Cation⊗3π interactions play a special role in the behaviors of biological molecules and carbon-based materials in aqueous solutions, yet the effects of solvation on these interactions remain poorly understood. This study examines the sequential attachment of water molecules to cation⊗3π systems (cation = Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺), revealing that solvation influences interaction strengths in opposing ways: solvation of the metal cation decreases the strengths of cation⊗3π interactions, while the solvation of the benzene molecule increases the strengths of cation⊗3π interactions, compared with the strengths of cation⊗3π interactions in the gas phase. The mechanism analyses revealed that in the presence of surrounding water molecules, the stability of cation⊗3π systems is generally enhanced by cation–π, π–π, water–π, and water–ion interactions, while water–water interactions typically have a destabilizing effect. In addition, the primary effect of water molecules at different adsorption sites is to modulate the Coulombic multipole–multipole interactions and the overlap between monomeric charge distributions, thereby influencing the changes in strengths of cation⊗3π interactions. Moreover, AIMD simulations further underscore the practical significance of cation⊗3π interactions. FmocFF (9-fluorenyl methoxycarbonyl-phenylalanine) is an extensively studied low-molecular-weight hydrogel. Although there have been numerous studies on FmocFF hydrogel, its potential to form organogels has not been well explored. In this work, we systematically explore the organogels of FmocFF in a wide range of organic solvents. FmocFF is found to be a robust organogeltor, and the subsequent organogels exhibit diverse gelmorphic behavior exhibiting various degrees of crystallinity and morphology depending on the solvent used. The mechanical strength of the organogels is evaluated using rheology. A novel technique, in situ SHG microscopy, is introduced to study the gel structure in its native state. In addition to the solvent–solute interactions that are typically used to predict gelmorphic behavior, we observed indications that the degree of crystallinity also plays a significant role in determining the mechanical properties and structure of FmocFF organogels. The effect of the external electric field on the ground-state tautomerism in 8-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)quinolin-7-ol has been studied by using density functional theory. The compound exists as an enol tautomer (off state) and under the influence of the external electric field a long-range intramolecular proton transfer can occur, placing the tautomeric proton at the quinolyl nitrogen atom (on state). This is a result of the much higher dipole moment of the end keto tautomer and indicates that the external electric field can be used to mimic the implicit solvent effect in tautomeric systems. In the excited state, the further stabilization of the most polar on state leads to a situation when the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer becomes impossible, limiting the intramolecular rotation to the conical intersection region. The impact of solvents on the efficiency of cationic dye adsorption from a solution onto protonated Faujasite-type zeolite (FAU-Y) was investigated in the prospect of supporting potential applications in wastewater treatment or in the preparation of building blocks for optical devices. The adsorption isotherms were experimentally determined for methylene blue (MB) and auramine O (AO) from single-component solutions in water and in ethanol. The limiting dye uptake (saturation capacity) was evaluated for each adsorption system, and it decreased in the order of MB–water > AO–water > AO–ethanol > MB–ethanol. The mutual distances and orientations of the adsorbed dye species, and their interactions with the oxygen sites of the FAU-Y framework, with the solvent molecules, and among themselves were inferred from Monte Carlo simulations and subsequently utilized to rationalize the observed differences in the saturation capacity. The dye–solvent competition and the propensity of the dyes to form compact pi-stacked dimers were shown to play an important role in establishing a non-uniform distribution of the adsorbed species throughout the porous space. The dimethylaminophenyl-substituted silver phthalocyanine [dmaphPcAg] can be used as a UV-vis photoinitiator for in situ preparation of a silver/polymer nanocomposite. To verify early steps of the supposed mechanism of radical polymerization, we performed quantum chemical calculations of m[dmaphPcAg]q complexes with charges q = +1 to −2 in the two lowest spin states m, of a free ligand and its dehydrogenated/deprotonated products m[dmaphPcHn]q, n = 2 to 0, q = 0, −1 or −2, in the lowest spin states m. The calculated electronic structures and electron transitions of all the optimized structures in CHCl3 solutions are compared with experimental EPR and UV-vis spectra, respectively. The unstable 3[dmaphPcAg]+ species deduced only from previous EPR spin trap experiments was identified. In addition to 2[dmaphPcAg]0, our results suggest the coexistence of both reaction intermediates 1[dmaphPcAg]− and 3[dmaphPcAg]− in reaction solutions. The tautomerism in the title compound as a potential long-range proton transfer (PT) switch has been studied by using the DFT and TD-DFT approaches. The data show that in aprotic solvents, the enol tautomer dominates, while the increase in the content of the keto tautomer (short-range PT) rises as a function of polarity of the solvent. In ethanol, due to specific solute–solvent stabilization through intermolecular hydrogen bonding, a substantial amount of the keto forms exists in solution. The irradiation leads to two competitive processes in the excited state, namely ESIPT and trans/cis isomerization around the azomethine bond as in other structurally similar Schiff bases. The studied compound is not suitable for bistable tautomeric switching, where long-range PT occurs, due to the difficult enolization of the coumarin carbonyl group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Amyloid aggregates arise from either the partial or complete loss of the native protein structure or the inability of proteins to attain their native conformation. These aggregates have been linked to several diseases, including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and lysozyme amyloidosis. A comprehensive dataset was recently reported, demonstrating the critical role of the protein's surrounding environment in amyloid formation. In this study, we investigated the formation of lysozyme amyloid fibrils induced by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and the effect of solvents in the medium. Experimental data obtained through fluorescence