A novel highly sensitive D-shaped photonic crystal fiber-based surface plasmon resonance (PCF-SPR) sensor for dual parameters of refractive index and temperature detecting is proposed. A PCF cladding polishing provides a D-shape design with a gold (Au) film coating for refractive index (RI) sensing (Core 1) and a composite film of silver (Ag) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) for temperature sensing (Core 2). Comsol Multiphysics 5.5 is used to design and simulate the proposed sensor by the finite element method (FEM). The proposed sensor numerically provides results with maximum wavelength sensitivities (WSs) of 51,200 and 56,700 nm/RIU for Core 1 and 2 as RI sensing while amplitude sensitivities are −98.9 and −147.6 RIU−1 with spectral resolution of 1.95 × 10−6 and 1.76 × 10−6 RIU, respectively. Notably, wavelength sensitivity of 17.4 nm/°C is obtained between −20 and −10 °C with resolution of 5.74 × 10−3 °C for Core 2 as temperature sensing. This sensor can efficiently work in the analyte and temperature ranges of 1.33–1.43 RI and −20–100 °C. A new analytical method, based on SPRi biosensors, has been developed for the simultaneous determination of the pro-angiogenic factors HIF-1α, angiopoietin-2 (ANG-2), and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) in biological fluids. These proteins take part in the process of angiogenesis, i.e., the creation of new blood vessels, which is a key stage of cancer development and metastasis. A separate validation process was carried out for each individual compound, indicating that the method can also be used to study one selected protein. Low values of the limit of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) indicate that the developed method enables the determination of very low concentrations, in the order of pg/mL. The LOD values obtained for HIF-1α, ANG-2, and IL-1β were 0.09, 0.01, and 0.01 pg/mL, respectively. The LOQ values were 0.27, 0.039, and 0.02 pg/mL, and the response ranges of the biosensor were 5.00–100.00, 1.00–20.00, and 1.00–15.00 pg/mL. Moreover, determining the appropriate validation parameters confirmed that the design offers high precision, accuracy, and sensitivity. To prove the usefulness of the biosensor in practice, determinations were made in plasma samples from a control group and from a study group consisting of patients with diagnosed bladder cancer. The preliminary results obtained indicate that this biosensor can be used for broader analyses of bladder cancer. Each of the potential biomarkers, HIF-1α, ANG-2, and IL-1β, produced higher concentrations in the study group than in the control group. These are preliminary studies that serve to develop hypotheses, and their confirmation requires the analysis of a larger number of samples. However, the constructed biosensor is characterized by its ease and speed of measurement, and the method does not require special preparation of samples. SPRi biosensors can be used as a sensitive and highly selective method for determining potential blood biomarkers, which in the future may become part of the routine diagnosis of cancers. 2-Furaldehyde (2-FAL) is one of the main by-products of the degradation of hemicellulose, which is the solid material of the oil–paper insulating system of oil-filled transformers. For this reason, it has been suggested as a marker of the degradation of the insulating system; sensing devices for 2-FAL analysis in a wide concentration range are of high interest in these systems. An optical sensor system is proposed; this consists of a chemical chip, able to capture 2-FAL from the insulating oil, coupled with a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) probe, both realized on multimode plastic optical fibers (POFs). The SPR platform exploits gold nanofilm or, alternatively, a double layer of gold and silicon oxide to modulate the sensor sensitivity. The capturing chip is always based on the same molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) as a receptor specific for 2-FAL. The system with the SPR probe based on a gold nanolayer had a higher sensitivity and a lower detection limit of fractions of μg L−1. Instead, the SPR probe, based on a double layer (gold and silicon oxide), has a lower sensitivity with a worse detection limit, and it is suitable for the detection of 2-FAL at concentrations of 0.01–1 mg L−1. Molecularly imprinted membranes (MIMs) have been a focal research interest since 1990, representing a breakthrough in the integration of target molecules into membrane structures for cutting-edge sensing applications. This paper traces the developmental history of MIMs, elucidating the diverse methodologies employed in their preparation and characterization on two-dimensional solid-supported substrates. We then explore the principles and diverse applications of MIMs, particularly in the context of emerging technologies encompassing electrochemistry, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), surface plasmon resonance (SPR), and the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). Furthermore, we shed light on the unique features of ion-sensitive field-effect transistor (ISFET) biosensors that rely on MIMs, with the notable advancements and challenges of point-of-care biochemical sensors highlighted. By providing a comprehensive overview of the latest innovations and future trajectories, this paper aims to inspire further exploration and progress in the field of MIM-driven sensing technologies. Developing novel catalysts with high activity and high stability for the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) is of great importance for the ever-broader applications of methanol fuel cells. Herein, we present a facile technique for synthesizing Au10Pt1@MnO2 catalysts using a wet chemical method and investigate their catalytic performance for the MOR. Notably, the Au10Pt1@MnO2-M composite demonstrated a significantly high peak mass activity of 15.52 A mg(Pt)−1, which is 35.3, 57.5, and 21.9 times greater than those of the Pt/C (0.44 A mg(Pt)−1), Pd/C (0.27 A mg(Pt)−1), and Au10Pt1 (0.71 A mg(Pt)−1) catalysts, respectively. Comparative analysis with commercial Pt/C and Pd/C catalysts, as well as Au10Pt1 HSNRs, revealed that the Au10Pt1@MnO2-M composite exhibited the lowest initial potential, the highest peak current density, and superior CO anti-poisoning capability. The results demonstrate that the introduction of MnO2 nanosheets, with excellent oxidation capability, not only significantly increases the reactive sites, but also promotes the reaction kinetics of the catalyst. Furthermore, the high surface area of the MnO2 nanosheets facilitates charge transfer and induces modifications in the electronic structure of the composite. Converting carbon dioxide (CO2) into high-value-added chemicals using solar energy is a promising approach to reducing carbon dioxide emissions; however, single photocatalysts suffer from quick the recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs and poor photoredox ability. Herein, silver (Ag) nanoparticles featuring with localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) are combined with g-C3N4 to form a Schottky junction for photothermal catalytic CO2 reduction. The Ag/g-C3N4 exhibits higher photocatalytic CO2 reduction activity under UV-vis light; the CH4 and CO evolution rates are 10.44 and 88.79 µmol·h−1·g−1, respectively. Enhanced photocatalytic CO2 reduction performances are attributed to efficient hot electron transfer in the Ag/g-C3N4 Schottky junction. LSPR-induced hot electrons from Ag nanoparticles improve the local reaction temperature and promote the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. The charge carrier transfer route was investigated by in situ irradiated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (3D-FDTD) method verified the strong electromagnetic field at the interface between Ag and g-C3N4. The photothermal catalytic CO2 reduction pathway of Ag/g-C3N4 was investigated using in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra (DRIFTS). Bone homeostasis relies on the delicate balance between osteoblast-mediated bone formation and osteoclast-mediated bone resorption. The casein kinase 2 interacting protein-1 (CKIP-1), a specific CK2α subunit-interacting protein, has been documented as one of the crucial negative regulators of bone formation. CKIP-1 siRNA therapy has constraints that limit its use in