This study verifies the practicality of using finite element analysis for strain and deformation analysis in regions with sparse GNSS stations. A digital 3D terrain model is constructed using DEM data, and regional rock mass properties are integrated to simulate geological structures, resulting in the development of a 3D geological finite element model (FEM) using the ANSYS Workbench module. Gravity load and thermal constraints are applied to derive directional strain and deformation solutions, and the model results are compared to actual strain and tilt measurements from the Jiujiang Seismic Station (JSS). The results show that temperature variations significantly affect strain and deformation, particularly due to the elevation difference between the mountain base and summit. Higher temperatures increase thermal strain, causing tensile effects, while lower temperatures reduce thermal strain, leading to compressive effects. Strain and deformation patterns are strongly influenced by geological structures, gravity, and topography, with valleys experiencing tensile strain and ridges undergoing compression. The deformation trend indicates a southwestward movement across the study area. A comparison of FEM results with ten years of strain and tiltmeter data from JSS reveals a strong correlation between the model predictions and actual measurements, with correlation coefficients of 0.6 and 0.75 for strain in the NS and EW directions, and 0.8 and 0.9 for deformation in the NS and EW directions, respectively. These findings confirm that the 3D geological FEM is applicable for regional strain and deformation analysis, providing a feasible alternative in areas with limited GNSS monitoring. This article addresses the important problem of tilt measurement and stabilization. This is particularly important in the case of drone stabilization and navigation in underwater environments, multibeam sonar mapping, aerial photogrammetry in densely urbanized areas, etc. The tilt measurement process involves the fusion of information from at least two different sensors. Inertial sensors (IMUs) are unique in this context because they are both autonomous and passive at the same time and are therefore very attractive. Their calibration and systematic errors or bias are known problems, briefly discussed in the article due to their importance, and are relatively simple to solve. However, problems related to the accumulation of these errors over time and their autonomous and dynamic correction remain. This article proposes a solution to the problem of IMU tilt calibration, i.e., the pitch and roll and the accelerometer bias correction in dynamic conditions, and presents the process of calculating these parameters based on combined accelerometer and gyroscope records using a new approach based on measuring increments or differences in tilt measurement. Verification was performed by simulation under typical conditions and for many different inertial units, i.e., IMU devices, which brings the proposed method closer to the real application context. Background: We sought to replicate our 2015 findings linking chemical intolerance in parents with the risk of their children developing autism and/or ADHD. Drawing upon our 2021 discovery of a strong association between chemical intolerance and mast cells, we propose an explanation for this link. Methods: In a population-based survey of U.S. adults, we used the internationally validated Quick Environmental Exposure and Sensitivity Inventory (QEESI) to assess symptom severity and chemical intolerance. Parents were asked how many of their biological children had been diagnosed with autism and/or ADHD. Results: Parents with chemical intolerance scores in the top versus bottom tenth percentile had 5.7 times the risk of reporting a child with autism and 2.1 times for ADHD. Conclusions: High chemical intolerance scores among parents of children with autism, coupled with our 2021 discovery of mast cell activation as a plausible biomechanism for chemical intolerance, suggest that (1) the QEESI can identify individuals at increased risk, (2) environmental counseling may reduce personal exposures and risk, and (3) the global rise in autism and ADHD may be due to fossil-fuel-derived and biogenic toxicants epigenetically "turning on" or "turning off" critical mast cell genes that can be transmitted transgenerationally. It is important to note that this study was observational in nature; as such, further research is needed using controlled trials to confirm causality and explore the proposed mechanism. The structural collapse of a street lighting pole represents an aspect that is often underestimated and unpredictable, but of relevant importance for the safety of people and things. These events are complex to evaluate since several sources of damage are involved. In addition, traditional inspection methods are ineffective, do not correctly quantify the residual life of poles, and are inefficient, requiring enormous costs associated with the vastness of elements to be investigated. An advantageous alternative is to adopt a distributed type of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) technique based on the Internet of Things (IoT). This paper proposes the design of a low-cost system, which is also easy to integrate in current infrastructures, for monitoring the structural behavior of street lighting poles in Smart Cities. At the same time, this device collects previous structural information and offers some secondary functionalities related to its application, such as