Trisilanolphenyl-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane titanium (Ti-Ph-POSS) was synthesized through the corner-capping reaction, and Ti-Ph-POSS was dispersed in benzoxazine (BZ) to prepare Ti-Ph-POSS/PBZ composite materials. Ti-Ph-POSS could catalyze the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of BZ and reduce the curing temperature of benzoxazine. In addition, Ti immobilized on the Ti-Ph-POSS cage could form covalent bonds with the N or O atoms on polybenzoxazine, improving the thermal stability of PBZ. The catalytic activity of the Ti-Ph-POSS/BZ mixtures was assessed and identified through 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) analyses, while thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) were used to determine the thermal properties of the composite. It was found that PBZ exhibited a higher glass transition temperature (Tg) and better thermal stability when Ti-Ph-POSS was added. The curing behavior of the Ti-Ph-POSS/BZ mixtures showed that the initial (Ti) and peak (Tp) curing temperatures sharply decreased as the content of Ti-Ph-POSS and the heating rate increased. The curing kinetics of these Ti-Ph-POSS/BZ systems were analyzed using the Kissinger method, and the morphology of Ti-Ph-POSS/PBZ was determined via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that the Ti-Ph-POSS particles were well distributed in the composites. When the content exceeded 2 wt%, several Ti-Ph-POSS particles could not react with benzoxazine and were only dispersed within the PBZ matrix, resulting in aggregation of the Ti-Ph-POSS molecules. In austenitic steels, the co-segregation of C and Cr at grain boundaries can result in the formation of Cr23C6. However, the addition of B to steels can effectively reduce the amount of Cr23C6 formed and inhibit its ripening in experiments, simultaneously transforming it into Cr23(BC)6. Therefore, the effect of B on the co-segregation of C and Cr at the Σ5(210), Σ9(221) and Σ11(113) grain boundaries in austenitic steels was investigated using density functional theory. The results indicate that B, C, and Cr all tend to segregate at the three grain boundaries, with B and C showing a stronger segregation tendency. Furthermore, co-segregation of C and Cr with short distances occurs readily at the Σ5(210), Σ9(221) and Σ11(113) grain boundaries. The presence of B at grain boundaries can impede the segregation of Cr, particularly at the Σ9(221) and Σ11(113) grain boundaries. When B is pre-segregating at the Σ5(210) grain boundary, B, C, and Cr tend to co-segregate at the grain boundary. The grain boundary B hinders the accumulation of Cr near it for most grain boundaries, thereby inhibiting the co-segregation of Cr and C, making it difficult for B, C, and Cr to aggregate at most grain boundaries. In the present work, the two-phase mixture (HTLc) of hydrotalcite and its oxide were used to improve the barrier properties, UV resistance and antimicrobial activity of Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) for their application in liquid milk packaging. Firstly, CaZnAl-CO3-LDHs with a two-dimensional layered structure were synthesized by hydrothermal method. CaZnAl-CO3-LDHs precursors were characterized by XRD, TEM, ICP and dynamic light scattering. A series of PET/HTLc composite films were then prepared, characterized by XRD, FTIR and SEM, and a possible mechanism of the composite films with hydrotalcite was proposed. Barrier properties to water vapor and oxygen have been studied in PET nanocomposites, as well as their antibacterial efficacy by the colony technique and their mechanical properties after exposure to UV irradiation for 24 h. By the presence of 1.5 wt% HTLc in the PET composite film, the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) was reduced by 95.27%, the water vapor transmission rate was reduced by 72.58% and the inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli was 83.19% and 52.75%. Moreover, a simulation of the migration process in dairy products was used to prove the relative safety. This research first proposes a safe technique for fabricating hydrotalcite-based polymer composites with a high gas barrier, UV resistance and effective antibacterial activity. In order to reduce the segregation of Cr and Mo and inhibit the precipitates, we added a small amount of B and Ce to traditional S31254 steel. Using an air-cooling and low-temperature diffusion treatment, the purpose was to control B and Ce at the grain boundary. The heat-treatment process could prompt co-segregation of B, precipitate-forming elements, and Ce at the grain boundary at 950 °C. After aging at 950 °C for different amounts of time, the diffusion treatment had an obvious inhibitory effect on the precipitates that caused them to become discontinuous, fine, and serrated. The B-containing serrated precipitates were only rich in Mo, while Cr was homogeneously distributed in the probed volume. A uniform distribution of Cr reduced the Cr-depleted zone in the area adjacent to the phase interface. Ce was observed to be segregated at the grain boundary. This