Simple Summary: Historically, one of the strategies the Myanmar Government employed to resolve human–elephant conflict was the capture of whole herds of elephants using the Kheddah system. This involved trapping the herd in a stockade, immediately followed by on-site post-capture taming. After taming, the captured elephants were trained to be utilized as logging elephants. The capture of wild elephants was formally banned in Myanmar in 1985, but occasional, small-scale, captures by the Kheddah system were allowed until 2013. These captures were under the strict control of the Myanmar Government and focused primarily on elephants involved in human–elephant conflict, rather than capturing to supplement the working elephant population. The method itself has largely fallen out of use because capturing an ecologically important, iconic animal is unacceptable and against current welfare requirements. This paper attempts to record the Kheddah system of elephant capture that was employed when the individually selected capture method was impractical for the emergency removal of a herd of marauding elephants. The author presents a description and assessment of the Kheddah method not to endorse it, but to document and discuss a method that was part of Myanmar's elephant-keeping history before it is forgotten. When standard methods of human–elephant conflict mitigation are not successful, free-ranging wild elephants may continue to come into close contact with people. This results in more frequent and severe conflict, with consequences ranging from crop raiding to loss of human and elephant lives. Understandably, in such situations, local communities may want to be rid of entire herds of elephants. While chemical immobilization was being used at this time, it was not logistically possible with the high numbers of elephants engaged in the conflict. This review aims to record the history of an activity that was an important element of Myanmar's timber industry more than three decades ago. In this paper, the author presents a description of Kheddah not to endorse it, but to document (1) the Myanmar elephant population management strategy in the past, before it is forgotten, and (2) the practicality of the Kheddha operation when the singly selected commonly- used immobilization or noosing method of elephant capture is unfeasible. The author attempts to shed light on the modern veterinary procedures that may significantly reduce the notorious historical outcome of Kheddha, especially the resulting mortality of captured elephants, should the Kheddha system of capture ever be used as an emergency solution for ongoing problems of human–elephant conflict in the range states of Asia. Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are a type of cancer cell that spreads from the main tumor to the bloodstream, and they are often the most important among the various entities that can be isolated from the blood. For the diagnosis of cancer, conventional biopsies are often invasive and unreliable, whereas a liquid biopsy, which isolates the affected item from blood or lymph fluid, is a less invasive and effective diagnostic technique. Microfluidic technologies offer a suitable channel for conducting liquid biopsies, and this technology is utilized to extract CTCs in a microfluidic chip by physical and bio-affinity-based techniques. This effort uses functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in a unique microfluidic chip to collect CTCs using a hybrid (physical and bio-affinity-based/guided magnetic) capturing approach with a high capture rate. Accordingly, folic acid-functionalized Fe3O4 nanoparticles have been used to capture MCF-7 (breast cancer) CTCs with capture efficiencies reaching up to 95% at a 10 µL/min flow rate. In the context of global warming, the frequent occurrence of drought has become one of the main reasons affecting the loss of gross primary productivity (GPP) of terrestrial ecosystems. Under the influence of human activities, the vegetation greening trend of the Loess Plateau increased significantly. Therefore, it is of great significance to study the response of GPP to drought in the Loess Plateau under the greening trend. Here, we comprehensively assessed the ability of vegetation indices (VIs) and solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) to capture GPP changes at different seasonal scales and during drought. Specifically, we utilized three vegetation indices: normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), near-infrared reflectance of vegetation (NIRV), and kernel NDVI index (kNDVI), and determined the drought period of the Loess Plateau in 2001 based on the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) and the standardized soil moisture index (SSMI). Moreover, the anomalies of VIs and SIF during the drought period and the relationship with GPP anomalies were compared. The results showed that both SIF and VIs were able to capture changes during the drought period as well as in normal years. Overall, SIF captured drought changes better due to water and heat stress as well as GPP changes compared to VIs. Across different time scales, SIF showed the strongest relationship with GPP (meanR2 = 0.85), followed by NIRV (meanR2 = 0.84), NDVI (meanR2 = 0.76), and kNDVI (meanR2 = 0.74), suggesting that SIF is more sensitive to physiological changes in vegetation. Notably, kNDVI performed best in sparse vegetation (meanR2 = 0.85). In capture during drought, NIRV and kNDVI performed better in less productive land classes; SIF showed superior capture as land use class productivity increased. In addition, GPP anomalies correlated better with kNDVI anomalies (meanR2 = 0.50) than with other index anomalies. This paper proposes a transient