In order to measure wheat yield and wheat spike phenotypes, the grain number of wheat spikes is counted manually at present, but acquiring the grain number of wheat spikes is laborious and time-consuming. Counting the grain number of wheat spikes with an image processing method is promising, yet the application of this method is flawed due to its low accuracy. In this work, images of wheat spikes were collected and processed with technical procedures, including image cropping, image graying, histogram equalization, image binarization, eroding operation, removing small objects, filling image holes, revolving vertical spikes, cutting off stems, and removing stems. Wheat stems in binary images were eliminated by the sum pixels method, and the morphological characteristic parameters of the image areas of wheat spikes and lengths of wheat spike axes were calculated. Mathematical models relating the image areas of wheat spikes and lengths of the wheat spike axes to the grain number were established, and the mathematical models were verified. The results showed that the characteristic parameters of the image areas of wheat spikes and the lengths of the wheat spike axes for the spike images were linear relative to the grain number, and the maximum determination coefficients R2 were 0.9336 and 0.9012, respectively. The maximum determination coefficients R2 for the practical and predicted grain numbers were 0.9552 and 0.9369, respectively, and the minimum average absolute error was 2.3, while the average relative error for the mathematical models was 5.65%. The mathematical models relating the image areas of wheat spikes and the lengths of the wheat spike axes to the grain number were practical and accurate, and the mathematical model comparing the image area of wheat spikes and the grain number was superior to that comparing the length of the wheat spike axis and the grain number. The wavefront reconstruction is a crucial step in determining the performance of wavefront detection instruments. The wavefront reconstruction algorithm is primarily evaluated in three dimensions: accuracy, speed, and noise immunity. In this paper, we propose a hybrid zonal reconstruction algorithm that introduces slope and curvature information in the diagonal, anti-diagonal, horizontal, and vertical directions by dividing the neighbor sampling points into subregions in groups of four. By canceling the same parameters in integration equations, an algorithm using multi-directional slope–curvature information is achieved with only two sets of integration equations in each subregion, reducing the processing time. Simulation experiments show that the relative root-mean-square reconstruction error of this algorithm is improved by about 4 orders of magnitude compared with existing algorithms that use multi-directional slope information or slope–curvature information alone. Compared with the hybrid multi-directional slope–curvature algorithm, the proposed algorithm can reduce computation time by about 50% as well as provide better noise immunity and reconstruction accuracy. The efficiency of magnetic seed coagulation (MSC) with pH adjustment by NaOH and Ca(OH)2 as a pretreatment for high-strength natural rubber industrial wastewater (NRIWW) was compared in this study. The high content of suspended solids (SSs) and other inhibitory substances of NRIWW is a primary issue which affects its subsequent secondary and tertiary treatment processes. The MSC process with polyaluminum chloride (PAC), anionic polymer (polyacrylamide—PAM)), and magnetic seeds (MS) (ferric oxide (Fe3O4)) was proven to be a cost-effective pretreatment of NRIWW, and Ca(OH)2 showed improved pretreatment performance, with turbidity, COD, and TSS removals of 95%, 56%, and 64%, respectively. Sedimentation was enhanced from 30 min by conventional coagulation to less than 5 min by the MSC. The organic components of NRIWW reacted with MS to generate Fe–OH/Fe–OH+ linkages through processes of surface complexing and hydrogen bonding. According to fractal analysis, the MSC process optimized with Ca(OH)2 produces less complex flocs that are uniform and densely packed. Additionally, MS served as an adsorbent and promoted the development of magnetic flocs by boosting their density and size. Simple Summary: The copulation duration is one of the important behavioral traits, as it has been proven to be directly correlated with reproductive fitness in insects. Comprehensive knowledge of the factors influencing the copulation duration is often essential for the mass production of natural insect enemies. This study sought to evaluate the role of the copulation duration on reproductive output and to assess the variation in the copulation duration under various physiological and ecological conditions in a laboratory setting, utilizing an ectoparasitic beetle, Dastarcus helophoroides, as an experimental model. We found that the copulation duration was highly variable and positively correlated with reproductive fitness. Multiple factors, including body size, mating history, kinship, sex ratio, mating sequence, feeding status, ambient temperature, photoperiod, and time of day, acted on the copulation duration. These results not only augment our understanding of the factors influencing the reproductive fitness of this ectoparasite