths of 91 and 74 MPa, respectively. The rise in early-age temperature concrete structures, driven by the exothermic reactions during cement hydration, significantly increases the risk of thermal cracking. To address this issue, the construction industry employs several strategies, including the partial substitution of cement with ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) due to its lower heat of hydration. Accurately predicting the hydration temperature of concrete is critical for preventing thermal cracking. This task becomes more complex, with fluctuating ambient temperatures influencing hydration kinetics and heat dissipation. Previous studies often assume adiabatic or isothermal conditions, thus overlooking the impact of ambient temperature variations. This paper presents an innovative finite element modelling (FEM) approach to simulate the hydration temperature progression in in situ concrete slabs, incorporating the effects of ambient temperature fluctuations. Isothermal calorimetry curves were adjusted using the Arrhenius-based approach to express the cement hydration rate as a function of ambient temperature. The FEM outcomes, validated with semi-adiabatic calorimetry tests, demonstrate the model's capability to forecast temperature development in in situ concrete under varying ambient conditions. Additionally, the study examines the influence of partial cement replacement with GGBS on thermal behaviour, revealing that while GGBS effectively reduces thermal reactions at higher contents, its efficacy diminishes with rising ambient temperatures. This paper examines the properties of sewage sludge ashes (SSAs) from the incineration of sewage sludge with added limestone for toxic gas treatment. It also evaluates the potential valorization of SSA in cement composites as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). The work involves a thorough characterization of four SSAs, including physical, chemical, and mineralogical properties. It also includes assessing the behavior of SSA in water solution through electrical conductivity measurements. The reactivity of ashes was evaluated using the R3 method and mechanical properties. The results revealed that all SSAs present comparable mineralogical and chemical properties, with varying proportions. Major elements such as Ca, Si, Fe, P, and S are predominant in the ashes, with traces of heavy metals. In an aqueous solution, a gradual formation of ettringite was detected only for two SSA. The heavy metal leachability was negligible, confirming that SSA is a non-hazardous waste. Finally, the reactivity and strength activity index assessments revealed a low and slow reactivity of SSA compared to metakaolin or slag. The SSA that favored ettringite formation in aqueous solution presented the lowest compressive strength at 28 days after incorporation in mortar. This research investigates the impact of solution concentration and solution-to-binder ratio (S/B) on the volume changes in alkali-activated slags with sodium hydroxide at 20 °C. Autogenous and thermal strains are monitored with a customized testing device in which thermal variations are controlled. Consequently, both the autogenous strain and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) are determined. Heat flow and internal relative humidity (IRH) are also monitored in parallel, making this research a multifaceted study. The magnitudes of autogenous strain and CTE are higher than those of ordinary Portland cement paste. Decreasing the solution concentration or S/B generally decreases the autogenous strain (swelling and shrinkage) and the CTE. The shrinkage amounted to 87 to 1981 µm/m, while the swelling reached between 27 and 295 µm/m and was only present in half of the compositions. The amplitude of the CTE, which increases up to 55 µm/m/°C for some compositions while the CTE of OPC remains between 20 and 25 µm/m/°C, can be explained by the high CTE of the solution in comparison with water. Aβ peptides are known to bind neural plasma membranes in a process leading to the deposit of Aβ-enriched plaques. These extracellular structures are characteristic of Alzheimer's disease, the major cause of late-age dementia. The mechanisms of Aβ plaque formation and deposition are far from being understood. A vast number of studies in the literature describe the efforts to analyze those mechanisms using a variety of tools. The present review focuses on biophysical studies mostly carried out with model membranes or with computational tools. This review starts by describing basic physical aspects of lipid phases and commonly used model membranes (monolayers and bilayers). This is followed by a discussion of the biophysical techniques applied to these systems, mainly but not exclusively Langmuir monolayers, isothermal calorimetry, density-gradient ultracentrifugation, and molecular dynamics. The Methodological Section is followed by the core of the review, which includes a summary of important results obtained with each technique. The last section is devoted to an overall reflection and an effort to understand Aβ-bilayer binding. Concepts such as Aβ peptide membrane binding, adsorption, and insertion are defined and differentiated. The roles of membrane lipid order, nanodomain formation, and