event-capturing circuit and adaptive PI control to monitor and improve the transient response of a superbuck converter. The transient event-capturing circuit is composed of coupling and capturing circuits. The coupling circuit converts the output voltage to the sensed voltage, whereas the DC and ripple components are eliminated. By counting the up-crossing and down-crossing numbers of the sensed voltage, the capturing circuit classifies the output voltage response into different transient events according to oscillation cycles. The transient events carry the stability information that can be used to adjust the bandwidth and phase margin. Finally, an adaptive PI controller is implemented with the proposed transient event-capturing circuit to improve the stability and transient response. Experimental results of the 100 W superbuck converter verify the effectiveness of the adaptive PI controller for improving the transient response and stability. The adaptive PI controller eliminates the oscillations due to deviated parameters and operating conditions. In this work, the roasting of an enargite mix was carried out in oxidative conditions. The temperature range of the study was 773–973 K. The mixture had a 4:6:6 molar ratio of enargite, magnetite and coal, respectively. The roasting was made in an open atmosphere. The time was 1 h for each isothermal test. The effect of temperature and weight loss were studied. The results indicate that the temperature affects the products. At 773–873 K, the copper phases were sulfates. When the temperature was increased to 973 K, all the present phases were oxidized, and no arsenic phase was encountered in the XRDs. Therefore, this process is an excellent alternative for roasting copper concentrates with enargite, removing arsenic in the gas phase and generating a calcine that could then go to lixiviation to finally recover the copper through electrowinning. It is well-known that the mining industry in Chile and the world is searching for eco-friendly, highly efficient mineral treatments. This is because the content of toxic elements such as arsenic, antimony, and bismuth have increased in the copper concentrates in the last years. This trend has affected the market of this metal, as well as increased the potential of producing solid wastes that represent a threat to the environment. In this paper, a review on the fundamentals of the current treatments aimed at removing arsenic, antimony, and bismuth from copper concentrates under roasting conditions is presented. The literature survey included the research conducted from 2000 until now and is focused on the different types of roasting of copper concentrates reported in the literature. A summary of the experimental conditions and major findings of each work is discussed. The problem of global warming and climate change has attracted global attention, and reducing the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere is an important step towards solving the problem. This paper mainly introduces the current development status, research hotspots, challenges and some emerging technologies of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS). Among CO2 capture technologies, solvent absorption technology is currently the most mature and widely used technology, among which ionic liquid technology has great application prospects because its molecular structure can be designed and different functional groups can be connected. The surface functionalization of metal–organic frameworks in the adsorption method endows them with excellent CO2 adsorption capacity. In CO2 transportation, temperature and pressure must be considered in pipeline transportation, because they will affect the phase state of CO2 transportation. The impact of impurities on CO2 pipeline transportation is a challenge that affects pipeline design and transportation safety. In CO2 utilization, the key to enhanced oil recovery, gas recovery and displacement of coalbed methane is to increase the recovery rate and increase the storage capacity at the same time. Only by strengthening the research on the adsorption behavior between CO2 and CH4 and revealing the relevant mechanism can innovative technologies be developed. The chemical utilization of CO2 has formed many routes, but they all lack certain advantages. Most scholars are working on catalysts for CO2 conversion, especially copper-based catalysts that can convert CO2 into methanol. The conversion rate of CO2 can be effectively increased through doping or process improvement. The coupling of electrocatalytic technology and renewable energy is an important development direction in the future. In CO2 storage, geological storage is currently the most important method, especially in saline aquifers. There are currently critical issues concerning reservoir integrity and leakage potential that should be further investigated. CO2 leakage will cause serious environmental problems, and the common monitoring methods are reviewed and discussed in this paper. Finally, the research status, hotspots and cooperation networks of CCUS are summarized by using CiteSpace software in order to help the development of CCUS technology. In addition, through the review and analysis, it is found that CCUS is faced with challenges such as low capture efficiency, difficulties in transformation and utilization, high operating costs, lack of strong support policies, and lack of international cooperation, which restrict the further development of CCUS. Simple Summary: Apennine chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica ornata) is a vulnerable subspecies, and creation of new colonies is required for its conservation. Capturing mountain ungulates is not only logistically challenging, but also