The excessive utilization of antimicrobials in humans and animals has resulted in considerable environmental contamination, necessitating the development of high-performance antibiotic adsorption media. A significant challenge is the development of composite nanofibrous materials that are both beneficial and easy to fabricate, with the aim of improving adsorption capacity. Herein, a new kind of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8)-modified regenerated cellulose nanofibrous membrane (ZIF-8@RC NFM) was designed and fabricated by combining electrospinning and in situ surface modification technologies. Benefiting from its favorable surface wettability, enhanced tensile strength, interconnected porous structure, and relatively large specific surface area, the resulting ZIF-8@RC NFMs exhibit a relatively high adsorption capacity for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) of 105 mg g -1 within 3 h. Moreover, a Langmuir isotherm model and a pseudo-second-order model have been demonstrated to be more appropriate for the description of the TCH adsorption process of ZIF-8@RC-3 NFMs. Additionally, this composite fibrous material could keep a relatively stable adsorption capability under various ionic strengths. The successful fabrication of the novel ZIF-8@RC NFMs may shed light on the further development of wastewater adsorption treatment materials.

5-fluorouracil (5-FU), a chemotherapeutic agent against oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), is limited by poor pharmacokinetics and toxicity. The pH-sensitive zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) may increase the selectivity and length of 5-FU released into the acidic tumor microenvironment. This study examined the in vitro 5-FU absorption and release profiles of ZIF-8, and then progressed to cytotoxicity assays using the OSCC primary cell line SCC7. The 5-FU loading capacity of ZIF-8 was calculated with UV-vis spectroscopy (λ = 260 nm). 5-FU release was quantified by submerging 5-FU@ZIF-8 in pH 7.4 and 5.5 acetate buffer over 48 h. For the cytotoxicity assays, 5-FU, ZIF-8, and 5-FU@ZIF-8 were added to SCC7 cultures at 25, 50, and 100 μg/mL. Cell viability was assessed through toluidine blue staining and further quantified through transcriptomic RNA sequencing. ZIF-8 stabilized at a maximum absorption of 2.71 ± 0.22 mg 5-FU, and released 0.66 mg more 5-FU at pH 5.5 than 7.4 for at least 72 h. The cytotoxicity assays showed that 5-FU@ZIF-8 had a synergistic inhibitory effect at 50 μg/mL. The RNA sequencing analysis further revealed the molecular targets of 5-FU@ZIF-8 in SCC7. 5-FU@ZIF-8 may release 5-FU based on the pH of the surrounding microenvironments and synergistically inhibit OSCC.

Membrane-based pervaporation (PV) for organic solvent dehydration is of great significance in the chemical and petrochemical industries. In this work, high-aluminum ZSM-5 zeolite membranes were synthesized by a fluoride-assisted secondary growth on α-alumina tubular supports using mordenite framework inverted (MFI) nanoseeds (~110 nm) and a template-free synthesis solution with a low Si/Al ratio of 10. Characterization by XRD, EDX, and SEM revealed that the prepared membrane was a pure-phase ZSM-5 zeolite membrane with a Si/Al ratio of 3.8 and a thickness of 2.8 µm. Subsequently, two categories of PV performance parameters (i.e., flux versus separation factor and permeance versus selectivity) were used to systematically examine the effects of operating conditions on the PV dehydration performance of different organic solvents (methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, and isopropanol), and their PV mechanisms were explored. Employing permeance and selectivity effectively disentangles the influence of operating conditions on PV performance, thereby elucidating the inherent contribution of membranes to separation performance. The results show that the mass transfer during PV dehydration of organic solvents was mainly dominated by the adsorption-diffusion mechanism. Furthermore, the diffusion of highly polar water and methanol molecules within membrane pores had a strong mutual slowing-down effect, resulting in significantly lower permeance than other binary systems. However, the mass transfer process for water/low-polar organic solvent (ethanol, n-propanol, and isopropanol) mixtures was mainly controlled by competitive adsorption caused by affinity differences. In addition, the high-aluminum ZSM-5 zeolite membrane exhibited superior PV dehydration performance for water/isopropanol mixtures.

Zeolite type 5A combined with the magnetic properties of maghemite nanoparticles facilitate the rapid absorption of heavy metals, which makes them an interesting proposal for the remediation of water contaminated with lead and arsenic. However, the physicochemical analysis related to concentration and size for the use of this magnetic zeolite composite (MZ0) in water bodies and the possible toxicological effects on aquatic fauna has not yet been carried out. The main objective of the research work is to determine lethal concentrations that cause damage to Daphnia magna based on LC 50 tests, morphology, reproductive rate, and quantification of the expression of three genes closely involved in the morphological development of vital structures ( Glass , NinaE , Pph13 ). To achieve this objective, populations of neonates and young individuals were used, and results showed that the LC 50 for neonates was 11,314 mg L -1 , while for young individuals, it was 0.0310 mg L -1 . Damage to morphological development was evidenced by a decrease in eye size in neonates, an increase in eye size in young individuals, variations in the size of the caudal spine for both age groups, and slight increases in the heart size, body, and antenna for both age groups. The reproductive rate of neonates was not affected by the lower concentrations of MZ0, while in young individuals, the reproductive rate decreased by more than 50% from the minimum exposure concentration of MZ0. And for both ages, Glass gene expression levels decreased as the MZ0 concentration increased. Also, the MZ0 evidenced its affinity for the exoskeleton of D. magna , which was observed using both light microscopy and electron microscopy. It is concluded that MZ0 did not generate significant damage in the mortality, morphology, reproductive rate, or gene expression in D. magna at lower concentrations, demonstrating the importance of evaluating the possible impacts on different life stages of the cladoceran.

As part of the multifaceted strategies developed to shape the common environmental policy, considerable attention is now being paid to assessing the degree of environmental degradation in soil under xenobiotic pressure. Bisphenol A (BPA) has only been marginally investigated in this ecosystem context. Therefore, research was carried out to determine the biochemical properties of soils contaminated with BPA at two levels of contamination: 500 mg and 1000 mg BPA kg -1 d.m. of soil. Reliable biochemical indicators of soil changes, whose activity was determined in the pot experiment conducted, were used: dehydrogenases, catalase, urease, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, arylsulfatase, and β -glucosidase. Using the definition of soil health as the ability to promote plant growth, the influence of BPA on the growth and development of Zea mays , a plant used for energy production, was also tested. As well as the biomass of aerial parts and roots, the leaf greenness index (SPAD) of Zea mays was also assessed. A key aspect of the research was to identify those of the six remediating substances-molecular sieve, zeolite, sepiolite, starch, grass compost, and fermented bark-whose use could become common practice in both environmental protection and agriculture. Exposure to BPA revealed the highest sensitivity of dehydrogenases, urease, and acid phosphatase and the lowest sensitivity of alkaline phosphatase and catalase to this phenolic compound. The enzyme response generated a reduction in the biochemical fertility index (BA 21 ) of 64% (500 mg BPA) and 70% (1000 mg BPA kg -1 d.m. of soil). The toxicity of BPA led to a drastic reduction in root biomass and consequently in the aerial parts of Zea mays . Compost and molecular sieve proved to be the most effective in mitigating the negative effect of the xenobiotic on the parameters discussed. The results obtained are the first research step in the search for further substances with bioremediation potential against both soil and plants under BPA pressure.