spectroscopy revealed a notable lag phase in amyloid formation when acetone solution was present. This finding suggested that the presence of acetone in the reaction medium created an unfavorable microenvironment for amyloid fibril formation and impeded the organization of the denatured protein into the fibril form. The in silico data provided insights into the molecular mechanism of the interaction between acetone molecules and the lysozyme protofibril, once acetone presented the best experimental results. It was observed that the lysozyme protofibril became highly unstable in the presence of acetone, leading to the complete loss of its β-sheet conformation and resulting in an open structure. Furthermore, the solvation layer of the protofibril in acetone solution was significantly reduced compared to that in other solvents, resulting in fewer hydrogen bonds. Consequently, the presence of acetone facilitated the exposure of the hydrophobic portion of the protofibril, precluding the amyloid fibril formation. To achieve the target colors, pigmentation (post-processing) in solvents is a key process in making Pigment Yellow 180 (PY180), a bis azo pigment. In this work, the solvent effect on the pigmentation behavior of PY180 was studied based on the Hansen solubility parameters (HSPs) and the molecular polarity index (MPI) method. First, the samples were characterized using FTIR, XRD, and TEM, and the colorimetric analysis was performed using the CIE L*a*b* color space model. It was found that the color hues obtained in ten solvents are different, with the overall color variation from reddish–yellow to greenish–yellow. Further characterization confirmed that the crystallinity and particle size increase of PY180 during the pigmentation mainly account for the variation of the chromaticity. Then, HSPs were introduced to understand how suspension behavior affects the dissolution–reprecipitation process. It shows that high-quality pigments can be obtained from solvents generally with low HSP differences (Δδ) between the solvents and PY180. To compensate for the inaccurate prediction of the HSPs method, MPI was used to value the influence of solvent molecular polarity. The results show that among solvents with similar solubility parameters to PY180, the stronger the molecular polarity index (MPI) of the solvent, the greater the color variation of the pigments. The electronic absorption and vibrational spectra of deprotonated 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(p-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin (THPP) are studied as a function of solvent polarity in H2O-DMF, H2O-acetone, H2O-methanol, and DMF-acetone mixtures. The maximum absorption wavelength (λmax) of the lowest energy electronic absorption band of deprotonated THPP shows an unusual solvatochromism-a bathochromic followed by a hypsochromic shift with reduced polarity. According to the correlation analysis, both specific interactions (H-bonds) and nonspecific interactions affect the spectral changes of this porphyrin. Furthermore, the solvent polarity scale ET(30) can explain both shifts very well. At higher polarity (ET(30) > 48), THPP exists as a hyperporphyrin. The ET(30) is linear with λmax and a decrease in solvent polarity is accompanied by a bathochromic shift of λmax. These results can be rationalized in terms of the cooperative effects of H-bonds and nonspecific interactions on the spectra of hyperporphyrin. At relatively low polarity (45.5 < ET(30) < 48), hyperporphyrin gradually becomes Na2P as ET(30) reaches the critical value of 45.5. The spectrum of the hyperporphyrin turns into the three-band spectrum of the metalloporphyrin, which is accompanied by a hypsochromic shift of λmax. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Effects of processing and extraction solvents on antioxidant properties and other characteristics were evaluated for ten medicinal plant species originating from two different localities and two production years. A combination of spectroscopic and liquid chromatography techniques possessed data for multivariate statistics. Water, 50% (v/v) ethanol, and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) were compared to select the most suitable solvent for the isolation of functional components from the frozen/dried medicinal plants. DMSO and 50% (v/v) ethanol were evaluated as more efficient for phenolic compounds and colorants extraction, while water was more useful for element extraction. Drying and extraction of herbs with 50% (v/v) ethanol was the most appropriate treatment to ensure a high yield of most compounds. The satisfactory differentiation of herbs (61.8–100%) confirmed the significant effect of the processing, geographical, and seasonal factors on target functional component concentrations. Total phenolic and total flavonoid compounds content, total antioxidant activity expressed as TAA, yellowness, chroma, and browning index were identified as the most important markers for medicinal plant differentiation. Amino derivatives of purine (2-, 6-, 8-, and N-NH2) have found many applications in biochemistry. This paper presents the results of a systematic computational study of the substituent and solvent effects in these systems. The issues considered are the electron-donating properties of NH2, its geometry, π-electron delocalization in purine rings and tautomeric stability. Calculations were performed in ten environments, with 1 < ε < 109, using the polarizable continuum model of solvation. Electron-donating properties were quantitatively described by cSAR (charge of the substituent active region) parameter and π-electron delocalization by using the HOMA (harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity) index. In aminopurines, NH2 proximity interactions depend on its position and the tautomer. The results show that they are the main factor determining how solvation affects the electron-donating strength and geometry of NH2. Proximity with the NH∙∙∙HN repulsive interaction between the NH2 and endocyclic NH group results in stronger solvent effects than the proximity with two attractive NH∙∙∙N interactions. The effect of amino and nitro (previously studied) substitution on aromaticity was compared; these two groups have, in most cases, the opposite effect, with the largest being in N1H and N3H purine tautomers. The amino group has a smaller effect on the tautomeric preferences of purine than the nitro group. Only in 8-aminopurine do tautomeric preferences change: N7H is more stable than N9H in H2O. A combination of transient methods in a laboratory-scale trickle bed reactor and attenuated total reflection (ATR)-infrared spectroscopy was applied to gain insight into the reaction mechanism of the direct synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (DSHP) on a commercial 5 %Pd/C