but may also help to enhance their reproductive potential in a mass-rearing scheme. The gregarious ectoparasitic beetle Dastarcus helophoroides (Fairmaire) is considered a primary biocontrol agent for controlling several cerambycid pests in East Asian countries. A thorough study of reproductive behavior is a prerequisite for the mass production of natural insect predators. Nonetheless, little attention has been given to this ectoparasitic beetle. We performed a series of trials to assess whether the adult copulation duration, a key behavioral trait, is differentially influenced by physiological and ecological factors, including body size, mating history, kinship, sex ratio, mating sequence, feeding status, ambient temperature, photoperiod, and time of day. Additionally, the effect of the copulation duration on the reproductive output of this beetle was also investigated. The results indicated that the copulation duration varied considerably, ranging from 1.12 min to 16.40 min and lasting for an average of 9.11 ± 0.12 min. Females with longer copulations laid more eggs and had a greater proportion of eggs hatched. Medium-sized individuals copulated significantly longer than small- and large-sized individuals. The copulation durations were significantly longer when both sexes experienced an asymmetric mating history than when both sexes experienced a symmetric mating history. Inbred couples copulated significantly longer than outbred couples. In terms of the adult sex ratio, increasing the density of females (polygamous group) or males (polyandrous group) led to significantly longer copulation durations than those in the monogamous group. The copulation durations gradually decreased with increasing the mating sequence and temperature. Food-absence couples copulated significantly longer than food-presence couples. The mean copulation duration of the scotophase was significantly longer than that of the photophase. These results demonstrate that all of the analyzed factors emerge as important factors influencing the copulation duration, ultimately affecting the reproductive outputs in this ectoparasitic beetle. Five artemisinin bivalent ligands molecules 4a–4e were designed, synthesized, and confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and low-resolution mass spectrometry, and the bioactivities of the target compounds were investigated against four human tumor cell lines in vitro, including BGC-823, HepG-2, MCF-7, and HCT-116. The results showed 4a, 4d, and 4e exhibited significantly tumor cell inhibitory activity compared with the artemisinin and dihydroartemisinin; compound 4e has good biological activity inhibiting BGC-823 with an IC50 value of 8.30 μmol/L. Then, the good correlations with biological results were validated by molecular docking through the established bivalent ligands multi-target model, which showed that 4e could bind well with the antitumor protein MMP-9. Spinal cord injuries (SCI) can result in sensory and motor dysfunctions, which were long considered permanent. Recent advancement in electrical neuromodulation has been proven to restore sensorimotor function in people with SCI. These stimulation protocols, however, were mostly invasive, expensive, and difficult to implement. In this study, transcutaneous electrical stimulation (tES) was used to restore over-ground walking of an individual with 21 years of chronic paralysis from a cervical SCI. After a total of 66 weeks of rehabilitation training with tES, which included standing, functional reaching, reclined sit-up, treadmill walking, and active biking, significant improvement in lower-limb volitional movements and overall light touch sensation were shown as measured by the International Standards for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury (ISNCSCI) score. By the end of the study, the participant could walk in a 4-m walking test with the aid of a walking frame and ankle–foot orthoses. Accurate calculation of the electromagnetic force distribution of transformer windings under different loads and fault conditions is of great significance for transformer maintenance, condition evaluation and life prediction. Due to the influence of offshore wind power systems, offshore wind power transformers have high harmonic content and large changes in load rates, which can easily cause the coil destabilization, winding deformation or even damage because of the uneven distribution of the electromagnetic force. To improve the accuracy of electromagnetic force calculation, this paper proposes a fractional order numerical method. First, a three-dimensional axisymmetric transformer model and a symmetrical lumped parameter equivalent circuit model are established, respectively, based on field-circuit coupling. Second, the fractional order approximation of circuit components is realized by using the improved Oustaloup filter. In the fractional order model, the transformer is replaced by the lumped parameter equivalent circuit model. Third, as in the calculation process for integer order electromagnetic force, the integer order current has a large error, and the current waveform does not match the actual power frequency. The fractional order current and electromagnetic force at the 0.9 order are closer to the rated value. Finally, the effects of different