As a key strategy for achieving a circular economy, remanufacturing involves bringing end-of-use (EoU) products or cores back to a 'like new' condition, providing more affordable and sustainable alternatives to new products. Despite the potential for substantial resources and energy savings, the industry faces operational challenges. These challenges arise from uncertainties surrounding core quality and functionality, return times, process variation required to meet product specifications, and the end-of-use (EoU) product values, as well as their new life expectancy after extended use as a 'market product'. While remanufacturing holds immense promise, its full potential can only be realized through concerted efforts towards resolving the inherent complexities and obstacles that impede its operations. Machine learning (ML) and data-driven models emerge as transformative tools to mitigate numerous challenges encountered by manufacturing industry. Recently, the integration of cutting-edge technologies, such as sensor-based product data acquisition and storage, data analytics, machine health management, artificial intelligence (AI)-driven scheduling, and human–robot collaboration (HRC), in remanufacturing procedures has received significant attention from remanufacturers and the circular economy community. These advanced computational technologies help remanufacturers to implement flexible operation scheduling, enhance quality control, and streamline workflows for EoU products. This study embarks on a comprehensive review and in-depth analysis of state-of-the-art algorithms across various facets of remanufacturing processes and operations. Additionally, it identifies key challenges to advancing remanufacturing practices through data-driven and ML methods and uncovers research opportunities in synergy with smart manufacturing techniques. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disorder characterized by widespread inflammation and multi-organ damage. Toll-like receptor 7 (TLR-7) and autophagy have been implicated in SLE pathogenesis. Rice husk silica liquid (RHSL) has shown potential for modulating inflammatory responses, but its effects on SLE have not been thoroughly investigated. This study aims to evaluate the impact of RHSL on immune responses and autophagy in cell culture experiments, focusing on its effects on TLR-7 signaling, cytokine production, and autophagy modulation. RAW264.7 cells and human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from healthy donors and SLE patients were used. Cells were stimulated with LPS or TLR-7 agonists and treated with RHSL. Cell viability was assessed, and cytokine levels (TNF-α and IL-6) were measured by ELISA. Autophagy-related proteins (LC3II, ATG5-ATG12) were analyzed by Western blotting. The effect of autophagy inhibition was studied using 3-methyladenine (3-MA). A concentration of 100 μg/mL RHSL did not affect cell viability but significantly reduced the TNF-α production in TLR-7 agonist-stimulated RAW264.7 cells (compared to TLR-7 alone, 3.41 ± 0.54 vs. 6.72 ± 0.07 folds) and PBMCs (compared to TLR-7 alone, 0.97 ± 0.19 vs. 1.40 ± 0.33 folds). RHSL enhanced autophagy, as evidenced by increased LC3II (4.35 ± 1.08 folds) and ATG5-ATG12 (7.07 ± 1.30 folds) conjugation in both RAW264.7 cells and SLE patient-derived PBMCs. The reduction in TNF-α production by RHSL was attenuated by 3-MA, indicating that autophagy plays a role in this process. RHSL also inhibited the translocation of phosphorylated NF-κB into the nucleus, suggesting a mechanism for its anti-inflammatory effects. RHSL exhibits potential as an immunomodulatory agent in SLE by enhancing autophagy and modulating TLR-7 signaling pathways. Diagnostic imaging, particularly MRI, plays a key role in the evaluation of many spine pathologies. Recent progress in artificial intelligence and its subset, machine learning, has led to many applications within spine MRI, which we sought to examine in this review. A literature search of the major databases (PubMed, MEDLINE, Web of Science, ClinicalTrials.gov) was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The search yielded 1226 results, of which 50 studies were selected for inclusion. Key data from these studies were extracted. Studies were categorized thematically into the following: Image Acquisition and Processing, Segmentation, Diagnosis and Treatment Planning, and Patient Selection and Prognostication. Gaps in the literature and the proposed areas of future research are discussed. Current research demonstrates the ability of artificial intelligence to improve various aspects of this field, from image acquisition to analysis and clinical care. We also acknowledge the limitations of current technology. Future work will require collaborative efforts in order to fully exploit new technologies while addressing the practical challenges of generalizability and implementation. In particular, the use of foundation models and large-language models in spine MRI is a promising area, warranting further research. Simple Summary: In recent years, advances in deep learning have transformed the analysis of medical imaging, especially in spine oncology. Computed Tomography (CT) imaging is crucial for diagnosing, planning treatment, and monitoring spinal tumors. This review aims to comprehensively explore the current uses of deep learning tools in CT-based spinal oncology. Additionally, potential clinical applications of AI designed to address common challenges in this field will also be addressed. In spinal oncology, integrating deep learning with computed tomography (CT) imaging has shown promise in enhancing diagnostic accuracy, treatment planning, and patient outcomes. This systematic review synthesizes evidence on artificial intelligence (AI) applications in CT imaging for spinal tumors. A PRISMA-guided search identified 33 studies: 12 (36.4%) focused on detecting spinal malignancies, 11 (33.3%) on classification, 6 (18.2%) on prognostication, 3 (9.1%) on treatment planning, and 1 (3.0%) on both detection and classification. Of the classification studies, 7 (21.2%) used machine learning to distinguish between benign and malignant lesions, 3 (9.1%) evaluated tumor stage or grade, and 2 (6.1%) employed radiomics for biomarker classification. Prognostic studies included three (9.1%) that predicted complications such as pathological fractures and three (9.1%) that predicted treatment outcomes. AI's potential for improving workflow efficiency, aiding decision-making, and reducing complications is discussed, along with its limitations in generalizability, interpretability, and clinical integration. Future directions for AI in spinal oncology are also explored. Simple Summary: Early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is notorious for its high recurrence rate even after curative treatment. Several studies have suggested the association between diabetes mellitus (DM) and the risk of HCC. However, current evidence regarding the impact of glycemic burden on the outcomes of HCC is still limited. The present study provides an important insight into the relationship between glycemic burden and outcomes of early-stage HCC. Lower glycemic burden was an independent factor