catalyst, with water and methanol used as solvents. During the transient studies, after the switch from water to methanol, an oscillatory pattern was observed in which methoxy and hydroxymethyl species were observed prior to the peroxide species. From the specific position and the maxima in the intensities of these species over time, an augmented reaction scheme for the DSHP in methanol was proposed, in which methanol can form hydroxymethyl species which act as co-catalysts to reduce absorbed oxygen species. In this work, 242 NMR spin–spin coupling constants (SSCC) in 20 molecules are calculated, either with correlated wave function methods, SOPPA and HRPA(D), or with density functional theory based on the B3LYP, BHandH, or PBE0 functionals. The calculations were carried out with and without treatment of solvation via a polarizable continuum model in both the geometry optimization step and/or the SSCC calculation, and thereby, four series of calculations were considered (the full-vacuum calculation, the full-solvent calculation, and the two cross combinations). The results were compared with experimental results measured in a solvent. With the goal of reproducing experimental values, we find that the performance of the PBE0 and BHandH SSCCs improves upon including solvation effects. On the other hand, the quality of the B3LYP SSCCs worsens with the inclusion of solvation. Solvation had almost no effect on the performance of the SOPPA and HRPA(D) calculations. The role of solvents is crucial in catalyst preparation. With regard to catalysts prepared with activated carbon (AC) as the carrier, when water is used as a solvent it is difficult for the solution to infiltrate the AC. Because AC comprises a large number of C atoms and is a nonpolar material, it is more effective for the adsorption of nonpolar substances. Since the water and active ingredients are polar, they cannot easily infiltrate AC. In this study, the dispersion of the active component was significantly improved by optimizing the solvent, and the particle size of the active component was reduced from 33.08 nm to 15.30 nm. The specific surface area of the catalyst is significantly increased, by 10%, reaching 991.49 m2/g. Under the same reaction conditions, the conversion of acetic acid by the catalyst prepared with the mixed solvent was maintained at approximately 65%, which was 22% higher than that obtained using the catalyst prepared with water as the solvent. Small molecule thin films are the core of some organic optoelectronic devices. Their deposition by solution processes is an advantage for device fabrication and can be achieved via spin coating for small areas and slot-die or doctor blade for larger areas. Solution deposition of small molecule thin films is usually processed only with medium polarity solvents. Herein, the use and influence of solvents with several polarities and physicochemical properties to form small-molecule homogeneous thin films via the doctor blade technique over an area of 25 cm2 have been explored. Solvents with different polarity, heptane, chlorobenzene, N,N-dimethylformamide, acetonitrile, and methanol were used along with different deposition temperatures, from room temperature up to near the boiling temperature for each solvent. With heptane and chlorobenzene, smooth films with an average roughness of 3 nm and thickness of 100–120 nm were obtained. The film was homogeneous over the whole substrate for temperatures from room temperature to close to the boiling temperature of both solvents. On the other hand, with dimethylformamide, a film is observed when the deposition is conducted only at room temperature; when the deposition temperature increases, the formation of agglomerates of several sizes from 1 to 5 nm was observed. With acetonitrile, and methanol, no films were formed, and only nanoaggregates were created on the substrate due to the solvent high vapor pressure, and the agglomerate size depends on the deposition temperature. The measure of the contact angle of pure solvent and solutions indicated that wettability helps to film formation over the whole substrate. For heptane and chlorobenzene, a small angle was measured; meanwhile, the contact angle is large in acetonitrile leading to the formation of nanoaggregates. The influence of solvents on intramolecular interactions in 5- or 6-substituted nitro and amino derivatives of six tautomeric forms of uracil was investigated. For this purpose, the density functional theory (B97-D3/aug-cc-pVDZ) calculations were performed in ten environments (1 > ε > 109) using the polarizable continuum model (PCM) of solvation. The substituents were characterized by electronic (charge of the substituent active region, cSAR) and geometric parameters. Intramolecular interactions between non-covalently bonded atoms were investigated using the theory of atoms in molecules (AIM) and the non-covalent interaction index (NCI) method, which allowed discussion of possible interactions between the substituents and N/NH endocyclic as well as =O/−OH exocyclic groups. The nitro group was more electron-withdrawing in the 5 than in the 6 position, while the opposite effect was observed in the case of electron donation of the amino group. These properties of both groups were enhanced in polar solvents; the enhancement depended on the ortho interactions. Substitution or solvation did not change tautomeric preferences of uracil significantly. However, the formation of a strong NO∙∙∙HO intramolecular hydrogen bond in the 5-NO2 derivative stabilized the dienol tautomer from +17.9 (unsubstituted) to +5.4 kcal/mol (substituted, energy relative to the most stable diketo tautomer). It is common to find that some of the lactose in dairy powders and pharmaceutical tablets is present in the unstable amorphous state. Therefore, their crystallization thermodynamics in different solvents are particularly important. In this paper, the solubility of α-lactose monohydrate (α-LM) in 15 mono-solvents such as ethanol, isopropanol, methanol, 1-propanol, 1-butanol, 2-butanol, isobutanol, 1-pentanol, isoamylol, 1-hexanol, 1-heptanol, 1-octanol, propanoic acid, acetonitrile, and cyclohexanone was evaluated by using the gravimetric method in the temperature ranges from 274.05 K to 323.05 K at constant pressure (1 atm). In the given temperature range, the solubility of α-LM in these solvents increased with the rising of temperature, the highest solubility of α-LM was found in methanol (2.37 × 104), and the lowest was found in 1-hexanol (0.80 × 105). In addition, the increase of α-LM solubility in isopropanol was the largest. The sequence at 298.15 K was: methanol > 1-butanol > isopropanol > ethanol > 1-propanol > 1-heptanol > isobutanol > propionic acid > 1-pentanol > 1-octanol > acetonitrile > isoamylol > 2-butanol > cyclohexanone > 