In recent decades, the main commercial crops of Mato Grosso, such as soybeans, corn, and cotton, have been undergoing transformations regarding the adoption of new technologies to increase production. However, regardless of the technological level, the climate of the region, including the rainfall regime, can influence the success of crops and facilitate, or not, the maximum production efficiency. This study aimed to define the behavior of the variability in monthly and annual rainfall and its probability of monthly occurrence and calculate the drought index for the northwestern region of Mato Grosso, in the southern region of the Brazilian Amazon. To carry out the study, daily rainfall records were collected, calculating the totals for each month of the historical series for each of the four National Water and Sanitation Agency (ANA) rain gauge stations, Aripuanã (1985–2020), Colniza (2001–2020), Cotriguaçu (2004–2020), and Juína (1985–2020), representing the northwestern region. The annual distribution of rainfall during the periods studied ranged from 1376.2 to 3017.3 mm. The monthly distribution indicated a typical water shortage in the months of June, July, and August. The probability of rainfall near the average for each month was more than 50%. The monthly SPI-1 index revealed a total of 56 months affected by very dry events and 34 extreme dry events. The annual SPI-12 index pointed to seven very dry years and five extremely dry years. Therefore, the region presented high rainfall rates in most years; however, a significant process of drought was also observed, including in rainy months, which are the periods with the greatest demand for the main agricultural crops. Making plant breeding programs less expensive, fast, practical, and accurate, especially for soybeans, promotes the selection of new soybean genotypes and contributes to the emergence of new varieties that are more efficient in absorbing and metabolizing nutrients. Using spectral information from soybean genotypes combined with nutritional information on secondary macronutrients can help genetic improvement programs select populations that are efficient in absorbing and metabolizing these nutrients. In addition, using machine learning algorithms to process this information makes the acquisition of superior genotypes more accurate. Therefore, the objective of the work was to verify the classification performance of soybean genotypes regarding secondary macronutrients by ML algorithms and different inputs. The experiment was conducted in the experimental area of the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul, municipality of Chapadão do Sul, Brazil. Soybean was sown in the 2019/20 crop season, with the planting of 103 F2 soybean populations. The experimental design used was randomized blocks, with two replications. At 60 days after crop emergence (DAE), spectral images were collected with a Sensifly eBee RTK fixed-wing remotely piloted aircraft (RPA), with autonomous takeoff control, flight plan, and landing. At the reproductive stage (R1), three leaves were collected per plant to determine the macronutrients calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and sulfur (S) levels. The data obtained from the spectral information and the nutritional values of the genotypes in relation to Ca, Mg, and S were subjected to a Pearson correlation analysis; a PC analysis was carried out with a k-means algorithm to divide the genotypes into clusters. The clusters were taken as output variables, while the spectral data were used as input variables for the classification models in the machine learning analyses. The configurations tested in the models were spectral bands (SBs), vegetation indices (VIs), and a combination of both. The combination of machine learning algorithms with spectral data can provide important biological information about soybean plants. The classification of soybean genotypes according to calcium, magnesium, and sulfur content can maximize time, effort, and labor in field evaluations in genetic improvement programs. Mato Grosso state is the biggest maize producer in Brazil, with the predominance of cultivation concentrated in the second harvest. Due to the need to obtain more accurate and efficient data, agricultural intelligence is adapting and embracing new technologies such as the use of satellites for remote sensing and geographic information systems. In this respect, this study aimed to map the second harvest maize cultivation areas at Canarana-MT in the crop year 2019/2020 by using geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) with different spatial, spectral, and temporal resolutions. MSI/Sentinel-2, OLI/Landsat-8, MODIS-Terra and MODIS-Aqua, and PlanetScope imagery were used in this assessment. The maize crops mapping was based on cartographic basis from IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) and the Google Earth Engine (GEE), and the following steps of image filtering (gray-level co-occurrence matrix—GLCM), vegetation indices calculation, segmentation by simple non-iterative clustering (SNIC), principal component (PC) analysis, and classification by random forest (RF) algorithm, followed finally by confusion matrix analysis, kappa, overall accuracy (OA), and validation statistics. From these methods, satisfactory results were found; with OA from 86.41% to 88.65% and kappa from 81.26% and 84.61% among the imagery systems considered, the GEOBIA technique combined with the SNIC and GLCM spectral and texture feature discriminations and the RF classifier presented a mapping of the corn crop of the study area that demonstrates an improved and aided the performance of automated multispectral image classification processes. Plants respond to biotic and abiotic pressures by changing their biophysical and biochemical aspects, such as reducing their biomass and developing chlorosis, which can be readily identified using remote-sensing techniques applied to the VIS/NIR/SWIR spectrum range. In the current scenario of agriculture, production efficiency is fundamental for farmers, but diseases such as target spot continue to harm soybean yield. Remote sensing, especially hyperspectral sensing, can detect these diseases, but has disadvantages such as cost and complexity, thus favoring the use of UAVs in these activities, as they are more economical. The objectives of this study were: (i) to identify the most appropriate input variable (bands, vegetation indices and all reflectance ranges) for the metrics assessed in machine learning models; (ii) to verify whether there is a statistical difference in the response of NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index), grain weight and yield when subjected to different levels of severity; and (iii) to identify whether there is a relationship between the spectral bands and vegetation indices with the levels of target spot severity, grain weight and yield. The field experiment was carried out in the 2022/23 crop season and involved different fungicide treatments to obtain different levels of disease severity. A spectroradiometer and UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) imagery were used to collect spectral data from the leaves. Data were subjected to machine learning analysis using different algorithms. LR (logistic regression) and SVM (support vector machine) algorithms performed