associated with better overall survival as well as lower recurrence in early-stage HCC. Moreover, there was a dose–response relationship between recurrence/overall survival and glycemic burden. Good glycemic control should be considered as a significant part of HCC management. Early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is still difficult to cure for its high recurrence rate. This study aimed to examine whether glycemic burden management could be one way to improve outcomes of early-stage HCC. A total of 137 very early or early-stage HCC patients who underwent resection or ablation at Samsung Medical Center and had glycemic burden assessment were analyzed. Glycemic burden was assessed using hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level. Outcomes were recurrence and overall survival. Risks of recurrence and overall survival were compared according to glycemic burden using a cut-off point of 6.5% or two cut-off points of 6.0% and 7.5%. Overall, 51 (37.2%) patients experienced HCC recurrence. The adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) for recurrence comparing patients with HbA1c > 6.5% to those with HbA1c ≤ 6.5% was 2.66 (95% CI: 1.26–5.78). The risk of recurrence increased in a dose-dependent manner by glycemic burden; aHR for 6.0 < HbA1c ≤ 7.5%: 2.00 (95% CI: 0.78–5.55); aHR for HbA1c > 7.5%: 6.05 (95% CI: 2.31–17.5). Mortality was observed in 16 (11.7%) patients. The risk of mortality was higher for HbA1c > 6.5% than for HbA1c ≤ 6.5% (aHR: 2.33; 95% CI: 1.10–5.08). There was also a dose–response relationship between overall survival and glycemic burden. Glycemic burden assessed using HbA1c level was significantly associated with outcomes of early-stage HCC patients. This paper aims to enhance the existing Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) technologies for utilities in the public services sector, such as water, electricity, and gas, by allowing users to regularly upload images of their meters, which are then automatically processed by machines for digit recognition. We propose an end-to-end AMR approach designed explicitly for unconstrained environments, offering practical solutions to common failures encountered during the automatic recognition process, such as image blur, perspective distortion, partial reflection, poor lighting, missing digits, and intermediate digit states, to reduce the failure rate of automatic meter readings. The system's first stage involves checking the quality of the user-uploaded images through the SVM method and requesting re-uploads for images unsuitable for digit extraction and recognition. The second stage employs deep learning models for digit localization and recognition, automatically detecting and correcting issues such as missing and intermediate digits to enhance the accuracy of automatic meter readings. Our research established a gas meter training dataset comprising 52,000 images, extensively annotated across various degrees, to train the deep learning models for high-precision digit recognition. Experimental results demonstrate that, with the simple SVM model, an accuracy of 87.03% is achieved for the classification of blurry image types. In addition, meter digit recognition (including intermediate digit states) can reach 97.6% (mAP), and the detection and correction of missing digits can be as high as 63.64%, showcasing the practical application value of the system developed in this study. Most anesthetics reduce cardiac functions and lower blood pressure (BP), potentially causing excessive BP reduction in dehydrated patients or those with heart conditions, such as coronary artery disease (CAD). Considering the increased prevalence of cardiovascular disease with age, anesthesiologists must be cautious about BP reduction during general anesthesia in older adults. In the present case, a 76-year-old male patient with undiagnosed CAD in a hypovolemic state experienced a significant drop in systolic BP to the fifties during propofol and sevoflurane anesthesia. Despite the use of vasopressors, excessive hypotension persisted, leading to anesthesia suspension. Subsequent cardiac examinations, including computed tomography heart angio and calcium score, and coronary angiogram, revealed a near total occlusion of the proximal left anterior descending coronary artery (pLAD) and the formation of collateral circulation. After 5 days of hydration and anticoagulation medications and confirmation of normovolemic state, general anesthesia was attempted again and successfully induced; a normal BP was maintained throughout the surgery. The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate a self-microemulsifying drug delivery system (SMEDDS) to improve the oral absorption of poorly water-soluble olaparib. Through the solubility test of olaparib in various oils, surfactants and co-surfactants, pharmaceutical excipients were selected. Self-emulsifying regions were identified by mixing the selected materials at various ratios, and a pseudoternary phase diagram was constructed by synthesizing these results. The various physicochemical properties of microemulsion incorporating olaparib were confirmed by investigating the morphology, particle size, zeta potential, drug content and stability. In addition, the improved dissolution and absorption of olaparib were also confirmed through a dissolution test and a pharmacokinetic study. An optimal microemulsion was generated in the formulation of Capmul® MCM 10%, Labrasol® 80% and PEG 400 10%. The fabricated microemulsions were well-dispersed in aqueous solutions, and it was also confirmed that they were maintained well without any problems of physical or chemical stability. The dissolution profiles of olaparib were significantly improved compared to the value of powder. Associated with the high dissolutions of olaparib, the pharmacokinetic parameters were also greatly improved. A classical problem with Cu-based shape memory alloys (SMAs) is brittle fracture at triple junctions. This alloy possesses a martensite structure at room temperature and usually comprises elongated variants. Previous studies have shown that introducing reinforcement into the matrix can refine grains and break martensite variants. Grain refinement diminishes brittle fracture at triple junctions, whereas breaking the martensite variants can negatively affect the shape memory effect (SME), owing to martensite stabilization. Furthermore, the additive element may coarsen the grains under certain circumstances if the material has a lower thermal conductivity than the matrix, even when a small amount is distributed in the composite. Powder bed fusion is a favorable approach that allows the creation of intricate structures. In this study, Cu–Al–Ni SMA samples were locally reinforced with alumina (Al2O3), which has excellent biocompatibility and inherent hardness. The reinforcement layer was composed of 0.3 and 0.9 wt% Al2O3 mixed with a Cu–Al–Ni matrix, deposited around the neutral plane within the built parts. Two different thicknesses of the deposited layers were investigated, revealing that the failure mode during compression was strongly influenced by the thickness and reinforcement content. The optimized failure mode led to an