Tree height is one of the key dendrometric parameters for indirectly estimating the timber volume or aboveground biomass of a forest. Field measurement is time-consuming and labor-intensive, while unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-borne LiDAR is a more efficient tool for acquiring tree heights of large-area forests. Although individual tree heights extracted from point cloud data are of high accuracy, they are still affected by some weather and environment factors. In this study, taking a planted M. glyptostroboides (Metasequoia glyptostroboides Hu & W.C. Cheng) stand as the study object, we preliminarily assessed the effects of various illumination conditions (solar altitude angle and cloud cover) on tree height extraction using UAV LiDAR. The eight point clouds of the target stand were scanned at four time points (sunrise, noon, sunset, and night) in two consecutive days (sunny and overcast), respectively. The point clouds were first classified into ground points and aboveground vegetation points, which accordingly produced digital elevation model (DEM) and digital surface model (DSM). Then, the canopy height model (CHM) was obtained by subtracting DEM from DSM. Subsequently, individual trees were segmented based on the seed points identified by local maxima filtering. Finally, the individual tree heights of sample trees were separately extracted and assessed against the in situ measured values. As results, the R2 and RMSEs of tree heights obtained in the overcast daytime were commonly better than those in the sunny daytime; the R2 and RMSEs at night were superior among all time points, while those at noon were poorest. These indicated that the accuracy of individual tree height extraction had an inverse correlation with the intensity of illumination. To obtain more accurate tree heights for forestry applications, it is best to acquire point cloud data using UAV LiDAR at night, or at least not at noon when the illumination is generally strongest. Locating the fault position is a crucial part of the failure mechanism analysis of integrated circuits. This paper proposes a hard defect locating system based on Thermal Laser Stimulation (TLS) technology. The equation for laser-induced changes in the electrical parameters of semiconductor devices is a good guide to the hardware and software design of the hard defect locating system. The scanning mode of fast total scanning combined with slow point-to-point scanning can quickly locate abnormal areas. A modified median absolute difference (MAD) method is applied to the extraction of anomalous data. The system software can automatically and collaboratively control the 3D mobile station, laser, and signal acquisition unit. It also can intuitively display the distribution of abnormal points on the infrared image. Using a failure MRAM chip and a good one to conduct a comparative test, the abnormal points distributed on the infrared image of the chip indicate that the failure area is in the digital module or eFuse module of the chip, and the Emission Microscopy (EMMI) experiment also verifies the accuracy of the test system. Some cephalopods (squids, octopuses, and cuttlefishes) produce dynamic structural colors, for camouflage or communication. The key to this remarkable capability is one group of specialized cells called iridocytes, which contain aligned membrane-enclosed platelets of high-reflective reflectins and work as intracellular Bragg reflectors. These reflectins have unusual amino acid compositions and sequential properties, which endows them with functional characteristics: an extremely high reflective index among natural proteins and the ability to answer various environmental stimuli. Based on their unique material composition and responsive self-organization properties, the material community has developed an impressive array of reflectin- or iridocyte-inspired optical systems with distinct tunable reflectance according to a series of internal and external factors. More recently, scientists have made creative attempts to engineer mammalian cells to explore the function potentials of reflectin proteins as well as their working mechanism in the cellular environment. Progress in wide scientific areas (biophysics, genomics, gene editing, etc.) brings in new opportunities to better understand reflectins and new approaches to fully utilize them. The work introduced the composition features, biochemical properties, the latest developments, future considerations of reflectins, and their inspiration applications to give newcomers a comprehensive understanding and mutually exchanged knowledge from different communities (e.g., biology and material). Capturing the spatial heterogeneity and characteristic scale is the key to determining the spatial patterns of land surfaces. In this research, the core observation area of the middle reaches of the Heihe River Basin was selected as the study area, and the scale identification of several typical objects was carried out by implementing experiments on moderate- and high-resolution remotely sensed ASTER and CASI NDVI images. The aim was to evaluate the potential of the local variance and semivariance analysis to characterize the spatial heterogeneity of objects, track their changes with scale, and obtain their scales. Our results show that natural objects have multiscale structures. For a single object with a recognizable size, the results of the two methods are relatively consistent. For continuously distributed samples of indistinctive size, the scale obtained by the local variance is smaller than that obtained by the semivariance. As the image resolution becomes coarser and the research scopes expand, the scales of objects are also increasing. This article also indicates that with a small research area of uniform objects, the local variance and semivariance are easy to facilitate researchers to quickly select the appropriate spatial resolution of remote sensing data according to the research area. The influence of temperature on plants is essential. However, our knowledge on the intricate regulation process underlying heat stress (HS) response in plants is limited. Recently, information about thermal sensors in vivo has begun to emerge. In this study, another primary environmental stimulus, light, was verified once again to work with temperature synergistically on plants, through the modulation of numerous biological processes. With the application of transcriptomic analysis, a substantial number of heat-responsive genes were detected involved in both light- and phytohormone-mediated pathways in Arabidopsis. During this process, phytoreceptor phyB acts as a molecular switch to turn on or turn off several other genes HS response, under different light conditions. Furthermore, a morphological study showed the afunction of phyB enhanced plants thermal tolerance, confirming the important role of this phytochrome in temperature perception and response in plants. This study adds data to the picture of light and temperature signaling cross-talk in plants, which is important for the exploration of complicated HS responses or light-mediated mechanisms. μ-Conotoxin GIIIA, a peptide toxin isolated from Conus geographus , preferentially blocks the skeletal muscle sodium channel Na V 1.4. GIIIA folds compactly to a pyramidal structure stabilized by three disulfide bonds. To assess the contributions of individual disulfide bonds of GIIIA to the blockade of Na V 1.4, seven disulfide-deficient analogues were prepared and characterized, each with one, two, or three pairs of disulfide-bonded Cys residues replaced with Ala. The inhibitory potency of the analogues against Na V 1.4 was assayed by whole cell patch-clamp on rNa V 1.4, heterologously expressed in HEK293 cells. The corresponding IC 50 values were 0.069 ± 0.005 μM for GIIIA, 2.1 ± 0.3 μM for GIIIA-1, 3.3 ± 0.2 μM for GIIIA-2, and 15.8 ± 0.8 μM for GIIIA-3 (-1, -2 and -3 represent the removal of disulfide bridges Cys3-Cys15, Cys4-Cys20 and Cys10-Cys21, respectively). Other analogues were not active enough for IC 50 measurement. Our results indicate that all three disulfide bonds of GIIIA are required to produce effective inhibition of Na V 1.4, and the removal of any one significantly lowers its sodium channel binding affinity.
