Background/Objectives: Developments in eye-tracking technology are opening up new possibilities for diagnosing patients in a state of minimal consciousness because they can provide information on visual behavior, and the movements of the eyeballs are correlated with the patients' level of consciousness. The purpose of this study was to provide validation of a tool, based on eye tracking by comparing the results obtained with the assessment obtained using the Coma Recovery Scale-Revised (CRS-R). Methods: The mul-ti-center clinical trial was conducted in Poland in 2022–2023. The results of 46 patients who were not able to communicate verbally due to severe brain injury were analyzed in this study. The state of consciousness of patients was assessed using the Minimally Conscious State Detection test (MCSD), installed on an eye tracker and compared to CRS-R. The examinations consisted of performing the MCSD test on patients five times (T1–T5) within 14 days. Collected data were processed based on the FDA and GCP's regulatory requirements. Depending on the nature of the data, the mean and standard deviation, median and lower and upper quartiles, and maximum and minimum values were calculated. Passing–Bablok regression analysis was used to assess the measurement equiva-lence of the methods used. Results: There was no difference between the MCSD and CRS-R in the raw change between T5 and T1 time points, as well as in the total % of points from all time points. The MCSD results from each time point show that at least the first two measurements serve to famil-iarize and adapt the patient to the measurement process, and the third and next measurement should be considered reliable. Conclusions: The results indicated a significant relationship be-tween the scores obtained with MCSD and CRS-R. The results suggest that it seems reasonable to introduce an assessment of the patient's state of consciousness based on eye-tracking technology. The use of modern technology to assess a patient's state of consciousness opens up the opportunity for greater objectivity, as well as a reduction in the workload of qualified personnel. The use of nanoparticles in the industry carries the risk of their release into the environment. Based on the presumption that the primary graphene oxide (GO) toxicity mechanism is reactive oxygen species production in the cell, the question arises as to whether well-known antioxidants can protect the cell or significantly reduce the effects of GO. This study focused on the possible remedial effect of vitamin C in Acheta domesticus intoxicated with GO for whole lives. The reproduction potential was measured at the level of Vitellogenin (Vg) gene expression, Vg protein expression, hatching success, and share of nutrition in the developing egg. There was no simple relationship between the Vg gene's expression and the Vg protein content. Despite fewer eggs laid in the vitamin C groups, hatching success was high, and egg composition did not differ significantly. The exceptions were GO20 and GO20 + Vit. C groups, with a shift in the lipid content in the egg. Most likely, ascorbic acid impacts the level of Vg gene expression but does not affect the production of Vg protein or the quality of eggs laid. Low GO concentration in food did not cause adverse effects, but the relationship between GO toxicity and its concentration should be investigated more thoroughly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Inflammatory demyelination and impaired recovery processes result in permanent neurodegeneration and neurological disability in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). In terms of smoldering MS, chronic neuroinflammation develops in the early period of the disease and leads to confirmed disability accumulation. There is a great need to identify biomarkers of neurodegeneration and disease progression. Methods: A single-center prospective observational study was performed. The median age of the patients was 40 (31–52) years. Women comprised 64% of the study population. We evaluated the concentrations of the parameters of brain injury (NF-H, GFAP, S100B and UCHL1) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and the selected interleukins (ILs) in serum of 123 relapsing–remitting MS (RRMS) and 88 progressive MS (PMS) patients. Results: The levels of GFAP, S100B and UCHL were higher in the PMS group than the RRMS group, in contrast to the levels of NF-H. We observed a positive correlation between the selected pro-inflammatory cytokines and the parameters of brain injury. The Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) score increased with GFAP and NF-H levels and was correlated with the selected ILs. The concentrations of S100B, UCHL1 and NF-H reflected the duration of MS symptoms. Conclusions: The levels of brain injury parameters in the CSF and the selected serum ILs in MS patients seem to be promising biomarkers to determine neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation in smoldering MS. Background: It is essential to identify novel non-invasive markers of liver fibrosis for clinical and scientific purposes. Thus, the goal of our survey was to assess the serological expression of selected microRNAs (miRNAs) in patients with alcohol-related liver cirrhosis (ALC) and to correlate them with other existing markers. Methods: Two hundred and thirty-nine persons were enrolled in the study: one hundred and thirty-nine with ALC and one hundred healthy controls. Serological expression of miR-126-3p, miR-197-3p and miR-1-3p was evaluated in all participants. Direct markers of liver fibrosis (PICP, PIIINP, PDGF-AB, TGF-α and laminin) together with indirect indices (AAR, APRI, FIB-4 and GPR) were also assessed. The additional evaluation concerned hematological parameters: MPV, PDW, PCT, RDW, MPR, RPR NLR, PLR and RLR. Results: The expression of miR-197-3p was lower in ALC compared to controls (p < 0.0001). miR-126-3p correlated negatively with AST (p < 0.05) and positively with miR-197-3p (p < 0.001). miR-197-3p correlated with direct markers of liver fibrosis—positively with PDGF-AB (p < 0.005) and negatively with TGF-α (p < 0.01). Significant negative relationships were noticed between miR-1-3p and the number of neutrophils (p < 0.05), TGF-α (p < 0.05) and laminin (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The achieved results and observed correlations prove the potential involvement of the examined miRNAs in the process of liver fibrosis, giving a novel insight into the diagnostics of liver cirrhosis. Animal tumors serve as reasonable models for human cancers. Both human and animal tumors often reveal triplet EPR signals of nitrosylhemoglobin (HbNO) as an effect of nitric oxide formation in tumor tissue, where NO is complexed by Hb. In search of factors determining the appearance of nitrosylhemoglobin (HbNO) in solid tumors, we compared the intensities of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) signals of various iron–nitrosyl complexes detectable in tumor tissues, in the presence and absence of excess exogenous iron(II) and diethyldithiocarbamate (DETC). Three types of murine tumors, namely, L5178Y lymphoma, amelanotic Cloudman S91 melanoma, and Ehrlich carcinoma (EC) growing in DBA/2 or Swiss mice, were used. The results were analyzed in the context of vascularization determined histochemically using antibodies to CD31. Strong HbNO EPR signals were found in melanoma, i.e., in the tumor with a vast amount of a hemorrhagic necrosis core. Strong Fe(DETC)2NO signals could be induced in poorly vascularized EC. In L5178Y, there was a correlation between both types of signals, and in addition, Fe(RS)2(NO)2 signals of non-heme iron–nitrosyl complexes could be detected. We postulate that HbNO EPR signals appear