better in classifying target spot severity levels when spectral data were used. Multivariate canonical analysis showed that healthy leaves stood out at specific wavelengths, while diseased leaves showed different spectral patterns. Disease detection using hyperspectral sensors enabled detailed information acquisition. Our findings reveal that remote sensing, especially using hyperspectral sensors and machine learning techniques, can be effective in the early detection and monitoring of target spot in the soybean crop, enabling fast decision-making for the control and prevention of yield losses. Using multispectral sensors attached to unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can assist in the collection of morphological and physiological information from several crops. This approach, also known as high-throughput phenotyping, combined with data processing by machine learning (ML) algorithms, can provide fast, accurate, and large-scale discrimination of genotypes in the field, which is crucial for improving the efficiency of breeding programs. Despite their importance, studies aimed at accurately classifying sorghum hybrids using spectral variables as input sets in ML models are still scarce in the literature. Against this backdrop, this study aimed: (I) to discriminate sorghum hybrids based on canopy reflectance in different spectral bands (SB) and vegetation indices (VIs); (II) to evaluate the performance of ML algorithms in classifying sorghum hybrids; (III) to evaluate the best dataset input for the algorithms. A field experiment was carried out in the 2022 crop season in a randomized block design with three replications and six sorghum hybrids. At 60 days after crop emergence, a flight was carried out over the experimental area using the Sensefly eBee real time kinematic. The spectral bands (SB) acquired by the sensor were: blue (475 nm, B_475), green (550 nm, G_550), red (660 nm, R_660), Rededge (735 nm, RE_735) e NIR (790 nm, NIR_790). From the SB acquired, vegetation indices (VIs) were calculated. Data were submitted to ML classification analysis, in which three input settings (using only SB, using only VIs, and using SB + VIs) and six algorithms were tested: artificial neural networks (ANN), support vector machine (SVM), J48 decision trees (J48), random forest (RF), REPTree (DT) and logistic regression (LR, conventional technique used as a control). There were differences in the spectral signature of each sorghum hybrid, which made it possible to differentiate them using SBs and VIs. The ANN algorithm performed best for the three accuracy metrics tested, regardless of the input used. In this case, the use of SB is feasible due to the speed and practicality of analyzing the data, as it does not require calculations to perform the VIs. RF showed better accuracy when VIs were used as an input. The use of VIs provided the best performance for all the algorithms, as did the use of SB + VIs which provided good performance for all the algorithms except RF. Using ML algorithms provides accurate identification of the hybrids, in which ANNs using only SB and RF using VIs as inputs stand out (above 55 for CC, above 0.4 for kappa and around 0.6 for F-score). There were differences in the spectral signature of each sorghum hybrid, which makes it possible to differentiate them using wavelengths and vegetation indices. Processing the multispectral data using machine learning techniques made it possible to accurately differentiate the hybrids, with emphasis on artificial neural networks using spectral bands as inputs and random forest using vegetation indices as inputs. The identification of tree species is very useful for the management and monitoring of forest resources. When paired with machine learning (ML) algorithms, species identification based on spectral bands from a hyperspectral sensor can contribute to developing technologies that enable accurate forest inventories to be completed efficiently, reducing labor and time. This is the first study to evaluate the effectiveness of classification of five eucalyptus species (E. camaldulensis, Corymbia citriodora, E. saligna, E. grandis, and E. urophyla) using hyperspectral images and machine learning. Spectral readings were taken from 200 leaves of each species and divided into three dataset sizes: one set containing 50 samples per species, a second with 100 samples per species, and a third set with 200 samples per species. The ML algorithms tested were multilayer perceptron artificial neural network (ANN), decision trees (J48 and REPTree algorithms), and random forest (RF). As a control, a conventional approach by logistic regression (LR) was used. Eucalyptus species were classified by ML algorithms using a randomized stratified cross-validation with 10 folds. After obtaining the percentage of correct classification (CC) and F-measure accuracy metrics, the means were grouped by the Scott–Knott test at 5% probability. Our findings revealed the existence of distinct spectral curves between the species, with the differences being more marked from the 700 nm range onwards. The most accurate ML algorithm for identifying eucalyptus species was ANN. There was no statistical difference for CC between the three dataset sizes. Therefore, it was determined that 50 leaves would be sufficient to accurately differentiate the eucalyptus species evaluated. Our study represents an important scientific advance for forest inventories and breeding programs with applications in both forest plantations and native forest areas as it proposes a fast, accurate, and large-scale species-level classification approach. In recent years, agricultural remote sensing technology has made great progress. The availability of sensors capable of detecting electromagnetic energy and/or heat emitted by targets improves the pre-harvest process and therefore becomes an indispensable tool in the post-harvest phase. Therefore, we outline how remote sensing tools can support a range of agricultural processes from field to storage through crop yield estimation, grain quality monitoring, storage unit identification and characterization, and production process planning. The use of sensors in the field and post-harvest processes allows for accurate real-time monitoring of operations and grain quality, enabling decision-making supported by computer tools such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence algorithms. Currently, Brazil is the largest producer and exporter of soybeans in the world. Most of this cultivation is concentrated in the Cerrado region, which has soils with low boron levels. Boron performs functions that are directly linked to plant performance. The objective of this study was to evaluate the agronomic performance of soybean cultivars with and without boron fertilization. Two field experiments were carried out in the agricultural years 2018/2019 and 2019/2020. Each experiment was carried out in a randomized block design with four replications and 10 soybean cultivars (Desafio, Foco, Bonus, Maracaí, 7067, 7110, 7739, 8372, 7100, and Population). Boron fertilization was carried out at the V3 stage of the crop using ulexite (10% of boron) at a rate of 3194 kg ha−1 and 0.0 kg ha−1 of B. The application of boron to the soil increased plant height, pod insertion height, number of branches, main stem diameter, and number of pods per plant, in