showed that Ce could inhibit the formation of precipitates at the grain boundary. The serrated precipitates had an obvious resistance to intergranular corrosion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Focusing on the serious volatilization of MoO3 in super austenitic stainless steel with a high Mo content, the influence of B on the formation of oxide film and the distribution of Cr and Mo was investigated at 900 °C and 1000 °C. Without the addition of B, Mo tends to diffuse to the surface, forming porous Cr/Mo-rich oxides, causing the volatilization of Mo. The addition of B can inhibit the diffusion of Mo to the surface, facilitate the diffusion of Cr to the surface and combines with O, providing conditions for the nucleation of Cr2O3. A large amount of Cr2O3 accumulated on the surface to form a dense passive film, which inhibited the diffusion of Mo to the surface, reduced the loss of Mo, and formed Mo/Cr-rich precipitates at grain boundaries that are close to the surface. However, it was difficult to form Mo-rich precipitates at the grain boundaries of a sample without B, which aggravated the volatilization of Mo from grain boundary to surface. S is a common corrosion medium for austenitic stainless steels. The severe intergranular fracture of austenitic stainless steels occurs in sulfur environments. In this paper, the permeation of S at different atomic positions for three symmetric tilt grain boundary types, i.e., Σ5(210), Σ5(310), and Σ9(114) have been computed using first-principles calculations. S has the strongest segregation tendency in the Σ5(210) grain boundary. A high content of S at the grain boundary indicates harm to the grain boundary. Sulfur segregation in the grain boundaries can weaken the strength of the metallic bond. When Mo and Cr are present at the Σ5(210) grain boundary, the sulfur-induced embrittlement is inhibited. With increased S concentration at the grain boundary, the coexistence of Mo and Cr can suppress the intergranular fracture of S on the grain boundary. Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) is a biodegradable polymer synthesized from petrochemical resources. PBAT has an exceptionally high elongation at break values which makes it one of the most promising substitutes for LDPE packaging films. However, the applicability of PBAT films is still limited by low strength and high production costs. In this work, we used polyethylene glycol 600 (PEG-600) as a coating agent to modify the surface of calcium carbonate and improve compatibility with the polymer matrix. A series of PBAT/CaCO3 composite films having different CaCO3 particle size and content of coating agent was prepared using extrusion blow molding. The effect of particle size of CaCO3 filler and the content of a coating agent on the mechanical and rheological properties of composite films have been studied. The biodegradation properties have been tested by burying the samples in soil or keeping them in artificial seawater for 90 days. It was shown that the addition of PEG-600 improves compatibility between the matrix and CaCO3 filler as polar –OH groups of PEG have a high affinity toward the polar surface of CaCO3. Moreover, the hydrophilicity of PEG-600 increased the diffusivity of water molecules and facilitated PBAT degradation. This work provides experimental data and theoretical guidance that support the development of high-performance PBAT/calcium carbonate films for the single use packaging industry. Polymer/clay composites are an innovative class of materials. In this study, we present a facile method for the preparation of biodegradable and robust PLA/organomodified montmorillonite (OMMT) composite films with excellent gas barrier performance. When the design of PLA/OMMT composite films, in addition to making OMMT have good intercalation effect in the matrix, the compatibility of intercalating polymer and matrix should also be considered. In this work, two polymers with high gas barrier properties, namely poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH), were selected to intercalate OMMT. The morphology and microstructures of the prepared PLA/PVA/OMMT and PLA/EVOH/OMMT composites were characterized by the X-ray diffraction measurement, scanning electron microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. It was shown that the good dispersibility of PVA in the PLA matrix, rather than the intercalation effect, was responsible for the improved gas barrier and mechanical properties of PLA/PVA/OMMT composite. The elongation at break increases from 4.5% to 22.7% when 1 wt % PVA is added to PLA/OMMT. Moreover, gas barrier of PLA/PVA1/OMMT measured as O2 permeability is 52.8% higher than that of neat PLA. This work provides a route to intercalate OMMT interlayer with high gas barrier polymers and thus can be a useful reference to fabricate PLA/OMMT composites with improved gas barrier and mechanical properties. A comparison of oxygen permeabilities with existing commercial packaging films indicates that the biodegradable PLA/PVA/OMMT may serve as a viable substitute for packaging film