during active destruction of well-vascularized tumor tissue due to hemorrhagic necrosis. Molds pose a severe challenge to agriculture because they cause very large crop losses. For this reason, synthetic fungicides have been used for a long time. Without adequate protection against pests and various pathogens, crop losses could be as high as 30–40%. However, concerns mainly about the environmental impact of synthetic antifungals and human health risk have prompted a search for natural alternatives. But do natural remedies only have advantages? This article reviews the current state of knowledge on the use of antifungal substances in agriculture to protect seeds against phytopathogens. The advantages and disadvantages of using both synthetic and natural fungicides to protect cereal grains were discussed, indicating specific examples and mechanisms of action. The possibilities of an integrated control approach, combining cultural, biological, and chemical methods are described, constituting a holistic strategy for sustainable mold management in the grain industry. There is increasing evidence that vitamin D (VitD) supplementation may reduce inflammation in individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different doses of VitD on selected markers of inflammation in patients with relapsing–remitting MS (RRMS). Participants were divided depending on the supplemented dose of VitD into a high-dose (2000 IU/d; HD) group and a low-dose (15,960 IU/month; LD) group (n = 23 and n = 29, respectively). The concentration of 25(OH)D and the levels of CXCL16, PTX3, ALCAM, IL-1RA, and OPG were measured initially and after six months of VitD supplementation in blood serum. A significant increase in the concentrations of CXCL16, PTX3, and OPG was observed during the study (p = 0.02, p = 0.01, and p < 0.01, respectively). Furthermore, a higher increase in PTX3 and OPG in the LD group was observed (p = 0.04 and p = 0.03, respectively). A significant positive correlation was observed between the 25(OH)D serum concentration and PTX3 (R = 0.28, p < 0.05) and OPG (R = 0.28, p < 0.05) only at the beginning of the study. In patients with RRMS, such doses of VitD might be too low to induce obvious beneficial effects on the pro-inflammatory and inflammatory balance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ophidiomyces ophidiicola, the causative agent of ophidiomycosis, poses a potential threat to wild snakes worldwide. This study aimed to retrospectively investigate the prevalence of O. ophidiicola in archived snake moults collected from the San River Valley in the Bieszczady Mountains, Poland, from 2010 to 2012. Using qPCR for O. ophidiicola detection and conventional PCR for clade characterisation, we analysed 58 moults and one road-killed specimen of Zamenis longissimus and Natrix natrix. A novel combination of primers (ITS2L) was used to simultaneously confirm SYBR Green-based qPCR results and perform genotyping. O. ophidiicola has been detected from two Z. longissimus and one N. natrix specimens. The identified clade (I-B) is consistent with those found in wild snakes of eastern Europe and San River Valley, indicating that O. ophidiicola has been present in this region for at least a decade. This study underscores the value of historical samples in understanding the long-term presence of pathogens and highlights the potential role of environmental reservoirs in the persistence of O. ophidiicola. Our findings are crucial for informing conservation strategies for the endangered Aesculapian snake populations in Poland, emphasising the need for ongoing monitoring and habitat management to mitigate the potential impact of ophidiomycosis. Cytokines regulate immune responses and are crucial to MS pathogenesis. This study evaluated pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokine concentrations in the CSF of de novo diagnosed RRMS patients compared to healthy controls. We assessed cytokine levels in the CSF of 118 de novo diagnosed RRMS patients and 112 controls, analyzing relationships with time from symptom onset to diagnosis, MRI lesions, and serum vitamin D levels. Elevated levels of IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-13, FGF-basic, and GM-CSF, and lower levels of IL-1β, IL-1RA, IL-5, IL-7, IL-9, IL-10, IL-12p70, IL-15, G-CSF, PDGF-bb, and VEGF were observed in RRMS patients compared to controls. IL-2, IL-4, IL-12p70, PDGF, G-CSF, GM-CSF, and FGF-basic levels increased over time, while IL-10 decreased. IL-1β, IL-1RA, IL-6, TNF-α, and PDGF-bb levels negatively correlated with serum vitamin D. TNF-α levels positively correlated with post-contrast-enhancing brain lesions. IL-15 levels negatively correlated with T2 and Gd(+) lesions in C-spine MRI, while TNF-α, PDGF-bb, and FGF-basic correlated positively with T2 lesions in C-spine MRI. IL-6 levels positively correlated with post-contrast-enhancing lesions in Th-spine MRI. In this research, we developed boron-rich nanoparticles that can be used for boron neutron capture therapy as potential carriers for boron delivery to cancerous tissues. Functionalized carbonated boron nitride nanostructures (CBNs) were successfully synthesized in self-propagating combustion waves in mixtures of high-nitrogen explosives and boron compounds. The products' composition, morphology, and structural features were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, low-temperature nitrogen sorption analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, high-resolution scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The extreme conditions prevailing in combustion waves favor the formation of nanosized CBN hollow grains with highly disordered structures that are properly functionalized on the surface and inside the particles. Therefore, they are characterized by high porosity and good dispersibility in water, which are necessary for medical applications. During biological tests, a concentration-dependent effect of the obtained boron nitride preparations on the viability of normal and neoplastic cells was demonstrated. Moreover, the assessment of the degree of binding of fluorescently labeled nanoparticles to selected cells confirmed the relationships between the cell types and the concentration of the preparation at different incubation time points. In the swiftly advancing field of swarm robotics and unmanned aerial vehicles, precise and effective testing methods are essential. This article explores the crucial role of software-in-the-loop (SITL) simulations in developing, testing, and validating drone swarm control algorithms. Such simulations play a crucial role in reproducing real-world operational scenarios. Additionally, they can (regardless of the type of application) accelerate the development process, reduce operational risks, and ensure the consistent performance of drone swarms. Our study demonstrates that different geometrical arrangements of drone swarms require flexible control strategies. The leader-based control model facilitates coherent movement and enhanced coordination. Addressing various issues such as communication delays and inaccuracies in positioning is essential here. These shortcomings underscore the value of improved approaches to collision avoidance. The research described in this article focused on the dynamics of drone swarms in a simulated context and emphasized their operational efficiency and adaptability in various scenarios. Advanced simulation tools were utilized to analyze the interaction, communication, and adaptability of autonomous units. The presented results indicate that the arrangement of drones significantly affects their coordination and collision avoidance capabilities. They also underscore the importance of control systems that can adapt to various situations. The