addition to increasing the cycle of these cultivars. The cultivars 7110, 7739 and Desafio did not statistically differ in terms of grain yield in response to boron fertilization. The cultivars Foco, Bonus, Maracaí, 7067, 8372, 7100, and Population responded favorably to this fertilization. Furthermore, genetic breeding programs incorporate advanced strategies, such as the use of boron fertilization, in order to improve the performance of the selected genotypes. Implementing boron fertilization as an integral part of breeding programs helps not only to achieve high-yielding cultivars but also to optimize key agronomic traits. Assessing different levels of red gum lerp psyllid (Glycaspis brimblecombei) can influence the hyperspectral reflectance of leaves in different ways due to changes in chlorophyll. In order to classify these levels, the use of machine learning (ML) algorithms can help process the data faster and more accurately. The objectives were: (I) to evaluate the spectral behavior of the G. brimblecombei attack levels; (II) find the most accurate ML algorithm for classifying pest attack levels; (III) find the input configuration that improves performance of the algorithms. Data were collected from a clonal eucalyptus plantation (clone AEC 0144—Eucalyptus urophilla) aged 10.3 months old. Eighty sample evaluations were carried out considering the following severity levels: control (no shells), low infestation (N1), intermediate infestation (N2), and high infestation (N3), for which leaf spectral reflectances were obtained using a spectroradiometer. The spectral range acquired by the equipment was 350 to 2500 nm. After obtaining the wavelengths, they were grouped into representative interval means in 28 bands. Data were submitted to the following ML algorithms: artificial neural networks (ANN), REPTree (DT) and J48 decision trees, random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), and conventional logistic regression (LR) analysis. Two input configurations were tested: using only the wavelengths (ALL) and using the spectral bands (SB) to classify the attack levels. The output variable was the severity of G. brimblecombei attack. There were differences in the hyperspectral behavior of the leaves for the different attack levels. The highest attack level shows the greatest distinction and the highest reflectance values. LR and SVM show better accuracy in classifying the severity levels of G. brimblecombei attack. For the correct classification percentage, the RL and SVM algorithms performed better, both with accuracy above 90%. Both algorithms achieved F-score values close to 0.90 and above 0.8 for Kappa. Knowing nutrient allocation dynamics in the tissues and the characteristics related to growth in different forest species is crucial to fertilization management and selecting better species for specific environments, ensuring greater fertilization efficiency and consequent sustainability in the forestry sector through the rational use of fertilizers. The objectives of this study were (i) to evaluate the content of macro- and micronutrients in different tissues of eucalyptus species and (ii) to relate them with their growth. The treatments were composed of six eucalyptus species (Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh., Corymbia citriodora Hook., E. saligna Sm., E. grandis W. Hill ex Maiden, E. urograndis, and E. urophylla S. T. Blake). Macro- (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and sulfur) and micronutrient (boron, copper, iron, manganese, and zinc) contents were determined in the leaves, bark, and sapwood. To study the functional patterns in macro- and micronutrient contents, Canonical Variable Analysis (CVA) was performed. The first two canonical variables in nutrient content of leaves, bark, and sapwood and the growth variables of eucalyptus species accumulated values greater than 80% of variance. The species E. grandis and E. urograndis showed the highest means for volume and total height but showed no differences regarding the concentration of major elements in the tissues, except the iron content in the bark, which was higher compared to other species. CVA proved to be an excellent tool for understanding, identifying, and classifying the strategies of Eucalyptus sp. regarding the content of nutrients in the shoot biomass tissues and may support genetic improvement programs aiming at identifying potential species. Future research involving the use of remotely piloted aircraft and remote sensors could be a strategy to monitor nutrient contents in different parts of trees throughout the cycle of different eucalyptus species. Physical classification is the procedure adopted by the rice unloading, delivery, storage, and processing units for the commercial characterization of the quality of the grains. This step occurs mostly by the conventional method, which demands more time and specialized labor, and the results are subjective since the evaluation is visual. In order to make the operation faster, more accurate, and less dependent, non-destructive technologies and computational intelligence can be applied to characterize grain quality. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize and predict the quality of whole, processed rice grains, as well as classify any defects present. This was achieved by sampling from the upper and lower points of four silo dryers with capacities of up to 40,000 sacks. The grain samples had moisture contents of 16%, 17%, 18%, and 19% and were subjected to drying-aeration until reaching 12% moisture content (w.b.). Near-infrared spectroscopy technology and Machine Learning algorithm models (Artificial Neural Networks, decision tree algorithms Quinlan's algorithm, Random Tree, REPTree, and Random Forest) were employed for this purpose. By analyzing Pearson's correlation statistics, a strong negative correlation (R2 = 0.98) was found between moisture content and the yield of whole grains. Conversely, a strong positive correlation (R2 = 0.97) was observed between moisture content and classified physical defects across the various characterized physicochemical constituents. These findings indicate the effectiveness of near-infrared spectroscopy technology. The Random Tree model (RandT) successfully predicted the grain quality outcomes and is therefore recommended as the model of choice, obtained Pearson's correlation coefficient (r = 0.96), mean absolute error (MAE = 0.017), and coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.92). The results obtained here reveal that the combination of near-infrared spectroscopy technology and Machine Learning algorithm models is an excellent non-destructive alternative to manual physical classification for characterizing the physicochemical quality of whole and defective rice grains. Machine learning (ML) algorithms can be used to predict wood volume in a faster and more accurate way, providing reliable answers in forest inventories. The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of different ML techniques to predict the volume of eucalyptus wood, using diameter at breast height (DBH) and total height (Ht) as input variables, obtained by measuring DBH and Ht of 72 trees of six eucalyptus species (Eucalyptus camaldulensis, E. uroplylla, E. saligna, E. grandis, E. urograndis, and Corymbria citriodora). The trees were cut down in two different