meteorological information. Furthermore, this paper intends to lay the foundations for the development of a method that is able to avoid the collapse of the poles. Specifically, the implementation phase is described in the aspects concerning low-cost devices and sensors for data acquisition and transmission and the strategies of information technologies (ITs), such as Cloud/Edge approaches, for storing, processing and presenting the achieved measurements. Finally, an experimental evaluation of the metrological performance of the sensing features of this system is reported. The main results highlight that the employment of low-cost equipment and open-source software has a double implication. On one hand, they entail advantages such as limited costs and flexibility to accommodate the specific necessities of the interested user. On the other hand, the used sensors require an indispensable metrological evaluation of their performance due to encountered issues relating to calibration, reliability and uncertainty. Optoelectronic motion capture systems are considered the gold standard for measuring walking and running kinematics parameters. However, these systems prerequisites are not feasible for practitioners as they entail a laboratory environment and time to process and calculate the data. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the validity of the three-sensor RunScribe Sacral Gait Lab™ inertial measurement unit (IMU) in measuring pelvic kinematics in terms of vertical oscillation, tilt, obliquity, rotational range of motion, and the maximum angular rates during walking and running on a treadmill. Pelvic kinematic parameters were measured simultaneously using an eight-camera motion analysis system (Qualisys Medical AB, GÖTEBORG, Sweden) and the three-sensor RunScribe Sacral Gait Lab™ (Scribe Lab. Inc. San Francisco, CA, USA) in a sample of 16 healthy young adults. An acceptable level of agreement was considered if the following criteria were met: low bias and SEE (<0.2 times the between-subject differences SD), almost perfect (r > 0.90), and good reliability (ICC > 0.81). The results obtained reveal that the three-sensor RunScribe Sacral Gait Lab™ IMU did not reach the validity criteria established for any of the variables and velocities tested. We present the dipole cosmological principle, i.e., the notion that the Universe is a Copernican cosmology that agrees with the cosmic flow. It suits the most symmetric paradigm that generalizes the Friedmann–Lemaître–Robertson–Walker ansatz in the context of numerous suggestions that have appeared in the literature for non-kinematic components in the cosmic microwave background dipole. Field equations in our "dipole cosmology" are still ODEs, but we now have four instead of two Friedmann equations. The two extra functions can be regarded as additional scale factors that break the isotropy group from SO(3) to U(1) and a "tilt" that denotes the cosmic flow. The result is an axially isotropic Universe. We examined the dynamics of the expansion rate, anisotropic shear, and tilt in some cases. Holistic local visual homing based on warping of panoramic images relies on some simplifying assumptions about the images and the environment to make the problem more tractable. One of these assumptions is that images are captured on flat ground without tilt. While this might be true in some environments, it poses a problem for a wider real-world application of warping. An extension of the warping framework is proposed where tilt-corrected images are used as inputs. The method combines the tilt correction of panoramic images with a systematic search through hypothetical tilt parameters, using an image distance measure produced by warping as the optimization criterion. This method not only improves the homing performance of warping on tilted images, but also allows for a good estimation of the tilt without requiring additional sensors or external image alignment. Experiments on two newly collected tilted panoramic image databases confirm the improved homing performance and the viability of the proposed tilt-estimation scheme. Approximations of the tilt-correction image transformations and multiple direct search strategies for the tilt estimation are evaluated with respect to their runtime vs. estimation quality trade-offs to find a variant of the proposed methods which best fulfills the requirements of practical applications. One of the strategies to detect the precursors of an eruption is to define the background dynamical state of a volcano for a prompt recognition of deviations from the basic condition. Mt. Vesuvius (Italy), currently in a quiescent state, is one of the most monitored volcanoes in the world, inciting multidisciplinary advanced studies. Hence an understanding of the links among the different monitored parameters is mandatory. In recent decades the joint analyses of ground tilt and seismicity have added to the understanding of the volcano's activity. In this paper, we outline the first steps towards a comprehension of the link between Mt. Vesuvius earthquakes and co-seismic ground tilt, after excluding the contribution of other external forces acting on the ground, such as tides, landslides or exceptional meteorological phenomena. We used the seismicity with a duration magnitude ≥ 2.0 recorded at Mt. Vesuvius in the period 2018–2020 to estimate the source parameters and to calculate the associated static displacement. Then, we compared the ground inclination retrieved from the estimated seismic deformation with the long-term ground