Rubisco small subunit (RbcS), a core component with crucial effects on the structure and kinetic properties of the Rubisco enzyme, plays an important role in response to plant growth, development, and various stresses. Although Rbcs genes have been characterized in many plants, their muti-functions in soybeans remain elusive. In this study, a total of 11 GmRbcS genes were identified and subsequently divided into three subgroups based on a phylogenetic relationship. The evolutionary analysis revealed that whole-genome duplication has a profound effect on GmRbcSs . The cis-acting elements responsive to plant hormones, development, and stress-related were widely found in the promoter region. Expression patterns based on the RT-qPCR assay exhibited that GmRbcS genes are expressed in multiple tissues, and notably Glyma.19G046600 ( GmRbcS8 ) exhibited the highest expression level compared to other members, especially in leaves. Moreover, differential expressions of GmRbcS genes were found to be significantly regulated by exogenous plant hormones, demonstrating their potential functions in diverse biology processes. Finally, the function of GmRbcS8 in enhancing soybean resistance to soybean mosaic virus (SMV) was further determined through the virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) assay. All these findings establish a strong basis for further elucidating the biological functions of RbcS genes in soybeans.

Fragrance is a valuable trait in rice varieties, with its aroma significantly influencing consumer preference. In this study, we conducted comprehensive metabolome and transcriptome analyses to elucidate the genetic and biochemical basis of fragrance in the Shangsixiangnuo (SSXN) variety, a fragrant indica rice cultivated in Guangxi, China. Through sensory evaluation and genetic analysis, we confirmed SSXN as strongly fragrant, with an 806 bp deletion in the BADH2 gene associated with fragrance production. In the metabolome analysis, a total of 238, 233, 105 and 60 metabolic compounds exhibited significant changes at the seedling (S), reproductive (R), filling (F), and maturation (M) stages, respectively. We identified four compounds that exhibited significant changes in SSXN across all four development stages. Our analyses revealed a significant upregulation of 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline (2AP), the well-studied aromatic compound, in SSXN compared to the non-fragrant variety. Additionally, correlation analysis identified several metabolites strongly associated with 2AP, including ethanone, 1-(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)-, 1H-pyrrole, and pyrrole. Furthermore, Weighted Gene Co-expression Network Analysis (WGCNA) analysis highlighted the magenta and yellow modules as particularly enriched in aroma-related metabolites, providing insights into the complex aromatic compounds underlying the fragrance of rice. In the transcriptome analysis, a total of 5582, 5506, 4965, and 4599 differential expressed genes (DEGs) were identified across the four developmental stages, with a notable enrichment of the common pathway amino sugar and nucleotide sugar metabolism in all stages. In our correlation analysis between metabolome and transcriptome data, the top three connected metabolites, phenol-, 3-amino-, and 2AP, along with ethanone, 1-(1H-pyrrol-2-yl)-, exhibited strong associations with transcripts, highlighting their potential roles in fragrance biosynthesis. Additionally, the downregulated expression of the P4H4 gene, encoding a procollagen-proline dioxygenase that specifically targets proline, in SSXN suggests its involvement in proline metabolism and potentially in aroma formation pathways. Overall, our study provides comprehensive insights into the genetic and biochemical mechanisms underlying fragrance production in rice, laying the foundation for further research aimed at enhancing fragrance quality in rice breeding programs.

Polylactic acid (PLA) composite serve as widely used filaments in fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing. This study investigates the enhancement of PLA composite's comprehensive mechanical properties and thermal stability through the incorporation of carbon fiber (CF). The influence of FDM process parameters on the mechanical properties of PLA composite is also analyzed. Results show that adding 5 wt.% CF significantly enhances the stiffness and comprehensive mechanical properties of PLA composite. The order of printing factors affecting the tensile strength of the PLA composite product is as follows: printing layer thickness, bottom plate temperature, printing speed, and nozzle temperature. Finally, optimal tensile strength is achieved under specific conditions: 0.1 mm layer thickness, 60 °C bottom plate temperature, 40 mm/s printing speed, and 215 °C nozzle temperature.

As an important class of nitrogen-containing fused heterocyclic compounds, imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines often exhibit significant biological activities, such as analgesic, anticancer, antiosteoporosis, anxiolytic, etc. Using Y(OTf) 3 as a Lewis acid catalyst, a simple and efficient method has been developed for the synthesis of C 3 -alkylated imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines through the three-component aza-Friedel-Crafts reaction of imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines, aldehydes, and amines in the normal air atmosphere without the protection of inert gas and special requirements for anhydrous and anaerobic conditions. A series of imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine derivatives were obtained with moderate to good yields, and their structures were confirmed by 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, and HRMS. Furthermore, this conversion has the advantages of simple operation, excellent functional group tolerance, high atomic economy, broad substrate scope, and can achieve gram-level reactions. Notably, this methodology may be conveniently applied to the further design and rapid synthesis of potential biologically active imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines with multifunctional groups.

Currently, microscopic research on the tensile fracture properties of recycled brick coarse aggregate concrete has mainly adopted microscopy techniques, which can clearly observe the actual damage situations of each phase material but are unable to individually analyze the effect of a specific material factor on the tensile properties of recycled concrete. This brings much uncertainty to the practical application of recycled concrete. Therefore, this study proposes a cohesive zone model (CZM) for simulating the tensile fracture of recycled brick coarse aggregate (RBCA) concrete. To this end, the study explores the effects of various critical factors on the fracture mode and bearing capacity of recycled brick aggregate concrete, including the replacement rate of recycled brick coarse aggregate, pore structure, interfacial transition zone (ITZ) strength, mortar strength, and volume fraction of brick aggregate. The results indicate that, when the minor to major axis ratio of elliptical pores is 0.5 ≤ K < 1, the following order of influence can be observed: random convex polygonal pores, circular pores, and elliptical pores. Moreover, excessively strengthening the ITZ and mortar does not significantly enhance the tensile performance of RBCA concrete. The distribution location of aggregate has a significant impact on the crack shape of recycled concrete, as does the pore structure, due to their randomness. Therefore, this article also discusses these. These findings contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the tensile properties of recycled brick coarse aggregate and provide insights into optimizing its behavior.

This study sought to explore potential roles of endothelial ferroptosis in radiation-associated atherosclerosis (RAA) and molecular mechanisms behind this phenomenon. Here, an in vivo RAA mouse model was used and treated with ferroptosis inhibitors. We found that the RAA group had a higher plaque burden and a reduction in endothelial cells with increased lipid peroxidation compared to the control group, while ameliorated by liproxstatin-1. In vitro experiments further confirmed that radiation induced the occurrence of ferroptosis in human artery endothelial cells (HAECs). Then, proteomics analysis of HAECs identified domain-containing protein 2 (DDHD2) as a co-differentially expressed protein, which was enriched in the lipid metabolism pathway. In addition, the level of lipid peroxidation was elevated in DDHD2-knockdown HAECs. Mechanistically, a significant decrease in the protein and mRNA expression of glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) was observed in HAECs following DDHD2 knockdown. Co-immunoprecipitation assays indicated a potential interaction between DDHD2 and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2). The downregulation of Nrf2 protein was also detected in DDHD2-knockdown HAECs. In conclusion, our findings suggest that radiation-induced endothelial ferroptosis accelerates atherosclerosis, and DDHD2 is a potential regulatory protein in radiation-induced endothelial ferroptosis through the Nrf2/GPX4 pathway.