electrostatic forces in Aβ–membrane interaction are separately identified and discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Regulatory cystathionine β-synthase (CBS) domains are widespread in proteins; however, difficulty in structure determination prevents a comprehensive understanding of the underlying regulation mechanism. Tetrameric microbial inorganic pyrophosphatase containing such domains (CBS-PPase) is allosterically inhibited by AMP and ADP and activated by ATP and cell alarmones diadenosine polyphosphates. Each CBS-PPase subunit contains a pair of CBS domains but binds cooperatively to only one molecule of the mono-adenosine derivatives. We used site-directed mutagenesis of Desulfitobacterium hafniense CBS-PPase to identify the key elements determining the direction of the effect (activation or inhibition) and the "half-of-the-sites" ligand binding stoichiometry. Seven amino acid residues were selected in the CBS1 domain, based on the available X-ray structure of the regulatory domains, and substituted by alanine and other residues. The interaction of 11 CBS-PPase variants with the regulating ligands was characterized by activity measurements and isothermal titration calorimetry. Lys100 replacement reversed the effect of ADP from inhibition to activation, whereas Lys95 and Gly118 replacements made ADP an activator at low concentrations but an inhibitor at high concentrations. Replacement of these residues for alanine increased the stoichiometry of mono-adenosine phosphate binding by twofold. These findings identified several key protein residues and suggested a "two non-interacting pairs of interacting regulatory sites" concept in CBS-PPase regulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Portland cement has a limited shelf life because of the prehydration that can occur during storage. One approach to mitigating strength losses observed for concrete is to pretreat cement with a protective coating to slow the advance of prehydration. This study compared cement pretreatments with alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) wax and a combination of AKD + paraffin wax to a more traditional pretreatment approach using oleic acid. After exposing the treated cements to elevated temperature and humidity conditions, paste and mortar calorimetry tests showed improved resistance to prehydration reactions. The cements aged up to 12 weeks under the accelerated regime showed strength improvement for the mortars made with AKD and AKD + paraffin-treated cements relative to the mortars made with oleic acid-treated cement and mortars made with untreated cement. Background: Relapse of Candida albicans urinary tract infection (UTI) is frequent despite appropriate treatment, as commonly used antifungals such fluconazole and flucytosine are only fungistatics. To improve treatment of Candida UTI and decrease relapses, understanding the long-term metabolic activity and survival of C. albicans in urine containing antifungals at minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) is needed. Methods: we monitored the survival, metabolic activity and consumption of glucose and proteins by C. albicans using conventional methods and isothermal microcalorimetry (IMC). We also investigated the influence of dead Candida cells on the growth of their living counterparts. Results: For 33 days, weak activity was observed in samples containing antifungals in which C. albicans growth rate was reduced by 48%, 60% and 88%, and the lag increased to 172 h, 168 h and 6 h for amphotericin, flucytosine and fluconazole, respectively. The metabolic activity peaks corresponded to the plate counts but were delayed compared to the exhaustion of resources. The presence of dead cells promoted growth in artificial urine, increasing growth rate and reducing lag in similar proportions. Conclusions: Even with antifungal treatment, C. albicans relapses are possible. The low metabolic activity of surviving cells leading to regrowth and chlamydospore formation possibly supported by autophagy are likely important factors in relapses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The amyloidogenic Aβ peptides are widely considered as a pathogenic agent in Alzheimer's disease. Aβ(1-42) would form aggregates of amyloid fibrils on the neuron plasma membranes, thus perturbing neuronal functionality. Conflicting data are available on the influence of bilayer order on Aβ(1-42) binding to membranes. In the present study, a biophysical approach was used in which isothermal calorimetry and surface pressure measurements were applied to explore the interaction of Aβ(1-42) in either monomeric, oligomeric, or fibrillar form with model membranes (bilayers or monolayers) in the liquid-ordered state that were either electrically neutral or negatively charged. In the latter case, this contained phosphatidic acid, cardiolipin, or ganglioside. The calorimetric studies showed that Aβ(1-42) fibrils, oligomers, and monomers could bind and/or be inserted into bilayers, irrespective of electric charge, in the liquid-ordered state, except that monomers could not interact with electrically neutral bilayers. The monolayer studies in the Langmuir balance demonstrated that Aβ(1-42) aggregation hindered peptide insertion into the