In this study, hybrid skeleton material ZIF-8@ZIF-67 was synthesized by the epitaxial growth method and then was utilized as a carrier for encapsulating Pseudomonas fluorescens lipase (PFL) through the co-precipitation method, resulting in the preparation of immobilized lipase (PFL@ZIF-8@ZIF-67). Subsequently, it was further treated with glutaraldehyde to improve protein immobilization yield. Under optimal immobilization conditions, the specific hydrolytic activity of PFL@ZIF-8@ZIF-67 was 20.4 times higher than that of the free PFL. The prepared biocatalyst was characterized and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR). Additionally, the thermal stability of PFL@ZIF-8@ZIF-67 at 50 °C was significantly improved compared to the free PFL. After 7 weeks at room temperature, PFL@ZIF-8@ZIF-67 retained 78% of the transesterification activity, while the free enzyme was only 29%. Finally, PFL@ZIF-8@ZIF-67 was applied to the neryl acetate preparation in a solvent-free system, and the yield of neryl acetate reached 99% after 3 h of reaction. After 10 repetitions, the yields of neryl acetate catalyzed by PFL@ZIF-8@ZIF-67 and the free PFL were 80% and 43%, respectively.

The avoidance of allergen intake is crucial for persons affected by peanut allergy; however, the cross-contamination of food is common and leads to unpredictable consequences after the consumption of supposedly "safe" food. The aim of the present study was to eliminate harmful traces of peanut allergens from food using purified clinoptilolite-tuff (PCT)-a specially processed zeolite material. Analyses were performed using a peanut ELISA and a Coomassie blue (Bradford) assay. Mimicking conditions of the human gastrointestinal tract demonstrated a higher efficacy of PCT in the intestine (pH 6.8) than in the stomach (pH 1.5). Adsorption rates were fast (<2 min) and indicated high capacities (23 µg and 40 µg per 1 mg of PCT at pH 1.5 and pH 6.8, respectively). Allergenically relevant peanut protein concentrations were sorbed in artificial fluids (32 µg/mL by 4 mg/mL of PCT at pH 1.5 and 80.8 µg/mL by 0.25 mg/mL of PCT at pH 6.8) when imitating a daily dose of 2 g of PCT in an average stomach volume of 500 mL. Experiments focusing on the bioavailability of peanut protein attached to PCT revealed sustained sorption at pH 1.5 and only minor desorption at pH 6.8. Accompanied by gluten, peanut proteins showed competing binding characteristics with PCT. This study therefore demonstrates the potential of PCT in binding relevant quantities of peanut allergens during the digestion of peanut-contaminated food.

Oridonin (Ori) is a naturally existing diterpenoid substance that mainly exists in the Chinese medicinal plant Rabdosia rubescens. It was previously found to possess intriguing biological properties; however, the quick clearance from plasma and limited solubility in water restricts its use as a drug. Several metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), having big surfaces and large pores, have recently been considered promising drug transporters. The zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), a form of MOF consisting of 2-methylimidazole with zinc ions, is structurally stable under physiologically neutral conditions, while it can degrade at low pH values such as in tumor cells. Herein, a nanosized drug delivery system, Ori@ZIF-8, was successfully designed for encapsulating and transporting oridonin to the tumor site. The drug loading of the prepared Ori@ZIF-8 was 26.78%, and the particles' mean size was 240.5 nm. In vitro, the release of Ori@ZIF-8 exhibited acid sensitivity, with a slow release under neutral conditions and rapid release of the drug under weakly acidic conditions. According to the in vitro anti-tumor experiments, Ori@ZIF-8 produced higher cytotoxicity than free Ori and induced apoptosis in A549 cancer cells. In conclusion, Ori@ZIF-8 could be a potential pH-responsive carrier to accurately release more oridonins at the tumor site.

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs), characterized by progressive degeneration and death of neurons, are strongly related to aging, and the number of people with NDs will continue to rise. Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD) are the most common NDs, and the current treatments offer no cure. A growing body of research shows that AD and especially PD are intricately related to intestinal health and the gut microbiome and that both diseases can spread retrogradely from the gut to the brain. Zeolites are a large family of minerals built by [SiO 4 ] 4- and [AlO 4 ] 5- tetrahedrons joined by shared oxygen atoms and forming a three-dimensional microporous structure holding water molecules and ions. The most widespread and used zeolite is clinoptilolite, and additionally, mechanically activated clinoptilolites offer further improved beneficial effects. The current review describes and discusses the numerous positive effects of clinoptilolite and its forms on gut health and the gut microbiome, as well as their detoxifying, antioxidative, immunostimulatory, and anti-inflammatory effects, relevant to the treatment of NDs and especially AD and PD. The direct effects of clinoptilolite and its activated forms on AD pathology in vitro and in vivo are also reviewed, as well as the use of zeolites as biosensors and delivery systems related to PD.

Leach bed reactors (LBRs) are dry anaerobic systems that can handle feedstocks with high solid content, like chicken manure, with minimal water addition. In this study, the chicken manure was mixed with zeolite, a novel addition, and packed in the LBR to improve biogas production. The resulting leachate was then processed in a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR), where most of the methane was produced. The supernatant of the CSTR was returned to the LBR. The batch mode operation of the LBR led to a varying methane production rate (MPR) with a peak in the beginning of each batch cycle when the leachate was rich in organic matter. Comparing the MPR in both systems, the peaks in the zeolite system were higher and more acute than in the control system, which was under stress, as indicated by the acetate accumulation at 2328 mg L -1 . Moreover, the presence of zeolite in the LBR played a crucial role, increasing the overall methane yield from 0.142 (control experiment) to 0.171 NL CH 4 per g of volatile solids of chicken manure entering the system at a solid retention time of 14 d. Zeolite also improved the stability of the system. The ammonia concentration increased gradually due to the little water entering the system and reached 3220 mg L -1 (control system) and 2730 mg L -1 (zeolite system) at the end of the experiment. It seems that zeolite favored the accumulation of the ammonia at a lower rate (14.0 mg L -1 d -1 ) compared to the control experiment (17.3 mg L -1 d -1 ). The microbial analysis of the CSTR fed on the leachate from the LBR amended with zeolite showed a higher relative abundance of Methanosaeta (83.6%) compared to the control experiment (69.1%). Both CSTRs established significantly different bacterial profiles from the inoculum after 120 days of operation ( p < 0.05). Regarding the archaeal communities, there were no significant statistical differences between the CSTRs and the inoculum ( p > 0.05).

A chemo-drug such as cisplatin is effective for cancer treatment but remains non-specific, is susceptible to drug resistance, and induces several side effects on organ systems. Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8, a type of MOF, has gained attention, including as a drug delivery method for targeted cancer therapeutics. In this study, ZIF-8/Silica nanocomposite was synthesized using a one-pot hydrothermal technique using the Stober technique. We studied the effect of phyto-synthesized GPt and chemo-drug cisplatin CPt on ZIF-8/Silica for targeted efficacy of cancer therapy. The texture, morphology, and chemical environment of Pt on ZIF-8/Silica were analyzed using different characterization techniques such as XRD, FT-IR, BET, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, SEM-EDX, TEM, zeta potential, and TGA analysis. The isothermal behavior of CPt and GPt adsorption was investigated using isotherm models like Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm. The adsorption kinetics indicating the adsorption efficiency of GPt and CPt are influenced by the concentration of Pt complex and the adsorption sites of ZIF-8/Silica. A high entrapment efficiency and loading capacity of GPt (86% and 4.3%) and CPt (91% and 4.5%) were evident on ZIF-8/Silica. The nanocomposite showed a pH-sensitive Pt release using a dialysis membrane technique. For instance, a high release of GPt (93%) was observed under pH = 6.6 in 72 h, while the release reduced to 50% at pH 7.4 in 72 h. The anti-cancer activity of nanoformulations was studied in vitro using MCF7 (breast cancer cells) and HFF-1 (human foreskin fibroblast) cells. The findings demonstrated that GPt is as effective as CPt; the EC50 value for MCF7 cells treated with ZIF-8/Silica/Cp/PEG was 94.86 µg/mL, whereas for ZIF-8/Silica/GPt/PEG it was 60.19 µg/mL.