requires careful planning and clinical monitoring in order to ensure animal welfare and survival. This study reports collective physical capture followed by anesthesia of 21 Apennine chamois for translocation with conservation purposes. The chamois were captured with up-net® (Fondazione Universitaria "Centro Ricerche sulla Gestione della fauna selvatica"—CE.RI.GE.FA.S., Sampeyre—CN) or box-traps, then anesthetized with medetomidine–ketamine–acepromazine and monitored with advanced field techniques, including venous blood gas analysis, which was used for the first time on mountain ungulates in Europe. Despite the risk of metabolic acidosis and catching myopathy, 19 chamois survived and adapted to the new environment to found new colonies, which were monitored through GPS radiocollar data of all released chamois. The Apennine chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica ornata) is one of the rarest subspecies in Italy, listed in Annexes II and IV of the Habitats Directive and currently included as a vulnerable subspecies in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. The Maiella National Park population has recently been defined as a source population for reintroduction into other parks. Since collective captures allow for better selection of target animals for the establishment of new colonies, the aim of this study is to evaluate the physiological conditions and animal welfare in free-ranging Apennine chamois after collective physical capture followed by chemical immobilization with medetomidine 0.054 mg ± 0.007, ketamine 2.14 mg ± 0.28, and acepromazine 0.043 mg ± 0.006. Twenty-one Apennine chamois (18 females and 3 males) were captured and translocated for conservation purposes. The effects of capture and anesthesia were evaluated using clinical variables, hematology, serum biochemistry, and venous blood gas analysis, the latter being used in the field for the first time in chamois capture. A risk of metabolic acidosis and capture myopathy was identified, although it did not compromise the survival of 19 chamois, which adapted to novel environments and founded new colonies, as verified through GPS radiocollars. The protocol applied in this study represents an innovative approach to assessing animal physiology and welfare in collective mountain ungulate captures, useful for improving management activities for conservation purposes. This work demonstrates the potential of calcium- and nickel-crosslinked Gellan Gum (GG) microspheres to capture the Six-Transmembrane Epithelial Antigen of the Prostate 1 (STEAP1) directly from complex Komagataella pastoris mini-bioreactor lysates in a batch method. Calcium-crosslinked microspheres were applied in an ionic exchange strategy, by manipulation of pH and ionic strength, whereas nickel-crosslinked microspheres were applied in an affinity strategy, mirroring a standard immobilized metal affinity chromatography. Both formulations presented small diameters, with appreciable crosslinker content, but calcium-crosslinked microspheres were far smoother. The most promising results were obtained for the ionic strategy, wherein calcium-crosslinked GG microspheres were able to completely bind 0.1% (v/v) DM solubilized STEAP1 in lysate samples (~7 mg/mL). The target protein was eluted in a complexed state at pH 11 with 500 mM NaCl in 10 mM Tris buffer, in a single step with minimal losses. Coupling the batch clarified sample with a co-immunoprecipitation polishing step yields a sample of monomeric STEAP1 with a high degree of purity. For the first time, we demonstrate the potential of a gellan batch method to function as a clarification and primary capture method towards STEAP1, a membrane protein, simplifying and reducing the costs of standard purification workflows. Simple Summary: In wildlife management, it is often necessary to capture live animals for resettlement or to collect biological samples. The method of trapping deer significantly affects the values of the vital parameters determining their welfare. This study provides hematological and serum biochemical intervals for physically captured free-ranging roe deer. The RBC, HCT, and Hb values were significantly lower in males than in females. These results may be helpful to create reference ranges for roe deer. This study presents the hematological and serum biochemical values of physically captured roe deer (Capreolus capreolus). The study material was blood sampled from roe deer captured with the use of a specialist trap mesh and no anesthesia. Blood samples were collected from 122 roe deer from January to April in 2016, 2017, and 2018 in the Lublin region of Poland. The hematological and biochemical variables were determined with results showing statistically significant differences between the mean values of RBC, HCT, and HB according to sex. Pluripotency is a crucial feature of pluripotent stem cells, which are regulated by the core pluripotency network consisting of key transcription factors and signaling molecules. However, relatively less is known about the molecular mechanisms that modify the core pluripotency network. Here we used the CAPTURE (CRISPR Affinity Purification in situ of Regulatory Elements) to unbiasedly isolate proteins assembled on the Nanog promoter in mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs), and then tested their functional relevance to the maintenance of mESCs and reprogramming of somatic cells. Gene ontology analysis revealed that the identified proteins, including many RNA-binding proteins (RBPs), are enriched in RNA-related functions and gene expression. ChIP-qPCR experiments confirmed that BCLAF1, FUBP1, MSH6, PARK7, PSIP1, and THRAP3 occupy the Nanog promoter region in mESCs. Knockdown experiments of these factors