Accurately extracting large-scale offshore floating raft aquaculture (FRA) areas is crucial for supporting scientific planning and precise aquaculture management. While remote sensing technology offers advantages such as wide coverage, rapid imaging, and multispectral capabilities for FRA monitoring, the current methods face challenges in terms of establishing spatial–spectral correlations and extracting multiscale features, thereby limiting their accuracy. To address these issues, we propose an innovative multiscale spatial–spectral fusion network (MSSFNet) designed specifically for extracting offshore FRA areas from multispectral remote sensing imagery. MSSFNet effectively integrates spectral and spatial information through a spatial–spectral feature extraction block (SSFEB), significantly enhancing the accuracy of FRA area identification. Additionally, a multiscale spatial attention block (MSAB) captures contextual information across different scales, improving the ability to detect FRA areas of varying sizes and shapes while minimizing edge artifacts. We created the CHN-YE7-FRA dataset using Sentinel-2 multispectral remote sensing imagery and conducted extensive evaluations. The results showed that MSSFNet achieved impressive metrics: an F1 score of 90.76%, an intersection over union (IoU) of 83.08%, and a kappa coefficient of 89.75%, surpassing those of state-of-the-art methods. The ablation results confirmed that the SSFEB and MSAB modules effectively enhanced the FRA extraction accuracy. Furthermore, the successful practical applications of MSSFNet validated its generalizability and robustness across diverse marine environments. These findings highlight the performance of MSSFNet in both experimental and real-world scenarios, providing reliable, precise FRA area monitoring. The accurate extraction and monitoring of offshore aquaculture areas are crucial for the marine economy, environmental management, and sustainable development. Existing methods relying on unimodal remote sensing images are limited by natural conditions and sensor characteristics. To address this issue, we integrated multispectral imaging (MSI) and synthetic aperture radar imaging (SAR) to overcome the limitations of single-modal images. We propose a cross-modal multidimensional frequency perception network (CMFPNet) to enhance classification and extraction accuracy. CMFPNet includes a local–global perception block (LGPB) for combining local and global semantic information and a multidimensional adaptive frequency filtering attention block (MAFFAB) that dynamically filters frequency-domain information that is beneficial for aquaculture area recognition. We constructed six typical offshore aquaculture datasets and compared CMFPNet with other models. The quantitative results showed that CMFPNet outperformed the existing methods in terms of classifying and extracting floating raft aquaculture (FRA) and cage aquaculture (CA), achieving mean intersection over union (mIoU), mean F1 score (mF1), and mean Kappa coefficient (mKappa) values of 87.66%, 93.41%, and 92.59%, respectively. Moreover, CMFPNet has low model complexity and successfully achieves a good balance between performance and the number of required parameters. Qualitative results indicate significant reductions in missed detections, false detections, and adhesion phenomena. Overall, CMFPNet demonstrates great potential for accurately extracting large-scale offshore aquaculture areas, providing effective data support for marine planning and environmental protection. Converting low-grade thermal energy into electrical energy is crucial for the development of modern smart wearable energy technologies. The free-standing films of PEDOT@Bi2Te3 prepared by tape-casting hold promise for flexible thermoelectric technology in self-powered sensing applications. Bi2Te3 nanosheets fabricated by the solvothermal method are tightly connected with flat-arranged PEODT molecules, forming an S-Bi bonded interface in the composite materials, and the bandgap is reduced to 1.63 eV. Compared with the PEDOT film, the mobility and carrier concentration of the composite are significantly increased at room temperature, and the conductivity reaches 684 S/cm. Meanwhile, the carrier concentration decreased sharply at 360 K indicating the creation of defect energy levels during the interfacial reaction of the composites, which increased the Seebeck coefficient. The power factor was improved by 68.9% compared to PEDOT. In addition, the introduction of Bi2Te3 nanosheets generated defects and multidimensional interfaces in the composite film, which resulted in weak phonon scattering in the conducting polymer with interfacial scattering. The thermal conductivity of the film is decreased and the ZT value reaches 0.1. The composite film undergoes 1500 bending cycles with a 14% decrease in conductivity and has good flexibility. Slope leveling is essential for the successful implementation of ground-mounted centralized photovoltaic (PV) plants, but currently, there is a lack of optimization methods available. To address this issue, a linear programming approach has been proposed to optimize PV slope leveling. This method involves dividing the field into blocks and grids and using hyperbolic paraboloids to simulate the design surface. By programming in MATLAB, the globally optimal solution for PV slope leveling can be calculated. Engineering case studies have demonstrated that this optimization method can achieve significant cut-and-fill volume savings ranging from 58% to 78%, when compared to the traditional segmented plane method. Additionally, the effectiveness of the optimization method improves with larger site areas and more complex terrains. A parameter analysis considering slope ratio, grid size, and block size reveals that grid size has a minimal impact on cut-and-fill volume, while slope ratio and block size have a significant influence. For typical PV projects, the recommended ranges of slope ratio, grid size, and block size are 3–7%, 5–20 m, and 30–50 m, respectively, for slope leveling