Here, we report the results of our 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance study of the dynamics of water molecules confined in zeolites (mordenite and ZSM-5 structures) with hierarchical porosity (micropores in zeolite lamella and mesopores formed by amorphous SiO 2 in the inter-lamellar space). 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra show that water experiences complex behavior within the temperature range from 173 to 298 K. The temperature dependence of 1 H spin-lattice relaxation evidences the presence of three processes with different activation energies: freezing (about 30 kJ/mol), fast rotation (about 10 kJ/mol), and translational motion of water molecules (23.6 and 26.0 kJ/mol for pillared mordenite and ZSM-5, respectively). For translational motion, the activation energy is markedly lower than for water in mesoporous silica or zeolites with similar mesopore size but with disordered secondary porosity. This indicates that the process of water diffusion in zeolites with hierarchical porosity is governed not only by the presence of mesopores, but also by the mutual arrangement of meso- and micropores. The translational motion of water molecules is determined mainly by zeolite micropores.

A series of bifunctional catalysts, MoS 2 /Al 2 O 3 (70 wt.%), zeolite (30 wt.%) (zeolite-ZSM-5, ZSM-12, and ZSM-22), and silica aluminophosphate SAPO-11, were synthesized for hydroconversion of methyl palmitate (10 wt.% in dodecane) in a trickle-bed reactor. Mo loading was about 7 wt.%. Catalysts and supports were characterized by different physical-chemical methods (HRTEM-EDX, SEM-EDX, XRD, N 2 physisorption, and FTIR spectroscopy). Hydroprocessing was performed at a temperature of 250-350 °C, hydrogen pressure of 3.0-5.0 MPa, liquid hourly space velocity (LHSV) of 36 h -1 , and an H 2 /feed ratio of 600 Nm 3 /m 3 . Complete conversion of oxygen-containing compounds was achieved at 310 °C in the presence of MoS 2 /Al 2 O 3 -zeolite catalysts; the selectivity for the conversion of methyl palmitate via the 'direct' hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) route was over 85%. The yield of iso-alkanes gradually increases in order: MoS 2 /Al 2 O 3 < MoS 2 /Al 2 O 3 -ZSM-12 < MoS 2 /Al 2 O 3 -ZSM-5 < MoS 2 /Al 2 O 3 -SAPO-11 < MoS 2 /Al 2 O 3 -ZSM-22. The sample MoS 2 /Al 2 O 3 -ZSM-22 demonstrated the highest yield of iso-alkanes (40%). The hydroisomerization activity of the catalysts was in good correlation with the concentration of Brønsted acid sites in the synthesized supports.

Management of chronic inflammation and wounds has always been a key issue in the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors. Curcumin (CCM) is an active ingredient extracted from turmeric rhizomes with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial activities, thus showing significant effectiveness toward wound healing. However, its shortcomings, such as poor water solubility, poor chemical stability, and fast metabolic rate, limit its bioavailability and long-term use. In this context, hydrogels appear to be a versatile matrix for carrying and stabilizing drugs due to their biomimetic structure, soft porous microarchitecture, and favorable biomechanical properties. The drug loading/releasing efficiencies can also be controlled via using highly crystalline and porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Herein, a flexible hydrogel composed of a sodium alginate (SA) matrix and CCM-loaded MOFs was constructed for long-term drug release and antibacterial activity. The morphology and physicochemical properties of composite hydrogels were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Raman spectroscopy, and mechanical property tests. The results showed that the composite hydrogel was highly twistable and bendable to comply with human skin mechanically. The as-prepared hydrogel could capture efficient CCM for slow drug release and effectively kill bacteria. Therefore, such composite hydrogel is expected to provide a new management system for chronic wound dressings.

This study presents the synthesis of zeolites derived from coal fly ash (CFA) using the fusion-assisted alkaline hydrothermal method. The zeolites were synthesized by combining CFA and NaOH at a molar ratio of 1:1.2 under fusion temperatures of 500, 600, and 700 °C. Subsequently, the obtained zeolites were subjected to further modifications through the incorporation of magnetic (Fe 3 O 4 ) and silver (Ag 0 ) nanoparticles (NPs). The Fe 3 O 4 NPs were introduced through co-precipitation of Fe(NO 3 ) 2 and FeCl 3 at a molar ratio of 1:1, followed by thermal curing at 120 °C. On the other hand, the Ag 0 NPs were incorporated via ion exchange of Na + with Ag + and subsequent reduction using NaBH 4 . The synthesized porous materials exhibited the formation of zeolites, specifically analcime and sodalite, as confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Additionally, the presence of Fe 3 O 4 and Ag 0 NPs was also confirmed by XRD analysis. The elemental composition analysis of the synthesized nanocomposites further validated the successful formation of Fe 3 O 4 and Ag 0 NPs. Nitrogen porosimetric analysis revealed the formation of a microporous structure, with the BET surface area of the zeolites and nanocomposites ranging from 48.6 to 128.7 m 2 /g and pore sizes ranging from 0.6 to 4.8 nm. The porosimetric characteristics of the zeolites exhibited noticeable changes after the modification process, which can be attributed to the impregnation of Fe 3 O 4 and Ag 0 NPs. The findings of this research demonstrate the effectiveness of the fusion-assisted method in producing synthetic zeolites and nanocomposites derived from CFA. The resulting composites were evaluated for their potential application in the removal of mercury ions from aqueous solutions. Among the samples tested, the composite containing Ag 0 NPs exhibited the highest adsorption capacity, reaching 107.4 mg of Hg 2+ per gram of composite. The composites modified with Fe 3 O 4 NPs and Ag/Fe 3 O 4 nanocomposites displayed adsorption capacities of 68.4 mg/g and 71.4 mg/g, respectively.

Methyl acetate (MA) has a wide range of applications as an important industrial chemical. Traditional MOR zeolite for carbonylation of DME to MA accumulated carbon easily because of a 12-membered ring (12 MR) channel. In this work, we innovatively developed the method of recrystallization ferrierite (FER) zeolite using special chelating ligand sodium oleate which can affect ions other than alkali metals. The characterization results of N 2 adsorption, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) show that hydrothermal recrystallization of ferrierite using sodium oleate resulted in a higher Si/Al ratio, a bigger specific surface area and a larger number of Brønsted acid sites in the eight MR channels, which was more efficient in the reaction of carbonylation of dimethyl ether than ordinary alkali treatment.

The estrogen metabolite 2-methoxyestradiol (2ME) is a promissory anticancer drug mainly because of its pro-apoptotic properties in cancer cells. However, the therapeutic use of 2ME has been hampered due to its low solubility and bioavailability. Thus, it is necessary to find new ways of administration for 2ME. Zeolites are inorganic aluminosilicates with a porous structure and are considered good adsorbents and sieves in the pharmaceutical field. Here, mordenite-type zeolite nanoparticles were loaded with 2ME to assess its efficiency as a delivery system for prostate cancer treatment. The 2ME-loaded zeolite nanoparticles showed an irregular morphology with a mean hydrodynamic diameter of 250.9 ± 11.4 nm, polydispersity index of 0.36 ± 0.04, and a net negative surface charge of -34 ± 1.73 meV. Spectroscopy with UV-vis and Attenuated Total Reflectance Infrared Fourier-Transform was used to elucidate the interaction between the 2ME molecules and the zeolite framework showing the formation of a 2ME-zeolite conjugate in the nanocomposite. The studies of adsorption and liberation determined that zeolite nanoparticles incorporated 40% of 2ME while the liberation of 2ME reached 90% at pH 7.4 after 7 days. The 2ME-loaded zeolite nanoparticles also decreased the viability and increased the mRNA of the 2ME-target gene F-spondin, encoded by SPON1, in the human prostate cancer cell line LNCaP. Finally, the 2ME-loaded nanoparticles also decreased the viability of primary cultures from mouse prostate cancer. These results show the development of 2ME-loaded zeolite nanoparticles with physicochemical and biological properties compatible with anticancer activity on the human prostate and highlight that zeolite nanoparticles can be a good carrier system for 2ME.