load rates, three-phase short circuits and harmonic conditions are studied with the fractional order model. Compared with the traditional integer order finite element electromagnetic model, the fractional order equivalent circuit model established in this paper is more accurate and suitable for electromagnetic force calculation. Vitiligo is a common primary, limited or generalized skin depigmentation disorder. Its pathogenesis is complex, multifactorial and unclear. For this reason, few animal models can simulate the onset of vitiligo, and studies of drug interventions are limited. Studies have found that there may be a pathophysiological connection between mental factors and the development of vitiligo. At present, the construction methods of the vitiligo model mainly include chemical induction and autoimmune induction against melanocytes. Mental factors are not taken into account in existing models. Therefore, in this study, mental inducement was added to the monobenzone (MBEH)-induced vitiligo model. We determined that chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) inhibited the melanogenesis of skin. MBEH inhibited melanin production without affecting the behavioral state of mice, but mice in the MBEH combined with CUMS (MC) group were depressed and demonstrated increased depigmentation of the skin. Further analysis of metabolic differences showed that all three models altered the metabolic profile of the skin. In summary, we successfully constructed a vitiligo mouse model induced by MBEH combined with CUMS, which may be better used in the evaluation and study of vitiligo drugs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Diabetes and periodontitis are the most prevalent chronic diseases, and they influence each other's progression. Only a few studies have shown the association between diabetes and mild periodontitis. We aimed to investigate the relationship between well-controlled periodontitis and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in patients with diabetes. This retrospective study investigated 150 Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes treated with supportive periodontal therapy (SPT). Medical histories of diabetes and periodontal therapy were collected, and a multiple linear regression analysis was performed to determine their association. The patients included 67 (44.7%) males and 83 (55.3%) females, with a mean age of 68.1 (standard deviation = 10.5) years. Forty-four (29.3%) patients were treated for diabetes, and the mean HbA1c was 6.7% (0.7). Oral status was 23.3 (5.1) for the number of teeth, 2.5 mm (0.4) for mean probing pocket depth (PPD), and 163.9 mm2 (181.3) for the periodontal inflamed surface area (PISA). The multiple regression analysis showed a significant association between mean PPD (β = 0.38, p = 0.03) and HbA1c in patients with mild diabetes but not in severe cases. These results suggest that the diagnostic indices for periodontitis used to assess the association between periodontitis and HbA1c would be determined based on the severity of periodontitis and type 2 diabetes. Simple Summary: The population genomic study of seven populations of Bellamya aeruginosa across three river systems in China was conducted by specific-locus amplified fragment sequencing (SLAF-seq). A clear division was found among populations from the Yellow River basin and the Pearl River basin, as well as population YC from the Yangtze River basin using the SNPs data. However, there existed no distinct population structure using the mitochondrial DNA. Anthropogenic translocation from the Yangtze River to the Pearl River basin and the passive dispersion from the Yangtze River basin to the Yellow River basin by flooding have weakened the phylogeographic pattern of B. aeruginosa. These results provide useful guidance for the effective selective breeding of Bellamya, which is very important for the development of the industry of LZRSRN. Clarifying the genetic structure can facilitate the understanding of a species evolution history. Bellamya is an economically and ecologically important freshwater snail for fish, birds and even humans. Population genetic structures of the Bellamya species, however, were unknown in previous studies. Population genomics approaches with tens to hundreds of thousands of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) make it possible to detect previously unidentified structures. The population genomic study of seven populations of B. aeruginosa across three river systems (Yellow River, Yangtze River and Pearl River) in China was conducted by SLAF-seq. SLAF-seq obtained a total of 4737 polymorphisms SLAF-tags and 25,999 high-consistency genome-wide SNPs. The population genetic structure showed a clear division among populations from the Yellow River basin (YH and WL) and the Pearl River basin (QSH and LB), as well as population YC from the Yangtze River basin using the SNPs data. However, there existed no distinct population structure using the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). The anthropogenic translocation from the Yangtze River basin to the Pearl River basin and the passive dispersion from the Yangtze River basin to the Yellow River basin by flooding have weakened the phylogeographic pattern of B. aeruginosa. The rubidium leaching