motion trend measured by tiltmeters. Featured Application: This paper demonstrates that the behavior of the horizontal component of seismic wind noise with depth is much more complex than previously published. This fact will motivate increased use of the horizontal component in seismic wind noise studies and should lead to better determination of ground properties using inversion of measured seismic wind noise. In a literature search on the coupling of wind-generated pressure fluctuations into seismic noise, it was noticed that the expression for the angular tilt induced by pressure fluctuations in the seminal paper "A preliminary investigation into the relationship between long-period seismic noise and local fluctuations in the atmospheric pressure" by G. G. Sorrells was only valid at the surface. A search of the literature which cites the Sorrells paper was performed to see if any subsequent research corrected this error, and what effect the error might have on the research. A recent paper by Tanimoto and Wang notes the correct expression for the tilt, but employs the simpler erroneous expression in the research. In this paper, we develop the correct expression for effective measured displacements and approximate expressions analogous to those of Sorrells. The resulting magnitudes and decay with depth are then displayed and compared to Sorrells. Next, the results of the literature search are discussed. The results of three papers are identified as potentially modified by the correction of the tilt calculation. Finally, it is noted that the majority of the papers referenced are not affected by the correction, since many of the papers are for near-surface displacements of very low frequencies. We propose a multi-temporal-scale analysis of ground deformation data using both high-rate tilt and GNSS measurements and the DInSAR and daily GNSS solutions in order to investigate a sequence of four paroxysmal episodes of the Voragine crater occurring in December 2015 at Mt. Etna (Italy). The analysis aimed at inferring the magma sources feeding a sequence of very violent eruptions, in order to understand the dynamics and to image the shallow feeding system of the volcano that enabled such a rapid magma accumulation and discharge. The high-rate data allowed us to constrain the sources responsible for the fast and violent dynamics of each paroxysm, while the cumulated deformation measured by DInSAR and daily GNSS solutions, over a period of 12 days encompassing the entire eruptive sequence, also showed the deeper part of the source involved in the considered period, where magma was stored. We defined the dynamics and rates of the magma transfer, with a middle-depth storage of gas-rich magma that charges, more or less continuously, a shallower level where magma stops temporarily, accumulating pressure due to the gas exsolution. In this paper we propose an approach for the estimation of the slope of the walking surface during normal walking using a body-worn sensor composed of a biaxial accelerometer and a uniaxial gyroscope attached to the shank. It builds upon a state of the art technique that was successfully used to estimate the walking velocity from walking stride data, but did not work when used to estimate the slope of the walking surface. As claimed by the authors, the reason was that it did not take into account the actual inclination of the shank of the stance leg at the beginning of the stride (mid stance). In this paper, inspired by the biomechanical characteristics of human walking, we propose to solve this issue by using the accelerometer as a tilt sensor, assuming that at mid stance it is only measuring the gravity acceleration. Results from a set of experiments involving several users walking at different inclinations on a treadmill confirm the feasibility of our approach. A statistical analysis of slope estimations shows in first instance that the technique is capable of distinguishing the different slopes of the walking surface for every subject. It reports a global RMS error (per-unit difference between actual and estimated inclination of the walking surface for each stride identified in the experiments) of 0.05 and this can be reduced to 0.03 with subject-specific calibration and post processing procedures by means of averaging techniques. The main errors of MEMS accelerometers are misalignments of their sensitivity axes, thermal and long-term drifts, imprecise factory calibration, and aging phenomena. In order to reduce these errors, a two-axial tilt sensor comprising a triaxial MEMS accelerometer, an aligning unit, and solid cubic housing was built. By means of the aligning unit it was possible to align the orientation of the accelerometer sensitive axes with respect to the housing with an accuracy of 0.03°. Owing to the housing, the sensor could be easily and quickly recalibrated, and thus errors such as thermal and long-term drifts as well as effects of aging were eliminated. Moreover, errors due to local and temporal variations of the gravitational acceleration can be compensated for. Procedures for calibrating and aligning the accelerometer are described. Values of thermal and long-term drifts of the tested sensor, resulting in tilt errors of even 0.4°, are presented. Application of the sensor for monitoring elevated loads is discussed. Transmission towers are easily affected by various meteorological and geological disasters. In this paper, a transmission tower tilt state assessment approach—based on high precision and dense point cloud from UAV LiDAR—was