Two series of MCM-36 zeolites intercalated with various pillars and modified with iron were synthesized, analyzed with respect to their physicochemical properties, and tested as catalysts for the NH 3 -SCR process. It was found that the characteristic MWW morphology of MCM-36 can be obtained successfully using silica, alumina, and iron oxide as pillars. Additionally, one-pot synthesis of the material with iron resulted in the incorporation of monomeric Fe 3+ species into the framework positions. The results of catalytic tests revealed that the one-pot synthesized sample intercalated with silica and alumina was the most efficient catalyst of NO reduction, exhibiting ca. 100% activity at 250 °C. The outstanding performance of the material was attributed to the abundance of Lewis acid sites and the beneficial influence of alumina on the distribution of iron species in the zeolite. In contrast, the active centers originating from the Fe 2 O 3 pillars improved the NO conversion in the high-temperature range. Nevertheless, the aggregated particles of the metal oxide limited the access of the reacting molecules to the inner structure of the catalyst, which affected the overall activity and promoted the formation of N 2 O above 300 °C.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are currently under progressive development as a tool for non-viral biomolecule delivery. Biomolecules such as proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids can be encapsulated in MOFs for therapeutic purposes. The favorable physicochemical properties of MOFs make them an attractive choice for delivering a wide range of biomolecules including nucleic acids. Herein, a green fluorescence protein (GFP)-expressing plasmid DNA (pDNA) is used as a representative of a biomolecule to encapsulate within a Zn-based metal-organic framework (MOF) called a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF). The synthesized biocomposites are coated with positively charged amino acids (AA) to understand the effect of surface functionalization on the delivery of pDNA to prostate cancer (PC-3) cells. FTIR and zeta potential confirm the successful preparation of positively charged amino acid-functionalized derivatives of pDNA@ZIF (i.e., pDNA@ZIF AA ). Moreover, XRD and SEM data show that the functionalized derivates retain the pristine crystallinity and morphology of pDNA@ZIF. The coated biocomposites provide enhanced uptake of genetic material by PC-3 human prostate cancer cells. The AA-modulated fine-tuning of the surface charge of biocomposites results in better interaction with the cell membrane and enhances cellular uptake. These results suggest that pDNA@ZIF AA can be a promising alternative tool for non-viral gene delivery.

In this study, zeolites prepared by the hydrothermal method from Ecuadorian clay were combined with the precursor clay and with the semiconductor ZnTiO 3 /TiO 2 prepared by the sol-gel method to adsorb and photodegrade cyanide species from aqueous solutions. These compounds were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-rays, point of zero charge, and specific surface area. The adsorption characteristics of the compounds were measured using batch adsorption experiments as a function of pH, initial concentration, temperature, and contact time. The Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order model fit the adsorption process better. The equilibrium state in the reaction systems at pH = 7 was reached around 130 and 60 min in the adsorption and photodegradation experiments, respectively. The maximum cyanide adsorption value (73.37 mg g -1 ) was obtained with the ZC compound (zeolite + clay), and the maximum cyanide photodegradation capacity (90.7%) under UV light was obtained with the TC compound (ZnTiO 3 /TiO 2 + clay). Finally, the reuse of the compounds in five consecutive treatment cycles was determined. The results reflect that the compounds synthesized and adapted to the extruded form could potentially be used for the removal of cyanide from wastewater.

N 2 O is a greenhouse gas and a candidate oxidant. Volatile organic pollutants (VOCs) have caused great harm to the atmospheric ecological environment. Developing the technique utilizing N 2 O as the oxidant to oxidize VOCs to realize the collaborative purification has significant importance and practical value for N 2 O emission control and VOC abatement. Therefore, the study of N 2 O catalytic oxidation of tert-butanol based on zeolite catalysts was carried out. A series of molecular sieves, including FER, MOR, ZSM-5, Y, and BEA, were selected as the catalyst objects, and the 1.5% wt Fe and Co were, respectively, loaded on the zeolite catalysts via the impregnation method. It was found that the catalytic performance of BEA was the best among the molecular sieves. Comparing the catalytic performance of Fe-BEA under different load gradients (0.25~2%), it was found that 1.5% Fe-BEA possessed the best catalytic activity. A series of characterization methods showed that Fe 3+ content in 1.5% Fe-BEA was the highest, and more active sites formed to promote the catalytic reaction. The α-O in the reaction eventually oxidized tert-butanol to CO 2 over the active site. The Co mainly existed in the form of Co 2+ cations over Co-BEA samples; the 2% Co-BEA possessing higher amounts of Co 2+ exhibited the highest activity among the prepared Co-BEA samples.

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) have been extensively examined for their potential in acid-base catalysis. Many studies have demonstrated that ZIFs possess unique structural and physicochemical properties that allow them to demonstrate high activity and yield products with high selectivity. Herein, we highlight the nature of ZIFs in terms of their chemical formulation and the textural, acid-base, and morphological properties that strongly affect their catalytic performance. Our primary focus is the application of spectroscopic methods as instruments for analyzing the nature of active sites because these methods can allow an understanding of unusual catalytic behavior from the perspective of the structure-property-activity relationship. We examine several reactions, such as condensation reactions (the Knoevenagel condensation and Friedländer reactions), the cycloaddition of CO 2 to epoxides, the synthesis of propylene glycol methyl ether from propylene oxide and methanol, and the cascade redox condensation of 2-nitroanilines with benzylamines. A bimetallic Pt8Co1 supported on alkali-treated ZSM-5 zeolite (ZSM-5-AT) was prepared through the impregnation method. The structure and surface properties of the catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N 2 -sorption and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) as well as temperature-programmed desorption of NH 3 (NH 3 -TPD) and temperature-programmed reduction of H 2 (H 2 -TPR). The TEM images present that the bimetallic Pt8Co1 nanoparticles with a mean particle size of 4-6 nm were uniformly dispersed on the alkali-treated ZSM-5 zeolite. The bimetallic Pt8Co1/ZSM-5-AT catalyst exhibited an extraordinary COL selectivity of 65% at a >99% CAL conversion efficiency, which showed a much higher catalytic performance (including the activity and selectivity) than the monometallic Pt/ZSM-5-AT and Co/ZSM-5-AT catalysts in the selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde (CAL) to cinnamyl alcohol (COL) using hydrogen as reducing agent. The high catalytic activity of the bimetallic catalyst was attributed to the higher electron density of Pt species and more acidic sites of the alkali-treated ZSM-5 zeolite support. The recovery test showed no obvious loss of its initial activity of the Pt8Co1/ZSM-5-AT catalyst for five times.

Transition-metal-modified zeolites have recently gained the greatest interest among scientists. Ab initio calculations within the density functional theory were used. The exchange and correlation functional was approximated with the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) functional. Cluster models of ZSM-5 (Al 2 Si 18 O 53 H 26 ) zeolites were used with Fe particles adsorbed above aluminum. The adsorption of three iron adsorbates inside the pores of the ZSM-5 zeolite-Fe, FeO and FeOH-was carried out with different arrangements of aluminum atoms in the zeolite structure. The DOS diagram and the HOMO, SOMO and LUMO molecular orbitals for these systems were analyzed. It has been shown that depending on the adsorbate and the position of aluminum atoms in the pore structure of the zeolite, the systems can be described as insulators or conductors, which significantly affects their activity. The main aim of the research was to understand the behavior of these types of systems in order to select the most efficient one for a catalytic reaction.

