In order to stop and reverse land degradation and curb the loss of biodiversity, the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development proposes to combat desertification. In this paper, a fractional vegetation–water model in an arid flat environment is studied. The pattern behavior of the fractional model is much more complex than that of the integer order. We study the stability and Turing instability of the system, as well as the Hopf bifurcation of fractional order α , and obtain the Turing region in the parameter space. According to the amplitude equation, different types of stationary mode discoveries can be obtained, including point patterns and strip patterns. Finally, the results of the numerical simulation and theoretical analysis are consistent. We find some novel fractal patterns of the fractional vegetation–water model in an arid flat environment. When the diffusion coefficient, d, changes and other parameters remain unchanged, the pattern structure changes from stripes to spots. When the fractional order parameter, β , changes, and other parameters remain unchanged, the pattern structure becomes more stable and is not easy to destroy. The Klausmeier–Gray–Scott model of vegetation dynamics consists of a system of two partial differential equations relating plant growth and soil water. It is capable of reproducing the characteristic spatial patterns of vegetation found in plant ecosystems under water limitations. Recently, a discrete delay was incorporated into this model to account for the lag between water infiltration into the soil and the following water uptake by plants. In this work, we consider a more ecologically realistic distributed delay to relate plant growth and soil water availability and analyse the effects of different delay types on the dynamics of both mean-field and spatial Klausmeier–Gray–Scott models. We consider distributed delays based on Gamma kernels and use the so-called linear chain trick to analyse the stability of the uniformly vegetated equilibrium. It is shown that the presence of delays can lead to the loss of stability in the constant equilibrium and to a reduction of the parameter region where steady-state vegetation patterns can arise through symmetry-breaking by diffusion-driven instability. However, these effects depend on the type of delay, and they are absent for distributed delays with weak kernels when vegetation mortality is low. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vegetation in natural desert hinterland oases is an important component of terrestrial ecosystems. Determining how desert vegetation responds to natural variability is critical for a better understanding of desertification processes and their future development. The aim of this study is to characterize the spatial distribution of vegetation in the natural desert hinterland and to reveal how different environmental factors affect vegetation changes. Taking a Taklamakan Desert hinterland oasis as our research object, we analyzed the effects of different environmental factors on desert vegetation using a time-series normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) combined with meteorological, topographic, and hydrological data, including surface water and groundwater data. Vegetation was distributed in areas with high surface water frequency, shallow groundwater levels, relatively flat terrain, and dune basins. NDVI datasets show greening trends in oasis areas over the past 20 years. The frequency of surface water distribution influences water accessibility and effectiveness and shapes topography, thus affecting the spatial distribution pattern of vegetation. In this study, areas of high surface water frequency corresponded with vegetation distribution. The spatial distribution of groundwater depth supports the growth and development of vegetation, impacting the pattern of vegetation growth conditions. Vegetation is most widely distributed in areas where the groundwater burial depth is 3.5–4.5 m. Philaenus spumarius (Linnaeus 1758, hereafter Ps) is considered one of the main insect vectors responsible for the spread of an alien biota, Xylella fastidiosa (Wells 1987, hereafter Xf), in the Salento area, Apulia region (Southern Italy). Effective management of this biological invader depends on the continuous surveillance and monitoring of its insect vector. As such, this research elicits the invasion drivers (i.e., landscape and vegetation indicators) that influence the abundance and the dynamics of this vector and, consequently, the spatial spread of this bacterium in this Italian region. For this purpose, a spatial pattern clustering methodological approach is considered. The results reveal that spatial variation and territorial differentiation may differ from zone to zone in the same invaded area, for which effective management and monitoring planning should be addressed. Further, six agro-ecosystems zones have been identified with respect to five indicators: (i) vegetation index, (ii) intensity of cultivation, (iii) cultural diversity, (iv) density of agricultural landscape elements, and (v) altitude. This paper has public implications and contributes to an understanding of how zoning of an infected area, by an alien biota, into homogenous zones may impact its effective management costs. Floodplains have important ecological and hydrological functions in terrestrial ecosystems, experience severe soil erosion, and are vulnerable to losing soil fertility. Tamarix chinensis Lour. plantation is the main vegetation restoration measure for maintaining soil quality in floodplains. Soil microorganisms are essential for driving biogeochemical cycling processes. However, the effects of sampling location and shrub patch size on soil microbial community composition remain unclear. In this study, we characterized changes in microbial structure, as well as the factors driving them, in inside- and outside-canopy soils of three patch sizes (small, medium, large) of T. chinensis plants in the middle Yellow River floodplain. Compared with the outside-canopy soils, inside-canopy had higher microbial phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs), including fungi, bacteria, Gram-positive bacteria (GP), Gram-negative bacteria (GN), and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. The ratio of fungi to bacteria and GP to GN gradually decreased as shrub patch size increased. Differences between inside-canopy and outside-canopy soils in soil nutrients (organic matter, total nitrogen, and available phosphorus) and soil salt content increased by 59.73%, 40.75%, 34.41%, and 110.08% from small to large shrub patch size. Changes in microbial community composition were mainly driven by variation in soil organic matter, which accounted for 61.90% of the variation in inside-canopy soils. Resource islands could alter microbial community structure, and this effect was stronger when shrub patch size was large. The results indicated that T. chinensis plantations enhanced the soil nutrient contents (organic matter, total nitrogen, and available phosphorus) and elevated soil microbial biomass and changed microbial community composition; T. chinensis plantations might thus provide a suitable approach for restoring degraded floodplain ecosystems.

