The integration of smart buildings (SBs) into smart cities (SCs) is critical to urban development, with the potential to improve SCs' performance. Artificial intelligence (AI) applications have emerged as a promising tool to enhance SB and SC development. The authors apply an AI-based methodology, particularly Large Language Models of OpenAI ChatGPT-3 and Google Bard as AI experts, to uniquely evaluate 26 criteria that represent SB services across five SC infrastructure domains (energy, mobility, water, waste management, and security), emphasizing their contributions to the integration of SB into SC and quantifying their impact on the efficiency, resilience, and environmental sustainability of SC. The framework was then validated through two rounds of the Delphi method, leveraging human expert knowledge and an iterative consensus-building process. The framework's efficiency in analyzing complicated information and generating important insights is demonstrated via five case studies. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the effects of SB services on SC infrastructure domains, highlighting the intricate nature of SC, as well as revealing areas that require further integration to realize the SC performance objectives. This study proposes a simulation-based methodology for estimating the energy saving achievable through the implementation of a just-in-time morning ramp-up procedure in a warehouse (equipped with a heat pump). In this methodology, the operation of the heating supply unit each day is initiated at a different time, aiming at achieving the desired setpoint upon (and not before) the expected arrival of the occupants. It requires the estimation of the ramp-up duration (the time it takes the heating system to bring the indoor temperature to the desired setpoint), which can be provided by machine learning-based models. To justify the corresponding required deployment investment, an accurate estimation of the resulting achievable energy saving is needed. Accordingly, physics-based energy behavior simulations are first performed. Next, various ML algorithms are employed to estimate the ramp-up duration using the simulated time-series data of indoor temperature, setpoints, and weather conditions. It is shown that the proposed pipelines can estimate the ramp-up duration with a mean absolute error of about 3 min in all indoor spaces. To assess the resulting potential energy saving, a re-simulation is conducted using ML-based ramp-up estimations for each day, resulting in an energy savings of approximately 10%. The rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) has enabled the development of smart cities, intelligent buildings, and advanced industrial ecosystems. When the IoT is matched with machine learning (ML), the advantages of the resulting enhanced environments can span, for example, from energy optimization to security improvement and comfort enhancement. Together, IoT and ML technologies are widely used in smart buildings, in particular, to reduce energy consumption and create Intelligent Energy-Efficient Buildings (IEEBs). In IEEBs, ML models are typically used to analyze and predict various factors such as temperature, humidity, light, occupancy, and human behavior with the aim of optimizing building systems. In the literature, many review papers have been presented so far in the field of IEEBs. Such papers mostly focus on specific subfields of ML or on a limited number of papers. This paper presents a systematic meta-survey, i.e., a review of review articles, that compares the state of the art in the field of IEEBs using the Prisma approach. In more detail, our meta-survey aims to give a broader view, with respect to the already published surveys, of the state-of-the-art in the IEEB field, investigating the use of supervised, unsupervised, semi-supervised, and self-supervised models in a variety of IEEB-based scenarios. Moreover, our paper aims to compare the already published surveys by answering five important research questions about IEEB definitions, architectures, methods/models used, datasets and real implementations utilized, and main challenges/research directions defined. The explicit demand response (DR) is a key program for reinforcing the participation of end customers and making the most out of the potential of the smart grid. The DR is a key topic in the field of buildings to make use of the flexibility that they can offer. However, in order to guarantee the correct functionality of a DR system, it is fundamental to perform interoperability tests among the various components/actors. In this paper, we take into consideration the technological solutions suggested in the framework of the DRIMPAC project to enable the DR in buildings. We consider all actors/devices involved in order to reach the objective of executing a flexibility order by an asset. Following a structured interoperability testing methodology created by the Joint Research Centre, we perform interoperability tests regarding all critical links of the full chain of interacting actors to obtain the DR in buildings. The results show that the system functions properly and the benefits from the DR can be exploited. Smart buildings play a key role in the complex ecosystem of cities and are often subject to barriers that limit their development. Although identifying these barriers is fundamental to creating an enabling environment for this segment's expansion, few works aim to identify these challenges. This work has two main objectives: (1) to research the main barriers limiting the development of new smart building projects and (2) to prioritize these barriers from the perspective of professionals with experience in the field. We adopted an exploratory approach common in research that focuses on identifying and prioritizing variables related to a phenomenon, which is based on two main actions: obtaining information through a careful literature review and consulting professionals who work in the concerned field. The results showed that professionals assessed the 23 barriers identified through bibliographic research as important, with the most important being related to lack of qualified professionals, shortage of government policies, higher initial and construction costs, macroeconomic barriers and access to financing, high cost of intelligent systems and technologies, regulatory barriers, lack of knowledge about the current and potential benefits of smart buildings, and more complex design and construction. The building sector, known for its high energy consumption, needs to reduce its energy use due to rising greenhouse gas emissions. To attain this goal, a projection for domestic energy usage is needed. This work optimizes short-term load forecasting (STLF) in the building sector while considering several variables (energy consumption/generation, weather information, etc.) that impact energy use. It performs a comparative analysis of various machine learning (ML) models based on different data resolutions and time steps ahead (15 min, 30 min, and 1 h with 4-step-, 2-step-, and 1-step-ahead, respectively) to identify the most accurate prediction method. Performance assessment showed that models like histogram gradient-boosting regression (HGBR), light gradient-boosting machine regression (LGBMR), extra trees regression (ETR), ridge regression (RR), Bayesian ridge regression (BRR), and categorical boosting regression (CBR) outperformed others, each for a specific resolution. Model performance was reported using R 2 , root mean square error (RMSE), coefficient of variation of RMSE (CVRMSE), normalized RMSE (NRMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and execution time. The best overall model performance indicated that the resampled 1 h 1-step-ahead prediction was more accurate than the 15 min 4-step-ahead and the 30 min 2-step-ahead predictions. Over the years, a rapid evolution of smart grids has been witnessed across the world due to their intelligent operations and control, smart characteristics, and benefits, which can overcome several