1-hexanol. Solvent effect analysis shows that the properties of α-LM are more important than those of solvents. The Apelblat equation, λh equation, Wilson model, and NRTL model were used to correlate the experimental values. The root-mean-square deviation (RMSD) and relative average deviation (RAD) of all models were less than 2.68 × 10−2 and 1.41 × 10−6, respectively, implying that the fitted values of four thermodynamic models all agreed well with the experimental values. Moreover, the thermodynamic properties of the dissolution process (i.e., dissolution Gibbs free energy (ΔdisG), molar enthalpy (ΔdisH), and molar entropy (ΔdisS)) for α-LM in selected solvents were determined. The results indicate that ΔdisH/(J/mol) (from 0.2551 to 6.0575) and ΔdisS/(J/mol/K) (from 0.0010 to 0.0207) of α-LM in these solvents are all positive, and the values of ΔdisH and ΔdisS. ΔdisG/(J/mol) (from −0.0184 to −0.6380) are all negative. The values were observed to decrease with rising temperatures, implying that α-LM dissolution is an endothermic, entropy-driven, and spontaneous process. The preparation and self-assembling of monodisperse gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) is of great significance for its SERS application. According to the oleylamine-reduced method, oleylamine (OAm) serves as the reducing agent and stabilizing agent, and the effects of different reaction parameters such as solvent and temperature on the size and dispersity of Au NPs have been evaluated. The Au NPs synthesized with toluene as the solvent have the best dispersity and narrowest particle size distribution with adjustable sizes. The particle size gradually increases with the increase in reaction temperature. The highly ordered self-assembly film of Au NPs was employed as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate for the probing molecule of rhodamine 6G. The Au substrate exhibits excellent spatial uniformity and SERS reproducibility, which indicates its practicability as a substrate. This study provides a simple synthesis strategy of highly ordered monodispersed Au NPs, which can serve as a SERS substrate with excellent spatial uniformity and SERS re-producibility. Cyclic pentaphenylalanine was studied as an efficient anion sensor for halides, thiocyanate and oxoanions in acetonitrile and methanol. Stability constants of the corresponding complexes were determined by means of fluorimetric, spectrophotometric, 1H NMR, and microcalorimetric titrations. A detailed structural overview of receptor–anion complexes was obtained by classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The results of 1H NMR and MD studies indicated that the bound anions were coordinated by the amide groups of cyclopeptide, as expected. Circular dichroism (CD) titrations were also carried out in acetonitrile. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of the detection of anion binding by cyclopeptide using CD spectroscopy. The CD spectra were calculated from the structures obtained by MD simulations and were qualitatively in agreement with the experimental data. The stoichiometry of almost all complexes was 1:1 (receptor:anion), except for dihydrogen phosphate where the binding of dihydrogen phosphate dimer was observed in acetonitrile. The solvent effect in the catalytic depolymerization of the three-dimensional network of lignin is discussed based on recent reports in this field. Also, the results of an experimental study on the depolymerization of kraft lignin are presented. The cleavage of ether bonds within the lignin network was promoted using ruthenium and platinum on activated carbon (Ru/C and Pt/C), two common hydrogenolysis catalysts. Methanol was identified as a suitable solvent. Noteworthy, under the chosen reaction conditions, the catalysts showed significant resilience to the sulfur present in kraft lignin. The conversion of kraft lignin to lignin oil was strongly affected by the reaction conditions. Although the Ru/C catalyst provided the highest yield at supercritical conditions, a maximum yield was obtained for the Pt/C catalyst at near-critical conditions. The formation of guaiacol, 4-alkylguaiacols, isoeugenol, and 4-ethyl-2,6-dimethoxyphenol is attributed to the solubility of oligomeric lignin fragments in the solvent and the relative propensity of specific groups to adsorb on the catalyst surface. The different activity of a 1% Pd/carbon catalyst towards aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes hydrogenation has been explored by 13C NMR relaxation. The ratio between T1 relaxation times of adsorbed (ads) and free diffusing (bulk) molecules (T1ads/T1bulk) can be used as an indicator of the relative strength of interaction between the reactant and the catalytic surface, where the lower the T1ads/T1bulk, the higher the adsorption strength. It can be seen that 1% Pd/carbon showed a reverse catalytic behaviour towards benzaldehyde and octanal hydrogenation, which can be explained by analysing the T1 relaxation times related to each substrate in the presence of the catalyst. Comparing and correlating the different T1ads/T1bulk values, we were able to prove that the different catalytic results mainly depend on the contrasting adsorption behaviour of substrates on the catalyst. Moreover, the role of the solvent has been disclosed, as NMR results revealed that the adsorption of the reactants was strongly affected by the choice of solvent, which is revealed to be critical in modulating catalytic activity. The past two decades have seen considerable attention given to chemical sensing due to its quick, reproducible, and accurate results. These are extensively used for the detection of cations and anions in different environmental matrices. Organic-molecule-based sensors have proved to be a great promising tool in determining target species. This communication demonstrates the use of triphenylether derivatives (L1-L4) as receptors for the sensing of cations and anions, using voltammetry as a sensing tool. The effect of the oxidative/reductive nature of the ionophores and, hence, their selectivity behavior was studied in MeCN and MeOH solvents. Three receptors (L2-L4) responded selectively towards cyanide ions following the intramolecular charge-transfer mechanism, while sensing in the case of L1 was not studied because it lacked a proper cavity size. This study presents the potential role of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) in a lipase-catalyzed hydrolysis reaction as a co-solvent in an aqueous solution given by a phosphate buffer. Ammonium salts, such as choline chloride, were paired with hydrogen bond donors, such as urea, 1,2,3-propanetriol, and 1,2 propanediol. The hydrolysis of p- nitrophenyl laureate was carried out with the lipase Candida antarctica Lipase B (CALB) as a reaction model to evaluate the solvent