The Leaf Area Index (LAI) is one of the most frequently applied measures to characterize vegetation and its dynamics and functions with remote sensing. Satellite missions, such as NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) operationally produce global datasets of LAI. Due to their role as an input to large-scale modeling activities, evaluation and verification of such datasets are of high importance. In this context, savannas appear to be underrepresented with regards to their heterogeneous appearance (e.g., tree/grass-ratio, seasonality). Here, we aim to examine the LAI in a heterogeneous savanna ecosystem located in Namibia's Owamboland during the dry season. Ground measurements of LAI are used to derive a high-resolution LAI model with RapidEye satellite data. This model is related to the corresponding MODIS LAI/FPAR (Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation) scene (MOD15A2) in order to evaluate its performance at the intended annual minimum during the dry season. Based on a field survey we first assessed vegetation patterns from species composition and elevation for 109 sites. Secondly, we measured in situ LAI to quantitatively estimate the available vegetation (mean = 0.28). Green LAI samples were then empirically modeled (LAImodel) with high resolution RapidEye imagery derived Difference Vegetation Index (DVI) using a linear regression (R2 = 0.71). As indicated by several measures of model performance, the comparison with MOD15A2 revealed moderate consistency mostly due to overestimation by the aggregated LAImodel. Model constraints aside, this study may point to important issues for MOD15A2 in savannas concerning the underlying MODIS Land Cover product (MCD12Q1) and a potential adjustment by means of the MODIS Burned Area product (MCD45A1). The hydrologic process of the sandy desert remains a focus in research in arid areas. Three major natural phenomena that can indicate the hydrological cycle in the extremely dry Badain Jaran Desert were found, namely the assemblage of megadune microrelief and evaporite, megadune vegetation and microrelief, as well as lakeside runoff and vegetation. The microrelief sand layer water, evaporite minerals, and lakeside hydrogeological features were analyzed by the drying and weighing method, environmental scanning electron microscopy with energy spectrum analysis functions, and a hydrogeological borehole survey. The water content of the microrelief 0–0.5 m sand layer is between 4.7% and 9.3%. The evaporite minerals are mainly composed of calcite (CaCO3) and gypsum (CaSO4). The shallow groundwater system in the off-shore area of lakes consists of an aeolian sand layer, a peat layer, and a lacustrine sedimentary layer, and the phreatic water with a thickness of 20 cm to 40 cm is reserved in the bottom of aeolian sand layer with a peat layer as a waterproof baseboard. Based on these results, the above three natural phenomena can be explained as follows: (1) The assemblage of megadune microrelief and evaporite was caused by the outcropping of water from megadune vadose zone in the form of preferential flow for a long time. Its leading edge differential wind erosion and calcium cemented fine sand layer indicate that water from the megadune vadose zone moves to and recharges the microrelief water along the micro-scale fine sand layer, during which, it features a multiple layer as it is controlled by a vertical dune bedding structure. (2) The small-scale assemblage of megadune vegetation and microrelief indicates that the water from the megadune vadose zone moved laterally and led to vegetation development, and the assemblage of microrelief and vegetation at a slope scale indicates that the vadose zone water presented multilayer enrichment and runoff producing due, to a great extent, to the bedding structures of different spacial locations. (3) The assemblage of lakeside runoff and vegetation is related to the phreatic water recharged by precipitation surrounding the lake, which indicates that the megadune water recharged by precipitation moved to the bottom of the megadune and constituted supply to the lake water. The three assemblages fully demonstrate that the megadune water recharged by precipitation in this desert could recharge the groundwater water and even lake water in the form of preferential flow due to the control of the bedding structure of different scales within the megadune. The results of lake water balance and the occurrence conditions of phreatic water surrounding the lake imply that the precipitation in this desert plays an important role in sustaining the lake. This study provides reliable evidence for revealing the essence of the hydrological cycle and the source of lake water in the Badain Jaran Desert, which indicates that although precipitation is small, it cannot be ignored in arid sandy desert areas. The ecological rehabilitation of potential toxic metal-contaminated soils in sites disturbed by mining has been a great challenge in recent decades. Phytoremediation is one of the most widely promoted renovation methods due to its environmental friendliness and low cost. However, there is a lack of in situ investigation on the influence of vegetation pattern and spontaneous succession on the rehabilitation of potential toxic metal-polluted soil. To clarify how the vegetation pattern in the early stage of restoration and the spontaneous succession influence the remediation of the soil, we investigated a metal mining dump in Sichuan, China, by field investigation and laboratory analysis. We determined the plant growth, soil fertility, and the capacity of potential toxic metals (PTMs) in metal mining soil under different initial vegetation patterns for different years to understand the role of vegetation pattern and spontaneous succession in PTM pollution phytoremediation projects. The results show that: (1) Phytoremediation with a simple initial vegetation pattern (RP rehabilitative plant pattern) which involves two rehabilitation plants, Agave sisalana and Neyraudia reynaudiana, achieves a PTM pollution index that is 9.28% lower than that obtained with the complex vegetation pattern (RP&LP rehabilitation plants mixed with local plants pattern), 21.86% lower in the soil fertility index, and 73.69% lower in the biodiversity index; (2) The phytoremediation with the 10-year RP&LP pattern was associated with a PTM pollution index that was 4.04% higher than that for the 17-year RP&LP pattern, a soil fertility index that was 4.48% lower, and a biodiversity index that was 12.49% lower. During the process of vegetation succession, if accumulator plants face inhibition of growth or retreat, the reclamation rate will decrease. The vegetation patterns influence the effect of phytoremediation. Spontaneous vegetation succession will cause the phytoremediation process to deviate from the intended target. Therefore, according to the goal of vegetation restoration, choosing a suitable vegetation pattern is the main premise to ensure the effect of phytoremediation. The indispensable manipulation of succession is significant during the succession series, and more attention should be paid to the rehabilitative plants to ensure the stable effect of reclamation.