impact of communication delays and errors in positioning systems on the required distance between drones in a grid structure is also presented. Background: Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) is part of the innate immune system and acute-phase protein. Current data state that acute COVID-19 patients have higher levels of serum NGAL (sNGAL), but it is not known if higher protein levels are maintained in the convalescents. As post-COVID complications are currently the most important aspect of the disease, further research into metabolic and immunological consequences of the disease is needed. Methods: We aimed to determine the levels of sNGAL in a patient population 3 months after the acute phase of the disease and to identify the factors that may be related to the elevation of sNGAL levels in the mentioned cohort. The study included 146 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 in different stages of the disease. Three months after COVID-19 diagnosis, patients' sera were sampled and tested. Results: We demonstrate an association between the severity of the disease in the acute phase and elevated sNGAL levels three months after recovery, with the exception of the most severe hospitalized patients, who received early treatment. Moreover, we establish that sNGAL levels could be associated with prolonged dyspnea and the regulation of hunger and satiety in COVID-19 convalescents. Conclusions: These observations support the view that the introduction of antiviral treatment, steroids, and intense oxygen therapy reduces post-COVID immune-associated complications. Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system characterized by autoimmune-mediated damage to oligodendrocytes and subsequent myelin destruction. Clinical implications: Clinically, the disease presents with many symptoms, often evolving over time. The insidious onset of MS often manifests with non-specific symptoms (prodromal phase), which may precede a clinical diagnosis by several years. Among them, headache is a prominent early indicator, affecting a significant number of MS patients (50–60%). Results: Headache manifests as migraine or tension-type headache with a clear female predilection (female-male ratio 2-3:1). Additionally, some disease-modifying therapies in MS can also induce headache. For instance, teriflunomide, interferons, ponesimod, alemtuzumab and cladribine are associated with an increased incidence of headache. Conclusions: The present review analyzed the literature data on the relationship between headache and MS to provide clinicians with valuable insights for optimized patient management and the therapeutic decision-making process. Despite its significant growth over the past fifteen years, research on parental burnout is just beginning to explore the relationships of the syndrome with child behavior. Previous research with adolescents has shown the existence of associations between parental burnout and internalizing and externalizing behaviors in the offspring. The current study is an attempt to (i) replicate this preliminary evidence specifically among Chilean preschool children and (ii) explore the mediating/moderating effects of positive parenting that may be involved in these putative associations. A sample of 383 Chilean mothers participated in this cross-sectional online study. The results confirmed the associations between parental burnout and child internalizing and externalizing behaviors. We also observed that positive parenting was a mediator in the relationship linking parental burnout and the child's internalizing (full mediation) and externalizing (partial mediation) behaviors. Positive parenting also partially mediated the association between the child's externalizing behavior and parental burnout. Our results further suggested that the child's externalizing behavior was possibly a more substantial contributing factor to parental burnout than the child's internalizing behavior. The pandemic period due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) revolutionized all possible areas of global health. Significant consequences were also related to diverse extrapulmonary manifestations of this pathology. The liver was found to be a relatively common organ, beyond the respiratory tract, affected by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). Multiple studies revealed the essential role of chronic liver disease (CLD) in the general outcome of coronavirus infection. Present concerns in this field are related to the direct hepatic consequences caused by COVID-19 and pre-existing liver disorders as risk factors for the severe course of the infection. Which mechanism has a key role in this phenomenon—previously existing hepatic disorder or acute liver failure due to SARS-CoV-2—is still not fully clarified. Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) constitutes another not fully elucidated context of coronavirus infection. Should the toxic effects of ethanol or already developed liver cirrhosis and its consequences be perceived as a causative or triggering factor of hepatic impairment in COVID-19 patients? In the face of these discrepancies, we decided to summarize the role of the liver in the whole picture of coronavirus infection, paying special attention to ALD and focusing on the pathological pathways related to COVID-19, ethanol toxicity and liver cirrhosis. Russia's armed attack on Ukraine on 24 February 2022 started one of the worst refugee crises of the 21st century. It caused involuntary migrations of Ukrainians to other countries, mainly to Europe, and caused the refugees to face the challenge of integrating with the host countries' labor markets. The aim of this study was to analyze the views of the Ukrainian refugees who migrated to two European countries: Poland and Hungary. We took into account self-esteem, social support, good job expectations, and submissiveness in the labor market. The data were obtained via a survey method using the modified CAPI (Computer-Assisted Personal Interview) technique between 21 November and 20 December 2022 from 807 adult Ukrainian refugees. Results show that disability fosters lower self-esteem, self-assessment of resources, and job demands. Among those who have children, the mean value of self-esteem was higher than in the group without any children. No statistically significant differences were found in the area of professional work. According to the estimation of structural model results, expectations of a good job have a significant, negative effect on the tendency toward submissiveness. The assessment of personal resources and the level of self-esteem have a significant and positive effect on the expectations of a good job. Both a higher level of personal resources and a higher level of self-esteem resulted in higher good job expectations. The assessment of personal resources also has a positive effect on the level of self-esteem. We also found a direct relationship between personal resources, self-esteem, and the tendency toward submissiveness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite the development of modern drugs, drug resistance in oncology remains the main factor limiting the curability of patients. This paper shows the use of a group of hydrophobic statins to inhibit drug resistance (Pgp protein). In a chemoresistance melanoma cell model, viability, necroptosis with DNA damage, the absorption of the applied pharmaceuticals, and the functional activity of the ABCB1 drug transporter after administration of docetaxel or docetaxel with a selected hydrophobic statin were studied. Taxol-resistant human melanoma cells from three stages of development were used as a model: both A375P and WM239A metastatic lines and radial growth phase WM35 cells. An animal