show that they play varying roles in self-renewal, pluripotency gene expression, and differentiation of mESCs as well as in the reprogramming of somatic cells. Our results show the utility of unbiased identification of chromatin-associated proteins on a pluripotency gene in mESCs and reveal the functional relevance of RBPs in ESC differentiation and somatic cell reprogramming. Simple Summary: Satellite collars and other tracking (telemetry) devices fitted on wild animals can provide insights into species' habitat requirements, movements, space and resource use, thermoregulation, life history, and demographics. Such information is particularly important for the conservation and management of elusive and threatened species like the snow leopard (Panthera uncia). Deploying tracking devices, however, exposes targeted and non-targeted animals to non-trivial risks—for example, trapping-induced injuries or death, adverse reactions to immobilizing drugs, and physiological and behavioral impacts from inappropriately-sized collars. The implicit ethical considerations and tradeoffs are not always obvious, and are often underappreciated by researchers and managers responsible for conducting or approving proposed telemetry projects. Here, we aim to (1) help researchers, managers, and permitting agencies better understand if and when the risks inherent in telemetry studies are ethically justifiable; and (2) help researchers develop efficient and ethical procedures for planning telemetry studies and associated capturing and handling protocols for snow leopards. Telemetry studies that are undertaken with clearly-articulated purpose, well-vetted and comprehensive protocols, and a sustained commitment of resources can play a vital role in conservation. Animal-borne tracking devices have generated a wealth of new knowledge, allowing us to better understand, manage and conserve species. Fitting such tracking devices requires that animals are captured and often chemically immobilized. Such procedures cause stress and involve the risk of injuries and loss of life even in healthy individuals. For telemetry studies to be justifiable, it is vital that capture operations are planned and executed in an efficient and ethical way. Project objectives must be clearly articulated to address well-defined knowledge gaps, and studies designed to maximize the probability of achieving those goals. We provide guidelines for how to plan, design, and implement telemetry studies with a special emphasis on snow leopards that are typically captured using foot snares. In order to identify factors involved in transcription of human snRNA genes and 3′ end processing of the transcripts, we have carried out CRISPR affinity purification in situ of regulatory elements (CAPTURE), which is deadCas9-mediated pull-down, of the tandemly repeated U2 snRNA genes in human cells. CAPTURE enriched many factors expected to be associated with these human snRNA genes including RNA polymerase II (pol II), Cyclin-Dependent Kinase 7 (CDK7), Negative Elongation Factor (NELF), Suppressor of Ty 5 (SPT5), Mediator 23 (MED23) and several subunits of the Integrator Complex. Suppressor of Ty 6 (SPT6); Cyclin K, the partner of Cyclin-Dependent Kinase 12 (CDK12) and Cyclin-Dependent Kinase 13 (CDK13); and SWI/SNF chromatin remodelling complex-associated SWI/SNF-related, Matrix-associated, Regulator of Chromatin (SMRC) factors were also enriched. Several polyadenylation factors, including Cleavage and Polyadenylation Specificity Factor 1 (CPSF1), Cleavage Stimulation Factors 1 and 2 (CSTF1,and CSTF2) were enriched by U2 gene CAPTURE. We have already shown by chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) that CSTF2—and Pcf11 and Ssu72, which are also polyadenylation factors—are associated with the human U1 and U2 genes. ChIP-seq and ChIP-qPCR confirm the association of SPT6, Cyclin K, and CDK12 with the U2 genes. In addition, knockdown of SPT6 causes loss of subunit 3 of the Integrator Complex (INTS3) from the U2 genes, indicating a functional role in snRNA gene expression. The two-center basis generator method is used to obtain cross sections for excitation, capture, and ionization in Li 3 + , C 3 + , and O 3 + collisions with ground-state hydrogen at projectile energies from 1 to 100 keV/u. The interaction of the C 3 + and O 3 + projectiles with the active electron is represented by a model potential. Comparisons of cross sections with previously reported data show an overall good agreement, while discrepancies in capture for C 3 + collisions at low energies are noted. The present results show that excitation and ionization are similar across the three collision systems, which indicates that these cross sections are mostly dependent on the net charge of the projectile only. Featured Application: The research results of this paper are mainly applied to the landing assistance of the shipborne helicopter, including the capture and traction of the shipborne helicopter after landing. The shipborne helicopter is an essential maritime combat force of the modern navy. However, as the most advanced shipborne helicopter landing assistance system, the ASIST still suffers from the significant disadvantage of the uncontrollable driving speed of the claw. This paper aims to propose an implementation scheme of the EASIST transmission system by selecting an asynchronous motor as the direct power source to solve the problem. On this basis, the speed controller is built by combining the vector control algorithm with an ANFIS control algorithm. In addition, the capture and traction characteristics of EASIST are analyzed, and the capture track of the claw and the maximum load in the traction process are obtained. Finally, the dynamics model of the