increase in fracture strain, and therefore, a better SME of the sample, which was locally reinforced by 0.3 wt% alumina under a thicker reinforcement layer. Banana peel (BP) has potent antioxidative properties; however, the anti-inflammatory potential of BP and its related bioactive components remain unclear. This study used solvent extraction and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) to isolate and identify the active fractions and compounds in BP. BP was extracted with 95% ethanol (BP-95E) and partitioned with an ethyl acetate (EA) and water mixture to obtain the BP-95E-EA and BP-95E-H2O fractions. The BP-95E-EA fractions were further partitioned with n-hexane (Hex) and methanol (MeOH) mixtures to obtain BP-95E-EA-Hex and BP-95E-EA-MeOH subfractions, and the BP-95E-H2O fractions were partitioned with n-butanol (BuOH) to obtain BP-95E-H2O-BuOH subfractions and the H2O residual. The results show that the BP-95E-H2O-BuOH subfractions exhibited the most potent inhibition of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) secretion while down-regulating inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) protein expression in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages. In this active subfraction, five non-polyphenol compounds were identified, namely, 5-hydroxyethyl furfural (5-HMF), guaiol, oleic acid, linoleic acid, and oleamide. 5-HMF, guaiol, and oleamide were the most effective at suppressing IL-6 and TNF-α secretion. The in vivo immunomodulatory action of BP was evaluated in an LPS-induced endotoxemia model of BALB/c mice. Oral administration of BP-95E-H2O-BuOH extracts (42 and 166 mg/kg b.w.) for two weeks lowered the serum levels of IL-6 and TNF-α and normalized the activated T-cell population, as evidenced by an increase in CD3CD69 and decrease in IFN-γ/IL-4 (Th1/Th2) in mice with systemic inflammation. Lupus nephritis (LN) is a common and serious symptom in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Tubular interstitial fibrosis is a common underlying mechanism in the development of lupus nephritis to end-stage renal failure (ESRD). Quercetin is widely proven to prevent tissue fibrosis. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the beneficial effects of quercetin on the inhibition of fibrosis and inflammation pathways in in vitro and in vivo lupus nephritis models. In the current study, MRL/lpr mice as animal models, and HK-2 human renal tubular epithelial cells were stimulated by interleukin-33 (IL-33) to mimic the cellular model of lupus nephritis. Immunohistochemical staining, immunoblotting assay, immunofluorescence staining, and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction assay were used. The in vivo results showed that quercetin improved the renal function and inhibited both fibrosis- and inflammation-related markers in MRL/lpr mice animal models. The in vitro results indicated that quercetin ameliorated the accumulation of fibrosis- and inflammation-related proteins in IL-33-induced HK-2 cells and improved renal cell pyroptosis via the IL33/ST2 pathway. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a complex multifactorial disease characterized by poor glucose tolerance and insulin resistance. Rice-husk silica liquid (RHSL) derived from rice husk has the ability to improve the dysfunction of pancreatic β-cells. This study aimed to confirm the potential protective effects of RHSL in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice. Diabetes was induced in male C57BL/6J mice by intraperitoneal administration of STZ (200 mg/kg BW). RHSL, food-grade silica liquid (FDSL), and rosiglitazone (RSG) were administered to diabetic mice for 12 weeks after successful induction of diabetes. During the experiment, fasting blood glucose, serum insulin, and organ weights were measured. The histopathology of liver tissue was evaluated by H&E staining. Western blotting was performed to assess protein expression levels. The results showed that RHSL significantly reversed the serum insulin levels and improved oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) results (p < 0.05). In addition, liver sections of STZ-induced diabetic mice after RHSL treatment showed neatly arranged and intact hepatocytes. Furthermore, RHSL was more effective than FDSL in increasing the expression of SIRT1 and decreasing the expression of the PPAR-γ and p-NF-κB proteins. The quantity and quality of runoff from green roofs have so far been studied using an extensive vegetated roof (substrate depth > 150 mm). However, studies on various substrate depths and vegetation for runoff and phytoremediation in temperate and monsoon climates, where heavy rain is concentrated in a specific season, are limited. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate combined effects of substrate depth and vegetation of an unfertilized green roof on runoff reduction and airborne pollutant purification based on rainfall intensity. A total of 21 plots were implemented on a roof top with three substrate depths (100, 200, and 400 mm), two vegetation s (vegetated or non-vegetated), and control (plot with standard frame only). The runoff reduction increased significantly (p < 0.05) with increasing substrate depth. Vegetated plots had a slightly higher runoff reduction than plots without vegetation. Compared to controls, turbidity and pH tended to increase regardless of vegetation or substrate depth, with the exception of electrical conductivity (EC). However, concentrations of heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Mn, and Cd) in the runoff of vegetated plots were all significantly (p < 0.05) lower than those of un-vegetated plots and controls. These results suggest that as the rainfall intensity increases, the depth of the substrate is more important than vegetation for runoff reduction. In addition, the vegetation can be an effective tool to neutralize acid rain to stabilize pH and effectively reduce EC and heavy metals in the runoff by remediating dissolved air pollutants from rainwater. Urban agriculture is an important part of the food and nutrition security of many cities and is growing in importance, especially with social disruptions such as climate change and pandemics. Plant foods, in particular, provide bioactive compounds and other essential nutrients. Therefore, it is important to provide timely and useful research resources to horticultural sector and food-related industries that want to produce high-quality plant foods at low cost to meet the market demands of urban agriculture. This study focuses on up-to-date information on urban agriculture, the mechanisms of production of bioactive compounds in plant foods, and the main factors influencing the levels of bioactive compounds in plant foods. As a strategy to improve the bioactive compounds of plant foods in urban agriculture, the recent trends in urban agriculture were investigated according to four categories: ground-based uncontrolled or controlled agriculture and building-integrated uncontrolled or controlled agriculture. In ground-based urban agriculture, the application of short-term abiotic or biotic stresses, such as agronomic management practices, can significantly affect the bioactive compound levels