Calcium phosphate (CaP)-based materials are largely explored in orthopedics, to increase osseointegration of the prostheses and specifically in spine surgery, to permit better fusion. To address these aims, nanostructured biogenic apatite coatings are emerging, since they better mimic the characteristics of the host tissue, thus potentially being better candidates compared to their synthetic counterpart. Here, we compare hydroxyapatite (HA) nanostructured coatings, obtained by ionized jet deposition, starting from synthetic and natural sources. The starting materials and the corresponding films are characterized and compared from a compositional and morphological point of view, then their stability is studied after post-treatment annealing. Although all the films are formed by globular aggregates and show morphological features at different scales (from nano to micro), significant differences are found in composition between the synthetic and naturally derived HA in terms of magnesium and sodium content, carbonate substitution and Ca/P ratio, while differences between the coatings obtained by the different natural HA sources are minor. In addition, the shape of the aggregates is also target-dependent. All coatings have a good stability after over 14 days of immersion in medium, with natural apatite coatings showing a better behavior, as no cracking and detachments are observed during immersion. Based on these results, both synthetic and naturally derived apatitic materials appear promising for applications in spine surgery, with coatings from natural sources possessing physiochemical properties more similar to the mineral phase of the human bone tissue. Bioresponsive ceramics, a new concept in ceramic biomaterials, respond to biological molecules or environments, as exemplified by salts composed of calcium ions and phosphate esters (SCPEs). SCPEs have been shown to form apatite in simulated body fluid (SBF) containing alkaline phosphatase (ALP). Thus, surface modification with SCPEs is expected to improve the apatite-forming ability of a material. In this study, we modified the surface of α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) using methyl, butyl, or dodecyl phosphate to form SCPEs and investigated their apatite formation in SBF and SBF containing ALP. Although apatite did not form on the surface of the unmodified α-TCP in SBF, apatite formation was observed following surface modification with methyl or butyl phosphate. When ALP was present in SBF, apatite formation was especially remarkable on α-TCP modified with butyl phosphate. These SCPEs accelerated apatite formation by releasing calcium ions through dissolution and supplying inorganic phosphate ions, with the latter process only occurring in SBF containing ALP. Notably, no apatite formation occurred on α-TCP modified with dodecyl phosphate, likely because of the low solubility of the resulting calcium dodecyl phosphate/calcium phosphate composites. Given that particle and bubble size, as well as their surface properties, are pivotal in froth flotation, surfactants have been extensively employed due to their impact on bubble size and froth stabilization. This study aimed to investigate the influence of surfactants on the performance of apatite flotation in column. Three different categories of surfactants were examined: anionic, amphoteric, and nonionic, specifically Lupromin, Genagen, and Triton X-100, respectively. The critical coalescence concentration (CCC) and surface tension of each surfactant were determined. The impact of these surfactants on reducing bubble size was quantified, and their subsequent effects on apatite flotation in a column were assessed. The most favorable flotation response for Genagen was achieved at CCC and pH 11, resulting in the highest apatite recovery and the smallest bubble size. For Triton X-100, the best condition was attained at ¼ CCC and pH 11. However, overall, Lupromin was the surfactant that yielded the best flotation results (at ¼ CCC and pH 11). The Tepsi ultrabasic body is located in the northeastern Fennoscandian Shield close to the junction of the Serpentinite Belt–Tulppio Belt (SB–TB) with suites of the Lapland–Belomorian Belt (LBB) of Paleoproterozoic age. The body is a deformed laccolith that has tectonic contacts with Archean rocks. Its primary textures and magmatic parageneses are widely preserved. Fine-grained olivine varies continuously from Fo90.5 to Fo65.4. The whole-rock variations in MgO, Fe2O3, SiO2, and other geochemical data are also indicative of a significant extent of differentiation. Compositional variations were examined in the grains of calcic and Mg-Fe amphiboles, clinochlore, micas, plagioclase, members of the chromite–magnetite series, ilmenite, apatite, pentlandite, and a number of other minor mineral species. Low-sulfide disseminated Ni-Cu-Co mineralization occurred sporadically, with the presence of species enriched in As or Bi, submicrometric grains rich in Pt and Ir, or diffuse zones in pentlandite enriched in (Pd + Bi). We recognize two series: the pentlandite series (up to 2.5–3 wt.% Co) and the cobaltpentlandite series (~1 to ~8 apfu Co). The latter accompanied serpentinization. The two series display differences in their substitutions: Ni ↔ Fe and Co → (Ni + Fe), respectively. Relative enrichments in H2O, Cl, and F, observed in grains of apatite (plus high contents of Cl in hibbingite or parahibbingite), point to the abundance of volatiles accumulated during differentiation. We provide the first documentation of scheelite grains in ultrabasic rocks, found in evolved olivine-rich rocks (Fo77–72). We also describe unusual occurrences of hypermagnesian clinopyroxene associated with tremolite and serpentine. Abundant clusters of crystallites of diopside display a microspinifex texture. They likely predated serpentinization and formed owning to rapid crystallization in a differentiated portion of a supercooled oxidized melt or, less likely, fluid, after bulk crystallization of the olivine. We infer that the laccolithic Tepsi body crystallized rapidly, in a shallow setting, and could thus not form megacycles in a layered series or produce a well-organized structure. SE Anatolia is witnessing the final stage of the Wilson Cycle, where a continental collision between the Tauride–Anatolide block and Arabian platform occurred, and a 1.5 km Eastern Tauride mountain chain formed. We present new low-temperature thermochronology (LTT) ages, including eight apatite fission track (AFT) and seven apatite and zircon U-Th-Sm/He (AHe, ZHe) ages, for the metamorphic rocks from the Nappe Zone of the Southeast Anatolian Orogenic Belt. The ZHe ages vary from 51.2 ± 0.7 Ma to 30.4 ± 0.6 Ma, the AFT ages range from 33.1 ± 1.6 Ma to 18.1 ± 0.9 Ma, and the AHe ages range from 23.6 ± 2.5 Ma to 6 ± 1.9 Ma. The LTT data show a continuous slow uplift of the region. However, the thermal modeling results suggest an Eocene and middle–late Miocene fast uplift of the region. Similar to our results, the LTT studies along the SAOB show that the vertical movements initiated during the Eocene period have continued in a steady-state regime to recent times. The Eocene epoch is identified by arc–back-arc setting in the region, whereas the Miocene epoch is marked by the continental collision. Within this tectonic framework, vertical movements on the overriding plate are controlled by both extensional and compressional tectonics. Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for humans and animals, and an excess of or deficiency in Se is harmful to health. Research on the selenium enrichment zone began in the late 1970s in Shuang'an, Ziyang, southern Shaanxi Province. Naore village is only one selenosis area in Shuang'an, Ziyang, China. Different scholars have conducted systematic studies on the occurrence of selenium, its organic geochemistry and biomarkers, and its content and enrichment patterns in this area. This study applied the TIMA (TESCAN integrated mineral analyzer) for the first time to conduct detailed mineralogical work. The minerals included quartz, carbonate minerals (calcite and dolomite), feldspar (plagioclase, albite, and orthoclase), biotite and muscovite, clay minerals (chlorite and kaolinite), hematite, pyrite, and accessory minerals (almandine, olivine, zircon, and apatite) in Naore village, Ziyang, Shaanxi Province. The ATi index (100 × apatite/(apatite + tourmaline)) is used to determine the source of heavy minerals and the degree of heavy minerals' weathering. The content POS (100 × (pyroxene + olivine + spinel)/transparent heavy mineral) of olivine, pyroxene, and spinel in heavy minerals can reflect the contribution of basic and ultrabasic rocks in the source area. The ATi and POS indexes for the heavy minerals in the research area were 91.83~99.96 and 0.01~18.75, respectively, reflecting the abundance of volcanic rock material in their source. In addition, the migration, transformation, bioavailability, and toxicity of selenium in the environment are closely related to its species. The species of selenium in various selenium-rich areas (Naore, Wamiao, and Guanquan) mainly include unusable residues and organic forms, followed by humic-acid-bound selenium. The proportions of water-soluble, exchangeable, and carbonate-bound selenium are relatively small, and the proportion of Fe-Mn oxide-bound selenium is the lowest. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reviews the phosphate phases in meteorites and those measured by landed spacecraft, what they reveal about past igneous and aqueous conditions on Mars, and important implications for potential prebiotic chemistry, past habitability, and potential biosignatures that could be detected in samples returned from Mars. A review of the 378 martian meteorites as of 2023 indicate that of the two most common phosphate minerals in Mars meteorites, merrillite and apatites, the apatite composition is largely F- and Cl-rich, with shergottites containing more OH. The phosphate concentrations examined across multiple missions show a relatively narrow range of phosphate, with higher concentrations observed in the Mount Sharp Group in Gale crater and Wishstone at Gusev crater and lower concentrations observed at Jezero crater floor and Jezero fan. Possible secondary phosphates detected on Mars, including Fe phosphates at Jezero crater and Gusev crater and Ca- and Al-bearing secondary phosphates, temperatures of formation of secondary phases and their dissolution rates and solubilities are reviewed and summarized. Despite this wealth of information about phosphates on Mars, due to their fine scale and relatively low concentrations, Mars Sample Return is needed to better understand phosphate and its implications for the igneous, aqueous, and astrobiological history of Mars. The early Triassic (~250 Ma) hornblende gabbro from the Tengxian area of Yunkai Massif, South China, contains a mineral assemblage of clinopyroxene, hornblende, biotite, plagioclase, K-feldspar and quartz and accessory apatite, and zircon and ilmenite. Based on mineral association and crystallization sequence, two generations of the mineral assemblage have been identified: clinopyroxene + plagioclase + apatite (zircon) in Generation I and ilmenite + hornblende + biotite + K-feldspar + quartz in Generation II. The high crystallization temperature (T = 999–1069 °C) of clinopyroxene and its coexistence with labradorite (An = 52–58) indicate that Generation I crystallized in a basaltic magma, while the hornblende's relatively low crystallization temperature (T = 780–820 °C) and coexistence with K-feldspar and quartz suggest that Generation II formed in an evolved alkaline melt. The mineralogical records are likely attributed to pulsed intrusion of the late-stage evolved magma into a crystal mush, like in Generation I. The bulk-rock geochemical data include a sub-alkaline affinity, arc-type trace element features, and highly enriched Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotopic compositions, consistent with the isotopic records from the accessory minerals, e.g., the very high δ18O values in both zircon and apatite and significantly negative εHf(t) in zircon. The combined mineral and bulk-rock geochemical data suggest that the primary magma for the Tengxian hornblende gabbro was derived from a mantle wedge that had been metasomatized by voluminous subducted terrigenous sediment-derived melts in response to subduction of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean. Low P-containing wastewaters (LPWs) exhibit huge P recovery potential, considering their larger volume. P recovery via CaP crystallization using apatite as seed is documented as being potentially well suited for LPWs. However, its responsible mechanisms remain a subject for debate. Taking hydroxyapatite (HAP) as the seed of LPWs, this paper conducted HAP adsorption/dissolution experiments, titration experiments, and P recovery experiments to distinguish the primary responsible mechanism. Results showed that it was HAP dissolution, not P adsorption, that occurred when the initial P concentration was no higher than 5 mg/L, ruling out adsorption mechanism of P recovery from LPWs using HAP as the seed. Significant OH− consumption and rapid P recovery occurred simultaneously within the first 60 s in titration experiments, suggesting CaP crystallization should be responsible for P recovery. Moreover, the continuous increase in P recovery efficiency with seed dosages observed in P recovery experiments seemed to follow well the mechanism of pre-nucleation ion clusters (PNCs) aggregation. During PNCs aggregation, P aggregates with Ca2+ quickly, generating CaP PNCs; then, CaP PNCs aggregate with seed particles, followed by CaP PNCs fusion, and ultimately transform into fines attached to the seed surface. PNCs' aggregation mechanism was further supported by a comparison of seed SEM images before and after P recovery, since denser and smaller rod-shaped fines were observed on the seed surface after P recovery. This study suggests that PNCs' aggregation is the dominant mechanism responsible for the recovery of P from LPWs via CaP crystallization using HAP as the seed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Iron concentration tailings contain many valuable minerals, including apatite, which is not currently being recovered despite its use to make fertilizers and chemicals. This article proposes a flotation circuit to recover apatite from tailings generated by mining in Chile, based on laboratory tests and using the "Split Factor" method. The iron tailings were characterized by granulometry, chemical and mineralogical analyses, zeta potential, and contact angle. The effect of the collector, frother, and dispersant dose, along with the number of flotation stages, on both the grade and recovery of P2O5 were studied. The results indicate that it is possible to produce concentrates with a P2O5 grade of 29.1% and 89.6% recovery in a flotation circuit that includes the rougher–scavenger–cleaner stages. To obtain these results, it is only necessary to condition the iron tailings with 400 gt−1 of Atrac-2600, 400 gt−1 of sodium silicate, 10 min of conditioning time, pH adjustment to 10, and a time for the rougher, cleaner, and scavenger stages set at 10, 7.6, and 6.8 min, respectively. The Helanshan Mountain tectonic belt (HTB) is an intraplate deformation belt along the northwestern border of the Ordos Block in the North China Craton. When and why this intracontinental tectonic belt formed, its subsequent uplift and erosion, and the relationships between ranges and adjacent basins remain unclear. To better assess the connections between the temporal and structural activity in HTB, apatite fission-track (AFT) and zircon fission-track (ZFT) analyses were conducted in this study. The lack of adequate FT data from the HTB is a source of contention and dispute. This paper collected samples for AFT and ZFT techniques from the central and southern HTB, trying to improve the research. The ZFT and AFT ages could be divided into the following 7 groups: 279 Ma, 222–213 Ma, 193–169 Ma, 151–147 Ma, 130–109 Ma, 92–77 Ma, and 65–50 Ma. The inverse modeling results of AFT indicate 4 fast cooling episodes of 170–120 Ma, 120–95 Ma, 66–60 Ma, and ~10–8 Ma to the present. Combining the results of FT analysis with radial plot and inverse modeling of AFT, the following eight age groups are believed to reveal the distinct tectonic activities in HTB: the first age group of 279 Ma mainly represented the back-arc extension of the southern HTB; the age group of 222–213 Ma was bounded with NNE-SSE trending contraction between the South China block and North China Craton; the event of 193–169 Ma responded to the post-orogenic collapse followed after the second event; the 151–147 Ma group was interpreted as the eastward extrusion induced by the subduction between Qiangtang and Lhasa blocks; the Early Cretaceous (130–109 Ma) group was not only affected by the rollback of the Pacific Plate, but also denoted the collapse of the thickened lithosphere formed in the Late Jurassic; the Late Cretaceous (92–77 Ma) group was attributed to long-distance impact from the subduction of the Pacific Plate beneath the Eurasian Plate; the event during 65–50 Ma was a correspondence to far-field effect of the onset collision between the Eurasian and Indian Plates; and from 10–8 Ma to the present, the progressive collision of the Indian and Eurasian Plates have a significant impact on the HTB and the northeastern Tibetan Plateau. Titanium with apatite-forming ability as well as antibacterial activity is useful as a component of antibacterial dental implants. When Ti was subjected to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), copper acetate (Cu(OAc)2), and heat (H2O2-Cu(OAc)2-heat) treatments, a network structure of anatase and rutile titanium dioxide (TiO2) and fine copper oxide (CuO) particles was formed on the Ti surface. The resulting samples accumulated a dense and uniform apatite layer on the surface when incubated in simulated body fluid and showed enhanced antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus under visible-light irradiation. Electron spin resonance spectra of H2O2-Cu(OAc)2-heat-treated samples showed that hydroxyl radicals (·OH) were generated from the samples, and the concentration of ·OH increased with increasing Cu concentration of the Cu(OAc)2 solution. The enhanced antibacterial activity of these samples under visible-light irradiation may be attributable to the generation of ·OH from samples. These results suggest that Ti implants obtained using H2O2-Cu(OAc)2-heat treatments and subjected to regular or on-demand visible-light irradiation may provide a decreased risk of peri-implantitis. In recent years, polyelectrolytes have been successfully used as an alternative to non-collagenous proteins to promote interfibrillar biomineralization, to reproduce the spatial intercalation of mineral phases among collagen fibrils, and to design bioinspired scaffolds for hard tissue