In recent years, heavy rainfall events have occurred frequently in the Qinba region. Forecasting and predicting heavy rainfall in the Qinba region is difficult due to the unique underlying terrain and complicated mechanisms involved. One significant weather system that might bring significant rainfall to the region is the southwest vortex (SWV); however, its different positions, intensities, and interaction with other weather systems might result in precipitation with different intensities and distributions. In this study, ERA-5 reanalysis data, FY-4A satellite data, and conventional observation data were used to examine heavy rainstorms that occurred in the Qinba region in the periods of 3–4 September 2021 (referred to as Stage I) and 4–5 September 2021 (referred to as Stage II), while the SWV was in effect. During Stage I, the northwest vortex (NWV) and SWV generated a mesoscale shear line and mesoscale convective complex (MCC) in the Qinba region. This led to a considerable area of heavy rainfall, with a maximum hourly precipitation of 129 mm and heavy precipitation at 15 stations. During Stage II, a mesoscale convective system (MCS) influenced by the SWV was initiated by a low-level jet, resulting in a localized heavy downpour with a maximum hourly precipitation of 72 mm. Significant topography-forced uplift was found in both Stages I and II in the high-altitude Qinba region. Furthermore, the rainfall was stronger during Stage I due to the secondary circulation that developed in the middle and lower levels. Turbine-induced velocity deficit is the main reason to reduce wind farm power generation and increase the fatigue loadings. It is meaningful to investigate turbine-induced wake structures by a simple and accurate method. In this study, a series of single turbine wake models are proposed by combining different spanwise distributions and wake boundary expansion models. It is found that several combined wake models with high hit rates are more accurate and universal. Subsequently, the wake models for multiple wind turbines are also investigated by considering the combined wake models for single turbine and proper superposition approaches. Several excellent plans are provided where the velocity, turbulence intensity, and wind power generation for multiple wind turbines can be accurately evaluated. Finally, effects of thrust coefficient and ambient turbulence intensity are studied. In summary, the combined wake models for both single and multiple wind turbines are proposed and validated, enhancing the precision of wind farm layout optimization will be helped by using these wake models. A preliminary study is carried out to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of a square cylinder with Savonius wind turbines and to explain the reason why this kind of structure can suppress wind-induced vibrations. A series of computational fluid dynamics simulations are performed for the square cylinders with stationary and rotating wind turbines at the cylinder corners. The turbine orientation and the turbine rotation speed are two key factors that affect aerodynamic characteristics of the cylinder for the stationary and rotating turbine cases, respectively. The numerical simulation results show that the presence of either the stationary or rotating wind turbines has a significant effect on wind forces acting on the square cylinder. For the stationary wind turbine cases, the mean drag and fluctuating lift coefficients decrease by 37.7% and 90.7%, respectively, when the turbine orientation angle is 45°. For the rotating wind turbine cases, the mean drag and fluctuating lift coefficients decrease by 34.2% and 86.0%, respectively, when the rotation speed is 0.2 times of vortex shedding frequency. Over the past few decades, the topography and river-tide-salt dynamic characteristics of the Pearl River Delta (PRD) have undergone a myriad of changes due to the unnatural evolution process induced by diverse human activities, such as dam construction, land reclamation, sand excavation, and dredging for navigation. To investigate the impact of human activities on hydrodynamic structures in the PRD of the Modaomen Estuary (ME) during the dry season, a three-dimensional river-tide-salt dynamic model was used to simulate the hydrodynamic characteristics of the ME for different historical periods. The model results indicate that large-scale land reclamation weakened the tidal dynamics and mixing effects in the ME, promoting gravity circulation with opposite velocity directions at the surface and bottom within 15 km downstream of the estuary. Additionally, riverbed downcutting enhanced the tidal dynamics, which intensified saltwater intrusion, leading to the spatial scale-of-gravity circulation expanding 1–2 times. The enhancement of riverbed downcutting on the tidal dynamics in the ME was significantly greater than the weakening effect of land reclamation. Hence, due to the comprehensive influence of human activities between the 1970s and 2010, the hydrodynamic structures in the ME changed from a state of atypical gravity circulation, with nonobvious stratification, to a state of highly stratified and large-scale gravity circulation. The pollutant diffusion in the ME under different scenarios is also discussed in this paper. The results show that reclamation results in weakening of tidal dynamics, which is not conducive to the mixing and diffusion of pollutants in the estuary. However, the narrowed estuary due to land reclamation is conducive to the rapid entry of pollutants into the open sea. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