difficulties of traditional electric grids. However, due to multifaceted technological advancements, the development of smart grids is evolving day by day. Thus, smart grid researchers need to understand and adapt to new concepts and research trends. Understanding these new trends in smart grids is essential for several reasons, as the energy sector undergoes a major transformation towards becoming energy efficient and resilient. Moreover, it is imperative to realize the complete potential of modernizing the energy infrastructure. In this regard, this paper presents a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of smart grid concepts and research trends. In the initial search, the bibliometric data extracted from the Scopus and Web of Science databases totaled 11,600 and 2846 records, respectively. After thorough scrutiny, 2529 unique records were considered for the bibliometric analysis. Bibliometric analysis is a systematic method used to analyze and evaluate the scholarly literature on a particular topic and provides valuable insights to researchers. The proposed analysis provides key information on emerging research areas, high-impact sources, authors and their collaboration, affiliations, annual production of various countries and their collaboration in smart grids, and topic-wise title count. This paper introduces an efficient barrier model for enhancing smart building surveillance in harsh environment with thin walls and structures. After the main research problem of minimizing the total number of wall-recognition surveillance barriers, we propose two distinct algorithms, Centralized Node Deployment and Adaptation Node Deployment, which are designed to address the challenge by strategic placement of surveillance nodes within the smart building. The Centralized Node Deployment aligns nodes along the thin walls, ensuring consistent communication coverage and effectively countering potential disruptions. Conversely, the Adaptation Node Deployment begins with random node placement, which adapts over time to ensure efficient communication across the building. The novelty of this work is in designing a novel barrier system to achieve energy efficiency and reinforced surveillance in a thin-wall environment. Instead of a real environment, we use an ad hoc server for simulations with various scenarios and parameters. Then, two different algorithms are executed through those simulation environments and settings. Also, with detailed discussions, we provide the performance analysis, which shows that both algorithms deliver similar performance metrics over extended periods, indicating their suitability for long-term operation in smart infrastructure. It is estimated that over 125 billion heterogeneous and homogeneous Internet of Things (IoT) devices will be internet-connected by 2030. This significant increase will generate large data volumes, posing a global problem for Cloud–Fog computing infrastructures. The current literature uses synthetic data in the iFogSim2 simulation toolkit; however, this study bridges the gap using real-world data to reflect and address the real-world issue. Smart IoT device data are captured, compared, and evaluated in a fixed and scalable scenario at both the Cloud and Fog layers, demonstrating the improved benefits achievable in energy consumption, latency, and network bandwidth usage within a smart office building. Real-world IoT device data evaluation results demonstrate that Fog computing is more efficient than Cloud computing, with increased scalability and data volume in a fixed- and low-bandwidth smart building architecture. This indicates a direct correlation between the increase in devices and the increase in efficiency within a scalable scenario, while the fixed architecture overall shows the inverse due to the low device numbers used in this study. The results indicate improved energy savings and significant improvements of up to 84.41% and 38.95% in network latency and usage, respectively, within a fixed architecture, while scalability analysis demonstrates improvements up to 4%, 91.38% and 34.78% for energy, latency, and network usage, respectively. Fog computing improvements are limited within a fixed smart building architecture with relatively few IoT devices. This research seeks to improve the temperature control of AHU in building sub-levels using optimization algorithms. Specifically, the study applies the FA and PSO algorithms to optimize the PID control of AHU's temperature. The study addresses the issue of temperature control in building sub-levels, which is a common challenge in HVAC systems. The study uses optimization algorithms and a nonlinear model to improve temperature control and reduce fluctuations in temperature from the desired setting. Additionally, a NL-ARX algorithm is utilized to create a nonlinear model based on the thermal dynamics and energy behavioral patterns of ACMV cooling systems. The study evaluates the performance of three controllers—PID, FA-PID, and PSO-PID—based on ITSE as a performance index. The study compares the performance of these controllers to achieve the desired temperature setting, and it analyses the influence of temperature regulation on occupant comfort levels. In this study, we compare different controllers using ITSE as a performance indicator. This shows how well different optimization algorithms work at setting the right temperature. The research gap is the lack of efficient temperature control solutions in building sub-levels that can optimize occupant comfort and energy efficiency. The experimental findings confirm that PSO-PID outperforms conventional PID and FA-PID optimization in terms of achieving the goal objective via computational complexity. Smart buildings, integral components of modern urban landscapes, are confronted with diverse vulnerabilities that jeopardize system robustness, cybersecurity, data confidentiality, and the well-being of the occupants. This work aimed to identify and evaluate vulnerabilities specific to smart buildings, introducing an innovative assessment approach leveraging the Shodan tool. The analysis comprised three stages: information collection, result extraction using Shodan, and vulnerability identification, culminating in a comprehensive evaluation. This study pioneers the use of Shodan for smart building vulnerability detection, together with databases and associated nomenclature, to serve as a robust foundational tutorial for future research. The findings yielded a meticulous analysis of primary security risks inherent in building systems, advocating for implementing targeted measures to mitigate potential impacts. Additionally, this study proposes an evaluation methodology encompassing metrics to gauge the effect of vulnerabilities on integrity, availability, and scope. By addressing insecure configurations, deployment inadequacies, and suboptimal cybersecurity practices, this framework fortifies smart buildings against potential threats. As new algorithms incorporate occupancy count information into more sophisticated HVAC control, these technologies offer great potential for reductions in energy costs while enhancing flexibility. This study presents results from a two-year field evaluation of an occupancy-based HVAC control system installed in an office building. Two wings on each of the building's 2–11 floors were equipped with occupancy counters to learn occupancy patterns. In combination with proprietary machine learning algorithms and thermal modeling, the occupancy data were leveraged to implement optimized start, early closure, and adjustments to fan operation at the air handling unit (AHU) level. This study conducted a holistic evaluation of technical performance, cost-effectiveness analysis, and user satisfaction. Results show the platform reduced weekday AHU run times by 2 h and 35 min per AHU per day during the pandemic time period. Simulation shows that 6.1% annual whole-building savings can be achieved when the building is fully occupied. The results are compared with prior studies, and potential drivers are