in fruits and vegetables. On the other hand, in building-integrated urban agriculture, horticultural scientists have been interested in artificial lighting, cultivation medium, and water use efficiency to improve the level and composition of functional components of plants. The future trend of urban agriculture is expected to change from ground-based to building integration considering the sustainability of agriculture. The surface plasmonic resonance, surface wettability, and related mechanical nanohardness and of face-centered-cubic (fcc) chromium nitride (CrN) films have been successfully manipulated via the simple method of tuning nitrogen-containing gas with different nitrogen-to-argon ratios, varying from 3.5 (N35), to 4.0 (N40), to 4.5 (N45), which is directly proportional to argon. All of the obtained CrN films showed that the surface wettability was due to hydrophilicity. All of the characteristics were mainly confirmed and explained by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, including plan-view and cross-section SEM images, with calculations of the average grain size performed via histograms accompanied by different preferred grain orientations. In the present work, not only the surface plasmonic resonance, but also the surface wettability and the related mechanical nanohardness of CrN films were found to be tunable via a simple method of introducing adjustable nitrogen-reactive-containing gas during the deposition process, while the authors suggest that the crystal orientation transition from the (111) to the (200) crystalline plane changed significantly with the nitrogen-containing gas. So the transition of the preferred orientation of CrN's cubic close-packed from (111) to (200) varied at this composite, caused and found by the nitrogen-containing gas, which can be tuned by the nitrogen-to-argon ratio. The surface plasmonic resonance and photoluminescence quenching effects were coupled photon and electron oscillations, which could be observed, and which existed at the interface between the CrN and Au metals in the designed heterostructures. The "Korean New Deal" policy in South Korea emphasizes the necessity of a substantial and timely response to global climate change. In addition to carbon emissions, construction materials have various environmental impacts that necessitate serious considerations. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the major environmental impact categories of construction materials that reflect their diverse environmental impact characteristics using life cycle assessment. To this end, eight environmental impact categories were assessed for seven major construction materials. The contributions of all construction materials to these environmental impact categories were then analyzed to derive major environmental impact categories with contributions ≥95% or higher for each construction material. Consequently, global warming potential and abiotic depletion potential were derived as major environmental impact categories for all seven construction materials. In the case of ready-mixed concrete and cement, the photochemical oxidant creation potential was also found to be an environmental impact category that needs to be considered further. Thus, a study that defines environmental impacts must be considered in conjunction with the carbon emissions of building materials, and presenting the criteria for evaluating the defined environmental impacts is essential. In the current investigation, a native crude fucoidan (Ex) was extracted from Sargassum crispifolium, pretreated by single-screw extrusion, and two degraded fucoidans, i.e., ExAh (degradation of Ex by ascorbic acid) and ExHp (degradation of Ex by hydrogen peroxide), were obtained. The extrusion pretreatment increased the extraction yield of fucoidan by approximately 1.73-fold as compared to the non-extruded sample. Among Ex, ExAh, and ExHp, their molecular weight and chemical compositions varied, but the structural features were similar. ExHp possessed the greatest antioxidant activities among the extracted fucoidans. According to the outcome, ExAh exhibited the maximum immune promoting effects via enhanced NO, TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-10 secretion. Thus, both ExHp and ExAh may potentially be used as an effective antioxidant and as immunostimulant agents, which could be of great value in the development of food and nutraceutical products. Cellular stress response is an important adaptive mechanism for regulating cell fate decision when cells confront with stress. During tumorigenesis, tumor progression and the course of treatment, cellular stress signaling can activate subsequent response to deal with stress. Therefore, cellular stress response has impacts on the fate of tumor cells and tumor responsiveness relative to therapeutic agents. In recent years, attention has been drawn to long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), a novel class of RNA molecules with more than 200 nucleotides in length, which has little protein-coding potential and possesses various functions in multiple biological processes. Accumulating evidence has shown that lncRNAs are also engaged in the regulation of cellular stress response, particularly in cancers. Here, we summarize lncRNAs that have been reported in the adaptive response to major types of cellular stress including genotoxic, hypoxic, oxidative, metabolic and endoplasmic reticulum stress, all of which are often encountered by cancer cells. Specifically, the molecular mechanisms of how lncRNAs regulate cellular stress response during tumor progression or the development of therapy resistance are emphasized. Deep RNA sequencing of 164 blood samples collected from long-lived families was performed to investigate the expression patterns of circular RNAs (circRNAs). Unlike that observed in previous studies, circRNA expression in long-lived elderly individuals (98.3 ± 3.4 year) did not exhibit an age-accumulating pattern. Based on weighted circRNA co-expression network analysis, we found that longevous elders specifically gained eight but lost seven conserved circRNA-circRNA co-expression modules (c-CCMs) compared with normal elder controls (spouses of offspring of long-lived individuals, age = 59.3 ± 5.8 year). Further analysis showed that these modules were associated with healthy aging-related pathways. These results together suggest an important role of circRNAs in regulating human lifespan extension. Fucoidans constitute a family of fucose-rich sulfated polysaccharides, which possess multiple characteristics, including antioxidant, antitumor, antivirus, anticoagulant, and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, the incidence of colon cancer has risen rapidly worldwide. In the present study, fucoidan extracts were extracted from the Sargassumglaucescens (SG) pretreated by compressional-puffing, and four fucoidans (SG1-SG4) were obtained with different puffing conditions. It was found that SG4 possessed the highest extraction yield, relatively high cytotoxicity against human colon carcinoma HT-29 cells, and relatively low cytotoxicity to normal cells, as compared to the other extracted fucoidans. Moreover, SG4 caused cell