process from biotite generates a large amount of waste materials that should ideally be reused for heavy metal ion adsorption so as not to create environmental problems. Ferric oxide/mesoporous silica (FO/MS) is a novel adsorbent used for heavy metal ion removal with a high removal capacity of Pb2+ (143.47 mg/g within 60 min) that was prepared for the first time by comprehensively utilizing both rubidium-containing biotite leaching residues and wastewater. The incorporation of mesoporous silica prepared by leaching residues could provide a porous framework and channel for depositing ferric oxide. Mesoporous channels have a high specific surface area that improves the adsorption activity and capacity of the material. Additionally, in a pH study, the adsorptive thermodynamic and dynamic analyses, as well as XPS and FTIR analyses, verified the adsorption properties involved in surface complexing and electrostatic binding. The surface complexation process mainly was the interaction of Pb2+ with surface hydroxyl groups. This work provided a novel and effective strategy for preparing waste solid-based heavy metal ion adsorption and expanded technologies for treating acid leaching wastewater. Since the 21st century, crisis events have been frequent and normalized globally, and improving resilience has become the key for the tourism industry to cope with various uncertainty risks. To reveal the reality of the economic resilience of tourism in China, this study employed the autoregressive integrated moving average model (ARIMA) to construct a counterfactual function and integrated with the peaks-over-threshold (POT) model and geographical detector model to evaluate the spatiotemporal evolution and influencing factors of the economic resilience of tourism in China from the resistance and recoverability perspective, with a view to providing a reference for consolidating the resilience of the economic system of tourism in China and promoting the sustainable development of its tourism economy. The results showed that the economic resilience of tourism in China can be divided into four types—robust, self-reliant, laissez-faire, and fragile—based on a baseline resistance of −0.361 and recoverability of 0.342. Under different contraction–recovery cycles, the resistance and recoverability of China's tourism economy have been progressively improved, transforming from the centralized model to the discrete model, from a fragile to a self-reliant type. The type of economic resilience of tourism in China exhibited a clustered contiguous development trend, with obvious zonal distribution characteristics and self-reliant tourism economic resilience areas dominating, but most areas have not yet formed stable economic resilience in their tourism sector. The ecological environment quality, government management ability, and technological innovation level were the main factors affecting the economic resilience of tourism in China. The 5-HT2A serotonin receptor (HTR2A) has been reported to be involved in the serotonin- or serotonin receptor 2A agonist-induced melanogenesis in human melanoma cells. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying HTR2A in regulating melanogenesis remain poorly understood. In this research, cultured mouse melanoma cell line B16F10, human skin, and zebrafish embryos were used to elucidate the downstream signaling of HTR2A in regulating melanogenesis and to verify the potential application of HTR2A in the treatment of pigment-associated cutaneous diseases. We demonstrated that HTR2A antagonists (AT1015 and ketanserin) attenuated the melanogenesis induction of serotonin in both mouse melanoma cells and zebrafish embryos. The agonists of HTR2A (DOI and TCB-2) increased melanin synthesis and transfer in B16F10 cells, human skin tissue, and zebrafish embryos. Furthermore, the HTR2A agonists increased the expression of proteins related to melanosome organization and melanocyte dendrites to facilitate the melanocyte migration and melanosome transport. HTR2A antagonists and genetic knockout of zebrafish htr2aa (the homologue of mammalian HTR2A gene) were also used to clarify that HTR2A mediates serotonin and DOI in regulating melanogenesis. Finally, through small scale screening of the candidate downstream pathway, we demonstrated that HTR2A mediates the melanogenesis induction of its ligands by activating the PKA/CREB signaling pathway. In this research, we further confirmed that HTR2A is a crucial protein to mediate melanocyte function. Meanwhile, this research supports that HTR2A could be designed as a drug target for the development of chemicals to treat cutaneous diseases with melanocytes or melanogenesis abnormality. Surgery is the current first choice for oral cancer treatment. Intensity-modulated radiation therapy, molecular targeted drugs, and immune checkpoint inhibitors are still used as adjuvant therapy for advanced cancer. In addition, postoperative rehabilitation and multidisciplinary treatment have also been developed in recent years. Multidisciplinary team approaches and supportive care in oral cancer treatment reportedly shorten the time to treatment and improve outcomes. Although there is enough evidence confirming the role of oral and maxillofacial surgeons, dentists, and dental hygienists in supportive care in