Pavement texture and skid resistance are pivotal surface features of roadway to traffic safety, especially under wet weather. Engineering interventions should be scheduled periodically to restore these features as they deteriorate over time under traffic polishing. While many studies have investigated the effects of traffic polishing on pavement texture and skid resistance through laboratory experiments, the absence of real-world traffic and environmental factors in these studies may limit the generalization of their findings. This study addresses this research gap by conducting a comprehensive field study of pavement texture and skid resistance under traffic polishing in the real world. A total of thirty pairs of pavement texture and friction data were systematically collected from three distinct locations with different levels of traffic polishing (middle, right wheel path, and edge) along an asphalt pavement in Oklahoma, USA. Data acquisition utilized a laser imaging device to reconstruct 0.01 mm 3D images to characterize pavement texture and a Dynamic Friction Tester to evaluate pavement friction at different speeds. Twenty 3D areal parameters were calculated on whole images, macrotexture images, and microtexture images to investigate the effects of traffic polishing on pavement texture from different perspectives. Then, texture parameters and testing speeds were combined to develop friction prediction models via linear and nonlinear methodologies. The results indicate that Random Forest models with identified inputs achieved excellent performance for non-contact friction evaluation. Last, the friction decrease rate was discussed to estimate the timing of future maintenance to restore skid resistance. The application range of potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) crystals can be expanded by enhancing their surface quality properties. Therefore, a method for controlling the surface-temperature field of various materials was developed to expand the plastic zone to overcome the difficulty in processing KDP crystals. The ductile/brittle transition depth of the KDP crystals was determined using a 38 nm nanoindentation experiment. The nanoscratch experiment revealed the rules of how the transformation depth of the KDP crystals changes with temperatures, and the effect of temperature on the microstructure of the KDP crystals was studied. Finally, KDP crystal surfaces were processed using a UPDFC machine at elevated temperatures. According to our experiments, the surface roughness of the KDP crystal reached 5.275 nm as temperature increased, thus enhancing its surface quality. Traditionally, pavement safety performance in terms of texture, friction, and hydroplaning speed are measured separately via different devices with various limitations. This study explores the feasibility of using a novel 0.1 mm 3D Safety Sensor for pavement safety evaluation in a non-contact and continuous manner with a single hardware sensor. The 0.1 mm 3D images were collected for pavement safety measurement from 12 asphalt concrete (AC) and Portland cement concrete (PCC) field sites with various texture characteristics. The results indicate that the Safety Sensor was able to measure pavement texture data as traditional devices do with better repeatability. Moreover, pavement friction numbers can be estimated using 0.1 mm 3D data via the proposed 3D texture parameters with good accuracy using an artificial neural network, especially for asphalt pavement. Lastly, a case study of pavement hydroplaning speed prediction was performed using the Safety Sensor. The results demonstrate the potential of using ultra high-resolution 3D imaging to measure pavement safety, including texture, friction, and hydroplaning, in a non-contact, continuous, and accurate manner. Pavement micro- and macro-texture have significant effects on roadway friction and driving safety. The influence of traffic polish on pavement texture has been investigated in many laboratory studies. This paper conducts field evaluation of pavement micro- and macro-texture under actual traffic polishing using three-dimensional (3D) areal parameters. A portable high-resolution 3D laser scanner measured pavement texture from a field site in 2018, 2019, and 2020. Then, the 3D texture data was decomposed to micro- and macro-texture using Fourier transform and Butterworth filter methods. Twenty 3D areal parameters from five categories, including height, spatial, hybrid, function, and feature parameters, were calculated to characterize pavement micro- and macro-texture. The results demonstrate that the 3D areal parameters provide an alternative to comprehensively characterize the evolution of pavement texture under traffic polish from different aspects. Skid resistance is an important surface characteristic that influences roadway safety. Various studies have been performed to understand the interaction between pavement and tires through numerical simulation for skid resistance prediction. However, the friction parameters required for simulation inputs are generally determined by objective assumptions. This paper develops a finite element method (FEM)-based skid resistance simulation framework using in-situ 3D pavement surface texture and skid resistance data. A 3D areal pavement model is reconstructed from high resolution asphalt pavement surface texture data. The exponential decay friction model is implemented in the simulation and the interface friction parameters required for the simulation are determined using the binary search back-calculation approach based on a trial process with the desired level of differences between simulated and observed skid numbers. To understand the influence of texture characteristics on interface friction parameters, the high-resolution 3D texture data is separated into macro- and micro-scales through Butterworth filtering and various areal texture indicators are calculated at both levels. Principal component analysis (PCA) regression analysis is conducted to quantify the relationship between various texture characteristics and the interface friction parameters. The aim of this study was to determine how the mulberry (Morus notabilis) polyphenol oxidase 1 gene (MnPPO1) is regulated during plant stress responses by exploring the interaction between its promoter region and regulatory transcription factors. First, we analyzed the cis-acting elements in the MnPPO1 promoter. Then, we used the MnPPO1 promoter region [(1268 bp, including an MYB3R-binding cis-element (MSA)] as a probe to capture proteins in DNA pull-down assays. These analyses revealed that the MYB3R1 transcription factor in M. notabilis (encoded by MnMYB3R1) binds to the MnPPO1 promoter region. We further explored the interaction between the MnPPO1 promoter and MYB3R1 with the dual luciferase reporter, yeast one-hybrid, and chromatin immunoprecipitation assays. These analyses verified that MnMYB3R1 binds to the MSA in the MnPPO1 promoter region. The overexpression of MnMYB3R1 in tobacco upregulated the expression of the tobacco PPO gene. This observation as well as the quantitative real-time PCR results implied that MnMYB3R1 and PPO are involved in the abscisic acid-responsive stress response pathway. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
