To promote the conservation of aquatic ecosystems, it is essential to delve into restoration techniques for selecting the most sustainable option for combating eutrophication. Hence, we study the effects of novel phosphorus (P) adsorbents (magnetic carbonyl iron particles, HQ, and two non-magnetic P adsorbents: CFH-12® and Phoslock®) on the growth and photosynthetic activity of Chlorella sp. More specifically, the intrinsic photochemical efficiency of PSII (ΦPSII) and the nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) were measured in Chlorella sp. after different contact times with different concentrations of these adsorbents. Our initial hypothesis was that non-magnetic P adsorbents have more effects on the organisms than magnetic ones. However, our results did not show strong evidence of inhibitory effects caused by HQ nor CFH-12® (no significant effect size on ΦPSII), while Phoslock® showed inhibitory effects on the photosynthetic activity of Chlorella sp. for any of its concentrations (NPQ = 0). Lastly, we compared the effect of the studied P adsorbents in a real application scenery (Honda wetland, Spain). For this study case, it is likely that CFH-12® and HQ doses would not cause any negative effects on photosynthetic efficiency while Phoslock®, by limiting light availability, will drastically reduce it. In this study, we investigated the use of functionalized deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as a medium for CO2 capture integrated with CO2 desorption and biofixation in microalgal culture, as an approach for carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). The newly devised DES formulation—comprising choline chloride, ethylene glycol, and monoethanolamine—demonstrated a significant advancement in CO2 absorption capacity compared with conventional solvents. Effective CO2 desorption from the solvent was also achieved, recovering nearly 90% of the captured CO2. We then examined the application of the functionalized DESs to promote microalgal cultivation using a Chlorella sp. strain. The experimental results indicated that microalgae exposed to DES-desorbed CO2 exhibited heightened growth rates and enhanced biomass production, signifying the potential of DES-driven CO2 capture for sustainable microalgal biomass cultivation. Microalgae are highly studied microorganisms for the production of high-value products due to their high content of proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and chlorophyll. These compounds are refined to obtain profitable industrial products. This article analyzes the lipid production of Chlorella sp. biomass, considering 18 scenarios for its production, with 9 of these being partially supplemented with swine wastewater. A 1 ha area was considered for biomass cultivation, primary and secondary biomass harvesting, and lipid extraction. Using simulation in the software SuperPro Designer v10, parameters such as CO2 capture (from a thermoelectric power plant), freshwater consumption, wastewater consumption, energy consumption, and unit production cost were evaluated. The results show that the production cost is high, ranging from 836.9 US $/kg to 1131.5 US $/kg of produced lipids, with a maximum CO2 capture of 454 kg of CO2/kg of lipids. The use of wastewater reduces the production cost by approximately 10%. Algal Organic Matter (AOM) is derived from the dissolved organic matter composition of the algal species being observed. In this study, excitation–emission fluorescence spectroscopy was used to determine Chlorella sp.'s AOM and pigment characteristics in varying algal biomass concentrations. The AOM and pigment characteristics were observed at 400–600 nm and 600–800 nm fluorescence emission, respectively, with an excitation spectrum of 300–450 nm. F450/680 was computed based on the ratio between the dissolved organic matter contribution at 450 nm and chlorophyll-a at 680 nm. F450/680 positively correlated with algal biomass (r = 0.96) at an excitation wavelength of 405 nm. In the treatment of wastewater containing only chemical oxygen demand (COD) by Chlorella sp., the cell activity and proliferation ability of Chlorella sp. decreased with the culture time, which affected the removal of COD in wastewater. To solve these problems, the Chlorella sp.–natural microorganism symbiosis system was prepared. The system was used to explore how natural microorganisms affect the cell activity and the proliferation ability of Chlorella sp. in wastewater. In the treatment of COD by Chlorella sp., the removal rate of COD decreased from 45.47% to 28.88%, with a decrease in the cell activity and proliferation ability of Chlorella sp. In the Chlorella sp.