transmission system is established by power bond graph theory, and the system simulation test is carried out. Simulation results show that the proposed EASIST reduces the capture time by about 60% and dramatically reduces the capture speed. And when towing the shipborne helicopter, EASIST can keep a good speed-tracking effect under the action of wildly varying load force. The research results of this paper are of great significance to broaden the application scope of ASIST and improve the traction efficiency, which plays a vital role in enhancing the combat effectiveness of shipborne helicopters. Capturing space targets by space robots is significant for on-orbit service and is a challenging research topic nowadays. This paper focuses on the dynamics and control of capturing a non-cooperative space target by a space robot with a long flexible manipulator. Firstly, the dynamic equation of the flexible space robot is given. The Hertz contact model is used to describe the contact force between the robot and the target. Secondly, an active compliance controller is designed to reduce the capture impact on the robot. Finally, the capture impact on the whole system is analyzed in detail in four scenarios: the combination of two kinds of movement forms and two kinds of relative positions of the robot and the target before capturing. Simulation results indicate that the capturing operation may cause complicated dynamic behaviors such as the vibration of elastic links and the continuous collision of the target. Moreover, the results show that the control method effectively offsets the capture impact on the space robot system. Human noroviruses (HuNoVs) and the hepatitis A virus (HAV) are the main viral causes of foodborne illness worldwide. These viruses are frequently transmitted via fresh and frozen berries, such as strawberries and raspberries. ISO 15216:1 (2017), currently the preferred method for their detection, involves several steps and is time-consuming. Apolipoprotein H (ApoH) has been shown to have a strong affinity for several microorganisms, including HuNoVs. In this article, we report an ApoH-based method of capturing the HAV and HuNoVs adherent to berries and concentrating them for assay. The limit of detection of both viruses suspended in a buffer was low. On strawberries, the HAV was detected down to 104 genome copies/25 g in 100% of cases and down to 103 genome copies/25 g on raspberries in 50% of cases. This sensitivity was not significantly different from that of the ISO method 15216:1 (2017). HuNoV GII.4 was more difficult to detect using the ApoH method. The ApoH CaptoVIR kit does, nevertheless, appear to be usable in the near future as a single-test, multiple-detection method for viruses on fresh and frozen berries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A lab-scale bubble-column scrubber is used to capture CO gas and produce ammonia bicarbonate (ABC) using aqueous ammonia as an absorbent under a constant pH and temperature. The CO concentration is adjusted by mixing N and CO in the range of 15-60 vol % at 55 C. The process variables are the pH of the solution, temperature, gas-flow rate and the concentration of gas. The effects of the process variables on the removal efficiency (E), absorption rate (RA) and overall mass-transfer coefficient (KGa) were explored. A multiple-tube mass balance model was used to determine RA and KGa, in which RA and KGa were in the range of .14 ⨰ 104-1.09 ⨰ 10-3 mol/(s±L) and 0.0136-0.5669 1/s, respectively. Results found that, RA showed an obvious increase with the increase in pH, inlet gas concentration and gas temperature, while KGa decreased with an increase in inlet gas concentration. Using linear regression, an empirical expression for KGa/E was obtained. On the other hand, ammonia bicarbonate crystals could be produced at a pH of 9.5 when the gas concentration was higher than 30% and g (=Fg/FA, the gas-liquid molar flow rate ratio) 1.5. Substantial improvements have been made to cell culturing processes (e.g., higher product titer) in recent years by raising cell densities and optimizing cultivation time. However, this has been accompanied by an increase in product-related impurities and therefore greater challenges in subsequent clarification and capture operations. Considering the paradigm shift towards the design of continuously operating dedicated plants at smaller scales-with or without disposable technology-for treating smaller patient populations due to new indications or personalized medicine approaches, the rising need for new, innovative strategies for both clarification and capture technology becomes evident. Aqueous two-phase extraction (ATPE) is now considered to be a feasible unit operation, e.g., for the capture of monoclonal antibodies or recombinant proteins. However, most of the published work so far investigates the applicability of ATPE in antibody-manufacturing processes at the lab-scale and for the most part, only during the capture step. This work shows the integration of ATPE as a combined harvest and capture step into a downstream process. Additionally, a model is applied that allows early prediction of settler dimensions with high prediction accuracy. Finally, a reliable process development concept, which guides through the necessary steps, starting from the definition of the separation task to the final stages of integration and scale-up, is presented. Investigation of fertility control techniques to reduce reproductive rates in wildlife populations has been the source of much research. Techniques targeting wildlife fertility have been diverse. Most research into fertility control methods has focused upon efficacy, with few studies rigorously assessing animal welfare beyond opportunistic