regeneration. Herein, hybrid nanofibers were fabricated via electrospinning, by using a mixture of Poly ɛ-caprolactone (PCL) and cationic cellulose derivatives, i.e., cellulose-bearing imidazolium tosylate (CIMD). The obtained fibers were self-assembled with Sodium Alginate (SA) by polyelectrolyte interactions with CIMD onto the fiber surface and, then, treated with simulated body fluid (SBF) to promote the precipitation of calcium phosphate (CaP) deposits. FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of SA and CaP, while SEM equipped with EDX analysis mapped the calcium phosphate constituent elements, estimating an average Ca/P ratio of about 1.33—falling in the range of biological apatites. Moreover, in vitro studies have confirmed the good response of mesenchymal cells (hMSCs) on biomineralized samples, since day 3, with a significant improvement in the presence of SA, due to the interaction of SA with CaP deposits. More interestingly, after a decay of metabolic activity on day 7, a relevant increase in cell proliferation can be recognized, in agreement with the beginning of the differentiation phase, confirmed by ALP results. Antibacterial tests performed by using different bacteria populations confirmed that nanofibers with an SA-CIMD complex show an optimal inhibitory response against S. mutans, S. aureus, and E. coli, with no significant decay due to the effect of CaP, in comparison with non-biomineralized controls. All these data suggest a promising use of these biomineralized fibers as bioinspired membranes with efficient antimicrobial and osteoconductive cues suitable to support bone healing/regeneration. Apatite, as a common accessory mineral found in magmatic–hydrothermal deposits, effectively yields geochemical insights that facilitate our understanding of the mineralization process. In this research, multiple generations of magmatic and hydrothermal apatite were observed in the Hongshan porphyry–skarn Cu–Mo deposit in the Yidun Terrane in SW China. The geochemical compositions of the apatite were studied using in situ laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and an electron probe microanalysis to understand the magmatic–hydrothermal processes leading to ore formation. The apatite (Ap1a) occurs as subhedral to euhedral inclusions hosted in the phenocrysts of the granite porphyry. The Ap1b occurs later than Ap1a in a fine-grained matrix that intersects the earlier phenocrysts. Increases in F/Cl, F/OH, and F/S and decreases in ΣREE and (La/Yb)N from Ap1a to Ap1b suggest the exsolution of a volatile-rich phase from the magma. The skarn hosts three types of hydrothermal apatite (Ap2a, Ap2b, and Ap3), marking the prograde, retrograde, and quartz–sulfide stages of mineralization, respectively. The elemental behaviors of hydrothermal apatite, including the changes in Cl, Eu, As, and REE, were utilized to reflect evolutions in salinity, pH, oxygen fugacity, and fluid compositions. The composition of Ap2a, which occurs as inclusions within garnet, indicates the presence of an early acidic magmatic fluid with high salinity and oxygen fugacity at the prograde skarn stage. The composition of Ap2b, formed by the coupled dissolution-reprecipitation of Ap2a, indicates the presence of a retrograde fluid that is characterized by lower salinity, higher pH, and a significant decrease in oxygen fugacity compared to the prograde fluid. The Ap3 coexists with quartz and sulfide minerals. Based on studies of Ap3, the fluids in the quartz–sulfide stage exhibit relatively reducing conditions, thereby accelerating the precipitation of copper and iron sulfides. A series of Mo-polymetallic deposits have been developed in the Jiaodong Peninsula. Notably, these Mo-dominant deposits formed essentially during the same period as the well-known world-class Au deposits in this area, hinting at a potentially unique geological correlation between them. Therefore, conducting thorough research on Mo deposits in Jiaodong holds significant importance in exploring the area's controlling factors of Mesozoic metal endowments. To reveal the petrogenesis and metallogenic potentials of Mo-fertile and ore-barren granitoid, apatite grains from the Late Aptian Nansu granodiorite and Aishan monzogranite are investigated in this study. Detailed petrographical observations, combined with in situ analysis of electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA) and Laser-ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), have been conducted on apatite grains from the Nansu and Aishan plutons. This comprehensive analysis, encompassing both major and trace elements as well as isotopic characteristics of apatite, aims to elucidate the metallogenic differences within the late Early Cretaceous granitoids of Jiaodong. The results reveal that the apatite grains across all samples belong to fluorapatites, suggesting their magmatic origin. Additionally, chondrite-normalized rare earth element (REE) patterns of apatites in ore-fertile and ore-barren granitoids exhibit a "right-leaning" trend, characterized by relative enrichments in light REEs and depletions in heavy REEs. Both the Nansu and Aishan plutons exhibit moderately negative Eu anomalies (with averages δEu values of 0.44 and 0.51, respectively), along with slightly positive Ce anomalies (averaging δCe values of 1.08 and 1.11, respectively). A negative correlation is observed between their δEu and δCe values, indicating that the parental magmas of ore-fertile and ore-barren granitoids were formed in a relatively oxidizing environment. The calculated apatite OH contents for the Nansu pluton range from 0.26 to 1.38, while those for the Aishan pluton vary between 0.24 and 1.51, indicating comparable melt H2O abundances. Consequently, the results suggest that neither the oxygen fugacities nor the water contents of the parental magma can account for the metallogenic differences between Nansu and Aishan plutons. The apatite in the Nansu pluton exhibits a higher Ce/Pb ratio and a relatively lower Th/U ratio, indicating the involvement of a greater volume of fluids in the magmatic evolution process of this ore-bearing granitoid. Apatite grains sourced from the Nansu and Aishan plutons exhibit εNd(t) values ranging from −16.63 to −17.61 (t = 115.7 Ma) and −17.86 to −20.86 (t = 116.8 Ma), respectively. These results suggest that their parental magmas primarily originated from the partial melting of Precambrian metamorphic basement rocks within the North China Craton, with a minor contribution from mantle-derived materials. Additionally, the presence of mafic microgranular enclaves in both the Nansu and Aishan plutons indicates that both have undergone magma mixing processes. The binary diagrams plotting the ratios of Ba/Th, Sr/Th, and U/Th against La/Sm demonstrate that apatite grains of ore-fertile granitoid exhibit a distinct trend towards sediment melting. This suggests the potential incorporation of sedimentary materials, particularly those rich in molybdenum, into the magmatic source of the Nansu pluton, ultimately leading to the occurrence of molybdenum mineralization. In order to enhance the degree of binding reaction of TiO2 in titanium-containing ceramic glazes and prevent the reaction of its transformation into rutile to eliminate the yellowing phenomenon of the glaze surface, an apatite–TiO2 composite opacifier (ATO) was prepared through the mechanical grinding of hydroxyapatite and anatase TiO2. The properties, opacification mechanism, and yellowing inhibition of the prepared ceramic glazes were studied. The results show that the ATO is characterized by a uniform coating of TiO2 on the surface of the apatite and the formation of close chemical bonding between the apatite and TiO2. The ceramic glaze surface when using an ATO has a white appearance and excellent opacification performance. When an ATO was used, the L*, a*, and b* values of the glaze were 89.99, −0.85, and 3.37, respectively, which were comparable to those of a ZrSiO4 glaze (L*, a*, and b* were 88.24, −0.02, and 2.29, respectively). The opacification of the glaze was slightly lower than that of the TiO2 glaze (L* value was 92.13), but the appearance changed from yellow to the white of the TiO2 glaze (b* value was 9.18). The ceramic glaze layer when using an ATO mainly consists of titanite, glass phase, and a small amount of quartz, and the opacification mechanism is the crystallization of the generated titanite. In the biomedical field, nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite is still one of the most attractive candidates as a bone substitute material due to its analogies with native bone mineral features regarding chemical composition, bioactivity and osteoconductivity. Ion substitution and low crystallinity are also fundamental characteristics of bone apatite, making it metastable, bioresorbable and reactive. In the present work, biomimetic apatite and apatite/chitosan composites were produced by dissolution–precipitation synthesis, using mussel shells as a calcium biogenic source. With an eye on possible bone reconstruction and drug delivery applications, apatite/chitosan composites were loaded with strontium ranelate, an antiosteoporotic drug. Due to the metastability and temperature sensitivity of the produced composites, sintering could be carried out by conventional methods, and therefore, cold sintering was selected for the densification of the materials. The composites were consolidated up to ~90% relative density by applying a uniaxial pressure up to 1.5 GPa