The quality of underwater bridge piers significantly impacts bridge safety and long-term usability. To address limitations in conventional inspection methods, this paper presents a sonar-based technique for the three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction and visualization of underwater bridge piers. Advanced MS1000 scanning sonar is employed to detect and image bridge piers. Automated image preprocessing, including filtering, denoising, binarization, filling, and morphological operations, introduces an enhanced wavelet denoising method to accurately extract the foundation contour coordinates of bridge piers from sonar images. Using these coordinates, along with undamaged pier dimensions and sonar distances, a model-driven approach for a 3D pier reconstruction algorithm is developed. This algorithm leverages multiple sonar data points to reconstruct damaged piers through multiplication. The Visualization Toolkit (VTK) and surface contour methodology are utilized for 3D visualization, enabling interactive manipulation for enhanced observation and analysis. Experimental results indicate a relative error of 13.56% for the hole volume and 10.65% for the spalling volume, demonstrating accurate replication of bridge pier defect volumes by the reconstructed models. Experimental validation confirms the method's accuracy and effectiveness in reconstructing underwater bridge piers in three dimensions, providing robust support for safety assessments and contributing significantly to bridge stability and long-term safety assurance.

Nutritional therapy, for example through beer, is the best solution to human chronic diseases. In this article, we demonstrate the physiological mechanisms of the functional ingredients in beer with health-promoting effects, based on the PubMed, Google, CNKI, and ISI Web of Science databases, published from 1997 to 2024. Beer, a complex of barley malt and hops, is rich in functional ingredients. The health effects of beer against 26 chronic diseases are highly similar to those of barley due to the physiological mechanisms of polyphenols (phenolic acids, flavonoids), melatonin, minerals, bitter acids, vitamins, and peptides. Functional beer with low purine and high active ingredients made from pure barley malt, as well as an additional functional food, represents an important development direction, specifically, ginger beer, ginseng beer, and coix-lily beer, as consumed by our ancestors ca. 9000 years ago. Low-purine beer can be produced via enzymatic and biological degradation and adsorption of purines, as well as dandelion addition. Therefore, this review paper not only reveals the physiological mechanisms of beer in overcoming chronic human diseases, but also provides a scientific basis for the development of functional beer with health-promoting effects.

To address the increased energy demand, tumor cells undergo metabolic reprogramming, including oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) and aerobic glycolysis. This study investigates the role of Kruppel-like factor 4 (KLF4), a transcription factor, as a tumor suppressor in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) by regulating ATP synthesis. Immunohistochemistry was performed to assess KLF4 expression in HCC tissues. Functional assays, such as CCK-8, EdU, and colony formation, as well as in vivo assays, including subcutaneous tumor formation and liver orthotopic xenograft mouse models, were conducted to determine the impact of KLF4 on HCC proliferation. Luciferase reporter assay and chromatin immunoprecipitation assay were utilized to evaluate the interaction between KLF4, miR-206, and RICTOR. The findings reveal low KLF4 expression in HCC, which is associated with poor prognosis. Both in vitro and in vivo functional assays demonstrate that KLF4 inhibits HCC cell proliferation. Mechanistically, it was demonstrated that KLF4 reduces ATP synthesis in HCC by suppressing the expression of RICTOR, a core component of mTORC2. This suppression promotes glutaminolysis to replenish the TCA cycle and increase ATP levels, facilitated by the promotion of miR-206 transcription. In conclusion, this study enhances the understanding of KLF4's role in HCC ATP synthesis and suggests that targeting the KLF4/miR-206/RICTOR axis could be a promising therapeutic approach for anti-HCC therapeutics.

Replacing the flammable liquid electrolytes with solid ones has been considered to be the most effective way to improve the safety of the lithium batteries. However, the solid electrolytes often suffer from low ionic conductivity and poor rate capability due to their relatively stable molecular/atomic architectures. In this study, we report a composite solid electrolyte, in which polyethylene oxide (PEO) is the matrix and Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.45 Ta 0.5 Mo 0.05 O 12 (LLZTMO) and Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZTO) are the fillers. Ta/Mo co-doping can further promote the ion transport capacity in the electrolyte. The synthesized composite electrolytes exhibit high thermal stability (up to 413 °C) and good ionic conductivity (LLZTMO-PEO 2.00 × 10 -4 S·cm -1 , LLZTO-PEO 1.53 × 10 -4 S·cm -1 ) at 35 °C. Compared with a pure PEO electrolyte, whose ionic conductivity is in the range of 10 -7 ~10 -6 S·cm -1 , the ionic conductivity of composite solid electrolytes is greatly improved. The full cell assembled with LiFePO 4 as the positive electrode exhibits excellent rate performance and good cycling stability, indicating that prepared solid electrolytes have great potential applications in lithium batteries.

Somatostatin (SS) plays crucial regulatory roles in animal growth and reproduction by affecting the synthesis and secretion of growth hormone (GH). However, the mechanism by which SS regulates growth and development in goats is still unclear. In order to investigate the regulatory networks of the hypothalamus and pituitary in goats affected by SS DNA vaccines, in this study, we used a previously established oral attenuated Salmonella typhimurium SS DNA vaccine, X9241 (ptCS/2SS-asd), to treat wethers. We analyzed the protein changes in hypothalamic and pituitary tissues using a TMT-based proteomics approach. Additionally, we examined the metabolic profiles of the serum of control and immunized wethers through untargeted metabolomics using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Key signaling pathways were identified based on differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) and differentially expressed proteins (DEPs). Furthermore, the effect of critical DEPs on signaling pathways was confirmed through Western blotting (WB) experiments, which elucidated the mechanism of active SS immunization in wethers. A proteomics analysis revealed that the expression of 58 proteins in the hypothalamus and 124 in the pituitary gland was significantly altered following SS vaccine treatment (fold change > 1.2 or < 0.83, p < 0.05). In the hypothalamus, many DEPs were associated with gene ontology (GO) terms related to neuronal signaling. In contrast, most DEPs were associated with metabolic pathways. In the pituitary gland, the DEPs were largely related to immune and nutrient metabolism functions, with significant enrichment in KEGG pathways, particularly those involving the metabolic pathway, sphingolipid signaling, and the cGMP-PKG signaling pathway. A metabolomic analysis further showed that active SS immunization in wethers led to significant alterations in seven serum metabolites. Notably, the sphingolipid signaling pathway, secondary bile acid synthesis, sphingolipid metabolism, and lysine synthesis were significantly disrupted. SS vaccines induced marked changes in hypothalamic-pituitary proteins in wethers, facilitating alterations in their growth processes. This study not only provides insights into the mechanism of the SS gene in regulating GH secretion in wethers but also establishes a basis for hormone immunoregulation technology to enhance livestock production performance.

The proliferation of large green macroalgae in marine environments has led to the occurrence of green tides, particularly in the South Yellow Sea region of China, where Ulva prolifera has been identified as the primary species responsible for the world's largest green tide events. Allelopathy among plants is a critical factor influencing the dynamics of green tides. This review synthesizes previous research on allelopathic interactions within green tides, categorizing four extensively studied allelochemicals: fatty acids, aldehydes, phenols, and terpenes. The mechanisms by which these compounds regulate the physiological processes of green tide algae are examined in depth. Additionally, recent advancements in the rapid detection of allelochemicals are summarized, and their potential applications in monitoring green tide events are discussed. The integration of advanced monitoring technologies, such as satellite observation and environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis, with allelopathic substance detection is also explored. This combined approach addresses gaps in understanding the dynamic processes of green tide formation and provides a more comprehensive insight into the mechanisms driving these phenomena. The findings and new perspectives presented in this review aim to offer valuable insights and inspiration for researchers and policymakers.