cycle arrest of HT-29 cells at sub-G1, S, and G2/M phases. SG4 also induced HT-29 cellular apoptosis, as evidenced by the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), increased cytochrome c release, activation of caspase-9 and -3, increased DNA fragmentation, and increased early and late apoptotic cells visualized by annexin V/propidium iodide (PI) assay. Additional biological experiments revealed that the Akt/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR)/S6 pathway is involved in SG4-induced apoptosis of HT-29 cells. These results clearly indicate that SG4 showed anti-colon cancer potential via the induction of cell cycle arrest and apoptosis, and thus may have a possible application as an adjuvant therapeutic agent in colon cancer treatment. Few studies have assessed the safety issues involved in decommissioning nuclear facilities, especially from a structural and job perspective; in most developed countries, the focus is generally on the radiological risks. This study highlights the inadequacy of existing deterministic risk assessment methods, which cannot account for the uncertainty and complexity of hazards that workers are exposed to. We instead propose a fuzzy logic based safety assessment model that can analyze and compare alternatives utilizing a step-by-step risk quantification and multidimensional approach. This enables personnel to assess the various risks involved when decontaminating and decommissioning nuclear power plant structures that cannot be quantitatively assessed owing to a lack of data. Our proposed fuzzy based risk assessment model can also be applied to risk assessment in other engineering fields that depend on the judgment of experts supported by little or no statistical data. Serialized tracing provides the ability to track and trace the lifecycle of the products and parts. Unlike barcodes, Radio frequency identification (RFID), which is an important building block for internet of things (IoT), does not require a line of sight and has the advantages of recognizing many objects simultaneously and rapidly, and storing more information than barcodes. Therefore, RFID has been used in a variety of application domains such as logistics, distributions, and manufacturing, significantly improving traceability and process efficiency. In this study, we applied RFID to improve the just-in-sequence operation of an automotive inbound logistics process. First, we implemented an RFID-based visibility system for real-time traceability and control of part supply from the production lines of suppliers to the assembly line of a car manufacturer. Second, we developed an RFID-based sequence-error proofing system to avoid accidental line stops due to incorrect part sequencing. The whole system has been successfully installed in a rear-axle inbound logistics process of GM Korea. We achieved a significant amount of cost savings, especially due to the prevention of sequencing errors and part shortages, and the reduction of manual operations. Thorough cost-benefit analysis demonstrates the clear economic feasibility of using RFID technologies for the just-in-sequence inbound logistics in an automobile manufacturing environment. The rapid development of genome modification technology has provided many great benefits in diverse areas of research and industry. Genome modification technologies have also been actively used in a variety of research areas and fields of industry in avian species. Transgenic technologies such as lentiviral systems and piggyBac transposition have been used to produce transgenic birds for diverse purposes. In recent years, newly developed programmable genome editing tools such as transcription activator-like effector nuclease (TALEN) and clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein 9 (CRISPR/Cas9) have also been successfully adopted in avian systems with primordial germ cell (PGC)-mediated genome modification. These genome modification technologies are expected to be applied to practical uses beyond system development itself. The technologies could be used to enhance economic traits in poultry such as acquiring a disease resistance or producing functional proteins in eggs. Furthermore, novel avian models of human diseases or embryonic development could also be established for research purposes. Airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is widely used in digital elevation model (DEM) generation. However, the very large volume of LiDAR datasets brings a great challenge for the traditional serial algorithm. Using parallel computing to accelerate the efficiency of DEM generation from LiDAR points has been a hot topic in parallel geo-computing. Generally, most of the existing parallel algorithms running on high-performance clusters (HPC) were in process-paralleling mode, with a static scheduling strategy. The static strategy would not respond dynamically according to the computation progress, leading to load unbalancing. Additionally, because each process has independent memory space, the cost of dealing with boundary problems increases obviously with the increase in the number of processes. Actually, these two problems can have a significant influence on the efficiency of DEM generation for larger datasets, especially for those of irregular shapes. Thus, to solve these problems, we combined the advantages of process-paralleling with the advantages of thread-paralleling, forming a new idea: using process-paralleling to achieve a flexible schedule and scalable computation, using thread-paralleling inside the process to reduce boundary problems. Therefore, we proposed a hybrid process/thread parallel algorithm for generating DEM from LiDAR points. Firstly, at the process level, we designed a parallel method (PPDB) to accelerate the partitioning of LiDAR points. We also proposed a new dynamic scheduling strategy to achieve better load balancing. Secondly, at the thread level, we designed an asynchronous parallel strategy to hide the cost of LiDAR points' reading. Lastly, we tested our algorithm with three LiDAR datasets. Experiments showed that our parallel algorithm had no influence on the accuracy of the resultant DEM. At the same time, our algorithm reduced the conversion time from 112,486 s to 2342 s when we used the largest dataset (150 GB). The PPDB was parallelizable and the new dynamic scheduling strategy achieved a better load balancing. Furthermore, the asynchronous parallel strategy reduced the impact of LiDAR points reading. The Planetary Boundary Layer Height (PBLH) plays an important role in the formation and development of air pollution events. Particulate Matter is one of major pollutants in China. Here, we present the characteristics of PBLH through three-methods of Lidar data inversion and show the correlation between the PBLH and the PM2.5 (PM2.5 with the diameter <2.5 μm) in the period of December 2015 through November 2016, over Nanjing, in southeast China. We applied gradient method (GRA), standard deviation method (STD) and wavelet covariance transform method (WCT) to calculate the PBLH. The results show that WCT is the most stable method which is less sensitive to the signal noise. We find that the PBLH shows typical seasonal variation trend