–natural microorganism symbiotic system, the removal rate of COD reached 45.75%. With the introduction of natural microorganisms, the circulation of CO2 and O2 between Chlorella sp. and natural microorganisms promoted photosynthesis and respiration, which enhanced the cell activity of Chlorella sp. Under the condition that the dosage of natural microorganisms was between 1% and 6%, the concentration of Chlorella sp. was close to the logarithmic growth phase, which maintained the proliferation ability of Chlorella sp. Conventional biological wastewater treatment systems have a low pathogen removal capacity. Microalgae-based systems are sustainable and low-cost alternatives for wastewater treatment and are capable of removing pathogens from domestic effluents. Other microorganisms have been identified as alternative indicators of disinfection since they have greater resistance than Escherichia coli, either because of the formation of spores or because of other mechanisms of protection, and because they spread in wastewater treatment plants; the most important are Clostridium perfringens and Staphylococcus spp. This study assessed the influence of microalgal strains (e.g., Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus acutus Meyen) and the addition of CO2 and O2 on the removal of C. perfringens and Staphylococcus spp. from domestic wastewater in microalgal–bacterial systems. The removal of C. perfringens (2.5 to 3.2 log units) and Staphylococcus sp. (1.8 to 2.0 log units) was higher when using Chlorella sp. inoculum. The addition of CO2 and O2 did not have a significant effect on the removal of pathogenic bacteria. The main mechanism of C. perfringens removal was by means of toxins and bactericidal substances produced by the microalgae, while Staphylococcus spp. removal also occurred through photooxidative processes. The removal of microalgae represents a problematic part of the water decontamination process, in which most techniques are expensive and non-ecological. In the paper, we focus on the synergistic relationship between microscopic filamentous fungi and algal culture. In the process of decontamination of a model sample containing ammonium ions, efficient biocoagulation, resp. co-pelletization of dried algae Chlorella sp. and Aspergillus niger sensu stricto are shown. The microscopic filamentous fungus species A. niger was added to a culture of an algal suspension of Chlorella sp., where the adhesion of the algal cells to the fungi subsequently occurred due to the electrostatic effect of the interaction, while the flocculation activity was approximately 70 to 80%. The algal cells adhered to the surface of the A. niger pellets, making them easily removable from the solution. The ability of filamentous fungi to capture organisms represents a great potential for the biological isolation of microalgae (biocoagulation) from production solutions because microalgae are considered to be a promising renewable source of oil and fermentables for bioenergy. This form of algae removal, or its harvesting, also represents a great low-cost method for collecting algae not only as a way of removing unnecessary material but also for the purpose of producing biofuels. Algae are a robust bioabsorbent for absorbing lipids from the environment, which after treatment can be used as a component of biodiesel. Chemical analyses also presented potential ecological innovation in the area of biofuel production. The present study aimed to optimize synthetic wastewater composition as a mixotrophic medium for enhanced growth and lipid accumulation coupled with high nitrogen removal by the green microalga Chlorella sp. Individual effects of the three main independent variables (nitrate concentration, seawater ratio, and glycerol supplementation) were tested initially, then response surface methodology (RSM) was subsequently performed to explore the optimum combined conditions. The highest lipid productivity of 37.60 mg/L day was recorded at 25% seawater. Glycerol supplementation enhanced both lipid content and biomass production, which resulted in the highest recorded lipid productivity of 42.61 mg/L day at 4 g/L glycerol. Central composite design followed by numerical optimization was further applied which suggested NaNO3 concentration at 101.5 mg/L, seawater ration of 23.8%, and glycerol supplementation of 0.25 g/L as the optimum conditions for dual maximum lipid productivity and nitrogen removal of 46.9 mg/L day and 98.0%, respectively. Under the optimized conditions, dry weight and lipid content increased by 31.9% and 20.3%, respectively, over the control, which resulted in