monolayer, hindered insertion in the decreasing order of monomer > oligomer > fibril, and that lipid composition did not cause large differences in insertion, apart from a slight facilitation of monomer and oligomer insertion by gangliosides. This study examines the impact of particle size on the setting behavior of tricalcium silicate powders. The setting behavior was evaluated using ISO 6876 indentation testing and isothermal induction calorimetry techniques. The objective was to compare the outcomes obtained from these methods and establish a correlation between particle size and setting characteristics. The cement pastes were manually mixed with a water-to-solid ratio of 0.66 for conducting indentation tests according to ISO 6876, while calorimetry measurements were performed using isothermal (conduction) calorimetry at room temperature. The findings demonstrate a significant influence of smaller particle sizes on accelerating the hydration process of cement pastes, resulting in a reduction of setting time by up to 24%. Moreover, the final setting times obtained through the indentation method closely approximate the inflection points of the acceleration curves acquired by calorimetry, with time deviations of less than 12% regardless of particle size. This study aimed to investigate the heat generated during the hydration process in cementitious composites containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The cumulative heat release and heat flow of these cementitious composites were measured over a period of 168 h using isothermal calorimetry. Three different MWCNT dosages, 0.05 wt%, 0.1 wt%, and 0.2 wt%, along with two different sonication times for the solution, which were 20 min and 60 min, were applied in the experimental program. The results reveal that the incorporation of MWCNTs and the use of a naphthalene-based superplasticizer to disperse the nanotubes generally led to a reduction in heat emission during the early stages of hydration, a lower first peak value in the initial stage of hydration, and a significant delay in the acceleration period compared with the reference sample lacking this superplasticizer. Furthermore, the results demonstrate that both the dosage of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and the sonication time have an impact on the heat emission and hydration process since the same amount of superplasticizer was applied to all pastes. An increase in the MWCNT dosage led to a decrease in the rate of hydration heat at the main peak for all pastes. Additionally, longer sonication times resulted in lower values of heat generated, reduced main peak values in the heat rate evolution, and generally extended delays in the occurrence of the main peak. Cement production contributes significantly to carbon dioxide emissions. Alkali-activated materials offer an environmentally friendly alternative due to their comparable strength, durability and low-carbon emissions while utilizing wastes and industrial by-products. Wood ash is a waste material that shows promising results as a partial replacement for Portland cement and precursors in alkali-activated systems. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of ground wood ash on the mechanical properties of alkali-activated mortars. Wood ash was incorporated as a 0 wt%, 10 wt% and 20 wt% partial replacement for ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS). The wood ashes were ground in a planetary ball mill for 10 and 20 min. Sodium silicate (Na2SiO3), sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) were used as alkali activators. The results demonstrated that ground wood ash improved the mechanical properties of alkali-activated systems compared to untreated wood ash. Weakly coordinating anions (WCAs) have attracted much attention in recent years due to their ability to stabilise highly reactive cations. It may well be argued, however, that a profound understanding of what truly defines a WCA is still lacking, and systematic studies to unravel counterion effects are scarce. In this work, we investigate a supramolecular pseudorotaxane formation reaction, subject to a selection of anions, ranging from strongly to weakly coordinating, which not only aids in fostering our knowledge about anion coordination properties, but also provides valuable theoretical insight into the nature of the mechanical bond. We employ state-of-the-art DFT-based methods and tools, combined with isothermal calorimetry and 1 H NMR experiments, to compute anion-dependent Gibbs free association energies Δ G a , as well as to evaluate intermolecular interactions. We find correlations between Δ G a and the anions' solvation energies, which are exploited to calculate physico-chemical reaction parameters in the context of coordinating anions. Furthermore, we show that the binding situation within the (pseudo)rotaxanes can be mostly understood by straight-forward electrostatic considerations. In this study, geopolymer pastes with 60% metakaolin (MK) and 40% ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) were synthesized. To determine the influence of the alkaline activator concentration, modulus, and the liquid/solid (L/S) ratio on setting time and compressive strength, the geopolymerization process and