oral cancer treatment, there are very few systematic studies. In particular, oral health management is a concept that encompasses oral function management, oral hygiene management, and oral care during oral cancer treatment. Three new asperentin-type compounds, 6-O-α-D-ribosylasperentin (1) and 6-O-α-D--ribosyl-8-O-methylasperentin (2) and 5-hydroxyl-6-O-methylasperentin (3), along with asperentin (4) and its known analogues (5-9), were isolated from a halotolerant Aspergillus sp. strain F00785, an endotrophic fungus from marine alga. Their structures were determined using extensive NMR and HRESIMS spectroscopic analysis, including the X-ray crystallographic data for the assignment of the absolute configurations of compound 9. The DNA repair gene X-ray cross-complementary group 4 (XRCC4), an important caretaker of the overall genome stability, is thought to play a major role in human tumorigenesis. We investigated the association between an important polymorphic variant of this gene at codon 247 (rs373409) and diffusely infiltrating astrocytoma (DIA) risk and prognosis. This hospital-based case-control study investigated this association in the Guangxi population. In total, 242 cases with DIA and 358 age-, sex-, and race-matched healthy controls were genotyped using TaqMan-PCR technique. We found a significant difference in the frequency of XRCC4 genotypes between cases and controls. Compared with the homozygote of XRCC4 codon 247 Ala alleles (XRCC4-AA), the genotypes of XRCC4 codon 247 Ser alleles (namely XRCC4-AS or -SS) increased DIA risk (odds ratios [OR], 1.82 and 2.89, respectively). Furthermore, XRCC4 polymorphism was correlated with tumor dedifferentiation of DIA (r = 0.261, p < 0.01). Additionally, this polymorphism modified the overall survival of DIA patients (the median survival times were 26, 14, and 8 months for patients with XRCC4-AA, -AS, and -SS, respectively). Like tumor grade, XRCC4 codon 247 polymorphism was an independent prognostic factor influencing the survival of DIA. Four new citrinin derivatives, including two citrinin dimers and two citrinin monomer derivatives, were isolated and identified from a marine-derived fungal strain Penicillium sp. ML226 along with six known related compounds. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic and chemical methods. Depression is the most frequent affective disorder and is the leading cause of disability worldwide. In order to screen antidepressants and explore molecular mechanisms, a variety of animal models were used in experiments, but there is no reliable high-throughput screening method. Zebrafish is a common model organism for mental illness such as depression. In our research, we established chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) models in C57BL/6 mice and zebrafish; the similarities in behavior and pathology suggest that zebrafish can replace rodents as high-throughput screening organisms. Stress mice (ip., 1 mg/kg/d, 3 days) and zebrafish (10 mg/L, 20 min) were treated with reserpine. As a result, reserpine caused depression-like behavior in mice, which was consistent with the results of the CUMS mice model. Additionally, reserpine reduced the locomotor ability and exploratory behavior of zebrafish, which was consistent with the results of the CUMS zebrafish model. Further analysis of the metabolic differences showed that the reserpine-induced zebrafish depression model was similar to the reserpine mice model and the CUMS mice model in the tyrosine metabolism pathway. The above results showed that the reserpine-induced depression zebrafish model was similar to the CUMS model from phenotype to internal metabolic changes and can replace the CUMS model for antidepressants screening. Moreover, the results from this model were obtained in a short time, which can shorten the cycle of drug screening and achieve high-throughput screening. The encapsulation of therapeutic agents into nano-based drug delivery system for cancer treatment has received considerable attention in recent years. Advancements in nanotechnology provide an opportunity for efficient delivery of anticancer drugs. The unique properties of nanoparticles not only allow cancer-specific drug delivery by inherent passive targeting phenomena and adopting active targeting strategies, but also improve the pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of the loaded drugs, leading to enhanced therapeutic efficacy and safety compared to conventional treatment modalities. Small molecule drugs are the most widely used anticancer agents at present, while biological macromolecules, such as therapeutic antibodies, peptides and genes, have gained increasing attention. Therefore, this review focuses on the recent achievements of novel nano-encapsulation in targeted drug delivery. A comprehensive introduction of intelligent delivery strategies based on various nanocarriers to encapsulate small molecule chemotherapeutic drugs and biological macromolecule drugs in cancer treatment will also be highlighted. Both poor cooling methods and complex heat dissipation lead to prominent asymmetry in transformer temperature distribution. Both the operating life and load capacity of a power transformer are closely related to the winding hotspot temperature. Realizing accurate prediction of the hotspot