at room temperature for 10 min. Both the synthesised powders and cold-sintered samples were characterised from a physical and chemical point of view to demonstrate the effective production of biomimetic apatite/chitosan composites from mussel shells and exclude possible structural changes after sintering. Preliminary in vitro tests were also performed, which revealed a sustained release of strontium ranelate for about 19 days and no cytotoxicity towards human osteoblastic-like cells (MG63) exposed up to 72 h to the drug-containing composite extract. Rare Earth Elements (REE) phosphates (monazite, xenotime, and rhabdophane) are critical REE-bearing minerals typically formed in hydrothermal and magmatic ore deposits. The thermodynamic properties of those REE minerals are crucial to understanding the solubility, speciation, and transport of REE complexes. However, the standard-state Gibbs free energy of formation (∆G°f) values reported for these minerals in the literature vary by up to 25 kJ mol−1. Here, we present linear free energy relationships that allow the evaluation and estimation of the ∆G°f values at 25 °C and 1 bar for the three minerals from the ionic radius (rREE3+) and the non-solvation Gibbs free energy contribution to the REE3+ aqua ion (∆G°n, REE3+): ∆G°f,monazite − 399.71 rREE3+ = 1.0059 ∆G°n,REE3+ − 2522.51; ∆G°f,xenotime − 344.08 rREE3+ = 0.9909 ∆G°n,REE3+ − 2451.53; and ∆G°f,rhabdophane − 416.17 rREE3+ = 1.0067 ∆G°n, REE3+ − 2688.86. Near the Segura pluton, hyper-differentiated magmas enriched in F, P, and Li migrated through shallowly dipping fractures, which were sub-perpendicular to the schistosity of the host Neoproterozoic to Lower Cambrian metasedimentary series, to form two swarms of low-plunging aplite–pegmatite dykes. The high enrichment factors for the fluxing elements (F, P, and Li) compared with peraluminous granites are of the order of 1.5 to 5 and are a consequence of the extraction of low-viscosity magma from the crystallising melt. With magmatic differentiation, increased P and Li activity yielded the crystallisation of the primary amblygonite–montebrasite series and Fe-Mn phosphates. The high activity of sodium during the formation of the albite–topaz assemblage in pegmatites led to the replacement of the primary phosphates by lacroixite. The influx of external, post-magmatic, and Ca-Sr-rich hydrothermal fluids replaced the initial Li-Na phosphates with phosphates of the goyazite–crandallite series and was followed by apatite formation. The Lysan alkaline–ultramafic complex is located in the Sisim shear zone at the contact of the two largest tectonic structures of the accretion–collisional belt in the southwestern frame of the Siberian craton. Intrusions of the complex consist of ore-bearing olivinites, kaersutite clinopyroxenites, and banded kaersutite gabbro, which have been «cut» by albitite dykes and veins. The veins and veinlets of the carbonate rocks are mainly associated with the albitites. The present paper represents the first detailed mineralogical study of carbonate rocks and albitites in the Podlysansky Massif of the Neoproterozoic Lysan alkaline–ultramafic complex. The mineral composition was determined in situ in a polished section by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometry, and electron probe microanalysis. The carbonate rocks of the Podlysan Massif have been found to contain minerals that are typical of siderite–carbonatites (senso stricto), including calcite, siderite, phengitic muscovite, apatite, monazite, REE fluorocarbonates, pyrite, and sphalerite. These rocks are enriched in light rare earth elements due to the presence of monazite-(Ce), bastnäsite-(Ce), parisite-(Ce), and synchysite-(Ce). The albitites were formed as a result of the fenitization of leucocratic gabbro by alkali-rich carbo-hydrothermal fluids in zones of intense development of tectonic fractures. Infiltration was the dominant mechanism of fenitization. The obtained data significantly enhance the current understanding of the geochemical and ore specialization of rocks in the Lysan Complex. Diamondiferous kimberlites occur in the Wafangdian area in the eastern part of the North China Craton (NCC). In order to better constrain their magmatic source and emplacement time, we have investigated apatite from two kimberlites, i.e., the #110 dike kimberlite and the #50 root-zone kimberlite by measuring in situ their U–Pb and Sr–Nd isotopic compositions. The crystallization ages of the #110 and #50 apatites are 460.9 ± 16.8 Ma and 455.4 ± 19.3 Ma, respectively. For the #50 apatite, 87Sr/86Sr = 0.70453–0.70613 and εNd(t) = −2.74 to −4.52. For the #110 apatite, 87Sr/86Sr = 0.70394–0.70478 and εNd(t) = −3.46 to −5.65. Based on the similar distribution patterns of the rare earth elements (REEs) and the similar Sr-Nd isotope compositions of the apatite, it is believed that the #110 and #50 kimberlites have the same source region and the kimberlite magmas in Wafangdian were derived from an enriched mantle source (EMI). The primary magmatic composition has little effect on the emplacement pattern. It is more likely that the geological environment played an important role in controlling the retention and removal of volatile components (H2O and CO2). This led to the different evolutionary paths of the kimberlite magma in the later period, resulting in differences in the major element compositions of the apatite. High Sr concentrations may be associated with hydrothermal (H2O-rich fluid) overprinting events in the later magmatic period; the higher light rare earth element (LREE) concentration of the #50 apatite reflects the involvement of the REE3+ + SiO44− ⇔ Ca2+ + PO43− replacement mechanism. The Xiangho Zng district is the largest low-temperature W-Au-Sb metallogenic area in the world. The Darongxi skarn W deposit in the north of the Xiangzhong district is closely related to biotite monzonite granite, muscovite monzonite granite, and felsophyre, but the nature of granitic magma and its relationship with mineralization is relatively weak. In this paper, U-Pb dating, Lu-Hf isotope, the in situ composition of zircon, and the apatite of biotite monzonite granite, muscovite monzonite granite, and felsophyre in the Darongxi mining area are systematically studied, and the formation age, magma property and source, and their relationship with mineralization are discussed. The values of zircon U-Pb age and the εHf(t) of biotite monzonite granite are 222.2 ± 0.54 Ma and −2.9~−6.4, respectively. The values of zircon U-Pb age and the εHf(t) of muscovite monzonite granite are 220.8 ± 0.58 Ma and −2.7 to −8.1, respectively. The values of zircon U-Pb age and the εHf(t) of felsophyre are 222.3 ± 2.20 Ma and −2.2~−5.4, respectively. Magmatic apatite grains from biotite monzonite granite and muscovite monzonite granite show distinctive core–rim and oscillatory zoning textures in CL images, and demonstrate a bright yellow in colorful CL images. The magmatic apatite has a total rare earth concentration (3766~4627 ppm), exhibiting right-inclined nomorlized rare earth element patterns and obvious negative Eu anomalies. The geochemical data of magmatic zircon and apatite indicate that magma sources are responsible for these intrusions in the Darongxi mining area, mainly derived from the partial melting of the Mesoproterozoic crust, which is rich in W; the magma is rich in F and poor in Cl (F = 2.4~3.3 wt%, Cl = 0.0024~0.0502 wt%). The oxygen fugacity of magmatic zircon (ΔFMQAVG = −4.02~−0.26), the high negative Eu anomaly (δEu = 0.06~0.12) and the low positive Ce anomaly (δCe = 1.09~1.13) of magmatic apatite, and the occurrence of ilmenite all indicate that the redox condition of magma from the Darongxi mining area is reduced. The Fukang Sag in the Junggar Basin is an important petroleum exploration and exploitation region. However, the geothermal regime and tectono-thermal evolution of the Fukang Sag, which control its hydrocarbon generation and conservation, are still controversial. This study involved a systematic analysis of the present-day geothermal gradient, heat flow, and thermal history of the Fukang Sag for better further exploration. According to the well log data and well-testing temperature data, we calculated that the geothermal gradient of the Fukang Sag ranges from 16.6 °C/km to 29.6 °C/km, with an average of 20.8 °C/km, and the heat flow ranges from 34.6 mWm−2 to 64.3 mWm−2, with an average of 44.6 mWm−2. Due to the basement relief, they decrease from northeast to southwest. The weight averages of the single-grain apatite (U-Th)/He ages of the core samples are 1.3–85.2 Ma, and their apatite fission track ages range from 50.9 Ma to 193.8 Ma. The thermal modeling results revealed that the Fukang Sag experienced late Permian, late Jurassic, and late Cretaceous cooling events (although the timing and magnitude of these events varied among the samples), which were related to the continuous compression of the Junggar Basin. In addition, basin modeling indicated that the heat flow of the Fukang Sag decreased from 80 mWm−2 in the Carboniferous to the current value of 44.6 mWm−2. The Fukang Sag's edge exhibits prolific hydrocarbon generation in the Carboniferous–Permian source rocks, while the Jurassic source rocks within the sag also undergo abundant hydrocarbon generation. This study provides new insights into the present-day geothermal field and tectono-thermal evolutionary history of the Fukang Sag, which are significant in terms of regional tectonic evolution and oil and gas