The Belt and Road Initiative was proposed by China in 2013 as a response to sluggish global economic growth. With most countries along the Belt and Road being developing countries, it is crucial to strengthen trade cooperation in agricultural products. However, the current literature lacks an analysis of the competitiveness and complementarity of agricultural products in these countries. This study aims to fill this gap by showing that the Belt and Road Initiative has reduced agricultural export competitiveness and increased agricultural trade complementarity. Several factors influence the similarity and complementarity of agricultural exports in participating countries along the Belt and Road, including geographical distance, level of economic development, free trade agreements, degree of country openness, exchange rates, cultural differences, share of agricultural value added, and level of infrastructure. The detailed analysis shows that the Belt and Road Initiative has significantly improved the quality of the agricultural exports of participating countries. Ensuring sustainable levels of rice yield has become a significant concern in recent years. To improve yields in rice production, it is essential to increase factor inputs and productivity. However, current research primarily focuses on general grain productivity, rather than rice. In this study, utilize the DEA-Malmquist index to present a comprehensive temporal and spatial analysis of rice productivity and its determinants in China. Our findings reveal that the overall efficiency of rice production in China exhibits a fluctuating upward trend, with technological progress being the primary driver of improvement in production efficiency. Moreover, rice production efficiency demonstrates a distribution pattern that decreases from east to west, with resource endowment, production conditions, socioeconomic development levels, and the political system being crucial factors influencing efficiency. This study proposes novel ideas for structural adjustments and regional divisions within China's rice industry and provides a theoretical foundation for governments to develop evidence-based policies. Polydatin (PD) is a natural compound with anticancer activities, but the underlying mechanisms remain largely unclear. To understand how PD inhibited hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), we studied PD treatments in HCC HepG2 and SK-HEP1 cells, and normal liver HL-7702 cells. PD selectively blocked the proliferation of HCC cells but showed low toxicity in normal cells, while the effects of doxorubicin (DOX) and cisplatin (DDP) on HCC and normal liver cells were opposite. In the cotreatment studies, PD synergistically improved the inhibitory activities of DOX and DDP in HCC cells but alleviated their toxicity in HL-7702 cells. Furthermore, RNA-seq studies of PD-treated HepG2 cells revealed multiple altered signaling pathways. We identified 1679 Differentially Expressed Genes (DEGs) with over a 2.0-fold change in response to PD treatment. Integrative analyses using the DEGs in PD-treated HepG2 cells and DEGs in a TCGA dataset of HCC patients revealed five PD-repressed DEGs regulating mitotic spindle midzone formation. The expression of these genes showed significantly positive correlation with poor clinical outcomes of HCC patients, suggesting that mitotic machinery was likely a primary target of PD. In live cells, proteins and nucleic acids can associate together through multivalent interactions, and form relatively isolated phases that undertake designated biological functions and activities. In the past decade, liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS) has gradually been recognized as a general mechanism for the intracellular organization of biomolecules. LLPS regulates the assembly and composition of dozens of membraneless organelles and condensates in cells. Due to the altered physiological conditions or genetic mutations, phase-separated condensates may undergo aberrant formation, maturation or gelation that contributes to the onset and progression of various diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders and cancers. In this review, we summarize the properties of different membraneless organelles and condensates, and discuss multiple phase separation-regulated biological processes. Based on the dysregulation and mutations of several key regulatory proteins and signaling pathways, we also exemplify how aberrantly regulated LLPS may contribute to human diseases. Simple Summary: YY1 regulates various cancer-related genes and activates key oncoproteins. In this study, we discovered that the oncoprotein binding (OPB) domain of YY1 is both necessary and stimulatory to its oligomerization. The hydrophobic residues, especially F219, in the OPB are essential to YY1 intermolecular interaction. Strikingly, the mutations of the hydrophobic residues showed better ability than wild-type YY1 in promote breast cancer cell proliferation and migration. Our further study revealed that YY1 proteins