design. In summary, the proposed linear optimization method provides an optimal slope leveling scheme for ground-mounted centralized PV plants, with convenient operation and fast computation. Beira Lake, located in Colombo, Sri Lanka, has suffered severe anthropogenic impacts, with previous restoration attempts failing due to a limited understanding of pollutant dynamics. Aiming to fill this gap, a comprehensive study was conducted during dry and wet seasons to assess the spatiotemporal water pollution of Beira Lake, employing key physicochemical parameters, numerical indices, and remote sensing analysis. The water pollution index (WPI) results categorize Beira Lake as highly polluted, with WPI values ranging from 2.38 ± 0.92 in the wet season to 2.53 ± 1.32 in the dry season. Comparatively higher COD levels recorded in the Beira Lake network, especially for Gangarama Lake show significant pollution levels during both the dry and wet seasons, e.g., the highest COD levels, at 306.40 mg/L, were observed during the wet season. The Trophic State Index (TSI) results indicate eutrophic and hypereutrophic conditions in Beira Lake, which are particularly pronounced during the wet season. The heavy metal pollution index (HPI) results suggest elevated heavy metal concentrations in Beira Lake, especially in the wet season. Combined with field investigation results, a remote sensing data analysis between 2016 and 2023 reveals significant improvements in water transparency, suggesting positive effects of recent management interventions. Parameters demanding attention include COD, nitrate, and total phosphate levels due to their consistent exceedance of permissible limits. The PCA results of indices correlations between wet and dry seasons offer valuable insights into the complex dynamics of Beira Lake's water quality. The study makes recommendations for restoring Beira Lake, including stringent pollution controls, regular dredging, green infrastructure implementation, implementing new rules and regulations, and community engagement. In recent years, the rapid growth of vehicles has imposed a significant burden on urban road resources. To alleviate urban traffic congestion in intelligent transportation systems (ITS), real-time and accurate traffic flow prediction has emerged as an effective approach. However, selecting relevant parameters from traffic flow information and adjusting hyperparameters in intelligent algorithms to achieve high prediction accuracy is a time-consuming process, posing practical challenges in dynamically changing traffic conditions. To address these challenges, this paper introduces a novel prediction architecture called Multiple Variables Heuristic Selection Long Short-Term Memory (MVHS-LSTM). The key innovation lies in its ability to select informative parameters, eliminating unnecessary factors to reduce computational costs while achieving a balance between prediction performance and computing efficiency. The MVHS-LSTM model employs the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method to intelligently reduce factors and optimize cost efficiency. Additionally, it dynamically selects hyperparameters through a heuristic iteration process involving epoch, learning rate, and window length, ensuring adaptability and improved accuracy. Extensive simulations were conducted using real traffic flow data from Shanghai to evaluate the enhanced performance of MVHS-LSTM. 14-3-3 proteins are widely distributed in eukaryotic cells and play an important role in plant growth, development, and stress tolerance. This study revealed nine 14-3-3 genes from the genome of Nitraria sibirica Pall., a halophyte with strong salt tolerance. The physicochemical properties, multiple sequence alignment, gene structure and motif analysis, and chromosomal distributions were analyzed, and phylogenetic analysis, cis-regulatory elements analysis, and gene transcription and expression analysis of Ns14-3-3s were conducted. The results revealed that the Ns14-3-3 gene family consists of nine members, which are divided into two groups: ε (four members) and non-ε (five members). These members are acidic hydrophilic proteins. The genes are distributed randomly on chromosomes, and the number of introns varies widely among the two groups. However, all genes have similar conserved domains and three-dimensional protein structures. The main differences are found at the N-terminus and C-terminus. The promoter region of Ns14-3-3s contains multiple cis-acting elements related to light, plant hormones, and abiotic stress responses. Transcriptional profiling and gene expression pattern analysis revealed that Ns14-3-3s were expressed in all tissues, although with varying patterns. Under salt stress conditions, Ns14-3-3 1a, Ns14-3-3 1b, Ns14-3-3 5a, and Ns14-3-3 7a showed significant changes in gene expression. Ns14-3-3 1a expression decreased in all tissues, Ns14-3-3 7a expression decreased by 60% to 71% in roots, and Ns14-3-3 1b expression increased by 209% to 251% in stems. The most significant change was observed in Ns14-3-3 5a, with its expression in stems increasing by 213% to 681%. The yeast two-hybrid experiments demonstrated that Ns14-3-3 5a interacts with NsVP1 (vacuolar H+-pyrophosphatase). This result indicates that Ns14-3-3 5a may respond to salt stress by promoting ionic vacuole compartmentalization in stems and leaves through interactions with NsVP1. In addition, N. sibirica has a high number of stems, allowing it to compartmentalize more ions through its stem and leaf. Calcareous sand, ubiquitous in the geotechnical makeup of the South China Sea, exhibits both compressibility and vulnerability to fragmentation when subjected to external loading, spanning a spectrum from typical to extreme conditions. This investigation aims to quantitatively assess the compression and particle breakage characteristics of calcareous sand under varied parameters, including relative density, saturation, applied loads, and loading paths, specifically focusing on sustainable geotechnical methodologies. Through a series of confined