Background: For many years, advancements in hand joint replacement (JR) were relatively minor compared to those for large joints. However, the caution previously exercised due to high complication rates is gradually being replaced by the expanding use of JR therapies for small joints in the hand. Despite this progress, there is a lack of comprehensive data on the outcomes of hand JR and on the optimal infrastructure required to meet the growing demand for these therapies. Methods: This study examined trends and revision rates of JR for thumb carpometacarpal (CMC-1) and finger (MCP and PIP) joints in both inpatient and outpatient settings in Germany. Data from the Federal Statistical Office of Germany (Destatis) and the Central Institute for Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (ZI) were analyzed, focusing on the incidence, demographics, and outcomes of these procedures. Results: This study found a substantial national increase in prosthetic treatments specifically for CMC-1, with a 2.18-fold rise in the outpatient sector compared to a 1.65-fold increase in inpatient treatments. Despite this shift, 83.7% of JR procedures were still performed in an inpatient setting. Conclusions: The overall complication rates appear to be declining, suggesting that while the management of these procedures is shifting towards outpatient care, the quality remains stable. Regeneration after ischemia requires to be promoted by (re)perfusion of the affected tissue, and, to date, there is no therapy that covers all needs. In treatment with mesenchymal stem cells (MSC), the secretome acts via paracrine mechanisms and has a positive influence on vascular regeneration via proangiogenic factors. A lack of standardization and the high complexity of vascular structures make it difficult to compare angiogenic readouts from different studies. This emphasizes the need for improved approaches and the introduction of an index in the preclinical setting. A characterization of human MSC secretomes obtained from one of the three formats—single cells, small, and large spheroids—was performed using the chicken aortic ring assay in combination with a modified angiogenic activity index (AAI) and an angiogenic profile. While the secretome of the small spheroid group showed an inhibitory effect on angiogenesis, the large spheroid group impressed with a fully pro-angiogenic response, and a higher AAI compared to the single cell group, underlying the suitability of these three-stem cell-derived secretomes with their distinct angiogenic properties to validate the AAI and the novel angiogenic profile established here. Robot calibration and modelling measurements are commonly performed using a laser tracker. To capture three-dimensional positions, a SMR is attached to the robot. While some researchers employ adhesive bonds for this purpose, such methods often result in inaccurate, unstable and non-repeatable SMR positioning, adversely affecting measurement precision and the traceability of research outcomes. To address these challenges, we investigated alternative methods for attaching an SMR to a robot's flange to achieve both accuracy and repeatability. Additionally, we analysed measurement errors introduced when using a tool to attach the SMR to the flange. As a solution, we developed a 3D-printed mount designed for attachment to the flange. The mount's accuracy was evaluated by assessing its eccentricity and the repeatability of the SMR placement. Experimental results demonstrated that the mount achieved an eccentricity radius of 0.35 mm and repeatability inaccuracies of X = 0.075 mm , Y = 0.328 mm , and Z = 0.485 mm . These values indicate that the mount provides sufficient accuracy to support calibration processes, ensures research traceability, and serves as a viable replacement for adhesive bonds. We focus on optimizing oil displacement in brownfields using alkali polymers (AP) flooding. The goal is to enhance rock–fluid and fluid–fluid interactions to improve oil recovery. The evaluation includes detailed screening of AP mixtures to ensure cost-effectiveness and maximize chemical slug efficiency, using an AP pilot project in Austria as a case study. Key aspects of the study involve assessing fluid properties to select appropriate chemical concentrations. Important parameters include the stability of produced emulsions, interfacial tension (IFT) measurements, and rheological analyses. Rock–fluid interactions were examined through core flooding experiments on both low- and high-permeability core plugs to understand fluid dynamics in heterogeneous reservoirs. A novel part of the research involved simulating the in situ aging of the AP slug, which increases its anionicity over time. Two-phase core flooding with aged chemicals provided insights into the evolution of chemical effectiveness and interactions. We found that an alkali concentration of 7500 ppm was optimal for the AP slug, particularly in its interaction with dead oil with a high total acid number (TAN), leading to emulsions with microscopic instability. Single-phase core flooding showed that the AP slug from Vendor B outperformed that from Vendor A despite mechanical stability issues. However, the additional recovery factor (RF) for polymer A-based slugs was higher in both high- and low-permeability core plugs. Rapid urban population growth in Bandung City has led to the development of slums due to inadequate housing facilities and urban planning. However, it remains unclear how these slums are distributed and evolve spatially and temporally. Therefore, it is necessary to map their distribution and trends effectively. This study aimed to classify slum areas in Bandung City using a machine learning-based local knowledge approach; this classification exercise contributes towards Sustainable Development Goal 11 related to sustainable cities and communities. The methods included settlement and commercial/industrial classification from 2021 SPOT-6 satellite data by the Random Forest classifier. A knowledge-based classifier was used to derive slum and non-slum settlements from the settlement and commercial/industrial