with mutated hydrophobic residues in the OPB domain showed improved binding affinity to EZH2. Overall, our data support the model of a mutually exclusive process between oligomerization of YY1 and its regulation of the oncoproteins EZH2, AKT and MDM2. Yin Yang 1 (YY1) plays an oncogenic role through regulating the expression of various cancer-related genes and activating key oncoproteins. Previous research reported that YY1 protein formed dimers or oligomers without definite biological implications. In this study, we first demonstrated the oncoprotein binding (OPB) and zinc finger (ZF) domains of YY1 as the regions involved in its intermolecular interactions. ZFs are well-known for protein dimerization, so we focused on the OPB domain. After mutating three hydrophobic residues in the OPB to alanines, we discovered that YY1(F219A) and YY1(3A), three residues simultaneously replaced by alanines, were defective of intermolecular interaction. Meanwhile, the OPB peptide could robustly facilitate YY1 protein oligomerization. When expressed in breast cancer cells with concurrent endogenous YY1 knockdown, YY1(F219A) and (3A) mutants showed better capacity than wt in promoting cell proliferation and migration, while their interactions with EZH2, AKT and MDM2 showed differential alterations, especially with improved EZH2 binding affinity. Our study revealed a crucial role of the OPB domain in facilitating YY1 oligomerization and suggested a mutually exclusive regulation between YY1-mediated enhancer formation and its activities in promoting oncoproteins. Cold-rolling oily sludge contains high amounts of oil and iron resources that can be recycled by pyrolysis. We investigated the pyrolysis behavior and volatile products of oily sludge by thermogravimetric analysis (TG) coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and a pyrolyzer (PY) coupled with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The pyrolysis process was divided into three stages: H2O drying and CO2 desorption at low temperatures (below 393 K); the volatilization of low-molecular-weight organics and the covalent bond cleavage of C=C, C-O, and C-H in the medium-molecular-weight organics at medium temperatures (393–844 K); and chain scission of the high-molecular-weight organics and reduction of iron oxides by CO at high temperatures (above 844 K). The weight losses of oily sludge in the three stages were 0.4 wt %, 47.9 wt %, and 14.7 wt %, respectively. According to the kinetic models, stage 2 and stage 3 could be described with the second-order and third-order reaction models, and their activation energies were 40.22 kJ/mol and 214.99 kJ/mol, respectively. The compounds in the volatile products were identified by FTIR and GC/MS. The organics in the volatile products from stage 2 pyrolysis mainly consisted of aliphatic hydrocarbons, fatty acids, esters, ketones, and nitrogen compounds, while the volatile products from stage 3 predominantly contained aliphatic hydrocarbons, mononuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, and small amounts of nitrogen compounds and CO, suggesting the occurrence of chain scission of heavy organics. Aberrant metabolism is one of the hallmarks of cancers. The contributions of dysregulated metabolism to cancer development, such as tumor cell survival, metastasis and drug resistance, have been extensively characterized. "Reprogrammed" metabolic pathways in cancer cells are mainly represented by excessive glucose consumption and hyperactive de novo lipogenesis. Natural compounds with anticancer activities are constantly being demonstrated to target metabolic processes, such as glucose transport, aerobic glycolysis, fatty acid synthesis and desaturation. However, their molecular targets and underlying anticancer mechanisms remain largely unclear or controversial. Mounting evidence indicated that these natural compounds could modulate the expression of key regulatory enzymes in various metabolic pathways at transcriptional and translational levels. Meanwhile, natural compounds could also inhibit the activities of these enzymes by acting as substrate analogs or altering their protein conformations. The actions of natural compounds in the crosstalk between metabolism modulation and cancer cell destiny have become increasingly attractive. In this review, we summarize the activities of natural small molecules in inhibiting key enzymes of metabolic pathways. We illustrate the structural characteristics of these compounds at the molecular level as either inhibitor of various enzymes or regulators of metabolic pathways in cancer cells. Receptors are macromolecules that transmit information regulating cell proliferation, differentiation, migration and apoptosis, play key roles in oncogenic processes and correlate with the prognoses of cancer patients. Thus, targeting receptors to constrain cancer development and progression has gained widespread interest. Small molecule compounds of natural origin have been widely used as drugs or adjuvant chemotherapeutic agents in cancer