model (Mus musculus SCID) was developed for the A375P cell line. The results show that hydrophobic statins administered with docetaxel increase the accumulation of the drug in the tumor cell a.o. by blocking the ABCB1 channel. They reduce taxol-induced drug resistance. The tumor size reduction was observed after the drug combination was administrated. It was shown that the structural similarity of statins is of secondary importance, e.g., pravastatin and simvastatin. Using cytostatics in the presence of hydrophobic statins increases their effectiveness while reducing their overall toxicity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease affecting the colon and rectum. UC's pathogenesis involves colonic epithelial cell abnormalities and mucosal barrier dysfunction, leading to recurrent mucosal inflammation. The purpose of the article is to show the complex interplay between ulcerative colitis and the microbiome. The literature search was conducted using the PubMed database. After a screening process of studies published before October 2023, a total of 136 articles were selected. It has been discovered that there is a fundamental correlation of a robust intestinal microbiota and the preservation of gastrointestinal health. Dysbiosis poses a grave risk to the host organism. It renders the host susceptible to infections and has been linked to the pathogenesis of chronic diseases, with particular relevance to conditions such as ulcerative colitis. Current therapeutic strategies for UC involve medications such as aminosalicylic acids, glucocorticoids, and immunosuppressive agents, although recent breakthroughs in monoclonal antibody therapies have significantly improved UC treatment. Furthermore, modulating the gut microbiome with specific compounds and probiotics holds potential for inflammation reduction, while fecal microbiota transplantation shows promise for alleviating UC symptoms. In unsaturated glycerol polyesters, the C=C bond is present. It makes it possible to carry out post-polymerisation modification (PPM) reactions, such as aza-Michael addition. This reaction can conduct crosslinking under in-situ conditions for tissue engineering regeneration. Until now, no description of such use of aza-Michael addition has been described. This work aims to crosslink the synthesised poly(glycerol itaconate) (PGItc; P3), polyester from itaconic acid (AcItc), and glycerol (G). The PGItc syntheses were performed in three ways: without a catalyst, in the presence of p-toluenesulfonic acid (PTSA), and in the presence of zinc acetate (Zn(OAc)2). PGItc obtained with Zn(OAc)2 (150 °C, 4 h, G:AcItc = 2:1) was used to carry out the aza-Michael additions. Crosslinking reactions were conducted with each of the five aliphatic diamines: 1,2-ethylenediamine (1,2-EDA; A1), 1,4-butanediamine (1,4-BDA; A2), 1,6-hexanediamine (1,6-HDA; A3), 1,8-octanediamine (1,8-ODA; A4), and 1,10-decanediamine (1,10-DDA; A5). Four ratios of the proton amine group: C=C bond were investigated. The maximum temperature and crosslinking time were measured to select the best amine for the addition product's application. The distinct structure of cationic organic compounds plays a pivotal role in enhancing their water solubility, which in turn influences their bioavailability. A representative of these compounds, which contains a delocalized charge, is 5-amino-2-(5-amino-3-methyl-1,2-oxazol-4-yl)-3-methyl-2,3-dihydro-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-ylium bromide (ED). The high-water solubility of ED obviates the need for potentially harmful solvents during in vitro testing. The antibacterial and antifungal activities of the ED compound were assessed in vitro using the microtiter plate method and a biocellulose-based biofilm model. Additionally, its cytotoxic effects on wound bed fibroblasts and keratinocytes were examined. The antistaphylococcal activity of ED was also evaluated using an in vivo larvae model of Galleria mellonella. Results indicated that ED was more effective against Gram-positive bacteria than Gram-negative ones, exhibiting bactericidal properties. Furthermore, ED demonstrated greater efficacy against biofilms formed by Gram-positive bacteria. At bactericidal concentrations, ED was non-cytotoxic to fibroblasts and keratinocytes. In in vivo tests, ED was non-toxic to the larvae. When co-injected with a high load of S. aureus, it reduced the average larval mortality by approximately 40%. These findings suggest that ED holds promise for further evaluation as a potential treatment for biofilm-based wound infections, especially those caused by Gram-positive pathogens like S. aureus. Boron carbide is one of the hardest materials in the world which can be synthesized by various methods. The most common one is a carbothermic or magnesiothermic reduction of B2O3 performed at high temperatures, where the obtained powder still requires grinding and purification. The goal of this research is to present the possibility of synthesizing B4C nanoparticles from elements via vapor deposition and modifying the morphology of the obtained powders, particularly those synthesized at high temperatures. B4C nanoparticles were synthesized in the process of direct synthesis from boron and carbon powders heated at the temperature of 1650 °C for 2 h under argon and characterized by using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and dynamic light scattering measurements. The physicochemical characteristics of B4C nanoparticles were determined, including the diffusion coefficients, hydrodynamic diameter, electrophoretic mobilities, and zeta potentials. An evaluation of the obtained B4C nanoparticles was performed on several human and mouse cell lines, showing the relation between the cytotoxicity effect and the size of the synthesized nanoparticles. Assessing the suitability of the synthesized B4C for further modifications in terms of its applicability in boron neutron capture therapy was the overarching goal of this research. Electrospinning is a process that has attracted significant interest in recent years. It provides the opportunity to produce nanofibers that mimic the extracellular matrix. As a result, it is possible to use the nonwovens as scaffolds characterized by high cellular adhesion. This work focused on the synthesis of poly(glycerol itaconate) (PGItc) and preparation of nonwovens based on PGItc gels and polylactide. PGItc gels were synthesized by a reaction between itaconic anhydride and glycerol. The use of a mixture of PGItc and PLA allowed us to obtain a material with different properties than with stand-alone polymers. In this study, we present the influence of the chosen ratios of polymers and the OH/COOH ratio in the synthesized PGItc on the properties of the obtained materials. The addition of PGItc results in hydrophilization of the nonwovens' surface without disrupting the high porosity of the fibrous structure. Spectral and thermal analyzes are presented, along with SEM imagining. The preliminary cytotoxicity research showed that nonwovens were non-cytotoxic materials. Cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs) are relatively common in the central nervous system. They occur in two forms, sporadic and familial (FCCMs). Three genes are recognized to be associated with FCCM, including CCM1, CCM2, and CCM3, the latter also called PDCD10. In this article, we describe a single-nucleotide variant in the PDCD10 gene in a 23-year-old Polish female with CCM. The NM_007217.4 (PDCD10): c.395+1G>A variant destroys the canonical splice donor site following exon 6. This is the first reported genetically characterized case of CCM (FCCM) in Poland. Forest fires are becoming a more significant problem in Central Europe, but their danger is not as high as that in Southern