Warming and drying trends in the Mediterranean Basin exacerbate regional water scarcity and threaten agricultural production, putting global food security at risk. This study aimed to review the most significant research on future water availability for the Mediterranean agricultural sector under climate change (CC) scenarios published during 2009–2024. Two searches were performed in the Scopus and Web of Science databases, to which previously identified significant studies from different periods were also added. By applying a methodology duly protocoled in the PRISMA2020-based guideline, a final number of 44 particularly relevant studies was selected for review. A bibliometric analysis has shown that most of the published research was focused on Southwestern European countries (i.e., Spain, Italy, Portugal) and grapevine and olive tree crops. Overall, the reviewed studies state that future Mediterranean water reserves may not meet agricultural water demands, due to reduced reservoir inflows and higher irrigation demands under future CC and socioeconomic scenarios. Regarding adaptation measures to improve water-use management in agriculture, the majority of the reviewed studies indicate that the use of integrated modelling platforms and decision–support systems can significantly contribute to the development and implementation of improved water/land-management practices. As a geological barrier for high-level radioactive waste (HLW) disposal in China, granite is crucial for blocking nuclide migration into the biosphere. However, the high uncertainty associated with the 3D geological system, such as the stochastic discrete fracture networks in granite, significantly impedes practical safety assessments of HLW disposal. This study proposes a Monte Carlo simulation (MCS)-based simulation framework for evaluating the long-term barrier performance of nuclide migration in fractured rocks. Statistical data on fracture geometric parameters, on-site hydrogeological conditions, and relevant migration parameters are obtained from a research site in Northwestern China. The simulation models consider the migration of three key nuclides, Cs-135, Se-79, and Zr-93, in fractured granite, with mechanisms including adsorption, advection, diffusion, dispersion, and decay considered as factors. Subsequently, sixty MCS realizations are performed to conduct a sensitivity analysis using the open-source software OpenGeoSys-5 (OGS-5). The results reveal the maximum and minimum values of the nuclide breakthrough time Tt (12,000 and 3600 years, respectively) and the maximum and minimum values of the nuclide breakthrough concentration Cmax (4.26 × 10−4 mSv/a and 2.64 × 10−5 mSv/a, respectively). These significant differences underscore the significant effect of the uncertainty in the discrete fracture network model on long-term barrier performance. After the failure of the waste tank (1000 years), nuclides are estimated to reach the outlet boundary 6480 years later. The individual effective dose in the biosphere initially increases and then decreases, reaching a peak value of Cmax = 4.26 × 10−4 mSv/a around 350,000 years, which is below the critical dose of 0.01 mSv/a. These sensitivity analysis results concerning nuclide migration in discrete fractured granite can enhance the simulation and prediction accuracy for risk evaluation of HLW disposal. Accurately characterizing rainfall runoff processes in plain farmland, especially at the plot scale with significant micro-topographic features, has presented challenges. Integrated surface–subsurface flow models with high-precision surface flow modules are appropriate tools, yet open-source versions are rare. To address this gap, we proposed an open-source integrated surface–subsurface flow model called the FullSWOF-Plain model, in which the one-dimensional subsurface module Hydrus-1D was integrated with a modified two-dimensional surface water flow module (FullSWOF-2D) using the sequential head method. Various experimental scenarios were simulated to validate the model's performance, including two outflow cases (i.e., 1D and 2D) without infiltration, a classical one-dimensional infiltration case, and two typical rainfall events at the experimental field. The results demonstrate the accuracy of this proposed model, with the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) of the simulated discharge exceeding 0.90 in the experimental field case and the root mean squared error (RMSE) values for soil moisture at five depths consistently below 0.03 cm3/cm3. However, we observed a lag in the simulated response time of soil moisture due to the neglect of preferential flow. The micro-topography significantly influenced ponding time and ponding areas. Lower local terrain normally experienced earlier surface ponding. Scattered surface ponding water first occurred in the ditch and followed in the relatively low areas in the main field. The concentration process of surface runoff exhibited hierarchical characteristics, with the drainage ditch contributing the most discharge initially, followed by the connection of scattered puddles in the main field, draining excess surface water to the ditch through rills. The authors hope that this paper will be very useful for future modelers, stakeholders, and scientists, and will help them to select the most appropriate tools or to create new models. The pollution of groundwater and soil by hydrocarbons is a significant and growing global problem. Efforts to mitigate and minimise pollution risks are often based on modelling. Modelling-based solutions for prediction and control play a critical role in preserving dwindling water resources and facilitating remediation. The objectives of this article are to: (i) to provide a concise overview of the mechanisms that influence the migration of hydrocarbons in groundwater and to improve the understanding of the processes that affect contamination levels, (ii) to compile the most commonly used models to simulate the migration and fate of hydrocarbons in the subsurface; and (iii) to evaluate these solutions in terms of their functionality, limitations, and requirements. The aim of this article is to enable potential users to make an informed decision regarding the modelling approaches (deterministic, stochastic, and hybrid) and to match their expectations with the characteristics of the models. The review of 11 1D screening models, 18 deterministic models, 7 stochastic tools, and machine learning experiments aimed at modelling hydrocarbon migration in the subsurface should provide a solid basis for understanding the capabilities of each method and their potential applications. Microplastics (MPs), defined as plastic particles measuring less than 5 mm, are considered an emerging pollutant. Their presence in the water cycle and their interaction with ecological processes pose a significant environmental threat. As groundwater (GW) represents the primary source of drinking water, monitoring MPs in GW and investigating their potential sources and pathways is of urgent importance. This article offers a comprehensive overview of the primary contamination pathways of MPs from surface water, seawater, and soil into the GW. Moreover, it presents an examination of the occurrence of MPs in GW and identifies the challenges associated with their monitoring in GW. This study also discusses the difficulties associated with comparing research results related to MPs in GW, as well as indicating the need for implementing standardised techniques for their sampling and detection. On the basis of our experience and the literature review, we highlight the importance of understanding the specific hydrogeological and hydrogeographic conditions, collecting representative samples, using sampling devices with comparable specifications and comparable laboratory techniques for MP identification, and preventing contamination at all stages of the monitoring process. The efficient management and remediation of contaminated fractured aquifers necessitate an accurate prediction of the spatial distribution of contaminant concentration within the system. Related existing analytical solutions are only applicable to single fractures and have not yet been extrapolated to the aquifer scale where a network of connected fractures exists. The Random Walk Particle Tracking (RWPT) method has been extensively adopted for concentration mapping in Discrete Fracture Networks (DFNs), albeit at exorbitant computational costs and without efficiently accommodating complex physical processes (e.g., two-site kinetics). This study introduces an analytically enhanced Spatiotemporal Random Walk (STRW) approach that facilitates the efficient time-dependent mapping of contaminant concentration in DFNs. The STRW approach employs a distribution function to simultaneously estimate the displacement of particles released through the system either instantaneously or over time. The STRW approach efficiently reproduced the contaminant concentration, calculated using available analytical solutions under a range of fate and transport mechanisms. The efficacy of the STRW approach is also confirmed in a synthetic impermeable DFN through replicating the concentration maps produced using the RWPT method. The developed approach represents an accurate and computationally efficient dynamic concentration mapping technique that can support the effective operation, management, and remediation of fractured aquifers under contamination events. One of the modern, recently developed mathematical approaches for modeling various complex chaotic processes (the bacteria migration is apparently one of them), is the application of fractional differential equations. Introduction of fractional derivatives is also a very effective approach for investigation of the reactive processes (growth of bacteria in our case). Our recent advances in application of fractional differential equations for modeling the anomalous transport of reactive and non-reactive contaminants (see our recent publications in the References) allow us to expect that the anomalous transport of growing bacteria can also be effectively described by the models with fractional derivatives. Based on these modern approaches, utilizing fractional differential