discussed for future opportunities. The assessment results shed light on the expected in-the-field performance for researchers and industry stakeholders and enabled practical considerations as the technology strives to move beyond research-grade pilot trials into product-grade deployment. This work addresses the problem of quantifying opacity for discrete event systems. We consider a passive intruder who knows the overall structure of a system but has limited observational capabilities and tries to infer the secret of this system based on the captured information flow. Researchers have developed various approaches to quantify opacity to compensate for the lack of precision of qualitative opacity in describing the degree of security of a system. Most existing works on quantifying opacity study specified probabilistic problems in the framework of probabilistic systems, where the behaviors or states of a system are classified as secret or non-secret. In this work, we quantify opacity by a state-worth function, which associates each state of a system with the worth it carries. To this end, we present a novel category of opacity, called worthy opacity, characterizing whether the worth of information exposed to the outside world during the system's evolution is below a threshold. We first provide an online approach for verifying worthy opacity using the notion of a run matrix proposed in this research. Then, we investigate a class of systems satisfying the so-called 1-cycle returned property and present a worthy opacity verification algorithm for this class. This paper presents the design and implementation of a versatile IoT testbed utilizing the openHAB platform, along with various wireless interfaces, including Z-Wave, ZigBee, Wi-Fi, 4G-LTE (Long-Term Evolution), and IR (Infrared Radiation), and an array of sensors for motion, temperature, luminance, humidity, vibration, UV (ultraviolet), and energy consumption. First, the testbed architecture, setup, basic testing, and collected data results are described. Then, by showcasing a typical day in the laboratory, we illustrate the testbed's potential through the collection and analysis of data from multiple sensors. The study also explores the capabilities of the openHAB platform, including its robust persistence layer, event management, real-time monitoring, and customization. The construction industry has witnessed an increase in the use of digital tools and smart solutions, particularly in the realm of building energy automation. While realising the potential benefits of smart cities, a broader scope of smart initiatives is required to support the transition from smart buildings towards smart neighbourhoods, which are considered critical urban development units. To support the interplay of smart solutions between buildings and neighbourhoods, this study aimed to collect and review all the smart solutions presented in existing scientific articles, the technical literature, and realised European projects. These solutions were classified into two main sections, buildings and neighbourhoods, which were investigated through five domains: building-energy-related uses, renewable energy sources, water, waste, and open space management. The quantitative outcomes demonstrated the potential benefits of implementing smart solutions in areas ranging from buildings to neighbourhoods. Moreover, this research concluded that the true enhancement of energy conservation goes beyond the building's energy components and can be genuinely achieved by integrating intelligent neighbourhood elements owing to their strong interdependencies. Project manager competencies have been widely discussed in the literature. Although many works present lists of competencies for project managers, specific competencies for smart buildings were not found. This work aimed to identify the main competencies of project managers for the management of smart building projects. The methodology consisted of a two-step approach using the guidelines of preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) to perform broad and detailed bibliographic research. Initially, a literature review was carried out to identify the main research fields related to the management of smart building projects and the specificities of these fields that can influence the management of this type of project. Next, these specificities were related to the competencies of project managers mentioned in the literature, to identify a set of more relevant competencies for project managers of smart building projects. The results showed that the main research fields are related to scope, risks, costs, schedule, technologies and systems, sustainability, and general characterization, which consider objectives, barriers, challenges, and regulations. They also showed that the most relevant competencies for managing smart buildings projects are technical competencies, leadership, communication, budgeting, attitudes toward risk, strategic management, organization, and specifying real requirements. The 2030 zero-net emission target in the E.U. demands a significant improvement in the energy performance of the building stock. This study analyses the adoption of connected thermostats and Home energy-management system solutions (HEMS) as an effective means to tackle the residential energy footprint. It reviews the main features of HEMS systems in terms of technology, cross-study performances, and the obstacles to widespread adoption; the study adopts the case-study methodology to examine the impact on the Italian real estate stock at a regional level. A matrix of adoption scenarios assesses the potential benefits of global residential energy savings, weighted by local climatic variations, dimension, number of single dwellings, and average primary energy reduction per household. The operation of smart buildings (with solar, storage and suitable power routing infrastructure) can be optimized with the addition of parking stations for electric vehicles (EVs) with vehicle-to-everything (V2X) operations including vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), vehicle-to-building (V2B) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) operations. In this paper, a multi-objective optimization framework is proposed for the smart charging and discharging of EVs along with the maximization of revenue and savings of smart building (prosumers with solar power, a battery storage system and a parking station) and non-primary/ordinary buildings (consumers of electricity without solar power, a battery storage system and parking station). A mixed-integer linear program is developed to maximize the profits of smart buildings that have bilateral contracts with non-primary buildings. The optimized charging and discharging (V2X) of EVs at affordable rates utilizing solar power and a battery storage system in the smart building helps to manage the EV load during on-peak hours and prevent utility congestion. The results indicate that in addition to the 4–9% daily electricity cost reductions for non-primary buildings, a smart building can achieve up to 60% of the daily profits. This study addresses the pressing issue of energy consumption and efficiency in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), a region experiencing growing demand for energy resources. Temperature control plays a vital role in achieving energy efficiency; however, traditional control systems may struggle to adapt to the non-linear and time-varying characteristics of the problem. To tackle this challenge, a fuzzy petri net (FPN) controller is proposed as a more suitable solution that combines fuzzy logic (FL) and petri nets (PN) to model and simulate complex systems. The main objective of this research is to develop an intelligent energy-saving framework that integrates advanced methodologies and air conditioning (AC) systems to optimize energy utilization and create a comfortable indoor environment. The proposed system incorporates user identification to authorize individuals who can set the temperature, and FL combined with PN is