applications. With the popularity of portable positioning devices, crowd-sourced trajectory data have attracted widespread attention, and led to many research breakthroughs in the field of road network extraction. However, it is still a challenging task to detect the road networks of old downtown areas with complex network layouts from high noise, low frequency, and uneven distribution trajectories. Therefore, this paper focuses on the old downtown area and provides a novel intersection-first approach to generate road networks based on low quality, crowd-sourced vehicle trajectories. For intersection detection, virtual representative points with distance constraints are detected, and the clustering by fast search and find of density peaks (CFDP) algorithm is introduced to overcome low frequency features of trajectories, and improve the positioning accuracy of intersections. For link extraction, an identification strategy based on the Delaunay triangulation network is developed to quickly filter out false links between large-scale intersections. In order to alleviate the curse of sparse and uneven data distribution, an adaptive link-fitting scheme, considering feature differences, is further designed to derive link centerlines. The experiment results show that the method proposed in this paper preforms remarkably better in both intersection detection and road network generation for old downtown areas. Graphene oxide(GO)/polylactic acid (PLA) nanocomposite, prepared using a solvent-free melt mixing processing, is investigated as a potential oxygen barrier packaging film in this work. In order to disperse GO homogeneously in PLA matrix, hydrophobic silane coupling agent, i.e., γ-(2,3-epoxypropoxy)propyltrimethoxysilane (KH560), is used to modify the graphene oxide sheets. The modified GO is able to be well bonded to the PLA due to the formation of covalent bonds between the epoxy groups of KH560 and the carboxyl and hydroxyl terminal groups of PLA. Furthermore, the thermal stability of GO is enhanced due to the long alkyl side chain of KH560, which could also increase the crystallinity of PLA. As a result, the crystallinity of PLA is significantly improved because of the linear KH560 chains, which can act as nucleating agents to improve the crystallization. The KH560-GO helps to reduce the O2 permeability of KH560-GO/PLA composite films via a dual-action mechanism: (1) providing physical barrier due to their native barrier properties, and (2) by resulting in higher degree of crystallinity. The as-prepared KH560-GO0.75/PLA is able to exhibit ca. 33% and ca. 13% decrease in the PO2 than the neat PLA and GO0.75/PLA film, respectively. Finally, the mechanical properties and impact fractured surfaces indicate that the increase in the tensile strength and elongation at break value of KH560-GO/PLA are due to the strong interfacial adhesion and the strong bonding between the epoxy group of KH560-GO and hydroxyl and carboxyl acid terminal groups of PLA matrix. The addition of B can inhibit the precipitation of σ phases at the grain boundary to improve the hot workability and corrosion resistance for super austenitic stainless steel with high Cr and Mo content. This study focused on the interaction between B and Mo at the Fe–Cr(111)/Cr2O3(0001) interface and its effect on interfacial adhesion by employing the first-principles method, especially the effect of B on the segregation behavior of Mo. The most stable O-terminated Fe/Cr2O3 interface was chosen as the basic configuration. The segregation energy and the work of separation were calculated for the metal/chromia interface with Fe–Cr as the substrate. It has been demonstrated that B can promote the diffusion of Mo atoms into the oxide layer to increase the content of Mo in the passive film. In addition, the interfacial adhesion is higher at the most segregated sites. However, it is more difficult for two or more Mo atoms than a single Mo atom to diffuse into the oxide part with the effect of B, indicating that B can only improve the Mo content of the passive film to a small extent. The electronic properties were also further discussed to analyze the interactions and the binding characters between doped atoms and their surrounding atoms and to explain the underlying reasons for the variation of interfacial adhesion. Extracting highly detailed and accurate road network information from crowd-sourced vehicle trajectory data, which has the advantages of being low cost and able to update fast, is a hot topic. With the rapid development of wireless transmission technology, spatial positioning technology, and the improvement of software and hardware computing ability, more and more researchers are focusing on the analysis of Global Positioning System (GPS) trajectories and the extraction of road information. Road intersections are an important component of roads, as they play a significant role in navigation and urban planning. Even though there have been many studies on this subject, it remains challenging to determine road intersections, especially for crowd-sourced vehicle trajectory data with lower