equations, in this paper we developed a reliable mathematical model that could be properly calibrated and, consequently, provide an adequate description of the growing bacteria transport. This model accounts for the memory effects in the bacteria transport due to the random character of bacteria trapping and release by the porous matrix. Two types of bacteria in the saturated porous medium are considered: mobile and immobile bacteria. Bacteria in the mobile phase are migrating in the fluid and have the velocity of the bulk flow, whereas bacteria in the immobile phase are the bacteria that are captured by the porous matrix. These bacteria have zero velocity and can cause clogging of some pores (therefore, porosity is possibly not constant). Examining different conventional models and comparing computations based on these models, we show that this extremely complex character of bacteria transport cannot be described by the traditional approach based on classical partial differential equations. In this paper we suggest fractional differential equations as a simple but very effective tool that can be used for constructing the proper model capable of simulating all the above-mentioned effects associated with migration of alive bacteria. Using this approach, a reliable model of the growing bacteria transport in the porous medium is developed and validated by comparison with experimental laboratory results. We proved that this novel model can be properly linearized and calibrated, so that an excellent agreement with available experimental results can be achieved. This simple model can be used in many applications, for example, as a part of more general mathematical models for predicting the outcomes of the bioremediation of contaminated soils. The soil freezing characteristic curve (SFCC) describes the relationship between the freezing point and unfrozen water content, which are two critical parameters in depicting the heat, solute, and water transport in frozen soil. In this paper, we propose a novel Generalized Clapeyron Equation (GCE)-based model, the GCE-Salt Model, to better capture the SFCC in frozen soil in the presence of solute. It keeps the matric potential Ψf in the GCE as its original meaning and incorporates the effect of solute potential in the equilibrium freezing temperature. The performance of our GCE-Salt Model was validated by both lab and field experimental data and compared with related models (Combined Model and GCE-Tan Model). The GCE-Salt Model performed exceptionally well in extremely saline soil and it performed well in both non-saline and saline soil. (1) Our GCE-Salt Model could capture the SFCC of non-saline soil equally as well as the Combined Model (NSE = 0.866); (2) our GCE-Salt Model performed similarly well as the Combined Model and a little better than the GCE-Tan Model for the slightly to highly saline soil (NSE ≥ 0.80 for three models); and (3) our GCE-Salt Model (NSE = 0.919) beat the Combined Model (NSE = 0.863) and the GCE-Tan Model (NSE = 0.62) in capturing the SFCC of extremely saline soil, mainly because the inherent expression of our GCE-Salt Model can more accurately capture the freezing point. Our findings highlight the effect of solute potential on the ice–water change and could improve the understanding of the effect of freezing and thawing on the thermal–hydrological processes, structure of saline soil, and landscape evolution in cold regions. Global warming and extreme climate events (ECEs) have grown more frequent, and it is essential to investigate the influences of ECEs on vegetation in the Yellow River Basin (YRB) and other environmentally fragile areas. This study was based on data from 86 meteorological stations in the YRB for the period 2000–2020. Twenty-five extreme climate indices (ECIs) were chosen, encompassing four dimensions: extreme value, intensity, duration, and frequency. The trend analysis approach was used to examine the spatiotemporal characteristics of extreme climate conditions. Additionally, geographical detectors and Pearson correlation analysis methods were employed to quantitatively assess the influence of ECEs on the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). The Multiscale Geographically Weighted Regression (MGWR) method was adopted to analyze the regression of twenty-five ECIs. The findings revealed the following: (1) Over the last 21 years, there has been a distinct rise in both the extreme precipitation indices (EPIs) and the extreme temperature indices (ETIs). (2) The spatial distribution of the NDVI throughout the year displayed the characteristic of being high in the south and low in the north. The annual NDVI demonstrated a noteworthy increase at a rate of 0.055/decade, with the enhancement encompassing an extensive area of 87.33%. (3) The investigation revealed that EPIs, including PRCPTOT, R10mm, CWD, R95p, and CDD, had explanatory values surpassing 0.4. This implied that the intensity, frequency, and duration of extreme precipitation played pivotal roles in steering vegetation alterations in the YRB. (4) The correlation between the EPIs and vegetation was greater than the ETIs. Grassland meadows exhibited greater sensitivity to precipitation than woody plants. The EPIs (excluding CDD and SDII) and the ETIs (TXn) displayed a substantial positive correlation with the NDVI in regions hosting grasslands, broadleaf forests, and shrubs. Desert vegetation and cultivated plants were less affected by ECEs. This study underscores the importance of the interplay between extreme climate and vegetation in the YRB. Bioventing is an established technique extensively employed in the remediation of soil contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons. In this study, the objective was to develop an improved foundational bioventing model that characterizes gas flow in vadose zones where aqueous and non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) are present and immobile, accounting for interphase mass transfer and first order biodegradation kinetics. By incorporating a correlation for the biodegradation rate constant, which is a function of soil properties including initial population of petroleum degrader microorganisms in soil, sand content, clay content, water content, and soil organic matter content, this model offers the ability to integrate a specific biodegradation rate constant tailored to the soil properties for each site. The governing equations were solved using the finite volume method in OpenFOAM employing the "porousMultiphaseFoam v2107" (PMF) toolbox. The equation describing gas flow in unsaturated soil was solved using a mixed pressure-saturation method, where calculated values were employed to solve the component transport equations. Calibration was done against a set of experimental data for a meso-scale reactor considering contaminant volatilization rate as the pre-calibration parameter and the mass transfer coefficient between aqueous and NAPL phase as the main calibration parameter. The calibrated model then was validated by simulating a large-scale reactor. The modelling results showed an error of 2.9% for calibrated case and 4.7% error for validation case which present the fitness to the experimental data, proving that the enhanced bioventing model holds the potential to improve predictions of bioventing and facilitate the development of efficient strategies to remediate soil contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons. Water scarcity is a significant challenge in China, and the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP) aims to address the water deficit in the northern region. This study analyses Landsat 5/7/8 remote sensing imagery from 2001 to 2020 on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud platform to assess the impact of the SNWDP on surface water bodies in water-receiving areas. Moreover, by integrating MODIS evapotranspiration data and ERA5 meteorological reanalysis data, this study comprehensively assesses the SNWDP's contribution to varied surface water body changes. Using an improved multi-temporal water frequency method, this study extracts max, seasonal, and year-long water surface areas. The results reveal that Beijing and Henan provinces have experienced significant increases in water surface areas post-SNWDP, with their max water surface area growing at a rate of 10.42 km2/yr and 33.49 km2/year, respectively. However, water surface areas in several provinces, especially those along the east route, were not observed to increase. The spatially detailed Mann–Kendall test indicates that the expansion of year-long water bodies is mostly concentrated near the central route project, revealing spatial heterogeneity in the water replenishment effect. Cropland and impervious surfaces are the main contributors to transfers in and out of water bodies. Meteorological and water use factors for spatial variations in water changes are also identified. These findings provide insights into the varied hydrological consequences of the SNWDP and contribute to the evaluation and management of similar large-scale water diversion projects around the world. Earth system models (ESMs) are important tools for assessing the historical characteristics and predicting the future characteristics of precipitation, yet the quantitative understanding of how these land–atmospheric coupling models perform in simulating precipitation characteristics remains limited. This study conducts a comprehensive evaluation of precipitation changes simulated by 43 ESMs in CMIP5 and 32 ESMs in CMIP6 in Arid Central Asia (ALL) and its two sub-regions for 1959–2005 with reference to Climate Research Unit (CRU) data, and predicts precipitation changes for 2054–2100. Our analyses suggest the following: (a) no single model consistently outperformed the others in all aspects of simulated precipitation variability (annual averages, long-term trends, and climatological monthly patterns); (b) the CMIP5 and CMIP6 model simulations tended to overestimate average annual precipitation for most of the ALL region, especially in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China (XJ); (c) most model simulations projected a stronger increasing trend in average annual precipitation; (d) although all the model simulations reasonably captured the climatological monthly precipitation, there was an underestimation; (e) compared to CMIP5, most CMIP6 model simulations exhibited an enhanced capacity to simulate precipitation across all aspects, although discrepancies persisted in individual sub-regions; (f) it was confirmed that the multi-model ensemble mean (MME) provides a more accurate representation of the three aspects of precipitation compared to the majority of single-model simulations. Lastly, the values of precipitation predicted by the more efficient models across the ALL region and its sub-regions under the different scenarios showed an increasing trend in most seasons. The maintenance of water-retaining structures involves evaluating their performance against current and future operating water levels. Fragility curves are commonly used for this purpose, as they indicate the conditional probability of failure for various load conditions and accurately characterize a structure's performance. Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) can be used to determine the fragility curve of water-retaining structures by calculating the probability of failure as the water level changes. However, performing repetitive MCS involves extensive calculations, thus making it inefficient for practical applications. Therefore, it is essential to develop efficient methods that require a minimum number of MCS runs to estimate the fragility curve. This study proposed two methods to estimate the fragility curves of water-retaining structures, thereby allowing for the assessment of failure probabilities related to important quantities such as the steady-state seepage rate, exit gradient, and uplift force, which make them suitable for practical applications. The fragility curves obtained using the proposed methods are valuable for risk assessment, design, and decision-making purposes, as they offer information to evaluate the performance of the water-retaining structure under various water level conditions. In this study, the effects of topological properties with local variable apertures on fluid flow and solute transport through three-dimensional (3D) discrete fracture networks (DFNs) were investigated. A series of 3D DFNs with different fracture density, length, and aperture distribution were generated. The fluid flow and solute transport through the models were simulated by combining the MATLAB code and COMSOL Multiphysics. The effects of network topology and aperture heterogeneity on fluid flow and transport process were analyzed. The results show that the fluid flow and solute transport exhibit a strong channeling effect even in the DFNs with identical aperture, in which the areas of fast and slow migration fit well with the high- and low-flow regions, respectively. More obvious preferential paths of flow and migration are observed in individual fractures for the DFN with heterogeneous aperture than the model with identical aperture. Increasing the fracture length exponent reduces the available flow and transport paths for sparse fracture networks but does not significantly change the flow and transport channels for dense fracture networks. The breakthrough curves (BTCs) shift towards the right and slightly lag behind as the fracture density decreases or the aperture heterogeneity increases. The advection–diffusion equation (ADE) model cannot properly capture the evolution of BTCs for 3D DFNs, especially the long tails of BTCs. Compared to the ADE model, the mobile-immobile model (MIM) model separating the liquid phase into flowing and stagnate regions is proven to better fit the BTCs of 3D DFNs with heterogeneous aperture. Groundwater is essential to residents, ecology, agriculture, and industry. The depletion of groundwater impacted by climatic variability and intense human activities could threaten water, food, and socioeconomic security in arid regions. A thorough understanding of groundwater level dynamics and its response to land-cover change is necessary for groundwater management and ecosystem improvement, which are poorly understood in arid desert regions due to a scarcity of field monitoring data. In our study, spatiotemporal characteristics of groundwater level impacted by land-cover change and its relationship with vegetation were examined using 3-years in-situ monitoring data of 30 wells in the desert regions of Tarim Basin during 2019–2021. The results showed that the depth to groundwater level (DGL) exhibited obvious spatial and seasonal variations, and the fluctuation of DGL differed significantly among the wells. The cultivated land area increased by 1174.6, 638.0, and 732.2 km2 during 2000–2020 in the plains of Yarkand, Weigan-Kuqa, and Dina Rivers, respectively, mainly transferring from bare land and grassland. Annual average Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values increased with time during the period in the plains. DGL generally exhibited a weakly increasing trend from 2019 to 2021, mainly due to human activities. Land-cover change significantly affected the groundwater level dynamic. Generally, the groundwater system was in negative equilibrium near the oasis due to agricultural irrigation, was basically in dynamic equilibrium in the desert region, and was in positive equilibrium near the Tarim River Mainstream due to irrigation return water and streamflow. NDVI of natural desert vegetation was negatively correlated with DGL in the desert regions (R2 = 0.78, p < 0.05). Large-scale land reclamation and groundwater overexploitation associated with water-saving irrigation agriculture development have caused groundwater level decline in arid oasis-desert regions. Hence, controlling groundwater extraction intensity, strengthening groundwater monitoring, and promoting water-saving technology would be viable methods to sustainably manage groundwater and maintain the ecological environment in arid areas. Partitioning evapotranspiration (ET) into vegetation transpiration (T) and soil evaporation (E) is challenging, but it is key to improving the understanding of plant water use and changes in terrestrial ecosystems. Considering that the transpiration of vegetation at night is minimal and can be negligible, we established a machine learning model (i.e., extreme gradient boosting algorithm (XGBoost)) for soil evaporation estimation based on night-time evapotranspiration observation data from eddy covariance towers, remote sensing data, and meteorological reanalysis data. Daytime T was consequently calculated as the difference between the total evapotranspiration and predicted daytime soil evaporation. The soil evaporation estimation model was validated based on the remaining night-time ET data (i.e., model test dataset), the non-growing season ET data of the natural ecosystem, and ET data during the fallow periods of croplands. The validation results showed that XGBoost had a better performance in E estimation, with the average overall accuracy of NSE 0.657, R 0.806, and RMSE 11.344 W/m2. The average annual T/ET of the examined ten ecosystems was 0.50 ± 0.08, with the highest value in deciduous broadleaf forests (0.68 ± 0.11), followed by mixed forests (0.61 ± 0.04), and the lowest in croplands (0.40 ± 0.08). We further examined the impact of the leaf area index (LAI) and vapor pressure deficit (VPD) on the variation in T/ET. Overall, at the interannual scale, LAI contributed 28% to the T/ET variation, while VPD had a small (5%) influence. On a seasonal scale, LAI also exerted a stronger impact (1~90%) on T/ET compared to VPD (1~77%). Our study suggests that the XGBoost machine learning model has good performance in ET partitioning, and this method is mainly data-driven without prior knowledge, which may provide a simple and valuable method in global ET partitioning and T/ET estimation. Accurate prediction of future streamflow in flood-prone regions is crucial for effective flood management and disaster mitigation. This study presents an innovative approach for streamflow projections in deep learning (DL) environment by integrating the quantitative Land-Use Land-Cover (LULC) overlaid with flow accumulation values and the various Global Climate Model (GCM) simulated data. Firstly, the Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) model was developed for the streamflow prediction of Greater Pamba River Basin (GPRB) in Kerala, India for 1985 to 2015 period, considering the climatic inputs. Then, the flow accumulation-weighted LULC integration was considered in modelling, which substantially improves the accuracy of streamflow predictions including the extremes of all the three stations, as the model accounts for the geographical variety of land cover types towards the streamflow at the sub-basin outlets. Subsequently, Reliability Ensemble Averaging (REA) technique was used to create an ensemble of three candidate GCM products to illustrate the spectrum of uncertainty associated with climate projections. Future LULC changes are accounted in regional scale based on the sub-basin approach by means of Cellular-Automata Markov Model and used for integrating with the climatic indices. The basin-scale streamflow projection is done under three climate scenarios of SSP126, SSP245 and SSP585 respectively for lowest, moderate and highest emission conditions. This work is a novel approach of integrating quantified LULC with flow accumulation and other climatic inputs in a DL environment against the conventional techniques of hydrological modelling. The DL model can adapt and account for shifting hydrological responses induced by changes in climatic and LULC inputs. The integration of flow accumulation with changes in LULC was successful in capturing the flow dynamics in long-term. It also identifies regions that are more likely to experience increased flooding in the near future under changing climate scenarios and supports decision-making for sustainable water management of the Greater Pamba Basin which was the worst affected region in Kerala during the mega floods of 2018. Naturally fractured reservoirs are characterized by their complex nature due to the existence of natural fractures and fissures within the rock formations. These fractures can significantly impact the flow of fluids within the