classification, as well as railway, river, and road buffering. Our findings indicate that these methods achieved an overall accuracy of 82%. The producer's accuracy for slum areas was 70%, while the associated user's accuracy was 92%. Meanwhile, the Kappa coefficient was 0.63. These findings suggest that local knowledge could be a potent option in the machine learning algorithm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite growing numbers of scientific publications on the optimal antibiotic treatment for diabetic foot infections, the data on the adult population with non-diabetic (postsurgical) foot infections is limited. Therefore, one of the largest single-center databases at the Balgrist University Hospital in Zurich, Switzerland, was established between January 2014 and August 2022. Using a case–control study design, we retrospectively investigated failures of combined surgical and antibiotic therapy for surgical site foot infections (SSIs). Overall, 17.4% of the episodes experienced therapeutic failures, particularly in patients with infected ankle prostheses. However, age, biological sex, pathogens, the duration of post-debridement antibiotic treatment, the number of surgical debridements, or the use of negative-pressure wound care altered the failure risk. In the multivariate logistic regression analyses, the duration of postsurgical antibiotic use was completely indifferent (as a continuous variable with an odds ratio of 1.0 and a 95% confidence interval ranging from 0.96 to 1.03) when stratified into inter-tertiary groups. Our findings suggest that shorter courses of systemic antibiotics may be appropriate in non-diabetic adults, supporting better antibiotic stewardship. Ongoing randomized controlled trials are under way to investigate which patients might safely receive shorter antibiotic treatments for surgical site infections following elective foot and ankle procedures. Introduction: Secondary complex microsurgical reconstructions after amputation and severe trauma injuries are often necessary to optimize functional outcomes. Methods and Patients: We reviewed eight patients who underwent extensive reconstruction after severe trauma. The details of secondary procedures are further described in the article. A literature search was performed using the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) database for studies evaluating secondary procedures after complex reconstructions. Discussion: To date, the order and the need for performing secondary procedures have yet to be fully defined. The tissues encountered include skin, soft tissue, bone, nerve, joint, and tendon. Regulatory T cells (Tregs) play a key role in maintaining immune homeostasis and preventing autoimmunity through their immunosuppressive function. There have been numerous reports confirming that high levels of Tregs in the tumor microenvironment (TME) are associated with a poor prognosis, highlighting their role in promoting an immunosuppressive environment. In breast cancer (BC), Tregs interact with cancer cells, ultimately leading to the suppression of immune surveillance and promoting tumor progression. This review discusses the dual role of Tregs in breast cancer, and explores the controversies and therapeutic potential associated with targeting these cells. Researchers are investigating various strategies to deplete or inhibit Tregs, such as immune checkpoint inhibitors, cytokine antagonists, and metabolic inhibition. However, the heterogeneity of Tregs and the variable precision of treatments pose significant challenges. Understanding the functional diversity of Tregs and the latest advances in targeted therapies is critical for the development of effective therapies. This review highlights the latest approaches to Tregs for BC treatment that both attenuate Treg-mediated immunosuppression in tumors and maintain immune tolerance, and advocates precise combination therapy strategies to optimize breast cancer outcomes. Background/Objectives: Acetabular fractures, traditionally linked to high-impact trauma in younger adults, are increasingly observed in the elderly due to falls and poor bone quality. This demographic shift necessitates updated treatment approaches. This study analyzes demographic trends and treatment evolution over a decade using the German pelvic fracture registry. Methods: Data on acetabular fractures were analyzed from the German pelvic fracture registry of the German Trauma Society. Parameters included classification, demographics, treatment methods, and surgical details. Trends were assessed by grouping patients based on treatment intervals and age, comparing treatment methods, surgical approaches, and reduction quality across these groups, considering fracture types and treatment volume. Results: The study included 2853 unilateral acetabular fractures with a mean patient age of 61.5 years, showing an increasing age trend. A shift from simple to complex fractures involving the anterior acetabular column was observed. Operative treatment was performed in 62.5% of cases, more common in non-geriatric patients and those with posterior column involvement. The use of anterior intrapelvic approaches increased over time, replacing the Ilioinguinal extrapelvic approach. Anatomical reduction was achieved in 47.4% of cases, with 31.7% having imperfect reductions and 20.9% poor reductions. High-volume centers had significantly better reduction outcomes, particularly for simple fractures. Geriatric patients exhibited worse reduction quality compared to younger patients. In-hospital mortality was stable at 3.3%. Conclusions: The study highlights a demographic shift towards an older patient population, leading to more complex fracture patterns. Despite advancements in surgical techniques and new implant technologies, these demographic changes have resulted in lower reduction quality for complex fractures. Scars may represent more than a cosmetic concern for patients; they may impose functional limitations and are frequently associated with the sensation of itching or pain, thus impacting both psychological and physical