This paper aims to investigate the effects of soil penetration resistance, tillage depth, and operating speeds on the deformation and fatigue of the subsoiling shovel based on the real-time measurement of tractor-operating conditions data. Various types of sensors, such as force, displacement, and angle, were integrated. The software and hardware architectures of the monitoring system were designed to develop a field operation condition parameter monitoring system, which can measure the tractor's traction force of the lower tie-bar, the real-time speed, the latitude and longitude, tillage depth, and the strain of the subsoiling shovel and other condition parameters in real-time. The time domain extrapolation method was used to process the measured data to obtain the load spectrum. The linear damage accumulation theory was used to calculate the load damage of the subsoiling shovel. The magnitude of the damage value was used to characterize the severity of the operation. The signal acquisition test and typical parameter test were conducted for the monitoring system, and the test results showed that the reliability and accuracy of the monitoring system met the requirements. The subsoiling operation test of the system was carried out, which mainly included two kinds of soil penetration resistances (1750 kPa and 2750 kPa), three kinds of tillage depth (250 mm, 300 mm, and 350 mm), and three kinds of operation speed (4 km/h low speed, 6 km/h medium speed, and 8 km/h high speed), totaling 18 kinds of test conditions. Eventually, the effects of changes in working condition parameters of the subsoiling operation on the overall damage of subsoiling shovels and the differences in damage occurring between the front and rear rows of subsoiling shovels under the same test conditions were analyzed. The test results show that under the same soil penetration resistance, the overall damage sustained by the subsoiling shovels increases regardless of the increase in the tillage depth or operating speed. In particular, the increase in the tillage depth increased the severity of subsoiling shovel damage by 19.73%, which was higher than the 17.48% increase due to soil penetration resistance and the 13.07% increase due to the operating speed. It should be noted that the front subsoiling shovels consistently sustained more damage than the rear, and the difference was able to reach 16.86%. To address the problem of large tractive resistance in traditional subsoiling methods, this paper designed a pulse-type gas explosion subsoiler, as well as an air-blown double-ended chisel type subsoiling shovel and a conduit. The mathematical equation of the influence of the structural parameters of the subsoiler on the groove profile is established. The EDEM 2022 software was used to simulate the subsoiling operation process. The soil disturbance law of the chisel subsoiler was analyzed by the change of soil particle velocity. The optimum value interval of quadratic regression orthogonal rotation combination test factors was determined by using the steepest climb test, with specific tillage resistance and filling power as evaluation indicators. Based on the Box–Behnken design test, a second-order regression model of response value and significance parameter was obtained, and an optimal combination was found by optimizing the significance parameter. The effects of subsoiling air pressure, pulse width and pulse interval on evaluation indicators were analyzed by the response surface method; the test results show that when the air pressure was 0.8 MPa, the pulse width was 0.17 s and the pulse interval was 0.12 s, and the specific tillage resistance was 0.4421 N/mm2 and the filling power was 18.5%; a comparative test between the pulse-type gas explosion subsoiler and a continuous gas explosion subsoiler was carried out, and the specific tillage resistance was reduced by 12.2% and the filling power was reduced by 10.5%; the comparative test shows that the pulse-type gas explosion subsoiler has smaller tractive resistance per unit area and smaller disturbance to soil. To achieve high maize (Zea mays L.) yields and quality grain, it is necessary to develop stress-resistant cultivars and related cultivation practices, aiming to maximize efficiency. Thus, our objectives were (i) to investigate the impact of tillage practices and maize hybrids (which have improved over time) on yield and its components, and (ii) to characterize the response pattern of maize hybrid grain nutrient quality components to subsoiling. To achieve this, we conducted field trials with five maize hybrids from different eras under two tillage practices: rotary tillage and subsoiling. We compared grain yield, nutritional quality, and other indicators across different tillage conditions from the 1970s to the 2010s. The main results of this study are as follows: under rotary tillage conditions, the 2010s hybrid (DH618) significantly increased yields (9.37–55.89%) compared to hybrids from the 1970s–2000s. After subsoiling, the physiologically mature grains of all hybrids exhibited minimal changes in crude protein and fat content, while there was a significant reduction in the total soluble sugar content of the grains. After subsoiling, there was a substantial 8.14 to 12.79 percent increase in total starch accumulation in the grain for all hybrids during the period of 47–75 days post-anthesis. Furthermore, during the period of 47–75 days after anthesis, the consumption of grain crude protein significantly contributed to the accumulation of total starch in the grains. Ultimately, subsoiling significantly increased the yield of each hybrid and enhanced the total grain starch content at physiological maturity of all hybrids, with the 2010s hybrid (DH618) performing exceptionally well. The high number of grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) cultivars grown world-wide are described and identified according to detailed morphological and morphometric descriptor lists. The grapevine leaf is of utmost importance in characterization, despite its traits being very sensitive to environmental factors. In this study, the effect of irrigation/drought stress on the individual leaf morphology and morphometry of the 'Hárslevelű' grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) cultivar was examined. To verify the effect of the applied irrigation methods (drip and subsoil irrigation) on the plant's water status, water potential measurements were carried out during the 2022 season. The effect of the applied treatments on the vegetative growth was evaluated according to point quadrat and a multichannel LiDAR analysis in order to describe the width of the canopy area, row volume, and area coverage index. The individual leaf morphology was assessed via traditional morphometry and colorimetry. Our results showed that rainfed plants had a significantly lower stem ψ compared to the drip- and subsoil-irrigated plants at all examined dates. The point quadrat results indicate that the leaf layer number was significantly (p < 0.05) influenced by the position, while the treatment showed no effect on the leaf layer number. The leaf colorimetry showed a difference among the samples, as significant alterations were found in 28 out of the 32 examined color properties. No-tillage of summer maize after the harvest of winter wheat is the primary agricultural practice on the North China Plain. However, prolonged no-tillage without deep tillage practices negatively impacts soil properties, which is detrimental to the growth and yield of summer maize. In this study, Xianyu 688 and Jifeng 2 were used as test maize materials, no-tillage and surface fertilizing with normal nitrogen (N) (BC240), no-tillage and surface fertilizing with N reduction (BC180), subsoiling layered fertilization with normal N (FC240) and subsoiling layered fertilization with N reduction (FC180)were designed, in order to assess root distribution, N utilization and grain yield of summer maize. In the two maize cultivars, the FC240 and FC180 treatments significantly reduced soil bulk density in the 10–50 cm depth soil layer compared to the other two treatments, and also increased total N content in the 20–50 cm depth soil layer. Compare BC 240 treatment, the FC240 treatment significantly increased root length in the 20–40 cm soil layer and root rap bleeding. Additionally, the FC240 and FC180 treatments enhanced dry matter and N accumulation, grain yield, N uptake efficiency and N fertilizer partial factor productivity. In various treatment, Xianyu 688 exhibited increased grain yield, N uptake efficiency and N fertilizer partial factor productivity compare with Jifeng 2. When employing a total N application level of 180–240 kg N/hm2, the synergistic improvement of summer maize grain yield and N efficiency can be achieved by incorporating subsoiling combined with layered nitrogen application. Soil–structure interaction (SSI) refers to the dynamic interaction between a structure and the surrounding soil on which it rests. The behavior of the soil can significantly affect the response of the building structure. In the context of civil engineering and structural analysis, SSI becomes particularly important when considering the response of structures to dynamic loads such as earthquakes or so-called paraseismic loads, e.g., mining tremors. Several factors contribute to SSI. Soil and building structure material properties, foundation type, and loading conditions are the most important parameters. The article concerns SSI in the case of mining rock bursts in Poland. The influence of changes in site material conditions and building material properties on the SSI phenomenon was investigated. A few variants of different properties of typical construction materials (brick, reinforced concrete, and cellular concrete) in the case of selected representative building structure were considered. The subsoil material properties from the wide range were also taken into