effect and tested in different DES/buffer phosphate mixtures at different % w/w. The results showed that two mixtures of different DES at 25 % w/w were the most promising solvents, as this percentage enhanced the activities of CALB, as evidenced by its higher catalytic efficiency (kcatKM). The solvent analysis shows that the enzymatic reaction requires a reaction media rich in water molecules to enable hydrogen-bond formation from the reaction media toward the enzymatic reaction, suggesting a better interaction between the substrate and the enzyme-active site. This interaction could be attributed to high degrees of freedom influencing the enzyme conformation given by the reaction media, suggesting that CALB acquires a more restrictive structure in the presence of DES or the stabilized network given by the hydrogen bond from water molecules in the mixture improves the enzymatic activity, conferring conformational stability by solvent effects. This study offers a promising approach for applications and further perspectives on genuinely green industrial solvents.

Four new solvent-induced Co(II) complexes with chemical formulae [{CoL(μ2-OAc)(MeOH)}2Co] (1), [{CoL(μ2-OAc)(EtOH)}2Co] (2), [{CoL(μ2-OAc)(Py)}2Co] (3) and [{CoL(μ2-OAc)(DMF)}2Co] (4) (H2L = 4-nitro-4'-chloro-2,2'-[(1,3-propylene)dioxybis (nitrilomethylidyne)]diphenol) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, FT-IR, UV-Vis spectra and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Each of the prepared complexes, crystallizing in the space groups P-1 (1 and 4), P21/n (2) and P21/c (3), consists of three Co(II) atoms, two completely deprotonated (L)2- units, two μ-acetato ligands and two coordinated solvent molecules. Although the four complexes 1-4 were synthesized in different solvents, it is worthwhile that the Co(II) atoms in the four complexes 1-4 adopt hexa-coordinated with slightly distorted octahedral coordination geometries, and the ratio of the ligand H2L to Co(II) atoms is 2:3. Two series of catalysts were prepared by sol-gel and microemulsion synthetic procedure (SG and ME, respectively). Each series includes both pure Mg and Zr solids as well as Mg-Zr mixed solids with 25%, 50% and 75% nominal Zr content. The whole set of catalysts was characterized from thermal, structural and surface chemical points of view and subsequently applied to the liquid-phase xylose dehydration to furfural. Reactions were carried out in either a high-pressure autoclave or in an atmospheric pressure multi-reactor under a biphasic (organic/water) reaction mixture. Butan-2-ol and toluene were essayed as organic solvents. Catalysts prepared by microemulsion retained part of the surfactant used in the synthetic procedure, mainly associated with the Zr part of the solid. The MgZr-SG solid presented the highest surface acidity while the Mg3Zr-SG one exhibited the highest surface basicity among mixed systems. Xylose dehydration in the high-pressure system and with toluene/water solvent mixture led to the highest furfural yield. Moreover, the yield of furfural increases with the Zr content of the catalyst. Therefore, the catalysts constituted of pure ZrO2 (especially Zr-SG) are the most suitable to carry out the process under study although MgZr mixed solids could be also suitable for overall processes with additional reaction steps. The geometries and energies of factor Xa inhibitors edoxaban, eribaxaban, fidexaban, darexaban, letaxaban, and the dual factor Xa and thrombin inhibitors tanogitran and SAR107375 in both the gas-phase and aqueous solution were studied using the Becke3LYP/6-31++G(d,p) or Grimme's B97D/6-31++G(d,p) method. The fully optimized conformers of these anticoagulants show a characteristic L-shape structure, and the water had a remarkable effect on the equilibrium geometry. According to the calculated pKa values eribaxaban and letaxaban are in neutral undissociated form at pH 7.4, while fidexaban and tanogitran exist as zwitterionic structures. The lipophilicity of the inhibitors studied lies within a large range of log P between 1 and 4. The dual inhibitor SAR107375 represents an improvement in structural, physicochemical and pharmacokinetic characteristics over tanogitran. At blood pH, SAR107375 predominantly exists in neutral form. The crystal structure of 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaiso-wurtzitane (CL-20) p-xylene solvate, and the solvent effects on the crystal faces of CL-20 were studied through a combined experimental and theoretical method. The properties were analyzed by thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD).The growth morphology of CL-20p-xylene solvate crystal was predicted with a modified attachment energy model. The crystal structure of CL-20p-xylene solvate belonged to the Pbca space group with the unit cell parameters, a = 8.0704(12) Å, b=13.4095(20) Å, c = 33.0817(49) Å, and Z = 4, which indicated that the p-xylene solvent molecules could enter the crystal lattice of CL-20 and thus the CL-20 p-xylene solvate is formed. According to the solvent-effected attachment energy calculations, (002) and (11-1) faces should not be visible at all, while the percentage area of the (011) face could be increased from 7.81% in vacuum to 12.51% in p-xylene solution. Intramolecular hydrogen bond (HB) formation was analyzed in the model compounds N-(2-benzoylphenyl)acetamide, N-(2-benzoylphenyl)oxalamate and N1,N2-bis(2-benzoylphenyl)oxalamide. The formation of three-center hydrogen bonds in oxalyl derivatives was demonstrated in the solid state by the X-ray diffraction analysis of the geometric parameters associated with the molecular structures. The solvent effect on the chemical shift of H6 [δH6(DMSO-d6)–δH6(CDCl3)] and Δδ(ΝΗ)/ΔT measurements, in DMSO-d6 as solvent, have been used to establish the energetics associated with intramolecular hydrogen bonding. Two center intramolecular HB is not allowed in N-(2-benzoylphenyl)acetamide either in the solid state or in DMSO-d6 solution because of the unfavorable steric effects of the o-benzoyl group. The estimated ΔH° and ΔS° values for the hydrogen bonding disruption by DMSO-d6 of 28.3(0.1) kJ·mol-1 and 69.1(0.4) J·mol-1·K-1 for oxalamide, are in agreement with intramolecular three-center hydrogen bonding in solution. In the solid, the benzoyl group contributes to develop 1-D and 2-D crystal networks, through C–H•••A (A = O, π) and dipolar C=O•••A (A = CO, π) interactions, in oxalyl derivatives. The photolysis of four typical NBFRs, hexabromobenzene (HBB), pentabromotoluene (PBT), pentabromobenzyl acrylateare (PBBA) and pentabromoethylbenzene (PBEB), were explored under different irradiation light wavelengths, initial concentrations and organic solvents. Density functional theory was used for chemical calculation to explore the internal mechanism of solvent effect. All