temperature of transformer windings is the key to effectively preventing thermal faults in transformers, thus ensuring the reliable operation of transformers and accurately predicting transformer operating lifetimes. In this paper, a hot spot temperature prediction method is proposed based on the transformer operating parameters through the particle filter optimization support vector regression model. Based on the monitored transformer temperature, load rate, transformer cooling type, and ambient temperature, the hotspot temperature of a dry-type transformer can be predicted by a support vector regression method. The hyperparameters of the support vector regression are dynamically optimized here according to the particle filter to improve the optimization accuracy. The validity and accuracy of the proposed method are verified by comparing the proposed method with a traditional support vector regression method based on the real operating data of a 35 kV dry-type transformer. To investigate a possible methodology of exploiting herbal medicine and design polytherapy for the treatment of skin depigmentation disorder, we have made use of Vernonia anthelmintica (L.) Willd., a traditional Chinese herbal medicine that has been proven to be effective in treating vitiligo. Here, we report that the extract of Vernonia anthelmintica (L.) Willd. effectively enhances melanogenesis responses in B16F10. In its compound library, we found three ingredients (butin, caffeic acid and luteolin) also have the activity of promoting melanogenesis in vivo and in vitro. They can reduce the accumulation of ROS induced by hydrogen peroxide and inflammatory response induced by sublethal concentrations of copper sulfate in wild type and green fluorescent protein (GFP)-labeled leukocytes zebrafish larvae. The overall objective of the present study aims to identify which compatibility proportions of the medicines may be more effective in promoting pigmentation. We utilized the D-optimal response surface methodology to optimize the ratio among three molecules. Combining three indicators of promoting melanogenesis, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capacities, we get the best effect of butin, caffeic acid and luteolin at the ratio (butin:caffeic acid:luteolin = 7.38:28.30:64.32) on zebrafish. Moreover, the effect of melanin content recovery in the best combination is stronger than that of the monomer, which suggests that the three compounds have a synergistic effect on inducing melanogenesis. After simply verifying the result, we performed in situ hybridization on whole-mount zebrafish embryos to further explore the effects of multi-drugs combination on the proliferation and differentiation of melanocytes and the expression of genes (tyr, mitfa, dct, kit) related to melanin synthesis. The tumor microenvironment has been recently recognized as a critical contributor to cancer progression and anticancer therapy-resistance. Cyclophosphamide (CTX) is a cytotoxic agent commonly used in clinics for the treatment of cancer. Previous reports demonstrated that CTX given at low continuous doses, known as metronomic schedule, mainly targets endothelial cells and circulating Tregs with unknown mechanisms. Here, we investigated the antitumor activity of two different metronomic schedules of CTX along with their corresponding MTD regimen and further explored their effect on immune function and tumor microenvironment. Toxicity evaluation was monitored by overall survival rate, weight loss, and histopathological analysis. A nude mouse model of Lewis lung cancer was established to assess the anti-metastatic effects of CTX in vivo. CD4+, CD8+, and CD4+CD25+FoxP3 T cells were selected by flow cytometry analysis. Low and continuous administration of CTX was able to restore immune function via increase of CD4+/CD8+ T cells and depletion of T regulatory cells, not only in circulatory and splenic compartments, but also at the tumor site. Low-dose CTX also reduced myofibroblasts, accompanied with an increased level of E-cadherin and low N-cadherin, both in the primary tumor and lung through the TGF-β pathway by the downregulated expression of TGF-β receptor 2. Our data may indicate that several other molecular mechanisms of CTX for tumor may be involved in metronomic chemotherapy, besides targeting angiogenesis and regulatory T cells. Installation of decentralized water-treatment plants is an ideal option to supply safe drinking water for rural communities. Presently in Sri Lanka, over 3.6 million villagers face acute water-quality problems, and chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) is also prevalent among this community. Most of the drinking water in these villages is unpalatable due to high hardness and salinity. As an interim measure, reverse-osmosis (RO) water-treatment plants are introduced to provide safe water. However, due to deficient electrolytes, RO-treated water tastes unpleasant to some consumers; hence, people refuse it after prolonged use. The operation, maintenance, and management of RO plants are other major problems. Aimed at providing safe drinking water to the rural sector in a cost-effective manner, in this study, we fabricated an automated drinking-water purification system based on nanofiltration (NF) membrane technology, which