accuracy, lower sampling frequency, and uneven distribution. Therefore, we provided a new intersection-first approach for road network generation based on low-frequency taxi trajectories. Firstly, road intersections from vector space and raster space were extracted respectively via using different methods; then, we presented an integrated identification strategy to fuse the intersection extraction results from different schemes to overcome the sparseness of vehicle trajectory sampling and its uneven distribution; finally, we adjusted road information, repaired fractured segments, and extracted the single/double direction information and the turning relationships of the road network based on the intersection results, to guarantee precise geometry and correct topology for the road networks. Compared with other methods, this method shows better results, both in terms of their visual inspections and quantitative comparisons. This approach can solve the problems mentioned above and ensure the integrity and accuracy of road intersections and road networks. In this study, composite aerogels with excellent mechanical properties were prepared by using carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as raw materials, with carboxylic carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as reinforcement. By controlling the mass fraction of CNTs, composite aerogels with different CNTs were prepared, and the surface morphology, specific surface area, compressive modulus, density and adsorption capacities towards different oils were studied. Compared to the pure CMC aerogel, the specific surface areas of CMC/CNTs were decreased because of the agglomeration of CNTs. However, the densities of composite aerogels were lower than pure CMC aerogel. This is because the CNTs were first dispersed in water and then added to CMC solution. The results indicated that it was easy for the low CMC initial concentration to be converted to low density aerogel. The compressive modulus was increased from 0.3 MPa of pure CMC aerogel to 0.5 MPa of 5 wt % CMC/CNTs aerogel. Meanwhile, the prepared aerogels showed promising properties as the adsorption materials. Because of the high viscosity, liquid possesses strong adhesion to the pore wall, the adsorption capacity of the CMC aerogel to the liquid increases as the viscosity of the liquid increases. Due to the hydrophobic nature of poly (butylene terephthalate) (PBAT), and the hydrophilic nature of bamboo flour (BF), a BF/PBAT (50/50) blend shows low mechanical properties, and especially shows poor impact strength. In order to increase the interfacial adhesion between BF and PBAT, diisocyanate was used as a reactive compatibilizer to modify bamboo powder. A series of BF/PBAT composites were prepared by the method of mixing and melting in an internal mixer. After adding reactive compatibilizer 4,4'-methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate) (MDI), BF/PBAT (50/50) composites with high mechanical properties were successfully prepared. The tensile strength, elongation at break, and impact strength of the BF/MDI-2/PBAT composite with 2 wt % MDI content were increased by 1.9, 6.8, and 4.3 times respectively over the BF/PBAT blend without the added MDI. The higher toughening effect of MDI in BF/PBAT composites can be mainly ascribed to the improved interface bonding between BF and PBAT. The isocyanate group of MDI can react with the hydroxyl group on the BF surface and in situ formation of the carbamate group on the BF surface. The residual isocyanate can then react with the hydroxyl group of PBAT and form carbamate groups. The rheological behaviors demonstrate that addition of appropriate amounts of MDI, 1 wt % and 2 wt %, can promote the flowability of the molten BF/PBAT composites due to the decrease in interparticle interaction between bamboo powder and the increase in the thermal motion of the molecules.

Chemical modification of chitosan is increasingly studied for its potential of providing new applications of chitosan. Here, a group of novel chitosan quaternary ammonium derivatives containing pyridine or amino-pyridine were designed and successfully synthesized through chemical modification of chitosan. Pyridine and amino-pyridine were used as functional groups to improve the antifungal activity of chitosan derivatives. The chitosan derivatives' antioxidant activity against hydroxyl-radical and 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)-radical was tested in vitro. The results showed that chitosan derivatives had better water solubility and stronger antioxidant activity compared with chitosan in all assays. Especially, compounds 3C and 3E (with 3-amino pyridine and 2,3-diamino pyridine as substitute respectively) exhibited stronger hydroxyl-radical and DPPH-radical scavenging ability than other synthesized compounds. These data demonstrated that the synergistic effect of the amino group and pyridine would improve the antioxidant activity of chitosan derivatives, and the position of the amino group on pyridine could influence the antioxidant property of chitosan derivatives.
