The present paper reviews the hot topics at the 18th Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water, and Environment Systems (SDEWES) held from 24 to 29 September 2023 in Dubrovnik, Croatia. The selected papers, including aspects of biomass energy application, energy saving in building, low-carbon development and climate change adaptation, hybrid application of sustainable energy, energy storage system, and other measures in sustainable development, are published in this Special Issue of Energies. The 12 selected papers in Energies and corresponding literature that relates to the above topics and has been published in the most recent year are reviewed. In particular, diversifying energy applications are trending towards comprehensive integration with more efficient clean energy capacities for global energy procurement, which can also offer increased resilience and sustainability, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, mitigate environmental impacts, and enhance energy security through a mix of renewable sources and innovative technologies. Meanwhile, energy storage has become increasingly important, which can manage the intermittent of renewable energy, stabilize the grid, and improve energy security and resilience against disruptions. In addition to conventional solar energy storage, biomass energy storage, building energy storage, water storage, etc., can also reduce the overall energy costs, deferring investments in additional transmission infrastructure. Energy harvesting from cleaner sources and preserving the environment from dangerous gasses are presently the key priorities globally to maintain sustainable development. In this context, photovoltaic technology plays a vital role in generating energy from ternary organic solar cells. Ternary organic solar cells display significant potential for achieving outstanding photovoltaic performance compared to binary structures. Over the past few years, significant endeavors to develop novel organic materials have led to a consistent rise in efficiency, surpassing 19% for single-junction devices. In our study, we simulated an inverted ternary organic solar cell (TOSC) structure employing the one-dimensional optical and drift diffusion model and using "Oghma-Nano 8.0.034" software by optimizing the active blend thickness at 80 nm within the structure of ITO/SnO2/PM6:D18:L8-BO/PEDOT:PSS/Ag. We simulated different performance parameters such as EQE, Photo-CELIV, PCE, Jsc, Voc, and FF with different active layer thicknesses ranging from 50 to 200 nm to discover the behavior of the device in terms of efficiency parameters. Furthermore, the structure attained a PCE of 20% for an active layer thickness of 80 nm within a Jsc of 27.2 mA cm−2, a Voc of 0.89 V, and an FF of 82.3%. Extensive research on organic solar cells (OSCs) over the past decade has led to efficiency improvements exceeding 18%. Enhancing the efficacy of binary organic solar cells involves multiple factors, including the strategic selection of materials. The choice of donor and acceptor materials, which must exhibit complementary absorption spectra, is crucial. Additionally, optimizing the solar cell structure, such as adjusting the thickness of layers and incorporating hole-transporting layers, can further increase efficiency. In this study, we simulated three different novels within the use of the inorganic SnO2 on the OSCs within this specific arrangement of structures using a drift-diffusion model: direct and inverted binary; direct ternary configurations of OSCs, specifically ITO/PEDOT: PSS/PM6:L8-BO/SnO2/Ag, ITO/SnO2/PM6:L8-BO/PEDOT: PSS/Ag; and FTO/PEDOT: PSS/PM6:D18:L8-BO/SnO2/Ag. These structures achieved power conversion efficiencies (PCE) of 18.34%, 18.37%, and 19.52%, respectively. The direct ternary device achieved an important Voc of 0.89 V and an FF of 82.3%, which is high in comparison with other simulated results in the literature. Our research focused on the role of SnO2 as an inorganic electron transport layer in enhancing efficiency in all three configurations. We also evaluated the properties of these structures by simulating external quantum efficiency (EQE), which results in a broadened absorption spectrum from 380 nm to 900 nm for both binary and ternary devices. Furthermore, we measured the spectral distribution of absorbed photons, and photo-charge extraction by linearly increasing voltage (photo-CELIV) to assess charge extraction and generation rates as well as charge mobility. With the reduction in fossil fuels and growing concerns about global warming, energy has become one of the most important issues facing humanity. It is crucial to improve energy utilization efficiency and promote a low-carbon transition. In comparison with traditional heat exchangers, heat pipe heat exchangers indicate high compactness, a flexible arrangement, complete separation of hot and cold fluids, good isothermal operations, etc. As a result, heat pipe heat exchangers have attracted wide attention and application in various fields in recent years. This paper provides an overview of the application of heat pipe heat exchangers, with a focus on the application in waste heat recovery, and analyzes the opportunities and challenges of heat pipe heat exchanger applications based on existing publications. This