reservoir, making it difficult to predict and manage production. Therefore, efficient production from such reservoirs requires a deep understanding of the flow behavior via the integration of various geological, geophysical, and engineering data. Additionally, advanced simulation models can be used to predict reservoir behavior under different production scenarios and aid in decision making and effective management. Accordingly, this study presents a robust mathematical two-phase fluid flow model (FRACSIM) for the simulation of the flow behavior of naturally fractured reservoirs in a 3D space. The mathematical model is based on the finite element technique and implemented using the FORTRAN language within a poro-elastic framework. Fractures are represented by triangle elements, while tetrahedral elements represent the matrix. To optimize computational time, short to medium-length fractures adopt the permeability tensor approach, while large fractures are discretized explicitly. The governing equations for poro-elasticity are discretized in both space and time using a standard Galerkin-based finite element approach. The stability of the saturation equation solution is ensured via the application of the Galerkin discretization method. The 3D fracture model has been verified against Eclipse 100, a commercial software, via a well-test case study of a fractured basement reservoir to ensure its effectiveness. Additionally, the FRACSIM software successfully simulated a laboratory glass bead drainage test for two intersected fractures and accurately captured the flow pattern and cumulative production results. Furthermore, a sensitivity study of water injection using an inverted five-spot technique was tested on FRACSIM to assess the productivity of drilled wells in complex fractured reservoirs. To remove contaminants from a layered heterogeneous porous system where the flow direction is parallel to the horizontal layering, the flushing front may advance faster in one layer than the other, resulting in a significant vertical concentration gradient across the layer interface. This gradient leads to mass exchange between the layers due to the vertical dispersive transport. Such a mass exchange phenomenon can greatly alter the mass (and heat if the temperature is a concern) distribution in a multi-layer porous media system but has never been investigated before in a quantitative manner. In this study, high-resolution finite-element numerical models have been employed to investigate how transport properties affect contaminant transport during flushing, using a two-layer system as an example. The results showed that the porosity and retardation factor play similar roles in affecting mass flux across the interface. Increasing the porosity (or retardation factor) of one layer with a faster flushing velocity would decrease the total mass flux across the interface of the layers, while increasing the porosity (or retardation factor) of the layer with a slower flushing velocity played an adverse influence. Furthermore, increasing the transverse dispersivity of any layer increased the mass flux across the interface of the two layers. However, changes in the transverse dispersivity did not affect the spatial range (or gap along the flow direction) in which significant vertical mass flux occurs. The rich biodiversity in the floodplain area is influenced by both floodplain floods and groundwater (GW). To protect the ecological environment in the floodplain area, it is essential to study the interaction between floodplain floods and GW. The objective of this paper is to propose a coupling strategy between a hydrodynamic model and a GW model to provide an accurate simulation tool for quantifying the interaction between floodplain floods and GW. The case study is conducted in the floodplain area of the middle reaches of the Irtysh River in northwest China. Firstly, a two-dimensional hydrodynamic model based on TELEMAC-2D is constructed to accurately simulate floodplain floods under wetting and drying conditions. Secondly, a GW model based on MODFLOW is developed. Finally, a coupling strategy is proposed to achieve accurate and efficient integration between the hydrodynamic model and the GW model. The calibration and verification results of the model demonstrate high accuracy, with root mean squared error (RMSE) values of 0.51 m and 0.77 m between observed and calculated GW levels for the hydrodynamic–GW coupled model. The water balance results indicate that floodplain floods serve as the largest GW recharge source in the study area, while phreatic evaporation is the primary GW discharge item. This paper represents a novel attempt to couple a two-dimensional hydrodynamic model with a GW model. The research results provide a scientific tool for the ecological restoration of floodplain areas considering both surface water and GW, as well as the comprehensive management and regulation of wetland water resources and the water environment. Tritium waste deposition in air-unsaturated groundwater zones poses great challenges to optimal water allocation. This paper reviews the research progress of air-unsaturated-groundwater interaction. Traditional interaction studies typically model the fate and migration of pollutants in different regions. This can lead to biased results and simulation errors. The development of air-unsaturated-ground integrated modeling will be a breakthrough and a hotspot in tritium management. In this paper, the fate and migration of tritium leakage is further studied using the existing extended Environment Multimedia Modeling System (EEMMS). Moreover, to better understand its distribution in three zones, using tritium as a typical pollutant, it is necessary to consider its characteristics in different zones, especially its migration from unsaturated zones to groundwater and air zones. The result shows that the tritiated water vapor transfer in unsaturated groundwater areas decreases and part of the tritiated water vapor transfers to atmospheric areas as tritiated gas vapor. Compared with the analytical test accuracy (5 pCi mL−1), the accuracy of the tritium modeling using the finite element method can reach the minimum concentration limit of 0 pCi mL−1. Recovering the past movement of a contaminant plume from measurements of its current values is a challenging problem in hydrology. Moreover, modeling the movement of a contaminant plume backwards is an ill-posed problem due to the unstable and non-unique nature of the resulting solution. Therefore, standard numerical methods become unstable, making it impossible to simulate existing contaminant transport models with reversed time. This paper presents two major contributions to solve the backward problem. Firstly, a stable and consistent numerical method based on an operator-splitting concept which is effective in tracking back the contaminant movement, and secondly, an optimal condition for the choice of mesh width that enables the error during computer simulation to stay within a reasonable bound. In this study, we present artificial neural networks (ANNs) to aid in a reconnaissance evaluation of an aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) well. Recovery effectiveness (REN) is the proportion of ASR-injected water recovered during subsequent extraction from the same well. ANN-based predictors allow rapid REN prediction without requiring preparation for and execution of solute transport simulations. REN helps estimate blended water quality resulting from a conservative solute in an aquifer, extraction for environmental protection, and other uses, respectively. Assume that into an isotropic homogenous portion of an unconfined, one-layer aquifer, extra surface water is injected at a steady rate during two wet months (61 days) through a fully penetrating ASR well. And then, water is extracted from the well at the same steady rate during three dry months (91-day period of high demand). The presented dimensionless input parameters were designed to be calibrated within the ANNs to match REN values. The values result from groundwater flow and solute transport simulations for ranges of impact factors of unconfined aquifers. The ANNs calibrated the weighting coefficients associated with the input parameters to predict the achievable REN of an ASR well. The ASR steadily injects extra surface water during periods of water availability and, subsequently, steadily extracts groundwater for use. Dense nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) are known to be denser than water and immiscible with other fluids. Once released into the environment, they migrate downward through the variably saturated zone, causing severe damage. For this reason, it is essential to properly develop a rapid response strategy, including predictions of contaminant migration trajectories from numerical simulations modeling. This paper presents a series of simulations of free-product DNAPL extraction by means of a purpose-designed pumping well. The objective is to minimize the environmental impact caused by DNAPL release in the subsurface, estimating the recoverable free-product DNAPL, depending on the hydraulic properties of the aquifer medium, and estimating the leaving residual DNAPL that could act as a long-term pollution source. Coupling the numerical simulations to the bacterial community characterization (through biomolecular analyses), it was verified that (i) the DNAPL recovery (mainly PCE at the study site) through a pumping well would be almost complete and (ii) the application of other remediation techniques (such as bioremediation) would not be necessary to remove the pollution source because (iii) a natural attenuation process is provided by the autochthonous bacterial community, which is characterized by genera (such as Dechloromonas, Rhodoferax, and Desulfurivibrio) that have metabolic pathways capable of favoring the degradation of chlorinated compounds. Groundwater is an important source of drinking water in coastal regions with predominantly unconsolidated sediments. To protect and manage drinking water extraction wells in these regions, reliable estimates of groundwater flow velocities around well fields are of paramount importance. Such measurements help to identify the