with maximum in summer and minimum in winter, respectively. The yearly averaged PBLH in the diurnal cycle show the minimum of 570 m at 08:00 and the maximum of 1089 m at 15:00 Beijing time. Furthermore, we investigate the relationship of the PBLH and PM2.5 concentration under different particulate pollution conditions. The correlation coefficient is about -0.70, which is negative correlation. The average PBLH are 718 m and 1210 m when the PM2.5 > 75 μg/m3 and the PM2.5 < 35 μg/m3 in daytime, respectively. The low PBLH often occurs with condition of the low wind speed and high relative humidity, which will lead to high PM2.5 concentration and the low visibility. Given the fact that Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) and the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) are currently onboard the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) satellite and will continue to be carried on the same platform as future Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) satellites for the next decade, it is desirable to develop a fast and accurate collocation scheme to collocate VIIRS products and measurements with CrIS for applications that rely on combining measurements from two sensors such as inter-calibration, geolocation assessment, and cloud detection. In this study, an accurate and fast collocation method to collocate VIIRS measurements within CrIS instantaneous field of view (IFOV) directly based on line-of-sight (LOS) pointing vectors is developed and discussed in detail. We demonstrate that this method is not only accurate and precise from a mathematical perspective, but also easy to implement computationally. More importantly, with optimization, this method is very fast and efficient and thus can meet operational requirements. Oxidative stress is one of the major factors in the pathogenesis of liver disease. Quercetin is a plant-based antioxidant traditionally used as a treatment for hepatic injury, but its poor solubility affects its bioavailability. We here report the regulative effects on hepatoprotection and absorption in mice of quercetin sulfation to form quercetin-5',8-disulfonate (QS), a novel synthetic compound. Oral administration of both QS and the parent quercetin at 100, 200 and 500 mg/kg•bw prior to acute CCl4 oxidative damage in mice, effectively attenuated serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities and hepatic malondialdehyde (MDA) levels (p < 0.05), and suppressed the CCl4-induced depletion of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD). Selective 5',8-sulfation of quercetin increased the hepatoprotective effect, and its relative absorption relative to quercetin (p < 0.05) as indicated by an improved 24-hour urinary excretion and a decreased fecal excretion determined by HPLC. These results and histopathological observations collectively demonstrate that quercetin sulfation increases its hepatoprotective effects and absorption in mice, and QS has potential as a chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic agent for liver diseases. We aimed to reveal the true status of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations in Chinese patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after lung resections. EGFR mutations of surgically resected fresh tumor samples from 697 Chinese NSCLC patients were analyzed by Amplification Refractory Mutation System (ARMS). Correlations between EGFR mutation hotspots and clinical features were also explored. Of the 697 NSCLC patients, 235 (33.7%) patients had tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKIs) sensitive EGFR mutations in 41 (14.5%) of the 282 squamous carcinomas, 155 (52.9%) of the 293 adenocarcinomas, 34 (39.5%) of the 86 adenosquamous carcinomas, one (9.1%) of the 11 large-cell carcinomas, 2 (11.1%) of the 18 sarcomatoid carcinomas, and 2 (28.6%) of the 7 mucoepidermoid carcinomas. TKIs sensitive EGFR mutations were more frequently found in female patients (p < 0.001), non-smokers (p = 0.047) and adenocarcinomas (p < 0.001). The rates of exon 19 deletion mutation (19-del), exon 21 L858R point mutation (L858R), exon 21 L861Q point mutation (L861Q), exon 18 G719X point mutations (G719X, including G719C, G719S, G719A) were 43.4%, 48.1%, 1.7% and 6.8%, respectively. Exon 20 T790M point mutation (T790M) was detected in 3 squamous carcinomas and 3 adenocarcinomas and exon 20 insertion mutation (20-ins) was detected in 2 patients with adenocarcinoma. Our results show the rates of EGFR mutations are higher in all types of NSCLC in Chinese patients. 19-del and L858R are two of the more frequent mutations. Zeolites are potentially a robust desalination alternative, as they are chemically stable and possess the essential properties needed to reject ions. Zeolite membranes could desalinate "challenging" waters, such as saline secondary effluent, without any substantial pre-treatment, due to the robust mechanical properties of ceramic membranes. A novel MFI-type zeolite membrane was developed on a tubular α-Al2O3 substrate by a combined rubbing and secondary hydrothermal growth method. The prepared membrane was characterised by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and single gas (He or N2) permeation and underwent desalination tests with NaCl solutions under different pressures (0.7 MPa and 7 MPa). The results showed that higher pressure resulted in higher Na+ rejection and permeate flux. The zeolite membrane achieved a good rejection of Na+ (~82%) for a NaCl feed solution with a TDS (total dissolved solids) of 3000 mg•L-1 at an applied pressure of 7 MPa and 21 °C. To explore the opportunity for high salinity and high temperature desalination, this membrane was also tested with high concentration NaCl solutions (up to TDS 90,000 mg•L-1) and at 90 °C. This is the first known work at such high salinities of NaCl. It was found that increasing the salinity of the feed solution decreased both Na+ rejection and flux. Confinement of electrons can occur in metal islands or in continuous films grown heteroepitaxially upon a substrate of a different metal or on a metallic alloy. Associated quantum size effects (QSE) can produce a significant height-dependence of the surface free energy for nanoscale thicknesses of up to 10-20 layers. This may suffice to induce height selection during film growth. Scanning STM analysis has revealed remarkable flat-topped or mesa-like island and film morphologies in various systems. We discuss in detail observations of QSE and associated film growth behavior for Pb/Cu(111), Ag/Fe(100), and Cu/fcc-Fe/Cu(100) [A/B or A/B/A], and for Ag/NiAl(110) with brief comments offered for Fe/Cu3Au(001) [A/BC binary alloys]. We also describe these issues for Ag/5-fold i-Al-Pd-Mn and Bi/5-fold i-Al-Cu-Fe [A/BCD ternary icosohedral quasicrystals]. Electronic structure theory analysis, either at the level of simple free electron gas models or more sophisticated Density Functional Theory calculations, can provide insight into the QSE-mediated thermodynamic driving force underlying height selection. The paper proposes three alternative extensions to the classical global-best particle swarm optimization dynamics, and compares their relative performance with the