study investigates the airflow and thermal management of a compact electric energy storage system by using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation. A porous medium model for predicting the flow resistance performance of the battery modules in a battery cabinet is developed. By studying the influence of rack shapes, the effects of heat exchanger arrangements and other parameters on the airflow and battery thermal distribution are analyzed. When applying a larger bottom air channel, the inlet flow uniformity of each battery cabin in the cabinet increases by 5%. Meanwhile, temperature standard deviation decreases by 0.18 while raising the flow rate from 3 m/s to 8 m/s, indicating better temperature uniformity in the battery cabin. When the charge–discharge ratio reaches 0.5 C, the temperature deviation of the entire cabinet significantly increases, reaching 8 K. Furthermore, a rack-level thermal management scheme is proposed to effectively reduce the thermal deviation of the container electric energy storage system and improve the overall temperature uniformity. Results reveal that the rack-level thermal management of the wavy cabinet in the electric storage container can effectively improve the thermal uniformity of the distributed battery cabin, and the overall thermal deviation is controlled within 1.0 K. The current applications in the energy sector are based largely on fossil fuels which release greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere. To face the issue of global warming, the energy sector has to transfer to and develop sustainable energy solutions that do not release carbon emissions. This is one of the primary motivators for the SDEWES conference as well as for this review, and previous ones, examining the most recent works based on sustainable and green energy production in such fields. The 17th Conference on the Sustainable Development of Energy, Water, and Environment Systems (SDEWES) was held on 6–10 November 2022 in Paphos, Cyprus. The SDEWES conference aims at solving complex and ongoing concerns that approach a long-term perspective and supporting innovative solutions and continuous monitoring and evaluation. This review paper aims at collecting the main presented papers focused on the following hot topics: low-carbon technologies based on renewable and clean-energy systems, including mainly biomass, solar, and wind energy applications; energy storage systems; hydrogen-based systems; energy-saving strategies in buildings; and the adoption of smart management strategies using renewable energy systems. These topics are investigated in order to propose solutions to address the issues of climate change, water scarcity, and energy saving. From the analyzed works, we note that some key issues for sustainable development remain to be further addressed: such as novel and advanced energy storage systems, green hydrogen production, novel low-temperature district heating and cooling networks, novel solar technologies for the simultaneous production of power and high temperature heat, solar desalination for hydrogen production systems, and agrivoltaic systems for the production of power and food. Single-junction organic solar cells have reached a power conversion efficiency of 20% with narrow bandgap non-fullerene electron acceptor materials such as Y6, as well as with large band gap electron donor materials and their derivatives. The power conversion efficiency improvement of single-junction organic solar cells is a result of highly efficient light harvesting in the near-infrared light range and reduced energy losses with the most promising active layer layout currently available, Bulk-Heterojunction. Ternary blending is known to be the most advanced strategy to construct Bulk-Heterojunction structures in organic solar cells at present. In this review, we examine different devices based on Bulk-Heterojunction structures with efficient electron donors and acceptors. Then, we review the performance of binary and ternary organic solar cells with high power conversion efficiency, in conjunction with different anode and cathode interfaces used in recent studies of high-power conversion efficiency. Electronic devices are commonly used for exploiting and extracting shale oil in deep downhole environments. However, high−temperature−and−pressure downhole environments jeopardize the safe operation of electronic components due to their severe thermal conditions. In the present study, an active thermal−insulation system is proposed, which consists of a spiral annular cooling plate (ACP), a thermal storage container with phase−change material (PCM) and an aerogel mat (AM). The effect of the ACP's structure, layout and working−medium flowrate on the heat−protection performance were experimentally measured; temperature−control capability and system−operating time were used as the criteria. The results show that the AM layer is necessary and that the inner−ACP case displays better thermal−protection performance. Next, a dimensionless temperature−control factor (TCF) was proposed to evaluate the trade−off between temperature control and the system's operating time. Note that the TCF of the spiral ACP can be improved by 1.62 times compared to the spiral−ACP case. Since the lower flowrate allows better TCF and longer