anecdote. However, fertility control techniques represent several very different mechanisms of action (modalities), each with their own different animal welfare risks. We provide a review of the mechanisms of action for fertility control methods, and consider the role of manipulation of reproductive hormones ("endocrine suppression") for the long-term ability of animals to behave normally. We consider the potential welfare costs of animal manipulation techniques that are required to administer fertility treatments, including capture, restraint, surgery and drug delivery, and the requirement for repeated administration within the lifetime of an animal. We challenge the assumption that fertility control modalities generate similar and desirable animal welfare outcomes, and we argue that knowledge of reproductive physiology and behaviour should be more adeptly applied to wild animal management decisions. We encourage wildlife managers to carefully assess long-term behavioural risks, associated animal handling techniques, and the importance of positive welfare states when selecting fertility control methods as a means of population control. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been widely used to capture CO2 in recent years. Understanding CO2 mechanisms by DESs is crucial to the design of efficient DESs for carbon capture. In this work, we studied the CO2 absorption mechanism by DESs based on ethylene glycol (EG) and protic ionic liquid ([MEAH][Im]), formed by monoethanolamine (MEA) with imidazole (Im). The interactions between CO2 and DESs [MEAH][Im]-EG (1:3) are investigated thoroughly by applying 1H and 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), 2-D NMR, and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) techniques. Surprisingly, the results indicate that CO2 not only binds to the amine group of MEA but also reacts with the deprotonated EG, yielding carbamate and carbonate species, respectively. The reaction mechanism between CO2 and DESs is proposed, which includes two pathways. One pathway is the deprotonation of the [MEAH]+ cation by the [Im]− anion, resulting in the formation of neutral molecule MEA, which then reacts with CO2 to form a carbamate species. In the other pathway, EG is deprotonated by the [Im]−, and then the deprotonated EG, HO-CH2-CH2-O−, binds with CO2 to form a carbonate species. The absorption mechanism found by this work is different from those of other DESs formed by protic ionic liquids and EG, and we believe the new insights into the interactions between CO2 and DESs will be beneficial to the design and applications of DESs for carbon capture in the future. Cu-Mg-Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with amine modification were prepared by an organic combination of an anionic surfactant-mediated method and an ultrasonic spalling method using N-aminoethyl-γ-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane as a grafting agent. The materials were characterized by elemental analysis, XRD, SEM, FTIR, TGA, and XPS. The effects of the Cu2+ content on the surface morphology and the CO2 adsorption of Cu-Mg-Al LDHs were investigated, and the kinetics of the CO2 adsorption and the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 were further analyzed. The results indicated that the amine-modified method and appropriate Cu2+ contents can improve the surface morphology, the increase amine loading and the free-amino functional groups of the materials, which were beneficial to CO2 capture and adsorption. The CO2 adsorption capacity of Cu-Mg-Al N was 1.82 mmol·g−1 at 30 °C and a 0.1 MPa pure CO2 atmosphere. The kinetic model confirmed that CO2 adsorption was governed by both the physical and chemical adsorption, which could be enhanced with the increase of the Cu2+ content. The chemical adsorption was suppressed, when the Cu2+ content was too high. Cu-Mg-Al N can photocatalytically reduce CO2 to methanol with Cu2+ as an active site, which can significantly improve the CO2 adsorption and photocatalytic conversion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recently, deep eutectic solvents (DESs), a new type of solvent, have been studied widely for CO2 capture. In this work, the anion-functionalized deep eutectic solvents composed of phenol-based ionic liquids (ILs) and hydrogen bond donors (HBDs) ethylene glycol (EG) or 4-methylimidazole (4CH3-Im) were synthesized for CO2 capture. The phenol-based ILs used in this study were prepared from bio-derived phenols carvacrol (Car) and thymol (Thy). The CO2 absorption capacities of the DESs were determined. The absorption mechanisms by the DESs were also studied using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and mass spectroscopy. Interestingly, the results indicated that CO2 reacted with both the phenolic anions and EG, generating the phenol-based carbonates and the EG-based carbonates, when CO2 interacted with the DESs formed by the ILs and EG. However, CO2 only reacted with the phenolic anions when the DESs formed by the ILs and 4CH3-Im. The results indicated that the HBDs impacted greatly on the CO2 absorption mechanism, suggesting the mechanism can be tuned by changing the HBDs, and the different reaction pathways may be due to the steric hinderance differences of the functional groups of the HBDs. Background: It is well known that more than 90% of cancer deaths are due to metastases. However, the entire tumorigenesis process is not fully understood, and it is evident that cells spreading from the primary tumor play a key role in initiating the metastatic process. Tumor proliferation and invasion also elevate the concentration of regular and irregular metabolites in the serum, which may alter the normal function of the entire human homeostasis