can remove divalent cations, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and pathogens efficiently, and monovalent ions partially, and thus keep electrolytes to some degree. Ten commercial NF membranes were tested in a laboratory, for solute and DOC removal efficiency and robustness. The DF-90 membrane showed the highest removal of DOC and hardness, and it was therefore selected, to design a pilot NF drinking-water treatment plant. The adhered DOC by the membrane can be cleaned by NaOH solution (pH = 12). The pilot NF drinking-water treatment plant has been in use since September 2018, and it shows excellent performance of removing DOC, TDS, hardness, fluoride, and pathogens in groundwater, and the permeate water of the NF plant has been well-accepted by the stakeholders of the society. The dominant genus of source water, and throughout the two processes (NF and RO), is Pseudomonas, and their difference is significant in the concentrates of the NF and RO processes. The influences of long-term static interaction between flotation reagents and minerals on mineral surface properties and their flotation behaviors were investigated in this work. Single mineral results showed that when the static interaction time between flotation reagents and minerals increased from 0 to 8 days, there were no significant differences in the recovery of fluorite (ranging from 77.50% to 74.50%), while the recovery of calcite dramatically decreased from 97.17% to 41.13%. The collector adsorption results indicated that after the long-term static interaction between the collector and minerals, adsorption and desorption of collector on the minerals occurred, and the adsorption amount of collector on fluorite and calcite varied from 0.396 mg/g to 0.421 mg/g, and from 0.444 mg/g to 0.404 mg/g, respectively. The contact angles of fluorite and calcite decreased from 134.3° and 105.0° for 0 days to 109.7° and 52.5° for 8 days, respectively, which demonstrated that the fluorite had a higher hydrophobicity than that of calcite after 8 days of static interaction between the minerals and collector. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis showed that there were chemisorptions between the collector and the surfaces of the fluorite and calcite. Meanwhile, the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results further elucidated that the amount of C=O from the oleic acid (OA) molecule for calcite treated for 8 days was less than for that treated for 0 days. In addition, the flotation results of the tailings from Jiangxi containing fluorite and calcite, indicated that the grade and recovery of fluorite increased from 87.18% and 40.99% for 0 days to 93.00% and 46.01% for 8 days, respectively, indicating that the separation of fluorite from calcite could be achieved via increasing the long-term static interaction between the flotation reagents and minerals. Seven new unstable tetramic acid derivatives, cladosporiumins I-O (1–7), together with the known analogue cladodionen (8) were isolated from the extract of the deep-sea-derived fungus Cladosporium sphaerospermum EIODSF 008. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis, quantum chemical calculations and ECD spectra. Compound 4 was a Mg complex of tetramic acid derivative. In acidic solvent, 4 could change to 1 and 6, and 7 could change to 5. In addition, 1, 5 and 8 existed as two exchangeable isomers, respectively. The structures of cladosporiumins E-H were reassigned as their Na complexes. The antibacterial and cytotoxic activities of 1–8 were also evaluated. Clarifying the genetic structure can facilitate the understanding of a species evolution history. It is crucial for the management of germplasm resources and providing useful guidance for effective selective breeding. Bellamya is an economically and ecologically important freshwater snail for fish, birds and even humans. Population genetic structures of the Bellamya species, however, were unknown in previous studies. Population genomics approaches with tens to hundreds of thousands of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) make it possible to detect previously unidentified structures. The population genomic study of seven populations of B. aeruginosa across three river systems (Yellow River, Yangtze River and Pearl River) in China was conducted by SLAF-seq. SLAF-seq obtained a total of 4737 polymorphisms SLAF-tags and 25,999 high-consistency genome-wide SNPs. The population genetic structure showed a clear division among populations from the Yellow River basin (YH and WL) and the Pearl River basin (QSH and LB), as well as population YC from the Yangtze River basin using the SNPs data. However, there existed no distinct population structure using the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). The anthropogenic translocation from the Yangtze River basin to the Pearl River basin and the passive dispersion from the Yangtze River basin to the Yellow River basin by flooding have weakened the phylogeographic pattern of B. aeruginosa . The divergence of B. aeruginosa in the three river systems suggests that the anthropogenic dispersal for aquaculture and breeding requires serious consideration of the population structure for the preservation of genetic diversity and effective utilization of germplasm resources.