operating times, intermittent control of the flowrate with a 1−minute startup and 2−minute stopping time at 200 mL/min can further extend the system's operating time to 5 h, and the TCF is 3.3 times higher than with a constant flowrate of vm = 200 mL/min. Sustainability has become a broad societal goal, aiming to ensure that human beings coexist safely and harmoniously with nature over a longer time. The influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on the global economy is coming to an end. The development and merits of sustainable energy supply, advanced technology, and economic features have received significant attention over the last few decades. However, significant gaps still exist with respect to how to design, construct, and implement hybrid and optimal energy systems with the lowest investment and cost. Since 2002, the Sustainable Development of Energy, Water, and Environment Systems (SDEWES) conferences have become a significant meeting venue for researchers to introduce, discuss, share, and disseminate novel concepts and ideas. This paper presents an overview of published articles in the Special Issues (SIs) dedicated by the series SDEWES conferences, especially those published in Energies recommended by the 16th SDEWES Conference, which was held on 10–15 October 2021 in Dubrovnik, Croatia. This SI in Energies focused on four main topics, including the application of renewable bioenergy, component enhancement in renewable systems, sustainable development for buildings and economic analysis and evaluation for sustainability. The collected papers provide insight into the topics related to recent advances in improving sustainable efficiency, including studies on waste-to-wealth techniques, utilization of hybrid bioenergy systems, heat exchangers and other components for performance enhancement, energy supply and demand analysis, low-temperature DHC systems, techno-economic assessment, and environmental evaluation. In this article, numerical simulations of the rotational flow of water-based magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) nanofluid containing single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) and hybrid nanofluid containing single- and multiple-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT-MWCNT) over a stretching sheet are performed. The primary goal is to improve thermal transport efficiency due to CNTs extraordinary thermal conductivity. The 3D governing equations for microorganism concentration, energy, momentum, concentration, and mass conservation are transformed into 1D ordinary differentiation via similarity transformations. In a MATLAB environment, the resultant system of equations (ODEs) are then solved using Runge–Kutta fourth order with the shooting process. Tables and graphs were used to show the results of physical parameters. According to our findings, enhancing the rotational parameter λ and the magnetic field M reduce the base fluid velocity along the x-axis, and on the other hand, the opposite tendency is shown along the y-axis. Furthermore, the velocities, temperature, and microorganism concentration profiles of hybrid nanofluid ( S W C N T − M W C N T /H2O) are found to be higher than those of mono nanofluid ( H 2 O + S W C N T ), while the concentration profile is found to be lower. In this paper, the flow condensation heat transfer characteristics of R32 in a horizontally oriented tube with a horizontal U-bend (HUB tube) and a horizontally oriented tube with a vertical U-bend (VUB tube) were numerically investigated. The volume of fluid (VOF) multiphase model with the mass transfer assumption by Lee is adopted to simulate the flow condensation behavior of R32, which are validated by well-known empirical correlations. The influence of structural parameters, mass flux and vapor quality on the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) and liquid film distribution is investigated. Meanwhile, the local liquid film thickness (LLFT) and local heat transfer coefficient (LHTC) are also depicted. The phase transition at the U-bend section is captured. Results show that the U-bend has remarkable disturbance on the flow pattern and LHTC due to the effect of centrifugal force where the LLFT is changed, inducing strong secondary flow. The LHTC is increased by a maximum of 8.47% and 11.86% in VUB tube and HUB tube, respectively, when compared to the case in a horizontally straight oriented tube at the same operating conditions. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the supply chains of traditional fossil fuels. According to a report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) from 2020, oil-refining activity fell by more than the IEA had anticipated. It was also assumed that the demand in 2021 would likely be 2.6 million bpd below the 2019 levels. However, renewable markets have shown strong resilience during the crisis. It was determined that renewables are on track to meet 80% of the growth in electricity demand over the next 10 years and that sustainable energy will act as the primary source of electricity production instead of coal. On the other hand, the report also emphasized that measures for reducing environmental pollution and CO2 emissions are still insufficient and that significant current investments should be further