account. Numerical three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) analysis was applied. The adopted models of the soil-structure system were verified by data from in situ experimental vibration measurements. Aphids are insect pests that suck phloem sap and introduce salivary proteins into plant tissues through saliva secretion. The effector of salivary proteins plays a key role in the modulation of host plant defense responses and enhancing aphid host adaptation. Based on previous transcriptome sequencing results, a candidate effector cyclin-dependent kinase-like (CDK) was identified from the grain aphid Sitobion avenae. In this study, the function of SaCDK in wheat defense response and the adaptation of S. avenae was investigated. Our results showed that the transient overexpression of SaCDK in tobacco Nicotiana benthamiana suppressed cell death triggered by mouse pro-apoptotic protein-BAX or Phytophthora infestans PAMP-INF1. SaCDK, delivered into wheat cells through a Pseudomonas fluorescens-mediated bacterial type III secretion system, suppressed callose deposition in wheat seedlings, and the overexpression of SaCDK in wheat significantly decreased the expression levels of salicylic acid and jasmonic acid signaling pathway-related genes phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL), pathogenesis-related 1 protein (PR1), lipoxygenase (LOX) and Ω-3 fatty acid desaturase (FAD). In addition, aphid bioassay results showed that the survival and fecundity of S. avenae were significantly increased while feeding on the wheat plants carrying SaCDK. Taken together, our findings demonstrate that the salivary protein SaCDK is involved in inhibiting host defense response and improving its host adaptation, which lays the foundation to uncover the mechanism of the interaction of cereal aphids and host plants. Physical and chemical soil properties are affected by wildfires. Post-wildfire runoff may contain nutrient loads and particulate matter that negatively impact soil, surface water, and groundwater. According to data from the Copernicus Emergency Management Service, devastating wildfires on Northern Euboea Island, Greece, in August 2021 destroyed more than 50,910 ha. Coniferous and broad-leaved forests mostly covered the affected area, according to CORINE. Topsoil and subsoil samples were collected from burned areas and analyzed for physicochemical parameters: pH, electrical conductivity, and organic carbon. After digestion with aqua regia, the Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu, Mn, Fe, Cr, Ni, Co, and As 'pseudo total' contents were determined. Leaching experiments were conducted to evaluate the levels of potentially toxic elements leaching from soils and the impact of environmental conditions. The leachates were analyzed for Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu, Mn, Fe, Cr, Ni, Co, As, Ca, Mg, Na, and K. Overall, most of the concentrations of the studied elements were higher in fire-affected soils than in unburned ones. Similar findings for element concentrations have been confirmed between topsoils and subsoils, with the latter exhibiting lower values. The increased 'pseudo total' values of Cr, Ni, Fe, Co, and Mn in all the soil samples, along with the medium to high positive correlations between them, indicate that geogenic factors play a major role in controlling element enrichment. High concentrations of Mn, Ni, and As in soil leachates exceeded the EU maximum permissible limits, indicating a potential ecological risk to natural water quality and, subsequently, to human health. The correlation coefficients between elements in fire-affected and unburned soils suggested that their geogenic origins were mainly associated with the ultramafic rocks and related ores of the study area. The elements' concentrations in the leachates were significantly lower than their 'pseudo total' contents in soil, with no correlation between them. The reducing order of elements leachability did not coincide with the decreasing order of elements 'pseudo total' median values in soils. The decreasing order of element abundance in soil leachates coincides with their relative extractability and differs from the decreasing order of their 'pseudo total' median values in soils. Neutral to alkaline, soil pH conditions and organic carbon content, which substantially influence the retention and mobility of elements, presented different patterns among the studied elements, with only Mn, Cr, and Co showing correlations. Determining the deformation trend of silt subsoil under long-term aircraft loading by conventional numerical methods based on finite elements is challenging and poses several limitations. In this study, a boundary surface model for remolded saturated silt considering the influence of the soil dry density was developed, and an explicit integral algorithm with error control was used to incorporate the model into a user-defined material subroutine that the finite element software (ABAQUS 6.14) could call. In this way, the consolidated undrained dynamic triaxial test of a soil unit was established for simulation and model validation, which corroborated that the model could describe the dynamic properties of the saturated silt. Then, a numerical model of the runway with layered compaction and different compaction degrees was also developed to numerically analyze the deformation of the subsoil under cyclic aircraft loading. The results showed that the subsoil deformation increased continuously with the increase of cycle number. However, the deformation rate decreased gradually, and the silt subsoil deformation remained stable after 50 loading cycles. After the same number of loading cycles, the cumulative plastic deformation of the subsoil model with the overall compaction degree of 94% was smaller than that of the model with layered compaction. It was also shown that different aircraft speeds have minimal effect on the cumulative plastic deformation of the subsoil. Nevertheless, the ultimate cumulative plastic deformation is larger, as the loading duration is longer at low aircraft speeds. It indicates that strictly controlling of the compaction degree within a certain range of load influence is imperative in practical engineering, as it reduces the associated costs. In northern Campania (Southern Italy), the historic center of many towns is characterized by the widespread presence of cavities in the subsoil, excavated over the centuries for quarrying tuff blocks for buildings, along with cathedrals, churches and chapels. A singular feature of these places of worship is, in fact, the presence of a wide and frequently connected network of underground cavities and tunnels, which were used for hydraulic, religious or connecting purposes. The cavity network is often unknown, abandoned or even buried, thus representing a risk for their susceptibility to sinkholes. Such elements are important as cultural heritage of inestimable value and as attractors for tourism; for this reason, the multidisciplinary study conducted on a place of worship in the Caserta area is illustrated herein: the Cloister of Sant'Agostino, in Caserta (XVI century CE). A geological and geotechnical characterization of the subsoil was performed at first. A laser scanner survey of the accessible cavities and the external churchyard was carried out. The resulting 3D model of the underground sector allowed for a clear understanding of the room size, their location, the levels and the path of the corridors. To understand the extension and layout of the crypts, Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) surveys were undertaken in the surrounding areas. The analysis of the ERT measurements revealed some anomalies that could be ascribed to unknown structures (crypts). Finally, numerical methods were applied to estimate the stress state of the soft rocks and the potential areas of crisis, with preliminary assessments of the influence of the presence of cavities on the stability of the subsoil. The results allowed us to improve the knowledge of the study site and provide useful data for the planning of future targeted investigations, underlining how integrated research between applied disciplines can provide indispensable support both in the management and mitigation of geological risks in urban areas and in the sustainable reuse of hypogea. Featured Application: This work proves the feasibility and effectiveness of upcutting belt motion to reduce the draught resistance of subsoilers, which is also a reference and experience for the optimization and modification of other soil-engaging components. Conventional subsoiling has the problem of excessive draught resistance, which has long been a major concern. A great reduction in draught is urgently required to make better use of the subsoiling technique with many agronomic benefits. In this study, an attempt was made to test the draught reduction performance of a series of tools with continuous belt motions. Comparative simulations between regular tools and belt tools were carried out using the discrete element method (DEM) to investigate the effects of belt motion on tool force, soil disturbance characteristics, particle velocity distribution, and soil deformation and movement patterns. The results indicated that the belt motion reduced the draught force by 13.18%, 25.21%, 37.98%, and 44.64% for the rake angles of 30°, 45°, 60°, and 75°, respectively, and caused acceptable increases in downward vertical force. The changes in soil disturbance, particle velocity distribution, and soil deformation and movement patterns contributed to the reduction in draught force. Negative effects on soil disturbance were acceptable considering the 13.18% to 44.64% reductions in draught force. The present study suggests that the belt motion has a great application potential for draught reduction in subsoiling. Also, this can serve as a theoretical foundation for future studies. Pile foundations are used to