utilized to monitor and transmit their preferred temperature settings to a PID controller for adjustment. The experimental findings demonstrate the effectiveness of integrating the FPN controller with a convertible frequency AC compressor in significantly reducing energy consumption by 94% compared to using the PN controller alone. The utilization of the PN controller alone resulted in a 25% reduction in energy consumption. Conversely, employing a fixed-frequency compressor led to a 40% increase in energy consumption. These results emphasize the advantages of integrating FL into the PN model, as it effectively reduces energy consumption by half, highlighting the potential of the proposed approach for enhancing energy efficiency in AC systems. The introduction of intelligent devices in buildings has brought about tremendous changes into the construction industry. The use of automation is also gradually gaining interest from the stakeholders involved in the built environment. This paper presents the perception of property stakeholders (property valuers/real estate developers and service users) regarding the acceptability of smart buildings as a future built environment in Nigeria, using Benin City a case study. A total of 159 structured questionnaires were administered with 108 retrieved and valid for analysis. The information sourced from the respondents includes smart building awareness, the support for, drivers to, and limitations of its implementation, the willingness to develop smart buildings, and the willingness to pay proportionate rent to occupy smart properties. The findings showed that the poll of respondents for the property valuers and the real estate developers, as well as the service users, claimed to be aware of the concept, and they also support its development in the country. The drivers and limitations were ranked based on their perceived level of significance. This study recommends the promotion of awareness to accelerate its acceptance and implementation. This paper aims to provide a better solution for reducing energy consumption by identifying the fields of abnormal energy consumption. It creates a better environment-friendly smart building to adopt the various lifestyles of people. This paper's main objective is to monitor and control the energy efficiency of smart buildings by integrating IoT sensors. This paper mainly analyzes various prime factors that can help to improve energy efficiency in smart buildings. Factors impacting energy consumption are analyzed, and outliers of energy consumption are predicted and optimized to save energy. Various parameters are derived from IoT devices to improve energy efficiency in lighting and HVAC controls, energy monitoring, building envelope and automation systems, and renewable energy. The parameters used in water, network convergence, and electrical and environmental monitoring are also used for improving energy efficiency. This paper uses various IoT devices for monitoring and generating data in and around a smart building and analyzes it by implementing an intelligent Information Communication Technology (ICT) model called the Dynamic Semantic Behavior Data Analysis (DSBDA) Model to analyze data concerning dynamic changes in the environment and user behavior to improve energy efficiency and provide better sustainable lifestyle-based smart buildings. Buildings have now adopted a new dimension: the dimension of smartness. The rapid arrival of connected devices, together with the smart features that they provide, has allowed for the transition of existing buildings towards smart buildings. The assessment of the smartness of the large number of existing buildings could exhaust resources, but some organisations are requesting this regardless (such as the smart readiness indicator of the European Union). To tackle this issue, this work describes a tool that was created to find connected devices to automatically evaluate smartness. The tool, which was given the name SmartWatcher, uses a design-for-purpose natural language processing algorithm that converts verbal information into numerical information. The method was tested on real buildings in four different geographical locations. SmartWatcher is shown to be powerful, as it was capable of obtaining numerical values from verbal descriptions of devices. Additionally, a preliminary comparison of values obtained using the automatic engine and clipboard assessments showed that although the results were still far from being perfect, some visual correlation could be seen. This anticipates that, with the addition of appropriate techniques that refine this algorithm, or with the addition of new ones (with other more advanced natural language processing methods), the accuracy of this tool could be greatly increased. Smart, and ultra-low energy consuming Internet of Things (IoTs), wireless sensor networks (WSN), and autonomous devices are being deployed to smart buildings and cities, which require continuous power supply, whereas battery usage has accompanying environmental problems, coupled with additional maintenance cost. We present Home Chimney Pinwheels (HCP) as the Smart Turbine Energy Harvester (STEH) for wind; and Cloud-based remote monitoring of its output data. The HCP commonly serves as an external cap to home chimney exhaust outlets; they have very low inertia to wind; and are available on the rooftops of some buildings. Here, an electromagnetic converter adapted from a brushless DC motor was mechanically fastened to the circular base of an 18-blade HCP. In simulated wind, and rooftop experiments, an output voltage of 0.3 V to 16 V was realised for a wind speed between 0.6 to 16 km/h. This is sufficient to operate low-power IoT devices deployed around a smart city. The harvester was connected to a power management unit and its output data was remotely monitored via the IoT analytic Cloud platform "ThingSpeak" by means of LoRa transceivers, serving as sensors; while also obtaining supply from the harvester. The HCP can be a battery-less "stand-alone" low-cost STEH, with no grid connection, and can be installed as attachments to IoT or wireless sensors nodes in smart buildings and cities. Smart workplace Internet of Things (IoT) solutions rely on several sensors deployed efficiently in the workplace environment to collect accurate data to meet system goals. A vital issue for these sensor-based IoT solutions is privacy. Ideally, the occupants must be monitored discreetly, and the strategies for maintaining privacy are dependent on the nature of the data required. This paper proposes a new sensor design approach for IoT solutions in the workplace that protects occupants' privacy. We focus on a novel sensor that autonomously detects and captures human movements in the office to monitor a person's sedentary behavior. The sensor guides an eHealth solution that uses continuous feedback about desk behaviors to prompt healthy movement breaks for seated workers. The proposed sensor and its privacy-preserving characteristics can enhance the eHealth solution system's performance. Compared to self-reporting, intrusive, and other data collection techniques, this sensor can collect the information reliably and timely. We also present the data analysis specific to this new sensor that measures two physical distance parameters in real-time and uses their difference to determine human actions. Living and working in comfort while a building's energy consumption is kept under control requires monitoring a system's consumption to optimize the energy performance. The way energy is generally used is often far from optimal, which requires the use of smart meters that can record the energy consumption and communicate the information to an energy manager who can analyze the consumption behavior, monitor, and optimize energy performance. Given that the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are the largest electricity consumers in buildings, this paper discusses the importance of incorporating occupancy data in the energy efficiency analysis and unveils energy