Bisphenol A (4,4-isopropylidenediphenol, BPA) is an organic compound widely used, e.g., in the production of epoxy resins, plastics, and thermal receipt papers. Unfortunately, bisphenol A has negative effects on human health, which has prompted the search for an effective method of its removal. One of the most promising methods of its elimination is photocatalytic removal. The aim of this study was to design an effective method for the photocatalytic removal of bisphenol A using, for the first time, hierarchical zeolites and ruthenium ion-modified diatom biosilica, and silver as photocatalysts and optimization of the reaction conditions: temperature, pH, and composition of the reaction mixture as well as the electromagnetic wavelength. Additionally, for the first time, the electromagnetic wavelength that would be most suitable for the study was selected. All materials used were initially characterized by XRD and low-temperature nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms. Ruthenium ion-modified biosilica proved to be the most effective catalyst for bisphenol A removal, which occurred at a rate higher than 99%.

Vermicompost was used for humic acid (HA) preparation, and the adsorption of aflatoxin B 1 (AFB 1 ) was investigated. Two forms of HA were evaluated, natural HA and sodium-free HA (SFHA). As a reference, a non-commercial zeolitic material was employed. The adsorbents were characterized by attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), zeta potential (ζ-potential), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and point of zero charge (pHpzc). The adsorbent capacity of the materials when added to an AFB 1 -contaminated diet (100 µg AFB 1 /kg) was evaluated using an in vitro model that simulates the digestive tract of chickens. Characterization results revealed the primary functional groups in HA and SFHA were carboxyl and phenol. Furthermore, adsorbents have a highly negative ζ-potential at the three simulated pH values. Therefore, it appears the main influencing factors for AFB 1 adsorption are electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding. Moreover, the bioavailability of AFB 1 in the intestinal section was dramatically decreased when sorbents were added to the diet (0.2%, w / w ). The highest AFB 1 adsorption percentages using HA and SFHA were 97.6% and 99.7%, respectively. The zeolitic material had a considerable adsorption (81.5%). From these results, it can be concluded that HA and SFHA from vermicompost could be used as potential adsorbents to remove AFB 1 from contaminated feeds.

A magnetically functionalized Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-67 metal-organic framework (MOF) was prepared by electrostatic self-assembly using magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles as the core and ZIF-67 as the shell. The composite was characterized by electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier- transform infrared spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller measurements. Magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) was performed on five flavonoids from Dicranopteris pedata using Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-67 as an adsorbent. The developed MSPE method was combined with high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection to preconcentrate and separate five flavonoids (rutin, quercitrin, kaempferol-3-O-α-L-rhamnoside, quercetin, and kaempferol) from Dicranopteris pedata . The factors affecting the extraction, such as the amount of Fe 3 O 4 @ZIF-67 adsorbent, salt ion concentration in the sample solution, vortex time, type and amount of desorbing solvent, concentration of formic acid to acidify the desorbing solvent, and acetonitrile ratio, were optimized. The developed method showed good linearity over the concentration range of 1.09-70.0 μg∙mL -1 for the five flavonoids, with R 2 values between 0.9901 and 0.9945. The limits of detection and average recoveries for the five flavonoids were in the ranges of 39.5-56.2 ng∙mL -1 and 92.2-100.7%, respectively. The method presented herein is simple, efficient, and sensitive; it can be used for enrichment analysis of the five flavonoids in Dicranopteris pedata .

The detection of emerging contaminants in bodies of water has steadily increased in recent years, becoming a severe problem threatening human and ecosystem health. Developing new materials with adsorption properties to remove these pollutants represents an important step toward a potential solution. In this paper, a polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) nanofibrous membrane incorporating clinoptilolite zeolite was developed and its excellent performance in removing tetracycline (TC) and methylene blue (MB) from water was demonstrated. The composite membrane was prepared in two steps: firstly, a homogeneous dispersion of clinoptilolite (1 wt% respect to polymer) in a PBAT solution (12.6 wt%) was electrospun; secondly, the electrospun membrane was subjected to an acid treatment that improved its wettability through the protonation of the surface silanol groups of clinoptilolite. The resulting membrane was hydrophilic and showed higher adsorption for TC (800 mg/g) and MB (100 mg/g), using a low dose (90 mg/L) powdered zeolite. The maximum removal capacity was obtained at neutral pH, being the cation exchange reaction the main adsorption mechanism. Pseudo-second-order kinetics and Henry's law agree well with the proposed chemisorption and the high affinity of TC and MB for the adsorbent. The material can be reused after the removal process without generating additional contamination, although losing some effectivity.

In silico screening of 10,143 metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and 218 all-silica zeolites for adsorption-based and membrane-based He and N 2 separation was performed. As a result of geometry-based prescreening, structures having zero accessible surface area (ASA) and pore limiting diameter (PLD) less than 3.75 Å were eliminated. So, both gases can be adsorbed and pass-through MOF and zeolite pores. The Grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and equilibrium molecular dynamics (EMD) methods were used to estimate the Henry's constants and self-diffusion coefficients at infinite dilution conditions, as well as the adsorption capacity of an equimolar mixture of helium and nitrogen at various pressures. Based on the obtained results, adsorption, diffusion and membrane selectivities as well as membrane permeabilities were calculated. The separation potential of zeolites and MOFs was evaluated in the vacuum and pressure swing adsorption processes. In the case of membrane-based separation, we focused on the screening of nitrogen-selective membranes. MOFs were demonstrated to be more efficient than zeolites for both adsorption-based and membrane-based separation. The analysis of structure-performance relationships for using these materials for adsorption-based and membrane-based separation of He and N 2 made it possible to determine the ranges of structural parameters, such as pore-limiting diameter, largest cavity diameter, surface area, porosity, accessible surface area and pore volume corresponding to the most promising MOFs for each separation model discussed in this study. The top 10 most promising MOFs were determined for membrane-based, vacuum swing adsorption and pressure swing adsorption separation methods. The effect of the electrostatic interaction between the quadrupole moment of nitrogen molecules and MOF atoms on the main adsorption and diffusion characteristics was studied. The obtained results can be used as a guide for selection of frameworks for He/N 2 separation.

The possibility of crystallizing silicalite-1 (MFI) from the pore walls of as-synthesized MCM-41 via steam-assisted crystallization (SAC) was thoroughly investigated. A kinetic study was conducted through the impregnation of as-synthesized MCM-41 with the structure-directing agent tetrapropyl-ammonium hydroxide (TPAOH). Materials obtained after different SAC treatment times (1−288 h) were characterized by XRD, nitrogen physisorption at 77 K, TGA/DTA, and SEM. The achieved results allowed us to conclude that during SAC treatment, rapid destruction of the hexagonal mesophase occurs with the enlargement of mesopores, probably by their coalescence, until achieving non-porous amorphous silica. Only thereafter is the crystallization of the MFI phase evidenced through the development of micron-sized (>10 µm) MFI structured crystals. This study suggests the probable practical impossibility of even partial crystallization of the pore walls of mesoporous materials by SAC.