increase in lipid productivity by 71.5%. In addition, optimization process resulted in pronounced changes in fatty acid proportions where saturated fatty acids increased by 7.4% in the optimized culture with simultaneous reduction of polyunsaturated fatty acids. The estimated biodiesel characteristics calculated from the fatty acid methyl ester (FAMEs) profile showed agreement with the international standards, while optimized cultures showed an 8.5% lower degree of unsaturation, which resulted in higher cetane numbers and lower iodine values. With the accelerated urbanization and rapid development of the industrial and agricultural sectors, concern about the pollution of water environments is becoming more widespread. Algal blooms of varying sizes are becoming increasingly frequent in lakes and reservoirs; temperatures, nutrients, heavy metals, and dissolved oxygen are the factors that influence algal bloom occurrence. However, knowledge of the combined effect of heavy metals and temperature on algal growth remains limited. Thus, this study investigated how specific concentrations of heavy metals affect algal growth at different temperatures; to this end, two heavy metals were used (0.01 mg/L Pb2+ and 0.05 mg/L Cr6+) at three incubation temperatures (15, 25, and 30 °C) with the alga Chlorella sp. A higher incubation temperature contributed to a rise in soluble proteins, which promoted algal growth. The density of algal cells increased with temperature, and catalase (CAT) decreased with increasing temperature. Chlorella sp. growth and catalase activity were optimal at 30 °C (algal cell density: 1.46 × 107 cell/L; CAT activity: 29.98 gprot/L). Pb2+ and Cr6+ significantly promoted Chlorella sp. growth during incubation at 25 and 30 °C, respectively. At specific temperatures, 0.01 mg/L Pb2+ and 0.05 mg/L Cr6+ promoted the production of soluble proteins and, hence, the growth of Chlorella sp. As the human population grows and the demand for food grows with it, the recycling, or containment of materials is important for resource consumption. Nitrogen is one of the main plant nutrients, most commonly used as the chemical substance urea. Because urea is very soluble and at a relatively low temperature (50–60 °C) it hydrolyses easily (releases N2 and CO2) in soil solutions; this is why very large amounts of nitrogen are lost and greenhouse gases are released and this causes serious environmental problems. Therefore, the aim of this study was to create microalgae-enriched nitrogen fertilizers with different binders that inhibit nitrogen leaching from the soil. Binders such as water (W), polyvinyl acetate dispersion (PVAD), molasses (M), potato starch (S), and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) were used in this study and their influence on leaching was analysed. Granular fertilizers were produced in a drum granulator and dryer under equal conditions: granulation time was 7 min, granulation took place at a temperature of 50–60 °C, at a drum rotation speed of 26 rpm, with a 5° inclination angle of the drum. The results show that the highest quantity of the marketable fraction was 43.01 (±3.068%) and it was obtained using urea, with 10% (w/w) microalgae additive, and 11.4% (w/w) of 5% concentration molasses solution. The granules of the fertilizer marketable fraction are similar in size because the size guide number (SGN) of the granules vary in a narrow range and fall within the interval of 287 to 304; this means that the average particle size is ~3 mm. When different binders were used, the average static crushing strength of the granulated fertilizers was lower (approximately 6–12 MPa) than using water alone (approximately 12–16 MPa), but the lower values still fell into the required range. The Mediterranean diet has, among its cornerstones, the use of olive oil for its nutraceutical and organoleptic properties. Despite the numerous merits, olive-oil mill wastewater (OMWW), which is generated by the olive-oil extraction process, is one of the most serious environmental pollutants in the Mediterranean countries. The polluting potential of OMWW is due to its high content of tannins, polyphenols, polyalcohols, pectins and lipids. In order to close the recovery cycle of a fortified citrus olive oils previously developed, we tested the ability of five microalgae of the Chlorella group (SEC_LI_ChL_1, CL_Sc, CL_Ch, FB and Idr) in lowering the percentage of total phenolic compounds in vegetation water. This was obtained with three different extraction processes (conventional, and lemon and orange peels) at three concentrations each (10%, 25% and 50%). The results showed that strains Idr, FB