dynamics of the groundwater flow and its response to stresses, to optimize water resources management, and to calibrate groundwater flow models. In this article, we review approaches for measuring the relatively high groundwater flow velocity measurements near these wells. We discuss and review their potential and limitations for use in this environment. Environmental tracer measurements are found to be useful for regional scale estimates of groundwater flow velocities and directions, but their use is limited near drinking water extraction wells. Surface-based hydrogeophysical measurements can potentially provide insight into groundwater flow velocity patterns, although the depth is limited in large-scale measurement setups. Active-heating distributed temperature sensing (AH-DTS) provides direct measurements of in situ groundwater flow velocities and can monitor fluctuations in the high groundwater flow velocities near drinking water extraction wells. Combining geoelectrical measurements with AH-DTS shows the potential to estimate a 3D groundwater flow velocity distribution to fully identify groundwater flow towards drinking water extraction wells. A regional water supply system in Jeju Island, South Korea, comprising 23 wellfields with 5 to 10 groundwater extraction wells (20–100 m spacing), provides water to the residents of the island. Regular large-scale groundwater pumping and excessive extraction in these wellfields have resulted in a decrease in groundwater levels. Using a numerical model, we aimed to assess the effect of large-scale groundwater extraction at four wellfields in Namwon, located in the southeastern part of the island. The numerical model estimated an approximately 0.16–0.21 m decline in water levels, which is consistent with field observations. Minor declines are inherently influenced by the regional hydrogeological setting of the study area, which involves high precipitation rates and a groundwater flow system that facilitates rapid groundwater replenishment. However, the model also shows that the decrease in groundwater levels is expected to intensify to 0.20–0.77 m in cases of extreme drought periods and increasing rates of groundwater pumping. In addition, this study suggests that sufficient well and wellfield separation distances should be considered to prevent well interference effects in areas, such as the western part of the island, with increased decline in water levels due to groundwater extraction. Chlorinated organic compounds are widespread aquifer contaminants. They are known to be dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs). Therefore, they are denser than water and immiscible with other fluids. Their migration into the environment in variably saturated zones can cause severe damage. For this reason, optimizing those actions that minimize the negative impact of these compounds in the subsurface is essential. This paper presented a numerical model simulating the free-product DNAPL migration and extraction through a purpose-designed pumping well in a potential emergency scenario. The numerical simulations were performed using CactusHydro, a numerical code that uses a high-resolution shock-capturing flux conservative method to resolve the non-linear coupled partial differential equations of a three-phase immiscible fluid flow recently proposed in the literature, including the contaminant extraction at the base of the aquifer. We investigated the temporal (and spatial) evolution of its migration in the Parma (Northern Italy) porous alluvial aquifer following the saturation contour profiles of the three-phase fluid flow in variably saturated zones. The results indicated that this numerical approach can simulate the contaminant migration in the subsurface and the pumping of the free-product from a well screened at the base of the aquifer system. In the inland closed area of Horqin Sandy Land, China, lakes are the most important source of water, and they maintain the regional hydrological balance and ecosystem health. Clarifying long-term continuous changes of inland lake surface area and water storage in the sandy land is thus of great significance to the management of water resources in arid and semi-arid areas. This study estimated changes in the surface area and water storage of small lakes in the sandy land during 1984–2021 using a multiple index threshold method and an empirical equation based on Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) DEM (digital elevation model) data and Landsat 5/7/8 images. Hydro-meteorological variables were also incorporated to explore their potential relationship with changes in the lake elements. The lakes in the sandy land resemble stars or dots, with distinct inhomogeneity. Permanent lakes account for the majority of the total lake area, mostly distributed in the center and east of the study area, whereas most seasonal lakes are small water bodies, with surface areas of 0.1–0.5 km2 and irregularly distributed. Lake surface area and water storage underwent frequent changes during the 38 years, and could be divided into three characteristic fluctuation phases. From 1984 to 1999, the lake surface area fluctuated greatly, and the water storage increased by approximately 0.3732 Gt, with an average expansion rate of 0.0572 Gt/y. Specifically, lakes with a surface area >2 km2 primarily accounted for the expansion. From 1999 to 2004, the lake area shrank sharply to the lowest point, and the water storage capacity decreased by approximately 0.4003 Gt. From 2004 to 2021, the lake surface area and water storage tended to be stable. Annual fluctuations of lake surface area and water storage were mostly affected by precipitation and evapotranspiration, followed by vapor pressure deficit, wet day frequency, and temperature, which have significant periodicity and hysteresis. Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) are an environmentally persistent group of chemicals that can pose an imminent threat to human health through groundwater and surface water contamination. In this review, we evaluate the subsurface behavior of a variety of PFAS chemicals with a focus on aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) discharge sites. AFFF is the primary PFAS contamination risk at sites such as airports and military bases due to use as a fire extinguisher. Understanding the fate and transport of PFAS in the subsurface environment is a multifaceted issue. This review focuses on the role of adsorbent, adsorbate, and aqueous solution in the fate and transport of PFAS chemicals. Additionally, other hydrogeological, geochemical, ecological factors such as accumulation at air–water interfaces, subsurface heterogeneity, polyfluorinated PFAS degradation pathways, and plant interactions are discussed. This review also examines several case studies at AFFF discharge sites in order to examine if the findings are consistent with the broader PFAS literature. We present the most crucial future research directions and trends regarding PFAS and provide valuable insights into understanding PFAS fate and transport at AFFF discharge sites. We suggest a more comprehensive approach to PFAS research endeavors that accounts for the wide variety of environmental variables that have been shown to impact PFAS fate and transport. We investigated the potential impact of observation error on the calibration performance of an integrated watershed model. A three-dimensional integrated model was constructed using HydroGeoSphere and applied to the Sabgyo watershed in South Korea to assess the groundwater–surface water interaction process. During the model calibration, three different weighting schemes that consider observation error variances were applied to the parameter estimation tool (PEST). The applied weighting schemes were compared with the results from stochastic models, in which observation errors from surface discharges were considered a random variable. Based on the calibrated model, the interactions between groundwater and surface water were predicted under different climate change scenarios (RCP). Comparisons of calibration performance between the different models showed that the observation-error-based weighting schemes contributed to an improvement in the model parameterization. Analysis of the exchange flux between groundwater and surface water highlighted the significance of groundwater in delaying the hydrological response of integrated water systems. Predictions based on different RCP scenarios suggested the increasing role of groundwater in watershed dynamics. We concluded that the comparison of different weighting schemes for the determination of error covariance could contribute to an improved characterization of watershed processes and reduce the model uncertainty arising from observation errors. Dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) in the subsurface environment beyond the permissible limit poses a threat to human health and a suite of ecological services. An accurate prediction of the concentration and mass fluxes of DNAPL at environmentally sensitive locations and their temporal variations can be obtained using robust and efficient fate and transport mathematical models. Thus, this study evaluated 412 articles published from 1990 to 2022 utilizing the Scopus® database to provide a quantitative overview of the present trends and future perspectives of the DNAPL transport research field, especially fate and transport models via bibliometric analysis. The major findings of the published literature based on the scale of the study and type of modeling framework, relationships of governing parameters with a scale of study, and recent developments in the mathematical models were discussed. The country-citation analysis revealed the USA and Canada as leading countries in DNAPL fate and transport research field. The findings of this study uncovered a need for studies considering low-permeability and stagnant regions, as well as the variable nature of the flow, transport, and reaction parameters to understand the complex plume evolution dynamics of DNAPLs under field-scale conditions. The nonlinear interactions between various flow and transport phenomena should be quantified during a model's development by applying spatial- and