resource assessment. The newly developed mineral carbonated apatite has recently been proposed as a bone graft material for bone regenerative treatment in implant therapy. This case series details the clinical and radiographic outcomes of ridge preservation and ridge augmentation using only carbonated apatite as bone graft material for implant treatment. Twenty patients (36 sites) who required bone regeneration and implant placement were retrospectively assessed. Simultaneous carbonated apatite implant placement was performed using the simultaneous ridge preservation or augmentation approach on 24 sites in 13 patients with sufficient bone quantity for primary stabilization based on preoperative evaluation results. A staged ridge preservation or augmentation approach was used for the remaining 12 sites in seven patients with insufficient bone quantity. The mean regenerated bone height for each treatment method was as follows: simultaneous preservation, 7.4 ± 3.3 mm; simultaneous augmentation, 3.6 ± 2.3 mm; staged preservation, 7.2 ± 4.5 mm; and staged augmentation, 6.1 ± 2.7 mm. The mean regenerated bone width for each treatment method was as follows: simultaneous preservation, 6.5 ± 2.9 mm; simultaneous augmentation, 3.3 ± 2.5 mm; staged preservation, 5.5 ± 1.7 mm; and staged augmentation, 3.5 ± 1.9 mm. A variety of changes in mineral metabolism aiming to restore acid–base balance occur in acid loading and metabolic acidosis. Phosphate plays a key role in defense against metabolic acidosis, both as an intracellular and extracellular buffer, as well as in the renal excretion of excess acid in the form of urinary titratable acid. The skeleton acts as an extracellular buffer in states of metabolic acidosis, as the bone matrix demineralizes, leading to bone apatite dissolution and the release of phosphate, calcium, carbonate, and citrate into the circulation. Generally, ceramics are brittle, and porosity is inversely correlated with strength, which is one of the challenges of ceramic scaffolds. Here, we demonstrate that lamellar septum-like carbonate apatite scaffolds have the potential to overcome these challenges. They were fabricated by exploiting the cellular structure of the cuttlebone, removing the organic components from the cuttlebone, and performing hydrothermal treatment. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the scaffolds had a cellular structure with walls between lamellar septa. The interwall and interseptal sizes were 80–180 and 300–500 μm, respectively. The size of the region enclosed by the walls and septa coincided with the macropore size detected by mercury intrusion porosimetry. Although the scaffold porosity was extremely high (93.2%), the scaffold could be handled without disintegration. The compressive stress–strain curve demonstrated that the scaffolds showed layer-by-layer fracture behavior, which seemed beneficial for avoiding catastrophic failure under impact. When the scaffolds were implanted into rabbit femurs, new bone and blood vessels formed within the scaffold cells at 4 weeks. At 12 weeks, the scaffolds were almost entirely replaced with new bone. Bone defects represent an everyday challenge for clinicians who work in the fields of orthopedic surgery, maxillofacial and oral surgery, otorhinolaryngology, and dental implantology. Various bone substitutes have been developed and utilized, according to the needs of bone reconstructive surgery. Carbonate apatite has gained popularity in recent years, due to its excellent tissue behavior and osteoconductive potential. This systematic review aims to evaluate the role of carbonate apatite in bone reconstructive surgery and tissue engineering, analyze its advantages and limitations, and suggest further directions for research and development. The Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus electronic databases were searched for relevant review articles, published from January 2014 to 21 July 2023. The study was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Eighteen studies were included in the present review. The biological properties and medical applications of carbonate apatite (CO3Ap) are discussed and evaluated. The majority of articles demonstrated that CO3Ap has excellent biocompatibility, resorbability, and osteoconductivity. Furthermore, it resembles bone tissue and causes minimal immunological reactions. Mesozoic gabbro from the Stanovoy convergent margin and adakitic dacite lava from the Pliocene–Quaternary Bakening volcano in Kamchatka contain iron–titanium oxide–apatite–sulfide–sulfate (ITOASS) microinclusions along with abundant isolated iron–titanium minerals, sulfides and halides of base and precious metals. Iron–titanium minerals include magnetite, ilmenite and rutile; sulfides include chalcopyrite, pyrite and pyrrhotite; sulfates are represented by barite; and halides are predominantly composed of copper and silver chlorides. Apatite in both gabbro and adakitic dacite frequently contains elevated chlorine concentrations (up to 1.7 wt.%). Mineral thermobarometry suggests that the ITOASS microinclusions and associated Fe-Ti minerals and sulfides crystallized from subduction-related metal-rich melts in mid-crustal magmatic conduits at depths of 10 to 20 km below the surface under almost neutral redox conditions (from the unit below to the unit above the QFM buffer). The ITOASS microinclusions in gabbro and adakite from the Russian Far East provide possible magmatic links to iron oxide–apatite (IOA) and iron oxide–copper–gold (IOCG) deposits and offer valuable insights into the early magmatic (pre-metasomatic) evolution of the IOA and ICOG mineralized systems in paleo-subduction- and collision-related geodynamic environments. The Ordos Basin is rich in oil and gas resources in the Paleozoic strata. The southern part of the basin boasts a thick Paleozoic sedimentary sequence, enriched organic matter, favorable sedimentary facies, and hydrocarbon source rocks with an over-mature thermal evolution stage. However, the lack of in-depth study of the tectono-thermal evolution in the southern basin limits regional oil and gas exploration. In this study, drill core and outcrop samples were collected from the Shanbei Slope and the Weibei Uplift, respectively. These samples were subjected to apatite fission track (AFT) and (U-Th)/He dating (AHe). The results were used to reconstruct the thermal history of the southern basin, calculate exhumation rates, and analyze the tectonic evolution of the basin. The seven annealed AFT data values from the Shanbei Slope range from 21.4 to 52.8 Ma, with mean track lengths of 13.24 μm, and the twelve unannealed AFT data values from the Weibei Uplift range from 111.9 to 204.6 Ma. The seven AHe data values from the Shanbei Slope range from 17.0 to 31.8 Ma, and the eight AHe data values from the Weibei Uplift range from 31.7 to 47.5 Ma. The thermal history is characterized by a prolonged phase of burial and heating from the Triassic to the Late Early Cretaceous, followed by a phase of uplift and cooling that continued into the Cenozoic. This cooling phase exhibits three distinct stages with varying rates of uplift and cooling. According to the dating results, the cooling timing of the southern basin was earlier than that of the central part, and the southern basin experienced higher uplift rates during the Paleogene than in other periods of the Cenozoic. Based on new field, petrographic, and whole-rock geochemistry data, we investigated three discrete metagabbro-diorite complexes (MGDC) across the E-W Sinai to contribute to increasing knowledge of the evolution of the juvenile continental crust of the Neoproterozoic Arabian–Nubian Shield. The three MGDCs vary in the dominance of the gabbroic versus dioritic rock types among each of them. Gabbroids are distinguished into pyroxene-hornblende gabbros and hornblende gabbros, whereas dioritic rocks have been subdivided into diorites and quartz diorites. The studied MGDC rocks are almost metaluminous and possess prevalent calc-alkaline characteristics over subsidiary tholeiitic and alkaline affinities. The most distinctive feature in the profiles of the investigated MGDCs on the N-MORB-normalized spider diagrams is the coincidence of stout negative Nb anomalies and projecting positive Pb spikes, which is typical of igneous rocks evolved in subduction zones. The three MGDC samples exhibit variably LREE-enriched patterns [(La/Yb)N = 4.92–18.55; av. = 9.04], either lacking or possessing weak to negligible positive and negative Eu anomalies. The calculated apatite and zircon crystallization temperatures reveal the earlier separation of apatite at higher temperatures, with the obvious possibility of two genetic types of apatite and zircon in the magma (cognate vs. xenocrystic) since both accessories have yielded very wide ranges of crystallization temperatures. The investigated MGDCs were formed in a continental arc setting, particularly a thick-crust arc (>39 km). The parent magmas comprised components derived from the melting of the mantle wedge, subducting oceanic lithosphere, and subducting overlying sediments. The mantle input was from a spinel–garnet transitional mantle source at a depth of ca. 75–90 km. The impact of slab-derived fluids was much greater than that of slab-derived melts, and so subduction-related fluids had a crucial effect on metasomatizing the partially melted mantle source. Coating layers consisting of a crystalline apatite matrix with immobilized basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) can