In this study, we report the successful development of a novel high-sensitivity intensity-based Surface Plasmon Resonance imaging (SPRi) biosensor and its application for detecting molecular interactions. By optimizing the excitation wavelength and employing a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) algorithm, the system can determine the optimal excitation wavelength based on the initial refractive index of the sample without adjusting the incidence angle. The experimental results demonstrate that the refractive index resolution of the system reaches 1.77×10-6 RIU. Moreover, it can obtain the optimal excitation wavelength for samples with an initial refractive index in the range of 1.333 to 1.370 RIU and accurately monitor variations within the range of 0.0037 RIU without adjusting the incidence angle. Additionally, our new SPRi technique realized real-time detection of high-throughput biomolecular binding processes, enabling analysis of kinetic parameters. This research is expected to advance the development of more accurate SPRi technologies for molecular interaction analysis.

An appropriate flowering period is an important selection criterion in maize breeding. It plays a crucial role in the ecological adaptability of maize varieties. To explore the genetic basis of flowering time, GWAS and GS analyses were conducted using an associating panel consisting of 379 multi-parent DH lines. The DH population was phenotyped for days to tasseling (DTT), days to pollen-shedding (DTP), and days to silking (DTS) in different environments. The heritability was 82.75%, 86.09%, and 85.26% for DTT, DTP, and DTS, respectively. The GWAS analysis with the FarmCPU model identified 10 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) distributed on chromosomes 3, 8, 9, and 10 that were significantly associated with flowering time-related traits. The GWAS analysis with the BLINK model identified seven SNPs distributed on chromosomes 1, 3, 8, 9, and 10 that were significantly associated with flowering time-related traits. Three SNPs 3&#95;198946071, 9&#95;146646966, and 9&#95;152140631 showed a pleiotropic effect, indicating a significant genetic correlation between DTT, DTP, and DTS. A total of 24 candidate genes were detected. A relatively high prediction accuracy was achieved with 100 significantly associated SNPs detected from GWAS, and the optimal training population size was 70%. This study provides a better understanding of the genetic architecture of flowering time-related traits and provides an optimal strategy for GS.

Skeletal muscle grows in response to a combination of genetic and environmental factors, and its growth and development influence the quality of pork. Elucidating the molecular mechanisms regulating the growth and development of skeletal muscle is of great significance to both animal husbandry and farm management. The Jiangquan black pig is an excellent pig breed based on the original Yimeng black pig , importing the genes of the Duroc pig for meat traits, and cultivated through years of scientific selection and breeding. In this study, full-length transcriptome sequencing was performed on three growth stages of Jiangquan black pigs , aiming to study the developmental changes in Jiangquan black pigs at different developmental stages at the molecular level and to screen the key genes affecting the growth of skeletal muscle in Jiangquan black pigs . We performed an enrichment analysis of genes showing differential expression and constructed a protein-protein interaction network with the aim of identifying core genes involved in the development of Jiangquan black pigs . Notably, genes such as TNNI2 , TMOD4 , PLDIM3 , MYOZ1, and MYH1 may be potential regulators of muscle development in Jiangquan black pigs . Our results contribute to the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of skeletal muscle development in this pig breed, which will facilitate molecular breeding efforts and the development of pig breeds to meet the needs of the livestock industry.

Mitochondria, essential organelles orchestrating cellular metabolism, have emerged as central players in various disease pathologies. Recent research has shed light on mitohormesis, a concept proposing an adaptive response of mitochondria to minor disturbances in homeostasis, offering novel therapeutic avenues for mitochondria-related diseases. This comprehensive review explores the concept of mitohormesis, elucidating its induction mechanisms and occurrence. Intracellular molecules like reactive oxygen species (ROS), calcium, mitochondrial unfolded proteins (UPRmt), and integrated stress response (ISR), along with external factors such as hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S), physical stimuli, and exercise, play pivotal roles in regulating mitohormesis. Based on the available evidence, we elucidate how mitohormesis maintains mitochondrial homeostasis through mechanisms like mitochondrial quality control and mitophagy. Furthermore, the regulatory role of mitohormesis in mitochondria-related diseases is discussed. By envisioning future applications, this review underscores the significance of mitohormesis as a potential therapeutic target, paving the way for innovative interventions in disease management.

Urea stands as a ubiquitous environmental contaminant. However, not only does urea oxidation reaction technology facilitate energy conversion, but it also significantly contributes to treating wastewater rich in urea. Furthermore, urea electrolysis has a significantly lower theoretical potential (0.37 V) compared to water electrolysis (1.23 V). As an electrochemical reaction, the catalytic efficacy of urea oxidation is largely contingent upon the catalyst employed. Among the plethora of urea oxidation electrocatalysts, nickel-based compounds emerge as the preeminent transition metal due to their cost-effectiveness and heightened activity in urea oxidation. Ni(OH) 2 is endowed with manifold advantages, including structural versatility, facile synthesis, and stability in alkaline environments. This review delineates the recent advancements in Ni(OH) 2 catalysts for electrocatalytic urea oxidation reaction, encapsulating pivotal research findings in morphology, dopant incorporation, defect engineering, and heterogeneous architectures. Additionally, we have proposed personal insights into the challenges encountered in the research on nickel hydroxide for urea oxidation, aiming to promote efficient urea conversion and facilitate its practical applications.

Background : Total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy via minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has emerged as the standard of care for early-stage endometrial cancer (EC). Prior systematic reviews and meta-analyses have focused on outcomes reported solely from randomised controlled trials (RCTs), overlooking valuable data from non-randomised studies. This inaugural systematic review and network meta-analysis comprehensively compares clinical and oncological outcomes between MIS and open surgery for early-stage EC, incorporating evidence from randomised and non-randomised studies. Methods : This study was prospectively registered on PROSPERO (CRD42020186959). All original research of any experimental design reporting clinical and oncological outcomes of surgical treatment for endometrial cancer was included. Study selection was restricted to English-language peer-reviewed journal articles published 1 January 1995-31 December 2021. A Bayesian network meta-analysis was conducted. Results : A total of 99 studies were included in the network meta-analysis, comprising 181,716 women and 14 outcomes. Compared with open surgery, laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgery demonstrated reduced blood loss and length of hospital stay but increased operating time . Compared with laparoscopic surgery, robotic-assisted surgery was associated with a significant reduction in ileus (OR = 0.40, 95% CrI: 0.17-0.87) and total intra-operative complications (OR = 0.38, 95% CrI: 0.17-0.75) as well as a higher disease-free survival (OR = 2.45, 95% CrI: 1.04-6.34). Conclusions : For treating early endometrial cancer, minimal-access surgery via robotic-assisted or laparoscopic techniques appears safer and more efficacious than open surgery. Robotic-assisted surgery is associated with fewer complications and favourable oncological outcomes.