and CL_Sc from the Lake Massaciuccoli can tolerate vegetation water from conventional and lemon peel extractions up to 25%; these strains can also reduce the phenolic compounds within the tests. The application of microalgae for OMWW treatment represents an interesting opportunity as well as an eco-friendly low-cost solution to be developed within companies as a full-scale approach, which could be applied to obtain a fortified microalgal biomass to be employed in nutraceutical fields. Ultraviolet (UV-C) irradiation is the most important part of water filtration, which has no side effects on the environment and has been used in water purification systems in the aquaculture and transistor industries. In this research, the effect of UV-C on Chlorella sp. was investigated. Chlorella sp. was irradiated 0, 1, 2 or 3 times at a fixed flow rate of 6.5 L min−1 and the effects of UV-C LED on the apoptosis rate and death rate of Chlorella sp. were analyzed by flow cytometry after staining cells with the nucleic acid dye SYTOX Green and the membrane-associated protein stain Annexin V-PE Reagent. As a result of UV-C irradiation, the Chlorella sp. cells underwent phosphatidylserine (PS) ectropion and plasma membrane damage, which resulted in death. The effect of UV-C was proportional to the number of times of irradiation. Three doses of UV-C LED irradiation resulted in a 91.76 ± 3.33% death rate, as observed through SYTOX Green staining, with no rebound within 72 h. This research is the first report to observe that delayed cellular apoptosis occurred in Chlorella sp., and we expect that our study can be used as a standard reference for future industrial applications. This paper explores the ability of Chlorella sp. and Scenedesmus sp. to convert landfill leachates into usable metabolites. Different concentrations (0.5, 1, 5, and 10% v/v) of leachate coupled with an inorganic carbon source (Na2CO3, and NaHCO3) were tested to improve biomass production, metabolites synthesis, and removal of NO3 and PO4. The result shows that both strains can effectively grow in media with up to 5% (v/v) leachate, while significantly reducing the concentrations of NO3, and PO4 (80 and 50%, respectively). The present research evaluates the simulation of a system for transforming inland-fisheries wastewater into sustainable fish feed using Designer® software. The data required were obtained from the experimental cultivation of Chlorella sp. in wastewater supplemented with N and P. According to the results, it is possible to produce up to 11,875 kg/year (31.3 kg/d) with a production cost of up to 18 (USD/kg) for dry biomass and 0.19 (USD/bottle) for concentrated biomass. Similarly, it was possible to establish the kinetics of growth of substrate-dependent biomass with a maximum production of 1.25 g/L after 15 days and 98% removal of available N coupled with 20% of P. Microalgae biomass is a viable feedstock for a wide range of industries. Recently, there has also been interest in the ability of microalgae biomass applications for biofuel production. In the meantime, the cultivation of microalgae biomass requires high energy costs, and the application of microalgae for technical purposes is still problematic. A significant part of the cost of biomass arises from the nutrients used for cultivation. Chemical compounds included in the microalgae cultivation media can be replaced by suitable wastes containing nitrogen, phosphorus, and other elements. This could reduce the microalgae biomass cultivation price and allow cheaper biomass to be used for biofuel production. The aim of this work was to comprehensively investigate and optimize the growth process of microalgae using liquid waste (liquid waste after biogas production from sewage sludge and distillers' grain) as a source of nitrogen and phosphorus, and technical glycerol as a carbon source. It was found that higher levels of waste in the cultivation media were found to inhibit the accumulation of microalgal biomass, with the optimum level corresponding to a nitrogen concentration of 0.08 g/L. The influence of technical glycerol from biodiesel production on the yield of microalgal biomass was investigated, and it was found that the addition of 6% glycerol allows an increase in the concentration of microalgal biomass in the cultivation media, from 18.1 to 20.6%.