Europe. The exception, however, is forest fires occurring in disturbed areas (windthrow and bark beetle outbreak areas), which are comparable in severity and danger to the most serious forest fires. In this study, we describe the current situation in Central European countries in terms of fire protection for disturbed areas in managed forests and forest stands left to spontaneously develop (secondary succession). If a country has regulations and strategies in this area, they are often only published in the local language. In this review, we combine information from all Central European countries and summarize it in a unified international language, provide an opportunity for local authorities to express their own experiences, and integrate data from worldwide scientific research. Thus, this paper may be considered a universal guide for managing fire protection and preparedness in disturbed areas and can serve as a reference for the establishment of strict legislative rules at the state level. These laws must be obligatory for all stakeholders in individual countries. The motivation for this study was two large forest fires in an area left to spontaneously develop in the Bohemian Switzerland National Park in the Czech Republic and Harz Mountains in Germany in the summer of 2022. These incidents revealed that fire prevention legislation was inadequate or nonexistent in these areas. The strategy of the European Union is to increase the size of protected areas and spontaneous development areas. The role of the microbiome in the pathogenesis and treatment of asthma is significant. The purpose of this article is to show the interplay between asthma and the microbiome, and main areas that require further research are also highlighted. The literature search was conducted using the PubMed database. After a screening process of studies published before May 2023, a total of 128 articles were selected in our paper. The pre-treatment bronchial microbiome in asthmatic patients plays a role in their responsiveness to treatment. Gut microbiota and its dysbiosis can contribute to immune system modulation and the development of asthma. The association between the microbiome and asthma is complex. Further research is necessary to clarify which factors might moderate that relationship. An appropriate gut microbiome and its intestinal metabolites are a protective factor for asthma development. Prebiotics and certain dietary strategies may have a prophylactic or therapeutic effect, but more research is needed to establish final conclusions. Although the evidence regarding probiotics is ambiguous, and most meta-analyses do not support the use of probiotic intake to reduce asthma, several of the most recent studies have provided promising effects. The importance of epigenetic changes as a measurable endpoint in nanotoxicological studies is getting more and more appreciated. In the present work, we analyzed the epigenetic effects induced by citrate- and PEG-coated 20 nm silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in a model consisting of 4T1 breast cancer tumors in mice. Animals were administered with AgNPs intragastrically (1 mg/kg b.w. daily—total dose 14 mg/kg b.w.) or intravenously (administration twice with 1 mg/kg b.w.—total dose 2 mg/kg b.w.). We observed a significant decrease in 5-methylcytosine (5-mC) level in tumors from mice treated with citrate-coated AgNPs regardless of the route of administration. For PEG-coated AgNPs, a significant decrease in DNA methylation was observed only after intravenous administration. Moreover, treatment of 4T1 tumor-bearing mice with AgNPs decreased histone H3 methylation in tumor tissue. This effect was the most pronounced for PEG-coated AgNPs administered intravenously. No changes in histone H3 Lys9 acetylation were observed. The decrease in methylation of DNA and histone H3 was accompanied by changes in expression of genes encoding chromatin-modifying enzymes (Setd4, Setdb1, Smyd3, Suv39h1, Suv420h1, Whsc1, Kdm1a, Kdm5b, Esco2, Hat1, Myst3, Hdac5, Dnmt1, Ube2b, and Usp22) and genes related to carcinogenesis (Akt1, Brca1, Brca2, Mlh1, Myb, Ccnd1, and Src). The significance of the observed changes and the mechanisms responsible for their development are unclear, and more research in this area is warranted. Nevertheless, the present work points to the epigenetic effects as an important level of interaction between nanomaterials and biological systems, which should always be taken into consideration during analysis of the biological activity of nanomaterials and development of nanopharmaceuticals. Purpose: Results of the low-dose radiation therapy (LDRT) in patients with pneumonia due to COVID-19 has been presented. Methods: Fifteen patients received a single-fraction radiation dose of 1 Gy to the bilateral lungs due to pre-ARDS pneumonia in the course of COVID-19. Follow-up was performed on days 1, 3, 5, 7, 14 after LDRT. Results: Eleven patients (73%) were released up until day 28. Median hospitalization was 20 days; 28-day mortality was 13%. Median O2 saturation improved within 24 h after LDRT in 14/15, with median SpO2 values of 84.5% vs. 87.5% p = 0.016, respectively. At day 14 of hospitalization, 46% did not require oxygen supplementation. Significant decline in CRP and IL-6 was observed within 24 h post LDRT. No organ toxicities were noted. Conclusion: LDRT is feasible, well tolerated and may translate to early clinical recovery in patients with severe pneumonia. The fuzzy controller of the bottom product collecting system of the pulsating jig is presented. The primary purpose of the research work was to design and properly adapt the fuzzy controller so that it would enable the correct operation of the jig with appropriate control properties in all compartments of the jig. The results of industrial tests, in which selected indicators of regulation quality were considered, were analyzed. In this work, composite filaments in the form of sticks and 3D-printed scaffolds were investigated as a future component of an osteochondral implant. The first part of the work focused on the development of a filament modified with bioglass (BG) and Zn-doped BG obtained by injection molding. The main outcome was the manufacture of bioactive, strong, and flexible filament sticks of the required length, diameter, and properties. Then, sticks were used for scaffold production. We investigated the effect of bioglass addition on the samples mechanical and biological properties. The samples were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and microtomography. The effect of bioglass addition on changes in the SBF mineralization process and cell morphology was evaluated. The presence of a spatial microstructure within the scaffolds affects their mechanical properties by reducing them. The tensile strength of the scaffolds compared to filaments was lower by 58–61%. In vitro mineralization experiments showed that apatite formed on scaffolds modified with BG after 7 days of immersion in SBF. Scaffold with Zn-doped BG showed a retarded apatite formation. Innovative 3D-printing filaments containing bioglasses have been successfully applied to print bioactive scaffolds with the surface suitable for cell attachment and proliferation. In this paper, an original mathematical model and experimental results for the vibration generator and the magnetic spring prototype that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy are proposed. The magnetic spring model is developed by a robotic approach based on Denavit–Hartenberg's notation and designed by the 2-degrees of freedom kinematic chain for determination of its motion and estimation of several resonance frequencies useful in many energy harvesting applications. The vibration generator that moves the