expanded. The Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems (SDEWES) conference series is dedicated to the advancement and dissemination of knowledge on methods, policies and technologies for improving the sustainability of development by decoupling growth from the use of natural resources. The 15th SDEWES conference was held online from 1–5 September 2020; more than 300 reports with 7 special sections were organized on the virtual conference platform. This paper presents the major achievements of the recommended papers in the Special Issue of Energies. Additionally, related studies connected to the above papers published in the SDEWES series are also introduced, including the four main research fields of energy saving and emission reduction, renewable energy applications, the development of district heating systems, and the economic assessment of sustainable energy. The purpose of the present study is to simulate the continuous bend erosion process in different directions, using the dense discrete particle model (DDPM). The influence of the length of the straight pipe in the middle of the continuous bend is investigated. The Rosin–Rammler method is introduced to define the diameter distribution of erosion particles, which is theoretically closer to the actual engineering erosion situation. The numerical model is based on the Euler–Lagrange method, in which the continuous phase and the particle phase are established on a fixed Euler grid. The Lagrange model is used to track the particles, and the interaction between particles is simulated by particle flow mechanics theory. The velocity field distribution, pressure variation, and turbulent kinetic energy of gas–solid two-phase flow, composed of natural gas and gravel in the pipeline, are studied. The simulation results, using the one-way coupled DPM and the four-way coupled DDPM, are compared and analyzed. The results show that the DDPM has good accuracy in predicting the distribution of the continuous bend erosion processes in different directions. The erosion rates of particles with an average distribution size of 50 μm are significantly increased (8.32 times), compared with that of 10 μm, at the same gas transmission rate. It is also indicated that it is important to consider the impact between particles and the coupling between fluid and particles in the erosion simulation of the continuous elbow when using the CFD method. In this paper, a mathematical model is established to examine the impacts of Stefan blowing on the unsteady magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow of an electrically conducting nanofluid over a stretching sheet in the existence of thermal radiation, Arrhenius activation energy and chemical reaction. It is proposed to use the Buongiorno nanofluid model to synchronize the effects of magnetic and electric fields on the velocity and temperature fields to enhance the thermal conductivity. We utilized suitable transformation to simplify the governing partial differential equation (PDEs) into a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The obtained equations were solved numerically with the help of the Runge–Kutta 4th order using the shooting technique in a MATLAB environment. The impact of the developing flow parameters on the flow characteristics is analyzed appropriately through graphs and tables. The velocity, temperature, and nanoparticle concentration profiles decrease for various values of involved parameters, such as hydrodynamic slip, thermal slip and solutal slip. The nanoparticle concentration profile declines in the manifestation of the chemical reaction rate, whereas a reverse demeanor is noted for the activation energy. With the rapid development of integrated circuit technology, the heat flux of electronic chips has been sharply improved. Therefore, heat dissipation becomes the key technology for the safety and reliability of the electronic equipment. In addition, the electronic chips are distributed discretely and used periodically in most applications. Based these problems, the characteristics of the heat transfer performance of flow boiling in parallel channels with discrete heat source distribution are investigated by a VOF model. Meanwhile, the two-phase flow instability in parallel channels with discrete heat source distribution is analyzed based on a one-dimensional homogeneous model. The results indicate that the two-phase flow pattern in discrete heat source distribution is more complicated than that in continuous heat source distribution. It is necessary to optimize the relative position of the discrete heat sources, which will affect the heat transfer performance. In addition, compared with the continuous heat source, the flow stability of discrete heat sources is better with higher and lower inlet subcooling. In this paper, the heat transfer of pin-fin plate unit (PFPU) under static and oscillating conditions are numerically studied using the discrete element method (DEM). The flow and heat transfer characteristics of the PFPU with sinusoidal oscillation are investigated under the conditions of oscillating frequency of 0–10 Hz, amplitude of 0–5 mm and oscillating direction of Y and Z. The contact number, contact time, porosity and heat transfer coefficient under the above conditions are analyzed and compared with the smooth plate. The results show that the particle far away from the plate can transfer heat with the pin-fin of PFPU, and the oscillating PFPU can significantly increase the contact number and enhance the temperature diffusion and heat transfer. The heat transfer coefficient of PFPU increases with the increase of oscillating frequency and amplitude. When the PFPU oscillates along the Y direction with the amplitude of 1 mm and the frequency of 10 Hz, the heat transfer coefficient of PFPU is increased by 28% compared with that of the smooth plate. Compared with the oscillation along the Z direction, the oscillation along the Y direction has a significant enhancement on the heat transfer of PFPU. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As a vital power propulsion device, gas turbines have been widely applied in aircraft. However, fly ash is easily ingested by turbine engines, causing blade abrasion or even film hole blockage. In this study, a three-dimensional turbine cascade model is conducted to analyze particle trajectories at the blade leading edge, under a film-cooled protection. A deposition mechanism, based on the particle sticking model and the particle detachment model, was numerically investigated in this research. Additionally, the invasion efficiency of the AGTB-B1 turbine blade cascade was investigated for the first time. The results indicate that the majority of the impact region is located at the leading edge and on the pressure side. In addition, small particles (1 μm and 5 μm) hardly impact the blade's surface, and most of the impacted particles are captured by the blade. With particle size increasing, the impact efficiency increases rapidly, and this value exceeds 400% when the particle size is 50 μm. Invasion efficiencies of small particles (1 μm and 5 μm) are almost zero, and the invasion efficiency approaches 12% when the particle size is 50 μm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The global COVID-19 pandemic has had strong impacts on national and international freight, construction and tourism industry, supply chains, and has resulted in a rapid decline in the demand for traditional energy sources. In fact, research has outlined that urban areas depend on global supply chains for their day-to-day basic functions, including energy supplies, food and safe access to potable water. The disruption of global supply chains can leave many urban areas in a very vulnerable position, in which their citizens may struggle to obtain their basic supplies, as the COVID-19 crisis has recently shown. Therefore, solutions aiming to enhance local food, water and energy production systems, even in urban environments, have to be pursued. The COVID-19 crisis has also highlighted in the scientific community the problem of people's exposure to outdoor and indoor pollution, confirmed as a key element for the increase both in the transmission and severity of the contagion, on top of involving health risks on their own. In this context, most nations are going to adopt new preferential policies to stimulate the development of relevant sustainable energy industries, based on the electrification of the systems supplied by renewable energy sources as confirmed by the International Energy Agency (IEA). Thus, while there is ongoing research focusing on a COVID 19 vaccine, there is also a need for researchers to work cooperatively on novel strategies for world economic recovery incorporating renewable energy policy, technology and management. In this framework, the Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems (SDEWES) conference provides a good platform for researchers and other experts to exchange their academic thoughts, promoting the development and improvements on the renewable energy technologies as well as their role in systems and in the transition towards sustainable energy systems. The 14th SDEWES Conference was held in Dubrovnik, Croatia. It brought together around 570 researchers from 55 countries in the field of sustainable development. The present Special Issue of Energies, specifically dedicated to the 14th SDEWES Conference, focuses on four main fields: energy policy for sustainable development, biomass energy application, building energy saving, and power plant and electric systems. In the present paper, the heat transfer of gravity-driven dense particle flow around five different shapes of tubes is numerically studied using discrete element method (DEM). The velocity vector, particle contact number, particle contact time and heat transfer coefficient of particle flow at different particle zones around the tube are carefully analyzed. The results show that the effect of tube shape on the particle flow at both upstream and downstream regions of different tubes are remarkable. A particle stagnation zone and particle cavity zone are formed at the upstream and downstream regions of all the tubes. Both the stagnation and cavity zones for the circular tube are the largest, and they are the smallest for the elliptical tube. As the particle outlet velocity (vout) changes from 0.5 mm/s to 8 mm/s at dp = 1.72 mm/s, when compared with the circular tube, the heat transfer coefficient of particle flow for the elliptical tube and flat elliptical tube can increase by 20.3% and 15.0% on average, respectively. The