inefficiencies in the way the system operates. This paper uses 1-year data of a highly efficient certified office building located in the Houston area and shows the power of self-organizing maps and data analysis in identifying up to 4.6% possible savings in energy. This paper presents an energy management strategy (EMS) based on the Stackelberg game theory for the microgrid community. Three agents or layers are considered in the proposed framework. The microgrid cluster (MGC) refers to the agent that coordinates the interactions between the microgrids and the utility grid. The microgrid agent manages the energy scheduling of its own consumers. The third agent represents the consumers inside the microgrids. The game equilibrium point is solved between different layers and each layer will benefit the most. First, an algorithm performs demand response in each microgrid according to load models in smart buildings and determines the load consumption for each consumer. Then, each microgrid determines its selling price to the consumers and the amount of energy required to purchase from the utility grid to achieve the maximum profit. Finally, the balance point will be obtained between microgrids by the microgrid cluster agent. Moreover, the proposed method uses various load types at different times based on real-life models. The result shows that considering these different load models with demand response increased the profit of the user agent by an average of 22%. Data play an essential role in the optimal control of smart buildings' operation, especially in building energy-management for the target of nearly zero buildings. The building monitoring system is in charge of collecting and managing building data. However, device imperfections and failures of the monitoring system are likely to produce low-quality data, such as data loss and inconsistent data, which then seriously affect the control quality of the buildings. This paper proposes a new approach based on Gaussian process regression for data-quality monitoring and sensor network data compensation in smart buildings. The proposed method is proven to effectively detect and compensate for low-quality data thanks to the application of data analysis to the energy management monitoring system of a building model in Viet Nam. Systems for determining the position of objects inside buildings have a wide range of applications, such as the surveillance of people's movements in hospitals, and of goods or mobile robots in warehouse spaces or production halls. Hence, there is a need for the development of methods that could be applied for those purposes. This paper presents the results of research on an experimental system for localizing people being evacuated from a building. The proposed solution was designed as a part of the building evacuation management system. The method used for finding location belongs to the class of proximity-type methods and is based on Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) information of Bluetooth Low-Energy (BLE) devices. The devices used to build the system (BLE receivers) and the evacuee's wristband (BLE transmitters) are low-budget electronic modules. The paper presents preliminary research and the process of selecting data processing methods, as well as the results of tests of the experimental network created for the evacuation system. The results of measurements and statistical analyses of the properties of the RSSI parameter of the BLE signal transmission between the modules used in the designed system are presented. In addition, the results of RSSI measurements and the analyses of RSSI recorded under varying environmental conditions in the building are presented. The choice of the data processing method and its parameters was made with the use of the determined probabilities of the nearest locator node detection. Finally, the performance of the experimental installation of the evacuee tracking system was tested and the effectiveness of the proximity method was evaluated. The experimental tests aimed to analyze the detection range and the impact of shading. They also allowed for determining the mean error and for estimating the maximum position determination error. It should be emphasized that the proposed position estimation method has a very low computational load, allowing the implementation of an extensive real-time system on a typical personal computer. Although the proposed system should be classified as a coarse positioning system, its features such as low cost, simplicity, flexibility, the use of commonly available components and low requirements for computational load make it attractive. With the growing need to obtain information about power consumption in buildings, it is necessary to investigate how to collect, store, and visualize such information using low-cost solutions. Currently, the available building management solutions are expensive and challenging to support small and medium-sized buildings. Unfortunately, not all buildings are intelligent, making it difficult to obtain such data from energy measurement devices and appliances or access such information. The internet of things (IoT) opens new opportunities to support real-time monitoring and control to achieve future smart buildings. This work proposes an IoT platform for remote monitoring and control of smart buildings, which consists of four-layer architecture: power layer, data acquisition layer, communication network layer, and application layer. This work discusses smart building applications involving the Internet of Things (IoT) which are focused on energy consumption monitoring and forecasting systems, as well as indoor air quality (IAQ) control. Low-cost hardware integrating sensors and open source platforms are implemented for cloud data transmission, data storage and data processing. Advanced data analytics is performed by the seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) method and a long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network with an accurate calculation performance about energy predictions. The proposed results are developed within the framework of the R&D project Data System Platform for Smart Communities (D-SySCOM), which is oriented to a smart public building application. The main goal of the work was to define a guideline-matching energy efficiency with wellness in public indoor environments, by providing modular low-cost solutions which are easily implementable for advanced data processing. The implemented technologies are suitable to define an efficient organizational user protocol based on energy efficiency and worker wellness. The estimated performance of mean square error (MSE) of 0.01 of the adopted algorithms proves the efficiency of the implemented building monitoring system in terms of energy consumption forecasting. In addition, the possibility of designing and implementing a modular low-cost hardware–software system was demonstrated utilizing open source tools in a way that was oriented to smart buildings approaches. ZigBee and LoRa are communication technologies widely used in the application of the Internet of things (IoT), especially in the field of smart building environmental monitoring. The main purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the transmission performance of ZigBee and LoRa wireless communication networks in the building. Through two indicators of packet loss rate (PLR) and round-trip time (RTT), this paper discusses in detail the transmission performance of ZigBee and LoRa technologies in whole buildings under the same working conditions. We set up three experimental scenarios of line-of-sight, horizontal and vertical to evaluate the communication performance of these two networks by changing the baud rate and packet length, and cost and power consumption were considered. Experiments have shown that LoRa networks outperform ZigBee networks in most cases and are the best choice for building communication networks. The experimental results provide basic data support and engineering reference for the application