well-being. From an aesthetic perspective, scars display variances in color, thickness, texture, contour, and their homogeneity, while the functional aspect encompasses considerations of functionality, pliability, and sensory perception. Scars located in critical anatomic areas have the potential to induce profound impairments, including contracture-related mobility restrictions, thereby significantly impacting daily functioning and the quality of life. Conventional approaches to scar management may suffice to a certain extent, yet there are cases where tailored interventions are warranted. Autologous fat grafting emerges as a promising therapeutic avenue in such instances. Fundamental mechanisms underlying scar formation include chronic inflammation, fibrogenesis and dysregulated wound healing, among other contributing factors. These mechanisms can potentially be alleviated through the application of adipose-derived stem cells, which represent the principal cellular component utilized in the process of lipofilling. Adipose-derived stem cells possess the capacity to secrete proangiogenic factors such as fibroblast growth factor, vascular endothelial growth factor and hepatocyte growth factor, as well as neurotrophic factors, such as brain-derived neurotrophic factors. Moreover, they exhibit multipotency, remodel the extracellular matrix, act in a paracrine manner, and exert immunomodulatory effects through cytokine secretion. These molecular processes contribute to neoangiogenesis, the alleviation of chronic inflammation, and the promotion of a conducive milieu for wound healing. Beyond the obvious benefit in restoring volume, the adipose-derived stem cells and their regenerative capacities facilitate a reduction in pain, pruritus, and fibrosis. This review elucidates the regenerative potential of autologous fat grafting and its beneficial and promising effects on both functional and aesthetic outcomes when applied to scar tissue. Simple Summary: This study explored the long-term outcomes of patients who underwent hip replacement surgery following the removal of malignant tumors in the hip area. The main focus was to understand how well patients recovered in terms of physical function and quality of life. The study included 30 patients treated between 2010 and 2018, all of whom received interdisciplinary therapy, consisting of both systemic and surgical treatments. The follow-up period averaged a little over three years. The results showed that younger patients tended to have better physical function and overall quality of life after surgery. The study also revealed that complications like implant failure were relatively low, and no amputations were necessary. These findings suggest that this type of surgery, combined with comprehensive interdisciplinary care, can be a safe and effective option for managing hip tumors. Further research is needed to continue improving patient outcomes and tailoring treatments to individual needs. Introduction: Over the past few decades, tumor arthroplasty has evolved into an established therapeutic approach for addressing bone defects following tumor resection in the extremities. As the diagnosis has a significant impact on patients' lives, it is important to give clear expectations for functional recovery. Therefore, we investigated both the functional outcomes and the quality of life (QoL) after tumor arthroplasty for malignant hip tumors. Methods: This retrospective study included patients who had undergone resections of malignant hip tumors with consecutive modular hip arthroplasty between 2010 and 2018. Demographics, tumor entity, and complications stemming from both tumors and treatments were evaluated through the analysis of medical records and perioperative records. The assessment of functional outcomes was conducted with the following patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs): the Harris Hip Score (HHS), Musculoskeletal Tumor Society Score (MSTS), and the Short Form Survey 36 (SF-36). Furthermore, we performed subgroup analysis in two groups: one divided into survivors and non-survivors, as well as younger individuals (<57 years) and older individuals (>57 years). Results: A total of 30 patients were included in the study. At the time of follow-up, 19 patients were deceased. The average duration of follow-up was 3.2 (±2.51) years. The average age at the time of surgery was 60.3 (±15.20) years. Notably, there were no cases of amputation reported (0%). Five cases of implant failure were identified (16.67%). Among these, one was attributed to infection (3.3%), while four resulted from aseptic loosening (13.3%). In terms of functional outcomes, MSTS indicated good results (18 ± 7; range: 7–28; 60%), and the HHS demonstrated moderate outcomes (75.3%). Younger survivors (<57 years) exhibited notably superior results in terms of both the MSTS and physical functioning in the SF-36 (p = 0.03). Conclusion: In summary, this study shows declining tumor arthroplasty-related complications and satisfying functional outcomes as well as QoL. Noteworthy aspects include the relatively low rates of amputation and local tumor recurrences, which significantly favor the selection of appropriate therapeutic options. Background: Late-stage pressure sore (PS) patients are particularly susceptible to osteomyelitis (OM), as bony prominences commonly constitute the focal point of the ulcer. There are lack of data regarding the associated factors and the clinical relevance of this diagnosis in the context of PS treatment. Methods: This retrospective analysis investigated the clinical characteristics, blood markers indicative of infection in PS patients, and development of histologically evident OM. A total of 125 patient were included from 2014 to 2019. The patient records were especially scanned for histological diagnosis of OM. Results: OM was detected in 39% (37/96) of the samples taken during the index procedure. OM prevalence increased to 56% (43/77) at the second and 70% (41/59) at the third debridement. Therefore, the diagnosis of OM was acquired during treatment in 35 cases. Patients diagnosed with initial