support superstructures and play an important role in the safety of these structures. The performance of pile foundations generally depends on the conditions of the pile itself and the material under the pile tip(i.e., bottom), especially for end-bearing piles installed in soft soil volumes. Therefore, to assess the performance of existing pile foundations, it is crucial not only to evaluate the structural integrity of the pile itself, but also to assess the ground conditions, such as subsoil stiffness beneath the pile foundation tip. Accessing the subsoil beneath the pile foundation tip is highly challenging in the field. Hence, there is a need for the development of non-destructive pile evaluation methods that allow the assessment of subsoil stiffness beneath the pile tip without direct access to the subsoil. Various non-destructive methods have been developed for pile performance assessment. However, these conventional non-destructive methods are primarily designed for assessing the structural integrity of the pile itself, and there are no existing non-destructive pile integrity testing methods applicable to evaluate the subsoil stiffness beneath the pile tip. In this study, a non-destructive method is developed to evaluate the subsurface soil stiffness beneath pile tip without direct access. The proposed method involves applying impact loading to the easily accessible pile head and measuring the elastic waves propagated within the pile foundation due to the impact loading. These wave signals are then recorded at the pile head. The measured time–history signals are decomposed using harmonic wavelet transform. This allows the obtainment of well-defined magnitude and phase information over time for various individual frequency components composing the wave. In this study, a method is proposed to assess the stiffness of the subsoil beneath the pile tip by simultaneously utilizing the magnitude and phase information of the measured signals obtained through harmonic wavelet transform. To facilitate this, a step-by-step data analysis procedure for evaluating the subsoil stiffness beneath the pile tip is introduced. To validate the proposed method, numerical simulations were conducted using ABAQUS. The experimental data obtained from the numerical simulations were processed using the proposed method to assess the subsoil stiffness beneath the pile. The determined subsoil stiffness was then compared with the exact soil stiffness used in the numerical simulation to evaluate the validity of the proposed method. The need for sustainable urban growth management and preventive conservation of built elements constitute the key factors in today's increasing demand for the better understanding of subsoil. This information, mainly available from geotechnical surveys, can be integrated into spatial databases to produce operational models. Aiming to generate strategies that enable the visualisation of underground properties in highly anthropised environments, the following four-phase methodology has been proposed: (a) Gathering of geotechnical data; (b) Spatial and statistical analysis; (c) Database design; (d) Generation of 2D and 3D models. Following the aforementioned criteria and using open sources, a spatial dataset of 650 points located within the historical centre of Seville (Spain) has been developed. This urban area is characterised by the heterogeneous distribution of its soil layers and their geotechnical properties. The results show that the application of this method enables a prompt and efficient display of the distribution of geotechnical layers in urban and metropolitan environments, by considering the variations in their mechanical properties. This simplified approach therefore establishes a new starting point for the development of predictive strategies based on approaches of a more complex nature that facilitate the analysis of the interactions between subsoil, buildings, and infrastructures. Subsoiling practice is an essential tillage practice in modern agriculture. Tillage forces and energy consumption during subsoiling are extremely high, which reduces the economic benefits of subsoiling technology. In this paper, a cicada-inspired biomimetic subsoiling tool (CIST) was designed to reduce the draught force during subsoiling. A soil–tool interaction model was developed using EDEM and validated using lab soil bin tests with sandy loam soil. The validated model was used to optimize the CIST and evaluate its performance by comparing it with a conventional chisel subsoiling tool (CCST) at various working depths (250–350 mm) and speeds (0.5–2.5 ms−1). Results showed that both simulated draught force and soil disturbance behaviors agreed well with those from lab soil bin tests, as indicated by relative errors of <6.1%. Compared with the CCST, the draught forces of the CIST can be reduced by 17.7% at various working depths and speeds; the design of the CIST obviously outperforms some previous biomimetic designs with largest draught force reduction of 7.29–12.8%. Soil surface flatness after subsoiling using the CIST was smoother at various depths than using the CCST. Soil loosening efficiencies of the CIST can be raised by 17.37% at various working speeds. Results from this study implied that the developed cicada-inspired subsoiling tool outperforms the conventional chisel subsoiling tool on aspects of soil disturbance behaviors, draught forces, and soil loosening efficiencies. This study can have implications for designing high-performance subsoiling tools with reduced draught forces and energy requirements, especially for the subsoiling tools working under sandy loam soil. This study presents a novel methodology for determining the apparent thermal diffusivity of subsoil in situ, employing two heat transfer models within the subsurface: one method is based on heat conduction caused by air temperature oscillations, while the other considers heat transmission via both conduction and convection due to groundwater flow. Differential equations were solved, and non-linear regression analysis was employed. This method has direct applications in various engineering and environmental domains, such as underground transmission lines, oil and gas pipelines, radioactive waste management, and geothermal systems, especially in the context of implementing horizontal geothermal collectors (HGC). The apparent thermal diffusivity value of 1.514 × 10−6 m2 s−1, within a 95% confidence interval spanning 1.512 × 10−6 m2 s−1 and 1.516 × 10−6 m2 s−1, was obtained from the section between 1.67 and 3.86 m depth in a research borehole located in Asturias, Northern Spain, using twenty-one temperature sensors. This document presents a study of thermal inertia in the subsoil adjacent to the Civil Engineering laboratory of the Technological Institute of Sonora (ITSON) in the south of Sonora, Mexico, in service of the development of a solution proposal of a ground-coupled air heat exchanger for the cooling months. The research was divided into three phases: first, the monitoring of temperature in 10 layers of the ground; second, the analysis of thermal ground properties; and last, the design and simulation of a ground-coupled air heat exchanger. The objectives were to determine the variation in the thermal inertia of the soil with depth and over time and to determine the optimum depth for a ground-coupled heat exchanger system. The second objective was to develop a design proposal for a ground-coupled heat exchanger for the university laboratory. We found that the optimum depth is 3.0 m in a soil with high-compressibility clay with 21% humidity and 0.152 W/mK of thermal conductivity. However, the proposed design identified the best depth for the cooling system as 3 m considering a ground-coupled heat exchanger for a volume of 222.2 m3, corresponding to the volume of the classrooms of the building. With this design, the approach was to reduce the temperature by at least 10 °C on the hottest day (41 °C) of the year studied. We concluded that with this kind of system, the climate of the building studied could reduce the thermal load of active AC systems and reduce the energy load by 59%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Building information modeling (BIM) in the planning and construction of infrastructure projects, such as roads, tunnels, and excavations, requires the generation of comprehensive 3D subsoil models that encompass relevant geological and geotechnical information. Presently, this process relies on the deterministic interpolation of discrete data points obtained from exploratory boreholes and soundings, resulting in a single deterministic prediction. Commonly employed interpolation methods for this purpose include radial basis function and kriging. This contribution introduces probabilistic methods for quantifying prediction uncertainty. The proposed modeling approach is illustrated using simple examples, demonstrating how to use sequential Gaussian and Indicator Simulation techniques to model sedimentary processes such as erosion and lenticular bedding. Subsequently, a site in Munich serves as a case study. The widely used industry foundation classes (IFC) schema allows the integration of the model into the BIM environment. A mapping procedure allows transferring voxel models to the IFC schema. This article discusses the significance of incorporating uncertainty quantification into subsoil modeling and shows its integration into the BIM framework. The proposed approach and its efficient integration with evolving BIM standards and methodologies provides valuable insights for the planning and construction of infrastructure projects. Determining soil and water conditions is essential for designing the optimal foundation and safely transferring loads, including the self-weight of structures, to the ground. Excessive or uneven settlement of the subsoil may ultimately lead to the formation of structural cracks in buildings or the loss of slope