proposed. First, the transmission tower point cloud was rapidly located and extracted from the 3D point cloud obtained by UAV-LiDAR line patrol. A robust histogram local extremum extraction method with additional constraints was proposed to achieve adaptive segmentation of the tower head and tower body point cloud. Second, an accurate and efficient extraction and simplification strategy of the contour of the feature plane point cloud was proposed. The central axis of the tower was constrained by the contour of the feature plane through the four-prism structure to calculate the tilt angle of the tower and evaluate the state of the tower. Finally, the point cloud of tower head from UAV-based LiDAR was accurately matched with the designed tower head model from database, and a tower head state evaluation model based on matching offset parameters was proposed to evaluate tower head tilt state. The experimental results of simulation and measured data showed that the calculation accuracy of the tilt parameters of transmission tower body was better than 0.5 degrees, that the proposed method can effectively evaluate the risk of tower head with complex structure, and improve the rapid and mass intelligent perception level of the risk state of the transmission line tower, which has a wide prospects for application. The aim of this work was to study the variation in the total ozone column amount (TOC) during the life cycle of the tropical cyclone (TC) that occurred over the northwest Indian Ocean from 14 to 25 October 2008. This goal was achieved through examining the behavior of the tropical cyclone tilt under vertically varying background flows in association with the cyclone development. Thus, the vertical wind shear (VWS) was estimated as one of the most important dynamical parameters related to TC formation and intensity changes. Moreover, we estimated the variations in the daily values of TOC during the period of cyclone activity. We found that the magnitude of VWS increased during the growth period, and VWS weakened during the decay period. Anomalies of daily TOC were found to reduce steadily before and during the cyclone formation, followed by an increasing trend after the dissipation of cyclone. It was also found that during the development of the tropical cyclone, an outflow developed in the upper levels, having high velocities that extended beyond the tropopause up to the lower stratosphere. As a result, the lowest value of TOC during the tropical cyclone was due to a large amount of injected water vapor from the troposphere into the stratosphere through the convection processes. This was mostly photo-dissociated into OH and atomic O by deep solar radiation in the upper and lower stratosphere, leading to a severe reduction in stratospheric ozone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To quantify the effect of levelling the corneal surface around the optical axis on the calculated values of corneal asphericity when conic and biconic models are used to fit the anterior corneal surface. Methods: This cross-sectional study starts with a mathematical simulation proving the concept of the effect that the eye's tilt has on the corneal asphericity calculation. Spherical, conic and biconic models are considered and compared. Further, corneal asphericity is analysed in the eyes of 177 healthy participants aged 35.4 ± 15.2. The optical axis was determined using an optimization procedure via the Levenberg–Marquardt nonlinear least-squares algorithm, before fitting the corneal surface to spherical, conic and biconic models. The influence of pupil size (aperture radii of 1.5, 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 mm) on corneal radius and asphericity was also analysed. Results: In computer simulations, eye tilt caused an increase in the apical radii of the surface with the increase of the tilt angle in both positive and negative directions and aperture radii in all models. Fitting the cornea to spherical models did not show a significant difference between the raw-measured corneal surfaces and the levelled surfaces for right and left eyes. When the conic models were fitted to the cornea, changes in the radii of the cornea among the raw-measured corneal surfaces' data and levelled data were not significant; however, significant differences were recorded in the asphericity of the anterior surfaces at radii of aperture 1.5 mm (p < 0.01). With the biconic model, the posterior surfaces recorded significant asphericity differences at aperture radii of 1.5 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm and 5 mm (p = 0.01, p < 0.01, p < 0.01 & p < 0.01, respectively) in the nasal temporal direction of right eyes and left eyes (p < 0.01, p < 0.01, p < 0.01 & p < 0.01, respectively). In the superior–inferior direction, significant changes were only noticed at aperture radii of 1.5 mm for both right and left eyes (p = 0.05, p < 0.01). Conclusions: Estimation of human corneal asphericity from topography or tomography data using conic and biconic models of corneas are affected by eyes' natural tilt. In contrast, the apical radii of the cornea are less affected. Using corneal asphericity in certain applications such as fitting contact lenses, corneal implant design, planning for refractive surgery and mathematical modelling when a geometrical centre of the eye is needed should be implemented with caution. We study how surface distortions of liquid samples due to a meniscus and a tilt of a semi-open coaxial test cell affect errors in a broadband permittivity determination. The