magnetic spring is modeled by neural networks and the magnetic spring potential energy is calculated by the finite elements method (FEM). Furthermore, the magnetic spring and the vibration generator are designed by the Simulink block diagram. Simple Summary: Roundup is a widely used herbicide. Its active component, glyphosate, is described as an endocrine disrupter. The effect of this glyphosate-containing herbicide on the reproductive parameters of crucian carp (Carassius carassius) was investigated in this study. The entire pituitary glands and ovarian fragments of crucian carp were incubated in vitro in the medium containing two different concentrations of Roundup (1 and 10 ng/mL). We assessed the final oocyte maturation and ovulation, structural changes in follicles, levels of 17,20β-progesterone, and luteinizing hormone. The mRNA levels of zona radiata (chorion) genes, kisspeptin, and its receptor as well as luteinizing hormone and estrogen receptors were also determined. Obtained results indicate that Roundup may adversely affect oocyte maturation and the quality of crucian carp eggs, suggesting that exposure to this herbicide can lead to reproductive disorders in fish. Roundup, the most popular herbicide in global agriculture, is regarded as an endocrine disruptor causing alterations of important hormones at the hypothalamic−pituitary−gonadal axis as well as impairment of gametogenesis. The whole pituitary glands of crucian carp (Carassius carassius) were incubated for 3 h in the medium containing Roundup (0-control, 1 and 10 ng/mL). The level of luteinizing hormone (LH), and mRNA transcript abundance of kisspeptin (kiss-1) and its receptor (gpr54), were determined. The isolated ovarian fragments were incubated for 24 h in the presence of Roundup and the following effects on reproductive parameters were determined: the final oocyte maturation and ovulation, structural changes in follicles, secretion of 17,20β-progesterone (17,20β-P) as well as mRNA transcript abundance of the luteinizing hormone receptor (lhr), estrogen receptors (erα, erβ1, erβ2), and zona radiata (chorion) proteins (zp2 and zp3). Roundup inhibited final oocyte maturation and decreased the percentage of ovulated eggs, and furthermore, caused structural changes in the ovarian follicular components. There were no significant changes in the measured hormone levels and analyzed genes mRNA transcript abundance. Summing up, obtained results indicate that Roundup may adversely affect oocyte maturation and the quality of eggs, suggesting that exposure to this herbicide can lead to reproductive disorders in fish. The aim of the present study was a simulation of the injection molding process of polycaprolactone filament sticks for further 3D printing of osteochondral implants. Polycaprolactone data are not available in the data banks of popular injection molding simulation programs. Therefore, thermal and rheological data from the literature were imported to the material database of Solidworks Plastics software to simulate the injection molding process of filament sticks. The influence of several injection molding parameters including melt temperature, injection time, and injection pressure on the geometry of filament stick (final part) was investigated. Based on the results of the performed simulation and analyses, it was possible to improve the injection process parameters. The accuracy of simulation predictions, based on the literature data, demonstrates the potential of using simulation as a tool to develop polycaprolactone parts for future implants and to optimize the injection molding process. There is accumulating evidence on the perinatal aspects of COVID-19, but available data are still insufficient. The reports on perinatal aspects of COVID-19 have been published on a small group of patients. Vertical transmission has been noted. The SARS-CoV-2 genome can be detected in umbilical cord blood and at-term placenta, and the infants demonstrate elevated SARS-CoV-2-specific IgG and IgM antibody levels. In this work, the analysis of clinical characteristics of RT-PCR SARS-CoV-2-positive pregnant women and their infants, along with the placental pathology correlation results, including villous trophoblast immunoexpression status for SARS-CoV-2 antibody, is presented. RT-PCR SARS-CoV-2 amniotic fluid testing was performed. Neonatal surveillance of infection status comprised RT-PCR testing of a nasopharyngeal swab and the measuring of levels of anti-SARS-CoV-2 in blood serum. In the initial study group were 161 pregnant women with positive test results. From that group, women who delivered during the hospital stay were selected for further analysis. Clinical data, laboratory results, placental histomorphology results, and neonatal outcomes were compared in women with immunohistochemistry (IHC)-con SARS-CoV-2-positive and IHC SARS-CoV-2-negative placentas (26 cases). A positive placental immunoprofile was noted in 8% of cases (n = 2), whereas 92% of cases were negative (n = 24). Women with placental infection proven by IHC had significantly different pathological findings from those without. One infected neonate was noted (n = 1; 4%). Infection was confirmed in perinatal autopsy, as there was the intrauterine fetal demise. The potential course of the infection with the risk of vertical transmission and implications for fetal–neonatal condition is critical for proper clinical management, which will involve comprehensive, multidisciplinary perinatal care for SARS-CoV-2-positive patients. The aim of this article is mathematical modelling and investigation of chosen parameters of a small energy harvesting system designed for energy harvesting from car tire mechanical vibrations to provide power supply for various sensors, e.g., in tire pressure monitoring system. The energy harvester consists of three permanent magnets inserted into a tube made from polyamide material. Comsol program has been used to calculate the force between the magnets, the stiffness of the magnetic spring, and the natural frequency of the system. MATLAB program has been used to simulate the movement of the moveable magnet to compare it with the measurements. Many electricity customers, particularly in the area of small and medium-sized enterprises, are characterized by a system of 3-phase unbalanced current consumption and the polarization of power factor in the individual phases. Strong variation of power factor in the different phases (often with both inductive and capacitive nature) causes the inability to install classic–a 3-phase reactive power compensators. Therefore, energy consumers are exposed to higher costs for the crossing of the contractual power factor. This paper describes the problem of reactive power forecasting with the use of artificial neural networks. For calculation, the Nonlinear Autoregressive (NAR) neural network was used for different input vector sizes and different numbers of neurons in the hidden layer for foreseeing reactive power generation. Results of simulations compared to real measurements confirm that it is possible to forecast the reactive power course, useful for optimal planning of reactive power compensation strategies. The aim of this paper is to establish mathematical modelling and simulation for the voltage induced during movement of the moveable magnet in a double-sided magnetic spring, being part of the energy harvesting system. For various configurations of the set of permanent magnets, the repulsive forces of magnetic spring and induced voltage in energy harvester winding will be calculated. Changing the geometrical dimensions and shape of permanent magnets allows one to control the stiffness of the so-called double-sided magnetic spring, and furthermore, allows one to change the natural frequency