compression tests, this evaluation employed the relative breakage ratio and fractal dimension as key evaluative metrics. The results indicated that employing this integrated approach offered a more comprehensive understanding of calcareous sand breakdown mechanisms than relying on a singular particle breakage index. Furthermore, an increase in relative density can induce a transition in particle contact behavior, shifting from point-to-point interactions to face-to-face contact, thereby reducing inter-particle stress and minimizing grain breakage, particularly under loads below 200 kPa. Increasing loads exacerbated particle breakage, with finer particles predominantly initiating this process. During reloading, pore ratios across various load levels surpass those observed during initial loading, except at 1600 kPa, where a decline in pore ratio was noted, coinciding with pore water extrusion and the onset of new particle fracturing. The lubricating effect of water reduces inter-particle friction, enhancing stress concentration at particle edges and localized particle breakage, thereby increasing the presence of finer particles without significantly altering the overall structure. Notably, the influence of pore water pressure is evident during the reloading phase. These findings contribute to a refined theoretical framework for predicting coastal erosion risks and devising effective environmental protection strategies for sustainable coastal engineering practices. Combined with the development trend of high speed generators and the high voltage of DC microgrids in high-power series hybrid aero propulsion system, a set of hybrid systems with a power of 200 kW, voltage of 540 V, and speed of 21,000 r/min is established in this article. Ground starting tests were conducted, focusing on the analysis of the coupling characteristics between the engine, generator and motors/propellers during the starting process, and further facilitated the optimization of the strategy of starting control. Firstly, the starting process of the series hybrid aero propulsion system mainly consists of four stages: the turboshaft engine is started, the gas turbine speed is increased, the controlled rectification intervenes, and the electric propeller is activated. The recommended definition of the idle state of the 200 kW hybrid propulsion system in this paper is as follows: power turbine speed NP = 10,500 rpm, grid system voltage UDC = 540 V, and the minimum stable power state of the electric motor PM = 150 W. Furthermore, experiments reveal that during the starting process, the resistance value and the rectification strategy, respectively, affect the steady-state and dynamic characteristics of the power turbine speed. By comparing multiple sets of experiments and utilizing data fitting software for optimal design, the results indicate that, based on the starting strategy of no-load protection and two-step controlled rectification, the total duration of the optimized starting process is shortened by 64.7%, and the gas turbine speed is reduced by 22.7% compared to the pre-optimized state. An aircraft/engine integrated optimal control method is proposed for turbine-based combined cycle (TBCC) engines based on the Gauss pseudospectral method. The optimal flight trajectory and TBCC control law are obtained for a TBCC-powered aircraft, and the "thrust trap" that occurs during turbo-ramjet mode transition is further analyzed and suppressed. Results show that the aircraft goes through the mode transition phase using a "climb-dive" trajectory, which is a strategy of applying gravity-assist and temporarily reducing the drag. Furthermore, the TBCC engine adjusts at the quickest rate to minimize thrust loss. With the coupling of the trajectory and TBCC control law, the minimum thrust during the mode transition is only 23% of the thrust before the mode transition, suggesting the "thrust trap" phenomenon. By decreasing the mode transition time from 60 s to 15 s, the minimum thrust can only increase to 30%, and the "thrust trap" phenomenon cannot be effectively suppressed. When the operating speed range of the turbine engine increases from Ma2.5 to 2.9, the minimum thrust will reach 80%, and the "thrust trap" tends to level off. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Single-phase inverters with an output LC filter, can generate low distortion output voltages, which are suitable for uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems. The UPS system provides emergency power in the case of utility power failure, requiring high reliability and clean power. The sensorless control method is actually a soft-sensing technique, that reduces system cost, measurement-related losses, and, especially important for UPS systems, enhances the system reliability. This paper proposes a load current sensorless finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) scheme for a single-phase UPS inverter. A time varying observer is proposed, which offers the accurate estimation for individual components simultaneously in periodic load current signal, without subsequent complex calculations. Compared with another two typical sensorless methods (the low-pass filter and the Kalman filter), the proposed observer-based FCS-MPC strategy has smaller load current estimation error and lower output voltage distortion, under both linear and nonlinear loads. The theoretical analysis is verified through simulation and experiment. This research aims to investigate the potential of engineering waste marine silt stabilized by a self-developed stabilizing chemical additive called PZ-1 as a subgrade filler. PZ-1 is composed of calcium carbide residue (CCR) and plant ash (PA) under an optimal composition ratio determined by coupling particle swarm optimization with a support vector machine (PSO-SVM). The effect of curing agent dosage (wg), temperature (wT), number of dry-wet cycles (Ndw), and organic matter content (wo) on the micro-macro behavior of the stabilized silt were investigated via the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test, the