degradation kinetics conformed to the first-order kinetic model. Under different irradiation light wavelengths, the degradation rates were in the following order: 180~400 nm (0.1702~0.3008 min -1 ) > 334~365 nm (0.0265~0.0433 min -1 ) > 400~700 nm (0.0058~0.0099 min -1 ). When the initial concentration varied from 0.25 mg/L to 1 mg/L, the degradation rate decreased from 0.0379~0.0784 min -1 to 0.0265~0.0433 min -1 under 334~365 nm irradiation, which might be attributed to the reduction in light energy received per unit area and competition from intermediate metabolites. In different organic solvents, the degradation rates were in the order of acetone (0.1702~0.3008 min -1 ) > toluene (0.0408~0.0534 min -1 ) > n-hexane (0.0124~0.0299 min -1 ). Quantum chemical calculation and analysis showed that the energy change in electron transfer between solvent and NBFRs was the key factor to solvent effect in the degradation of NBFRs. The active sites and degradation pathways of NBFRs were also speculated, the nucleophilic reaction of the Br atom on a benzene ring was the main process of photodegradation and it was preferential to remove the bromine and then the ethyl group on the benzene ring. Our research will be helpful in predicting and evaluating their photochemical behavior in different environment conditions.

The absorption and fluorescence spectra of substituted coumarins (2-oxo-2H-chromenes) were investigated in solvents and in polymer matrices. The substitutions involved were: (1) by groups with varying electron donating ability such as CH3, OCH3 and N(CH3)2, mainly, but not exclusively, in positions 7 and (2), by either CHO or 4-PhNHCONHN=CH- in position 3. While the spectra of non-substituted coumarin-3- carbaldehyde has absorptions at approximately 305 and 350 nm, substitution at position 7 leads to remarkable changes in the shape of the absorption spectrum and shifts the absorption to a longer wavelength. Similarly, the replacement of the formyl group with a semicarbazide group substantially influences the shape of the absorption spectrum, and coumarins which have only N(CH3)2 in position 7 experience small changes. These changes are associated with the increasing intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) character and increasing conjugation length of the chromophoric system, respectively, in the studied molecules. The fluorescence is almost negligible for derivatives which have H in this position. With increasing electron donating ability, and the possibility of a positive mesomeric (+M) effect of the substituent in position 7 of the coumarin moiety, the fluorescence increases, and this increase is most intense when N(CH3)2 substitutes in this position, for both 3-substituted derivatives. Spectral measurements of the studied coumarins in polymer matrices revealed that the absorption and fluorescence maxima lay within the maxima for solvents, and that coumarins yield more intense fluorescence in polymer matrices than when they are in solution. The quantum yield of derivatives which have a dimethylamino group in position 7 in polymer matrices approaches 1, and the fluorescence lifetime is within the range of 0.5-4 ns. The high quantum yield of 7-dimethylamino derivatives qualifies them as laser dyes which have kF higher than knr in the given medium. This is caused by stiffening of the coumarin structure in polar polymer matrices, such as PMMA and PVC, due to higher micro-viscosity than in solution and intermolecular dipole-dipole interaction between chromophore (dopant) and matrix. Absorption and fluorescence spectra of bichromophoric coumarins were investigated in different solvents and in polymer matrices. These bichromophoric coumarins were composed of a coumarin dimethylamino-substituted at position 7 or unsubstituted coumarin and phthalimide or a 1,8-naphthylimide linked with an iminomethyl bridge to the position 3 or 8 of the coumarin ring. Absorption spectra of 7- dimethylamino derivatives in position 3 of coumarin were quite similar, exhibiting broad bands around 430-440 nm like the parent compound 7-dimethylaminocoumarin-3- carbaldehyde. For coumarin derivatives substituted in position 8, the absorption maximum was shifted to shorter wavelength as for derivatives without position 7 dimethylamino substitution. The most intense fluorescence was observed for 7-(N,N-dimethylamino)-3- [(N-phtalimidoyl)iminomethyl]coumarin in polar solvent, while intense fluorescence was observed for 7-(N,N-dimethylamino)-3-[N-(1,3-dioxobenz[de]isoquinolinyl)iminomethyl]- coumarin in non polar solvent (chloroform), comparable with the fluorescence of 7-amino- 4-methylcoumarin. Spectral measurements of bichromophoric coumarins in polymer matrices revealed that the maxima lies in between those for chloroform and methanol yielding more intense fluorescence then in solutions. Completely different solvent effects were observed for 7-(N,N-dimethylamino)-3-[N-(1,3-dioxobenz[de]isoquinolinyl)iminomethyl] coumarin and 7-(N,N-dimethylamino)-3-[(N-phtalimidoyl)iminomethyl]coumarin. With addition of polar methanol the intensity of fluorescence decreases, yielding a Stern- Volmer-like constant of 0.54 dm³ mol-1 for 7-(N,N-dimethylamino)-3-[N-(1,3-dioxobenz[ de]isoquinolinyl)iminomethyl]coumarin and an even higher one of 1.08 dm³·mol-1 for 7-dimethylaminocoumarin-3-carbaldehyde compared to the rather low one of 0.024 dm³ mol-1 for 7-amino-4-methylcoumarin. Contrary to this, addition of methanol under identical conditions brings about an increase in fluorescence intensity of 7-(N,Ndimethylamino)- 3-[(N-phtalimidoyl)iminomethyl]coumarin (about 60-fold). A solvent effect towards the performance of two single-molecule magnets (SMMs) was observed. The tetrahydrofuran and toluene solvents can switch the equatorial coordinated 4-Phenylpyridine (4-PhPy) molecules from five to four, respectively, in [Dy(OtBu)2(4-PhPy)5]BPh41 and Na{[Dy(OtBu)2(4-PhPy)4][BPh4]2}∙2thf∙hex 2. This alternation significantly changes the local coordination symmetry of the Dy(III) center from D5h to D4h for 1 and 2, seperately. Magnetic studies show that the magnetic anisotropy energy barrier of 2 is higher than that of 1, while the relation of blocking temperature is just on the contrary due to the symmetry effect. The calculations of the electrostatic potential successfully explained the driving force of solvents for the molecular structure change, confirming the feasibility of adjusting the performance of SMMs via diverse solvents. The solvent effect on the stability and electron-accepting properties (EA) of the nitro group attached to the C2, C6, or C8 position of nitropurine NH tautomers is investigated. For this purpose, the density functional theory (DFT) and the polarizable continuum model (PCM) of solvation in a wide range of solvents (1 < ε < 109) are used. We show