time-varying global sensitivity analyses. The outcomes of the bibliometric survey, visual analysis, and concise review presented in this study can provide a wide range of references, emerging topics, and prospects to emphasize less focused on topics of DNAPL transport research. Damage from climate change is widespread throughout the world. This change has brought about calamities, the most prevalent of which is the emergence of numerous droughts which are increasingly threatening human lives. In this paper, we studied the spatial and temporal variations of drought under the effect of climate change in the Huaibei Plain, which is a very important agricultural zone in China. Drought has attracted increasing attention in research due to its heavy impact on agriculture, the environment, livelihood, and food security. The SPEI (Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index) has been used in this study to express and identify drought events in the Huaibei Plain due to climate change. A general circulation model (GCM), HadGEM2-AO, which was the most appropriate for the study area's precipitation simulation, and three Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP), RCP 2.6, RCP 4.5, and RCP 8.5, were used to analyze and compare the drought effect for the baseline (1985–2017) and the future climate scenarios (2025–2090). At 3 and 6 months, the SPEI successfully detects agricultural drought in temporal and spatial variation. However, according to the analysis, more severe agricultural drought events are foreseen in the future than in the baseline because of climate change. SPEI performed better than SPI in detecting drought in the baseline and simulated data due to increased evapotranspiration. Between the SPEI-3 and SPEI-6, the Pearson coefficient correlation reveals a positive association. The Mann-Kendall test was used to cover the two studied periods in order to establish the drought trend. Aquifer hydraulic parameters play a critical role in investigating various groundwater hydrology problems (e.g., groundwater depletion and groundwater transport), and the Theis formula for constant-rate pumping tests is commonly used to estimate them. However, the pumping rate in the field usually varies with time due to some factors, making the classical constant-rate model unsuitable for accurate parameter estimation. To address this issue, we developed a novel dimensionless-form analytical solution for variable-rate pumping tests involving piecewise-constant approximations for variable pumping rates. Analysis of the time–drawdown curves revealed that the first-step type curve was consistent with the Theis curve. However, the curves of subsequent steps deviated from the Theis curve and were associated with the first dimensionless inflection time (t1,D), which depended on the hydraulic conductivity (K) and specific storage (Ss) of the confined aquifers. On this basis, a new type curve method for estimating the aquifer K and Ss was proposed by matching the observed drawdown data with a series of type curves dependent on t1,D. Furthermore, this method can handle recovery drawdown data. We applied this method to a field site in Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province, China, by analyzing the drawdown data from four pumping tests. The hydraulic parameters estimated using this method were in close agreement with those calibrated via PEST. The calibrated K values were further validated by comparing them with lithology-based results. In summary, the geometric means of K and Ss were 6.62 m/d and 3.16 × 10−5 m−1 for the first confined aquifer and 0.92 m/d and 2.34 × 10−4 m−1 for the second confined aquifer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In France, and more generally in Europe, the high number of groundwater bodies (GWB) per administrative region is an obstacle for the management and monitoring of water for human consumption by regional health agencies. Moreover, GWBs show a high spatial, temporal, physico-chemical, and bacteriological variability. The objective is to establish homogeneous groupings of GWB from the point of view of water quality and the processes responsible for this quality. In the Occitanie region in southwestern France, the cross-referencing of two databases, namely the French reference system for groundwater bodies and SISE-EAUX, provided a dataset of 8110 observations and 15 parameters distributed over 106 GWB. The 8-step approach, including data conditioning, dimensional reduction by Principal Component Analysis, and hierarchical clustering, resulted in 20 homogeneous groups of GWB over the whole region. The loss of information caused by this grouping is quantified by the evolution of the explained variance. Splitting the region into two large basins (Adour-Garonne and Rhône Méditerranée) according to the recommendations of the European community does not result in a significant additional loss of information contained in the data. A quick study of a few groups allows to highlight the specificities of each one, thus enabling targeted guidelines or recommendations for water quality management and monitoring. Geologic material properties of hillslopes are inherently heterogeneous, with complex layering structures due to geological deposition processes. Lacking detailed sampling of the properties' spatial distribution has led to the stochastic representation of the properties to address uncertainty in the hillslope stability evaluation. This study treats the spatial distributions of the shear strength parameters, the cohesion (c), and the internal friction angle (φ), in a synthetic two-dimensional slope as stochastic random fields characterized by their means, variances, and correlation scales. This study then evaluates the cross-correlation between these parameters and the factor of safety (FS) using unconditional Monte Carlo simulation (MCS). Different from classical sensitivity analyses, the cross-correlation analysis of FS and the stochastic parameter fields stresses the importance of the orientation of the large-scale geological layering, the correlation between the geological media's cohesion, and the internal friction angle at the local scale on the probability and uncertainty of failure of the heterogeneous hillslope. The analysis further guides the field sampling strategy to reduce uncertainty in the slope stability analysis due to unknown heterogeneity. More importantly, it suggests the location of stability reinforcement measures. Lakes in cold and arid regions are extremely vulnerable to global climate change, and the study of seasonal spatial and temporal fluctuations of lake-groundwater chemistry is of major significance for water resource management and environmental preservation. In this study, we combined hydrogeochemical, multivariate statistical, and spatial interpolation methods to assess spatial and temporal variations of lake and groundwater chemistry in Hulun Lake during the frozen and non-frozen periods. The results show that sodium (Na+) is the most abundant cation in the Hulun Lake area. Bicarbonate (HCO3−) and sulfate (SO42−) are the most predominant anions in the lake, river, and ground water during both seasons. The higher Na+ + K+ concentrations in the frozen season were related to longer circulation time and lower renewable rate. The water chemistry of the lake was of the HCO3-SO4-Cl-Na type and that of groundwater in the east and west regions was of the SO4-Cl-Na and HCO3-Na types, respectively. The chemical compositions of groundwater in the non-frozen season were mainly affected by evaporation and concentration, while rock weathering, evaporation, and human activities jointly controlled groundwater chemical component in the frozen period. Based on hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA) methods, Ca2+, NO3−, and SO42− were identified as the main controlling indicators of the chemical characteristics of groundwater and lake water. The increase of Ca2+ concentration in the center of the lake was related to groundwater discharge along the marginal tectonic fracture zone along the lake shores, which was the potential groundwater discharge area. The unconsolidated aquifer provides recharge channels for groundwater on the eastern side, which has a certain influence on the increase of nutrient concentration (NO3−) in the lake on the eastern shore. This research adds to our rough understanding of the lake-groundwater interaction in Hulun Lake, and provides a scientific foundation for the sustainable use of water resources, as well as the eco-logical integrity preservation in cold and arid regions. Water quality is a major concern globally and in headwater catchments of developing countries it is often poorly managed. In these catchments, having scarce and heterogeneous information hinders the development of water quality assessments and predictive models to support management. To address this issue, the authors propose a framework of three stages that allows for: (i) conducting a comprehensive assessment of water quality; (ii) the development of a mountain stream water quality model based on said assessment; and (iii) the simulation of scenarios with the model to resolve conflicts between uses and quality of water. The framework involves multivariate analyses of principal components and clusters and follows a novel modeling protocol mainly designed for mountainous streams in developing countries. Applied to an Andean catchment in Colombia, the first stage of the framework revealed the catchment's most significant water quality constituents and the most polluted season. The problematic constituents in this catchment include pathogens, nutrients, organic matter, and metals such as the highly toxic Cr and Pb, while water pollution is the highest during the driest months of the year (i.e., January to March). In the second stage, the model was calibrated reproducing the concentrations of pathogens, organic matter, and most nutrients, and showed a predictive capacity. This capacity was measured with an objective function to be minimized based on a normalized root mean square error. It increased only 14% when verified with a different dataset. In addition, during the third stage of the proposed framework, the simulation of alternative