release bFGF, thereby enhancing bone regeneration depending on their bFGF content. We hypothesized that the incorporation of fluoride ions into apatite crystals would enable the tailored release of bFGF from the coating layer depending on the layer's fluoride content. In the present study, coating layers consisting of fluoride-incorporated apatite (FAp) crystals with immobilized bFGF were coated on a porous collagen sponge by a precursor-assisted biomimetic process using supersaturated calcium phosphate solutions with various fluoride concentrations. The fluoride content in the coating layer increased with the increasing fluoride concentration of the supersaturated solution. The increased fluoride content in the coating layer reduced its solubility and suppressed the burst release of bFGF from the coated sponge into a physiological salt solution. The bFGF release was caused by the partial dissolution of the coating layer and, thus, accompanied by the fluoride release. The concentrations of released bFGF and fluoride were controlled within the estimated effective ranges in enhancing bone regeneration. These findings provide useful design guidelines for the construction of a mineralized, bFGF-releasing collagen scaffold that would be beneficial for bone tissue engineering, although further in vitro and in vivo studies are warranted. Magnesium, as one of the most abundant cations in the human body, plays an important role in both physiological and pathological processes. In this study, it was shown that a promising biomedical material, Mg-substituted hydroxyapatite (Mg-HA), can be synthesized via a fast mechanochemical method. For this method, the nature of magnesium-containing carriers was shown to be important. When using magnesium oxide as a source of magnesium, the partial insertion of magnesium cations into the apatite structure occurs. In contrast, when magnesium hydroxide or monomagnesium phosphate is used, single-phase Mg-HA is formed. Both experimental and theoretical investigations showed that an increase in the Mg content leads to a decrease in the lattice parameters and unit cell volume of Mg-HA. Density functional theory calculations showed the high sensitivity of the lattice parameters to the crystallographic position of the calcium site substituted by magnesium. It was shown experimentally that the insertion of magnesium cations decreases the thermal stability of hydroxyapatite. The thermal decomposition of Mg-HA leads to the formation of a mixture of stoichiometric HA, magnesium oxide, and Mg-substituted tricalcium phosphate phases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Port Radium U-Cu-Ni-Co-Ag deposit in northwestern Canada is hosted within a mineral system that has generated a variety of mineralization styles from iron oxide-copper-gold to iron oxide-apatite, porphyry, skarn, and epithermal. Their genesis is linked to an extensive subduction-related magmatism that formed widespread dacite-rhyodacite-andesite volcanic and volcanoclastic sequences (~1.87 Ga), which have been intruded by their equivalent intrusive plutons. Pervasive and intensive hydrothermal alterations, including albitic, magnetite-actinolite-apatite, potassic ± albitic, phyllic, and propylitic occurred before the main sulfide, sulfarsenide, and uraninite vein-type mineralization. Although scarce sulfide minerals formed at the beginning of the hydrothermal activity, the main polymetallic arsenide-sulfarsenide-sulfide ± uraninite vein-type mineralization occurred during the epithermal stage. In addition to the common arsenides and sulfarsenides including nickeline, cobaltite, rammelsbergite, safflorite, skutterudite, gersdorffite, and arsenopyrite, three unique sulfarsenides were also found: Co0.67Ni0.32Fe0.02S0.19As2.80, which could be a sulfur-rich skutterudite, Ni0.85Co0.15S0.39As1.60, and Ni0.69Co0.31S0.47As1.52, which are chemically comparable to the Port Radium rammelsbergite with substantial addition of S and Co; they could be the solid solution product of gersdorffite-cobaltite or safflorite-rammelsbergite. The Sn-W ore deposits in the Krupka surroundings are associated with greisens, which occur in the upper parts of Late Variscan granitoid intrusions. Fluid inclusions were studied in samples of quartz, cassiterite, apatite, fluorite, and topaz in greisenized granites, greisens, and hydrothermal veins with Sn-W mineralization. The greisenization process took place at temperatures 370–490 °C and pressures 155–371 bars, and associated fluids had predominantly low salinity and a low gas (CO2, N2 and CH4) content. The post-greisenization stage was connected with the formation of (i) low-salinity (0–8 wt. % NaCl eq.) fluid inclusions with homogenization temperatures <120–295 °C and (ii) high-salinity (18 to >35 wt. % NaCl eq.) fluid inclusions with homogenization temperatures 140–370 °C, often containing trapped crystals of quartz, topaz, and sulfides, or daughter crystals of salts and carbonates, which were identified by microthermometric measurements, electron microprobe analysis, and Raman spectroscopy. Analyses of fluid inclusion leachates have shown that Na and Ca chlorides predominate in fluids. According to hydrogen stable isotopes, the source of greisenizing and post-greisenizing fluids was not only magmatogenic but also meteoric water or fluids derived from sedimentary rocks. Patterns of Phanerozoic burial and erosion across the cratonic interior of North America can help constrain the continental hypsometric history and the potential influence of dynamic topography on continental evolution. Large areas of the Canadian Shield currently lack Phanerozoic sedimentary cover, but thermochronology data can help reconstruct the previous extent, thickness, and erosion of Phanerozoic strata that once covered the craton. Here, we report apatite (U-Th)/He (AHe) data for 15 samples of Precambrian basement rocks and 1 sample of Triassic kimberlite from a 1400 km–long east–west transect across the southern Canadian Shield. Single-grain basement AHe dates range from >500 Ma in the west to <250 Ma in the east. AHe dates for the kimberlite in the middle of the transect overlap with the pipe's Triassic eruption age. These data, combined with previous apatite fission-track data, geologic constraints, and thermal history modeling, are used to constrain the first-order regional thermal history that we interpret in the context of continental burial and erosion. Our burial and erosion model is characterized by Paleozoic burial that was greater to the east, unroofing that migrated eastward through Jurassic time, and little to no post-Triassic burial. This pattern suggests dynamic and tectonic forces related to Appalachian convergence, subduction cessation, and later rifting as drivers. The AHe data contribute to efforts to collect thermochronology data across the Canadian Shield to map out continental-scale burial and erosion patterns. The outcomes can be used to refine mantle dynamic models and test how dynamic topography, far-field tectonics, and other effects influence the surface histories of continental interiors. An in situ electron microprobe study of detrital minerals yielded important insights into the diagenetic history of the Cretaceous-to-Paleogene flysch sandstones from the Chvalčov site, Rača Unit, Flysch Belt of the Outer Western Carpathians. Detrital titanite and a Fe-Ti mineral (probably ilmenite) were almost completely altered to TiO2 minerals, which also newly crystallized in intergranular spaces of sandstone. Brookite, anatase, and, exceptionally, rutile were identified by Raman spectroscopy. Authigenic TiO2 phases show complex composition with occasionally elevated contents of Fe, Nb, Zr, V, Sc, Cr, Al, Y, and/or P, which were likely sourced from altered neighboring heavy minerals. In addition, rare authigenic LREE- and Y-enriched apatite rims were observed on detrital apatite. The remobilization of REE, Y, and HFSE was likely mediated by acidic early diagenetic fluids enriched in fluoride and sulfate anions. The superimposed formation of calcite cement was associated with the dissolution of detrital garnet, feldspars, and quartz. The compositions of detrital apatite and garnet (Alm60-82Prp4-30Sps0-24Grs0-19) are comparable with those from adjacent parts of the Flysch Belt. Detrital rutile is enriched in Nb, V, Cr, and Zr. Our study illustrates the intensity of diagenetic alteration of detrital minerals in flysch sandstones as well as the usefulness of in-situ electron-microprobe investigations for the recognition of processes influencing heavy minerals in diagenetically altered sediments. Minerals of the apatite group commonly occur in granite pegmatites, and their ability to incorporate a wide range of trace elements makes them a good indicator of magma composition and magmatic–hydrothermal processes. Gem-quality purple apatite crystals from the Dara-e-Pech pegmatite field in Afghanistan have rarely been reported. Here, we investigated apatite crystals originated from this locality, using gemological testing, chemical analysis, and in situ U–Pb dating, with the purpose of identifying their origin, the constraints on the magma source in which the apatite crystals were formed, and the timing of the magmatic–hydrothermal activity. Our findings demonstrate that the purple apatite crystals were impure fluorapatite, characterized by heavy rare-earth element (HREE) enrichment, intermediate Eu anomalies, and non-CHARAC Y/Ho ratios. The results showed that these apatite crystals