microstructures of MK/GGBFS-blended geopolymer pastes were analyzed using isothermal calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, mercury intrusion porosimetry, and scanning electron microscopy. Acid dissolution was employed to measure reaction extent. The results showed that the initial setting time of the geopolymer pastes was between 68 and 226 min, and the initial setting and final setting time was apart about by 10 min. For the same variable, the total heat released was positively correlated to the reaction extent. Available silicate content increased the reaction rate and intensity at the initial stage, whereas the OH− concentration controlled the reaction extent in the long term. A limited reaction extent existed in the geopolymeric reaction even if the system contained sufficient alkali content and medium. An increase in the L/S ratio increased the reaction extent. The highest reaction extent of 86.3% was found in the study. Additionally, increasing the L/S ratio reduced the compressive strength by increasing the porosity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The initial discovery phase of protein modulators, which consists of filtering molecular libraries and in vitro direct binding validation, is central in drug discovery. Thus, virtual screening of large molecular libraries, together with the evaluation of binding affinity by isothermal calorimetry, generates an efficient experimental setup. Herein, we applied virtual screening for discovering small molecule inhibitors of MDM2, a major negative regulator of the tumor suppressor p53, and thus a promising therapeutic target. A library of 20 million small molecules was screened against an averaged model derived from multiple structural conformations of MDM2 based on published structures. Selected molecules originating from the computational filtering were tested in vitro for their direct binding to MDM2 via isothermal titration calorimetry. Three new molecules, representing distinct chemical scaffolds, showed binding to MDM2. These were further evaluated by exploring structure-similar chemical analogues. Two scaffolds were further evaluated by de novo synthesis of molecules derived from the initial molecules that bound MDM2, one with a central oxoazetidine acetamide and one with benzene sulfonamide. Several molecules derived from these scaffolds increased wild-type p53 activity in MCF7 cancer cells. Bio-based nanoemulsions are part of green pest management for sustainable agriculture. This study assessed the physicochemical properties and the herbicidal activities of the peppermint essential oil nanoemulsions (PNs) in concentrations 1.0–10% stabilized by Eco-Polysorbate 80 on germinating seeds and young plants of maize and barnyard grass. Based on the design of experiment (DOE) results, the final nanoemulsion formulations were obtained with 1, 1.5, 2, and 5% of essential oil concentration. Biological analyses were conducted to select the most promising sample for selective control of barnyard grass in maize. Seedlings growing in the presence of PNs displayed an overall inhibition of metabolism, as expressed by the calorimetric analyses, which could result from significant differences in both content and composition of carbohydrates. Concentration–response sub estimation showed that leaf-sprayed concentration of PN causing 10% of maize damage is equal to 2.2%, whereas doses causing 50% and 90% of barnyard grass damage are 1.1% and 1.7%, respectively. Plants sprayed with PN at 5% or 10% concentration caused significant drops in relative water content in leaves and Chlorophyll a fluorescence 72 h after spraying. In summary, peppermint nanoemulsion with Eco-Polysorbate 80 at 2% concentration is a perspective preparation for selective control of barnyard grass in maize. This work aims to apply isothermal calorimetry for the determination of the oxidative stability of bulk oils by deriving kinetic and thermodynamic parameters. The method consists of measuring the heat flow produced during the oxidation of the oils in the presence of oxygen. To this purpose, an oil was recovered from olive seeds, the solid waste derived from the transformation of olives, by using two different technologies: supercritical carbon dioxide and mechanical press. The oxidative stability of both extracted oils was then compared with commercial sunflower, soybean, corn, and rice oils. The kinetic and thermodynamic parameters, obtained from the analysis of isothermal calorimetry traces at 60 °C, allowed the calculation of the oxidizability index obtaining the following ranking: olive seeds by supercritical carbon dioxide (3.55 ± 0.4 × 10−3 (s/M)0.5) > sunflower (3.42 ± 0.8 × 10−3 (s/M)0.5) > olive seeds by mechanical press (3.07 ± 0.3 × 10−3 (s/M)0.5) > soybean (2.44 ± 0.6 × 10−3 (s/M)0.5) > corn (1.11 ± 0.4 × 10−3 (s/M)0.5) > rice oils (0.98 ± 0.4 × 10−3 (s/M)0.5). The results were then supported with the analysis of total phenolic content, antioxidant activity, fatty acid profile, and peroxide values. Common alkali-activated materials (AAMs) are usually manufactured with highly alkaline solutions. However, alkaline solutions are dangerous for workers who must wear gloves, masks, and glasses when handling them. This issue makes common (or two-part) AAMs