clinical applications. Therefore, it is necessary to explore effective targeting strategies for CKIP-1. In this study, we observed an upregulation of CKIP-1 protein expression in the microgravity environment, while its ubiquitination levels decreased. We further investigated the interaction between CKIP-1 and VHL and found that VHL enhanced CKIP-1 degradation through the ubiquitylation–proteasome system (UPS). Additionally, we discovered a small molecule ligand, named C77, through DNA-encoded library (DEL) screening, which binds to CKIP-1 both in vivo and in vitro, as confirmed by Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) and the Cellular Thermal shift assay (CETSA), respectively. Our findings demonstrated the potential of VHL and C77 as guiding factors in the development of CKIP-1-based Proteolysis-Targeting Chimeras (PROTACs), which could be future therapeutic interventions in disuse osteoporosis. The strong immunogenicity of the SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein is widely recognized, and the detection of specific antibodies is critical for COVID-19 diagnostics in patients. This research proposed direct, label-free, and sensitive detection of antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein (anti-SCoV2-rN). Recombinant SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein (SCoV2-rN) was immobilized by carbodiimide chemistry on an SPR sensor chip coated with a self-assembled monolayer of 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid. When immobilized under optimal conditions, a SCoV2-rN surface mass concentration of 3.61 ± 0.52 ng/mm2 was achieved, maximizing the effectiveness of the immunosensor for the anti-SCoV2-rN determination. The calculated KD value of 6.49 × 10−8 ± 5.3 × 10−9 M confirmed the good affinity of the used monoclonal anti-SCoV2-rN antibodies. The linear range of the developed immunosensor was from 0.5 to 50 nM of anti-SCoV2-rN, where the limit of detection and the limit of quantification values were 0.057 and 0.19 nM, respectively. Biogenic silver nanoparticles (AgNP) are among the fastest-growing nanomaterials due to the simplicity, efficiency, and sustainability of their biosynthesis using phytochemicals as reducing and coating agents. The agro-food industry generates large quantities of organic waste, a renewable source of biomolecules for AgNP biosynthesis. The main objective of this work was to prepare and characterize biogenic AgNP using a green tomato waste extract (TE) obtained by subcritical water extraction. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the use of such an extract in the synthesis of AgNP. The effects of the TE and AgNO3 concentrations, reaction time, pH, and temperature on AgNP physico-chemical characteristics and on in vitro cytotoxicity against HaCaT and THP-1 cells were assessed. Antimicrobial activity was determined in vitro and ex vivo. The wound-healing capability of AgNP was evaluated in vivo in an incisional wound mouse model. The developed AgNP have a Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) band between 402 and 406 nm and a size of ±60 nm, and they are negatively charged (−42 mV) and spherical. In vitro and ex vivo studies prove that AgNP do not compromise skin cells and can decrease cutaneous irritation. The AgNP formulated in a gel revealed similar wound-healing properties to a commercial silver-containing topical ointment. Overall, the biogenic synthesis of AgNP employing an extract of agricultural waste obtained by an eco-friendly method is simple and cost-effective and presents the potential for application in skin disease management. Receptor–ligand interactions at cell interfaces initiate signaling cascades essential for cellular communication and effector functions. Specifically, T cell receptor (TCR) interactions with pathogen-derived peptides presented by the major histocompatibility complex (pMHC) molecules on antigen-presenting cells are crucial for T cell activation. The binding duration, or dwell time, of TCR–pMHC interactions correlates with downstream signaling efficacy, with strong agonists exhibiting longer lifetimes compared to weak agonists. Traditional surface plasmon resonance (SPR) methods quantify 3D affinity but lack cellular context and fail to account for factors like membrane fluctuations. In the recent years, single-molecule Förster resonance energy transfer (smFRET) has been applied to measure 2D binding kinetics of TCR–pMHC interactions in a cellular context. Here, we introduce a rigorous mathematical model based on survival analysis to determine exponentially distributed receptor–ligand interaction lifetimes, verified through simulated data. Additionally, we developed a comprehensive analysis pipeline to extract interaction lifetimes from raw microscopy images, demonstrating the model's accuracy and robustness across multiple TCR–pMHC pairs. Our new software suite automates data processing to enhance throughput and reduce bias. In order to achieve a high-precision synchronous detection of two different refractive index (RI) analytes, a D-type surface plasmon resonance (SPR) photonic crystal fiber (PCF) RI sensor based on two channels is designed in this paper. The sensor uses a D-shaped planar region of the PCF and a large circular air hole below the core as the sensing channels. Surface plasmon resonance is induced by applying a coating of gold film on the surface. The full-vector finite-element method (FEM) is used to optimize the structural parameters of the optical fiber, and the sensing characteristics are studied, including wavelength sensitivity, RI resolution, full width at half maximum (FWHM), figure of merit (FOM), and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The results show that the channel 1 (Ch 1) can achieve RI detection of 1.36–1.39 in the wavelength range of 1500–2600 nm, and the channel 2 (Ch 2) can achieve RI detection of 1.46–1.57 in the wavelength range of 2100–3000 nm. The two sensing channels can detect independently or simultaneously measure two analytes with different RIs. The maximum wavelength sensitivity of the sensor can reach 30,000 nm/RIU in Channel 1 and 9900 nm/RIU in Channel 2. The RI resolutions of the two channels are 3.54 × 10−6 RIU and 10.88 × 10−6 RIU, respectively. Therefore, the sensor realizes dual-channel high- and low-RI synchronous detection in the ultra-long wavelength band from near-infrared to mid-infrared and achieves an ultra-wide RI detection range and ultra-high wavelength sensitivity. Graphene-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensors have emerged as a promising technology for the highly sensitive and accurate detection of biomolecules. This study presents a comprehensive theoretical analysis of graphene-based SPR biosensors, focusing on configurations with single and bimetallic metallic layers. In this study, we investigated the impact of various metallic substrates, including gold and silver, and the number of graphene layers on key performance metrics: sensitivity of detection, detection accuracy, and quality factor. Our findings reveal that configurations with graphene first supported on gold exhibit superior performance, with sensitivity of detection enhancements up to 30% for ten graphene layers. In contrast, silver-supported configurations, while demonstrating high sensitivity, face challenges in maintaining detection accuracy. Additionally, reducing the thickness of metallic layers by 30% optimizes light coupling and enhances sensor performance. These insights highlight the significant potential of graphene-based SPR biosensors in achieving high sensitivity of detection and reliability, paving the way for their application in diverse biosensing technologies. Our findings pretend to motivate future research focusing on optimizing metallic layer thickness, improving the stability of silver-supported configurations, and experimentally validating the theoretical findings to further advance the development of high-performance SPR biosensors. Salinity is a very important parameter from an environmental perspective, and therefore, efficient and accurate systems are required for marine environmental monitoring and productive industries. A plasmonic sensor based on doubly deposited tapered optical fibers (DLUWTs—double-layer uniform-waist tapers) for the measurement of salinity is presented. The physical principle of the sensor, as well as its structure, is discussed, and its performance is experimentally demonstrated, obtaining very good sensitivities. The possibility of shifting towards higher wavelength measuring ranges associated with DLUWTs is also exploited. At the same time, we have considered the necessity of an extensive characterization of the behavior of the refractive index of salty water, both with variations in temperature and the composition of the salts dissolved. This is important due to the somehow changing reality of salinity measurements and the possibility of establishing new approaches for the determination of absolute salinity as opposed to practical salinity based on electrical conductivity measurements. The results obtained, which show high sensitivity and a good performance in general without the need for the use of semi-empirical algorithms, permit, in our opinion, an advance in the tendency towards refractometric determination of salinity with optical sensors apt for in situ, real-time, accurate measurements in realistic measuring conditions. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) detection and monitoring are of great significance for evaluating the progression of many diseases and their therapeutic efficacy. Lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) is one of the most promising point-of-care testing (POCT) methods, yet suffers from low sensitivity and poor quantitative ability, which greatly limits its application in IL-6 detection. Hence, in this work, we integrated Aushell nanoparticles (NPs) as new LFIA reporters and achieved the colorimetric and photothermal dual-mode detection of IL-6. Aushell NPs were conveniently prepared using a galvanic exchange process. By controlling the shell thickness, their localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peak was easily tuned to near-infrared (NIR) range, which matched well with the NIR irradiation light. Thus, the Aushell NPs were endowed with good photothermal effect. Aushell NPs were then modified with IL-6 detection antibody to construct Aushell probes. In the LFIA detection, the Aushell probes were combined with IL-6, which were further captured by the capture IL-6 antibody on the test line of the strip, forming a colored band. By observation with naked eyes, the colorimetric qualitative detection of IL-6 was achieved with limit of 5 ng/mL. By measuring the temperature rise of the test line with a portable infrared thermal camera, the photothermal quantitative detection of IL-6 was performed from 1~1000 ng/mL. The photothermal detection limit reached 0.3 ng/mL, which was reduced by nearly 20 times compared with naked-eye detection. Therefore, this Aushell-based LFIA efficiently improved the sensitivity and quantitative ability of commercial colloidal gold LFIA. Furthermore, this method showed good specificity, and kept the advantages of convenience, speed, cost-effectiveness, and portability. Metallic nanoparticles have gained attention in technological fields, particularly photonics. The creation of silver/gold (Ag/Au) alloy NPs upon laser exposure of an assembly of these NPs was described. First, using the Nd: YAG pulsed laser ablation's second harmonic at the same average power and exposure time, Ag and Au NPs in distilled water were created individually. Next, the assembly of Ag and Au NP colloids was exposed again to the pulsed laser, and the effects were examined at different average powers and exposure times. Furthermore, Ag/Au alloy nanoparticles were synthesized with by raising the average power and exposure time. The absorption spectrum, average size, and shape of alloy NPs were obtained by using an ultraviolet-visible (UV–Vis) spectrophotometer and transmission electron microscope instrument. Ag/Au alloy NPs have been obtained in the limit of quantum dots (<10 nm). The optical band gap energies of the Ag/Au alloy colloidal solutions were assessed for different Ag/Au alloy NP concentrations and NP sizes as a function of the exposure time and average power. The experimental data showed a trend toward an increasing bandgap with decreasing nanoparticle size. The nonlinear optical characteristics of Ag/Au NPs were evaluated and measured by the Z-scan technique using high repetition rate (80 MHz), femtosecond (100 fs), and near-infrared (NIR) (750–850 nm) laser pulses. In open aperture (OA) Z-scan measurements, Ag, Au, and Ag/AuNPs present reverse saturation absorption (RSA) behavior, indicating a positive nonlinear absorption (NLA) coefficient. In the close-aperture (CA) measurements, the nonlinear refractive (NLR) indices (n2) of the Ag, Au, and Ag/Au NP samples were ascribed to the self-defocusing effect, indicating an effective negative nonlinearity for the nanoparticles. The NLA and NLR characteristics of the Ag/Au NPs colloids were found to be influenced by the incident power and excitation wavelength. The optical limiting (OL) effects of the Ag/Au alloy solution at various excitation wavelengths were studied. The OL effect of alloy NPs is greater than that of monometallic NPs. Inspired by the layered structure, light absorption, and charge carrier pathway of chloroplast thylakoids in natural photosynthesis, we propose a novel artificial photosynthesis platform, which is composed of layered structured vaterite as the scaffold with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), photosensitizer eosin Y (EY), and redox enzyme L-glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) as the functional components. The EY exhibited significantly enhanced light absorption and charge carrier generation due to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) around the AuNPs and light refraction within the layers. This artificial photosynthesis platform can regenerate reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) under visible light and promote the rapid conversion of α-ketoglutarate to L-glutamate (0.453 Mm/h). The excellent biocompatibility of layered vaterite significantly enhances the resistance of GDH to harsh conditions, including high pH (pH = 10) and elevated temperatures (37–57 °C). In this paper, synthetically scaled-up degenerately n-type doped indium tin oxide (Sn:In2O3) nanocrystals are described as highly transparent conductive materials possessing both optoelectronic and crystalline properties. With tin dopants serving as n-type semiconductor materials, they can generate free-electron carriers. These free electrons, vibrating in resonance with infrared radiation, induce strong localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), resulting in efficient infrared absorption. To commercialize products featuring Sn:In2O3 with localized surface plasmon resonance, a scaled-up synthetic process is essential. To reduce the cost of raw materials during synthesis, we aim to proceed with synthesis in a large reactor using industrial raw materials. Sn:In2O3 can be formulated into ink dispersed in solvents. Infrared-absorbing ink formulations can capitalize on their infrared absorption properties to render opaque in the infrared spectrum while remaining transparent in the visible light spectrum. The ink can serve as a security ink material visible only through infrared cameras and as a paint absorbing infrared light. We verified the transparency and infrared absorption properties of the ink produced in this study, demonstrating consistent characteristics in scaled-up synthesis. There is a growing need for precise and rapid detection methods in fields such as biomedical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and chemical analysis. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors have been used for the detection and quantification of a wide range of analytes, including biomolecules, chemicals, and gases, in real-time. Despite the promising capabilities of SPR sensors, there remains a gap in creating a balance between having a large enough area to capture a significant number of analytes for detection and being small enough to ensure high sensitivity. This research aims to explore the design of a D-shaped SPR-based optical fiber sensor, focusing on the use of copper, gold, and silver thin films at optimized width and thickness of 10 µm and 45 nm, respectively, to improve the sensor's performance. Employing a computational approach, this study examines the influence of the optimized width and refractive indices of metallic films on the sensor's characteristics. The 10 µm width of the metallic thin film has been found to produce an optimal balance between the sensitivity and the dynamic range of the sensor. Leveraging on the ratio of the real and imaginary parts of the dielectric constant of the thin film metal provides insight into the optical properties and sensitivity at certain wavelengths. Within an analyte refractive index range of 1.37–1.42 and a wavelength range of 650–1200 nm, results indicate that silver outperforms gold and copper at the optimized width with a wavelength sensitivity, and detection accuracy of 12,300 nmRIU−1, and 3.075, respectively. By optimizing the width of the metal thin film at 10 µm, a highly sensitive D-SPR is designed, allowing for enhanced sensor detection capabilities for a wide range of bioanalytes. In this study, an ultra-wideband absorber spanning from UV-B to middle-IR was designed and analyzed using a novel structure. The multilayer metamaterial, arranged from bottom to top, consisted of an Al metal layer, a lower SiO2 layer, a graphite layer, another SiO2 layer, a thin Ti layer, and a top SiO2 layer. The top layer of SiO2 had a 200 nm square cavity etched out, and then a square Ti nanopillar and a square Ti hollow outside a Ti nanopillar were embedded. This specific arrangement was chosen to maximize the absorption properties across a broad spectrum. The absorption spectrum of the designed absorber was thoroughly analyzed using the commercial finite element analysis software COMSOL Multiphysics® (version 6.0). This analysis confirmed that the combination of these various components achieved perfect absorption and an ultra-wideband response. The synergistic interaction between the layers and the nanopillars structure contributed significantly to the absorber's efficiency, making it a promising candidate for applications requiring broad-spectrum absorption. The comprehensive analyses of the parameters for different structures demonstrated that the effects of guided-mode resonance, coupling resonance, optical impedance matching, and propagating surface plasmon resonance existed in the investigated structure. The optimal model, determined through analyses using COMSOL Multiphysics®, showed that the broadband absorption in the range of 270 to 3600 nm, spanning from UV-B to middle-IR, exceeded 90.0%. The average absorption rate within this range was 0.967, with the highest reaching a near-perfect absorptivity of 99.9%. We also compared three absorption spectra in this study: the t1–t6 flat structure, the t1–t5 flat structure with t6 featuring a square cavity, and the structure proposed in this study. Plasmonic applications have traditionally relied on noble metals such as gold (Au) and silver (Ag) for their excellent plasmonic performance in the visible and near-infrared spectrum. However, these metals are costly, scarce, and have limitations such as low stability (Ag) and interband transition losses, which restrict their spectral range. To address these issues, alternative plasmonic materials have been explored. One such material is aluminum (Al), which is inexpensive, abundant, and exhibits remarkable plasmonic properties in the UV region as well as wide tunability. Al is also compatible with complementary metal–oxide semiconductor (CMOS) fabrication processes and is very stable due to its ultrathin native oxide layer. Alloying different metals can combine their advantageous properties, resulting in enhanced tunable optical characteristics. This study investigates the LSPR properties of AgAl alloy nanoparticles grown after the annealing of precursor AgAl bilayer films. Interestingly, LSPRs were also observed in some cases for the as-deposited bilayers. Background: Paclitaxel is a widely used cancer treatment drug that has a significant inhibitory effect on cervical cancer cells (HeLa cells). This study aims to investigate the effects of paclitaxel on HeLa cells and evaluate the application of terahertz (THz) spectroscopy and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensors in this process. Methods: We utilized an SPR biosensor in conjunction with THz spectroscopy to measure the terahertz absorbance spectra of HeLa cells exposed to various concentrations of paclitaxel. The minimum number of cells used for detection was 15.25 × 105. At the same time, cell proliferation levels were assessed through proliferation assays and compared with the terahertz spectroscopy data. Results: The experimental results indicated that with the increasing concentration of paclitaxel, the terahertz absorbance spectra of HeLa cells exhibited a blue shift, and cell proliferation was significantly inhibited. The results of the proliferation assays were consistent with the terahertz spectroscopy data, validating the effectiveness of this method. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that the combination of THz spectroscopy and SPR biosensors is a promising technology that can provide a simple, rapid, and low-cost method for studying chemistry–biology relationships, especially in the field of drug evaluation. During the process of terahertz (THz) wave generation via femtosecond laser filamentation in air, as well as through the mixing of THz waves with externally injected plasma filaments, THz waves engage in interactions with the plasma. A characteristic feature of this interaction is the modulation of the THz radiation spectrum by the plasma, which includes the generation of THz spectral dips. This information is essential for understanding the underlying mechanisms of THz–plasma interactions or for inferring plasma parameters. However, a current debate exists on the number of THz spectral dips observed after the interaction, with different opinions of single versus multiple dips, thus leaving the interaction mechanisms still ambiguous. In this work, we retrospectively analyzed the experimental appearance of multiple dips in the THz spectrum and found that the current observations of such dips are predominantly a result of the water vapor absorption with a low spectral resolution. Additionally, we observed that altering the acquisition width of the temporal THz signal also influenced the dips' number. Hence, in future research, simultaneous attention should be paid to the following two aspects of THz–plasma interactions: (1) It is necessary to ensure a sufficiently wide time-domain window to accurately represent the spectral dip characteristics. (2) The spectral dips should be carefully distinguished from the water absorption lines before being further studied. On the other hand, for the case of a single dip in the THz spectrum, we also put forward a new viewpoint of the resonance between surface plasmon waves and THz waves, which should also be taken into consideration in future studies. In this study, we systematically investigate theoretically and experimentally the plasmonic effect and roles of big and small gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) within a mixed solution. The polydisperse solution was initially prepared by mixing small (10, 30 nm) Au NPs with larger ones (50, 80 nm), followed by measuring the extinction using ultraviolet–visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy. The experimental results clearly showed that the extinction of the mixed solution is predominantly influenced by the presence of the larger NPs, even though their quantity is small. Subsequently, we conducted simulations to explore the plasmonic properties of Au NPs of different sizes as well as their mixings and to validate the experimental results. To explain the deviation of the extinction spectra between experimental observations and simulations, we elaborated a simulation model involving the mixture of spherical Au NPs with ellipsoidal NPs, thus showing agreement between the simulation and the experiment. By performing simulations of plasmonic near-field of NPs, our investigation revealed that the maximal electric field intensity does not occur precisely at the plasmonic resonant wavelength but rather at a nearby redder wavelength. The optimal size of the Au NP dispersed in water for achieving the highest field enhancement was found to be 60 nm, with an excitation wavelength of 553.7 nm. Bacteria are capable of remarkable adaptations to their environment, including undesirable bacterial resistance to antibacterial agents. One of the most serious cases is an infection caused by multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, which has unfortunately also spread outside