yielded a lower intercept age of 135.8 ± 6.9 Ma. We proposed that the pegmatitic apatite samples formed in a transitional magmatic–hydrothermal pegmatitic system with moderate fO2 in the Early Cretaceous (~135 Ma). Autologous bone grafting is the primary method for treating alveolar clefts. However, bone grafting materials are desired as alternatives to autogenous bone to reduce surgical invasiveness. Here, we present an animal study evaluating the effect of carbonate apatite (CA) on the spontaneous eruption of permanent teeth. The bone grafting materials included CA, natural bovine bone (BB), and hydroxyapatite (HA). In 15 8-week-old male beagle dogs, the left mandibular deciduous premolars (DP) two and three were extracted and subsequently filled with CA, BB, and HA. The animals were euthanized after a predetermined number of days, and samples were collected for microcomputed tomography and histological evaluation. Spontaneous eruption of the succeeding permanent teeth (P3 and P4) was observed in the CA group at 14 weeks. Delayed eruption of the succeeding permanent teeth was observed in the BB and HA groups. The internal structure of the scaffolds is a key factor for bone regeneration. In this study, we focused on the space dimensionality within the scaffold that may control cell migration and evaluated the effects on the size and orientation of blood vessels and the amount of bone formation in the scaffold. The carbonate apatite scaffolds with intrascaffold space allowing one-dimensional (1D), two-dimensional (2D), or three-dimensional (3D) cell migration were fabricated by 3D printing. These scaffolds had the same space size, i.e., distances between the struts (~300 µm). The scaffolds were implanted into the medial condyle of rabbit femurs for four weeks. Both the size and orientation degree of the blood vessels formed in the scaffolds allowing 1D cell migration were 2.5- to 4.0-fold greater than those of the blood vessels formed in the scaffolds allowing 2D and 3D cell migration. Furthermore, the amount of bone formed in the scaffolds allowing 1D cell migration was 1.4-fold larger than that formed in the scaffolds allowing 2D and 3D cell migration. These are probably because the 1D space limited the direction of cell migration and prevented the branching of blood vessels, whereas 2D and 3D spaces provided the opportunity for random cell migration and blood vessel branching. Various magmatic–hydrothermal activities have resulted in different styles of polymetallic mineralization in South China. Shuikoushan is a large Fe-Cu-Pb-Zn-Au-Ag orefield situated in fold-and-thrust belts within the South China Block. Two types of granodiorite have been identified in recent drilling work. The early-stage, coarse-grained granodiorite has developed magnetite-bearing skarns in the deep level. The late-stage, fine-grained granodiorite is associated with garnet-hematite–magnetite–pyrite–sphalerite–chalcopyrite-bearing skarns in its contact zone. Away from the garnet-bearing skarn are calcite–quartz–pyrite–sphalerite–galena veinlets in faulted breccia. Fieldwork has identified iron mineralization in both skarns, whereas copper mineralization was only discovered in the garnet-bearing skarns. Lead, zinc, gold, and silver mineralization were observed in the garnet-bearing skarns and faulted breccia. Zircon U–Pb analyses suggested the emplacement of two granodiorite at 167.8 ± 0.8 Ma (MSWD = 1.1, N = 31) and 163.6 ± 0.7 Ma (MSWD = 1.3, N = 32). Apatite and garnet U–Pb dating further indicated the magnetite-bearing skarns of 166.2 ± 1.9 Ma (MSWD = 4.5, N = 27), the hematite–magnetite–sulfide-bearing skarns of 158.6 ± 2.8 Ma (MSWD = 1.3, N = 34), and the calcite–quartz–sulfide veinlets of 159.5 ± 5.2 Ma (MSWD = 1.7, N = 24). The time–space relationship between the two intrusions and hydrothermal activities suggests that the fine-grained granodiorite is responsible for polymetallic mineralization. Whole-rock geochemistry analyses demonstrated the enrichment of LILEs and the depletion of Nb and Ta in two granodiorites, with a slight enrichment in LREEs and flat HREE patterns. These granodiorite bodies therefore belong to high-K calc-alkaline magma generated via the crust's partial melting. The fine-grained granodiorite generally has a lower HREE and higher Dy/Yb, Sr/Y ratios than coarse-grained granodiorite, corresponding to the source of magma in garnet stable lower crust. The residual garnet keeps ferric iron in melts, leaving the fine-granodiorite more oxidized for copper and gold concentration. Through these analyses and our drilling work, a continuous skarn–hydrothermal–epithermal system has been identified for Cu-Pb-Zn-Au-Ag targeting in Shuikoushan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents petrography, X-ray electron probe energy-dispersive (EDS), laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), and Raman spectroscopy data to characterize the mineral associations and composition of apatite group minerals from anorthosites of the Kievey deposit, North platinum group-element (PGE) Reef, Fedorova-Pana Complex, Kola Peninsula, Russia. The mineralized coarse-grained anorthosite belongs to the most common rock type of the main ore body, and hosts irregular interstitial sulfide disseminations of 5–7 vol.%. Apatite in the anorthosite occurs as (a) euhedral grains included in the marginal parts of cumulus plagioclase laths, and (b) xenomorphic grains associated with intercumulus minerals. The composition of apatite evolves along a narrow trend from fluorapatite to hydroxylapatite. The F content of apatite reaches 2.21 wt.%; the maximum Sr and rare earth element (REE) concentrations are 257 and 5623 ppm, respectively, while the average ratio of La/YbN = 11.78, Sr/Sr* = 0.01, and Eu/Eu* = 0.06. Compared to classic PGE reefs in layered intrusions, such as Bushveld in South Africa and Stillwater in the United States, the mineralized anorthosite is distinguished by apatite with an unusually low chlorine concentration of only 0.46 wt.%. Rare earth element and Yttrium (REY)-rich deep-sea sediments have been identified as significant potential resources. Although grain size analysis is important for the study of deposition environment and the future exploration of REY, related research is limited. Here, we have investigated the grain size and mineral composition of bulk pelagic sediments from Western North Pacific to indicate the evolutions of deposition environment. Grain size analysis results reveal that silt contents are dominant, and the grain size ranges between 20 and 40 μm and can be an additional grain characteristic indicator for REY-rich sediments. Furthermore, the better sorting coefficient of REY-rich sediments reflects the scouring action of bottom currents, which allows the preservation of coarse-grained bioapatite and the removal of clay fraction particles. ΣREY is negatively correlated with clay fractions but positively correlated with sand and silt fractions for the REY-rich sediments, and this is consistent with the dominant distribution of silt-sized biogenic apatite. In addition, grain size distribution (GSD) varies significantly after HCl treatment in the REY-rich sediment. Therefore, for deep-sea sediments collected below the carbonate compensation depth (CCD), an additional presence of a grain size peak at ~20–40 μm and distinct differences in GSD after HCl treatment can serve as important indicators for REY enrichment sediments. This study presents a comprehensive evaluation of novel composite biomaterials designed for dental applications, aiming to potentially address the prevalent challenge of dental and periodontal tissue loss. The composites consisted of biomimetic hydroxyapatite (mHA) enriched with Mg2+, CO32−, and Zn2+ ions, type I collagen, alginate, and, additionally, chitosan and sericin. The granules were loaded with ibuprofen sodium salt. The investigation encompassed a morphology characterization, a porosity analysis, a chemical structure assessment, and an examination of the swelling behavior, drug release kinetics (ibuprofen), and release profiles of zinc and magnesium ions. The granules exhibited irregular surfaces with an enhanced homogeneity in the chitosan-coated granules and well-developed mesoporous structures. The FT-IR spectra confirmed the presence of ibuprofen sodium, despite overlapping bands for the polymers. The granules demonstrated a high water-absorption capacity, with delayed swelling observed in the chitosan-coated granules. Ibuprofen displayed burst-release profiles, especially in the G1 and G3 samples. In the case of the chitosan-coated granules (G2 and G4), lower amounts of ibuprofen were released. In turn, there was a significant difference in the released amount of magnesium and zinc ions from the granules, which was most likely caused by their different location in the hydroxyapatite crystals. The cytotoxicity assays confirmed the non-cytotoxic behavior of the biomaterial. It is known that complexes based on natural polysaccharides are able to eliminate bone defects. Prolonged hyperglycemia leads to low bone regeneration and a chronic inflammatory response. The purpose of this study was to increase the efficiency of early bone formation in a cavity of critical size in diabetes mellitus in the experiment. The polyelectrolyte complex contains high-molecular ascorbate of chitosan, chondroitin sulfate, sodium hyaluronate, heparin, adgelon serum growth factor, sodium alginate and amorphous nanohydroxyapatite (CH–SA–HA). Studies were conducted on