Numerous attempts have been made to produce new materials and technology for renewable energy and environmental improvements in response to global sustainable solutions stemming from fast industrial expansion and population growth. Zeolites are a group of crystalline materials having molecularly ordered micropore arrangements. Over the past few years, progress in zeolites has been observed in transforming biomass and waste into fuels. To ensure effective transition of fossil energy carriers into chemicals and fuels, zeolite catalysts play a key role; however, their function in biomass usage is more obscure. Herein, the effectiveness of zeolites has been discussed in the context of biomass transformation into valuable products. Established zeolites emphasise conversion of lignocellulosic materials into green fuels. Lewis acidic zeolites employ transition of carbohydrates into significant chemical production. Zeolites utilise several procedures, such as catalytic pyrolysis, hydrothermal liquefaction, and hydro-pyrolysis, to convert biomass and lignocelluloses. Zeolites exhibit distinctive features and encounter significant obstacles, such as mesoporosity, pore interconnectivity, and stability of zeolites in the liquid phase. In order to complete these transformations successfully, it is necessary to have a thorough understanding of the chemistry of zeolites. Hence, further examination of the technical difficulties associated with catalytic transformation in zeolites will be required. This review article highlights the reaction pathways for biomass conversion using zeolites, their challenges, and their potential utilisation. Future recommendations for zeolite-based biomass conversion are also presented.

Catalytic conversion of cellulose to liquid fuel and highly valuable platform chemicals remains a critical and challenging process. Here, bismuth-decorated β zeolite catalysts (Bi/β) were exploited for highly efficient hydrolysis and selective oxidation of cellulose to biomass-derived glycolic acid in an O 2 atmosphere, which exhibited an exceptionally catalytic activity and high selectivity as well as excellent reusability. It was interestingly found that as high as 75.6% yield of glycolic acid over 2.3 wt% Bi/β was achieved from cellulose at 180 °C for 16 h, which was superior to previously reported catalysts. Experimental results combined with characterization revealed that the synergetic effect between oxidation active sites from Bi species and surface acidity on H-β together with appropriate total surface acidity significantly facilitated the chemoselectivity towards the production of glycolic acid in the direct, one-pot conversion of cellulose. This study will shed light on rationally designing Bi-based heterogeneous catalysts for sustainably generating glycolic acid from renewable biomass resources in the future.

ZIF-67 is a three-dimensional zeolite imidazole ester framework material with a porous rhombic dodecahedral structure, a large specific surface area and excellent thermal stability. In this paper, the catalytic effect of ZIF-67 on five kinds of energetic materials, including RDX, HMX, CL-20, AP and the new heat-resistant energetic compound DAP-4, was investigated. It was found that when the mass fraction of ZIF-67 was 2%, it showed excellent performance in catalyzing the said compounds. Specifically, ZIF-67 reduced the thermal decomposition peak temperatures of RDX, HMX, CL-20 and DAP-4 by 22.3 °C, 18.8 °C, 4.7 °C and 10.5 °C, respectively. In addition, ZIF-67 lowered the low-temperature and high-temperature thermal decomposition peak temperatures of AP by 27.1 °C and 82.3 °C, respectively. Excitingly, after the addition of ZIF-67, the thermal decomposition temperature of the new heat-resistant high explosive DAP-4 declined by approximately 10.5 °C. In addition, the kinetic parameters of the RDX+ZIF-67, HMX+ZIF-67, CL-20+ZIF-67 and DAP-4+ZIF-67 compounds were analyzed. After the addition of the ZIF-67 catalyst, the activation energy of the four energetic materials decreased, especially HMX+ZIF-67, whose activation energy was approximately 190 kJ·mol -1 lower than that reported previously for HMX. Finally, the catalytic mechanism of ZIF-67 was summarized. ZIF-67 is a potential lead-free, green, insensitive and universal EMOFs-based energetic burning rate catalyst with a bright prospect for application in solid propellants in the future.

The organization of microporous space in zeolites is discussed. A new step-by-step model is proposed that explains the principles of organizing the hierarchy of microporous space at the stage of assembling zeolites from elements of minimal size: a primary building unit, secondary building units, tertiary building units or building polyhedra, a sodalite cage, and a supercage. To illustrate the stepwise hierarchical porous structure of nanomaterials, the following zeolites with small and large micropores have been selected as the model objects: sodalite (SOD, the maximum diameter of a sphere that can enter the pores is 0.3 nm) and zeolites of type A (LTA, the maximum diameter of a sphere that can enter the pores is 0.41 nm), type X, Y (FAU, the maximum diameter of a sphere that can enter the pores is 0.75 nm), and type BETA (the maximum diameter of a sphere that can enter the pores is 0.67 nm). Two-dimensional and three-dimensional modeling in 3Ds Max software was used. We believe that such an approach will be useful for developing ways to create complex zeolite compositions for specific applications, such as catalysis, where the geometry of the pores determines the size of the molecules entering the voids and computer modeling can play an important predictive role. This work takes a look at specific aspects of using the heat desorption method to study mesoporous materials with a BETA zeolite as an example and presents the results of experimental research into the characteristics of the porous structure of hierarchically structured zeolite materials (specific surface area 180-380 m 2 /g, external surface area 120-200 m 2 /g, micropore volume 0.001-0.1 mL/g).

Clinoptilolite and sodium polyacrylate (Na-PAA) were used as water-retaining agents to improve the water-holding capacity of compacted clay cover (CCC). The optimum moisture content and Atterberg limits of the CCC modified by clinoptilolite and Na-PAA were studied. The soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) of the CCC modified by clinoptilolite and Na-PAA was studied. The mesostructure of the CCC was analyzed by polarized light microscopy. The test results show that: (1) the optimum moisture content and liquid limit of the CCC modified by clinoptilolite and Na-PAA increased, while the maximum dry density decreased; (2) the SWCC of the CCC modified by clinoptilolite and Na-PAA shifts to the upper right, and the volume moisture content of modified CCC is higher than that of unmodified CCC under the same matrix suction; (3) compared with the unmodified CCC, the air-entry value (AEV) of the clinoptilolite-modified CCC increased by 65.18% at most, and the AEV of the further modified CCC with Na-PAA in-creased by about two times; and (4) the flocculation structure and porosity of modified CCC decreased, and the porosity was distributed uniformly.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are an important source of air pollution, harmful to human health and the environment, and important precursors of secondary organic aerosols, O 3 and photochemical smog. This study focused on the low-temperature catalytic oxidation and degradation of benzene, dichloroethane, methanethiol, methanol and methylamine by ozone. Benzene was used as a model compound, and a molecular sieve was selected as a catalyst carrier to prepare a series of supported active metal catalysts by impregnation. The effects of ozone on the catalytic oxidation of VOCs and catalysts' activity were studied. Taking benzene as a model compound, low-temperature ozone catalytic oxidation was conducted to explore the influence of the catalyst carrier, the active metal and the precious metal Pt on the catalytic degradation of benzene. The optimal catalyst appeared to be 0.75%Pt-10%Fe/HZSM(200). The catalytic activity and formation of the by-products methylamine, methanethiol, methanol, dichloroethane and benzene over 0.75%Pt-10%Fe/HZSM(200) were investigated. The structure, oxygen vacancy, surface properties and surface acidity of the catalysts were investigated. XRD, TEM, XPS, H 2 -TPR, EPR, CO 2 -TPD, BET, C 6 H 6 -TPD and Py-IR were combined to establish the correlation between the surface properties of the catalysts and the degradation activity.