hospitals. Therefore, the development of new effective antibacterial agents is extremely important to solve the increasing problem of bacterial resistance. The bacteriolytic enzyme autolysin E (AtlE) is a promising new drug target as it plays a key role in the degradation of peptidoglycan in the bacterial cell wall. Consequently, disruption of function can have an immense impact on bacterial growth and survival. An in silico and in vitro evaluation of iminosugar derivatives as potent inhibitors of S. aureus (AtlE) was performed. Three promising hit compounds (1, 3 and 8) were identified as AtlE binders in the micromolar range as measured by surface plasmon resonance. Knowledge of the time of deposition is pivotal in forensic investigations. Recent studies show that changes in intrinsic fluorescence over time can be used to estimate the age of body fluids. These changes have been attributed to oxidative modifications caused by protein–lipid interactions. This pilot study aims to explore the impact of these modifications on body fluid fluorescence, enhancing the protein–lipid model system for age estimation. Lipid and protein oxidation markers, including protein carbonyls, dityrosine, advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), malondialdehyde (MDA), and 4-hydroxynonenal (HNE), were studied in aging semen, urine, and saliva over 21 days. Surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRi), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and fluorescence spectroscopy were applied. Successful detection of AGE, dityrosine, MDA, and HNE occurred in semen and saliva via SPRi, while only dityrosine was detected in urine. Protein carbonyls were measured in all body fluids, but only in saliva was a significant increase observed over time. Additionally, protein fluorescence loss and fluorescent oxidation product formation were assessed, showing significant decreases in semen and saliva, but not in urine. Although optimization is needed for accurate quantification, this study reveals detectable markers for protein and lipid oxidation in aging body fluids, warranting further investigation. This work explores the transformative role of graphene in enhancing the performance of surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-based biosensors. The motivation for this review stems from the growing interest in the unique properties of graphene, such as high surface area, excellent electrical conductivity, and versatile functionalization capabilities, which offer significant potential to improve the sensitivity, specificity, and stability of SPR biosensors. This review systematically analyzes studies published between 2010 and 2023, covering key metrics of biosensor performance. The findings reveal that the integration of graphene consistently enhances sensitivity. Specificity, although less frequently reported numerically, showed promising results, with high specificity achieved at sub-nanomolar concentrations. Stability enhancements are also significant, attributed to the protective properties of graphene and improved biomolecule adsorption. Future research should focus on mechanistic insights, optimization of integration techniques, practical application testing, scalable fabrication methods, and comprehensive comparative studies. Silver-based grating structures offer means for implementing low-cost, efficient grating couplers for use in surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors. One-dimensional grating structures with a fixed periodicity are confined to operate effectively within a single planar orientation. However, two-dimensional grating structures as well as grating structures with variable periodicity allow for the plasmon excitation angle to be seamlessly adjusted. This study demonstrates silver-based grating designs that allow for the plasmon excitation angle to be adjusted via rotation or beam position. The flexible angle adjustment opens up the possibility of developing SPR sensor designs with an expanded dynamic range and increased flexibility in sensing applications. The results demonstrate that efficient coupling into two diffraction orders is possible, which ultimately leads to an excitation angle range from 16° to 40° by rotating a single structure. Hematite (α -Fe2O3) is widely used in sensor sensitization due to its excellent optical properties. In this study, we present a sensitivity-enhanced surface plasmon resonance alcohol sensor based on Fe2O3/Au. We describe the fabrication process of the sensor and characterize its structure. We conduct performance testing on sensors coated multiple times and use solutions with the same gradient of refractive indices as the sensing medium. Within the refractive index range of 1.3335–1.3635, the sensor that was coated twice achieved the highest sensitivity, reaching 2933.2 nm/RIU. This represents a 30.26% enhancement in sensitivity compared to a sensor with a pure gold monolayer film structure. Additionally, we demonstrated the application of this sensor in alcohol concentration detection by testing the alcohol content of common beverages, showing excellent agreement with theoretical values and highlighting the sensor's potential in food testing. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a promising and highly sensitive molecular fingerprint detection technology. However, the development of SERS nanocomposites that are label-free, highly sensitive, selective, stable, and reusable for gaseous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) detection remains a challenge. Here, we report a novel TiO2NTs/AuNPs@ZIF−8 nanocomposite for the ultrasensitive SERS detection of VOCs. The three-dimensional TiO2 nanotube structure with a large specific surface area provides abundant sites for the loading of Au NPs, which possess excellent local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effects, further leading to the formation of a large number of SERS active hotspots. The externally wrapped porous MOF structure adsorbs more gaseous VOC molecules onto the noble metal surface. Under the synergistic mechanism of physical and chemical enhancement, a better SERS enhancement effect can be achieved. By optimizing experimental conditions, the SERS detection limit for acetophenone, a common exhaled VOC, is as low as 10−11 M. And the relative standard deviation of SERS signal intensity from different points on the same nanocomposite surface is 4.7%. The acetophenone gas achieves a 1 min response and the signal reaches stability in 4 min. Under UV irradiation, the surface-adsorbed acetophenone can be completely degraded within 40 min. The experimental results demonstrate that this nanocomposite has good detection sensitivity, repeatability, selectivity, response speed, and reusability, making it a promising sensor for gaseous VOCs. In this study, we pioneered the synthesis of nanoflower-shaped TiO2-supported Au photocatalysts and investigated their properties. Au nanoflowers (Au NFs) were prepared by a Na-citrate and hydroquinone-based preparation method, followed by wet impregnation of the derived Au NFs on the surface of TiO2 nanorods (TNR). A uniform and homogeneous distribution of Au NFs was observed in the TNR + NF(0.7) sample (lower Na-citrate concentration), while their distribution was heterogeneous in the TNR + NF(1.4) sample (higher Na-citrate concentration). The UV-Vis DR spectra revealed the size- and shape-dependent optical properties of the Au NFs, with the LSPR effect observed in the visible region. The solid-state EPR spectra showed the presence of Ti3+, oxygen vacancies and electron interactions with organic compounds on the catalyst surface. In the case of the TNR + NF(0.7) sample, high photocatalytic activity was observed in the H2-assisted reduction of NO2 to N2 at room temperature under visible-light illumination. In contrast, the TNR + NF(1.4) catalyst as well as the heat-treated samples showed no ability to reduce NO2 under visible light, indicating the presence of deformed Au NFs limiting the LSPR effect. Cancer is a threatening disease that needs strong therapy with fewer side effects. A lot of different types of chemotherapy or chemo-drugs are used in cancer treatments but have many side effects. The increasing number of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms requires more study of new antimicrobial compounds and delivery and targeting strategies. This work aims to isolate and identify