and possibly causes cancer metabolism syndrome, also referred to as cachexia. Methods: We report on the modification of commercially available hemodialysis membranes to selectively capture circulating tumor cells from the blood stream by means of immobilized human anti-EpCAM antibodies on the inner surface of the fibers. All critical steps are described that required in situ addition of the immuno-affinity feature to hemodialyzer cartridges in order to capture EpCAM positive circulating tumor cells, which represents ~80% of cancer cell types. Results: The cell capture efficiency of the suggested technology was demonstrated by spiking HCT116 cancer cells both into buffer solution and whole blood and run through on the modified cartridge. Flow cytometry was used to quantitatively evaluate the cell clearance performance of the approach. Conclusions: The suggested modification has no significant effect on the porous structure of the hemodialysis membranes; it keeps its cytokine removal capability, addressing cachexia simultaneously with CTC removal. Up to now, many kinds of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were investigated for the capture of acidic gases from flue gases. In this review, non-functionalized and functionalized DESs, including binary and ternary DESs, for SO2, CO2 and NO capture, are summarized based on the mechanism of absorption, physical interaction or chemical reaction. New strategies for improving the absorption capacity are introduced in this review. For example, a third component can be introduced to form a ternary DES to suppress the increase in viscosity and improve the CO2 absorption capacity. DESs, synthesized with halogen salt hydrogen bond acceptors (HBAs) and functionalized hydrogen bond donors (HBDs), can be used for the absorption of SO2 and NO with high absorption capacities and low viscosities after absorption, due to physicochemical interaction between gases and DESs. To assess whether and how socioeconomic factors might be influencing global freshwater finfisheries, inland fishery data reported to the FAO between 1950 and 2015 were grouped by capture and culture, country human development index, plotted, and compared. We found that while capture inland finfishes have greatly increased on a global scale, this trend is being driven almost entirely by poorly developed (Tier-3) countries which also identify only 17% of their catch. In contrast, capture finfisheries have recently plateaued in moderately-developed (Tier-2) countries which are also identifying 16% of their catch but are dominated by a single country, China. In contrast, reported capture finfisheries are declining in well-developed (Tier-1) countries which identify nearly all (78%) of their fishes. Simultaneously, aquacultural activity has been increasing rapidly in both Tier-2 and Tier-3 countries, but only slowly in Tier-1 countries; remarkably, nearly all cultured species are being identified by all tier groups. These distinctly different trends suggest that socioeconomic factors influence how countries report and conduct capture finfisheries. Reported rapid increases in capture fisheries are worrisome in poorly developed countries because they cannot be explained and thus these fisheries cannot be managed meaningfully even though they depend on them for food. Our descriptive, proof-of-concept study suggests that socioeconomic factors should be considered in future, more sophisticated efforts to understand global freshwater fisheries which might include catch reconstruction. This paper introduced the use of two new adsorbents, Akrosorb soda-lime and Bentonite clay, for refinery flare flue gas capture and storage. This study also developed a novel pilot plant model with 409.7149 kg/h capacity refinery flare emission capture with a novel adsorption column configuration using Akrosorb soda-lime and Bentonite clay adsorbents. The flare flue gas adsorption unit was designed, fabricated, test run, and commissioned. The adsorption column temperature is 28 ± 10 °C and has a pressure of 131.7 kPa. The novel plant RSM optimization result shows that 93.24% of CO2 and 62.18% of CO were absorbed, while 86.14% of NOx and 55.87% of HC were absorbed. The established optimum conditions of CO2, NOx, HC, and CO removal efficiency are 22 °C, 2 atm, and 60 min. The variation in flare gas emission could impact the removal efficiency of the plant. The results show the maximum adsorption ability or capacity of 314.30 mg/g, and 68.90 mg/g was reached at 60 min for Akrosorb soda-lime and molded Bentonite adsorbents. Therefore, the developed novel technology for CO2 and other GHG capture is technically feasible and friendly. To address the issue of global warming and climate change issues, recent research efforts have highlighted opportunities for capturing and electrochemically converting carbon dioxide (CO2). Despite metal doped polymers receiving widespread attention in this respect, the structures hitherto reported lack in ease of synthesis with scale up feasibility. In this study, a series of mesoporous metal-doped polymers (MRFs) with tunable metal functionality and hierarchical porosity were successfully synthesized using a one-step copolymerization of resorcinol and formaldehyde with Polyethyleneimine (PEI) under solvothermal conditions. The effect of PEI and metal doping concentrations were observed on physical properties and adsorption results. The results confirmed the role of PEI on the mesoporosity of the polymer networks and high surface area in addition to enhanced CO2 capture capacity. The resulting Cobalt doped material shows excellent thermal stability and promising CO2 capture performance, with equilibrium adsorption of 2.3 mmol CO2/g at 0 °C and 1 bar for at a surface