scenarios showed that centralized treatment is not sufficient to make water safe for potabilization and agriculture in the catchment. For this reason, improving water quality in the sub-basins at the highest altitudes is required. Industrial development has significantly increased the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere, resulting in the greenhouse effect that harms the global climate and human health. CO2 sequestration in saline aquifers is considered to be one of the efficient ways to eliminate atmospheric CO2 levels. As an important mechanism, the solubility trapping greatly determines the efficiency of CO2 sequestration in saline aquifers, and this depends, in turn, on the density-driven convection that occurs during the sequestration. Density-driven convection is influenced by multiple factors. However, existing discussions on some of these influential factors are still ambiguous or even reach contradictory conclusions. This review summarizes the common modeling approaches and the influence of factors on density-driven convection. We suggest that saline aquifers with high values of depth, permeability, pH, and SO2 impurity concentration are the ideal CO2 sequestration sites. A certain degree of porosity, fractures, stratification, slope, hydrodynamic dispersion, background flow, and formation pressure are also considered advantageous. Meanwhile, the geological formation of the Permian White Rim Sandstone or carbonate is important, but it should not contain brine with excessive viscosity and salinity. The demand for agricultural water is a growing problem in irrigated regions across the globe, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. Changes in the level of groundwater in irrigation districts will affect the flow of surface water connected to the aquifer, which may damage the sustainability of water resources and ecosystems. In this study, a two-dimensional unsteady flow model based on MODFLOW was constructed and three scenarios were established to assess the demand for agricultural water in the Jiaokou Irrigation District. The results show that the groundwater in the study area is basically balanced. However, the supply of irrigation water for summer irrigation is insufficient. The results of the model prediction indicate that when groundwater is primarily used for irrigation (scenario 1), the maximum water level decrease is 25 m, which is beyond this limit (15 m). When the ratio of groundwater to surface water is 2:1 for irrigation (scenario 2), the largest decrease in water level is approximately 10 m. Scenario 3 is proposed based on the Hanjiang-to-Weihe River Valley Water Diversion Project to prevent the salinization of soil owing to the rise in water level, and its result shows that the maximum decrease and buried depth are approximately 5 m and above 3 m, respectively, indicating that the scenario is more reasonable and sustainable. These findings provide theoretical guidance to protect water resources and prevent water pollution and should serve as a reference for rationally allocating water resources in other irrigation districts in arid and semi-arid areas. Recalcitrant groundwater contamination is a common problem at hazardous waste sites worldwide. Groundwater contamination persists despite decades of remediation efforts at many sites because contaminants sorbed or dissolved within low-conductivity zones can back diffuse into high-conductivity zones, and therefore act as a continuing source of contamination to flowing groundwater. A review of the available literature on remediation of plume persistence due to back diffusion was conducted, and four sites were selected as case studies. Remediation at the sites included pump and treat, enhanced bioremediation, and thermal treatment. Our review highlights that a relatively small number of sites have been studied in sufficient detail to fully evaluate remediation of back diffusion; however, three general conclusions can be made based on the review. First, it is difficult to assess the significance of back diffusion without sufficient data to distinguish between multiple factors contributing to contaminant rebound and plume persistence. Second, high-resolution vertical samples are decidedly valuable for back diffusion assessment but are generally lacking in post-treatment assessments. Third, complete contaminant mass removal from back diffusion sources may not always be possible. Partial contaminant mass removal may nonetheless have potential benefits, similar to partial mass removal from primary DNAPL source zones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The past two decades have seen an intensive development in two-way coupled atmospheric and hydrological models, providing new opportunities to thoroughly understand hydrology–atmosphere coupling and improve hydrometeorological forecasting, which has not been possible before. This paper summarizes recent developments in hydrological presentation in land surface models (LSMs) and climate models, and the two-way coupling of atmospheric and hydrological models. The fully coupled models have been widely applied in identifying the impact of lateral surface and subsurface water transport in a land–atmosphere coupled system, and hydrometeorological simulations using techniques such as parameter calibration, data assimilation, and hydrology model structure revision have been used to improve the model accuracy. However, their applications still face major challenges, e.g., the complexity of hydrological parameter calibration, the lack of understanding of the physical mechanisms at high resolution, the parameterization of anthropogenic activities, and the limitations in simulation domain and period. Despite these difficulties, fully coupled atmospheric and hydrological models will gradually evolve into powerful tools to reproduce regional water cycles, offering significant potential for scientifically investigating water resources security issues affected by both climate change and human activities. When studying large multiparametric databases with very heterogeneous parameters (microbiological, chemical, and physicochemical), covering a wide and heterogeneous area, the probability of observing extreme values (Z-score > 2.5) is high. The information carried by these few samples monopolizes a large part of the information conveyed by the entire database. The study of the spatial structure of the data and the identification of the mechanisms responsible for the water quality are then strongly degraded. Data transformation can be proposed to overcome these problems. This study deals with a database of 8110 groundwater analyses (Occitanie region, France), on which the bacteriological load was measured in Escherichia coli and Enterococci, in addition to electrical conductivity, major ions, Mn, Fe, As and pH. Three modes of data conditioning were tested and compared to the treatment with raw data. The results show that log transformation is the best option, revealing a relationship between E. coli content and all the other parameters. By reducing the impact of extreme values without eliminating them, it allowed a concentration of information on the first factorial axes of the PCA, and consequently a better definition of the associated processes. The spatial structure of the principal components and their cartographic representation is improved. The conditioning of the data with the square root function led to an intermediate improvement between the logarithmic transformation and the absence of conditioning. The agricultural industry uses substantial amounts of water (the highest in the world) mostly for irrigation purposes. Rapid population growth and, consequently, growing demand for food have increased the use of pesticide to have higher yield for crops and other agricultural products. Wastewater generated as a result of excessive use of pesticides/herbicides in agricultural industry is becoming a global issue specifically in developing countries. Over 4,000,000 tons of pesticides are currently used in the world annually and high concentrations above their threshold limits have been detected in water bodies worldwide. The generated wastewater (contaminated with pesticides) has negative impacts on human health, the ecosystem, and the aquatic environment. Recently, biodegradable and biocompatible (including plant-based) pesticides have been introduced as green and safe products to reduce/eliminate the negative impacts of synthetic pesticides. Despite positive advantages of biopesticides, their use is limited due to cost and slow interaction with pests compared to chemical pesticides. Pesticides may also react with water and constituents of soil resulting in formation of intermediates having different physical and chemical properties. Diffusion, dispersion, and permeation are main mechanisms for transfer of pesticides in soil and water. Pesticides may degrade naturally in nature; however, the time requirement can be very long. Many mathematical models have been developed to simulate and estimate the final fate of pesticides in water resources. Buffer material has been shown to be effective over the long term for radionuclide diffusion retardation and is used as the final artificial barrier of the multi-barrier system in the high-level waste disposal repository. The method of disposal raises the possibility of radionuclides escaping and returning to the biosphere when ground water enters the natural geological barrier, risking the repository's long-term stability and safety. Bentonite was chosen as the basic material in the integrated buffer material due to its low permeability, high swelling, and self-healing ability. Meanwhile, attapulgite served as an auxiliary, and pyrite served as a mineral additive. The buffer material B7AP was created by combining three materials, namely bentonite, attapulgite, and pyrite, with a mass ratio of 63:27:10. The diffusion of uranium in samples with a dry density of 1.70 g/cm3 was studied using a constant source diffusion experiment. The results showed that the B7AP buffer material had a good uranium retardation effect, with an apparent diffusion coefficient of 4.07 × 10−12 m2/s. In addition, using the theory of porous media contaminant migration, a