OM presented significantly higher blood markers, indicative of infection upon admission. Only patients with consistent OM (three positive biopsies) showed higher flap revision rates. Conclusion: This study found no compelling evidence linking OM to worse clinical outcomes in PS patients. In the absence of elevated inflammatory markers, reducing bone biopsy frequency and adopting a less aggressive bone debridement approach may help prevent OM in PS patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Human inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) and canine inflammatory mammary cancer (IMC) are highly aggressive neoplastic diseases that share numerous characteristics. In IBC and IMC, chemotherapy produces a limited pathological response and anti-androgen therapies have been of interest for breast cancer treatment. Therefore, the aim was to evaluate the effect of a therapy based on bicalutamide, a non-steroidal anti-androgen, with doxorubicin and docetaxel chemotherapy on cell proliferation, migration, tumor growth, and steroid-hormone secretion. An IMC-TN cell line, IPC-366, and an IBC-TN cell line, SUM149, were used. In vitro assays revealed that SUM149 exhibited greater sensitivity, reducing cell viability and migration with all tested drugs. In contrast, IPC-366 exhibited only significant in vitro reductions with docetaxel as a single agent or in different combinations. Decreased estrogen levels reduced in vitro tumor growth in both IMC and IBC. Curiously, doxorubicin resulted in low efficacy, especially in IMC. In addition, all drugs reduced the tumor volume in IBC and IMC by increasing intratumoral testosterone (T) levels, which have been related with reduced tumor progression. In this study, hydrothermal co-liquefaction of restaurant waste for biocrude production was conducted. The feedstock was resembled using the organic fraction of restaurant waste and low-density polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, and polyethylene terephthalate, four plastic types commonly present in municipal solid waste. Using design of experiment and a face-centered central composite design, three factors (feedstock plastic fraction, temperature, time) were varied at three levels each: feedstock plastic fraction (0, 0.25, 0.5), temperature (290 °C, 330 °C, 370 °C), and reaction time (0 min, 30 min, 60 min). The literature reports positive synergistic interactions in hydrothermal co-liquefaction of biomass and plastics; however, in this work, only negative synergistic interactions could be observed. A reason could be the high thermal stability of produced fatty acids that give little room for interactions with plastics. At the same time, mass might transfer to other product phases. Several theoretical studies have predicted that refrigerant mixtures with glides of more than 20 K can yield COP improvements in heat pumps for operating conditions where the temperature difference between the heat source and heat sink is large, but experimental validations and quantifications are scarce. The application of high-glide mixtures (>20 K) in industrial heat pumps in the field is, therefore, still hampered by concerns about the behavior and handling of the mixtures. This study experimentally investigates hydrocarbon (HC) mixtures R-290/600 (propane/butane) and R-290/601 (propane/pentane) and compares them to previously tested mixtures of synthetic refrigerants. Comprehensive evaluations are presented regarding COP, compressor performance, pressure drop, heat transfer, and the possibility of inline composition determination. The mixtures were tested over a range of compositions at a source inlet temperature of 60 °C and a sink outlet temperature of 100 °C, with the heat sink and heat source temperature differences controlled to 35 K. R-290/601 at a mass composition of 70%/30% was found as the best mixture with a COP improvement of 19% over R-600 as the best pure fluid. The overall isentropic compressor efficiency was similar for HC and synthetic refrigerants, given equal suction and discharge pressures. Pressure drops in heat exchangers and connecting lines were equal for synthetic and HC mixtures at equal mass flow rates. This allows higher heating capacities of HC mixtures at a given pressure drop (mass flow rate) due to their wider vapor dome. A previously developed evaporator heat transfer correlation for synthetic refrigerant mixtures was applicable to the HC mixtures. A condenser heat transfer correlation previously fitted for synthetic refrigerants performed significantly worse for HC mixtures. Composition determination during operation and without sampling was possible with a deviation of at most 0.05 mass fraction using simple temperature and pressure measurements and REFPROP for thermodynamic property calculations. Overall, high-glide HC mixtures, just like mixtures of synthetic refrigerants, showed significant COP improvements for specific operating conditions despite a decreased heat transfer coefficient. Potential problems like composition shift or poor compressor performance were not encountered. As a next step, testing high-glide mixtures in pilot-plant installations is recommended. Background: Extracellular vesicles are pivotal mediators in intercellular communication, facilitating the exchange of biological information among healthy, pathological and tumor cells. Between the diverse subtypes of extracellular vesicles, exosomes have unique properties and clinical and therapeutical applications. Breast cancer ranks as one of the most prevalent malignancies across the globe. Both the tumor core and its surrounding microenvironment engage in a complex, orchestrated interaction that facilitates cancer's growth and spread. Methods: The most significant PubMed literature about extracellular vesicles and Adipose-Derived Stem Cell Exosomes and breast cancer was selected in order to report their biological properties and potential applications, in particular in treating triple-negative breast cancer. Results: Adipose-Derived Stem Cell Exosomes represent a potential tool in targeting triple-negative breast cancer cells