therapies due to their activities of selectively killing cancer cells, alleviating drug resistance and mitigating side effects. Meanwhile, many natural compounds, including those targeting receptors, are still under laboratory investigation for their anti-cancer activities and mechanisms. In this review, we classify the receptors by their structures and functions, illustrate the natural compounds targeting these receptors and discuss the mechanisms of their anti-cancer activities. Amine-functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a promising strategy for the high-efficiency capture and separation of CO2. In this work, by tuning the ratio of 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H3BTC) to 5-aminoisophthalic acid (5-NH2-H2IPA), we designed and synthesized a series of amine-functionalized highly stable Ti-based MOFs (named MIP-207-NH2-n, in which n represents 15%, 25%, 50%, 60%, and 100%). The structural analysis shows that the original framework of MIP-207 in the MIP-207-NH2-n (n = 15%, 25%, and 50%) MOFs remains intact when the mole ratio of ligand H3BTC to 5-NH2-H2IPA is less than 1 to 1 in the resulting MOFs. By the introduction of amino groups, MIP-207-NH2-25% demonstrates outstanding CO2 capture performance up to 3.96 and 2.91 mmol g−1, 20.7% and 43.3% higher than those of unmodified MIP-207 at 0 and 25 °C, respectively. Furthermore, the breakthrough experiment indicates that the dynamic CO2 adsorption capacity and CO2/N2 separation factors of MIP-207-NH2-25% are increased by about 25% and 15%, respectively. This work provides an additional strategy to construct amine-functionalized MOFs with the maintenance of the original MOF structure and high performance of CO2 capture and separation. Simple Summary: Both Yin Yang 1 (YY1) and enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2) are oncogenes with overexpressed statuses in cancers. As a transcription factor, YY1 recruits EZH2 through its oncoprotein binding (OPB) domain to repress gene expression. In this study, we identified the interaction domain of YY1 on EZH2 protein with amino acids 493–519, named the YY1 protein binding (YPB) domain. Synthetic peptides using YPB and OPB domain sequences effectively blocked endogenous YY1-EZH2 interaction. Functionally, YPB and OPB peptides could efficiently inhibit the proliferation of breast cancer cells, promote their apoptosis, and reduce tumor growth in a xenograft mouse model. Using chromatin immunoprecipitation DNA sequencing (ChIP-seq) analysis, we discovered that YPB and OPB peptides could interfere with H3K27 trimethylation of multiple genes. Eventually, we identified that YPB and OPB peptides primarily targeted the PTENP1 gene and validated its importance in the anticancer activity of the two peptides. Enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2) is a methyltransferase to mediate lysine 27 trimethylation in histone H3 (i.e., H3K27me3) and repress gene expression. In solid tumors, EZH2 promotes oncogenesis and is considered a therapeutic target. As a transcription factor, Yin Yang 1 (YY1) recruits EZH2 through its oncoprotein binding (OPB) domain to establish gene repression. In this study, we mapped the YY1 protein binding (YPB) domain on EZH2 to a region of 27 amino acids. Both YPB and OPB domain synthetic peptides could disrupt YY1EZH2 interaction, markedly reduce breast cancer cell viability, and efficiently inhibit tumor growth in a xenograft mouse model. We analyzed MDA-MB-231 cells treated with YPB, OPB, and control peptides by chromatin immunoprecipitation DNA sequencing (ChIP-seq) using an antibody against H3K27me3. YPB and OPB treatments altered H3K27me3 on 465 and 1137 genes, respectively, compared to the control. Of these genes, 145 overlapped between the two peptides. Among them, PTENP1, the PTEN pseudogene, showed reduced H3K27me3 signal when treated by either YPB or OPB peptide. Consistently, the two peptides enhanced both PTENP1 and PTEN expression with concomitantly reduced AKT activation. Alternative pre-mRNA splicing is a crucial process that allows the generation of diversified RNA and protein products from a multi-exon gene. In tumor cells, this mechanism can facilitate cancer development and progression through both creating oncogenic isoforms and reducing the expression of normal or controllable protein species. We recently demonstrated that an alternative cyclin D-binding myb-like transcription factor 1 (DMTF1) pre-mRNA splicing isoform, DMTF1β, is increasingly expressed in breast cancer and promotes mammary tumorigenesis in a transgenic mouse model. Aberrant pre-mRNA splicing is a typical event occurring for many cancer-related functional proteins. In this review, we introduce general aberrant pre-mRNA splicing in cancers and discuss its therapeutic application using our recent discovery of the oncogenic DMTF1 isoform as an example. We also summarize new insights in designing novel targeting strategies of cancer therapies based on the understanding of deregulated pre-mRNA splicing mechanisms.