of these two technologies in buildings, especially for the deployment of communication networks throughout buildings. In large buildings, during the situation of fire or other hazards, a smart evacuation guidance system needs to fully consider manifold aspects of hazards to guide evacuees through exit gates as fast as possible by dynamic and safe routes. In this paper, we propose a smart evacuation guidance system with a dynamic evacuation routing approach by using the LCDT (Length-Capacity-Density-Trustiness) weighted graph model and partial view (PV) information which represents the hazard intensity and the crowd congestion information of a group of sections/floors in the building. The proposed system is designed as a distributed system with multiple layers of computing by using smart indicators. Given such a system, we develop an efficient distributed approach, so-called LCDT&PV, to find out effective evacuation routes dynamically. We then propose an estimating congestion strategy in order to improve the efficiency of dynamic evacuation routes. To validate the proposed system, we implement a simulator to compare the proposed evacuation routing approach with baseline approaches. Experimental results show that the proposed approach reduces up to 30% of the total evacuation time compared with others. High-quality data are always desirable for superior decision-making in smart buildings. However, latency issues, communication failures, meter glitches, etc., create data anomalies. Especially, the redundant/duplicate records captured at the same time instants are critical anomalies. Two such cases are the same timestamps with the same energy consumption reading and the same timestamps with different energy consumption readings. This causes data inconsistency that deludes decision-making and analytics. Thus, such anomalies must be properly identified. So, this paper performs an enumeration of redundant data anomalies in smart building energy consumption readings using an analytical approach with 4-phases (sub-dataset extraction, quantification, visualization, and analysis). This provides the count, distribution, type, and correlation of redundancies. Smart buildings' energy consumption dataset of Darmstadt city, Germany, was used in this study. From this study, the highest count of redundancies is observed as 5060 on 26 January 2012 with the average count of redundancies at the hour level being 211 and the minute level being 7. Similarly, the lowest count of redundancies is observed as 89 on 24 January 2012. Further, out of these 5060 redundancies, 1453 redundancies are found with the same readings and 3607 redundancies are found with different readings. Additionally, it is identified that there are only 14 min out of 1440 min on 26 January 2012 without having any redundancy. This means that almost 99% of the minutes in the day possess some kind of redundancies, where the energy consumption readings were recorded mostly with two occurrences, moderately with three occurrences, and very few with four and five occurrences. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on society. Scientists are working to mitigate the impact in many ways. As a field closely related to human life, building engineering can make a great contribution. In this article, we started with the concept of the smart building as our guide. The impact of COVID-19 on daily energy consumption, information and communication technology, the ventilation of the interior environment of buildings, and the higher demand for new energy technologies such as electric vehicles is an entry point. We discuss how the concept of the smart building and related technologies (refrigeration, measurement, sensor networks, robotics, local energy generation, and storage) could help human society respond to the pandemic. Intelligent building management systems are proven to lead to energy savings and are an integral component of smart buildings. The procedures developed in the EN standards describe the methodology for calculating the energy savings achieved by improving the automation and control levels of separate services in building systems. However, although this method is used in practice, it is rarely applied or investigated by the research community. Typically, energy savings resulting from a single automation improvement intervention in a building heating system are observed, while the holistic view of combined automation upgrades is not considered. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the energy savings resulting from several upgrades to control levels in the heating system components of the building. In addition, this research provides a rationale for the impact of multiple automation and control options for heating systems as well as examines the difference in energy savings. Finally, an analytical model is developed and demonstrated to assess the feasibility of building automation and control upgrades, by determining the allowed investment according to a set of predefined indicators. Digitalization offers new, unprecedented possibilities to increase the energy efficiency and improve the indoor conditions in buildings in a cost-efficient way. Smart buildings are seen by many stakeholders as the way forward. Smart buildings feature advanced monitoring and control systems that allow a better control of the buildings' indoor spaces, but it is becoming evident that the massive amount of data produced in smart buildings is rarely used. This work presents a long-term evaluation of a smart building testbed for one year; the building features state-of-the-art monitoring capability and local energy generation (PV). The analysis shows room for improving energy efficiency and indoor comfort due to non-optimal control settings; for instance, average indoor temperatures in all winter months were above 24 °C. The analysis of electricity and domestic hot water use has shown a relevant spread in average use, with single users consuming approximately four times more than the average users. The combination of CO2 and temperature sensor was sufficient to pinpoint the anomalous operation of windows in wintertime, which has an impact on energy use for space heating. Although the quantification of the impact of users on the overall energy performance of the building was beyond the scope of this paper, this study showcases that modern commercial monitoring systems for buildings have the potential to identify anomalies. The evidence collected in the paper suggests that this data could be used to promote energy-efficient behaviors among building occupants and shows that cost-effective actions could be carried out if data generated by the monitoring and control systems were used more extensively. Human activity recognition (HAR) is fundamental to many services in smart buildings. However, providing sufficiently robust activity recognition systems that could be confidently deployed in an ordinary real environment remains a major challenge. Much of the research done in this area has mainly focused on recognition through pre-segmented sensor data. In this paper, real-time human activity recognition based on streaming sensors is investigated. The proposed methodology incorporates dynamic event windowing based on spatio-temporal correlation and the knowledge of activity trigger sensor to recognize activities and record new events. The objective is to determine whether the last event that just happened belongs to the current activity, or if it is the sign of the start of a new activity. For this, we consider the correlation between sensors in view of what can be seen in the history of past events. The proposed algorithm contains three steps: verification of sensor correlation (SC), verification of temporal correlation (TC), and determination of the activity triggering the sensor. The proposed approach is applied to a real case study: the "Aruba" dataset from the CASAS database. F1 score is used to assess the quality of the segmentation. The results show that the proposed approach segments several activities (sleeping, bed