It is well known that over the last 60 years the trend of long-lived greenhouse gas emissions have shown a strong acceleration. There is an increasing concern and a mounting opposition by public opinion to continue with the use of fossil energy. Western countries are presently involved in a so-called energy transition with the objective of abandoning fossil energy for renewable sources. In this connection, hydrogen can play a central role. One of the sustainable ways to produce hydrogen is the use of microalgae which possess two important natural catalysts: photosystem II and hydrogenase, used to split water and to combine protons and electrons to generate gaseous hydrogen, respectively. For about 20 years of study on photobiological hydrogen production, our scientific hopes were based on the application of the sulfur protocol, which indisputably represented a very important advancement in the field of hydrogen production biotechnology. However, as reported in this review, there is increasing evidence that this strategy is not economically viable. Therefore, a change of paradigm for the photobiological production of hydrogen based on microalgae seems mandatory. This review points out that an increasing number of microalgal strains other than Chlamydomonas reinhardtii are being tested and are able to produce sustainable amount of hydrogen without nutrient starvation and to fulfill this goal including the application of co-cultures. The effect of foliar application of Cyanobacteria and Chlorella sp. monocultures on physiological activity, element composition, development and biomass weight of basket willow (Salix viminalis L.) and the possibility to prepare biofuel from it in the fortification process was studied. Triple foliar plant spraying with non-sonicated monocultures of Cyanobacteria (Anabaena sp. PCC 7120, Microcystis aeruginosa MKR 0105) and Chlorella sp. exhibited a considerably progressive impact on metabolic activity and development of plants. This biofertilization increased cytomembrane impermeability, the amount of chlorophyll in plants, photosynthesis productivity and transpiration, as well as degree of stomatal opening associated with a decreased concentration of intercellular CO2, in comparison to control (treatments with water, Bio-Algeen S90 or with environmental sample). The applied strains markedly increased the element content (N, P, K) in shoots and the productivity of crucial growth enzymes: alkaline or acid phosphorylase, total dehydrogenases, RNase and nitrate reductase. Treatments did not affect energy properties of the burnt plants. These physiological events were associated with the improved growth of willow plants, namely height, length and amount of all shoots and their freshly harvested dry mass, which were increased by over 25% compared to the controls. The effectiveness of these treatments depended on applied monoculture. The plant spraying with Microcystis aeruginosa MKR 0105 was a little more effective than treatment with Chlorella sp. and Anabaena sp. or the environmental sample. The research demonstrate that the studied Cyanobacteria and Chlorella sp. monocultures have prospective and useful potential in production of Salix viminalis L., which is the basic energy plant around the word. In this work, a special batch reactor was used to produce torrefaction material in an inert atmosphere: nitrogen, thermogravimetric analysis and DTA analysis, like Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The combustion process of Salix viminalis L. with TG-MS analysis was conducted as well as study on a willow torrefaction process, obtaining 30% mass reduction with energy loss close to 10%. Comparing our research results to other types of biomasses, the isothermal temperature of 245 °C during thermo-chemical conversion of willow for the carbonized solid biofuel production from Salix viminalis L. biomass fertilized with Cyanobacteria and Chlorella sp. is relatively low. Microalgae is a rich source of polyunsaturated fatty acid. This study was conducted to identify and isolate microalgal strain with the potentials for producing polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and determine its cytotoxic effect on some cancer cells. The algal strain (Chlorella sp. S14) was cultivated using modified BG-11 media, and algal biomass obtained was used for fatty acid extraction. Gas chromatographic–mass spectrometry was used to identify and quantify the levels of the fatty acid constituents. The total content of monounsaturated fatty acids (1.12%) was low compared to polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) (52.87%). Furthermore, n-3 PUFAs accounted for (12.37%) of total PUFAs with the presence of α-linolenic acid (2.16%) and cis-11,14,17-eicosatrienoic acid (2.16%). The PUFA-rich extract did not exhibit a cytotoxic effect on normal cells. Treatment with the PUFA-rich extract (150 µg/mL) significantly reduced cell viability in MCF-7 (31.58%) and A549 (62.56%) cells after the 48 h treatment. Furthermore, treatment of MCF-7 with fatty acid extracts (125 and 150 µg/mL) showed a significant reduction in MDA levels, increase in catalase activities and decrease in GSH level compared to untreated cells. However, a slight decrease in MDA level was observed in A549 cells after the 48 h treatment. There are no significant changes in catalase activities and GSH level in treated A549 cells. However, a slight reduction of NO levels was observed in treated MCF-7 and A549 cells. These results indicate the potentials of PUFA-rich extracts from Chlorella sp. There are numerous strains of Chlorella with a corresponding variety of metabolic pathways. A strain we previously isolated from wastewater in northern Sweden can grow heterotrophically as well as autotrophically in light and has higher lipid contents under heterotrophic growth conditions. The aims of the present study were to characterize metabolic changes associated with the higher lipid contents in order to enhance our understanding of lipid production in microalgae and potentially identify new compounds with utility in sustainable development. Inter alia, the amino acids glutamine and lysine were 7-fold more abundant under heterotrophic conditions, the key metabolic intermediate alpha-ketoglutarate was more abundant under heterotrophic conditions with glucose, and maltose was more abundant under heterotrophic conditions with glycerol than under autotrophic conditions. The metabolite 3-hydroxy-butyric acid, the direct precursor of the biodegradable plastic PHB (poly-3-hydroxy-butyric acid), was also more abundant under heterotrophic conditions. Our metabolomic analysis has provided new insights into the alga's lipid production pathways and identified metabolites with potential use in sustainable development, such as the production of renewable, biodegradable plastics, cosmetics, and nutraceuticals, with reduced pollution and improvements in both ecological and human health. Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is a promising technology to convert wet wastes like septic tank wastes, or septage, to valuable platform chemical, fuels, and materials. However, the byproduct of HTC, process liquid, often contains large amount of nitrogen species (up to 2 g/L of nitrogen), phosphorus, and a variety of organic carbon containing compounds. Therefore, the HTC process liquid is not often treated at wastewater treatment plant. In this study, HTC process liquid was treated with algae as an alternative to commercial wastewater treatment. The HTC process liquid was first diluted and then used to grow Chlorella sp. over a short period of time (15 days). It was found that the algae biomass concentration increased by 644 mg/L over the course of 10 days, and which subsequently removed a majority of the nutrients in the HTC process liquid. Around 600 mg/L of algal biomass was collected in the process liquid at the end of treatment (day 15). Meanwhile, chemical oxygen demand (COD), total phosphorous, total Kheldjal nitrogen, and ammonia were reduced by 70.0, 77.7, 82.2, and 99.0% by fifteen days compared to the untreated wastewater, respectively. We evaluate the effects of nutrient limitation on cellular composition of polar lipid classes/species in Chlorella sp. using modern polar lipidomic profiling methods (liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry; LC-MS/MS). Total polar lipid concentration was highest in nutrient-replete (HN) cultures with a significant reduction in monogalactosyldiacylglycerol (MGDG), phosphatidylglycerol (PG), phosphatidylcholine (PC), and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) class concentrations for nutrient-deplete (LN) cultures. Moreover, reductions in the abundance of MGDG relative to total polar lipids versus an increase in the relative abundance of digalactosyldiacylglycerol (DGDG) were recorded in LN cultures. In HN cultures, polar lipid species composition remained relatively constant throughout culture with high degrees of unsaturation associated with acyl moieties. Conversely, in LN cultures lipid species composition shifted towards greater saturation of acyl moieties. Multivariate analyses revealed that changes in the abundance of a number of species contributed to the dissimilarity between LN and HN cultures but with dominant effects from certain species, e.g., reduction in MGDG 34:7 (18:3/16:4). Results demonstrate that Chlorella sp. significantly alters its polar lipidome in response to nutrient limitation, and this is discussed in terms of physiological significance and polar lipids production for applied microalgal production systems.