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 1 H MRS) presents a powerful tool for revealing molecular-level metabolite information, complementary to the anatomical insight delivered by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), thus playing a significant role in in vivo/in vitro biological studies. However, its further applications are generally confined by spectral congestion caused by numerous biological metabolites contained within the limited proton frequency range. Herein, we propose a pure-shift-based 1 H localized MRS method as a proof of concept for high-resolution studies of biological samples. Benefitting from the spectral simplification from multiplets to singlet peaks, this method addresses the challenge of spectral congestion encountered in conventional MRS experiments and facilitates metabolite analysis from crowded NMR resonances. The performance of the proposed pure-shift 1 H MRS method is demonstrated on different kinds of samples, including brain metabolite phantom and in vitro biological samples of intact pig brain tissue and grape tissue, using a 7.0 T animal MRI scanner. This proposed MRS method is readily implemented in common commercial NMR/MRI instruments because of its generally adopted pulse-sequence modules. Therefore, this study takes a meaningful step for MRS studies toward potential applications in metabolite analysis and disease diagnosis.

Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus) mainly damages cruciferous crops and causes huge economic losses. Presently, chemical pesticides dominate its control, but prolonged use has led to the development of high resistance. In contrast, the sterile insect technique provides a preventive and control method to avoid the development of resistance. We discovered two genes related to the reproduction of Plutella xylostella and investigated the efficacy of combining irradiation with RNA interference for pest management. The results demonstrate that after injecting PxAKT and PxCDK5 , there was a significant decrease of 28.06% and 25.64% in egg production, and a decrease of 19.09% and 15.35% in the hatching rate compared to the control. The ratio of eupyrene sperm bundles to apyrene sperm bundles also decreased. PxAKT and PxCDK5 were identified as pivotal genes influencing male reproductive processes. We established a dose-response relationship for irradiation (0-200 Gy and 200-400 Gy) and derived the irradiation dose equivalent to RNA interference targeting PxAKT and PxCDK5 . Combining RNA interference with low-dose irradiation achieved a sub-sterile effect on Plutella xylostella , surpassing either irradiation or RNA interference alone. This study enhances our understanding of the genes associated with the reproduction of Plutella xylostella and proposes a novel approach for pest management by combining irradiation and RNA interference.

In 3D microsphere tracking, unlike in-plane motion that can be measured directly by a microscope, axial displacements are resolved by optical interference or a diffraction model. As a result, the axial results are affected by the environmental noise. The immunity to environmental noise increases with measurement accuracy and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In compound digital holography microscopy (CDHM)-based measurements, precise identification of the tracking marker is critical to ensuring measurement precision. The reconstruction centering method (RCM) was proposed to suppress the drawbacks caused by installation errors and, at the same time, improve the correct identification of the tracking marker. The reconstructed center is considered to be the center of the microsphere, rather than the center of imaging in conventional digital holographic microscopy. This method was verified by simulation of rays tracing through microspheres and axial moving experiments. The axial displacements of silica microspheres with diameters of 5 μm and 10 μm were tested by CDHM in combination with the RCM. As a result, the SNR of the proposed method was improved by around 30%. In addition, the method was successfully applied to axial displacement measurements of overlapped microspheres with a resolution of 2 nm.

With the development of biometric identification technology, finger vein identification has received more and more widespread attention for its security, efficiency, and stability. However, because of the performance of the current standard finger vein image acquisition device and the complex internal organization of the finger, the acquired images are often heavily degraded and have lost their texture characteristics. This makes the topology of the finger veins inconspicuous or even difficult to distinguish, greatly affecting the identification accuracy. Therefore, this paper proposes a finger vein image recovery and enhancement algorithm using atmospheric scattering theory. Firstly, to normalize the local over-bright and over-dark regions of finger vein images within a certain threshold, the Gamma transform method is improved in this paper to correct and measure the gray value of a given image. Then, we reconstruct the image based on atmospheric scattering theory and design a pixel mutation filter to segment the venous and non-venous contact zones. Finally, the degraded finger vein images are recovered and enhanced by global image gray value normalization. Experiments on SDUMLA-HMT and ZJ-UVM datasets show that our proposed method effectively achieves the recovery and enhancement of degraded finger vein images. The image restoration and enhancement algorithm proposed in this paper performs well in finger vein recognition using traditional methods, machine learning, and deep learning. The recognition accuracy of the processed image is improved by more than 10% compared to the original image.

Marine-derived Penicillium fungi are productive sources of structurally unique and diverse bioactive secondary metabolites, representing a hot topic in natural product research. This review describes structural diversity, bioactivities and statistical research of 452 new natural products from marine-derived Penicillium fungi covering 2021 to 2023. Sediments are the main sources of marine-derived Penicillium fungi for producing nearly 56% new natural products. Polyketides, alkaloids, and terpenoids displayed diverse biological activities and are the major contributors to antibacterial activity, cytotoxicity, anti-inflammatory and enzyme inhibitory capacities. Polyketides had higher proportions of new bioactive compounds in new compounds than other chemical classes. The characteristics of studies in recent years are presented.

In the past few years, significant advancements in microscopic imaging technology have led to the production of numerous high-resolution images capturing brain neurons at the micrometer scale. The reconstructed structure of neurons from neuronal images can serve as a valuable reference for research in brain diseases and neuroscience. Currently, there lacks an accurate and efficient method for neuron reconstruction. Manual reconstruction remains the primary approach, offering high accuracy but requiring significant time investment. While some automatic reconstruction methods are faster, they often sacrifice accuracy and cannot be directly relied upon. Therefore, the primary goal of this paper is to develop a neuron reconstruction tool that is both efficient and accurate. The tool aids users in reconstructing complete neurons by calculating the confidence of branches during the reconstruction process. The method models the neuron reconstruction as multiple Markov chains, and calculates the confidence of the connections between branches by simulating the reconstruction artifacts in the results. Users iteratively modify low-confidence branches to ensure precise and efficient neuron reconstruction. Experiments on both the publicly accessible BigNeuron dataset and a self-created Whole-Brain dataset demonstrate that the tool achieves high accuracy similar to manual reconstruction, while significantly reducing reconstruction time.

Sunflower ( Helianthus annuus L.) is an important, substantial global oil crop with robust resilience to drought and salt stresses. The TGA (TGACG motif-binding factor) transcription factors, belonging to the basic region leucine zipper (bZIP) family, have been implicated in orchestrating multiple biological processes. Despite their functional significance, a comprehensive investigation of the TGA family's abiotic stress tolerance in sunflowers remains elusive. In the present study, we identified 14 TGA proteins in the sunflower genome, which were unequally distributed across 17 chromosomes. Employing phylogenetic analysis encompassing 149 TGA members among 13 distinct species, we revealed the evolutionary conservation of TGA proteins across the plant kingdom. Collinearity analysis suggested that both HaTGA01 and HaTGA03 were generated due to HaTGA08 gene duplication. Notably, qRT-PCR analysis demonstrated that HaTGA04 , HaTGA05 , and HaTGA14 genes were remarkably upregulated under ABA, MeJA, and salt treatments, whereas HaTGA03 , HaTGA06 , and HaTGA07 were significantly repressed. This study contributes valuable perspectives on the potential roles of the HaTGA gene family under various stress conditions in sunflowers, thereby enhancing our understanding of TGA gene family dynamics and function within this agriculturally significant species.