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is the most important anthropogenic greenhouse gas and its concentration in atmosphere has been increasing rapidly due to the increase of anthropogenic CO₂ emissions. Quantifying anthropogenic CO₂ emissions is essential to evaluate the measures for mitigating climate change. Satellite-based measurements of greenhouse gases greatly advance the way of monitoring atmospheric CO₂ concentration. In this study, we propose an approach for estimating anthropogenic CO₂ emissions by an artificial neural network using column-average dry air mole fraction of CO₂ (XCO₂) derived from observations of Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite (GOSAT) in China. First, we use annual XCO₂ anomalies (dXCO₂) derived from XCO₂ and anthropogenic emission data during 2010⁻2014 as the training dataset to build a General Regression Neural Network (GRNN) model. Second, applying the built model to annual dXCO₂ in 2015, we estimate the corresponding emission and verify them using ODIAC emission. As a results, the estimated emissions significantly demonstrate positive correlation with that of ODIAC CO₂ emissions especially in the areas with high anthropogenic CO₂ emissions. Our results indicate that XCO₂ data from satellite observations can be applied in estimating anthropogenic CO₂ emissions at regional scale by the machine learning. This developed method can estimate carbon emission inventory in a data-driven way. In particular, it is expected that the estimation accuracy can be further improved when combined with other data sources, related CO₂ uptake and emissions, from satellite observations.

Three new asperentin-type compounds, 6-O-α-d-ribosylasperentin (1) and 6-O-α-d-ribosyl-8-O-methylasperentin (2) and 5-hydroxyl-6-O-methylasperentin (3), along with asperentin (4) and its known analogues (5-9), were isolated from a halotolerant Aspergillus sp. strain F00785, an endotrophic fungus from marine alga. Their structures were determined using extensive NMR and HRESIMS spectroscopic analysis, including the X-ray crystallographic data for the assignment of the absolute configurations of compound 9. Compound 4 exhibited highly potent inhibitory activity against crop pathogens, Colletotrichum gleosporioides Penz. and Colletotrichum gleosporioides (Penz.) Sacc.

The DNA repair gene X-ray cross-complementary group 4 (XRCC4), an important caretaker of the overall genome stability, is thought to play a major role in human tumorigenesis. We investigated the association between an important polymorphic variant of this gene at codon 247 (rs373409) and diffusely infiltrating astrocytoma (DIA) risk and prognosis. This hospital-based case-control study investigated this association in the Guangxi population. In total, 242 cases with DIA and 358 age-, sex-, and race-matched healthy controls were genotyped using TaqMan-PCR technique. We found a significant difference in the frequency of XRCC4 genotypes between cases and controls. Compared with the homozygote of XRCC4 codon 247 Ala alleles (XRCC4-AA), the genotypes of XRCC4 codon 247 Ser alleles (namely XRCC4-AS or -SS) increased DIA risk (odds ratios [OR], 1.82 and 2.89, respectively). Furthermore, XRCC4 polymorphism was correlated with tumor dedifferentiation of DIA (r = 0.261, p < 0.01). Additionally, this polymorphism modified the overall survival of DIA patients (the median survival times were 26, 14, and 8 months for patients with XRCC4-AA, -AS, and -SS, respectively). Like tumor grade, XRCC4 codon 247 polymorphism was an independent prognostic factor influencing the survival of DIA. These results suggest that XRCC4 codon 247 polymorphism may be associated with DIA risk and prognosis among the Guangxi population.

Four new citrinin derivatives, including two citrinin dimers and two citrinin monomer derivatives, were isolated and identified from a marine-derived fungal strain Penicillium sp. ML226 along with six known related compounds. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic and chemical methods. The new compounds showed modest cytotoxic activity against HepG-2 cell line and weak antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus.

Four new meroterpenes, guignardones F-I (1-4), together with two known compounds guignardones A (5) and B (6) were isolated from the endophytic fungus A1 of the mangrove plant Scyphiphora hydrophyllacea. Their structures and relative configurations were elucidated by spectroscopic data and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. A possible biogenetic pathway of compounds 1-6 was also proposed. All compounds were evaluated for inhibitory activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Staphylococcus aureus.
