The paper proposes a unsupervised method for detecting the three stages of sleep—wake, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and non-REM sleep—using biosignals obtained from a 61 GHz single frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar. To detect the subject's sleep stages based on non-learning techniques, the breathing and movement information characteristic of each sleep stage was extracted from the radar signals of the subject acquired in the sleep state and used as the feature factor tailored to the research objective. The experimental results derived from the clinical data obtained in the actual polysomnography (PSG) environment using FMCW radar show an average of 68% similarity to the actual three sleep stages observed in PSG. These results indicate the feasibility of using the FMCW radar sensor as an alternative to the conventional PSG-based method that poses multiple limitations to sleep-stage detection. We propose a novel approach to determine the respiration rate of a moving subject, in terms of the velocity change, by using a frequency-modulated continuous-wave radar. In conventional methods, the respiration rate is determined by considering the variation in the distance between the targets and radar; however, these methods are vulnerable to the subject's movements. The proposed approach estimates the respiration rate by considering the velocity, instead of the distance. An experiment was conducted to measure respiration in several subjects performing various movements. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is more robust to the subject's movements compared to conventional research methods, and can more accurately estimate the respiration rate. In non-contact vital sign monitoring using radar, radar signal distorted by the surrounding unspecified factors is unsuitable for monitoring vital signs. In order to monitor vital signs accurately, it is essential to compensate for distortion of radar signals caused by surrounding environmental factors. In this paper, we propose a driver vital signal compensation method in driving situations, including the driver's movements using a frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar. Driver's movement is quantified from the radar signal and used to set a distortion signal compensation index to compensate for the signal distortion induced in the driving situation that the driver's movement occurs. The experimental results show that the respiration rate estimated from the radar signal compensated through the proposed method is similar to the actual respiration rate than from the signal before calibration. These results confirm the possibility of using the proposed method in a non-statistic situation and effectiveness in estimating respiration rate reflecting human movement in monitoring vital signs using FMCW radar. Respiration and heartbeat are basic indicators of the physiological state of human beings. Frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar can sense micro-displacement in the human body surface without contact, and is used for vital-sign (respiration and heartbeat) monitoring. For the extraction of vital-sign, it is essential to select the target range containing vital-sign information. In this paper, we exploit the coherency of phase in different range-bins of FMCW radar to effectively select the range-bins that contain accurate signals for remote monitoring of human respiration and heartbeat. To quantify coherency, the spatial phase coherency (SPC) index is introduced. The experimental results show that the SPC can select a range-bin containing more accurate vital-sign signals than conventional methods. In this paper, we propose an unbiased difference power that is robust against noise as a feature for electromyography (EMG)-based gesture recognition. The proposed unbiased difference power is obtained by subtracting the noise-biased part from the difference power. We derive the difference power equation and discover that the difference power is biased by twice the noise power. For noise power estimation, we utilized the characteristics of the EMG signal and estimated the noise power from the resting period. For performance evaluation, we used EMG signals provided by the open source Ninapro project database. We used the recognition accuracy as an evaluation index. We compare the recognition accuracy of the case using the proposed unbiased feature with those of two conventional cases. Experimental results show that the proposed unbiased difference power improves the accuracy compared with conventional ones. As the noise level increases, cases where the proposed unbiased difference power is used show a clear improvement in accuracy compared with the two conventional cases. In this study, we proposed a precise onset and offset detection algorithm for muscle activation by using an electromyogram (EMG). The adaptive threshold was determined using the constant false alarm rate algorithm. The EMG signal was refined by morphological hole filling, which is used to close up and fill out missing information. By exploiting the EMG amplitude ratio in two channels, we significantly improved the offset detection performance. The proposed method does not require a training process, unlike conventional methods. In this paper, we provide the results of multi-passenger occupancy detection inside a vehicle obtained using a single-channel frequency-modulated continuous-wave radar. The physiological characteristics of the radar signal are analyzed in a time-frequency spectrum, and features are proposed based on these characteristics for multi-passenger occupancy detection. After clutter removal is applied, the spectral power and Wiener entropy are proposed as features to quantify physiological movements arising from breathing and heartbeat. Using the average means of both the power and Wiener entropy at seats 1 and 2, the feature distributions are expressed, and classification is performed. The multi-passenger occupancy detection performance is evaluated using linear discriminant analysis and maximum likelihood estimation.