five groups of white female Wistar rats: group 1—regeneration of a bone defect in healthy animals under a blood clot; group 2—regeneration of a bone defect under a blood clot in animals with diabetes mellitus; group 3—bone regeneration in animals with diabetes mellitus after filling the bone cavity with a collagen sponge; group 4—filling of a bone defect with a CH–SA–HA construct in healthy animals; group 5—filling of a bone defect with a CH–SA–HA construct in animals with diabetes mellitus. Implantation of the CH–SA–HA construct into bone cavities in type I diabetic rats can accelerate the rate of bone tissue repair. Guttapercha (GP, trans-1,4-polyisoprene) is the most used tooth root filling material, and it must be used with an appropriate cement (typically a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based sealer) to ensure an adequate canal obturation. This study aimed to assess the bioactivity and dentin remineralization ability of a bioglass containing PDMS commercial endodontic sealer, BG-PDMS (GuttaFlow Bioseal), and to evaluate the possible influence of a GP cone (Roeko GP point) on the mineralization process. To this end, BG-PDMS disks were aged alone or in the presence of a GP cone in Hank's Balanced Salt Solution (28 d, 37 °C). Dentin remineralization experiments were carried out under the same conditions. Micro-Raman and IR analyses demonstrated that BG-PDMS is bioactive, thanks to the formation of a silica-rich layer with nucleation sites for B-type carbonated apatite deposition. This phase was thicker when BG-PDMS was aged in the presence of GP. The two materials influenced each other because GP, which alone did not show any bioactivity, nucleated a calcium phosphate phase under these conditions. Analogously, dentin remineralization experiments showed that BG-PDMS is able to remineralize dentin, especially in the presence of GP. The Middle Paleoproterozoic (1.99 Ga) Tiksheozero ultramafic‒alkaline‒carbonatite complex in Northern Karelia is one of the Earth's oldest alkaline complexes. The major and trace-element compositions of minerals were used to decipher the genetic relations between ultramafic cumulates, alkaline rocks, and carbonatites. Based on detailed analysis of clinopyroxenes from ultramafic cumulates, it was assumed that they were derived from an alkaline melt. It was estimated that ultramafic cumulates and alkaline rocks were formed at close moderate pressure, which in combination with the above facts, is consistent with their cogenetic origin. The REE patterns of clinopyroxenes are characterized by the high LREE/HREE fractionation, with slightly convex-upward LREE patterns (La/Nd < 1), which are typical of deep-seated cumulates formed in an equilibrium with an alkaline basaltic melt. Two types of REE zoning were distinguished in apatite using cathodoluminescence imaging. The first type with an outward LREE decrease was found in apatite from silicate rocks of the complex and was likely produced by the closed-system overgrowth of apatite from a residual melt at the late magmatic stage. In contrast, apatite from carbonatite is characterized by a slight outward LREE increase, which is likely related to the re-equilibration of apatite with fresh batches of REE-enriched carbonatite magma. Precipitation of monazite along fractures and margins of apatite in complex with essential HREE and Y enrichment observed in syenite is indicative of the metasomatic interaction of this rock with fluid. Apatites from alkaline rocks and carbonatites define a common trend in the Y–Ho diagram, with a decrease in the Y/Ho ratio from foidolites to carbonatites. This fact together with the absence of signs of liquid immiscibility, and compositional variations in apatite in silicate rocks and carbonatites, are consistent with their origin through fractional crystallization rather than liquid immiscibility. Phosphate ore is an important strategic mineral resource. The efficient utilization of phosphate resources faces challenges such as low grade of raw ore and difficulty in discharging gangue minerals. One of the key problems to be solved urgently in the reverse flotation of phosphate ore is the effective depression of apatite. However, research on the influence mechanism of acid depressants on the surface properties and adsorption characteristics of apatite is still insufficient. In this study, the influence of different depressants (such as sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid or mixed acid of sulfur acid and phosphorus acid) on the flotation separation performance of an artificial mixture of apatite and dolomite (gangue mineral) was investigated through laboratory flotation tests. On this basis, with the addition of different depressants, the contact angle, zeta potential, XPS and TOC were used to investigate the surface wettability, surface charge, surface species and the adsorption characteristics of the collector (sodium oleate) on the apatite surface, and, accordingly, the inhibiting mechanism was discussed. The results show that, when mixed acid of sulfur acid and phosphorus acid is used as a depressant, a concentrate with a P2O5 grade of 33.53% and a recovery of 88.92% can be obtained, and the parameters are better than when using phosphoric acid with a P2O5 grade of 30.15% and a recovery of 80.12% or sulfuric acid with a P2O5 grade of 30.12% and a recovery of 80.58%. Our analysis shows that the mixed acid has the best inhibiting effect on apatite, which is mainly due to the following: (a) after adding the mixed acid, chemicals such as CaSO4, CaHPO4/Ca(H2PO4)2 are generated on the surface of apatite, resulting in a significant reduction in the contact angle and stronger surface hydrophilicity; (b) the mixed acid reduces the zeta potential of apatite, produces new species and weakens the non-selective adsorption of negatively charged oleate on the surface of apatite, thus preventing the apatite from floating. Bone tissue degeneration, caused by disease as well as trauma, is a problem affecting many social groups in the 21st century. It involves pain and reduced patient comfort. Developments in materials engineering allow for the design of novel, innovative materials that can be used in therapies to promote bone regeneration. This work presents the preparation of a ceramic–polymer coating modified with carbon nanotubes on a titanium alloy for biomedical applications. The ceramic part is hydroxyapatite synthesized by the wet precipitation method using orthophosphate and calcium hydroxide. The polymer of choice was polyethylene glycol. A UV light synthesis method was successfully applied to obtain coatings characterized by continuity and full crosslinking. Extensive physicochemical analysis and incubation studies were carried out. Interactions between coatings and fluids mimicking artificial biological environments were analyzed for 9 days, i.e., in fluids such as SBF solution, artificial saliva, and distilled water. During the in vitro incubation, changes in pH values were measured by potentiometric tests, and ionic conductivity was measured by analyzing conductometry. After incubation, the surface morphology was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) together with energy-dispersive (EDS) microanalysis, which made it possible to determine the presence of individual elements on the surface, as well as to observe the appearance of new apatite layers. Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry was also performed before and at the end of the incubation period. On the basis of the presented studies, it was concluded that coatings that contain nanotubes are bioactive and do not negatively affect the properties of the coatings. Bioactivity was confirmed microscopically by observing new apatite layers after incubation in SBF, which were identified as phosphorus and calcium deposits. Degradation of the polymer phase was observed in the artificial saliva. These materials require further study, including safety analysis, but they demonstrate potential for further work. Some reports in the literature show the advantages of fluoride-containing apatite ceramics over hydroxyapatite (HAP), at least in some aspects. While HAP has been used extensively in the treatment of bone defects, fluoridated apatite has hardly been tested in vivo. In order to verify the biological properties of fluoride-doped apatite and to assess its therapeutic potential, we synthesized fluorapatite (FAP) and applied it as a filling in bone defects of experimental animals (rabbits). The treatment effects were evaluated on extracted bones after 3 and 6 months from implantation using peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT), dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), radiography (X-ray) and histological staining. The study proved the integration between FAP and the bone tissue, thus indicating its stimulating effect on new bone formation and mineralization. The results achieved after 3 months of treatment were difficult to interpret unequivocally and suggested the transient delay in FAP integration of bone in comparison with HAP. The reasons for this phenomenon are unclear. Most likely, these differences between FAP and HAP resulted mainly from the different porosities, densities and ionic reactivity of the ceramics, which in our opinion affected their solubility, integration and degree of bone tissue resorption. However, it was shown that 6 months after implantation, similar level of bone defect regeneration was achieved for both FAP and HAP.