not user-friendly and problematic for bulk production if no safety procedures are followed. In this paper, the possibility of manufacturing alkali-activated pastes and mortars without alkaline solution is investigated. These innovative one-part AAMs have been prepared with metakaolin as the aluminosilicate precursor, potassium-rich biomass ash as the alkaline activator, and water. AAMs have been prepared by varying the K/Al molar ratio: pastes have been studied in terms of reaction kinetics, through isothermal calorimetry, and mortars have been tested in terms of mechanical compressive strength. Results show that the K/Al molar ratio governs both the reaction kinetics and the mechanical strength of these innovative materials. The highest compressive strength is obtained when the K/Al ratio is equal to 2.5 and the water/solid ratio is equal to 0.49. If biomass ash is heated at 700 °C to decompose the calcium carbonate, its reactivity and the final compressive strength increase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The worldwide production of cement is growing every year due to its increased use in the construction. Cement production is affiliated with an environmental concern as it contributes to the CO2 emissions. It is imperative to reduce the cement production by incorporating supplementary cementitious materials in the cement composites. In this research study, wheat straw ash (WSA) was used as an alternate of ordinary Portland cement. The ash was ground separately with a ball mill and a disintegrator mill as well as with a combination of both to enhance its pozzolanic efficiency. Mortar and paste specimens were made by substituting cement with WSA (20% by weight). Ash specimens were examined in terms of particle size distribution, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray fluorescence analyses. The performance of the ash specimens in cement composites was examined via compressive and flexural strengths, and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) tests. Isothermal calorimetric, thermogravimetric analyses (TGA), mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were also employed on the specimens. The results revealed that the particle size of the wheat straw ash specimens significantly reduced and specific surface area enhanced when ground with a combination of both milling techniques. Cement composites made with this type of ash demonstrated improved mechanical and physical properties, accelerated hydration reaction at the early ages, reduce calcium hydroxide content at the later ages, and densified microstructure. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different solutions for vacuum impregnation (VI) of fresh-cut (FC) apples through an innovative multi-analytical approach. In particular, the individual and synergistic effects of ascorbic acid and calcium lactate on the preservation of freshness of FC apples was assessed through color, texture, microscopy, isothermal calorimetry, and time-domain nuclear magnetic resonance (TD-NMR) evaluations. The analysis was performed immediately after VI and after 24 h of refrigerated storage. The obtained results showed a good preservation of color and higher firmness in the impregnated samples. Concerning the metabolic heat production, a decrease following the VI treatment was observed, especially when the combined solution was used for the impregnation. The TD-NMR studies showed higher changes in terms of signal intensity and transversal relaxation time T2 after 24 h of storage, evidencing the meta-stability of the plant material for its dynamic tissue nature, and the dewatering/impregnation processes evolution until the achievement of dynamic equilibrium. The amount of fly ash from the incineration of sewage sludge is increasing all over the world, and its utilization is becoming a serious environmental problem. In the study, a type of sewage sludge ash (SSA) collected directly from the municipal sewage treatment plant was used. Five levels of cement replacement (2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, 10% and 20%) and unchanged water-to-binder (w/b) ratio (0.55) were used. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effect of sewage sludge ash (SSA) on the hydration heat process of cement mortars. The heat of the hydration of cement mortars was monitored by the isothermal calorimetric method for 7 days at 23 °C. The analysis of chemical composition and particle size distribution was performed on the tested material. The tests carried out have shown that SSA particles have irregular grain morphology and, taking into account the chemical composition consists mainly of oxides such as CaO, P2O5, SiO2 and Al2O3. The concentration of these compounds affects the hydration process of cement mortars doped with SSA. In turn, the content of selected heavy metals in the tested ash should not pose a threat to the environment. Calorimetric studies proved that the hydration process is influenced by the presence of SSA in cement mortars. The studies showed that the rate of heat generation decreased (especially in the initial setting period) with the increasing replacement of cement by SSA, which also reduced the amount of total heat compared to the control cement mortar. The use of plants that have high allelopathic potential as natural herbicides in the form of aqueous extracts is gaining popularity in environmentally friendly agriculture. Usually, their effect on the germination and growth of weeds is investigated. However, less attention is paid to the effect of the allelopathic compounds from extracts on cultivated plants. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of herbal extracts that have allelopathic properties on selected physiological and biochemical processes of two plants of great economic importance—white mustard (Sinapis alba L.) and oilseed rape (Brassica napus L. var. oleifera). The extracts were prepared from mountain arnica (Arnica montana L.), ribwort (Plantago lanceolata L.), hypericum (Hypericum perforatum L.), common milfoil (Achillea millefolium L.), sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) and sage (Salvia officinalis L.). The germination of white mustard and oilseed rape was most inhibited by the extracts that were prepared from sage and sunflower. Additionally, in the germinating plants, the sunflower extracts increased the membrane permeability, which indicates membrane injuries. The metabolic changes in the plants were monitored using isothermal calorimetry and FT-Raman spectroscopy. The total heat production, which provided information about the metabolic activity of the white mustard and oilseed rape, was decreased the most by the sage extract but generally all of the tested extracts disturbed the shape of the heat emission curves compared to the water control. The impact of the allelopathic compounds that are present in the herbal extracts on the metabolism of the seedlings was clearly visible on the FT-Raman spectra—in the fatty acids and flavonoids range, confirmed using a cluster analysis. In conclusion, the herbal extracts from medicinal plants that have herbicidal activity could be used as a natural herbicide for weed control, but since they may also have negative impacts on cultivated plants, preliminary tests are advisable to find the extract from the species that has the least negative effect on a protected crop. The current study investigated the development of a sustainable thermo-chemical approach to effectively optimize MgO-waste activated GGBS formulations, using four types of magnesium oxide (MgO) waste materials with ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) to develop binary cementitious systems (MgO-GGBS). This stems from the expected complexity of cementitious binder optimization outcomes into a simpler analytic form, enhancing the rapid delivery of optimization results and contributing to the global awareness of sustainable approaches and use of industrial wastes. Three levels of Portland cement by weight (90, 80, and 70 wt.%) was replaced with MgO wastes including an industrial by-product (GGBS) to develop an experimental regime. Investigation was carried out by employing an experiment-based optimisation technique (thermo-chemical approach), which involved the design of an experimental regime and application of experimental tests (pH measurements, thermogravimetric and derivative thermogravimetric analysis—TG/DTG and isothermal calorimetry), establishment of design variable/parameters, measurement of the design performance of the identified design parameters, and review of the relationship between the independent (control) and dependent variables (MgO wastes and their compositions). The experimental test results successfully optimised the binder compositions, established the best performing binder system (MG1), and provided an in-depth insight into the thermal stability and hydration kinetics of the investigated binder systems. The study presents results of calorimetric tests of three different cements. Two Ordinary Portland cements, CEM I 52.5 R and CEM I 42.5 R, and one Blastfurnace cement, CEM III/A 42.5 N LH/HSR/NA, were analysed. The analysis has shown that the empirical formulas derived based on the results can successfully replace the Arrhenius formula in determination of the hydration rate in relation to curing temperature. It was proven that the hydration rate in relation to the curing temperature changes with the progression of hydration. The study introduces an En coefficient which determines the influence of curing temperature on generation of heat. Results of the study have shown that the value of En is not constant and changes with the progression of hydration process. Proposed method of numerical modelling of the total heat generated and generation rate based on obtained results allows for the calculation of those two parameters for any curing conditions. This study covers an in-depth investigation into the properties and practicality of the utilization of up to 40% Alumina Waste Filler (AWF) as a partial Portland Cement (PC) replacement material. AWF is a by-product from the recycling of aluminium, produced when salt slag is smelted and cleaned. Its use in concrete will lessen the landfill requirements for AWF disposal, and reduce the strain of the growing requirements and cost of PC. The results obtained from this study showed that the addition of AWF to the concrete mix caused a reduction in the compressive and tensile splitting strength values, and a less-workable concrete was