epochs, rendering 48 samples at 24 months and 24 samples at 48 months, and the volume of each tree was measured using the Smailian method. This research explores five machine learning models, namely artificial neural networks (ANN), K-nearest neighbor (KNN), multiple linear regression (LR), random forest (RF) and support vector machine (SVM), to estimate the volume of eucalyptus wood using DBH and Ht. Artificial neural networks achieved higher correlations between observed and estimated wood volume values. However, the RF outperformed all models by providing lower MAE and higher correlations between observed and estimated wood volume values. The Amazon region comprises the largest tropical forest on the planet and is responsible for absorbing huge amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere. However, changes in land use and cover have contributed to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions, especially CO2, and in endangered indigenous lands and protected areas in the region. The objective of this study was to detect changes in CO2 emissions and removals associated with land use and land cover changes in the Brazilian Legal Amazon (BLA) through the analysis of multispectral satellite images from 2009 to 2019. The Gross Primary Production (GPP) and CO2Flux variables were estimated by the MODIS sensor onboard Terra and Aqua satellite, representing carbon absorption by vegetation during the photosynthesis process. Atmospheric CO2 concentration was estimated from the GOSAT satellite. The variables GPP and CO2Flux showed the effective flux of carbon in the BLA to atmosphere, which were weakly correlated with precipitation (r = 0.191 and 0.133). The forest absorbed 211.05 TgC annually but, due to its partial conversion to other land uses, the loss of 135,922.34 km2 of forest area resulted in 5.82 TgC less carbon being absorbed. Pasture and agriculture, which comprise the main land conversions, increased by 100,340.39 km2 and absorbed 1.32 and 3.19 TgC less, and emitted close to twice more, than forest in these areas. Atmospheric CO2 concentrations increased from 2.2 to 2.8 ppm annually in BLA, with hotspots observed in the southeast Amazonia, and CO2 capture by GPP showed an increase over the years, mainly after 2013, in the north and west of the BLA. This study brings to light the carbon dynamics, by GPP and CO2Flux models, as related to the land use and land cover in one of the biggest world carbon reservoirs, the Amazon, which is also important to fulfillment of international agreements signed by Brazil to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and for biodiversity conservation and other ecosystem services in the region. Using spectral data to quantify nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) contents in soybean plants can help breeding programs develop fertilizer-efficient genotypes. Employing machine learning (ML) techniques to classify these genotypes according to their nutritional content makes the analyses performed in the programs even faster and more reliable. Thus, the objective of this study was to find the best ML algorithm(s) and input configurations in the classification of soybean genotypes for higher N, P, and K leaf contents. A total of 103 F2 soybean populations were evaluated in a randomized block design with two repetitions. At 60 days after emergence (DAE), spectral images were collected using a Sensefly eBee RTK fixed-wing remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) with autonomous take-off, flight plan, and landing control. The eBee was equipped with the Parrot Sequoia multispectral sensor. Reflectance values were obtained in the following spectral bands (SBs): red (660 nm), green (550 nm), NIR (735 nm), and red-edge (790 nm), which were used to calculate the vegetation index (VIs): normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), normalized difference red edge (NDRE), green normalized difference vegetation index (GNDVI), soil-adjusted vegetation index (SAVI), modified soil-adjusted vegetation index (MSAVI), modified chlorophyll absorption in reflectance index (MCARI), enhanced vegetation index (EVI), and simplified canopy chlorophyll content index (SCCCI). At the same time of the flight, leaves were collected in each experimental unit to obtain the leaf contents of N, P, and K. The data were submitted to a Pearson correlation analysis. Subsequently, a principal component analysis was performed together with the k-means algorithm to define two clusters: one whose genotypes have high leaf contents and another whose genotypes have low leaf contents. Boxplots were generated for each cluster according to the content of each nutrient within the groups formed, seeking to identify which set of genotypes has higher nutrient contents. Afterward, the data were submitted to machine learning analysis using the following algorithms: decision tree algorithms J48 and REPTree, random forest (RF), artificial neural network (ANN), support vector machine (SVM), and logistic regression (LR, used as control). The clusters were used as output variables of the classification models used. The spectral data were used as input variables for the models, and three different configurations were tested: using SB only, using VIs only, and using SBs+VIs. The genus Gossypium has important ethnobotanical and economic value for Amazonian Native Communities (A.N.C.). However, little research has been undertaken on the distribution and genetic diversity of cotton populations maintained in the Peruvian rainforest. This work aims to present the first report on the genetic diversity of Gossypium spp. populations in the A.N.C. of the province of La Convención, Cusco-Peru. The methodology was based on exploring, collecting, identifying, and characterizing the Gossypium populations present in the A.N.C. Twenty-six descriptors were evaluated (9 quantitative and 17 qualitative), and with this information, distribution, correlation, and principal component (PC) analyses were carried out. As a result, plants of two species [G. barbadense L. (44 samples) and G. hirsutum L. (19 samples)], one variety [G. barbadense var. brasiliensis (75 samples)], and three previously unidentified variations (9 samples) were identified. Altogether, 147 samples were collected. G. barbadense var. brasiliensis, which was always found in association with other economic crops within an altitude range of 338 to 1086 m, was the most predominant (51%), distributed in eleven A.N.C. and always in small plots (up to 2 ha). G. barbadense L. was cultivated between 397 and 1137 m of altitude in eight A.N.C. in plots of up to 3 ha in marginal lands. G. hirsutum L., with a smaller distribution (13%), was found between 334 and 497 m of altitude in only three communities; this species is cultivated in marginal areas throughout the year. The variability found for the first two PCs when considering the quantitative and qualitative descriptors was high (74.7%) and moderate (48.2%), respectively. When combining all the descriptors, the analysis showed that the first two PCs accounted for 51.8% of the total variability of the data. The PCs of the two types of data and their combination confirmed that the three populations found were grouped. The nine undefined samples were close to or intermediate between the described ones, showing that these samples may be the result of spontaneous crosses; as such, these samples need to be better evaluated with other tools for further definition. The information obtained shows that in the A.N.C. of Cusco-Peru, there is variability conserved by the inhabitants, who have been able to maintain and use these genotypes, even from their Amazonian indigenous ancestry, and the environment has been able to generate variability among the species, as will be highlighted in future works. Predicting maize yield using spectral information, temperature, and different irrigation management through machine learning algorithms provide information in a fast, accurate, and non-destructive way. The use of multispectral sensor data coupled with irrigation management in maize allows further exploration of water behavior and its relationship with changes in spectral bands presented by the crop. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate, by means of multivariate statistics and machine learning techniques, the relationship between irrigation management and spectral bands in predicting maize yields. Field experiments were carried out over two seasons (first and second seasons) in a randomized block design with four treatments (control and three additional irrigation levels) and eighteen sample repetitions. The response variables analyzed were vegetation indices (IVs) and crop yield (GY). Measurement of spectral wavelengths was performed with the Sensefly eBee RTK, with autonomous flight control. The eBee was equipped with the Parrot Sequoia multispectral sensor acquiring reflectance at the wavelengths of green (550 nm ± 40 nm), red (660 nm ± 40 nm), red-edge (735 nm ± 10 nm), and NIR (790 nm ± 40 nm). The blue length (496 nm) was obtained by additional RGB imaging. Data were subjected to Pearson correlations (r) between the evaluated variables represented by a correlation and scatter plot. Subsequently, the canonical analysis was performed to verify the interrelationship between the variables evaluated. Data were also subjected to machine learning (ML) analysis, in which three different input dataset configurations were tested: using only irrigation management (IR), using irrigation management and spectral bands (SB+IR), and using irrigation management, spectral bands, and temperature (IR+SB+Temp). ML models used were: Artificial Neural Network (ANN), M5P Decision Tree (J48), REPTree Decision Tree (REPT), Random Forest (RF), and Support Vector Machine (SVM). A multiple linear regression (LR) was tested as a control model. Widespread resistance to QoIs, DMI and SDHIs fungicides has been reported for Brazilian populations of the wheat blast pathogen Pyricularia oryzae Triticum lineage (PoTl). A pre-existing resistance mechanism not associated with target site mutations has been indicated for resistance to DMIs and SDHIs, with strong indication that PoTl has multidrugresistance (MDR). Therefore, the main objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that resistance to DMI and SDHI fungicides detected in PoTl was due to efflux pump mediated MDR mechanism(s) by characterizing the sensitivity to antifungal efflux pump substrates. Four antifungal substrates were tested: tolnaftate (TOL), cycloheximide (CHX), rhodamine 6G (RH6G) and triphenyltin chloride (TPCL). TPCL and RH6G were considered the most relevant indicators for enhanced MDR activity. Among the 16 PoTl isolates tested, 9 were insensitive to TPCL, 1 to TOL, 16 to RH6G and 1 to CHX. The PoTl isolates were grouped into four distinct multidrug resistance phenotypes (MDRPs) based on resistance to combinations of fungicides and antifungal efflux pump substrates. Insensitivity to TPCL, RH6G and or TOL correlated well with DMI insensitivity, but MDR was not associated with SDHI resistance. The identification of multiple MDRP phenotypes associated with DMI resistance in our study warrants further research aimed at revealing the exact mechanisms of multidrug resistance in the wheat blast pathogen, including efflux pumps overexpression via transcriptomic analyses of differentially expressed genes; identification and discovery of mutations associated with changes in promoter regions or transcription factors of efflux transporters associated with multidrug resistance. The Pantanal is the world's largest and most biodiverse continental sheet-flow wetland. Recently, vast tracts of the Pantanal have succumbed to the occurrence of fires, raising serious concerns over the future integrity of the biodiversity and ecosystem services of this biome, including revenues from ecotourism. These wildfires degrade the baseline of natural ecosystems and the ecotourism economy across the region. Local residents ("Pantaneiros") anecdotally state that extensive cattle herbivory can solve the contemporary flammability problem of the Pantanal by controlling vegetation biomass, thereby preventing or reducing both fuel loads and fires across the region. Here, we examine the covariation between the presence and density of cattle and the incidence of fires across the Brazilian Pantanal. Variables assessed included bovine cattle density, SPI (Standardized Precipitation Index), GPP (Gross Primary Productivity)/biomass estimate, and fire foci along a 19-year time series (2001 to 2019). Our findings show that fire foci across the Pantanal biome are related to climatic variables, such as lower annual precipitation and higher annual drought indices (SPI) rather than to cattle stocking rates. Therefore, the notion of "cattle firefighting", a popular concept often discussed in some academic circles, cannot be validated because cattle numbers are unrelated to aboveground phytomass. Gross primary productivity further invalidated the "cattle herbivory" hypothesis because GPP was found to be strongly correlated with cattle density but not with the spatial distribution of fires. Fires throughout the Pantanal are currently aggravated by the presence of livestock and result from a combination of extreme weather events and outdated agricultural practices. Using remote sensing combined with machine learning (ML) techniques is a promising approach to classify soybean cultivars. Therefore, the objectives of this study are (i) to verify which input dataset configuration (using only spectral bands, only vegetation indices, or both) is more accurate in the identification of soybean cultivars, and (ii) to verify which ML technique is more accurate in the identification of soybean cultivars. Information was extracted from five central irrigation pivots in the same region and with the same sowing date in the 2015/2016 crop year, in which each pivot was cultivated with a different cultivar, in which the cultivars used were: CV1—P98y12 RR, CV2—Desafio RR, CV3—M6410 IPRO, CV4—M7110 IPRO, and CV5—NA5909 RR. A cloud-free orbital image of the site was acquired from the Google Earth Engine platform. In addition to the spectral bands alone, a total of 13 vegetation indices were calculated. The models tested were: artificial neural networks (ANN), radial basis function network (RBF), decision tree algorithms J48 (DT) and reduced error pruning tree (REP), random forest (RF), and support vector machine (SVM). The five soybean cultivars were classified by the six-machine learning (ML) models in stratified randomized cross-validation with k-fold = 10 and 10 repetitions (100 runs for each model). After obtaining