scanning electron microscope (SEM) test, and the X-ray diffraction (XRD) test. The experimental results demonstrate a significant positive effect of PZ-1 on the unconfined compressive strength (qu) of marine engineering waste silt with curing agent contents of 0~8%. It was also found that strength improvement of the stabilized silt can be attributed to the formation of gelling substances such as C-S-H and calcite. The water resistance of the stabilized silt can be enhanced by increasing the dosage of the curing agent. Moreover, the organic matter content and ambient temperature have significant effects on the dry-wet cycle tolerance of solidified soil, among which temperature exhibits a more obvious impact. Geographically, the coastal zone is a unit where the marine system and the terrestrial system intersect and have the closest relationship with human survival and development. The study of coastal-zone land use change is therefore of great significance in promoting the sustainable development of coastal areas in terms of resources and environment. However, the relationship between urban land use change and distance from the coastline is indeterminate in current research. This paper aims to assess the spatial and temporal characteristics of coastal land use change with the sea–land gradient, as well as to reveal the role of coastal ecosystems. The indices of the dynamic index, net transfer matrix, and aggregation index were measured in different coastal buffer zones quantitatively. A case study of Dalian between 2000 and 2015 indicates that Dalian's urban construction land is distributed among the coastal zones with a high total and fast growth rate. The land use conversion direction varies significantly between different buffer zones, with [0, 2.5] km tilted mainly towards urban types and [10, Max] km tilted mainly towards rural areas. The aggregation of land use structure in Dalian fluctuated and increased year by year. As the distance from the coastline gets closer, land use is going to get more diverse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The electro-osmosis-combined-preloading method is considered very promising in soft soil improvement, while the uncertainty in the function mechanism has hindered its practical application. To explore the mechanism of the combined method, experiments concerning the single electro-osmosis method and the combined method were carried out using reclaimed sludge. Macroscopic and microscopic properties of the soil were explored and compared. Drainage, soil settlement, soil water content and soil pore structure were detected during the experiments. The total drainage and average settlement of the combined method were, respectively, 20.8% and 34.5% greater than that of the single electro-osmosis method. The average void ratio of soils treated by the combined method was 13.8% lower than that by the electro-osmosis method. Moreover, reduction rates of the soil water content are found higher than that of the apparent void ratio for each method. It can be concluded that the combined method had better performances, both from the macroscopic and microscopic views. Furthermore, a theoretical analysis demonstrated that soil was desaturated and the soil shrinkage volume was lower than the drained water volume during electro-osmosis. This is derived from the essence of electro-osmosis, which determines that considerable pores formerly occupied by drained water cannot be effectively compressed. The combined method can fully use the advantages of the single methods by active drainage through electro-osmosis and further compression of the soil skeleton through preloading. Background: Nitraria sibirica Pall. is one of the pioneer tree species in saline–alkali areas due to its extreme salt tolerance. However, the lack of information on its genome limits the further exploration of the molecular mechanisms in N. sibirica under salt stress. Methods: In this study, we used single-molecule real-time (SMRT) technology based on the PacBio Iso-Seq platform to obtain transcriptome data from N. sibirica under salt treatment for the first time, which is helpful for our in-depth analysis of the salt tolerance and molecular characteristics of N. sibirica. Results: Our results suggested that a total of 234,508 circular consensus sequences (CCSs) with a mean read length of 2121 bp were obtained from the 19.26 Gb raw data. Furthermore, based on transcript cluster analysis, 93,713 consensus isoforms were obtained, including 92,116 high-quality isoforms. After removing redundant sequences, 49,240 non-redundant transcripts were obtained from high-quality isoforms. A total of 37,261 SSRs, 1816 LncRNAs and 47,314 CDSs, of which 40,160 carried complete ORFs, were obtained. Based on our transcriptome data, we also analyzed the coding genes of H+-PPase, and the results of both bioinformatics and functional analyses indicated that the gene prediction via full-length transcripts obtained by SMRT technology is reliable and effective. In summary, our research data obtained by SMRT technology provides more reliable and accurate information for the further analysis of the regulatory network and molecular mechanism of N. sibirica under salt stress. An analytical three-dimensional slope reliability evaluation framework was developed in this work independent of use of numerical simulations. The slope stability analysis was necessarily carried out by utilizing an extended three-dimensional Morgenstern–Price method, which was characterized by analytical formulations and competitive computational efficiency. Incorporation of the presented stability analysis method into response surface methodology led to an effective slope reliability evaluation framework. The applicability and superiority of this framework was examined and validated using a real complicated landslide case reported in practice, and a hypothetical slope example widely adopted in the literature. The impact of correlation coefficients and probability distribution patterns on the slope reliability assessment results was further