The natural zeolite has been modified with sulphate and phosphate. The adsorption of thorium from the aqueous solutions by using the natural and modified zeolites has been investigated via a batch method. The adsorbent samples were characterized by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), N 2 adsorption-desorption (BET), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Modification of natural zeolite with sulphate and phosphate was found to increase its adsorption capacity of thorium but reduced its specific surface area (S BET ). The adsorption experiments were expressed by Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevitch (D-R) isotherm models and the results of adsorption demonstrated that the adsorption of thorium onto the natural and modified zeolites correlated better with the Langmuir isotherm model than with the Freundlich isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity (Qo) was determined using the Langmuir isotherm model at 25 °C and was found to be 17.27, 13.83, and 10.21 mg/g for phosphate-modified zeolite, sulfate-modified zeolite, and natural zeolite, respectively. The findings of this study indicate that phosphate-modified zeolite can be utilized as an effective and low-cost adsorbent material for the removal of thorium from aqueous solutions.

This study investigated the potential of zeolites (NH 4 BETA, NH 4 ZSM-5, and NaY) to remove two frequently used dyes, methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B (RB), from an aqueous environment. The removal of dyes with zeolites was performed via two mechanisms: adsorption and photocatalysis. Removal of dyes through adsorption was achieved by studying the Freundlich adsorption isotherms, while photocatalytic removal of dyes was performed under UV irradiation. In both cases, the removal experiments were conducted for 180 min at two temperatures (283 K and 293 K), and dye concentrations were determined spectrophotometrically. Additionally, after photodegradation, mineralization was analyzed as chemical oxygen demand. A computational analysis of the structures of MB and RB was performed to gain a deeper understanding of the obtained results. The computational analysis encompassed density functional theory (DFT) calculations and analysis of two quantum-molecular descriptors addressing the local reactivity of molecules. Experimental results have indicated that the considered zeolites effectively remove both dyes through both mechanisms, especially NH 4 BETA and NH 4 ZSM-5, due to the presence of active acidic centers on the outer and inner surfaces of the zeolite. The lowest efficiency of dye removal was achieved in the presence of NaY zeolite, which has a lower SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 ratio. Dihydromyricetin (DHM) has garnered attention due to its promising antitumor activity, but its low bioavailability restricts its clinical application. Thus, developing nano-drug delivery systems could enhance its antitumor activity. We prepared DHM@ZIF-8 nanoparticles using the zeolite imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) as a carrier loaded with dihydromyricetin. A series of characterizations were performed, including morphology, particle size, zeta potential, X-single crystal diffraction, ultraviolet spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). The in vitro release characteristics of DHM@ZIF-8 under pH = 5.0 and pH = 7.4 were studied using membrane dialysis. The antitumor activity and pro-apoptotic mechanism of DHM@ZIF-8 were investigated through CCK-8 assay, reactive oxygen species (ROS), Annexin V/PI double-staining, transmission electron microscopy, and Western blot. The results depicted that DHM@ZIF-8 possessed a regular morphology with a particle size of 211.07 ± 9.65 nm (PDI: 0.19 ± 0.06) and a Zeta potential of -28.77 ± 0.67 mV. The 24 h drug releasing rate in PBS solution at pH = 7.4 was 32.08% and at pH = 5.0 was 85.52% in a simulated tumor micro acid environment. DHM@ZIF-8 could significantly enhance the killing effect on HepG2 cells compared to the prodrug. It can effectively remove ROS from the tumor cells, promote apoptosis, and significantly affect the expression of apoptosis-related proteins within tumor cells.

In the present work, the capability of the volcanic tuff from Macicasu (Romania) to remove ammonia (NH 3 ) from air with different contamination levels during 24 h of adsorption experiments was investigated. The natural zeolitic volcanic tuff was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The adsorption capacities varied between 0.022 mg NH 3 g -1 zeolite and 0.282 mg NH 3 g -1 zeolite, depending on the NH 3 concentrations in the air and at the contact time. The nonlinear forms of the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were used to fit the experimental data. Additionally, the adsorption of NH 3 was studied using nonlinear pseudo-first-order (PFO), pseudo-second-order (PSO), and Elovich kinetic model. Based on the total volume of pores of used volcanic tuff, the NH 3 was removed from the air both due to the physical adsorption of NH 3 gas and the ion exchange of NH 4 + (resulted from a reaction between NH 3 and H 2 O adsorbed by the zeolite). Depending on the initial NH 3 concentration and the amount of volcanic tuff, the NH 3 concentrations can be reduced below the threshold of this contaminant in the air. The adsorption capacity of NH 3 per unit of zeolite (1 g) varied in the range of 0.022-0.282 mg NH 3 g -1 depending on the NH 3 concentration in the air.

Zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) is a promising platform for drug delivery, and information regarding the stability of ZIF-8 nanoparticles in cell culture media is essential for proper interpretation of in vitro experimental results. In this work, we report a quantitative investigation of the ZIF-8 nanoparticle's stability in most common cell culture media. To this purpose, ZIF-8 nanoparticles containing sterically shielded nitroxide probes with high resistance to reduction were synthesized and studied using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The degradation of ZIF-8 in cell media was monitored by tracking the cargo leakage. It was shown that nanoparticles degrade at least partially in all studied media, although the degree of cargo leakage varies widely. We found a strong correlation between the amount of escaped cargo and total concentration of amino acids in the environment. We also established the role of individual amino acids in ZIF-8 degradation. Finally, 2-methylimidazole preliminary dissolved in cell culture media partially inhibits the degradation of ZIF-8 nanoparticles. The guidelines for choosing the proper cell culture medium for the in vitro study of ZIF-8 nanoparticles have been formulated.

The commercially available zeolite HY and its desilicated analogue were subjected to a classical wet impregnation procedure with NH 4 VO 3 to produce catalysts differentiated in acidic and redox properties. Various spectroscopic techniques (in situ probe molecules adsorption and time-resolved propane transformation FT-IR studies, XAS, 51 V MAS NMR, and 2D COS UV-vis) were employed to study speciation, local coordination, and reducibility of the vanadium species introduced into the hierarchical faujasite zeolite. The acid-based redox properties of V centres were linked to catalytic activity in the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane. The modification of zeolite via caustic treatment is an effective method of adjusting its basicity-a parameter that plays an important role in the ODH process. The developed mesopore surface ensured the attachment of vanadium species to silanol groups and formation of isolated (SiO) 2 (HO)V=O and (SiO) 3 V=O sites or polymeric, highly dispersed forms located in the zeolite micropores. The higher basicity of HY deSi , due to the presence of the Al-rich shell, aided the activation of the C-H bond leading to a higher selectivity to propene. Its polymerisation and coke formation were inhibited by the lower acid strength of the protonic sites in desilicated zeolite. The Al-rich shell was also beneficial for anchoring V species and thus their reducibility. The operando UV-vis experiments revealed higher reactivity of the bridging oxygens V-O-V over the oxo-group V=O. The (SiO) 3 V=O species were found to be ineffective in propane oxidation when temperature does not exceed 400 °C.

Ozone has been successfully employed in water treatment due to its ability to oxidize a wide variety of refractory compounds. In order to increase the process efficiency and optimize its economy, the implementation of heterogeneous catalysts has been encouraged. In this context, the use of cheap and widely available natural materials is a promising option that would promote the utilization of ozone in a cost-effective water treatment process. This review describes the use of natural clays, zeolites and oxides as supports or active catalysts in the ozonation process, with emphasis on the structural characteristics and modifications performed in the raw natural materials; the catalytic oxidation mechanism; effect of the operating parameters and degradation efficiency outcomes. According to the information compiled, more research in realistic scenarios is needed (i.e., real wastewater matrix or continuous operation in pilot scale) in order to transfer this technology to the treatment of real wastewater streams.