the r and MAE statistics, analysis of variance was performed considering a 6 × 3 factorial scheme (models versus inputs) with 10 repetitions (folds). The means were grouped by the Scott–Knott test at 5% probability. The spectral bands were the most accurate among the tested inputs in the identification of soybean cultivars. Forest fires destroy productive land throughout the world. In Brazil, mainly the Northeast of Brazil (NEB) is strongly affected by forest fires and bush fires. Similarly, there is no adequate study of long-term data from ground and satellite-based estimation of fire foci in NEB. The objectives of this study are: (i) to evaluate the spatiotemporal estimation of fires in NEB biomes via environmental satellites during the long term over 1998–2018, and (ii) to characterize the environmental degradation in the NEB biomes via orbital products during 1998–2018, obtained from the Burn Database (BDQueimadas) for 1794 municipalities. The spatiotemporal variation is estimated statistically (descriptive, exploratory and multivariate statistics) from the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) and Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) through the Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation Station (CHIRPS). Moreover, we identify 10 homogeneous groups of fire foci (G1–G10) with a total variance of 76.5%. The G1 group is the most extended group, along with the G2 group, the exception being the G3 group. Similarly, the G4–G10 groups have a high percentage of hotspots, with more values in the municipality of Grajaú, which belongs to the agricultural consortium. The gradient of fire foci from the coast to the interior of the NEB is directly associated with land use/land cover (LULC) changes, where the sparse vegetation category and areas without vegetation are mainly involved. The Caatinga and Cerrado biomes lose vegetation, unlike the Amazon and Atlantic Forest biomes. The fires detected in the Cerrado and Atlantic Forest biomes are the result of agricultural consortia. In environmental research, remote sensing techniques are mostly based on orbital data, which are characterized by limited acquisition and often poor spectral and spatial resolutions in relation to suborbital sensors. This reflects on carbon patterns, where orbital remote sensing bears devoted sensor systems for CO2 monitoring, even though carbon observations are performed with natural resources systems, such as Landsat, supported by spectral models such as CO2Flux adapted to multispectral imagery. Based on the considerations above, we have compared the CO2Flux model by using four different imagery systems (Landsat 8, PlanetScope, Sentinel-2, and AisaFenix) in the northern part of the state of Mato Grosso, southern Brazilian Amazonia. The study area covers three different land uses, which are primary tropical forest, bare soil, and pasture. After the atmospheric correction and radiometric calibration, the scenes were resampled to 30 m of spatial resolution, seeking for a parametrized comparison of CO2Flux, as well as NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) and PRI (Photochemical Reflectance Index). The results obtained here suggest that PlanetScope, MSI/Sentinel-2, OLI/Landsat-8, and AisaFENIX can be similarly scaled, that is, the data variability along a heterogeneous scene in evergreen tropical forest is similar. We highlight that the spatial-temporal dynamics of rainfall seasonality relation to CO2 emission and uptake should be assessed in future research. Our results provide a better understanding on how the merge and/or combination of different airborne and orbital datasets that can provide reliable estimates of carbon emission and absorption within different terrestrial ecosystems in southern Amazonia. Caatinga biome, located in the Brazilian semi-arid region, is the most populous semi-arid region in the world, causing intensification in land degradation and loss of biodiversity over time. The main objective of this paper is to determine and analyze the changes in land cover and use, over time, on the biophysical parameters in the Caatinga biome in the semi-arid region of Brazil using remote sensing. Landsat-8 images were used, along with the Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land (SEBAL) in the Google Earth Engine platform, from 2013 to 2019, through spatiotemporal modeling of vegetation indices, i.e., leaf area index (LAI) and vegetation cover (VC). Moreover, land surface temperature (LST) and actual evapotranspiration (ETa) in Petrolina, the semi-arid region of Brazil, was used. The principal component analysis was used to select descriptive variables and multiple regression analysis to predict ETa. The results indicated significant effects of land use and land cover changes on energy balances over time. In 2013, 70.2% of the study area was composed of Caatinga, while the lowest percentages were identified in 2015 (67.8%) and 2017 (68.7%). Rainfall records in 2013 ranged from 270 to 480 mm, with values higher than 410 mm in 46.5% of the study area, concentrated in the northern part of the municipality. On the other hand, in 2017 the lowest annual rainfall values (from 200 to 340 mm) occurred. Low vegetation cover rate was observed by LAI and VC values, with a range of 0 to 25% vegetation cover in 52.3% of the area, which exposes the effects of the dry season on vegetation. The highest LST was mainly found in urban areas and/or exposed soil. In 2013, 40.5% of the region's area had LST between 48.0 and 52.0 °C, raising ETa rates (~4.7 mm day−1). Our model has shown good outcomes in terms of accuracy and concordance (coefficient of determination = 0.98, root mean square error = 0.498, and Lin's concordance correlation coefficient = 0.907). The significant increase in agricultural areas has resulted in the progressive reduction of the Caatinga biome. The Amazon Basin is undergoing extensive environmental degradation as a result of deforestation and the rising occurrence of fires. The degradation caused by fires is exacerbated by the occurrence of anomalously dry periods in the Amazon Basin. The objectives of this study were: (i) to quantify the extent of areas that burned between 2001 and 2019 and relate them to extreme drought events in a 20-year time series; (ii) to identify the proportion of countries comprising the Amazon Basin in which environmental degradation was strongly observed, relating the spatial patterns of fires; and (iii) examine the Amazon Basin carbon balance following the occurrence of fires. To this end, the following variables were evaluated by remote sensing between 2001 and 2019: gross primary production, standardized precipitation index, burned areas, fire foci, and carbon emissions. During the examined period, fires affected 23.78% of the total Amazon Basin. Brazil had the largest affected area (220,087 fire foci, 773,360 km2 burned area, 54.7% of the total burned in the Amazon Basin), followed by Bolivia (102,499 fire foci, 571,250 km2 burned area, 40.4%). Overall, these fires have not only affected forests in agricultural frontier areas (76.91%), but also those in indigenous lands (17.16%) and conservation units (5.93%), which are recognized as biodiversity conservation areas. During the study period, the forest absorbed 1,092,037 Mg of C, but emitted 2908 Tg of C, which is 2.66-fold greater than