The precise identification of splice sites is essential for unraveling the structure and function of genes, constituting a pivotal step in the gene annotation process. In this study, we developed a novel deep learning model, DRANetSplicer, that integrates residual learning and attention mechanisms for enhanced accuracy in capturing the intricate features of splice sites. We constructed multiple datasets using the most recent versions of genomic data from three different organisms, Oryza sativa japonica , Arabidopsis thaliana and Homo sapiens . This approach allows us to train models with a richer set of high-quality data. DRANetSplicer outperformed benchmark methods on donor and acceptor splice site datasets, achieving an average accuracy of (96.57%, 95.82%) across the three organisms. Comparative analyses with benchmark methods, including SpliceFinder, Splice2Deep, Deep Splicer, EnsembleSplice, and DNABERT, revealed DRANetSplicer's superior predictive performance, resulting in at least a (4.2%, 11.6%) relative reduction in average error rate. We utilized the DRANetSplicer model trained on O. sativa japonica data to predict splice sites in A. thaliana , achieving accuracies for donor and acceptor sites of (94.89%, 94.25%). These results indicate that DRANetSplicer possesses excellent cross-organism predictive capabilities, with its performance in cross-organism predictions even surpassing that of benchmark methods in non-cross-organism predictions. Cross-organism validation showcased DRANetSplicer's excellence in predicting splice sites across similar organisms, supporting its applicability in gene annotation for understudied organisms. We employed multiple methods to visualize the decision-making process of the model. The visualization results indicate that DRANetSplicer can learn and interpret well-known biological features, further validating its overall performance. Our study systematically examined and confirmed the predictive ability of DRANetSplicer from various levels and perspectives, indicating that its practical application in gene annotation is justified.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a complex degenerative disease of the central nervous system that is clinically characterized by a progressive decline in memory and cognitive function. The pathogenesis of AD is intricate and not yet fully understood. Neuroinflammation, particularly microglial activation-mediated neuroinflammation, is believed to play a crucial role in increasing the risk, triggering the onset, and hastening the progression of AD. Modulating microglial activation and regulating microglial energy metabolic disorder are seen as promising strategies to intervene in AD. The application of anti-inflammatory drugs and the targeting of microglia for the prevention and treatment of AD has emerged as a new area of research interest. This article provides a comprehensive review of the role of neuroinflammation of microglial regulation in the development of AD, exploring the connection between microglial energy metabolic disorder, neuroinflammation, and AD development. Additionally, the advancements in anti-inflammatory and microglia-regulating therapies for AD are discussed.

Objective: To explore the association between the apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype and objectively assessed cognitive function., Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 537 participants underwent a neuropsychological assessment for cognitive function and blood testing for APOE genotype. Based on cognitive test results, participants were stratified into two cohorts: Cognitively Unimpaired participants (CU) and Cognitively Impaired participants (CI). The CI group was further divided into Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Furthermore, we conducted age stratification, categorizing participants into three age groups: age 1: <65 years, age 2: 65-75 years, and age 3: >75 years. We assessed the disparities in cognitive function associated with ε4 carrier status across different age brackets. Plasma amyloid-β levels were measured in a cohort of 294 participants to investigate potential interactions involving ε4 carrier status, diagnosis, sex, or plasma markers., Results: The APOE genotypic distribution among the 537 participants was characterized as follows: ε2/ε2 (5 participants), ε2/ε3 (67), ε2/ε4 (13), ε3/ε3 (330), ε3/ε4 (113), and ε4/ε4 (9). Allele frequencies were: ε3 at 78.21%, ε4 at 13.41%, and ε2 at 8.38%. Notably, the ε4 carrier frequency was markedly elevated in the AD group at 81.8% when compared to MCI at 32.8% and CU at 21.3% ( p < 0.05). Within the Cognitively Unimpaired (CU) cohort, the sole discernible contrast between ε4+ and ε4- emerged in STT-B ( p < 0.05). Within the CI group, ε4 carriers showed statistically poorer scores as compared to non-ε4 carriers in several cognitive tests ( p < 0.05). Age stratification result revealed that, among ε4 carriers, cognitive function scores within the age 3 group were significantly inferior to those of age 1 and age 2 groups ( p < 0.05). Plasma amyloid-β detection was applied to the 294 participants. We tested plasma amyloid-β (Aβ42) and plasma amyloid-β (Aβ40) levels and calculated the Aβ42/Aβ40 ratio. We found that among female ε4 carriers, both Aβ42 and the Aβ42/Aβ40 ratio were notably lower than their male counterparts ( p < 0.05)., Conclusions: The ε3/ε3 was the most prevalent among participants, succeeded by ε3/ε4 and ε2/ε3. The least prevalent were ε2/ε4, ε4/ε4, and ε2/ε2 genotypes. The ε3 was predominant, followed by the ε4 and ε2. Individuals with the ε4 allele exhibited significant cognitive impairment, with an especially high prevalence in AD group at 81.8%. The study unveils a pronounced correlation between the ε4 allele and cognitive deficits, implying its potential role in the advancement and severity of cognitive disorders, notably Alzheimer's disease. Cognitive function declines with age in individuals carrying the ε4, and women are more affected by ε4.

Distributed optical fiber acoustic sensing (DAS) is promising for long-distance intrusion-anomaly detection tasks. However, realistic settings suffer from high-intensity interference noise, compromising the detection performance of DAS systems. To address this issue, we propose STNet, an intrusion detection network based on the Stockwell transform (S-transform), for DAS systems, considering the advantages of the S-transform in terms of noise resistance and ability to detect disturbances. Specifically, the signal detected by a DAS system is divided into space-time data matrices using a sliding window. Subsequently, the S-transform extracts the time-frequency features channel by channel. The extracted features are combined into a multi-channel time-frequency feature matrix and presented to STNet. Finally, a non-maximum suppression algorithm (NMS), suitable for locating intrusions, is used for the post-processing of the detection results. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, experiments were conducted using a realistic high-speed railway environment with high-intensity noise. The experimental results validated the satisfactory performance of the proposed method. Thus, the proposed method offers an effective solution for achieving high intrusion detection rates and low false alarm rates in complex environments.

The registration of bridge point cloud data (PCD) is an important preprocessing step for tasks such as bridge modeling, deformation detection, and bridge health monitoring. However, most existing research on bridge PCD registration only focused on pairwise registration, and payed insufficient attention to multi-view registration. In addition, to recover the overlaps of unordered multiple scans and obtain the merging order, extensive pairwise matching and the creation of a fully connected graph of all scans are often required, resulting in low efficiency. To address these issues, this paper proposes a marker-free template-guided method to align multiple unordered bridge PCD to a global coordinate system. Firstly, by aligning each scan to a given registration template, the overlaps between all the scans are recovered. Secondly, a fully connected graph is created based on the overlaps and scanning locations, and then a graph-partition algorithm is utilized to construct the scan-blocks. Then, the coarse-to-fine registration is performed within each scan-block, and the transformation matrix of coarse registration is obtained using an intelligent optimization algorithm. Finally, global block-to-block registration is performed to align all scans to a unified coordinate reference system. We tested our framework on different bridge point cloud datasets, including a suspension bridge and a continuous rigid frame bridge, to evaluate its accuracy. Experimental results demonstrate that our method has high accuracy.