study is based on the scattering parameters, obtained using the electromagnetic simulations of samples with flat and distorted surfaces in a broad frequency range up to 18 GHz. The parameters are processed with the classic Nicolson–Ross–Weir (NRW) method and our new meniscus removal technique. We analyze the errors for several samples of different properties, such as distilled water and propan-2-ol. The results show that the meniscus removal technique is more robust and provides smaller errors in the permittivity determination compared to the classic NRW method. This work proposes a new wave-period estimation (L-dB) method based on the power-spectral-density (PSD) estimation of pitch and roll motional time series of a Doppler wind lidar buoy under the assumption of small angles (±22 deg) and slow yaw drifts (1 min), and the neglection of translational motion. We revisit the buoy's simplified two-degrees-of-freedom (2-DoF) motional model and formulate the PSD associated with the eigenaxis tilt of the lidar buoy, which was modelled as a complex-number random process. From this, we present the L-dB method, which estimates the wave period as the average wavelength associated to the cutoff frequency span at which the spectral components drop off L decibels from the peak level. In the framework of the IJmuiden campaign (North Sea, 29 March–17 June 2015), the L-dB method is compared in reference to most common oceanographic wave-period estimation methods by using a TriaxysTM buoy. Parametric analysis showed good agreement (correlation coefficient, ρ = 0.86, root-mean-square error (RMSE) = 0.46 s, and mean difference, MD = 0.02 s) between the proposed L-dB method and the oceanographic zero-crossing method when the threshold L was set at 8 dB. Crosslevel is defined as the difference in elevation between the top surface of two railroad tracks. Severe changes in crosslevel, for example, due to earthquakes, ground settlement, or crushed ballasts, affect track geometry and can cause train derailment. Therefore, the objective of this study was to monitoring railroad crosslevel by using electrical time domain reflectometry (ETDR) to simultaneously interrogate multiple capacitive tilt sensor prototypes connected in a transmission line. ETDR works by propagating an electrical pulse signal from one end of the transmission line and then monitoring the characteristics of each reflected pulse, which is affected by the capacitance (or tilt) of the sensors. This study begins with a discussion of the capacitive tilt sensor's design. These 3D-printed sensors were tested to characterize their tilt sensing performance. Then, multiple tilt sensors were connected in a transmission line and interrogated by ETDR. Representing the velocity at a tidal energy extraction site in a standardized manner is essential for the development of the tidal energy sector. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) have issued a technical specification to determine the mean representative current velocity (MRV) relative to a tidal energy converter (TEC). This method determines the MRV using an acoustic Doppler profiler (ADP). This is used to evaluate the power performance of a TEC and so can have a significant influence on the power performance uncertainties, due to the cubed relationship of the MRV and power. This paper investigates these uncertainties in the MRV by considering four sources of uncertainty in the ADP. These are turbulence intensity, tilt, Doppler noise and beam misalignment of an ADP. A synthetically generated dataset is used to define current velocity and profile using the characteristics of currents and ADP. The generated synthetic dataset is processed to calculate the MRV based on the standard IEC method. An alternative method to calculate the MRV, called the temporal-spatial method (TSM), is proposed and the two methodologies are used to assess the error of the MRV. A sensitivity analysis shows that the errors of the MRV based on the standard IEC method are always higher than the TSM. The biases in the MRV based on the different combinations of the uncertainty are investigated and it is found that the bias for the MRVs based on the TSM method is generally less than that of the IEC method. Online poker is a form of gambling where an element of skill may influence the outcome of the game. 'Tilt' in poker describes an episode during which the player can no longer control their game by rational decisions. It leads to a loss of control over the game, a loss of emotional regulation, higher cognitive distortion, and a loss of money. This phenomenon, experienced by most players, could be the gateway to excessive gambling. The aim of this study was to assess the links between the frequency of tilt episodes, cognitive distortion, anxiety, depression, sensation seeking and excessive online poker gambling. Our sample is composed of 291 online poker players, with a mean age of 33.8 years (SD = 10.6). Participants completed an online self-assessment questionnaire, measuring the frequency of tilt episodes, cognitive distortion, anxiety, depression and impulsivity. The findings indicated that the frequency of tilt episodes and cognitive distortion were the only significant predictors of excessive online gambling (respectively, r = 0.49 and r = 0.20). Tilt frequency and cognitive distortion were strongly correlated (GRCS, r = 0.60), moderate to low correlations were found for tilt and anxiety (HADS, r = 0.40), and positive and negative urgency (UPPS, r = 0.27). To date, tilt has seldom been studied, and could improve our understanding of online poker gamblers. It could be a new means of identifying at risk gamblers, and thus facilitating preventive measures specifically adapted to this population.