of the energy harvester system. Properly chosen stiffness in the energy harvester system is the crucial issue for high efficiency in energy recovery. In a given case, the energy harvester consists of three permanent magnets inserted into a tube with coils wound on it. To calculate the force between the magnets and the magnetic flux in the coils, the ANSYS program was used. The emergence of a highly transmissible and a more pathogenic B.1.617.2 (delta) variant of SARS-CoV-2 has brought concern over COVID-19 vaccine efficacy and the increased risk of severe breakthrough infections. The objective of this study was to assess the frequency and the clinical characteristics of severe breakthrough COVID-19 cases recorded in 10 Polish healthcare units between 1 June and 31 December 2021, a period during which a rapid surge in the share of B.1.617.2 infections was seen, while a significant number of populations were already fully vaccinated. Overall, 723 individuals who completed the initial vaccination regime (fully vaccinated group) and an additional 18 who received a booster dose were identified—together, they represented 20.8% of all the COVID-19 patients hospitalized during the same period in the same healthcare institutions (0.5% in the case of a group that received a booster dose). Although laboratory and clinical parameters did not differ between both groups, patients who received a booster tended to have lower CRP, IL-6, PCT, and d-dimer levels and they required oxygen therapy less frequently. The most common early COVID-19 symptoms in the studied group were fatigue, cough, fever (>38 °C), and dyspnea. Individuals with no detectable anti-spike IgG antibodies constituted 13%; the odds of being a humoral non-responder to the vaccine were increased in patients aged >70 years. Fully vaccinated patients hospitalized after more than 180 days from the last vaccine dose were significantly older and they were predominantly represented by individuals over 70 years and with comorbidities, particularly cardiovascular disease. Contrary to mRNA vaccines, most patients vaccinated with adenoviral vector vaccines were infected within six months. A total of 102 fatal cases (14% of all deaths among vaccinated individuals; 0.7% in the case of a group that received a booster dose) were recorded, representing 17.6% of all the COVID-19 fatalities recorded in June–December 2021 in the considered healthcare units. The odds of death were significantly increased in men, individuals aged >70 years, patients with comorbidities, and those identified as humoral non-responders to vaccination; in fully vaccinated patients the odds were also increased when the second vaccine dose was given >180 days before the first COVID-19 symptoms. The mortality rate in immunocompromised subjects was 19%. The results indicate that compared to vaccinated individuals, severe COVID-19 and deaths in the unvaccinated group were significantly more prevalent during the B.1.617.2-dominated wave in Poland; and, it highlight the protective role of a booster dose, particularly for more vulnerable individuals. An Active Queue Management (AQM) mechanism, recommended by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), increases the efficiency of network transmission. An example of this type of algorithm can be the Random Early Detection (RED) algorithm. The behavior of the RED algorithm strictly depends on the correct selection of its parameters. This selection may be performed automatically depending on the network conditions. The mechanisms that adjust their parameters to the network conditions are called the adaptive ones. The example can be the Adaptive RED (ARED) mechanism, which adjusts its parameters taking into consideration the traffic intensity. In our paper, we propose to use an additional traffic parameter to adjust the AQM parameters—degree of self-similarity—expressed using the Hurst parameter. In our study, we propose the modifications of the well-known AQM algorithms: ARED and fractional order P I α D β and the algorithms based on neural networks that are used to automatically adjust the AQM parameters using the traffic intensity and its degree of self-similarity. We use the Fluid Flow approximation and the discrete event simulation to evaluate the behavior of queues controlled by the proposed adaptive AQM mechanisms and compare the results with those obtained with their basic counterparts. In our experiments, we analyzed the average queue occupancies and packet delays in the communication node. The obtained results show that considering the degree of self-similarity of network traffic in the process of AQM parameters determination enabled us to decrease the average queue occupancy and the number of rejected packets, as well as to reduce the transmission latency. The focus of the present review is to investigate the role of melanin in the radioprotection of melanoma and attempts to sensitize tumors to radiation by inhibiting melanogenesis. Early studies showed radical scavenging, oxygen consumption and adsorption as mechanisms of melanin radioprotection. Experimental models of melanoma in hamsters and in gerbils are described as well as their use in biochemical and radiobiological studies, including a spontaneously metastasizing ocular model. Some results from in vitro studies on the inhibition of melanogenesis are presented as well as radio-chelation therapy in experimental and clinical settings. In contrast to cutaneous melanoma, uveal melanoma is very successfully treated with radiation, both using photon and proton beams. We point out that the presence or lack of melanin pigmentation should be considered, when choosing therapeutic options, and that both the experimental and clinical data suggest that melanin could be a target for radiosensitizing melanoma cells to increase efficacy of radiotherapy against melanoma. A tumor vasculature network undergoes intense growth and rebuilding during tumor growth. Traditionally, vascular networks are histologically examined using parameters such as vessel density determined from two-dimensional slices of the tumor. Two-dimensional probing of a complicated three-dimensional (3D) structure only provides partial information. Therefore, we propose the use of microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) imaging to analyze the evolution of a tumor vasculature in an experimental ocular tumor model. A Bomirski Hamster Melanoma was implanted in the anterior chamber of a hamster eye. Ultrasound (US) imaging of the same tumor was performed in vivo, and the vascular results obtained using the two methods were compared. Normal ocular tissues, a tumor, and a tumor vascular structure were revealed with high accuracy using micro-CT. The vessels that grew within the tumor were chaotic, leaky, and contained many convoluted micro-vessels and embolizations. They comprised 20–38% of the tumor mass. The blood flow in the larger functional vessels was in the range from 10 to 25 mm/s, as determined by in vivo Doppler US. The micro-CT imaging of the hamster eyeball enabled both qualitative and quantitative 3D analyses of the globe at a histological level. Although the presented images were obtained ex vivo, micro-CT noninvasive imaging is being developed intensively, and high-resolution in vivo imaging is feasible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In plants, the embryogenic transition of somatic cells requires the reprogramming of the cell transcriptome, which is under the control of genetic and epigenetic factors. Correspondingly, the extensive modulation of genes encoding transcription factors and miRNAs has been indicated as controlling the induction of somatic embryogenesis in Arabidopsis and other plants. Among the MIRNAs that have a differential expression