that the EA properties of the NO2 group, described by the charge of the substituent active region (cSAR) model, are linearly dependent on the reciprocal of the solvent dielectric constant; in all cases, solvation enhances the EA properties of this group. Furthermore, the sensitivity of EA properties of the nitro group to the solvent effect depends on the proximity effects. It has been shown that the proximity of two endocyclic N atoms (two repulsive interactions) results in higher sensitivity than the asymmetric proximity of the endocyclic N atom and NH group (one repulsive and one attractive interaction). To explain this phenomenon, the geometry of the nitro group in coplanar form and after forcing its rotation around the CN bond is discussed. Relative stabilities of nitropurine tautomers in different solvents are also presented. Fabrication of surfactant-modified DNA thin films with high uniformity, specifically DNA–CTMA, has been well considered via drop-casting and spin-coating techniques. However, the fabrication of thin films with pure DNA has not been sufficiently studied. We characterize the uniformity of thin films from aqueous salmon DNA solutions mixed with ethanol, methanol, isopropanol, and acetone. Measurements of thickness and macroscopic uniformity are made via a focused-beam ellipsometer. We discuss important parameters for optimum uniformity and note what the effects of solvent modifications are. We find that methanol- and ethanol-added solutions provide optimal fabrication methods, which more consistently produce high degrees of uniformity with film thickness ranging from 20 to 200 nm adjusted by DNA concentration and the physical parameters of spin-coating methods. Due to the rigid structure of 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane (PTA), its 31P chemical shift solely depends on non-covalent interactions in which the molecule is involved. The maximum range of change caused by the most common of these, hydrogen bonding, is only 6 ppm, because the active site is one of the PTA nitrogen atoms. In contrast, when the PTA phosphorus atom is coordinated to a metal, the range of change exceeds 100 ppm. This feature can be used to support or reject specific structural models of organometallic transition metal complexes in solution by comparing the experimental and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculated values of this 31P chemical shift. An implicit account of the solvent effect can be carried out using traditional static quantum chemistry calculations by applying an external electric field to the studied molecular system. This approach allows one to distinguish between the effects of the macroscopic reaction field of the solvent and specific solute–solvent interactions. In this study, we report on the dependence of the simulation results on the use of the polarizable continuum approximation and on the importance of the solvent effect in nonpolar solvents. The latter was demonstrated using experimental data on tautomeric equilibria between the pyridone and hydroxypyridine forms of 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxy-pyridine in cyclohexane and chloroform. Keto-enol prototropic conversions for carbonyl compounds and phenols have been extensively studied, and many interesting review articles and even books appeared in the last 50 years. Quite a different situation takes place for derivatives of biologically active azulene, for which only scanty information on this phenomenon can be found in the literature. In this work, quantum-chemical studies have been undertaken for symmetrically and unsymmetrically substituted azulenols (constitutional isomers of naphthols). Stabilities of two enol (OH) rotamers and all possible keto (CH) tautomers have been analyzed in the gas phase {DFT(B3LYP)/6-311+G(d,p)} and also in aqueous solution {PCM(water)//DFT(B3LYP)/6-311+G(d,p)}. Contrary to naphthols, for which the keto forms can be neglected, at least one keto isomer (C1H, C2H, and/or C3H) contributes significantly to the tautomeric mixture of each azulenol to a higher degree in vacuo (non-polar environment) than in water (polar amphoteric solvent). The highest amounts of the CH forms have been found for 2- and 5-hydroxyazulenes, and the smallest ones for 1- and 6-hydroxy derivatives. The keto tautomer(s), together with the enol rotamers, can also participate in deprotonation reaction leading to a common anion and influence its acid-base properties. The strongest acidity in vacuo exhibits 6-hydroxyazulene, and the weakest one displays 1-hydroxyazulene, but all azulenols are stronger acids than phenol and naphthols. Bond length alternation in all DFT-optimized structures has been measured using the harmonic oscillator model of electron delocalization (HOMED) index. Generally, the HOMED values decrease for the keto tautomers, particularly for the ring containing the labile proton. Even for the keto tautomers possessing energetic parameters close to those of the enol isomers, the HOMED indices are low. The lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is one of the promising energy storage alternatives because of its high theoretical capacity and energy density. Factors governing the stability of polysulfide intermediates in Li-S batteries are complex and are strongly affected by the solvent used. Herein, the polysulfide reduction and the bond cleavage reactions are calculated in different solvent environments by the density functional theory (DFT) methods. We investigate the relationship between the donor numbers (DN) as well as the dielectric constants (ε) of the solvent system and the relative stability of different polysulfide intermediates. This work could help to better understand the solvent effects on crystal habits and aspect ratio changes at the molecular level, which provide some guidance for solvent selection in industrial crystallization processes. With the catechol crystal habits acquired using both experimental and simulation methods in isopropanol, methyl acetate and ethyl acetate, solvent effects on crystal morphology were explored based on the modified attachment energy model. Firstly, morphologically dominant crystal faces were obtained with the predicted crystal habit in vacuum. Then, modified attachment energies were calculated by the molecular dynamics simulation to modify the crystal shapes in a real solvent environment, and the simulation results were in agreement with the experimental ones. Meanwhile, the surface properties such as roughness and the diffusion coefficient were introduced to analyze the solvent adsorption behaviors and the radial distribution function curves were generated to distinguish diverse types of interactions like hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces. Results show that the catechol crystal habits were affected