In this work, a low-cost, open-source and replicable system prototype for thermal analysis of low-cost Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensors in tilt measurement perspective is presented and tested. The system is formed of a 3D printed frame, a thermal cell consisting in a Peltier element mounted over a heat sink, and a control and power system. The frame is designed to allow the independent biaxial tilting of the thermal cell through two servomotors. The control board is formed by an Arduino® and a self-made board including a power drive for controlling the thermal unit and servomotors. We tested the chamber analyzing the behavior of multiple MEMS IMU onboard accelerometers suitable for measuring tilt. Our results underline the variability of the thermal behavior of the sensors, also for different sensor boards of the same model, and consequently the need for the adoption of a thermal compensation strategy based on thermal analysis results. These data suggesting the need for the analysis of the thermal behavior of MEMS-based sensors, indicate the potential of our system in making low-cost sensors suitable in medium-to-high precision monitoring applications. A modern horizontal axis wind turbine was simulated by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The analyzed machine has a diameter of 100 m and is immersed in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). The velocity and turbulence stratification of the ABL is correctly preserved along the domain by the adoption of modified wall functions. An overset technique is employed to handle the rotation of the turbine rotor throughout the operation of the machine. The ABL induces periodically oscillating loads and generated torque on the rotor blades. Several configurations are analyzed. First, the results of a rotor-only simulation are compared to the ones obtained from the simulation of the full machine in order to evaluate the effect of the supporting structures on the produced torque and on the loads acting on the blades. Then, a tilt angle is introduced on the analyzed rotor and its effect on the oscillating loads of each blade is highlighted by comparing the results to the untilted configuration. Beekeepers providing pollination services for California almond orchards have reported observing dead or malformed brood during and immediately after almond bloom—effects that they attribute to pesticide exposure. The objective of this study was to test commonly used insecticides and fungicides during almond bloom on honey bee larval development in a laboratory bioassay. In vitro rearing of worker honey bee larvae was performed to test the effect of three insecticides (chlorantraniliprole, diflubenzuron, and methoxyfenozide) and three fungicides (propiconazole, iprodione, and a mixture of boscalid-pyraclostrobin), applied alone or in insecticide-fungicide combinations, on larval development. Young worker larvae were fed diets contaminated with active ingredients at concentration ratios simulating a tank-mix at the maximum label rate. Overall, larvae receiving insecticide and insecticide-fungicide combinations were less likely to survive to adulthood when compared to the control or fungicide-only treatments. The insecticide chlorantraniliprole increased larval mortality when combined with the fungicides propiconazole or iprodione, but not alone; the chlorantraniliprole-propiconazole combination was also found to be highly toxic to adult workers treated topically. Diflubenzuron generally increased larval mortality, but no synergistic effect was observed when combined with fungicides. Neither methoxyfenozide nor any methoxyfenozide-fungicide combination increased mortality. Exposure to insecticides applied during almond bloom has the potential to harm honey bees and this effect may, in certain instances, be more damaging when insecticides are applied in combination with fungicides. In this paper we propose an approach for the estimation of the slope of the walking surface during normal walking using a body-worn sensor composed of a biaxial accelerometer and a uniaxial gyroscope attached to the shank. It builds upon a state of the art technique that was successfully used to estimate the walking velocity from walking stride data, but did not work when used to estimate the slope of the walking surface. As claimed by the authors, the reason was that it did not take into account the actual inclination of the shank of the stance leg at the beginning of the stride (mid stance). In this paper, inspired by the biomechanical characteristics of human walking, we propose to solve this issue by using the accelerometer as a tilt sensor, assuming that at mid stance it is only measuring the gravity acceleration. Results from a set of experiments involving several users walking at different inclinations on a treadmill confirm the feasibility of our approach. A statistical analysis of slope estimations shows in first instance that the technique is capable of distinguishing the different slopes of the walking surface for every subject. It reports a global RMS error (per-unit difference between actual and estimated inclination of the walking surface for each stride identified in the experiments) of 0.05 and this can be reduced to 0.03 with subject-specific calibration and post processing procedures by means of averaging techniques.