to toilet, meal preparation, eating, housekeeping, working, entering home, and leaving home) with an F1 score of 0.63–0.99. Buildings are becoming more data-rich. Building analytics tools, including energy information systems (EIS) and fault detection and diagnostic (FDD) tools, have emerged to enable building operators to translate large amounts of time-series data into actionable findings to achieve energy and non-energy benefits. To expedite data analytics adoption and facilitate technology innovation, building owners, technology developers, and researchers need reliable cost–benefit data and evidence-based guidance on deployment practices. This paper fulfills these needs with the energy use and survey data from a wide-ranging research and industry partnership program that covers thousands of buildings installed with analytics tools. The paper indicates that after two years of implementation, organizations using FDD tools and EIS tools achieved 9% and 3% median annual energy savings, respectively. The median base cost and annual recurring cost for FDD are USD 0.65 per square meter (m2) (USD 0.06 per square foot [ft2]) and USD 0.22 per m2 (USD 0.02 per ft2), and are USD 0.11 per m2 (USD 0.01 per ft2) and USD 0.11 per m2 (USD 0.01 per ft2) for EIS. The common metrics and analyses that are used in the tools to support the discovery of energy efficiency measures are summarized in detail. Two best practice examples identified to maximize the benefits of tool implementation are also presented. Opportunities to advance the state of technology include simplified data integration and management, and more efficient processes for acting on analytics outputs. The building sector is one of the largest contributors to the world's total energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. Advancements in building energy technologies have played a critical role in enhancing the energy sustainability of the built environment. Extensive research and new techniques in energy and environmental systems for buildings have recently emerged to address the global challenges. This study reviews existing articles in the literature, mostly since 2000, to explore technological advancement in building energy and environmental systems that can be applied to smart homes and buildings. This review study focuses on an overview of the design and implementation of energy-related smart building technologies, including energy management systems, renewable energy applications, and current advanced smart technologies for optimal function and energy-efficient performance. To review the advancement in building energy-related technologies, a systematic review process is adopted based on available published reviews and research types of articles. Review-type articles are first assessed to explore the current literature on the relevant keywords and to capture major research scopes. Research-type papers are then examined to investigate associated keywords and work scopes, including objectives, focuses, limitations, and future needs. Throughout the comprehensive literature review, this study identifies various techniques of smart home/building applications that have provided detailed solutions or guidelines in different applications to enhance the quality of people's daily activities and the sustainability of the built environmental system. This paper shows trends in human activities and technology advancements in digital solutions with energy management systems and practical designs. Understanding the overall energy flow between a building and its environmentally connected systems is also important for future buildings and community levels. In the COVID-19 era, a direct relationship has been consolidated between the concentration of the pollutant carbon dioxide (CO2) and indoor disease transmission. For reducing its spread, recommendations have been established among which air renewal is a key element to improve indoor air quality (IAQ). In this study, a low-cost CO2 measurement device was designed, developed, assembled, prototyped, and openly programmed so that the IAQ can be monitored remotely. In addition, this clonic device was calibrated for correct data acquisition. In parallel, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling analysis was used to study the indoor air flows to eliminate non-representative singular measurement points, providing possible locations. The results in four scenarios (cross ventilation, outdoor ventilation, indoor ventilation, and no ventilation) showed that the measurements provided by the clonic device are comparable to those obtained by laboratory instruments, with an average error of less than 3%. These data collected wirelessly for interpretation were evaluated on an Internet of Things (IoT) platform in real time or deferred. As a result, remaining lifespan of buildings can be exploited interconnecting IAQ devices with other systems (as HVAC systems) in an IoT environment. In the context of smart cities, sustainability is an essential dimension. One of the ways to achieve sustainability and reduce the emission of greenhouse gases in smart cities is through the promotion of sustainable energy. The demand for affordable and reliable electrical energy requires different energy sources, where the cost of production often outweighs the environmental factor. This paper aims to investigate the ways smart cities promote sustainability in the electricity sector. For this, a systematic literature review using the PRISMA protocol was employed as the methodological approach. In this review, 154 journal articles were thoroughly analyzed. The results were grouped according to the themes and categorized into energy efficiency, renewable energies, and energy and urban planning. The study findings revealed the following: (a) global academic publication landscape for smart city and energy sustainability research; (b) unbalanced publications when critically evaluating geographical continents' energy use intensity vs. smart cities' energy sustainability research outcomes; (c) there is a heavy concentration on the technology dimension of energy sustainability and efficiency, and renewables topics in the literature, but much less attention is paid to the energy and urban planning issues. Nowadays, the transformations of cities into smart cities is a crucial factor in improving the living conditions of the inhabitants as well as addressing emergency situations under the concept of public safety and property loss. In this context, many sensing systems have been designed and developed that provide fire detection and gas leakage alerts. On the other hand, new technologies such edge computing have gained significant attention in recent years. Moreover, the development of recent intelligent applications in IoT aims to integrate several types of systems with automated next-generation emergency calls in case of a serious accident. Currently, there is a lack of studies that combine all the aforementioned technologies. The proposed smart building sensor system, SB112, combines a small-size multisensor-based (temperature, humidity, smoke, flame, CO, LPG, and CNG) scheme with an open-source edge computing framework and automated Next Generation (NG) 112 emergency call functionality. It involves crucial actors such as IoT devices, a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP), the middleware of a smart city platform, and relevant operators in an end-to-end manner for real-world scenarios. To verify the utility and functionality of the proposed system, a representative end-to-end experiment was performed, publishing raw measurements from sensors as well as a fire alert in real time and with low latency (average latency of 32 ms) to the middleware of a smart city platform. Once the fire was detected, a fully automatic NG112 emergency call to a PSAP was performed. The recent trend is to transform existing buildings into smart, green, or passive buildings by adopting sustainable technologies to achieve increased life comfort and production efficiency through reducing carbon