the C absorbed, thereby compromising the role of the forest in acting as a C sink. The Brazilian government intends to complete the paving of the BR-319 highway, which connects Porto Velho in the deforestation arc region with Manaus in the middle of the Amazon Forest. This paving is being planned despite environmental legislation, and there is concern that its effectiveness will cause additional deforestation, threatening large portions of forest, conservation units (CUs), and indigenous lands (ILs) in the surrounding areas. In this study, we evaluated environmental degradation along the BR-319 highway from 2008 to 2020 and verified whether highway maintenance has contributed to deforestation. For this purpose, we created a 20 km buffer adjacent to the BR-319 highway and evaluated variables extracted from remote sensing information between 2008 and 2020. Fire foci, burned areas, and rainfall data were used to calculate a drought index using statistical tests for a time series. Furthermore, these were related to data on deforestation, CUs, and ILs using principal component analysis and Pearson's correlation. Our results showed that 743 km2 of forest was deforested during the period evaluated, most of which occurred in the last four years. A total of 16,472 fire foci were identified. Both deforestation and fire foci occurred mainly outside the CUs and ILs. The most affected areas were close to capital cities, and after resuming road maintenance in 2015, deforestation increased outside the capital cities. Current government policy for Amazon occupation promotes deforestation and will compromise Brazil's climate goals of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and deforestation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In soybean, there is a lack of research aiming to compare the performance of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) methods to predict more than one agronomic variable, such as days to maturity (DM), plant height (PH), and grain yield (GY). As these variables are important to developing an overall precision farming model, we propose a machine learning approach to predict DM, PH, and GY for soybean cultivars based on multispectral bands. The field experiment considered 524 genotypes of soybeans in the 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 growing seasons and a multitemporal–multispectral dataset collected by embedded sensor in an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). We proposed a multilayer deep learning regression network, trained during 2000 epochs using an adaptive subgradient method, a random Gaussian initialization, and a 50% dropout in the first hidden layer for regularization. Three different scenarios, including only spectral bands, only vegetation indices, and spectral bands plus vegetation indices, were adopted to infer each variable (PH, DM, and GY). The DL model performance was compared against shallow learning methods such as random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), and linear regression (LR). The results indicate that our approach has the potential to predict soybean-related variables using multispectral bands only. Both DL and RF models presented a strong (r surpassing 0.77) prediction capacity for the PH variable, regardless of the adopted input variables group. Our results demonstrated that the DL model (r = 0.66) was superior to predict DM when the input variable was the spectral bands. For GY, all machine learning models evaluated presented similar performance (r ranging from 0.42 to 0.44) for each tested scenario. In conclusion, this study demonstrated an efficient approach to a computational solution capable of predicting multiple important soybean crop variables based on remote sensing data. The aim of this work was to answer the following question: can influential points modify the recommendation of genotypes, based on regression methods, in the presence of genotype × environment (G × E)? Therefore, we compared the parameters of the adaptability and stability of three methodologies based on regression in the presence of influential points. Specifically, were evaluated methods based on simple, non-parametric and quantile (τ = 0.50) regressions. The dataset used in this work corresponds to 18 variety trials of cotton cultivars that were conducted in the 2013–2014 and 2014–2015 crop seasons. The evaluated variable was the cotton fiber yield (kg/ha). Once we noticed that the effect of G × E interaction is significant, the statistical procedures adopted for the adaptability and stability analysis of the genotypes. To verify the presence of a possible influential point, we used the leverage values, studentized residuals (SR), DFBETAS and Cook's distance. As a result, the influential points can modify the recommendation of genotypes, based on regression methods, in the presence of G × E interaction. The non-parametric and quantile (τ = 0.50) regressions, which are based on median estimators, are less sensitive to the presence of influential points avoiding misleading recommendations of genotypes in terms of adaptability. Machine learning techniques (ML) have gained attention in precision agriculture practices since they efficiently address multiple applications, like estimating the growth and yield of trees in forest plantations. The combination between ML algorithms and spectral vegetation indices (VIs) from high-spatial-resolution line measurement, segment: 0.079024 m multispectral imagery, could optimize the prediction of these biometric variables. In this paper, we investigate the performance of ML techniques and VIs acquired with an unnamed aerial vehicle (UAV) to predict the diameter at breast height (DBH) and total height (Ht) of eucalyptus trees. An experimental site with six eucalyptus species was selected, and the Parrot Sequoia sensor was used. Several ML techniques were evaluated, like random forest (RF), REPTree (DT), alternating model tree (AT,) k-nearest neighbor (KNN), support vector machine (SVM), artificial neural network (ANN), linear regression (LR), and radial basis function (RBF). Each algorithm performance was verified using the correlation coefficient (r) and the mean absolute error (MAE). We used, as input, 34 VIs as numeric variables to predict DHB and Ht. We also added to the model a categorical variable as input identifying the different eucalyptus trees species. The RF technique obtained an overall superior estimation for all the tested configurations. Still, the RBF also showed a higher performance for predicting DHB, numerically surpassing the RF both in r and MAE, in some cases. For Ht variable, the technique that obtained the smallest MAE was SVM, though in a particular test. In this regard, we conclude that a combination of ML and VIs extracted from UAV-based imagery is suitable to estimate DBH and Ht in eucalyptus species. Wind damage is one of the major factors affecting forest ecosystem sustainability, especially in the coastal region. Typhoon Lekima is among the top five most devastating typhoons in China and caused economic losses totaling over USD 8 billion in Zhejiang Province alone during 9–12 August 2019. However, there still is no assessment of its impacts on forests. Here we detected forest damage and its spatial distribution caused by Typhoon Lekima by classifying Landsat 8 OLI images using the random forest (RF) machine learning algorithm and the univariate image differencing (UID) method on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. The accuracy assessment indicated a high overall accuracy (>87%) and kappa coefficient (>0.75) for forest-damage detection, as evaluated against field-investigated plot data, with better performance using the RF method. The total affected forest area by Lekima was 4598.87 km2, accounting for 8.44% of the total forest area in Zhejiang Province. The light-, moderate- and severe-damage forest areas were 2106.29 km2, 2024.26 km2 and 469.76 km2, respectively. Considering the damage severity, the net forest canopy loss fraction was 2.57%. The affected forest area and damage severity exhibited large spatial variations, which were affected by elevation, slope, precipitation and forest type. Our study indicated a larger uncertainty for affected forest area and a smaller uncertainty for the proportion of damage severity, based on multiple assessment approaches. This is among the first studies on forest damage due to typhoons at a regional scale in China, and the methods can be extended to examine the impacts of other super-strong typhoons on forests. Our study results on damage severity, spatial distribution and controlling factors could help local governments, the forest sector and forest landowners make decision on tree-planting planning and sustainable management after typhoon strikes and could also raise public and governmental awareness of typhoons' damage on China's inland forests. Under ideal conditions of nitrogen (N), maize (Zea mays L.) can grow to its full potential, reaching maximum plant height (PH). As a rapid and nondestructive approach, the analysis of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV)-based imagery may be of assistance to estimate N and height. The main objective of this study is to present an approach to predict leaf nitrogen concentration (LNC, g kg−1) and PH (m) with machine learning techniques and UAV-based multispectral imagery in maize plants. An experiment with 11 maize cultivars under two rates of N fertilization was carried during the 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 crop seasons. The spectral vegetation indices (VI) normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), normalized difference red-edge index (NDRE), green normalized difference vegetation (GNDVI), and the soil adjusted vegetation index (SAVI) were extracted from the images and, in a computational system, used alongside the spectral bands as input parameters for different machine learning models. A randomized 10-fold cross-validation strategy, with a total of 100 replicates, was used to evaluate the performance of 9 supervised machine learning (ML) models using the Pearson's correlation coefficient (r), mean absolute error (MAE), coefficient of regression (R²), and root mean square error (RMSE) metrics. The results indicated that the random forest (RF) algorithm performed better, with r and RMSE, respectively, of 0.91 and 1.9 g.kg−¹ for LNC, and 0.86 and 0.17 m for PH. It was also demonstrated that VIs contributed more to the algorithm's performances than individual spectral bands. This study concludes that the RF model is appropriate to predict both agronomic variables in maize and may help farmers to monitor their plants based upon their LNC and PH diagnosis and use this knowledge to improve their production rates in the subsequent seasons. Simple Summary: Agricultural crop systems have adopted integrated management as a model of success in pest control; however, chemical control is still prioritized. The use of pesticides incorrectly and excessively has provided a reduction in natural enemies, selection of resistant populations and resurgence of pests. Chrysoperla externa is a predator found in several regions in Brazil that preys on different pest insects. Entomopathogenic fungi Beauveria and Metarhizium also stand out for causing epizootics on pests. Both predators and entomopathogens can simultaneously act as pest control; thus, verifying the selectivity of entomopathogenic fungi to predators increases the potential for biological control through synergism and conservation of natural enemies in the agroecosystem. Considering the control potential of these different biological control agents, in this study we evaluated the selectivity of Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae and Metarhizium rileyi to the larvae of this predator. The results provide evidence that the biological development of larvae of C. externa is not influenced by the entomopathogenic fungus. These species of fungi can be recommended, aiming at a management of populations of arthropod pests, with low effect on C. externa when it is present in the agrosystem. We aimed to evaluate the selectivity of entomopathogenic fungi to larvae of Chrysoperla externa (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae). For this purpose, Beauveria bassiana (strain ESALQ PL63), Metarhizium anisopliae (strain ESALQ E9) and Metarhizium rileyi (strain UFMS 03) were assessed at different concentrations (1 × 107, 1 × 108 and 1 × 109 conidia mL−1). The control treatment consisted of distilled water and Tween80 0.01. The treatments were applied with a Potter spray tower using two different methodologies: direct application (DA) and dry film (DF). Up to 96 h after application, no treatment provided a larval mortality above 3%. After 120 h, only B. bassiana induced significant mortality in all instars, with rates of 26%, 17% and 10% for first, second and third instar larval periods, respectively. There was no difference regarding to the application method or concentration of conidia. The percentage of individuals that revealed changes in the length of the larval and pupal periods varied among different treatments with entomopathogenic fungi and control treatments, application methodologies and concentrations. Despite B. bassiana revealing a higher mortality than M. anisopliae and M. rileyi on larvae of C. externa, these three entomopathogenic fungi may be used in association with C. externa for sustainable pest management. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the interactions between Chrysoperla externa (Hagen, 1861) and the eggs and first-instar larvae of Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner 1805) infected by entomopathogenic fungi. The H. armigera eggs and larvae were treated with sterile distilled water + 0.01% Tween 80 (T1, control), Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill (T2), Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsch.) Sorok (T3), or Metarhizium rileyi (Farlow) Samson. (T4) at different concentrations (1 × 107, 1 × 108, and 1 × 109 con. mL−1). For each treatment, a single third-instar C. externa was offered prey (a combination of 80 eggs and 50 first-instar H. armigera larvae) at 0, 24, and 48 h after inoculation. Ten trials were completed for each treatment, and the entire experiment was repeated three times. Neither the concentrations of fungi nor the application method affected consumption by C. externa. Because all the predator larvae reached the pupal phase, with 100% viability in adults, these results suggest that entomopathogenic fungi and C. externa are compatible and that the simultaneous use of these biological control agents is possible for managing H. armigera.