stability. In extreme cases, the damage results in structural failure. This paper presents the application of simple solutions from plasticity theory—an evaluation of the upper and lower bounds of the exact solution—to estimate the slope safety factor. It is demonstrated that simple kinematically admissible mechanisms for the non-associated flow rule provide solutions are close to those obtained from the traditional Fellenius method. The amount of disturbed soil at various depths resulting from subsoilers with different parameters has an important effect on soil properties (e.g., bulk density and water infiltration). The information regarding the effects of subsoiling on the characteristics of soil water infiltration is essential for the design of subsoiling tools. In this study, the effects of the wing mounting height (h) (75–155 mm) of the subsoiler on soil disturbance and soil water infiltration were modelled using HYDRUS-2D and validated using field experiments. Results showed that reducing h values resulted in larger soil disturbance area ratios, soil water infiltration rates (f(t)), distances of vertical wetting front movement (DVWs), accumulative infiltrations (AINs), and soil moisture contents at depths of 10–30 cm. The relationships among characteristics of soil water infiltration, h and time (t), were developed. The stable infiltration rates (fs) varied quadratically with h and the corresponding coefficient of determination (R2) was 0.9869. The Horton model is more suitable for describing the relationship between f(t) and t under the tested soil conditions, as compared with the Kostiakov and Philip models. According to the results of soil water content at different depths from the HYDRUS simulations and field experiments, the developed soil water infiltration model had a good accuracy, as indicated by RMSEs of <0.05, R2 values of >0.95, and mean relative errors of <12%. Many studies have illustrated the great benefit of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) in civil engineering. However, in some cases, this geophysical survey method does not produce the desired results due to the electromagnetic characteristics of the subsoil. This study presents the results obtained in two locations near Linares (southern Spain), evaluating the detection of structures buried in conductive host materials (0.02 S/m in site 1 and 0.015 S/m in site 2) characterized by strong signal attenuation. Accounting for the study depth, which was 1.5 m, a 500 MHz shielded GPR antenna was used at both sites. At the first site, a controlled experiment was planned, and it consisted of burying three linear elements. An iron pipe, a PVC pipe, and a series of precast blocks were buried at a depth of 0.5 m in a subsoil composed of highly conductive clayey facies. To eliminate additional multiples caused by other superficial structures and increasing the high-frequency content, the predictive deconvolution flow was applied. In the 3D processing, the cover surfaces technique was used. Once the acquired GPR signals was analyzed and the optimal processing flow established, a second site in which different infrastructures in a conductive host medium formed by marly facies was explored. This research investigates the influence of the scale effect on the bearing capacity of fine-grained subsoil under undrained conditions. The analyses were conducted based on laboratory tests of silty clay. Uniformly compacted samples were subjected to an unconfined compression test. The research was performed on cylindrical specimens. Three different variants of the diameter D (38 mm, 70 mm, 100 mm) and the corresponding height H = 2D were analyzed. Based on the tests results, the unconfined compression strength qu was determined, and from this, the undrained shear strength cu was calculated. The obtained results showed a clear decrease in cu with increasing sample size. However, in the existing reference documents, there are no specific guidelines for calculations of bearing capacity with consideration of sample size effect on the soil shear strength. Therefore, this study utilized the laboratory soil test data to calculate the bearing capacity of undrained subsoil, taking into account the seismic impacts, with a particular focus on spread foundations. This paper presents the path of knowledge developed for assessing the structural safety of the Norman-age Pisan Tower, which is mostly incorporated into the Royal Palace in Palermo, Italy. Historical, geomatic, and mechanical investigations were conducted and the most relevant results are herein collected and presented. The research path was addressed to specific tasks: identification of the building, geometric surveys, recognition of the sequence of phases of building transformation, detection of the components of the load-bearing structure, structural diagnostic surveys, and investigation of the subsoil and foundations. The explicit vulnerabilities found were mostly confined to the Piazzi library floor, while implicit vulnerabilities were identified in the presence of false walls and in high loads and fillings on the vaults of the last levels. The results of the analyses allowed the individuation of the confidence factors to use in structural analysis models aimed at the assessment of the seismic safety of the building. In the municipality of Enna, 80 HVSR measurements were performed, and some of these were combined with MASW seismic measurements, which made it possible to constrain the data inversion and obtain significant shear wave velocity models. A reconstruction of the depth of the seismic bedrock was performed for the whole territory, showing different depths for the higher and lower areas, as evidenced also by the Vseq parameter map. The frequency peaks identified in the H/V curve were analyzed through a cluster analysis algorithm to evaluate similarities that allow these peaks to be divided according to their stratigraphic origin. A non-hierarchical analysis algorithm modified in such a way as to avoid any a priori choice that could influence the partition has been used. The cluster analysis made it possible to divide the frequency peaks into five groupings, each of which was then associated with a seismic discontinuity, according to the geological contacts expected in the subsoil. Finally, the inversion of the data made it possible to reconstruct the geometries of these geological contact surfaces and to reconstruct a 3D model of the subsoil, which agrees well with the surface geology of the area. The presence of salinity and sodicity in the root zone can limit root development and impact crop yield. Topsoil constraints are likely to have the greatest impact on crop growth early in the growing season, when plant roots are still shallow. Later in the growing season, subsoil constraints may have a greater impact as roots reach deeper into the soil. This study investigated whether different patterns of spatial variation in crop growth would be evident in remote sensing data captured from different stages of the growing season, with the aim of providing a means of indicating whether soil constraints in the topsoil and in the subsoil might be impacting crop growth. If a topsoil constraint is impacting growth, we might expect its effects to show through a negative correlation between the soil constraint and the early-season vegetation index. However, we would not expect to observe the impact of a subsoil constraint until later in the season (when roots have reached the constraint). To test the results from the analysis of remote sensing data, we used soil data from five fields from across Australia's northern grains-growing region. We used these data to assess soil constraint severity and correlations between the soil constraints and enhanced vegetation index (EVI). The results of the study were inconclusive, and it was difficult to identify a dominant soil constraint with a clear relationship to crop growth. The soil data were also insufficient to draw conclusions about the depths of any dominant soil constraints. Furthermore, there was a lot of subjectivity in the interpretations of the correlations between remote sensing and soil data. The study also investigated the consistency of the spatial variation in EVI over multiple years, but the results were still inconclusive. In conclusion, this study highlights the challenges of using remote sensing data to diagnose soil constraints in agricultural settings. While remote sensing can provide useful insights into crop growth, interpreting these data and drawing meaningful conclusions about soil constraints requires further research and development. In Campania (southern Italy), the widespread presence of anthropogenic cavities in the subsoil of the Neapolitan and Caserta provinces is well known. In these towns, the underground quarrying activities were performed for centuries to extract volcanic tuffs for buildings. The urban developments have sealed many signals of the presence of cavities and their real extent is almost unknown, thus representing a geological hazard and contributing to the subsoil instability of many places. This contribution will show the main cavity typologies recognized across an area north of Naples according to the geological characteristics of the subsoil. The main aim of the study is the cataloging of the cavities and the analysis of the city subsoil as their presence may easily trigger the collapse of the shallow or deeper soils. Moreover, the recognition and sustainable reuse of cavities contributes to enhancing the cultural and touristic promotion of a territory. In this study, a database framework was elaborated that includes all the possible architectural, geological and geotechnical elements of the cavities. This study was conducted to identify soil cadmium (Cd) removal pathways and their contribution rates during phytoremediation by Pennisetum hybridum, as well as to comprehensively assess its phytoremediation potential. Multilayered soil column tests and farmland-simulating lysimeter tests were conducted to investigate the Cd phytoextraction and migration patterns in topsoil and subsoil simultaneously. The aboveground annual yield of P. hybridum grown in the lysimeter was 206 ton·ha−1. The total amount of Cd extracted in P. hybridum shoots was 234 g·ha−1, which was similar to that of other typical Cd-hyperaccumulating plants such as Sedum alfredii. After the test, the topsoil Cd removal rate was 21.50–35.81%, whereas the extraction efficiency in P. hybridum shoots was only 4.17–8.53%. These findings indicate that extraction by plant shoots is not the most important contributor to the decrease of Cd in the topsoil. The proportion of Cd retained by the root cell wall was approximately 50% of the total Cd in the root. Based on column test results, P. hybridum treatment led to a significant decrease in soil pH and considerably enhanced Cd migration to subsoil and groundwater. P. hybridum decreases Cd in the topsoil through multiple pathways and provides a relatively ideal material for phytoremediation of Cd-contaminated acid soils. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous studies have found that C turnover is bound to hotspots of microbial activity. The objective of this study was to analyze the effects of pure energy substrate (glucose), nutrient (mineral N or P) and combined substrate and nutrient (glucose + N, glucose + P, sterile DOC, artificial root exudate extract) additions to enzyme activity inside and outside hotspots as a proxy for microbial C turnover in a subsoil. By means of different substrate and nutrient additions, we tested how the limitations of our site were distributed on a small scale and depth-dependently to contribute to an increase in knowledge of subsoil mechanistics. The study site is a sandy Dystric Cambisol under an over 100-year-old beech forest stand in Lower Saxony, Germany. Forty-eight undisturbed soil samples from two depth increments (15–27 cm and 80–92 cm) of three profiles were sprayed homogeneously with easily available C, N and P sources to investigate the impacts of substrates and nutrients on three enzyme activities (acid phosphatase, β-glucosidase and N-acetylglucosaminidase) by using the soil zymography approach. Comparisons of upper and lower subsoils showed significantly fewer and smaller hotspots in the lower subsoil but with a high degree of spatial variation in comparison to the upper subsoil. Different patterns of enzyme distribution between upper and lower subsoil suggest microbial communities with a lower diversity are found in deeper soil regions of the site. Both substrate and nutrient additions stimulated enzyme activities significantly more outside the initial hotspots than within. Because of this, we conclude that microorganisms in the initial hotspots are less limited than in the surrounding bulk soil. Changes in enzyme activities owing to both substrate and nutrient addition were stronger in the lower subsoil than in the upper subsoil, showing differences in limitations and possible changes in microbial community structure with increasing depth. The results of our study emphasize the need to consider spatial factors in microbial turnover processes, especially in lower subsoil regions where stronger substrate and nutrient limitations occur. A large part of Brazilian maize is double-cropped after soybeans, when water shortages are very frequent. A larger root system can mitigate drought stress and enable better nitrogen (N) use. Alleviating acidity and applying gypsum can increase root growth and N-use efficiency in maize, which has a more aggressive root system than soybeans. However, it is not known how these factors interact in integrated cropping systems, or how soybeans respond to them. Soybean and maize root growth and grain yields as affected by soil Ca enrichment using lime and gypsum, along with the N rates applied to maize intercropped with Guinea grass (Megathyrsus maximus), were assessed in a medium-term field experiment. Liming resulted in greater root growth for both crops; however, when lime was used in conjunction with gypsum, root growth was further enhanced. The total maize grain yield was 35% higher compare to the control when gypsum was used in conjunction with lime; however, subsoil Ca enrichment increased the total soybean grain yield by 8% compared to the control. Nitrogen fertilization increased the total maize grain yield by 36%, with a more expressive increase when applying 160 kg ha−1 or more, and despite a positive effect on soybean grain yields in the long term, this response seems not to be a direct effect of the N applied to the maize. This study explored reinforced concrete piles located in a flexible half-space and loaded with external loads, considering various contact elements and the connection between the pile and the ground massif. Piles are mainly solved as axially loaded elements stressed by a vertical force. However, there are also several cases in the construction industry where a pile is stressed by a horizontal force or by a bending moment, producing a bending loaded pile. A static model of a pile and the surrounding subsoil was constructed using software based on FEM. The pile was modelled from 3D finite elements that were rotationally symmetric around the vertical axis of the pile. Additionally, the flexible half-space was modelled from 3D elements that were rotationally symmetrical around the piles. The boundary conditions were applied on the surfaces around the perimeter and at the bottom of the ground massif. The flexible half-space was modelled up to the area where there was zero deformation. The presented analysis focused on the description of different types of contact elements between the surface of the reinforced concrete pile and the surrounding ground mass. This interaction was modelled as a fixed connection or as point-to-point contact, and a contact surface. In the next part, different boundary conditions on the pile bottom were considered. Floating piles, supported by joints or firmly woven into the ground massif, were considered. All these outputs based on FEM were compared with the analytical solution of the bent pile that was published in the 1980s. The deformations and internal forces during different modelling of the contact between the edge of the concrete pile and the surrounding ground mass were compared. The higher values of the studied quantities were for rigid connections, which is logical. For contact elements, the property of the contact was considered. This property introduces less stiffness, and thus, the resulting values were lower compared to those for a fixed connection. The piled embankment represents one of the solutions for the realization of a soil body on a compressible subsoil where extended settlement or insufficient stability threatens the serviceability of related structures. Widely adopted analytical design procedures were analyzed: Marston's formula and Hewlett and Randolph method contained in the British standard BS 8006-1, the German regulation EBGEO and the Dutch regulation CUR 226. Using these recommendations, the theoretical values of the individual parts of the load acting in the embankment and, subsequently, the values of the axial strain or tensile forces in the reinforcement were determined and compared with experimental data obtained from the tests in the large-scale physical model. For the presented case, without subsoil support, CUR 226 with the inverse load, which is recommended in the case of subsoil with low bearing capacity, shows better coincidence with the measured data. Overall, EBGEO and CUR 226 can be considered to be close to the real behavior of the piled embankment. Because of the frequent utilization of geosynthetic reinforcement and possible changes of subsoil parameters during the service life of the piled embankment, a rheological process of its elements should be investigated during the design process. Stumps are a significant component of coarse woody debris in plantations, but their effect on microsite soil organic carbon (C) and enzyme activities remains understudied. Soil (Alfisol) samples were collected at varying distances from larch (Larix olgensis Henry) stumps and at different soil depths (0–20 cm and 20–40 cm) to analyze soil total organic C (TOC), particulate organic C (POC), easily oxidizable C (EOC), microbial biomass C (MBC), and enzyme activities. Results indicated that stumps significantly affected TOC and POC contents, with the greatest horizontal range of impact reaching up to 15 cm in both the topsoil and subsoil layers. Stumps also significantly affected MBC content, with the greatest horizontal range of impact reaching up to 55 cm in the subsoil layer. EOC content was the most affected, with the stumps' impact extending to 55 cm in both soil layers. Additionally, the study showed that stumps had a significant impact on the activities of β-glucosidase and β-cellobiohydrolase, with the greatest horizontal range of impact reaching up to 15 cm for glucosidase and 35 cm for cellobiohydrolase in the topsoil layer. Stumps also significantly affected the activities of phenol oxidase and peroxidase, with the maximum horizontal range of stump impact extending up to 35 cm for phenol oxidase and 55 cm for peroxidase in the topsoil layer. This study enhances our understanding of the role of stumps in plantation ecosystems and offers valuable insights for future management strategies to maintain soil fertility and improve site productivity. In order to explore the drag reduction mechanism of pneumatic subsoiling and study the influence of pneumatic subsoiling on the soil, this study used machine learning models to predict the working resistance of a pneumatic subsoiler and adopted random forest (RF), error back-propagation (BP), eXtreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) and support vector regression (SVR) to analyze and compare the predictions of these