proper design of the downstream shape of the tube can improve the overall heat transfer performance more efficiently. The heat transfer coefficient will increase as particle diameter decreases. Several countries have recently realized that the present development paradigm is not sustainable from an environmental and energy point of view. The growing awareness of the population regarding environmental issues is pushing governments worldwide more and more to promote policies aiming at limiting harmful effects of human development. In particular, the rapid increase of the global temperature, especially in the polar regions, and the management of human wastes, mainly plastic in seas, are some of the main points to be addressed by these novel policies. Several actions must be implemented in order to limit such issues. Unfortunately, the recent COP 24 Conference was not successful, but hopefully an agreement will be established in 2020 at the COP 26 Conference. The effort performed by policymakers must be mandatorily supported by the scientific community. In this framework, this paper aims at showing that countries worldwide are trying to negotiate an agreement to increase energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In addition, in this paper all the researchers reported can provide quantitative measures of the actions to be implemented in order to address a sustainable and efficient use of energy. Here, innovations in terms of novel efficient and environmentally friendly technologies mainly based on renewable energy sources have been also investigated. The study also highlights different sectors that have been involved for this aim, such as energy conversion systems, urban areas, mobility, sustainability, water management, social aspects, etc. In this framework, specific conferences are periodically organized in order to provide a forum for discussion regarding these topics. In this area the Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems (SDEWES) conference is the most ordinary conference. The 13th Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems Conference was held in Palermo, Italy in 2018. The current Special Issue of Energies, precisely dedicated to the 13th SDEWES Conference, is based on three main topics: energy policy and energy efficiency in urban areas, energy efficiency in industry and biomass and other miscellaneous energy systems. In the present paper, the effective thermal conductivities of Li4SiO4-packed beds with both ordered and random packing structures were investigated using thermal resistance network methods based on both an Ohm's law model and a Kirchhoff's law model. The calculation results were also validated and compared with the numerical and experimental results. Firstly, it is proved that the thermal resistance network method based on the Kirchhoff's law model proposed in the present study is reliable and accurate for prediction of effective thermal conductivities in a Li4SiO4-packed bed, while the results calculated with the Ohm's law model underestimate both ordered and random packings. Therefore, when establishing a thermal resistance network, the thermal resistances should be connected along the main heat transfer direction and other heat transfer directions as well in the packing unit. Otherwise, both the total heat flux and effective thermal conductivity in the packing unit will be underestimated. Secondly, it is found that the effect of the packing factor is remarkable. The effective thermal conductivity of a packed bed would increase as the packing factor increases. Compared with random packing at similar packing factor, the effective thermal conductivity of packed bed would be further improved with an ordered packing method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The most extensively used heat exchanger in numerous research fields and industrial processes is the shell and tube heat exchanger. The selection of the baffle plays a vital role to regulate and increase the thermohydraulic performance and also to decrease fluid-induced vibrations due to shell side flow. 3-D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and fluid-structure interaction (FSI) have been done to analyze the pressure drop, heat transfer coefficient, vortex shedding, and tube deformation due to induced vibrations among the recently developed clamping antivibration baffles with square twisted tubes, helical baffles with cylindrical tubes, and conventional segmental baffles with cylindrical tubes at different shell side flow rates by using commercial software ANSYS. Complete heat exchangers are modeled for numerical comparison; the thermohydraulic performance of the numerical model shows the suitable agreement by validating it with already published results and Esso method for single segmental baffles. It is then used to compare the performance of the same heat exchangers with CBSTT and HBCT. Thermohydraulic performance of CBSTT-STHX is better than SGCT-STHX. The heat transfer coefficient of heat exchangers with tube-to-baffle-hole clearance is higher and there is a reduction in the pressure drop compared to the results of STHXs without tube-to-baffle-hole clearance. The deformation in the tubes and vortex-induced vibrations are minimum in STHX with CBSTT than in STHXs with HBCT and SGCT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