Millettia speciosa Champ. (MSCP) enjoys widespread recognition for its culinary and medicinal attributes. Despite the extensive history of MSCP cultivation, the disparities in quality and bioactivity between wild and cultivated varieties have remained unexplored. In this study, 20 wild and cultivated MSCP samples were collected from different regions in China. We embarked on a comprehensive investigation of the chemical constituents found in both wild and cultivated MSCP utilizing UHPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap-MS technology and multivariate analysis such as principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA). In total, 62 chemical components were unequivocally identified or tentatively characterized. Via the multivariate statistical analysis, we successfully pinpointed nine compounds with the potential to serve as chemical markers, enabling the differentiation between wild and cultivated MSCP varieties. Moreover, both genotypes exhibited substantial antioxidant and anti-fatigue properties. The bioactivities of wild MSCP were marginally higher when compared to their cultivated counterparts. This study illuminates the impressive antioxidant and anti-fatigue potential present in both wild and cultivated MSCP genotypes, further augmenting the allure of this species and opening new avenues for the economic valorization of MSCP. Hence, this study provides a valuable method for the identification and quality control of MSCP and a method in chemistry and pharmacology to assess an alternative possibility for cultivated MSCP.

Despite the well-documented health benefits of the probiotic Saccharomyces , its application in oral health has not been comprehensively assessed. Dental caries is a transmissible disease initiated by acid production of cariogenic bacteria and yeast, such as Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans , on tooth enamel and followed by subsequent enamel demineralization. Here, we investigated the effect of two Saccharomyces strains ( Saccharomyces boulardii and Saccharomyces cerevisiae ) on S. mutans - C. albicans cross-kingdom interactions using a cariogenic planktonic model. Viable cells, pH changes, and gene expression were measured. S. cerevisiae and S. boulardii inhibited the growth of C. albicans in dual- and multi-species conditions at 4, 6, and 20 h. Saccharomyces also inhibited C. albicans hyphal formation. Furthermore, Saccharomyces reduced the acidity of the culture medium, which usually plummeted below pH 5 when S. mutans and C. albicans were present in the model. The presence of Saccharomyces maintained the culture medium above 6 even after overnight incubation, demonstrating a protective potential against dental enamel demineralization. S. boulardii significantly down-regulated S. mutans atpD and eno gene expression. Overall, our results shed light on a new promising candidate, Saccharomyces , for dental caries prevention due to its potential to create a less cariogenic environment marked by a neutral pH and reduced growth of C. albicans .

Chiral nematic materials have been attracting attention in fields of advanced functional applications due to their unique iridescent colors and tunable helical structure. A precisely decreased pitch is of importance for construction and applications of chiral nematic materials; however, it remains a huge challenge. Herein, cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) is selected as a constructed matrix for chiral nematic films, and ferric chloride (FeCl 3 ) is used as a modification agent. We investigate the effects of the ferric ion loads on the helical structure and optical characteristics of iridescent film. Subsequently, the influence of ferric ions on the assembly process of CNC liquid crystal and the regulation of the structure color of self-assembled monolayers are discussed. Therefore, the CNC/FeCl 3 chiral nematic films showed a blueshifted structural color from orange to blue, which highlights a simple route to achieve the regulation of decreased pitch. Further, we have applied this CNC/FeCl 3 chiral nematic film for benzene gas detection. The sensing performance shows that the CNC/FeCl 3 chiral nematic film reacts to benzene gas, which can be merged into the nematic layer of the CNC and trigger the iron ions chelated on the CNC, consequently arousing the redshift of the reflected wavelength and the effective colorimetric transition. This CNC/FeCl 3 chiral nematic film is anticipated to boost a new gas sensing mechanism for faster and more effective in-situ qualitative investigations.

The flame-retardancy of polymeric materials has garnered great interest. Most of the flame retardants used in copolymers are functionalized additives, which can deteriorate the intrinsic properties of these materials. As a new type of flame retardant, functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be used in surface coatings of polymers. To reduce the flammability, a mixture of phytic acid, multi-wall carbon nanotubes, zirconium-based MOFs, and UiO-66 was coated on a PC/ABS substrate. The structure of the UiO-66-based flame retardant was established by FT-IR, XRD, XPS, and SEM. The flammable properties of coated PC/ABS materials were assessed by LOI, a vertical combustion test, TGA, CCT, and Raman spectroscopy. The presence of a UiO-66-based coating on the PC/ABS surface resulted in a good flame-retardant performance. Heat release and smoke generation were significantly reduced. Importantly, the structure and mechanical properties of PC/ABS were less impacted by the presence of the flame-retardant coating. Hence, this work presents a new strategy for the development of high-performance PC/ABC materials with both excellent flame-retardancy and good mechanical properties.

Background: Mpox virus (MPXV) infections have increased in many countries since May 2022, increasing demand for diagnostic tests and research on the virus. To ensure personnel safety, appropriate and reliable measures are needed to disinfect and inactivate infectious samples; Methods: We evaluated the stability of infectious MPXV cultures stored at different temperatures and through freeze-thaw cycles. Heat physical treatment (56 °C, 70 °C, 95 °C), chemical treatment (beta-propiolactone (BPL)) and two commercialized disinfectants (Micro-Chem Plus (MCP) and ethanol) were tested against infectious MPXV cultures; Results: The results indicated that MPXV stability increases with lower temperatures. The MPXV titer was stable within three freeze-thaw cycles and only decreased by 1.04 log 10 (lg) 50% cell culture infective dose (CCID 50 ) per milliliter (12.44%) after twelve cycles. MPXV could be effectively inactivated at 56 °C for 40 min, 70 °C for 10 min, and 95 °C for 5 min. For BPL inactivation, a 1:1000 volume ratio (BPL:virus) could also effectively inactivate MPXV. A total of 2% or 5% MCP and 75% ethanol treated with MPXV for at least 1 min could reduce >4.25 lg; Conclusions: MPXV shows high stability to temperature and freeze-thaw. Heat and BPL treatments are effective for the inactivation of MPXV, while MCP and ethanol are effective for disinfection, which could help laboratory staff operate the MPXV under safer conditions and improve operational protocols.

The aim of this study was to explore the efficacy and safety of TGFβ1 siRNA lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) modified with different PEG derivatives (PEG5000 cholesterol, abbreviated as CE; tocopherol polyethylene glycol 1000 succinate, abbreviated as TPGS) in the treatment of paclitaxel-resistant non-small-cell lung cancer. Three kinds of TGFβ1 siRNA LNPs were prepared via microfluidics technology, using different PEG derivatives and dosages (CE1.5, CE2.5, TPGS2.5) as variables. Their particle size, zeta potential, contents, and encapsulation efficiencies were determined. The inhibition of TGFβ1 mRNA and protein expression and the effects of the three kinds of LNPs on the proliferation of paclitaxel-resistant non-small-cell lung cancer cells (A549/T cell) were characterized. The distributions of the three siRNA LNPs in nude mice bearing A549/T tumors, especially at the tumor site, were observed using in vivo mouse imaging technology, and their corresponding efficacies were evaluated. The average particle size of the three kinds of TGFβ1 siRNA LNPs was about 70-80 nm, and they were capable of charge flipping. All three siRNA LNPs could effectively inhibit the expression of TGFβ1 mRNA and protein in A549/T cells and inhibit the proliferation of A549/T cells in vitro. The results of in vivo mice imaging showed that the three kinds of siRNA LNPs, when labeled with cypate, retain strong fluorescence in the tumor at 24 h. The pharmacodynamic results, such as for relative tumor volumes and tumor inhibition rates, reveal that TGFβ1 siRNA LNPs modified with CE1.5, CE2.5, or TPGS2.5 can be used to effectively treat paclitaxel-resistant lung adenocarcinoma. The histopathological results showed that the three kinds of LNPs have a certain toxicity but are relatively safe compared to common forms of chemotherapy such as cabazitaxel. TGFβ1 siRNA LNPs modified with CE1.5, CE2.5, and TPGS2.5 can inhibit TGFβ1 mRNA and protein expression in A549/T cells in vitro and can accumulate and play a role in the tumor tissue of nude mice, features that can be exploited for treating paclitaxel-resistant lung adenocarcinoma.