standard particle swarm algorithm. The first extension, which readily follows from the well-known Lyapunov's stability theorem, provides a mathematical basis of the particle dynamics with a guaranteed convergence at an optimum. The inclusion of local and global attractors to this dynamics leads to faster convergence speed and better accuracy than the classical one. The second extension augments the velocity adaptation equation by a negative randomly weighted positional term of individual particle, while the third extension considers the negative positional term in place of the inertial term. This paper applies the Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm to the task of automatic fuzzy clustering in a Multi-objective Optimization (MO) framework. It compares the performances of two multi-objective variants of DE over the fuzzy clustering problem, where two conflicting fuzzy validity indices are simultaneously optimized. The resultant Pareto optimal set of solutions from each algorithm consists of a number of nondominated solutions, from which the user can choose the most promising ones according to the problem specifications. A real-coded representation of the search variables, accommodating variable number of cluster centers, is used for DE. The performances of the multi-objective DE-variants have also been contrasted to that of two most well-known schemes of MO clustering, namely the Non Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA II) and Multi-Objective Clustering with an unknown number of Clusters K (MOCK). Experimental results using six artificial and four real life datasets of varying range of complexities indicate that DE holds immense promise as a candidate algorithm for devising MO clustering schemes. (1) Background: Chest radiographs are the mainstay of initial radiological investigation in this COVID-19 pandemic. A reliable and readily deployable artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm that detects pneumonia in COVID-19 suspects can be useful for screening or triage in a hospital setting. This study has a few objectives: first, to develop a model that accurately detects pneumonia in COVID-19 suspects; second, to assess its performance in a real-world clinical setting; and third, by integrating the model with the daily clinical workflow, to measure its impact on report turn-around time. (2) Methods: The model was developed from the NIH Chest-14 open-source dataset and fine-tuned using an internal dataset comprising more than 4000 CXRs acquired in our institution. Input from two senior radiologists provided the reference standard. The model was integrated into daily clinical workflow, prioritising abnormal CXRs for expedited reporting. Area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), F1 score, sensitivity, and specificity were calculated to characterise diagnostic performance. The average time taken by radiologists in reporting the CXRs was compared against the mean baseline time taken prior to implementation of the AI model. (3) Results: 9431 unique CXRs were included in the datasets, of which 1232 were ground truth-labelled positive for pneumonia. On the "live" dataset, the model achieved an AUC of 0.95 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.92, 0.96) corresponding to a specificity of 97% (95% CI: 0.97, 0.98) and sensitivity of 79% (95% CI: 0.72, 0.84). No statistically significant degradation of diagnostic performance was encountered during clinical deployment, and report turn-around time was reduced by 22%. (4) Conclusion: In real-world clinical deployment, our model expedites reporting of pneumonia in COVID-19 suspects while preserving diagnostic performance without significant model drift. Design–build (DB) projects have become increasingly popular for construction projects in developing countries due to the cost and scheduling advantages and their design optimization ability. As a result, much research has been conducted on improving DB efficiency in terms of cost, scheduling, risk management, etc. However, the existing studies have mainly focused on the owner's roles, whereas general contractors (GCs) must also take many risks on behalf of owners in DB projects. The adequate identification and assessment of risks before engaging a contractor can increase the likelihood of a project's success, at least from a DB contractor's perspective. Therefore, this study interviewed procurement experts to conduct a survey at the local level, then analyzed, developed, and proposed an additional risk management process (RMP) for use by GCs during the bidding process of DB projects. A case study was conducted with a large Vietnamese GC to evaluate the effectiveness of the process and find ways to optimize it in the future. The results of the study showed that risk management during a DB project is imperative. Nevertheless, preparing bids is time-consuming and increases the contingency costs, reducing the competitiveness of the bid prices for contractors. Therefore, depending on the specific project and risk management objectives, an RMP is recommended for adjusting the risk management target to reduce the risk, while still maintaining the competitiveness of the bid prices. Leiomyoma is the most common benign uterine tumor in reproductive-age women. Increasing numbers of studies are focusing on the effects of environmental exposure on the incidence and progression of tumors. One major step taken in the food industry is the addition of food preservatives to maintain freshness. Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) is a synthetic phenolic antioxidant, which is widely used as an additive to develop fat-soluble characteristics, as well as in cosmetics and rubber. Previous studies also highlighted that BHT may be related to increased fibrosis capacity and carcinogenic effects. In this study, we explored the effects of the commonly used food additive BHT on leiomyoma progression, and the related mechanism. The exposure of the ELT-3 leiomyoma cell line to BHT for 48 h increased the proliferative effect. Since leiomyoma progression is related to increases in extracellular matrix (ECM) accumulation and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP), BHT could effectively increase ECM-related protein expression, as well as MMP-2 and MMP-9 protein expression. This increase in ECM, in response to BHT, may be linked to the activation of the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway. Through PI3K inhibition, BHT's effect on leiomyoma progression could be partially modulated. These results suggest the harmful effect of BHT exposure on leiomyoma progression may relate to PI3K modulation. However, an in vivo study is necessary to confirm these findings. In this paper, the influence of coarse aggregate on the slump flow and the following mechanical strengths (flexural and compressive strengths), the shrinkage rate, the chloride penetration resistance, and the freeze–thaw resistance were investigated. Water–binder ratios in this study were 0.22, 0.30, 0.34, and 0.45. Sand ratio in this study was 0.45. All samples were cured for 7 d, 14 d, 28 d, and 56 d, respectively. Results indicated that the fluidity of cement concrete with different coarse