addressed to derive additional benefits of this framework. Setting times, as the early-age properties of cement-based materials, are important properties to ensure the quality and long-term performance of engineering structures. To determine the initial and final setting times of cementitious materials, the compressive wave velocity and shear wave velocity of six early-age mortar samples were monitored. Their time evolution curves of Young's modulus, shear modulus, bulk modulus, and Poisson's ratio were then calculated and analyzed. The signature times of the derivatives of the Poisson's ratio evolution curves correlate well with the initial and final setting times, and the remarkably high coefficient of determination values relative to the data from this study are higher than those presented in the current literature. The proposed derivative method on the Poisson's ratio evolution curve is as good as the derivative methods from vs. evolution curves used by prior studies for the estimation of both the initial and final setting times of the early-age properties of cement-based materials. The formation and subsequent disappearance of ettringite of low Poisson's ratio were postulated to cause the initial dip in the Poisson's ratio evolution curves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In various applications of airborne laser scanning (ALS), the classification of the point cloud is a basic and key step. It requires assigning category labels to each point, such as ground, building or vegetation. Convolutional neural networks have achieved great success in image classification and semantic segmentation, but they cannot be directly applied to point cloud classification because of the disordered and unstructured characteristics of point clouds. In this paper, we design a novel convolution operator to extract local features directly from unstructured points. Based on this convolution operator, we define the convolution layer, construct a convolution neural network to learn multi-level features from the point cloud, and obtain the category label of each point in an end-to-end manner. The proposed method is evaluated on two ALS datasets: the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) Vaihingen 3D Labeling benchmark and the 2019 IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) Data Fusion Contest (DFC) 3D dataset. The results show that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance for ALS point cloud classification, especially for the larger dataset DFC: we get an overall accuracy of 97.74% and a mean intersection over union (mIoU) of 0.9202, ranking in first place on the contest website. With the rapid expansion of high-rise and high-density buildings in urban areas, visual privacy has become one of the major concerns affecting human environmental quality. Evaluation of residents' visual exposure to outsiders has attracted more attention in the past decades. This paper presents a quantitative indicator; namely, the Potential Visual Exposure Index (PVEI), to assess visual privacy by introducing the damage of potential visual incursion from public spaces and neighborhoods in high-density residences. The method for computing the PVEI mainly consists of three steps: extracting targets and potential observers in a built environment, conducting intervisibility analysis and identifying visible sightlines, and integrating sightlines from building level and ground level to compute the PVEI value of each building opening. To validate the proposed PVEI, a case study with a sample building located at the center of Kowloon, Hong Kong, was evaluated. The results were in accordance with the common-sense notion that lower floors are subjected to poor visual privacy, and privacy is relatively well-preserved in upper floors in a building. However, residents of middle floors may suffer the worst circumstances with respect to visual privacy. Al matrix composite, reinforced with the in situ synthesized 3C–SiC, MgAl2O4, and MgO grains, was produced via the casting process using phenolic resin pyrolysis products in flash mode. The contents and microstructure of the composites' fracture characteristics were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Mechanical properties were tested by universal testing machine. Owing to the strong propulsion formed in turbulent flow in the pyrolysis process, nano-ceramic grains were formed in the resin pyrolysis process and simultaneously were homogeneously scattered in the alloy matrix. Thermodynamic calculation supported that the gas products, as carbon and oxygen sources, had a different chemical activity on in situ growth. In addition, ceramic (3C–SiC, MgAl2O4, and MgO) grains have discrepant contents. Resin pyrolysis in the molten alloy decreased oxide slag but increased pores in the alloy matrix. Tensile strength (142.6 ± 3.5 MPa) had no change due to the cooperative action of increased pores and fine grains; the bending and compression strength was increasing under increased contents of ceramic grains; the maximum bending strength was 378.2 MPa in 1.5% resin-added samples; and the maximum compression strength was 299.4 MPa. Lath-shaped Si was the primary effect factor of mechanical properties. The failure mechanism was controlled by transcrystalline rupture mechanism. We explain that the effects of the ceramic grains formed in the hot process at the condition of the resin exist in mold or other accessory materials. The Kenya Great Rift Valley (KGRV) region unique landscape comprises of mountainous terrain, large valley-floor lakes, and agricultural lands bordered by extensive Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs). The East Africa (EA) region has received high amounts of rainfall in the recent past as evidenced by the rising lake levels in the GRV lakes. In Kenya, few studies have quantified soil loss at national scales and erosion rates information on these GRV lakes' regional basins within the ASALs is lacking. This study used the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) model to estimate soil erosion