emissions, energy consumption, and operating costs. Thus, existing buildings can be rehabilitated in order to have the lowest possible energy consumption. One of the highest demands on the energy consumption of buildings is the heating system used during the winter months. In this paper, we propose a management and control system for electrical and energy heating consumption, based on a BMS (building management system) that is used for the rehabilitation of the students' dormitories on a university campus. This includes a cogeneration plant that can be controlled in order to produce electrical and heating energy, depending on the requirements needed to heat the building in the cold season. The notions of smart construction and smart or digital cities include many modern concepts that are advocated today, especially in countries with advanced economies, and depend on using information technology and the Internet of Things as a basis to automate processes and activate digital systems to manage activities and services related to the operation of buildings and urban structures. In light of the spread of digital technology and modern managerial approaches, the concept of a digital twin is being used on a large scale with the current trend and direction to digitalize activities providing many economic, social and technical advantages. A digital twin is a system in which a virtual representation of a real entity or physical system is used continuously by being fed with data and deriving outputs in the form of decisions and actions that are generated through the processes of machine learning, simulation, development and lifecycle management. This study aims to review the literature on construction project management through the lens of digital twins and ways to use them in the field to improve operational results. While there is a significant amount of research on optimising building energy using the smart building concept, there is a dearth of studies investigating the modelling and management of smart systems' data, which is the starting point for establishing the necessary digital environment for representing a smart building. This study aimed to develop and test a solution for modelling and managing smart building information using an industry foundation classes (IFCs)-based BIM process. A conceptual model expressed in the SysML language was proposed to define a smart building. Five BIM approaches were identified as potential 'prototypes' for representing and exchanging smart building information. The fidelity of each approach is checked through a BIM-based validation process using an open-source visualisation platform. The different prototypes were also assessed using a multi-criteria comparison method to identify the preferred approach for modelling and managing smart building information. The preferred approach was prototyped and tested in a use case focused on building energy consumption monitoring to evaluate its ability to manage and visualise the smart building data. The use case was applied in a real case study using a full-scale demonstrator, namely, the 'Nanterre 3' (N3) smart building located at the CESI campus in Paris-Nanterre. The findings demonstrated that an open BIM format in the form of IFCs could achieve adequate modelling of smart building data without information loss. Presently, due to the establishment of a sensor network, residual buildings in urban areas are being converted into smart buildings. Many sensors are deployed in various buildings to perform different functions, such as water quality monitoring and temperature monitoring. However, the major concern faced in smart building Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is energy depletion and security threats. Many researchers have attempted to solve these issues by various authors in different applications of WSNs. However, limited research has been conducted on smart buildings. Thus, the present research is focused on designing an energy-efficient and secure routing protocol for smart building WSNs. The process in the proposed framework is carried out in two stages. The first stage is the design of the optimal routing protocol based on the grid-clustering approach. In the grid-based model, a grid organizer was selected based on the sailfish optimization algorithm. Subsequently, a fuzzy expert system is used to select the relay node to reach the shortest path for data transmission. The second stage involves designing a trust model for secure data transmission using the two-fish algorithm. A simulation study of the proposed framework was conducted to evaluate its performance. Some metrics, such as the packet delivery ratio, end-end delay, and average residual energy, were calculated for the proposed model. Smart buildings seek to have a balance between energy consumption and occupant comfort. To make this possible, smart buildings need to be able to foresee sudden changes in the building's energy consumption. With the help of forecasting models, building energy management systems, which are a fundamental part of smart buildings, know when sudden changes in the energy consumption pattern could occur. Currently, different forecasting methods use models that allow building energy management systems to forecast energy consumption. Due to this, it is increasingly necessary to have appropriate forecasting models to be able to maintain a balance between energy consumption and occupant comfort. The objective of this paper is to present an energy consumption forecasting strategy that allows hourly day-ahead predictions. The presented forecasting strategy is tested using real data from two buildings located in Valladolid, Spain. Different machine learning and deep learning models were used to analyze which could perform better with the proposed strategy. After establishing the performance of the models, a model was assembled using the mean of the prediction values of the top five models to obtain a model with better performance. The introduction of the Internet of Things (IoT) in the construction industry is evolving facility maintenance (FM) towards predictive maintenance development. Predictive maintenance of building facilities requires continuously updated data on construction components to be acquired through integrated sensors. The main challenges in developing predictive maintenance tools for building facilities is IoT integration, IoT data visualization on the building 3D model and implementation of maintenance management system on the IoT and building information modeling (BIM). The current 3D building models do not fully interact with IoT building facilities data. Data integration in BIM is challenging. The research aims to integrate IoT alert systems with BIM models to monitor building facilities during the operational phase and to visualize building facilities' conditions virtually. To provide efficient maintenance services for building facilities this research proposes an integration of a digital framework based on IoT and BIM platforms. Sensors applied in the building systems and IoT technology on a cloud platform with opensource tools and standards enable monitoring of real-time operation and detecting of different kinds of faults in case of malfunction or failure, therefore sending alerts to facility managers and operators. Proposed preventive maintenance methodology applied on a proof-of-concept heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) plant adopts open source IoT sensor networks. The results show that the integrated IoT and BIM dashboard framework and implemented building structures preventive maintenance methodology are applicable and promising. The automated system architecture of building facilities is intended to provide a reliable and practical tool for real-time data acquisition. Analysis and 3D visualization to support intelligent monitoring of the indoor condition in buildings will enable the facility managers to make faster and better decisions and to improve building facilities' real time monitoring with fallouts on the maintenance timeliness.