area 675.62 m2/g. Glycans are major constituents of extracellular vesicles (EVs). Alterations in the glycosylation pathway are a common feature of cancer cells, which gives rise to de novo or increased synthesis of particular glycans. Therefore, glycans and glycoproteins have been widely used in the clinic as both stratification and prognosis cancer biomarkers. Interestingly, several of the known tumor-associated glycans have already been identified in cancer EVs, highlighting EV glycosylation as a potential source of circulating cancer biomarkers. These particles are crucial vehicles of cell–cell communication, being able to transfer molecular information and to modulate the recipient cell behavior. The presence of particular glycoconjugates has been described to be important for EV protein sorting, uptake and organ-tropism. Furthermore, specific EV glycans or glycoproteins have been described to be able to distinguish tumor EVs from benign EVs. In this review, the application of EV glycosylation in the development of novel EV detection and capture methodologies is discussed. In this work, we studied the CO2 absorption mechanism by nonaqueous solvent comprising hindered amine 2-[(1,1-dimethylethyl)amino]ethanol (TBAE) and ethylene glycol (EG). The NMR and FTIR results indicated that CO2 reacted with an -OH group of EG rather than the -OH of TBAE by producing hydroxyethyl carbonate species. A possible reaction pathway was suggested, which involves two steps. In the first step, the acid–base reaction between TBAE and EG generated the anion HO-CH2-CH2-O-; in the second step, the O− of HO-CH2-CH2-O− attacked the C atom of CO2, forming carbonate species. Simple Summary: Information on population characteristics of Paraechinusis is valuable for ensuring long term survival of populations, however, studies are currently lacking. Here we investigate the population dynamics of Ethiopian hedgehogs based on a capture study in Qatar by fitting several statistical models. Over the 19 months of the study, we estimate a mean population of 60 hedgehogs, giving a density of 7 hedgehogs per km2 in our 8.5 km2 search area. The monthly abundance of hedgehogs decreased over the study and although survival was constant over the study period, with a mean monthly rate of 75%, there was a decline in the number of new entrants over time. We also studied these parameters over one year, excluding winter, and found that monthly estimates of juvenile and subadult survival decreased over time. We surmise that survival of juveniles may be a factor in the decrease in abundance and there may be implications for the persistence of this population in the future, with human influenced resources playing an important role. We caught between 91.3% and 100% of the estimated population at this site, indicating that our capture methodology was efficient. We conclude that the methodology used here is transferrable to other hedgehog species. Simple Summary: Our long-term goal is to develop less stressful ways of gathering and handling wild horses for necessary capture, either for permanent removal from the range or for repeated application of fertility control treatments. This report describes preliminary evaluation of the concept of leading wild horses into a corral using light aircraft as a less stressful, less expensive, and safer alternative to the current most common practice of driving horses with helicopters into traps. In a model herd of semi-feral managed ponies, an entire herd was successfully led by a remotely operated quadcopter drone into simulated capture enclosures. Feral horses, wherever managed, typically require population control involving capture for permanent removal or repeatedly for fertility control treatments. The most common method for capturing feral horses is helicopter chasing into traps. With this fear-based strategy, it is difficult to safely capture entire groups. Recapture becomes increasingly difficult, with greater safety risks for pilots and ground staff. As preliminary proof of the concept of capturing free-roaming horses by leading into enclosures with light aircraft rather than driving with helicopters, a consumer-grade quadcopter drone was used to lead a herd of 123 semi-feral ponies into simulated traps. The technique was successful on the first attempt as well as for seven of nine additional attempts over a period of 4 weeks, repeatedly to the same as well as to different destinations. The pace of following was primarily a fast walk, with occasional slow trot. Family integrity was maintained. This work demonstrates preliminary proof of the concept of repeated capture of horses by leading with aircraft rather than chasing. If successfully demonstrated in more extensive rangeland conditions, this method may eventually provide a lower-stress, more repeatable option of capturing feral horses, with implications for improved animal and human safety and welfare. We study the placement of gateways in a low-power wide-area sensor network, when the gateways perform interference cancellation and when the model of the residual error of interference cancellation is proportional to the power of the packet being canceled. For the case of two sensor nodes sending packets that collide, by which we mean overlap in time, we deduce a symmetric two-crescent region wherein a gateway can decode both collided packets. For a large network of many sensors and multiple gateways, we propose two greedy algorithms to optimize the locations of the gateways. Simulation results show that the gateway placements by our algorithms achieve lower average contention, which means higher packet delivery ratio in the same conditions, than when gateways are naively placed, for several area distributions of sensors.