four models. Field experiments were carried out in two fields with different bulk densities and moisture content. The effects of these parameters on the resistance of pneumatic subsoiling were studied by changing the working air pressure, depth and forward speed. In the RF, SVR, XGBoost and BP models, five parameters (working air pressure, working depth, forward speed, bulk density and moisture content) were inputted as independent variables, and the operating resistance of pneumatic subsoiling was used as the predicted value. After training the four models, the results showed that the R2 value of the RF model was the highest and the error was the smallest, which made it better than the SVR, XGBoost and BP models. The values of MAPE, R2 and RMSE for the RF model's test set were 0.01, 0.99, and 3.61 N, respectively, indicating that the RF model could predict the resistance value of subsoiling well. When the RF model was used to analyze the five input parameters, the experimental results showed that the contribution of working air pressure to reducing the resistance of subsoiling reached 29%, indicating that pneumatic subsoiling can reduce the resistance, drag and consumption. San Salvador Metropolitan Area (MASS) is an urbanized territory in the country of El Salvador, located between the San Salvador volcano and the Ilopango caldera, in a sub-flat area called "Valle de las Hamacas" (Valley of the Hammocks). The high seismicity of this area is due to the subduction zone of the Cocos plate that causes strong seismic events such as the earthquakes that occurred on 13 January (7.6 Mw) and 13 February 2001 (6.6 Mw). As part of the international cooperation project between Italy (AICS) and El Salvador University, the CASTES project focussed on natural hazards in the territory of El Salvador was launched. Therefore, 2D simulations are carried out along two sections to evaluate the Local Seismic Response (LSR) in the Southeast part of MASS territory. Results show spatially variable amplifications (from 3 to 6.5) in the period ranging 0.1–0.7 s and evidence of lateral FA variations that can be calculated only through 2D numerical analyses. Two amplified periods are recognised, 0.1–0.5 s and 0.4–0.8 s, due to the presence of two types of subsoil volcanic deposits: the shallow and soft Tierra Blanca deposits and the deeper and stiffer Volcanic ash and Tuff. The principle of sustainable development imposes an obligation on societies to manage natural resources rationally and to care for the quality of the environment, by, among other things, reducing CO2 emissions. Alternative ways of stabilising building substrates by increasing their shear strength (cu) are increasingly being sought. This paper presents how microorganisms can influence cu and thus the load-bearing capacity of building substrates. Tests were performed in a triaxial compression apparatus in three variants. The first variant of testing was carried out on cemented soil samples, which were cemented in situ. The next two series of tests were performed on reconstructed samples, i.e., natural soil and soil inoculated with a solution of Sporosarcina pasteurii bacteria. The results obtained show that carbonate cementation increases the shear strength of the soil; in addition, this biomineralization-induced cementation gives higher cu results than natural carbonate cementation. Pedological maps in suitable scales are scarce in most countries due to the high costs involved in soil surveying. Therefore, methods for surveying and mapping must be developed to overpass the cartographic material obtention. In this sense, this work aims at assessing a digital soil map (DSM) built by multispectral data extrapolation from a source area to a target area using the ASTER time series modeling technique. For that process, eight representative toposequences were established in two contiguous micro-watersheds, with a total of 42 soil profiles for analyses and classification. We found Ferralsols, Plinthosols, Regosols, and a few Cambisols, Arenosols, Gleisols, and Histosols, typical of tropical regions. In the laboratory, surface soil samples were submitted to spectral readings from 0.40 µm to 2.50 µm. The soil spectra were morphologically interpreted, identifying shapes and main features typical of tropical soils. Soil texture grouped the curves by cluster analysis, forming a spectral library (SL). In parallel, an ASTER time series (2001, 2004, and 2006) was processed, generating a bare soil synthetic soil image (SySI) covering 39.7% of the target area. Multiple Endmember Spectral Mixture Analysis modeled the SL on the SySI generating DSM with 73% of Kappa index, in which identified about 77% is covered by rhodic Ferralsols. Besides the overestimation, the DSM represented the study area's pedodiversity. Given the discussion raised, we consider including subsoil data and other features using other sensors in operations modeled by machine learning algorithms to improve results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Crop growth is often uneven within an agricultural parcel, even if it has been managed evenly. Aerial images are often used to determine the presence of vegetation and its spatial variability in field parcels. However, the reasons for this uneven growth have been less studied, and they might be connected to variations in topography, as well as soil properties and quality. In this study, we evaluated the relationship between drone image data and field and soil quality indicators. In total, 27 multispectral and RGB drone image datasets were collected from four real farm fields in 2016–2020. We analyzed 13 basic soil quality indicators, including penetrometer resistance in top- and subsoil, soil texture (clay, silt, fine sand, and sand content), soil organic carbon (SOC) content, clay/SOC ratio, and soil quality assessment parameters (topsoil biological indicators, subsoil macroporosity, compacted layers in the soil profile, topsoil structure, and subsoil structure). Furthermore, a topography variable describing water flow was used as an indicator. Firstly, we evaluated single pixel-wise linear correlations between the drone datasets and soil/field-related parameters. Correlations varied between datasets and, in the best case, were 0.8. Next, we trained and tested multiparameter non-linear models (random forest algorithm) using all 14 soil-related parameters as features to explain the multispectral (NIR band) and RGB (green band) reflectance values of each drone dataset. The results showed that the soil/field indicators could effectively explain the spatial variability in the drone images in most cases (R2 > 0.5), especially for annual crops, and in the best case, the R2 value was 0.95. The most important field/soil features for explaining the variability in drone images varied between fields and imaging times. However, it was found that basic soil quality indicators and topography variables could explain the variability observed in the drone orthomosaics in certain conditions. Resonance frequencies of a masonry bell tower were estimated by means of ambient noise measurements and compared with those computed by using fixed base, Winkler, and FE numerical, including subsoil. Given the geological complexity that characterizes the subsurface of the analyzed area, despite the presence of massive volcanic outcrops near the bell tower, we carried out a geophysical characterization of the subsoil by using active and passive seismic surveys. These surveys have identified a soft substrate underneath the construction; for this reason, the dynamic identification of the tower was performed, including the interaction with the soil. The resonance frequencies of the masonry bell tower computed by the models are very similar to those obtained using ambient noise. Results suggest that building resonance frequencies, estimated by ambient noise surveys, can be used because of their reliability especially when quick analyses are required at historical buildings located in seismically active areas needing plan actions to reduce their vulnerability. Moreover, such analyses, being performed on samplings acquired within the structure, allow for estimating its dynamic response, taking into account the effect of subsurface characteristics as well. When designing reinforced slender columns for the lowest story of buildings, all factors that may affect the load-bearing capacity should be considered. One is the increase in the bending moment value caused by the rotation of the supporting foundation. The geotechnical parameters of subsoil stiffness and the method of calculating foundation displacements are the main influences. This problem applies to both shallow foundations and pile foundations. The article presents this issue in relation to pile foundations in multilayered subsoils and also the method and examples of second-order calculations that take into account the influence of pile support and columns' nominal stiffness. The results showed that taking into account the stiffness of the pile foundation has an impact on the increase in bending moments in the columns, and this cannot be ignored in the design. Soil is the habitat for soil organisms and associated soil physical and chemical processes. The subsoil is a large reserve of water and nutrients. Soil and subsoil are thus significantly involved in the yield capacity of a site and its resilience in the case of unfavorable weather conditions. Subsoil can also retain water in drought phases and stores carbon. In times of climate change and scarcity of resources, many scientific activities involve subsoil and require sensors to assess subsoil conditions and properties. An electrically driven penetrometer with an integrated soil water content sensor could be an appropriate tool for such applications; however, such a subsoil measurement tool does not exist. One major reason for this is that, when penetrating compacted subsoil, high penetration forces (including friction) act on the penetrating thin rod (diameter 1 cm). The development of a tractor-mounted subsoil penetrometer for depths up to 2 m is described in this study. An ASABE standard cone is implemented, which can access heavy compacted layers. The rod, which includes wires for embedding an FDI moisture sensor in the cone tip, is covered by a protection tube. The penetration resistance measurement can be performed without being influenced by shaft friction. The rod, along with the sensor, is implemented in a tower that can be shifted laterally and can take probes in a single line without moving the tractor. To confirm the quality of the developed subsoil penetrometer, a suitable evaluation method is presented. Typical arable soil (loamy silt) was filled in boxes and compacted homogeneously using a hydraulic stamp so that different setups of the penetrometer could be compared and evaluated. The evaluation concludes that the distance between the free cone tip and the protection shaft should be at least 10 cm to measure the penetration resistance of soil without being influenced by the protection tube. Furthermore, the developed penetrometer has sufficient stability and precision for accessing subsoil. For more than a decade now, geophysical prospecting has been considered an integral part of archaeological research; the ability to quickly investigate large areas and locate objects buried in the ground without directly interacting with it is a key feature that makes such surveys essential for identifying and locating, with good accuracy, buried archaeological remains. In this study, two extensive magnetic and electromagnetic surveys were carried out in two different areas of the Akrai archaeological site, where given the distribution of archaeological remains already found at the site, it was likely that additional buried remains were present. The surveys were performed using a proton precession magnetometer and a multifrequency electromagnetic device with a frequency range of 2.5–250 kHz. By processing the data, the vertical magnetic gradient and electrical conductivity maps were obtained. Furthermore, 3D models of electrical conductivity distribution were reconstructed. On comparing the results, it was notable that many anomalies characterized by low vertical gradient values were identified within areas characterized by low electrical conductivity values. These anomalies detected by both surveys can be associated with good probability with buried archaeological remains made up of limestones. Several strategies have been proposed recently to reduce the accumulated harmful circumstances of intensive conventional farming practices. The adoption of conservation soil tillage and organic fertilization techniques could contribute to achieving this goal. The study was conducted over a three-year trial to assess the effects of soil tillage practices (plough; subsoil; spading) and fertilization management (inorganic vs. organic) on durum wheat growth dynamics and productivity in a Mediterranean environment. The chlorophyll concentration (CC) was evaluated using an MC-100 chlorophyll meter, and Green Area (GA) was extracted from red-green-blue (RGB) digital images acquired with a commercially available digital camera. These non-destructive low-cost methods were used to examine crop status and its reactions to climate conditions over three consecutive growing seasons in the field. A positive strong linear relationship between both CC and GA against grain yield in each growing season was identified. The study highlights that CC and GA methods are valuable tools to assess crop development under Mediterranean conditions. The results indicated that the applied conservation tillage systems, such as subsoil tillage and using the spading machine, along with organic fertilization with compost, are valuable choices in the Mediterranean basin for sustainable and higher crop production (13%) compared to the conventional traditional system. Geophysical surveys are widely used to reconstruct subsoil seismo-stratigraphic structures with a non-invasive approach. In this study the geophysical surveys were carried out with the aim to characterise the San Giorgio Cathedral in Ragusa (Italy) and the area on which it is built from a dynamic point of view. A 3D subsoil model was realised through the integration of two active (i.e., seismic tomography and multichannel analysis of surface waves) and one passive seismic technique (horizontal to vertical spatial ratio). The instrumentation used for the latter method consists of a tromograph (Tromino®), which is also employed for the characterisation of the building, focusing on the façade and the dome, by means of an ambient vibration test, processed through the standard spectral ratio and frequency domain decomposition methods. Integration of the 3D model, showing the distribution of areas with different physicomechanical characteristics, enables identifying anomalies that are likely attributable to the remains of the ancient Byzantine church of San Nicola. Four lower modes mainly involving the two investigated macroelements are identified. The experimental results outline the advantages of the use of the tromograph both for soil and structural characterisation, especially for massive masonry buildings located in areas with high seismic hazard. Planting a deep-rooted green manure (GM) (more than 1.0 m depth) greatly improves soil fertility and reduces the loss of nutrients. However, few studies have examined the response of soil nitrogen (N) distribution in the soil profile and subsoil N recovery to the long-term planting and incorporation of deep-rooted GM. Based on a 12-year (2009–2021) experiment of spring maize-winter GMs rotation in the North China Plain (NCP), this study investigated the effects of different GMs that were planted over the winter, including ryegrass (RrG, Lolium L.) (>1.0 m), Orychophragmus violaceus (OrV, Orychophragmus violaceus L.) (>0.8 m), and hairy vetch (VvR, Vicia villosa Roth.) (>1.0 m), on the spring maize yield, N distribution in the deep soil profile, N use efficiencies, functional gene abundances involving soil nitrification–denitrification processes and N2O production. Compared with the winter fallow, the maize yield significantly increased by 11.6% after 10 years of green manuring, and water storage in 0–200 cm soil profile significantly increased by 5.0–17.1% at maize seedling stage. The total N content in the soil layer at 0–90 cm increased by 15.8–19.7%, while the nitrate content in the deep soil layer (80–120 cm) decreased by 17.8–39.6%. Planting GM significantly increased the N recovery rate (10.4–32.7%) and fertilizer N partial productivity (4.6–13.3%). Additionally, the topsoil N functional genes (ammonia-oxidizing archaea amoA, ammonia-oxidizing bacterial amoA, nirS, nirK) significantly decreased without increasing N2O production potential. These results indicated that long-term planting of the deep-rooted GM effectively reduce the accumulation of nitrates in the deep soil and improve the crop yield and N use efficiencies, demonstrating a great value in green manuring to improve the fertility of the soil, increase the crop yield, and reduce the risk of N loss in NCP. Mung bean residues stimulate the hatching of soybean cyst nematode (SCN). In our previous study, combined incorporation of mung bean residues and biochar into soil can be effective in suppression of the soybean cyst nematode (SCN), Heterodera glycines, in the upper layer soil. However, there are no data available as to whether such effects are transmissible, and could for example be manifest in subsoil zones where such incorporation is confined to topsoils, via water-based pathways. We evaluated the effects of leachate passage from a biochar-amended soil in an upper soil zone to a lower zone in a microcosm-based system, upon a range of physicochemical properties and density of SCN. Disturbed soil was filled in a total of 9 cylindrical cores with two layers. The upper layer (0–15 cm) was amended with biochar at rates equivalent to 0, 0.3% or 1.8%, with bulk density set at of 1.1 g cm−3. The lower layer (15–25 cm) without biochar amendment was compacted to 1.2 g cm−3. Mung beans were grown for two weeks and incorporated into the upper layer. Water was surface-applied to the cores 4, 6, and 8 weeks after mung bean incorporation. After 16 weeks, the upper and lower layer soils were separately collected and assayed. The presence of biochar in the upper layer reduced the abundance of free-living nematodes, mainly bacterivorous, but increased that of a predator genus Ecumenicus in this zone. In the lower layer of soil under a biochar-amended upper layer, available P and soluble cations were increased as were abundances of total nematodes including Ecumenicus, resulting in greater maturity index, basal and structure indices. Notably, SCN density was decreased in lower zones by more than 90% compared to zero-biochar controls. In engineering practice, due to the high compressibility and very low shear strength of organic soils, it is difficult to construct an embankment on organic subsoil. High variability and significant change in geotechnical parameters cause difficulties in predicting the behavior of organic soils under embankment loading. The aim of the paper was to develop empirical relationships used in the preliminary design for evaluating the settlement and undrained shear strength of organic subsoil loaded by embankment based on data obtained from four test sites. Statistical multiple regression models were developed for evaluating the settlement in time and undrained shear strength in time individually for peat and gyttja. Neural networks to predict the settlement and undrained shear strength in time for peat and gyttja simultaneously as double-layer subsoils as well as a separate neural network for peat and a separate neural network for gyttja as single-layer subsoils were also developed. The vertical