Depressive emotion (DE) refers to clinically relevant depressive symptoms without meeting the diagnostic criteria for depression. Studies have demonstrated that DE can cause spatial cognition impairment. However, the brain network mechanisms underlying DE interference spatial cognition remain unclear. This study aimed to reveal the differences in brain network connections between DE and healthy control (HC) groups during resting state and a spatial cognition task. The longer operation time of the DE group during spatial cognition task indicated DE interference spatial cognition. In the resting state stage, the DE group had weaker network connections in theta and alpha bands than the HC group had. Specifically, the electrodes in parietal regions were hubs of the differential networks, which are related to spatial attention. Moreover, in docking task stages, the left frontoparietal network connections in delta, beta, and gamma bands were stronger in the DE group than those of the HC group. The enhanced left frontoparietal connections in the DE group may be related to brain resource reorganization to compensate for spatial cognition decline and ensure the completion of spatial cognition tasks. Thus, these findings might provide new insights into the neural mechanisms of depressive emotion interference spatial cognition.

Soft grippers have good adaptability and flexibility for grasping irregular or fragile objects, and to further enhance their stiffness, soft grippers with variable stiffness have been developed. However, existing soft grippers with variable stiffness have the disadvantages of complex structure and poor interchangeability. Here, a soft gripper with modular variable stiffness is proposed that has flexible Velcro embedded in the bottom layer of the soft actuator and one side of the variable stiffness cavity respectively, and both the general and variable stiffness grasping modes are achieved by separation or combination. First of all, according to the neo-Hookean model and the assumption of constant curvature, a free bending model of the soft actuator is established and optimal structural parameters of the soft actuator are obtained by the Genetic Algorithm. Then, influence of the driving pressure on the soft actuator stiffness is investigated, and a mathematical model of the variable stiffness is established. Finally, correctness of the statics model and the stiffness model were verified by experiments. Experimental results indicate that the proposed soft gripper with modular variable stiffness structure has excellent adaptability and stability to different objects, outstanding load bearing capacity, and stiffness adjustment capability.

Piezoelectric pumps play an important role in modern medical technology. To improve the flow rate of valveless piezoelectric pumps with flow tube structures and promote the miniaturization and integration of their designs, a cardioid flow tube valveless piezoelectric pump (CFTVPP) is proposed in this study. The symmetric dual-bend tube design of CFTVPP holds great potential in applications such as fluid mixing and heat dissipation systems. The structure and working principle of the CFTVPP are analyzed, and flow resistance and velocity equations are established. Furthermore, the flow characteristics of the cardioid flow tube (CFT) are investigated through computational fluid dynamics, and the output performance of valveless piezoelectric pumps with different bend radii is studied. Experimental results demonstrate that CFTVPP exhibits the pumping effect, with a maximum vibration amplitude of 182.5 μm (at 22 Hz, 100 V) and a maximum output flow rate of 5.69 mL/min (at 25 Hz, 100 V). The results indicate that a smaller bend radius of the converging bend leads to a higher output flow rate, while the performance of valveless piezoelectric pumps with different diverging bends shows insignificant differences. The CFTVPP offers advantages such as a high output flow rate, low cost, small size for easy integration, and ease of manufacturing.

Two undescribed p -terphenyl derivatives, asperterphenylcins A-B ( 1 - 2 ), and two undescribed diphenyl ether derivatives, asperdiphenylcins A-B ( 3 - 4 ), together with three previously described p -terphenyl derivatives-4″-deoxyterprenin ( 5 ), terphenyllin ( 6 ), and 3″-hydroxyterphenyllin ( 7 )-were obtained from the solid-rice culture of the marine-derived fungus Aspergillus candidus HM5-4, which was isolated from sponges from the South China Sea. Their structures were elucidated by HRESIMS data and NMR spectroscopic analysis. Compound 1 showed a strong inhibitory effect on Neoscytalidium dimidiatum , with an inhibition circle diameter of 31.67 ± 2.36 mm at a concentration of 10.0 µg/disc. Compounds 5 and 7 displayed cytotoxic activity against human chronic myeloid leukemia cells (K562), human liver cancer cells (BEL-7402), human gastric cancer cells (SGC-7901), human non-small cell lung cancer cells (A549) and human HeLa cervical cancer cells, with IC 50 values ranging from 3.32 to 60.36 µM, respectively. Compounds 2 , 6 and 7 showed potent inhibitory activity against α -glucosidase, with IC 50 values of 1.26 ± 0.19, 2.16 ± 0.44 and 13.22 ± 0.55 µM, respectively.

The medical community is constantly searching for new and innovative ways to treat cancer, and cellular-membrane-derived artificial vesicles are emerging as a promising avenue for cancer immunotherapy. These vesicles, which are derived from mammal and bacteria cell membranes, offer a range of benefits, including compatibility with living organisms, minimal immune response, and prolonged circulation. By modifying their surface, manipulating their genes, combining them with other substances, stimulating them externally, and even enclosing drugs within them, cellular vesicles have the potential to be a powerful tool in fighting cancer. The ability to merge drugs with diverse compositions and functionalities in a localized area is particularly exciting, as it offers a way to combine different immunotherapy treatments for maximum impact. This review contains information on the various sources of these vesicles and discusses some recent developments in cancer immunotherapy using this promising technology. While there are still obstacles to overcome, the possibilities for cellular vesicles in cancer treatment are truly exciting.

Selective oxidation of ethylbenzene to acetophenne is an important process in both organic synthesis and fine chemicals diligence. The cobalt-based catalysts combined with nitrogen-doped carbon have received great attention in ethylbenzene (EB) oxidation. Here, a series of cobalt catalysts with metallic cobalt nanoparticles (NPs) encapsulated in nitrogen-doped graphite-like carbon shells (Co@NC) have been constructed through the one-pot pyrolysis method in the presence of different nitrogen-containing compounds (urea, dicyandiamide and melamine), and their catalytic performance in solvent-free oxidation of EB with tert-butyl hydrogen peroxide (TBHP) as an oxidant was investigated. Under optimized conditions, the UCo@NC (urea as nitrogen source) could afford 95.2% conversion of EB and 96.0% selectivity to acetophenone, and the substrate scalability was remarkable. Kinetics show that UCo@NC contributes to EB oxidation with an apparent activation energy of 32.3 kJ/mol. The synergistic effect between metallic cobalt NPs and nitrogen-doped graphite-like carbon layers was obviously observed and, especially, the graphitic N species plays a key role during the oxidation reaction. Six undescribed capnosane-type macrocyclic diterpenes sarcocrassolins A-F ( 1 - 6 ) and one related known analog pavidolide D ( 7 ) were isolated from Sarcophyton crassocaule , a soft coral collected off the Nansha Islands, in the South China Sea. Their complete structures, relative configurations and absolute configurations were established through comprehensive spectroscopic analysis, quantum mechanical nuclear magnetic resonance (QM-NMR) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Sarcocrassolins D ( 4 ) and E ( 5 ) showed inhibitory activity against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated inflammatory responses in RAW264.7 cells with IC 50 values of 76.8 ± 8.0 μM and 93.0 ± 3.8 μM, respectively.