achieved for every increase in the quantity of AWF added to each mix. The addition of AWF influenced the hydration reaction process and reduced the cumulative production of the heat of hydration over time, whilst the permeability of the concrete decreased. Many calorimetric studies have been carried out to investigate the reaction process of alkali-activated slag paste. However, the origin of the induction period and action mechanism of soluble Si in the dissolution of slag are still not clear. Moreover, the mechanisms behind different reaction periods are not well described. In this study, the reaction kinetics of alkali-activated slag paste was monitored by isothermal calorimetry and the effect of soluble Si was investigated through a dissolution test. The results showed that occurrence of the induction period in hydration of alkali-activated slag paste depended on the presence of soluble Si in alkaline activator and the soluble Si slowed down the dissolution of slag. A dissolution theory-based mechanism was introduced and applied to the dissolution of slag, showing good interpretation of the action mechanism of soluble Si. Seven dimethyl-substituted optically active pyridino-18-crown-6 ethers containing various substituents at position 4 of the pyridine ring were studied with regards to the electron-donating and -withdrawing effects of substituents on enantiomeric recognition. In order to compile this set of compounds, we prepared four novel pyridino-18-crown-6 ethers, including an intermediate of a new synthetic route for a formerly reported crown ether. The discriminating ability of these pyridino-crown ethers with C2-symmetry toward the enantiomers of protonated primary amines was examined by isothermal titration calorimetry. This study aims to investigate the effect of essential oils extracted from wood residues of Picea abies on the growth of Escherichia coli. The essential oils were extracted by supercritical carbon dioxide, leading to a yield of 3.4 ± 0.5% (w/w) in 120 min. The antimicrobial effect was tested at 37 °C by isothermal calorimetry. The heat-flow (dq/dt vs. time) was integrated to give a fractional reaction curve (α vs. time). Such curves were fitted by a modified Gompertz function to give the lag-time (λ) and the maximum growth rate (µmax) parameters. The results showed that λ was linearly correlated with E. coli concentration (λ = 1.4 h/log (CFU/mL), R2 = 0.997), whereas µmax was invariant. Moreover, the overall heat was nearly constant to all the dilutions of E. coli. Instead, when the essential oil was added (with concentrations ranging from 1 to 5 mg/L) to a culture of E. coli (104 CFU/mL), the lag-time increased from 14.1 to 33.7 h, and the overall heat decreased from 2120 to 2.37 J. The results obtained by the plate count technique were linear with the lag-time (λ), where (λ = −7.3 × log (CFU/mL) + 38.3, R2 = 0.9878). This suggested a lower capacity of E. coli to metabolize the substrate in the presence of the essential oils. We present a novel approach to a personalized therapeutic concept for solid tumors. We illustrate this on a rare childhood tumor for which only a generalized treatment concept exists using carbonic anhydrase IX and aquaporin 1 inhibitors. The use of microcalorimetry as a refined in vitro method for evaluation of drug susceptibility in organotypic slice culture has not previously been established. Rapid microcalorimetric drug response assessment can refine a general treatment concept when it is applied in cases in which tumors do not respond to conventional chemo-radiation treatment. For solid tumors, which do not respond to classical treatment, and especially for rare tumors without an established protocol rapid microcalorimetric drug response testing presents an elegant novel approach to test alternative therapeutic approaches. While improved treatment concepts have led to improved outcome over the past decades, the prognosis of high risk disease is still poor and rethinking of clinical trial design is necessary. A small patient population combined with the necessity to assess experimental therapies for rare solid tumors rather at the time of diagnosis than in relapsed or refractory patients provides great challenges. The reaction kinetics of four commercial ground granulated blast furnace slags with varying percentages of MgO (6 to 14 wt.%), activated with four different doses of sodium metasilicate, were evaluated using isothermal calorimetry. The reaction kinetics were strongly dependent on the dose of the alkaline activator used, and the chemical and physical properties of the slag. When using low concentrations of sodium metasilicate as an activator, the MgO content in the slag influences the kinetics of the reaction, while the CaO content plays a more significant role when the concentration of metasilicate is increased. This study elucidated a close relationship between the dose of the alkali-activator and the chemistry of the slag used, although it was not possible to identify a clear correlation between any of the published chemically-based "slag quality moduli" and the calorimetry results, highlighting the complexity of blast furnace slag glass chemistry, and the importance of the physical properties of the slag in defining its reactivity.