rates between 1990 and 2015 in the Great Rift Valley region of Kenya which is approximately 84.5% ASAL. The mean erosion rates for both periods was estimated to be tolerable (6.26 t ha−1 yr−1 and 7.14 t ha−1 yr−1 in 1990 and 2015 respectively) resulting in total soil loss of 116 Mt yr−1 and 132 Mt yr−1 in 1990 and 2015 respectively. Approximately 83% and 81% of the erosive lands in KGRV fell under the low risk category (<10 t ha−1 yr−1) in 1990 and 2015 respectively while about 10% were classified under the top three conservation priority levels in 2015. Lake Nakuru basin had the highest erosion rate net change (4.19 t ha−1 yr−1) among the GRV lake basins with Lake Bogoria-Baringo recording annual soil loss rates >10 t ha−1 yr−1 in both years. The mountainous central parts of the KGRV with Andosol/Nitisols soils and high rainfall experienced a large change of land uses to croplands thus had highest soil loss net change (4.34 t ha−1 yr−1). In both years, forests recorded the lowest annual soil loss rates (<3.0 t ha−1 yr−1) while most of the ASAL districts presented erosion rates (<8 t ha−1 yr−1). Only 34% of all the protected areas were found to have erosion rates <10 t ha−1 yr−1 highlighting the need for effective anti-erosive measures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Heritage documentation is implemented by digitally recording historical artifacts for the conservation and protection of these cultural heritage objects. As efficient spatial data acquisition tools, laser scanners have been widely used to collect highly accurate three-dimensional (3D) point clouds without damaging the original structure and the environment. To ensure the integrity and quality of the collected data, field inspection (i.e., on-spot checking the data quality) should be carried out to determine the need for additional measurements (i.e., extra laser scanning for areas with quality issues such as data missing and quality degradation). To facilitate inspection of all collected point clouds, especially checking the quality issues in overlaps between adjacent scans, all scans should be registered together. Thus, a point cloud registration method that is able to register scans fast and robustly is required. To fulfill the aim, this study proposes an efficient probabilistic registration for free-form cultural heritage objects by integrating the proposed principal direction descriptor and curve constraints. We developed a novel shape descriptor based on a local frame of principal directions. Within the frame, its density and distance feature images were generated to describe the shape of the local surface. We then embedded the descriptor into a probabilistic framework to reject ambiguous matches. Spatial curves were integrated as constraints to delimit the solution space. Finally, a multi-view registration was used to refine the position and orientation of each scan for the field inspection. Comprehensive experiments show that the proposed method was able to perform well in terms of rotation error, translation error, robustness, and runtime and outperformed some commonly used approaches. An integrated analysis method for a rocket-augmented turbine-based combined cycle (TBCC) engine is proposed based on the trajectory optimization method of the Gauss pseudospectral. The efficiency and energy of the vehicles with and without the rocket are analyzed. Introducing an appropriate rocket to assist the TBCC-powered vehicle will reduce the total energy consumption of drag, and increase the vehicle efficiency in the transonic and the mode transition. It results in an increase in the total efficiency despite a reduction in engine efficiency. Therefore, introducing a rocket as the auxiliary power is not only a practical solution to enable flight over a wide-speed range when the TBCC is incapable but also probably an economical scheme when the the TBCC meets the requirements of thrust. When the vehicle drag is low, the rocket works for a short time and its optimal relative thrust is small. Thus, the TBCC combined with a booster rocket will be a more simple and suitable scheme. When the vehicle drag is high, the operating time of the rocket is long and the optimal relative thrust is large. The specific impulse has a significant impact on the flight time and the total fuel consumption. The buzz phenomenon of a typical supersonic inlet is analyzed on the basis of numerical simulations and duct acoustic theory. Considering that the choked inlet could be treated as a duct with one end closed, a one-dimensional (1D) mathematical model based on the duct acoustic theory is proposed to describe the periodic pressure oscillation of the little buzz and the big buzz. The results of the acoustic model agree well with that of the numerical simulations and the experimental data. It could verify that the dominated oscillation patterns of the little buzz and the big buzz are closely related to the first and second resonant mode of the standing wave, respectively. The discrepancies between the numerical simulation and the ideal acoustic model might be attributed to the viscous damping in the fluid oscillation system. In order to explore the damping, a small perturbation jet is introduced to trigger the resonance of the buzz system and the nonlinear amplification effect of resonance might be helpful to estimate the damping. Through the comparison between the linear acoustic model and the nonlinear simulation, the calculated pressure oscillation damping of the little buzz and the big buzz are 0.33 and 0.16, which could be regarded as an estimation of real damping. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous small RNAs that play a crucial role in plant growth, development, and environmental stress responses. Reaumuria soongorica is a typical halophyte that is widely distributed in saline–alkali desert regions. Under salt stress, R. soongorica can complete germination, a critical biological process in the life cycle of seed plants. To identify miRNAs and predict target mRNAs involved in seed germination during salt stress, nine small-RNA libraries were constructed and analyzed from R. soongorica seeds treated with various concentrations of NaCl. We also obtained transcriptome data under the same treatment conditions. Further analysis identified 88 conserved miRNAs representing 25 defined families and discovered 13 novel miRNAs from nine libraries. A co-expression analysis was performed on the same samples to identify putative miRNA–mRNA interactions that were responsive to salt stress. A comparative analysis of expression during germination under 273 (threshold) and 43 mM (optimal) NaCl treatments identified 13 differentially expressed miRNAs and 23 corresponding target mRNAs, while a comparison between 43 mM NaCl and non-salt-stress conditions uncovered one differentially expressed miRNA and one corresponding target mRNA. These results provide basic data for further study of molecular mechanisms involved in the germination of salt-stressed R. soongorica seeds, and also provide a reference for the improvement of salt tolerance during plant germination. Metamodels have become increasingly popular in the field of energy sources because of their significant advantages in reducing the computational cost of time-consuming tasks. Lacking the prior knowledge of actual physical systems, it may be difficult to find an appropriate metamodel in advance for a new task. A favorite way of overcoming this difficulty is to construct an ensemble metamodel by assembling two or more individual metamodels. Motivated by the existing works, a novel metamodeling approach for building the ensemble metamodels is proposed in this paper. By thoroughly exploring the characteristics of regression-type and interpolation-type metamodels, some useful information is extracted from the feedback of the regression-type metamodels to further improve the functional fitting capability of the ensemble metamodels. Four types of ensemble metamodels were constructed by choosing four individual metamodels. Common benchmark problems are chosen to compare the performance of the individual and ensemble metamodels. The results show that the proposed metamodeling approach reduces the risk of selecting the worst individual metamodel and improves the accuracy of the used individual metamodels. The buzz phenomenon of a typical supersonic inlet is analyzed using the unsteady Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulation and proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method. The dominant flow patterns and characteristics of the buzzed flow are obtained by decoupling the computed pressure field into spatial and temporal sub-parts based on the POD method. The supersonic inlet buzz phenomenon could be approximated as a product of decoupled temporal and spatial terms, and the one-dimensional (1D) mathematical model is therefore proposed. The standard deviations of the unsteady pressure fields from both the numerical simulation and the model prediction are compared. The limited discrepancy can be observed, and the good agreement validates the credibility of the proposed 1D model. The numerical simulation and the 1D model prediction are presented to explore the unsteady-jet control with a small perturbation. The results of the 1D model and the numerical simulation achieve good agreements with each other in terms of the overall trend. Finally, POD modal energy is employed to analyze the buzz suppression mechanism. When the jet frequency is identical to the dominant frequency of the buzz and the jet phase is opposite to the oscillation phase of the captured mass flow, the buzz suppression could be more efficient. The buzz suppression mechanism could be explained in two aspects. For one thing, the complex flow structure is suppressed and the first average modal energy in the inlet is increased. Archaeological sites are facing serious threats from environmental changes in the background of urban sprawl. More efforts are needed to enhance the cognition of human–environment interactions for better conservation. Under the traditional geomantic view, the environmental preference involved was presented to guide ancient life. In this study, we analyzed the edge effect and network structure of two periods in an ecological transition zone where the ancient sites were located. From the cases of Gouzhang and Yinxian, the separability of edge intensity indicated the different site selection patterns because of the discrepancy of patch fragmentation and ecological structure. Additionally, the different trends of the edge effect were thought to be related to the complexity of the ecological network. Besides that, the ancient cities located in or around the high-centrality terrain in the network of closed space could have provided the convenience of accessing living materials from early ecosystems. In practice, the comprehensive methods based on geomantic and ecological analysis proved effective when used to explore possible areas of the undiscovered archaeological sites. What is more important is that traditional environmental perceptions could be integrated into a scientific system of the ecological landscape and contribute more to archaeological research and the study of ancient culture. Driven by the continuous demand for system integration and device miniaturization, integrating multiple diversified functions into a single metasurface hybridized with the tunable metaparticle is highly demanding at terahertz (THz) range. However, up to now, because of the limitation of the tunable metaparticle at terahertz range, most of the metasurfaces feature a single function only or process similar functionalities at a single frequency. A reconfigurable multifunctional metasurface which can realize the switch of transmission and reflection and manipulate the linearized polarization state of electromagnetic waves simultaneously over a controllable terahertz frequency range based on the vanadium dioxide was designed for the first time in the paper. The numerical result demonstrates the validity of the appropriately designed metasurface. Simulation results show that the reconfigurable