simplified convection-dispersion-adsorption equation for uranium migration on integrated buffer material B7AP was established. MATLAB software was used to simulate time scales, seepage velocity, apparent diffusion coefficient, and retardation factor. The current study provides scientific evidence for improving retardation performance, screening, and optimizing the formula design of radioactive waste repository buffer materials. Changes in water resources within basins can significantly impact ecosystems, agriculture, and biodiversity, among others. Basins in northern Canada have a cold climate, and the recent changes in climate can have a profound impact on water resources in these basins. Therefore, it is crucial to study long term trends in water flow as well as their influential factors, such as temperature and precipitation. This study focused on analyzing long term trends in water flow across the Athabasca River Basin (ARB) and Peace River Basin (PRB). Long term trends in temperature and precipitation within these basins were also studied. Water flow data from 18 hydrometric stations provided by Water Survey of Canada were analyzed using the Mann-Kendall test and Sen's slope. In addition, hybrid climate data provided by Alberta Environment and Parks at approximately 10 km spatial resolution were analyzed for the ARB and its surrounding regions during 1950–2019. Trend analysis was performed on the water flow data on monthly, seasonal, and annual scales, and the results were cross-checked with trends in temperature and precipitation and land use and land cover data. The overall temperature across the basins has been increasing since 1950, while precipitation showed an insignificant decrease during this period. Winter water flow in the upper ARB has been slowly and steadily increasing since 1956 because of the rising temperatures and the subsequent slow melting of snowpacks/glaciers. The warm season flows in the middle and lower subregions declined up to 1981, then started to show an increasing trend. The middle and lower ARB exhibited a rapid increase in warm-season water flow since 2015. A similar trend change was also observed in the PRB. The gradual increase in water flow observed in the recent decades may continue by the mid-century, which is beneficial for agriculture, forestry, fishery, and industry. However, climate and land cover changes may alter the trend of water flow in the future; therefore, it is important to have a proper management plan for water usage in the next decades. Probabilistic models with flexible tail behavior have important applications in engineering and earth science. We introduce a nonlinear normalizing transformation and its inverse based on the deformed lognormal and exponential functions proposed by Kaniadakis. The deformed exponential transform can be used to generate skewed data from normal variates. We apply this transform to a censored autoregressive model for the generation of precipitation time series. We also highlight the connection between the heavy-tailed κ -Weibull distribution and weakest-link scaling theory, which makes the κ -Weibull suitable for modeling the mechanical strength distribution of materials. Finally, we introduce the κ -lognormal probability distribution and calculate the generalized (power) mean of κ -lognormal variables. The κ -lognormal distribution is a suitable candidate for the permeability of random porous media. In summary, the κ -deformations allow for the modification of tails of classical distribution models (e.g., Weibull, lognormal), thus enabling new directions of research in the analysis of spatiotemporal data with skewed distributions. While Rwanda is aiming at environmental pollution resilience and green growth, some industries are still discharging untreated effluent into the environment. This study gives a general overview of the compliance level of industrial effluent discharge in Rwanda and the linked negative environmental impacts. It comprises qualitative and quantitative analyses of data obtained from wastewater samples collected from five selected industries in Rwanda. The selected industries had previously been audited and monitored by the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA), due to complains from neighboring residents. The study found that the effluent discharge from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) for all concerned industries failed to comply with (i) oil and grease (O&G) national and international tolerable parameter limits or the (ii) fecal coliforms national standard. In addition, a compliance level of 66.7% was observed for key water quality monitoring parameters (pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), and heavy metals (i.e., lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and chromium (Cr)). Following these study findings, one industry was closed by the REMA for deliberately discharging untreated effluent into an adjacent river. This study recommends the adoption of the best available technology for effluent treatment, installation or renovation of existing WWTPs, and the relocation to industrial zones of industries adjacent to fragile environments. The objective of the study was to configure the Hydrological Modeling System (HEC-HMS) in such a way that it could simulate all-important hydrological components (e.g., streamflow, soil moisture, snowmelt water, terrestrial water storage, baseflow, surface flow, and evapotranspiration) in the Three-River Headwater Region. However, the problem we faced was unsatisfactory simulations of these hydrological components, except streamflow. The main reason we found was the auto-calibration method of HEC-HMS because it generated irrational parameters, especially with the inclusion of Temperature Index Method and Soil Moisture Accounting (an advanced and complex loss method). Similar problems have been reported by different previous studies. To overcome these problems, we designed a comprehensive approach to estimate initial parameters and to calibrate the model manually in such a way that the model could simulate all the important hydrological components satisfactorily. A new method for simulating solute transport and geochemical interactions within fractured rock is presented. This will be an important capability for assessing the safety of radioactive waste disposal facilities that are located within fractured crystalline bedrock. Specifically, the discrete fracture network (DFN) module within the ConnectFlow groundwater flow and transport software has been updated to: (i) simulate the advection and diffusion of more than one solute species (with the flow and transport equations coupled by the evolving density and viscosity); (ii) model the diffusion of solutes into the rock matrix between fractures; and (iii) utilise the iPhreeqc library to model chemical reactions involving solutes, minerals on fracture/pore surfaces and rock minerals. The performance of ConnectFlow's DFN module has also been significantly improved via parallelisation which allows more complex calculations to be attempted. These developments are significant because hydrogeochemistry within fractured rock is more accurately represented in an explicit DFN, rather than using more approximate equivalent continuous porous medium (ECPM) methods. Illustrative calculations have been completed for the disposal facility for spent nuclear fuel at Olkiluoto in Finland, and the former candidate site for spent fuel disposal, Laxemar, in Sweden. These calculations show that DFN simulations provide results that are qualitatively similar to results from ECPM calculations. This study attempts to integrate a Surface Water (SW) model Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) with an existing steady-state, single layer, unconfined heterogeneous aquifer Analytic Element Method (AEM) based Ground Water (GW) model, named Bluebird AEM engine, for a comprehensive assessment of SW and GW resources and its management. The main reason for integrating SWAT with the GW model is that the SWAT model does not simulate the distribution and dynamics of GW levels and recharge rates. To overcome this issue, often the SWAT model is coupled with the numerical GW model (either using MODFLOW or FEFLOW), wherein the spatial and temporal patterns of the interactions are better captured and assessed. However, the major drawback in integrating the two models (SWAT with—MODFLOW/FEM) is its conversion from Hydrological Response Unit's (HRU)/sub-basins to grid/elements. To couple them, a spatial translation system is necessary to move the inputs and outputs back and forth between the two models due to the difference in discretization. Hence, for effective coupling of SW and GW models, it may be desirable to have both models with a similar spatial discretization and reduce the need for rigorous numerical techniques for solving the PDEs. The objective of this paper is to test the proof of concept of integrating a distributed hydrologic model with an AEM model at the same spatial units, primarily focused on surface water and groundwater interaction with a shallow unconfined aquifer. Analytic Element Method (AEM) based GW models seem to be ideal for coupling with SWAT due to their innate character to consider the HRU, sub-basin, River, and lake boundaries as individual analytic elements directly without the need for any further discretization or modeling units. This study explores the spatio-temporal patterns of groundwater (GW) discharge rates to a river system in a moist-sub humid region with SWAT-AEM applied to the San Jacinto River basin (SJRB) in Texas. The SW-GW interactions are explored throughout the watershed from 2000–2017 using the integrated SWAT-AEM model, which is tested against stream flow and GW levels. The integrated SWAT-AEM model results show good improvement in predicting the stream flow (R2 = 0.65–0.80) and GW levels as compared to the standalone SWAT model. Further, the integrated model predicted the low flows better compared to the standalone SWAT model, thus accounting for the SW-GW interactions. Almost 80% of the stream network experiences an increase in groundwater discharge rate between 2000 and 2017 with an annual average GW discharge rate of 1853 Mm3/year.