during somatic embryogenesis, members of the MIRNA172 gene family have been identified, which implies a role of miR172 in controlling the embryogenic transition in Arabidopsis. In the present study, we found a disturbed expression of both MIRNA172 and candidate miR172-target genes, including AP2, TOE1, TOE2, TOE3, SMZ and SNZ, that negatively affected the embryogenic response of transgenic explants. Next, we examined the role of AP2 in the miR172-mediated mechanism that controls the embryogenic response. We found some evidence that by controlling AP2, miR172 might repress the WUS that has an important function in embryogenic induction. We showed that the mechanism of the miR172-AP2-controlled repression of WUS involves histone acetylation. We observed the upregulation of the WUS transcripts in an embryogenic culture that was overexpressing AP2 and treated with trichostatin A (TSA), which is an inhibitor of HDAC histone deacetylases. The increased expression of the WUS gene in the embryogenic culture of the hdac mutants further confirmed the role of histone acetylation in WUS control during somatic embryogenesis. A chromatin-immunoprecipitation analysis provided evidence about the contribution of HDA6/19-mediated histone deacetylation to AP2-controlled WUS repression during embryogenic induction. The upstream regulatory elements of the miR172-AP2-WUS pathway might involve the miR156-controlled SPL9/SPL10, which control the level of mature miR172 in an embryogenic culture. KMeY(PO4)2:5% Eu3+ phosphates have been synthesized by a novel hydrothermal method. Spectroscopic, structural, and morphological properties of the obtained samples were investigated by X-ray, TEM, Raman, infrared, absorption, and luminescence studies. The microscopic analysis of the obtained samples showed that the mean diameter of synthesized crystals was about 15 nm. The KCaY(PO4)2 and KSrY(PO4)2 compounds were isostructural and they crystallized in a rhabdophane-type hexagonal structure with the unit-cell parameters a = b ≈ 6.90 Å, c ≈ 6.34 Å, and a = b ≈ 7.00 Å, c ≈ 6.42 Å for the Ca and Sr compound, respectively. Spectroscopic investigations showed intense 5D0 → 7F4 transitions connected with D2 site symmetry of Eu3+ ions. Furthermore, for the sample annealed at 500 °C, europium ions were located in two optical sites, on the surface of grains and in the bulk. Thermal treatment of powders at high temperature provided better grain crystallinity and only one position of dopant in the crystalline structure. Simple Summary: The drug efflux mediated by xenobiotic transporters is one of the best recognized mechanisms of multidrug resistance in cancer that leads to the failure of therapeutic approaches. The aim of our research was to examine the influence of a growing tumor on the activity of xenobiotic transport in the host. Our study reveals a strong correlation between the development of melanoma tumor in mice and the level of breast cancer resistance protein, one of the major xenobiotic transporters, and its transcript in the normal tissues of the hosts distant from the tumor site. The systemic effects of the tumor are confirmed by a drastically enhanced xenobiotic transport, which is correlated with changes in the level of cytokines in blood. Such an unexpected type of tumor–host interaction, which leads to the systemic upregulation of breast cancer resistance protein, and very likely of other xenobiotic transporters too, has broad implications for cancer therapies, including chemotherapy and photodynamic therapy. Our findings shed new light on the biology of cancer and the complexity of cancer–host interactions that should be taken into account in the design of new generations of anti-cancer drugs and personalized medicine. The breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP or ABCG2) involved in cancer multidrug resistance (MDR), transports many hydrophobic compounds, including a number of anti-cancer drugs. Our comprehensive study using a mouse model reveals that a subcutaneously growing tumor strongly affects the expression of BCRP in the host's normal organs on both the transcriptional and translational level. Additionally, the efflux of BCRP substrates is markedly enhanced. The levels of BCRP and its transcript in normal tissues distant from the tumor site correlate with tumor growth and the levels of cytokines in the peripheral blood. Thus, oncogenic stress causes transient systemic upregulation of BCRP in the host's normal tissues and organs, which is possibly mediated via cytokines. Because BCRP upregulation takes place in many organs as early as the initial stages of tumor development, it reveals a most basic mechanism that may be responsible for the induction of primary MDR. We hypothesize that such effects are not tumor-specific responses, but rather constitute a more universal defense strategy. The xenobiotic transporters are systemically mobilized due to various stresses, seemingly in a pre-emptive manner so that the body can be quickly and efficiently detoxified. The superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF) is a white matter bundle that connects the frontal areas with the parietal areas. As part of the visuospatial attentional network, it may be involved in the development of schizophrenia. Deficit syndrome (DS) is characterized by primary and enduring negative symptoms. The present study assessed SLF integrity in DS and nondeficit schizophrenia (NDS) patients and examined possible relationships between it and psychopathology. Twenty-six DS patients, 42 NDS patients, and 36 healthy controls (HC) underwent psychiatric evaluation and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). After post-processing, fractional anisotropy (FA) values within the SLF were analyzed. Psychopathology was assessed with the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, Brief Negative Symptom Scale, and Self-evaluation of Negative Symptoms. The PANSS proxy for the deficit syndrome was used to diagnose DS. NDS patients had lower FA values than HC. DS patients had greater negative symptoms than NDS patients. After differentiating clinical groups and HC, we found no significant correlations between DTI measures and psychopathological dimensions. These results suggest that changes in SLF integrity are related to schizophrenia, and frontoparietal dysconnection plays a role in its etiopathogenesis. Accumulating evidence indicates that individuals with schizophrenia show poor dietary habits that might account for increased susceptibility to cardiovascular diseases in this population. However, it remains unknown whether this observation can be generalized over the whole population of individuals with schizophrenia. Therefore, in this study we aimed to investigate dietary habits, in terms of adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) in subjects with the deficit subtype of schizophrenia (SCZ-D), those with non-deficit subtype (SCZ-ND), and healthy controls (HCs). We recruited 45 individuals with SCZ-ND, 40 individuals with SCZ-D, and 60 HCs. Dietary habits were assessed using the Food Frequency Questionnaire-6 with a 12-month recall. Adherence to MD was decreased only in subjects with SCZ-D compared with HCs. Lower adherence to MD was associated with significantly higher levels of clinician-rated and self-reported negative symptoms (including alogia, avolition, and anhedonia). No significant correlations of adherence to MD with depressive symptoms were found. Lower adherence to MD was related to significantly higher body mass index in subjects with schizophrenia, but not in HCs. Our results indicate that poor adherence to MD is associated with a diagnosis of SCZ-D, higher severity of negative symptoms, and greater risk of developing overweight or obesity.