stress, thickness, water content, initial undrained shear strength of peat and gyttja, and time were used as the independent variables. Artificial neural networks are characterized by greater prediction accuracy than statistical multiple regression models. Multiple regression models predict dependent variables with maximum relative errors of about 35% to about 60%, and neural networks predict output variables with maximum relative errors of about 25% to about 30%. The ocean is extremely rich in mineral resources. To cope with the shortage of land mineral resources, countries are focusing on the development of deep-sea mineral mining technology. Owing to its superior traction performance, the deep-sea polymetallic nodule collector (DPNC) has become the preferred solution for ocean mining. This paper proposes a dynamic traction calculation model to address the shortcomings in the classical static traction calculation model with consideration of the dynamic variation rule of grouser–soil interaction in the DPNC process. Lab tests were conducted to formulate materials similar to deep-sea soil, and the corresponding shear stress–displacement models were established using the discrete element method (DEM) and Magic Formula to describe the "shear stress–displacement" relationship more accurately. Considering Kunlong 500, which is a Chinese DPNC, as an example, the periodicity and dynamics of the dynamic traction force were analyzed and compared with the numerical simulation results. The dynamic traction force was smaller than the static traction force and fluctuated significantly when considering the dynamic grousers–soil interaction. The magnitude and fluctuation of the dynamic traction force were influenced by the ratio of the grouser height to the spacing. In the DPNC design, the ratio of the grouser height to the spacing should be optimized according to the properties of the deep-sea subsoil to improve the traction performance and stability of the DPNC. The O'Higgins Region, located in Central Chile, concentrates 40% of the country's maize production, mainly under conventional tillage. This has generated soil physical degradation, modifying water movement on it, which varies even in short distances. In this study, we wanted to evaluate the spatial variability of different physical and hydraulic properties in relation to the agricultural use of Inceptisol. The study was conducted on a farm in Central Chile, in a fallow–maize rotation under conventional tillage. Penetration resistance (PR) was measured by using systematic sampling, defining areas of high and low PR, where soil samples were collected in places with frequent crossing of machinery (+M) and places without crossing (−M) and on topsoil and subsoil, establishing four treatments: +M—topsoil, +M—subsoil, −M—topsoil, and −M—subsoil. Organic matter (OM), texture, bulk density (BD), hydraulic conductivity (K), and hydrophobicity (R) were measured. The soil order was Inceptisol with a sandy-loam texture. The PR ranged from 200,000 to 2,000,000 Pa on topsoil and 600,000 to 2,400,000 Pa in subsoil, and the OM content was higher with a low PR. The K varied from 0.6 to 18 cm h−1, being greater in depth, as tillage disturbs the topsoil stabilized during the season. A linear relationship was found between the K and R, explaining differences between high- and low-PR sites. There was an association between Ksat with position (subsoil/topsoil) and PR (high/low) that may allow us to use the PR as a proxy for K. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For the effect of two-sided sudden surcharge/unloading on existing shield tunnels, an indoor dimensional reduction model test was conducted at a scale of 1:15.5, measuring the ground settlement, lateral convergence of the shield tunnel, and additional surrounding pressure after changing the location and soil quality of surcharge/unloading, and an analysis was carried out. The results showed that the location of the maximum transverse convergence value of the existing shield tunnel is related to the position of the surcharge; when surcharging on both sides of the tunnel, as the position of the left surcharge's offset increases from 0.2 m to 0.6 m, the transverse convergence value of the tunnel first increases and then becomes smaller; the ground settlement value of each measurement point in the unloading process also increases and then becomes smaller. The settlement value of each measurement point first increases and then decreases, and the alleviation effect of unloading on ground settlement is not obvious; after surcharge on one side of the tunnel, if the other side continues to surcharge, it will lead to a continued increase in the surrounding pressure. Unloading can effectively reduce the additional surrounding pressure of the tunnel, but the additional surrounding pressure cannot be immediately and completely eliminated; compared with dry sand, the maximum value of lateral convergence of the tunnel in wet sand is significantly decreased, and the peak value of ground settlement on both sides is not significant; when both sides are surcharged to 172 kg, the additional soil pressure of the tunnel's subsoil shows three peaks, one of which occurs at measurement point 4 at the bottom of the tunnel, which may be due to the occurrence of stress concentration at the location. Subsoil (0.2–1 m) organic carbon (C) accounts for the majority of soil organic carbon (SOC), and SOC turnover time (τ, year) is an important index of soil C stability and sequestration capacity. However, the estimation of subsoil τ and the identification of its dominant environmental factors at a regional scale is lacking in regards to forest ecosystems. Therefore, we compiled a dataset with 630 observations to investigate subsoil τ and its influencing factors in forest ecosystems across China using the structural equation model (SEM). The results showed a large variability of subsoil τ from 2.3 to 896.2 years, with a mean (± standard deviation) subsoil τ of 72.4 ± 68.6 years; however, the results of one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that subsoil τ differed significantly with forest types (p = 0.01), with the slowest subsoil τ obtained in deciduous-broadleaf forests (82.9 ± 68.7 years), followed by evergreen-needleleaf forests (77.6 ± 60.8 years), deciduous-needleleaf forests (75.3 ± 78.6 years), and needleleaf and broadleaf mixed forests (71.3 ± 80.9 years), while the fastest subsoil τ appeared in evergreen-broadleaf forests (59.9 ± 40.7 years). Subsoil τ negatively correlated with the mean annul temperature, occurring about three years faster with a one degree increase in temperature, indicating a faster subsoil SOC turnover under a warming climate. Subsoil τ significantly and positively correlated with microbial activities (indicated by microbial C and nitrogen), highlighting the importance of microbial communities in regulating subsoil C dynamics. Climate, forest types, forest origins, vegetation, and soil variables explained 37% of the variations in subsoil τ, as indicated by the SEM, and the soil property was the most important factor affecting subsoil τ. This finding challenged previous perception that climate was the most important factor driving subsoil C dynamics, and that dominant drivers varied according to climate zones. Therefore, recognizing different dominant factors in predicting subsoil C dynamics across climate zones would improve our understanding and reduce the uncertainties regarding subsoil C dynamics in biogeochemical models under ongoing climate change. Although the phosphatase enzymes regulate phosphorus (P) turnover throughout the soil profile, at present, they are rarely studied and are less well understood in the deeper soil layers than in the surface horizons. Hence the changes in P-associated soil properties were assessed throughout five Phaeozem profiles for different agricultural land uses including alfalfa, winter wheat, grapevine, apple trees and hops. The acid phosphatase (AcP), alkaline phosphatase (AlP) and phosphodiesterase (PDE) activity was assayed, as were the microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and phosphorus (MBP) contents and also other properties (e.g., available phosphorus, total organic carbon, total nitrogen). We have also determined the mass, length and surface area of the plant roots. In general, the activities of the studied enzymes were highest in the topsoil in four out of the five profiles studied, which corresponded to the highest level of root mass. The older the plant, the greater the root mass and increased enzymatic activity in the deeper horizons of apple trees and hop profiles in comparison to the surface layers. The greatest enzymatic activity, MBC and MBP contents were found in the horizons with a TOC content >0.5% and decreased down the soil profiles similarly to the changes in TOC and TN contents. While the studied properties were determined to varying degrees by means of the organic C content and availability in all of the genetic horizons, the influence of the prevailing conditions and the factors related to soil depth and pedogenic processes were less pronounced. The clay content was related to a significant extent to all of the studied enzyme activities, but only in horizons with a TOC content <0.5%. Significantly higher phosphatase activity under aerobic as opposed to anaerobic conditions were determined in this study, while the opposite trend was found for the content of MBC and MBP as well as the ratio of MBC/MBP. Overall, we pointed out the complex effect of the soil depth, soil forming-processes and cultivated plants on soil P-associated enzyme activities and other properties throughout the soil profiles. This knowledge will allow better understanding of the state of enzymes and their contribution to the biogeochemical cycle of soil P, especially in subsoils, where the enzyme activities follow different patterns than those in the surface horizons.