at three main levels: the tumor core, the tumor microenvironment and surrounding tissues, including metastases. Conclusions: The possibility of impacting triple-negative breast cancer cells with engineered Adipose-Derived Stem Cell Exosomes is real. Simple Summary: Aggressiveness in fighting bulls is a natural characteristic of this breed, but little is known regarding it physiological mechanisms. Hormones such as serotonin, dopamine and testosterone are known to be involved in the development of aggressive behaviour. This study determines that serotonin and dopamine levels are correlated with combative behaviour, and its determination in calves is a useful indicator for the selection of combative bulls. The fighting bull is characterised by its natural aggressiveness, but the physiological mechanisms that underlie its aggressive behaviour are poorly studied. This study determines the hormonal component of aggressiveness in fighting bulls by analysing their behaviour during a fight and correlating it to their serotonin, dopamine and testosterone levels. We also determine whether aggressive behaviour can be estimated in calves. Using 195 animals, samples were obtained when the animals were calves and after 5 years. Aggressiveness scores were obtained by an observational method during bullfights, and serotonin, dopamine and testosterone levels were determined in all animals using validated enzyme immunoassay kits. The results revealed a strong correlation of serotonin and dopamine levels with aggressiveness scores in bulls during fights, but no correlation was found with respect to testosterone. These correlations led to established cut-off point and linear regression curves to obtain expected aggressiveness scores for calves at shoeing. There were no significant differences between the expected scores obtained in calves and the observed scores in bulls. Therefore, this study demonstrates that hormone determination in calves may be a great indicator of combativeness in bulls and can reliably be used in the selection of fighting bulls. Next-generation high-performance polymers require consideration as sustainable solutions. Here, to satisfy these criteria, we propose to combine high-performance styrenic block copolymers, a class of thermoplastic elastomer, with cellulose derivatives as a reinforcing agent with the aim of maintaining and/or improving structural and surface properties. A great advantage of the proposed blends is, besides their biocompatibility, a decrease in environmental impact due to blending with a natural polymer. Particularly, we focus on identifying the effect of different blending compounds and blend ratios on the morphological, structural, thermal, mechanical, electrical and cytotoxic characteristics of materials. This research provides, together with novel material formulations, practical guidelines for the design and fabrication of next-generation sustainable high-performance polymers. Lipofilling is an option for breast reconstruction after tumor resection to avoid the complications of an implant-based reconstruction. Although some concerns exist regarding the oncological safety of tissue rich in mesenchymal stem cells with their proangiogenic and proliferation-supportive properties, there are also reports that adipose-tissue-derived stem cells can exhibit antitumoral properties. We isolated primary adipose-tissue-derived stem cells. Both conditioned medium and exosomes were harvested from the cell culture and used to treat the breast cancer cell line MCF-7. Cell viability, cytotoxicity, and gene expression of MCF-7 cells in response to the indirect co-culture were evaluated. MCF-7 cells incubated with exosomes from adipose-tissue-derived stem cells show reduced cell viability in comparison to MCF-7 cells incubated with adipose-tissue-derived stem-cell-conditioned medium. Expression of proapoptotic genes was upregulated, and expression of antiapoptotic genes was downregulated. The debate about the oncological safety of autologous fat grafting after tumor resection continues. Background: The impact of sexual abstinence on sperm quality, particularly in pathological cases, is a subject of debate. We investigated the link between abstinence duration and semen quality in both normal and pathological samples. Methods: We analyzed semen samples from 4423 men undergoing fertility evaluation, comprising 1256 samples from healthy individuals and 3167 from those with conditions such as oligozoospermia, asthenozoospermia, teratozoospermia, or a combination of these factors, namely oligoasthenoteratozoospermia (OAT). Parameters including sperm concentration, the percentage of progressively motile spermatozoa, total motile sperm count, and the percentage of spermatozoa with normal morphology were assessed at various abstinence durations (each day, 0–2, 3–7, and >7 days). Results: Extended abstinence correlated with higher sperm concentration overall (p < 0.001), except in oligozoospermia. Longer abstinence reduced progressive motility in normal (p < 0.001) and teratozoospermic samples (p < 0.001). Shorter abstinence was linked to higher morphologically normal sperm in normal samples (p = 0.03), while longer abstinence did so in oligoasthenoteratozoospermic samples (p = 0.013). Conclusion: The findings suggest that a prolonged abstinence time is linked to higher sperm concentration, while optimal sperm motility is observed after shorter abstinence periods. However, results regarding morphology remain inconclusive. Recommendations on abstinence duration should be tailored based on the specific parameter requiring the most significant improvement. The triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) subtype is characterized by the lack of expression of ERα (estrogen receptor α), PR (progesterone receptor) and no overexpression of HER-2. However, TNBC can express the androgen receptor (AR) or estrogen receptor β (ERβ). Also, TNBC secretes steroid hormones and is influenced by hormonal fluctuations, so the steroid inhibition could exert a beneficial effect in TNBC treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of