Azotobacter sp., and extract alginate from Azotobacter sp. As well as fabricating selenium nanoparticles using ascorbic acid as reducing agent (As/Se-NPs), and loading extracted alginate with selenium nanoparticles (Alg-Se-NCMs). The As/Se-NPs and Alg-Se-NCMs were categorized by TEM, EDX, UV–Vis spectrophotometry, FT-IR, and zeta potential. The antifungal activities of both As/Se-NPs and Alg-Se-NCMs were investigated against some human pathogen fungi that cause skin infection such as Aspergillus niger (RCMB 002005), Aspergillus fumigatus (RCMB 002008), Cryptococcus neoformans (RCMB 0049001), Candida albicans (RCMB 005003), and Penicillium marneffei (RCMB 001002). The anticancer activities were determined against HCT-116 colorectal cancer and Hep G2 human liver cancer cells. UV spectra of As/Se-NPs and Alg-Se-NCMs confirmed a surface plasmon resonance at 269 and 296 nm, and zeta potential has negative charges −37.2 and −38.7 mV,. Both As/Se-NPs and Alg-Se-NCMs were hexagonal, size ranging from 16.52 to 97.06 and 17.29 to 44.2. Alg-Se-NCMs had anticancer activities against HCT-116 and HepG2. The Alg-Se-NCMs possessed the highest antifungal activities against Cryptococcus neoformans, followed by Aspergillus niger, but did not possess any activities against Penicillium marneffei. This work explores the use of ZIF-8, a metal–organic framework (MOF) material, for its use in the optical detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in Fabry–Pérot and surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-based sensors. The experiments have been carried out with ethanol (EtOH) and show response times as low as 30 s under VOC-saturated atmospheres, and the estimated limit of detection is below 4000 ppm for both sensor types. The selectivity towards other VOCs is relatively poor, although the dynamics of adsorption/desorption differ for each VOC and could be used for selectivity purposes. Furthermore, the hydrophobicity of ZIF-8 has been confirmed and the fabricated sensors are insensitive to this compound, which is a very attractive result for its practical use in gas sensing devices. To facilitate the sensor fabrication and sensing operation in microstructured optical fiber-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors for high refractive index (RI) detection, we propose a special hollow fiber-based SPR sensor that comprises an opening on its body side and a thin gold layer coated on its outer surface. The analyte is able to flow into the hollow core through the side-opening to form new fiber core, with the Gaussian-like mode propagating in it. We investigate the sensing performance of the proposed sensor in a higher RI range of 1.48 to 1.54 at two feasible schemes: one is to only fill the fiber core with analyte (Scheme A), and the other is to directly immerse the sensor in the analyte (Scheme B). The results demonstrate that our sensor exhibits higher wavelength sensitivity at Scheme A with a maximum wavelength sensitivity of 12,320 nm/RIU, while a greater amplitude sensitivity was found at Scheme B with a maximum amplitude sensitivity of 1146 RIU−1. Our proposed sensor features the advantages of simple fabrication, flexible operation, easy analyte filling and replacing, enhanced real-time detection capabilities, high RI detection, and very high wavelength sensitivity and amplitude sensitivity, which makes it more competitive in SPR sensing applications. Genomic surveillance based on sequencing the entire genetic code of SARS-CoV-2 involves monitoring and studying genetic changes and variations in disease-causing organisms such as viruses and bacteria. By tracing the virus, it is possible to prevent epidemic spread in the community, ensuring a 'precision public health' strategy. A peptide-based design was applied to provide an efficacious strategy that is able to counteract any emerging viral variant of concern dynamically and promptly to affect the outcomes of a pandemic at an early stage while waiting for the production of the anti-variant-specific vaccine, which require longer times. The inhibition of the interaction between the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and one of the cellular receptors (DPP4) that its receptors routinely bind to infect human cells is an intriguing therapeutic approach to prevent the virus from entering human cells. Among the other modalities developed for this purpose, peptides surely offer unique advantages, including ease of synthesis, serum stability, low immunogenicity and toxicity, and small production and distribution chain costs. Here, we obtained a potent new inhibitor based on the rearrangement of a previously identified peptide that has been rationally designed on a cell dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4) sequence, a ubiquitous membrane protein known to bind the RBD-SPIKE domain of the virus. This novel peptide (named DPP4-derived), conceived as an endogenous "drug", is capable of targeting the latest tested variants with a high affinity, reducing the VSV* DG-Fluc pseudovirus Omicron's infection capacity by up to 14%, as revealed by in vitro testing in human Calu-3 cells. Bimetallic nanomaterials have generated significant interest across diverse scientific disciplines, due to their unique and tunable properties arising from the synergistic combination of two distinct metallic elements. This study presents a novel approach for synthesizing branched gold–platinum nanoparticles by utilizing poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH)-stabilized branched gold nanoparticles, with a localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) response of around 1000 nm, as a template for platinum deposition. This approach allows precise control over nanoparticle size, the LSPR band, and the branching degree at an ambient temperature, without the need for high temperatures or organic solvents. The resulting AuPt branched nanoparticles not only demonstrate optical activity but also enhanced catalytic properties. To evaluate their catalytic potential, we compared the enzymatic capabilities of gold and gold–platinum nanoparticles by examining their peroxidase-like activity in the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). Our findings revealed that the incorporation of platinum onto the gold surface substantially enhanced the catalytic efficiency, highlighting the potential of these bimetallic nanoparticles in catalytic applications. Alternative recombinant sources of antivenoms have been successfully generated. The application of such strategies requires the characterization of the venoms for the development of specific neutralizing molecules against the toxic components. Five toxic peptides to mammals from the Mexican scorpion Centruroides villegasi were isolated by chromatographic procedures by means of gel filtration on Sephadex G-50, followed by ion-exchange columns on carboxy-methyl-cellulose (CMC) resins and finally purified by high-performance chromatography (HPLC) columns. Their primary structures were determined by Edman degradation. They contain 66 amino acids and are maintained well packed by four disulfide bridges, with molecular mass from 7511.3 to 7750.1 Da. They are all relatively toxic and deadly to mice and show high sequence identity with known peptides that are specific modifiers of the gating mechanisms of Na+ ion channels of type beta-toxin (β-ScTx). They were named Cv1 to Cv5 and used to test their recognition by single-chain variable fragments (scFv) of antibodies, using surface plasmon resonance. Three different scFvs generated in our laboratory (10FG2, HV, LR) were tested for recognizing the various new peptides described here, paving the way for the development of a novel type of scorpion antivenom. Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells represent a revolutionary immunotherapy that allows specific tumor recognition by a unique single-chain fragment variable (scFv) derived from monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). scFv selection is consequently a fundamental step for CAR construction, to ensure accurate and effective CAR signaling toward tumor antigen binding. However, conventional in vitro and in vivo biological approaches to compare different scFv-derived CARs are expensive and labor-intensive. With the aim to predict the finest scFv binding before CAR-T cell engineering, we performed artificial intelligence (AI)-guided molecular docking and steered molecular dynamics analysis of different anti-CD30 mAb clones. Virtual computational scFv screening showed comparable results to surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and functional CAR-T cell in vitro and in vivo assays, respectively, in terms of binding capacity and anti-tumor efficacy. The biomass filtrate of the endophytic bacterial strain Bacillus amyloliquefaciens Fa.2 was utilized for the eco-friendly production of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs). The yellowish-brown color's optical properties showed a maximum surface plasmon resonance at 415 nm. The morphological and elemental composition analysis reveals the formation of spherical shapes with sizes of 5–40 nm, and the Ag ion comprises the major component of the produced Ag-NPs. X-ray diffraction confirmed the crystalline structure, whereas dynamic light scattering reveals the high stability of synthesized Ag-NPs with a polydispersity index of 0.413 and a negative zeta potential value. The photocatalytic experiment showed the efficacy of Ag-NPs to degrade methylene blue with maximum percentages of 73.9 ± 0.5 and 87.4 ± 0.9% under sunshine and UV irradiation, respectively, compared with 39.8% under dark conditions after 210 min. Additionally, the reusability of Ag-NPs was still more active for the fifth run, with a percentage decrease of 11.6% compared with the first run. Interestingly, the biogenic Ag-NPs showed superior antimicrobial activity against different pathogenic Gram-negative bacteria (MIC = 6.25 µg mL−1), Gram-positive bacteria (MIC = 12.5 µg mL−1), and uni- and multicellular fungi (MIC = 12.5 µg mL−1). Moreover, the biosynthesized Ag-NPs could target cancer cells (Pc3 and Mcf7) at low concentrations compared with normal cell (Vero) lines. The IC50 of normal cells is 383.7 ± 4.1 µg mL−1 compared with IC50 Pc3 (2.5 ± 3.5 µg mL−1) and McF7 (156.1 ± 6.8 µg mL−1). Large-scale diffraction gratings were fabricated in surface relief on azobenzene thin films and transferred to flexible PDMS substrates using soft lift-off lithography. The PDMS gratings were strained along the grating vector axis and the resulting surface topography was analyzed using diffraction angle measurements, AFM imagery and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectra. All measurement methods exhibited a linear response in strain indicating the useability of these sensors in real-world applications. For SPR-based strain sensing, an increasing pitch and a decreasing modulation depth were observed with increasing strain. The SPR peak shifted by ~1.0 nm wavelength and the SPR intensity decreased by ~0.3 a.u. per percentage of applied strain. In this study, a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor based on modified plastic optical fibers (POFs) was combined with a specific molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP), used as a synthetic receptor, for glyphosate (GLY) determination in aqueous solutions. Since GLY is a non-selective herbicide associated with severe environmental and health problems, detecting glyphosate in environmental and biological samples remains challenging. Experimental results show that in about ten minutes and by dropping microliter volume samples, the presented optical–chemical sensor can quantify up to three orders of magnitude of GLY concentrations, from nanomolar to micromolar, due to a thin MIP layer over the SPR surface. The developed optical–chemical sensor presents a detection limit of about 1 nM and can be used for onsite GLY measurements. We designed a metamaterial far-infrared absorber based on an MDM (metal–dielectric–metal) structure. We made a hollow crossed Ti microstructure at the top of the absorber. It is known that the coupling effect of equipartitional exciton resonance and intrinsic absorption at the surface of the depleting material has a strong influence on the absorber. Based on this, we investigated the absorption characteristics of the absorber using the Finite Difference in Time Domain (FDTD) theory. The results show that the absorber absorbed more than 90% of the light within a bandwidth of 12.01 μm. The absorber has an average absorption of 94.08% in the longwave infrared (LWIR) to ultra-longwave infrared (UWIR) bands (10.90–22.91 μm). The polarization insensitivity of the designed absorber is demonstrated by analyzing the absorption spectra of the absorber at different polarization angles. By adjusting the relevant geometric parameters, the absorption spectrum can be independently adjusted. Furthermore, the absorber exhibits good incidence angle insensitivity in both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes. The absorbers are simple and easy to configure for applications such as optical cloaking, infrared heat emitters, and photodetectors. Cortisol is a clinically validated stress biomarker that takes part in many physiological and psychological functions related to the body's response to stress factors. In particular, it has emerged as a pivotal tool for understanding stress levels and overall well-being. Usually, in clinics, cortisol levels are monitored in blood or urine, but significant changes are also registered in sweat and saliva. In this work, a surface plasmon resonance probe based on a D-shaped plastic optical fiber was functionalized with a glucocorticoid receptor exploited as a highly efficient bioreceptor specific to cortisol. The developed plastic optical fiber biosensor was tested for cortisol detection in buffer and artificial saliva. The biosensor response showed very good selectivity towards other hormones and a detection limit of about 59 fM and 96 fM in phosphate saline buffer and artificial saliva, respectively. The obtained detection limit, with a rapid detection time (about 5 min) and a low-cost sensor system, paved the way for determining the cortisol concentration in saliva samples without any extraction process or sample pretreatment via a point-of-care test. Objective: The concentration of the placental circulating factor in early pregnancy is often extremely low, and the traditional prediction method cannot meet the clinical demand for early detection preeclampsia in high-risk gravida. It is of prime importance to seek an ultra-sensitive early prediction method. Methods: In this study, finite-different time-domain (FDTD) and Discrete Dipole Approximation (DDA) simulation, and electron beam lithography (EBL) methods were used to develop a bowtie nanoantenna (BNA) with the best field enhancement and maximum coupling efficiency. Bio-modification of the placental circulating factor (sFlt-1, PLGF) to the noble nanoparticles based on the amino coupling method were explored. A BNA LSPR biosensor which can specifically identify the placental circulating factor in preeclampsia was constructed. Results: The BNA LSPR biosensor can detect serum placental circulating factors without toxic labeling. Serum sFlt-1 extinction signal (Δλmax) in the preeclampsia group was higher than that in the normal pregnancy group (14.37 ± 2.56 nm vs. 4.21 ± 1.36 nm), p = 0.008, while the serum PLGF extinction signal in the preeclampsia group was lower than that in the normal pregnancy group (5.36 ± 3.15 nm vs. 11.47 ± 4.92 nm), p = 0.013. The LSPR biosensor detection results were linearly consistent with the ELISA kit. Conclusions: LSPR biosensor based on BNA can identify the serum placental circulating factor of preeclampsia with high sensitivity, without toxic labeling and with simple operation, and it is expected to be an early detection method for preeclampsia. In this work, a new surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor based on sulphur-doped titanium dioxide (S-TiO2) nanostructures and molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was presented for thiram (THI) determination in milk samples. Firstly, the S-TiO2 nanomaterial with a high product yield was prepared by using a facile sol-gel hydrolysis technique with a high product yield. After that, UV polymerization was carried out for the preparation of the THI-imprinted SPR chip based on S-TiO2 using a mixture including ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as the cross-linker, N,N′-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as the initiator, and methacryloylamidoglutamicacid (MAGA) as the monomer. The reliability of the sensor preparation procedure has been successfully proven by characterization studies of the prepared