and multifunctional performance of this metasurface can be acquired over 1.59 THz to 1.74 THz without re-optimizing or re-fabricating structures, which effectively extends the operating frequencies. The proposed metasurface holds potential for electromagnetic wave manipulation and this study can motivate the realization of the wideband multifunctional metasurface and the software-driven reconfigurable metasurface at terahertz frequencies. Viewing the trend of miniaturization and integration in modern electronic device design, a reconfigurable multi-functional graphene-based metasurface is proposed in this paper. By virtue of the reconfigurability of reflection patterns, this metasurface is able to independently manipulate orthogonal linearly polarized terahertz wave. The building blocks of the proposed metasurface are series of graphene-strips-based unit-cells. Each unit-cell consists of two orthogonal graphene strips and a grounded substrate, which has anisotropic responses for each of orthogonal polarizations (x-polarized and y-polarized waves). The reflection phases of both x- and y-polarized waves can be controlled independently through separate electrical tuning. Based on the proposed metasurface, functionalities including beam splitting, beam deflecting, and linear-to-circular polarization converting using a shared aperture are numerically demonstrated and analyzed. Simulation results demonstrate excellent performance, which is consistent with the theorized expectations. This work paves the way for enhancing the miniaturization of modern electronic/optical devices and potentially has important applications in the next-generation information systems for communication, sensing, and imaging. Three kinds of multifunctional graphene metasurfaces based on Pancharatnam–Berry (PB) phase cells are proposed and numerically demonstrated to control a reflected wave’s spin angular momentum (SAM) and orbital angular momentum (OAM) in the terahertz (THz) regime. Each proposed metasurface structure is composed of an array of graphene strips with different deviation angles and a back-grounded quartz substrate. In order to further help readers have a deeper insight into the graphene-based metasurfaces, a detailed design strategy is also provided. With the aid of the designed graphene elements, the proposed metasurfaces can achieve the full 360° range of phase coverage and provide manipulation of SAM and OAM of a circularly polarized (CP) wave at will. More importantly, simultaneous control of these two momentums can also be realized, and in order to demonstrate this function, a THz spin-controlled OAM beam generator with diverse topological charges is created, which can provide one more degree of freedom to improve the channel capability without increasing the bandwidth compared to a linearly polarized (LP) OAM beam. A wide-band and high gain circularly polarized (CP) graphene-based reflectarray operating in the THz regime is proposed and theoretically investigated in this paper. The proposed reflectarray consists of a THz CP source and several graphene-based unit-cells. Taking advantages of the Pancharatnam Berry (PB) phase principle, the graphene-based unit-cell is capable of realizing a tunable phase range of 360° in a wide-band (1.4–1.7 THz) by unit-cell rotating, overcoming the restriction of intrinsic narrow-band resonance in graphene. Therefore, this graphene-based unit-cell exhibits superior bandwidth and phase tunability to its previous counterparts. To demonstrate this, a wide-band (1.4–1.7 THz) focusing metasurface based on the proposed unit-cell that exhibits excellent focusing effect was designed. Then, according to the reversibility of the optical path, a CP reflectarray was realized by placing a wide-band CP THz source at the focal point of the metasurface. Numerical simulation demonstrates that this reflectarray can achieve a stable high gain up to 15 dBic and an axial ratio around 2.1 dB over the 1.4–1.7 THz band. The good radiation performance of the proposed CP reflectarray, as demonstrated, underlines its suitability for the THz communication applications. Moreover, the design principle of this graphene-based reflectarray with a full 360° phase range tunable unit-cells provides a new pathway to design high-performance CP reflectarray in the THz regime. Objective: We want to know the attitudes and behaviors towards UV protection and we want to analyze the difference between different Chinese demographic groups in this study., Methods: A community-based study was undertaken in Shanghai from October 2009 to January 2010. The participants, ages 20-60 years old, were screened by cluster sampling and were investigated through interviews at their own homes. Personal basic information and questions pertaining to their knowledge and attitudes towards sunlight and sun protective activities were included in the questionnaire., Results: We completed 5964 questionnaires (2794 men and 3170 women). Eighty-six percent of the respondents belonged to Fitzpatrick skin type IV. Knowledge about UV-induced risks was known by more than half of the participants. However, only one-third of the participants thought they needed sun protection in winter and indoors or in vehicles, and 27% of the participants acknowledged tanning was not favorable. The attitudes towards sun exposure varied greatly, showing significant differences based on gender, age, socioeconomic groups and skin type groups (p<0.05). Fifty-five percent of the participants never use an umbrella under sunlight, only 26.5% of the respondents wear hats, and 21.3% of the participants applied sunscreen. Females and individuals of a younger age and higher education level were more likely to perform sun-protective behaviors than males and those of an older age and lower education level (p<0.001)., Conclusion: There is a deficit in the use of sun protection existing in our surveyed Chinese population, especially in males and lower socioeconomic population, which could allow for planning prevention campaigns and exploring sun-preventive products.