dutasteride, anastrozole and ASP9521 in in vitro processes using human TNBC cell lines. For this, immunofluorescence, sensitivity, proliferation and wound healing assays were performed, and hormone concentrations were studied. Results revealed that all TNBC cell lines expressed AR and ERβ; the ones that expressed them most intensely were more sensitive to antihormonal treatments. All treatments reduced cell viability, highlighting MDA-MB-453 and SUM-159. Indeed, a decrease in androgen levels was observed in these cell lines, which could relate to a reduction in cell viability. In addition, MCF-7 and SUM-159 increased cell migration under treatments, increasing estrogen levels, which could favor cell migration. This systematic review addresses the crucial role of anticoagulation in microsurgical procedures, focusing on free flap reconstruction and replantation surgeries. The objective was to balance the prevention of thrombotic complications commonly leading to flap failure, with the risk of increased bleeding complications associated with anticoagulant use. A meticulous PubMed literature search following Evidence-Based-Practice principles yielded 79 relevant articles, including both clinical and animal studies. The full-texts were carefully reviewed and evaluated by the modified Coleman methodology score. Clinical studies revealed diverse perioperative regimens, primarily based on aspirin, heparin, and dextran. Meta-analyses demonstrated similar flap loss rates with heparin or aspirin. High doses of dalteparin or heparin, however, correlated with higher flap loss rates than low dose administration. Use of dextran is not recommended due to severe systemic complications. In animal studies, systemic heparin administration showed predominantly favorable results, while topical application and intraluminal irrigation consistently exhibited significant benefits in flap survival. The insights from this conducted systematic review serve as a foundational pillar towards the establishment of evidence-based guidelines for anticoagulation in microsurgery. An average Coleman score of 55 (maximum 103), indicating low overall study quality, however, emphasizes the need for large multi-institutional, randomized-clinical trials as the next vital step. Isothiocyanates may have antibacterial activity against Helicobacter pylori, but there are different variables related to Brassicaceae-derived samples that could affect their efficacy. This work studied the influence of source variety, concentration, gastric digestion, and encapsulation of samples on their bioactive response against Helicobacter pylori. The antibacterial activity of raw sprouts (red cabbage and red radish) showed the highest antibacterial effect, which was consistent with a higher amount of isothiocyanates. It decreased with gastric digestion, regardless of sample encapsulation. By contrast, adult red radish leaves became antibacterial after gastric digestion. Antioxidant activity on H. pylori-infected gastric cells was similar in all samples and followed an equivalent pattern with the changes in isothiocyanates. Raw samples decreased intracellular reactive oxygen species production, but they lost this capacity after gastric digestion, regardless whether the compounds were free or encapsulated. Red cabbage sprouts, red radish sprouts, and red radish roots produced a decrease in nitric oxide production. It was consistent with a modulation of the inflammatory response and was associated to isothiocyanates concentration. Encapsulated sprout samples retained part of their anti-inflammatory activity after gastric digestion. Adult raw red radish leaves were not active, but after digestion, they became anti-inflammatory. The results obtained in this study have shown that several variables could have a significant impact on the bioactive properties of Brassicaceae-derived samples against H. pylori, providing a starting point for the design and standardization of samples with specific bioactivities (antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory) potentially useful for the treatment of H. pylori infection. Ion implantation is a key capability for the semiconductor industry. As devices shrink, novel materials enter the manufacturing line, and quantum technologies transition to being more mainstream. Traditional implantation methods fall short in terms of energy, ion species, and positional precision. Here, we demonstrate 1 keV focused ion beam Au implantation into Si and validate the results via atom probe tomography. We show the Au implant depth at 1 keV is 0.8 nm and that identical results for low-energy ion implants can be achieved by either lowering the column voltage or decelerating ions using bias while maintaining a sub-micron beam focus. We compare our experimental results to static calculations using SRIM and dynamic calculations using binary collision approximation codes TRIDYN and IMSIL. A large discrepancy between the static and dynamic simulation is found, which is due to lattice enrichment with high-stopping-power Au and surface sputtering. Additionally, we demonstrate how model details are particularly important to the simulation of these low-energy heavy-ion implantations. Polypharmacy (intake of ≥5 drugs) is an important issue for patients with chronic diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS). We aimed to assess the prevalence of polypharmacy with regard to the severity of anxiety/depression and to comorbidities. Therefore, 374 MS patients from two German neurological sites were examined for drug burden, comorbidities, disability level and psychopathological measures capturing depression and anxiety using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS-A and HADS-D). We found that patients with a higher HADS-D score take more medication (r = 0.217, p < 0.001). Furthermore, patients with higher depression severity were more likely to show polypharmacy (p < 0.001). These differences were not significant for anxiety. (p = 0.413). Regarding the frequency of ≥1 comorbidities, there were no significant differences between patients with different HADS-A (p = 0.375) or HADS-D (p = 0.860) severity levels, whereas the concrete number of comorbidities showed a significant positive linear correlation with HADS-A (r = 0.10, p = 0.045) and HADS-D scores (r = 0.19, p < 0.001). In conclusion, symptoms of depression pose a relevant issue for MS patients and are correlated with polypharmacy and comorbidities. Simple Summary: There are different public events that cause a distress response in livestock. Persecution and takedown is a sport similar to rodeo that can affect the animals that compete in it. Therefore, in this study, the physiological stress response is evaluated in saliva samples from calves before, during, and after the event, measuring the levels of epinephrine, cortisol, serotonin, and dopamine. The results revealed that the sport of persecution and takedown could cause a punctual acute stressful effect that can be assumed by animals and not compromise animal welfare. Certain events can cause distress in cattle. In Spain, there is a sport similar to rodeo called persecution and takedown, in which calves are harassed and knocked down by riders. In this study, the physiological stress response of calves (n = 260) is assessed by measuring hormonal physiological parameters. Salivary samples were collected from Salers (n = 110) and Lidia (n = 150) calves before, during, and after the persecution and takedown event. The hormones epinephrine, cortisol, serotonin, and dopamine were determined in saliva samples using enzyme-immunoassay techniques. The results obtained revealed that epinephrine and cortisol levels increased during the event in Salers calves, with a significant increase (p < 0.05) in the case of epinephrine, although after the event, these values returned to their initial state. Therefore, this sport supposes an assumable punctual stressor stimulus for the animal. In contrast, in Lidia calves, cortisol and epinephrine levels decreased, with a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in the case of cortisol, which may be related to the temperament of this breed and facing a stressful situation in a different manner. This is confirmed by serotonin and dopamine levels that were altered in Lidia calves with respect to the other group studied. Forty-four bacterial strains isolated from greenhouse soil and beetroots were tested for their antagonistic activity against the plant-parasitic root-knot nematode (RKN) Meloidogyne incognita, which causes significant yield losses in a number of important crops worldwide. Through a novel combination of in vitro and on planta screening assays, Pseudomonas spp. 105 and 108 were identified as the most promising bacterial isolates. Both strains were evaluated for their potential to control different RKN population densities and as root protectants against nematode infestation. Regardless of the application method, both strains significantly reduced root galling caused by M. incognita. These two strains were subjected to whole genome sequencing and de novo genome assembly as a basis for phylogenetic and future functional characterization. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that both Pseudomonas strains cluster within the Pseudomonas fluorescens clade among previously characterized RKN antagonists and Pseudomonas-based biocontrol agents of plant diseases. Background: There is a paucity of reporting outcomes of complex aortic aneurysm treatment such as juxtarenal abdominal aortic aneurysms, where additional techniques to preserve renal artery perfusion are required. Methods: Retrospective analysis of consecutive patients who underwent emergent and elective aortic repair with fenestrated PMEGs between March 2019 and January 2023. Endpoints were technical success, reinterventions, secondary reinterventions and target vessel patency. Results: Forty-seven target vessels in 37 patients (23 male, median age 75 years) were targeted, of which 44 were renal arteries (RAs) with a mean diameter of 5.4 ± 1.0 mm. Thirteen were accessory RAs and six had a diameter ≤ 4 mm. Technical success rate was 87% overall; 97% for main and 62% for accessory RAs respectively. Target vessel patency and freedom from secondary reintervention was 100% and 97% at 30 days and 96% and 91% at one year, respectively. There was no 30-day mortality. Conclusion: Fenestrated physician-modified endografts are safe and effective for the treatment of patients with juxtarenal abdominal aortic aneurysms when incorporating main renal arteries. Limited technical success may be expected when targeting accessory renal arteries, especially when small in diameter. Facial palsy (FP) is a debilitating nerve pathology. Cross Face Nerve Grafting (CFNG) describes a surgical technique that uses nerve grafts to reanimate the paralyzed face. The sural nerve has been shown to be a reliable nerve graft with little donor side morbidity. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the microanatomy of the sural nerve. Biopsies were obtained from 15 FP patients who underwent CFNG using sural nerve grafts. Histological cross-sections were fixated, stained with PPD, and digitized. Histomorphometry and a validated software-based axon quantification were conducted. The median age of the operated patients was 37 years (5–62 years). There was a significant difference in axonal capacity decrease towards the periphery when comparing proximal vs. distal biopsies (p = 0.047), while the side of nerve harvest showed no significant differences in nerve caliber (proximal p = 0.253, distal p = 0.506) and axonal capacity for proximal and distal biopsies (proximal p = 0.414, distal p = 0.922). Age did not correlate with axonal capacity (proximal: R = −0.201, p = 0.603; distal: R = 0.317, p = 0.292). These novel insights into the microanatomy of the sural nerve may help refine CFNG techniques and individualize FP patient treatment plans, ultimately improving overall patient outcomes. Human handwriting is an everyday task performed regularly by most people. In the domain of robotic painting, multiple calligraphy machines exist which were built to replicate some aspects of human artistic