nanomaterials and SPR chip surfaces through spectroscopic, microscopic, and electrochemical methods. As a result, the prepared SPR sensor showed linearity in the range of 1.0 × 10−9–1.0 × 10−7 M with a detection limit (LOD) of 3.3 × 10−10 M in the real samples, and a sensor technique for THI determination with high sensitivity, repeatability, and selectivity can be included in the literature. This paper presents a polarizing beam splitter (PBS) based on a hexagonal lattice silver-filled photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with two silver wires, which possesses advantages such as a short splitting length, high extinction ratio (ER), and an ultra-wide bandwidth in commonly used communication bands. Utilizing the full-vector finite element method (FV-FEM), thorough investigations were conducted on lasers within the wavelength range of 1.1 to 1.9 μm. The PBS demonstrates a working bandwidth of 725 nm (1.14 to 1.865 μm) under an ultra-short splitting length of 55.3 μm, with an ER exceeding 20 dB, covering all bands of O + E + S + C + L + U optical communication, and achieving a maximum ER of 74.65 dB, where the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of silver metal plays a significant role. It not only features an ultra-short splitting length and an ultra-wide splitting bandwidth but also exhibits excellent manufacturing tolerances and anti-interference capabilities. Few-layer black phosphorus (FLBP) is a highly promising material for high sensitivity label-free surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors due to its exceptional electrical, optical, and mechanical properties. FLBP exhibits inherent anisotropy with different refractive indices along its two main crystal orientations, the zigzag and armchair axes. However, this anisotropic property is often overlooked in FLBP-based sensors. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive investigation of the SPR reflectivity and phase in a BK7-Ag-FLBP structure to understand the influence of the stacking sequence and the number of FLBP layers on the sensing performance. Clear resonant angle shifts caused by different stacking sequences of FLBP could be observed both theoretically and experimentally. In the theoretical study, the highest reflective and phase sensitivities were achieved with a 12-layer black phosphorus (BP) structure. The reflectivity sensitivity reached 287.9°/refractive index units (RIU) with the zz stacking 12-layer BP film exhibiting a sensitivity 76°/RIU higher than the ac stacking structure. Similarly, the phase sensitivity reached 1162°/RIU with the zz stacking 12-layer BP structure showing a sensitivity 276.9°/RIU higher than the ac stacking structure. The electric field distribution of the 12-layer BP structure with four different stacking sequences has also been analyzed. In the experiment study, the well-known Attenuated Total Reflection (ATR) θ − 2 θ SPR setup is utilized to detect the reflectivity and phase of BK7-Ag-FLBP structures. The FLBP samples with the same thickness but different stacking sequences show significant resonant angle shift (0.275°) and maximum phase difference variation (34.6°). The FLBP sample thickness and crystal orientations have been demonstrated using the angular-resolved polarized Raman spectroscopy (ARPRS). These theoretical and experimental results provide strong evidence that the stacking sequences of FLBP have a significant impact on the sensing performance of SPR sensors. By harnessing the anisotropic properties of materials like FLBP, novel structures of anisotropic-2D material-based SPR sensors could open up exciting possibilities for innovative applications. The rapid development of the battery industry has brought about a large amount of waste battery pollution. How to realize the high-value utilization of waste batteries is an urgent problem to be solved. Herein, cobalt and titanium compounds (LTCO) were firstly recovered from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) using the carbon thermal reduction approach, and plasmonic attapulgite/Co(Ti)Ox (H-ATP/Co(Ti)Ox) nanocomposites were prepared by the microwave hydrothermal technique. H-ATP had a large specific surface area and enough active sites to capture CO2 molecules. The biochar not only reduced the spinel phase of waste LIBs into metal oxides including Co3O4 and TiO2 but also increased the separation and transmission of the carriers, thereby accelerating the adsorption and reduction of CO2. In addition, H-ATP/Co(Ti)Ox exhibited a localized surface plasmon resonance effect (LSPR) in the visible to near-infrared region and released high-energy hot electrons, enhancing the surface temperature of the catalyst and further improving the catalytic reduction of CO2 with a high CO yield of 14.7 μmol·g−1·h−1. In this study, we report the successful development of a novel high-sensitivity intensity-based Surface Plasmon Resonance imaging (SPRi) biosensor and its application for detecting molecular interactions. By optimizing the excitation wavelength and employing a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) algorithm, the system can determine the optimal excitation wavelength based on the initial refractive index of the sample without adjusting the incidence angle. The experimental results demonstrate that the refractive index resolution of the system reaches 1.77 × 10 − 6 RIU. Moreover, it can obtain the optimal excitation wavelength for samples with an initial refractive index in the range of 1.333 to 1.370 RIU and accurately monitor variations within the range of 0.0037 RIU without adjusting the incidence angle. Additionally, our new SPRi technique realized real-time detection of high-throughput biomolecular binding processes, enabling analysis of kinetic parameters. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) can be produced safely and greenly using water hyacinth, an invasive aquatic plant, as a reducing agent. This study aimed to optimize the UV-irradiation parameters for the synthesis of AgNPs from water hyacinth leaf extract. The study varied the reaction time and pH levels and added a stabilizing agent to the mixture. The synthesized AgNPs were characterized using UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The findings revealed that the optimal conditions for synthesizing AgNPs were achieved by adjusting the pH level to 8.5, adding starch as a stabilizing agent, and exposing the mixture to UV-A radiation for one hour. These conditions resulted in the smallest size and highest quantity of AgNPs. Furthermore, the synthesized AgNP colloids remained stable for up to six months. This study highlights the potential of utilizing water hyacinth as a sustainable and cost-effective reducing agent for AgNP synthesis, with potential applications in pharmaceuticals, drug development, catalysis, and sensing detection. The beta-galactoside-binding mammalian lectin galectin-1 can bind, via its carbohydrate recognition domain (CRD), to various cell surface glycoproteins and has been implicated in a range of cancers. As a consequence of binding to sugar residues on cell surface receptors, it has been shown to have a pleiotropic effect across many cell types and mechanisms, resulting in immune system modulation and cancer progression. As a result, it has started to become a therapeutic target for both small and large molecules. In previous studies, we used fluorescence polarization (FP) assays to determine KD values to screen and triage small molecule glycomimetics that bind to the galectin-1 CRD. In this study, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) was used to compare human and mouse galectin-1 affinity measures with FP, as SPR has not been applied for compound screening against this galectin. Binding affinities for a selection of mono- and di-saccharides covering a 1000-fold range correlated well between FP and SPR assay formats for both human and mouse galectin-1. It was shown that slower dissociation drove the increased affinity at human galectin-1, whilst faster association was responsible for the effects in mouse galectin-1. This study demonstrates that SPR is a sound alternative to FP for early drug discovery screening and determining affinity estimates. Consequently, it also allows association and dissociation constants to be measured in a high-throughput manner for small molecule galectin-1 inhibitors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