We use computational materials methods to study the sequential appearance of zinc-based zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) generated in the mechanochemical conversion process. We consider nine ZIF topologies, namely RHO, ANA, QTZ, SOD, KAT, DIA, NEB, CAG and GIS, combined with the two ligands 2-methylimidazolate and 2-ethylimidazolate. Of the 18 combinations obtained, only six (three for each ligand) were actually observed during the mechanosynthesis process. Energy and porosity calculations based on density functional theory, in combination with the Ostwald rule of stages, were found to be insufficient to distinguish the experimentally observed ZIFs. We then show, using classical molecular dynamics, that only ZIFs withstanding quasi-hydrostatic pressure P ≥ 0.3 GPa without being destroyed were observed in the laboratory. This finding, along with the requirement that successive ZIFs be generated with decreasing porosity and/or energy, provides heuristic rules for predicting the sequences of mechanically generated ZIFs for the two ligands considered.

Heparin is one of the most valuable active pharmaceutical ingredients, and it is generally isolated from porcine intestinal mucosa. Traditionally, different types of commercial resins are employed as an adsorbent for heparin uptake; however, using new, less expensive adsorbents has attracted more interest in the past few years to enhance the heparin recovery. Zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), as a metal-organic framework (MOF) with a high surface area, porosity, and good stability at high temperatures, was selected to examine the heparin recovery. In this research, we demonstrate that ZIF-8 can recover up to ~70% (37 mg g -1 ) of heparin from porcine intestinal mucosa. A mechanistic study through kinetic and thermodynamic models on the adsorption revealed appropriate surface conditions for the adsorption of heparin molecules. The effect of different variables such as pH and temperature on heparin adsorption was also studied to optimize the recovery. This study is the first to investigate the usage of MOFs for heparin uptake.

A chabazite-type zeolite was prepared by the hydrothermal method. Before ion exchange, the chabazite was activated with ammonium chloride (NH 4 Cl). The ion exchange process was carried out at a controlled temperature and constant stirring to obtain ion-exchanged chabazites of Ti 4+ chabazite (TiCHA), Zn 2+ chabazite (ZnCHA), Cu 2+ chabazite (CuCHA), Ag + chabazite (AgCHA) and Au 3+ chabazite (AuCHA). Modified chabazite samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope equipped with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), N 2 adsorption methods and UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). XRD results revealed that the chabazite structure did not undergo any modification during the exchange treatments. The photocatalytic activity of chabazite samples was evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue (MB) in the presence of H 2 O 2 under ultraviolet (UV) light illumination. The photodegradation results showed a higher degradation efficiency of modified chabazites, compared to the synthesized chabazite. CuCHA showed an efficiency of 98.92% in MB degradation, with a constant of k = 0.0266 min -1 following a first-order kinetic mechanism. Then, it was demonstrated that the modified chabazites could be used for the photodegradation of dyes.

Zeolites and zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are widely studied as drug carrying nanoplatforms to enhance the specificity and efficacy of traditional anticancer drugs. At present, there is no other systematic review that assesses the potency of zeolites/ZIFs as anticancer drug carriers. Due to the porous nature and inherent pH-sensitive properties of zeolites/ZIFs, the compounds can entrap and selectively release anticancer drugs into the acidic tumor microenvironment. Therefore, it is valuable to provide a comprehensive overview of available evidence on the topic to identify the benefits of the compound as well as potential gaps in knowledge. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential therapeutic applications of zeolites/ZIFs as drug delivery systems delivering doxorubicin (DOX), 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), curcumin, cisplatin, and miR-34a. Following PRISMA guidelines, an exhaustive search of PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science was conducted. No language or time limitations were used up to 25th August 2021. Only full text articles were selected that pertained to the usage of zeolites/ZIFs in delivering anticancer drugs. Initially, 1279 studies were identified, of which 572 duplicate records were excluded. After screening for the title, abstract, and full texts, 53 articles remained and were included in the qualitative synthesis. An Inter-Rater Reliability (IRR) test, which included a percent user agreement and reliability percent, was conducted for the 53 articles. The included studies suggest that anticancer drug-incorporated zeolites/ZIFs can be used as alternative treatment options to enhance the efficacy of cancer treatment by mitigating the drawbacks of drugs under conventional treatment.

A novel diatomite-supported zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 sorbent (ZIF-8@Dt-COOH) was in situ fabricated and developed for solid-phase extraction of three benzodiazepines (triazolam, midazolam and diazepam) in urine followed by high-performance liquid chromatography. ZIF-8@Dt-COOH was easily prepared by coating ZIF-8 on the surface of Dt-COOH and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra, X-ray powder diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy. Compared with bare Dt-COOH, the extraction efficiency of ZIF-8@Dt-COOH for the target was significantly increased from 20.1-39.0% to 100%. Main extraction parameters, including ionic strength and pH of solution, loading volume, washing solution, elution solvent and elution volume, were optimized in detail. Under optimum conditions, the developed method gave linearity of three BZDs in 2-500 ng/mL ( r ≥ 0.9995). Limits of detection ( S/N = 3), and limits of quantification ( S/N = 10) were 0.3-0.4 ng/mL and 1.0-1.3 ng/mL, respectively. In addition, the average recoveries at three spiked levels (5, 10 and 20 ng/mL) varied from 80.0% to 98.7%, with the intra-day and inter-day precisions of 1.4-5.2% and 1.5-8.2%, respectively. The proposed method provided an effective purification performance and gave the enrichment factors of 24.0-29.6. The proposed method was successfully employed for the accurate and sensitive determination of benzodiazepines in urine.

Hierarchical crystals with short diffusion path, conventional microcrystals and nanocrystals of ZSM-5 zeolites were used for biodiesel production from waste frying oils and were assessed for their catalytic activity in regard to their pore structure and acidic properties. Produced zeolites were characterized using XRD, nitrogen adsorption-desorption, SEM, TEM, X-ray fluorescence, and FTIR. Pore size effect on molecular diffusion limitation was assessed by Thiele modulus calculations and turnover frequencies (TOF) were used to discuss the correlation between acidic character and catalytic performance of the zeolites. Owing to the enhanced accessibility and mass transfer of triglycerides and free fatty acids to the elemental active zeolitic structure, the catalytic performance of nanosponge and nanosheet hierarchical zeolites was the highest. A maximum yield of 48.29% was reached for the transesterification of waste frying oils (WFOs) using HZSM-5 nanosheets at 12:1 methanol to WFOs molar ratio, 180 °C, 10 wt % catalyst loading, and 4 h reaction time. Although HZSM-5 nanosponges achieved high conversions, these more hydrophilic zeolites did not function according to their entire acidic strength in comparison to HZSM-5 nanosheets. NSh-HZSM5 catalytic performance was still high after 4 consecutive cycles as a result of the zeolite regeneration.

Background: The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of modified clinoptilolite (Minazel Plus ® , MZ) as a mycotoxin adsorbent for preventing the negative the effects of ochratoxin A (OTA) on performance, pathohistological changes, and OTA residue in the eggs of laying hens., Methods: Forty eight ( n = 48) laying hens (27 weeks old) were equally divided into six groups and depending on the type of addition were allocated to the following experimental treatments for 7 weeks: E-I group-1 mg/kg OTA; E-II group 0.25 mg/kg OTA; E-III group 1 mg/kg OTA + 0.2% of MZ; E-IV group 0.25 mg/kg OTA + 0.2% of MZ; MZ group supplemented with 0.2% of the adsorbent; and control (K, without feed additive)., Results: Overall, the addition of 0.2% MZ to laying hen feed mitigated the harmful effects of OTA on target organs and reduced the presence of OTA residue in eggs. The groups that received 0.2% of MZ achieved better production results in terms of body weight, number of eggs, and feed consumption, compared to the other treatments., Conclusions: The current findings confirm the efficacy of MZ in preventing performance losses in laying hens exposed to OTA, as well as for improving the welfare and health of food producing animals.