EU energy policy is more and more promoting a resilient, efficient and sustainable energy system. Several agreements have been signed in the last few months that set ambitious goals in terms of energy efficiency and emission reductions and to reduce the energy consumption in buildings. These actions are expected to fulfill the goals negotiated at the Paris Agreement in 2015. The successful development of this ambitious energy policy needs to be supported by scientific knowledge: a huge effort must be made in order to develop more efficient energy conversion technologies based both on renewables and fossil fuels. Similarly, researchers are also expected to work on the integration of conventional and novel systems, also taking into account the needs for the management of the novel energy systems in terms of energy storage and devices management. Therefore, a multi-disciplinary approach is required in order to achieve these goals. To ensure that the scientists belonging to the different disciplines are aware of the scientific progress in the other research areas, specific Conferences are periodically organized. Longitudinal heat conduction has a significant effect on the heat transfer performance of plate heat exchangers, but longitudinal heat conduction is usually neglected in numerical studies and the thermal design of a heat exchanger. In this paper, heat transfer models with and without longitudinal heat conduction are proposed to analyze the effect of small-scale longitudinal heat conduction in a plate heat exchanger. The performance of small-scale longitudinal heat conduction is illustrated by temperature and heat flux contours in the heat transfer models with and without longitudinal heat conduction. The results show that small-scale longitudinal heat conduction occurs in the plate and a more uniform temperature profile of the plate is obtained due to small-scale longitudinal heat conduction. In balanced flow, the contributions of longitudinal heat conduction for counter-flow, cross-flow and parallel-flow plate heat exchangers are −3.15%, −0.09% and 0, respectively, whereas, for the respective unbalanced flows they are evaluated to be −1.73%, 0.53% and 0.05%, respectively. Moreover, it is observed that small-scale longitudinal heat conduction in plates is influenced by the thermal conductivity of the plate. The higher the thermal conductivity, the larger is the reduction of thermal performance. The contribution of longitudinal heat conduction varies from −0.54% to −4.01%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Packed beds are widely used in catalytic reactors or nuclear reactors. Reducing the pressure drop and improving the heat transfer performance of a packed bed is a common research aim. The dimpled structure has a complex influence on the flow and heat transfer characteristics. In the present study, the flow and heat transfer characteristics in structured packed beds with smooth or dimpled spheres are numerically investigated, where two different low channel to particle diameter ratios (N = 1.00 and N = 1.15) are considered. The pressure drop and the Nusselt number are obtained. The results show that, for N = 1.00, compared with the structured packed bed with smooth spheres, the structured packed bed with dimpled spheres has a lower pressure drop and little higher Nusselt number at 1500 < ReH < 14,000, exhibiting an improved overall heat transfer performance. However, for N = 1.15, the structured packed bed with dimpled spheres shows a much higher pressure drop, which dominantly affects the overall heat transfer performance, causing it to be weaker. Comparing the different channel to particle diameter ratios, we find that different configurations can result in: (i) completely different drag reduction effect; and (ii) relatively less influence on heat transfer enhancement. Experimental and numerical investigations of force analysis acted on single circular cylinder in the T pipe junction with the effect of vanes are reported in this paper. Experiments are carried on in a small wind tunnel at five different velocity ratios (R) from 0.117 to 0.614. The mean pressure data acted on the cylinder are obtained and in turn the drag and lift. Vanes are installed at the junction to change the secondary flow in the suction duct and the angle is in the range of 90° ≤ φ ≤ 130°. Numerical studies which are validated by the experimental data help understand the flow structure for the analysis. It is found that in the T shape junction without vanes, the cylinder presents different surface mean pressure distributions at the different positions in the suction duct. As the increase of the distance from the junction to the cylinder center, the surface mean pressure distributions recover to the benchmark gradually which performs in the straight duct beforehand. Four feature points including the front/rear stagnation points and the separation points and the corresponding three divisions of flow region are analyzed in detail with the auxiliary numerical simulation of flow structure. Effect of the vanes with different angle is also discussed. Finally, the drag and lift coefficients acted on the cylinder with or without vanes are performed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