Compressed sensing (CS) is a popular data compression theory for many computer vision tasks, but the high reconstruction complexity for images prevents it from being used in many real-world applications. Existing end-to-end learning methods achieved real time sensing but lack theory guarantee for robust reconstruction results. This paper proposes a neural network called RootsNet, which integrates the CS mechanism into the network to prevent error propagation. So, RootsNet knows what will happen if some modules in the network go wrong. It also implements real-time and successfully reconstructed extremely low measurement rates that are impossible for traditional optimization-theory-based methods. For qualitative validation, RootsNet is implemented in two real-world measurement applications, i.e., a near-field microwave imaging system and a pipeline inspection system, where RootsNet easily saves 60% more measurement time and 95% more data compared with the state-of-the-art optimization-theory-based reconstruction methods. Without losing generality, comprehensive experiments are performed on general datasets, including evaluating the key components in RootsNet, the reconstruction uncertainty, quality, and efficiency. RootsNet has the best uncertainty performance and efficiency, and achieves the best reconstruction quality under super low-measurement rates.

Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) include various neurological disorders with high genetic heterogeneity, characterized by delayed or impaired cognition, communication, adaptive behavior, and psychomotor skills. These disorders result in significant morbidity for children, thus burdening families and healthcare/educational systems. However, there is a lack of early diagnosis and effective therapies. Therefore, a more connected approach is required to explore these disorders. Microglia, the primary phagocytic cells within the central nervous system, are crucial in regulating neuronal viability, influencing synaptic dynamics, and determining neurodevelopmental outcomes. Although the neurobiological basis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia (SZ) has attracted attention in recent decades, the role of microglia in ASD and SZ remains unclear and requires further discussion. In this review, the important and frequently multifaceted roles that microglia play during neurodevelopment are meticulously emphasized and potential microglial mechanisms that might be involved in conditions such as ASD and SZ are postulated. It is of utmost importance to acquire a comprehensive understanding of the complexities of the interplay between microglia and neurons to design effective, targeted therapeutic strategies to mitigate the effects of NDDs.

SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs) show increasing transmissibility and infectivity and induce substantial injuries to human health and the ecology. Therefore, it is vital to understand the related features for controlling infection. In this study, SARS-CoV-2 WIV04 (prototype) and five VOCs (Beta, Delta, Omicron BA.1, BA.2 and BA.5 variants) were inoculated in Vero cells to observe their growth activities. Apart from evaluating the environmental stability at different temperatures, residual virus titers and infectivity at different temperatures (4 °C, room temperature (RT) and 37 °C) were measured over 7 days. The experiment also assessed the infectivity for different incubation durations. The growth capacity assay suggested that the WIV04, Beta and Delta variants replicated efficiently in Vero cells compared with Omicron Variants, and BA.2 replicated more efficiently in Vero cells than BA.1 and BA.5. In addition, all variants exhibited longer survivals at 4 °C and could remain infectious after 7 days, compared to RT' survival after 5 days and at 37 °C after 1 day. The virus infection assay indicated that the Omicron variant had a weaker ability to infect cells compared to the WIV04, Beta and Delta strains, and a longer infection time was required for these strains, except for BA.2.

To address the fuzzy reconstruction effect on distant objects in unbounded scenes and the difficulty in feature matching caused by the thin structure of power lines in images, this paper proposes a novel image-based method for the reconstruction of power transmission lines (PTLs). The dataset used in this paper comprises PTL progressive motion sequence datasets, constructed by a visual acquisition system carried by a developed Flying-walking Power Line Inspection Robot (FPLIR). This system captures close-distance and continuous images of power lines. The study introduces PL-NeRF, that is, an enhanced method based on the Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) method for reconstructing PTLs. The highlights of PL-NeRF include (1) compressing the unbounded scene of PTLs by exploiting the spatial compression of normal L∞; (2) encoding the direction and position of the sample points through Integrated Position Encoding (IPE) and Hash Encoding (HE), respectively. Compared to existing methods, the proposed method demonstrates good performance in 3D reconstruction, with fidelity indicators of PSNR = 29, SSIM = 0.871, and LPIPS = 0.087. Experimental results highlight that the combination of PL-NeRF with progressive motion sequence images ensures the integrity and continuity of PTLs, improving the efficiency and accuracy of image-based reconstructions. In the future, this method could be widely applied for efficient and accurate 3D reconstruction and inspection of PTLs, providing a strong foundation for automated monitoring of transmission corridors and digital power engineering.

The partial upgrading of "tar-like" Canadian bitumen is an essential process to reduce its viscosity to an acceptable range that meets the required pipeline specifications. An innovative and potentially greener solution has emerged in the form of microwave irradiation. This work proposes and demonstrates the use of an electrically powered commercial microwave along with carbon-based microwave susceptors (activated carbon, biochar, coke, and graphite) to promote localized thermal cracking within bitumen at a temperature as low as 150 °C, compared to the conventional method of 400 °C. The remarkable results show that just 0.1 wt% of carbon additives can reduce the viscosity of bitumen by 96% with just 10 min of microwaving at 200 °C. A Saturates, Aromatics, Resins, and Asphaltenes (SARA) analysis reveals that the mass fractions of light components (saturates) are almost doubled and that almost one-third of heavy polar hydrocarbon constituents are cracked and decomposed into much lighter molecules, resulting in higher-quality, less viscous bitumen. Furthermore, this study highlights the key role of the surface area and porosity of the carbon microwave susceptor in absorbing microwave radiation, offering exciting new avenues for optimization. Microwave-assisted partial upgrading of bitumen is a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to conventional upgrading, producing upgraded bitumen that requires significantly less diluent at a lower cost prior to pipeline transportation.

Mosla chinensis Maxim is an annual herb with many potential purposes in agricultural, industrial, and pharmaceutical fields. At present, the extract of the whole plant from M. chinensis has been proven to demonstrate antifungal, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities. Previous studies focused on the enzyme pretreatment in hydrodistillation from M. chinensis . However, organic solvent or supercritical fluid carbon dioxide extraction (SFE-CO 2 ) methods, which are commonly utilized in industry, have seldom been studied and cannot provide multiple evaluations of yield. In this work, we analysed compounds from M. chinensis by HPLC-DAD, discussed n -hexane extraction, and conducted further investigations on SFE-CO 2 through the design of response surface methodology (RSM). The sample obtained from pilot-scale SFE-CO 2 was also tested against nine kinds of microorganisms. Single-factor results revealed that the extraction rates from M. chinensis by steam distillation, n -hexane extraction, and SFE-CO 2 were 1%, 2.09%, and 3.26%, respectively. RSM results showed a significant improvement in extraction rate through optimising pressure and time, and the interaction of both factors was more important than that of temperature-pressure and temperature-time. A pilot-scale test with an extraction rate of 3.34% indicated that the predicted RSM condition was operable. In addition, samples from the pilot-scale SFE-CO 2 showed antibacterial effects against three previously unreported bacteria ( Gardnerella vaginalis , methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus , and Propionibacterium acnes ). These results fill the gap in previous research and provide more information for the application and development of M. chinensis in the future.