by the combination of the attachment energy, surface structures and molecular interaction types. Moreover, the changing aspect ratios of catechol crystals are closely related to the existence of hydrogen bonds which contribute to growth inhibition on specific faces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The fluorescent base guanine analog, 8-vinyl-deoxyguanosine (8vdG), is studied in solution using a combination of optical spectroscopies, notably femtosecond fluorescence upconversion and quantum chemical calculations, based on time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and including solvent effect by using a mixed discrete-continuum model. In all investigated solvents, the fluorescence is very long lived (3–4 ns), emanating from a stable excited state minimum with pronounced intramolecular charge-transfer character. The main non-radiative decay channel features a sizeable energy barrier and it is affected by the polarity and the H-bonding properties of the solvent. Calculations provide a picture of dynamical solvation effects fully consistent with the experimental results and show that the photophysical properties of 8vdG are modulated by the orientation of the vinyl group with respect to the purine ring, which in turn depends on the solvent. The location of a mobile proton in acid-base complexes in aprotic solvents can be predicted using a simplified Adduct under Field (AuF) approach, where solute–solvent effects on the geometry of hydrogen bond are simulated using a fictitious external electric field. The parameters of the field have been estimated using experimental data on acid-base complexes in CDF3/CDClF2. With some limitations, they can be applied to the chemically similar CHCl3 and CH2Cl2. The obtained data indicate that the solute–solvent effects are critically important regardless of the type of complexes. We investigate the effects of water addition on a highly stereocontrolled fluorination of dienamine generated by α-branched enals and 6′-hydroxy-9-amino-9-deoxy-epi-quinidine with N-fluorobenzenesulfonimide (NFSI) in the presence of Brønsted acid both experimentally and theoretically. It is experimentally found that water addition to organic solvent significantly shortens the reaction time whereas excessive water addition decreases the enantiomeric excess. The results calculated with three-dimensional reference interaction site model self-consistent field (3D-RISM-SCF) method are in good agreement with the experimental ones. It is revealed that the shortness of reaction time is caused by the reactant destabilization and that the decrease in enantiomeric excess is due to the difference of hydration free energy between two transition states. Herein, poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) nanofiber-based organic field-effect transistors were successfully prepared by coaxial electrospinning technique with P3HT as the core polymer and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as the shell polymer, followed by extraction of PMMA. Three different solvents for the core polymer, including chloroform, chlorobenzene and 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene, were employed to manipulate the morphologies and electrical properties of P3HT electrospun nanofibers. Through the analyses from dynamic light scattering of P3HT solutions, polarized photoluminescence and X-ray diffraction pattern of P3HT electrospun nanofibers, it is revealed that the P3HT electrospun nanofiber prepared from the chloroform system displays a low crystallinity but highly oriented crystalline grains due to the dominant population of isolated-chain species in solution that greatly facilitates P3HT chain stretching during electrospinning. The resulting high charge-carrier mobility of 3.57 × 10−1 cm2·V−1·s−1 and decent mechanical deformation up to a strain of 80% make the P3HT electrospun nanofiber a promising means for fabricating stretchable optoelectronic devices. The self-assembly of an amphiphilic Y-shaped copolymer consisting of two hydrophilic branches and one hydrophobic branch in a thin film is investigated under different conditions by virtue of mesoscopic computer modelling, accompanied by doping with a single solvent, doping with a binary solvent, and those solvent environments together with the introduction of confinement defined by various acting distances and influencing regions. A cylindrical micellar structure is maintained, as it is in the thin film with the doping of either 10% hydrophobic solvent or 10% hydrophilic solvent, whose structure consists of the hydrophobic core and hydrophilic shell. Attributed to the hydrophobicity/hydrophilia nature of the solvents, different solvents play an obvious role on the self-assembled structure, i.e., the hydrophobic solvent presents as a swelling effect, conversely, the hydrophilic solvent presents as a shrinking effect. Further, the synergistic effect of the binary solvents on the self-assembly produces the lowest values in both the average volumetric size and free energy density when the quantity of hydrophobic solvent and hydrophilic solvent is equivalent. Interestingly, the solvent effect becomes more pronounced under the existent of a confinement. When a lateral-oriented confinement is introduced, a periodically fluctuating change in the cylindrical size occurs in two near-wall regions, but the further addition of either hydrophobic or hydrophilic solvent can effectively eliminate such resulting hierarchical-sized cylinders and generate uniform small-sized cylinders. However, with the introduction of a horizontal-orientated confinement, the copolymers self-assemble into the spherical micellar structure. The nanoscale morphology of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and [6]-phenyl-C71. butyric acid methylester (PCBM) blend film is affected by various parameters such as the solvent, coating, and thermal annealing conditions. We investigated the effect of solvents on the performance of inverted solar cells based on the active layer of a P3HT:PCBM bulk heterojunction. P3HT and PCBM (weight ratio 1:0.8) were dissolved in chlorobenzene (CB) and dichlorobenzene (DCB). The difference in the volatility characteristics of the solvents resulted in different P3HT crystallite morphologies. The difference in the P3HT:PCBM film morphology was systemically investigated via atomic force microscopy, ultraviolet (UV)-visible absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and electrical impedance spectroscopy. The DCB solvent lead to better P3HT crystallinity and device performance. For example, the short-circuit current density (JSC) and the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the device using DCB (9.89 mA/cm2 and 3.62%, respectively) were larger than those (9.12 mA/cm2 and 3.01%) of the device using CB.