aggregate increased in this order: gneiss < limestone < basalt < diabase. The mechanical strengths and shrinkage rate increased obviously with the increasing curing age when the curing age ranged from 7 days to 28 days. However, the mechanical strengths and shrinkage rate trended to a stable value when the increasing curing age increased from 28 days to 56 days. The mechanical strengths with different coarse aggregate increased in this order: diabase < basalt < limestone < gneiss. Meanwhile, the shrinkage rate demonstrated this trend of development: diabase < basalt < limestone < gneiss. The resistance to freeze–thaw cycles of cement concrete decreased with the increasing water–binder ratio. The purpose of this paper is to find the time-optimal control to a target set for semilinear stochastic functional differential equations involving time delays or memories under general conditions on a target set and nonlinear terms even though the equations contain unbounded principal operators. Our research approach is to construct a fundamental solution for corresponding linear systems and establish variations of a constant formula of solutions for given stochastic equations. Every year, ceramic tile factories and the iron smelting industry produce huge amounts of waste ceramic tiles and blast furnace slag (BFS), respectively. In the field of construction materials, this waste can be used as a raw material for binders, thus reducing landfill waste and mitigating environmental pollution. The purpose of this study was to mix waste ceramic powder (WCP) into BFS paste and mortar activated by sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide to study its effect on performance. BFS was partially replaced by WCP at the rate of 10–30% by weight. Some experimental studies were conducted on, for example, the fluidity, heat of hydration, compressive strength testing, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), electrical resistivity, sulfuric acid attack, and chloride ion diffusion coefficient. Based on the results of these experiments, the conclusions are: (1) increasing the amount of waste ceramic powder in the mixture can improve the fluidity of the alkali-activated paste; (2) adding waste ceramic powder to the alkali-activated mortar can improve the resistance of the mortar to sulfuric acid; (3) adding waste ceramic powder to the alkali-activated mortar can increase the diffusion coefficient of chloride ions; (4) the early strength of alkali-activated mortar is affected by the Ca/Si ratio, while the later strength is affected by the change in the Si/Al ratio. Hinokitiol is a natural tropolone derivative that is present in the heartwood of cupressaceous plants, and has been extensively investigated for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antitumor properties in the context of various diseases. To date, the effects of hinokitiol on endometrial cancer (EC) has not been explored. The purpose of our study was to investigate the anti-proliferative effects of hinokitiol on EC cells. Cell viability was determined with an MTT (3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay, and the quantification of apoptosis and reactive oxygen species (ROSs) was performed by using flow cytometry, while protein expression was measured with the Western blotting technique. Hinokitiol significantly suppressed cell proliferation through the inhibition of the expression of cell-cycle mediators, such as cyclin D1 and cyclin-dependent kinase 4 (CDK4), as well as the induction of the tumor suppressor protein p53. In addition, hinokitiol increased the number of apoptotic cells and increased the protein expression of cleaved-poly-ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) and active cleaved-caspase-3, as well as the ratio of Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax) to B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2). Interestingly, except for KLE cells, hinokitiol induced autophagy by promoting the accumulation of the microtubule-associated protein light chain 3B (LC3B) and reducing the sequestosome-1 (p62/SQSTM1) protein level. Furthermore, hinokitiol triggered ROS production and upregulated the phosphorylation of extracellular-signal-regulated kinase (p-ERK1/2) in EC cells. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a complex multifactorial disease characterized by insulin resistance and dysfunction of pancreatic β-cells. Rice husk silica liquid (RHSL) is derived from rice husks and has not been explored in diabetes mellitus until now. Previous studies showed that rice husk is enriched with silica, and its silica nanoparticles are higher more biocompatible. To investigate the potential protective role of RHSL on pancreatic β cells, we utilized RIN-m5F pancreatic β cells and explored RHSL effect after streptozotocin (STZ)-stimulation. The recovery effects of RHSL were evaluated using flow cytometry, Western blotting, and immunofluorescence analysis. Results of our study showed that RHSL reversed the cell viability, insulin secretion, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and the change of mitochondria membrane potential (ΔΨm) in STZ-treated RIN-m5F cells. Moreover, the expression of phospho-receptor-interacting protein 3 (p-RIP3) and cleaved-poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), phospho-mammalian target of rapamycin (p-mTOR), and sequestosome-1 (p62/SQSTM1) were significantly decreased, while the transition of light chain (LC)3-I to LC3-II was markedly increased after RHSL treatment in STZ-induced RIN-m5F cells. Interestingly, using autophagy inhibitors such as 3-methyladenine (3-MA) and chloroquine (CQ) both showed an increase in cleaved-PARP protein level, indicating apoptosis induction. Cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis and aortic valve sclerosis involve inflammatory reactions triggered by various stimuli, causing increased oxidative stress. This increased oxidative stress causes damage to the heart cells, with subsequent cell apoptosis or calcification. Currently, heart valve damage or heart valve diseases are treated by drugs or surgery. Natural antioxidant products are being investigated in related research, such as fucoxanthin (Fx), which is a marine carotenoid extracted from seaweed, with strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor properties. This study aimed to explore the protective effect of Fx on heart valves under high oxidative stress, as well as the underlying mechanism of action. Rat heart valve interstitial cells under H2O2-induced oxidative stress were treated with Fx. Fx improved cell survival and reduced oxidative stress-induced DNA damage, which was assessed by cell viability analysis and staining with propidium iodide. Alizarin Red-S analysis indicated that Fx has a protective effect against calcification. Furthermore, Western blotting revealed that Fx abrogates oxidative stress-induced apoptosis via reducing the expression of apoptosis-related proteins as well as modulate Akt/ERK-related protein expression. Notably, in vivo experiments using 26 dogs treated with 60 mg/kg of Fx in combination with medical treatment for 0.5 to 2 years showed significant recovery in their echocardiographic parameters.