writing; however, most projects are limited to a specific style of handwriting, often Chinese calligraphy. We propose a two-stage pipeline that allows industrial robots to write text in arbitrary typefaces and scripts using paintbrushes. In the first stage, we extract a set of strokes from character glyphs which are similar to how humans choose strokes during writing. In the second stage, we generate corresponding brush trajectories by applying a brush model to the extracted strokes. Our brush model computes the required brush pressure to achieve the given stroke width while also accounting for brush lag. We also present a method to automatically measure the parameters needed to predict brush lag by painting and recording calibration patterns. Our method generates trajectories for text in any given typeface, which, when executed by a robotic arm, results in legible written text. Bayesian imaging algorithms are becoming increasingly important in, e.g., astronomy, medicine and biology. Given that many of these algorithms compute iterative solutions to high-dimensional inverse problems, the efficiency and accuracy of the instrument response representation are of high importance for the imaging process. For efficiency reasons, point spread functions, which make up a large fraction of the response functions of telescopes and microscopes, are usually assumed to be spatially invariant in a given field of view and can thus be represented by a convolution. For many instruments, this assumption does not hold and degrades the accuracy of the instrument representation. Here, we discuss the application of butterfly transforms, which are linear neural network structures whose sizes scale sub-quadratically with the number of data points. Butterfly transforms are efficient by design, since they are inspired by the structure of the Cooley–Tukey fast Fourier transform. In this work, we combine them in several ways into butterfly networks, compare the different architectures with respect to their performance and identify a representation that is suitable for the efficient representation of a synthetic spatially variant point spread function up to a 1 % error. Campylobacter spp. are the main cause of bacterial gastroenteritis worldwide, and broiler chicks are the main vector of transmission to humans. The high prevalence of Campylobacter in poultry meat and the increase of antibiotic resistant strains have raised the need to identify new antimicrobial agents. For this reason, the aim of the current study was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of two extracts of olive leaf against antibiotic-resistant Campylobacter strains (C. jejuni and C. coli) isolated from poultry food chain. The extracts of olive leaf (E1 and E2) were markedly different in their chemical compositions. While E1 was composed predominantly of highly hydrophilic compounds such as hydroxytyrosol and hydroxytyrosol glucosides (14,708 mg/100 g), E2 mainly contained moderately hydrophilic compounds, with oleuropein (20,471 mg/100 g) being prevalent. All Campylobacter strains exhibited similar antibiotic profiles, being resistant to ciprofloxacin and tetracycline. E1 showed strong antibacterial activity and reduced bacterial growth from 4.12 to 8.14 log CFU/mL, depending on the strain. Hydroxytyrosol was the main compound responsible, causing the inhibition of growth of Campylobacter strains at low concentrations (0.1–0.25 mg/mL). E2 demonstrated a lower antibacterial effect than E1, reducing growth from 0.52 to 2.49 log CFU/mL. Introduction: The risk of prosthetic joint infection (PJI) in mega-prosthesis for malignancy is increased compared with non-tumor cases. While several studies describe PJI in tumor-related arthroplasty, prospective studies comparing infection characteristics among different joints are limited. The present study analyzes mega-arthroplasty for hip, knee, and shoulder malignancy and compares the epidemiology, diagnosis, microbe spectrum, treatments, and outcomes between the different entities. Methods: The retrospective inclusion criteria were as follows: (1) mega-arthroplasty (2) in the hip, knee, or shoulder joint and a total femur arthroplasty (3) following a malignant bone tumor or metastasis (4) between 1996 and 2019. All included patients were prospectively followed and invited for a renewed hospital examination, and their PJI characteristics (if identified) were analyzed using both retrospective as well as newly gained prospective data. A PJI was defined according to the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA) and re-infection was defined according to the modified Delphi Consensus criteria. Results: In total, 83 cases of tumor mega-arthroplasty at a mean follow-up of 3.9 years could be included (32 knee, 30 hip, and 19 shoulder cases and 2 cases of total femur arthroplasty). In total, 14 PJIs were identified, with chondrosarcoma in 6 and osteosarcoma in 3 being the leading tumor entities. Knee arthroplasty demonstrated a significantly higher rate of PJI (p = 0.027) compared with hips (28.1% vs. 6.7%), while no significant difference could be found between the knee and shoulder (10.5%) (p = 0.134) or among shoulder and hip cases (p = 0.631). The average time of PJI following primary implantation was 141.4 months in knee patients, 64.6 in hip patients, and 8.2 months in shoulder patients. Age at the time of the primary PJI, as well as the time of the first PJI, did not show significant differences among the groups. Thirteen of the fourteen patients with PJI had a primary bone tumor. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference in the disadvantage of primary bone tumors (p = 0.11). While the overall cancer-related mortality in the knee PJI group (10%) was low, it was 50% in the hip and 100% in the shoulder group. Conclusion: The risk of PJI in knee tumor arthroplasty is significantly increased compared with hips, while cancer-related mortality is significantly higher in hip PJI cases. At the same time, mega-prostheses appear to be associated with a higher risk of infection due to a primary bone tumor compared with metastases.
